THE Rotary club of Atherton has been donated an important piece of Tableland history in the form of a WWII map of the Kairi/Tinaroo region. The map was kindly donated
by Jill, Phillip and David Martin, whose family has held the map since the battalion stationed there was deployed during the war. The Martin family decided to
donate the map to Atherton Rotary due to their important role in the restoration of the Rocky Creed Igloo where the map was handed over on Friday. Mapee camp was the name
of the camp where the solders stayed in the Kairi/Tinaroo region. A lot of the area today has been taken over by Tinaroo Dam and is now underwater. Brian McLaren from Ather-
ton Rotary was on hand to receive the map along with John Hardy of the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park Advisory Committee.

THE new endoscopy service at the Mareeba hospital has seen its first patient last week and is set to see many more through its doors. The new endoscopy service

Mrs Hore believes that the locality of the new service will provide much better use to the local residents and save them the costly trip down the range. “I think it’s awesome that we now have this kind of service in Mareeba,” she said. “People now don’t have to go all the way to Cairns and stay over a weekend. “I would love to see similar or more endoscopy services provided in the future.” Mrs Hore would also like to thank the incredible staff at the Mareeba hospital including Dr Toby Hopton and Director of Medicine at Cairns Base Hospital Dr Peter Boyd. Mareeba Hospital’s Dr Toby Hopton said he was ecstatic to see the service now offered in Mareeba. “We spent a lot of time referring patients to Cairns and Atherton for this service, and for many of them they don’t have the means to travel those distances, so purely from a convenience standpoint it is really beneficial,” he said. “In addition to that, it is fantastic to see services this important being offered in regions – healthcare is integral and hopefully we can see other services make their way to the Mareeba Hospital.”

Motion for amendment to transport strategy denied DIVISION 6 Tablelands Regional Council councillor Owen Byrnes requested an amendment to an item on the council meeting’s agenda last Friday. Item 14 on the agenda was surrounding the Tablelands Regional Council Transport Strategy, where Cr Byrnes moved a motion to make an amendment. Cr Byrnes said he wanted to see council endorse the Tablelands Regional Council Transport Strategy, while recognising council’s obligation to provide
all rateable properties with a minimum standard of road access that is at the least sufficient for conventional emergency services vehicle access. “I am concerned that while in principle this strategy proposal is a reasonable tool for evaluating roads, some properties will have little or no service,” he said. “Council officers are currently voicing a policy that roads will not be maintained past the second last property on council
roads. “All property owners should be treated equally and the people living at the end of the road are paying rates similar to their neighbours. “Not providing good access limits the commercial viability and may devalue the real estate potential.” Cr Byrnes said he believes council has a moral and ethical obligation to construct and maintain all roads that service rateable properties with council
approved dwellings. “The reason for that is if a fire or emergency occurs, conventional vehicles are usually deployed and if a fatal tragedy occurs because council opted to save money and reduce the level of service, then in my opinion that is an irresponsible decision,” he said. After rigorous debate the motion was denied as five councillors voted against it and only two voting in favour of the amendment.
First electronic land transfers for Mareeba MAREEBA legal firm, Apels Solicitors and Notary, have processed the first electronic land dealings in Mareeba. Until recently, land dealings were only to be handled in the same way they had been managed for almost 150 years – with the physical hand over of paper documents in exchange for bank cheques. Electronic property transfers through the PEXA (Property Exchange Australia) platform have been used in southern states for several years, but Queensland

has been cautious in its adoption of the platform. Principal of the firm, Peter Apel said that a solicitors’ first concern is always to ensure the security and certainty of the dealing for their client. We wanted to be sure the electronic processes were completely secure before adopting them, and have been watching the refinement of the system in NSW and Victoria. We are satisfied the system is every bit as reliable and secure as the paper based systems that
have worked so well to date. The electronic transfer process has comprehensive security procedures to guard against any risk of fraud, and has the great advantage to buyers of same day registration of their transfer (a process which previously could take days or weeks) and for sellers, sale proceeds can be deposited in the seller’s account as cleared funds immediately. Many types of land dealings are still presently unable to be processed through the electron-
ic platform in Queensland, so Apels Solicitors have retained full capacity to process transactions using the familiar paper based or the new electronic system – it is always the customer’s choice which system they would prefer to use. Mr Apel said the adoption of the new electronic transfer process by Queensland solicitors and Banks is rapidly increasing, and is expected to soon become the norm for property dealings.

Taking the dairy fight to Canberra TABLELANDS Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella joined Liberal National Party Senator Susan McDonald on a visit to Canberra this week to highlight to the nation’s leading politicians the myriad of issues facing the dairy industry if farmers aren’t afforded more financial incentives for the milk they produce. It was a visit that garnered plenty of attention from national media, and their desperate pleas to the powers that be have reverberated around the country. “I’ve been talking to dairy farmers and processors right across the state – this is a very serious issue and it has only been since Coles introduced a dollar a litre milk on Australia Day in 2011 that this really started,” she said. “Dairy farmers are being paid less than the cost of production, and that’s why I’m calling on the Regional and Rural Affairs and Transport Committee to hold a hearing to have Coles and Woolworths and the processors come to Canberra. “Because if they won’t explain to their dairy farmers why they won’t pay them a fair price, then they should explain it to the Australian public.” Senator McDonald said what the farmers are being paid now is unacceptable. “There are well-documented cost of production audits happening,” she said. “Coles and Woolworths and ALDI would be well aware of those documents – they know what the cost of production and need to be assuring themselves that they are sourcing milk in an ethical way and above the cost
of production. "This is not okay in Australia, and it’s especially not okay when they know dairy farmers are on their knees being starved every day.” “I know that Australians want to pay more for their milk in the knowledge that it is going to dairy farmers, and the reason I know that is true is because the sales of branded milk, branded cheese and farmer-processor owned products are going up.” Senator McDonald said she has made submissions to the Dairy Code of Conduct. “A few things that are in there that are extremely important include the removal of exclusive contracts, no unilateral step down on prices and other technical issues which need to be addressed.” Senator McDonald said The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission told her that a dairy floor price may not be able to be legislated under the constitution and would have taken as long as 18 months to implement. “To put it simply, our dairy farmers don’t have that long, so that’s why we have to pressure the big supermarkets and processors to charge consumers more for milk and pass these increases on to farmers,” she said. “That is the quickest and most effective way to solve the issue.” Submissions have now closed on the Government’s Dairy Code of Conduct, and we will now assess the best framework to ensure farmers are dealt with fairly. For more information on the Code, go to www. haveyoursay.agriculture.gov.au/

Cr Graham committed to community engagement
WITH the Local Government Elections in March of next year, council hopefuls are starting to put their name forward as voting rapidly approaches. One such person who is hoping to be re-elected is Cr Mary Graham, a well-respected Mareeba businesswoman who has been a councillor with MSC for the past six years. Cr Graham has officially announced that she will once again be nominating for the role of councillor, and it’s a position she has cherished since beginning in 2014. “I have had the privilege of
being a councilor since de-amalgamation, and during this time along with my fellow councilors we have kept the focus on financial stability while still managing and completing major infrastructure upgrades,” she said. “These projects include the new sewerage treatment plant, the completion of the $23 million upgrade to the Mareeba Airport, the current upgrade of the Mareeba Industrial Park and the major upgrade of Therwine Street in Kuranda, just to name a few.” It’s not just Cr Graham’s role in helping deliver key projects
to the region that has enabled her to establish such a respected reputation within the community, as her commitment to a number of not-for-profit organisations has been extensive. “During my time as councilor I have been involved with various committees throughout the shire such as Relay for Life, The Multicultural Festival, CIOM, Mareeba Heritage Centre Committee, Flexichoice, Save the Mareeba Hospital Group and Tableland Futures Cooperation,” she said. The foundations the current groups of councilors have built over the last six years are to be admired, and Cr Graham credits those tough early years as the reason behind their success. “When first being elected as councillor, we had some really hard decisions right at the very start when we de-amalgamated, and I think as a result of that it’s why we’re on such a sound financial footing now,” she said. “We were required to make some brave decisions but they’re ones we look back on with pride as they needed to be made. “And if given the privilege to once again to serve this wonderful shire I will continue to keep the focus on financial stability as well as maintaining the infrastructure and services that are required to service our community. “Also, I will continue to look for opportunities to further grow the shire so that the job opportunities are there for the next generation.”
John Brisbin looks to grow the shire AS Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore and Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen have announced that they will be stepping down at the next Local Government Elections, it has opened up some positions on council, and there are a number of worthy candidates who are putting their hand up to serve the community. One such person who has announced that he will be running for the role of councillor is John Brisbin, a Mount Molloy resident whose advocacy for the town has earned him great respect within the community. A native of the USA, Mr Brisbin has worked and travelled widely. He’s chucked prawns on a trawler in the Gulf of Mexico, employed a dozen craftsmen in a hotmetal letterpress shop and developed interactive digital media while living in a rural Japanese fishing village. After half a lifetime of moving around, John Brisbin arrived in Australia in 1995 and immediately felt a sense of coming home. “Everyone needs the chance to feel at home, and
for me, Australia is home,” he said. Since settling with his young family in Mount Molloy 7 years ago, he has been an active contributor to local groups. At the urging of local residents and Mareeba leaders, Mr Brisbin has put his hand up to stand for Council. “Mareeba Shire has a fascinating history, a powerful story of persistence and adaptation to change, and is poised to grow into a beautiful, sustainable future,” he said. “I can’t imagine a better way to serve my community than to represent them on local council.” Mr Brisbin said being involved in the community is something very close to his heart. “I’ve had a chance through the Northern Gulf and other groups to get across the shire and region so this is an opportunity to formalise that engagement and service the entire community,” he said. “I’ve lived in many places, and I feel I can bring a diver-
sity of view to the role. “What the current council have built has been impressive, however I still feel there’s opportunities that we can tap into as a council moving forward, and that requires being open to thinking outside the square which I feel I will do as a councillor.” Mr Brisbin said he would be making a concerted effort to advocate on behalf of the shire as a whole, ensuring that some of the smaller communities surrounding Mareeba don’t get left behind in the decision making process. “We’re seeing communities in the bush struggling right across the country, and given that this shire’s wealth is built on primary production, I believe the Mareeba Shire Council could further capitalise on the industries that drive our shire so all of us benefit from it,” he said. Cr Davies’ plan to build on council’s success THE Davies surname is synonymous with local politics, and current Mareeba Shire Councillor Kevin Davies has announced that he will be running for reelection at next year’s Local Government Elections. Kevin was first elected as a councillor in 2016; an achievement he said was a huge honour. “Being a councillor is a role I take very seriously,” he said. “I enjoy the challenges that the position brings with it, and it has been rewarding knowing that the shire is financially sustainable.” Kevin attributed his decision to stand for re-election to building on what has already been achieved in the last four years. “I will strive to continue to improve and maintain our
roads, sewerage and water network within the shire, and lobby State and Federal departments to improve infrastructure, water security and roads,” he said. “Given I’ve been in the industry for years, I particularly want to see key projects through like Oootan Road and Chillagoe Road.” “I also plan to help build council’s reserves for future developments, keep rate increases to a minimum, and maintain council’s current staffing levels to achieve expected service levels.” Being a councillor requires the ability to work as a team, and that’s something Kevin believes the current councillors’ willingness to work together is a big reason behind their success.
“We don’t always agree on everything, however we make sure that we hear each other out to guarantee we make the right decisions that benefits the whole shire,” he said. “We councillors have particularly learnt a lot under the leadership of Mayor Tom Gilmore and Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen, their experience and guidance was integral in the transition council had to make since de-amalgamation. “And that’s evident as we’ve recognised by the Queensland Treasury Corporation as a financially viable council.” Kevin said he will continue his proactive approach to the position of councillor if re-elected come March. “My aim as councillor is
simple, to get things done,” he said. “I use a very direct method and that’s something I believe I have brought to council and will continue to bring if elected. Cr Davies said his family’s experience in local politics has been something that has really helped his time serving on the council. “As many people know my father and grandfather were heavily involved with this council, and hearing of their experiences has helped me a lot in my time in the role,” he said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a councillor and I would love the opportunity to continue serving the community.”
Educator highlights social cohesion
BEING a councillor is a rigorous position that comes with plenty of responsibility, and one such person who believes he is the right man for the job is Mareeba resident Mario Mlikota. Mr Mlikota has been an educator for more than three decades, teaching throughout the state before taking on the role of Head of Department
in Social Sciences at Mareeba State High School in 1987, and prides himself on being a mentor and role model to generations of Far North Queenslanders. In addition to his involvement in educating the region’s youth, Mr Mlikota has been extensively involved with a number of local organisations in the community such as the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club, Mareeba Rugby League Club and Mareeba Golf Club. Mr Mlikota said his decision to nominate for the councillor position was one made so that he can continue to positively serve the community. “I can assure the voters that
I won’t make promises that I can’t deliver,” he said. “I am prepared to listen and act upon their concerns for a positive outcome which will benefit our community. “My passion for the shire and region as a whole is the driving force behind my intent to nominate for councillor. “In addition, I want to have a role in helping our shire move forward and to continue to be the best region to live, work and play in.” As a former educator, Mr Mlikota said if he were to be elected he would put a strong emphasis on improving community engagement in the region.
“I want to work for the whole shire,” he said. “Being involved with schools for as long as I did, I recognise the importance of keeping members of the community engaged and that’s what I’ll be looking to implement. “I’ll encourage and advocate for more community events that cater to people of all ages so we can improve on our region’s social cohesion. “As a community we already have great social cohesion, however there’s always room for improvement, and I’d love to be a part of applying that as a councillor.”

Mladen preparing to take the shire forward THE Tablelands is filled with individuals who have made a significant impact on their community, and one such person who definitely has done so is Mladen Bosnic, and he will have the chance to make an even greater impression as he has announced that he will be running for the position of councilor at the next Local Government Elections. Mr Bosnic’s involvement in the community is an extensive one, having been a board member of Soccer Far North and as Chair of the recently formed Far Northern Volunteer Area Committee of Crime Stoppers among
others. Mr Bosnic promises to bring a strong work ethic, and if his professional career is anything to go by, he’s sure to deliver. “I inherited my parents’ strong work ethic and upon completing school in 1972 I worked on their tobacco farm,” he said. “I later became a meat worker at the Mareeba meatworks and also enlisted in the army reserve 51st Battalion where I served for 7 years.” Mr Bosnic said he’ll bring a strong focus on the sustainability of agriculture in the region. “Having invested in the in-
dustry through my own rural property, I am aware of the challenges facing the industry such as access to market, fair gate price for produce, employment, water security for an expanding horticulture sector, transport and other infrastructure limitations,” he said. “I bring a wealth of vision, energy and results to whatever I apply myself to, which has driven me to seek election as a councillor. “It is a position from which I intend to influence change for the betterment of the shire and its communities.
“I am a genuine listener and powerful advocate for my constituents, and I believe I am the
right person to take the Mareeba Shire forward with prosperity and harmony.”

The members choice winner of the Tablelands and Surrounds Photography Group this week is... GARRY WATTERSON The theme was The Moon. So the story behind the image was a fishing trip to North Stradbroke Island which happened to coincide with a Super Moon and a particularly heavy surf, like 3 sets of breakers happening before hitting the beach. Consequently, the fishing was pretty much nonexistent which meant planning to capture the moon rising was on the cards. This image is one of many of the moon taken about 300mm off the sand on a fairly steep shoaling beach, hence being able
to fit so much of the water between the first set of breakers and the beach into the frame and still manage to have the moon rising through the spray. It was late afternoon in May so light was still reasonable and the dark blue of the sky accentuated the orange of the moon. I did manage to get wet to the waist though because I was sitting on the sand intently concentrating on the moon rise and not paying enough attention to the size of the incoming waves. Camera and gear okay, professional pride a bit dented.

Tablelands residents will now be able to have endoscopies and colonoscopies at Mareeba Hospital.
Endoscopy Service Now Open
Thank you to the community for your patience while we upgraded the Mareeba Hospital Operating Theatre to accommodate this new service. The new service welcomed our first patients on Tuesday 26 November. What is an endoscopy? Endoscopies allow doctors to see the lining of a patient’s oesophagus, stomach, or colon. If abnormal areas are seen, biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken for testing. Doctors can then diagnose gastrointestinal tract diseases such as cancers and abnormalities of the digestive tract. Do I need an endoscopy? If you are feeling unwell please see a GP for advice. Patients will be referred to the service through their GP or via our emergency department.

Bensted to bridge the gap” FATHER of two and Mareeba business owner, Locky Bensted, recently announced that he is running for councillor in the upcoming Local Government Election for Mareeba Shire. The 34-year-old attended Mareeba State High School and during his final year of High School, won the Youth Parliament competition for the old State Government seat of Tablelands. 2003 then saw Locky win the ABC Radio Heywire Competition which took him to the Federal Parliament in Canberra. Both experiences allowed him to gather some insight in both the State and Federal political environment. Locky is an engaged community member who has numerous passions that allow him to connect with community members in town and rurally, this includes work as a Rodeo announcer at most of the local rodeo and campdraft events around FNQ. Locky also lends his vocal cords to local charity events with his auctioneering skills. Locky has spent a lot of time in the outer regions of the shire which has allowed him to connect with residents and their needs. “The Mareeba Shire Council is in a sound position following de-amalgamation and it’s thanks to the current leadership
team. As a long-term resident and small business owner, I thank the Mareeba Shire Council councillors and staff for the opportunities they have created and wish those who are not seeking re-election a happy retirement,” he said. It’s these vacancies that prompted Locky to put his name forward as a candidate to help continue the positive outcomes whilst realising that moving forward the council needs some representatives from the next generation. “The ship that is Mareeba Shire is already sailing on a steady course and it’s important that we keep the wind in the sails for the next term and beyond,” he said. I want to become part of a productive Council not a reactive one and believe that a simple but fresh, enthusiastic and innovative approach to this next council would allow this Shire to continue to prosper. Locky said politics has always been a passion, and he feels he can make a difference if elected. “With Alan and Tom stepping down, there was an opportunity for the next generation to come through which was of interest to me,” he said. “I’m not interested in rein-
venting the wheel; however I feel my fresh and enthusiastic approach can help bridge the gap between the younger residents of the shire and council.” An initiative Locky will be advocating for throughout his campaign is “community catchup”, an afterhours program where councillors will visit the various regions of the shire to hear firsthand the concerns facing its residents. “While the core structure of council is fantastic, but there’s still that connection between young families and council missing, so what I’m hoping to bring is an open channel of communication as that can only benefit the Mareeba Shire,” he said. “Something else I’m passionate about is the agricultural sector, and our inability to get road trains in and out when we need to is something I will be heavily looking to rectify. “So ensuring we can get the most out of our primary producers will be something I strongly advocate for.” Locky said he would like to thank MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore and Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen for their integral work on council and he noted that if elected, he hopes to carry on the reputable legacy they will leave behind come March.
Fire bans in place TOTAL fire bans have been issued for four Local Government Areas. These include Mareeba Shire Council, Tablelands Regional Council, Etheridge Shire Council and Croydon Shire Council. The bans were issued on November 29 and will remain in place until December 13, 2019. The ban prohibits the lighting, maintenance and use of fire in the open spaces and all permits to Light Fire previously issued in the local fire ban area are cancelled (subject to exemptions). Ladies shopping night success LADIES love to shop and shop they did on Friday, November 22, as the Atherton Main Street businesses joined in the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) ‘Shop Tablelands this Christmas’ initiative and opened their doors for a ladies late night shopping event. The ladies left their husbands and kids at home for a night of Christmas shopping plus enjoying a meal and a drink out with friends.
“Everyone is so busy this time of year, so it was great to catch up with friends and do a spot of shopping – i scored some great bargains,” said Melissa Wilson, a shop local supporter. Local retailers also enjoyed the night. “We had so much fun working the night, with people popping in for a Taste of Love Lee and enjoying the music provided by Jerry and Rhonda Micola in our cafe.”

have it cleaned. The point this council ignores is that in the tourist season many grey nomads who travel with their dogs use these facilities. What must they think of the region wnen seeing this type of thing. The council was more interested in making this outdoor space into a smoke free area. When questioned about this there answer was we had complaints about cigarette butts but would not disclose how many complaints as this would be a breach of privacy. I am not a smoker, I just don't want anyones rights being taken away by a small minority. It is blatantly obvious this council show no pride in their region as this is only the tip of the iceberg of basic work not being completed. Granville Spencer ATHERTON

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR TRC land gift to Tablelands Investment Ltd THE sale of 1000m2 to TI Ltd is nothing short of a backroom deal. This block was offered for tender a few years ago and we are led to believe that only one bid was tendered - that being by TI (rumoured). In fact just prior to this land was put to tender, TI were well into negotiations with an adjacent owner where the price was $2.5 million for 2,000 m2. Of course that sale stalled as a result of this block conveniently becoming available. The tender result was predictable as there was no legal access to the subject land and it could only serve as an extension to the Silo complex - to the exclusion of all other privately owned parcels of land. We learn that the deal has already been done and now just has to be noted. So where is the transparency? The sale price is $100,000 plus some sort of contribution to a short road to Vernon St. What is the value of this contribution? How can this road be of benefit to anyone else but TI ? Will the Council be offering a similar deal to the other shopping centre or any other business? Why wasn't this land offered to the wider community so that it could have been sold to the highest bidder thus achieving
the highest possible return for the ratepayers? Quite frankly the parties in this deal should have kept it secret rather than insult the intelligence of the ratepayers by boasting the merits of the deal. So to the deal. Where is the community benefit as stated by Peter Anderson (TI)? How does the community benefit from this gift to TI? How do ratepayers win? TRC sell the block for $100,000 then go halves in the cost of a road that only benefits the silo group. I'm certain will cost TRC far more than the sale price. This will result in a net loss for TRC. Again I ask how is this a win for ratepayers? Then to Mr Paronella's comment that" local businesses and producers can expand their businesses and sell more product" – what a joke. This comment is typical, worthless spin. The Mayor is completely out of touch with reality. The only expansion will be for the shopping centre's owners so that they have more retail space to rent out to increase their profits - at ratepayers' expense! How can the abovementioned comments be taken seriously? In fact how can either party in this sham be taken seriously? Furthermore the suggestion that this deal results in the expansion of the shopping centre carpark is a further cover up. When the facility expands its retail floorspace it will do so into the existing carpark. So in
fact the TRC has gifted valuable retail space to TI. What is the commercial value of retail space? I think it would be far more than the sale price. The TRC cannot justify this sale on any level. Had this land been offered, with access, to an open auction it would have sold for over $1 million. I agree that it's a win win sale. TI wins with the ridiculously low price, wins by being able to extend retail floor space, wins by extending their carpark, wins by having TRC providing an easement for the purpose built road to the new carpark and wins again by reducing their stamp duty liability by not paying the full price in the first place. ALL at the expense of the ratepayers. Well done TRC – you came second once again. And of course the Biggest Loser is the community. Ed Kochi ATHERTON

Latest riverfront land release officially opens at Amaroo THE grand opening of Amaroo’s newest land release in Mareeba was a big hit for locals and visitors alike on Thursday, November 28. A large crowd was on hand to celebrate the opening of Bundanoon on the Barron – Amaroo Estate’s latest riverfront land release. The official grand opening event was attended by community members, businesses, Cr Kevin Davies, John Hastie and Jeannette Looney and many local guests who wanted to be one of the first to inspect the new riverfront allotments on offer. Mareeba Shire Councillor Cr Kevin Davies, who officially opened the event, commented on the contribution that Amaroo Estate has made and continues to make to the local community and the exceptional presentation and growth of the area on the Cairns side of town, as well as the economic benefits the development brings. Representing the Hastie
family, who were the original owners of the land, were John Hastie and his sister Jeanette Looney who travelled from Brisbane for the opening. John and Jeannette cut the ribbon to unveil the access lane “Betty’s Lane”, a tribute to the Hastie Family and their parents, the late Don and Betty Hastie. John commented that the area that is now Bundanoon on the Barron was formerly a part of Hasties’ Farm, that had been in the family for nearly 100 years and were impressed with the transformation of the farm property into now small acreage allot-

ments. Amaroo Estate’s Debbie Sweedman said “The privilege of being able to help people find their perfect lifestyle property and the pleasure gained from watching them turn their dreams into a reality is what she loves most.” Bundanoon on the Barron is the newest addition to Amaroo Estate development. It is a boutique and exclusive development which complements Bundanoon Stage 1, just across the road, which was completed in 2010. This unique development will prove to be a very popu-

MAREEBA cricket had a weekend of mixed results with the Seconds finishing their two dayer and Thirds playing a one day match against Mulgrave. Mareeba Seconds have come out with a win in their two day battle against Barron, a strong start last week set a solid foundation for Mareeba to capi-
talise and capitalise they did. Mareeba’s top order performed well with in depth batting and strong performances which helped propel their side to a respectable 188. Mareeba then put Barron in for another go at the red ball and minced through their side with Barron only reaching 6/77,
calling for a compulsory close of the innings, with Mareeba walking away with the win. Thirds didn’t have such luck in their fight with Mulgrave last Saturday. Mulgrave elected to bat first after a successful toss and went about putting on a respectable 163.
Mareeba set their eyes towards passing the total and looked determined, however wickets fell in clumps and even opener Brendan Falvo’s impressive 49 couldn’t save the side and Mareeba walked away with a loss.

Nasser makes history with double century Michael Salerno took four wickets for Atherton on Saturday.
HAVING fielded plenty of advice during the week, and after much deliberation, Atherton captain Tommy Boorman made a last minute decision to bat-on
on day two of the 2-day Cricket Far North match against Norths on Saturday. Paul Nasser returned to the crease 177* in a last wicket
stand with Dylan Pettingill and grabbed his opportunity by the horns, smacking the first ball of the day for 4. With the crowd riding every
delivery, Nasser and Pettingill soaked up the pressure, batting confidently to add 30 runs to the total off five overs. Paul repaid his team’s faith and brought the
house down hitting a 6 to reach his double-ton off the last ball of the 83rd over. Atherton declared their innings 9-299. Atherton took to the field
pumped by the efforts of Nasser and were off to a great start when Seppe Barletta picked up the Captain's wicket for none in the first over. Seppe struck again in his second over knocking the stumps over to have Norths 2-8. Norths dug in for a bit until Dylan Pettingill trapped their dangerman and broke an 80 run partnership, followed by a wicket for Tommy Boorman to see the top order off. Tommy continued his miserly bowling taking another two wickets and Michael Salerno picked up 4 wickets late in his second spell to dismiss Norths for 182. Atherton claimed a first innings win by 117 runs and elected to bat for the final hour of play, closing the match 6-80 in their second innings dig. It is believed Paul Nasser can lay claim to the first double-ton by an Atherton 1st Grade player at home, and sits 2nd behind Eddie Rosa for highest scores from and Atherton 1st Grade player in the modern era. Paul's stats are 203 not out off 253 balls; batting time 300 minutes / 83 overs; 25 Fours, 1 Six; scored 40 runs in the last wicket partnership of 55 before the declaration; 62% of the team's total runs. Result – Atherton 9-299 Dec. (P Nasser 203*, C Constant 38, T Boorman 17) Def. Norths 182 (M Salerno 4-83, T Boorman 3-31, S Barletta 2-28, D Pettingill 1-6); 2nd Innings Atherton 6-80 (M Salerno 31, T Boorman 26, C Constant 13) Atherton are at home to Cassowary Coast in a 2-day match 7 and 14 December.
Gladiators looking to improve on club culture WITH a new-look committee and senior playing group on hand for the upcoming 2020 season, the Mareeba Gladiators will be hoping to implement a club culture that becomes the envy of the Cairns District Rugby League competition.

A-Grade captain-coach Trent Barnard and senior club President Bevan Carroll noted how pleased they were to see such a turn-out for their Annual General Meeting (AGM) a couple of weeks back. “I think that’s a strong indi-

the club through worthwhile events and most importantly our performances on the field.” Barnard also took the opportunity to thank the club’s sponsors, noting that the club wouldn’t exist without their continued financial support.
“We wouldn’t be able to field a team without them, “he said. “And hopefully we can repay that favour by winning some games in 2020 and I definitely feel we’ll have the squad to do that.” Barnard said preseason be-
gins on January 14 and encouraged those interested in playing to come down to training. Barnard also encouraged interested Under 18s players to attend, as the Gladiators will be looking to field a side in 2020.
