ONE of the most popular events on the Tablelands is set to return to Yungaburra this weekend.

The Yungaburra markets will be held this Saturday, July 25, after being cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Yungaburra Markets coordinator Nicole Willinger said the last markets were held in February and that reopening with COVID still on everyone’s mind was fantastic and scary at the same time.

“We are concerned with the increasing levels of COVID-19

numbers down south and we always want to be looking after our community first,” she said.

“We want to do everything that we can to give our stall holders the opportunity to keep trading but also give people the opportunity to go to the markets and enjoy their fresh produce, but we need to do it in the safest way possible.”

To reopen, The Yungaburra Markets committee needed to implement a new range of safety and social distancing restrictions.

“We have removed some rows from the markets to give people more room to move around,” said Ms Willinger.

“We are putting up signage to remind everybody of social distancing and we are also asking people with flu like symptoms not to attend.

“We are also trying to implement a one way system, so that people walking in the same direction rather than into each other.”

Store holders have also been sent a checklist, which includes directives that all stall holders must have hand sanitizer and that every store must maintain social distancing.

Ms Willinger said they are also asking people not to linger.

“We are not providing seated food areas, there will still be food on sale but there won’t be places to sit,” she said.

“I am being inundated with people wanting to have a market stall, I am turning people away.

It’s flattering that the community want to be involved.”

One person who can’t wait to open up his stall at the upcoming Yungaburra Markets is Trevor Allwood from Tolga who has been selling his hand crafted wooden products at the market for over a year.

“It’s a good country type market, with lots of people making lots of things they make by hand,” said Mr Allwood.

“We are really looking forward to getting back and seeing our friends and customers.”

The Yungaburra Markets are on this weekend from 7,30am to 12.30pm.

Book Fair is back NOT only are the Yungaburra Markets back on the calendar with the lifting of COVID restrictions, the Yungaburra Book Fair is back for another year on Saturday, August 22.

This is the12th year of the Yungaburra Book fair and it’s one of the most popular events in the state for bibliophiles.

The Bookfair was started 12 years ago by a single book seller and since then it has expanded to include local booksellers, collectors and authors selling their wares at the Yungaburra community hall.

Organiser of the Bookfair Chris Tsilemanis said last year was their biggest year. ”This year we already have about 20 sellers and as it’s on the same day as the markets, we are hoping that this year will be just as big.”

The organisers are now looking for local authors and book sellers to exhibit on the day.

Cost is $25 per table or $12.50 per half table to share with another author/ seller.

The Yungaburra Book fair is on Saturday August 22 from 9am – 4pm, entry is free.

New way forward for marketing of Kuranda THE way Kuranda is marketed as a tourist destination is about get a new lease on life after Mareeba Shire Council awarded the tender to promote Kuranda to Bang Media in Cairns.

The tender was put out last month when Council chose to disband Tourism Kuranda (TK) after local businesses decided not to continue paying a tourism levy to fund TK. The tender, which will see Kuranda advertised as a tourism destination to Queenslanders and interstate visitors for the next 12 months, saw 22 applicants apply for the 12 month contract.

After the meeting, Mayor Angela Toppin said that they are very excited by this tender.

“We are very anxious to market Kuranda as quickly as possible, while Mareeba shire has weathered COVID quite well because of our agricultural industries, the tourism industry hasn’t.” Cr Toppin said.

“It has been a real worry that Kuranda was dead.

“Bang Media are well placed to market Kuranda and put it on centre stage to the rest of Australia.”

Mayor Toppin also said that council is very excited about some of the new initiatives to be rolled out over the next 12 months.

TOURISM: Bang Media will work with Council and the Kuranda business community to market the destination to the rest of Australia.

“We are excited about some of the new projects that we have started in Kuranda like the Barron Falls walking trails, which are breathtaking.”

THE Tablelands tourism promoter has announced that they are rebranding with a slight name change and new logo.

Tropical Tablelands Tourism, the corporate arm of Discover Atherton Tablelands, is rebranding to Tourism Atherton Tablelands in a move they claim is designed to consolidate the marketing potential of the region.

Eddy Nye, chair of Tourism Atherton Tablelands, said the rebranding would provide a fresh new look and better align with the successful Discover Atherton Tablelands consumer destination brand.

The move would see Tourism Atherton Tablelands align with other tourism organisations such as Tourism Port Douglas Daintree and Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

“The Atherton Tablelands is so much more than ‘tropical tablelands’ suggests. Up here we grow papaws and mangoes and bush tucker next to blueberries and stone fruit - produce that is more usually related to cooler climate foodie destinations like Tasmania,” Mr Nye said.

“Because of the altitude, our weather is much cooler without the humidity that is usually associated with a tropical holiday.”

Council projects set to get underway

BY PHIL BRANDEL LOCAL Council’s were big winners in the the State Government’s $200 million COVID works for Queensland program.

The new funding will go towards 123 projects across Far North Queensland, which is expected to create or support 890 local jobs.

Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) was one of the biggest recipients receiving $2.5 million in funding.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin welcomed the funding announcement and said that it will kick off a list of shovelready projects across the Shire.

“Council has identified

a number of worthy projects across the Shire that will enhance the liveability of the Shire, create jobs and boost the local economy,” Cr Toppin said.

“The program will create jobs and stimulate the local economy post-COVID.” One of the first projects to get underway is a new pound and animal refuge which council is now taking tenders for the new design.

“The money is going to be used to build new facilities at the councils pound, we try and provide the best facilities we can but this is long overdue.”

vide an additional animal refuge service, and due to funding conditions this all needs to be completed before the end of this financial year so we will be moving very quickly on this.”

Some of the other funding is going towards moving the current Mareeba library to the Cedric Davies Community Hub which is expected to happen before the end of the year and solar lighting at the Mareeba Bicentennial lakes.

The Tablelands Regional Council also received more than $2 million in funding with Mayor Rod Marti saying “We appreciate the State Government’s support and the opportunity this funding provides to upgrade and enhance facilities for the community.”

Mr Marti said that one of TRC’s priority projects is the Ravenshoe Water Main Upgrade “We are continuing water improvement work in the Ravenshoe area by integrating proposed reservoir into the water supply scheme.” he said.

There will also be $450,000 upgrade to the TRC animal management facility “Current facilities are not meeting our needs. Plans include 14 RSPCA-spec kennels, separate cat room, vet/treatment room, storage area for food, beds, towels and cleaning equipment and a small reception/office where pet owners can come to pick up their animals.”

Cr Marti said Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the projects would make a difference to the region.

“I am very pleased that pro-

jects like installing new playground equipment at the Lions Park in Cooktown and the construction of a new splash park in Wujal Wujal to help keep the children safe from crocodiles will be funded through this fantastic initiative,” Ms Lui said.

“While there’s no doubt our people are resilient, I know these projects, and the jobs they create, will be extremely welcome during this tough time.

“We’re continuing to manage the health response and that means we can start delivering Queensland’s plan for economic recovery,” she said.

MSC Projects include: Shire-wide Council facility upgrades (including the upgrade of halls, amenities blocks, swimming pool facilities and caravan parks), Mareeba Pound and Animal Refuge, Mareeba Bicentennial Lakes solar lighting, Shirewide solar energy initiatives and the Cedric Davies Community Hub (Library Project).

Car rally dream set to come alive duces blood flow to the brain which can cause headaches, seizures and difficulty speaking.

Founder of Moyamoya Australia and Ravenshoe local Nicola Baker’s 16 year old son, Jed, suffers from Moyamoya disease and his 17th birthday falls on the long weekend in October, “every birthday we have with him is a blessing,” she said.

Mrs Baker decided to organise the Smokey Blue Rally after she “had a dream” about the event and decided to make it a reality.

“I had a dream and I woke up and thought that sounds like a really great idea so I made some phone calls and by 9.30 that morning I had a number of people on the committee, I had Undara signed up and it started to snowball from there,” she said.

“As people are hearing about it more they are coming forward and asking what can I do to help.

“If your car is roadworthy than you are eligible to participate, but we do want everyone to try to wear blue to promote Moyamoya awareness.”

BY RHYS THOMAS IT all started with a dream for a Ravenshoe mum. A dream to promote local tourism while raising awareness for the rare Moyamoya disease. The dream has now been made a reality through the all new Smokey Blue Rally.

Towns across the region are set to benefit from the new

event which will take place over the October long weekend. The event will raise awareness for Moyamoya disease and give people the opportunity to visit towns and inject some money back into the local communities.

The Smokey Blue Rally is an event that has been organised by Moyamoya Australia and will be a ‘write your own adventure’

rally where participants must visit a minimum of five towns across the Tablelands and collect ‘treasure’.

After finding all of the treasure the participants will make their way out to Undara where there will be prizes, trophy’s, food and a live band.

MoyaMoya disease is a rare blood vessel disorder which re-

port and her idea has been well received. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winners of the Rally at Undara on the night of October 3, followed by live music and the party.

Energy grants for businesses SMALL businesses will get a chance to slash their power bills after the Australian Government introduced a new program to help the economy recover from COVID-19.

The Energy Efficient Communities Program is available to small businesses with an annual turnover of less than $10 million with the businesses able to get up to $20,000 out of the $9 million nationwide pool.

The money must be used to upgrade equipment to reduce energy consumption, invest in monitoring systems to better manage energy use and conduct energy audits to investigate other opportunities for efficiency.

To ensure an equitable distribution of the funding across all of Australia up to three grants per electorate will be awarded to

eligible businesses.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin is encouraging eligible businesses to look into this program and to start reaping the benefits.

“Small business plays an integral part in the Shire’s economy,” she said.

“I strongly support any assistance available for small businesses as the economy starts to re-boot following COVID-19.

“I welcome the announcement from the Morrison Government to support small businesses and urge those eligible businesses across our Shire to apply.”

STAGE three of the Mareeba Industrial Park has been completed opening up over 110,000 square metres of prime commercial, industrial and agricultural real estate.

The Stage three works commenced in March of 2019 with them finishing early this month.

The $3.5 million expansion was funded by both the Mareeba Shire Council and the Queensland Governments Building our Regions program.

The program supports local government infrastructure projects in regional communi-

ties and has a target of creating job-creating infrastructure that will improve economic conditions and liveability.

Stage three of the development has linked Effley Street and Keegan Street which enables council to have 28 fully serviced lots available for immediate purchase.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin said that the expansion would strengthen Mareeba’s position as an industrial hub for northern Australia.

“The land available at the Mareeba Industrial Park will allow for new businesses to

operate out of the hub in areas such as agriculture, transport and logistics, horticulture and manufacturing,” Cr Toppin said.

“The expansion will create job opportunities and boost the local economy.

“I thank the Queensland Government for recognising and supporting regional development in the Mareeba Shire.”

Minister for State Development, Tourism and Innovation Kate Jones said that with the current economic headwinds Queensland must deliver its plan to support jobs now and into the future.

“An essential part of Queensland’s plan to recover is partnerships with local councils, through programs like Building our Regions, that deliver local projects and create local jobs,” she said.

“Projects funded through Building our Regions, like the Mareeba Industrial Park in partnership with Mareeba Shire Council, create hundreds of construction jobs across Queensland and supports even more future employment opportunities for locals.”

The Brewers Association of Australia said that it will serve as another blow to Australians’ budgets and struggling hospitality venues.

“Now is not the time to be ramping up taxes on consumers,” Brewers Association of Australia CEO Brett Heffernan said.

“With more and more Aussies out of work and everyone counting their pennies, jacking up the beer tax would be another blow to punters and publicans, alike.

August 1 is the deadline for averting the next hip-pocket slug to Australians doing it tough.”

Beer tax in Australia has increased in line with the consumer price index every six months since August 1983 and now accounts for 42 per cent of a typical stubby or carton of beer.

Australians now pay the fourth-highest beer tax in the world before GST, after Finland, Japan and Norway.

“Putting up the tax in August would be another hit to pubs, clubs and the hundreds of thousands of Australians they need to re-employ once they can re-open

in full. Higher taxes will only make that challenge harder when so many are on their knees.” Mr Heffernan said.

The excise rate for beer increased 1.2 per cent on 3 February, with the Australian government making around $3.6 billion from the tax.

Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said that just as pubs are getting back on their feet they are going to take another hit.

“The people that got worst hit with Coronavirus restrictions was the hospitality/tourism industry,” he said.

“The hoteliers and publicans in our towns copped it and now they are the industry being hit worst again.

“I am just sick and tired of the self-righteous, morally superior, holier-than-now, restrict everything brigade who are pushing this.”

Mr Katter said that pubs and hotels were a place where men could go and de-stress and forget their problems “It is no wonder we have the highest suicide rates amongst men in the world and it is only going to get worse,” Mr Katter said.

“To do this in the middle of COVID is a terrible thing; the hospitality industry is on its knees.

“Despite this, the federal government is going to increase the tax on beer again in August.

“Almost half a million Australian hospitality workers have lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic. Pubs are struggling to keep their doors open after the lockdown. They can’t take another hit.” Mr Katter said.

Owner of the Barron Valley Hotel in Atherton, Mick Nasser said the increase in beer tax could not come at a worse time for the hospitality industry.

“It’s the worst thing in the world; we are one of the highest tax nations for alcohol in the world,” Mr Nasser said.

“The government already picks up over 40 per cent in tax on alcohol and they just keep hitting everybody in the back pocket.

“The CPI increase on alcohol should cease, especially with COVID about. We have to put up our prices every 6 months, it’s a nightmare and the government gets it all.”

Mr Nasser said that since stage 3 restrictions were lifted dining has picked up, but due to social distancing not so much in the public bars.

“At the end of the day with the risk of fines and restricted numbers we wonder if it’s even

worthwhile opening our bars, maybe we should just keep our restaurants going.”

Police seek witnesses

A TWENTY one year old who was killed in quad bike crash last week is being remembered as a quiet achiever who loved the great outdoors.

Tyler Pashen, from Julatten, was riding with friends on Quaids Road near Mount Molloy when the ATV they were on rolled down an embankment.

Mareeba police Acting Inspector Greg Giles said three people were on the vehicle at the time of the Quaids Road crash.

“It appears, they have gone too close to the embankment and have gone down the embankment and hit a rock,” he said.

It’s understood the other two riders were taken to Ma-

reeba Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police investigating the fatal accident are appealing for witnesses.

Anyone who may have seen a red Honda ATV sideby-side with a dog in the back tray on Quaids Road on Saturday, July 11 is asked to contact police.

Quaids Road is a private bitumen sealed road that has public access and starts opposite the Big Mitchell Creek Reserve.

Quad bike death linked to rollover THE death of Julatten resident Tyler Pashen has tragically taken the 2020 quad bike death toll to 11.

In 2019 The Federal Government announced new laws requiring new quad bikes to be fitted with mandatory rollover protection, after pressure from farming and medical groups.

All quad bikes sold after October 2021, will need to be fitted with the rollover protection.

This then led to the big four quad bike manufacturers Yamaha, Honda, Polaris and Suzuki announcing that they would stop supplying quad bikes to the Australian market.

While the big four have announced that they will exit the Australian market in 2021, one company has announced that not only will they be staying in the Australian Market; but they will also be fitting the mandatory safety equipment to their quad bikes immediately, almost a year ahead of schedule.

Michael Poynton Director of Mojo Motorcycles, the Australian distributor for CFMOTO, said that they have already released a 400cc quad bike that complies with stage 2 of the Australian Government mandatory Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard.

The Australian Government announced the introduction of the Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard in October 2019. The requirements under stage 1 must be met by October 11th 2020, and the requirements under stage 2 by October 11th 2021.

Over the next three months, Mojo Motorcycles will be introducing an updated range of CFMOTO quad bikes that meet stage 2 requirements of the Consumer Goods (Quad

Bike) Safety Standard. The entire CFMOTO quad bike range will be updated to meet the requirements of stage 2 by October 2020, one year ahead of the mandatory timeline.

“We want to reassure Aussie farmers that CFMOTO quad bikes are here to stay,” said Mr Poynton.

“By introducing a new quad bike range that complies with stage 2 of the Consumer Goods Quad Bike Safety Standard requirements by October 2020, one year ahead of the mandatory timeline, shows our commitment to remain in the Australian market. Following our own assessment of the Consumer Goods (Quad Bikes) Safety Standard in 2019, we made the decision to remain in the Australian market with CFMOTO quad bikes.”

Stage 2 of the standard also requires the fitment of an operator protection device (OPD).

To meet this requirement, Mojo Motorcycles worked with Quadbar, an Australian OPD manufacturer on a tailored OPD solution that will installed by their dealers during the pre-delivery process.

“Quadbar was one of two OPD manufacturers listed in the Government standard. Being an Australian made product with 13 years of research and development invested in their design, we viewed them as a good partner to work with for the supply of OPDs to meet the requirements of stage 2 under the standard,” said Poynton.

The Cairns and Hinterlands Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) is bringing a set of Well Women’s Clinics to the Tablelands next month with all available services geared towards women’s health.

The clinics have been operating around the region for some time and are now scheduled to return to the Tablelands in August.

Cervical Screening Tests (Pap Smears), Sexual Health Screening and Breast Awareness are just some of the services that are being offered with no referral required.

The clinics will arrive at Mt Garnet Primary Health Care Centre on August 17, Atherton Community Health on August 25, Malanda Health Centre August 25 and finally Mareeba Hospital on August 27.

CHHHS Clinical Nurse Consultant Cher Heritage is encouraging women to attend these

clinics to get a head start on their health.

“The clinics are for well women and for women that have any health concerns, women of all ages from puberty through to menopause and beyond,” they said.

“The services we offer include pap smears, sexual health screening as well as advice on menopause, breast health, nutrition, contraception, bowel heath and domestic violence.

“We also provide support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and women from non-English speaking backgrounds.”

ELDERLY residents of the Tablelands will get the chance to still live comfortably in their own homes after construction started on nine purpose built units last Thursday.

Spear headed by RADCARE Support Services the units are specifically designed to service elderly residents and will feature hand rails in the bathrooms, wider doorways and remote operated garages.

RADCARE Support Services is an independent and locally operated organisation that specifies in providing Home Care Packages that are funded by the Federal Government.

They aim to support higher

needs aged people by enabling them to stay at home rather than going into full time care by providing domestic assistance, personal care and gardening and clinical care to over 100 aged care clients across the Atherton Tablelands.

Tina Quayle the Manager of RADCARE Support Services, along with the RADCARE Management Committee, has held the long term vision of building accommodation to service the elderly which evolved into building units for those who would like to remain independently at home.

New aged care home approved

MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) met for their monthly ordinary Council meeting last week and among the raft of decisions was the approval of a new aged care home in Mareeba.

Croft developments made an application for a material change of use for land at 2-18 Haren Street, Mareeba to build an aged care facility with 120 beds.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin supported the development saying there was a demand for an additional aged care facility in the Shire.

“I welcome this development with open arms given Mareeba has an ageing population with limited residential health care residential options close to home,” she said.

“The development will boost

the local economy and create job opportunities for nursing staff, cleaners, cooks and other care staff to gain employment when the facility is operating.”

The proposed development will include 120 rooms across five-wings, several communal lounges, activity rooms and dining areas in addition to doctor and nursing facilities, a library, hairdresser, café and chapel,

two kitchens, office spaces and meeting rooms.

Angela Toppin said it’s something that is very exciting and overdue for the shire.

“Attracting more aged care facilities to our shire is a top priority.” The developers will now need to submit building plans.

The motion was passed unanimously.

LEADER of Katter’s Australia Party (KAP), Robbie Katter has announced Tanika Parker as the parties new candidate for the electorate of Cook.

Mr Katter, who was in Mareeba to make the announcement on Monday, June 20, said that the Cook electorate deserved more than it had received under the past two ALP terms.

Ms Parker was born in Townsville and is a proud Guguu Yimithirr woman growing up around Hopevale and Cooktown before leaving to study nursing at JCU in Townsville.

Ms Parker has been a participant in Mareeba and Cape York rodeos talent quest and is pas-

sionate about the lifestyle and economy of Cook.

“If elected, I will bring the office back to Mareeba, fight to have Mareeba Hospital upgraded as the central hospital for the whole of the Cape and surrounds and create infrastructure such as ports which will open up the cattle industry in Mareeba and the Cape,” she said.

Ms Parker said there are several issues facing the residents of the cape including health and youth crime.

“As part of my studies I’ve done a lot of research into food and food access in Cooktown and Hopevale and during my studies I noticed disparities with healthcare throughout the cape.”

“There are also disparities for Indigenous people and a lack of access to resources on the cape.

“We also want to concentrate on Mareeba by making it the gateway to the cape and that’s what I intend to do.”

Green thumbs given gift

MICHAEL and Lindy Alba have been awarded a special plaque courtesy of Mareeba State School (MSS) to thank them for all the work that they have done and continue to do in the school’s community garden.

The community garden was the brainchild of MSS year one teacher Skye Clarkson, who had decided to give the students a chance to learn their gardening skills hands on.

She asked ex-landscapers and avid gardeners Michael and Lindy Alba to assist with the gardens creation and maintenance and to share their knowledge of gardening with the students.

With their help the small garden flourished and enabled the students to learn all about garden maintenance and the produce that can be grown and eaten from a garden.

Michael was excited to start helping in the MSS community garden as he hoped to help educate the students and share with them some of the health benefits he receives from gardening.

“I love helping people and designing gardens and a school is a great place to have a garden,” he said.

“I’ve always had a passion for gardening ever since I was a small child it’s something that keeps me fit and healthy.

“I just love being in the garden so I thought that people could get some of the same benefits that I get from being in

the garden.”

After being asked to assist with the garden both Michael and Lindy have had a massive hand in garden education.

“Prior to the virus there were different groups of children coming into the garden and I saw their excitement in listening to what I had to say,” Michael said.

“There was a group of kids that was supposed to be naughty and yet I didn’t see any of that when they were in the garden, they were calm and happy to help out.

“It’s very rewarding and satisfying to see the kids learning and trying to take that knowledge home.”

It is not only the students who are reaping the rewards of the community garden, as many of the students return home and want to continue gardening.

“We’ve also had feedback from parents with their kids coming home and asking their parents to do a garden at home,” Lindy said.

“Because Michael and I and going into retirement now it’s really satisfying to see the kids learning.”

The MSS staff organised to donate the plaque to show their appreciation to Michael and Lindy for all the work they do, Mrs Clarkson stated it was a “small token” which was quickly corrected by Lindy saying it was a “large token” to them.

They received the gift on June 22 and it was in the form of a specially made wooden

seat with the engraved plaque attached.

Michael added that often while working in the garden teachers will approach him and express their appreciation and thanks to both Michael and Lindy for the work they do.

“To me that feels really good to be appreciated or acknowledged for what I have been doing in the garden,” he said.

“Just that is enough we don’t need all these presents.”

The gardens benefits extend beyond learning how to plant but coupled with their usual learning methods the students also learn why they are doing certain things in the garden.

Mrs Clarkson believes that a good balance of both indoor and outdoor learning can really benefit the students and even help them concentrate.

“The garden has lots of learning benefits for our students, we are able to take our indoor classroom learning into the outdoor environment,” she said.

“A lot of students come to the garden on their breaks and just walk through the garden.

“It’s important to have a balance of hands-on learning and other learning methods.”

The gardens fruition was also assisted by other members of the community with donations of materials and seedlings when the garden was first being built.

Rethinking education to solve the challenges of the future IT’S no secret that we are living in uncertain times. Change is currently so rapid in today’s world that it is impossible to predict the jobs and skills that will be needed in 20 years’ time.

Ms Bowen explains that the aim of Steiner education is to educate the whole child – ‘head, heart and hands’.

Starting in early childhood, playbased learning is valued above any introduction of formal academic instruction to allow for individual differences and gives children time for the age-appropriate development of important human faculties – problemsolving, communicating, empathising, understanding, resilience – all very important and necessary attributes for tomorrow’s adults,” she said.

“And to nurture this important development, you won’t find a tablet or computer in sight.”

At CHSS, the 4-6 year olds experience a gentle introduction to early schooling with beautiful, home-like spaces, oral story-telling, music, painting, drawing, beeswax modelling, self-directed play, outdoor activities like gardening, home tasks like cooking and woodwork with oral literacy

“This is an education that responds to where the child is ‘at’ and one that many parents at the school say they wished they had had,” said Ms Bowen.

Ms Bowen said that 4% of students currently come from the Mareeba region with private bus services operating for local students to attend.

Author seeks help to finish ANZAC book FOR the past two years local author and historian Michael Musumeci has been writing and researching a book about Mareeba ANZAC’s who were killed in action, but there is one piece of the puzzle that is missing.

Michael has joined local historical groups, searched through old war records and newspapers and also spoken to locals and veterans. Scouring through piles of archives and records, Michael realised there was one piece of information that he was still missing - a photo of Sgt William Donald Dickson DCM, MM No 1611A. According to Michael’s research William Donald Dickson was born on the 20th June 1893 in Mareeba, to parents William and Margaret Dickson.

His father ran a successful bakery on Byrnes Street in Mareeba for many years in the early 1900’s.

William had two brothers and four sisters. Brother David took over the bakery, after William Sr retired and brother Gordon became a Chemist.

Younger sisters Violet and Jean Dickson taught music for many years at their address in Walsh Street and were well known within the community.

Alice Dickson married John William Samways and they had three sons, Douglas, Gordon and Donald. Donald was named in honour of his Uncle, Sgt William Donald Dickson.

William Enlisted on the 11th November 1916 in Cairns and he was promoted to Sergeant.

On the 19th June 1917 he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and the Military Medal.

Tragically Sgt Dickson suffered a bullet wound to the chest on the 8th August 1918, during the battle of Amiens in France and died the following day.

Sergeant Dickson is now at rest within the confines of the Villers Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Villers Bretonneux, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France.

When Donald’s sisters passed away the house was sold via auction in the early 1980’s as well as an auction of all of the household possessions. The house used to stand where a block of units now stand next to the Mosque on Walsh Street.

Mr Musumeci is hoping that a distant relative of Sgt Dickson or a local historian may have photos of the missing Mareeba ANZAC. “The house and contents were all sold and I’m hoping someone has kept them. Mr Dickson was awarded two medals and was part of the 47th Battalion so someone may have a group photo with Sgt Dickson in the photo,” said Mr Musumeci.

“I’ve searched at the Australian War memorial and all the locals RSL’s and historical groups and museums and there is not a single photo of him anywhere.

“If we can find this photo, it will be like finding a needle in the biggest haystack.”

Bill passed for vision impaired THE vision-impaired community has had a big win this week after a key Bill was passed in parliament allowing them to apply for a disability parking permit.

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said that after many years of lobbying on behalf of visionimpaired constituents, he was thrilled with the outcome.

February 2018 was when Mr Knuth was alerted to the discrimination faced by visually impaired people and discovered that they were not regarded as eligible to receive a Disability Parking Permit in Queensland.

A survey of Guide Dogs Queensland clients found 92 per cent felt unsafe when moving through carparks and 58 per cent avoided going out altogether due to having to navigate these busy traffic environments.

Mr Knuth is very pleased to have had the bill passed and a win for the vision-impaired community across the region.

“When I first became aware that the vision-impaired were excluded from accessing a disability car park, I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

“I raised the issue in parliament and took it to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads.

“It’s been a long time coming but we are pleased to have a win for vulnerable Queenslanders.”

Mr Knuth participated in a disability parking reform discussion with Guide Dogs Queensland at Parliament House where he was guided by a guide dog using a cane, blindfolded.

Through the experience he “gained an even deeper appreciation” for the plight of the vision

impaired after participating.

“That was an eye-opening experience which allowed me to gain a valuable insight into the difficulties someone who is vision-imparied faces on a daily basis,” he said.

“The fact a vision-impaired person normally has to navigate through gutters, parked cars and moving traffic to try and get to a shopping centre when there is a parking space right beside that shopping centre that they could use, is just ridiculous.

“I am relieved they will no longer need to do that.”

Atherton resident Geoff Skinner said he was excited that after years of lobbying that the bill has been passed.

“As a guide dog user I wish to thank Mr Knuth for his efforts in lobbying the Queensland Government to allow blind and vision-impaired Queenslanders to access the Disability Parking Permit Scheme,” he said.

“Car parks can be a real challenge for the vision impaired.

“Being able to park close to building entrances, such as shopping centres, will allow safer mobility without having to rely on a sighted person to ensure our safety.”

Guide Dogs Queensland CEO Michael Knightly said the passing of the Bill was “a huge win for Queenslanders with vision loss, who deserve to feel safe in our community”.

“During many years of campaigning, we found the public were surprised to learn that vehicles transporting people who were blind or had significant vision loss in Queensland were unable to use the disabil-

Growers call for State to slash to energy prices FNQ Growers has called for the Queensland Government to lower the regulated electricity price to help with primary producer’s production.

FNQ Growers joined many of the state’s agricultural lobby groups calling for changes when they provided comment on the Queensland Competition Authority’s Draft Determination for Regulated Retail Electricity Prices for 2020-21.

FNQ Growers Chair Joe Moro said horticultural growers needed a flat rate of 16c/kw tariff, with no demand tariff and no supply charge which will help to boost the local economy and stimulate growth.

“This flat rate is regarded by industry and growers as the ‘sweet spot’ of electricity af-

fordability,” he said.

“This is because it enables growers to be economically sustainable and continue to contribute to the state’s long termadvantage in the production of food.

“By lowering the price of electricity primary producers will be able to increase production, the charge is something that growers have little control over and yet it is one that is critical for the operation of a farm.”

Costs associated with electricity tariffs, metres and disconnections are also on the agenda for FNQ Growers, these costs are a result of transitional tariffs ending, borne by the electricity network, not by growers who are unable to pass these costs on.

Councillor Bernie Wilce said that participants will gain insights and tools to support others during disasters and each session will be repeated to allow as many people to attend as possible.

“Lyndal is an experienced disaster management profes-

sional and expert facilitator and she will be delivering four modules over four weeks — Disaster Context, Psychological Responses, Leadership, and Strengths-Based Community Recovery.”

The TRC is also hosting a free webinar with Dr Rob Gordon, a clinical psychologist who has worked in disasters in Australia and New Zealand for nearly 40 years.

The webinars are for community groups and individuals interested in disaster recovery.

1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. 2. Wrap each beetroot in aluminium foil and roast them for 1 to 2 hours until soft and tender.

3. Once the beetroots are roasted, remove them from the oven and let them cool. Peel the skin and chop them into chunks.

4. Place the beetroots, chickpeas and garlic into a food processor and blend for 1 minute.

5. Add tahini, lemon juice, salt, cumin, 1 teaspoon of water and blend until the hummus becomes smooth and creamy.Taste and adjust the seasonings, adding more salt or lemon if needed 6. Refrigerate or use immediately. Roasted beetroot hummus will last in the fridge for approximately 1 week.

(RCC is managed by a Collective of members and elected Office Bearers) POSITION VACANT Bus Driver - Social Support Group Rural and Remote Home Care Service Rural and Remote Home Care Service is a Home Support Program funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and the State Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors.

We aim to maintain and promote independence and quality of life for the frail aged, younger people with disabilities and carers, by providing a flexible variety of services to meet each person’s unique set of circumstances.

We are seeking a suitably qualified and/or experienced person to fill the position of Bus Driver - Social Support Group with this program.

JOB SUMMARY This is a casual position for 9 hours per fortnight to be worked every alternate Friday as per the Rural and Remote Home Care Service Social Support Program Calendar.

This position is based in Ravenshoe and is paid in accordance with the Passenger Vehicle Transportation Award 2010 – Grade 3 (less than 25 seats) at a rate of $28.46 per hour. Hours of work: 7.30am to 5pm (includes half hour unpaid lunch break).

The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to working with frail aged and younger people with disabilities and some prior experience in this field of work is an advantage.

REQUIREMENTS • Experienced in driving buses or similar large vehicles and towing, reversing, parking with a trailer • Current LR licence and Industry Authority Card from the Department of Transport • Current National Police Check • Current First Aid and CPR certificate an advantage (you will be paid a first aid allowance if certification is maintained) DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS This position is responsible to the RnR Program Manager and will work under the general direction of the Social Support Group Assistant during scheduled bus trips.

It is the primary responsibility of the Bus Driver to ensure the safety of clients, staff and volunteers by obeying road rules, following designated route/s and adhering to pickup and drop off schedules.

The driver is also responsible for assessing, reporting and managing any vehicular risks by completing the necessary pre-start, checklists and mileage forms and alerting the Social Support Group Assistant immediately of any concerns throughout the journey.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • The driver will assist staff and volunteers to load and safely secure client’s items and if required, assist with clients embarking and disembarking the bus.

• The driver will ensure the bus departs Atherton by 2pm at the latest to allow sufficient time for the return journey to Ravenshoe.

• Upon return the bus is to be refueled to a full tank.

• Return odometer reading noted.

• The driver is responsible for cleaning the bus inside and out upon return to 17 Moore Street, Ravenshoe.

All rubbish is to be removed and the bus left in a clean and tidy state.

Any WH&S paperwork completed and submitted to the Social Support Group Assistant prior to finishing.

SCHADS Industry Awards Level 3.1.

Shooters set for target

SHOOTERS will get the chance to dust off their rifles and get ready to compete after the Atherton Tablelands Gun Club (ATGC) announced that they will return to competition shooting as of this Saturday, July 25.

The ATGC stopped their competition shooting in early May of this year due to the COVID-19 restrictions; now after being allowed to practice for some weeks they have been given the all clear to resume competitive shooting.

Unlike other shooting clubs the ATGC focuses on shooting targets and often participates in events like trench and skeet shooting which are featured in the Olympics.

However there are a host of other types of shooting events that members participate in to polish their skills.

Shooters are given grades to help them gauge their skills from C Grade to AA Elite, which is reserved for the most skilled members of the club.

The club was garnering up

to 50 shooters at their events before COVID-19 closed them down and ATGC Secretary Bradley Price is excited for the competition to resume.

“It will be great to get back into competition shooting again,” he said.

“Practice is not the same as proper shooting you haven’t got the competitiveness there.

“It’s a very friendly and inclusive sport that anyone can do from young, old or even disabled members can shoot.

“It’s safer than football as long as you hold the gun the right way round.”

The club is open to shooters of all ages and skill levels with some shooters being as young as 12 or as old as 92.

The club partakes in practices every second and fourth Saturday of every month and eager residents are welcome along to try their hand at shooting.

RACEGOERS returned to the track on Saturday for the Atherton Turf Club’s first race day with patrons since COVID-19 restrictions were introduced earlier this year.

The next race day for Atherton Turf Club will be held on Saturday, August 1.

RACE RESULTS: Race 1 – Winner: John The Rodent, Second: The Frontier, Third: Bold Expectations.

Race 2 – Winner: Scaramouche, Second: Super Dancer, Third: Perfectly Posh.

Race 3 – Winner: Labrusco, Seond: Double Denman, Third: Purple Grey.

Race 4 – Winner: Buxton, Second: Saxophone, Third: The Groom.

Race 5 – Winner: Soldati, Second: Beat It, Third: Sweet June.

Free fitness TABLELANDS residents will get the chance to shed some of their COVID kilos after the Tablelands Regional Council announced 20 weeks of free fitness classes.

After partnering with Live Life Get Active residents of TRC will be able to participate in 20 weeks of free fitness classes.

Currently the classes contain elements of cross training and yoga with the boxing element currently on hold due to social distancing.

TRC Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew believes that having a healthy body and mind is a great way to maintain physical and mental wellbeing.

“A regular fitness regime is important for physical and mental wellbeing and these ‘camps’ are a great way to get into a routine,” he said.

“The weekly schedule of cross training and yoga help

develop cardio capacity and improve strength, toning, balance and flexibility.

“These camps are delivered by local, accredited trainers and participants also receive access to an online fitness platform and a free nutritional program with easy-to-follow recipes, videos and blogs.” The ‘camps’ run for 45 minutes.

The program started last Wednesday, 15 July at 6.30am at St Joseph’s Parish School in Atherton and will run from Monday to Friday for the 20 weeks during the school term.

Council is also in the process of establishing programs in Malanda and Ravenshoe to broaden the community’s access to the service.

Mixed results for Bulls

THE Mareeba United Football Club travelled away to take on the Innisfail Cutters on Saturday resulting in a mixed bag of results for the club.

The under 15, 16 and 17‘s notched up their second win on the trot with a 5-1 win over the Souths FC while the Men’s second division continued their impressive form with a 1-0 win over the Comets on Friday night.

In a full day of football at

Steve Corica Oval the ladies reserves lost 3-2 to Innisfail, Mareeba’s youth team continued their excellent run of form with a 3-0 win while the Men’s reserves we held to a 3-3 draw.

The Premier ladies signalled their intentions for the season with a thumping 6-0 win over the Cutter’s traditionally a powerhouse in women’s football.

The Men’s premier team continued their shaky start to the season with a 3-1 loss to the

Cutter’s; the result puts them at the wrong end of the table.

The Bulls had a terrible start to the game losing Kane Alderton with a knee injury early on and later in the match red cards to Darcy McCormack and Micko Van Der Vyver.

Defensive errors again cost the bulls and will need to pick themselves up as the come up against Leichhardt this weekend at home.

Racing returns THERE were grins all round with the return to dirt track motor racing for the Tableland Competition Car Club at Herberton’s Tepon Speedway on Sunday.

Plenty of action entertained the healthy spectator crowd, with Mark Jorgensen

and Michael Buckingham from Mareeba having a very successful debut at the track.

Brad Brook’s beautifully turned out car had one spin too many, which ended his day with suspension damage.
