“It’s really great recognition for me as the first female to win this award,” she said.

“I do a lot of work in the food and beverage space particularly in Queensland and I am really passionate about Queensland produce.

“This is a really good opportunity for me to promote many of the great food producers that we have here in Queensland.”

Krista sees this award as a great opportunity to not only

grow her business but to also assist with other businesses growth.

“I think this is a great platform for me to get access to more producers and inevitably help them with their sales connections,” she said.

“I can put my hand out there and help other people as well, it’s a real great synergy and I’m really looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.

“We will continue to help our local farmers with solutions for their excess produce.”

Tom’s Triumph for better roads

The strategic inland Queensland road network has been named as a nationally significant priority on Infrastructure Australia’s 2020 Infrastructure Priority List. This is a major achievement for the Inland Queensland Roads Action Project (IQ-RAP) and all 34 funding partners.

The project crosses nearly 70 per cent of Queensland, including 28 local government areas.

According to the Infrastructure Australia website “The In-

frastructure Priority List is the authoritative guide to the priority infrastructure investments Australia needs to secure a sustainable and prosperous future.

“The Priority List has a strong record of driving national investment and has become a key reference point for governments at all levels.”

Mayor Gilmore says “If we get the road from Mareeba to Melbourne fixed, it will save about 600 kilometres per trip.

“That means if you’re taking fresh produce to the Melbourne markets, you get them down to the markets sooner, cheaper and in better condition.

“It also means the cost of transport would reduce, if transporting cattle, animal welfare improves and it also helps to alleviate driver fatigue.”

Infrastructure Australia is the independent authority that makes recommendations to the federal government in terms of budget for infrastructure across Australia and Mayor Gilmore says getting on that list as a priority project has been 4 years in the making.

“I believe we have done a great service to industry and the community,” he said.

As Mayor Gilmore’s tenure comes to a close he reflected that “It’s one of the things that I am very proud of to have been a part of over the last 4 years. I was part of a very small committee with other mayors across Queensland. It’s been an extraordinary journey.”

THE annual KP Mango Competition has come to a close for another year and it was the competitions biggest year to date.

There certainly wasn’t a shortage of big mangoes provided by locals in the region with

dozens of mangoes entered.

On Thursday, March 12, at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon meet the candidate’s event, the winners of the 2019/2020 KP Mango competition were announced.

First place went to Sienna and Liam Avolio with their 1.662kg mango. Second place went to Milan Maloberti with his 1.66kg mango and in third place was Lucy Ros with her 1.46kg mango. Congratulations

The rules of the competition were that the Mangoes had be delivered into The Express office with a photo clearly showing the weight of the mango on digital scales and they had to be

The competition ran over harvest time from November to February and aimed to find the biggest KP (Kensington Pride) Mango by any farmer or from any backyard tree in the district.

The mango competition, now in its seventh year, is an initiative of The Express and is sponsored

Australia’s last Aboriginal tracker passes away crop.

Russell Rhodes Patrol Group Inspector Tablelands Patrol Group issued a statement on the death of Mr Port.

“From 2003 to 2008 I was the QPS Inspector for Cape York and Torres Strait and I regularly worked at Coen Station. Barry Port was an excellent Aboriginal assistant within the Coen Community and he worked with retired Cape York Senior Sergeant Jim Rankine and myself at Lockhart River, Aurukun, and other Aboriginal communities. Barry Port was a great communicator with Cape York Aboriginals and our QPS Staff and he also helped resolve plenty of police investigations”.

Mr Port was the final link in the 150-year partnership be-

tween Queensland police and Indigenous trackers, whose unique investigative bush skills were invaluable in a time before helicopters, mobile phones and GPS. In his final track, Mr Port was tasked with finding a man who bolted into the bush from the Coen courthouse after being sentenced. Three hours later, the man was back in the lock-up.

He retired in 2015, spending his time fishing and reflecting on the Coen River.

Mr Port passed away on March 4 from a heart condition.

He service will take place at Coen on Wednesday, April 8 and the burial will take place at Port Stewart on April 9.

AUSTRALIA’S last official Aboriginal police-tracker has passed away.

Barry Port was a living legend in his hometown of Coen, the town's public bar is even named after him.

The 77-year-old was the last Aboriginal tracker officially employed by an Australian police service. For 36 years he pursued drug dealers, escaped prisoners and cattle rustlers for Queensland Police.

“We’d go out looking for drugs, people camping in the bush who had set up big plantations and once we found it we'd destroy it all," Mr Coen told the ABC. “You could follow their footsteps through the scrub, they'd make a bit of a track to their

Pre-poll now open WITH the local government elections only weeks away the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has released more information on how and where voting can take place.

For people in remote areas who prefer to post in their votes for the upcoming local council elections. You can apply to receive a postal vote by applying online.

Voting must be completed by 6pm on Election Day. The ECQ must receive your completed ballot no later than 5pm Tuesday, 7 April 2020.

Postal vote applications close at 7pm Monday, 16 March 2020.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds then early voting commenced on Monday, March 16 until Friday March 27.

Boil water notice cancelled PROPERTIES in the Hastie, Carrington and Ravenshoe Road areas in Atherton are now connected to the Twelfth Avenue reservoirs. The water supplied to these properties complies with Queensland Health and Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and the boil water notice (BWN) has been cancelled.

The water is safe for all use including bathing, drinking, and preparing food, ice, baby formula and beverages.

Residents may experience pressure variations while TRC work to replace sections of the

water main to increase pressure in some areas. Residents need to continue to observe water restrictions and be conservative with water use.

Tablelands Regional Council will continue to monitor the water supply in accordance with Queensland Health’s requirements and thank the residents for their patience during this time.

Register with with the Early Warning Network for immediate information on boil water notices (and severe weather and other emergencies) via text and email.

Last meeting of TRC goes down to the wire

THURSDAY March 12 was the very last meeting of the current Tablelands Regional Council (TRC).

Mayor Joe Paronella said “it was one of our smallest agendas but one of our longest meetings” With two controversial items on the agenda, the meeting lasted for several hours.

The first item on the agenda was the material change of use for short term accommodation and reconfiguration of a lot.

The motion was passed in favour with 3 votes to 4, with

developers hoping to build backpacker accommodation at 43 Tinaroo Falls Dam road.

Councillor Kate Eden who voted against the motion believes that there are better places for the accommodation.

“The area is better used for low density residential. Short term accommodation by definition isn’t low density residential, this is just going to put a community into another community” “The area is a very strong family residential area and I believe that the development

The returning officer for the Mareeba Shire is Suzanne Temple and the returning officer for the Tablelands Regional Council is Vittorio Falvo.

The ECQ is providing eligible voters, including those who identify as having an impairment, disability or a low level of literacy with access to telephone voting. Those eligible must register to cast a vote via telephone.

According to the TRC, there were 54 proper submissions made with only 2 in favour of the development “I looked at every one of those submissions and looked at their reasoning, what we need to do as a council is look at in in context.” Councillor Mellick said “We need to look at the needs of local industry and the amount of unregulated backpacker accommodation that has no regulations or rulings. At least this accommodation is in a controlled space with some strict conditions.”

The second item on the agenda was the linking of the Seven Sisters Cycleway Bike way.

According to Atherton Bicycle spokesperson Rex Hutchison “The Seven Sisters Cycleway is a trail that once connected will be approximately 170 kilometres long. At the moment only another 3.8 kilometres is needed to get the whole track joined” At the meeting Council officers did not support the Cycleway and Councillor Kate Eden said “The officer’s recommendation was not supported by the councillors and so I put forward an

alternative motion, which was voted for unanimously.”

“We also didn’t want to lock in any costs or feasibility studies before the next future council is voted in. If I’m voted back in after March 28 this is something I will strongly support. “Councillor Eden said.

A release from TRC summarising the decision said “provide in principle support for the Seven Sisters Cycleway and requested a report to be provided at a future Council meeting on how this project will be progressed and resourced.”

Councillor Eden said of the decision “We could have deferred the decision but we wanted to say we in principal support this, but to be fair to the next council we didn’t want to lock them into anything so it will be up to the next council to support this.”

Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick said both decisions were very hard “at the end of the day we had to make the best decisions we could with the information we had.

“If we had of deferred these decisions we would have been seen as passing the buck, then some other people think we made these decisions to rush them through at the last minute” “We are on a hiding no matter what we decided to do, so you’ve just got find in your heart what you think is the correct decision.”

Last days in the top job

ON Thursday March 12 the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) under the leadership of Mayor Joe Paronella sat for the very last time.

Mayor Paronella said that “it was “probably one of the shortest agendas but one of the longest meetings we’ve had.”

“It was a good meeting, it’s something I’m going to miss, our presentations and deputations were very good.”

Mayor Paronella was a Councillor for the Atherton shire from 2000 until 2008 and thought his time in council was done until he was approached to run for the top job in 2016.

“I was approached by some local business people and I felt that I had something to offer and a direction that we should be going.

“My wife and I planned on retiring 4 years ago, so this was never a long term career move and now in a few weeks my wife and I will finally be able to retire.

“When I came into council as Mayor, I always said I was only going to do one term. My reason

for running was to get the shire heading in the right direction after the effects of amalgamation and de amalgamation.”

One of the biggest criticisms from TRC ratepayers has been the rise of rates on the Tablelands something Mayor Paronella says is unavoidable.

“Nobody should ever be naive to think that rates won’t go up, rates will always go up because if a council doesn’t put rates up by at least CPI, you’re going to go backwards. It’s just like a business, there are costs involved; all things go up like wages, vehicles, fuel it all goes up.

“The costs of running council are always rising but we try to keep everything to a minimum.”

Sugar production down THE Queensland sugar industry is facing another challenging year in 2020 after suffering significant production declines and low prices during 2019.

Australian Sugar Milling Council (ASMC) data has revealed a worrying reduction in both cropping area and sugarcane yield across all regions in 2019, with recovery unlikely in 2020.

ASMC’s Director of Industry Affairs Jim Crane said the total Queensland sugarcane crop for 2019 was 28.4 million tonnes, down 6.7% from the 30.4 million tonnes achieved in 2018 and some six million tonnes less than the 2016 crop of 34.4 million tonnes (-17.4%).

“The crop area harvested was also down 12,000 hectares across the State’s sugar

regions last year,” Mr Crane said. (350,082ha in 2019 compared to 362,414ha in 2018*).

The figures also showed that the cane yield in terms of tonnes per hectare in 2019 was lower than the average result for the past eight years (2012-2018) across every Queensland sugarcane production region.* “While the lift in the global sugar price and recent widespread rain in most districts has certainly been welcome, in some areas the rain has come too late to deliver any marked improvement in crop tonnages for 2020.”

“Given this outlook, it is difficult to see sugar production levels in Queensland recovering in 2020,” Mr Crane said.

Covid19 affects on agriculture

COVID-19 (formally Corona Virus) is hurting tourism across Far North Queensland, but Queensland farmers are worried they may be next in the firing line when it comes to decreasing imports and exports.

Outlook projections for the New Year from Rabobank have highlighted a dramatic slowdown in China's consumer spending. “The coronavirus outbreak is already having a severe impact on China's food service and trade channels and this could become more serious and longer-lasting if the virus is not contained in the next six to eight weeks,” warned Rabobank's Chinese research team.

Rabobank also warned that “Rock lobster shipments to China have all but ceased, chilled meat shipments for food service are also at risk as many hot pot restaurants are closed, and cheese consumption for piz-

zas and other food service uses could be impacted," they said.

Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) CEO Dr Georgina Davis said it was too early to quantify the long-term implications that COVID-19 may have on the global economy generally, and Queensland agriculture specifically, as international travel and trade are further restricted.

“QFF and the Queensland Government is closely monitoring the effects of COVID-19 on Queensland’s agriculture sector, which is significantly exposed, including the potential impacts to the state’s food, fibre and foliage producers and exporters,” Dr Davis said.

“With Queensland’s quality agricultural produce being successfully exported to a wide range of countries, most significantly Japan and India, our industries including horticulture,

dairy, grain, pulses and meat may also see adverse effects as a result of the disease. We are also seeing a downturn in visitor numbers through our agritourism venues and some reduced domestic demand as the tourism and restaurant industries suffer.”

“In the meantime, QFF strongly recommends that farms and processing facilities create a business continuity plan to address the issues that may impact their businesses, paying particular attention to supply chains and animal welfare.”

“We also ask that farmers don’t panic buy. We appreciate that some chemicals are manufactured in China and demand for fertilisers and herbicides is rising based on increasing confidence and plantings stimulated by the widespread rain.

There are enough products to go around as long as farmers only purchase what they need and do

not stockpile, more products are on-route and local manufacturing is ramping up.”

President of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the FNQ Growers Joe Moro also agrees that it’s too early to tell what impact Covid-19 may have on Tablelands farmers.

“At this stage there have been no export implications but there may be some labour supply issues, as less backpackers come to Australia to work and travel” he said.

“Most local fruit that was going to be exported has already been exported.

“Covid-19 will certainly have an impact but as we can’t tell how long this is going to last, it’s hard to predict the long term effects on growers.”

MORE than 80 locals turned out to hear what aspiring Mareeba Shire councillors will do for them if elected at this month’s local government elections.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said the turnout at last Thursday’s business lunch sent a clear message to the candidates that the 2020 ballot mattered to the Mareeba business community.

Each candidate presented

their vision for the shire, and outlined how they intend to consult with the chamber to ensure issues affecting businesses are heard and actioned.

“The business world is incredibly challenging, and while there are a number of external factors out of the direct control of businesses, its imperative that we have elected council representatives that are willing to work with us,” Mr Moro said.

“It’s also important that those same elected representatives have a clear vision for Mareeba Shire – one that we as a chamber can share and work collaboratively to achieve.

“As a chamber we have done an incredible amount of work promoting the shire as a vibrant retail, trade supply and processional service commercial centre. “We don’t want to risk losing that momentum.”

speak to constituents about their plan for the future of the Tablelands Regional Council.

servancy (AQC) has been surveying spotted-tail quolls (Dasyurus maculatus gracilis) in North Queensland since 2013 and Alberto says they are the rarest of all the quolls.

“Back in 2001 it was estimated that there were about 540 spotted tail quolls left in the wild, now we would be lucky to have 350 animals left in the wild.”

The Australian Department of the Environment and Heritage considers the spotted tailed quoll as endangered.

“This species is vulnerable to decline because it requires certain climates and habitats; it tends to live in low densities, it is likely to compete with intro-

duced predators and requires lots of space, and does not live very long.”

The spotted tailed quoll typically lives in the wet tropics areas between Cooktown and Townsville.

The presentation is taking place on Thursday, April 2 at 7:30pm at the Malanda Hotel.

Wiley Weed eradication Unpaid rates warning RECENT rain has seen the growth of the Parthenium weed (pictured) in several new sites across the Mareeba shire Parthenium is an invasive weed that has the ability to take over pasture lands, orchards and lifestyle blocks.

It can also transmit adverse health effects to humans, domestic pets and animals via contact with sap and pollens from the plant. Contact can cause dermatitis, asthma and hay fever.

According to the Mareeba Shire council there are now 11 known active sites of Parthenium within the shire.

“The rain has seen germination of Parthenium on several new sites that have been located as a result of land protection property inspections.

RECENTLY Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) approved action on properties with an outstanding rate debt of three years or more with no payment resolution, which may be sold to recover outstanding costs.

A TRC spokesperson said “Our debt collection agency is now moving to the next stage of the debt collection process on the outstanding rates against these properties, “This may see the debt resolved, which means that there will be no need to proceed to sale.”

As of 31 January 2020, outstanding rates and charges owed to TRC was approximately $2

Million dollars of which approximately $314k related to debts that have been outstanding for five years or more.

According to the TRC website “Rates and charges described on a rates notice are due and payable by the due date, after which any outstanding amount becomes an overdue rate and compound interest of 9.83% per annum will accrue daily.”

Council added that “We are committed to assisting ratepayers to keep their rate debt manageable and we offer a range of flexible options for this.

“We are successful in resolving outstanding rates in the

majority of cases, however we also have an obligation to the broader community to manage overdue accounts and minimise future revenue risk.

“This next stage will formally identify our intention to sell to recover outstanding rates, which may in turn allow property owners to access funds through avenues such as superannuation and mortgage insurance.

“Often these options are not available until there is a notified intent to sale, and some property owners have let us know that they are waiting for us to take this next step to enable them to access those fund.”

MAREEBA Meals on Wheels has received a new walk in freezer valued at $24,257, courtesy of a Mount Emerald Community Benefit Fund.

The fund is available to notfor-profit groups, associations and clubs that make a positive difference to the local community, with $200,000 up for grabs every year.

The new single freezer sys-

tem was installed by Shane Thorpe Refrigeration and will replace their old, inefficient three freezer system.

Receiving the grant has allowed Meals on Wheels Mareeba to improve their storage capacity for frozen and fresh products as well as increasing their capacity to prepare and store donated fresh produce from the local community.

Meals on Wheels receives many donations of fresh foods from locals every year, and with the old equipment it had a much shorter lifespan.

Now with this new and improved freezer, Meals on Wheels can better preserve all of the fresh fruit and vegetables donated and put them to use.

Three Police vehicles damaged in Kuranda TABLELAND detectives have charged a man with seven offences after three police vehicles were allegedly rammed at Kuranda on Friday afternoon, March 13.

It’s alleged police attended a rural property at Oak Forest Road at around 3.10pm to speak with a man in relation to a large number of property offences committed between July 2019 and March 2020.

As one of the police vehicles pulled up and officers exited the car, a man ran to a stolen Toyota Landcruiser 4WD with large bullbar, which was parked nearby.

He revved the engine before driving it at the police vehicle, where one of the officers was standing next to an open door.

This office narrowly avoided being hit by the vehicle as it struck the door of the police car.

The 4WD then drove past the first police car, down the driveway before colliding head-on with a second police vehicle.

This collision forced the second police vehicle backwards and into the front of a third police car.

The 4WD then drove down a

steep embankment before striking a tree. The man remained in the car continuing to rev the engine and spinning the tyres.

Police continued to yell at the driver, directing him to exit the vehicle.

The man was arrested after officer’s smashed the side driver’s window to gain access to the vehicle, having to then physically restrain the man.

A 32-year-old Rossville man has been charged with seven offences including acts intended to prevent lawful arrest, serious assault police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and three counts of wilful damage.

He has been denied police bail and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on March 16.

Charges in relation to a number of property offences are expected.

No police officers sustained serious injuries and all three police vehicles were damaged.

The Toyota Landcruiser was stolen from a Tolga home on March 6.

Men, we have a problem

MARCH 9 was the funeral of Hannah Clarke and her three young children.

If you’ve been living on Mars for the past few weeks, you may have missed the fact that Hannah’s estranged husband Rowan Baxter doused his family in petrol and set them alight.

Last week a Melbourne Newspaper had to disable comments on their website and social media pages over their coverage of Women’s AFL due to “sexist and misogynistic comments from some of its readers.”

It was also the same week that a 14-year-old boy got off a bus in Sydney to stop a man beating his girlfriend in the street.

All of the above actions have one common denominator – Men. We can have all of the community service notices, celebrity ambassadors and white ribbons in the world, but it seems like the message isn’t getting through.

Men are violent towards women at an alarming rate.

Recently Actor Toby Francis posted about his own experience with domestic violence He wrote “My mate and I were driving one day, and I told him about an argument my wife and I had that ended up with me smashing something. He told me, in no uncertain terms, that what I was doing was violence that would one day turn into me pushing Lauren, which would one day turn into me punching Lauren, which would one day turn into me hitting our kids, and

it might stop there but maybe it wouldn’t.”

Toby’s mate called him out on his crap, and that’s what all good men need to start doing, or as the famous quote goes ”The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

Toby has now sought help for his anger and has urged other men in similar situations to do the same.

Good men don’t protect their mates; good men protect people who can’t stand up for themselves.

If you know your mate is hitting his partner and you do nothing, if you laugh at the joke ‘what do you tell a woman with two black eyes’, if you think that a female athlete in full flight is there purely for your sexual gratification, then you’re as bad as Hannah Clarke’s husband. Sure you didn’t light the match, but you make him and others like him believe that it’s the right thing to do.

Australian Police receive, on average, one call every two minutes regarding domestic violence. By the time you finish reading this piece; police will be on their way to another frightened female.

We don’t need white ribbons or community service announcements; we now need men to stand up to other men and call them out because the standard you walk past is the standard you accept.

Lockhart River Mayor speaks out after plane crash FIVE Cairns men died in a plane crash near Lockhart River on Queensland’s Cape York last Wednesday. Four QBuild workers and the 39-year-old pilot died when their twin-engine Cessna 404 Titan crashed into sand dunes, about 800 kilometres north of Cairns.

There are apparently quite a few people in Australia who are currently very worried about this new virus. And so they should be. But there is another issue that is sneaking under the radar that is going to have a far bigger impact on lives in Australia than this virus, which will eventually be brought under control.

The issue was forecast today when the Reserve Bank dropped the official interest rate. Now this will have a huge immediate impact on all people in this country, but what we must all consider very carefully, is what will happen if the next step is taken, and the interest rate is dropped below zero?

Very simply, if this happens, every person who has put money into a bank will start paying the bank to keep it there. There goes your savings.

This is real. Get ready.

Vote carefully on March 28

I ask the Mareeba Shire mayoral candidates if either supports the new traffic lights and heavy vehicle bypass and if they support the library being shifted a long way out of town to the bowls club.

While on development did the mayoral candidates support St Stephens school being built some years ago and do they support the proposed new highway route to Cairns which turns off the Kennedy highway at the ‘mad mile’?

Mareeba Shire will need a robust, new council and prodevelopment mayor minus any green credentials to stay ahead of the troubled times we are heading into. Coronavirus has panicked overseas visitors from coming to northern Queensland leaving us to fend for ourselves.

Businesses are being penalised for problems far from their own making and the northern economy is slowly grinding to a halt. Local government will have a big hand to play in fostering industrial development, home building, agriculture and road infrastructure.

Hopefully a new council will push state and federal governments into providing funds for the Mareeba heavy vehicle bypass and insist local contractors get some work. The intolerable situation of heavy vehicles carrying dangerous goods and other larger trucks travelling along Byrnes St is an accident waiting to happen.

The traffic lights under construction will be an added burden to the main and side street traffic flows in peak hours by banking up vehicles to Granite Ck on the northern end and to the fire station on the southern end every time they turn red.

Many of the vehicles will be carrying dangerous goods such as fuel, gas and fertiliser.

Voters should choose carefully on the March 28.

FNQ powerhouse

At the moment a lot of focus is elsewhere. Who can blame you? With a complete saturation of everything else in the media its quite easy to forget what we have at home.

The other day I was talking to a cane farmer and it reminded me about our local sugar mill and the technology advances they are doing not more than 30 mins from the Mareeba CBD. They have been thinking outside the square and have a green base load power source. Purely generated by waste from cane, Bagasse. Not only can they generate power but they can power nearly every home on the tablelands when its online and running.

Also another wonderful byproduct from cane is Ethanol.

Fuel for our cars as well. And dare I say it but I’m pretty sure they could even produce toilet paper. All of the world’s problems solved right here in FNQ. The Tableland Mill is a big employer in our Shire and we are lucky to reap the rewards especially if all of the above manages to hit the market soon.

So when we hear of the doom and gloom that is in our faces every day, remember that we are versatile we here in Far North Qld and if you give me your support then I’m sure the new Council will be enthusiastic and energised with having the next generation in the mix.

TRC inconsistency

TRC Council on Thursday, March 12 made a controversial planning decision to approve a backpackers near Atherton that is designed to accommodate up to 80 people. Cudas Backpackers is zoned Low Density Residential, joins the same residential zone along Gargans Lane and is more than 2km from Woolworths.

In June 2019 the council agenda contained a planning

report for Multiple Residential Units x3 in a Low-Density Residential Zone (LDR). The officers report recommended council to refuse this application on the basis that it was NOT consistent with the LDR zone. It relied on certain reasons including that the site was 900m from the main street commercial premises and that in planning terms, 400m is generally recognised as being a reasonable walking distance to the average person. Many other reasons were given to refuse the application on the grounds that it was not consistent with the LDR Zone.

How then can the same council officer, under the same planning instruments, present a report for a much larger Accommodation Facility in the LDR Zone and recommend it be approved?

The noted inconsistencies in planning officers’ reports, recommendations to council and councils’ decisions is extremely concerning. This provides no certainty for residents or developers and discourages investment in our region.

Councils decision to approve this development is inconsistent and it must be questioned internally if not also by appeal.

We have lost interest

After reading Phil Brandel’s opinion in last weeks Express, I can only say that I fully agree.

No doubt people have lost interest and that is why we get numbnuts in politics. Mr and Mrs Average are too busy in most cases just making ends meet to give a toss about who runs for election, state, federal and local. There are many issues out there that have not been addressed properly and continue on to become a drain on the constituents.

I have lived in Mareeba for 12 years now and despite hinting to one councillor, about having a visit from a councillor, I have not received a visit yet. Not even sure what division I am in.

I want to know if any of them have plans to scrap or change Australia Day or interfere with Anzac Day celebrations.

Plan for the future

Recently the Express entertained comments from MP Knuth and TRC Councillor Byrnes concerning the Tolga Scrub.

Mr. Knuth, quoting his experience, stated that the red flying foxes get comfortable, are lazy, will not move on, and are destroying the forest. All of this is not the case. However I am aware of some human occupations where most of this applies.

The forest at Tolga is experiencing temporary flying fox damage, as it has many many times before. Broken limbs are a traffic hazard risk and both council and the Transport Department need to be vigilant, this would apply to the whole forest, the canopy today is also closing above the highway.

Most of the damage to the forest is a result of human activity. We have been left with a remnant of it’s type , a small area with no opportunity to expand on it. It has the very busy Kennedy Highway running it’s length with a speed limit of 80k/ hr and the opportunity to overtake.

We’ve established an Industrial Estate beside it, it has a busy internal road, Beantree Road, two farm entries, Sims Road , a motel, Tolga residential and a park on it’s northern edge. There has also been cockatoo damage and I believe aerial spray damage prior to the Industrial Estate.

It is not a very safe place to drive in or to walk in, pedestrians have been killed. At night light reflection from the forest and oncoming traffic make it difficult to see walkers who should now be directed to the rail trail.

Consideration should be given to reducing the speed limit to 60kms/hr from Tolga to Atherton, it will add 25 seconds to your travel time.

Hopefully to reduce traffic flow in the forest council will ultimately provide an entry to the Estate via Manthey Road.

The entry from Beantree Road to the Highway is also a dangerous one and this would reduce the risk at this point.

In the 70s council decided to shoot the flying foxes and organized a group of shotgun shooters and they began . It was not about relocation. A group of concerned people then took a wounded flying fox to the council office and the Mayor gave them a week to disperse them.

They tried hard with a number of methods but they kept coming back as they have been, probably for hundreds of years.

The shooting would have continued until the Superintendent of the hospital advised them that they had created a health hazard with all the dead bats and dying bats.The shooting stopped.

I believe that in the future there will be many who will want to witness this mass gathering and movement of these fascinating animals.

What is needed now is for council to develop plan to see wise management of this forest and it’s inhabitants to ensure professional management for years to come and not operate on knee jerk reactions.

When I announced my candidacy I made a commitment to only two things. 1. That the greater collective good of residents (both current and future) be at the centre of all decision making and 2. That we treat all people the way that we like to be treated – “with respect”. I also stated that unhelpful politics and spin are unnecessary and a disservice to our community and future.

During this campaign I have declared that as Mayor I will be firmly focused on 4 pillars: 1. Lead an Effective, Efficient and Fair Council.

2. Champion Business & Industry.

3. Enable Connected, Creative and Active Communities 4. Be a Strong Voice for our Region.

I believe there remains much work to do in achieving efficiencies and effectiveness in Council; but it is critical that decisions be based on facts and not on, what to my mind, are disingenuous, ill-informed misperceptions as is being purported by some.

The current Council has delivered record Capital Works Programs sometimes in the order of double the previous Council, whilst taking almost $7M less from ratepayers pockets than what the previous Council projected for the same period. Although we must continue to place downward pressure on our rate rises, our forward budgeted projections are

presently under 3% pa – not the double figures projected by the previous Council.

Yes there is absolutely much more to be done. But facts are facts.

Your vote will decide the Community Leaders and, in turn, the tone and focus of our region for the next 4 years; and you have a real choice. If you want experienced, positive, forward thinking, human centred leadership, I invite you to support me. But be aware I need the support of fellow Councillors who demonstrate the same intent.

TRC beneficial enterprise lemon

IN May 2018 TRC resolved to form a Beneficial Enterprise known as TRCE. It was on the Agenda and discussed at 12 March 2019 Council meeting.

Cr Byrnes asked prudent questions which were answered with detail or vagary as it is the board of TRCE that needs to account to the Council and not Council Officers. The board of TRCE had a lot of changes in the less than 2 years it has operated, the most recent being the resignation of CEO which was a surprise to councillors.

To date $593,672 or ratepayers money has been spent with no return. Council budgeted on $1m income from year one of TRCE which has since been rightly removed from the Councils budgets.

TRCE has focused on three key projects. Two of these are work already done or progressing without TRCE. The other is an Agroforestry Project with the aim of generating income from carbon farming. Nearly 2 years and not a single tree has been planted. The business case for carbon farming is nothing new and that information and opportunity is available without TRCE. It is very hard to find a Beneficial Enterprise in any council that is beneficial. Most create enormous debt obligations on ratepayers while councillors and directors have no responsibility or accountability whatsoever under this structure.

The new council will have to make a very well-informed judgement on the future merit of this lemon looking thing called TRCE. No commercial business invests $500k without real prospects of a meaningful return and nor should council.

Hunters hunger hasn’t been sated 2020 St Stephen’s Catholic College swimming carnival age champions.

College swimmers smash records

THE 2020 St Stephen’s Catholic College swimming carnival was held on February 25, and saw many long standing records broken by this year’s swimmers.

Chloe Donovan, Ned Donovan, Sara Donavan and Marlon Bellero all broke records set by the previous swimmers over the years.

Ned Donovan broke the 15

year old boys 50m Backstroke, Breaststroke Freestyle and Butterfly records, beating the old Butterfly record by 1.14 seconds.

Sara Donovan broke the open girls 50m Breaststroke by 1.44 seconds, while her younger sister Chloe broke the 13 year old Butterfly and Breaststroke records, beating the old Breast-

stroke record by a whopping 3.14 seconds.

Marlon Bellero broke the 13 year old boys 50m Freestyle and Butterfly records, beating the old butterfly record by 1 second.

Deacon house also smashed the 15 year old boys 4 x 50m Relay by a massive 17.51 seconds and helped them to win the swimming carnival.

IN a nail biting finish, Atherton cricketer Amy Hunter witnessed her Queensland representative team take home the trophy at the recent U/15 National Championships, winning against NSW Metro.

Amy’s team managed to beat Metro in the final over of the game and solidify their position at the top of the podium.

Even though she didn’t take any wickets as one of their strike fast bowlers Amy kept the runs down and strangled the NSW batsman putting them under pressure.

In the previous rounds against Tasmania and Victoria Amy performed exceptionally and took a total of 7 wickets for 25 runs overall.

Amy’s mother was very proud of her daughter and is glad to see all her hard work paying off.

“I am extremely proud to see her doing well as any parent would,” she said.

“To see her getting these sorts of results is amazing.

“She is incredibly self-motivated and she’s always trying to improve her game, she lives and breathes cricket.”

With a taste of a National Championship Amy’s hunger has only grown larger as she pushes herself to improve and stamp her name in the cricketing world.

“After experiencing this Championship I realise that I really want to up my game,” Amy

AN Atherton Rooster Ladies tackle rugby league team is in the works after good numbers at their recent development morning on Saturday, March 7.

15 ladies showed up to the development morning hosted by the Atherton Roosters senior men’s side, the ladies were taught and shown the basics of tackle rugby league and some of

the finer details of the sport.

The Roosters currently have 20 ladies in their side and are chasing 5 more to put their hands up and represent Atherton in the CDRL ladies division.

Atherton Roosters senior coach Graham Clark Snr is pushing to get the team off the ground.

“It’s important to us because

if we don’t get it running now when will we?” he said.

Graham believes that solid coaching is needed to help provide the ladies with a good foundation which they can build off with experience in games.

“There are currently about 7 ladies team in the CDRL ladies tackle comp, and I know the one in Innisfail has a good coach; an ex player,” he said.

“If we’ve got any pride in our town we have to build a quality side to represent us on the ground.”

The ladies side will be playing their first trial match against the Edmonton Storm this Saturday at Mungali Creek Stadium at 4.30pm.

Bulls players to represent Peninsula

SEVEN players from the Mareeba United football Club have been selected in respective Peninsula representative teams.

Aiden Wolfe and Jon Gambino have been selected for the under sixteen side, while Damian Avolio, Jack Centofanti, Dean Alterio and Milan Quintieri have been chosen for the open men’s and Jane Close will place in the ladies open division.

Mareeba’s Wyatt Milgate will be competing in the Fort Worth Stockyards Championship Rodeo on March 27-28 going up against some of the best bulls and bullriders in the world.

Wyatt set to wrestle with the best bulls in the world

MAREEBA’S Wyatt Milgate will be packing his bags and heading to America to compete against the best bull riders in the world in the Fort Worth Stockyards Championship Rodeo.

The 19 year old won the 2019 Great Northern Bull Riding Series as a fresh 18 year old and along with his golden buckle was also gifted an all-expenses paid trip to compete in America.

He will be going up against some of the best bull riders in the world in this two day competition on March 27-28, as he takes a step closer to his goal of being the number one bull rider in the world.

Kyle Milgate, Wyatt’s father has seen his son grow from rid-

ing calves to riding some of the rankest bulls in Australia.

“I’m very proud of his achievements,” he said.

“It will be a really good experience and he will take what he learns over there and bring it back to up his game.

“He really deserves this he has been training relentlessly and been on the back of a bull since he was five.”

He began his bull riding journey at just five years old where he rode calves, he then moved up to steers, junior bulls, novice bulls and eventually open bulls which he rode to win the Great Northern Bull Riding Series in October last year.

Wyatt is looking forward to

competing in America and the experiences it will bring.

“It’s a surreal feeling to be able to go over to America and compete,” he said.

“This experience will really up my game and open a lot of doors for me.

“This championship is a step in the right direction and will get my name out there in America.”

One of the Great Northern Bull Riding Series Bullfighters Nathan Brown will also be going with Wyatt to the championship when they leave on Thursday, March 26.

Wyatt will be back in time to defend his title in the Great Northern Bull Riding Series this April.

Archery stalwart retires THE Tableland Company of Archers will be saying their farewells to stalwart secretary and long-time archer Terrinette (Terri) Neilson.

Terri has been with the Tableland Company of Archers (TCA) since 1984 where she attended the annual general meeting and

was elected as their publicity officer.

Other positions Terri has held over the years include; The North Queensland Archery Association (NQAA) Recorder, as well as the junior development officer for the NQAA. In 1997 Terri became the

Archery Australia Junior Director where she was responsible for junior archery development Australia wide.

With her significant contributions to Archery not only in her local community but across Australia, Terri was awarded the Sports Administrator of the Year award at the 2020 Australia day awards in February.

Terri is now retiring and another secretary is being chosen among the company’s archers, the new secretary will have less responsibility than Terri with her many jobs and roles being handed out amongst the archers.

All through this time in the admin side of the archery world, Terri was also a prolific archer herself, competing in multiple State, National and Master Tournaments around Australia.

TCA Treasurer and Badge Officer Helen Bochow spoke glowingly about Terri and her contributions to TCA. “She has done a fantastic job over the years,” she said.

“Terri has taken on so many more jobs than just being a secretary.

“We are really going to miss her and all she does for the club.”

With Terri’s expertise and passion for archery all of the

clubs shoots and tournaments have run smoothly for years.

“She is eternally patient with all of our questions and she never gets cranky,” Helen said.

“She smooths the way and makes everything so easy so all we have to do is shoot arrows.

“She is one in a million.”

Terri has looked back on her experiences and memories within the TCA and will “cherish these memories forever.”

“I really have enjoyed my time with the TCA,” she said.

“There was a lot of stress involved especially when I was dealing with Archery Australia on top of my normal duties.

“There were some good times and there were some bad times.”

Terri will still hold her position of a national judge for Archery Australia after stepping down as the TCA secretary.

A farewell dinner is being held for Terri to celebrate her achievements and time with the club at the Mareeba leagues Club on Saturday, April 4.

A raffle will also be available to help the TCA rebuild their field course which was destroyed by the fires in late 2019.

Terrinette Neilson will be retiring from her duties as secretary for the Tablelands Company of Archers with a farewell dinner being held in her honour.

The Atherton Roosters and the Mareeba Gladiators have played a 22 all draw in their rugby league first grade preseason trial on Saturday night at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

It was another tough 80 minute local derby and a crowd pleaser through to the final siren. After leading 1812 at the break, the Roosters were first to score again in the second stanza to push further ahead 22-12.

But it was the Gladiators who came home the better crossing for two tries in the dying stages to lock up the score. In the reserve grade, the Roosters started their year off with commanding 24-6 win over Mareeba. The under 18 match was a tight contest but in the end it was the Roosters who came away 24-16 winners over the Gladiators.

Seconds smash through T20 MAREEBA cricket had another weekend of mixed results with the second’s side winning their T20 game, while thirds fell short of another victory.

Seconds went up against Rovers at home last Sunday for a T20 match; Rovers won the toss and decided to bat first putting up 9/130 after their 20 overs.

Seconds got off to a shaky start with one of their openers falling for a golden duck and the next batsman didn’t hang around long either.

Brett Stallan and Brendan Falvo eased the shaking Mareeba lineup and helped steered them towards a victory.

Thirds didn’t have as much luck, going down to United in their match on Saturday.

Mareeba won the toss and batted first posting up 106 runs off 32.1 overs.

United looked solid in their run chase with their first wicket falling after drinks, they chased the total down with ease ending up at 4/107 off 32.1 overs.

TO celebrate the Mareeba Gladiators 40th anniversary, the Mareeba Old Players and Supporters (MOPS) are hosting an anniversary dinner and reunion on July 3, 2020.

Held on the first weekend of July the reunion will see past gladiator’s players and coaches attending along with old Easts and Wests players and coaches as well.

The night will look back on 40 years of the Gladiators history with recaps from previous players and coaches and guest speakers are lined up for the night.

There will be recognition of

teams through the reunion and a remembrance of the multiple milestones through the Gladiators history.

The objective of the reunion on the Friday night is to honour the early Gladiator players, in particular the players that first entered into the Cairns District Rugby League competition in 1980.

One such memorable moment was the 1980 grand final against the Kangaroos which will be re-lived by the Gladiators present A grade side on Saturday night when they go up against the new Roos at Davies Park on July 4.
