ARTIE Academy celebrates consistent attendance BY RHYS THOMAS

JOURNALIST Joseph Barclay

CADET JOURNALIST Rhys Thomas

MAREEBA State High School (MSHS) recognised some standout Indigenous students last Tuesday at the opening of the Term 3 ARTIE Academy. The Achieving Results through Indigenous Education Academy assists in ‘Closing the Gap’ in education for Indigenous students. The program provides Abo-

riginal and Torres Strait Islander students attending Queensland schools the opportunity to earn rewards for outstanding attendance. Five students were awarded for breaking their attendance goal of 90% by achieving 100% attendance. MSHS Principal Scott Whybird believes this program is a stepping stone to helping students meet their goals.

“If we don’t get the kids to school, they’re not going to learn for a start,” he said “Quite often you have kids who don’t want to come to school. “What this program does is give them that little bit of a push, we all need that hook, and what the ARTIE program does is it gives them the incentive to come to school. “And that’s a really important thing because let’s be honest; no

one likes coming to school so this programs gets them to want to come to school.” Although the ARTIE Academy focuses on attendance Mr Whybird believes that this program along with the schools ROLSTAR program help students academically. “The links with behaviour is an important thing too, it’s great to come to school but you’ve also got to behave,” he said.

“There has been a slight increase in attendance, but this sort of program is a slow process. “The ARTIE program marries well within the already implemented ROLSTAR program which rewards students for good behaviour and work. “It’s all in the student’s court, they’ll all want to go to the fun day but they can’t, they don’t meet the attendance goals.”

MAREEBA Shire Council has a zero tolerance for abuse and aggression shown towards its staff, volunteers and contractors. “Council values its employees, volunteers and contractors and I will not tolerate any form of violent, threatening or aggressive behaviour towards them,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said.

“From our staff behind the front counter to those maintaining our parks and gardens, they are all working for the community and deserve to be treated with respect and common courtesy.” This reminder comes after a ratepayer hurled abuse at a contractor at one of Council’s transfer stations over a dispute with the Queensland waste

levy charge. “The police were notified of this incident and it is a timely reminder that this kind of behaviour is not acceptable,” Cr Gilmore said. The new waste levy which came into effect earlier this month was imposed by the Queensland Government and Council must pay the levy back to the State.

“While it can be easy to take your frustration out on the person standing at the gate, behind the counter or over the phone – these people are not the decision-makers,” Cr Gilmore said. “If you have a complaint or concern about a Councilrelated issue I welcome you to contact Council directly.” If a Council employee,

volunteer or contractor encounters any form of violent, threatening or aggressive behaviour Council will report this behaviour to the police for action. “The safety, health and wellbeing of our employees, volunteers and contractors is paramount and any form of abuse will not be tolerated,” Cr Gilmore concluded.

Outrage as taxpayers foot office relocation THE first day of estimates in the Queensland Parliament has revealed taxpayers will be required to fork out $71,000 for the fit-out of Member for Cook Cynthia Lui’s new office space in Cairns. Ms Lui’s decision to move her electoral office from Mareeba to Cairns saw significant backlash when it was announced in December of last year, and the discontent will only continue to intensify amongst Mareeba residents as they will be hit in the hip pocket as a result of the relocation. Liberal National Party Manager of Opposition Business Jarrod Bleijie said the Labor MP is betraying her constituents by moving from Mareeba to Cairns, which sits outside her electorate of Cook. “Cynthia Lui is turning her back on the people of Cook and to make matters worse taxpayers will foot the bill,” Mr Bleijie said. “Speaker Curtis Pitt approved her request to relocate the office, around March last year. “The cost of the fit-out is around $70,000, while the yearly rent bill will skyrocket to more than $71,000 per year.” Mr Bleijie said her new digs

aren’t in the Cook electorate, the office is bigger, the rent is double and it’s closer to her home. “The people of Cook deserve better,” he said. “They deserve a local member who actually works hard in the electorate. “This is more Labor waste. “Cynthia Lui has quickly adapted to life as a Labor MP by following the lead of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and wasting taxpayers’ money. “You can’t trust Labor.” The Express has spoken with Ms Lui on multiple occasions as it relates to the office move, and she has remained adamant that this is the right move for the electorate. “I acknowledge the view that Cairns is not in the Cook electorate, it is however, the most central location for the large number of constituents who live in the Cook electorate,” Ms Lui said in a press release in December, 2018. “The Cook electorate covers almost 290,000km2 of FNQ and the best way to cover that vast area is from Cairns, the transport hub for FNQ. A Cairns office means I can meet with more locals more often. “I have taken into consideration the barriers that restrict peo-

McCarthy quells concerns Contractor for Atherton over financial status Hospital announced

CONSTRUCTION is set to start on the $70 million Atherton Hospital Redevelopment in Far North Queensland after FK Gardner & Sons won the tender for the principal contractor. The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service’s Executive Director Rural and Remote Services, Gabrielle Honeywood, said this is another significant milestone for the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment project. “I am delighted to announce the principal contractor for this regional development, which has been highly anticipated by the Atherton Tablelands community,” she said. “The Atherton Hospital Redevelopment will provide a new purpose-built Clinical Services Building, a new Community, Allied and Mental Health Building, new Engineering Services Buildings, re-location of the helipad, onsite carparking works, internal road

upgrades and external infrastructure upgrades. “FK Gardner & Sons has had several years’ experience in delivering projects of this scale and complexity and will be bringing a highly qualified team together to start work first on the Community, Allied and Mental Health Building on Jack Street. “I understand how important the redevelopment is to the Atherton community and how much everyone is looking forward to seeing works start,” she said. The principal contractor will be working together with the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service being supported by the Department of Health Queensland, Peddle Thorp (Principal Consultants), WT Partnership (Quantity Surveyors) and Capital Insight as Project Manager. Construction will begin next month and the project is expected to be completed mid-2022.

Chairman of the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club Managing Committee Ray McCarthy is disappointed following reports that the club is experiencing financial difficulty.

CHAIRMAN of the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club Managing Committee Ray McCarthy has refuted claims that the long-standing club is in financial trouble. “There has been misinformation going around town and from certain news outlets that the bowls club are experiencing financial difficulties which simply isn’t true,” Mr McCarthy said. “We’re well and truly viable,

and what we’re doing with this development is planning five years down the track and in doing so ensuring that we secure our long-term future.” Mr McCarthy said the project will not only provide greater security moving forward, it will also deliver superior facilities than what is currently in place on Anzac Avenue. “There are many members who have spent years with the club and have plenty of equity

citement with the development’s proceedings. “We will start the refurbishments on the toilet facilities on Monday (July 29, 2019),” he said. “In addition, we’re busy getting the plans drawn for the main building and we’re about to sign the contracts for the artificial green and overhead shade cover. “Exciting times are ahead for the club and I’m really enjoying being a part of it.”

spending, plan for critical infrastructure or attract investment to the region. “Last year the Ginger and Turmeric Cooperative Project was a worthy recipient of $5000. “They investigated the viability of a Tablelands-based farmers’ cooperative for the production of ginger and turmeric. “Investigations are ongoing but initial indications show a high number of interested farmers. “Applications for the fund opened on Monday and close on Friday, November 2, so get thinking and applying,” said Mayor Paronella.

Lumsden to light up Dimbulah THE Dimbulah Memorial Hall will host one of the country’s most respected country artists this Saturday as multi-award winning artist Fanny Lumsden will perform as part of her Country Halls Tour. Dimbulah will be one of 34 shows that Fanny will be headlining over the next seven months as part of the tour, and it provides community members an opportunity to see top-class live original music. It’s also a chance to inject some money back into the community, with funds raised going back into the Dimbulah Memorial Hall. For those who don’t know too much about Fanny, she boasts an impressive resume which includes an extensive list of accomplishments which spans

years. Some of her most notable achievements include two ARIA nominations, two CMAA Golden Guitar Awards, a CMC Award and the AIR Best Independent Album of 2018 for her second record Real Class Act; of which debuted at number one on the Country ARIA charts in 2017 – making it the only independent to do so that year. Fanny, who started the Country Halls Tour in 2012, said her inspiration was one borne out of giving back to the community. “There was never a big business plan attached – I initially began the Country Halls Tour to raise some money for BLAZEAID, an organisation building fences for farmers after significant flood events,” she said.

“Also, it was a chance to give back to the community, I am from Western New South Wales originally and I wanted to bring live music to places that don’t traditionally get the chance to hear it.” Fanny said she didn’t expect the Country Halls Tour to turn into the overwhelming success it is today. “I thought it would be a oneoff event – I had no idea it would turn into a career defining tour for me,” she said. “I’m especially excited to come back to Far North Queensland and Dimbulah specifically, I have performed there twice before and there’s definitely a passion for country music in that part of the country.” Fanny described her music as a version of country folk.

Mount Emerald Wind Farm Community Open Day Saturday 10 August

Esteemed country music artist Fanny Lumsden will grace the Dimulah Memorial Hall stage this Saturday night.

“While it will be a great night for country music enthusiasts, I encourage people of all music tastes to come down for a familyfriendly and fun show,” she said.

“We have two local acts (Jacynta'lee and sister duo Jolene and Justene Ross) preceding my performance so I’m really excited to see how they perform in

front of their friends and family.” For those interested in attending on Saturday, tickets can be purchased at www.countryhallstour.com

Senior Constable Aleda Day with Manager of Road Safety NQ Rachel Coulson at the Street Smart information stall last Thursday at Davies Park.

BY RHYS THOMAS THE Department of Transport and Main Roads inspectors teamed up with the Mareeba police last Thursday to help inform visiting nomads of their caravans and appropriate weight distribution. Scales are used to weigh their vehicles at axel points and used this information to accurately calculate the weight of the vehicle. From these calculations drivers were informed weather their weight distribution was safe and if not these concerns needed to be addressed. Manager for Road Safety North Queensland Rachel Coul-

son says that this process not only helps with souvenir collection but also road safety. “It’s a completely free service, no enforcement or fines will be issued,” she said. “It’s all about educating and raising people awareness about road safety. “Letting the drivers know if their vehicle is safe in case of any unexpected road incidents. Ms Coulson also expressed concern to local traffic with the heavy influx of nomads “With more people on the road the likelihood of there being more incidents involving travellers is going to increase,” she said. “That’s why activities like

this are really important because it helps keep everyone safe. “We have lots of brochures and information available here.” Ms Coulson would like to advise locals to “be patient” with the nomads. “They’re traveling in an area where they might not be familiar with,” she said. “Give them some courtesy and respect them as visitors to our home and to share information regarding poor roads and general information about the area.” For more information on road safety visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads website at www.tmr.qld.gov.au

Mareeba Military Muster nears Cassowaries winners in funding to boost rainforest resilience THE Tablelands’ Mabi forest and cassowaries are winners in a new $1.9 million project to increase rainforest resilience in the Wet Tropics region. Cassowaries and the habitats they live in – from Mabi forests to littoral rainforests - are under the spotlight in a four-year ‘Building Rainforest Resilience’ project which will include revegetation work, a landholder incentives program, community grants and weed management. The project is supported by Terrain NRM through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. Terrain NRM’s Tony O’Malley said Mabi forests and littoral rainforests were less well-known than the endangered southern cassowary - but both were listed nationally as critically endangered. “We will be working with cassowary, Mabi and littoral rainforest recovery groups, with Traditional Owners, landholders and the wider community to get the best possible multi-species outcomes from this project,’’ he said. “We will also be establishing a Rainforest Recovery Network

to help with the initiative.” Mabi forest is a type of rainforest that only occurs on North Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands. Just four per cent of the original forest remains, with weeds undermining many areas. Littoral rainforest is rainforest growing right on the coast. It faces pressure from both directions through coastal development and extreme weather events. Mr O’Malley said the project would help to reduce threats to these rainforest species and ecological communities by improving their condition and extent in priority areas through revegetation, weed management and habitat protection, and by finding solutions to cassowary deaths and injuries on roads. He said Terrain NRM was also working with Cape York NRM so that together they could maximise benefits for cassowaries and littoral rainforest in Far North Queensland. For information about the Building Rainforest Resilience Project, contact Terrain NRM’s Tony O’Malley on 0437 728 190 or email tony.omalley@terrain.org.au

FOR those clambering for the opportunity to commemorate the Tablelands’ World War II history, you can do so on Saturday August 9-11 as the Mareeba Turf Club will play host to the Mareeba Military Muster. This year’s theme is “The Year of the Military Uniform”, and those wishing to attend are encouraged to bring military items to showcase, sell, swap and display such as military vehicles, equipment and anything else military related. All proceeds raised from the event goes towards ensuring the longevity of the Mareeba Military Muster and the preservation of World War II history here on the Tablelands and right across the country. The first day of the Military Muster (Friday), of which isn’t open to the public, will allow attendees to set up for the three-day event and enjoy a barbecue in the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday’s itinerary will see static displays including military vehicles, radios, uniforms and assorted military items. Both Saturday and Sunday are public open days, with Saturday’s proceedings running from 8am-5pm, of which will include entertainment - while Sunday is from 8am-1pm. The Muster Bar and canteen will also be available over the weekend. Mareeba Military Muster organiser Michael Musumeci said he has been pleased with

how preparations have been going thus far and is confident of a strong crowd in 2019. “Preparations have been excellent,” he said. “We have been able to attract some very different and never seen before in Mareeba military vehicles that played vital roles within Far North Queensland and Pacific campaigns during World War II. “As it relates to the numbers we expect at the muster, we have received a positive response from the community

and hopefully that means we can draw a good showing for our 11th anniversary.” Mr Musumeci said the Mareeba Military Muster provides attendees with the opportunity to recognise our serving veterans along with those Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II and in other campaigns throughout the world. “It’s a chance to reflect and say thank you and help ensure future generations preserve our nation’s extensive and rich

military history,” he said. Mr Musumeci said it’s a cheap, family event which caters to people of all ages. For those interested in booking a display table, it costs $10 and can be booked up until the day of the event. However, interested participants are kindly asked to book display tables prior to the event. Members of the public are encouraged to make a donation at the gate as their entry fee.

The countdown is on for the 2019 Mareeba Multicultural Festival.

THE Mareeba Multicultural Festival is one of the most highly-anticipated events on the region’s calendar every year, and with it now being less than a month away, preparations are now well and truly in full swing. The festival is a chance for community members to get together and celebrate the wonderful diversity that exists within the region all while promoting cultural understanding and mutual respect. That common ground is highlighted at the festival

through music and food, with hundreds of performers from approximately 20 different ethnic groups and 15 religious faiths, to go along with more than 20 stalls made up of a variety of cuisines. First-time Mareeba Multicultural Festival President Jennifer Murat, who took over the role from long-time President Giuliano Cordenos, said preparations for this year’s event have been going smoothly. “The organisation of the festival has been going really

well,” she said. “With it now being just a month away we are finalising bits and pieces to ensure everything is in place for August 31. “It’s been a lot of work for myself personally given it’s my first year as President, however I have really enjoyed it and the committee has been extremely helpful and hands on right throughout the planning process.” Ms Murat said she has received fantastic feedback from members in the community and that there’s a real buzz starting to build around town. “There are plenty of people who are really excited – there are a few stall holders who have come back to us who haven’t participated in a couple of years which is a great sign,” she said. “So we’re confident as a committee that there will be a strong crowd on hand in 2019.” Ms Murat said the most significant change to the Mareeba Multicultural Festival this year is that there are six major prizes. “People can buy a ticket into the raffle which will be drawn on the day of the festival,” she said. For those interested in attending, the Mareeba Multicultural Festival will take place on Saturday August 31 from 9:30am – 5pm and is free of charge. Bookings for stall holders are still available, however they are encouraged to express their interest as soon as possible as the program is very close to being finalised.

Brain Bee students return from Brisbane WHILE most students were kicking back these holidays, students from Mareeba State High School were hitting the books in preparation for the Queensland and Northern Territory finals of the Australian Brain Bee Challenge. Year 10 students Elmidin Mahmud, Lea Micieli and Dailin Joshua were among 119 young competitors from across Queensland and the Northern Territory who competed in Brisbane in a battle of neuroscience knowledge on July 17. Organised by the world-leading Queensland Brain Institute at The University of Queensland, the Australian Brain Bee Challenge motivates students to learn about the brain. While most adults would struggle to define terms like dopamine or basal ganglia, Brain Bee contestants are well versed in a range of topics related to intelligence, memory, emotions, stress, ageing, sleep and Alzheimer’s disease. The Australian Brain Bee Challenge is also designed to inspire students to consider undertaking careers in neuroscience research. Brain Bee Queensland coordinator Associate Professor Bruno van Swinderen said finalists had the opportunity to tour QBI’s research facilities and learn first-hand about the variety of research being done by students at QBI. “The state final brings together some of the brightest young minds we have in Queensland, who are exactly the ones we’ll be relying on to

become the next generation of scientists,” Associate Professor van Swinderen said. “Students took part in two rounds of live questioning to determine the Queensland Brain Bee champion, and were also included in various activities to educate them about neuroscience research. “Some of these students travelled from incredibly far away, including students from Darwin and Atherton, and for most of them, it was their first opportunity to see a working neuroscience laboratory. Unfortunately the Mareeba State High School team didn’t make it into the next round, however Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator Mrs Stefanie Prizmic was proud of the students and their efforts. “They did extremely well, Elmidin Mahmud got into the top 9 which is incredible,” she

said “The fact that our students made it into the top 6% of Queensland is a massive achievement. “Our students studied incredibly hard and I am so proud that they got to experience this.” Although the students who competed this year will be unable to compete next year Mrs Prizmic believes their experience will be “invaluable” to next year competitors. “Lea, Dailin and Elmidin won’t take part next year but I’m sure that their experience and wise words will be appreciated by our students entering next year,” she said. “They loved it! I loved it. We had a great time. “The students got to tour the Queensland brain institute and meet so many like-minded students from across the state.”

KurWorld and the Range Road

IN response to the Transport and Main Roads alleged rejection of the Kur-World development, we can say we told you so. From as early as 2000, the Myola Feasibility study was completed in great detail highlighting that any development in Myola cannot proceed unless there was a staged upgrade of the

Kuranda Range Road. This is backed up again in the Superseded Myola Planning Scheme of 2001, where any development must be aligned with a staged upgrading of the Kuranda Range Road and the FNQ2031 regional plan that states, ‘Myola is not considered necessary for urban development in the life of this regional plan.’ For Mark Lawson of KurWorld to say he was stunned at the TMR response is a bit rich and exhibits an absence of due-diligence. If Kur-World was a proposed world class eco-resort

it would NOT place an estimated additional 1,600 vehicle movements a day on the Kuranda Range Road. KurWorld is first and foremost a high-density housing subdivision with its associated traffic. The Kur-World EIS says the resort component will be in stage 3 sometime in the future after the land is carved into tiny blocks. This is exactly what TMR are opposed to as highlighted in reports going back nearly 20 years ago. Steven Nowakowski President Kur-Alert Inc

RACQ welcomed today’s Parliamentary Committee investigation into claim farming, a practice it said was a scourge on Queensland’s Compulsory Third Party (CTP) scheme with crooked lawyers and organised crime driving thousands of unnecessary claims, pushing up the costs for drivers. Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) figures indicated there had been an increase of up to 1700 claims a year, which added at least $10 to every motorist’s CTP bill. RACQ spokesperson Paul Turner said Queenslanders deserved access to a CTP system that covered them without opening the door to international criminals and unscrupulous lawyers. “We support these legislative changes which try to stop people being preyed upon by claim farmers, lawyers and

medical practitioners pushing people to lodge insurance claims. These innocent people may then be open to scrutiny by investigations,” Mr Turner said. “Recent research by MAIC shows almost 40 percent of people have received an unsolicited phone call from someone trying to get them to lodge a claim with the CTP scheme. “CTP is there for those who are truly injured and we need to make sure it isn’t overtaken by these sort of dodgy claims.” RACQ supported the current legislation of the Motor Accident Insurance bill but believed it did not go far enough. To tackle the cause, and not just the symptom, Mr Turner said Queensland needed more fundamental reforms, which included: 1. Defined benefits for minor injuries – To remove incentives for law firms to take these sorts of cases to court while still providing access to legal avenues for those who are seriously injured; 2. Transparency over legal and medical fees – Just as MAIC has full access to insurance company data, the same provisions must be made for the percentage taken by lawyers and medical practitioners on the final payout to a CTP claimant; 3. A ‘no fault’ scheme – The current CTP scheme only pays out to those who prove they had no fault in the incident. This is out of step with laws in other states and means thousands of Queenslanders are missing out on support for serious injuries from motor vehicle crashes.

RACQ unveils cheapest and dearest cars to own and run QUEENSLAND’S peak motoring body has revealed the cheapest and dearest cars to own and operate, and for the first time an electric vehicle has become attainable for motorists wanting to drive greener and not blow the budget. Queensland’s peak motoring body has revealed the cheapest and dearest cars to own and operate, and for the first time an electric vehicle has become attainable for motorists wanting to drive greener and not blow the budget. RACQ’s 2019 Vehicle Running Costs survey examined a record-breaking 141 popular vehicles – taking into account all expenses associated with normal private car ownership including loan interest, fuel, new tyres, servicing, insurance, government charges and depreciation. At just under $6,000 per year, the micro Mitsubishi Mirage ES manual hatch took out the cheapest car to own and operate in Queensland for the second year running, while the dearest non-electric model was the BMW X5 at $23,000 p/a. RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the dearest electric vehicle was the Tesla Model X 100D at $25,500 per

year, but there was finally a more affordable, energy efficient alternative available for those wanting an EV. “This year we were able to assess the Hyundai Ioniq which blew Tesla out of the water in terms of affordability costing less than half the price at just under $10,000 a year to keep on the road,” Mr Spalding said. “Drivers need to be aware the Hyundai Ioniq has a higher purchase price than other small cars, so they need to weigh up the depreciation and interest costs with the fact they won’t be paying as much for fuel and will save on servicing before they opt for this vehicle.” Mr Spalding said the report once again highlighted huge savings could be made each year if motorists either downsized or sought the cheapest in class. “Drivers can save a lot of money by making informed choices when buying a car,” he said. “If you swap a large vehicle for a small car, you could save thousands of dollars a year. You can also make considerable savings just by swapping from a prestige model to one of a similar class without the prestige badge.”

But to you who feat My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go out and grow fat like stall fed calves. 3. You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this,” says the Lord of hosts. 4. ‘Remember the Law of Moses, My servant, which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgements. 5. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 6. Local sailors soar to new heights Sister and brother sailing duo, Breanne and Travis Wadley, have been named Queensland’s junior sailors of the year QUEENSLAND'S newest Sailors were announced at the 2019 Australian Sailing State Awards gala dinner at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Brisbane on Saturday, July 20. The awards recognise outstanding performances and celebrate the sporting achievements of Queensland athletes. There certainly must be something in the water at Tinaroo because both the Male and Female Junior sailor of the Year awards went to the Wadley family. The Female Junior Sailor of the Year was awarded to 12 year old Breanne Wadley from Tinaroo Sailing Club following her stellar performances during the year and her contribution to the sport of sailing as a qualified assistant instructor.

Breanne said “It was amazing to see my name on the perpetual trophy with such other well-known sailors; including that of my older sister Kristen and also my brother Travis who have been past winners of the Simba trophy.” Breanne’s achievements recognised during the awards included; State Championship titles in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. International Championship titles in Spain and New Zealand, World Championship titles in Spain and New Zealand, and National Australian Championship. 14-year-old Travis Wadley was awarded the male Junior Sailor of the Year for a second year in a row. Travis said “It was such a great honour to be awarded the

perpetual trophy by Olympic Gold Medallist, Matthew Belcher.” Travis has had podium finishes at the World Championships in Spain and New Zealand, State Championship win in Queensland and an International Championship win in New Zealand. Travis is an assistant coach at the Club and also received the TRC Junior Sportster of the Year. He is now part of the RQYS Youth Squad and travels to Brisbane monthly to attend training. He recently won the male category at the Queensland Youth Week Regatta with eldest sister Kristen winning the female category and the event overall. Kristen is busy juggling her Queensland Academy of Sport commitments this year and Uni-

versity in Brisbane. Having both Wadley's standing on top of the podium at the regatta was pretty special for parents Roger and Annette Wadley. Travis is training hard for the Qld Youth Championships in September and NSW Youth Championships in October and Breanne is training for the Queensland State Titles in September. With other championships in Sydney and Melbourne before the end of the year, they have a busy travel schedule ahead of them. They are also gearing up for the Australian National Championships in Melbourne, with Travis in the Laser Class and Breanne competing in the Open Skiff class.

CHAMPIONS: Breanne Wadley (above) and brother Travis (below) were named the female and male junior sailors of the year at the recent Australian Sailing State Awards.

Ladies lock in fourth position after win THE Mareeba Bulls premier ladies collected all three points on Sunday as they played host to JCU Strikers at Lindsay Australia Stadium. Rommany Soley smacked in a blistering shot to take a 1-0 lead into the break. She then got her brace in the second half with Vicki Owokram curling in a sublime shot from distance to win the match 3-1. The Mareeba Bulls reserves had a tough day at the office and were unable to break down the JCU Strikers defence. The cellar dwellers, with just one win to their name so far this season which came in the first round against the Bulls, managed to pick up another point by holding the Bulls to a dour 0-0 draw and were unlucky not to come

away with a win. A furious Dennis Allen knows how important three points from this match were heading into the final stages of the season. The introduction of a number of premier players failed to make an impact as the result may have consequences in the final series. In other matches played on Sunday, the Fillies had a comfortable win against the Comets 8-2 while Luch Avolio’s youth side continue their upward trend winning comfortably 5-1. The coach however is still not satisfied and is demanding more from his players as they approach the finals at the end of September. The Bulls are at home this Saturday in all grades as they take on the Comets at Lindsay Australia Stadium.

Roosters winning ways continue Atherton Roosters forward Mai Mani.

THE Atherton Roosters have announced they are one of the better contenders in this years finals race following Saturday nights 26-16 win over Cairns Brothers at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium. After going into the game minus a few of their regular stars, the Roosters showed plen-

ty of grit as they were forced to play the second half with twelve men. Forward Lachlan Payne was sent off five minutes from the break and the Roosters were booked for an extra effort in the final session. After leading 14-4 at the break, the Roosters went onto

to produce a outstanding performance much to the delight of their local crowd. Brothers did get first points soon after the restart which closed the gap to 14-10 but the Roosters were soon back in control when Kobe Martin went over. Winger Pio Seci followed with a try soon after and the

Roosters were now well on top of their opposition. The Roosters under 18 were also involved in a high quality match and took the points over Brothers 36-30. Centre Darcy Gillespie starred with three tries while Keyarn Porter grabbed a double. In reserve grade, the Roosters were full of mistakes and went down to Brothers 2612. The Cairns District Rugby League premiership points tables after 16 games. First Grade – Mossman 22, Yarrabah 22, Innisfail 21, Atherton 18, Brothers 18, Suburbs 14, Kangaroos 13, Ivanhoes 13, Edmonton 10, Mareeba 8, Tully 1. Reserve Grade – Yarrabah 20, Innisfail 19, Atherton 17, Mossman 16, Brothers 16, Tully 16, Mareeba 14, Suburbs 14, Kangaroos 13, Edmonton 10, Ivanhoes 5. Under 18 – Ivanhoes 29, Brothers 24, Edmonton 22, Innisfail 21, Atherton 20 Yarrabah 14, Kangaroos 12, Suburbs 8, Mareeba 6, Tully 1, Mossman 1. This Sunday the Atherton Roosters play Edmonton Storm at Petersen Park.

Gladiators go down fighting

THE Mareeba Gladiators A grade side went down against Mossman on Saturday in a hard pitched battle. In the end, it was the Mossman Sharks who came away with a 36-4 win over the Gladiators. But Gladiators captain/

coach Trent Barnard was still happy with the boy’s spirit. “Unfortunately we couldn’t come away with a win,” he said. “We made a lot of mistakes in the field and against a top team like Mossman you can’t make those mistakes.

“I’m proud that they kept focus in the game and kept playing to the best of their abilities.” Training in the next couple of weeks will include battles against the Reserve grade team which will hopefully improve the Gladiator’s game sense and

awareness. The Reserve grade side had an epic win over Mossman 2218, with the win putting an end to the Sharks 14 home game winning streak. The Gladiators take on Ivanhoes this weekend in all grades.

Bragging rights up for grabs

GAME ON: Mareeba Gladiators’ Trent Barnard and Jayden Edwards with Ivanhoes players Rhy Young and Keelan White.

WHILE many of them are mates off the field, there will be no love lost when they cross the white lines this Sunday as the Mareeba Gladiators take on Ivanhoes at the Smithfield Sports Complex. When current Mareeba Glad-

iators captain Trent Barnard made the decision to play for the Gladiators this season, he brought with him a large contingent of promising and longserving Ivanhoes players – a move that is set to make this fix-

ture far more personal for both sides than any previously played in 2019. In addition to Barnard, the Gladiators were able to acquire the services of the supremely talented five-eighth Jayden Ed-

wards, up-and-coming backrower Brodie Welsh, elusive outside backs Mitchell Brim and Buddy Knight, and ever-reliable CDRL stalwarts Tai Hobbler and Ben Pye – all of whom have donned the Ivanhoes red, white and blue

at some point in the past two seasons. Barnard, who helped deliver Ivanhoes their first premiership since the early 90s in 2016, noted that it will be unusual running out on to the Smithfield Sports Complex in the Gladiator green and gold. “It will definitely be an odd feeling, especially being in the dressing shed down the back,” he said. “I played so many years here and I’m still really good mates with a lot of the boys in the Ivanhoes side, so this is a game I’d love to win and one I circled on the calendar at the start of year. “I’m sure I’ll be copping it from the crowd quite a bit - that is good though as I know it will be a great atmosphere and hopefully there’s a strong crowd on hand. “I’m really looking forward to it.” Gladiators five-eighth Jayden Edwards boasts arguably the best kicking game in the CDRL competition, and he would’ve surely been in Ivanhoes’ longterm plans before his decision to take his talents up the Kuranda Range. Edwards said he can’t wait to test himself against his old club. “I’m sure there’ll be plenty of head-hunting going on,” he laughed.

“I definitely think there’ll be a bit of extra feeling considering how many of the boys know each other, so it’s a game I’m really excited for. “There’s been a bit of talk in the lead-up to this game between the sides so for us ex-hoes boys it would be great to get bragging rights over our old team.” Ivanhoes outside back Rhy Young, who will be fresh off an extended stay on the sideline due to injury, said his side is looking for greater consistency in the remaining weeks of the regular season as they fight for a finals spot. “We’ve been up and down all year, so it’ll be good to get a few wins on the trot and hopefully Mareeba will be one of them,” he said. “Mareeba in particular is a game I can’t wait to be a part of as going up against the likes of Jayden and Barny (Barnard) should be good fun. “They are their marquee players so we’ll be looking to shut them down early and if we’re able to do that it will go a long way in helping us come away with the win.” For those interested in watching this new-found CDRL rivalry, the Mareeba Gladiators and Ivanhoes A-Grade fixture will kick off at 3pm this Sunday at the Smithfield Sports Complex.
