The festive season has well and truly arrived! A sea of red and green flooded Mareeba Turf Club on Sunday night as Christmas cheer and community spirit took over at the annual Carols by Candlelight. Families sang together in the spirit of Christmas as they were entertained by performers singing all the Christmas favourites. The night also featured a special visit from Santa and his elves, with the kids treated to lollies as they went on their merry way.

3000 reasons to cheer for Lindsay

He might be turning 70 this week, but there is no slowing down for Lindsay Jue Sue who last week completed his 3000th climb of Mt Baldy.

1017m above sea level, the mountain became part of Mr Jue Sue’s daily work out eight years ago in a bid to lose weight after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“When I went to see my specialist he said well I wouldn’t worry too much about the cancer, because he said you’ll probably be dead before the cancer gets you,” recalls Mr Jue Sue. “So I had a bit of a change of lifestyle. I hadn’t been up Mt Baldy

for 50 years and that used to be my playground.”

After losing some weight and successfully beating the cancer, the former scientist documented his daily walks and has become inspiration for many in the community, encouraging them to enjoy the natural beauty and health benefits of walking.

The former president of the Senior Roosters Rugby League and former Under-18s football coach lost 20kg thanks to his early morning adventures and can boast once recording a 22 minute return trip to the top and back. His passion for documenting everything lead him to instigate leaving a visitor sign-in book at the top of the mountain

and meant that he could roughly estimate how many people were annually making the trip. In 2009 approximately 2500 people were using Mt Baldy, but by 2013 it was up to 9000, thanks in part to Mr Jue Sue’s encouragement.

“I handed all this information to parks and wildlife and it was the worst thing I ever did because they wanted to come and change the track from a walk in the bush – which is what we all wanted – to something out of parks and gardens. It was ludicrous,” said Mr Jue Sue. “We had a nice bush track and then two years ago they spent $350,000 and completely wrecked it.

It’s now dangerous.”

Despite his disap-

pointment with the recent upgrade, Mr Jue Sue said he would continue his early morning ascent. His dog Jack is his keen companion on the walks and sometimes does the trip multiple times with Mr Jue Sue’s partner Barb.

Last Thursday morning Mr Jue Sue was greeted at the top of the mountain with champagne to celebrate the recent milestone.

He credits his doctor for giving him the impetus to get off the couch and back into action.

“I thought well I can either go and get another opinion or I can do something about it,” he said. “I thought no, I need to do something and the hill is right there, so I made it my mission.”

Police warn drivers to slow down Police are urging drivers to slow down after 20 drivers were caught speeding over one weekend across the Tablelands.

Two motorists detected travelling at speeds greater than 40km/h received $1177 infringement notices and licence suspensions.

A 31-year-old Portsmith man was intercepted on the Malanda Atherton Road, Malanda at about 6pm Saturday clocked at 118km/h in a 60km zone.

Clinic officially open

The long awaited Dimbulah Primary Health Centre was officially opened last week and now offers stateof-the-art care for those in the town and surrounding areas.

The old hospital stood proud for 50 years but became too small and run down to properly service the needs of 400 patients a month.

bers fought for a new facility and were rewarded by the State Government with a $4.3 million building that is double the size of its predecessor.

“The biggest positive is the privacy now,” said Director of Nursing at Dimbulah Glenda Fabris.

“You haven’t got people waiting in the hallway now where they could hear everything before. A lot of patients would go to Mareeba because it was hard to have that privacy.

“I’m sure this building will provide many years of outstanding health care for the people of this community,” he said.

The centre can now of-

fer telehealth services to patients who need to speak with a specialist doctor without the need to travel to them directly.

Executive Director of Rural and Remote Services, Gabrielle Honeywood, said it was exciting to provide a brand new, contemporary clinical facility for the area.

“The original building served us for over 50 years but as the community grew so did the need for improved clinical facili-

ties,” she said. “With more space for both patients and staff, the new Dimbulah Primary Health Centre will help local residents access services close to their home through innovations like telehealth.”

CHHHS Chief Executive Clare Douglas said a lot of thought had gone into the design and construction of the new Dimbulah Primary Health Centre. “I am proud of our new facility and congratulate everyone involved,” she said.

Work is about to start on renovations at Kerribee Park thanks to $1.35 million in funding.

It’s been nearly 40 years since the grandstands were first erected by volunteers and now they’re getting a face lift and an additional 500 seats, bringing the total seating capacity up to 3500.

“The grant application and project has allowed us to do in one year what we would have taken 10 or 15 years to achieve otherwise,” said Darryl Chaplain, president of the Mareeba District Rodeo

Association.

The project includes installing brand new LED lighting and an all weather state-of-the-art music quality PA system.

A new control room, broadcast box and stage platform are also on the cards.

The association put in over $450,000 of its own funding, together with over $900,000 from Natural Parks, Sport and Racing Queensland via their ‘Get in the Game’ program.

“It’s a major contribution from us and the government which is now go-

ing to make this venue the envy of a lot of sporting venues around the country with the standard of grandstand and the lighting and PA system. That’s what we wanted to achieve – to give to our community and Mareeba a world class venue.”

Mareeba Shire Council mayor Tom Gilmore attended a ‘turning of the sod’ event on Saturday evening to celebrate the start of the renovations that will be conducted by Mareeba company L M Engineering.

“Without this sort of assistance, our community

and other communities like this would be going backwards because we cannot simply do the things that we need to do because of the size and the type of community that we are,” said Cr Gilmore.

“If you have a look in retrospect the innovation that went into building those stands, all this work has served you well, it’s served our community well and it’s also served the people of North Queensland who enjoy and love rodeo and come to be entertained.

Jonsson’s proceed with legal action against the ABC

Legal proceedings have alledgedly commenced against the ABC over a report that owners of a property south west of Mt Garnet illegally logged about 60 hectares of forest thought to be home to koalas and other endangered species.

Owner of the property Warren Jonsson said he would be “coming at them like a freight train” for the ABC TV news story that claimed Wombinoo Station is under federal investigation for clearing the land without approval.

The ABC quoted a member of the Wilderness Society who claimed that “an assessment found the area was home to a population of Greater Gliders,

had a high chance of being a koala habitat and was home to other threatened or endangered species”.

But Mr Jonsson, a fourth generation farmer, denied the allegations stating he obtained a lawful permit from the Queensland Government in 2015 to clear native vegetation for high value agriculture and has since cleared about 600 hectares in accordance with that permit.

“I had all the permits in place,” said Mr Jonsson.

“I have done nothing illegal. I’ve spent $50,000 on consultants to conduct the studies and none of them found any koalas.”

Mr Jonsson said that since the report was aired on November 23 his family and business have been threatened with abusive emails, phone calls, Face-

book messages and verbal attacks. A sign on the property was also defaced with the words ‘Koala Killer’ and local police are investigating the setting alight of a bulldozer. Mr Jonsson also said that customers had dropped off at his farm shop – Jonsson’s Farm Market – in Cairns. But it is the reputation of the family business that Mr Jonsson is most concerned about.

“They are damaging the family name,” he said.

“We’re respected people in the community and I try and do things for the whole community. These sort of lies are not warranted.”

Mr Jonsson said his solicitor had begun legal proceedings against the ABC and that other organisations that were involved in the report will also be contacted.

across the Tablelands since then have come forward and expressed their objection about rate increases across all categories and the ever diminishing and poor services by council.

Our concerned rate payers committee have endeavoured to meet with council to discuss rate payers concerns but at every turn the Mayor, CEO and Councillors have dodged any direct face to face dialogue.

I would have thought that in a Democracy the TRC are obligated to listen to their constituents concerns, take them aboard and try to come up with answers. This current council behaves more like a totalitarian dictatorship. The last email forwarded to council where we demanded an open meeting with a vale threat that it would be a fatal mistake if once again the council ignored us, they used as an excuse to once again not talk to their concerned constituents. It is an obvious

admittance of insecurity by the Mayor and Councillors on their part and shows a lack of experience in the job they have undertaken. They refuse to talk and seem to not have the confidence to come up with the answers we as ratepayers are seeking.

What is more concerning however is, that under this present council and their obnoxious continuing rate increases, lack of services and not willing to discuss issues, is a direct threat to the economic viability, beauty and general attractiveness of the Tablelands as a place to live. This area is on the decline at a rapid rate and particularly the town of Atherton.

Tolga Rail Trail gets an upgrade

$100,000 of upgrades to the Rail Trail in Tolga were celebrated on Saturday morning with Tablelands Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella and division 6 councillor Bronwyn Voyce.

Works have not been finalised in the area but council took the opportu-

nity to celebrate and congratulate those involved in the creation of the new signage and beautification of the area along Lawson Street. Kids were also invited to have their first experience of the pump track that has been built next to the park along Main Street.

The funding was part of a Queensland Government Grant totalling $3 million as part of the 2016-2017

Works for Queensland program. The Rail trail has now been completed all the way to Walkamin and a grant has been secured to begin extending the trail from Atherton to Herberton.

Saturday’s event was also an opportunity to officially open the Kairi-Tolga Loop - a 28km extension of the Rail Trail on sealed and gravel roads that gives

cyclists and walkers an opportunity to see more of the region including the diversity of agriculture and historic sites.

The Rail Trail now offers 20.5km of tracks for walkersm cyclists and horse riders (horse access from Walkamin to Grove Street only). The track also connects to the world-class Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park.

The four weather stations, funded through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, have been delivered in partnership with Tablelands Family Day Care Scheme, Atherton Live Weather and Tablelands Regional Council.

WHEN TALKING ABOUT INFERTILITY As the Christmas and New Year period approaches, many people are planning gatherings of family and friends. The months ahead are some of the most carefree times in the year. For couples experiencing infertility however, these events can be more difficult.

Women and couples who are trying to conceive have to navigate a series of predictable questions. ”So when are you going to have babies?” “When do I get some grandchildren?” and “Why aren’t you drinking, are you pregnant?” The couple may have been trying for years and maybe desperately want children but not want to speak about it. There are also predictable scenarios. the “super fertile” sister with a large tribe of kids who is full of advice “you should try eating kale”. The pregnant cousin who loudly complains about how hard pregnancy is. Spending time around babies and pregnant women can be confronting and can be even more difficult after experiences such as miscarriage. In addition to this , they will usually be subjected to well meaning advice such as “just relax and it will happen”.

“Just relax and it will happen” “Just get really drunk” “You are too stressed” “Stop thinking about it” “Take a holiday and you will get pregnant” Many people who are treated for infertility have complex problems with the production of eggs or sperm. A number of these people were born with these issues. A good way to understand this is to think about someone born with a kidney or lung that does not function normally. These complex issues are not going to be cured by relaxing or taking a holiday.

I tell my patients that if relaxing was the solution, then I would be managing a day spa. A fertility clinic such as the one I work within requires a highly advanced embryology laboratory to overcome the challenges of some forms of medical infertility. Keep in mind that there are many causes of medical infertility and there is no single simple solution to all of these problems.

The relationship between stress and fertility has been studied in many scientific studies. There is insufficient evidence to demonstrate that stress independently causes infertility. When someone says, “just relax”, it can create feelings of guilt, that the woman is to blame for the fertiliy issue. This common and well-meaning piece of advice can be a source of distress and added pressure.

Couples dealing with infertility should not lose hope. Even after long periods of trying to conceive, many couples are able to conceive naturally. There are ways to support and assist natural fertility. Medical infertility can make it harder to conceive but not impossible.

So next time you are spending time with someone who is experiencing infertility, avoid the temptation to offer advice.

The truth is, they have probably read and tried everything already! Let them know that you care. Offer a hug. Sometimes it helps to just listen.

entertainment Christmas on Byrnes Mareeba retailers are looking forward to opening late this Friday night as part of Christmas on Byrnes and the Post Office centre Christmas night markets.

BYRNES Street Mareeba is set to come alive this Friday night with the first ever ‘Christmas on Byrnes’ – a one night shopping extravaganza.

With Christmas almost upon us, it's time to do the rounds and buy your presents for family and friends. So why not shop local and help boost the economy.

An initiative of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, the Mareeba Business Women’s Club and Mareeba Shire Council, the event is the first of its kind and is all about promoting and encouraging people to shop and buy local this Christmas.

Mareeba Shire councillor Lenore Wyatt said the benefits of buying locally, from local retailers, is especially important this time of the year.

“It’s important everyone supports local businesses, especially at the busiest time of the year,” said Cr Wyatt.

Businesses along Byrnes Street will be open

late from 5pm to 9pm, plus there will be a ‘pop up shop’ square with local businesses located in the block of land opposite The Gateway Hotel.

“Mareeba has so much to offer and by shopping local you are supporting our local businesses and their livelihoods as well as keeping jobs in our area.

“It really will be a shopping feast with something for everyone,” The Mareeba Post Office Centre Christmas Night Markets will also be kicking off from 5pm this Friday. The annual Christmas markets feature an array of market stalls, as well as businesses within the centre open until 9pm.

The Post Office Centre Christmas Markets will run every Friday night in the lead up to Christmas. Santa photos and face painting, along with Christmas carols are all on show inside the post office centre.

One lucky shopper will also walk away with a mega prize on the night with vouchers and gifts

Newcrest Mining Limited wishes to advise that it will be undertaking an airborne geophysical survey at the company’s Bulimba Project located approximately 50km northwest of Chillagoe, 130km west of Mareeba and 150km north of Georgetown, in northeast Queensland. Subject to weather, the survey will take up to 3 weeks to complete, commencing from Friday 1 December, 2017.

The survey will be flown using a Cessna 210 aircraft with fixed stinger attachment. The aircraft will traverse the survey area along 100 meter spaced survey lines, and the plane will be flying at an elevation of approximately 60 meters above ground level.

The survey will be carried out only during daylight hours, and operations for this survey will be based out of Wrotham Park airfield and Chillagoe airfield.

Atherton bowler Michael Salerno has taken his second five wicket haul (5-36) for the season and helped his side to a first innings win over Norths in their Cricket Far North match at Loder Park on Saturday.

After posting a 7-267 first innings, Atherton went onto bowl Norths out for 155 and take the match points. Sep Barletta 3-28, Paul Nasser 1-31 and Dan Parnell 1-38 also took wickets for Atherton.

This Saturday, Atherton travel to Cairns for a one day match with Mulgrave.

Mareeba boys return home Australian champs TWO young Mareeba boys returned home last week as Australian amateur boxing champions.

Matthew Carroll and Kurtis Bryde had a hugely successful three days competing in their weight divisions as part of the Queensland team at the Sunstate Amateur Boxing League National titles held in Melbourne from November 23-25.

Both boys faced Tasmanians in their final fights and both walked away as Australian champions.

13-year-old Matthew had a tough first round in the 44.5kg school boys junior division, but came back firing in the next two rounds to claim the title.

“It was a great feeling to win,” said Matthew.

“The first round was pretty tough and it just made me more determined to win.”

While, 12-year-old Curtis, who fought in the 51kg sub junior division walked away champion after his three round fight with a

unanimous points decision from the judges.

“It was great, I was ecstatic,” said Curtis.

Coach Wayne Bryde from Bryde’s Boxing Gym in Mareeba could not be more proud of the youngsters.

“I was over the moon,” said My Bryde.

“It didn’t really sink in till the next day that we done it.

“At their age to be at the top is just amazing.

“They did exactly everything the way we trained for.”

The boys will now break for the school holidays and return next year with Wayne hoping to bring a tournament to Mareeba early next year.

“We also want to thank everyone in the community who supported the boys and helped them get to the nationals, thank you.”

Amateur boxing is very strong in Mareeba and the boys hope to return next year to defend their titles.

Gymnastics open to all in holidays Mareeba gymnastics is opening its doors to anyone interested in giving it a go without becoming a member during the Christmas school holidays.

This is the first time the club has offered the opportunity for people to try gymnastics via camp days and hourly sessions.

The day camps will take place on December 18 and 19 and is open to all school aged children.

It will include three hours of gymnastics, as well as a swim, arts and crafts and a movie.

Non-members are also welcome to head to the come and try days which are split into age

Roosters on track for centenary

The Atherton Senior Roosters have been back in training for two weeks now as the club prepares for their 100th year of competition in 2018.

New head coach Graham Clark said he was pleased with how the squad was jelling in the pre-season training and the player numbers on the park for the early sessions.

“I’m really happy at how the players are thriving at training and everyone is keen to step up and improve.”Clark said.

“There is plenty of competitiveness around and we have high expectations for

the new season.”

The Roosters expect to have the bulk of their 2017 group back and have some new recruits coming in to fill a few gaps.

First of the new signings is forward Issac Pedersen who has arrived from the Melbourne Storm where he played in the national under twenty competition.

Graham Clark said he would unveil other new signings as they joined the Roosters early in the new year. The Roosters will have a two week break from training over the main Christmas period.

MAREEBA’S ladies cricket team have walked away champions of the inaugural Cricket Far North Ladies 20/20 competition.

The undefeated Cricket Chicks played a close game against the Innisfail Thunder in the grand final held under lights in Cairns on Saturday night.

Ladies cricket is becoming increasingly popular throughout the far north after the 20/20 games first started in Mareeba earlier this year.
