Conference unites Rotarians and community ROTARIANS from as far away as Timor-Leste converged in Mareeba over the weekend for the organisation’s annual district conference. The two-day conference for Rotary District 9550 was marked with the planting of a tree and plaque unveiling at Rotary Park by Conference chair Joe Moro, District Governor Ida Portella and Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore (all pictured). Themed “The Magic of Community” several guest speakers from across the region and Australia attended the conference at Mareeba International Club on Saturday and Sunday, which then finished with a gala dinner at the Rocky Creek Igloo on Sunday night. Rotary District 9550 is one of the most extraordinary Rotary districts in Australia, covering an area of 1.2 million square kilometres across most of the Northern Territory, northern Queensland and Timor-Leste, with 45 clubs, including an online club, in over 27 cities and towns.

In their sights Biboohra crocs targeted for removal by State Govt By Michael Serenc SALTWATER crocodiles harassing farmers at Biboohra will finally be targeted for removal after the State Government caved in to pressure from the local community. State Environment minister Steven Miles announced the move last Friday after meeting with Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore last Wednesday to discuss the issue, where there have been several

reported saltwater crocodile sightings at Two Mile Creek, far from the animals’ natural habitat. “We have committed to declaring that Two Mile Creek in Mareeba is not saltwater crocodile habitat and all crocodiles there will be targeted for removal,” Dr Miles said. “We’ve also committed to improving our communications with all the councils so that they have better understanding of the work our officers are doing in their communities.”

The announcement follows an outcry by a group of Biboohra farmers and lobbying by Mareeba Shire Council to have the crocs removed from local waterways, an issue that was first reported by The Express on March 22. Cr Gilmore said it was a good outcome for all involved. “It was a very productive meeting and I’m glad we’re moving towards a satisfactory resolution of the issue of crocodiles in Two Mile Creek,” he said.

TWO Mareeba teenagers have proven they are among Queensland’s top academic performers after each winning a TJ Ryan Memorial Scholarship. Former Mareeba State High student Katelyn Dickinson and former St Stephen’s Catholic College student Kate Wilcox were the lucky recipients of the annual TJ Ryan Memorial Medal and Scholarship. Valued at up to $10,000 over a maximum of five years, the scholarship is named in honour of Thomas Joseph Ryan, a former teacher, barrister and Queensland Premier. It recognises Queensland students who demonstrate a strong commitment to high academic achievement and outstanding leadership in both their school and local community. Ms Dickinson, who was Mareeba State High’s 2016 school captain, said she was thrilled by her achievement. “It’s such an honour. You’d think being in a rural area you don’t get that many opportunities but I think this shows that even a Mareeba girl can achieve this sort of an award,” she said. “I definitely have plenty of things where I can put the scholarship to good use, whether it be paying off university fees or buying textbooks.” Ms Dickinson was involved in several sports and community groups last year which helped her to win the scholarship, in addition to achieving an OP 1. “I really like to get involved with the community,” she said. “My advice to future school graduates would be to get involved in everything you can possibly be involved in and keep the balance between your studies and extra-curricular activities. “It’s really important to keep a social life.” The 18-year-old is currently studying medicine at James Cook University in Townsville and said she was considering becoming a paediatrician upon graduating.

Govt to take action on problem crocs From Page 1 Monitoring cameras were installed at various locations to detect the presence of the animals following the removal of a 1.3m saltwater croc from Mareeba’s sewage treatment plant and a 0.6 m satlie from a private property on March 2. The spokesman said Biboorha’s current zoning under the government’s new Queensland Crocodile Management Plan may also be changed to a “Zone F Atypical Crocodile Habitat”, which would mean that for any future confirmed saltwater crocodile sighting, the animal would be automatically targeted by EHP for removal. Biboohra is currently in “Monitoring and Education Zone E” under the Plan, which means only

crocodiles “displaying dangerous behaviour” within that zone can be targeted for removal by rangers. Speaking to The Express before last Friday’s announcement, Cook MP Billy Gordon backed the push to remove crocodiles from Two Mile Creek after talking with Biboohra farmer Evan McGrath. “It’s obviously an unacceptable risk at the moment. My view initially was to get some facts around the issue and that was to speak to people like Evan,” Mr Gordon said. “Growing up in Mareeba and going out for a swim at the bridge there at Biboohra, it’s a shame that it is a risk there now. These crocs are not in their natural environment.

“The last thing we want is a young child to be taken in the Barron River or at Biboohra.” While he did not support a croc cull at Biboorha, Mr Gordon said he may be open to supporting a cull of crocs along populated, coastal areas where they were greater in number. “We have them in their natural environment along the coast thriving and their numbers are quite high,” he said. “I spent a couple of days in Weipa not long ago and somebody up there that I spoke to outlined what might be a good economic development opportunity out of culling.” Mr Gordon said he would like to see Biboohra’s Melaleuca Crocodile Farm owner Juergen Arnold authorised by the State Government to remove

crocs so they can be taken there. The EHP spokesman said Mr Arnold would be entitled to tender for captured saltwater crocodiles, provided his farm met “public safety and animal welfare criteria, as specified in a Code of Practice”. Speaking to media in Cairns last Wednesday, Dr Miles dismissed calls for a croc cull by Kennedy MP Bob Katter and One Nation as “not informed by the science”. “The scientists tell us that a cull would not make people any safer,” Dr Miles said. “What makes people safer is a good education campaign as well as tiered, targeted removal focused on areas where there’s most likely to be interactions between people and crocodiles.”

Council gets eco-friendly MAREEBA Shire Council is pushing to get more eco-friendly as it rolls out solar power and makes its assets more energy efficient. Council development and governance manager Anthony Archie said in addition to the two Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems recently installed on council’s Rankin St and Kowa St administration buildings, other facilities may be in line for a solar upgrade. “We focus on areas in council where the power bills seem rather high and once people are mindful of that they can do something about it,” he said. “There’s a couple of other council facilities which could be on the cards for solar. Pools use a lot of electricity and we’ve already installed a heating system that’s more environmentally friendly, but there’s still energy savings to be had using the sun.” Energy efficient floodlights have also been installed at council’s Kowa St depot. “The next thing we are planning is a strategy for our water and sewerage operations,” Mr Archie said. “It’s not as easy to implement because the water and sewerage power usage is mainly during dusk, but there’s still some energy savings that can be achieved.

“It’s still in its early stages but we’ll be looking into that area. Financial savings are the key.” Mr Archie said with solar power now a proven and reliable technology, council had confidence in rolling it out across some of its assets. Solgen Energy was the successful bidder for the $163,000 PV Systems, which are due to be switched on this month. The systems are expected to save the ratepayer almost $40,000 per year, with the Kowa St building system allowing up to 75kw per hour to be put back into the electricity network when not in use. The council’s Rankin St building system will able to put up to 10kw per hour back to the electricity network when not in use. Councillors have also expressed their support for the solar systems. Chamber stands up for hospital THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce will fight to ensure the town’s hospital is equipped to cater for the area’s growing population. Chamber president Joe Moro said Mareeba’s health services had to be maintained and improved in coming years, as the hospital prepares to deal with a $2.1 million Council of Australian Governments (COAG) funding cut from this October. “Our position is that we want the hospital’s current funding and service levels maintained and we expect that the hospital will continue to meet the demands from our community,” he said. “We are expecting the hospital to be at a better standard than what it is today heading into the future.” Mr Moro said Mareeba was already the biggest town in the Tablelands region, had a growing population and a “vibrant economy” largely based on a diverse array of agriculture. That meant adequate health services were a priority. A group of concerned Mareeba residents held a public meeting to discuss concerns over the future

of the town’s hospital yesterday. Mr Moro said the Chamber would work with the group and Mareeba Shire Council to ensure the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) would not ignore the growing healthcare needs of the region. “Between the concerned residents, council and the Chamber that message has been put very clearly to the Health Service,” Mr Moro said. “The Mareeba Hospital is very important to the community and we have high expectations, not only for the current service levels but for future services to be improved over time.” Mr Moro said if there was not a solution found for how outpatient (GP) services would be managed once the COAG funding was cut in October, the Mareeba community would become “very sceptical and hostile towards the Health Department”. The Northern Queensland Primary Health Network is currently working with local GPs to establish a new outpatient services model once the COAG funding expires.

Pool owners to put safety first LOCAL pool owners are being encouraged to make sure their pool fencing is still safe and secure. Mareeba’s Aquafix Pool Shop owner John Arcidiacono, a licensed pool safety inspector, said he often found several issues with pool fences. “The main ones are having objects within the 900mm non-climbable zone and 1200mm additional clearance areas,” he said. “There’s various things such as gates which aren’t self-closing and self-latching. I find that quite often. “It is important an owner makes sure their pool fence complies because there are fines applicable to them.” Non-compliance with pool safety standards can cost an individual owner an $853.30 fine from council and an on-the-spot fine of $243.80 for individuals who fail to register their pool with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission. Mr Arcidiacono said he thought there was a level of complacency with pool owners in the area. “People may chose to ignore those safety standards and think nothing will happen, but if it saves a child’s life, it’s worthwhile,” he said. “They have to make sure their fence complies.” State Housing minister Mick de Brenni urged pool owners to take advantage of the swimming off-season to check their pool fencing is up to scratch. Walkamin company wins big AN innovative local couple have earned worldwide recognition for their banana-based products after taking out a prestigious award in New York. Natural Evolution Foods (NEF) founders Robert and Krista Watkins won Gold in the Food and Beverage category at the Edison Awards late last month. The win recognised NEF’s “NutroLock” process, a world-first food preservation technology designed to make use of nutritious food that is normally thrown away because of its appearance or over supply on the market. The process is scientifically proven to lock in nutrients 20 to 50 times higher than conventional food processing techniques. Mrs Watkins said she was delighted by the win, which comes after NEF won the Best Proven Product category at the Tropical North Queensland Innovation Awards and Innovation in Sustainable Technologies Award at the Premier’s Sustainability Awards last year. “It’s absolutely incredible. We’re really humbled to receive the award because it’s gone before 3000 professionals who voted on it,”

she said. “We were the first company in the world to commercially produce banana flour and we’ve made all of these incredible scientific discoveries with resistant starch and the 5ht serotonin found in lady finger bananas.” Edison Awards executive director Frank Bonafilia said NEF was “a true innovator out of the many products in its category”. Established in 2015, NEF grew out of the Watkins’ original business selling flour produced from excess Cavendish and Lady Finger Bananas for local, national and international markets. The couple now lead the world in selling banana-based products, establishing contracts with suppliers in Japan, the United Kingdom and South Korea. “We made some great connections while we were in New York and we’re going to be working with one of the advanced education institutions in America doing real-time, live lectures helping students create their own innovations,” she said. “We need to foster that next generation of

innovators.” Mrs Watkins said she wanted to help spur more innovation on the Tablelands with plans to build an innovation hub or “dream factory”, allowing locals the chance to develop their product ideas. “People could come and work on an idea. It’s really that team approach,” she said. “Part of the Edison philosophy is we’re all working towards doing something that positively impacts the world.” Mrs Watkins said the hub would help to inspire budding local innovators to build on their ideas and not feel constrained by the tyranny of distance living in a regional area. “Rob and I found many ways not to do something through trial and error but we never gave up and we just followed our passion and belief because we knew what our product was doing,” she said. “You can’t let anything stop you when you’re changing people’s lives, you just have to keep going. “Live your dreams and just get out there and do it.”

Dilapidated hall to be sold off

EVELYN’S derelict Pioneer Hall will be offered for sale by tender after Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) could not find any locals willing to take it over. The hall, which has been closed since March last year, needs a whopping $87,500 to bring it up to scratch with the kitchen area infested with termites. Another $5000 would be required to remove an overhead water tank and its deteriorating stand. Back in December, a group of Evelyn locals launched an 11th hour bid to prevent the hall from being

sold off but could not agree on a course of action following a January meeting with council officers, Division 2 councillor Annette Haydon and Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella. Cr Haydon expressed her disappointment that the hall had been neglected by a succession of previous councils since amalgamation occurred in 2008. “It’s been allowed to deteriorate to the extent that it would cost almost $100,000 to get it back up to scratch,” she said. “We’ve got to look after the assets

we have and yet we want to build new things. “I don’t blame any one council in particular, I just think as a whole council should have been putting some maintenance into some of these assets.” Former hall caretaker Bob Kelso, who still lives next door to the building, previously told The Express he supported council selling it off given its lack of use and dilapidated state. The closest hall to Evelyn is Ravenshoe Town Hall and The Mountains Institute, which are both 15km away.

Angel Flight expansion THE Tablelands-based boss of a major flight charity wants to expand the service across the Far North. Angel Flight CEO and former Tablelands councillor Marjorie Pagani said the service was looking at recruiting volunteer pilots further west towards Mt Isa and Croydon and north towards the Cape and Gulf into areas like Normanton. The charity coordinates non-emergency flights to help country people access specialist medical treatment that would otherwise be unavailable to them because of the vast distance and high travel costs. All flights are free and may involve travel to

medical facilities anywhere in Australia. “We have a lot of pilots based in Cairns and on the Tablelands, but we’re trying to generate more awareness of the service so we can bring people from the remote communities in for treatment to places like Cairns and Townsville,” Ms Pagani said. “If somebody’s coming in for regular dialysis or chemotherapy, the last thing they want is to get in the car and drive for 12 hours back home again.” Ms Pagani said Angel Flight was able to help some of the Ravenshoe café blast victims in the aftermath of the tragedy in 2015 to fly to Townsville and Charters Towers.

“If you know somebody that needs help, it’s a free service and our volunteer pilots are welltrained and always happy to bring people in,” she said. “What we really want to do is make the health profession aware that we’re out there, they can refer people to us and we can take over from there. It’s a very limited amount of fuss.” A pilot herself, Ms Pagani has been involved with Angel Flight since its foundation in 2003. THE promising future of agriculture in the Mareeba and Tablelands region will proudly be on display at this year’s Rotary FNQ Field Days. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said the industry continued to expand and had an enviable reputation across Australia. “Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy,” he said. “A lot of industries and businesses survive off the spending that occurs from the gross domestic value of agriculture on the Tablelands. “It’s always been an exciting industry.” A 2015 report by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries found the gross value of production for agriculture across both the Mareeba and Tablelands shires reached more than $550 million in 2014-15. The report found the top three industries were bananas ($91 million),

avocados ($83 million) and mangoes ($51 million). Mr Moro said avocados in particular had the potential to become the region’s highest value crop over the next year. “With expansion of avocados and the size of the trees that have been planted, I wouldn’t be surprised if that industry cracked $100 million in 2016-17,” he said. Citrus and sweet potatoes are also making a comeback in the region, while blueberries are an example of new crops making inroads. “You’ve also got a wide range of tropical crops continuing to expand from dragon fruit all the way up to papayas,” Mr Moro said. “We have one of the most diverse growing regions in the world.” With Field Days providing the perfect platform to promote agriculture across North Queensland, Mr Moro said farmers could look forward to seeing the latest and greatest

developments in the industry. “I’m hoping Field Days will reveal some of the new technology now being used, such as robotics and drones,” he said. “That’s really making inroads into agriculture. It’s early days yet but the technology jumps there are phenomenal.” Underpinning those technological advances is the economic flowon effect agriculture produces in the region, with Mr Moro pointing out just how interconnected the industry really is. “Agriculture spends a lot of money within the region. “You’ve got all your suppliers, transport companies and even the water business – it has a flowon effect right through the local economy,” he said. “A number of local businesses are known as agribusinesses because of the fact they provide assistance or supplies to the agricultural industry.”

Distiller backs agave plan THE founder of an award-winning Walkamin distillery has backed long-term plans by MSF Sugar to establish a $100 million blue agave and bio-refinery operation in the region. Mt Uncle Distillery head distiller and director Mark Watkins said he would be interested in purchasing locally-grown blue agave for his craft spirits if MSF eventually established a major plantation in the area. Popular in Mexico, blue agave is used to produce ethanol and is a key ingredient in tequila. “There’s definitely a market for it, especially for Australian-produced products,” Mr Watkins said. “Agave spirit is trending as a growth area, especially the higher-end ones. “The only limiting factor is having plants in the ground.” Mr Watkins already has about 2000 blue agave plants on his property and is planning to release an “agave spirit” drink in December. “We already harvested our first lot of plants in January,” he said. “They take between five and seven

years to reach maturity.” The entrepreneur said the northern parts of the Tablelands, such as Walkamin and Mareeba, had “perfect” growing conditions for blue agave as they were generally free of the threat of frost. “The climate and soil is really good here for it,” he said. “Where agave normally grows in Mexico is generally in a volcanic area. It’s very dry there but we get higher rainfall so that will probably boost growth. “The growth rates we’ve had with our plants are very good.” Both Mareeba and Tablelands shires are currently drought-declared zones by the State Government, which makes the region ideal for growing blue agave, a drought-resistant crop. If MSF’s plan is eventually realised, the bio-refinery would be built alongside the company’s existing Tableland mill at Arriga. MSF would need about 4000ha of land to grow blue agave, with the plant acting as a “complementary crop” to cane and able to be harvested between December and May each year.

Debutantes make final touches ahead of ball THE 2017 debutante ball has arrived, as the girls make final touches ahead of the ball on Saturday night. Poise, grace and elegance will be in vogue when 21 young women formally enter Mareeba’s social world at the St Thomas’s Parish Debutante Ball this Saturday at the Mareeba International Club ball room. Debutante, a French word meaning “female beginner”, traditionally marked a young lady who had reached the age of maturity

and was now eligible to marry, with the Ball held to display her to eligible bachelors and their families. Historically, a Debutante Ball is an event where a young woman is formally introduced into society. Generally, only young ladies from wealthy and socially influential families were invited to participate. In Mareeba, while many of the historical traditions are still maintained, a more modern approach is taken to the event. In particular, Debutante Ball co-coordinator Daniela Soncin recognises that while tradition is important, it is also necessary to change with society to ensure that the Ball continues to remain relevant to the young participants. With Debutante Balls having been held on and off in Mareeba since the 1920s, a more contemporary approach has resulted in an increase in interest from young locals. This Saturday will see 21 young women and their partners being presented to local dignitaries, family and friends. The highlight of the Congratulations to all Debutantes. evening will be the young debutantes and partners We are proud to be associated with showcasing their dancing skills, which they have the Mareeba Debutante Ball. perfected over a period of 12 weeks. Mrs Soncin said the skills which the debutantes Cami 0439 595 250 and partners had learnt and the dedication they camilee965@hotmail.com had shown to be prepared for the night would serve them in good stead once they finish high school. Shop 89A Byrnes Street, Mareeba In particular, she said that the entire group should be congratulated on their commitment to being involved in such a unique event on the Mareeba social calendar. The preparation process for next year’s Mareeba Debutante Ball will begin in January 2018 when the committee meets with parents and puts out a call for expressions of interest among Year 11 and 12 students of the local high schools.

Custom Made Flowers and Decorations for all occasions.

Bees cause upset in Thursday thriller

TOP SHOTS: Mareeba Golf Club president Ron Blake with Men’s overall winner Matthew Spilsbury, Club captain Gavin Smith and Ladies overall winner Karlee Reid.

KILLER Bees have become giant slayers after knocking off ladder leaders Spare Parts in Round 8 of Mareeba Basketball’s Men’s Summer League. Despite facing an understrength Parts outfit, Bees were under no illusions about the task ahead, having not won a game all season. With a sprightly pack of youngsters including Charles Socie, Roger Poux and Lachlan Hammond, Bees were full of energy in what would become a tightly fought contest last Thursday night. Behind by only a handful of points in the first three quarters, a final quarter rally saw Bees just edge past Parts to take out the match 24-23. Bees point guard and captain Eddie Stefanutti praised his side’s young play-

Golf club looks to future after Open MAREEBA Golf Club is on the look out for the next generation of players after another successful Mareeba Open late last month. 154 golfers across all skill levels contested the Open on the weekend of April 22-23, including several promising juniors from Cairns. Club captain Gavin Smith said he was keen to entice local players from Mareeba under the age of 16 to the club as a way to foster new talent in the region. “We had some juniors from Cairns at the Open and it was brilliant to watch them play some really good golf,” he said. “It would be nice to get some local juniors from here compete against the Cairns clubs and put Mareeba on the map.” The club offers free coaching clinics for juniors and Smith said if there were enough numbers, he would be happy to hold a nine-hole competition for

them. “We’re looking for the club to become sustainable and if we can get some juniors involved, they will be our future,” he said. Meanwhile, Tolga’s Karlee Reid took out the Agrade overall ladies division in a two-hole playoff at the 36-hole Open with a score of 165. Cairns’ Matt Spilsbury was the men’s overall winner after notching up 146 points. Smith said players from as far away as Charters Towers contested the Open, with positive feedback on the great condition of the course. “It’s a credit to a band of about 10 people who are out here on mowers nearly every day,” he said. “They contributed to a really successful weekend for the club.” For junior coaching enquiries, call Mareeba Golf Club on 4092 1528.

ers for getting the win. “They’re the ones who put in the big minutes and shots. They should get the accolades,” he said. “Our defence has been really good this season, but our offence hasn’t been that great.” Stefanutti said Akil Islam was also a standout throughout the match and helped Bees stay in the game. “Now that we’ve had a win, the boys are feeling more confident,” he said. “It’s put a spring in their step. They’re much happier with their game.” In the week’s other matches, Red Devils beat Barras 58-30, Ciggy Butts pipped Stingrays 41-38 and the Green Hornets forfeited to Blue Angels.

Big turnout for local triathlon ALMOST 500 competitors swam, rode and ran their way to the finish line in another successful Yungaburra Triathlon. Held between April 22 and 23, the annual event, now in its third year had perfect weather conditions for the five different races held. Competitors were impressed with the course, volunteers and cheer squads along the cycle leg. Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella helped out on both days and was amazed by the enthusiasm and determination of competitors. “It was fantastic to see the diversity in competitors and to get an insight into the sport of the triathlon,” he said. “From the seven-year-olds giving the kids aquathon a go up to the 60 plus year olds doing the Olympic distance, I congratulate all of the competitors for their

great show of sportsmanship and their perseverance in completing the courses. “To deliver an event of this magnitude takes a lot of planning and the support of the local community. “I would also like to congratulate the organising committee and event coordinator Donna Cifuentes from Sports Training and Recreation Services for their exceptional work in pulling together a fantastic weekend.” Matt Hutchinson and Megan Hendry took out first place for the Olympic events, Tyson Sundman and Emma Simpson won the Sprint events, Brad McIntyre and Klare Marcic finished first for the Enticer events and Care Chiropractic Queensland nailed the Corporate event. The next Yungaburra Triathlon will be held on April 21 and 22 next year with similar road closures to be expected.

COME AND HAVE A BOWL: Members of the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club look forward to welcoming you to social bowls.

Social bowls a hit

LOCAL community clubs are being urged to try social barefoot bowls after a successful night time outing by the Mareeba Business Women’s Club on April 21. Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club president Sue Brady said while night time bowls was not a scheduled event, social groups or clubs were more than welcome to make a booking. “People do enjoy it,” she said. “The Business Women’s Club couldn’t believe the facilities we had. They’re looking to come back again very

shortly, that’s how keen they were.” Brady said she hoped social bowls events would translate into a few regular players, which had already started to happen. “We run a full-week competition and we have eight new bowlers playing in it at the moment,” she said. “We’re trying to get people to join up and play regularly.” To make a social booking with Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club, call 0458 729 320.

Tolga Hotel Roosters recognised Race Day with XXXX campaign THIS SATURDAY 6TH MAY MORROW PARK, TOLGA Gates Open 11am - First Race 1pm

THE Atherton Roosters will be featured on Queensland’s favourite beer ahead of this year’s State of Origin series. The Roosters have been named as one of 12 clubs across the state to appear on more than 45 million limited edition cans and bottles of XXXX Gold, XXXX Bitter and XXXX Gold Australian Pale Ale. The club’s Darryl Day said he was thrilled with the announcement. “Being selected for the XXXX Limited Edition is a huge recognition for the Roosters as we prepare for our 100 years celebration in 2018. The Roosters thank all involved for this fantastic honour and we are backing the Maroons for another triumphant year” he said. “Like the Maroons, the Atherton Senior Roosters

have a very strong connection with XXXX and there has been plenty drunk at our club which is playing its 99th season in 2017.” XXXX marketing manager Richard Knight said the campaign was designed to pay “homage to some of the local clubs and senior teams where many great players have come from in Queensland to form the state side”. “It’s these local Queensland footy clubs who’ve taught the legends of the game how to be great and we thought it fitting to recognise their support,” he said. “We may have featured 12 clubs this year, but we reckon these special cans and bottles represent all the footy clubs, volunteers and supporters right across the state who week in, week out get behind local footy.”

Williams and Pride hooker Connor Jones helped run a training session for Mareeba’s Emerging Talent Squad at Davies Park, casting an eye over the juniors as they honed their footy skills. The former North Queensland Cowboys and Origin player was impressed by the squad, which was the brainchild of Mareeba A-grade coach and junior development officer Tye Ingebrigtsen.

Williams said his former club Innisfail, where he was previously A-grade coach, ran a similar junior development program. “I’ve seen the effect it has on these young fellers. They don’t get the exposure as they would if they were down on the coast,” he said. “The biggest thing I’ve noticed is how they listen and hang on to everything that Tye and co-captain Ian King are saying, which is very important. “He’s got a good bunch of kids that are willing to learn and that’s half the battle.” Williams said the youngsters had the potential to one day play for the Pride at State level

if they continued to focus on developing their skills. “Obviously, this is a pathway to our club as well,” he said. “What I’ve seen so far with this squad is really good. It’s basic skills but we do exactly the same at training, whether it’s Intrust Super Cup or the NRL.” Williams said he himself benefitted from a similar junior program as a young player. “These kids could bloom in five or six years time and that’s exactly what we’re chasing,” he said. “What the Gladiators are doing up here is outstanding.” Meanwhile, Mareeba’s A-grade side return to the park after three weeks off to face Tully at Tully Showgrounds this Saturday from 6pm.
