Gateway wins award

The Gateway Hotel in Mareeba has won an award for its stunning renovation from a tired old pub to a family and youth-friendly venue for food and drinks.

The building was transformed over a 14 month period by Kairi builders Higham Building Group and is now the winner of the Master Builder Queensland ‘Refurbishment/Renovation up to $2 million’ in the Far North region – and will now go through to the state finals later this year.

“The idea was to give customers a pub they were proud to call their local,” said manager Callum Foo who worked alongside owners Peter and Chelley Howe who bought the business in 2015.

“We wanted to give them a nicer option and we wanted it to be family orientated but cater for the younger crowd as well.”

The venue is home to bars, pokies, a beer garden, restaurant, kids area and a drive through bottle shop and re-opened just over a year ago with a fresh new look while still retaining its historic character and charm.

“We wanted to try and keep the country heritage,” said Mr Foo. “We’re proud to be part of the Mareeba community.”

The building was entered into the awards by Simon and Kristy Higham from Higham Building Group.

The Gateway Hotel in Mareeba was completely refurbished a year ago (main photo) and is now almost unrecogniseable from the pub it was before (left).

Second croc at Two Mile Creek

The Two Mile Creek croc crackdown continues with wildlife officers catching another saltwater crocodile last week (29 August).

Environment Minister Steven Miles said wildlife officers removed a 2.3 metre animal from a trap deployed in Two Mile Creek.

“This successful operation follows the removal of another 2.3 metre croc from Mareeba in late

July,” Mr Miles said.

“The location and size of this crocodile matches one of the animals spotted from the air by wildlife officers during a helicopter inspection of the Mareeba area on 8 August 2017.

“Wildlife Officers moved the trap in that section of the creek after observing the crocodile’s location from the helicopter and are confident it is the same animal.”

The crocodile will be

moved to a crocodile farm or zoo.

Mr Miles said the owner of the property had called EHP on 1300 130 372 to report several crocodiles in his dam in early July 2017.

Efforts are continuing to remove a juvenile (60cm) estuarine crocodile in a nearby dam.

“Crocs do not belong in this area and we are targeting any crocodiles sighted there for removal,” he said.

EHP officers will re-

spond to any crocodile sighting reported in this new zone by inspecting the area as soon as practical and targeting any estuarine crocodile they find for removal. The rest of the Mareeba Shire remains in Zone E, a General Management Zone, in which any crocodile displaying dangerous behaviour will be targeted for removal.

Do you have a flair for art?

Mareeba Shire Council is looking for creative locals to get involved in their first ever Arts Festival which will be held at Arnold Park on October 7.

The event is the first of its kind to be held in Mareeba and councillor Lenore Wyatt said she thinks there is a big call for it here.

“It’s going to be a free community event that will not marginalise art,” she said.

“It’s something that’s going to bring everyone together.”

The plan is to have the park full of arts-themed stalls, events and activi-

ties with something for all ages.

The highlight of the day will be viewing a themed ‘chalk art’ masterpiece by international 3D pavement artist Jenny McCracken.

Jenny will spend the week leading up to the event creating her artwork, the likes of which have won awards all over the world.

She is also offering one lucky local artist the exciting opportunity to help her create it. Local visual artists are invited to apply to be Jenny’s ‘off-sider’ assisting her in creating the mural which will sit on the side of the Sports Hall.

and food vendors to operate a market stall at the festival, as well as entertainers.

“It’s new and exciting and we really think there is a big call for this now,” said Cr Wyatt.

“I feel like there’s been a real surge for things like this. After the mural at IGA (by local artist Tom Cosic) a lot of data came in about what positive effect this has had on the community and how much this stuff affects people, so we decided to do something more.”

Local painter Kerri Redding will also be at the festival giving visitors young and old an opportunity to have a go at creating a colourful masterpiece.

Kerri has raised almost

$20,000 for local charities with her fun splatter painting days.

“These are fun days, I don’t class them as art lessons,” she said.

“I like the idea that anyone can do it and it’s fun.”

Councillor Angela Toppin has also been working with school children in the region to get them involved.

“There will be more information about what will be on as we go along,” said Cr Wyatt. “But we’re really hoping that people will give it a go and come and get involved in something unique.

Anyone who wants to be part of the festival should apply before September 15 to Mareeba Shire Council.

Nominations are now open for the 2017 Tablelands Regional Council Garden Awards, and gardeners throughout the region are encouraged to nominate now for recognition of their outstanding home, community or workplace garden.

The competition is open to all gardeners young and old, including business owners and community groups.

Entry forms are available from Council Customer Service Centres and online at www.trc.qld.gov. au. Nominations close on Friday 29 September.

“The Tablelands has an enviable reputation for our unique environment and we are fortunate to have many beautiful gardens, both private and commercial, across our region,” Mayor Joe Paronella said.

“The Garden Awards are the perfect opportunity for anyone with green thumbs to showcase their passion for gardening, and I encourage anyone with a garden they take pride in to enter.”

Categories include young gardener (under 17 years), best home garden, new home garden (under two years), rural garden, community garden, commercial garden and vegetable garden.

All nominations must be from within the Tablelands Regional Council area.

No one expects to have a stroke at 49, especially one that nearly kills you. So when Lynn McKillop was told by doctors she would never walk again you would understand if she just gave up.

But for two hardy Far North Queenslanders that now call Mareeba home, that just wasn’t an option.

Lynn’s partner Bruce Hansford was celebrating his 60th birthday the day Lynn went to bed early with a headache. When he went to check on her later that evening he found her on the floor.

“It was extremely hot so I thought she was lying down because it was cooler or something but then I saw her eyes and realised something was wrong,” he said remembering the day it happened 12 years ago.

At the time the couple were living in Karumba and working in the marine industry. Lynn was a qualified skipper, mum of two grown up girls and an active member of the community.

But after that day her life was changed forever.

“She nearly died,” said Bruce. “She lost her sight, hearing, speech, lost control of most of her organs and everything, was paralysed down the right side.

It was about two weeks before she knew what was going on.”

Lynn was driven 75km from Karumba to Normanton Hospital overnight at Bruce’s insistence before being airlifted to Mt Isa. “That time factor caused more damage,” said Bruce.

“But when you live in remote areas that’s one of the risks you take when something happens.”

Getting to the hospital should have meant the start of Lynn’s recovery, but Bruce quickly found out that due to budget constraints and massive under-

staffing there was only one way Lynn was ever going to get well.

“The first prognosis was that she would never get out of bed,” said Bruce.

“They put her in rehab but the physio at Mt Isa Hospital is trying to look after 80 patients. She can only give them about 30 minutes each.”

So Bruce learnt the techniques himself and researched all he could about strokes and the path to recovery. For six months he sat by Lynn’s side in hospital from morning to night massaging her muscles to get them working again.

He washed and fed her and got her to her physio appointments taking over manually when the physio had to move on to someone else. When he found out that hydro therapy would be ideal for Lynn and there was no pool at the hospital, he would drive her to the nearest public pool for daily water sessions.

“I put a mask, snorkel and fins on her and had her snorkelling up and down – She’d kick with her good leg and the other leg would push her along,” said Bruce.

“After a stoke you have a time frame of about a year to get back whatever you have lost and then it starts to close over time but I found it goes much further than that. We were still having improvements years after. But it’s because you’ve got to put the work in.

“If I hadn’t got her in a pool swimming, I doubt she’d even be riding a bike or walking now. Other people we’d seen had strokes far less serious than hers, ended up in wheelchairs because they give up.”

After a few weeks at Mt Isa Lynn was transferred to Cairns Base Hospital where she continued her rehabilitation. Bruce got so good at helping her through the exercises he started to help the other patients too.

“Sometimes they were that flat out so they would just show me what to do and go on with that till they could get free with another patient,” said Bruce.

“And without the time and effort put in it doesn’t happen (she might never have walked again). A lot of people who have strokes, they are probably recoverable to a certain stage if they get the time and attention but it’s very, very difficult.”

Today Lynn has defied the odds and can walk with the aid of a stick, she has limited speech and limited use of one side of her body.

She has a scooter and everyday can be seen around the streets of Mareeba picking up rubbish.

“She found it was something she could do,” said Bruce.

“She takes her bucket and the pick up stick and to her that is her job. That’s the way she can contribute back to the community.”

But in the beginning the loss of independence and dramatic change to her quality of life was hard for Lynn to come to terms with. She cried every day for three years. And for Bruce it has been lifechanging also. Not that you’d ever hear either of them complaining.

“We’ve always had good humour and a very practical outlook on life and that has helped us tremendously,” said Bruce.

“You’ve got to focus on what you can do, not what you can’t do anymore or at what you’ve lost. You have to look at what you can do with what you’ve got.”

Bruce willingly took on the role of being Lynn’s full time carer whilst simultaneously holding down a part time job.

“You look after your own,” said Bruce. “But I had lived a life. I have lived a very, very full on life. So I can go ‘righto seen it done it’, now this is the problem and this is what we do.”

Celebrating 20 years of cake decorating The Mareeba Cake Decorators Association is celebrating 20 years this month and two of its current members have been there since the start.

Kylie Treen and her mum Daphne started the group back in 1997 and say that the art of cake decoration has changed considerably in that time.

“Things have changed majorly,” said Kylie who was the founding president of the group and is the president again this year.

“You used to have to create everything from scratch but now there are moulds and templates and everything is so much more advanced. It’s much easier.”

The group currently has 10 members who meet on the first Tuesday of the month at the CWA Hall in Mareeba. Members come from all over the Tablelands.

Four ladies from the

group recently returned from a trip to Perth where they represented Queensland in the National Cake Decorators Seminar.

“It’s a great opportunity to see what others are doing and get some tips,” said Kylie. “Some of the demonstrators were from all over the world.”

Most members of the group decorate cakes as a hobby and this year six members put eight cakes into the Atherton Show – all of which were placed.

“I was so proud of my girls,” said Kylie.

$150,000 in health grants

Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) is inviting health and community organisations across northern Queensland to apply for grants of up to $50,000 each to improve health out-

Kowrowa kids planting seeds for their future

Children in the community of Kowrowa near Kuranda have been participating in a world-wide event which symbolises the planting of fruit trees for a better future.

The ‘Kowrowa Children’s Fruit and Bushfood Orchard’ is a community activity that gets the children participating in the planting, watering and mulching of trees.

as they grow with them,” said Lisa from Seedsavers who helps to co-ordinate the activity.

“The trees are planted in areas that the community elders have allocated and assistance and support is given by members of the ‘rise’ program.”

The tree planting sessions are part of the ‘Regeneration Festival’ which began in New Mexico after the suicide of four youths from a small town called

Taos.

Now the community celebrates their young members through a four day festival which has since spread across the world. All fruit trees, compost and manure has been donated by various organic growers as well as Alba Self-Sufficiency, the Seedsavers Network, Kuranda Conservation and Troppo Propagation.

The Kowrowa children have been involved in the

Regeneration Festival for the past four years with different activities, including sending messages to the children of the world such as ‘we hope you are safe in your place’, ‘we hope you have healthy food and water’ and ‘take care of yourself and your kids’.

They also recently took part in the Cassowary section of the Cairns Festival Parade with paper mache cassowary masks and costumes.

Parliament supports Tully hydro

A shelved plan to reduce power costs across the region via the Millstream and Blunder Creeks is looking at being revived thanks to Shane Knuth gaining the backing of politicians in Parliament.

The Tully Millstream Hydro Electric Project began 20 years ago in a bid to supply 600 megawatts of power generating enough electricity for 100,000 homes. But support for the scheme waned when the area was classified by the World Heritage Committee and it has never been revived since.

The member for Dalrymple Mr Knuth said that now was the time for the scheme to be put into action as we are in the midst of an energy crisis.

“I’ve raised this seven times in Parliament over the last six years,” he said.

“There has always been a perception that this

project will be put on the backburner by politicians.

We’re sick and tired of seeing feasibility studies. The last thing we need is another five years of feasibility studies.”

Mr Knuth said the KAP is calling to put a halt to the $5billion Cross River Rail project and spend the money here instead.

“This project will mean more jobs and cheaper electricity and it is green electricity,” he said.

Most of the water for the project will come from Millstream and Blunder creeks, which come from the Southern Tablelands.

The energy would be generated from a 700-metre drop, which provides the power to support the operation of the turbines.

“I’m really happy to get the support of the house with my motion,” said Mr Knuth. “This paves the way for the future of electricity in our region.”

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Par-

onella supports the idea of the hydro-electric dam’s revival but said he hoped that other significant projects were not ignored in the meantime.

“Certainly any dam to be built on the Tablelands I support,” he said.

“But I certainly would be pushing for the irrigation project on the Herberton River and I very much support the Johnson diversion project – these all need to be looked at as well.”

Cr Paronella said he felt very strongly about the need to supply our region with more water and that he had his “fingers in the right pies” regarding pushing for the Johnson Diversion to go ahead.

“This is so important for our farmers,” he said.

“It’s not something that’s being looked at at the moment but with the election coming up, who knows.

“But I will certainly be rattling some tins, don’t you worry.”

New tourism officer at the helm in Kuranda

After seven years in the job Marc Sleeman has left his role as the Executive Officer at Tourism Kuranda to pursue a position in his home state of Victoria, leaving Kahlia Pepper to take over the reins.

Ms Pepper is no stranger to visitors in Kuranda – she was previously a sales executive at Skyrail and worked closely with Marc along the way.

Kicking off her new job last week, Ms Pepper said she was excited about bringing some new ideas to the region.

“Marc did a fantastic job and I want to ensure I can continue building on all his hard work,” she said.

“I have plans to bring more events to the region and I’m looking at other opportunities already.

“I think it will be great to have a different person in the role who can bring forward some new ideas.”

Kahlia has 11 years of experience in tourism, marketing and sales and a Bachelor of Business majoring in Marketing.

“Kuranda is a beautiful and unique destination with passionate tourism operators and businesses,” she said.

“I am looking forward to

being a part of this energetic team. Tourism Kuranda has a positive strategy that has yielded terrific results over recent years thanks to the dedicated Advisory Committee and, of course, the outgoing Executive Officer Marc Sleeman. It is important to build on this success by working together to ensure Kuranda is a “must visit” destination in Tropical North Queensland.

Great time for a big clean up Tablelands Regional Council is encouraging communities across the region to register for the 2017 Great Northern Clean Up weekend on 21/22 October 2017.

The Great Northern Clean Up is the perfect opportunity to identify and clear rubbish ‘hotspots’ because when the rubbish is gone, nature can carry on.

Mayor Joe Paronella is urging Tablelands communities to get involved in this great initiative created by the Clean Up Australia Day organisation.

Senator visits wind farm Senator Malcolm Roberts told a meeting of Lakeland residents on Sunday he was surprised the developers of a massive windfarm project would have advised them there was no government requirement to conduct public notification or consider public submissions. The One Nation Senator visited Lakeland at the request of landowner Joy Marriott, one of the closest neighbours to be affected by 35 towers, up to 240 metres high.

In a letter from the proponents, Windlab, residents were told the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning is currently assessing the development application

for the wind farm.

“They have confirmed with us that there is no requirement to conduct public notification or consider public submissions. However, you can still make a submission by writing to the Department ,”wrote spokesman, Joshua Petrass.

Ms Marriott said the company was not required to undertake an Environmental Impact Study, “yet when a Lakeland business applied to extend its accommodation facilities the council insisted on a very strict application process that involved an EIS and planning that will cost a lot of money.

“I had to do a similar process when I started

my now nearly completed caravan park and it cost a lot of money, so I can’t see how a southern developer can come to Lakeland with a $200 million wind farm and not do an EIS or take any notice of objections.”

Wind-generated power did not receive top marks from Senator Roberts.

He warned that the huge increase in power prices across the State was caused in part by subsidised renewable power.

A mining engineer by profession, Senator Roberts warned that wind power was not all it was made out to be.

“My research shows that wind power destroys the security of electricity

supply because it is asynchronous (not occurring at the same time) and it destabilises electricity supply,” Senator Roberts explained.

“It relies on subsidies from taxpayers and can be harmful to physical and mental health as well as harm the environment, but it can also destroy property values.

“Wind towers are not aesthetically pleasant, but worst of all wind farms are based on a lie-Australian industry is not affecting the global climate.”

In the letter, Mr Petrass said Windlab seeks to partner with the community to bring economic development and investment in renewable energy.

Is Quaid Dam a key to opening up prosperity?

Quaid Dam (aka Southedge Dam) holds back the 190,000 Megalitre waters of Lake Mitchell on the headwaters of the Mitchell River. Constructed at the end of the heydays of dam building in Queensland, this privately-owned dam could well spell an economic boom for the Mareeba Shire.

Already the dam provides an obvious and massive tourist opportunity for viewing the wildlife enjoying the watery refuge of the dam throughout the driest of years. It truly is an environmental gem. Such great environmental benefits come from building dams in seasonally dry landscapes, but have you driven by and thought what a great place it would be to go fishing, or to buy a plot of land for a place to raise your family or retirement to? What a great place for a village to be grown in a relationship with private investment and in concert with the Mareeba Shire Council.

Whilst years ago there was a lot of community angst about the Dam, I don’t think anyone would really want it pulled down. So, then I say let’s look at this great resources for economic and social development and start a conversation with

the landowners about bringing the environment and community together in what would really be a spectacular place to live and a remarkable place for the family to play.

In this modern era, there is sure to be a shared interest in making an equally shared and sensitive new plan for the waters and lands of Lake Mitchell. Think of the communities around lake Tinaroo – but designed in such a way that any reasonable environmentalist and developer can be equally challenged and rewarded in a partnership to build a place that flagships a genuine new way of living in a beautiful man-made environment. Lake Mitchell after all is not natural.

I am happy to discuss this potential opportunity with anyone who wants to make the most of a largely unused and unappreciated place so close to Mareeba.

If the southern bureaucrats and southern pollies needed a plausible reason for the release of such water they could say it was for the Barron Gorge Power Station, which incidentally only operates during peak hours of electricity usage.

All that said it is just another kick in the guts for our hard working farmers in the Tinaroo Irrigation Area, after being on reduced allocation allowances now for sometime. To add further hardship farmers are compelled to pay $45 per megalitre for every megalitre in their allocation allowance whether DNR can supply their allocation or not under the disguise of the cost of running the irrigation scheme.

How would you like to go to the fuel station and pay for 100 litres of fuel, but only receive your allocation of 60 litres?

The Regional Operation Plan (ROP) which DNR operates needs a thorough and proper overhaul to meet the realistic needs of all stake holders. The water in Tinaroo Dam, or should I say the water that is not in Tinaroo Dam, is an over allocated resource.

The struggling inept Labor Palaszcuk government needs to front up and consider the damage it is doing to the confidence of all stakeholders, the lack

of productivity from our rural sector and the compounding financial implications that reverberate right through the community from the primary producer, employees and all businesses in Mareeba and surrounds. Front up and revise the ROP now, it is obviously out of date an unrealistic.

School Firefigting program needs to be reinstated Through a recent conversation it was brought to my attention that the ‘Certificate Two in Fire Fighting Operations and Community Safety’ has now been withdrawn from local schools.

This program has been operating for the past seven years and has been a great success and considering many of our students live on rural and remote communities it’s almost a necessity for them to learn. The past students who have completed the course have come out with enthusiasm and experience.

With a workforce of aging firefighters, doesn’t this program ignite interest in the younger generation to become volunteers in the Rural Fire Fighting Brigade and become potential leaders?

I am urging the Qld Government to seriously look at funding and to reinstate this program for our rural schools.

Nicola Sharples and Krystal Foxwell-Tyter are aiming to ride 1000km throughout October to raise $1000 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.

1000km bike ride for charity In a bid to get fit and raise money for a good cause, Nicola Sharples and Krystal Foxwell-Tyter will be riding 1000km in October as part of the Great Cycle Challenge.

Team ‘Wheelolicious’ are aiming to raise $1000 for the Children’s Medical Research Institute and the girls have already almost reached their goal.

“We wanted to do it health-wise and this is also for a great cause,” said Nicola.

“The stats are terrible for kids with cancer – we really wanted to do something worthwhile.”

Neither girls are keen cyclists so the challenge to get fit and ready for the October 1 start date has been even greater.

“We have done a bit of riding before and a triathlon that was disaster!” said

“We try to cater from teenagers through to retirees.”

Mr Cater praised the “good diversity of businesses across Mareeba”, which made the town ideally placed to capitalise on a growing visitor market.

“People have a choice of products and services here without having to leave town and I think that’s what makes Mareeba what it is,” he said. “It’s very strong and stable with its industry and business sectors. All that adds to people staying here longer and the longer they stay here, the more money they want to spend.”

It’s not hard to see why Kianna Darcey was chosen as the Tablelands’ first ever ‘Emerging Ambassador’ – level-headed, mature and passionate about helping young people in the community, the 20 year old Ravenshoe girl reveals she once suffered from depression and anxiety and wants to use her role to help others going through the same thing.

Kianna was chosen from eight girls at the Maize Festival on August 26 through the ‘Ambassador Program’ which was created to replace the previous ‘Maize Queen’ pageant which had been as much a part of Atherton as the festival itself. Not everyone was thrilled with the changes but the new committee was determined to modernise

the event and it looks like it paid off.

“I think the idea of the Maize Queen would have put me off from entering,” said Kianna.

“But this really got my attention. I looked at the events you had to go to – the self development aspect to it all and I thought this is an amazing opportunity.

“This is more developing you on the business side rather than being based on whether you are pretty enough or have enough money.”

Kianna grew up on a dairy farm in Ravenshoe.

She was a school captain and took part in the town’s Torimba Festival and is studying hairdressing in Cairns.

One of her biggest passions is to inspire belief and confidence in young people and she plans to use her position as the 2017 Emerging

Ambassador to do that.

“A big thing that is huge in our community is depression and anxiety among young people,” she said.

“When I left school I suffered with depression and anxiety and had to learn the tools to believe in myself. In schools there is not that focus - it’s all about exams and grades etc.”

Kianna is already working on plans to use her role constructively.

“One of the events we took part in leading up to the festival was on building your inner strength,” said Kianna.

“I thought it was so good and I would love to set up some sort of program where you go into schools and have an event where you show young people how many inspiring community members we have so they can see how far they have come.

“I really want to make a positive change.”

Kianna says that like her, many young people leave school and feel ‘lost’ – unsure of where to turn to next.

“When you come out of school it’s really hard to know what you want to do,” she said.

“Everyone always feels a bit lost. I think there’s an opportunity to give young people the belief that they can go for their dream job and give them the confidence to do that.”

In the lead up to the festival the girls got to take part in events and were given opportunities to engage within the community. Kianna even developed a love for public speaking.

“We went to Carinya and had Morning Tea with the elderly an we went to Rocky Creek on VP Day

to give a little talk each,” she said.

“For most people public speaking is something everyone hates but if you overcome your fear it can be really enjoyable.”

Kianna and Ashlyn Condullus who became the Young and Charity Ambassador – will now look forward to a year of events and opportunities, representing their titles and helping the community.

The STEPS Program Brain Injury Group recently held an event to raise more awareness about brain injuries.

The group met at LoveLee Cooking and invited passers-by to stop and find out more about what they do. Stockdog herding workshops

Later this month the Koolie Club of Australia will be hosting two three day stockdog herding workshops in Mareeba – and you don’t need to be a property owner to attend.

The workshops are for dogs of all ages that show an interest in stock and organisers say that many herding breeds really enjoy the opportunity to put their instincts to use.

“The school caters for young un-started pups, dogs that are already working but just need some fine tuning or if you own a suburban herding breed of dog that likes to chase other dogs, the chooks or round up the kids or is your dog just bored and running amok, this workshop will give your dog an outlet for their natural instincts,” said Kylie Willson from the Koolie Club of Australia.

“During the workshop you will learn why your herding bred dog behaves the way he/she does.”

The workshops will be hosted by trainer Tony Cock who has been involved with working dogs his whole life and understands the importance of a well-trained dog. He currently works on a station in Central Queensland working with a team of dogs on a daily basis.

their handler,” said Mrs Willson. “Some dogs even spend days, weeks or even months mustering or droving large herds of cattle or sheep over 1000’s of kilometres. They must be independent workers/thinkers to enable them to do the job they are bred for.”

You don’t have to have a dog to attend to workshops either as one can be provided for you.

“This way everyone has the chance to equip themselves with the information, knowledge and experience the school is offering,” said Mrs Willson.

“You will experience working with your dog as a team. You will learn how to “read” your stock, this will help you understand where your dog needs to be whilst working stock.”

SUGAR REPORTS MOSSMAN MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 12 Mossman Mill plant availability was below budget for Week 12 along with the weekly throughput. The factory processed 35,271 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 323 tonnes/hour.

The major issues for the week occurred around boilers with failed tubes that ruptured the tippler hydraulics on which a shaft failed, and the repair of a leaking juice tank. Some minor stops occurred on the pan floor for high stock levels as the CCS continues to climb.

Other down time for the week was for the chain failure on No. 1 Mill pressure feeder and some boiler water level control trips. Pol recovery remains on target.

Halfway point for cane crushing

With the Far North Queensland cane crush nearing the half-way mark, MSF Sugar is keeping a close watch on the performance of various cane varieties through its three northern mills.

At the MSF Sugarowned South Johnstone, Mulgrave and Tableland mills, a number of traditional and new cane varieties are performing strongly this season. Figures show that Q208 – a staple of the industry – currently accounts for the majority of cane crushed to date at all three mills. However, there are some differences starting to appear across the milling locations.

At the Tableland Mill, Mulgrave Cane Productivity Coordinator Matt Hession said KQ228 was dominating the crush, with the variety producing above average cane yield and sugar content when harvested early in the season.

“KQ228 has consistently performed well on the Tablelands season to season, where water requirements can be managed and suckering minimised,” Mr Hession said.

“The variety has also shown promise along the far north coast, with smaller quantities of KQ228 being processed and cane yields have been very good with CCS around 0.6.”

An opportunity has become available at Springmount Waste Management Facility (SWMF) for an experienced Administration Clerk.

This role will involve all administrative duties associated to operations of the Springmount Waste Facility and Woree Recovery Centre in Cairns. The position will be based at our Springmount office, with some minor work required in Cairns at times.

Duties will include but not be limited to inputting of accounts, payroll, daily plant tracking, record keeping, systems control and OHS documentation.

The successful applicant must be able to work unsupervised, be self motivated, and have solid time management skills, good knowledge of computer software programs, Microsoft Word and Excel.

This will be a 35 hour, 5 days a week position, salary will be negotiated with successful applicant based upon relative experience.

End of season celebrations The 2017 Hockey season has seen both struggles and success for our little club.

We’ve struggled with an ant invasion and a very dry season meaning lots of extra maintenance on our fields – even a family of snakes moved in at one stage.

If the struggles with nature were not enough, we’ve fought to maintain strong numbers in our junior division, meaning we‘ve had to once again adopt a mixed gender comp which has it pros and cons.

Then our men’s competition, which got off to a great start with a regional comp consisting of two Atherton teams and two Cairns teams competing both here in Atherton and alternatively in Cairns, but unfortunately the momentum could not be maintained.

To combat the struggles our successes were many… Another

successful Summer 6’s competition with a 10 team competition across two divisions.

Then straight into our main season starting in March saw our second year of the Tomahawks competing in the senior school Cairns competitions on a Friday evening with a total of three teams representing us with great spirit and doing us proud.

All this can’t happen without our coaches, managers, parents and our generous sponsors who jumped on board this year. You are the ones who have made this possible for our kids, so thank you.

We sent a U18 girls’ team to Melbourne for a first ever interstate tour in January, then in April a team of over 35 ladies competed in the World Master in New Zealand representing Atherton as North Oz Magic.

We also had players compete in the Great

Barrier Reef Masters Games in Cairns as well.

Our U18 Men competed in Toowoomba in June and our Ladies Vets in Gympie in July in State Championships and we had many of our junior players compete with Cairns teams where we were not able to enter a team.

An excellent representation in Peninsula this year in both U12 and U19, with a total of 13 kids chosen in teams or as shadows.

It’s been a close competition all year across all age divisions, with just points separating many teams on the ladder by the end of fixtures.

Good luck to everyone competing in the grand finals – play hard but most importantly play fair.

Our grand final this Saturday September 9, starts with our youngest members Minkies (under 10’s) at 9am, and progresses in age throughout the day, finishing with a huge post final celebration into the evening.

The Mareeba Tennis Club will host a ‘Run and Roll’ tennis event on Wednesday September 13.

The event is part of a week of activities organised by the Freshwater Tennis Club to run in conjunction with National disability week.

The event aims to introduce wheelchair tennis to the Tablelands region enabling participants to network and discover opportunities through participation.

Run and roll tennis features both able bodied and disabled athletes teaming up and playing doubles against a similar team with modified rules.

EXPRESS sPORT The Gladiators are hoping for a win this weekend after going down 58-16 on Sunday in their first semi-final.

Gators’ last chance to fight for grand final spot It was a tough call asking a team with so many players injured to go up against the best performing side of the season, but as usual the Gladiators put their best foot forward against Innisfail on Sunday in a bid to make it to the Grand Final.

But it wasn't meant to be and coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said the game was won by the opposition in the first four minutes.

“It was a tough loss,” he said.

“They basically just played a lot better than us.”

At half time the Gators were down 6 to Innisfail's 34 and at full time they had lost 16 to Innisfail’s 58.

But with so many of the Mareeba side’s best players nursing injuries, beating a team which has only lost one game all season was never going to be easy.

“It wasn't the ideal prep that we wanted,” said In-

gebrigtsen.

“But the boys are always confident and we went out there and did our best.”

This weekend they will get their last chance at a spot in the final when they play Yarrabah on Sunday again at Barlow Park. But coach Ingebrigtsen said it is “unlikely” that many of his best players will have recovered from injury enough to play.

“We're going to re-

group at training this week and go from there,” he said.

“Unfortunately we got another four injuries (in the game against Innisfail). We're going through a really rough stage with injuries but we’ll do our best and see how we go.”

The winner from this weekend's game will play Innisfail in the Grand Final on September 16.

Big weekend ahead for Bulls Mareeba Bulls Reserve team players run into celebrate with keeper Ronnie Leporati after winning their first semi on Sunday.

After the first weekend of the FNQ Football finals series, the pressure valve has not let up with up to seven different Mareeba divisions still alive and all vying for a spot in the grand final. The teams will now play off in the major semi-finals to be held this weekend.

The action started on Friday night with the Mareeba Bulls Second Division boys hosting the Atherton Eagles in the elimination semifinal. The home side did not disappoint the large home crowd taking out the match 2-1.

The Bulls played some outstanding football for majority of the match, but as ever the Atherton boys never gave in and looked to make a comeback when they reduced the score to 2-1 with about 20 minutes to go.

But the Bulls held on for a tense win to stay alive and will now host the Marlin Coast Rangers this Friday night in the major semi-final in Mareeba.

Midfielder Eric Iacutone and attacker Christian Mukadi scored the two goals for the Bulls.

On Sunday at Stratford the excitement continued with the Reserve boys fighting out a thrilling 2-2 draw over 120 minutes of football.

After extra time, the match went into penalties and the Bulls kept their nerve to seal

the shoot out 4-2. With proof you can never keep an old Bull down, club verterans saved the day for the reserves with Dennis Allen scoring two goals and Ronnie leporati saving the first penalty.

The the Bulls now face the Stratford Dolphins in their major semi-final.

future for the Mareeba United Football Club, five junior sides will also be playing off this weekend in major semi-finals in Cairns.

The U12 divisions two sides, the U13 boys, U14 boys and U15 boys are all alive and will be looking for grand final berths this weekend.
