ATEPAYERS came in solid numbers as the Tablelands Regional Council opened a new chapter of local government last Thursday morning.

Mayor Joe Paronella and his fresh team of councillors were officially sworn in to office, with delight and hope engulfing the room.

Among the team of new councillors was Samantha Banks, who had only just been declared the winner of Division 4 less than 24 hours before the ceremony.

All eyes were on Mayor Paronella as he ad-

dressed the room for the first time. In the gallery, heads lifted.

“Ladies and gentleman, it is wonderful to see so many of you here,” he said. “I’m honoured and humbled to take on the role as Mayor for the Tablelands region and I thank you for your support.

“Today, my fellow councillors and I commence a journey of a new era of regional governance and leadership.

“This will be formed through community engagement and consultation – and in line with rational, transparent and accountable decision making.”

Prue Mellor will assist in ‘demystifying’ elements of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

THE Tablelands is set to host a series of information sessions in coming weeks, to offer support for carers and patients with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Facilitated by astute clinical nurse specialist, Prue Mellor (of Age Concern), the sessions are designed to ‘demystify’ both conditions and attempt to establish support groups in the region.

Ms Mellor is a registered nurse and holds two Masters Degrees in clinical nursing. She has also spent time in the US at the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Phoenix, AZ (Arizona).

She has returned to Australia with a wealth of experience and material from this trip will be shared in a bid to help those who need it.

Mareeba will host two sessions (April 19, 2pm

and 7pm at St John’s Community Care – 5 Quill Street) along with Malanda (April 20, 2pm and 7pm at OzCare Malanda, Turnbull Road, Malanda).

Ms Mellor said she was keen for all members of the community to attend the event, as many in our community are impacted by those who are battling either condition.

“It’s very important to preserve relationships with those who have dementia,” she said. “It’s very important to make their end memories good as well.”

Ms Mellor added: “60 per cent of carers will receive a significant illness (often relating to stress) prior to their loved one passing away.”

School’s 50th anniversary

St Anthony’s Principal Brad Williams is excited about the 50th anniversary celebrations in August.

DIMBULAH will host a very special weekend in late August (Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28), when St Anthony’s School will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Saturday evening will see the school community enjoy a hearty dinner at the Dimbulah Town Hall with friends and guests, before a dance and entertainment from band ‘Careless’ will follow.

The following day, the major formalities of the event will commence from 9am. Those in attendance will be able to sign the official guestbook, attend a special 10am mass and enjoy plenty of entertainment and memorabilia options.

St Anthony’s principal Brad Williams said it would be a great opportunity for many to reconnect with friendly faces.

“Throughout the town, the event appears to be at the forefront of many people’s thinking and planning,” he said.

“It’ll be a great opportunity to help reconnect people back together and to see many friendly faces.”

The sheer enormity of the anniversary celebrations will mean that St Anthony’s will not be hosting their annual Christmas Fair in 2016.

Operations of the Fair have been facilitated by the school’s ‘Parents and Friends’ (P and F) organisation, who work closely with school staff throughout the year.

But due to the two events being scheduled so close, it was decided to place further emphasis on having a bumper anniversary weekend – with the P and F maintaining their critical involvement in school events.

Mr Williams added that the school had commenced preliminary discussions regarding the selection of a Christmas event for the end of the year.

Enterprising venture

By Justin Fris AN important joint venture is set to commence from July 1, between the Mareeba Heritage Centre and the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce.

Both organisations play an integral role in our community for several reasons, but above all, they are committed to promoting Mareeba as a wonderful place to live, visit and conduct business.

Both organisations will operate out of the same facility (Heritage Centre) and aim to provide a central hub for business and tourism within Mareeba and surrounding district.

Ron Blundell (chair of the Heritage Centre) and Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro are optimistic about the venture’s potential.

“This venture will bring a higher level of professionalism into both organisations,” Mr Moro said.

“It will increase the professionalism with a more commercial focus.”

The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce will have an office which will operate out of the Heritage Centre – adding another dimension into an already impressive ‘community hub’.

Mr Blundell said that from July 1, a new management position would be created to oversee the transition of the partnership.

Currently, Heritage Centre staff and volunteers are under the operation of Mareeba Shire Council. The new manager will be guided by the present Heritage Centre committee.

Mr Blundell added that volunteers would remain an integral part of the facility, but both parties would work towards ushering in a new era of activity for the facility.

“From the first day that we built this, I’ve always dreamed that the likes of the Chamber would be based here,” he said.

“And what I’d really like is – and I’ve started enquiries – with the Arts Society, Historical Society, the Chamber to unite into a Mareeba information, cultural and heritage Hub.” Both organisations are in the process of drafting a job description for the managerial position, with the hope that the successful applicant can work cohesively with all local stakeholders in attaining positive outcomes.

“We both have common goals,” Mr Moro said. “Last year, the MSC asked the Chamber to get more involved with tourism and the Heritage Centre is a perfect location to do this.

“We hope the joint venture will help us to be more efficient and deliver better outcomes for Mareeba.”

By Justin Fris NEWLY elected councillors are being sworn in to office across Queensland, taking in a wealth of new information during every waking hour.

Former Atherton Shire Mayor Jim Chapman believes that both councillors and ratepayers can benefit from a two-way professional relationship - built on respect.

“The public do need to understand that many of the councillors are new to local government,” he said. “They need to learn what it’s all about. Immediately, they will be faced

with setting the new fees and charges and the budget in the next three months; which will keep them fairly occupied.”

With a heavy workload and needing to learn the parameters of their new employment, Mr Chapman said ratepayers could assist councillors during this transitional process, which could benefit the community.

“There are only so many waking hours in a day for every councillor,” Mr Chapman said.

“It is important for ratepayers to consider: What can you do for your community? If the public can assist in the community (for exam-

The Tablelands is still reeling from the tragic passing of Dr Mark Bestmann, who was a revered and indispensable member of the Mareeba community.

The primary aim of the evening is for industry professionals to deliver realistic and practical advice for those battling a mental illness.

presentations from key industry personnel.

Carl Portella – who organised the information night – said the presenters were highly knowledgable in their respective fields.

“Dr Vered Gordon is a researcher with the Black Dog Institute,” Mr Portella said. “She’s flying up from Sydney, specifically for the night.

“She actually worked together with Mark before his death. We also have Janell Wilkie, who is a local psychologist, whom a lot of people know.

“There will also be Sarah Black – she will be the first ‘go to’ person at the Mareeba Hospital – for people who may think they have depression. From then on, she will point them in the right direction to get the help that they need.

“We’ll also have Dr Grant Manypeney, who’s a local GP and was one of Mark’s colleagues in the clinic.

He knows a lot about depression and will give the GP’s perspective.

“Additionally, Geoff Crofts from Australian Rotary Health will provide insight into depression-based research - and Mark’s wife Margie will be wrapping up the evening with some important local information.”

Mr Portella said that Dr Bestmann was the ‘go to’ person for patients dealing with depression and anxiety and was looked up to as a shining light.

“Mark was a very active member of the community,” he said. “Through sport, he and his family were involved with cricket, golf and other sports.

“It is a shame that it took the passing of Mark to bring this illness out into the open, because the stigma around depression and anxiety (especially amongst the male members of the community) is very daunting – and in some ways, a big ‘no no’.

“There are some who may feel ‘un-manly’ by coming out and admitting that they may have a problem – and the illness itself is actually a sickness that can be treated in numerous ways.

“The whole idea of the information night – and it is an information night, not a forum – is it’s a night where people in the community who may have been touched by

The new facility, to be constructed on the site of the existing toilet block is estimated to be completed within six weeks.

Eager to get things moving, Mayor Paronella and councillor Bronwyn Voyce have already held discussions with the Tolga Lions Club and the Tolga Historic Society about replanting a new tree and reinstalling the original plaque.

"It's important for Council to work with the community as much as possible to revitalise our small towns so we can keep businesses open, services available and tourists coming,” said Cr Voyce.

Works will commence on the removal and replacement of the public toilet facility in Main Street, Tolga, today (April 6), following extensive damage caused when a century old Fig Tree came down on it late last year.

Newly elected Mayor Joe Paronella indicated his desire for Council to provide improved facilities when replacements are necessary, whenever possible.

“I’m pleased to announce that the new toilet facility will include a wheelchair accessible toilet, ramp and parking space,” said Mayor Paronella.

Four locals are also going to give us an insight into their journeys, having battled depression.

Along with receiving participation from the industry presenters, Mr Portella has corresponded with Health Minister Cameron Dick, who has outlined that he will do whatever he can to help with supporting those with mental illness in our region.

“We approached the Minister after Mark’s death just to see what could be done in the community,” Mr Portella said.

Mental illness can affect anyone – the community is encouraged to come along and learn more about it with an aim for better outcomes for all involved.

Northern infrastructure facility will now be based in Cairns

By Justin Fris MAREEBA is home to some of the finest conditions in the world for ballooning. With its dry climate and favourable conditions, it can make for a pleasant outing for tourists.

Additionally, ballooning plays an important role for local tourism, as it gives thousands of tourists a glimpse of the Tablelands in all of its glory.

However, as with most things in life, there are two sides to every situation. Some residents in the region would prefer for balloons to avoid their piece of paradise.

One of these residents is Dennis Richardson. Happily retired with his wife, Mr Richardson is concerned with how close balloons drift over his property while in the privacy of his own home.

“I’ve taken numerous photos of balloons flying just metres above the house next door, over our house and then seeing them land in Shaban Park down the road,” he said.

“They have to sometimes put on their burners to clear rooves and some of the horses sometimes get spooked when they fly overhead.

“The balloon operators in all fairness have both offered to come around and de-spook our horses. To do this, they bring around their balloon baskets and drive them into the paddock. They bring the horses up close and then light the burners full ball, until the horses get used to the sound.”

Optimal flying conditions for ballooning occur during sunrise, which means balloons can be seen over Mareeba between 6 and 7am.

Mr Richardson said he had been startled on a few occasions around his house, when he was unaware of a balloon hovering near or over his house.

In a bid to achieve an equitable outcome for all parties, Mr Richardson has met with operators of both local balloon operators (Hot Air and Raging Thunder), along with Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore.

companies in order to gain insight into how much is done to avoid houses who don’t wish to be disturbed by balloons.

Both operators are provided with a comprehensive map tracking system in their respective balloons. The data provided highlights in red which properties have indicated they don’t want balloons near their house.

Landowners can also advise both operators if they have no qualms entering into a landing agreement with the operators.

In these situations, the landowner is compensated (per landing on their property) or given free tickets for a balloon ride.

Landowners who don’t wish to be disturbed can also advise the operators of their preference. The operators then endeavour to take these factors into account when planning their flight path.

In the past year alone, there have been 1541 recorded landings within the Mareeba region by one of the two operators.

Of these 1541 instances, only on 60 occasions (at time of print), had a balloon landed within a 3-5km radius of the Shaban Park region. Naturally it is important for us to remember that balloons navigate by wind. Pilots take conditions and their flight map into account and endeavour to minimise any potential grievance.

Mr Richardson said he had personally been unhappy with the response from several stakeholders on the matter and said he would continue to lobby for his family’s privacy at home.

Mayor Gilmore said that ballooning played an important role for tourism in Mareeba, with it also employing many local families.

One of the operators has a Mareeba-based office, which employs 20 locals.

Relevant stakeholders (including the Civil Aviation Safety Authority) said they were satisfied with how the current landing and safety procedures are being carried out in the Mareeba township.

THE Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) office will be based in Cairns, after initial fears that it would be based in Brisbane.

Premier Annastasia Palazczuk had initially remarked that the facility should be located in Brisbane – a comment which didn’t go down well in the Far North.

However, after intense lobbying from the KAP crossbenchers and LNP Opposition, common sense prevailed.

One of many local stakeholders who welcomed the announcement was the Federal Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch.

“Locating the office in Cairns makes absolute sense,” he said. “Our region is a hub for agriculture, tourism, education and energy resources, coupled with a sizeable population base.

“We also have outstanding connectivity – Cairns International Airport recently rated 13th in the world’s top 20 best-performing small airports and we have direct flights to almost every capital city in Australia as well as excellent connections internationally.

“Cairns also sits at the intersection of the two great regions of global economic and population growth – Asia and the tropics – and, like much of northern Australia, is a gateway to Asia. I’m certainly looking forward to the establishment of the office of the NAIF here in Cairns.”

Plans for the facility are in line with the Northern Australia White Paper, which was released last year.

Turnbull threatens ‘Double Dissolution’ election

HOLD onto your hats, Tablelands residents. We may be going to the election ballot box again on July 2.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull issued a stern warning recently, informing the nation that he had recalled both Houses (Representatives and Senate) for extra sittings, which will commence on April 18.

Mr Turnbull said he would also bring the release of the Federal Budget forward by a week (to April 11).

Frustrated by the Senate having blocked contentious industrial relations legislation, Mr Turnbull said he would call a ‘Double Dissolution’ election if both items were blocked again.

“The time has come for the Senate to recognise its responsibilities and help harness our economic plans – rather than standing in the way,” he said. “The construction industry is vital to the Australian economy.

“The additional costs of construction

in this country – due to the frequency of industrial disputes and standover tactics by militant unions – are a serious ‘handbrake’ on economic growth.

“When the Australian Building and Construction Commission was in force, productivity in the sector grew by 20 per cent.

“Since it has been abolished, productivity has flat lined. The days lost to industrial disputes have increased by 34 per cent.”

The Prime Minister added: “Labor, the Greens and some members of the crossbench have been put under enormous pressure to oppose the re-establishment of the commission.

“Not least, because the construction union have been big supporters of their political machines.

“I make no apology in interrupting senators’ seven week break, to bring them back and deal with this legislation.

“This is an opportunity for the Senate to do its job, by legislating, rather than filler busting.”

“My mum and my elderly aunt (who flew up from Brisbane) helped man the booths for me in Malanda and Atherton, which was really supportive.”

After a busy day of campaigning on Saturday, Samantha headed for home with knowledge that she had polled strongly in Yungaburra.

“I then scrutinised on Sunday morning and after the Atherton pre poll votes came through, I led Michael by one vote,” she said.

“I’ve got a lot to learn over the coming weeks in a bid to be brought up to speed with local government.

“So far, all the interactions I’ve had with the Mayor and fellow councillors have been open and frank.”

Mr Lawrence was magnanimous in his thoughts on the result.

‘The decision to run for local government was a significant one and I have thoroughly enjoyed the entire campaign process,” he said.

“The voting has been close from the first day and it has been a wonderful journey that I would do again.

“After an extremely close contest and recount I offered Samantha my sincere congratulations, and also to Bernie for sharing the journey.”

SAMANTHA Banks will represent Division 4 of the Tablelands Regional Council, after defeating Michael Lawrence by four votes last Wednesday.

After a recount saw them tied, Samantha revealed the most astonishing turn of events which resulted in her victory.

“The last of the postal votes came in and Michael and I were tied,” she said.

“We then found three preference votes which hadn’t been counted, which were votes for me. Along with that, we found a postal vote which hadn’t been check counted, which also luckily went my way.”

Samantha said she enjoyed the campaign and formed a positive alliance with Mr Lawrence and fellow candidate, Bernie Wilce.

“There was absolutely no animosity in the campaign and all candidates were not directly competing against each other,” she said.

“It was suggested that whoever was successful would go back and meet with the other two candidates to discuss and work through local issues - which I will do in the coming weeks.”

A successful businesswoman,

Samantha is also extremely community-minded. Amongst her several commitments, she has worked with the Malanda Chamber of Commerce and the Yungaburra State School P and C. She decided to run for council after learning of its dysfunctional nature at the time – and was also reliably informed that external parties had issues passing through legislation to the councillors.

“The campaign was a huge learning experience,” she said. “People were very respectful throughout the campaign.

“It was akin to a very lengthy job application. As in many ways, the

Gallery pays tribute to Councillors On behalf of my friends in the gallery at Tableland Regional Council meetings (and all ratepayers), I wish to pay tribute to three councillors who have served the Atherton Tablelands fairly and honestly for the past term of TRC. My presence at many meetings made me realise how valuable the strong efforts of Rod Marti, Shaaron Linwood, and Marjorie Pagani have been in fighting for the betterment of the whole community.

Your presence at meetings will be sadly missed. Please remember the good you did for all of us will live on in our hearts - and our Shire’s future.

Thank you and good luck ahead for each of you. You are deserving of a tribute.

Labor putting hand brake on growth In the late 1990’s, Labor TWS and WWF began the task of locking up Cape York with the ill-conceived “East Coast Wilderness Zone” which would have seen half the Cape turned into a national park. Then came the Wild Rivers Act which meant large areas could not be used by landholders and traditional owners for economic benefit. The LNP was in the process of getting rid of ‘Wild Rivers’ and replace it with a community based assessment process to protect the natural features of the Cape.

riculture to go ahead in the north.

CYPLUS identified 1.8 million hectares of arable land for cropping in Cape York - much of which is controlled by indigenous people.

This creates an opportunity for the people of Cook to participate in a boom in world agriculture that will produce over $300 million per annum and over 1250 jobs. No more banana farms, no cropping and no fruit and vegetable farms.

The Government’s own data shows that clearing for agriculture cannot keep up with the speed regrowth that is covering the land.

The Federal Government’s northern development policy will come to a grinding halt and the opportunity the north has been waiting for in agriculture and infrastructure for generations will be over before it begins because of Labor’s draconian law. All for a few Greens preference votes that got Jackie Trad elected.

The State Member Billy Gordon at first indicated he would listen to the people and not support the Bill. However when it was introduced, he followed Labor and voted against the interest of his electorate just to protect his $200,000 per annum job.

Electorates have short memories As one who has had a much closer association than most with candidates, parties and hopefuls at election time for a prolonged period dating back to November 25, 1963, some things never cease to truly amaze me.

Firstly, the fickle nature of the electorate at any given time for any given reason.

venient loss of memory that exists in some electoral hopefuls – and more importantly, those people who are charged with the responsibility to vote.

Thirdly, the power of the donkey vote and the mindless informal vote numbers in any election.

Lastly the ability of some electoral candidates to rely on the alarmingly weak memory or process of recall of voters.

The electorate in the now re-established Mareeba Shire clearly have forgotten that the unopposed Mareeba Shire Mayor is the same man who was Mayor of the first Tableland Regional Council. And the one who, (because it suited him at the time I suppose) was vehemently against de-amalgamation of the Mareeba Shire area from the ensuing farce that became the Tablelands Regional Council since 2008.

Let’s not forget that for the current Mareeba Shire to get to this stage of strength, we also remember those people who were ridiculed and ostracised by the “powers that be” at the time, because of their dedicated quest to de-amalgamate from a local government fiasco and re-establish Mareeba Shire as an entity in its own right.

Those undaunted few who began the hard fight for de-amalgamation of Mareeba Shire seem to have been largely forgotten in your accolades of electoral glory published in The Express, March 22 issue.

I believe we must “dip our lids” to all the vision, hard work and hard decisions that have seen Mareeba Shire Council progress from the former depths of oblivion that was solely provided by the enforced amalgamation of four Tableland Shires in 2008 - a social experiment gone wrong if there ever was one.

I believe we must give forth accolades to that very first team of dedicated Mareeba Shire councillors who combined to work long and hard, and also those council officers and staff who combined to establish such a strong foothold from which we can ascend to better things in the future.

Your heaps of praise and appreciation are as much theirs as the Mayor’s.

As any thinking person will realise, there is still much to be done and time will tell how well this new council performs as a team of decision makers and visionaries.

On the other hand, Table-

land Regional Council also now begins with a clean slate, and similarly, sound hard decisions and teamwork will now become a necessity to create a secure future.

Surely the TRC former councillors’ personal items have been removed and their desks have been emptied so that the new council members can get down to the hard work ahead patching up the Shire - combining the community and committing past performances and personalities to the dustbin of the past.

History tells us that there is no real gain for the electorate when pure political opportunism overtakes real endeavour; and that is true of local government as well.

That said, I wish both councils all the best for the next four years.

Readers need to know the facts Reference to a recent editorial regarding life after TRC for our Ex-Mayor Rosa Lee Long, in a local Murdoch paper on March 22, 2016 and Murdoch’s Cairns paper on March 22, 2016.

The editors of both papers should do their own investigating and get the facts right regarding the total shambles of the expired term of the Tablelands Regional Council.

Readers of those newspapers need to know both sides of the story, not one side.

Readers can then make their own decisions as to which statement is the truth of the story.

The whole trouble, as expressed by former Mayor Lee Long, was not the other voting bloc, but her own voting bloc; plus the ever present casting vote. Rosa Lee Long ran the TRC to her own agenda rather poorly, together with her own voting bloc.

The public should be made aware of the former Mayor and former Councillor Geoff Stocker‘s elevation to chairperson and committee member of the “Southern Atherton Tablelands and Flood Mitigation Development Scheme.”

Rosa Lee Long’s term as Mayor of TRC achieved almost as much as she did in three terms with One Nation for the Tablelands – almost nothing (in my opinion).

With the announcement of the Federal Government’s Office in Cairns for the $5 billion Northern Infrastructure Project, Rosa Lee Long and Geoff Stocker will be back to their usual ways with all expenses paid.

They will attend a Northern Australia Development conference in Darwin in June and more to come. You must be joking.

Mareeba Lions (assisted by Scouts, Cubs, Joeys, St Stephen’s College and community members) took a heap of rubbish out of BiCentennial Lakes as part of the ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ campaign.

Co-Ordinator Lion Denis McKinley said it was pleasing to see so many volunteers from a broad crosssection of the community turn out in support of the event. Although less rubbish than usual was collected, half a ute load still found its way to the rubbish dump instead of the ocean. Mr McKinley said that the usual rubbish included plastic bottles, cigarette butts, and plastic wrapping, while unusual rubbish included a wheelbarrow bowl, large length of pipe and two council witches’ hats.

Mayor Scott re-elected to lead Cook Shire

COOK Shire Council Mayor Peter Scott has been successfully reelected for another term in office, after a solid victory in March 19’s local government election.

Mayor Scott’s team of councillors will have a new look about it, with four new councillors (John ‘Chook’ Giese, Larissa Hale, Robyn Holmes and John Dessmann) joining incumbents Alan Wilson and Kaz Price.

It was a unique situation for the Cook Shire during the election campaign, with 25 people nominating as councillor candidates.

In the mayoral race, Mayor Scott had three opponents (Greg Whittaker, Faewyn Goyen and Helen Rutherford) who he managed to defeat after securing a 42.88 per cent majority.

Upon reflection, Mayor Scott said he noticed a few subtle differences during the campaign – particularly the rise of social media.

“I guess the biggest change this time was the impact of social media,” he said. “Particularly, with the involvement of Facebook.

“Four years ago, there was an inkling of it out in the community, however this time there were a great deal of people who expressed their opinions quite vocally on certain issues.

“I respect every opinion as we all have got different backgrounds. People appeared to be a lot more aware of local issues during this campaign instead of hav-

ing a passing interest.”

Mayor Scott was pleased that a number of local mayors had been returned to office (for example, Tom Gilmore – Mareeba Shire and Julia Lieu – Douglas Shire) and believed that state, national and international events may have played a part.

“The current state government is on a knife’s edge,” he said. “It’s been going backwards and forwards and with the federal situation and international events (for example, terrorism) people are concerned.

“They are looking for solidarity and experience, so I think that may have played a part in a number of mayors and councillors being successfully returned.”

With a few incoming fresh faces, Mayor Scott said he would sit down with all councillors and work with them to fast track their transition into local government.

“Local government is a massive learning curve,” he said. “We are going to have a workshop on Monday (April 4), where we will cover the basic fundamentals including legal and legislation requirements.

“Over the next six months, we will

have a variety of workshops and educational components that will be undertaken by all councillors.”

After a transitional 12 months across the board, Mayor Scott believes that his team has a good blend of skills and experience.

“I’d like to make a special mention of our two returning councillors,” he said.

“Alan Wilson is well regarded by many throughout the Cape and has worked very hard over the years, which was reflected in the outstanding number of votes he received.

“Kaz Price manages the notfor-profit Cooktown District Community Centre and is about to enter her second term as a councillor, which is a fantastic achievement after relocating from Western Australia.”

Mayor Scott added: “John ‘Chook’ Giese grew up in Cooktown and has worked as a council staff member in a variety of roles.

He is also involved with the fire brigade and is the president of the local junior rugby league club.

“Larissa Hale really adds a lot to our team as well, through her

work out at Archer Point with the Yuku Baja Muliku Ranger program and here in town with the Kuku Bulkaway Gallery; and I’m thrilled to have an indigenous representative on our council.

“John Dessmann has lots of experience in a number of industries, including tourism, marketing and retail. He is a flamboyant character and is highly regarded around town. It will be good to have him on the team.

“Robyn Holmes is another long-time local who has gained a lot of respect from her peers and will be a valuable asset to the Council. She has worked at the local police station and has a strong agricultural background and understanding of the issues facing our large rural sector.”

Mayor Scott said he was heartened by his team’s commitment to the community and believes it should be the prerequisite for any councillor.

“Those are the things that I really like to see,” he said. “I believe that key criteria for any councillor should be their ability to demonstrate commitment to volunteering and helping out in the community.”

THE ICE CREAM MAKING MACHINE

Ice cream making machines have been around as long as we have had ice.

Mareeba identity Bill Fossett, now in his late 80’s, tells about the ice cream they made at the end of the school sports days when he was a boy at Watsonville.

The machine used to make the ice cream was similar to the one we have in our local Museum. It was hand cranked of course. The ingredients, such as cream, milk, sugar were placed into the cylinder in the middle of the wooden bucket. The cylinder was sealed and then coarse salt and ice were packed in layers around the cylinder and all the way to the top of the bucket. The combination of salt and ice became “dry ice”, very cold.

Then a member of the family, most likely one of the kids, would have to crank the handle; anything from half an hour to two hours, and then “Hey Presto”, there would be ice cream. Of course it would have to have been eaten immediately as there were no deep freezers to store it in.

In 1942, Mareeba was inundated with US soldiers, all addicted to ice cream, there was little available for purchase. Some clever kids made ice cream to sell to the soldiers and did very well.

Bill said he bought this particular machine at a QATB auction, organised by the first Mareeba QATB superintendant, Mr Norm Parker.

Gladiators weather Storm at Davies Park

THE Mareeba Gladiators started their 2016 Cairns District Rugby League campaign in the winner’s circle.

With excellent fitness and an appetite to win the hard ball, the Gladiators ran out 44-22 victors over the Edmonton Storm last Saturday night at Davies Park.

Ian King was star of the show for the home side, running in four tries. Equally impressive were solid performances from Clint Posselt and Jason Bail.

The Storm showed patches of brilliance throughout the match, however became rather ill-disciplined when the match began to turn against them.

From the opening kickoff, it appeared apparent that the Gladiators were prepared to

work hard on every set – either in attack or defence.

The visitors dominated possession in the opening 10 minutes. Ricky Schein and Steven Murgha pulled the strings as they tore through the Gladiators line on several occasions.

But Stowers has brought a resolve and work ethic with him that his boys have clearly embraced. Therefore, it was fitting that the home side would score against the run of play on 12 minutes.

After receiving a penalty 30m out from his own line, Posselt realised that the Storm defence were not set and he scampered away with electrifying pace.

THE Leichhardt Lions began their 2016 FNQ Premier League campaign with an impressive 4-2 win over the Mareeba United Football Club last Saturday night in White Rock.

Frustration was the overriding theme of the evening for Alex Srhoj’s men, who fielded a vastly different line up than in recent seasons.

MUFC talisman Wayne Srhoj dropped down to centre back to cover for the unavailable Alex Plowman – along with Jaydon Wells, Zane Singleton and Dima Sinelik making their first team debuts.

A rare lapse in defence from Srhoj midway through the first half would result in the hosts taking the lead.

The Lions would shortly double their lead, before MUFC levelled things up on the stroke of half time, with Wells and Srhoj finding the net.

However momentum swung sharply in the second half, with Srhoj given his marching orders after receiving two yellow cards.

Paul Ruiz would also have an opportunity to give the visitors the lead, but his penalty didn’t find the target.

Heads and spirit would drop from then on for the visitors, as the Lions gleefully finished their shift in style.

MUFC Premier Men’s coach Alex Srhoj said: “Realistically, Leichhardt probably had six shots on goal tonight and they scored four.

“We dug ourselves into a hole early on, got out of it and then fell back into it again. The match was a real learning curve.

“But it’s onwards and upwards from here on.”

The Bulls play at home this Saturday with games from 1pm.

THE Mareeba United Football Club is excited about the 2016 FNQ Premier League season, where they will aim for a premiership and grand final three peat.

Ronnie Leporati and Andre Soncin have brought together one of the strongest youth groups seen at the club in over a decade, with the club entering two youth teams in the comp for the first time in 10 years.

Angelo Tatti Snr has taken the reigns of the mens second division side and is looking to repeat the achievements of 2014.

The second division has a wealth of experience with a number of former champions returning for the season – including Josh Ruiz, Eric Iacutone and Jamie Wilesmith.

Things are looking strong in the ladies as well with both new and old players returning for another season.

“The ladies are looking brighter than ever and have really gelled in pre-season training,” Srhoj added.

Junior development, coach education and club unity in 2016 2016 will see a new wave of professionalism and drive towards junior player development and coach education at the Mareeba United Football Club.

Additionally, the club is making huge strides in bringing together junior and senior football to create a superb matchday environment at Borzi Park.

The idea is the brainchild of a number of premier league clubs (together with FNQ Football) and MUFC is 100 per cent behind working hard behind the scenes to make it happen.

“Already the signs are positive, with U/12, U/13 and U/14 junior sides playing at home against Marlin Coast, along with the premier youth, ladies, reserve and premiers all on the same day at the same venue,” MUFC’s technical director Alex Srhoj said.

“It has taken a lot of behind the scenes work and negotiations with

all stakeholders – but we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.”

Coach education and players development is also high on the agenda for MUFC in 2016, with Srhoj working closely with all grades and coaches to ensure a safe, enjoyable development steam across the entire club.

The club is also working with the NPL Qld-based FNQ Heat to create a Tablelands ‘Hub’ for a skills development program to be run out of Borzi Park for ages 9 to 12. This will give the clubs coaches regular access to new training methods and coaching development opportunities on a regular basis.

“It is all about working together,” he said. “At the end of the day, we need make sure our teachers (the coaches) are given every opportunity to learn and evolve and pass on new skills to the kids – because it is at all about the kids.”

The 2016 season kicked off with a bang last Saturday when Mareeba took on the Leichhardt Lions in Cairns. This weekend see’s the Bulls take on Marlin Coast Rangers at home. The ‘Super Saturday’ gameday kicks off at 1pm, at Lindsay Australia Stadium in Mareeba.

Games will be played on both fields all day, right through to the premier mens clash at 7pm – so come along for an action packed day and night and cheer on the Bulls.
