Men’s Shed expands Eight descendents of the Sorensen Family came together for a reunion at The Springs on December 9. They are pictured under a frangapani tree which was planted by Granny Dorothea Sorensen 121 years ago.
History preserved at The Springs, Mareeba
One of Mareeba’s most significant historical properties will be going on the market soon and its current owners are trying to trace its history to pass on. The Springs on Rains Road was part of the Hodgkinson Goldfield in the 1880s and later used as a shanty and stage coach horse change depot on the bump road from Port Douglas to Thornborough. The Sorensen family
lived there from the late 1800s onwards and it was descendents from that family that came together at the property on December 9 for a reunion. John Rains has owned the property since the 1950s and is compiling a historical document to record its past. He invited the family members to see the property as it is today and gather more information. They
came from as far as Julatten, Mt Molloy, Mareeba, Cairns, the Tablelands and Tully with photos and even one lady’s mother’s wedding dress. Initially a 48ha property, it has since been subdivided. In the early 1990s it was used for grazing and generations of families were born there. Mr Rains hopes his research will be of interest to the new property owners.

Mareeba Men’s Shed doubled in size overnight thanks to the donation of the old courthouse building. The all-male organisation was struggling to fit inside the original building at the end of Lloyd Street but thanks to the help of patron of the club Tom Braes and Mareeba Shire Council, they can now boast a whole new venue. “As this is a workshop, if you’re in the office or smoko room you can’t hear yourself think for saws and planes and god knows what else,” said one of the members Dean Thomas. “This new building is going to be a quiet, clean
area that will be used as an office, smoko room, kitchen etc.” The 12x9 building was installed next to the old one free of charge thanks to the Council last Wednesday and now means the organisation can house more equipment and get to work on more projects. The Men’s Shed offers a vital opportunity for its members to confide in one another, learn new skills and discuss their health. “It’s a god-send,” said Mr Thomas. “I’d go nuts without it. It’s somewhere to go, something to do – I’ve learnt new skills.” The organisation currently has over 60 members and is growing rapidly. Some suffer from dementia, PTSD and depres-
sion and the social side of the Shed gives them an outlet they wouldn’t otherwise have. “Men won’t talk about their health problems,” said Mr Thomas. “You find here that being a men only organisation, men will start talking about things like prostrates and testicular cancer and those things and they can open a discussion here amongst men and that’s why it’s enshrined in legislation that we can deny women entry. “It’s the only place in Australia that’s a men’s only place. Many years ago that used to have clubs and pubs that were men only but that’s all gone and there’s nowhere left that is men only except Men’s Shed.”

Local community organisation, the Mareeba Calabrian and Fagnano Castello Club, has made a significant donation of a new hospital bed to the Mareeba Hospital. The club, which was formed in 1983 by local friends Vince Cipolla and the late Gigino Avolio and supported by many other locals from the region of southern Italy, saw the need for this equipment and wasted no time in donating funds for the purchase. The Club held many traditional feasts featuring dishes and dancing from their native Fagnano Castello to fundraise.
Over the years the club has donated numerous funds to the Mareeba Hospital, Cootharinga North Queensland, Down Syndrome Association of Queensland and Autism Queensland Cairns branch. Vickye Coffey, Director of Nursing at the Mareeba Hospital, said that this was a significant donation because of its importance to the hospital. “It’s a state of the art bed used for trauma patients who would otherwise be moved to have x-rays, why this bed is special is that the patient can remain in bed while undergoing x-rays eliminating the need
for the patient to be moved to another bed,” said Ms Coffey. “This is the only bed of its calibre that we have at the hospital and will be used in the emergency department – it has much easier manageability in transporting patients from one section of the hospital to another.” Spokesperson for the Club, Rosanna Cosentino said they would like to thank all past and present members of the Club and the community for all their support over the years and that without their help donations like this would not have been possible.

One-on-one service for expecting mums
By Rebecca Wallis
Atherton’s mothersto-be will now be offered the same model of care as other hospitals in the region thanks to a decision to implement a Midwifery Group Practice model at the hospital next year. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) announced last week that women will now see one midwife at the hospital throughout their pregnancy, birth and post-natal care. It is a system that has been in place at Mareeba Hospital for the past 10 years, as well as other hospitals in the region. Currently, women reportedly by-pass Atherton Hospital travelling from as far as Ravenshoe and Herberton to have their babies in Mareeba so they can receive one-on-one care. “Switching to this model will enable women to see the same person,” said Dean Stevens, Midwifery Unit Manager at Atherton Hospital. “All the evidence shows that one-on-one care leads to better outcomes for mothers and their babies. “Published data shows this model contributes to shorter labours, a lessened need for pain relief, fewer pregnancy complications and improved breastfeeding rates. “I am very excited for the community and our midwives that we will soon
be offering this service.” Heidi Brennan from A-Mama (Atherton Midwives and Mother’s Alliance) was one of the women behind the push to get the model introduced. “It’s familiarity,” she said. “Knowing what the woman wants and is comfortable with. And it is consistency of information. People have different ways of approaching things, so to have the same person looking after you throughout the whole process is far easier.” Tanya Fleming, a midwife at Atherton Hospital, said the new model of care will reduce the statistic that one in three women suffers birth trauma. “Having a baby is a massively important time in a woman’s life,” she said. “The transition from being a woman to being a mother is huge and it’s important they have one person with them through that journey.” Mrs Fleming said that having one person take care of mums-to-be throughout the whole birthing process was proven to reduce the need for drugs during labour. “It allows them to build a trusting relationship with a known midwife,” she said. “There are so many hormones flowing throughout pregnancy, labour and after the birth and those hormones aren’t going to work properly if the women don’t feel like they’re in
Three students get an OP1 not one but three Mareeba students have finished their schooling life at the top of their game. Aaron Bryce and Marco Soncin from St Stephen’s Catholic College and Tristan BurfordBaynes from Mareeba State High School got the news they were waiting for on Saturday when they all received an OP 1 score. Mareeba High School principal Scott Whybird said: “We are all very proud of Tristan and the
whole cohort of year 12’s.” St Stephen’s Catholic College principal Ida Pinese said: “Their results are a testament to the strong partnership that exists between students, teachers and families who work together to foster student well-being and improved student outcomes.” Mareeba High School also received two OP2s three OP3s, two OP4s and two OP5s, while St Stephens received five OP2s.

for this to start quickly, however it will take some months as there is a process we need to work through to renegotiate industrial agreements,” she said. “I’m looking forward to working with our committed midwives at Atherton and our other hospitals, the union and the community, so we can introduce mid-

Senior constable Les Ah Chee retires
Four year old Sienna Squillari and mum Ornella have a go at some Christmas craft at Mareeba Library last Wednesday. Kuranda and Dimbulah Libraries also held Christmas craft making sessions.
After 27 and a half years, Senior Constable Les Ah Chee of the Mareeba Road Policing Unit has hung up his ticket book for the last time. Others of us will miss him dearly. Last Monday, the Tablelands Patrol Group came together to farewell Les, a much-loved member of its police community. After completing a few years in the New South Wales Police Force, Les saw the light and joined the Queensland Police Service on July 23, 1990. After graduating from the Queensland Police Academy in Brisbane, he started his career in Cairns on February 1, 1991 and two and half years later, Les joined Cairns Traffic Branch and never looked back He was to become one of only a handful of officers across the state, who have spent nearly 25 years in Traffic Branch now known as the Road Policing Command. In June 2005, Les transferred to the Mareeba Road Policing Unit, where he stayed until he retired on Monday. Sergeant John Ridgway said that it was clear how much Les loved the job, he would always go out at the start of his shift and come back at
the end of the shift and be proud that he was out there saving lives every day. “Les was always happiest and proudest when he came back with some good results as he was dedicated to road policing,” Sergeant Ridgway said. “Everybody that lives in the community here on the Tablelands or in Cairns, knows the name Les Ah Chee.” Sergeant Paula Byrne said she has known Les for about 23 years and he will be missed a great deal throughout the Patrol Group. “Working with Les was always interesting, he had some interesting experiences with protesters over a new development in Smithfield around 1994. Between being bitten on the finger by a protester and having to instigate the first protester arrest to having to wait awhile, while his partner untangled him from some wait-a-while vines, was quite comical,” Sergeant Byrne said. Les was always super polite and softly spoken but was often known as the smiling assassin. You could guarantee that if you did something wrong on the road, that Senior Constable Les Ah Chee

was going to see you and he would always give you a big friendly smile when handing you your traffic infringement notice. When asked what he was going to miss the most, Les was quick to say his colleagues. “I am going to
miss coming to work and seeing my extended family every day. I like to do the right thing and that is why I joined the Police Service and I love everyone I have ever been associated with in this job,” Mr Ah Chee said.

Who are our most inspiring Tablelanders? By Rebecca Wallis
Christmas is a great time to reflect and we at The Express decided what better way to look back on the wonderful people that contribute so much to our region, than by compiling a list of 10 of the most inspiring. So we got our heads together and thought about which names and faces have provided the most inspiration, whether it is through awareness, charity, history, sport or development of this fine part of the world. It was tough going trying to whittle down a long list of hard working, giving and selfless locals, but in no particular order, we give you our top 10 pick of the Most Inspirational Tablelanders. Margie Bestmann
Margie needs no introduction as the wife of the late and great Dr Mark Bestmann who died suddenly early last year after a long battle with mental illness. Since his passing, Margie has thrown herself into the community, rallying and raising awareness of this debilitating illness. Christine Doan

Mareeba State High School gifted a forklift
Christmas came early for Mareeba State High School when they recently were lucky enough to receive a forklift. The forklift was donated by Robyn Boundy of Glenley Piggery – a Toyota 3-stage Forklift which was donated to the Industrial Technology Department. Other local businesses also assisted which included – Kevin Dunn, of Performance Motors who
delivered it and John Hendle of Hendle’s Sandblasting for sandblasting and repainting the forklift. The schools Rural Operations Certificate course participants, with the guidance of their instructor Robert Klarich from the Queensland Agricultural Training College, have completely rebuilt the mechanicals, hydraulics and the manufacture of the dashboard for the electrical
wiring of the forklift. The staff and students were over the moon and thankful to Mrs Boundy for her kind donation. They have named the forklift “Bully” after her son-inlaw, who operated it for many years prior its arrival at the school. The forklift will now be used by staff and students who have their forklift tickets.

Major achievements
The facts
From election, Councillors have aspired to leave the Tablelands region in a better state at the end of their current term.
•
Securing $29M of new funding to Council for strategic projects, facility upgrades, and sustaining jobs and growth across the region
With 39% of the population aged over 60 years and this figure growing exponentially, limited access to services, low opportunities for employment and ageing infrastructure, Council has come to the realisation that standard business as usual will not provide sustainability for our community or industries.
•
Delivering $33.8M capital works including an additional $1M annual to road upgrades
•
85% customer satisfaction, including a 30% increase in satisfaction with roads
•
$400K funding to reduce infestations of navua sedge, helping 135 farmers
•
One Planning Scheme for the region guiding 104 development applications
•
Facilitated regional round table with 80 community service providers and agencies
•
Hosted youth symposium with 60 youth service providers and agencies
•
We have finalised the de-amalgamation split and set a clear direction for the sustainable growth of the Tablelands region through a new Corporate Plan which prioritises strong economies, vibrant communities, smart centres and planning for the future. With only $54.8 million operational revenue, we maintain assets worth nearly $800 million which consumes one third of the annual budget to maintain. In our first 600 days in office, we have achieved significant outcomes and will continue to strive for improved benefits, services and opportunities for the whole region, in line with our strategic direction. We have completed 98% of actions outlined in our Annual Plan and delivered a break-even 2016-17 Budget. We strive for excellence, are customised focused and need to address complex problems with no easy solutions. Dealing with significant legacy issues, we have to make hard decisions. Council hears diverse, and often conflicting, voices from our community. We respect the right of everyone to have a say and be heard. This needs to come from a position of being informed and not based on perception. We are open to hearing any feedback and insist on this being done in a respectful and constructive manner.
Letters to the editor sometimes call into question our services and acts. Information on our services, projects, financial management and avenues to request a service or report a problem are availble at trc.qld.gov.au or by contacting a Customer Service Centre. Here are the facts in response to comments made recently in local newspapers: •

TRC cone of silence
I have been a part of the delegation that has met with Council recently on behalf of concerned ratepayers in the TRC. We respectfully asked Council to meet with us to hear our concerns and answer very serious questions about a range of issues to do with rates, particularly in category F and G. Our first meeting involved no participation by Council, who sat at the back of the room while we were lectured to by the Valuer General’s office about valuations. At our second meeting we were informed at the outset that Council would not answer any of our questions on the spot, but would only listen to our concerns and take our questions, which they would reply to in due course. We received a patronising written reply some weeks later which did not satisfactorily answer the list of questions we had provided in writing to Council. While we have had some temporary relief for Cat F and G ratepayers in the recent Council correction to rates calculations, many questions remain about how Council got it so wrong in the first place. How can we have confidence in future rates periods unless we understand what happened in this one? We need these questions answered now and have a right to that information. After continual requests seeking a further audience with the Mayor, Councillors, CEO and relevant Financial Officers to have our questions answered, we have been refused any further discussion. This is simply not acceptable. We have elected these people to be our eyes and ears in Council, to watch out for the best interests of us – the residents and ratepayers. They are accountable to us and have an obligation to adequately answer any question put to them by their constituents. Taking weeks to formulate a response in the back rooms of the council chambers does not constitute transparency. I am appalled that my Council refuses to meet with me (whether in a group or individually) to answer questions and adequately address my concerns. Yet all the while the Mayor claims to run a transparent and accountable Council with an “open door” policy. Well the doors are locked from the inside and the Cone of Silence has descended over Mabel Street. The Mayor refuses to meet with the very people he is charged to represent and prevents his Councillors from doing likewise. If you too are disturbed by the apparent lack of accountability from our

Council, then please attend the upcoming Council meeting to make your presence felt. Council needs to see that there is a broad concern felt by ratepayers across TRC. Sandra Curcio, Tolga
Response to Jim Chapman on health
There is no denying past Mayor Jim Chapman of Atherton Shire Council and past Mayor Mick Borzi of Mareeba Shire Council were highly respected and were all about their respective communities no matter how big or small the issues may have been at the time including their local district hospitals or for that matter most state and federal government departments in their shire. There is no argument that past Mayor Jim Chapman did achieve much for the Atherton Shire and region in his 20 year reign as Chairman and later Mayor and no doubt that many of the services available at the Atherton District Hospital today can be attributed to Jim Chapman and those specialists and others who worked closely and tirelessly to obtain the best outcome for his community. Having recognised the achievements of past Mayor Jim Chapman of Atherton it is only fair and just that the achievements of past long serving Chairman and Mayor Mick Borzi be acknowledged to balance the ledger as it was this very prominent highly respected leader of Mareeba Shire Council for decades also that has seen the Mareeba Shire prosper along with his influences on the region particularly the construction of the Cairns International Airport. Mick Borzi has and still is a strong advocate to obtain and maintain the very best services for the Mareeba District Hospital. It was through Mick’s efforts some years ago that the community of Mareeba Shire pledged $166,000 to purchase a dialysis unit for Mareeba District Hospital which was to be supported by the Government of the day and Queensland Health to provide the necessary trained staff to operate same once installed. However the Government of the day and Queensland Health reneged on the deal at the 12th hour and instead offered to provide a bus from Mareeba to Atherton for the public funds raised to take dialysis patients to Atherton – as a consequence of this poor decision by both Qld. Health and the Government of the day the funds raised for the Dialysis unit were refunded to the public who pledged same. Mick Borzi has called
many public meetings in Mareeba over the past 25 years to prevent downsizing of services and inclusion of new services because of continual interference by senior health and state/ federal department officials who are hell bent on working on an unknown long term strategic plan which continually white ants the Mareeba District Hospital and in turn transforms the Atherton District Hospital into the main central health hub for the region west of the great divide. I can assure past Mayor Jim Chapman that whilst we may not have a Mayor supporting our cause at the present time, we do have a group of very concerned citizens in Mareeba who will continue to fight for our hospital and all the services that 22,000 shire residents of Mareeba Shire justly deserve and are entitled to. Blunt warning on drugs
I write with a blunt warning. Tragically crystal meth/ice is having a shocking impact on many suburbs and areas of Australia. It is true to say now that in many parts of Australia, crystal meth/ice is now cheaper to buy than even a takeaway pizza. It is never worth dabbling with a drug like ice – it is so dangerous and so addictive. Ice is tearing a massive number of families apart. This sadly includes damage to a massive number of Indigenous communities. In some communities, grandparents, parents and children are all using crystal meth. There is a very big misconception in the community that alcohol is the big issue for Indigenous Australians. Nothing could be further from the truth. Close to 100% of our clients have been impacted by ice and shock TV ads seem to be having no impact. You can buy ice in many parts of the country for as little as $5. We want to see governments everywhere developing rapid response teams to deal with a problem that has frankly got out of hand. People aren’t getting the help they need at the speed that is necessary. The under-reporting of ice is at a huge level. This problem is much bigger than people realise. People are being touched by ice everywhere. Young people are so vulnerable. We are asking governments everywhere to take action because of the scale of the problem. Scott Wilson, CEO, Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council

S Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, a bloke born in a shed out the back of a pub. In his adult life he put forward a simple message – love God, love others. Because he marched to this simple drumbeat, not the drums of the powerful, they tortured him to death. To quote Voltaire, the famous author and philosopher:“If God did not exist we would have to invent him”. And even for those who believe we evolved from a firecracker, would they not think that it would be a better world if people believed

they should create good for others, even if the others are people who put them down. The ruler of a small kingdom in Germany – not all that far away from the homeland of the English speaking peoples – decided it would be a good idea on Christ’s birthday to celebrate by giving gifts to poor people. His name was Staniclaus. He became St. Nicholas and we know him today as Santa Claus. In the night of Christmas, in that terrible war across the lines of the Somme – where in two months
250,000 men died in front of the barrels of machine guns – the German soldiers stopped fighting and started singing Silent Night. This in fact was a German song that had been translated into English. The French and British, of whom we Australians were part, also stopped fighting and started singing the English version of Silent Night. These things are the message of Christmas. – Bob Katter, Member for Kennedy
Christmas Greetings
From Mayor Tom Gilmore
Sally and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May this joyful season greet you with health and happiness.
AS we prepare to celebrate Christmas with our families and friends, it is so very important to take the time to reflect on the past year – our achievements and of course the challenges we have overcome, and also to think about the hopes and goals we hold for the New Year ahead. The essence of Christmas is of course, a time of charity and goodwill to the whole of mankind, irrespective of race, colour or creed. It’s been a very productive year in Leichhardt with numerous projects being delivered including the ongoing sealing of the Peninsula Development Road. I’ve had the privilege of representing Australia at the United Nations Generally Assembly for the past two and half months.
I recently introduced the Same-Sex Marriage Bill into the Lower House of Parliament. The same-sex marriage debate in both the Senate and Lower House was carried out with dignity and respect. Through a successful postal survey we have been able to bring a majority of Australians

It’s been a big year for Mareeba Rotary and we thank the community for supporting us in our endeavours. In January our members came back refreshed and hit the ground running for the epic year ahead. May saw Mareeba host the Rotary District conference where we welcomed hundreds of Rotarians and speakers from all across north Queensland and interstate for four days of fun, inspiration and learning. This was then followed by the Rotary FNQ Field Days which saw 20,000 people come through the gates for three action
packed days at Kerribee Park. Following this we had our club changeover with myself coming in as the President for the 2017/2018 year. We then said goodbye to our exchange student and then welcomed the Rotary International president to our wonderful town. Then it was onto the annual fun run and walk at the Bicentennial lakes where more than 100 locals joined in the fun to raise money for the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundaiton. In October, one of the clubs largest projects, the – Mareeba Hosptial’s childrens playground was offi-
cially opened. We then ended the year on a high with the Mareeba Rotary Carols by Candlelight. The above are just a few of our club’s projects throughout the year as there are just to many to mention. On behalf of all the members of Mareeba Rotary, we thank you again for your support throughout the year and we look forward to serving you in 2018. Have a safe and festive Christmas! – Matt Jacob, Mareeba Rotary President
God’s greatest gift to us Christmas is near, and to most it is a time of giving. These gifts, are often given with love and although nice to receive are not everlasting. The God of Gift-Giving wants to make himself personally known to us. The real reason for the season. God’s greatest gift to mankind was not only His begotten son, “Jesus Christ.” … but also an open invitation to all humanity to come to person-
ally know God… He call this “Christianity” “Every goof and perfect gift is from above and comes down from the father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither show of turning.” Gods other gifts to mankind, are His unending unconditional love, total forgiveness, Absolute tolerance and complete understanding. These are just to name a few. God freely gives to all humanity His abounding
never ending love. It is God’s intention is that we come to know Him and spend eternity with Him… It’s up to us to respond… Enjoy the Season wherever you are, Church, Home or Travelling. May God Richly Bless you and keep you safe this Christmas. – Pastor Jeff Xhafer, Royals Church Mareeba

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
I want to thank the people of Mareeba As we all prepare for the Festive Season, it is a good time to reflect on the year past and plan for the year ahead. I want to thank the people of the Mareeba Shire for your support and friendship that I have experienced as I met so many of you throughout the election campaign. I look forward to building on those friendships next year as we work together to build on the strengths of our community. For me, Christmas is all about family. It is a time to slow down and celebrate all that keeps us together. I hope that you and your family can come together to share the Christmas traditions that are special to your family.
And while we enjoy the festive season, let’s not forget there are many who need our help – people who are homeless, who are sick or who are alone. We should be grateful for our community organisations and churches and all those who selflessly volunteer to assist people in need. Let’s also thank our ambulance officers, our fire fighters, our police and the staff in our hospital who are working over the Christmas period. We recognise that you are sacrificing the precious time with your families to keep us safe. Wishing you happiness and peace for Christmas and for the New Year. – Cynthia Lui. Member for Cook

I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all of the many, many locals who contribute their volunteer time to our diverse community groups, including the multiple Chambers in our area. Giving of yourselves, all of you wonderful and hardworking volunteers, is a gift to the community, and also to yourself. There

I hope that you, like me, take time over the holidays to reflect on what a privilege it is to be in a position to be able to give of your time and energy to your community and earn that special personal satisfaction, as well as my personal thanks. Dimbulah Lions looks back at 2017 and all that they achieved The Dimbulah Lions Club would like to sincerely thank the community for their help and support throughout 2017. The Dimbulah Lions Club continually strives to uphold the Lions International motto of “We Serve” and to do what we can for those members of our community that are less fortunate than ourselves. Each year the Dimbulah Lions Club is inundated with letters asking for financial assistance or physical assistance (man power) and most times we are able to fulfil the request for assistance in some way. We are only too willing to keep supporting our local community in appreciation of your continued support in our find raising endeavours. During 2017 we have given thousands of dollars back into the local community and no doubt it has made a difference to many
people’s lives. This is why we do what we do. We would like to encourage each and every one of you this Christmas to give some thought to those members of our community that are less fortunate and to take some time to reflect on the real meaning

Christmas cakes on the Club’s behalf. A big thank you too, to all the residents of the Tablelands for their continued support of the Club’s monthly meat tray raffle and indoor markets – and of course, not forgetting our loyal stallholders, without whom the markets
would not be possible. All Lions Club of Atherton members join in wishing everyone a safe and relaxing Christmas and a hope that 2018 will bring good health and happiness. – Con Spanos, Atherton Lions Club President
Thank you for your support in 2017!
Wherever you are this Christmas we hope your day is filled with friends, family, food and fun!
It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas with everyone getting into the festive spirit and our town centres and streets adorned with decorations. This is a special time as another year draws to a close and a new year commences. As we prepare for celebrations with family and friends, please think of others who may not be as fortunate. The generous donations made to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal and gifts will help make the festive season brighter for many Tablelanders. I would like to thank our volunteers, staff and
my fellow councillors for their hard work over the previous year; as well as all the people within our community that give their time to assist. May the joy of Christmas and the excitement of new beginnings create a positive start to your festive celebrations. Please stay safe and enjoy our unique environment. If you want to find out what adventure or activity is available in our region, drop in to one of our Visitor Information Centres.” – TRC Mayor Joe Paronella

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
The Express editor reflects on the beauty of Christmas we will reopen on January 3 in the New Year. I will be spending the Christmas holiday with the family and working on the front garden.
As we near the end of 2018 my message to our readers these holidays is to take stock. Each year we seem to get busier and busier and as a result some of the simple joys that come with living in this extraordinary part of the world can be forgotten. That is the beauty of Christmas. It allows us, for a brief while, to reflect on the challenges we have faced, the adversity we have overcome as well as those
moments of happiness and success. As a newspaper we are in the privileged position of being to able to share with you, our readers, the good times and the hard. In writing this message I spent time flicking through file copies of The Express from this year and I am amazed how far we have come as a region and with the recent state election come new possibilities. As a newspaper it has been a year of change and
growth. In November, we were accepted into the Queensland Country Press Association and the Victorian Country Press Association, the only newspaper north of Brisbane to have been accepted thus far. It has been gratifying how our readership in both Mareeba and Atherton continues to grow and we look forward to working closely with all communities in 2018. Our offices will close on December 19 and
Christmas celebrates the wonder of new life
Christmas is the celebration of the birth of a child. What a beautiful thing to celebrate. That is why Christmas is first and foremost a family celebration, the children coming together with the ones who gave them life. Christmas celebrates the wonder of the miracle of new life passed on from one generation to the next. That is why the Christmas Crib has a place under our Christmas tree – Mary, Joseph and the infant, Jesus – the Holy Family together
in the midst of our family, gathering us together in thanksgiving for the gift of life and family. Each Christmas at St Thomas’s at our special family Mass on Christmas Eve, we are blessed to have a real live baby brought in by the children re-enacting the Nativity scene. If we watch the business report on the news we would be told that Christmas is that annual holiday set aside to save the economy. Maybe that’s a happy
corollary, but Christmas is for saving us, for welcoming that baby who is our Saviour. We are also told that one in four people in Australia are lonely at Christmas, so let us reach out to those in our neighbourhood who may be living alone to make sure that they too are included in the Christmas family. – Father John Sullivan, Pastor of St Thomas’s, Mareeba and St Anthony’s, Dimbulah
We would like to wish our customers a Merry Christmas and Safe Motoring over the festive break. The workshop will be closed from Friday December 22nd until January 15th, 2018.

The Mareeba Lions club members and Lioness members have had a very successful year raising funds through a whole range of activities including Christmas in July at Davies Park, our monster Christmas raffle which is kindly supported each year by local businesses in Mareeba and district, the family Metrogaine fun day at Arnold Park and the Lionesses Pink Ribbon Day at the Mareeba Turf Club. On behalf of all members of the Mareeba Lions and Lioness Club I would like to thank the community of Mareeba and district for their monetary support and patronage during the year of 2017 which has enabled both clubs the opportunity to help a range of organisations and individuals by way of further research into cancer treatment. It also enabled us to provide assistance to school students for both academic and sporting achievements including the Lions youth of the year speaking competition. Mareeba Lions Club

Abundant Life Centre ponders the life of Jesus Christ Merry Christmas to all fellow readers of The Express! As I ponder upon the life of the One whose birthday we celebrate on the 25th December, I am reminded of His compassion and concern towards the broken, the hurting, the bound, the sick, the
rejected, the poor and rich of society, during His three years of ministry. One day a certain lawyer tested Jesus, saying, ”Teacher, what shall I do to inherit, eternal life?” Jesus answered “What is written in the law?” The lawyer replied “You shall love the Lord your God with all

your heart, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbour as yourself”. Jesus said “You have answered rightly; do this and live”. But, he wanting to justify himself said “Who is my neighbour?” Then Jesus answered with the story of a man who fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him and left him half dead. A priest came along, saw him, and walked on the other side of the road. Then a Levite came along, stopped and looked but kept going. Then a Samaritan came along, looked and had compassion and helped the man by bandaging his wounds and pouring on oil and wine. He then put him on his donkey and took him to safety. My encouragement to you is to let the life and love of Jesus compel you to show compassion to your fellow man and together build a community that cares for each other. Have a blessed 2018 and may your light shine before men. – Darryl Roos, Abundant Life Centre Mareeba

YOUR RENTAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED
The Question: How can I reduce my electricity bill over the busy Christmas holidays? And do I need to do anything with my rental property when I go away for a holiday in early January for 3 weeks?
The Answer: With regards to keeping your electricity costs low over the holiday, here are a few practical steps that can help. • Before rushing to turn the aircon on, first let nature do its work, open all the windows and doors and try the fans. If this does not work and you feel like you are suffering badly from heat, then close everything up, pull the curtains across and set your aircon at 25 degrees for optimal electricity use. • Turn off lights, TV, fans and aircon when you are not in the room, or when you go out. • Hot water is a big cost, check if your water system thermostat is set to 60c and if not, ask your property manager if it’s possible to have it reset, just remember you can’t reset it yourself. • Take shorter showers - 4 mins is ideal. Wash your clothes in cold water and make sure you check for leaky taps regularly and report them to your property manager straight away, this will save you a lot. There is plenty more advice on the Ergon Energy website: www.ergon.com.au, check it out! As for what to you need to do when you go away on holidays, let your property manager know when you are leaving and expecting to return, and notify them of the best way to contact you in case an emergency arises. Other tips include: • Secure your property – check that all windows and doors are locked. • Disconnect all your appliances and turn off your hot water system. • Have a neighbour or friend keep an eye on your property for you. • Keep the lawn mowed and neat. • Make sure the rubbish bin isn’t left out. • Have a friend check and pick up mail regularly. Have a rental question? Contact us via email or phone. We will select the most common question for next month’s edition.

Malanda Pony Club end of year awards Roosters 1971 premiership winning captain/coach Dave Power. INSERT: Roosters 1974 and 1975 premiership winning captain/coach Graham Bevan (right).
Gearing up for Roosters milestone As a foundation club with great tradition, the Atherton Senior Roosters Rugby League Club has a long and illustrious sporting history. The Roosters will celebrate a major milestone in 2018 with the club’s 100 years after being established in 1918. It all started in the inaugural Eacham Senior Rugby League competition in 1918 with the Roosters competing against teams from all Tableland towns. The first Roosters premiership was in 1922 and this side also defeated Cairns Rugby League premiers Gordonvale in the NQ championship final. It took 49 years for the Roosters to win their next Eacham premiership in 1971 after being runnersup eight times. Dave Power was the 1971 grand final winning captain/coach and led the Roosters to a 12-8 pre-
miership victory over Mareeba Wests at the Atherton Showground. Three years later, the Roosters won back to back titles in 1974 and 1975 under captain/coach Graham Bevan. At the end of 1979 the Eacham Senior competition was disbanded ending 61 years of local Tableland rugby league. The Senior Roosters joined the Cairns District Rugby League competition in 1980 and have won two first grade premiership crowns(1993 vs Innisfail and 1994 vs Ivanhoes) from seven grand final appearances in those 37 years. History of the Senior Roosters is filled with remarkable achievements and legendary personalities. The Roosters boast a very successful corporate base which has increased substantially over the
years. A fair share of ups and downs have been endured by the club but there has always been the true fighting spirit of the red, white and blue which has retained the Roosters place in local sporting history to become a Tableland institution. Main 2018 celebrations for the Roosters 100 years will be held on the weekend of June 15, 16 and 17. Friday night June 15 – 100 year book launch, meet and greet at Roosters Clubhouse. THE summer Rhee Tae Kwon Do action day, held in Mareeba on Saturday December 9, was a great day for five Atherton students who stepped up to apply for their junior black belt grading test. 37 students and eight Black Belt Instructors attended Rhee Tae Kwon Do Action Day where five first grade (brown belt black tip) students from Atherton Training Centre applied for Junior Black Belt test under guidance of their Atherton Branch Black Belt Instruc-
tor Larry Simpson. 5th Dan Regional Master Instructor Gennaro Arena was the grading examiner on the day. Five youngsters Clare O'Sullivan 14, Ethan Cummings 13, Adam Keevers 12, Flynn Hyde 10 and Bridie Keevers 10 each demonstrated effective self defence, technique and stamina with several rounds of continuous free sparring. These students were also required to demonstrate their knowledge and proficiency of 30 consecu-
tive movements that make up “Choong-Moo” first grade pattern. Each student executed speed and power breaking single timber boards with running jumping flying side kick over 3 people, stationary side kick, spinning back kick and knife hand strike. All five Atherton students were successful on the day under Chief Grading Examiner Regional Master Instructor Gennaro Arena and were presented with their Junior Black Belts.
“It's been a great day and a very rewarding experience as the Branch Instructor at Atherton Training Centre,” said Black Belt Instructor Larry Simpson. “Training students who are keen to learn and rise to the challenges of Black Belt is gratifying.” “Our Atherton RTKD Training Centre will benefit enormously by having five new Junior Black Belts training and inspiring others who are on the same journey towards achieving Black Belt.”

THE Express annual “Summer Sixes” competition came to an exciting end with the grand finals held lasy Friday night, December 15, at Mareeba United Football Club. In what was a repeat of last year’s grand final, the
mens A-grade division saw the young Melendhrino’s finally defeat the experienced Los Torros 4-2, in a pulsating game with quality football on show by both sides. After a 2-all draw at the end of normal time, the la-
dies A-grade final went into extra time with the Golden Bulls scoring a last minute goal to claim the win 3-2. While on field 2, the ladies B-grade final was won by Amateurs who defeated Hasbeens in a close 4-2 game.

Another half century and a top score of 57 from young batsman Chris Adams wasn’t enough to help save Atherton in their Cricket Far North match with Mulgrave on Saturday.
Chasing Mulgrave’s first innings of 291, Atherton could only manage 133 in their reply off 53.4 overs. Only four Atherton batsman reached double figures in the final score – G Fox 12, C Adams 57, P
Sceresini 11, B Hasser 7, D Parnell 22, T Boorman 0, F Pittorino 2, M Salerno 9, H Steele 2, L Parnell 1, G Barletta 5. Atherton’s next match is a one day game against Barron at Loder Park on January 6.

Sunday was a great day of Cricket for Mareeba with both the Second and Third grade sides excelling on the pitch. Playing at Port Douglas, the second grade side bowled out Port for 69. Player of the day, Lachlan Ford got 5-24 off 13 with match figures of 11 for 31,
while Darcy Houlihan got 3-13 off 19, junior player Tyson Brown got 1 for 0 off 1 and coach Trevor Roy with 1-3 off 3. In Mareeba’s first season at their new venue, the teams coach and captains are focusing on inclusion and harmony in all the teams. As the younger play-
ers come through the ranks Mareeba will be a force in the future. The Third grade side played at home on Sunday against Mission Beach and also had a good win making Mission’s total in 21 overs. Cricket now breaks for Christmas before commencing again in January.
