THE State Government has been forced into an embarrassing backdown on fixing a potentially fatal stretch of the Mulligan Highway.

A 30km section of the highway between Mt Molloy and Mt Carbine has been left in a state of disrepair, with grass as high as two metres causing poor visibility for motorists trying to avoid hitting

wayward cattle and kangaroos on the road.

Mareeba Shire Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen said he knew of at least one vehicle which had recently been written off after an accident along the highway near Mt Carbine and blamed a lack of maintenance funding from the State Government.

“There’s nothing stopping a potentially fatal crash now, particularly with small, sedan-like vehicles,” he said.

“If a beast comes out onto that road and a driver swerves, the vehicle will roll.”

Council is allocated funding under the State’s Road Maintenance Performance Contract (RMPC) program to maintain several State-owned roads in the shire, but funding has been reduced by 13 per cent to $1.55 million this financial year compared to $1.78 million allocated in 2013/14.

After several enquiries from The Express to the

Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), a spokeswoman said TMR had informed council it would provide funding for the highway’s grass to be slashed by the end of this week and pledged that funding under the RMPC would be “fully restored” in the 2017/18 financial year. continued Page 3

Art mural makes impression AN art program designed to keep local youth engaged has given back to the community.

Run by the Mareeba Information and Support Centre (MISC), the after-school program had students between 11 and 16 work with local artists to create two art murals to donate to local businesses.

One of the murals, donated to Care Chiropractic Queensland in Mareeba, features aerosol street art mixed with indigenous-inspired dot paintings.

“It grew out of what the kids’ ideas were and the artists helped with some of the techniques,” said MISC’s Judy Burness.

“The feedback from the kids was great.

They really enjoyed it, they thought it was positive.

“The business owners were really happy about it.”

Ms Burness said some of the students had taken up art as a result of the program.

The murals follow on from MISC’s “CAFE 2” youth arts program, which had students produce street art at Mareeba PCYC during school holidays in January.

A FRESH look and feel is set to take over Malanda this year as the town celebrates the centenary of its annual show.

The township is undergoing a makeover in the lead-up to the show this July, with refurbished businesses, a new-look police station, town clock and spruced-up gardens.

The show ball will kick things off on June 25, while there will be a whopping 19 show queen entrants and a great procession of fancy floats. Queensland governor Paul de Jersey is also expected to visit.

Work has started on cleaning up the show pavilion and other showground facilities, with the Show Society, Chamber of Commerce, Small Farms Field Day Committee, Garden Club, Lions and Lionesses, Landcare, the Riverine group and Malanda Senior Eels all pitching in to help.

This year’s event promises to be an action-packed three days of entertainment, including equestrian high jump, a car show, dairy and beef cattle display, woodchops and a huge fireworks display.

Volunteers are welcome to help out in a second town cleanup on June 19 from 10am.

The Malanda Show will be held from July 8 to 10 at the Malanda Showgrounds.

But when told of the sudden turnaround by TMR, Mareeba Shire Council chief executive Peter Franks said it was the first he heard about it.

Cr Pedersen said if the grass was slashed, motorists would have some warning if animals did come onto the road.

“If there’s a bit of visibility, at least you’ve got time to brake,” he said. “If there’s no visibility, a kangaroo or a beast

will be in front of you before you know it.”

Cr Pedersen said urgent works were also needed at Emuford Woepen Rd from Irvinebank to Petford and Burke Developmental Rd from Chillagoe west.

“The State’s not listening at all.

They’re pulling funding where it’s desperately needed,” he said.

“To cut back on maintenance is allowing your asset to degenerate. You don’t even do that in business.

“I don’t know where they’re spending their money but it’s certainly not on road infrastructure.”

Wariness over backpacker tax TABLELANDS growers remain wary of the Federal Government’s intentions over the “backpacker tax”, after its implementation was delayed by six months.

The Coalition has pledged to establish a review of 417 and 462 Visa labour, if re-elected, paving the way for possible changes to the proposed 32.5 per cent tax on working holiday makers earning up to $18,200 in a year.

The review panel would then report back on October 14, allowing any changes to be introduced by January 1, next year.

Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro welcomed the government’s decision but said it created uncertainty for farmers around just what would happen with the tax hike in six months time.

“Whether or not that will have an impact on availability of workers here because of that delay is a little bit of a concern,” he said.

“We’re opposed to the changes being proposed by the current government and support the status quo remaining.”

But Mr Moro said if the government was to press ahead with the tax, the association felt a 15 per cent tax rate would be manageable for working backpackers.

“That brings it very close to what an average worker takes home, whether they’re an Australian resident or an Australian citizen,” he said.

Mareeba farmer James Howe, whose family is the largest employer of backpackers on the Tablelands, said scrapping the tax would help keep the local economy afloat.

“We rely on them so heavily and if we can get on with our job easier so can the rest of the community,” he said.

But Kennedy MP Bob Katter slammed the tax.

“We would not be able to harvest our food in Australia without backpackers. It’s just not possible,” he said.

“The situation with this tax is you would lose the backpackers and you would lose the tourism industry with it.”

Mr Katter said he had told Treasurer Scott Morrison one possible solution would be to im-

plement the tax without forcing farmers to pay superannuation, easing their financial burden.

But the idea fell on deaf ears.

“I just don’t think they care,” Mr Katter said.

LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto said he wanted to develop a workable solution for farmers and businesses affected by the tax and would be active on the government’s review panel, if elected.

Airport upgrade ready to take off THE Mareeba Airport upgrade has moved a step closer to lift-off as council awaits final approval on funding for the $18 million project.

Council officers are confident they will be able to execute a $13 million funding agreement from the State Government shortly, which will add to the existing $5 million grant already signed off by the Federal Government for the much-anticipated upgrade.

“We’re doing this upgrade essentially to build an industrial estate at the western end of the airport where people can paint aircraft, do internal refurbishments, engine maintenance and those sorts of things,” Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore said.

“We’re trying to build a business out there. We’re not necessarily aiming at passenger transport.”

The challenge now focuses on assessing

the airport’s World War II-era runway, with the possibility of adding a layer of asphalt on top of the existing gravel service being considered as a way to strengthen the strip and accommodate heavier aircraft.

Cr Gilmore said he wanted to lure regional freighter aircraft to Mareeba and position the airport as a key regional hub for the Asia-Pacific.

“The aviation industry in Far North Queensland is speaking of Mareeba for both flight training and maintenance,” he said.

“It is on everybody’s lips.”

Council is considering the possibility of the airport being able to take aircraft up to the size of a Dash-8 300 turboprop or a Fokker F100 regional jet.

The Dash-8 300 has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 19,505kg while the F100 has a MTOW of 45,810kg, meaning there would be substantial differences in

pavement configuration depending on which option council went with.

“If I could get Dash-8s in Mareeba for regular maintenance, that would be a big coup, a major change to the way things are looked at,” Cr Gilmore said.

“We’d also want to get flight training in here at an international standard but that’s over time. I’d like to see 20 or 30 aircraft operating out of there within 10 years doing flight training.”

The North Queensland Aero Club and GBR Helicopters both run flight schools out of Mareeba.

Initial tenders for airport upgrading works will be issued between June and July, with upgrades to water supply services and widening of Vicary and Ray roads to be completed by the end of this year.

Runway and taxi works are set to start after next year’s wet season.

Cattle station upstages State and greenies A CAPE York cattle station is setting an example of sustainable agricultural development, defying criticism from the State Government and green groups.

A field day held at Laura’s Olive Vale station last Wednesday showcased promising high value crop trials of rice, sesame, guar, soybean, navy bean, grain and forage sorghum.

A special guest at the field day, State agriculture Deputy Director Malcolm Letts, agreed the land development and crop trials had left him with a favourable impression.

He said the crop trials were encouraging and that the project could be viable with the right varieties.

But when asked about the probability of more agricultural projects on Cape York, Mr Letts was less optimistic.

“If the vegetation laws were not there, more approvals could be given,” he said.

Mr Letts said as far as he was aware, suitable open country without tree coverage could be farmed under existing laws, particularly areas of open downs that have been identified on Aboriginal freehold or other pastoral leases.

“These areas could be used for value adding to cattle,” he said.

from previous page Olive Vale owner Paul Ryan has borne the brunt of a vicious, year-long campaign by Cairns and Brisbane-based environmental groups targeting the former LNP Government’s tree clearing laws.

A permit to clear vegetation was granted on January 20 last year, during the “caretaker’ mode prior to the change of government.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad conceded the vegetation clearing was lawful as the original application had been made in the mid-term of the previous government after requesting two extensions of time.

In a statement, Ms Trad told Parliament last year land clearing was approved at Olive Vale for the purpose of high-value agriculture that included upland rice, which she claimed, is not currently grown as a commercial crop in Queensland.

But a trial plot of thriving healthy rice

planted in ground was pulled and raked late last year, upending Ms Trad’s claims.

Tablelands agronomist Tony Matchett began the trial plantings in January and was very satisfied with the results.

“There was 429mm of pre-plant rainfall during December and January and in-crop falls of 300mm, which is 40 per cent below the wet season average,” he told a group of 25 farmers at Olive Vale’s field day.

“The rice, mung beans, guar bean, sorghum and sesame have done exceptionally well and provide an excellent range of rotational crop choices.

“Several crops did not perform due to the prevailing environmental conditions or an inappropriate sowing window.”

So far Mr Ryan has cleared 1650 hectares, of which 200 ha has been cultivated.

A Mareeba contractor has been engaged to cut and bale 100 ha of well established forage sorghum planted in January.

CLEALL’S

Irrigation would help put the icing on the cake for high value cropping that could establish a viable agricultural industry in the Far North, but Mr Ryan will be unable to build any irrigation dams in the near future.

The State Government published a moratorium notice of proposal to prepare a draft Water Resource (Cape York) Plan last week that will prevent any new water licence applications including surface storage or bores until the end of 2018.

The Pastoral and Agricultural Representative on the Cape York Peninsula Regional Advisory Committee, Lakeland’s Joy Marriott, said the moratorium over two years would stop any development of the north.

“The moratorium should be reconsidered by the State Government because they are obviously not aware of the jobs that new agricultural development and housing infrastructure will provide to the Cape York community,” she said.

Vegetation laws slammed BATTLELINES have been drawn as Tablelands leaders prepare for a fight against the State Government’s proposed vegetation laws.

Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said the Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 was unnecessary.

“At the end of the day, we think it’s not in the best interests of the landholders in our area,” he said.

“This issue of land clearing needs to be loosened up or kept at the status quo.”

Of key concern for farmers is the Bill’s intention to prohibit further development of high-value agricultural land and irrigated high-value agricultural land and stop the clearing of “high-value regrowth” on freehold land, something which farmers have regularly managed on their proper-

ties for several years.

Mr Moro said the Bill flew in the face of the Federal Government’s Northern Australia White Paper, which advocated the expansion of agriculture in the region.

“You’ll see no expansion of agriculture in that sense, other than what currently exists in Queensland,” he said.

“There’s possible expansion of the Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation areas as far as consolidating their operation and there are small parcels of land that need to be cleared and these proposed laws prevent that completely.”

Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth slammed the proposed laws, labelling them “draconian”.

“The government wants to reverse the onus of proof and bring in retrospective laws that could see landowners jailed for clearing re-

growth under what is flawed mapping,” he said.

If passed, the laws would be retrospective, taking effect from the date the Bill was introduced into parliament on March 17.

Mr Knuth said he and fellow Katter’s Australian Party MP Robbie Katter were confident they had the support of the LNP in opposing the laws.

But the pair was still in discussions with Cook MP Billy Gordon and Speaker Peter Wellington, whose votes will be crucial when the Bill is expected to be put to a vote in July.

“There has been a lot of merited advice given to them and we are hoping they will take that advice on board,” Mr Knuth said.

A parliamentary committee is due to report back to Parliament with its assessment of the Bill on June 30.

Over the last eight months, I have travelled over 52,000 kilometres throughout Kennedy meeting and speaking with voters about how we can ‘Make Kennedy Matter’ again at the upcoming election.

For too long, our communities have suffered with inadequate representation and an ‘all talk’ Member of Parliament. It’s one thing to talk but another to act and improve the lives of your constituents.

In the first week of the campaign, I have spoken to hundreds of people about the importance of having a stronger, properly funded education system. It’s vital for every student in Kennedy and indeed the nation.

To reinforce this message, I was joined in Innisfail and Ingham by our Labor leader Bill Shorten, NSW Senator Sam Dastyari and Queensland Senate candidates Murray Watt and

Anthony Chisholm.

It was an opportunity to speak with voters about Malcolm’s Turnbull’s plan to rip $222 million from Kennedy schools over the next 10 years and how we must not allow this to happen.

The only way to prevent these savage cuts and to elect a government that will invest in our children’s education to give them every chance - is to vote Labor.

A Shorten Labor Government will reverse all of the Liberals’ school cuts – investing $1.8 billion more than the Liberals in regional and country classrooms in 2018 and 2019 alone.

Schools in Cairns and the far north will receive an extra $50 million more than under the Liberals in 2018 and 2019. While those in Townsville and the north-west will benefit from $105 million more in targeted needs-based investment compared to the Liberals in 2018 and 2019.

Under Labor’s plan to fund the Gonski reforms on-time and in-full,

Many people think that if the main income earner buys a house for the family during the relationship, pays the mortgage and rates, the other partner has no rights in the house.

Family law says differently. Help Ravenshoe get a pool I am appealing to the people of Ravenshoe and all the surrounding areas to help me in my effort to have a swimming pool built in Ravenshoe.

We have 602 children with no safe and secure place to swim. Then there are the aged care (like me) and disabled who would derive fantastic benefit from year round exercise in a heated pool.

In 2010 I broke my leg, pool exercise was the recommendation. I found it cheaper to buy a return flight to Perth and exercise in my friend’s pool for a month than to catch the bus to Atherton and use the pool there.

Sad to see I was saddened to hear this morning that the Overflow chain was experiencing financial hardship and in danger of folding, under the ever increasing pressure from the Coles and Woolworths giants. Giants who, incidentally, have a choke hold on the food, fuel, alcohol and hardware business across Australia.

I was also saddened when I went to do my weekly grocery shopping in one of the giant’s outlets and found myself in a long line up of fellow trolley pushers, trying to get to one of the few check-out counters that was actually operating with a real, live person on duty.

DESIGN work has begun on Mareeba’s wastewater treatment plant upgrade, with land clearing at the site starting this week.

The multi-million dollar project involves the construction of a refurbished activated sludge treatment plant to new licence standards, the upgrading of the pressure main delivering raw sewage to the plant and a new inlet works.

“The refurbished plant is being designed for a connected population of 12,500 which on current growth trends will sustain sewage treatment services through to 2035,” Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore said.

Pre-commissioning checks of the site will start in December.

MORE than $200,000 was raised for charity in this year’s Great Wheelbarrow Race.

The three-day event had 42 teams compete on a mammoth 140km journey from Mareeba to Chillagoe pushing nothing but a wheelbarrow.

While down on the $243,000 raised in last year’s event, race organising committee chairman and Mareeba Shire councillor Nipper Brown was full of praise.

“Once again we have managed to raise significant amounts for charity,” he said.

“The support from the general pub-

lic was unbelievable again and the small town reception was great as always.”

Cr Brown said the race brought out the best in people.

Competing for the second year running, St Joseph’s Nudgee College from Brisbane broke their record by 12 minutes, falling short of beating local team and overall winners “Boys from the bush”.

Cr Brown said the dates for the 2017 race will be announced in the coming weeks.

Signs target cyclist safety MAREEBA Shire Council will install new warning signs across several popular cycling routes.

used by both motorists and cyclists to improve driver awareness.

The signs will be installed at Chewko Rd, Ray Rd, Tinaroo Creek Rd, Fichera Rd, Henry Hannam Dr and Chettle Rd.

MAREEBA Shire Council is changing its meeting schedule.

From July 1, ordinary meetings will be held on the third Wednesday of every month as opposed to the fortnightly schedule currently in place.

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the new schedule, citing the small agenda of meetings at the first meeting of each month, with the majority of reports being tabled at the second meeting of that same month.

“Monthly meetings will reduce council costs in terms of resources required to conduct the meetings, and will also pro-

vide councillors with the opportunity to spend the additional time liaising directly with the community,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said.

Meetings will continue to be held at the council chambers on Rankin St from 9am, unless otherwise determined by council. Changes to the dates and times of the ordinary meetings and meetings of standing committees will be published in local newspapers, on council’s website and by notice in council’s public office.

Mareeba Lions are proud to announce that bursaries have been awarded to Tristan Burford-Baynes of Mareeba State High School and Victor Bernhardi of St Stephen's Catholic College to attend the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics practice and education) programme. This unique opportunity at the Griffith University Eskitis Institute for Drug Discovery and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute is important in engaging students in STEM subjects together with providing insight into future study and career opportunities in the STEM field.

The programme is designed to extend science learning beyond the classroom. The program is aimed at identified, high achieving students who have a strong interest in biomolecular sciences and chemistry.

Mareeba Pool set to celebrate 50 years The man who was at the helm of the Mareeba Shire Council in 1966, Mick Borzi, has over the years, a number of swimming shields named in his honour, for which competitors swam for in various competitions.

The Mick Borzi Shield, which dates back to when the pool was first opened in 1966, has seen a number of replacements and changes over the years.

Local resident Henry Sciani has just completed a general refurbishment and restoration of the shields, which had seen better days.

As Mayor (or Chairman) of the Mareeba Shire Council as he was known in those days, reflects on the importance of the pool for the residents of Mareeba.

Mr Borzi said the pool was a necessity even before it was built in 1966 – we started planning for it in 1964. We simply could not afford to build it because the town was growing.

“The demands on the council were huge, the pool was eventually built with day labour, which was not the norm in those days.”

“The estimate to build the pool was 120,000 pounds, all the tenders came in substantially above that and by using day labour we were able to reduce the building costs.”

Mr Borzi remembers that the council had numerous projects they would have liked to get a start on but they had to prioritise the more important ones.

“It was important that people could enjoy swimming in a safer location other than the Brewery Hole,” he said.

“The Brewery Hole served a purpose for a period, but parents felt safer leaving their kids at the pool than at the Brewery Hole.

“As you could imagine there was little TV , video games and all the mod cons of today ,the pool was extensively used right up to today.”

The Mareeba pool will celebrate its 50th anniversary this Sunday where a large crowd is expected to show up as the community remembers the history of the landmark.

The day will feature lots of fun activities for the family and the entire community is invited to attend.

Commemorative book to be launched this Sunday With the celebration of the Mareeba Swimming Pools 50th anniversary comes the official launch of the booklet “The History of the Mareeba Memorial Swimming Pool”.

Committee members who came together to commemorate the pools 50th anniversary have worked tirelessly in collating the book in a presentable chapter of the region’s history.

Karen Pedersen and Irene Kernot were instrumental in gathering memorabilia for the pools 50th anniversary

and thought that their hard work should be put to good use and therefore began to compile the History of the Mareeba Memorial Swimming Pool.

Henry Sciani and Liz Crunkhorn had organised the 25th anniversary so they helped a lot and Irene Shanks organised the Masters with Irene Kernot giving us information, while Marie Kirk did the disabilities section From where it all started at the “Brewery Hole” on the Barron River to the modern Olympic size pool we have today, few residents of the shire have not taken a

dip into the waters of the Mareeba Pool without some reminiscing of days gone by.

Following decades of competing in the depths of the Brewery Hole and swimming against the challenging current of the Barron River, Mareeba residents wholeheartedly supported the construction of their very own swimming pool.

The book will be on sale for just $5 this Sunday when the community celebrates the 50th anniversary of the pool opening.

Dimbulah set to come alive as festival fever hits town

DIMBULAH will come alive with food, entertainment and festival fun this Saturday, May 28, with the 2016 Lions Festival set to captivate the community.

A jamb-packed night of entertainment is planned, kicking off with the famous downtown street parade at 5pm.

An exciting line up of local entertainment has been organised for the event, which will culminate with the crowning of the ‘Festival Queen and King’ at the end of the night, followed by an amazing display of fireworks.

Dimbulah Lions Festival event coordinator Brendon Goldsworthy said this year’s event will be bigger and better with the great line up of entertainment planned.

“As well as our regular entertainers, we also have some new

ones on show in 2016,” he said.

“There will be a whip cracking demonstration, a performance by the North Queensland Drum Line “rePercussion” and the Cairns and District Chinese Association, amongst many others.

“This year we also have a great number of entrants in the queen competition – with seven queen entrants and two king entrants vying for the crowns.

“All of the finalists are tremendous ambassadors in the community, which will make it extremely tough for the judges.”

Mr Goldsworthy said the festival had a multicultural appeal, with a vast array of cultures represented in the various food stands at the festival.

“It would not be a festival without the food village,” he said.

It will be a favourite as always

with a series of community organisations running food stalls on the night.

After the fireworks, the festival will continue late into the night with a live band and bar open till late.

Mr Goldsworthy concluded that it was a fantastic opportunity for local organisations to participate and be a part of the festival.

Festival organisers would like to recognise the outstanding support received from several sponsors across a multitude of levels. “Without our sponsors this event would not be possible,” said Mr Goldsworthy.

Annually, the month of May is approached with great anticipation and excitement as it builds towards the culmination of what we know to be the great ‘Dimbulah Lions Festival’. As the 2016 Dimbulah Lions Club President, it excites me to be involved in the organising of an event that is steeped in tradition, is central to our community and provides not only an opportunity to celebrate but also to raise much needed funds for our local clubs, services and citizens.

Our 2016 theme for the festival celebrates the ‘Year of the Worker’. Regional Australia always struggles with many adversities but it is the resilience of all workers which keeps our rural communities surviving and thriving.

The club is very proud of our little community and all the efforts which people contribute to making it a happy and secure

place to live. Each town has an annual festival and we are no different in that respect.

This year we again offer the diverse range of foods that we're traditionally known for, a long list of varied entertainment which is bound to suit all age groups and the opportunity for old friends to meet again.

Huge increase in the cost of car repair in rural and regional Communities The cost of servicing cars in Australia and the right for consumers to have the freedom, of which they choose to service their cars, is set to hit the election trail in country and regional Australia.

The campaign highlights the impact on fragile rural economies and their communities by the restriction of data by car manufacturers to independent car repairers.

Stuart Charity, Executive Direc-

"This 'Data Lockout' means car owners in country and regional Australia can be forced to drive hundreds of kilometres to a dwindling number of manufacturer aligned dealerships just to get their cars serviced or repaired through a deliberate 'Information Lock Out' which appears to be increasingly built into vehicles."

Mr Charity says every time this occurs it drains money out of smaller country towns and regional areas, which often already have fragile economies and is directly against the Federal Government's campaign for small business to shop locally.

"At the heart of the matter is the urgent need for commitment by the Federal Government to establish a National Automotive Re-

pair and Servicing Portal to protect the integrity, safety, and training and cost control of car repair and servicing in Australia.

"This means, through an arrangement similar to that in the United States, all manufacturers of cars being sold in Australia, would be required to participate in the National Automotive Repair and Servicing Portal so that repairers can access the information online from their workshops anywhere in Australia saving time and money.

These same manufacturers are already actively participating in the USA Automotive Repair and Service Portal. The question for all political parties is why Australia has not moved to the same innovative solution, which would basically be self funding and benefit the entire community."

Mareeba coup for Peninsula teams

THE Tablelands’ best young female soccer players have been rewarded with several spots on Peninsula teams.

Chloe Taylor (Atherton Eagles/St Stephen’s), Tonia-Marie Rantucci (FNQ Heat/St Stephen’s), Kiyah Iacutone (Mareeba Bulls/St Thomas’) and Jenna Soncin (Mareeba Bulls/Mareeba State High) all made it on to the Peninsula team for the U12 Football State Championships in Stanthorpe next month.

Atherton Eagles player Abby Taylor, who attends St Thomas’ school, was selected as a shadow for the U12 side.

Meanwhile, 12-year-old Mareeba Bulls standout Jemma Morrison made the U15 Peninsula team side, well above her own age group.

“I was pretty surprised and really happy,” the St Stephen’s student said.

“I’m pretty tall for my age but the Under 15’s are going to be pretty hard.

“I’m going to have to use all my body strength and skills to keep the opposition off the ball.”

Jemma will contest the 13-15 Girls and Boys Football State Championships on the Sunshine Coast in July.

“I really like travelling a lot, meeting new people and coaches because they give you new skills,” she said.

The Julatten youngster hopes to repeat her success last year after making the Queensland side, with the State Championships effectively a stepping stone for selection.

Soccer mum Sherri Soncin said the strong representation of Tablelands play-

ers on Peninsula teams was a boost for the region.

“There’s definitely a lot of talent up here,” she said.

“The U12 girls travel to Cairns every Sunday for two hours of training.”

Mrs Soncin said while Jenna, Kiyah and Tonia-Marie had previously all played together at the Mareeba Bulls, it was the first time the trio had combined with Abby and Chloe for the Peninsula team.

“They play five games when they’re in Stanthorpe, followed by the semi-finals and from there, they make the announcement for the Queensland team,” she said.

“The girls will get some great experience playing at that level.”

Businesses rev up for young speedsters DRIVEN: Young driver Erik Wallace with dad Ian and the car and trailer up for grabs.

SEVERAL Far Northern businesses have pitched in to give away the ultimate toy.

A car and driving package will be raffled off by FNQ Junior Speedway in a bid to promote young people in the motorsport.

The package consists of a four-cylinder speedway car, trailer and full racing suit which will hopefully attract some newcomers to the thrills and spills of speedway racing.

Mareeba Speedway president Ian Wallace said the money raised would assist junior drivers with the costs associated with racing.

“They love to race, but it can be expensive, so we hope to able to help them out a bit,” he said.

“The Queensland titles are being held in Cairns on June 25, with the FNQ Junior titles in Mareeba the following day – there will be kids coming from all over Australia to compete.”

The package is valued at over $9000 and was donated by Cairns RSL, Wallace Quarrying and Mining, Dirt Professionals, Crossy’s Crane Hire, Bochow’s Mechanical Service, Fulcrum Suspension Specialists, AJ’s Fibreglass Panels and Jennings Farming.

Tickets are $20 each, or three for $50 and can purchased by members of the FNQ Junior Speedway.

Juniors shine in league MAREEBA Junior Rugby League hosted round six of the Cairns and District Junior Rugby League competition at Davies Park, on the weekend.

Juniors from under 6 to under 16 all took to the fields for an afternoon of rugby action.

New goal posts donated by Tonkin Steel, LM Engineering and RTS Concreting were also unveiled on Saturday.

Roosters Coach Dean Howard is not happy with his sides recent form and looking at changes.

Suburbs ripped the monkey off their back on Saturday night, claiming their first victory of the 2016 Cairns District Rugby League season with a 26-16 win over the Atherton Roosters, at Roosters Stadium.

After a roaring start to the season, the Roosters have now lost their last three starts, but remain in the top five mix.

Although it was a very wet track, Roosters coach Dean Howard said there was no excuses for another poor effort from his side.

“Our forwards are going well, but we are making a lot for errors in attack,” said Howard.

“We are turning the ball over early with poor handling and not showing to much energy in what we do.

With the Roosters reserve grade going well, Howard said he would be looking at making some changes to the top side.

Barras challenge Comets Semi-Final bound Comets were strongly challenged

by Barras, in last weeks round of the Mareeba mens Basketball competition.

With under two minutes remaining to the full time hooter, the encounter was evenly balanced. But a couple of long bombs by outstanding youngster Jeremy McKay and a successful basket by the ever consistent David Hawke, suddenly extinguished the hopes of an upset win by Barras.

Jeremy McKay was simply superb in scoring 31 points in the Comets, 56-47 victory over Barras. No doubt Daniel Ruggeri produced his best performance since returning from overseas and contributed 17 points, while Tommy Harvey also played well for Barras.

The other mens fixtures both resulted in surprise results. Stingrays narrowly defeated Young G’s by 43 to 41. While competition leaders Red Devils suffered consecutive defeats going down to Mareeba Express by 4 points.

This week sees the concluding round of competition fixtures before semi-finals. With Red Devils just holding a single point lead over Comets on the points table, the results of fixtures this Thursday are vital. To retain top position Red Devils need to defeat Stingrays.

While unseasonal rain caused the Mareeba Bulls Premier game to be washed out on Sunday, the mens 2nd Division side was the shining light on Friday Night.

Staying ahead of the pack the side are leading the FNQ 2nd Division ladder after a hard fought 1-0 win over the Leichhardt Lions, at Lindsay Australia Stadium in Mareeba.

The Bulls faced a Lions outfit sprinkled with former Bulls – including coach Sasha Stankovich and youngsters Pier Portella and Luke Trabucco. Both were involved early as the Lions came out firing and caught the Bulls napping at the back. Mario Terranova put his body on the line to save one off the line and keeper Joe Marinelli was in fine form. The second period kicked off with the Bulls bossing the Lions around the park with striker Damien Wildman, midfielders Josh Ruiz and Eric Iacutone all coming close.

It was Wildman who finally found a break through in the 60th minute with a bullet header hitting the crossbar and bouncing down over the line.

Wildman’s goal was the only goal of the game and enough for the Bulls take home all three points – staying five points clear at the top of the competition.
