School holiday fairy party
The school holidays are in full swing and kids across the Tablelands have been having fun at events throughout the region. Nearly all libraries have held free events for children including free movie screenings, puppet shows, craft and lego events and even a zoo experience which was hosted by Mareeba Library last week. Dimbulah kids were treated to some fairy fun last Thursday when Rachael Dogao from the library and volunteer Cristine DeMeioTaiti put on a fairy tea party. The children got to discover their fairy name, make a special hat and even enjoy some delicious fairy bread. This week the library is offering children the chance to make a fairy garden. Schools will re-open for business on Tuesday, October 3 ready for the last term of the year before Christmas!

Solar farm boom

Not one but two solar farms are planned for Mareeba bringing in hundreds of jobs to the region and millions of dollars in investment. Mareeba Shire Council ap-
proved with conditions an application for a 196,000 solar panel farm on Lockwood Road at last week’s meeting, with a second separate application lodged just days later. Sydney company Cleangen Projects applied for a 60 mega
watt solar farm to be built on cane farm land just 5km from town, dwarfing the region’s next nearest solar farm at Lakeland – a 30 mega watt farm near Cooktown. Councillors approved the application at Wednesday’s meet-

Therwine St gets a makeover
After calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) last month for suitably qualified contractors to undertake the design and construction of the Therwine Street redevelopment, Council approved the short list and will invite those to tender for the exciting redevelopment. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the overdue project would improve the streetscape and correct footpath deficiencies that have manifested over time as the village has evolved as a tourist destination and visitor numbers increased. “It is envisaged that calling for expressions of interest will attract qualified contractors and allow Council to develop an appropriate scope of works within the allocated budget,” Cr Gilmore said. The $1 million project will be delivered via the Kuranda Infrastructure Program which is funded through a levy paid by SkyRail and Scenic Rail.
Pink Ribbon markets

A reality TV star will be wowing the crowds at the annual FNQ Country Music Festival next month. Judah Kelly has been a regular performer at the Mareeba event over the years and is back as the main act for 2017 after winning a major singing competition recently on Channel 9. Now signed with Universal Music Australia, Ju-
dah’s music is described as ‘country with soul’ and the now in demand performer is sticking to his promise of returning to his roots and performing on the same stage that helped to cultivate his talent. “We have a lot of talent here in Far North Queensland,” said Mrs Bell. “It’s a good opportunity for young people to get out there – that’s what we’ve always aimed at. It’s to get these kids out there.” Held on October 6, 7 and 8 the FNQ Country
Music Festival is back in the main arena at Kerribee Park. “In recent years we have held it outside on the grass and it was great, but it didn’t have the same atmosphere,” said president of the club Jody Bell. “We’re putting it back into the main arena and hoping to get the old feel back.” The festival has been running for over 20 years and seen young performers go through the talent quest and on to have successful
careers performing all over Australia. Some of them will be back on stage on the Friday night showing the audience how far they’ve come. The talent competition will see one lucky performer win a scholarship with the Country Music Association of Australia, not to mention sharing the stage with some of the region’s finest performers such as Shandell, Maranda Pugh, Darryl Chaplain, Careless, Paul Wilson, Wendy Coppo and Tyson Lucas.
Last year’s winner Teagan Smith will be performing on the Friday night along with other past winners. Close to 1000 people are expected to come and enjoy the music, bar and food stalls and the warm welcome that only country music provides. Bring a chair and set up camp for the weekend. Tickets available on the gate and the fun kicks off on Friday, October 6 at 7pm and goes right through Saturday and Sunday.

A Cairns man is on the Tablelands this week trying to drum up support for his idea to get north Queensland its own state. Bill Bates is a self-funded retiree who feels passionate about the ‘raw deal’ regional Queensland gets and wants a referendum to provide them with the opportunity to vote yes or no on the proposition of creating a new state.
“There’s a reasonable amount of unhappiness about the decisions that come out of Brisbane,” said Mr Bates. “I thought rather than whingeing about this, I’ll put my money where my mouth is and do something about it.” Mr Bates has already travelled to Weipa with his custom made trailer and will soon head up to Georgetown and Normanton before driving to Mt Isa to garner more support. He is hoping for 200,000
Leslie Creek funding secured Tablelands Regional Council has secured funding to upgrade the Leslie Creek Bridge on Curtain Fig Tree Road under the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program. TRC’s successful application for funding means that the upgrading of the existing single-lane timber bridge over Leslie Creek with a two-lane concrete structure can now proceed The bridge upgrade will increase safety for road users, extend the operational
life of the bridge and maintain a primary regional link from the Gillies Range Road to the MalandaAtherton Road. “This is a great outcome for the community, with local motorists, tourists, businesses and emergency vehicles all benefiting from improved access along Curtain Fig Tree Road,” Mayor Joe Paronella said. A schedule for the Leslie Creek Bridge upgrade works will be announced in due course.

A lot of their decisions hurt us.” Mr Bates said the release of water from Tinaroo Dam recently for the Barron River was just one example and that if the de-
cision makers understood the seriousness of our water situation the legislation would be changed. Mr Bates also said that many of the politicians representing regional Queensland are “happy with the status quo” and he believes that change needs to come from the people. “It’s nearly the 120th anniversary of the federation and it’s time for change,” he said. “This issue should have been pushed a long time ago.”
Mr Bates concedes that his venture will be just the start of a long journey towards a potential referendum but he is hoping that the idea will gather momentum over time. “The whole of regional Queensland is getting a bad deal,” he said. Mr Bates will be driving through Mareeba, Tolga and Atherton throughout this week with his trailer hoping to chat to any locals who want to discuss the idea.
Solar power set to boost region From P1
Chewko Solar Farm will consist of 200,000 solar panels located on a 150 hectare site south west of Mareeba that is currently used for grazing cattle. A Tilt Renewables spokesperson said the Chewko Solar Farm project would “provide an economic boost to supporting business and services within the Mareeba Shire Council” with one or two people employed at the farm for 25 years of operation. Both projects will see energy collected fed back into the national grid network via the high voltage power lines that run through the site and link back to the Ergon Energy Turkinje substation. Once operational, the solar farms will individually produce enough to pow-
er at least 34,000 homes and offset approximately 112,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per annum. If approved the company says they will consult with the community and stakeholder to provide further information and welcome any feedback on the proposal. “As part of this process we will offer to meet face to face with immediate neighbours and interested parties,” they said. “Tilt Renewables has implemented community benefit funds at most of our operating projects and we will be looking at establishing a similar scheme for this project once operational. We will engage with the local community closer to construction on an appropriate format and representative management committee for such a community fund.”

Mt Spurgeon gate unlocked In the interest of public safety, Council last year decided to close Mt Spurgeon Road at Mt Carbine. Council has reviewed the decision after 12 months and this week voted to reopen the road. The gate which was installed to prevent unnecessary damage to the road surface will remain in place; however, the gate will be unlocked for public access.
Mayor Tom Gilmore explained that while the gate will be unlocked, Council will need to restrict access for maintenance when required or when weather conditions are such that use will cause excessive damage. When this occurs appropriate signage will be put up at the start of the road. “Excessive use of Mt Spurgeon Road by the public can leave the road in an
extremely dangerous and impassable condition, effectively isolating the property owners until Council can carry out maintenance repairs,” Cr Gilmore said. “The cost associated with repairing the road is significant, and Council will monitor the condition of the road closely to ensure accessibility and safety for both visitors and property owners especially during the wet season.”

The Tableland Country Music Club honoured life member Paula Whitworth on the weekend at their annual event. Four members that have been with the club for over 20 years were also cel-

Wind farm begins to take shape By Rebecca Wallis
The first Mt Emerald wind turbine will be erected next month, just six months after construction on the site began. Rene Kuypers and Kim Forde from Ratch Australia spoke at a Mareeba Chamber of Commerce meeting last week about how far the development had come in the same week that the first sections of the towers arrived by boat in Cairns. Preparations for their four hour drive up the Palmerston to Walkamin have begun with Malanda Chamber of Commerce organising a ‘welcome’ party as they pass through the town. Mr Kuypers said it had been a challenging six months preparing the site for the turbines which included relocation of the endangered Northern Quoll and the removal of eight live unexploded ordinance devices left there since the area was used in World War II as a training site. “This is widely regarded in the industry today as one of the most challenging builds in the renewable industry,” he said. “We’ve cleared 42km of road just so we can get up there and get the turbines delivered.” The turbines are due to
be ‘switched on’ by this time next year with the blades due to start being installed in a few weeks. The project currently employs over 300 people, 110 of which are locals. Kim Forde says the company is proud of what it has and will be doing within the local community. “$35m will go back to the local community in jobs,” she said. “We’ve bought vehicles from Mareeba Toyota and rented houses locally. “And we really have where possible sourced local people for local jobs and we’ll continue to do that all the way through the process. “All employees are living locally and buying locally while they’re here. So we’re pretty chuffed that we’ve fulfilled that obligation.” It’s not just directly through the building process that Ratch has contributed to the local economy either. “We’ve had a strong commitment to community benefits from day one. “So far we’ve done a few sponsorships around the place and we’ve just been given approval to buy an emergency response trailer for the Atherton Am-

bulance.” Once the wind turbines are operational the company will also be setting up a Community Benefit fund that will contribute to the local community into the future. “That won’t come into effect until the start of 2019 but we want to make sure the benefits stay within a 50km circle around the wind farm site,” said Mrs Forde. The first turbine blade will be brought up the Palmerston Highway on October 9 via a special truck and police escort, The trip will take four to six hours to complete and the same journey has to be repeated over 100 times until all parts have been delivered.
The wind turbines are being held in a storage facility in Cairns until they begin their journey to the Tablelands next month.

TRC ratepayers – we need to get active We are ratepayers of Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and have just received our rate notices for the half year ending 31 December, 2017. Most rate notices have not changed considerably, from the last rate notices.
However four of our farming properties have had land valuation increases of up to 45%. Not only do we wear the valuation dollar increase in extra rates, but TRC also hits us with an extra 0.0388 cents/$ increase. I guess we just consider ourselves lucky that all other business expenses have not increased by 45%.

The majority of hurt most farmers feel, is the fact that we have very little or no say in where our increase in dollars is spent by TRC. It appears that Local Government Association of QLD (LGAQ) has more influence and say, than we ratepayers have, and it is our wellearned money. I am pleading with all
concerned ratepayers who have problems and complaints for and about TRC to get active. Our councillors are not allowed to talk with us about problems, so let us talk amongst ourselves. Council meetings are now only once a month and are sometimes a waste of time attending, as most items of concern appear as

confidential on the agenda. I would strongly encourage those with the time to please attend. Keep a close eye on the action. There is very little or no transparency. Don’t just sit back and complain, please get active. We need to unite and get real action from real locals to run our Shire. The majority of Queensland local councils are governed by LGAQ (including TRC). Please take the time to research LGAQ and the extent of control that LGAQ has over TRC and the entire state of Queensland. We need to make strong objections to our local TRC being governed by LGAQ. Many of our TRC officers, councillors and leaders of departments have been “buttered” up by LGAQ. Wake-up everyone – our local rates dollars are no longer safe. All Rate money is not being spent back in our Shire. LGAQ have control and the majority of say. Unite and get active ratepayers of TRC. Listen to and value our carers We can only grow strong, positive young people from our child protection system with the help and guidance of committed people who open their hearts and homes to our most vulnerable children. Our carers know the kids who come into their care may stay only briefly. But there’s nothing temporary about the love, dedication and stability carers give to vulnerable children when it’s needed the most. While being a foster or kinship carer isn’t easy, it’s an essential part of the system that protects our children. The greatest concern carers have is that they
are not being heard. They want to be valued and, most importantly, viewed as part of the overall care team for children who cannot live at home due to abuse and neglect. Instead of simply listening to carers, Labor’s embattled Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman recently spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on “Partners In Care” workshops in the seven departmental regions. Some of these workshops were poorly attended. I understand the report highlighting the outcomes of these workshops paints a very grim picture of foster carers’ satisfaction. Unfortunately, like every other damning report into this failed Minister and Government, I have no doubt Labor will try to gloss over this document, or outright bury it. Nullinga a long way off The construction of Nullinga Dam on the Walsh River could assist farmers in the long-term but would not enhance the Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Scheme for several years. I believe the immediate and cost-effective solution to the reduction of water allocations is to access water from the North Johnstone River. I agree with Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella and Bob Katter that the North Johnstone diversion is the quickest remedy at the present. But a State Government Minister, Bill Byrne is on the record saying governments are not in the business of building dams for agriculture. They will only fund a dam for urban water use because Mr Byrne said in the Tablelander newspaper two years ago that urban water generates an immediate cash return and there
would be no money for agricultural dams. If the Nullinga feasibility study supports its eventual construction, it might be five to seven years before farmers could pump any irrigation water. After a succession of poor seasons across the Walsh catchment area it could take years to fill a new dam. Farmers are paying dearly for electricity and water but have had their allocations cut severely and combined with the unnecessary release of 300 megalitres a day in August down the Barron River, soon their allocations will be cut again. The dam is at 44 per cent and Cairns is eyeing off Tinaroo dam to add to their water supply so the sooner the Johnstone diversion is done the better. Gordon Rasmussen KAP candidate Cook JULATTEN

owners of the Mareeba IGA centre carpark have requested that Mareeba Shire Council take over their Walsh Street car park turning it into a pay-to-stay facility for shoppers. The move comes after local and visitor cars have been parking there all day, effectively making it hard for genuine shoppers to use
it. Councillors debated the idea at last week’s monthly meeting with Councillor Kevin Davies questioning why it needed to become a council issue. “It’s not caused by the public, it’s caused by other local businesses using the car park,” he said. “I’m a bit dubious about getting involved in a pri-
vate car park.” But Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks said the owners of the centre carpark were well within their rights to make it a payto-park facility themselves, or ask council to take it on. “It works as a revenue source for us and it works for them,” he said. “They can execute a cer-
tain area for other businesses if they wish, allowing them to park there all day.” Councillor Angela Toppin said she received numerous complaints about backpackers parking there all day. Mareeba Shire Council and the landholders will now enter talks to negotiate how the car park will be regulated.

4AM clocks up 50 years on the air
Radio 4AM Mareeba is celebrating 50 years in the broadcast industry this month with many locals remembering the golden era when it first began. The station was first located in Yungaburra before moving to Mareeba in the 1970s. Carl Portella from The Express began his career there as a night time announcer in 1978 earning just $98 a week. “There was a lot of nostalgia around radio then,” he said. “It was a real local station that everyone used to listen to it and you knew all of the presenters. Every-
one loved it.” The station first went to air on September 15, 1967 with a recorded message of greeting from the Australian Broadcasting Control Board‘s Mr M Wright was aired with the signal coming in strong across the Tablelands, Cairns and Mossman. The radio station was a haven for announcers looking to get into the industry with numerous talents both men and women coming through its doors. George Donikian was one of them and went on to be a newsreader for the SBS network and eventually channels 10
and 9 before launching his own production studio. The “middle of the road” music format was very popular with the station broadcasting all the hits and memories from years past. 4AM, currently owned by NQ Radio, has endured over many years and still has a huge listener numbers today. Current breakfast personality Mick Hay entertained some past announcers and messages of congratulations and an anniversary dinner will be held this Saturday night at the Cairns Colonial Club.

Mareeba’s past on display in park A project that has been two years in creation was officially opened last week by Mayor Tom Gilmore and Barron Catchment Care vice chairman Geoff Dickinson. The Meeting of the Waters information signs were erected at Mareeba’s Rotary Park as a way of providing locals and visitors with a slice of local history. The six picture boards display photos and information about the region
and its development from an indigenous settlement through pioneering times, war years and to today. “Pulling together the content was quite a challenging job,” said Mr Dickinson. “There is a lot of information out there about the history of Mareeba and just trying to put that all together and get everyone’s perspectives on paper and making an interesting story at the same time was very
difficult.” The sign recognises the importance of the Barron River to the prosperity of the region and is a partnership between the Barron Catchment Care Group, Mareeba Shire Council and RISE. “It’s an extraordinary exercise in telling a story that is so hard to tell. It’s not an easy thing,” said Cr Gilmore. “Without the Barron River, Mareeba is nothing.
Water was the reason for being here and water is the reason we’re still here. “It really is important that we do these things, recognise our history and cherish it and share it.” Cr Gilmore paid tribute to Rise and the Muluridji people who were the region’s first inhabitants before European settlement. The word Mareeba is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning meeting of the waters.

Helping keep the Cane Rail alive The first ever Comeng diesel locomotive built for the Queensland cane industry is among a group of retired locomotives that have been donated to the Herberton Rail museum. The three locomotives have been sitting in storage at the Mulgrave Mill since being decommissioned several years ago. They are the 16-tonne Loco No 2, a locomotive built by Commonwealth Engineering Queensland – an Australian engineering company that designed and built railway locomotives until its demise in 1990 and delivered to the mill in 1955. Two six tonne locomotives – Loco No 10 that was built by EMB Baldwin in NSW and delivered to Mulgrave Mill in 1964 and a Simplex Loco, built by Motor Rail in England in 1954 and used initially at Hambledon Mill before being transferred to Mulgrave in 1991 – have also found themselves a new home. The locos have been rehomed to the Herberton

The $1.3 million project is funded by the Queensland Government’s Building our Region program and Mareeba Shire Council.

Jenny has a broad range of experience across many mediums; she creates 3D pavement art, trompe l’oeil (trick of the eye) murals, portraits, visual minutes, commissioned works and sculptures to name but a few. In addition to exhibiting and teaching art workshops, Jenny is also Australia’s most highly awarded pavement artist. Her work is celebrated internationally. She brings a great deal of enthusiasm to all her work. She is meticulous, vivacious, and interacts happily with audiences who are attracted to her live art in progress.

NAIDOC community day
MORE than 400 locals came out to Arnold Park in Mareeba last Tuesday to enjoy the ‘NAIDOC Family Fun Day’ festivities during the school holidays. Mareeba PCYC was the driving force behind the event that saw a number of Indigenous Dancers performing native dances, as well as a jumping castle and face painting for the kids, among many other activities. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services came along and handed out fire prevention material, but their tent was nearly deserted compared to the line up for a ride in Little Squirt (pictured right). The Queensland Police Service couldn’t be outdone by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, so they brought along a Police bike that was a great hit, not only with the kids but adults as well.

rOad again Queensland’s next generation of young drivers will be the first in the world to undergo an online learner driver education program before they get behind the wheel. The PrepL eLearning program will take learners through a 4-6 hour online interactive course that includes simulated driving scenarios and powerful real-life interviews with those affected by fatal car crashes. PrepL is being developed in collaboration with the Department of Transport and Main Roads by Croomo, a pioneering Brisbane technology company. Croomo Chief Growth Officer Daniel Bermingham said a team of up to 20 designers, artists, developers and strategists had been working on PrepL for almost two years. “The Queensland Government is putting itself at the forefront of road safety in Australia and the world,” Mr Bermingham said. “Last year, 250 people died on Queensland roads alone, so I believe that PrepL has the

PrepL is now undergoing advanced testing and this month 300 Queensland teenagers will take part in the first large-scale pilot program. Mr Bermingham said Croomo had used its experience of developing interactive safety training programs for Australia’s biggest resources companies to develop PrepL. John Nucifora, one of the Far North Queensland directors for the Australian Mango Industry Association (AMIA) invites all mango growers to attend the annual AMIA meeting at Alvise Brazzale’s property on Thursday, 28 September at 398 Piemonte Road from 5pm, which will be followed by a BBQ. “At the meeting we will have growers and some of the retailers namely Woolworths, Coles and Harris Farm Markets and various wholesalers,” said Mr Nucifora. “I urge all growers to attend because I feel that these meetings are a part of all mango growers’ business.” One of the topics for the meeting includes the AMIA looking for a possible levy increase in the near future. “I would like input and discussion on the possible levy increase,” said Mr Nucifora. “The AMIA do this roadshow to communicate with the local industry in each region. A COMMITMENT to efficiency and innovation has seen Sam Collins embrace 21st century farming. From his modern packing shed to an automated irrigation system, the Dimbulah man takes pride in his expanding mango and avocado operation. Mr Collins was a nominee in this year’s Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Awards but was pipped to the post by Mareeba farmer Matthew Perkes. Originally from a Malanda dairy farming family, Mr Collins spent years in Papua New Guinea running his own workshop as a heavy equipment fitter before making the decision to come back home in 2002. Deciding to strike out on his own and give horticultural farming a crack, Mr Collins, together with wife Kylie and his growing family, purchased what is now called Blushing Acres just outside Dimbulah. While the early years were tough as he learnt the ropes, Mr Collins’ early decision to switch to automated irrigation proved a godsend, increasing water efficiency and producing a stellar crop of mangoes and avocadoes. “That was a huge labour cost and the efficiencies we picked up by automating were huge,” he said. “We’ve put in capac-

The couple’s three children – Harry, Jessica and
Will – also help in the packing shed when home during school holidays, with as many of 38 staff employed at the height of the season. “It’s team effort involving the whole family,” Mrs Collins said. “I love it because it’s a challenge.” Mr Collins’ father Rod, an experienced cattle farmer who has been involved in dairy and coffee in the past, is also on hand to provide advice when asked. As for the future, Mr
Collins believes the agricultural industry is in for an exciting time. “The new technologies which are coming out now are just incredible,” Mr Collins said. “In another 10 years, the way we farm now will be completely different. There will be robots starting to do jobs. It’s incredible with some of advances being made in automation. “It’s very rewarding when you grow a good crop.”

1. Preheat oven to 200C. 2. Toss pumpkin with olive oil, salt and pepper. Spread on baking tray, bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, flip, then bake for a further 7 - 10 minutes until golden but not mushy. Loosen pumpkin with egg flip, then if serving salad at room temperature, leave to cool. 3. Shake Dressing in a jar. Taste and adjust to taste. 4. Toast pine nuts in a dry skillet over medium heat until light golden and it smells nutty. Remove pine nuts from skillet as soon as it’s ready. 5. Place Spinach in a bowl. Drizzle with a bit of dressing then toss. Add pumpkin, just a bit of feta and pine nuts, then gently toss just to disperse the feta. 6. Transfer to serving plate. Sprinkle over remaining feta and pine nuts. Just before serving, drizzle with remaining dressing (dressing doesn’t stay on baby spinach well, so worth drizzling at end). Serve!

Mount Emerald Wind Farm Pty Ltd (ABN 19 149 050 322) has applied to the Regulator for a generation authority under the Electricity Act 1994 (the Act), in respect of a 180.45 megawatt wind farm. The wind farm will be known as the Mount Emerald Wind Farm and will be located about 20km south of the town of Mareeba and approximately 15km north of the town of Atherton. The Mareeba Leagues Club was the venue for a recent reunion of the 1992 Gladiator’s premiership winning team coached by Andrew Walters. Showing some old battle scars, extra kilos and a lot less hair, the former Gators reminisced about their win over the Atherton Roosters, in an all Table-
land final. Walters said he was made to feel very welcome by the Mareeba supporters at the time. “We had a good mix of local players and only three or four that came from out of town, but it was a very strong team,” said Walters. “We all got on well as a unit and clicked when it
mattered. “I’m currently in my home town of Ipswich running a car wash down there, but I do try to keep in touch with what’s happening with the Gladiators from time to time. “Seeing the Leagues Club here now is very impressive, we didn’t have all this back then.”

With spring racing in full swing, more than 1000 racegoers turned out for Atherton Annuals on Saturday. Perfect weather and fabulous fashions meant punters and those there to enjoy the fun of a race day were not left disappointed with all day action on and off track. Race five of the day, the Atherton Cup, saw Stable Surprize, ridden by John Lambie and trained by Trevor Rowe, storm home to take the annuals race day honours.

Two young kids from Mareeba walked away with gold medals from the Sunstate Amateur Boxing League Queensland titles held in Edmonton on September 16. Matthew Carroll and Kurtis Bryde had a hugely successful weekend competing in their weight classes. Matthew Carroll won two gold medals - one in the 44.5kg then stepped up in weight in the 48kg and won the gold in that class too. “Matthew came out strong in the first round,” said coach Wayne Bryde from Sitchromes Boxing Mareeba. “The second round was very tough, Matthew was
giving great body shots to his opponent and third round Matthew took it all the way to the bell and got a unanimous points decision with five judges all scoring Matthews way and we won the gold. He’s now the current Queensland champion in his weight class.” Mr Bryde’s son Kurtis also went home a gold medal winner. “He went straight into the finals and fought a much taller guy who was very talented but Kurtis’ training paid off and he won every round significantly by five judges in the 51kg division and took out the gold,” said Mr Bryde. “It was his first win of the year and he is the current Queensland champion.
I am very proud as a father.” Mr Bryde is also dad to four times Queensland Champion Zachary Mulholland who is retired after 40 fights but still coaches at the club. The boys will now focus on an up-coming local club before heading to the Nationals at the end of November where they’ll represent Queensland. “They are absolutely ecstatic about it,” said Mr Bryde. “I’m really happy that some boys from a country town have again another chance to make a name in boxing. Amateur boxing is very strong in Mareeba. All the good champions come from Mareeba.”
Surprise award at FNQ Football presentation FNQ Football held its annual presentation night on Saturday, September 23. The gala event held at the Pullman Resort in Cairns, brought the regular season to an end, however there is still the small matter of the Crad Evans match to be held on October 14 in Cairns. The Mareeba Bulls faired lightly on the night with most of the accolades going to individuals from other clubs and rightly so as the bulls had an uneventful year. In the premier division Joshua Taylor from Innisfail was named player of the year and Golden boot for 2017, while Southside Comets Jack Riley collected the Goalkeeper of the year. There was one award that the Bulls collected much to the astonishment of the recipient and the
