The annual school swimming carnival last Friday didn’t stop these dedicated school leaders from finalising plans for their first fundraiser of the year.

The Mareeba State High School student council annually holds a Valentine’s Day fundraiser by selling roses at the school.

This year they are hoping to sell around 50 roses at $3 each to students and say it’s not just for sweethearts but friends as well.

“We are promoting friendship

roses this year,” said school captain Giulia Rogato.

Valentine’s Day is a special occasion and it’s a great fundraiser for the student council. The money raised will be donated to a charity of their choosing.

100 reasons for Dot to celebrate

Fighting fit and excited for the weekend’s celebrations, you would never know Dot McKeown has just turned 100.

Up until 10 months ago the great grandmother was living in her own home in Atherton almost entirely self-sufficient, but now happily resides at Malanda Ozcare where a birthday party was held in her honour on Saturday, February 10, two days after she reached the impressive milestone.

“She was really excited about her birthday,” said eldest son Bruce.

“We had lots of friends and family come and celebrate with us.”

Dot was born in South Johnstone in 1918 – the same year that World War I ended. King George V was still the king of England and her birth came just days after a cyclone killed 30 people in Mackay.

Dot spent much of her

youth in South Johnstone before moving to the Tablelands when she was 20.

She worked at the Atherton Hotel (The Stump) as a bed maid, in a dry cleaners and also at The Carrington Hotel as a cook before getting married shortly after to Robert (Bob) McKeown who sadly passed away in 1979.

Dot also worked for the peanut board for a while and then went on to have three children – Bruce, Susan and Glenn.

“She gets around on her own still, she just uses a walker,” said Bruce.

“But she’s still all there and knows what’s going on.”

Dot was reportedly a keen gardener in her hey day and although she misses having her own home, she has made lots of friends at the Malanda care home.

Around 16 family and friends joined her on Saturday for a party and helped her celebrate making it to 100 years old.

IT was a special day for Mareeba Shire Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen when his hard work and advocacy for the rural and regional communities of the shire was acknowledged at the opening of the Tate River Crossing last Friday.

Councillor Pedersen joined Member for Cook Cynthia Lui and Mayor Tom Gilmore to officially open the crossing which was jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council.

The causeway was officially named the ‘Alan Pedersen Crossing’ in recognition of Cr Pedersen,

who lobbied for years for the upgrade of the causeway to improve accessibility for those living in remote areas.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said by the end of this term Cr Pedersen will have served for 15 years on Council and has been very passionate about supporting the remote areas of the Shire.

“During that period he has been an extremely vocal advocate for the rural and regional community of our shire, arguing successfully for budget consideration of road maintenance and capital works; but more particularly for better

access during the wet season, and for putting concrete bases in gullies and creeks,” he said.

The new Tate River Crossing has improved the accessibility for cattle stations transporting cattle to the sale yards.

Helping hand for the needy

A retail store with heavily discounted groceries for people in need has officially opened its doors in Mareeba.

The Community Pantry is a QITE Work for the Dole jobactive project funded by the federal government.

Users can get a referral card from any community organisation and then head to the pantry to purchase essentials such as milk, toothpaste and fruit and veg grown in the Community Garden.

“There’s a massive need for it,” said Francesca Macfarlane, QITE’s Work for the Dole broker.

“We’ve had it open in Atherton for a while, but people have not been able to travel between so having one here means Mareeba people can use it.”

Alongside offering cheap groceries, the pantry is also giving locals an opportunity to learn some val-

uable employment skills.

“They work here as well, learning cash register skills, learning stock taking skills, and day to day interaction of retail,” said Ms Macfarlane.

“Some of these people have never worked a day in their lives, so this gives them skills so they can then go and get a job.

“The feedback we’re getting is that they’re feeling like they’re doing something that’s worthwhile.

“Going to work can be scary if you’ve never done anything like that before, it’s a whole other world.”

The pantry has been open for a few weeks at 52 Rankin Street and also stocks some handmade wooden toys made by Work for the Dole participants in Ravenshoe.

The Community Pantry will be open every Wednesday from 9am to 4pm.

Non-perishable food items can be donated to the pantry or any QITE centre on the Tablelands.

Neighbours in uproar as windfarm gets go ahead

A Lakeland land owner is going to fight to halt the construction of a $200 million wind farm near her property after it was given state government approval last week.

Joy Marriott claims employees of Windlab Limited “have been careless with the truth” about the construction of the project that will include 30 towers up to 240m high.

The Lakeland Wind Farm will be located 60kms south west of Cooktown on the Cape York Peninsula.

“Because it is code assessable, I don’t have any rights to object,” said Ms Marriott.

“So I’m going to the planning and environment court to seek a declaration.”

Ms Marriott is con-

structing a caravan park on her property which borders the proposed wind farm.

She claims one of the turbines will sit 800-900 metres from her house site and while the wind was blowing and the blades were turning, the ambient noise associated would have a detrimental effect on her and her family, park visitors and domestic animals.

“If it goes up I would have lost my property rights,” she said. “And my property value will go down.”

The wind farm is set to produce around 100 megawatts of power for North Queensland, connected via the national electricity grid.

Developers say it will bring significant investment to the region and is expected to create approximately 200 jobs during its 12 month construction.

“Lakeland Wind Farm is an exceptional project and we eagerly anticipate starting construction this year,” said Windlab Chief Executive Officer. Roger Price. “Working with the community is always key for us; we are therefore particularly pleased that we found a solution that aligns neighbour plans, planning code and project requirements.

“With construction of Kennedy Energy Park (Stage I) near Hughenden now in full swing and development of Stage II on the way, Windlab and North Queensland are contributing to securing affordable, diverse and reliable electricity for the benefit of all Queenslanders,” he said.

Anger over van park fence

A decision by Mareeba Shire Council to erect a fence outside of the boundary of a caravan park on Egan Street has caused backlash from neighbouring residents.

In November last year a meeting was held to address issues arising from Riverside Caravan Park, with complaints made to both council and local law enforcement officers.

It was suggested that a fence erected around the boundary of the facility would reduce much of the

anti-social behaviour and on December 20 councillors voted to allocate $32,000 for the fence to go ahead.

But by the end of the month a survey found that existing fencing on Egan and Loudon Street was outside of the boundary and that it would be more costeffective to erect the new fence in the same place as the old one.

“The presence of a number of buried services and proximity of three temporary structures within the caravan park, meant it would be most practical to install the new fence along

the current alignment, outside the property boundary,” wrote officers in their report to councillors presented on January 24.

“This method would also allow the allocated budget to be met but may present issues whereby Council knowingly installs a fence outside its property boundary.”

Councillors agreed and moved a motion to go ahead with building the new fence outside of the park’s official boundary. The alternative would mean “removing and reestablishing structures elsewhere in the park” estimat-

ed to add a further $50,000 to the project cost.

Claire Mackney, a neighbouring resident of the caravan park is unhappy with the decision.

“Mayor Gilmore often speaks about ‘community standards’ in the newspapers.

“I very much doubt that council would allow the average Joe to extend his private boundary to the edge of the road simply to suit themselves,” she said.

“Council are not above legislation. Having reviewed the act, there is no provision for council to actually allow for people

to reside within a road reserve.”

Ms Mackney wrote to the State Asset Management, Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy to express her concerns and ask for advice.

“My primary concern is that the road is simply not wide enough for the current traffic use and pedestrian traffic,” she said.

“Having watched the installation of the fence this week, I note that it has been placed further back from the road. The positive in that is that pedestrians will have free movement off the bitumen.”

Cook CEO gets pushed out Cook Shire Council is under new interim leadership after councillors voted not to renew Tim Cronin’s contract.

Mr Burton was most recently in the top role at Townsville City Council for eight years, and Pine Rivers Council for six years, with

“We are always trying to act sensibly and do the right thing,” he said.

Ms Mackney did say that issues at the caravan park have improved since the meeting in November

24 years as a council chief executive under his belt and 40-plus years in local government.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the community and working with them and our staff and Councillors,” Mr Burton said.

“I’m here with my wife Lee, and we both love bushwalking and fishing, and are hoping to have time to get out and explore the shire while we are here.”

Since retiring from Townsville council in 2016, Mr Burton has filled several interim CEO positions including at Fraser Coast and North Burnett councils, and other local government project and advisory roles, including at Doomadgee for three months.

“Ray’s extensive experience in local government, and over 20 years as a CEO, will stand us in good stead,” Cr Scott said.

Katter releases tell all book Controversial MP Bob Katter has released a book that lifts the lid on what goes on behind the scenes of one of Australia’s most outspoken politicians.

Loved and hated in equal measures, there is no denying that Bob Katter has some strong opinions but is underneath it all a very private person. Until now he has been very reluctant to speak about the people and events that have shaped his life.

Conversations with Katter allowed him free-range to raise issues that he believes are important for the nation to address. He also believes that politicians in all levels of government have much to answer for and speaks openly about his own disappointments which weigh heavily on him to this day.

There are many personal

and political revelations in his book.

Here is the Bob Katter who is concerned about CO2 and supports cuttingedge green energy initiatives; the whitefella from Cloncurry who identifies closely with the First Australians; the gun-owner who reads hunting magazines as well as seminal works such as Robert Ardrey’s Territorial Imperative; the man who can argue a case by quoting from Karl Marx’s Das Kapital and believes that Herman De Soto’s The Mystery of Capital is one of the most important publications in the last 100 years.

Bob Katter, the scared, skinny little kid who had to learn to stand up to bullies in the schoolyard says he was toughened by rugby league and life in the bush as a miner and cattleman.

He was also emotionally

hardened by political life in State and Federal politics.

But, this same man, who has an almost fearsome reputation in parliamentary debate, found it too difficult to talk about his mother during the Conversations with Katter. It was just too overwhelming to relate the vital role she played in the Katter family.

RADF grants open OVER the last three years, Mareeba Shire Council has funded 33 community arts, heritage and cultural initiatives, through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

The program is delivered as a partnership between the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Mareeba Shire Council to enhance cultural and creative experiences across the shire.

Chair of the RADF committee, Cr Angela Toppin said each year Mareeba Shire Council provides community grants to art-

ists, arts, heritage and cultural workers, groups and organisations throughout the shire.

“The Mareeba RADF program has contributed significantly to providing opportunities for amateur artists and the general public to participate in arts and cultural workshops,” she said.

“Creative opportunities are essential to the cultural vitality and wellbeing of the community by decreasing social isolation and sense of belonging to the community.”

Cr Toppin is encourag-

ing local artists and community groups to apply for a RADF Community Grant.

Projects must have a strong developmental or participatory focus and may include activities such as; development of new works, cultural tourism, events, collections, heritage protection, performances, placemaking, professional development and more.

Fong On Bay camping area has been closed after vandals trashed it over the Australia Day long weekend.

Vandals trash Tinaroo camp site Rangers have closed a section of Fong On Bay camping area in Danbulla State Forest on Lake Tinaroo due to vandalism by campers over the Australia Day long weekend that left part of the campground unusable.

Principal Ranger Andrew Millerd said vehicles had been used to do “doughnuts” through the campground at high speed, destroying large areas of turf that would take some time to recover.

“This type of activity will not be tolerated,” Mr Millerd said.

“Families nearby reported the activities and that they had feared for their safety, as well having their camping weekend ruined.

“Not only were those campers impacted, but until the damage is repaired, this usually popular site has been spoiled for everyone else.

The maximum penalty for vandalising a state forest is $2523 per offence.

On-the-spot fines can also be imposed.

Mr Millerd said QPWS had extra ranger patrols on the Tableland over the long weekend.

“Rangers and Police also patrolled Lake Eacham in Crater Lakes National Park,” he said.

“Despite the wet weather, the lake was very popular on Australia Day. Most visitors had a great day, were well behaved and complied with our request not to take drink containers onto the lake.

“We want everyone to be able to visit our beautiful parks and forests, look after them, and enjoy themselves safely.

“Rangers and Police are investigating the Fong On Bay camping area incident with information provided by other campers, and we will continue to work hard and patrol these areas to stop disrespectful, destructive or dangerous behaviour in our parks and forests.”

McKinlay swims to success The mighty McKinlay Dragons have once again claimed victory at the annual Mareeba State High School inter-house swimming carnival.

Held at the Mareeba Swimming Pool last Friday, the McKinlay Dragons have been champions since 2014.

The day also saw four school records broken.

Atherton off to a great start

Atherton pulled out all stops to have a wicket up Saturday to kick off their two-day match against United at Loder Park.

Atherton won the toss and sent United in to bat in fine but uncertain conditions. Luke Parnell picked up the first wicket with a caught and bowled, bowling a tidy line to finish 2-22 off his 12 overs. The wick-

et looked to have a bit in it for the spinners and Atherton capitalised, restricting United's scoring in a slow paced game. A last wicket partnership of 40 off 20 overs helped United to 133, with Atherton claiming the final wicket in the 75th over.

Atherton resume their 1st innings on Saturday 1 down for 57.

With the 2nd Grade side

struggling for numbers, the boys mustered up a team to travel to Miniecon-Gregory oval. It was a tough day for Atherton who elected to bat and focused on occupying the crease for time against the Mulgrave Punjabi bowling attack. Captain Owen Daley led the way with runs and a wicket. Both matches continue this Saturday.

The Atherton Senior Roosters will kick-off their 100 year with a rugby league 7s match up against Babinda at Barlow Park this Saturday night during the halftime breaks of the two main games.

Northern Pride and a Cairns Connection side play at 5.30pm followed by the Cowboys vs West Tigers NRL trial at 7.30pm.

Atherton players Ned Blackman and Jack Willis have been selected for the Cairns Connection side. Roosters head coach Graham Clark said the 7s format was something new for his team but had created plenty of interest.

“None of our players have played this (7s) before so it is going to be a whole new ball game”Clark said.

“We have named a young squad with heaps

of speed and the big thrill for them is that they will be playing in front of a crowd which expected to be well over 10,000”.

While the Senior Roosters are presently celebrating their centenary, locals in Babinda also have 100 years of football to celebrate in 2018.

Although the Babinda Senior Club disbanded in 1999 they have continued to produce a very strong junior club and keep the rugby league dream alive in that area.

The Senior Roosters are also booked to host 2018 pre-season trials at Atherton against Suburbs on March 10 and Mareeba on March 17.

Mareeba pulls off win Mareeba’S 3rd Grade cricket side pulled off the win of the season to beat top of the table and undefeated Rovers at the weekend.

Rovers won the toss and batted first to score 161 with young Jarrod France opening the bowling and taking 2/21 and next best Bomber Adams with 1/12.

Mareeba’s batting was outstanding with match winning innings’s from Brad Hogan 65 not out and Under 16 Player Zac Myrteza 34.

Mareeba needed six runs off the last over to win and Nic Turner hit a huge 6 off the 1st ball of the over to take the win – a great performance by the whole team.

Mareeba’s Under 12’s played Atherton (3) at Morrow Park with Atherton batting first and scoring 146.

Best bowlers for Mareeba were Mac Cureton 2/17 and Damon Leeds 1/12. Mareeba batted well and were 15 runs short of Atherton’s total at the end

The Under-14 Team lost to Rovers after being bowled out for 83.

Jamie Curcio showed some good form with the bat to top score with 27.

Rovers then scored 8/146 off their 32 overs. Best bowlers for Mareeba were Tristan Lopez 2/10 and Jace Cureton 1/10.
