Crossing over the boundaries of fitness

Pushing through the stigma of disability one burpee at a time, Stevie Madell, 22 is fast becoming an inspiration in the world of Crossfit.

Stevie, from Mareeba, has Down Syndrome and intellectual impairments, but has a passion for fitness that is fuelled by an unlikely friendship.

Two and a half months ago his weekly sessions at Mareeba Swimming Pool were curtailed when it was closed for refurbishment.

Keen to keep him active, support worker Trudy Prince from FlexiChoice asked Simon ‘Red’ Cockrem if it would be ok for Stevie to join in one of his Crossfit classes.

The results have been overwhelming.

“Since he’s been coming here with Red it’s given him a new boost of confidence,” said Stevie’s mum Margaret Madell.

“It’s opened new doors for him. The different sorts of training that Red does with him and having everyone else here – he loves it because he’s part of it.”

Coach Red Cockrem has taken Stevie under his wing and opened his business – Crossfit HBZ 4880 – for free to him for his weekly sessions. He’s now one of his favourite clients.

“It’s my best day having him here,” said Red. “That’s why I opened Crossfit – it was more to try and change people and put a smile on peoples’ face and to do that, to see the people come in and out with a big smile – you know you’ve made their day.”

Stevie completes the same daily set of exercises that everyone else does – using support worker Trudy as a visual aide for each one.

“If you show him, he’s very good at picking things up,” said Red. “He comes in and just kills it.”

Crossfit HBZ 4880 has been open in Mareeba for two and half years and is capitalising on the worldwide popularity of Crossfit.

Unlike a gym the exercises are based around strength and conditioning consisting of constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.

“Everyone can give it a go, we even have classes now for mums and kids who are all loving the community feel that crossfit offers, said Red. “If you really have a passion for something and then you have a group of people who are passionate as well, that can feel so good and that’s why he loves coming here,” said Margaret.

Bulk billing GPs to remain at hospital Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) last week confirmed that a bulkbilled GP service will remain at Mareeba Hospital for the time being, although they cannot confirm whether this will continue indefinitely.

Funding from the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) was due to

run out at the end of this month but after an extensive consultation process with the Mareeba community and stakeholders, they have confirmed that the service will remain for now.

The service will be situated in the same location as the clinic currently operated by Mareeba Hospital but will be independently

owned and operated by Amaroo Medical.

Cheryl Harneshfeger from Amaroo Medical told The Express last month she wanted to offer an interim solution to the community before her own Community Clinic opened next year.

A spokesperson from CHHHS said contractual arrangements “had not been finalised” and that

they could not confirm whether the service will continue beyond the opening of Amaroo’s Community Clinic which will offer pension card holders a bulk-billing GP service.

“During this process we have examined several models of care to ensure improved primary health care services for the people of Mareeba and this

is a great example of how working together can help achieve a positive outcome,” said Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Clare Douglas.

“Hospitals are best placed to provide acute care. The new clinic will provide primary care services and the two facilities will work closely to ensure

the people of Mareeba receive the best possible health care.”

The Health Service held a number of meetings in Mareeba along with Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN).

Ms Douglas said arrangements are currently being finalised for the clinic, and further details would be available soon.

Racing into the Annuals

Dust off your hat and shine up your shoes, this weekend Mareeba Turf Club will come alive with fashionable fillies and anxious punters hoping for a win at the glitzy Mareeba Annuals race day.

Over 1000 people are expected to make their way to Mareeba Turf Club for what is one of the most exciting race days on the local calendar.

“It’s a very prestigious event,” said John Thurlow from the Turf Club.

“People come from all over to watch the races and take part as we have the $10,000 prize.”

The five race meet includes the hotly contested Mareeba Annuals Cup – a prize that local trainer Alex Maliff is hoping to get his hands on.

Mr Malliff will have two or three horses running on the day and one in the Cup. “I’d love to win the Cup – I’ve won one as an owner before but not as a trainer,” he said.

“I’ve won a Malanda Cup and an Atherton Cup – so one from here would just be the icing on the cake.”

Mr Malliff has been a horse trainer for three years and was previously a refrigeration mechanic.

“As soon as I bought shares in my first racehorse that was it for me,” he said.

“I worked as a strapper for 10 years then I decided to get my trainers license.”

Mr Malliff says maiden runner Canon King will be “hard to beat”, not that his confidence will do much to stop the nerves from kicking in on the day.

“I don’t deal with nerves very well,” he laughed.

“I played football a lot in my younger years and I have never felt nerves like I get at races. It’s like having the weight of the world on your shoulders – not just for the owners but all of the punters having bet on your horse as well. It’s really stressful.”

“I can’t wait for the Annuals,” she said. “It's such a fun event to see beautiful horses and catch up with so many people.”

Whitney is no stranger to competition on and off the track as she has previously worked as a racehorse strapper and is now a regular entrant in the local fashions comps. She is also a keen horse rider, competing locally in show horse events on her beautiful exracehorse, Teddy.

She will be just one of many racegoers this weekend hoping to go home with a winners sash and one of the prizes generously donated by local businesses.

Categories include kids, couples, ladies, gents and a millinery award. Anyone looking to take part should head to the main stage between the second and third races.

Gates open at 11am and entry is $10 for adults.

Two FNQ beauties vie for Queen title

TWO Tableland women will this weekend be vying for the title of Rodeo Queen of Australia alongside entrants from around the country in a star-studded Gold Coast ceremony.

Cherie Bramich from Herberton and Brooke Buckingham from Dimbulah have spent months preparing for the event which will propel them to national fame and the chance to take part in one of the world’s biggest rodeos – the Calgary Stampede.

The girls will be judged

on how well they represent the sport of rodeo and throughout this week will be assessed on horse riding skills, their personality and how they conduct themselves in public.

The experience will be a huge eye-opener for 19-year-old Brooke.

“I’ve never been to the Gold Coast before and I’ve never been ice skating or to a theme park so I’m really excited,” she said.

“I just want to get there and enjoy myself.”

Brooke is no stranger to the rodeo scene. An accomplished barrel racer in her own right, she is also

the granddaughter of Les Buckingham who won no less than 23 national rodeo titles and was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame.

She wants to become the next Australian Rodeo Queen to increase the image of rodeo.

“So many people don’t really understand how passionate we are about it,” she said.

“I want people to realise our animals are well taken care of and that it is such a welcoming sport.”

For Cherie Bramich, 34, this won’t be her first stab at the title.

The mum of one from

Herberton is the current Runner Up Rodeo Queen of Australia and ambassador for the North Queensland Bull Riding Series.

Currently studying a diploma in youth work, Cherie is passionate about everything the rodeo stands for.

“The Quest provides a life changing experience, creates new friends and opens up many opportunities to promote such a great sport,” she said.

During the Quest entrants are required to raise $5000 to be eligible for the title of Australian Rodeo Queen. There are other

titles within the competition including 1st Runner Up, 2nd Runner up and 3rd Runner Up, Miss Horsemanship and Miss Fundraiser.

Over the past 12 months the girls have taken part in activities including a three day ‘queen camp’ in NSW visiting the Australian heritage rodeo museum. During the camp the girls learnt about deportment, public speaking, how to organise grand entries and interviewing techniques.

This week they are taking part in ice skating, visiting Movie World and Time Zone.

218 businesses respond to power survey Businesses have responded strongly to a request to have their say on the impact of rising electricity bills on their business and their community.

Coordinator of the Queensland Electricity Users Network (QEUN) Jennifer Brownie said it was

encouraging to see such a diverse range of Mareeba businesses keen to voice their opinion on electricity costs.

“Our target is 200 businesses in each of four council areas in regional Queensland. The survey was launched in Mareeba

and surpassed the target with 218 responses,” Ms Brownie said.

The QEUN will provide the ACCC with a report on the Mareeba survey results.

“There is a perception by government and policy makers that only certain types of businesses are af-

fected by rising electricity bills,” said Ms Brownie.

“We wanted to dispel this myth by demonstrating that bills are impacting on a range of businesses. The QEUN has now launched the survey in Mt Isa, the Whitsundays and the Southern Downs.

FOUR trailblazing farmers from the Mareeba area have been nominated in this year’s Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award.

Held annually by the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association (MDFVGA), the award aims to continue the legacy of the late Mr Nastasi by recognising outstanding innovation and exceptional leadership in

the horticultural industry across the Atherton Tablelands and Lakeland area.

Matthew Perkes, Elio Quintieri, Sam Collins and Jose Caamano have all been nominated for this year’s Award, each bringing their own unique innovation and leadership to the industry.

The panel comprises of MDFVGA president Joe Moro, MDFVGA treasurer Gerard Kath, Landmark Mareeba/Tolga branch

manager Thomas Mugford and Visy Mareeba sales manager Wayne McKeich.

Mr Moro said the high calibre of this year’s nominees for the Award would make it difficult to pick a winner.

“Each nominee brings something unique to the local horticultural industry and should be congratulated for leading the way in their respective areas,” he said.

“We’ve had some out-

standing nominees in the past and this year will be no different.”

Mr Moro said horticultural innovation was crucial to driving the industry forward in the 21st century.

“In order to remain competitive, our industry must be able to overcome any future challenges,” he said.

The winner will be announced at the annual MDFVGA gala dinner this Friday night in Mareeba.

Based on the studies of neuroscientists, the six-part documentary series has pairs of estranged people meet again, without speaking, to look each other in the eye to see if the encounter can lead to a rapprochement.

Producers filmed her at home in Mareeba talking about the breakdown of her marriage to police officer Gary and how she regretted walking away three years ago.

The showed aired on Wednesday night and viewers watched as Sue broke down in tears as she sat silently opposite her ex-husband.

“It was really amazing,” she said.

“I just looked at him and could see everything from

our past and all the wonderful times we had. It was beautiful.”

The couple chose to re-enter the room and talk through the experience, ultimately agreeing to try again to rekindle their relationship.

Speaking to The Express after the show aired, Sue said that the experience had helped to reconnect the pair but that their relationship was a work in progress.

Learning and fun in the great outdoors

Kindy kids at QT’s Early Learning Centre in Mareeba enjoyed their outdoor classroom last week.

QT’s Early Learning Centre in Mareeba was one of almost 2000 primary and kindergarden schools across the nation that spent last Thursday enjoying Australia’s first Outdoor Classroom Day. Over 200,000 kids took part in the experiment to help increase the amount of time kids spend playing outdoors.

Research has shown that an overwhelming number of Australian children spend less than two hours of play outside more than a third less than previous generations.

OMO has partnered with NGO Nature Play to bring Australia’s first na-

tional Outdoor Classroom Day, as part of its “Dirt is Good” campaign, which has put the spotlight on the importance of outdoor play in children’s development.

Griffin Longley, CEO of Nature Play says, “Teachers and parents and anyone who values the importance of outdoor play for kids can still get involved. Classes can be taken all year round, so encourage your child’s school to learn more about outdoor play everyone can do something to make sure children across Australia experience the significant benefits of playing and learning outdoors now and for their future.”

On Friday, August 25, Hurricane Harvey made its way ashore on the central Gulf Coast of Texas with winds of 125 miles per hour. The nearly 17 million residents in the path of the storm will be dealing with the aftermath for weeks and possibly months to come. Lions Clubs International has responded with emergency catastrophe grant in the amount of US$100,000. The grant will allow Lions in the area of impact to provide life-saving supplies of food, water, blankets and other necessities. We never know when or where disaster will strike. The LAND Workshops will improve farm safety Queensland’s agricultural industries are working together to help farm businesses reduce risks and increase efficiency and compliance through a one-day workshop in Mareeba on October 17.

The Workplace Essentials workshops, funded by the Queensland Government and coordinated through the Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network (QAWN), will focus on providing farm employers and team leaders with practical information and resources to enhance workplace health and safety and people management skills.

Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) President Stuart Armitage encouraged farm businesses to take advantage of the subsidised training specifically tailored for farm employers and employees.

“There are approximately 1700 workplace injuries within agriculture per year. This is unacceptable and why we want to help farm businesses get up-to-speed on their safety obligations.

“It is important that all levels of farm leadership are aware of their obligations and the practices that can be adopted to better control risks and prevent future workplace acci-

dents.

“These workshops are a clear example of industry proactively addressing sector wide workplace health and safety issues.”

The last round of Workplace Essentials workshops, which focused on employment management practices and compliance, were a resounding success attracting more than 230 participants statewide.

“Feedback indicated that farm employers wanted the next series to focus not only on workplace health and safety but also supervisory skills. These elements are all covered in the upcoming workshops that aim to provide farm frontline staff with a much clearer understanding of workplace health and safety obligations regulations, supervisor responsibilities, performance management, and how to managing bullying and conflict constructively,” said Mr Armitage.

The Mareeba workshop will be held at the Jackaroo Motel on October 17, from 8:45am to 4:00pm.

Construction of the $75 million Green Power Plant at Tableland Mill is progressing well. Work on the major component, the boiler, will start soon.

Construction starts on green energy power plant

Civil works for MSF Sugar’s new $75 million green energy power plant at the Tableland Mill have been completed, paving the way for work to start on the major component – a highpressure boiler which will turn biomass waste into energy.

Construction of the plant started in May of this year and is on track to be completed by July 2018.

The plant will use a 100 per cent renewable sugarcane fibre, known as bagasse, to produce 24 megawatts of electricity – enough to power every house in the Tableland region.

Goalies off to Spanish camp Two young Dimbulah goalkeepers will travel to Spain this week along with five other Australia wide goalkeepers and two coaches for an elite goalkeeping training camp at the Valencia FC Academy which will be overseen by National GK coach Miguel Angel Ispana.

Julius Srhoj, 13 and big brother Umberto, 15, are flying to Europe on Friday with their parents.

This fantastic opportunity came about through their Australian academy, Professional Goalkeeping Tuition run

by John Garside and their local FNQ goalkeeping coach, Brett Howard.

There have been many times when on-field players have been able to take part in an opportunity like this but this will be the first time Valencia FC Academy have invited goalkeepers only.

The opportunity will be priceless for the two Dimbulah Football Club players who will have the chance to show and refine their skills and to be seen by one of the giant Spanish clubs, Valencia FC.

The Stingrays senior men’s side were most impressive in defeating Blue Angels in last week’s round of Mareeba Basketball fixtures.

Following their narrow loss to Ciggy Butts during the previous round of fixtures, the Stingrays outfit produced an excellent team performance in their 59 to 51 win over Blue Angels.

After leading 16 to 9 at quarter time, Stingrays maintained their slight advantage for the remainder of the encounter to register a good 8 points victory

Gators coach heads to the Pride The Express Editor Carl Portella has a one-on-one with Gladiators coach Tye Ingebrigtsen

Carl: How has you time at the Gladiators been?

Tye: It’s been really good I have enjoyed my season here, we have put a lot of systems and programs into place through junior development and culture with the senior group and hopefully they will stay in place for the future.

Carl: With your departure are you leaving the club in a good place and condition?

Tye: The amount of ground work we have done this year with setting the junior academy and programs, I will definitely be leaving the club in a good strong position.

Carl: Have you achieved what you set out to do?

Tye: yeah definitely I am happy with what was accomplished with the club over the last 12 months, considering they only won 3 A-grade games last year, to where we have come in playing for a spot in the grand final, finishing second on the ladder, we didn’t lose a home game all year, they are achievements that I’m very proud of.

Carl: What does the future of the Gladiators hold after you departure?

Tye: Great future, the development of the juniors has been terrific and those juniors are the ones that will be playing A-grade in the future, everyone want

to see their juniors progress to A-grade footy, the pathways are now there for that to be achieved. It’s only a matter of time before you see more juniors playing for Mareeba which is great.

Carl: What will be your position at the Pride?

Tye: I have taken a dual role , I will be the assistant to head coach Ty Williams at the Pride and for the first eight weeks of the season I will be the head coach of the under eighteens for the Mel Meninga Cup , so I get to run my own show there for that period. I will then go back to working as assistant coach of the Pride.

I’m really stoked with the opportunity that I have been given by the Northern Pride.

Carl: Will your departure have an effect on the Gladiators as a club; will they be able to retain most of the current players?

Tye: They should be right, Mareeba have already received a number of resumes from some high profile coaches, and the club would like to stay in the same direction we have been going this year, which is great. I dare say that with more new players coming in and the core group of what we had this year they are going to be in a very good position come next season.

Carl: How would you like

to be remembered at the Gladiators?

Tye: I’ve done a lot of work with the juniors, obviously the seniors we’ve had some good success with them as well. We have made the connection between juniors and seniors stronger this year.

If you ask the presidents of the juniors and seniors they will tell you how strongly they have both merged together, the interaction we have had with the kids this year has been outstanding.

Carl: Professionally, what do you hope to achieve in your career?

Tye: Obviously to continue learning and developing as a coach and then eventually to be able to coach at the very highest level possible that I can reach. I just have to keep working as hard as I can and see where it takes me I guess.

Carl: What message do you have for all the Gladiators supporters?

Tye: Thank you for all the support they have given me and the squad this year, I and the players have really appreciated it. Working together with the juniors and keeping this role of junior development and coaching together is only going to be good for the future of the club. Thank you Mareeba.

Gators heroic effort After a narrow loss in Sunday’s qualifying grand final match, tributes to Tye Ingebrigtsen’s team continue to pour in on their Facebook page.

The Gladiators put in a heroic effort to come so close and yet so far with the team putting their heart, soul and bodies on the line.

But a classic quote from Tye said it all.

“That is the nature of this great game we play and compete in,” he said.

“Always a winner and always a loser.”

“We weren't good enough today going down 34-30.”

“To my men it’s been one hell of ride from November and I want to thank you for being a part of what we created.”

FNQ Football finals weekend ahead The Mareeba Bulls Second Division mens side, along with the clubs Under 13 and Under 14 boys will be flying the flag for the club at this weekends FNQ Football grand finals.

The Second Division men are the only senior side representing the club after progressing through to the grand final with an impressive 3-0 win

away to the Marlin Coast Rangers on Friday night.

Anthony Mete scored two goals and Josh Ruiz the third for the Bulls which see’s them head into the final against the Douglas Dragons this Friday night at 8.30pm at Endeavour Park, Cairns.

The clubs under 13’s and 14’s teams will then play on Saturday at Endeavour Park after pro-

gressing through via tough wins at the weekend.

The Under 13’s won 2-1 against Edge Hill, while the Under 14 boys fought back from 3-0 down to draw 4-4 and finally win on penalties.

On Saturday at Marlin Coast, the Bulls reserves bowed out of the finals going down 3-2 to the Stratford Dolphins, after

the 90 minutes finished 2-2. The match entered extra time, but this time the Bulls could not find a way to win.

Controversy once again marred the Dolphins winner, as the ball looked to have not crossed the line, but officials awarded the winning goal in the 116th minute.
