TRC to lobby Main Roads

Tablelands Regional Councillors are lobbying the Department of Transport and Main Roads in a desperate bid to get dangerous sections of the shire’s roads fixed up.

Division 3 councillor Anthony Ball said he was surprised there had not yet been a fatality on a stretch of Millaa Millaa road known as the Old Palmerston Hwy, due to trucks and caravans mistakenly believing the road was a suitable trajectory.

Cr Ball says the road is inadequately sign posted and that he had spent months trying to get the issue looked at by the appropriate authority.

“I’ve been going through the appropriate channels and I’ve raised this with local members etc and it seems to have fallen on deaf ears and I’d like to approach you Mr Mayor on behalf of the people of Millaa Millaa that we go and lobby Main Roads or the State Govt that we want some adequate funding for our state roads and we want some appropriate signage for Millaa Millaa to stop these trucks getting stuck and these accidents happening,” he said. “I’m sick and tired of the conditions of state govt roads.

We have state roads, we have a contract in place where we look after them but we seem to be getting left out and I think it’s high time we go and ;lobby the state government and in particular the minister for main roads.”

Cr Ball said he was sick of Tablelands Regional Council continually being blamed for the state of the roads. He put forward a motion to lobby the Minister and Director General of Main Roads during Business Without Notice at last Thursday’s monthly meeting.

Wetlands closed for overhaul of business

In a bold and exciting move that will see it entering a new era, Mareeba Wetlands has closed to visitors for the foreseeable future as the Board of Directors breathe new life into the conservation reserve.

Jabiru Safari Lodge and Visitor Centre will not reopen in its current form to the public, instead becoming part of a bigger plan that includes increased community involvement.

The reserve itself is still being managed, with rangers living on site all year.

Fiachra Kearney joined the board in October last year and is passionate about taking the reserve in a new, more philanthropic direction.

“The reserve was set up to be a conservation enterprise with direct linkages into the community. So we want to try and refresh that,” he said. “The problem is that with the lodge there’s so much time and effort now that’s needed to keep it up to the level that’s required, there’s no time to do anything else.”

“The wider world has changed too, offering more diverse opportunities for us to consider. Moreover, we must ensure our conservation and community focus remain relevant.”

The Wildlife Conservancy of Tropical Queensland manages the Mareeba Wetlands, funded largely through innovative, low impact eco-tourism, small grants and member-

ships. The conservancy also run several other regional programs, including the annual ‘Crane Week’ on the Atherton Tablelands.

Along with weddings and arts events, Mr Kearney envisages the future of the wetlands to include opportunities for disadvantaged members of our community.

“There’s a lot of research on the interaction between bush land, wilderness space and human wellbeing and unfortunately the

people who often need that most are the ones who have least access to it. So we’d like to see if we can change that dynamic a bit.

From a conservation perspective we have to engage the younger generation, and create broader awareness that land has many values, not simply the dollar.”

CEO gone from TRC earlier than planned Despite a statement claiming CEO Hurriyet Babacan would be staying on in her role at Tablelands Regional Council until June 1, she has already left the position.

No reason has been given as to why the CEO left her job over a month earlier than expected.

she had “provided excellent and visionary leadership and under her direction we achieved many great outcomes in a short period of time.”

The motion was widely welcomed by the other councillors, also concerned about pot holes, particularly in Tolga after the wet season.

“I completely endorse what councillor ball has been saying and I think it’s long overdue,” said Deputy Mayor Katrina Spies.

“We’ve waited over two years. We’ve gone down all the official tracks and I think we need to put a time line on it and if something

isn’t done pretty quickly, I think we cannot delay any longer in making some representation.”

Councillor Owen Byrnes suggested involving the local transport industry to increase the pressure.

“We need to go back and let them know that our roads were built with minimal suspension in mind and now we’re running 65 tonne air bag suspensions,” he said.

“If we can get industry to work with us, it could really help.”

John Reynolds lives just off the Old Palmerston Highway and recalls how not long ago a truck got stuck travelling up the road and had to be removed with a crane.

He says some properties along the stretch of road have to put up with them turning around in their driveways, but the biggest concern, he said, is the safety of other cars on the road.

“The road is not just impossible for those Bdouble configurations to navigate, when they get onto that road there are serious safety issues not just involving them but anyone else travelling on the road,” he said.

“There is a sign that

says it’s not suitable for caravans and its not. But one accident on the road is too many. It’s miraculous we haven’t had an accident yet.”

Mr Reynolds says the term ‘highway’ suggests to road users that the road is big enough for the big rigs, when in fact the opposite is true.

“When Main Roads puts up signs saying Palmerston Hwy and indicating that is the way to Ravenshoe, it’s not surprising that some of the truck drivers get confused,” said Mr Reynolds who reckons the signs have been there for a few years.

“It has to be rectified.”

Mr Reynolds is one of many locals concerned about their safety on the road navigating the big

trucks and of the nuisance issue when so many of them are forced to try and turn around halfway down the road.

There have also been issues with the quality of the road as huge pot holes formed after the recent rains.

“There has been very little response to the council’s concerns about this issue and the community here really need to get the message out there to the state authority that something needs to be done,” said Mr Reynolds.

“There is quite a community who depend on this road and in that community there’s a high percentage of older people so the potential for an accident is increased as a result.”

The extent of Tablelands Regional Council shire’s struggling water infrastructure has come to light after councillors voted to look closer at the system to the tune of around $1million.

Water and Waste manager Jon Turner said he was concerned there was no current documentation that outlines the water infrastructure across the region and that if the shire wanted to be proactive about future growth then a strategy needed to be created.

“An organisation that has been in existence for a considerable amount of time should have strate-

gies or planning documents somewhere in existence,” he said at last week’s monthly council meeting.

“But we are probably suffering from a lack of decision making about something that should have been done 10 or 20 years ago in terms of having some sort of plan about how we develop our water over a number of years and respond to growth in the community.”

Two grant applications have been submitted to cover the cost of creating the strategy, money that will come out of council’s back pocket if they are not approved.

New councillor Owen Byrnes took the opportuni-

ty at his first council meeting to argue that the money could be better spent fixing up existing issues in the shire and voted against approving the strategy.

“I’m concerned that if this funding is not approved then this is going to come out of the operational budget and that’s a heck of a lot of money we could put into actually creating something instead of creating another lot of strategy paperwork,” he said.

“We’re having to reinvent the wheel somewhere to find more documentation to find something that we already know is there.

“I’m more into putting budget money into creating outcomes.”

Councillor Kate Eden supported the proposal saying she felt it would be a crucial step in solving the water quality issues in her division.

“This is painful for me because you would have seen the boil water signs out at Carrington and Wongabel. The water diagram for Atherton including Carrington looks like a plate of spaghetti. It’s all over the place. It’s been built ad hoc,” she said.

“With apologies to my constituents out there short term I think it’s my duty to support an overall strategy that’s going to look at the big picture so that when we do invest a large amount of money into this, it is the

best possible investment.”

Chief Operating Officer Bob Owen said the benefits of investing in the strategy now would be wide spread.

“I think it’s really important to realise that if council doesn’t commit to a strategy we’re going to continue dealing with our water supply on an ad hoc basis and what you’ll be doing is hand balling the problem to a future council,” he said. “Whatever is going to be decided, needed to be decided with the future in mind.”

After much debate, the councillors endorsed the development of a Water Infrastructure Strategy with all councillors in favour except for Cr Byrnes.

Raising awareness of domestic violence

In the month of May, Tablelands Regional Council is supporting Tablelands Sexual Assault Service (TSAS) to deliver the #Yes2Respect and Paint the Town Purple Campaign.

“Far North Queensland has the highest level of reported domestic and family violence (DFV) in our state, with one in six females and one in 19 males experiencing violence from someone known to them,”

said Mayor Paronella.

“Just as horrifying is that one in four young people live with DFV, and we are losing at least one woman a week in Australia.”

DFV is the highest cause of homelessness for women and children, and Indigenous women and girls are 35 times more likely to be hospitalised because of family violence.

Senator in town for farming forum

Senator Matt Canavan, Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, used his visit to Mareeba last week to assure local farmers he would be standing beside them in their fight to stop tree clearing laws from passing through parliament.

He was in town for the inaugural Efficient Farming Forum - a day for local farmers to get together and hear about what’s new and innovative in the wider agrisultural community.

Mr Canavan’s spoke passionately in defense of farmers and attached the Labor government for the proposed Vegetation Law. “We fought a war for the rights to be able to develop a block of land and develop

it the way they saw fit,” he said.

“We fought a war to protect rights like innocent before proven guilty before the courts of law and we respected those rights. And now 50 years on we’ve got laws in the Queensland parliament that want to make it illegal to farm. They want to make it illegal to develop land to grow your food.”

His words struck a chord with much of the audience who are nervously waiting to see if their future in agriculture and horticulture will be hindered by the proposed Vegetation law that will make it illegal to clear land of trees for farming purposes.

“They’re not providing you with an ounce, a cent of compensation for stripping those rights from you,” said Mr Canavan.

“It’s an insult to the memory of those that have fought for this country for the freedoms that we should cherish and respect.

You should not be able to take property off people without giving them compensation. “ It was Mr Canavan’s first time back on the Tablelands in over a year.

He said he was looking to get legal advice about the tree laws suggesting that what the government was doing was illegal.

“It could breach federal govt laws or constitutional provisions,” he said.

“I am seeking to get some legal advice about that. I spoke to the attorney general Christian Porter about that yesterday but I can’t make any promises.”

The event was the first of its kind for the area, fa-

cilitated by Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) as a suggestion by Northern Gulf – a major sponsor.

“The idea was to provide a forum where we could help people look into the future, not just to talk about trends but to talk about some of the issues that are arising now in the farming

community and not specifically in the horticulture, it’s across the board,” said MDFVGA president Joe Moro.

“The Tablelands is one of the leading innovation areas in Australia and this is just part of continuing that process of people continuing to know what the trends are, know what the issues are.”

Mt Molloy Anzac day ceremony The Mt Molloy RSL Sub Branch welcomed increased attendance at both the Dawn Ceremony and 11am Parade and Ceremony.

The Guest Speaker at both Ceremonies was Barry Vains OAM, RSL District President, Pioneer Fitzroy Highlands.

Barry was born and raised in Mt Molloy and is the Grandson of WW1 Veteran Charles Oliver Vains who was in the 11th Regiment 4th Light Horse Brigade and served in Egypt and Palestine.

Quite a few of the men from Mt Molloy who enlisted in WW1 enlisted in the Light Horse Regiment.

As a tribute to those Veterans Cary Daly on her horse… rode through the mist to stand beside the Cenotaph as the sun rose during a moving Dawn Ceremony and later led the Parade at the 11am Ceremony.

Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen represented the Mareeba Shire Council and read the names of the Fallen as students from Julatten and Mt Molloy State Schools laid a Poppy at the Cenotaph for each of these soldiers.

School Captains from both Julatten and Mt Molloy State Schools read the Resolution and later laid Wreaths.

Wreaths were also laid by students from Mareeba High School, St Stephens High School Mareeba, Mossman High School and Biboohra State School.

The Tableland International Singers led by Hymns and New Zealand and Australian Anthems.

They later performed to the crowd who attended the Mt Molloy State School for lunch and Anzac Day activities including Kids games of Tug o War, 3-legged races and Sack races.

Services held across the region Hundreds of Tablelanders took to the streets in towns across the region last Wednesday to commemorate Australia’s serving men and women, past and present.

The annual commemoration is a national day of remembrance with dawn services, wreath laying and marches and this year

was made more special as it was the 100th anniversary of the ending of the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in France. Australian troops were instrumental in taking the town from the Germans, halting the German 100 day advance saving Amiens, and forever changed the course of the war in the allies favour.

But on Wednesday servicemen and women from conflicts across the world were honoured and veterans piled onto the streets to march through their towns to the applause of onlookers.

Local dignitaries left wreaths and offered words of meaning to highlight the importance of the occasion.

Mareeba Lions and Lioness cooked up a storm of ANZAC biscuits to make sure everyone could enjoy a traditional ANZAC biscuit at the parade last Wednesday. As has been the practice over some years the Clubs also presented the High Schools with a book relevant to local history instead of the traditional floral wreath.

More effort has been put in to cleaning up Bunny Seary lookout with new stools being installed for the comfort of those who want to take time out at what is a great vantage point overlooking the town and air strip.

Since the first Club in Australia was formed 70 years ago, Lions has grown dramatically in size and impact with over 1300 clubs and 30,000 members giving back through an array of community-based programmes and initiatives.

From helping cure childhood cancer and Alzheimers disease, supporting people with hearing, vision and mobility problems, providing disaster relief and making positive change in local communities Lions are on a mission to make the world a better place. $1.5m hospital accommodation

Construction has begun on a $1.5million staff accommodation building at Mareeba Hospital, a move that Member for Cook Cynthia Lui says cements the future of the facility.

The Labor state member attended a turning of the sod ceremony last Tuesday on the hospital grounds, bringing to fruition one of her election promises.

Each of the dwelling is a three-bedroom house, with the ability to lock each bedroom and ensuite, ensuring the houses are suitable for both families and single staff.

Ms Lui used the opportunity to drive home the message about how secure the future of the hospital is.

“The government continues to invest in Mareeba hospital and this is something that I support and will always work with key stakeholders in this community,” she said.

“Since 2015 funding to Mareeba hospital has increased by 14 per cent and staffing has increased by 10 per cent to 186 full time staff.”

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Board Chairman, Clive Skarott was also part of the proceedings and took part in a ‘community engagement session’ with members of the Save the Mareeba Hospital Services group (SMHSG).

“Part of our plan for health services in rural areas, is to identify where it is feasible to deliver more services at a hospitals,

whether through telehealth or face to face, so we can cut down the distances people have to travel to access services,” he said.

“In a town like Mareeba, the hospital and its staff are part of the community. And the community is part of the hospital. The availability of good quality accom-

modation will help ensure we can continue to find and keep permanent staff in this vibrant community.”

Members of SMHSG said they have been promised a detailed response to the points laid out in their petition that was tabled before government earlier this year.

The equivalent of four full-time construction jobs will be supported during construction of the staff accommodation which is expected to be complete in July.

The existing staff quarters will remain in place, with the new housing adding capacity.

Priors Creek plan delayed by petition

A petition that amassed almost 3,500 signatures in response to Atherton’s Priors Creek master plan was finally tabled in council last week.

Deputy Mayor Katrina Spies said it was “unacceptable” that the petition had taken two months to be formally put before council, delaying decision-making over the precinct.

“I’d like some commitment that as a matter of urgency we make the time with the councillors and the officers to sit down with the principle petitioners,” she said at Tablelands Regional Council’s monthly meeting on April 26.

“This is now delaying

us making informed decisions in line with our budget for the upcoming year so this is very significant.

“We have 3,475 signatories, over 80 per cent of those were locals, they’re our constituents, that I represent and who I am here to serve and the fact that we haven’t replied for two months I don’t think is good enough.”

The petition was instigated by Atherton Lions Club and argued that two parts of the plan should be amended – namely the sale of lots within the precinct for residential and commercial development and the inclusion of a multi-use road.

Public consultation on the plan closed on March 3 2017 and was subsequently

modified in response to the feedback. The revised plan was put before council last week for endorsement but was put on the back burner while the Lions Club petition is discussed.

“Our constituents have shown a strong concern for something we’re about to vote on and I think it’s only fair for us to hear from the delegation to hear their concerns to then be able to make an informed decision,” said Cr Spies.

“But the urgency now is that the budget discussions are taking effect and we need to sit down with them and have a talk. You can call it a workshop, you can call it whatever you like, but it’s just actually a meeting with us and the representatives to discuss this.”

Cr Spies said she wanted further understanding of some of the points in the petition and said the onus was on everyone to make that a priority. Cr Paronella echoed her concerns.

“It should have come to an earlier meeting,” he said. “I spoke to the president of the Lions Club, I said I was progressing and he was happy with that but yes we dragged the chain, it should have gone to an earlier meeting.”

A meeting will now be organised between the petition’s representatives before a draft report is brought back to the councillors to discuss in a closed workshop. A formal decision on the plan will then be made at a subsequent public council meeting.

Were you born in Kuranda and do you still live there/ visit? What are your experiences of the Tablelands?

I was born in Cairns but have lived at the Northern beaches and in Kuranda until I moved away. I've always been a bit of a bush kid, literally most of my childhood was in a tree or bumming around a creek somewhere.

How did you feel finding out you’d been nominated for a Queensland Music Award?

I was surprised and also really stoked. XO Girl is part of my first ever project so it gets me excited to share it with the

world soon.

Tell us a bit about your music and what inspires it?

I draw a lot of influences from Rhythm and Blues and Soul. Give me some bluesy chords and an urban beat and I'll never leave the room. But I like to play with a lot of different styles and mix things up.

I've grown up listening to a heap of different stuff too. My older sisters would always play someone like Lauryn Hill for example (who I have mad love for), while my mum would have Moby or Phantom of The Opera

on repeat, so as you can imagine it was pretty versatile.

What inspires it? Everything – life experiences, things that mean a lot to me, things that make me laugh and make me cry, sometimes it's just things I see randomly that have happened to others.

How did you get into performing/songwriting and what are your biggest influences?

I've always loved writing and creating. I started taking it seriously fairly recently. I feel like it was my year in New York a couple years back that really kicked things into

motion for me.

What are your aspirations for your career?

Just being able to do what I love and share it with others means so much to me (and hopefully people like it!). Australia has an incredible arts community so I'm grateful to be part of it and learning from some really amazing people.

Have you found it hard as a musician from the Far North to break into the music scene competing with others living in bigger cities?

People in the industry are really friendly and

seem to support people coming up from regional areas. I don't think it really matters.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Tough question. I'm gonna have to say my year in New York. It was so much fun. I did the craziest shit of my life and grew so much as an artist and on a personal level.

Atherton represented at national BMX event

Six BMX bikers from Atherton recently went to WA for the National Titles including Asha Smith, Jacy Rose Evans, Aiden Smith, Harry Phillips, Bailey Page and Boston Page.

SIX riders from the Atherton BMX club represented the region at the BMX National Titles held in Bunbury, WA, over six days from March 20 to 25 this year. There were over 1000 riders from all over the country competing for an Australian Plate.

On day two of the National Titles, the Oceania Continental Champion-

ships were held for a day of competitive racing, getting to know the track and the riders you will be riding with for that exclusive Australian Plate. Four riders from Atherton competed in the event including – Asha Smith, 10yr Girls, 4 Oceania Plate, Jacy Rose Evans, 13yr Girls, 5 Oceania Plate, Aiden Smith, 13yr Boys, 7 Oceania Plate and Harry

Phillips, Junior Men, raced through to semi-finals.

On day three of the National Titles, two of the Atherton riders hit the track to compete for an Australian Plate in the Cruiser Class.

Jacy Rose Evans competed in the 13-14 year girls and with an unfortunate crash in her first moto was unable to progress through

to the finals. Asha Smith represented the 8-10 year girls on her cruiser and was able to hold out the rest of her competition and achieve 1A. On day four of the National Titles, the 20” class was held where four of the local riders competed for an A Plate. Boston Page (12 year boys) rode hard but was unable to progress past

the three motos.

Bailey Page (9 year boys) made it through to quarter finals, but a crash saw his day finish earlier then he would of liked. Jacy Rose Evans made it to the semi finals, but had a tangle with another rider which she unfortunately could not make up to time to make it through to the finals.

Aiden Smith rode in the

13 year boys age group. After progressing comfortably through the motos, quarters and semi-finals Aiden rode in the final to obtain himself a 7A plate. Asha Smith after gaining herself a 1A plate in her Cruiser Class was also able to come away with a second Australian plate in her 20” class and achieve an 4A plate.

tional Titles, Harry Phillips competed in the Junior Men Class and made it through to the Semi-finals with some very fast and competitive riding.

Harry also competed in BMXA National Series, Round 2, at Frankston, Victoria over the weekend and just missed out a place in the final.

Impressive win for Bulls

The Mareeba Bulls have come away with their first points of the 2018 FNQ Football campaign with an impressive 3-1 over the Leichhardt Lions at Lindsay Australia Stadium, Mareeba.

The Bulls returned to their home ground for the first time in 2018 and looked right at home in front of their home crowd.

After weathering an

open barrage from the Lions, the home side settled and looked in control, and youngster Jaydon Wells opening the scoring, finishing off a sweeping move with the assist coming from younger brother Bryson to give the Bulls a 1-0 at the break.

It could have been more with Robert Pendenza missing from the penalty spot midway through the

first half.

The second half started where the first finished with Jaydon Wells getting his second for the night in the opening minutes to give the home side a 2-0 lead.

From then on the match swung back and forth, before another youngster Leon Peressini finished off well to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. The Lions did get one back late in the match, but

the Bulls finished up the match 3-1 victors and bring home the first points of the season.

Coaching staff Marcello Savaglio and Angel Tatti made a couple of changes, bringing in central defender Nicholas Tallarico, moving Peressini out wide and move Darcy McKormack into a central role.

The Bulls looked more comfortable with Tallarico

leading from the back and McKormack leading from the front, the coaching staff now have a some good decisions to make with Justin Sabbidin, Steven Cater and possibly Jason Haydon being available for selection for the Bulls’ next game on Sunday May 13.

On Saturday night, the Bulls reserves went down 3-0, the premier ladies started well going ahead

1-0 in the opening five minutes with Jeannae Kalinau scoring a screamer to open the scoring, but against a strong Lions outfit the ladies showed, promise, but went down fighting 3-1.

The clubs Under-18’s boys continued their unbeaten run with another impressive win, charging down the lions 3-0 to sit atop of the FNQ youth league, along with the Bulls

1st division mens who are now also three from three, grinding out a tough 2-0 win away to the Lions on Friday night.

The Bulls 2nd division side also remains undefeated with a late 2-1 win at home on Friday night against the Southside Comets.

All grades now have a break this weekend for the May Day long weekend.

Roosters winning form continues A double from noted try scorer Caleb Foster has helped the Atherton Roosters to a comfortable 28-16 win over in-form and previously unbeaten Kangaroos on Sunday at Vico Oval.

The round 4 match up was the Roosters fourth straight away game and the victory gives them a three from four winning record on the road. Kangaroos got off to a dream start with tries at the 15th and 25th minutes to lead 10-0.

However, Atherton hit back through young winger Matty Baillie going over followed by Caleb Foster with his first. This put the Roosters 12-10 in front for halftime. It was a flurry of points to open the second half from the Roosters, with two tries coming within a 6-minute period.

Bull ride to raise funds for charity The toughest bucking bulls and Bull riders will go head to head on Saturday June 16 as the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds comes alive with “Round 2 of the 2018 Great Northern Bull Riding Series”.

Mareeba Rodeo Association has partnered with North Queensland Rodeo Entertainment to bring Round 2 of the Great Northern Bull ride Series to Mareeba and is proudly presented by Ringers Western.

But the event will be more than just bull riding, it will be a night to shine the light on bullying and youth prevention suicide. Highlighted as the “Bullying and Youth Suicide Prevention Round” proceeds from the night will go to worthy organisations like Headspace and Dolly’s Dream as we fight to stamp out bullying in our communities.

In honour of Dr Bestmann Dr Nathan Walmsley is running in the Great Wheelbarrow Race this month in honour of the late Dr Bestmann.

Doctor Nathan Walmsley is preparing to push his body to the limit in honour of the legacy of his mentor and mate the late Dr Mark Bestmann.

A well-known and respected general practitioner from Mareeba, Dr Bestmann had been a public champion of mental health issues in North Queensland all the while fighting his own private battle against depression. Dr Bestmann died in 2016 aged 55.

To honour his friend,

Dr Walmsley will this year compete in the solo category of the Great Wheelbarrow Race raising money for mental health causes close to Dr Bestmann’s heart, The Black Dog Institute.

“Mark would often run in a team in the Wheelbarrow Race and he would always raise a huge chunk of money and dress up in the most outrageous get-ups,” he said.

“He believed the more open people were talking about mental health the

more likely were for people to seek help.

“His contribution to reducing the stigma associated with mental health in North Queensland was something truly special and a vitally important legacy to honour.”

Dr Walmsley will honour that legacy by pushing a wheelbarrow 140-kilometres from Chillagoe to Mareeba as part of the annual Great Wheelbarrow Race.

The annual three-day event is in its 15th year and

attracts about 500 competitors from across Australia and this year will be held from 18 May to 20 May. Typically, teams share the load but for a handful of hardy souls they take the challenge of doing the entire journey by themselves.

“I’ve done the race before a couple of times but doing it solo is going to be brutal,” Dr Walmsley laughed. “I’m hoping the broader health community will get behind me with either some sponsorship or

helping to be a member of my support crew or even forming a team.”

Dr Walmsley said he first met Mark at an education session about mental health for young general practitioners about to start in the workforce.

“He told us that life is like a bar stool. The more legs it has the sturdier it is,” he said.

“If a bar stool only has one leg and it breaks there is nothing to stop you from falling.”

Nathan began travelling as part of his GP training spending time in Atherton and Cooktown before returning to Mareeba to work with Dr Bestmann at the Mareeba Medical Centre.

Over the next six years they became fast friends.

“Mark was impossible not to like. He would always have time for you and he had the kind of personality that would light up a room,” he said.

“As I got to know him I became aware of his battle with depression.

“It was remarkable how much time he gave raising money for mental health and raising awareness of mental health given his own struggles.”
