Rylee’s big ideas win major award

With boundless energy and drive, and a successful business to boot, it was no surprise that Rylee Venables was recently named as the 2018 Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Cairns Business Women’s Club.

The 29-year-old grew up in Ravenshoe and now lives in Mareeba, but the business that has put her name in lights is based in Atherton – not that you could easily find it.

Tucked behind Supercheap Auto at the end of a car park is a little gem of a place called Petals and Pinecones. Opened on a shoe string three years ago it has tripled its earning capacity every year since then, thanks so some radical thinking from Rylee herself.

“Our entire focus rather than worrying about the

business is completely on the customer,” she said.

“Not customer service but customer experience.

Like how do you feel when you walk in? what memories are you creating? do you feel like you’re acknowledged when you walk in? I don’t want my customers to come in and feel like they’re a transaction.”

It’s this non-traditional approach to business that saw her win the award and has seen her cafe do so well. Now she is focusing on launching a range of organic teas – Juju – into seven different countries internationally.

“I was looking for something that would compliment our primary business that wasn’t so left of field,” she said. “I wanted it to still fit with our profile. I drink a lot of tea and I thought it would be really cool to sell our own range in store, so that’s where the

idea started.

“But once we launched we got really good feedback so we thought we’d make it available online and that’s done really well so we thought we’d look into export.”

It’s just another element to this young mum’s busy life, which also includes one half of branding company Wolf and Geek.

“Personally I’d like to continue growing the profile for the region – that’s my biggest goal,” she said.

“I want to be a voice for young business people in the area because I think we’ve got a real stigma around that. It’s not just all old people doing business.

I think if we can showcase that there are young people doing some exceptional things, which there are up here, then raising the profile of our area.

“One business up here succeeds and then an entire community succeeds.”

Rylee Venables was recently named the 2018 Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Cairns Business Women’s Club.

Kaban wind farm approval angers nearby residents

Neighbouring residents of a proposed wind farm near Ravenshoe were “gobsmacked” to find out last week that the project was given the green light by the Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning.

Around 29 wind turbines reaching a staggering 240m high are now likely to be built in the Kaban

area of Ravenhsoe angering around 20 residents living in close proximity.

Cameron Dick announced that the State had provided development approval for the wind farm project, saying that it would bring substantial investment to the region and is expected to create around 150 jobs during construction.

“The green power hub, which will incorporate the wind farm, is a $300 million project, planned to

operate for at least 30 years and generate enough power to supply 57,000 homes,” he said. “The Queensland Government welcomes private sector investment of this kind in support of the state’s renewable energy policy.”

But one local home owner whose property sits on the State Forest boundary just 1.8m from the proposed site said she is concerned about the health implications of the turbines.

Helen Kirk said that she uses water sourced naturally and was fearful that it may become contaminated during the inevitable blasting that would occur during the construction phase.

“I am so disappointed with everything,” she said.

“I keep getting pushed from pillar to post and nobody wants to take accountability. Am I going to spend the next 30-50 years trying to find what went wrong?

keep fighting this.”

Minister for Energy Anthony Lynham said the new wind farm would complement more than two dozen large-scale projects that were currently committed or under construction throughout Queensland, including the recently announced $200 million Lakeland wind farm, also in the Far North.

“When complete, these projects will more than double Queensland’s renewable energy output and

produce enough electricity to power close to one million homes,” Dr Lynham said “Our 50 per cent renewable energy generation target by 2030 has boosted the level of renewable energy investment, bringing significant projects to regions right across the state.

“This is yet another project to join our $4.3 billion pipeline of renewable energy projects underway or financially committed,” he said.

140km in memory of Deb

The last time Donna Chambers ran the Great Wheelbarrow Race it was in 2012 as part of a duo with good friend Deb Ricci.

This year she ran the 140kms alone, in memory of her former running partner who tragically lost her life in a car accident a year ago.

It was a fitting way to remember the lady who touched so many lives and lit up every room with her “infectious smile”.

“It was my way of giving her a tribute,” said Donna.

“We shared a strong bond after doing the duo.

It’s something you remember your whole life. You both work hard and always share a common bond.”

Deb was driving home to Dimbulah last year when she was involved in a head on collision. She died three days later in hospital from her injuries. It was her 55th birthday and Mother’s Day.

She left behind three children, Craig, Brenton and Shahnee – as well as a legacy that will never be forgotten.

“She giggled all the time,” said Deb’s mum Colleen Dunigan.

“She had a real infectious laugh and smile.

There was always a flower in her hair when she went to school.”

Deb was a prep teacher at Mareeba State School and was well-known for her ability to get difficult children to calm down and cooperate.

“She had a knack for it,” said Colleen.

On top of being a dedicated mum, a popular and much-loved friend and a keen fitness enthusiast, Deb was part of the air cadets for 10 years. She touched the lives of many and her death rocked the Dimbulah community.

Donna decided that running the Wheelbarrow Race this year, alone, was a good opportunity to remember her friend.

“She had the biggest

and most warming heart and a great smile to light up the room,” said Donna.

“She lived life to the max.”

But 140kms alone is no mean feat – especially when every step brings back memories.

“It was hard,” said Donna.

“It was all a mind game.

There were some ups and downs – mentally. You remember a particular spot on the road.

“But the last day was the hardest. Going past the accident site. We pulled over and parked the wheelbarrow next to the site.”

Donna was not racing to raise money.

“It was something personal,” she said. “It was a personal tribute.”

She took around 20 hours to cross the finish line and on her way past Deb’s parents’ place close to Mareeba, she called in for a hug and a cry.

Colleen and Brian Dunigan had no idea she was doing the race in their daughter’s honour and

were deeply touched.

“We want to thank her for doing it,” they said.

“We feel sure Deb ran every mile with Donna and she could not have paid Deb a greater tribute.

“We feel ‘thank you’ is not enough but however ‘thanks Donna’.

“Our thanks to all who supported Donna on the run.”

Donna says she will always remember Deb as a bright spark who was up for anything – including a mad three day run with a wheelbarrow.

“That was Deb’s nature.

She was always willing to give anything a go,” she said.

Colleen and Brian say that one year on they have started to come to terms with Deb’s death.

Next month they will meet some of the people that were donated Deb’s organs after she passed away. At least three or four people have gone on living thanks to Deb, in an act of kindness she would no doubt have instigated.

Couple charged with murder The small town of Mt Garnet is this week still in shock after the murder of one man and the serious injury of his brother.

Mark Miller, 36, was stabbed to death on the night of May 23 and managed to get to the town’s ambulance station before dying from his injuries. His brother Rob Miller, 33, is in a serious but stable condition in Cairns Base Hospital.

TRC trials new Ravenshoe plan TABLELANDS Regional Council has identified, planned and trialled an innovative option for the development of the Ravenshoe Town Centre Master Plan.

In a statement made after their monthly meeting last week, a council spokesperson said the move was ‘in line with their commitment in the Corporate Plan 2017–20 to explore options and develop sound strategies and practices to maximise economic, social and environmental wellbeing for the community’.

At the meeting councillors endorsed the engagement of JCU’s Tropical Urban Design Lab (TUDLab) and its direct partners for the development of the plan.

“The engagement will ensure a mutual and beneficial relationship, a fresh approach and perspective, better engagement with the community, guidance and input from JCU’s lecturers and partners, and overall management by a research and education institution on the leading edge of planning and urban design,” the statement read.

TRC revenue on track say officers

After ten months, total operating revenue at Tablelands Regional Council is tracking on budget, however projected to be $476,000 under budget by the end of the year.

The main contributing factor is the early payment of the first 2017/18 Financial Assistance Grant shown as revenue in the previous year.

Operating expenditure is tracking 5 per cent below budget to the end of April, which is attributed to timing issues with the current end of year projects forecasting operating expenses to be under budget by $797,000 or 1.4%.

Council received and noted the quarterly financial report for the period ending 30 April 2018.

WOYAYA! to sing at the Mareeba Wetlands The Wildlife Conservancy of Tropical Queensland (WCTQ) is excited to announce the first in their annual donation only events where they invite the community to experience the Reserve.

All of their arts events are designed to reflect the connections between the arts and wild landscapes.

On Sunday June 10 the Conservancy is presenting WOYAYA! at Clancy’s Lagoon on the Mareeba Wetlands in a sunset performance, showcasing songs from their extensive repertoire.

The group is well known in the Cairns and Tablelands music scene for their

vibrant performances, having sung at the Yungaburra Folk Festival, COCA and a wide range of other venues.

An ensemble group from Mareeba will also be performing prior to WOYOYA! WOYAYA! is a 20 person strong Acappella choir directed by Jane Younghusband. The choir present a wide range of beautiful songs from around the world, including Africa, Macedonia, Scotland, Finland, and Japan, alongside Gospel and contemporary songs from closer to home.

WCTQ Board member Dr. Merrilee Frankish said that the Wetlands are a perfect fit for the acappella

group.

“We started with the idea of a group performing as the sun sets over the lagoon at the Wetlands and WOYAYA! are just perfect for the setting,” said Dr Frankinsh.

“We’re really thrilled to be hosting such an accomplished singing group.

People can bring their own chairs and sit back and relax at the end of the day to some beautiful music.

“This first performance is a bit of a test run as part of an entirely new direction being developed for the WCTQ so watch this space.”

Priors Creek master plan goes ahead

A revised version of the Priors Creek Master Plan which includes the recommended sale of six lots of land, was approved by Tablelands Regional Councillors last week, despite staunch opposition from the Atherton Lions Club.

A petition was lodged with council in February signed by 3,495 people requesting changes to the plan. A letter included with the petition specified that along with suggesting the inclusion of botanical gardens and a park with picnic and playground facilities, that they did not want the sale of several allotments of council freehold land within the Priors Creek precinct saying it was “unethical”.

But councillors voted to go ahead with the sale as outlined in a revised version of the Master Plan last week stating that the profit from the sales would be used to fund “capital works needed to deliver the Master Plan”. It was specified in the council report that the lots would only be sold with “a defined list of preferred uses” in the form of building covenants.

Further to that, the officers report stated that the petition suggested to the public “some exaggerated or unlikely consequences” of the Priors Creek Master Plan, including that the sale of the lots “would severely restrict access, limit open space for parking and recreation, and will seriously detract from the park’s visual amenity”.

The council report disagreed with the claims and said that the Master Plan “allows for good access, adequate parking, quality open space and recreation opportunities and for a general improvement in visual amenity”.

The report also stated that the inclusion of a multi-use road was “essential” and that the response from their community consultation process showed that the use of the area as a multi-use recreational and destination place was preferred.

Tudor Tanase, Manager Planning and Regulatory Services, offered councillors three options at their monthly meeting on Thursday which included discarding the Atherton Lions Club proposal (Option 1), investigate and adopt specific elements from the proposal (Option 2) and

initiate a full review of the plan, including community consultation (Option 3).

Deputy Mayor Katrina Spies praised Atherton Lions Club for their involvement in the plan and offered an alternative motion which adopted Option 2 and suggested that the council work together with community groups and stakeholders “to further refine specific elements as council and/or external funding is committed and the project progresses”.

Councillor Kate Eden said there were many community members who disagreed with the Lions Club proposal and that they needed to be taken into account.

“I think the current design has good ideas and should be retained and I’m pretty happy with the master plan that’s been modified as per the community consultation,” she said.

Design of TRC’s new centre released Tablelands Regional Council has released the artist’s impression for the Community Education, Training and Disaster Coordination Centre to be built on Vernon Street.

“Once built, the facility will provide a space for community groups and government agencies to conduct natural disaster resilience and preparation training, and will be the base of operations for the Local Disaster Management Group,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“It is extremely important to us that we have a

centre where we can effectively coordinate a disaster response in our region.

“Our effectiveness will be further enhanced by being located adjacent to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and SES.” Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe saidL “The Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program is hugely popular with regional Councils and is delivering terrific results for jobs and regional economies throughout regional Queensland.

“This includes in the Tablelands, as this terrific

Work on the new facility will start early in the new financial year and should be completed by June 2019.

Cattle industry under threat

Cape York cattle farmer Graham Elmes says that unless recently passed Vegetation Laws are turned around, there will be no pastoral industry left in the Far North, and he should know. Graham’s parents Ivy and Sid Elmes were the founding shareholders of the Mareeba saleyards and his property, Butchers Hill cattle station, was the original station in Cape York.

Mr Elmes is devastated that the tree clearing laws have been passed and donated a bullock for auction at the recent yards’ 70th anniversary sale to put funds towards Ag Force’s ‘Fair Laws for Farmers’ campaign.

“We have been left behind as far as development is concerned,” he said.

“Cape York has been left behind because we haven’t had the infrastructure in place to assist our industry to move forward. Now we’re getting a bitumen road through to Weipa, our infrastructure is getting put in place and all of a sudden

they’re saying ‘we don’t want you to develop any further’. Our industry has been nipped in the bud.”

Mr Elmes has been a cattle farmer his whole life. His career began at 10 years old when he was paid ‘five bob’ a week.

He was droving cattle to the sale yards 65 years ago and says he has seen the decline of the cattle industry in the region thanks to bad politics.

“We used to have 150,000/160,000 head of cattle in Cape York,” he said.

“Now we’re down to about 30,000. That’s what’s happened - bad policies that we’ve been dealing with for the last 30 years has created that.

“It really hurts me to think of what we were and what we are today.”

Mr Elmes is convinced that if the laws are not overturned, the whole cattle industry in Cape York will be ‘decimated’.

“It will send things backward, How can it move forward? You can’t develop your property. If you’re going to be tied to

the one number that you’re running now, how can you move forward? How can our business here keep operating?” he said.

“We’ve got this infrastructure put in place now moving forward, but our bloody bad policies are undermining our industry. It’s just politics.”

Mr Elmes said he and other pastoralists in the region are just asking for “a fair balance”.

“If we don’t get the laws changed now, we’ll get them changed with a new government,” he said.

“Balance – that’s all we’re asking for, is a fair balance and we’re prepared to put the scientific issues in place, not the political issues. That’s what’s killing us.”

Mr Elmes said the government was out of touch with farmers and their needs.

“We have to be able to keep moving our business forward,” he said.

“What would happen if the government said we’ll only allow 30 visitors out on the Great Barrier Reef? what would those tourist

industries do? what they’re saying to us is that we’re only going to allow you a certain number of cattle. We’re not going to let you move your business any further forward, so we can’t operate.

“Unless we can turn things around, it’s the end of the pastoral industry in cape York.”

Showtime FMX set to draw bumper crowds to Atherton Show Bumper crowds are expected at Atherton Show this year, thanks to a wild and exciting headline act.

Showtime FMX has been secured for two daily shows at the annual event on July 9 and 10.

Billed as Australia’s original, longest running and most successful freestyle moto x team, the performers

will showing off their moves straight from the Townsville V8s thanks to Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society and Betta Home Living Australia.

Showgoers will be on the edge of their seats as they watch the riders soar through the air performing tricks such as rock solids, turn downs, heart attacks, backflips, backflip vari-

ations and more.

The Atherton Show is during the school holidays this year with the public holiday on Tuesday July 10.

Families are encouraged to get in early and pre-purchase their family pass tickets (2a,3c) from June 1 to save.

Family Passes are not available on the gates.

New app leads to safer choices for new drivers An innovative new app to help first time car buyers find the safest vehicle they can afford was released recently.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the app would improve safety

for new drivers, particularly young drivers.

“There is evidence young drivers are more likely to drive smaller, older cars that don’t always come out better off in a crash because they have less modern

safety features,” Mr Bailey said.

“It’s confronting that young drivers and riders account for 22 per cent of people involved in serious crashes, but only make up 14 per cent of Queensland’s

licence holders.

“Their choice of older vehicles puts them at

even greater risk, especially if the car does not have air bags or stability control.

“However, market research shows many people do not know what to look

for or where to find information about a car’s safety rating.”

Mr Bailey said because many young people based their vehicle selection on looks and costs, the SafeCars app increases aware-

ness about the relative safety performance of different vehicles in the same price range.

“It is the perfect tool for young people, who conduct a large amount of their vehicle research online,” Mr Bailey said.

Kuranda Range road on priority list

Locals urged to have their say on dangerous roads RACQ is calling on Tablelands motorists to help identify Cairns’ most dangerous roads in need of urgent attention – with the Kuranda Range featuring high on their list of priorities.

The State’s peak motoring body will be using the results to lobby local, state and federal government’s to “prioritise funding to upgrade and maintain these roads”.

“As drivers, we’re all too familiar with those frustrating and troublesome roads in our area.

Whether it’s a road that’s full of potholes, is narrow, lacks overtaking lanes and line markings,

or is the first to go under when it rains – we need your help in pinpointing it,” said RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross.

“Last time we ran our survey more than 400 sub-standard roads were identified across the State.”

During the 2016 Federal Election RACQ called for funding to continue to improve safety on the Kennedy Highway while protecting the national heritage of the area.

“This is a particularly steep and twisting range road with a poor crash history,” said RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie of the Kuranda

Range Road.

“Drivers need to take extra care when navigating this stretch of the Kennedy Highway, especially around the curves.”

Ms Ritchie said she believes Transport and Main Roads should preserve the range’s heritage by continuing to fund safety upgrades “that focus on curve widening, additional safety barriers and localised widenings to allow faster vehicles to overtake slow moving traffic”.

“The ‘Kuranda Range Road’ is included in the Kennedy Highway improvements listed in RACQ’s Mobility Mat-

ters 2017-2021,” she said.

“We also encourage the department to focus on installation of intelligent signs that warn about speeding, and substandard curves, adverse weather or slippery surface conditions.

“We need a road system that works for all Queenslanders and it’s important the far northern region isn’t forgotten.”

Ms Ross said previous surveys had identified the need for improvements to the Captain Cook and Kennedy highways.

“We all deserve to have a say on where

we want our rates and taxes spent – but we can’t help get the right roads fixed if we don’t know where they are,” she said.

EOI-MSC2018-02 GREEN WASTE MANAGEMENT Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced green waste contractors to undertake the management of Council’s Green Waste received at the Mareeba and Kuranda Waste Transfer Stations.

MSC currently accepts commercial and domestic Green Waste at all its waste transfer stations at no charge. Mareeba and Kuranda Waste Transfer Stations receive the bulk of Green Waste being disposed of in the Shire.

Bull riders unite for injured mate

HUNDREDS of people made the trip out to Biboohra on Saturday night to cheer on some of the country’s best bull riders – all in the name of a great cause.

‘Slamin’ 4 Sam’ was a one off event created by the friends of Sam O’Connor, a former PBR bull rider who broke his back on New Year’s Eve in

a bull riding accident.

Doctors said he would never walk again, but determined to prove them wrong he is hoping to raise the funds to get through expensive rehab sessions, which is where his mates stepped in.

“I remember everything from the accident,” Sam said on Saturday night in Biboohra.

“The bull gave me a little bump on my back and my legs went over my

head and it was like a light going off.”

His PBR bull riding friends have rallied around and supported him in many ways – including making the trip to the Far North to take part in the Biboohra event and raise some much needed funds.

“Having the PBR helping you out, it gives you a bit more hope that you’re going to work it all out,” said Sam. “You never expect this

to happen to you.”

Tablelands Regional Councillor Anthony Ball took over the microphone halfway through the event to auction off a large number of goods donated from local companies. Over $13,000 was raised from the auction alone, with more adding to the fund for Sam through ticket sales and a raffle.

The event was held on a private property on Hume Road.

Mareeba Cricket club’s Trisha Spry has done it again and picked up another award to add to her collection. Trish was last week awarded the second place prize for Volunteer of the Year for the whole of Australia. Trish travelled to Melbourne for the second annual ‘A Sport for All’ Community Cricket Awards held at the Junction Oval.

Roosters big 34-12 win over leaders

A double from forwards James Clark and Jack Willis has helped the Atherton Roosters claim a 34-12 win over ladder leaders Cairns Brothers on Saturday night.

Played on a wet and slippery track under the new lights at the Atherton JRL field, the win gave the Roosters five from six for the season. It was a tough battle from the start as both sides went hard in defence before the Roosters got a breakthrough at the 20th minutes when winger Jesse Carleton crossed in the corner.

Jack Willis followed soon after and this gave the Roosters a 12-0 edge at the break. The second session opened with the Roosters crossing three times in the space for ten minutes and now fronted the contest 28-0 with 30 minutes remaining.

Brothers did get on the

scoreboard at the 68th and 74 the minutes but a try to Jermaine Pedro wrapped up an impressive night for the Roosters.

Roosters forward James Clark returned for the match from Northern Pride duties and was outstanding up the middle in attack.

Frustrating afternoon for Bulls The Mareeba Bulls have recorded their second loss at home this season after a late penalty gave the Edge Hill Tigers a 2-1 win, in a match where the home side looked the better for majority of the 90 minutes.

The Bulls went into the match on the back of last weekends bye, meanwhile the Tigers came up the hill smarting from the 5-1 loss to the Rangers. Despite the Tigers coming out early trying to physically push the Bulls around, the homeside settled and looked the better side.

But against the run of play, the away side did take the lead, but the Bulls hit back almost immediately with Leon Perosini scoring his second of the campaign, finishing off well at the back post from a Steven Cater cross.

The home side continued to boss the Tigers around the park, but were unable to find the go ahead goal, until the away side

broke the heart of the Bulls supporters converting from the penalty spot with only minutes left on the clock giving them their first win of the season.

The Bulls reserves side recorded their second win the season with another impressive performance coming away with a 5-0 drubbing over the Tigers.

The young reserves are beginning to find their feet in the competition and were boosted with Damian Wildman returning and scoring three goals.

The ladies looked sluggish after their midweek draw with the JCU Strikers and the Tigers raced to a 3-0 lead inside the opening 45 minutes.

In the second period the lady Bulls did play some better football, but with tiring legs, the Tigers got a fourth and recorded a 4-0 win over the Bulls in the ladies division.

“Hopefully if we can cut out the errors and put together a full 80 minutes than we can come home with the chocolates.”
