Kindy kids learn about plants for Mother’s Day

Littlies from Mareeba’s C&K Kindy were treated to an outing last week to learn more about plants and how they grow.

Mareeba Garden Centre hosted the children who got to walk around and look at all the plants on display before potting their own seedlings to take home for mum for Mother’s Day. Co-Teacher Director Dianne Pirovich said it was something they did every year.

“It’s bi-fold,” she said.

“It’s special potting the plants for Mother’s Day and it’s also buying our plants for our vegetable garden back at the centre.”

The kindy kids decorate a special pot for their plant.

“We’ve been doing this for 10 years,” said Mrs Pirovich.

“It’s been a wonderful experience for the four kindy centres that come.”

Mrs Pirovich said there were still vacancies at the Stewart Street C&K Kindy centre if parents wanted to enquire. She also wanted to thank Joy and Kat from Mareeba Garden Centre for their support of the initiative.

Helping hand for Tolga apprentice Cody Ciranni won a $500 grant from Rheem Australia.

Tolga apprentice Cody Ciranni has won a share of $30,000 as part of the 2018 Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants.

While growing up on a farm gave the second-year apprentice a strong work ethic, Cody prefers plumbing’s more stable career, without the risks that often come with working the land.

“Cody stood out from the many other applicants

this year thanks to his strong work ethic and a glowing report from his employers Lorene and Peter Maloberti of Peter’s Plumbing who say they feel ‘very lucky to have him working for them’,” said Rheem Chief Operating Officer Chris Taylor.

“They also said he invests 100 per cent effort into everything he does.”

The $500 Recognition Award will help Cody

purchase tools and meet his travel expenses – he travels 30km to get to work and does a 240km round trip to North Region TAFE in Cairns.

When he completes his apprenticeship, Cody and his cousin – the one who inspired him to become a plumber – hope to start their own plumbing business.

For the sixth year, Rheem Australia, the coun-

try’s leading water heater manufacturer, has awarded 10 deserving apprentice plumbers with a total of $30,000 as part of the 2018 Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants.

It’s hoped the grants will entice more apprenticeships and help those plumbing apprentices that are doing it tough.

Research shows that apprentices are struggling with the cost of living.

Deputy PM flies up for funding launch

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack made his way to the Tablelands on Monday to officially announce an $11.6 million upgrade of the MareebaDimbulah Water Supply Scheme.

The federal funding was announced last week as part of the budget which will go towards a further $16.8million from Sunwater to improve the efficiency of water supply infrastructure.

Mr McCormack, together with Senator Ian Macdonald met with industry officials including Sunwater CEO Nicole Hollows and Chairman of the Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation

area committee Joe Moro to launch the announcement near Walkamin.

Mr Moro said it was great news and what he hoped would be the start of further development of water implementation for the region.

“We’re very happy with the announcement and thank the federal government for this funding but there’s a lot more to be done in this area,” he said.

“It’s important that we finally have a project that will ‘do’ rather than ‘look at’ and this is something that will be implemented very quickly.”

Mr Moro has spoken previously of a three point plan that as well as the modernisation of the scheme also includes the

construction of Nullinga Dam and a pipe to tunnel water from North Johnstone River near Malanda to Kenny Creek, a tributary of the Barron River.

He said that without all three projects, Tableland farmers are unlikely to see a significant improvement in their water supply.

“The Nullinga feasibility study showed that there’s another 40,000 mega litres that could be saved and hopefully this is the start of that,” he said.

“This is the first stage and is one of the easiest, cheapest options so far.

“We had been lobbying with Sunwater for this and had talked to the minister about it. Warren Entsch’s office was also very involved in this outcome.”

Budget benefits for Tablelanders The Tablelands received a couple of bonuses from the federal budget last week, including tax relief measures that will really benefit the region.

The government announced that they would be providing middle income earners with an extra $530 in their pocket through tax relief.

“The first round of tax cuts are of benefit to businesses,” said Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro. “Hopefully that

will increase spending locally. They’re not big amounts but they all add up.”

Mr Moro said that generally the Chamber is happy with the budget, but he is disappointed that no money will be spent on developing communications in the region. “We’re a bit disappointed there’s no improvement for black spot mobile phone coverage,” he said. “We believe that more work needs to be done in that area.”

90th celebration for great grandmother Evelyn Evans

Evelyn Evans was surrounded by family last Wednesday who flew in from all over the country to be by her side as she reached the grand old age of 90.

The Mareeba Garden Settlement resident was the centre of attention on Wednesday as a birthday party was held in her honour.

Mother of five, grandmother of nine and greatgrandmother of nine, Evelyn has lived in Mareeba since 1957.

Known locally for her “wicked sense of humour”, Evelyn spent many years working at Jack and Newells (now IGA) and was devoted to her children Colin, Graham, Rhonda, Loretta and Stephen.

“Mum was a hard working mother that we all loved to death,” said Graham.

“She worked some jobs over the years when she and dad separated and after that she was the sole breadwinner for a good number of years.”

Evelyn re-married in 1981 to Tom who lives in Mareeba and drives to the Garden Settlement every

day to be by her side.

One of two children, Evelyn grew up on a sheep farm in Ned Kelly country, rural Victoria.

She loved Mareeba after moving here but with all of her family back home, the highlight of her year was going back for a holiday to

see everyone.

Popular and funny, Evelyn was known as a hard worker.

“There were tough times in those days,” said Rhonda, remembering when she and her siblings were small and Evelyn was on her own. “Stephen the

youngest was just a baby when dad left. Dad’s mother was very good to us and helped out where and when she could.”

When she wasn’t working or raising her family, Evelyn was a keen tennis player, seamstress and painter but most famous for

her hilarious poetry.

“She loved making up these little poems if it was your birthday or a special occasion or something,” said Rhonda.

“Sometimes they were a bit naughty! And always really funny.”

A group of contractors working on Mt Emerald Wind Farm, along with a few friends, will be taking part in the Great Wheelbarrow Race this weekend for the first time.

2018 McDonald’s Great Wheelbarrow Race

Age no barrier for team of ex-servicemen For the sixth year running Dad’s Army will be entering the Great Wheelbarrow Race and competing against absolutely nobody as they are the only team in their category – again.

Just as well as the average age of their 10 strong team is 70 years old. Not that you’d think it.

The self-confessed gym-junkies have just produced a slighty risqué calendar to help raise funds for their charity of choice this year – Mareeba Hospital.

Frank ‘The Fossil’ Thelan, John Stirrup, Graham Morrow, Jimmy Ingram, John Chohan, Gary Morgan, Laurie Leggett, Peter Gerdes, Alan Gale, Tony Bouckeart are mostly Tablelanders hailing from Mareeba, Atherton and Tolga.

They’re also ex-servicemen with a mix of Navy, Army and Air Force veterans.

Passionate about the race and great mates to boot, the guys probably train harder than anyone else in the competition.

“We finish one raise and then we’re straight back

“There were times when by the time we got to Almaden I was just a ball of knots and had the girls not been there that time, I honestly didn’t think that I would be running the next morning. But they got into all of us with their elbows and ironed us out.

“We never would have been able to do it without Essential Fitness and the girls from the physio.”

Although some members the team have changed over the years, the core group has remained the same.

“It’s a good bunch of blokes,” said Gary.

“We all had a desire to

want to get fit and we’ve been going a few years and we just want to stay fit.

You might hear some of the young ones saying they’re gym junkies, well we’re gym junkies as well now.”

Although the youngest member of their team is a sprightly 55, the oldest is 81 – Frank Thelan.

A lot of the people in the community think they’re crazy for even contemplating the gruelling 140km three day race.

“When we go to the council and pay our fees, they say you blokes are a mob of idiots and we say we know that, it helps!” laughed Gary.

“The main thing is keeping ourselves fit at our

age and it’s a good event.”

The men were given the idea of creating a calendar to sell as a fundraising endeavour, along with some 100 boards. They won’t be ready for a few more weeks, but will be available locally to buy for $20.

It will be a great opportunity to see the men in all their glory. Literally.

“We tried to do it tastefully,” they laughed.

“We’ll see how it goes this year and if it goes alright we might do a G rated one and an R rated one.”

Dad’s Army will be competing in the Over 50s category. Cheer them home at the Mareeba Rodeo grounds on Sunday from around 10am.

Almost $2million raised over 15 years

With Chair of the McDonald’s Great Wheelbarrow Race, Councillor Nipper Brown From doctors to school students, accountants, nurses, veterans and engineers; this year will see over 300 people from all walks of life (ages 13 to 81) compete in the 15th annual McDonald’s Great Wheelbarrow Race.

In 2004, as a tribute to these early pioneers and to honour their amazing trail-blazing feats, the road between Mareeba and Chillagoe was named the Wheelbarrow Way and that was the start of what is now one of the region’s most unique events on the calendar.

The event has always

been a motivation for many to raise money for their chosen charity or cause. This year we hope to crack the $2M mark which is outstanding.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in the race’s evolution over the past 15 years. To the former committee chairs and members, volunteers, supporters, community groups and council staff - thank you for contribution and enthusiasm in creating such a wonderful event for the Shire.

Sugar mill on track for milestone season While work continues to progress on construction of MSF Sugar’s Green Energy Power Plant, the milestone project has not had an impact on the start of the 2018 crush with the Tableland Mill on track to commence operations on June 5.

Tableland Mill Manager Kirk Lang said the factory had been prepared ahead of the crush to ensure a timely start and following successful steam trials early this month, growers and residents living nearby will soon be able to see the signature steam coming from the boiler stack.

“Normal maintenance has been undertaken during the non-crushing season and we expect a good startup this year, with our

usual high level of reliability and very little downtime for the factory throughout the crush.

“Our operations have not been impacted by construction of MSF Sugar’s first Green Energy Power Plant, which itself now has 185 people actively working on the site each day.

This is in addition to the 172 people we directly employ during crushing season,” he said.

The Mill will operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week until mid-November with an expected crushing rate of 195 tonnes per hour, and with the Green Energy Power Plant due to be turned-on mid-season to convert the Mill’s biomass waste into baseload

electricity, the workforce is gearing up for a milestone year.

According to Mr. Lang, “This is a milestone crushing season for us as in addition to our regular operations, for the first time in MSF Sugar’s history the Tableland Mill will turn its 100 per cent renewable sugarcane fibre known as bagasse into baseload green electricity on a commercial scale”.

While estimates indicate an average sized crop, the region experienced a strong wet season this year with solid rainfall occurring during January and February, filling the Tinaroo Dam to a level of 96.3 per cent capacity.

This is a significant

increase on 2017 levels which saw Tinaroo Dam sitting at 38 per cent capacity at the end of the 2017 crushing season.

With SunWater allocations to growers now sitting at 100%, the 2018 crop estimate of 712,000 tonnes is similar to the 2017 season, when the mill crushed a total of 708,572 tonnes of sugarcane.

Overall weather conditions continue to be favourable for growers and attention will soon turn to the all-important Commercial Cane Sugar (CCS) results, which provide an estimate of the sugar yield from cane supplied to the Mill. The most dominant sugarcane varieties for the region are K228 and K208.

Crocodiles back on the agenda KAP State Member for Hill Shane Knuth is demanding public hearings on KAP’s Safer Waterways Bill 2018 be held in Northern Queensland.

The Innovation, Tourism Development and Environment Committee will oversee the Bill that was introduced into Parliament

by Shane Knuth on the 21st March, with a report due to be tabled to Parliament on September 24 this

year.

“The Bill is designed to take back our populated waterways from the threat of crocodiles, particularly in North Queensland and to provide egg harvesting and other opportunities to indigenous and other land holders throughout the north, particularly the Cape,” Mr Knuth said.

“It is an important issue which affects North Queenslanders, so I have

written to the committee demanding public hearings be conducted in Ingham, Innisfail, Cairns, Port Douglas and Cape York. I will be again enforcing this when I appear before the committee in Brisbane this Monday.”

The Bill was originally in the committee process prior to last year’s election but had to be reintroduced once the new parliament was formed.

“It has been a long process, which is disappointing,’’ Mr Knuth said.

“We saw recently the Government push through their vegetation bill in six weeks, yet a bill that is designed to protect life and livelihood will take six months to table in parliament.

“It is a stark reminder of how the State Government treats those outside of the south-east corner.”

Volunteers thanked at centre open day

Providing help, advice and services to struggling members of the community is a tough job for anyone – especially when you volunteer your time to do it.

But thankfully the men and women who offer their time free of charge at the Mareeba Community Centre love what they do.

“It’s a beautiful organisation to be a part of and it’s delivering services across the community that are in so much need, ser-

vices for the elderly, for women and others,” said secretary of the centre Terri Goodhew.

Terri was one of 15 of the centre’s volunteers that were thanked with awards last Thursday as part of an Open Day that also gave visitors a chance to see the newly renovated building, thanks to State Government funding.

The Community Centre is a lifeline for many low socio-economic families in Mareeba. The neighbourhood centre provides information, advice and a

referral services including family support services, mental health support services and a No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) that enables community members living on a low income to access fair, safe and equitable interest free loans.

“Being able to deliver services across the community is fantastic,” said Terri.

“The NILS loan scheme is amazing. Because so many of our clients prior to this, their only recourse to get their stuff was the likes of Radio Rentals and paying $150 a month or

something, which goes on for forever and they never actually own it. So they can come to us, get a NILS loan and it’s theirs. The repayments are very reasonable.”

Between 30 and 40 people on average access the community centre daily.

Last Thursday’s Open Day was well attended by members of the community including Mareeba Shire councillors who gave out awards.

Local businesses donated prizes for a luck door raffle.

Endangered plant discovered at old mine

Work to clean up a legacy of Far North Queensland’s mining history has led to the surprise discovery of a critically endangered plant.

Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said workers were on site at Target Gully near Queensland’s historic tin mining town of Irvinebank undertaking remediation of an old tailings dam.

As part of preparation for the project, hundreds of critically endangered purple wattle were discovered around the dam.

“Mining in Queensland dates back thousands of years to Aborigines mining for stone and ochre but with that long, proud history comes a legacy of abandoned mines,” Dr Lynham

said. “Our abandoned mines experts maintain public and environmental safety around the state at a number of sites, including Mount Morgan and in the former gold mining centre of Gympie.

“Two years ago, the Palaszczuk Government committed $42 million over five years to managing public safety risks at abandoned mine sites like Target Gully.

“I am particularly excited about the Target Gully project because it has provided the opportunity to work with the local traditional owners, the BarBarrum People.”

Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy staff have been work-

ing with the Mbabaram Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) and as part of this partnership, Traditional Owners have helped identify native plants to revegetate the area.

During survey work, they identified hundreds of critically endangered purple wattle, when only 500 plants had been estimated to remain in the wild.

MAC Director Shelton Murphy said his Board saw the Target Gully project as a step in the right direction in building confidence and future prosperity for the Bar-Barrum People.

Local businesses have been employed to undertake remediation work, including earthworks to reprofile the tailings.

Syntropic Agriculture flourishes on Tablelands The ground-breaking, abundance producing ‘Syntropic Agriculture’ system was introduced to regional farmers in Tolga recently.

Larger and smaller-scale farmers travelled from as far as Townsville to attend the introductory course by Syntropic Farms Australia national presenter Thiago Barbosa.

Thiago has trained with Ernst Gotsch who has developed the system in different landscapes for the past thirty years, basing the practice on mimicking the quantity and quality of

consolidated life-forms in a rainforest, which naturally exudes syntropy (exponential abundance of life). Ernst has famously brought large tracts of badly degraded bare land back to life with Syntropy, revitalising underground water systems and bringing permanent water back to previously dry creek beds (see ‘Life in Syntropy’ on youtube).

The Syntropic system uses ground covers and stratification of various food and bio-mass producing layers which are used to ‘feed’ the main crop

with all the nutrients required to thrive, while also providing the farmer with multiple produce cycles of various crops throughout the seasons.

Syntropic Agriculture creates exponential opportunities for abundance, while building soils, saving water, supporting pollinators, and diversifying local food systems, organically.

Jane Hawes, an intergenerational farmer training with the Syntropic system, has set up various proto-type examples at Petals Family Farm at Tol-

ga, so that farmers currently growing monoculture crops of (eg.) mango, avocado, coffee, banana, etc., can see how the Syntropic systems can be integrated into existing orchards.

Farmers attending the course gained valuable practical and experiential knowledge, with a 40 metre bed being planted with over 400 plants from vegetable seedlings to fruit trees.

Bulls fall short against Rangers Two lapses in concentration have cost the Bulls three points against the Marlin Coast Rangers in what was otherwise an even contest at Lindsay Australia stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides went into match in good form. With both coming off last start wins the sides traded blows early, before homeside centre back Nicholas Tallarico succumbing to a knee injury forcing the Bulls into a defensive reshuffle. It took time for the new look backline to settle and the Rangers took full advantage opening the scoring off a throw in after the Bulls allowed the ball to bounce in the penalty area.

Bulls substitute Dylan Cummings scored with his first touch of ball to make it 1-1 and just as the half looked to be closing, the Rangers again scored off a set piece, with the Bulls again unable to deal with a free kick onto the box, with a Rangers striker heading into the goal unmarked at the back post to bring the score to 2-1 to the away side at halftime.

The second half saw the Bulls take some control,

but the match turned into a arm-wrestle, with both keepers called into action.

Bulls custodian Adrian Vedelago kept the Rangers at bay with a string of fine saves, and despite the efforts of Steven Cater, Darcey McKormack and Bryson Wells going forward, the homeside was unable to draw level, with the match finishing 2-1 to the Rangers.

The highlight of the day was the Bulls Reserves who came away with their first victory of the season with a impressive 3-1 over the Rangers.

Dennis Allen gave the Bulls a 1-0 at halftime and in the second half youngsters Mason Wells and Dylan Cummings gave the Bulls a 3-0 lead before the away side got one back late in the half.

The Bulls youth boys learnt some tough lessons in the Tableland Derby against the Atherton Eagles, with the young Bulls totally outplaying the Atherton boys in the first half and despite enjoying a number of clear goal scoring opportunities, took a 1-0 lead in the break. On Friday night the Bulls 2nd division boys travelled down the Stratford and enjoyed a strong 6-1 win over the Dolphins

to remain undefeated. The Bulls 1st division boys travelled down to Port Douglas to take on the Dragons and came home with one point

after a tough 2-2 draw to also remain undefeated.

This weekend, the Bulls premier mens, reserves and youth all have the bye,

while the 2nd division boys host the Dimbulah Barras at home, and the 1st division boys travel to Trinity Beach to take on Innisfail.

Bush races at their best with a high calibre of competition was followed by a late night cabaret and rodeo.

Attended by cowboys and cowgirls from near and far, the arena was packed with spectators wanting to catch a glimpse of the events.
