A plague of wallabies put an end to the races at the Mareeba Annuals on Saturday with the track events relocated to Cairns in the name of safety.

In a disappointing turn of events for the club, racehorse trainers and owners boycotted the races claiming track damage made it unsafe for the horses after an inspection on Wednesday led to the discovery of multiple

holes and turf irregularities. Mareeba Turf Club officials supported their decision and are working hard to fix the track ready for the next meeting on Boxing Day. “The club did put too much

Kuranda koalas give science a helping hand By Rebecca Wallis

Collecting koala poo and sending it off in the post would definitely rank as one of Meg Markle’s more unusual tasks as the wildlife manager at Kuranda’s Koala Gardens. Thankfully it was all in the name of research after the tourism venue was contacted by OWAD Environment in south east Queensland. The ecology consultants use detection dogs to track koala populations. “We were contacted by one of the company owners, Olivia Woosnam, to ask if we could provide koala scat to assist scenttrain detection dogs to help them locate any populations up here in North Queensland,” said Ms Markle. “They specifically wanted feces from North Queensland koalas in case there was any difference to the smell compared with the animals they typically work with which, until now, had only been in New South Wales and as far north in Queensland as Mackay. So, I sent away poo in the mail.” Ms Markle said the koalas were originally from south east Queensland but hoped that by assisting the researchers it would un-

cover a small contingent of koalas that were thought to be living on the Tablelands. “It’s not been confirmed but there are thought to be a small

group of koalas living near Ravenshoe,” she said. “Four or five years ago a koala was rescued from that area and taken to Cairns Zoo.”

OWAD Environment uses specially-trained Springer Spaniels to track down koala poo for later analysis for DNA profiling, gender identification, and health screen-

ing. A company spokesperson said they could not confirm whether they were tracking koalas on the Tablelands.

Nullinga Dam report must be released LNP politician Deb Frecklington has attacked the Queensland government for dragging their feet over the proposed Nullinga Dam, saying farmers and ratepayers on the Tablelands were “being hung out to dry”. Ms Frecklington said the Labor government is refusing to release a feasibility study into the

dam at a time when water was sorely needed. Should it go ahead, the dam would be built on the Walsh River and provide water for irrigation locally and to serve residential purpose in Cairns. “The Federal Government provided $5 million from the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund for the feasibility study that we know was

finished six months ago, but still hasn’t been released,” Ms Frecklington said in a statement last week. “This is just another cover-up from a do-nothing government.” But chairman for the Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Scheme Joe Moro said irrigators on the Tablelands were not concerned. “We were told it would be released in the early part

of next year,” he said. “I would rather the government took their time to get it right than put out a half-baked report that might have issues.” Mr Moro said the dam would not solve water issues for all Tablelands farmers as it would only service part of the region and that the cost of the water was a concern. “Until we see the business case it’s very hard to

say whether Nullinga is a goer or not,” he said. “A lot of the Nullinga study has been focused on the Cairns perspective and for us it is more of a primary concern that we look closer at the Johnson Diversion or a modernization of the current scheme.” Mr Moro said if the dam went ahead it would ease the pressure on Tinaroo Dam but that it was being

focused more on what it could provide for Cairns. Ms Frecklington said the delay in providing the report was a deliberate attempt to ignore Far North Queensland farmers. “This is just another cover-up from a do-nothing government,” she said. “Labor needs to come clean, stop the delays and release the feasibility report into Nullinga Dam.”

Plea for piece of history to be kept By Rebecca Wallis

A Tablelands family has pleaded with authorities to preserve an important piece of Atherton’s history. Betty Marnock with the backing of her family and a group of friends has approached Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth, Queensland Health and Cairns Hinterland and Health Board to try and persuade them to retain the building previously used as the nurses quarters. The 104-year-old hospital is due for a $230 million overhaul that was announced in the 201617 budget and the historic Community Health building (previously the nurses quarters) will not be retained. “My mum and dad were married on the steps of the nursing quarters,” said Mrs Marnock nee Griffin. “Atherton is losing a lot of its old heritage. Everything is becoming square boxes with windows.” Mrs Marnock’s family has lived on the Tablelands since the early 1900s. Mrs Marnock was born in the hospital and her mum, Theresa Griffin (Nolan), was one of the head cooks at the hospital in the late 1930s. “I feel like it would be such a shame to knock

down such a beautiful facade,” said Mrs Marnock. “The quarters is now the one remaining tangible, visual reminder of the trials and tribulations of the Atherton nursing history.” Although the group is supportive of a new hospital for the town, Mrs Marnock said she hopes the building will be retained as some sort of memorial to Atherton’s rich history. But in an online statement Queensland Health state that the building will

The causeway is too low and is regularly overtopped by flood waters, which creates a severe safety hazard during the wet season for motorists. Works will improve the causeway’s flood immunity. be demolished due to the fact that it “no longer allows for the flexibility required to deliver contemporary models of health services it once did. “It also requires ongoing, and increasingly, costly maintenance.” The statement does go on to say that the project team behind the redevelopment are looking at ways to recognise the historical significance and memories of the building. “Staff and community

members will be offered the opportunity to get involved in activities that will capture and convey the heritage of the building for future generations to come.” Mrs Marnock suggested the building be retained as a museum. “Preservation of the façade and foyer of this heritage structure will serve as a reminder of the history of the Tablelands community. It will be like a page in an open history book, which is ever present

to be seen and read by all passing,” she said. “Preserving the connection to the past and the sense of place in every community is vitally important. “We implore all who may be involved in this to consider alternatives to full demolition and consider preservation of, at least the Quarters’ ‘façade’, as a historical feature for our growing community, identity and future generations.”

DIMBULAH girl Brooke Buckingham is over the moon with her 1st Runner-Up sash and prizes from the Australian Rodeo Queen Quest on the weekend. Held on the Gold Coast last week with judging on Saturday night, Brooke said the opportunity to compete was “an amazing experience.” “The Quest is something all women should put on their bucket list as it teaches you so many life skills,” she said.

“I am very excited to support the newly crowned Queen, Rebekah. She has a beautiful soul inside and out!” Brooke was also voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow competitors. “I am so thankful and blessed and have made friendships that I will cherish forever.” Fellow Tablelands entrant Cherie Bramich fromHerberton was crowned 3rd Runner-Up and won the Portfolio Award and Miss Fundraiser.

Fred Starck, Kerry Geck, Sue and The Express editor Carl Portella teaming up for the photography competition.

A group of Tablelands photography enthusiasts are teaming up for a competition that will see winners’ photos published in The Express. Tablelands and Surrounding Photography Group is the brainchild of Kerry Geck, a keen local photographer who saw an opportunity to promote the work of visiting and local amateur photographers. “There are so many wonderful photographers in the area and we thought this would be a really fun way of getting them all together,” she said. “As an amateur photographer, it’s such a buzz getting your photo printed in the paper.” Kerry enlisted the help of other keen photographers based on the Tablelands to help her launch the competition which will see photos uploaded to a Facebook page before being judged online. The wining pic will be published in The Express. Michelle Kerley, Sue and Fred Starck are all

helping Kerry with the idea and preliminary promotion of the competition has already garnered huge interest. The competition is open to backpackers, grey nomads and all visitors to the area. Keen photographers should join the Facebook group Tablelands and Surrounding Photography Group. A different theme will be posted each week as chosen by the previous week’s winner. Once you have uploaded your photo to the group, everyone can vote for their favourite and the photo with the most votes will win. That photo will be used as the cover image for the page and in the The Express newspaper. The current theme is ‘landscape’. Submit your entries online now. Deadline for the first competition is Thursday, September 28 at midday. Winners will be published in the October 4 edition of The Express.

500 wallabies a day ruin track for racing From P1

“A week out and the trainers and jockeys weren’t happy that it was going to be settled in time and they lost confidence in the track.” Over 500 wallabies at a time make their way on to the course daily looking for feed in what has been a long dry spell. The volunteer organisers were hoping that a roo proof fence would be ready for the event but it was unable to be finished in time. It’s not the first time the track has been decimated

by digging wallabies, but Mr Thurlow said it was the first time the damage had been done to such an extent. “They’re desperate this year because it’s so dry everywhere,” he said. “Everyone else is complaining as well – the irrigators etc, they’re chewing their sprinklers etc and they’re chewing ours here as well.” Keen to keep the club alive and maintain its reputation as one of the best country clubs in the region, Mr Thurlow said the track will be in top condition for

the next race on Boxing Day. “The fence will be finished soon – it’s half finished now,” he said. “They’ll be re-sheeting the track next week – a layer of dirt and we’ll roll that in and spread it in and we’ll also fertilise and keep the water in and it should be good.” Despite the upset over the racing, the off-track entertainment still went ahead with nearly 1000 people pouring through the gates throughout the day. Fashions on the Field, live music, southern bet-

ting and games such as a schooner race and the human horse race still went ahead. Over 30 marquees were filled with revelers who came out to support the club and enjoy a fantastic day of fun as is synonymous with Mareeba Turf Club. “We’re really glad so many people came out to support the day.” Racing action now heads to Tolga this Satur- Mareeba Turf Club’s John Thurlow is confident the track will be in tip top day for the Atherton Turf condition by the time of the next race meet on Boxing Day. Ambulance week celebrations

Ambulance officers David Lee from Mount Garnet and Lachlan Rogers from Atherton held a show case of their skills on Main Street, Atherton last Thursday as part of Ambulance Week.

PAGE 6 The Express, Wednesday, September 20, 2017

ONE hundred and twenty five years since the creation of ambulance services in Queensland, depots across the Tablelands celebrated Ambulance Week. Paramedics in Ravenshoe, Atherton and Mareeba last week invited the community in joining them for the celebrations which ran from September 11 to 15. Held each year around the anniversary of the state’s first civil ambulance service, Ambulance Week is a perfect opportunity to say thanks to the dedicated ambulance staff and volunteers who work to keep Queenslanders safe all year round. In the early days, ambulance officers pushed litters (carts) to transport patients to hospital; some walking up to 55km a day. In its first year as the City Ambulance Transport Brigade in 1893, 400 call outs were received that covered 1,867km. Today, the QAS answers about 730,000 calls for help each year and responds to incidents from 287 locations across the state. It has a workforce of more than 4,000 staff who are supported by about 1,500 volunteers. Activities at the stations included CPR and defibrillator demonstrations, vehicle displays and morning tea.

Remembering a hero 100 years after his death

A Tablelands man who fought in World War I is being remembered today, 100 years after his death. Private William Robert Bell was well known in the Herberton and Chillagoe mining community and after enlisting in the army at the age of 22 spent two years fighting in Europe before he was killed in action at Hell Fire Corner in Belgium on September 20, 1917. His body was never found but records of Bell’s death appear in the Red Cross Missing and Wounded File. “He had been with the Battalion only a few weeks… I saw him being carried back, wounded, on a stretcher during our advance at Polygon Wood, on 20th Sept….he had been hit in the head and legs… Bell was being carried on a stretcher, when a shell came over and killed him and also the stretcher bearers,” it said. The Howe-Bell family who still live on the Tablelands will be “raising a glass” in his honour today.

The youngest of 12 children, William often wrote letters home, many of which have been preserved. The last letter they received from him read: “The last letter I got from you was written on about the first of April and that was the last one I have had and …. That was telling me about mother’s death… don’t forget to write. One likes to get letters from home and I miss getting them from Mum. I will come to a close with best love.” Sadly, after his death, the family received undelivered parcels of knitted socks, cakes and biscuits that they had sent to him on the front. 2017 is also the 100 Year Anniversary of the Battle of Menin Road, an offensive operation and part of the Third Battle of Ypres on the Western Front, undertaken by the British and their allies. Ypres, in Belgium was the centre of sustained and intense fighting during World War One. Menin

Road was the main route running east from the town. Now known as the Battle of Passchendaele, it was planned in order that the British would break through the strongly fortified German defences enclosing Ypres and then sweep on to the occupied Belgian coast where the Germans had their submarine bases. For four years, the main easterly access for the British Army to Ypres was via the twelve mile Ypres-Menin Road. About a mile out of Ypres, the Ypres-Roulers railway crossed the road. This intersection provided a perfect bull’s eye for German gunners and their spotters. It was a place where troops, supply trains and artillery caissons were extremely vulnerable. The location became notorious throughout the British Army as the most dangerous spot on the Western Front and the troops even mounted a sign at the crossing. Named “Hell Fire Corner”, it became standard practice for

troops to transit the site only at a full run, for horses at a gallop and for lorries with the accelerator pushed to the floor. The battlefields of Belgium were described as a hellish landscape of shattered trees, mud, shell explosions and machine-gun fire. Soldiers died by the score; blown to bits, drowning in muddy craters and suffocating on poison gas. William’s name is honoured on Panel 55 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial . Along with the names of some 6,000 Australians missing in Belgium, he also appears on the Wall of Remembrance on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders in Belgium. Although it bears the names of 55,000 soldiers, so great were the casualties that not all the names of “the missing” from the France and Belgium conflicts are listed here. Some lie in nameless graves while the remains of others have never been found.

Garden Expo a hive of activity

By Rebecca Wallis

For 30 years the Tablelands Garden and Lifestyle Expo has been donating money to local charities whilst providing a platform for gardening experts and plant lovers alike. Now in its 31st year, the expo has increased in popularity with over 2000 people expected through the gates for this year’s event on October 6 and 7. Committee member Judith Ryan said people come from outlying areas to enjoy what’s on display. “Coach loads of garden clubs come up every year,” she said. “They like to get ideas

and buy the latest plants. A lot of the nurseries don’t have the latest plants whereas private growers that we have on display tend to cultivate their own clippings over the winter and have them on sale at the expo.” 64 stalls are already booked for the weekend offering flowers, pool items, statues and landscaping designs. Information sessions will be held throughout the weekend on weed ID, planting ideas, looking after roses and paving designs. Food stalls, a giant wheelbarrow raffle and the popular scarecrow competition will round out the fun over the course of the

One of the displays from last year’s Expo.

event. This year there will also be the opportunity for visitors to browse the exhibits in a special twilight event on Friday evening, October 6, from 3pm until 8pm. “We wanted to do something different this year,” said Mrs Ryan. “There are a lot of other events on over the weekend.” Mrs Ryan said the popularity of gardening has increased significantly over the past 30 years. “The younger generation want more than just a lawn now,” she said. “They want advice on how to match the right plant to the right pot.”

OPEN DAY Saturday, 30 September 2017 - 10am to 2pm th

Over recent years monies raised through the annual expo has been donated to many associations including Riding for the Disabled, Malanda CWA and the Afghanistan Avenue of Honour in Yungaburra, several Scout and Guides groups and various Rural Fire Brigades to assist them with their special fund-raising projects. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth will be officially opening the expo on Saturday morning at 10am. The expo is being held at Malanda Showgrounds from 3pm to 8pm Friday, October 6 and then again at 8.30am Saturday morning through until 3pm. Entry is $5.

KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

When the Kingsman headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents' strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that's becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy.

Swing the night away

Tablelands Folk Festival presents ‘Django in the Djungle’ gypsy swing band this Saturday, September 23 from 7.30pm at the Yungaburra Pub. Come and swing it with this red hot gypsy swing band. Plus Le Hot Club repertoire is featured in ad-

dition to gypsy and swing tunes. Get your dose of sweet and lowdown music with vocals, guitars, bass, mandolin, flute, sax and clarinet. There will also be a folk music jam session from 3pm on the Veranda. All folkies are welcome and entry is free.

Six young ninjas Lloyd, Jay, Kai, Cole, Zane and Nya are tasked with defending their island home, called Ninjago. By night, they're gifted warriors, using their skills and awesome fleet of vehicles to fight villains and monsters. By day, they're ordinary teens struggling against their greatest enemy: high school.

Holiday fun

On Wednesday, September 27, there will then be a puppet show and craft activity from 10.30am to 11.30am. Bookings are essential for both events and can be made by calling the Mareeba Library on 4086 4622.

Mareeba Library will be hosting two events these school holidays. The team from Zoo to You will be visiting the Library on Wednesday, September 20 from 10.30am to 12noon. This year’s visit will feature marine animals.

The holidays commence with a great line up at the Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba. There are two great new shows on screen this week – THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE,

which is naturally part of the huge Lego franchise. Plus KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE, an action packed thriller and continues from where the original movie left off.

Both of these new shows start on Thursday. CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE FIRST EPIC MOVIE, rated G, will keep the children of all ages entertained through most of

September including the young at heart who enjoy a good laugh, while the THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD shows one last time this Wednesday.

CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE FIRST EPIC MOVIE Two overly imaginative pranksters named George and Harold hypnotize their principal into thinking he's a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

Tradie named Farmer of the Year A FORMER tradesman who started his farm from scratch has taken out this year’s Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award. Mareeba man Matthew Perkes was named winner of the award at Friday night’s Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Industry dinner, impressing the judges with his lime and avocado crop which has benefited from a carefully crafted fertilising and watering regime using a minimal amount of pesticides and chemicals. Mr Perkes edged out local farmers Elio Quintieri, Sam Collins and Jose Caamano for the coveted prize, which aims to continue the legacy of the late Mr Nastasi by recognising outstanding innovation and exceptional leadership in the horticultural industry across the Atherton Tablelands and Lakeland area. Mr Perkes gave up his job as a carpenter 13 years ago to start a new life as a farmer. After purchasing an old banana farm, he planted just 80 lime trees and 500 avocado trees, which have since gone on to flourish through a use of commercially available organic products such as fish fertiliser, molasses and soil stimulants that release good bacteria.

Mr Perkes has now grown his “Cobra Hill Orchard” to about 2500 avocado trees and 2500 lime trees, with plans for a further expansion of 1000 avocado trees already underway. Where possible, Mr Perkes uses liquid fertiliser on his trees to minimise wastage, ensuring minimal run off compared to granular products and an environmentally-friendly Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Hay mulch is also used. On the technology front, he uses a special smartphone app known as “TainData Tierra”, which provides him with live data gathered from probes on soil moisture levels across his orchards. This enables Mr Perkes to specifically tailor his irrigation schedule to meet the needs of his trees. Outside of farming, the father-of-three is junior president of Mareeba United Football Club and loves being involved in his local community. Mr Perkes was presented the Award by Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) president Joe Moro and Mr Nastasi’s widow, Lucy. “There’s so many quality farmers in this region, so this a huge honour,” Mr

Mareeba lime and avocado farmer Matthew Perkes has won this year’s Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award.

Perkes said. “Just to be nominated for this award was humbling. There’s a lot of respect for it and everyone knows Charlie was highly regarded for the way he ran his business over the years.” Mr Perkes said he put his success down to being relatively new to the industry and being open to try new-age farming practices. “I think I’ve taken on everybody’s advice and looked at the best way of doing things,” he said. “But I’ve got to keep moving forward and try to continuously innovate.” Mr Moro acknowledged the contribution of Mr Nastasi and his family to local farming and praised all four nominees for their individual achievements.

Could cane replace coal as energy source? Local sugar cane farmers could hold the key to Australia’s looming baseload power problem. With a number of coalfired power stations tipped to close over the next decade, the Federal Government has been urged to consider more renewable generators to fix the predicted shortage of baseload power. MSF Sugar, Australia’s largest sugarcane grower and owner of four mills in Far North Queensland (FNQ), believes its biofuels vision – the cornerstone of which is a $75 million green energy power plant currently under construction on the Atherton Tablelands – could hold the key. Driven by a desire to transform from a raw sugar company into a diversified sugarcane business with multiple bio-products, MSF Sugar has developed a vision that is underpinned by transforming agricultural products traditionally considered waste, into baseload power. MSF Sugar General Manager Business Development Hywel Cook said MSF Sugar’s plans would deliver a biofutures legacy for FNQ that will have farreaching benefits for the national baseload power

Sugar cane could soon replace coalfired power stations.

SUGAR REPORTS MOSSMAN MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 14 Mossman Mill plant availability was on budget for Week 14, however weekly throughput was below budget. The factory processed 41,911 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 315 tonnes/hour. Downtime for the week was for a scheduled maintenance day, high liquor stocks from processing difficulties at the pan stage, No. 3 Mill feeding problems and some secondary juice tank repairs. The process house remains the current restriction to crushing rate with the higher CCS levels. • Total for week: 41,911 tonnes • CCS for week: 14.34 • Total cane crushed to date: 552,689 tonnes • CCS average to date: 12.81 • 2017 crop estimate: 930,000 tonnes

TABLELAND MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 15 To date the mill has crushed 423,171 tonnes with a season to date CCS of 13.75. • Total for week: 24,058 tonnes • CCS for week: 14.93 • Total cane crushed to date: 423,171 tonnes • CCS average to date: 13.75 • 2017 crop estimate: 730,000 tonnes

industry. “Our green energy power plant will turn a 100% sugar cane fibre product known as bagasse into electricity and is our first foray into the exciting biofuels space,” Mr Cook said. “The plant is currently under construction, and will be producing 24 megawatts of electricity – enough to power 26,280 homes (Queensland Government, Powering North Queensland) – when it comes online in June next year. “Our green power plant will produce 576,000 kilowatts in a day – the same amount of electricity as 28,097 homes with solar panels. But the difference is our plant will produce this power 24 hours a day, as opposed to homes with solar panels that produce electricity for around six hours a day. “Once operational, the plant will be driven by bagasse, with a second crop called blue agave being investigated to supplement the cane to ensure reliable, 12 month operations. “Electricity will be produced on a commercial scale using agricultural products that are traditionally considered waste, leading to baseload supply

that will be reliable, efficient and carbon neutral. MSF Sugar plans to develop 4,000 hectares of farmland into agave – a new crop to Australia but grown extensively in Mexico to produce tequila – as a source of biomass material. In Mexico, agave grows in a climate similar to the dry tropic part of the Atherton Tablelands. It produces around 400 tonnes per hectare of biomass in five years, does not need irrigation, and provides a high amount of fermentable juice and fibre, the latter which would be used to support the 12 month operation of the green energy power plant. Building on its green energy power plant, MSF Sugar has launched a biorefinery project, a world first initiative that will see the company produce sugar, green baseload electricity and ethanol from one location, with all three products manufactured through the use of biomass materials grown locally on the Atherton Tablelands. The Sugar Biorefinery Project will be an enhanced sugar mill consisting of four sections – sugar mill, agave juice mill, the green power station and a distillery.

1. Spray a 9-inch square pan lightly with cooking spray. 2. Add sugar, milk and cream to melted butter; mix well. Microwave on high power for 3 minutes, stir and cook another 2 minutes. Stir well. Scrape down sides of bowl and return to microwave. Microwave 3 more minutes, stir again, then finish with another 2½ minutes in the microwave. 4. Remove from microwave, add marshmallow and stir. Add white chocolate chips and vanilla. Stir until very smooth all ingredients are well incorporated. 5. Place semi-sweet chocolate chips and food coloring in a second microwave-safe bowl. Immediately, transfer about ½ of the hot white chocolate mixture to this second bowl. Stir well with a strong handled spatula or wooden spoon until chocolate chips are completely melted and incorporated. 6. Working quickly plop scoops of each mixture in a random pattern into a prepared pan. 7. Jiggle pan to smooth surface then take a small knife, coated with a bit of butter and run the blade back and forth through the fudge to create the swirly effect. 8. Cool completely. Use foil handles to lift fudge from pan before cutting into squares.

In a highly entertaining encounter, Blue Angels started in great fashion and were leading Red Devils 24 to 15 by the half time break. Blue Angels continued to control their clash with Red Devils and at three quarter time, held a commanding 15 point lead. Although Red Devils staged a last quarter comeback, the Blue Angels held off the challenge to clinch the vital championship points. Red devils failed to restrict the scoring ability of Blue Angels. They were scoring baskets from a combination of fast breaking play and also sinking a number of three pointers. Jonah Hastie who scored 20 points and Jeremy Mackay, together with Ricaydon Wason were a constant threat throughout the fixture, with Jerome Gully also playing strongly for the winning side. The other men’s fixtures resulted in a convincing 59 to 39 win by Stingrays over Barras. While spare parts recorded a much needed win, when they overcame Ciggy Butts by 52 to 46. In the senior ladies completion, Shockers and Miakats produced a most interesting contest. An evenly contested first half saw Shockers ahead 11 to 8 at the major break. Shockers maintained their narrow advantage for the remainder of the clash, gaining victory by 28 to 18. Certainly Anna Myrteza played a significant part in the win by Shockers, scoring 13 points mainly with long outside attempts. For Miakats, Rachel Brcko scored 10 points and was their best player. While Nolene Lep rendered good support in particular after the half time interval. A closely fought junior high school encounter between Caviliers and Olympians highlighted last week round of junior fixtures. Olympians deserved their narrow 18 to 14 half time lead and even during the second stanza had every opportunity to claim victory. But important baskets by Zayd Myrteza over the concluding stages, was a telling factor in Caviliers 36 to 30 win over Olympians. Basketball fixtures now break for a couple of weeks due to school holidays – fixtures will resume on Tuesday October 2.

EXPRESS sPORT Kowanyama kids head to Karumba sport fest

The winning team heading to the Karumba Festival of Sport.

Kids from Kowanyama are attending the Karumba Festival of Sport for the first time thanks to the landmark hockey and health program Aspire to Be Deadly. A partnership between Apunipima, Kowanyama State School and Cairns Hockey saw the program roll out in Kowanyama in early August. Kids who attend school, demonstrate good behaviour and conduct in and out of the classroom and practice good health and wellbeing choices were in the

running to be selected to attend the Festival which has been running for almost 15 years. Cairns Hockey Operations Manager Julie McNeil said it was an exciting time for Kowanyama kids. “Children from Kowanyama are attending the Festival for the first time,” she said. “The Kowanyama team is playing off for fifth and sixth spot out of seven teams.” “The team has been great, represented Kowanyama proudly and shown plenty of potential.

“We are confident that through this partnership good things will be achieved for everyone.” Apunipima Health Promotion Officer Fiona Millard, who is coordinating the project, said the children who had been selected to attend were doing Kowanyama proud. “This program is teaching children about the importance of teamwork, physical activity and making healthy choices. The children have done themselves, and their amazing community proud.”

Heartbreak and ecstasy in Bulls grand finals It was a weekend of heartbreak and ecstasy for the Mareeba Bulls with two sides going down on penalties and one group totally demolishing their opposition to claim victory in the FNQ Football Grand finals held in Cairns on Saturday. On Friday night the mens 2nd division Orange side headed into the grand final against the Douglas Dragons. The Bulls lived up to all expectations, with the Mareeba side scoring an early 1-0 lead through striker Anthony Mete to take the first half lead during a first 45 minutes where neither side really took control. But the Bulls did have a couple of great chances to increase their lead and the Dragons did have a goal disallowed. In the second period, the Dragons came to life off the kick off and drew level minutes from the restart to kick start the action. The match then embed and flowed and saw the Bulls take the lead again through a Anthony Mete penalty after defender Kane Alderton was brought down in the box. As the clocked ticked

towards the end of normal time it looked as though Mareeba would hold on for the victory, but with only a one minute left on the clock, former Bulls state league player Gavin Jenkins popped up to score a header to bring the scores level and send the match into extra time. In the second half period, the Bulls again took the lead 3-2 through John Goncalves, only for the Dragons to again hit back on the stroke of the halftime break to bring the scores level and send the match to penalty shootouts, where the Bulls lost 4-2. On Saturday the action continued with the Bulls U13 side in the division A final. Cyclists riding through Mareeba’s Main Street.

Mareeba local Tony Nastasi stopped for a break at Rotary Park in town on Saturday morning on route from Cairns to Cooktown with fellow A ‘pack’ of riders crossing the Granite Creek Bridge, pack member John Heufel.

leaders were distinguishable by their “hot pink” outfits. The Mount Franklin Cardiac Challenge is an annual fundraising bike ride from Cairns to Cooktown, raising funds for cardiac services in the Far North. Since inception in 2007 by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, the

Glenys Duncombe said the work of hundreds of volunteers was integral to making the ride a success. “We have the pack leaders and escort vehicle drivers who do an outstanding job in keeping our riders safe on the road, we have SES volunteers also helping keep them safe on the road,” Ms Duncombe said.

“Police also escort the ride and manage any traffic issues and we have tremendous support from the motoring public as well,” she said. All trucking companies and tourist operators have been advised that the ride is happening. “We’re pretty sure we’re going to raise at least

$200,000 this year and every cent makes a difference,” Ms Duncombe said. “We know that patients in Far North Queensland need a second cardiac cath lab and we have a lot of community support to make it happen. These riders and their supporters have done an incredible job to help bring this project to

fruition,” she said. “The cardiac unit at Cairns Hospital have an amazing vision of health care and we are working really hard to help make it happen.” The Mount Franklin Cardiac Challenge departed Cairns on Saturday, September 16 and cyclists arrived in Cooktown on 18th.
