A local crocodile farmer has offered to become a licensed ‘croc catcher’ for the Tablelands in light of a recent spate of salt water crocodile sightings.

Juergen Arnold will not get paid for the work but says that he is happy to help as he knows that many locals blame the croc farm for the

rise in crocodiles in the region.

Currently it is illegal for anyone to touch a crocodile in the wild and in doing so they risk a hefty fine.

But at a meeting in Mareeba last week, officers from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection announced that Mr Arnold would be given training and a license to allow him to capture wild crocodiles in the area.

after local cane farm worker Daryl Bell had his hand bitten by a salt water crocodile in Mareeba on Saturday, July 15 (see The Express July 19 edition).

The news that there will now be someone locally who can come to the aid of others in a similar situation to avoid being attacked, was welcomed.

But Mr Arnold said he thinks there is some “hysteria” surround-

ing the subject and that he doesn’t believe there is more than “a handful” of crocodiles to be caught.

“The size of these crocodiles, they won’t kill anyone,” he said.

“There are no big crocs around.”

The oldest surviving member of the stolen generation lives right here in Mareeba and last Wednesday turned 106 years old.

Daisy Archer has lived a tough life after being taken from her family in Cloncurry and sent to a mission in Yarrabah south of Cairns.

“She was the senior dormitory girl,” said her son Ron Archer at her birthday party at the Mareeba Garden Settlement.

“She used to look after all the other kids that were removed from their country. She never saw her family ever again.”

After leaving the mission Daisy married and moved with her husband to Mt Mulligan 45km north west of Dimbulah where she raised eight children five boys and three girls.

Growing up without her own mum and dad in her life made parenting hard for Daisy.

“We don’t remember as a child mum ever telling us that she loved us. She didn’t like talking about her childhood. Later on she would tell me bits and pieces but I didn’t push the issue.

“But she was a beautiful mum.”

Life was hard in the mining town of Mt Mulligan.

“We weren’t allowed in town,” said Mr Archer.

“She raised us on the edge of town in a mud hut. No running water. No electricity. She had a hard life. We learnt from an early age to be independent.”

When she was 94 Ron told his mum that then Prime Minster Kevin Rudd had issued an apology to all of the stolen generation.

“She just looked at me and said ‘ it’s too bloody

late’,” said Mr Archer.

“My dad used to say to us ‘always grow up to be a free man’. We didn’t know what it meant. My dad and mum lived under the aboriginal act. My mum taught us good values. Mum has

never drunk or smoked in her life. She led by example.”

After losing touch with every single member of her family as a child, Ron and his siblings managed to track down one of her

brothers. He was 92 and was on his way to the Tablelands to be with Daisy when he was involved in a car accident. He, his wife, children and granddaughter were all killed.

At 106 Daisy is in rela-

tively good health and can recognise faces and names.

Her extended family attended her birthday celebrations on Wednesday, July 19 including great great grandson Cooper Bell who turned 13 on the same

day.

Member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church sang songs and read prayers as Daisy was a member.

Staff from the aged care centre said Daisy was “loved by all residents.”

Kuranda residents feel ignored by councillors

A group of Kuranda residents are angry with Mareeba Shire Councillors for allowing an application for up to 240 rural residential lots to be approved.

Councillors debated at last week’s monthly meeting to approve requests to “assess and decide” a proposed development application made by the same company behind the KURWorld resort.

But members of the Kuranda community say despite being given four weeks grace to make a decision, councillors took just nine minutes to agree to approve the request, which will be judged under an old

planning scheme.

“This is the biggest subdivision in Kuranda’s history and they took just nine minutes to approve it with no public discussion,” said Steven Nowakowski.

“We don’t think Kuranda has the public services to support this and the 2004 planning scheme only approved the Myola precinct if the Kuranda Range was going to be upgraded into a four lane highway.

“Kuranda isn’t the place for urban development.”

Mr Nowakowski said that home owners neighbouring the land are “ropeable” having believed they were purchasing properties in an area that was zoned rural, only to now find out they could be living on the

edge of a housing estate.

But the developers – who lodged the application with a few days to spare at the end of the last financial year – have operated within legal boundaries.

The 2004 planning scheme which zoned the property ‘rural-residential’ was still active until June 30 2017.

It is now zoned ‘rural’.

Mr Nowakowski said the council could have overruled the legalities and says the problem is that none of the Shire councillors are supportive of Kuranda residents.

‘Legally it was up to the discretion of the Council to say no,” said Mr Nowakowski.

“A major issue is that we have no representa-

tion here. We don’t have a councillor from this area.”

The application lodgement came as a surprise to locals who believed the land was going to be developed into the proposed ‘integrated eco-resort and innovation hub’ known as KUR-World. Mr Nowakowski said their latest application is a ‘Plan B’ if the resort does not get fully approved for development.

“We are all for an eco-resort,” said Mr Nowakowski.

“Kuranda needs more accommodation. But we don’t want an 18 hole golf course, or housing, or some of the other planned elements.

“A world-class eco-resort would be great. But

this is not an eco-resort. It’s just clever branding.”

The residents have written to Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks to ask for a “written statement of reasons” for the decision made by councillors last week.

He says he heard rumours about some crocodiles escaping when it was under previous ownership.

“Many people blame the croc farm that the crocs that are around here have escaped,” said Mr Arnold.

“I can’t tell you what happened here before, but in the last two and half years no crocs have escaped from here.”

Mr Arnold said he now feels obliged to help.

“It’s additional work for us,” he said.

“There are no benefits for us. But I am doing it more or less to help out the neighbours because they are quite scared.”

“We put traps in, wait for them to go in. We stun them and bring them to their new home. It’s not so spectacular.”

The caught crocodiles are then mostly useless to Mr Arnold and his business.

Only the best skins make the grade and crocodiles from the wild whose skins are likely scarred and damaged, will never be purchased by his clients.

Additionally they are not ideal as breeding stock either.

“If we get a 4m male or 3m female, that is useful for us because we can use them as breeders, but unfortunately most of the problem crocodiles are about 2m plus because these are the ones that are looking for new territories and so they spread out,” Mr Arnold said.

“These crocodiles are more or less useless to us because a 2m male you need to feed for another 10

years before it becomes a breeder.”

The unlikely crocodile hunter said 10 years ago he would never have believed he would end up in Far North Queensland working with crocodiles. Originally from Germany, he currently has 3000 crocodiles at the property and is expanding the operation to have 10,000 by 2020.

Previously the owner of a computer business, his company had property interests in the region when he heard that the crocodile farm was up for sale.

Since then he has educated himself extensively on the salt water crocodile habitat and has his own theories on where they are coming from.

“I have heard there is a breeding population at Quaids dam and the dam has a connection to the Mitchell River which is crocodile habitat,” he said.

“So I spoke to a couple

Work started on Hann Hwy Works officially kicked off last week on the $53.32 million Kennedy Developmental Road (Hann Highway) upgrades between Mount Garnet and Hughenden, with the project set to deliver a more reliable freight and tourist route for North Queensland along with jobs in local communities.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the upgrades, which included sealing and widening works, were vital for economic development in the region.

“This is one of the key projects being delivered through the Australian Government’s $600 million Northern Australia Roads Programme, which

will improve safety and efficiency for all users, particularly heavy vehicles,” Mr Chester said.

“These works are also going to be important to local communities, with Flinders and Etheridge Shire Councils carrying out some of the works, which have indigenous employment and procurement targets.”

Queensland Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said 42.15km of Kennedy Developmental Road would be sealed between The Lynd and Hughenden and 3.4km would be widened between Mount Garnet and The Lynd.

“This upgrade to the Hann Highway will improve travel times and road safety.

Novel sequel to murder tale Dave Wright with his two books Blood Gold Revenge and Bush Redemption.

A book that was based on the story of murdered Mareeba man Bruce Schuler has been the catalyst for an unlikely writing career.

Dave Wright has just released his second book – a sequel to ‘Blood Gold Revenge’ called ‘Bush Redemption’.

The self-employed local surprised himself when he decided to write his first book, but he had a story that he felt needed to be told.

A gold prospector in his spare time, Bruce Schuler was well known to Mr Wright and they had met once through a mutual friend.

“He was a lovely bloke,” said Mr Wright.

“I was supposed to be there with him that day when he got shot but I had

to work.”

Instead Mr Wright’s prospecting partner was witness to the shooting and a key reason why Cape York couple Stephen Struber and Dianne Wilson were convicted of his murder in 2012.

Mr Wright followed the case closely and had his own ideas about why and how it happened.

He decided to put pen to paper and wrote a fictional book based closely on the facts of Bruce’s murder. A huge feat considering he “doesn’t even read books” himself.

“I thought it would make a great movie,” said Mr Wright who was raised in the outback.

A unique Australian action-thriller – Blood Gold Revenge is a fictional adventure story set against the harsh, but incredible

outback of north Queensland and the secrets that lie deep in the unknown.

Now Bush Redemption picks up where it left off taking readers on another thrilling adventure in the outback after the Hatchet River Station massacre.

Drug lords, Chinese mafia, hitmen, bikie gangs and even an insurance salesman are all part of the plot.

It’s not hard to see it will be another big hit with one reviewer claiming it “makes Wolf Creek look like a bedtime story.”

“The first one was daunting because I had never done anything like that before,” said Mr Wright.

“I enjoyed writing this one a lot more. The first one was hard to separate fact from fiction and I had to go to a defamation lawyer because they hadn’t

gone to trial yet.”

Now Mr Wright is a supporter of Bruce Schuler’s wife Fiona who is campaigning for a ‘no body, no parole’ law to force killers to tell where their victims have been left.

“My book is dedicated to all who have missing family members in the Australian outback and I hope the answers become apparent for closure or justice,” Mr Wright said previously of Blood Gold Revenge.

“I am a big supporter of the ‘no body, no parole’ law – there would be nothing worse than not knowing where your loved one lies.”

On Tuesday July 11 Katelyn Dickinson was presented with the TJ Ryan Medal which is awarded to the top 10 students in Queensland each year.

The awards take into account academic success, leadership, community involvement, cultural and sporting pursuits.

The judges are looking for outstanding success across the board and only exceptional students will be recognised with a TJ Ryan Medal – the medal includes a $10,000 scholarship. Schools can only nominate one student for this opportunity and it is open to public and private

schools.

This is the second consecutive year that Mareeba SHS has had a student recognised in this manner, with Carla Newlands being awarded a medal last year.

The last time a school achieved this was in 200910 (Kirwan SHS and Anglican Grammar School).

Mayor Tom Gilmore and councillors Angela Toppin and Lenore Wyatt both attended the school to award Katelyn with her Medal and certificate.

MSHS said they were proud that they had nurtured two such students by providing them with quality teaching.

Premier responds to Mareeba’s croc issues

The Palaszczuk Government has responded to the Mareeba community’s concerns about crocodile safety by changing the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan (QCMP) to allow the targeting of all crocodiles for removal within certain Mareeba Shire Council areas.

Environment Minister Steven Miles said changes were made to the QCMP zoning maps following meetings with local mayors, including the Mayor of Mareeba Shire Council Cr Tom Gilmore.

“In response to concerns raised by Mareeba

Shire Council, a new zoning (Zone F – atypical habitat zone) was applied to an area of Two Mile Creek near Mareeba on June 26 2017,” Mr Miles said.

Mr Miles said in accordance with the revised QCMP, any saltwater crocodiles reported in the Two Mile Creek area would be targeted for removal once their presence was confirmed.

“EHP officers would respond to any crocodile sighting reported in this zone by inspecting the area as soon as practicable to confirm the presence of the animal and to target the

animal for removal once their presence has been confirmed,” he said.

“The rest of the Mareeba Shire will remain part of Zone E, a General Management Zone, in which any crocodile displaying dangerous behaviour will be targeted for removal.

Mayor Tom Gilmore thanked Minister Miles for changing the QCMP. “This change to the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan will help keep the local community safe,” Mr Gilmore said.

“I encourage the community to report sightings of any crocodiles to EHP.”

Mindblowing 240 metre wind towers

Lakeland will soon become the Far Northern hub for green power following three years of wind studies carried out by a Canberra company which is proposing to erect 35 towers up to 240 metres high near the township.

Already 40 hectares of solar panels this month will come online supplying 13 megawatts of electricity to the grid from the recently completed Lakeland Solar and Storage facility.

On Wednesday proponents of the $200 million wind farm project, Windlab Australia, met with Lakeland residents to gain support for the massive

project.

At the meeting company representative Joshua Petrass told 30 residents and farmers that if their applications received government approval, construction would start in 2018.

The company was offering annual community grants of $10,000 for local residents and more than 100 jobs during construction.

Not all those at the meeting were in favour of the wind farm, in particular those land owners living two or more kilometres from the nearest tower.

Long-time Lakeland grazier Joy Marriott told the meeting she had nearly completed construction of a caravan park on her prop-

erty.

She said the nearest tower would be 2km from the site and while the wind was blowing and the blades were turning, the ambient noise associated with all wind turbines would have a detrimental effect on her and her family, park visitors and domestic animals.

“Why don’t you build them up on the ranges, instead of building 240 metre towers next to people’s properties?” Ms Marriott asked spokesman Josh Petrass.

In reply he claimed the wind studies showed the best location was on the flatter areas about six kilometres north-west of the town.

Not all those present

were convinced the company has chosen the best location.

Town resident Beth Bennett said the towers should be built on top of the range and not near the town or private properties.

“We don’t want these structures near the town,” Ms Bennett said.

“We will soon be surrounded by the next stage of the solar panels.”

Farmer Annette Marriott spoke in favour of the project saying it would be a great boost for the community.

“Quite frankly this is an insult to local people to put up with these monstrous towers blotting the landscape near their properties,” he said.

“They should have 15 per cent of the voting power. Pending the debt to equity ratio of the project 1.5 per cent could make these shares worthless.

“It seems this company already has finance and most approvals in place and this meeting is only window dressing for the company image.”

Mr Petrass said another meeting to update residents would be held with a date to be announced.

Mareeba on water restrictions Due to the low levels of water in Tinaroo Dam at present, Mareeba Shire residents will have their water restricted from August 1.

The ruling was passed at last Wednesday’s (July 19) Council meeting where Mayor Tom Gilmore and

councillors agreed that irrigation use should be limited between the hours of 6pm and 8am – a Level 1 stage.

Currently, Tinaroo is sitting at 49.58 per cent and farmers’ water allocation has been reduced to 60 per

All ratepayers connected to the Council’s water supply will be part of the restrictions however hand held hoses may be used at any time. Mayor Tom Gilmore said Council is being proactive.

“Council moved in recognition of the fact we live in a robust agricultural economy; we are entirely dependent upon water from Tinaroo,” said Cr Gilmore.

“Domestic water supply for Mareeba, Dimbulah and Kuranda are all drawn

from Tinaroo and Council agreed today that we should, in recognition of the fact that Tinaroo is less than 50 per cent and we are entering an irrigation year, that we will introduce Level 1 water restrictions for domestic use.”

HASTIE ROAD, MAREEBA: The upgrade to the sewer network capacity at Hastie Road, Mareeba has commenced. This upgrade will provide wastewater services enabling future residential and commercial development and meet demands for housing whilst mitigating the risk of environmental impacts.

BUSHY CREEK BRIDGE - MT LEWIS ROAD: The load limit at Bushy Creek Bridge was reduced to three tonne earlier this year. Timber restoration works were completed last month to restore the bridge to a satisfactory condition.

Huge honour for war heroes

Two Mareeba men have been bestowed the highest honour merit that a country can give for civil and military for their service at the D-Day/Normandy landings during World War II. Leslie Eric Emmerson and Gordon Victor F Powell were given their medals - the Chevalier de la Ordre de Legion Honneur - at an official ceremony at the

Mareeba Shire Council offices on Wednesday, July 19.

Mayor Tom Gilmore read a letter from the French Republic that read “our military involvement we must never forget”.

Mr Powell, who celebrated his 93rd birthday on the day of the ceremony, was a British Royal Navy gunner. Mr Emmerson, 92, was in the British Army.

Both men signed up for the services on their 18th birth-

days and were sent off to war shortly after.

A year later both men took part in the largest seaborne invasion in history - the Normandy landings, often termed ‘D-Day’ which occurred on June 6, 1944. The operation began the liberation of Germanoccupied northwestern Europe from Nazi control and contributed to the victory on the Western Front.

In 2014 the French Republic created this medal

to honour surviving allied veterans of this event.

“It’s a great shame you haven’t been able to wear them for the last 70 years but it’s never too late,” said Mayor Tom Gilmore, who was charged with handing the men their medals.

“With deepest gratitude I have the honour of presenting these.

“This is a very humbling experience. Thank you very much for your service.”

Christmas in July heats up This weekend Christmas in July gets underway at Davies Park, Mareeba.

Christmas in July celebrations which run for four days.

Hosted by the Far North Nomads Chapter of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia and supported by Mareeba Shire Council, the event is well attended each year.

event is always anticipated by many and has grown to be one of the Shire’s most significant events.

“Not only do we have the opportunity to showcase our beautiful part of the world, we can sometimes take for granted, we also welcome the economic benefits, with an increase in trade for many business-

es and tourist attractions across the Shire,” said Cr Gilmore.

On Saturday, there will be a Christmas in July dinner, catered by the Mareeba Leagues Club, followed by an open day on Sunday from 9am to 3pm. The gold coin entry is divided between the Mareeba SES and the Christmas Appeal.

PENSIONER REBATE ON RATES All pensioners who own their principal place of residence within the Tablelands Regional Council area and who are not currently receiving a rate subsidy from the State Government, can apply now for a rebate on rates for 2017/18.

To qualify you must have a current Queensland Pensioner Concession Card or a Repatriation Health Care Card for all conditions (Gold Card) issued by Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

An application for State Government and Council rebate on rates is available online or from a Customer Service Centre. It must be lodged at Council by 31 July 2017 for a discount off your next rate notice. A copy of the relevant pension card is required to be presented with the application.

The State’s motoring body has expressed serious concern at the skyrocketing number of motorcycle deaths on Queensland roads this year.

Motorcycle deaths made up 27 percent of the current road toll, an increase of 12 percent compared to the same time last year. RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said it was a concerning trend.

“Even one death on our roads is too many, but to have 28 motorcyclists killed in crashes in just over five months is shocking,” Mr Spalding said.

“We need to start questioning why there’s been a reduction in driver fatalities, but an ongoing upward trend in fatalities and serious crashes involving motorbike riders.”

Mr Spalding said RACQ urged riders to take their safety seriously.

“Motorcyclists are some of our most vulnerable road users. They don’t have the same physical protection as motorists, and will always come off second best in a crash with a car,” he said.

“This means motorcyclists need to think about how they can best protect themselves on the roads. This includes wearing quality safety gear, making sure they’re visible to all road users, and are riding to the conditions.”

Mr Spalding said drivers also needed to play their part in keeping motorcyclists safe.

“We need motorists to think about what they can do to help reduce the number of motorcycle fatalities. It’s about giving space to motorcyclists, checking your blind spots, particularly when changing lanes – a sideswipe into a motorcycle can have deadly consequences for the rider.”

The RACQ has revealed Queensland’s cheapest and most expensive vehicles to own and run, with

the dearest car costing owners more than $25,000 per year to keep on the road.

The 2017 Vehicle Running Costs survey examined a record 137 popular vehicles across 20 categories – taking into account all expenses associated with normal car ownership including purchase price, interest, fuel, new tyres, servicing, insurance and depreciation.

At just over $5000 per year, the micro Suzuki Celerio was again named the cheapest car to own and operate in Queensland – the electric Tesla Model X 75D was the most expensive vehicle to run at $25,141 per annum.

Spalding said the report highlighted savings of thousands of dollars each year if motorists downsized their vehicles.

“Motorists can save a lot by making informed choices about what they’re actually getting for their money when buying a car,” Mr Spalding said. “If you swap a large vehicle for a small car, you’ll have around an extra $100 a week in your pocket. Similar savings can be made by opting for a car with lower ownership costs.”

Mr Spalding said registration and fuel costs had some of the biggest increases in the last year.

“Unfortunately Queensland is one of the most expensive places in Aus-

tralia to register a vehicle – a four-cylinder car registration costing $717 each year,” he said. “The cost of unleaded petrol has also gone up nearly eight cents per litre on average since the same time last year making fuel one of the major contributors to operating costs.”

Mr Spalding said depreciation was still the major cost associated with vehicle ownership. “Vehicle depreciation is a huge contributor, but because motorists don’t lose any money out of their pockets on a regular basis, drivers often forget about it until they go to sell their car.”

Queenslanders driven crazy by tailgaters Tailgaters are Queensland’s most frustrating drivers, according to the results of RACQ’s latest ‘What Drives You Crazy?’ survey.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the annual research asked members to rate the most annoying driver habits, with motorists following too closely regarded the number one pet peeve.

“For the second consecutive year, tailgating has

topped the list as Queensland’s most irritating driver behaviour,” Ms Ritchie said.

“We’re taught to leave at least two seconds between vehicles not just out of courtesy but because travelling too close increases the risk of crashing if the car in front stops suddenly.”

Other annoying behaviours highlighted in the survey included motorists who failed to indicate

correctly, increased speed when being overtaken, and those who used a mobile phone behind the wheel.

Ms Ritchie said the results emphasised the need for greater road rule enforcement by police.

“Some of the behaviours on this list may appear to be minor traffic infringements, but anything that increases frustrations can escalate the risk of crashes on the roads.”

Motorists who increase their speed when you try to overtake them 4. Motorists talking/sending text messages on hand-held mobile phones 5. Speeding in school zones is no accident Drivers have been put on notice for Term 3 of the schooling year, after an alarming number of drivers surveyed admitted to ‘accidentally’ speeding in a school zone.

More than 43 percent of motorists have admitted to unintentionally going over the limit in a 40km/h zone.

RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said ignorance or inattention were not valid excuses for breaking the rules.

“Speeding is no accident and the consequences of not keeping an eye on your speedometer

can be catastrophic,” Ms Ritchie said.

“School zone times are standardised in Queensland to help motorists remember when to slow down. The standard operating times for school zones in Queensland are 7–9am and 2–4pm, but drivers should be aware some schools have minor exceptions.”

Ms Ritchie said school zones were high-risk areas and urged drivers to expect the unexpected.

“When your eyes are off the road for just two seconds, a vehicle moving at 40km/h travels more

than 22 metres, that’s more than the length of a cricket pitch,” she said.

“It takes years for children to learn about spatial awareness and how to safely interact with traffic, so it’s our role as drivers to keep an extra eye out around school zones, especially during drop off and pick up times.

“Kids should be able to travel to and from school safely. The speed limit is there to protect everyone and we urge motorists to drive with due care and attention in these areas.”

Here are the facts.

Tree removal – An assessment of the Malanda Showgrounds trees was undertaken two years ago

which recommended their removal due to wood rot.

Images are available to support the fact that they posed a risk to life and property due to their deteriorated state. Prior to removal, consultation occurred with impacted stakeholders. Replacement native trees will be planted.

Where trees cause a safety risk, based on assessment by a qualified arborist, we will remove and replant as necessary.

Paying for water – Water access and usage charges are based on the cost of providing treated water that meets Australian Drinking Water Quality guidelines.

For 2017-2018, water will cost 57.5 cents per kilolitre.

pect to pay for water usage if not by the people who use it? The average cost for a litre of bottled water in Australia is $2.75, so 57.5 cents for 1000 litres is a relatively low cost to pay for this service. Tips for reducing water consumption are available online.

Rate increase – Rates, along with other costs generally increase annually..

With over $700 million in community assets to maintain, rates are adjusted annually to deliver upgrades and services. Currently rates and utility charges contribute 73% towards Council’s operating income.

We are becoming an enterprising Council, seeking alternative revenue sources

to reduce the reliance on ratepayers to fund core services. The average overall rates and charges increase for 2017-2018 is 4.04% not 4.4%.

Selling land under market value – Selling Council assets is done through a confidential tender process where people indicate a price they are willing to pay for an asset. Council considers all responses and takes into account market value prior to awarding a tender. Tender TTRC-2017-01 for sale of land on Railway Avenue, Atherton is the land that Mr Curtis refers to. Due to no suitable responses being received, that tender has subsequently been withdrawn and has not been awarded.

Council remains the owner of the land.

Empty shops in town centres – A 2016 retail analysis identified the total vacant retail floorspace across the entire Tablelands as 7.9%, with less than 5% in Atherton vacant. Landlords play a large role in determining what tenants move into vacant premises.

We will continue to promote the Tablelands as an attractive investment opportunity.

Development – From 1 July 2016 until 30 June 2017, Council processed $48.5M worth of building approvals and 64 development applications. We have advocated for an Allied Health and Medical Services Precinct in ad-

dition to upgrades to the Atherton Hospital, built a new Wastewater Treatment Plant at Tinaroo, commenced a new Wastewater Treatment Plant at Ravenshoe and will construct new water supply infrastructure for Herberton this year.

We will develop Priors Creek as a recreational, cultural and tourist hub, have negotiated for the region to be a core location for the FNQ Regional Innovation program, and are preparing a study into multi-use water options for the Upper Herbert for potential development and investment. I believe construction, new development, planning for future growth and innovation in our region is thriving.

Council foresight – Our Corporate Plan 2017-2021 places an emphasis on economic development and growth. We will be doing everything in our power to attract investment, increase the regions workforce capabilities and entice more people to live here. Supporting vibrant, diverse and inclusive communities, using technologies to our advantage and planning towards a prosperous and sustainable Council over the long-term are priorities.

Big win for Isobel Agriculture shines bright at awards Congratulations Isobel Johnson, Mareeba High School and TGT Agriculture – winners of the Far North Queensland School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeship for 2017.

Held on Friday July 14, the Far North Queensland Training Awards for the Department of Education was a huge gala evening event where Agriculture took its place as the standout winners in training.

The hype around agriculture was huge and Isobel Johnson of Mareeba State High School took out the top award of School based Apprenticeship/ Traineeship for 2017. She was in the top three finalists up against electrical and hairdressing students.

Isobel is studying a Certificate 3 in Agriculture, with the core focus on agronomy, in partnership with TGT Agriculture based at their Mareeba branch.

Her training provider is the Australian College

of Agriculture and Horticulture and this certificate is the creation of many months of work by Leanne Kruss, FNQ Agricultural Workforce Manager, creating an agricultural stakeholder suite of initiatives as a pilot model for pathways and careers in agriculture.

TGT has several school based certificates throughout their branches across the north, plus also create work experience both school and post school and are investigating university internships to attract local students back to the region.

This is such a great win for Isobel, TGT, Mareeba High School, the QAWN advisor and the whole of the agricultural industry, especially here in the north where it is the backbone of our economically thriving community.

SUGAR REPORTS MOSSMAN MILL CRUSHING STATISTICS WEEK 6 Mossman Mill plant availability was below budget for Week 6 but above the budgeted throughput for the week. The factory processed 44,167 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 325 tonnes/hour.

The major down time during the week was due to the scheduled maintenance day mid-week and some wet weather cane supply interruptions late in the week.

Inside the factory, the milling train control issues are more in control reducing downtime and the factory responded well to a chemical clean of the effets allowing for a step change in the crushing rate.

10th Dan Grand Master visits Mareeba

Grand Master Kyu Sik Shin, one of the top ranking martial artists in the world, visited the Tablelands at the weekend to further the training of the Tang Soo Do Moo Rim Kwan students of FNQ. 30 Tang Soo Do students attended the grading on Saturday which was attended and instructed by Grand Master Shin at the Mareeba Dojang in Constance Street.

The students went through a Tai Chi style warm up, known as the Yu Yun Gong with the Grand Master before demonstrating basic techniques, yongs, sparring and breaking techniques.

The evening ended

Grand Master Kyu Sik Shin put the students through their paces on Saturday,

with a BBQ at the club and lots of friendly smiles.

Local Tang Soo Do instructor, Robert McAlpine, who runs clubs in Speewah, Mareeba and Atherton has invited Grand Master Shin to visit the area to further not only his own martial arts training but also for his students.

Tang Soo Do is a Korean traditional martial art made famous in the west through Chuck Norris, who was one of the first American Black Belt of Tang Soo Do and one of the first to teach it in the west.

Being 81 years of age Grand Master Shin holds a wealth of experience

and knowledge not only in martial arts but also in Oriental Healing.

Grand Master Shin is also known Internationally as a healer and has tremendous success with the art of Korean Hand Acupuncture and Moxibustion.

Grand Master Shin has incorporated the inclusion of learning healing techniques as a special feature of the Tang Soo Do Moo Rim Kwan martial arts clubs and also held a special seminar which was open to the public on the 5 Elements. The 5 Elements is a natural system of acquiring and maintaining a healthy balance in life.

Roosters come back to claim 40-30 win

Roosters under 19 half Ty Grogan grabbed three tries on Saturday.

A strong second half has set up a come from behind 40-30 win for the Atherton Roosters over Kangaroos in Saturday nights Cairns District Rugby League match played at Roosters Stadium.

The Roosters went to the break down 24-10 and did well in their second stanza recovery to deliver a further 30 points in their victory.

Kangaroos still led the contest 30-26 at the 65th minute before three tries in the final ten minutes gave the Roosters their seven tries to five victory.

with three tries while forward Clinton Lilo had another outstanding game.

The Roosters under 19 side were also celebrating after their comfortable 32-8 win over a highly fancied Kangaroos side which keeps the young Roosters in the finals mix.

Roosters half Ty Grogan was again at his best crossing for three four pointers in the six tries to two win.

Roosters won the reserve grade on a forfeit.

This Saturday the Atherton Roosters host Yarrabah at Roosters Stadium.

Gearing up for Fun Run and Walk Locals are counting down the days for the annual Mareeba Rotary Bendigo Bank ‘Fun Run and Walk’, being held in Mareeba at the Bicentennial Lakes on Sunday August 6, 2017.

Now in its second year, the event run by Mareeba Rotary attracted more than 120 participants in its first year.

“We were totally blown away with the amount of people who entered last year,” said Mareeba Rotary President Matt Jacob.

“We wanted to create a family friendly fitness event that took advantage

of one of our town’s greatest assets – the Bicentennial Lakes – and from the response received last year, it was obvious it was something the locals wanted too.

This year the fun run and walk will take on a new route which has eliminated the need for road crossings and takes in more of the Lakes area and Granite Creek trail.

“So much work is happening to revitalise the Lakes and we really want to showcase this to the wider community, so this year’s course will focus on the main Lakes area.

With a focus on health, fitness and fun, some small businesses will also be there on the day to showcase their products and services.

“There will also be local businesses on display with valuable information stands, plus there will be food and coffee and more, all with an aim to promote a healthy lifestyle within the community.

From experienced runners to first timers – everyone is welcome.

All funds raised from the event will benefit the Mareeba Friends of the

Bulls finals hopes slip away after 2-1 defeat

Indoor archery championships Archers from across the Far North converged on Mareeba at the weekend for the National and State Indoor Archery Championships.

The Tableland Company of Archers hosted the event which sees local scores submitted to Archery Australia for a national ranking.

It’s an annual event and as the sport has increased in popularity locally, so has the amount of competitors taking part in the championships which has double the participants it had last year.

Competitors are split into different age groups – Cadet, Veteran, Masters and Open. The championships saw 14 archers ranging in age from eight to adults.

The Mareeba Bulls season is hanging on a tight rope after going down 2-1 away to the Southside Comets at Endeavour Park last Thursday night in a catch up game from round thirteen.

The Bulls headed into the match knowing all three points were a must and started well, but then were dealt a set back when a deflected free kick bounced of the wall and wrong footing keeper Adrian Vedelago to give the Comets a 1-0 inside the opening five minutes.

But the Bulls recovered and were the better team for majority of the first half and were rewarded when Steven Cater scored a spectacular bicycle kick to draw level in the 34th minute sending both teams into the sheds 1-1 at halftime.

As the second half resumed the Bulls came out where they left off and enjoyed majority of the possession and had several close opportunities with the Comets defence and goal keeper keeping the Bulls at bay, but then with just about their only chance inside the opening 20 minutes of first half, the Comets broke away and defender Zane Singleton who otherwise had another outstanding game brought down a Southside striker in the box to give the homeside the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot and did so to take a 2-1

lead in the 62nd minute.

For the last half hour the Bulls threw everything forward and spent most of the time pining the Comets defence back but could not find a break through going down 2-1 to place their finals aspiration on a knife’s edge.

The Bulls reserves enjoyed a great 5-0 win.

With up to seven players unavailable, veteran’s Josh Ruiz, Dennis Allen and Jamie Wilesmith came in with youngster Liam Leporati, Ivan Jensen and Leon Perosinni stepping up with Leporti netting a hatrick for the away side.

Coach Marcello Savaglio also gave reserve grade debut’s to youngsters Giovan Spena and Rhys Pozzebon in what was a outstanding win and great to see the youngsters stepping up and getting some taste of the reserves grade competition.

The ladies also played last Wednesday night, and after a tight opening 30 minutes the Comets scored three goals in five minutes to shock the Bulls and ultimately run away with a 4-0 win.

This weekend the Bulls travel down to take on the Edge Hill Tigers on Saturday night. The Bulls second division Orange team have the bye, while the 2nd division Black will travel up to Atherton to take on the Eagles on Friday night.
