People and community unite

DURING these unprecedented times, locals have been asking how they can reach out and help people who are currently struggling through the COVID-19 crisis. Seven years ago, Bree Hargreaves, President of the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce started the ‘My Tablelands’ Facebook page as a way of locals connecting with local businesses. Due to her connections, Bree had been fielding calls about how locals can help other locals, “People were asking me

things like how do I buy meals for people? how do I find out who is in need? and who do I call if I need help?” Recently Bree launched another Facebook Group “Tablelands Unite – helping each other through COVID-19” Bree started making enquiries about how to get essentials to members of the community, and who those people were. That’s when she noticed there were some broken links in the communication chain. So last week Bree started the Tablelands Unite webpage as a

way of collecting details so that she can help direct people in the right direction, “I wanted a space to connect Tablelanders in a time when we soon wouldn’t be able to ‘catch up over a coffee.” she said “And to continue with my #ShopTablelands promotions, my small part to contribute to our business community.” Just 5 days after starting the group Bree had over 2915 members including over 100 people asking for help. “The growth was absolutely amazing, more than I could ever

have imagined. People asking for help, offering help, and sharing information and local business information.“ It’s for anyone on the Tablelands from Mount Garnet out to Julatten and everywhere in between. Startup Tablelands and the Atherton Chamber of Commerce have also come on board to help. When you sign up at www. tablelandsunite.com.au – you will be asked either: I want to help or I need help. This way Bree can help connect those in

need with those able to give. “I don’t see problems, just opportunities that need solutions. I put together a very basic website that started collecting contact details of people who are willing to help.” Bree said “Either admin support or drop and run deliveries. We’ve even had a volunteer offer to go and feed pets of people that may be in a hospital, “It’s an army of volunteers that can be called on when things get real. I don’t have the resources (or funding) to make this happen myself and am hop-

ing to connect with a group that may already have the other piece of the puzzle – the people that aren’t on Facebook that need help.” To help, join or register go to www.tablelandsunite.com.au. You can also keep up to date at www.facebook.com/groups/tablelandsunite The power of small communities always shines in disastrous times and while COVID-19 is the worst that we as a community and country have ever experiened, out local communtities continue to shine.

WITH the Prime Minister’s announcement last week that all licensed premises would need to close to try and stop the spread of COVID-19, one Mareeba business has been hit harder than most. Last week Mareeba Leagues Club had to let go of nearly 30 staff, some of them long term, as the government's lockdown measures came into effect. Lucy Connor, Chief Executive Officer of Mareeba Leagues Club, said the short notice caught the club by surprise. “We had less than 24 hours’ notice before we had to close and that was a big shock to us, our members and our staff,” she said Even though the club could have tried to continue trading with a takeaway menu, the club decided against it, so that they didn’t impact other local food businesses. “We decided not to continue doing takeaway meals so that other small businesses in town, who only have food as their core business could continue to trade. “Takeaway food is their core business and we didn’t want to impact them” “We plan to re-open as soon as we are allowed to do so, we would like to be reopened within the next six months.” Mrs Connor says the support from the community has been unbelievable.

Mareeba Leagues Club has closed its doors in line with social distancing measures set by the government.

“Our club is a meeting place, it’s a supportive environment for a lot of people, its something a lot of people in the community looked forward to,” she said “To have all of that cut off from the community so drastically is a really big adjustment. “We are constantly getting calls from members from the community saying we are missing you, we are thinking of you, what’s happening with the staff? “We would like to thank members of the community who extended their support and the most difficult part has been the impact on our staff. As we had

less than 24 hours notices, it was a huge impact. “We are not alone in this situation and unfortunately most of our staff can’t work from home. We hope to have our staff back as soon as we are permitted to do so.” The closure of the club has also had a ripple effect across the wider community as the club has had to cancel orders with local suppliers. “A lot of our local suppliers have had their income cut off with next to no notice,” “We buy from local butchers, bakers, seafood suppliers, we have always had the policy of

buying from locals, so this is going to be devastating for them.” The board of directors at the Leagues Club said that staff were their first priority when news of the closures came through last week. In continuing their support of the community the club donated a hefty stock of fresh fruit and vegetables to Mareeba Meals on Wheels. Rather than let all the useful produce go to waste in these trying times the Mareeba Leagues Club decided instead to donate it where it could be fully used.

Pupil free week for schools ahead of Easter break QUEENSLAND schools moved to pupil free days as of Monday so teachers can prepare to teach remotely, although anyone with a job is still able to send their children to school for the remainder of this week. “Queensland schools will move to student free days and schools will remain open to allow children of essential workers and vulnerable children to remain at school,” The Queensland Premier Ms Palaszczuk said last week. The ruling applies to all schools, not just state schools. Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace said “Schools are open for essential workers and workers required in the workplace,” Ms Grace said. “It’s important for teachers to be given the time to plan for what may be needed in the future.” Principal of Mareeba State High school Scott Whybird said teachers would still be at school. “We now have five student-

free days allocated, teachers will be working on how we can provide school work to people who won’t be coming to school,” he said. “The school is still open to families of essential workers and vulnerable children. “At the moment if kids can stay at home, they probably should as that would be the best situation. “If parents do need to send their children to school, there won’t be any classes, teachers will be providing more of a supervisory role. “Staff at Mareeba State High School will be working on ways to ensure students will be engaged in learning during term two in this uncertain time. “We will also continue to update you around any changes to processes through Parent Net and Facebook. The current situation is schools will be opening at the end of the school holidays, on April 20.”

Mareeba State High School Principal Scott Whybird.

Health Minister Steven Miles said the state could have lost up to 30 per cent of its health staff if schools had completely closed. “It’s incredibly important that our health staff continue to be able to send their children to school,” he said. Packs of schoolwork are already available to parents and

students in line with the national curriculum for each year level and answers available for parents to help them with their child’s learning. For students not attending school, resources will continue to be updated at www.education. qld.gov.au/curriculum/learningat-home

New level of restrictions

PRIME Minister Scott Morrison has announced a new range of measures aimed at halting the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus). The measures announced on Sunday night include: • A two-person limit to gatherings in public. Previously the maximum gathering size was 10 people, excluding family members. • Outside gyms and skateparks are now to be closed. • Public playgrounds will also be closed, but not the entire park. • Bootcamps will also be re-

duced to two people. • There’s also a moratorium on evictions from rental properties for people who are facing financial distress. The PM also added that everyone must now stay home except for: • Shopping for essential needs, which must be kept short and not too frequent • Going to work or school that cannot be done remotely • Seeking medical services or compassionate grounds • Exercising with no more than one other person • Weddings are to remain at five

people and funerals at 10 people. The Prime Minister said shopping was still allowed but only for short periods of time. “When you are going out for shopping, you should be going for just stuff you need and do it and get home,” he said. Mr Morrison also recommended that all people over the age of 70, people with a chronic illness aged 60 or over, and indigenous Australians older than 50 should stay home. The PM said the measures were was not compulsory, but ones that he strongly recom-

mended. The news comes after Queensland Health confirmed that Queensland has 31 new confirmed cases of novel COVID-19 raising the state total to 656. As of Monday, March 30 at 6am, there was 4,093 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia, with an increase of 284 new cases. The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) now has 21 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Queensland Health combines the number for Cairns and the Tablelands into one area,

something that Member for Hill Shane Knuth is not happy with. “Thank you all for bringing to my attention the need for the public to be informed on the location of cases in the Far North,” said Mr Knuth. “I have raised the communities concerns with CHHHS in regards to the location of cases and I believe there will be a decision made in the very near future.” The Australian Government has released a Coronavirus App that everyone is encouraged to download to stay up to date. Employment opportunites across the region

WITH redundancies being announced every day, hundreds of thousands of jobs are being lost around Australia. As queues outside Centrelink offices stretch around the block, some industries are actually looking for staff. Bree Hargreaves, President of the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce says it hurts the entire region when staff are let go. “It pains us to see our local businesses having to let go of their team, and/or closing their doors due to the current COVID-19 situation,” she said. Financial help is on its way, but for those wanting to find work now, there are still some options out there if you are willing and able to take on anything.

Farms on the Tablelands normally rely on backpackers to work to fulfil their visa requirements. Since the Australian borders have shut down and many backpackers and Pacific Islanders have returned home it has left a void that needs to be filled. Keely Van Wensveen, site manager for QITE, is currently recruiting for farms on the Tablelands. “At the moment we are looking for berry pickers for the upcoming season,” she said. “Previous fruit picking or packing experience is preferred, but it’s not essential, but you must be physically fit, have your own transport and some sort of identification. “We also are recruiting for shift workers for retail, as stores

need staff to restock. “We also get the occasional call from Avocado and Lime farmers looking for staff as their season is on-going and for people with experience with packing and bagging machines on Banana farms.” Brad Patison, Recruitment Officer from Speedie Staff Solutions, is also recruiting for local farms “At the moment we need to fill about 100 jobs in Mareeba and Innisfail,” he said. “We need fit and healthy people who are willing to pick fruit. “It’s not the most glamourous job but it is fulltime, Monday to Friday, 38 hours per week minimum and just above $24 per hour. “You must be healthy, have

your own transport and be willing to work hard.” Woolworths has also announced it will hire up to 20,000 workers in Australia over the next month. The supermarket giant is looking to fill checkout assistant, shelf stacking, call centre and distribution roles to meet the unprecedented demand for food and drinks. “These are uncertain times for many industries and we have an important role to play keeping Australians employed through this crisis,” Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci said. The company’s “immediate focus” will be the redeployment of staff affected by the mandatory closure of their hotel and pubs as well as preparing to of-

Mayor Marti set to lead the way NEW MAYOR: TRC Mayor Rod Marti casts his vote.

FORMER Tablelands Councillor Rod Marti will be the new Mayor of the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC). Mr Marti beat out three other contenders including incumbent deputy mayor Katrina Mellick to take out the top job. Even though it may take a while for Mr Marti to get his feet under the table, he believes that the council has a few urgent priorities. “There are three key things that we need to do at the council, one is reducing costs and making sure that we get our budget in order so that rates are affordable,” he said “The second thing is that the new council needs to take control of the organisation as the council has been run by officers, the council I will lead will take control back. “The third thing is we need to be fully engaged with the challenges facing us from Coronavirus (Covid-19).” Mr Marti was reluctant to announce any emergency measures for local businesses or ratepayers in light of the current coronavirus crisis. “People are struggling to pay rates now more than ever, many businesses have had to shut

down and reduce their trading hours. Some people are doing it really tough at the moment,” “Rate deferrals will be discussed with the new council because it’s a whole new ball game, this is something none of us has ever had to face before. “It’s the same situation right around the country and we need to start thinking differently about how we are going to address these problems which are affecting every single person in the country.” When asked whether keeping the TRC in budget or helping out ratepayers during the coronavirus crisis was the main priority, Mr Marti said it was still too early to tell. “I don’t want to discuss anything before sitting down with the new council.” Mr Marti believes that the Tablelands region was in the mood for change due to several issues facing the TRC. “Before coronavirus, council rates was the number one thing that people spoke to me about,” he said “People mentioned that they couldn’t afford to live here, people were closing down businesses, they were selling their properties, not just in one rates

category but right across the board. “It got to such an extent it was not affordable to live here. “The second issue was the previous council abrogated responsibility to ratepayers and handed over running of the council to senior officers. “That’s not what they are elected to do, they are elected to make decisions and call the shots and that hasn't been happening.” This is Mr Marti’s second attempt at running for mayor, after narrowly missing out to Joe Parronella in 2016. Previous to that Mr Marti was the Division 4 councillor from 2012 to 2016. Many pundits believed the top job was always a two-horse race between Mr Marti and Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick. Katrina Mellick posted on her official social media account on Sunday morning that “I gave it my best shot, I've done my best and it wasn’t meant to be.” “I wish Mr Marti and the councillors sitting around the table at TRC all the best.” Ms Mellick added “Now more than ever as a community we need to really work together through the difficult times that are ahead of us.”

Incumbents hold on in 2020 elections THE 2020 local council elections have been described as a farce due to technical malfunctions, social distancing misinformation and a low voter turnout. At one stage the ECQ website claimed that 1600% of the votes had been counted. Queensland's electoral commissioner says the technical issues experienced during the

count for the local government elections are “unacceptable.” Pat Vidgen said more than 1,000,000 votes were counted on Saturday, but problems with the “data feed” meant votes were not uploaded to the Electoral Commission of Queensland website in real-time. “We're very disappointed with that outcome,” he said. “The counting happened and

the counting was accurate. “I can assure you all the votes that were received yesterday were counted… it was a data feed issue unfortunately which meant the website didn't display them.” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she was “pretty disappointed” by the bungle. “They've got one job… to make sure they can run an elec-

tion,” she said. Ms Palaszczuk said it was not clear what went wrong but promised it would be investigated. “I'll get a full briefing on Monday but there will be a full review into it,” she said. The Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) won't have too many new faces sitting around the table when the new council is sworn in. At the time of printing (Monday, March 30 at 9am) the three incumbent Councillors – Lenore Wyatt, Kevin Davies and Mary Graham all looked safe at retaining their positions. One of the new faces to be sitting at the table is newcomer and first-time runner Locky Bensted who snagged 12.63% of the vote, with 83.29% of the vote counted. This makes Mr Bensted the second most popular person voted for at the MSC elections behind councillor Mary Graham. Mr Bensted said he was happy with the results and put it down to residents looking for a new face. “I think some people are looking for some new young blood and energy to come through.” He also acknowledged the work that the councillors that

won't be back for 2020 have put in. “The last four years have seen a very successful and stable MSC,” he said, “It’s good to see the incumbent councillors coming back, with everything that is going on I think it’s good to see some stability and familiar faces at the table.” As of Monday morning, the top six results with 83.29% counted were: Mary Graham – 12.81%, Locky Bensted – 12.63%, Lenore Wyatt – 12.09%, Kevin Davies – 11.90%, Danny Bird – 9.27% and Mario Mlikota – 8.93%. Tablelands Regional Council recorded similar results for their incumbent councillors. At the time of printing, the ECQ website claimed that only 4.5% of the vote counted for Division 1. With incumbent TRC Councillor Kate Eden on 41.27% trailing Kevin Cardew on 58.73% For Division 2 incumbent TRC councillor Annette Hayden was leading with 45.46% over Gavin Wright 39.24% and Garth Dunford on 15.30% with 34.42% counted. In Division 3 incumbent TRC Councillor Dave Bilney

has a fight on his hands with 43.72% against Shane Teehan on 40.80%, the third contender for Division 3 is Tansy Gleed on 15.49% with 61.28% counted. In Division 4 another TRC incumbent also looks to have a fight on their hands. Samantha Banks had 38.93%, against David Clifton who is currently sitting on 35.62%. Bringing up the tail is Micheal Hodgkins with 25.45% with only 13.58% counted. Division 5 was left vacant by Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick running for the position of Mayor. Peter Hodge looks to be the new councillor 55.21% over Ray Stewart Grandcourt on 44.79% with 11.18% counted The Division 6 seat, that was vacated by Councillor Owen Byrnes not returning, only had two runners with Bernie Wilce leading Darryl Drury 66.52% over 33.48% respectively, with 17.04% counted.  This information was at print deadline on Monday, March 30. Toppin in the drivers seat

IN the race for the top job at Mareeba Shire Council (MSC), Neither Edward “Nipper” Brown or Angela Toppin were willing to concede defeat or announce they had officially won the mayoral job as of Monday, March 30 at 9am (Express print deadline). Early Sunday morning Nipper Brown released a statement on social media saying “It has been a humbling experience and a huge honour to represent the Mareeba Shire for the past 6 years. Thanks to all for your support over the last couple of months. I want to take this opportunity to especially thank my wife and family for allowing me to do it and be absent a lot of the time. Time for a new chapter in life.” Angela Toppin also released a statement on social media saying “I have been contacted by a lot of people with well wishes, congratulations and prayers this morning. I am humbled by so much support. However as I went to bed last night, 40% of the vote was still to be counted. Counting has resumed this morning at 10am and I am waiting to hear the outcome.

I thank you for your belief and support and we will know more as the day progresses.” Later on Sunday afternoon, Councillor Brown was sounding a tad more optimistic when he narrowed the lead between himself and Councillor Toppin saying “I’m not conceding anything, I’m 800 behind and the chance of overcoming that with another 40 per cent of the vote to be counted is probably unlikely, but I’m not conceding,” he said. “That line about time for a new chapter in my life on social media could be about the Mayor's position if the numbers come in right.” By late Sunday night, the lead had shrunk down to only 636 votes, between Brown and Toppin with 70 per cent of the votes counted. “If I do happen to win, my first job will be to help people suffering through the Coronavirus crisis, by taking a 50 per cent pay cut,” said Nipper Brown. “I would also like to think we could defer or freeze rates for the short term to help people.” Mr Brown says the reason the voting was so tight for the mayoral race was due to the quality of the candidates.

“There were two good candidates, two different people, both coming from a successful MSC.” The praise is something Angela Toppin agreed with. “I believe that the shire had two good candidates,” she said “Before Nipper and I stood, we both agreed it would be good for the shire to have some choice rather than just one person standing for mayor. “I always expected that it wasn’t going to be a one-sided result.” Ms Toppin claimed that another reason it was so close and why all the incumbent councillors were going to be voted back in was due to the success of the current MSC under Mayor Gilmore. “Tom ran a very successful shire and was a very strong mayor and with him announcing that he wasn’t running, residents then had to decide as to who do we want then?” “Mayor Gilmore was a very strong leader and he did so much for Mareeba.” As of Sunday Toppin said “I’m not making any comments until the ECQ makes an official announcement.”

As of Monday, MSC mayoral hopeful Angela Toppin had not yet claimed victory.

Results correct at time of publication were Angela Toppin with 53.27% of the vote and Edward Nipper Brown 46.73% of the vote. 69.92% of the votes

were counted at time of print. This information was at print deadline on Monday, March 30 at 9am. Keep up

Community Pantry helps out the vulnerable If COVID-19 has taught us anything it’s that anyone can go from a comfortable existence to wondering where their next meal is going to come from in a short period of time. The Community Pantry is run by local not for profit group QITE and is open to anyone who is suffering hardship during this crisis by providing food at below cost price. Keely Van Wensveen, Site Manager for QITE Tablelands, said the community pantry started three years ago, stemming from a need from within the community. “It's for people who have been let go or if they are struggling to get groceries,” she said. “We buy bulk groceries at wholesale and then we sell them at 50 per cent off. So we are making a loss but the idea is to help people not to make a profit. “We found through our job active program that a lot of unemployed and disadvantaged people struggled to buy grocer-

ies each week. “We started the Community Pantry so that people could buy enough food to get through to the next fortnight.” There are Community Pantry locations in Mareeba, Atherton, Ravenshoe, Cairns, Innisfail and Tully. The Community Pantry is also part of the work for the dole scheme, with staff in the shop gaining works skills through learning how to stock take,

The garden is also used as a training ground, with participants learning horticulture skills, including planting, grafting and irrigation. Keely said that they have many success stories due to their work for the dole program “one

gentleman who had been unemployed for over 4 years, got a job after working with us. He came back several months later to thank us, for giving him the tools and skills to gain work.” she said “Through our program, we helped him to build his confidence and gain some real work skills as well as learning how to apply for jobs the correct way. “ Even though the Community pantry is federally funded, QITE decided to sell their groceries at a loss and that whatever losses the stores incur they are happy to cover. “It’s open to anyone who is in need. It isn’t means-tested, all you need is a referral card from a community organisation or QITE and people in need can pop in once every fortnight.” The community pantry sells staples, non-perishable and tinned food and is open Wednesday Thursday and Fridays at 2c Middlemus street Mareeba. Hairdressers dodge final cut

Dentists see huge decline in business

Cross Custom Meats owner Douglas Cross decided to give the elderly and disabled first preference when shopping in his butchery.

Pensioners given preference at butcher Local hair stylist Lea Di Pasquale has decided to close her salon for during COVID-19.

HAIRDRESSERS across the country have dodged a fatal blow to their businesses with the government retracting the rule for appointments to be under 30 minutes. The Prime Minister came out last week and announced that all barbers and hairdressers must adhere to a strict 30 minute timeline when cutting a customer's hair, this rule also applied to colorings, perms and other very lengthy processes. With hairdressers unable to procure some of their best money makers with womens cuts, colours and perms their businesses were sure to go under. However on Thursday, March 26, after meeting with the premiers and cabinet members Scott Morision decided to lift the 30 minute cap, stating that the 4sqm rule per person must be strictly observed and implemented. Lea Di Pasquale of Lea Di

Pasquale Hair Stylist in Mareeba is letting out a sigh of relief as the rule had been lifted, but said the damage is already done to the business. “If that rule had been kept in and enforced, all hairdressers would’ve closed down,” she said. “You cannot afford to keep a senior hairdresser on when you don’t have those options, plus with big overheads it’s not viable. “They are worried about exposure for a 30 minute haircut, it only takes minutes to spread the virus anyway.” Due to the decline in clients Lea has chosen to close her doors until the current situation improves, joining the Hairport Salon after they shut their doors last week. Beauticians have also suffered a massive blow being told to completely shut down during this pandemic.

LOCAL Atherton business, Cross Custom Meats, has recently decided to better help and support the most at risk during the national COVID-19 crisis – the elderly. Elderly customers will now get priority when being served at Cross Custom Meats as well as all elderly and disabled customers are being gifted a 1kg bag of mince with their purchases. They must show a valid pensioner or disability card. This decision came from the current crisis and the overwhelming amount of people unnecessarily panic buying, leaving our most vulnerable

residents with scraps at the supermarkets. Cross Custom Meats Owner Douglas Cross made this decision to better assist those who have trouble procuring produce during this pandemic. “We are doing this to help keep them safe and get them in and out as quickly as possible,” he said. “I’m just a local butcher trying to help out my local community as best I can. “People on the tablelands have a good mindset and see that what we are doing is what’s best for the community.”

Campgrounds closed

FOR those people who were thinking of “self-isolating in the bush” over the next few weeks, those camping plans will now have to be put on hold. Now is not the time for non-essential activities. The State Government last week announced the closure of all campgrounds in national

parks, state forests and state managed recreation and protected areas, in response to the COVID-19 (corona virus) outbreak. The closure of camping grounds does not include residential caravan parks. For more information please go to www.des.qld.gov.au

Looking after your mental health DURING the current COVID-19 crisis, doctors are reporting an increase in feelings of Anxiety and Depression in people right across Australia. Beyond Blue is one of Australia’s leading mental health support platforms and they’ve offered the following wellbeing advice. Try to maintain perspective While it is reasonable for people to be concerned about the outbreak of coronavirus, try to remember that medical, scientific and public health experts around the world are working hard to contain the virus, treat those affected and develop a vaccine as quickly as possible. Find a healthy balance in relation to media coverage Being exposed to large volumes of negative information can heighten feelings of anxiety. While it’s important to stay informed, you may find it useful to limit your media intake if it is upsetting you or your family. Access good quality information It’s important to get accurate information from credible sources such as those published by the government or Queensland Health. This will also help you maintain perspective and feel more in control. Try to maintain a practical and calm approach Widespread panic can complicate efforts to manage the outbreak effectively. Do your best to stay calm and follow official advice, particularly around observing good hygiene habits. Try not to make assumptions To contribute to a sense of community wellbeing, try to

remember that the coronavirus can affect anyone regardless of their nationality or ethnicity and remember that those with the disease have not done anything wrong. Managing your mental health while in self-isolation or quarantine There are a number of ways to support your mental health during periods of self-isolation or quarantine. Remind yourself that this is a temporary period of isolation to slow the spread of the virus. Remember that your effort is helping others in the community avoid contracting the virus. Stay connected with friends, family and colleagues via email, social media, video conferencing or telephone. Connect with others via the Beyond Blue forums thread – Engage in healthy activities that you enjoy and find relaxing, keep regular sleep routines and eat healthy foods, try to maintain physical activity. Establish routines as best possible and try to view this period as a new experience that can bring health benefits. For those working from home, try to maintain a healthy balance by allocating specific work hours, taking regular breaks and, if possible, establishing a dedicated work space. Conversations with children and young people Families and caregivers of children and young people should discuss news of the virus with those in their care in an open and honest way. My Mareeba Dentist co-owners Samuel Nastasi and Peter Blake have had to change how their business operates after restrictions took 80 percent of their business away.

DENTISTS across the country have had nearly 80 percent of their business stripped from them as new restrictions are put into place barring some basic dental procedures. As of Thursday, March 26 dentists were placed into level three restrictions, they were then only allowed to do emergency procedures that require immediate attention. Co-owners of My Mareeba Dentist Samuel Nastasi and Peter Blake have seen a near 50 percent decline in business since the restrictions were put in and are expecting a bigger decline as the restrictions are suspected to jump to level 4. “We have been forced to restrict all of our services, so now we are only open to people requiring urgent dental care,” Samuel said. “A very large chunk of our business has been taken away . “We have been restricted from using tools that produce

aerosol which are high speed handpieces and ultrasonics, which are used everyday.” My Mareeba Dentist can now only perform extractions of teeth and urgent dental care in the case of an accident. “For instance if a kid falls over and smashes his teeth we can attend to that, we can now mainly do trauma and extraction,” Samuel said. “Bare essentials treatments only.” Appointments for the dentist at My Mareeba Dentist are now completely online as they have closed their doors and are accepting call ins only where they will organise a time to see a dentist. My Mareeba Dentist has advised people who are coming in to get a procedure done to self screen before coming into the dentist and follow the government guidelines to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Beware of scammers EXPRESS journalist, Phil Brandel received a call over the weekend from a company claiming they had a refund for an upcoming flight (Phil didn’t have any upcoming flights) they claimed that they could refund his flight onto his credit card. After giving them fake credit card numbers and telling them his name was Scott Morrison they hung up. Unfortunately, scammers are taking advantage of the spread of coronavirus to exploit and play on the fears of consumers across Australia. Karl Hanmore, the acting head of the Australian Cyber Security Centre – part of the Australian Signals Directorate – said there are already examples of coronavirus-inspired cybercrime. “I’d be suggesting people be cyber-alert but not cyberalarmed,” he said. “Most importantly, don’t click on links you receive via text message or email, especially if they’re around the coronavirus.” Phishing scams using COVID-19-themed text messages are already circulating in Australia. One of them appears to be sent from “GOV” and shares a link that claims to help people find out where they can get tested for coronavirus. But the link and the sender are fake, clicking on the link could install malware designed to steal your banking details. “That’s criminals trying to steal your banking details at a time when you’re least able

to protect yourself,” says Mr Hanmore. Scammers are also doing things such as falsely selling coronavirus-related products online, and using fake emails or text messages to try and obtain personal data. There have also been reports of phishing emails and phone calls impersonating entities. These include the World Health Organisation, government authorities and legitimate businesses such as travel agents and telecommunications companies. Scammers will also try and sell you products claiming to be a vaccine or cure for the coronavirus as well as investment scams claiming coronavirus has created opportunities. Be aware of fraudulent emails claiming to be from experts saying that they have information about the virus. Be careful of fake online shopping sites requesting unusual payment methods such as upfront payment via money order, wire transfer, international funds transfer, preloaded card or electronic currency, like Bitcoin. Don’t click on links from sources you don’t know, don’t open attachments or click on links in emails, text messages or social media messages you’ve received from strangers – just press delete. 2020 Mareeba Rodeo cancelled IN light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Mareeba Rodeo Association has decided to cancel the Mareeba Rodeo for 2020. The decision, that was announced on Monday, March 23, came after several meetings and discussions amongst the committee to discuss the best course of action. The Mareeba Rodeo will now join a long list of rodeos across the far north that have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic including, Mt Garnet, Laura, Eureka Creek and more. Mareeba Rodeo President Peter Brown is disappointed that the rodeo will not go ahead but said it is in the best interest for the community. “It is 100 percent the best decision to make, we took everything into account,” he said. “This wasn’t just about the Mareeba Rodeo, but Queensland as a whole. “If we can save even one life by cancelling the rodeo, then that’s reason enough.” Mr Brown also said that they will begin planning for the 2021 Mareeba Rodeo soon, making it “bigger and better.” The highly anticipated Great Northern Bull riding Series that was set to be held in April has also been postponed and a date is being worked on for Early September. The PBR event to be held in

Stay fit, active and healthy during COVID WITH many residents now staying home and following government advice on helping to stop the spread of Coronavirus, the local gyms in Mareeba have opted to do what they can by offering online classes, outdoor sessions and even hiring out equipment. After the announcement last week that saw gyms included in the Coronavirus Australia closure list, local gyms wasted no time in looking at what other options they could implement for their members and anyone in the community. Essential Fitness, Furious 40 (part of Furious Fitness Mareeba), Curves Atherton and Mareeba and CrossFit Mareeba are now all offering a range of options for people wanting to shave off those isolation kilos and keep in shape while the gyms are closed. CrossFit Mareeba last week launched online collaborative crossfit classes so people can go through the routines at home, while Furious Fitness has recommended their Furious 40 program that is now offering personal training and is continu-

ing to sell their supplements and merchandise online. Essential Fitness has taken it a step further and has even hired out some of its gym equipment to patrons so they can keep bettering themselves while at home. They will also be offering live classes online starting this week. Curves Mareeba and Atherton are offering free live workouts (for all ages and fitness levels) to anyone that wants to join. The online workout platform can be accessed via the Curves Atherton and Curves Mareeba Facebook page direct. It also includes recipe tips, live chats on wellness and for women to check in – the onestop women’s health and wellness shop. Mareeba Crossfit owner Simon Cockrem decided to launch online classes so people who are staying at home can continue their routines and get fit. “Obviously the government lockdown forced all the gyms and stuff to close,” he said. “Our sole focus is our members so we know we had to come up with something to keep ac-

tive. “It’s very important to stay active at the moment.” Simon has also been hiring out the crossfit equipment to the members for use during the online classes. There are three different stages that you can do from home, ranging from body weights all the way up to full equipment so anyone can get involved. “This can be a very stressful time for people so these classes are a great way to escape,” Simon said. The online classes are open to anyone who is looking to stay active at home with proper instruction. To get involved contact Simon at hello@crossfitmareeba.com or phone 0488 700 086. Being active can not only keep us healthy, but it can also help us fight off infection and boost our mental health.

events remains our top priority,” they said. “We are planning to reschedule the events that have been

postponed in Newcastle, Cairns and Sydney for later in the year. “Under the guidance of the Australian Health Protection

Principal Committee (AHPPC) and the relevant Health and Government authorities we are monitoring this situation.”

Tablelands teams take out school sailing comp TWO Tablelands teams took out top podium spots in the latest round of High School Team Sailing. The Atherton State High School (ASHS) Blitz and the Tableland Tigers teams both participated in the latest round of the sailing competition held at Tinaroo Dam on Sunday, March 15. ASHS Blitz sailed home to claim first spot with the Tablelands Tigers coming in runnerup. ASHS students have been training since September last year in preparation for this 2020 High School Team Sailing Season. Father and son team, Duncan and Peter MacGregor, have been tutoring the teams for six months using their combined sailing experience.

The Atherton State High School Sailing team took out first place at the recent High School Sailing Competition at Tinaroo Dam.

Coach Peter MacGregor has pulled upon his 20 years of sailing experience to help steer the two tableland teams to podium finishes. “It was absolutely fantastic to see both of the teams finish on the podium,” he said. “We did a lot of work last

year and early this year leading into the competition.” The remainder of the High School Sailing season has been postponed due to COVID-19. The winner of the finals will get the chance to represent Queensland at the Australian Nationals to be held later in the year.

Metrogaine off in 2020

THE Mareeba Lions annual town Metrogaine for 2020 has been regretfully cancelled in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. All across the state, community and sporting group events are being cancelled and postponed in large numbers to better ensure the health and safety of all Australians. The Mareeba Lions Club

made the executive decision to cancel their Metrogaine that was scheduled to be held at Arnold Park on Saturday, June 21. Mareeba Lions Club’s Tom Braes OAM, has issued an apology for the cancellation, but is looking forward to 2021. “These are uncertain times, but we trust we will be able to resurrect the event in 2021,” he said.

“We wish the community the best and thank them for their support.” The Mareeba Lions Metrogaine is held each year in June and is an opportunity for locals to either run, bike or walk as they navigate around the town. It is also fundraiser for the for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.
