On September 9 the Tablelands Pregnancy, Baby and Child Expo will take place at Destiny Community Church in Atherton.

The event will showcase a wide range of exhibitors specialising in all things baby and child, including pregnancy.

This inaugural event is free to enter and stall holders will feature baby products, community services, organisations and family information. There will also be children’s activities.

The fun kicks off at 9am.

MAREEBA growers are being invited to learn their right and obligations under the new horticulture code of conduct in a free workshop hosted by Growcom on August 17 at the Jackaroo Motel at 4.30pm.

The new code, introduced on April 1, has been designed to protect growers’ interests while reflecting the business flexibilities and realities needed to operate in the market place. A guest speaker from the ACCC will give an overview of the code and take questions.

This weekend Tablelanders have the opportunity and privilege to meet the father of fallen war hero Cameron Baird and see the Victoria Cross war medal Cameron was given posthumously.

Doug Baird will be speaking to the public at the Mareeba RSL’s annual Anzac Ball this Saturday evening – a role which he

says gives him the honour of recognising the important work that his son’s commandment are involved in.

“It’s very important in the early days to acknowledge and get the word out about the 2nd commando Regiment,” said Mr Baird.

The 2nd Commando Regiment is a special forces unit of the Australian Army.

Corporal Cameron Baird was the first Aus-

tralian commando to be awarded a Victoria Cross and the first posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross for Australia. Corporal Baird is also the 100th Australian to be awarded a Victoria Cross.

On 22 June 2013, Corporal Baird was on his fourth deployment to Afghanistan and leading his Special Operations Task Group team when he was killed during an engagement with insurgents in

the Khod Valley, Uruzgan province.

His father, Doug, will be talking this Saturday about his son’s valiant achievements in and out of the army.

“I like to talk about some of the life values he had,” said Mr Baird.

“And the things he would have done had he had the chance. For example he wanted to visit his old primary school and reach out to them and help

inspire the children.

“He had great work ethics.”

The 2017 Annual Anzac Ball will take place this Saturday, August 12 at Mareeba RSL. Tickets are $70 for adults and $30 for children with a three course meal included and live music entertainment with the 1RAR Band Townsville.

Body discovered in search for missing woman Detectives investigating the disappearance of missing Cooktown woman 42-year-old Donna Louise Steele located a woman’s body on Sunday morning.

The last two confirmed sightings of Ms Steele

were at a Parkinson Street caravan park last Tuesday, August 2 and a Helen Street independent supermarket around 12.15pm on Wednesday, August 3.

Around 5.20am Sunday morning police responded

to reports of a woman’s body at Leggett’s Crossing, Endeavour Valley Road.

A crime scene has been declared with detectives and specialist police in attendance.

Police are treating the

woman’s death as suspicious and have set up an investigation centre at Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

Investigations are ongoing and detectives are appealing for any witness-

es to come forward with information.

New service to open for healthcare card holders

Amaroo set to offer bulk billing

The bulk billing crisis in Mareeba has partially been solved thanks to an expansion of Amaroo Medical happening early next year.

Cheryl Harnischfeger, owner of the Mareeba practice, has secured funding for a new community medical centre that will offer healthcare card holders a dedicated bulk billing service. The practice will sit next to Amaroo Medical on Karobean Drive and is due to be operating by midJanuary 2018.

Mrs Harnischfeger is also in talks with Queensland Health to offer an interim service at Mareeba Hospital to keep the bulk billed GP centre going past the October 1 deadline which marks the end of COAG funding and would have meant the end of any bulk billing doctors in the town.

“Their funding runs out in October – in reality we’ll be up and running mid-January but there’s obviously that big gap,” said Mrs Harnischfeger.

“We’re working with the hospital about an interim service where we’re setting up some temporary clinics run in the hospital under us. It will provide a temporary avenue for the patients they already have and particularly through the chronic disease clinics.”

Mrs Harnischfeger secured funding for her new community medical centre at the end of July. The criteria for the Commonwealth Grant meant she had to set the facility up for training both registrars and medical students. She additionally chose to offer a bulk billing option for health care card holders, pension card holders and those under 16.

“It’s one of those things that I’ve always wanted to

do, to provide services for those socially disadvantaged,” she said.

“But really we haven’t had the capacity to do so.

“Our motto is caring for the community and believe it or not we actually do believe that, and it’s not just about caring for people who can afford to pay. So the secret is to make a service to accommodate those people that is financially viable for us as well.”

Amaroo Medical has only been operating for two years and is already full to capacity. There is a waiting time of two weeks for all doctors in the town which Mrs Harnischfeger is hoping to reduce with the addition of the new GP supervisor and two training registrars.

“The expectation won’t be that you get the doctor of your choice all the time because you’ll have training registrars that will be here 6-12 months at a

time,” she said. “It’s kind of a trade off - we can run it as a bulk billing service but it will need to have this sort of criteria to make it financially viable.”

It is not clear whether Queensland Health will be finding additional funding for a GP clinic at Mareeba Hospital once Amaroo’s new community clinic opens up in January.

But Mrs Harnischfeger said moving those services away from the hospital and into private practice is a good thing.

“The reality is you don’t want GP services in the hospital because it detracts from what their primary function,” she said.

“They’re much less efficient in dealing with primary care because they’re designed to be looking after a different type of patient.

People shouldn’t be going there for their pap smear or their drivers license medical. You’re paying a big

system for those sort of services within a hospital that can be accommodated in a general practice much more cheaply and efficiently. But for a long time Mareeba has not had any option.”

Kuranda frog funding KURANDA Envirocare was recently awarded $9,240 in funding to protect biodiversity.

‘Mareeba Hospital saved our lives’

Heidi Xhafer and her husband Lee were blown away by the treatment they received at Mareeba Hospital a few weeks ago when Heidi and her unborn baby nearly died of a pregnancy complication.

Heidi, from Mareeba, was due to have baby Micah by caesarean section in Cairns on July 13 but when late one night four days before her appointment, she felt excruciating pain and was unable to move.

“I was at home and at 10.30pm at night. I couldn’t get up off the couch, I couldn’t take a step forward without burning pain. I thought this is not normal,” said Heidi.

“I rang my midwife and she said come in straight away and I said I don’t even think I can make it to the car. I can’t walk. She said call an ambulance now and they’ll take you to the hospital.”

Staff at the hospital acted quickly to get Heidi into theatre and luckily they

did because her uterus had ruptured and she was suffering from internal bleeding. Baby Micah was left without oxygen and had to be resuscitated.

“They were meant to send me to Cairns because of my last c-section, but there was no time so Mareeba had to make a decision. They said ‘we need to do this now because we’re not comfortable with the amount of pain you’re in’,” said Heidi. “They didn’t know exactly what was wrong until they opened me up and she said she didn’t have to make any cuts in the uterus it was wide open – the whole scar had just split open.”

Mareeba Hospital doesn’t usually perform emergency c-sections so they had to call in extra help from Atherton and Cairns to help deliver Micah safely.

“It was a very big thing for the hospital to be put on the spot and deal with that,” said Heidi.

“But they were amazing. They got all their theatre staff together. They

were really good.”

Heidi lost four litres of blood during the ordeal and had a huge blood clot behind her placenta. For almost eight hours staff had to resuscitate Micah.

The pair were transported to Cairns Base Hospital before being airlifted to Townsville the same night so that Micah could receive the best paediatric care available in the region. He was in the NICU and special care units for two weeks. Heidi was discharged after five days.

Now home and recovering from their ordeal, Heidi and her husband Lee have reflected on how lucky they have been.

“They said if they had sent us in the ambulance to Cairns that night we both would have died,” said Heidi. “Mareeba Hospital did amazing and we need them. We probably would have died if they weren’t there because we needed to be seen straight away.”

Micah is Lee and Heidi’s second child. They have a two year old boy called Levi.

Home schooling boom on the Tablelands

The number of Queensland parents choosing to home school their children has more than doubled in the last five years and the Tablelands has a growing community of children who are being educated by their parents.

Such is the curiosity about how it works, a conference will be held in Atherton later this month that will attempt to answer some of the questions surrounding this increasingly popular form of education.

Miranda Reis from Mareeba is part of the Tablelands Home Education Group and says that choosing to keep her three children – Tekira, 13, Ryder, 10 and Zak, 5 - out of main stream school was an easy decision.

“Tekira did kindergarden and Grade 1 at

school and she was very happy, but when Ryder started coming up to being that age I felt he really wasn’t ready for school socially and academically,” said Miranda.

“I knew a bit about home schooling, not a lot, but I took Tekira out of school and I really enjoyed it.”

Miranda has a background in teaching which she says gave her some confidence about teaching her own children, but still says that taking those first few steps towards home schooling were a little daunting.

“That first step is always tricky,” she said, “But luckily because there is a big support network on the Tablelands, we found our way. And now with the internet it’s so much easier.

There are Facebook groups where you can talk to people and get advice. It’s real-

ly easy now.”

With the children getting one-on-one attention, subjects are dealt with quicker and more efficiently, meaning there’s less time spent formally sitting around a table with books - great news for kids who prefer hands on learning.

“The thing with school is that there’s a lot of waiting and a lot of time spent with the teachers having to go around all of the kids – we don’t have that,” says Miranda.

“In regards to academic work we would do an hour or two a day and then you’ve got after school activities. The time is a lot more flexible.”

The Tablelands Home Education Group meet every Thursday giving the children a chance to socialise and the parents a chance to swap ideas.

“We organise a calendar each term and it’s usually a

range of fun and education activities,” said Miranda.

“We might go to the gallery in Cairns and this term we’re going to the museum. So it might be a big day out. Or it might just be doing craft. We hire halls and we go to some of the bigger parks. It’s a combination of educational or it might be swim in the summer.”

The reasons why so many are turning to home schooling are varied.

“In the past a lot of people chose to home educate for religious reasons - that’s probably what comes up in

peoples’ minds when they think of home education,” said Miranda.

“Now the reasons are much more varied and reasons include trying to offer a more Individualised education for your child, there’s people who have problems at school so they take their children out, bullying, special needs, medical conditions.

Some people do it for the lifestyle. And when it becomes more well-known it then becomes an option for more people.”

There are however, a growing number of parents

becoming more dissatisfied with main stream schools.

“That one size fits all doesn’t always work and if your child is struggling academically to give your child some one-to-one can really help turn that problem around,” said Miranda.

“Schools vary – some are very good at addressing these problems and others are not meeting the needs of these families.”

Miranda says that her children have a “love” of reading and are very self-motivated to learn.

Home schooling also gives them the opportunity to

pursue their own interests which Miranda incorporates into an educational activity.

On Saturday, August 26 the Tablelands Home Education Group and Home Education Association Queensland will be hosting a one day conference at Northpointe Conference Centre, in Atherton. Cook Shire recycling improvement Recycling in Cook Shire is now quicker and easier, with recycling skips and trailer now accepting unsorted recyclables.

Previously glass, plastic, aluminium and paper products had to be dumped into the separate marked compartments and if waste was mixed the whole amount had to be dumped into general waste, but Cook Shire Council has made the process easier.

“People can now dump unsorted recyclables into any compartment in our recy-

cling skips and trailers,” Cook Shire Council Waste Management Coordinator Kristina Davidson said.

“New signage will be installed on the skips, and the compartments will be removed, also allowing more room.”

Paper and cardboard such as newspapers, magazines, junk mail and wrapping paper; aluminium and steel cans, including aerosol cans such as hair and insect spray; all glass bottles and jars, not including glassware or window

glass; and type 1 to 6 plastic bottles and containers can be recycled free at any recycling skip, trailer, or waste transfer station. Recyclables must be placed in the skip loose, as bagged recyclables will not be accepted. The recyclables are then sent to Cairns Material Recovery Facility for sorting and baling. If you would like to recycle cans through the Endeavour Lions Club, please contact the club directly for more information.

bulk cardboard and paper waste are encouraged to take it directly to their nearest waste transfer station, where it can be decontaminated and mulched with green waste, to further reduce costs of transportation to Cairns.

“Removing the compartments also means the skips don’t need emptying as regularly, as previously they were emptied when any one compartment became full,” Ms Davidson said. “This means less wear and tear on the skips.”

Local heroes recognised

The work of police officers and fire fighters from across the Tablelands was honoured last week in a ceremony in Mareeba.

Servicemen and women young and old were applauded for their courageous work, dedication and length of time serving the community in jobs that are often dangerous and unforgiving.

“The work that we do at times is thankless and not incredibly rewarding, or at times feels like it is not rewarding,” said Senior Sergeant Mark Stewart as he addressed the attendees on Wednesday, August 2.

“So these awards are incredibly important to us.”

The combined awards ceremony was held at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines building

on Peters Street where family members came along to celebrate the achievements.

But it wasn’t just police officers and fire fighters who received awards.

Aidan Foley, from Croydon, was invited to the ceremony to receive an Assistant Commissioner’s Certificate for helping to save the life of an elderly woman whose house caught on fire.

“The Assistant Commissioner’s Certificate of Appreciation is given to members of the public for providing the police with assistance,” said Senior Sergeant Mark Stewart.

In March 2015 an elderly woman was forced out of her home after oil in the stove ignited and filled the house with smoke.

Aidan Foley and his parents Anthony and Leonie stopped the lady from re-entering the home and

extinguished the fire before the emergency services could get there.

“We were really surprised to hear we had got this certificate,” said Mr Foley who accepted his parents’ certificates as well as his own.

“We didn’t think about what we were doing. We just thought we should go and help.”

Constable Gavin Brown was also awarded the Assistant Commissioner’s Certificate for negotiating with and saving the life of a man who shot himself in the face with a rifle in Townsville in July last year. Constable Brown was applauded for his “considerable courage for entering a building where someone is known to be armed.”

Administration staff, auxiliaries and police referral agencies were also honoured at the ceremony.

Upset over water waste continues

Biboohra farmer Mark Bishop watched in horror last week as the river that runs through his property swelled with water after SunWater began releasing hundreds of megalitres of water from Tinaroo Dam. SunWater had to release the water under statutory regulations handed down by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (See The Express August 2).

“It’s pretty stupid letting that amount of water go in the middle of a drought,” said Mr Bishop who took these photos of the river – which is usually just a trickle – on Friday morning.

Mr Bishop’s hay and turf farm sits on Bilwon Road.

“We’re probably one of the last irrigated properties in Biboohra heading out along the river,” he said.

“Everything that goes past here is a waste.”

Mr Bishop said he has been forced to fill in all of his pump sites with sand.

SunWater held talks with Tableland irrigators on Tuesday, August 2 to discuss the problem and local irrigators have written to the Minister for the Department of Natural Resources and Mines Anthony Lynham to get the legalities of releasing water from the dam changed.

Mareeba and Dimbulah Irrigation Council Chairman Joe Moro said they have been waiting a long time for an inquiry into the situation.

“We are going to continue to put pressure on to have more done as soon as possible,” he said.

“The irrigators are not content to wait. We want to bring it forward as soon as possible.”

The drama has reignited the idea of a diversion from the North Johnstone River into Tinaroo, plumping resources for farmers.

The Mareeba and Dimbulah Irrigation Council has written to Barnaby Joyce asking for the project to be looked at again.

Federal member for Kennedy Bob Katter has also chimed in on the debate, saying the North Johnstone transfer should be seriously considered.

“The North Johnston transfer costs nothing and it’s a nice little secure supply of water which would overcome the situation now, where we are really desperate with worry about the supply of water, and we’ve still got four or five months to go of the dry,” he said.

“The Government is asking for very serious trouble if they allow that water flow to go. No one is going to stand idly by and watch 50 years of work go down the drain – certainly not people like Johnny Gambino, Makse Srhoj, Scotty Dixon, Bernie O’Shea and Joe Moro from Mareeba’s Rural Action Council, who secured the Federal farm assistance welfare grants for over 11,000 Australian families.

If you think blokes like that are going to sit back and cop this – no way, Jose.”

Mr Katter said the idea of releasing water from the dam for environmental attributes is not natural.

“There have been years where the Barron has hardly run at all, so there’s no environmental flows in those years! Sometimes a river doesn’t flow when we don’t get any rainfall – and that’s natural,” he said, “To provide a guaranteed flow every year is not natural. And I don’t think nature gets really upset when we take some of the massive floodwaters that occur and hold a little bit of it back for usage.”

Mr Katter suggested other alternatives to the problem such as a second dam on the Barron River.

“Mareeba is right on the Mitchell River – the biggest river in Australia – yet we’re using none of the water!,” he said.

“But there is a magnificent dam scheme just a couple of kilometres downstream (from Quaid’s), and that’s the site where we can move on to another 10,00020,000ha of irrigation, but most importantly, secure the supply of water particularly for our mango and avocado trees. If they die, it’s several years before they can come back into production.”

Military enthusiasts had a field day in Mareeba over the weekend when memorabilia from a bygone era was put on display.

From tanks to medals, to guns and uniforms, items from military units all over the world was brought to the Mareeba Turf Club for the ‘Military Muster’.

Usually held in Ravenshoe the annual event has been relocated to Mareeba for the first time this year.

“Mareeba lends itself well to the event considering its rich World War II association,” said event

publicity officer John Hardy.

“From July 1942 to May 1943 the US army air force decided to establish a new advanced operational base here. Mareeba became FNQ’s advanced operational base.”

Most of the equipment on display hailed from the World War II era, with others from the Vietnam war and modern day battles.

Reenactment groups and collectors from all over the Far North came along for the two day event to show off the items which depict a moment in history,

Residents not consulted I am currently at a loss why the Mareeba Shire Council would build a RV Dump site in a residential area on James Street, Mareeba with no consultation with the residents who live in the Street.

I contacted the council and received a call from Morris. He said the site was 65m off James St, having stepped it out myself I’m estimating it is 30m not 65.

I was told that there is going to be no beautification of the site, no dust mitigation put in place and because the people using the site would not be making a mess, no cleaning.

There will be no light shields so we have to not only put up with the dust, smell and essentially a public toilet in front of our houses we also have to put up with headlights shining into our homes.

I was told that there were a number of sites considered but this one in a residential area was chosen and all with no residents consulted.

I was told that council “will monitor” the site. I don’t want to sit on my patio watching/seeing people dump their waste, have to put up with dust and smells from a public toilet, extra traffic and headlights in my home all hours of the night without anyone asking me.

And I can only imagine the depreciation of property prices now.

Locals concerned As I listen to fellow resident’s attending the Mareeba Markets, the concerns are real. Costs associated with everyday necessities like power and car registration are just not letting up.

Recent data shows that more than 460 Queensland homes have their electricity cut off every week and commercial businesses are looking at having to reduce the number of vehicles they have, as they simply cannot afford to pay registration fees.

The last thing I want to see is the elderly, families and small business going backwards because the Government of the day cannot get its act together and deliver intiatives that benefit our local families and businesses.

I support an elected LNP Government that will freeze vehicle registration price increases for three years and fast track the establishment of a cost effective and reliable baseload power source for Far North Queensland.

After all, that is what politicians are elected to do.

Labor lets locals down I like many in the district are left dumbfounded over the decision by the Qld Labor Government to release approximately 300 mega litres of water daily from Tinaroo Dam for environmental reasons.

At a time when we should be supporting our agricultural sector here on the Tablelands we have a state govern-

ment that wants to impose a decision on us from Brisbane that’s designed to kick farmers while they are down.

Today I have contacted the minister responsible Dr Anthony Lyhnam, questioned the decision and communicated how ludicrous and unfair this decision is. What disturbs me the most is the lack of any heartfelt consultation from the Palaszczuk government with the very people this decision impacts upon, our farmers I call on the Labor government’s candidate for Cook Ms Cynthia Lui to travel to Mareeba and hear firsthand the concerns of people she will purport to represent should she be elected at the next state election!

Unless Minister Lyhnam can provide the regions farmers with some guarantee that they won’t be worse off because of this decision I cannot in good conscience support this government in the parliament of Queensland.

Our Mareeba Shire Council has just approved requests by a couple of developers to have their future development applications assessed under the old, superseded Mareeba Shire Council Planning Scheme.

What a gift. Who profits? How does such land banking benefit communities? Are community concerns even

A costly state of affairs Hey, remember the old days? Old Herbie, local council employee in his bitumen streaked Datsun Ute loaded with blue-metal and bitumen mix crawled along the road from pot-hole to pot-hole accompanied by his young helper.

Herbie seemed to be on the road for life, checking every carriageway on his rounds, guided by his experience of potential bad spots, weather conditions, and after work reports from locals.

We hardly ever saw pot-holes get out of control and grow to the dimensions of Vesuvian craters.

Recently Jerry Micola threatened to “do a Herbie” before he got action on the pot-holes outside his place.

Now-a-days, because old Herbie is no longer on the job, a pot-hole needs to be reported by a responsible citizen.

It seems that the message is transferred to the agenda for the next full sitting of the Council, who then deliberate and arrive at the conclusion that it must be “looked into”.

Following an inspection by the chief hole-inspector a condition report is written up followed by an actionplan.

The action plan entails a quantity

survey and budget estimates of the proposed works.

This needs to be approved by the chief authoriser assisted by a couple of clerks to check figures and funding availability.

Next come’s the procurement of materials and workforce allocation along with the notification to the preferred-traffic control company of intent to proceed with works.

The pot-hole, now large enough to hold half of the water contained in Lake Tinaroo, is cordoned off with witch’s hats by one of the four blokes who have arrives in a huge council truck complete with mini-roller and road-mix, but only after the Stop Go personnel are in place.

And on it goes until the hole has been filled.

This is not intended as a reflection on any Council or other employee, as they must follow the procedures and conditions set down by the authorities for their employment and safety.

I admit that I have been guilty of some exaggeration, simply to emphasize an issue.

But one has to express some chagrin at how we have arrived at this state of inefficiency and costly state of affairs.

Knuth gets pensioners a state-wide deal

Thanks to KAP’s Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth, a small pilot program to provide senior citizens in need with lawn mowing care vouchers will be rolled out across all of Queensland.

Last year, Shane fought to have the pilot program Home Care reinstated after the Newman Government scrapped it.

After Shane’s relentless lobbying, the government reinstated the program in the Atherton Tablelands and Shane has now got the Government to agree to not only continue the pilot program, but to extend the program across Queensland.

“This program is so important,” Shane said. “It might not seem like much,

but to pensioners and people with disabilities, it is everything.”

“It can be very distressing for senior citizens to struggle with tasks that they used to be able to do easily.

“It’s critical that we give them as much support as we can. The lawn mowing and gardening vouchers are a sensible way to make a big difference to their lives.”

“For many people this help can be the difference of being able to continue living in their own home rather than going into care.

“This is a great outcome for senior citizens in Queensland. I’m very proud to have been a part of it,” Shane said.

Atherton State High School entered one of its largest cattle handling teams into the recent town show with 20 students and 20 head of cattle competing.

Many placings were achieved with the livestock as well as several board ribbons highlighting the success of the school’s Charbray and Murray Grey stud.

The team also competed at the Tully and Malanda shows.

The team were supported by Gadgarra Murray Grey Stud, Tablelands Fertilizer (CRT) and Newcombes Charbrays.

Mossman Mill plant availability was below budget for Week 8 but weekly throughput was above target.

The factory processed 37,482 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 329 tonnes/hour.

Two major down time events occurred during the week.

A pinion gear on the drive for the cane carrier failed, and the bagasse reclaimer also failed.

Advantage was taken of this downtime in other parts of the factory and no scheduled maintenance day was required this week.

Mr Cupitt said Flanagan has fought a couple of his boxers.

“Flanagan was with Hawks Boxing Club and has fought a couple of my Boxers and come away with the win each time,” he said.

“I'm really glad to see a local lad from NQ achieve his dreams, I wish him all the best for the future and his upcoming Professional fight in Townsville in October.

Junior gymnastics championships The 2017 Think Water FNQ Junior Gymnastics Regional Championships were held over the weekend, August 5 and 6.

Mareeba Gymnastics Club hosted the annual event which saw competitors travel from Atherton, Barron Valley, Malanda and South Cairns gymnas-

tics clubs. The Junior Regional Championships are run on an annual basis for levels 3 to 6 for both WAG and MAG and are usually run in conjunction with an invitational competition inviting the WAG and MAG levels 1 and 2.

at a Gymnastics Queensland sanctioned event.

The competition began at 8.30am on Saturday and went right through till 5.40pm on Sunday.

The Wallbridge Family Community Golf Day was held again recently as a memorial for Curtis Wallbridge, a keen Mareeba golfer.

Over 40 locals took part in the event that was held on July 23 at Mareeba Golf Club.

Gators close in on final

It was a close win for the Gladiators at the weekend in their last home game of the season against the Brothers, the score at 2422 at full time.

But the Mareeba team are still sitting in second place on the ladder as they head into the last few games of the season.

Coach Tye Ingebrigtsen is thrilled with the team’s performance so far and says the goal is to get into the top 3.

“We’ve done a lot of hard work during the year so we’ve pretty much cemented our top 4 spot now so it’s important how these next few games pan out,” he said.

“Our goal is to get into

the top 3, you get two chances that way. That’s definitely our next goal to tick off the list.”

With a couple of their top players still on the sidelines due to injury, Ingebrigtsen is not celebrating yet.

“It’s really important that we go into the finals with a hard game so we’ve had Brothers this week and Ivanhoes next week, two teams that are in the top 5 at the moment,” he said.

“So it’s important to get used to those tight contests so we get used to what’s going on in the next few weeks.”

On Friday night the current A graders got to meet past champions from 2007

- the last time the Gators won the CDRL premiership.

Captain coach at the time Chris Shepherd met up with the old players for a reunion and got to pass on some tips to current coach Tye Ingebrigtsen.

“I had a look at that team they had and they were unbelievable,” said Ingebrigtsen.

“Honestly I think that the 2007 team was arguably the best side this club has ever had. They had that experience and that class.

Our team is real young and youthful, we’re still inconsistent at times because of the age of most of the players. But that side that they had was very impressive.”

Bulls still kicking The final standings for the 2017 FNQ Football season is anyone’s guess with three sides in the top four dropping points on the weekend and the Mareeba Bulls claiming all three in a hard fought 3-0 away win to the Leichhardt Lions on Sunday at White Rock.

The equation for the Bulls is simple – win their last two remaining fixtures of the season and a finals berth is possible. The fact the two remaining games against the Innisfail Cutters and Southside Cutters are both at home sets up a grandstand finish.

On the weekend the Comets win against the Cutters and Stratford’s 1-1 draw against the Marlin Coast Rangers, means there is five points difference between first and fifth. The Bulls Sunday game against the Lions was a must win and were given the perfect start with Lions defender Joshua Mulls deflecting a Robert Pendenza cross into the back of the net inside the opening three minutes of play. Alex Plowman then got the Bulls two goals clear with a strong header on the 35th minute from the a Paul Ruiz corner. The Bulls went into the break two up.

The second half message from the Bulls was to ensure they stay composed and don’t let the Lions back in the game, and even though the homeside lifted and gave everything at the Mareeba defence, they stood strong and got the goods towards the end of the match with Ruiz scoring a 85th minute freekick to

put the Bulls 3-0 up and secure the win.

Bulls coach Alex Srhoj described the match as not pretty, but it was a job done.

“It was not the best game we played, but three goals, clean sheet and three points was what the doctor ordered, so we leave happy and now focus on Innisfail this weekend,” Srhoj said.

The Bulls reserves fought out a 2-2 draw, but being 2-0 up, it could be seen as two points dropped, with the draw

not really doing either side a favour with three rounds remaining.

The Bulls ladies and both 2nd division mens side went down, with the ladies losing 6-1 on Sunday to the Lions, the 2nd division Ornage going down 5-0 in a shock result away to the Innisfail Cutters and the 2nd division Black were 1-0 up to the leaders the Marlin Coast Rangers, only to have keeper Zakk Wilk sent off and fighting hard, but went down 2-1.

Roosters claim third straight win The Atherton Roosters have made it four wins out of their last five matches after a dominant performance at Roosters Stadium on Saturday night winning 52 to 18 over the Tully Tigers.

A man of the match performance from Nigel Woodleigh with four tries and six goals set up what was probably the team’s best performance of the season. Woodleigh has crossed for nine tries in the Roosters last four games.

Whilst ball skills were at a premium it allowed the match to open up with length of field intercepts from Tully that were pulled up just short of the line and the ensuing counterattacks resulting in at least two tries for Atherton.

The half time score was 26 to 12 but that hid the dominance and possession figures that the Roosters were accumulating.

The Atherton Roosters performance over the last

month or so despite loss of players due to illness and injury must warm the hearts of coaching staff as they look forward to a big centenary season in 2018.

Atherton reserves went down to Tully 46 to nil in the earlier match.

The Roosters play Mossman Port Douglas this Saturday night in the Cairns District Rugby League competition match at the Mossman showgrounds.
