Opportunity for tradies YOUNG tradespeople starting out in their career are being urged to apply for a unique bursary.

Mareeba’s Granite Masonic Lodge is offering a $500 bursary to four deserving male or female trade apprentices living within the shire.

Lodge master Carl Richardson said tradespeople were vital to Mareeba and the Lodge wanted to help young apprentices get a good start in life.

“When a fella starts off his trade, he usually doesn’t have a lot of cash floating around,” he said.

“An apprentice has a very good chance of staying in Mareeba and he might even keep going and start up his own business here.

“Australia as a whole badly needs tradesmen.”

Lodge treasurer John Collins (pictured) said there were too few bursaries available for tradespeople as opposed to more academically-gifted stu-

dents, prompting them to offer the bursary.

The bursary will pay four apprentices $500 for one year on the successful completion of their first year contract.

Apprentices must have at least completed Grade 10, live in Mareeba shire and be employed by a local trade business within the Mareeba shire.

To apply for the bursary, pick up an application form at The Express office at 186 Byrnes St, Mareeba any time from 8:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Applications close on April 4, with the winner selected by an independent panel.

The Express Carl Portella announced the winners at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce lunch at the RSL last Wednesday. He said there had been over 25 entries this year since the comp kicked off in November.

“We’ve had more entries this year than ever before,” he said. “It’s terrific to see.”

11-year-old Milan Maloberti took out the top prize of $500 for his 1.62kg mango he found at his aunt Anna’s property in

Mutchilba. Second place and $300 went to Sarah Westwood and third place and $200 went to Weston Hilditch who could not be present at the prize giving.

Stephen Srhoj from Lindsay Rural said the competition was a great

way to support growers.

“It gives a competitive edge for the farmers,” he said. “And it’s good opportunity to support the agricultural industry and ensure its growth.”

The competition will back at the end of this year.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore is calling on the State and Federal Governments to make a commitment to invest and develop northern Australia by filling in the missing links of the inland highway.

“When you get a catastrophic flooding event as we had in Ingham, all of this stops – no food comes north, no product goes south. Far North Queensland is isolated from the rest of the world, simply by one road,” Cr Gilmore said.

“It’s simple. If we had a clean sheet of paper and we were starting from day one, surely we would look to ensuring we had resilient, robust and reliable access to and from the south to ensure the free flow of commerce and goods and services into and out of our region.”

The latest push is to weather proof and secure access to and from the region. The inland freight route is free from extreme tropical weather risks including flooding, cyclones and climate change.

An inland route that connects through to the Hann Highway, servicing eastern seaboard markets and ports would be more cost-effective infrastructure.

The State and Federal Governments have spent billions of dollars upgrading the Bruce highway which Councillor Gilmore says is not where people necessarily want to go.

“It takes us to the southeast corner of Queensland then down to Sydney and Melbourne - the long way around,” he said.

“Not only have we got

a road which is currently monumentally incapable, it blocks the free flow of traffic and commerce, but to the greater extent for the free flow of traffic and commerce to the southern states it takes them 1000 km out of their way,” he said.

“It is about the development of northern Australia, that is where we are at, and the Bruce Highway isolating us from the rest of Queensland, our capital and the functions of Government.”

These impacts hold back the capacity of the region to contribute to the state and national economies. “It’s time we resolved that by ensuring that the inland route beginning from Weipa, coming down through Mareeba, Ootann, the Hann and further south

- that has got to be a very high priority for Government both State and Federal,” Cr Gilmore said.

Councillor Gilmore said he was pleased the Government has recognised the importance of the completion of the sealing of the Hann Highway. “It’s like links in a chain. That link will be sealed, and that section of the road will be good. But the Ootann Road and the section from Torrance Creek south are the weak links,” he said.

“We have to focus on those, so we have a complete chain.”

“It’s a fairly simple formula but needs the Government’s attention. The Government needs to start focussing their minds on what is important to people in far north Queensland,” he concluded.

Owen Byrnes ahead in the polls for Div 6 Owen Byrnes gained the majority of the votes in Saturday’s by-election for Tablelands Regional Council’s Division 6.

It’s not quite cut and dry but with a large majority of the votes, Owen Byrnes is likely to be the winning candidate from Saturday’s by-election in Tablelands Regional Council’s Division 6.

Councillor Bronwyn Voyce resigned from the position in January, leaving a gap around the table to be filled and locals living in the predominantly farming division of Tolga, Kairi, Walkamin and Tinaroo answered by voting for one of their own.

Mr Byrnes, the 53-yearold owner of Byrnes Earthmoving took the lead in the race from the start but said he didn’t want to be “too confident”.

“We might not know for a few weeks,” he said.

“But I’m quietly confi-

dent.”

Mr Byrnes has local politics in his blood as the son of late ex-Atherton councillor Keith Byrnes whose cousin Ray Byrnes was also the mayor of Eacham Shire.

Straight-talking and passionate about the community, Mr Byrnes said previously some locals have lost faith in their council and he wishes to be a part of restoring that. But his main focus, he said, will be to get stuck in to looking at the expenditure of the council.

“Council’s don’t have any money, we know that,” he said. “Which is why I want to be involved in how it is spent. 70 per cent of what they do is civil engineering which is what my business is all about, so I feel that I could bring a lot of that experience to the table.”

Division 6 has been at the centre of a recent spate of drama as residents living in the division have questioned the council on two separate occasions over rates charges.

Mr Byrnes said he will be analysing the situation when he gets into position but locals are hoping the new representation will be the missing link between them and the council with repeated calls for more communication and transparency about decisionmaking and operation.

Mr Byrnes wanted to congratulate the other nominees.

“They were all of a really high standard and I think everyone did really well,” he said.

Mr Byrnes was one of six candidates in the race for the position. By the end of the weekend he held 42 per cent of the vote, while

former member of Shane Knuth’s office Kate Yeoman was sitting in second place with 27 per cent of the vote. Her state government experience was clearly an attractive prospect for many voters, but perhaps the fact she lived outside of the division was the reason she was not ultimately more popular for those in Division 6.

Tolga cafe owner Josh Wallace was running in third place and proved that despite his youth, he was a strong contender for the job. Clearly a passionate community advocate, Mr Wallace likely has a bright future in politics ahead of him.

David McConnell, Allan Marcic and Darryl Drury made little impact on the voters claiming just 5 per cent of the votes each by the end of the weekend.

Married with three

grown-up children and two grand-children, Mr Byrnes said he is ready to reduce the work load of his business and step up into the job of councillor for the remaining two years of the term.

Mr Byrnes’ ancestors first arrived on the Tablelands 130 years ago. There have been six generations of his family living in Division 6 and through his construction company he is well known and respected within the community.

He previously said he has spent the past month reading up on the rules and regulations a councillor must follow and has been meeting with a vast number of the community.

If elected he will be withdrawing his offer to supply the council with earthmoving equipment through his business for the occasional plant hire.

Ex-premier home for relay

Exactly one year after it began its journey at Buckingham Palace in London, the Queen’s Commonwealth baton passed through the Tablelands.

From Ravenshoe through to Kuranda the baton was carried by some of our most honourable and deserving Tablelanders last week, helping to transport it to the Gold Coast for the start of the Commonwealth Games on April 4.

Former Atherton State High School captain and former Premier of Queensland Peter Beattie was part of the entourage that brought the baton to the area, saying it was a great opportunity for him to return back to his home town.

“The baton is about develping community spirit and involving the community and you really don’t get a better spirit in the sense of community than you do on the Tablelands,” he said.

“Growing up here, the

Queen’s Baton never went through when I was a kid, so it is really puting the Tablelands on the map. Every one of the TV crews that have come here and are following us, the whole of the commonwealth, there are 71 nations and territories watching.”

Mr Beattie is the Chairman of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation.

On Tuesday evening he attended a baton celebration held at Atherton’s Merrilands Hall along with

close to 400 locals.

He said the relay was a great chance to honour some prominent members of the community.

“It gives our local heroes a chance,” he said.

“They were selected through a process that was independent of the organising committee and they’re really good people. As a result of that they’re a role model for someone else.”

Members of the public lined the streets and local schools got involved in the baton buzz as the baton

passed through the towns of Ravenshoe, Atherton, Tolga, Mareeba and Kuranda.

Sonya Alba-Miller was one of the feature batonbearers for Mareeba.

She was on a high after running down the main street being cheered on by the crowds.

“It was amazing!” she said afterward. “It was awesome. I didn’t expect so many people to be out there. It was such an amazing experience. Everyone involved was awesome.”

Cynthia’s commitment to Mareeba

New member for Cook Cynthia Lui reassured attendees of last week’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon that she would be dedicated to meeting the needs of the people in Mareeba.

Concerns over Ms Lui’s commitment to the town have been raised due to her links to Torres Strait Island and the far north’s indigenous communities.

But the Labor member put those concerns to rest last Wednesday at the RSL as she spoke about the issues affecting the people in Mareeba and how she plans to tackle them.

“I understand the complex nature of Cook,” she said.

“It is vast and diverse in the issues we experience throughout the region. The

issues in one area are not going to be the same as the issues in another. But I am interested in Mareeba.

“Cook is not an electorate where one size fits all. I want to look at possible solutions for everyone in this electorate.”

It’s only been a month since Ms Lui was sworn in to office, but she said she is already getting a strong handle on this part of her electorate and what her constituents want.

“I am interested in building the Mareeba that you’re interested in,” she said. “I acknowledge the strong agricultural sector you have here. I want to look at ways we can future develop and grow that industry.

“Health is something I am also really passionate about - quality health and education.”

Ms Lui said she felt

secure knowing she was working with a government that was going to “listen to my concerns” after securing a visit from Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles to Mareeba late last year.

She went on to talk about some of her campaign promises and also the issues that she gleaned from being on the campaign trail in the lead up to the election.

“The CT scanner was approved and the ambulance station and staff accommodation,” she said.

“Employment was also a big one that kept coming up during my campaign.

“It’s about creating opportunities. We need to look at skilling our workforce but we need to have the right industries in Mareeba.”

Ms Lui said communication was the key to mov-

ing the region forward and she encouraged her constituents to speak up and voice their concerns.

“I will never know what it’s like in Mareeba, so I will depend on you to tell me what I can build upon to do better in my position,” she said.

“I need you as much as you need me to push for the needs of the people in Mareeba. I need an open dialogue. I’m interested in knowing about your issues and knowing about your needs. I need to sit with you and hear about what’s important to you.

“What you bring to the table is what we will see grow and it will only grow from a working partnership.

“I am here to work with Mareeba. I am here to work with you. I will make sure I am as accessible as I can be.”

KAP pushes for water diversion

KAP Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and State Member for Hill Shane Knuth have combined forces in applying renewed pressure to get the North Johnstone Transfer through after the recent floods in Far North Queensland.

Mr Katter said it would be remiss not to implement proactive infrastructure to lessen the impact of flooding while also filling up our water supply.

“Despite all the rain, the Tinaroo Dam is only 70 per cent full,” Mr Katter said.

“The wet season is over and there’s a lot of doubt whether there will be enough water to take us through to next Christmas. If that water had been diverted to the Johnstone into Tinaroo, there is every likelihood the dam would

now be full and the tens of millions of dollars of damage would not have occurred.

“Mr Knuth and I will be dramatically ramping up the pressure to get the North Johnstone Transfer underway, which was always in the original design plan for Lake Tinaroo.

“We need a double weir because the interest of the farmers of North Johnstone need to be looked after too.

To be effective there might be a bit of a balancing pond to be acquired, but we are not making things too complicated, it’s very simple – a little tiny ditch 3km long,” Mr Katter said.

Mr Knuth said he has already raised the issue with the Premier and argued that the project could not only save millions of dollars on flood mitigation,

but also provide water stability for all users in Lake Tinaroo in a cost effective way – essentially hitting two birds with one stone.

“We have already raised the issue with the Premier and have been lobbying the Natural Resource Minster,” he said.

“The reality is with the way we’re going it will be 100 years before they’ll commit to build another dam and in this circumstance we can crack two birds with the one stone, saving millions of dollars of flood mitigation and destruction in the Innisfail region and provide water security for all users in Lake Tinaroo. The reality is to construct and upgrade a bridge costs up to $30m – surely $20m for North Johnstone transfer is not much too ask for,”

Community pulls together

When Speewah local Brad Martin was diagnosed with cancer last year, the last thing on his mind was paying his mortgage.

But when the bank started calling, he felt pressured to return to work – just one week after finishing a second round of chemotherapy and just a few months after a major operation to have his oesophagus removed.

Hearing about his struggle, neighbours Mick Dowling and Tamara Kotzur decided to pull the community together and help him out. A week later they had managed to raise nearly $12,000 in prizes for an auction event to be held this weekend.

“He would do the same for anyone else,” said Mick who owns and runs Farmall in Speewah and lives next door to Brad and his wife Paula.

“These guys do a lot for other people and it’s just a pay it forward situation.

We’re in a position where we could call on favours so we thought why not.”

Brad was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in July last year after having trouble swallowing.

An aggressive tumour was growing so fast that doctors started chemotherapy the day after his diagnosis. In December he underwent a 12-hour operation to have his oesophagus removed and a second round of chemo followed this year.

Father of four and grandfather of five Brad turned 46 the same day he was operated on. He was told by doctors to take extensive time off to recover, but financially that was not an option.

“He shouldn’t have gone back to work now but we couldn’t afford not to,” said wife Paula who is a full time carer for their youngest child Matthew.

“Banks don’t want to stretch it any longer, they’ll just start proceedings they’ve told us.”

Funds raised from this weekend’s auction should buy Brad a few more months to stay home.

Dimbulah clinic hours fall short of expectations While Dimbulah may have a brand new “State of the Art” Primary Health Care Clinic, built last year at a cost of 4.6 million dollars of taxpayers’ money, the current opening hours of 5 hours a day/25 hours per week from 8am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 3.00pm, closed weekends and public holidays, falls way short of the business and farming community’s expectations and needs. Dimbulah is mainly a farming business community with workers committed from 6am to 6pm 7 days a week during peak time. Business and Farm workers who need to attend the Health Clinic can’t even go there during their lunch hour as the Clinic is closed from 11.30am1.30pm. The 2 local schools are also hampered by the current opening hours with teaching staff on duty from 8am to 3pm. Tourists and visitors to the area are also negatively affected. It seems that when Dimbulah’s new clinic was built there was no consultation with the community with the current opening hours put in place by CHHHS and cannot be changed by the Dimbulah DON. To add to the community’s dilemma, whenever the DON has an RDO once a month, is away sick, or out in the community attending to elderly and ill patients, no replacement is sent to fill in and keep the doors open - “due to budget restraints.”

It’s a huge disappointment to Queenslanders that their investment in a Primary Health Care facility purpose built to deliver essential services is open a maximum of 5 hours/5 days a week.

Transparency at council is questionable I would like to take issue with Mayor Paronella who claims that TRC is one of the most transparent councils in Queensland. How does he form this opinion?

Is there such a scale? Of course there isn’t!

However on the contrary. The very reason the TRC is in the Rates predicament is because of the Mayor’s apparent disdain for ratepayers. Had he been fair dinkum at the original meeting with ratepayers and allowed free questions and answers these recent revelations would have been addressed way back in October last year.

Instead, the mayor imposed a gag on the councillors and staff and the most relevant senior officer,

The mayor responded partially to questions raised in a ten page blurb but again, in his usual condescending and ambiguous manner. Of course the most important question remained unanswered - that concerning the reduction of the Minimum General Rate.

The mayor’s unwillingness to engage with concerned ratepayers in an open manner has not only infuriated ratepayers but by now must be frustrating and possibly angering his fellow councillors as well. The time has come for councillors who don’t agree with his press statements and his erroneous, premature and misleading “facts” to make a stand in the boardroom and to preserve their own integrity, come out publicly in opposition to his behavior.

Good and decent councillors should not be dragged through the mud just to save the mayor’s public persona. As for transparency, well all I can say in conclusion to the Mayor is that “you are so transparent that we can all see straight through you.”

Outrage at council rates error Ratepayers are outraged by the Mayor now blaming the rates debacle on a system error rather than human error. Who is he protecting?

Here are a few facts that ratepayers should be aware of: FACT - “systems” are only as good as the operator & data entered into the

system. Blaming the system is like blaming the knife for stabbing someone.

FACT - the Minimum General Rate errors were reported to the Finance Manager in September 2017.

This manager has since quit leaving the rest of us to clean up the mess. Why would the finance manager resign if the system is to blame?

FACT - this chaotic mess is ENTIRELY the fault of humans. The initial errors & subsequent fiasco have all been caused & perpetuated by people at TRC. FACT - The only reason the TRC budget is not impacted is because Cat F&G were made to pick up the tab.

FACT – The 15% rates cap to Cat F&G cost council $450,000 (so we were told), so it’s entirely reasonable to assume that the Minimum General Rate error has cost at the very least $450k.

FACT – Total revenue for TRC is $64 million.

“Less than approximately 1% distributional effects across the total revenue” equates to $640,000. It sounds totally harmless when the Mayor doesn’t put a dollar value on it.

FACT - Ratepayers have repeatedly asked TRC to clarify the Mayor’s statements & the details of the review, but to date TRC have consistently dodged answering any questions.

FACT - Without answers from Council, ratepayers are justified in thinking there is a cover-up. Refusing to be open and upfront with information is tantamount to concealment.

Confidence in the Mayor could have been restored, had he acted in the best interest of ratepayers from the get-go instead of trying to save himself.

A Mareeba woman suffering from stage 4 cancer has turned to politicians in a bid to get a life-saving drug made more affordable.

Stephanie Bell, 62, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994. She has beaten the disease four times but it has now spread to her bones, including her spine. The future is uncertain for her, but a drug trial has bought her more time and is stopping the cancer from spreading further.

Now she wants others in her situation to be afforded the same opportunity.

Ribociclib and Palbociclib need to be added to the Pharmaceuticals Benefits Scheme (PBS) so that people like Stephanie can have just one part of their difficult journey made easier,” he said.

“I have great faith – I believe that the good lord is looking after me and my amazing husband and children keep me going,” she said. “My heart goes out to anyone else out there going through this that doesn’t have access to these drugs.

Farming into the future

A Mareeba forum next month will arm farmers with tools to take their agricultural enterprise to the next level.

The inaugural Efficient Farming Forum, a joint initiative between Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and Northern Gulf Resources Management Group, will be held at the Mareeba International Club on 27 April.

The day-long event features a jam-packed program covering off on the key issues facing farmers’ in their goal to be profitable and sustainable long term – electricity, markets, innovation, weather, diversification and land man-

agement.

Mareeba Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association chairman and Biboohra mango grower Joe Moro said management was critical to a farmer’s long-term success on the land.

“Whether you grow tree crops, farm broadacre crops or fatten beef, keeping abreast of the latest technologies, innovation and management practices is vital,” Mr Moro said.

“Farming is no longer about putting a crop in the ground and waiting for it to grow – there is so much more to the story.

“We have pulled together

a great list of presenters, many of whom are leaders in their respective fields, to deliver the tools we as farmers, and land managers, need to be profitable and sustainable long-term.”

The 2018 National Australia Bank Lions Youth of the Year Zone Final was hosted by the Mareeba Club on Saturday. Winning Club contestants representing Mareeba, Atherton, Yungaburra Lioness, Malanda, Milla-Milla, Ravenshoe, and Yungaburra, competed to progress to the District Finals to be held in Townsville.

Clean Up Australia Day was another success with the Mareeba Lions and friends venturing into the long grass up and down the Barron River Herberton Street crossing. A ute load of rubbish which included a shopping trolley, tractor tyre, glass, steel, and of course plenty of plastic was removed from the river and esplanade. It was hot and steamy but participants enjoyed a sausage sizzle and cool drink afterwards.

A weekend of transport nostalgia is in store for Tablelanders next month when the Cairns and District Historic Club bring their Nor’Easter Hub Meet to Atherton and Mareeba.

For a few hours on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1 keen car enthusiasts can take a close look at the display of rare and unique cars for free.

“Over 100 people will be congregating for

the event and local businesses benefit greatly from this,” said Cheryl Emmerson from the club.

“The event travels all over the Tablelands encompassing Atherton, Malanda, Peeramon, Mareeba and in-between.”

The event will feature clubs from all over Queensland including the Jaguar Car Club of NQ, Mackay Vintage Motor Club, Townsville

Veteran, Vintage and Historic Motor Club, Clermont Motoring Club Inc, and the Qld Historic Motoring Council from Brisbane.

Some of the cars on display include 1913 Fiat Tip Zero, Three 1925 to 1935 Austin 7's, 1965 XP Falcon 2 Door Sedan, 1955 FJ Holden, 1970 MK1 Ford Capri Coupe, 1984 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit and a 1953 MG TF Roadstar.

Amateur boxing tournament hits Dimbulah

Champion amateur boxers Kurtis Bryde and Matthew Carroll will be boxing in Dimbulah this weekend.

A big night of boxing entertainment will be taking place in Dimbulah this Saturday featuring some of the regions best fighters.

Bryde’s Boxing Gym is hosting an amateur boxing tournament at the Dimbulah Memorial Hall that will feature 10-15 fights with boxers travelling from as far as Townsville and Rockhampton to take part.

One of the main feature events on the night will be between Mareeba’s Jennie Gugala and Dimbulah’s Akia Jose, with the winner going on to fight someone from Cairns gym Hit Pit. “We’re expecting

around 200 people to turn up and watch,” said organiser Wayne Bryde.

“These events are really popular. Boxing has got a great following on the Tablelands.”

The main junior bout of the night will be between current Australian Champion in the 48kg division and product of Bryde’s gym Matthew Carroll fighting current Qld champion Brendan East.

Current Australian Champion in the 51kg division Kurtis Bryde will also be fighting on the night.

During the interval there will be an auction of signed posters and a club fundraising raffle.

“We focus on the basics of boxing,” said Wayne.

“Train hard, fight easy.

Jerome Gully led The Bulls to a showpiece win over The Highlanders in the Mareeba Basketball Association on Thursday night.

Sinking post-buzzer free-throws in a nail-biting 57-55 victory, Gully capped a starring role in an epic slugfest.

They finished the game with 26 points on 3 triples, 11 free throws, Gully was wet throughout, closing proceedings with a pair from the line, after Brandon Osborne’s remonstrations with referees cost his side a technical foul and, ultimately, competition points.

The upstart Highlanders, outpacing all-comers in the lead-up, found their

equal, with Jeremy Mackay and Ricaydon Wason joining Gully in a caustic response to the MBA teentakeover.

Gully signalled intentions early for the Bulls, netting reliably from deep in the first quarter, on the way to scoreboard leads at every break. Regardless, a late, fourth-quarter surge from the Highlanders saw totals locked at 53-53 with three minutes to play.

Declan Ebner was clutch for the Highlanders, capping a slick-passing return from injury with the game-tying mid-range shot. Jake Priestly was another standout, punching above his weight to provide presence for the undersized Highlanders.

Ultimately, the Highlanders forfeited their ef-

forts. Looking to clinch the contest on a last-minute drive to the basket; the ball fell foul and the whistle was not forthcoming.

Osborne’s aggrieved complaints with the umpires led to free-throws for Gully. Clinical back-toback conversions from the man-of-the-match decided the duel.

A source, who wished to remain nameless, was pleased with the shift in power balance at the head of the MBA men’s division ladder, but warned that the result could prove an incentivising stimulus for The Highlanders. “(The Highlanders) were schooled to the physicality of a men’s league,” he said. “Yeah, they have athleticism and youth, but tonight they showed their

immaturity.

“For the first time, the shots weren’t falling and they were up against a team that could match them for stamina. You’d hope they learn from the result and the consequence of their reactions to the officials... come back stronger and complement their on-court skills with the maturity to capitalise and dominate.”

In other results, composed point guard Christie Perks led Fresh to a comfortable 50-39 win over the Red Devils.

The Barras triumphed 37-32 over The Stingrays.

With Tyson Tatti suffering a season-ending foot injury, Damien Musharrafs stepped into the void providing experience and scoring 13 points for the up and down Barras.

Derek Gardener turned in a season-best performance for the Barras, utilising his height and length for consistent rebounds and blocks. In a top-of-the-table showdown, Jeremy’s Guns asserted their dominance in the u18s league, overcoming a spirited showing from The Brick Squad.

Conceding a 53-48 defeat, the Brick Squad remained undeterred.

“We trailed by 13 at the half, rested our best guard more than we usually would, and still made it a one-possession game we’ll take that,” said Brick Squad coach, Liam Daly.

Cricket honour for Trish

Trish Spry has been honoured for her hard work and dedication within Mareeba’s women’s cricket.

A Mareeba lady synonymous with women’s cricket in the town will now be immortalised in the game forever after the CFN ladies cup was recently named after her.

Trish Spry said that having the cup named after her was “a nice reward” for all the work she put in getting women’s cricket up and running.

“It was a little bit selfish the reason that I did it, because I wanted to play,” she said.

“So that was my first initial reason to get it going and then I saw how rewarding it was for the people getting involved and that’s what kept it going was the excitement of all these peoples’ faces when they got out there and they hit a few runs or they bowled the ball straight for the first time. It was really rewarding for me.”

Trish grew up playing cricket as her parents owned Mareeba’s indoor cricket centre.

Last year she decided to see how much interest there would be for a women’s cricket team and

through word of mouth and social media over 70 women put their hand up wanting to have a go.

“It’s aimed at people that aren’t from a cricket background,” she said.

“You can play it, have a bit of fun and learn some skills, but everyone gets a go. Because we made the rules almost indoor cricket rules, every person goes out there and bats for four overs and if you get out you stay out there and you keep on batting. Proper cricket rules you’re out and you go and that can be really hard for someone new into the sport to find the enjoyment if you’re out the first ball.”

The popularity of the game has garnered the attention of not only other clubs in the Far North, but Cricket Queensland as well.

They are looking at the format implemented in Mareeba and how it is giving young girls an avenue into cricket.

“That’s the reason why CFN has got behind the whole ladies competition is because once the girls get to a certain age they can’t play in the comps anymore,” said Trish.

“So having this is a re-

ally good opportunity for the girls as they come up through the ranks. They might play in the boys comp until they’re 14 or 15, but this gives them somewhere else to go.”

Trish says the reason why it has been so popular in Mareeba has as much to do with the socialising through the game as it does the sport.

“The social side is good,” she said.

“It’s a different group of people all getting together with a common interest, a lot of the mums love it because it gives them time with other adults. All of them do sport with their kids, they’re always doing stuff for their kids, so this is for them. It’s been really really popular with mums.”

The Trish Spry Cup final is being played on Sunday, March 25 at Firth Park, Mareeba from 10am.

The Mareeba Ladies Team will be playing against Cairns team, Norths.

Trisha has also been invited by Queensland Cricket to attend the Queensland Bulls Presentation Night on March 29 in Brisbane, with all expenses paid for by paid for by Queensland Cricket.

Roosters 100 year celebrations while premiership winning players from the 1970’s handed out the jerseys before the main game.

The first grade Roosters had a high quality 28 to 20 win in perfect conditions at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium in Atherton.

It was clear that the

crowd had missed their rugby league during the off season and turned up in excellent numbers for the start of this historic 100th season.

A lot can be taken away from the match with ball handling and a lack of errors being the most surprising and satisfying at this

stage.

The performance of Atherton fullback Reece Munster was a highlight of the night with his willingness to take risks paying off brilliantly after some long cut out passes resulted in him getting the final assists for two late tries and a strong win.

In the curtain raiser Atherton’s reserve grade side had a great come from behind win 20 to 16 over Mareeba.

The Roosters will field a team in the Cairns District Rugby League nines tournament this coming Sunday at Jones Park, Mann Street Cairns.

Nasser bats to keep Atherton alive Atherton are holding their own at the halfway mark in the four-day Cricket Far North grand final match at Griffiths Park.

Mulgrave won the toss and sent Atherton in to bat on Saturday, looking to post a 1st innings result ahead of predicted rain.

Atherton's batsmen found the going very tough and could not get starts against Mulgrave's tight bowling. With the top four dismissed for 47, Paul Nasser coming in at number five dug in, and went on to put in a mammoth performance for Atherton, batting patiently through to stumps on day one.

Dan Parnell, battling a virus, showed grit and determination to support Nasser at the crease building a 58 run partnership.

Luke Parnell followed his brother's lead contributing to a 45 run partnership with Nasser.

Atherton closed day one 8-188 with Nasser 83 not out. Paul was adjudged caught behind on 87 with the score 192 early on day

two and the final wicket fell at 194.

Atherton worked hard to defend their total with disciplined bowling and an attacking field. The teams were evenly placed for much of the day until the bowlers broke through taking 3-4 to gain the advantage and keep the pressure on, dismissing Mulgrave for 137.

Wickets were shared between Seppe Barletta 4-30, Dan Parnell 3-28, Michael Salerno 2-37, Luke Parnell 1-29, while Paul Nasser 0-6 and Tom Boorman 0-5 kept their economy rate under 1.

Taking a lead of 57 in to the 2nd innings, Atherton are 1-22. The match continues 10am Saturday 24 March.
