Last drinks for RSL By Rebecca Wallis

A special weekend of fundraising for the McGrath Foundation was held in Yungaburra on July 21-22 which saw the town packed with fun and activities and covered in pink. Katie Tandy (pictured) joined in with dog Jimmy. MORE PICS P10.

It’s the end of an era for Mareeba as the town says goodbye to its RSL club after sub-branch members voted to close the business on Saturday morning. A meeting was held over the long weekend to vote on the future of the club after it ran into substantial financial difficulties with some reports claiming the business had been running at a loss for more than a few years. Members voted to close the doors immediately with stunned customers turned away after being told the business was no longer operating. The move comes after weeks of speculation in the town and now leaves four full time staff members and other casual staff without a job. President of the sub-branch Paul McGregor-Jones read out a statement after the meeting expressing his disappointment. “The Mareeba RSL subbranch has been notified that the members of the Mareeba RSL club have voted to close the club including the bistro, bar, cafe, gaming lounges and the cinema,” he said. “This is a significant loss to the local community and the club employees, however the sub-branch has been advised by the club committee it is not financially viable to continue operating. “The club committee has appointed a liquidator to finalise our standing employee’s entitlements and payments to the

creditors. “The sub-branch is disappointed to lose a popular community hub and will review its options in the near future.” He said the future of the Mareeba RSL Club was now in the hands of the liquidator. The Mareeba RSL sub-branch will continue as normal. Club president Tony Gray has only been part of the committee for a few months and said the business should have been shut months ago. “This committee has done all it can now to try and rectify the debt and we were able to act on a lot of it, but the major debt we couldn’t attack because the trade was not there,” he said. “Everyone around town has been doing bad. The club’s getting a bit tired and maintenance issues which probably turns people away a little bit as well, but what can you do? The theatre held its own and the new chef in here did a marvellous job.” Mr Gray said it was last minute legal advice that forced the closure. “We had some late legal advice that came through to us from outside influences stating that we must do this and that,” he said. “Major debtors weren’t calling us in and we were working with them to try and sort things out but in the end certain people have said enough’s enough and wouldn’t let us go ahead anymore.” He declined to reveal the size of the debt owed.

It’s just a job to Jess Paton but her passion and dedication to customer care have earned her a spot in Queensland’s top 20 Pharmacy Assistant of the Year Awards. Jess, 26, has worked at Mareeba’s Discount Drug store for nearly 10 years and on Friday will fly to Brisbane for judging for the next stage of the competition. She made the cut out of a whopping 750 state-wide nominations after her boss and friend Taralee Thies sent in a glowing endorsement. “Jess is one of those incredibly rare people you will meet in life, her zest and passion are truly awe inspiring,” she wrote. The letter moved Jess to tears but reflected her love of the job

that sees her often giving advice and guidance to her customers. “I always got taught by mum when you pick up the phone to make a smile and then you’ll sound really happy and that is what it comes down to with customer service,” she said. “It’s not always about oneon-one it could be about the happy face that gets you through the day. Not everyone walks in here for something magical, sometimes they’re walking in here because life’s pretty terrible.” As a state finalist Jess will now be in the running for the national finals which take place on the Gold Coast in October. Jess said the nomination is a great opportunity to promote a business and a job she loves. “So many people complain about customer service generally and it’s really nice to show 20 people that are totally passionate about it and love what they do and love pharmacy,” she said. “It’s very exciting.”

recreation space around the proposed new centre will create a focus for pro-social community activities. “Ordinary citizens will be able to come together through programs of engagement run at the centre and be close to specialised counselling, education and support as and when they need it,” Mr Russell said. “Engagement with a service will be quicker, less daunting and periods of hardship or trauma for families and children will be reduced. “This project will bring together all the services provided by Community Services Tablelands, Tablelands Community Housing and Women’s Health Queensland in Atherton into a one stop shop. “However, it will be a centre

for all of the Atherton Community; it will have the space and visual exposure to create community events such as family fun days, music, theatre, and art in the park, International food and multi-cultural events, space for storytelling and yarning and community gardens. “This facility will link into and extend the amenity of the precinct and we hope to work with our new neighbours the Atherton Library and Art Gallery, to create a focus for culture in Atherton and we will be able to attract more families and younger children into the precinct.” The centre will also bring a greater range of opportunities for volunteering, engage with parents and divert children away from out of home care.

$1.6m for community centre A new community centre for Atherton is a step closer to reality with the Palaszczuk Government delivering a $1.6 million funding commitment for Community Services Tablelands towards the proposed new Atherton Community Centre. Minister for Communities Coralee O’Rourke today (17 July) announced the funding commitment while visiting the existing Atherton Community Centre and highlighted how the Queensland Government is assisting the project to secure Australian Government funding through the Building Better Regions Fund. “We have committed $1.6 million to support Community Services Tablelands’ proposal,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “But for this new centre to

become a reality, we need Malcolm Turnbull and the Federal Government to match our funding dollar-for-dollar. “This development is a rare opportunity and needs support from both levels of government to become a reality.” The Palaszczuk Government has already provided Community Services Tablelands with a $250,000 grant to undertake full documented design, obtain all necessary planning approvals and secure land tenure. “We recognise that this process has created an exceptional building design that will provide a much-needed service in the right location for local residents,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “This project already has in place a Project Advisory Group (PAG) which has been instru-

mental in getting this initiative to this point. “This has included the securing of land tenure from the Tablelands Regional Council, the coordination of a high-quality consultant team to develop full documented design, and coordinating the appropriate development approvals.” The new community centre will have the goal of prevention of harm, which will allow service providers to have a much greater impact on proactive community development, linking in with other activities in the area such as the Atherton Library, skate park, tennis courts, scouts, girl guides, SES and fire and ambulance services. End of an era for Mareeba as RSL club closes its doors By Rebecca Wallis

The end of the RSL club in Mareeba has provoked a sombre mood across the town this week as locals fondly recall many an event and good times held within its Byrnes Street walls. Part of the local landscape since the second World War, what began as a way to support men and women that served or are serving in the defence force evolved into a popular entertainment venue.

“I’ve been coming here for 60 years,” said Pat Kerlin. “It’s a hell of a loss to the town. This is the best entertainment centre on the Tablelands.” Mareeba RSL club has a history of issues after it ran into financial difficulties around four years ago. A loan was taken out to keep the business afloat. A few months ago a new committee was elected to try and find a way to keep the club operating. A new chef was recently employed and the introduction of the Rising Sun Movie Theatre

was a popular drawcard. But on Saturday, July 21 Mareeba RSL club entered voluntary administration and closed its doors at around 11am leaving staff to go home and customers bewildered. Mr Kerlin is a member of the club and therefore sat through the Saturday morning meeting which saw a vote taken as to which way to proceed with the business. “What I’m cranky about is that the loan was made to fail in the first place because there wasn’t the business to repay it,”

he said. “I would like to have seen them go and get a good solicitor and go and challenge the loan in the first place. “A meeting like today called on a Saturday in the middle of a long weekend, it was set up to return a verdict.” Mareeba is not the only club to run into difficulties on the Tablelands with Atherton RSL closing its doors and Malanda RSL holding crisis meetings in recent weeks over its future.

Bicentennial Lakes plan to go ahead

Military event back for 2018 The Mareeba Military Muster is gearing up again for an exciting weekend of displays and memorabilia for the military enthusiast. The family-friendly event will be held again at the Turf Club on Fenwick Street on August 4-5. The Military Muster has been held annually at Ravenshoe since 2008 and two years ago was relocated to Mareeba proving to be very popular. The weekend brings together military enthusiasts and collectors from all over North Queensland with displays of military vehicles under the trees at the racecourse and memorabilia in the covered areas were popular with the public. Vehicles never seen on the Tableland before and sourced from the Australian Armour & Artillery Museum at Cairns will complement the event. People will again be supporting the event from Brisbane, Townsville and Cooktown as well as other FNQ enthusiasts. It is a family orientated affair and includes an amusement area for the children. The Mareeba location lends

itself well to the event considering its rich WWII association when from July 1942 to May 1943 the United States Army Air Force decided to establish a new advanced operational base here. Mareeba became far north Queensland’s main operational air base. Thousands of American servicemen of seven heavy bomber squadrons from the US 19th and 43rd Bombardment groups made Mareeba their home. During this time they launched missions against Japanese targets in New Guinea and throughout the South West Pacific Area. Three Australian military divisions also occupied the Tablelands from 1943 to 1945. Further, the Mareeba Shire Council and the Tablelands Regional Council promote their respective Anzac Trails across the area. People who wish to bring military vehicles, items to showcase, swap or display throughout the weekend should contact event representatives Michael on 0429 60 1942 or Martin on 40868162. Additional information can also be found at Mareeba Military Muster Facebook site.

Plans can now go ahead for the development and beautification of Mareeba’s Bicentennial Lakes after councillors voted last week to approve the draft master plan. Earlier this year the public were invited to have their say on the proposed development which includes picnic areas, an amphitheatre and gardens. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the Bicentennial Lakes has the potential to be a key focal area and visitor attraction for Mareeba. “After receiving feedback from the community, it was made quite clear that locals want to see the revitalisation of Bicentennial Lakes become a more user-friendly space for recreation and fitness,” he said. “It won’t happen overnight, a project of this scale will take several years to deliver. However the council and the community now have a clear vision to restore the Lakes back to a picturesque parkland for families and tourists to enjoy.” Cr Gilmore said that while no funding has been allocated in this year’s budget for the pro-

ject, council is actively seeking suitable grant opportunities and is encouraging local community organisations to get involved. “We are inviting local service groups to get involved, take ownership and contribute to the beautification of the Lakes,” he said. “It will all be part of a jigsaw puzzle. Whatever these service groups wish to do, whether they want to create a garden, put in a BBQ, a playground or seating, will be designed to fit in with the master plan.” Cr Gilmore said this project has been on the table since the 1980s and he was excited to see the master plan adopted by council today. “It’s been a long and complex process. A number of local service groups including Mareeba Lions Club, Rotary, Bendigo Bank and the Chamber of Commerce all got together and initiated the project over several years and I am delighted to be where we are today. “The potential is only limited by your imagination,” Cr Gilmore concluded.

Ootann Road work underway Almost $6 million worth of works to progressively seal sections of Ootann Road are well underway, with stage one almost complete. Package 1 of the project which is funded under the Northern Australia Beef Roads Program includes the extension and widening of the existing causeway at the Sandy Tate River by 37m followed by 1.36km of 9m wide two coat bitumen sealed road. Councillor Gilmore recently visited the site on Ootann Road and was delighted to see the

works being carried out. “The upgrade will improve access to and from the region, generating immediate productivity efficiencies for agriculture, beef, mining and tourism industries and their suppliers,” he said. “I am very pleased the Government has recognised the importance of the need to seal the missing links of the Ootann Road. We are extremely grateful to the Commonwealth for their funding commitment.” Package two is scheduled to be carried out early next year.

Kuranda road redevelopment JMAC Constructions began works on the long-awaited redevelopment of Therwine Street in Kuranda on Monday. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the project would improve the streetscape and correct footpath deficiencies that have manifested over time as the village has evolved as a tourist destination and visitor numbers increased. “The project forms part of Council’s ongoing commitment

to systematically upgrade infrastructure to adequately service visitor demand and enhance Kuranda’s appeal as a worldclass tourist destination,” he said. Construction will commence on the lower Therwine Street on, with works expected to continue for a period of 12 weeks, weather dependent. Works on upper Therwine Street are anticipated to commence in mid/late October 2018.

Dimbulah’s only supermarket will cease trading this Friday.

Loss for Dimbulah as supermarket closes By Rebecca Wallis

It’s a sad week for Dimbulah as the town’s supermarket closes its doors this Friday leaving locals no choice but to shop in Mareeba. Dimbulah Foodworks owner Debbie Jordan said they had been and still were actively looking for a buyer for the businesses but if no one put in an offer as of Friday, July 27, the shop will cease trading. Mrs Jordan said the store, which also includes a newsagency and lotto services, had struggled since a recent refurbishment closed the business for six weeks. Mrs Jordan has owned the business for four years with husband Shane. Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown said the news was devastating to a town that was already struggling.

“It’s really sad and not good for the town,” he said. “The town is not thriving. It’s struggling. It’s not only Foodworks, it’s other businesses in town. What the reasons are I don’t know.” Cr Brown previously got behind a fight to keep the town’s kindy open after numbers dropped cutting off vital funding. He said the loss of the town’s supermarket would have a ‘flow on effect’. “It doesn’t entice people if you want people to move into the area so the likes of the kindy and the school suffer,” he said. “It’s very clouded for the future of the town.” Dimbulah resident Gaye Taylor said locals need to get behind their town’s businesses and shop locally. “This loss will affect everyone, especially the most vulnerable in our community, the elderly

and families on low incomes,” she said. “Locals should be supporting local business in their town. Shopping locally is the best way to keep money and jobs circulating - it’s the only way for regional towns like Dimbulah to survive.” Mrs Taylor said Dimbulah had already survived the loss of the tobacco industry which saw three major banks leave the town resulting in locals shopping elsewhere. “While they did their banking they fuelled and serviced their vehicles, bought their groceries, bread and meat which all had a negative effect on our town,” she said. “We pushed hard to establish Bendigo Community Bank in Dimbulah to try and encourage locals not to travel outside of our town and shop locally. Since the Community Bank was es-

Wheelbarrow Race to alternate direction

By Rebecca Wallis

It’s been a contentious issue in recent years – which way should the Great Wheelbarrow race start and finish? Organisers made the controversial move a few years ago to reverse the direction the race and start it in Chillagoe instead of Mareeba. It raised some eyebrows and ultimately divided racegoers and fans, leading the committee to come to the recent decision of alternating between the two. “It shares everything with all the towns equally,” said chair of the committee and Mareeba Shire councillor Nipper Brown. “That was one of the long term plans when we started from Chillagoe. We two years from Chillagoe to get it down pat because we’d done so many from Mareeba.” Next year’s race will be held

tablished in 2005 the town has had to lobby strongly for a new Primary Health Care facility to meet the needs of the community who required essential primary health services.”

Health services on the agenda By Rebecca Wallis

Health care services in the Mareeba region was the topic of discussion at the latest Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at the Leagues Club last Wednesday. Health care hierarchy from Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Services (CHHHS), Primary Health Network (PHN) and Mareeba Hospital were in attendance along with Mareeba Shire councillors and members of the Save the Mareeba Hospital Services group. The luncheon gave representatives from both CHHHS and PHN the opportunity to update the public on recent developments to health services in the region including the pending installation of the CT scanner and endoscopy services and the future of primary health care. Elisa Capaldi from North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) said various avenues are being pursued after the Federal Government Department of Health committed $2 million funding last year to improve primary health care in Mareeba. Ms Capaldi said that the ideas being investigated include expanding GP care in Mareeba, looking at community-based nurses, finding ways to increase the number of patients that see a GP rather than presenting to the

emergency department of the hospital and utilising nurse practitioners. Ms Capaldi said they were working on proposals for tendering the GP service that is based at the hospital and currently being run by Amaroo Medical. CHHHS CEO Clare Douglass said chemo and dialysis were not off the table for the hospital. “We understand you want those two services but I’m not going to guarantee today that you will get those services,” she said. “We’re going to do more planning and see what is the next service for Mareeba. It may be those or it may be general surgery. We have to do each one well before we get on to the next one.” Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said the progress of health in the region was a very topical issue. “The chamber has been trying to get some good outcomes working with some of the community groups that have been advocating for better services,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity to find out where we’re going with the hospital and local services. There seems to be a lot of questions that want to be asked and answered and hopefully this helped to alleviate some of the concerns and it went one step further by showing there’s a strong desire to make sure we have a positive image for the hospital for the future.”

Tensions rise over doctor shortage Accusations were levelled at Save the Mareeba Hospital Services Group last week at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon which saw health officials offer updates on the progress of the region. As the extent of a doctor shortage in the town was confirmed, Mareeba Hospital Medical Superintendant Tjaart Grobbelar claimed it was the actions of the Save the Mareeba Hospital Services group that was hindering the recruitment of more trained professionals. “In 2016 and 2017 I had to show doctors the door, that I couldn’t recruit because we didn’t have positions for them,” he said. “Then last year I have had doctors saying we don’t want to go to Mareeba anymore because the hospital is going to close. “That is because of that initiative Save the Hospital. It’s the rumour.”

Members of the group refuted the claims, saying their aims were only ever to improve the health services in the town. “We’re not about scare mongering people,” said Denis McKinley. “We’re about getting the best services we can. You can say what you want about doctors coming here but the doctors will come if the services are provided that we need in this community.” Mr McKinley said he was disappointed with the comments and said he hoped some of the services that have been talked about would be implemented soon. “We want to see stuff on the ground happening,” he said. “It seems to be catch up all the time and I think PHN need to put things in place now. But we’re not going away and we’re going to intensify our approach. We’ll have another public meeting no doubt if things don’t progress.”

Biboohra school’s winning garden By Rebecca Wallis

A school garden that has been a labour of love has come out on top again at this year’s Mareeba District Garden Awards. Biboohra State School won the best vegetable garden award this year for the first time, beating off stiff competition from seasoned gardeners across the shire.

The eclectic collation of edible delights is driven and cared for by school cleaner Jill Robinson. “I think it’s really important for them because if you can grow your own food you’ll never be hungry,” said Jill who tends to the plants all over the school in her spare time voluntarily. “A lot of people don’t have access to this and it’s really good for them to see what they eat and where it comes from.”

The veggie patch is integrated into the children’s learning by looking at how to grow certain plants and cooking what they have cultivated. For three years the school has featured heavily in the winnings at the Garden Awards and this year they also collected a second place in the People’s Choice and second place in the best School Garden category. All of the winnings get invested back into the school.

This year a new fruit tree was purchased to be added to their growing orchard. “It’s good for the school because it puts us on the map,” said Jill who nominated the school for the awards. “It’s about letting people know we are here and that being a rural school out of town you get to do different things. We’re lucky having that. If we were in town we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

Homelessness Week 2018 Ending homelessness together #HW2018 Mareeba Community Housing Company is encouraging all residents and businesses across Mareeba and the Tablelands to be observant not only during the week of 6th August to 10th August, 2018 but throughout the year. Homelessness in rural towns many believe is a myth, only something that happens in the cities. The fact is homelessness impacts on our lives, our communities and wellbeing.

This year the theme is... “ENDING HOMELESSNESS TOGETHER”

Waste services gets upgraded

The old waste transfer station.

A brand new building means a more efficient service.

The upgrade to Tablelands Regional Council’s wet waste facilities at the Atherton Transfer Station has been completed ahead of schedule. “We’ve been using the upgraded facility since 8 July,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. “The old facility had reached the end of its life and needed renewal. “It meant that we had an opportunity to make our waste collection and disposal far more efficient and cost effective.”

The upgrade has increased storage capacity and given a bigger loading area for wet waste (red-lidded bins). The bigger work area means the time taken to load the Springmount landfill trucks is significantly reduced. “It’s especially handy when the landfill is closed for public holidays and we need to store extra waste,” said Cr Paronella. The upgraded facilities are clearly visible when you first enter the transfer station.

Mayor Tom Gilmore with local nomads Des and Maureen Lane.

Council releases safety guide for community MAREEBA Shire Council has released a community awareness guide, aimed at keeping locals and tourists safe when exploring the shire. Funded by the Queensland Government’s Get Ready program, the resource includes tips on how to prepare for different types of weather events, driving on unfamiliar road conditions and how to deal with other haz-

ards that may occur when travelling around the Shire. Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford welcomed the release of Council’s guide. “Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) works closely with residents, councils, other government agencies, community groups and businesses to encourage and help everyone to

“Get Ready”.” Mayor Tom Gilmore said the safety initiative was the first of its kind in the Far North. “Mareeba has a wonderful reputation with the travelling public and we want visitors to enjoy a safe and memorable experience in the Shire,” Cr Gilmore said. “Council saw the need for such a resource and together with the Queensland

Government and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, I think we have produced a vital resource which could ultimately save someone’s life. I would like to thank Council staff for their contribution and of course to the Queensland Government for funding this project,” he said. The guides will be available at selected outlets and on Council’s website.

THE countdown is on to one of the years most anticipated sporting and social events, with the Mareeba Turf Club’s Annuals race day less than two months away. Saturday September 15 is the day and on track racing will keep the keen punters on their toes with a five race program, while off track the live entertainment will

After showcasing his musical talent to the country, Clint has been in hot demand performing all over the region. Don’t miss your chance to see a local star performing live in his home town. Clint will kick off at 9.30pm with the entertainment continuing late into the night.

Get fit and have fun FITNESS and fun will be back again at the Bicentennial Lakes on Sunday August 26 this year for the annual Mareeba Rotary Fun Run and Walk. Now in it’s third year, the event continues to grow with families enjoying a morning out while being active and enjoying all the lakes have to offer. Organisers are hoping for more than 100 competitors, who will be able to race in 5km’s men’s, women’s and

junior divisions. The fun run will kick off from the Lakes at the clearing just behind Mareeba Swimming Pool before going on a cross-country adventure. Put it in your calendars and keep an eye out on the Rotary Mareeba Facebook page for updates and more information. The event will also double as a fundraiser for the Mareeba Friends of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation.

Bike crazy family attempts Cardiac Challenge fundraiser When Fred Blakey’s cardiologist picked up a heart valve problem due to a rheumatic heart condition more than 30 years ago, he knew he was facing some serious work on his heart over the coming years. “Dad had several heart related procedures over the years, his first aortic valve replacement was done over 30 years ago in Brisbane. The second was done in Townsville and then a large abdominal aneurysm was repaired in 2013 in Cairns Hospital”, his daughter Allison Sciani said. This motivated his bike crazy family to don their helmets and jump on their bikes for the annual Mt Franklin Cardiac Challenge. We love that through the fundraising done by the participants of the Cardiac Challenge less people will have to leave their loved ones and the district in order to have certain procedures. “I always love a challenge, so after completing a Get Out and Get Active course for ladies and bikes earlier this year, I decided it was time to do the Cardiac Challenge, Allison said. David, one of my boys was in on the idea and then Nathan decided he’d jump back on the bike after a serious break to his femur in a bike accident last year. Not to be outdone by her brothers, Katia decided that she would join the team after we had the loss of Dad – our father and grandfather – on June 4 this year. As our support crew, we have my husband and their father Henry, making sure we are looked after along the way. The boy’s wives will most likely be registered as volunteers and so we have the entire family throwing their weight

David, Allison, Nathan and Katia Sciani. behind this Challenge. Excited great grandchildren will also be waiting in Cooktown ready to cheer on the family when they roll in on the last day. “Mum always accompanied Dad for the treatment as we were all very busy with our work and young families, however it was always hard on her as there was no support for her. “I did accompany her on the second valve replacement that

Speedway lights up after dark

Mareeba Speedway ran its first meet under lights at the weekend, with the new installations lighting up the track and bringing exciting atmosphere to the races. 17-year-old dairy farmer Slatah Walmsley (inset) travelled all the way from Millaa Millaa to compete his commodore in the Super Sedans taking home first prize.

Dad required, which she really appreciated but family support is the key to a good recovery with this big stuff. “Dad did know that we were doing the Cardiac Challenge and was very appreciative that we were able to give back to the Hospital that had given him so much in treatment over the years on his behalf.” The Sciani family is part of the Mareeba Team “Are We

There Yet”. So far this year, the team has raised $4775 and are confident of more to come over the coming weeks. The Mt Franklin Cardiac Challenge will be held for the 12th time this September and is an annual journey from Cairns to Cooktown, hosted by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation. Instigated by heart patient Pete McNally, the event has

raised more than $3.6 million for cardiac services in the Far North and this year will be funding a new Vivid Echocardiogram machine. Foundation fundraising and marketing manager Glenys Duncombe said every year the community rallied behind its heart patients, through the Cardiac Challenge. “This family is like so many here who have been affected by

heart conditions – my own included. But the great thing about the Cardiac Challenge, aside from the camaraderie and friends formed, is that all the money stays local and every cent goes towards its intended cause,” Ms Duncombe said. EXPRESS SPORT PORT Roosters half Caleb Foster evades a Seahawk tackle.

Yarrabah Seahawks beat Roosters 30-26 Defending premiers the Yarrabah Seahawks have delivered the Atherton Roosters their second straight loss following Saturday nights 30-26 win over the former ladder leading Roosters at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium. A Yarrabah try with one minute left to play gave the visitors a six tries to four victory on the back of a very strong defensive effort in the final 40 minutes. The Roosters had started the night with two quick tries and

led 12-0 after only seven minutes of play. Yarrabah’s reply was strong and they soon hit back and fronted the Roosters 16-12 with 7 minutes remaining in the first session. Forward Luke La Rosa’s try on the half time siren put the Roosters back in front 18-16 for the break. Both sides crossed early in the second session and the score was locked up at 24 all. A penalty conversion from Roosters centre Nigel Woodle-

igh at the 75th minute put the home side back in front 26-24 which looked to be the match saver. But the restart was terrible for the Roosters with procession handed over to Yarrabah early in the tackle count. Yarrabah wasted no time in posting the match winner when the ball was spun wide and finding the Roosters defence short on numbers. For the Roosters, forward Luke La Rosa played another strong game and crossed for

a try scoring treble. With five rounds remaining in the Cairns District Rugby League premiership, the first grade points table sees Cairns Brothers on top with 25 followed by Atherton 22, Mossman 17, Innisfail 17, Tully 16, Kangaroos 14, Ivanhoes 12, Suburbs 12, Yarrabah 11, Mareeba 4, Edmonton 0. The Roosters will be keen to get back in the winners circle when they host Kangaroos this Saturday night.
