Kuranda residents rally against KUR-World

DOZENS of outraged residents gathered at Kuranda’s Centenary Park on Saturday to voice their opposition to the proposed KURWorld development. Saturday’s meeting saw a number of guest speakers raise concerns about the potentially irreparable environmental and social impacts KUR-World could have on Kuranda and its surrounding communities. KUR-Alert President Ste-

ven Nowakowski alleged that if KUR-World were to go ahead, there would be far-reaching implications for the region. “I don’t think a lot of people quite understand the scale of this proposal,” he said. “This is a huge development, one of which is going to cater for roughly 4,700 people. “The social, environmental and economic strain that it is going to put on this town is going

to impact our future immensely.” Mr Nowakowski said Kuranda residents are in favour of development, just not mass development. “I think the Government’s mantra of regional jobs and growth at any cost is a folly, because we’re all going to pay for it in some way,” he said. “If this development is to be allowed, taxpayers are going to have to foot a 1.1 billion dollar

new Kuranda Range Road to facilitate KUR-World. “That’s why I believe it is disingenuous to think that regional jobs and growth is going to benefit this town, if anything it is going to take away jobs in the community as our small business owner’s currently operating struggle to compete with the giant that is KUR-World.” Mr Nowakowski said the increase in congestion on the

Kuranda Range and the uncertainty surrounding water allocations are further issues that will plague the community once KUR-World is up and running. Despite the uphill battle residents appear to be facing in their bid to stop KUR-World, Mr Nowakowski has been ecstatic with the response from the community in fighting back. “It has been outstanding,” he said. “The Kuranda commu-

nity is a wonderful and beautiful community, and because we love to live and breathe in this very green environment, we try to preserve it at all costs.” “We have compiled statistics since this campaign to stop KUR-World began, and I can safely say that more than 70% of the Kuranda population have expressed reservation and concern in relation to this development.” CONTINUED P3

Bank grants help community grow community groups in the Mareeba and Dimbulah area have received grants as part of the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank’s 2018 Grants Program. Gilbert Teitzel Chairman/ Director of Mareeba and Dimbulah Financial Services Limited, the company which operates the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank, said the grants would be used to carry out improvements and projects which would benefit the entire Maree-

ba and Dimbulah community. In total six community groups in Mareeba and two in Dimbulah received funding. “This year’s grants ranged from $1,000 to $60,000” Gilbert said. Since opening in 2005/2006, Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches has returned more than $2,371,498 to the Mareeba and Dimbulah community/districts. “We were very impressed with the quality of applications received and are delighted to

be able to support a range of projects, many of which may not have been financially viable without the support of our Community Bank Branch,” Director Gilbert said. Administered by Community Enterprise Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Grants Program received a large number of applications with more than 12 organisations seeking funding for projects. “The partnership with the

Foundation enables local community organisations to share in our success. “We aim to support accessible and valued community services and partnerships leading change which strengthen and unite our community.” There are currently more than 321 Bendigo Community Bank branches across Australia that have returned more than $83 million to support local communities.

Christmas cheer is about to begin in Mareeba this Sunday with the much anticipated Carols by Candlelight, at the Mareeba Turf Club. The free community event, organised by Mareeba Rotary, is for everyone with organisers encouraging all families to come along and join in the spirit of Christmas. The night promises to be a Christmas spectacular with everyone’s favourite Christmas carols and of course a special visit from Santa Claus and his elves. Organisers and performers have been working tirelessly for the last few months to bring the Christmas spirit to Mareeba and mark the start of the festive season. Several local community groups and performers will provide the entertainment on the night, which will provide a great opportunity to showcase the full range of their talents and for the community to join in. “It’s a special time for the community to all come together and join in the festive spirit,” said Ida Portella from Mareeba Rotary. Carols by Candlelight kicks off at 6.30pm, with food, drinks and candles on sale. Those who attend are encouraged to bring along a rug or a chair and sing along to all the Christmas songs.

Mareeba healthcare project advances

Outraged residents voiced their displeasure with the proposed KUR-World development at a rally at Kuranda's Centenary Park on Saturday.

“Too big, wrong place”

from p1 Husband and wife Chris and Ann Harth are two such residents who are extremely displeased with the KUR-World proposal. “We’ve lived here for 30 years and raised our kids here it has always been a very small, close-knit community and half the reason people live here is because we are so protective and love the environment,” she said. “This development is just going to change Kuranda as we know it, and it appears that we are at a point where we have to monopolise everything which is sad to see.” Mrs Harth said the findings in the Environmental Impact Statement released in recent weeks should be enough proof

that KUR-World isn’t going to work. “Simply put, it’s the wrong place and it’s too big, and as we have been consistently saying throughout this campaign, we’re not against development but we’re against massive development that is at the expense of our environment,” she said. Mrs Harth noted that it is disappointing Kuranda residents don’t get more of a say on the happenings of their hometown. “It’s really disheartening to see how small of a voice we have in this process,” she said. “We are the people who have built our lives here and invested so much money into the town, yet someone with monumental wealth comes here and decides to develop an enormous eco-

resort and we can’t do anything about it.” “Added to that, the Government refuses to hear our concerns on far too many occasions.” Mrs Harth’s husband Chris also spoke passionately against the proposed KUR-World, noting that it adds further credence to the notion that the powers at be don’t treat climate change with the necessary seriousness. “We’ve got to stop too great a population growth and this will just make the region bigger and busier,” he said. “Climate change is just a symptom of overpopulation, and we’re going to end up spending billions trying to cure it when we should be cutting it off at the source.” “That costs very little, it

doesn’t hurt anybody and it makes life better, however there’s no foresight from our politicians and no memory of what’s gone on before us.” It is not all bad news for those in opposition of KURWorld however, with news surfacing over the weekend that the Queensland Coordinator General has extended the public notification period to January 14, 2019 from the initial deadline of November 30, 2018. This will allow the community a further six weeks to provide feedback on the development. That is a small win for opponents of the KUR-World EcoResort and provides some hope for them in what is shaping up to be a David versus Goliath like battle.

Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) has been working in collaboration with Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS), GPs, health professionals, and the community to enhance primary healthcare services in Mareeba. Close consultation has been undertaken with general practices (GPs) in the region to codesign a number of initiatives to improve community access to primary healthcare services, information, and support, as well as training and development for health professionals in the region. (initiatives below) NQPHN Mareeba Primary Healthcare Manager Elisa Capaldi said collaborating with CHHHS and local primary healthcare service providers has

been vital in the development of these initiatives. “By working together with CHHHS and service providers in the community we have been able to brainstorm ideas and codesign sustainable initiatives that will provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time,” Ms Capaldi said. “We continue to collaborate with local service providers and CHHHS on this project as the initiatives are refined and then will be rolled out successively over the duration of the current financial year. “Thank you to all local GPs, health professionals, and the Mareeba community who have been involved in developing the initiatives and models of care, to help residents live happier, healthier, longer lives.”

HEALTHCARE Initiatives include: • Nurse practitioner recruited at Amaroo Medical focusing on chronic disease, preventative health checks, and delivering services at Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs) • Trainee nurse-practitioner funded to support nurse-led services • Finalising after-hours medical services in the Mareeba region • Health professionals employed to assist with the completion of updating My Health Records, chronic disease plans, and health assessments • Improved admission and discharge processes between RACFs, GPs, and Mareeba Hospital • General practice staff training to develop skills to increase clinical capabilities in the Mareeba region • Allied health services increased within Mareeba Shire • Workforce Development grants up to $5,000 for Mareeba and Hinterland areas.

Creating a healthier community THE Tablelands Regional Council is combating poor health and wellbeing with their Our Tablelands: Strong, Active and Healthy Project. The 12 month project was made possible through funding commitments from Northern Queensland Primary Health Network, and aims to promote health programs that address chronic disease risk in the community. The Tablelands consists of alarming health statistics to the tune of 57.6% of the population being overweight and obese, 5.2% of the population living with diabetes and high smoking rates (14.8%), all of which exceed the Queensland average. TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said this project is a necessity. “As you can see with some of the statistics on the Tablelands, more needs to be done in ensuring our community members are making healthier lifestyle choices,” he said. “A concerning factor is the social determinants impacting our health in the region, as we see the lower socioeconomic parts of our region often having a higher obesity and chronic disease rate.

“So addressing those risk factors through health promotion programs and services will help to prevent or lower those statistics around potentially preventable hospitalisations.” Cr Paronella said the project is not about reinventing the wheel, but rather being about working with peak health organisations who already provide evidence based health promotion programs and services, in the hope those services can come up to the Tablelands where possible. The Our Tablelands: Strong, Active and Healthy Project will run until June 30, 2019 and will consist of a variety of workshops and information sessions across the Tablelands to further educate the community on how to lead healthier lives. TRC will also be working closely with Cancer Council Queensland, Diabetes Queensland, Stroke Foundation and the Heart Foundation throughout the duration of the project. For more information on the project, visit the Tablelands Regional Council website at www.trc.qld.gov.au.

Mareeba Community Centre’s Julie Theakston and Ashlee Ellis lauded the expansion of the No Interest Loan Scheme which helps women experiencing domestic violence.

Financial help to rebuild lives

WHEN we think of domestic violence, we immediately point to the destructive harm imposed on an individual or a group of individuals from a physical and emotional standpoint, without recognising how often financial abuse is also inflicted on the victims. The financial burden on victims is hopefully set to change, as the tens and thousands of women experiencing domestic violence across Australia will have access to a $14.9 million program providing no interest loans to help them rebuild their

lives. The $14.9 million figure is an expansion on the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) courtesy of a Federal Government funding commitment, which will provide safe and affordable loans of up to $2,000 to victims of domestic and family violence. On a local front, the expansion of NILS will be extremely beneficial to DV victims in Mareeba according to Mareeba Community Centre’s Julie Theakston. “This is great for women in

CAROLS

the region, as it gives them an opportunity to make a go of things, particularly those who are in partnerships where they are financially dependent on a man,” she said. “I believe that the No Interest Loan Scheme is particularly advantageous to women who have financial issues with cars. “We don’t have the necessary public transport systems in place here so if you don’t have a car or licence it is very difficult to live day to day life. Ms Theakston said the expansion of NILS is further in-

dication that DV is establishing itself as a national issue that needs to be addressed immediately. “Domestic violence is represented on a lot of fronts now, and this funding certainly shows a large commitment towards it on the part of the government which is great to see,” she said. For more information on the No Interest Loan Scheme, contact the Mareeba Community Centre on (07) 4092 1948 or visit their website at www.mccinc.org.au.

Community march the streets in support of White Ribbon Day TRC Mayor Joe Paronella along with residents, support workers and community leaders marched the streets of Atherton in support of White Ribbon Day last Friday.

DOMESTIC violence support workers, local politicians and community members marched the streets of Atherton last Friday as part of White Ribbon Day. The march was followed by a lunch at Anzac Park and was hosted by not-for-profit organisation Community Services Tablelands (CST). It was the first event held for White Ribbon Day in Atherton and CST’s Community Development Coordinator Luan Murat said the specific aim of Friday’s event was to engage with men and encourage them to take a stand and speak out against domestic violence. “There are a number of domestic violence events run that are women-centric, so the inspiration of this year’s march was to begin the process of motivating

men to play more of an active role in preventing these issues,” he said. “This event is a small step however we’re hoping to build on it in the years to come. “We have plans to create a committee made up of key businesspeople, service providers and government officials so we can continue to gain further exposure around DV.” Mr Murat said when looking at domestic violence, overwhelmingly women and children are the victims and men are the perpetrators, and noted that he hopes a greater focus is placed on the mentorship and education of young men in the region to improve prevention measures. “We need to ensure we’re giving our young men the right tools so that they’re respectful of

their partners and the women in their lives,” he said. “There are a number of cultural issues which impact DV rates, so if we can encourage men to start seeing women on an equal footing it will hopefully go a long way to reducing incidences of domestic violence.” Sandi Baker from Cairns Domestic Regional Violence Service, of which encompasses the Tablelands, echoed Mr Murat’s comments on the seriousness of domestic violence in the region, all while noting some startling statistics. “Events like today are incredibly important, because the message that we’re trying to send to survivors of domestic and family violence is one of support,” she said. “Added to that, we’re also

trying to send a message that it’s not okay to use violence and abuse and that there is support around changing behaviours for perpetrators.” Ms Baker said there were 1,243 Domestic Violence Order Applications made to the Cairns Court last year, and 9,807 in total across Queensland. “The statistics surrounding domestic violence are concerning, so we want to reach a point where women, children and men can speak up about what they’re experiencing,” she said. “There’s quite often a sense of shame when discussing domestic violence, so hopefully initiatives like White Ribbon Day can reduce much of the stigma.” “It’s about not being violent and not being silent.”

that it had been worth the wait. “The facilities that this foreshore offers such as the children’s water park, BBQ facilities and fishing platforms will fast become a favourite place for local families and visitors,” he said. According to the Cook Shire Council, an estimated 100 jobs were created or supported throughout the construction of the foreshore. With initiatives such as the Cooktown Foreshore and Webber Esplanade Revitalisation Project, its gives further credence to the enormous work being done to ensure regional North Queensland remains a tourism hot-spot in Queensland.

COOKTOWN’S tourism industry is set for a timely boost after the Cooktown Foreshore and Webber Esplanade Revitalisation Project was officially opened last Saturday. The new and improved Cooktown Foreshore is equipped with a children’s water play area, kiosk and toilets, barbecues, parklands, fishing platforms and a waterfront walk. This project is one of four precincts of the Waterfront Master Plan, of which encompasses a considerable section of reclaimed land protecting the existing access road and historic Powder Magazine site. Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said it had been a long road to the completion of the foreshore revitalisation, but

David Hudson and the men that participated at this years White Ribbon Day event.

Men stand together against violence WITH November 25 marking White Ribbon Day 2018, Mareeba Community Housing Company (MCHC) this year combined forces with Mulungu Aboriginal Primary Health Care Services and Forever Wild (Ltd) to “Stand up and Speak Out and Act to prevent men’s violence against women”. Domestic and family violence continues to be an issue across Australia, with one in four women having experienced some form of abuse by an intimate partner since the age of 15. Even more alarming, on average, one woman is murdered by her cur-

rent or former partner each week in Australia. This year’s special guest and keynote speaker was Australian Aboriginal musician, entertainer and artist David Hudson. David led the men on a journey, including in depth personal reflection, mentoring and participant collaboration, highlighting the importance of protecting and providing for the women and children within their families and communities. Energy in the spolight THERE were items aplenty on the agenda last week as the Liberal National Party’s Member for Burleigh Michael Hart visited the Tablelands. Mr Hart, who is the Shadow Minister for Housing and Public Works, Shadow Minister for Innovation and Digital Economy as well as the Shadow Minister for Energy, was on the Tablelands to see how the region is progressing in relation to community housing, agricultural innovation and most notably, energy. Mr Hart said the visit was about getting a clear picture of where Queensland is heading leading up to the 2020 state election. With Mr Hart’s visit plac-

ing a strong focus on energy in the region, he highlighted some concerns surrounding the hurried nature with which the current Government are making towards renewables. “I agree that there needs to be a transition to renewable energy, however it needs to be done at a pace that makes sense,” he said. “We saw the issues that occurred in South Australia where they have almost 50% renewable energy, and how rushing to close down their base load power resulted in a blackout for more than 24 hours. “That ultimately led to the Olympic Dam Mine being closed down for two weeks.” Mr Hart said that we don’t

want the same to happen in Queensland, and because of that we have to ensure that our transition to renewable energy is economically viable and feasible from an engineering standpoint. “At the moment the big issue without having base load power is that we have no storage facilities,” he said. “Batteries aren't at the place they need to be yet, and the Government frankly hasn’t built enough pumped hydro schemes, which is something we’d also like to see more of.” Despite Mr Hart’s concerns, he was quick to heap praise on effective renewable energy initiatives throughout the region such as the Mt Emerald Wind

State Shadow Minister Michael Hart and LNP candidate Frank Beveridge visited a local farm in Mareeba last week to talk about local issues.

Farm and MSF Sugar’s agave project. “It’s been a year and a half since I visited the Mt Emerald Wind Farm, and to see the extensive construction that has taken place since then is amazing,” he said. “The wind farm has 180MW of power which will provide

electricity to more than 77,000 homes, and is a strong indicator of the great benefits renewable energy provides when done correctly. “Another interesting process is the work MSF Sugar is doing with agave, as they are using it to generate power which will complement their renewable

energy program.” Mr Hart said a big part of the battle is that energy companies don’t know what individual governments are going to do. “Both sides of government need to work together to ensure there’s a clear direction,” he said.

FNQ growers fear more electricity price hikes Far North Queensland horticulture growers are calling for the state’s electricity network to absorb costs associated with the planned end of transitional tariffs. Growers are bracing themselves for more pain as a number

of tariffs commonly used for irrigation are expected to become obsolete soon, resulting in the need for upgrades to the electricity network and on-farm infrastructure. FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said growers were already un-

happy with having to foot costs associated with farm electricity tariffs which they believed were unfairly imposed on them. “Our grower-members have experienced significant increases in farm electricity tariffs in recent years, some figures suggest by up

to 300%, and there are no signs of it abating,” Mr Moro said. “Horticultural growers have very little control over the cost of electricity, yet energy is critical to drive irrigation and refrigeration for our produce. “There is little scope for our

growers to reduce electricity intake. “Our growers are doing all they can to improve their individual energy efficiency, however, electricity continues to be a major cost burden to growers.” The association has writ-

ten to the State Energy Minister asking that costs associated with electricity tariffs, meters and disconnections, as a result of transitional tariffs ending, be borne by the electricity network, not by growers who are unable to pass these costs on.

TRC quarterly budget review

OPEN: Dozens of Tablelands residents converged on the new activity precinct ‘TheGrove’ for its official opening.

‘The Grove’ officially opens TABLELANDS residents with disabilities and mental health issues will be the beneficiaries of a new precinct after The Grove officially opened last Wednesday. The Grove, which is fully funded and operated by the Tableland Community Link, was a lengthy project that took the better part of three years. Tableland Community Link’s Service Manager Carrie de Brueys said it’s an initiative that will play an extremely important role in a number of people’s lives. “The precinct is a multi-purpose centre where people with disabilities and mental health issues can come and do art, cooking and a host of other activities

which encourages them to socialise with others,” she said. “It’s so important that people have genuine interaction with others in the community, and that’s what we’re about at the Tableland Community Link - we emphasise building those support systems and networks for people with disabilities so that they get an opportunity to do every day things just like everyone else. “We understand the importance of inclusion.” Although the project was in the pipeline for more than three years, it gained considerable momentum over the last 12-18 months according to Ms de Brueys. “We put forth our plans to

build the centre at the beginning of last year,” she said. “Added to that, our clients and staff have been enormous in their fundraising efforts, tallying more than $32,000 which went towards the construction and will also be used for the maintenance of the centre. Ms de Brueys said she hopes this new centre will entice members of the community to come along and help out in what is a worthwhile initiative. “This new centre provides ample opportunity for people on the Tablelands to lend a helping hand,” she said. “The response from the community as a whole throughout this process has been overwhelming,

so if that can continue into the future that would be really pleasing to see.” Ms de Brueys noted that The Grove is open to anyone who wants to access it, however, she noted that if they have a disability or mental health issue, they require a support worker to come with them. Ms de Brueys said she would like to give special thanks to Mick Fuller from Mareeba Sheds and Gas for helping build the centre as well as the Red Dirt Motorcyle Club for donating $1,000 that went towards the purchasing of the precinct’s tables and chairs. The Grove is located at 11 Grove Street, Atherton.

THE Tablelands Regional Council has released their Quarterly Budget Review and the figures spell good news. TRC Chief Executive Officer Justin Commons said Council has adopted a number of budget variations which will see their operating deficit and underlying budget position improve. “We’ve been able to collect additional revenue and make cost savings as an organisation with a bottom line improvement of 281,000 dollars,” he said. “The key difference of this report is that this is the first time Council has commenced doing a budget review on a quarterly basis. In the past it was an annual review of the budget, however by doing a quarterly review, we provide a much greater transparency and accountabil-

ity in terms of how Council is going financially and link it with the delivery of our services.” The Quarterly Budget Review comprised of figures from July 1, 2018 to September 30, 2018, and provides an assessment of performance and progress towards delivering initiatives within the 201819 Operational Plan. Of the 65 initiatives, two are complete, two are yet to commence, and three require monitoring at the end of quarter one. As at September 30, 2018, $3,142,532 has been spent on capital which currently equates to 10% of the full year adopted budget. The Quarterly Budget Review is available to the public and can be found on the Tablelands Regional Council website.

Scholarship program to benefit youth STUDENTS in the Mareeba Shire Council will again benefit from a University scholarship program, which will supplement their study costs in their first year of higher education. Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank Chairman Gilbert Teitzel said the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches Scholarship Program, which opens in December, was launched because the Branch believed local students deserved every opportunity to achieve their dreams. “An investment in education yields great long-term dividends and by helping young people gain access to tertiary education, the returns to the student, their families and the local community are significant. “The Community Bank® Branches Scholarship Program is a transformative undertaking that changes the lives of local students, strengthens communities for the long term and is a tangible example of the good that banking with us can achieve. “Our young people are our future and we believe they deserve the best support possible to help forge their careers and achieve their dreams. Successful Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Scholarship applicants will initially receive funding for one

year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed to assist in the second year of their study. Applications are invited from eligible students, starting their studies in 2019, from December 3, 2018. Applications close on January 29, 2019 and will be assessed in early February. Sarah Bensted was awarded one of the bank’s scholarships in 2015 and says “I moved to Townsville at the beginning of last year to start my course, a Bachelor of Laws. My transition into University and College was easy with the scholarship program from the team at Bendigo. The scholarship helped with the financial burden of textbooks, University and College fees.” The Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Scholarship is part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship Program, which partners with Community Bank® branches, Rural Bank and The University of Melbourne. The program has now supported over 670 students, with $7.2million in funding since its inception in 2007. For further information please contact Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches on 4092 2099 or 0740 935 266 or visit www.bendigobank.com.au/scholarships.

The cast of Mareeba Theatre Group’s Take a Chance of Me.

AN Eclectic mix of humour, song and dance was on display over the weekend as the Mareeba United Football Club played host to the Mareeba Theatre Group’s Take a Chance on Me production. Take a Chance on Me is a local production based on the stage musical Mamma Mia, of which includes some of ABBA’s greatest hits. The Mareeba Theatre Group

held three sold out shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night and will round out the production this weekend with a further two shows scheduled for Friday and Saturday night. Take a Chance on Me director Ida Portella said plenty of time and effort went into the production’s preparations. “We’ve been rehearsing since July, and considering the cast and

Play delights and gives back

crew are amateur performers, they have to balance rehearsals and work so I commend them for their commitment,” she said. “We are so fortunate to have Maree Gear choreograph the show, she has done a wonderful job and I can’t thank her enough.” Mrs Portella said the Mareeba Theatre Group’s annual production is about providing lighthearted entertainment that people of all ages can enjoy. “I think it’s really good value for money, so much so we have some people from Cairns and some from as far as Townsville who come along to watch the production,” she said. As part of each year’s production, the Mareeba Theatre Group

donate the profit from one of their shows to a charity of their choice. “We’re a not-for-profit organisation and we like to work with other not-for-profits in a way to give back to the community,” Mrs Portella said. “Other organisations don’t get the same opportunity we do to raise funds, so we like to help out where we can.” Their charity show last Thursday raised money for the Mareeba Wetlands. Mrs Portella said she wanted to thank the community for their unwavering support as well as anyone who has played a role in helping make Take a Chance on Me possible.

Kennel approved for Julatten RESIDENTS will have the opportunity to house their furry friends in a facility fit for comfort after Council approved an application for a boutique kennel to be established in Julatten. The pet retreat will include eight individual timber kennels and capacity to house up to 10 dogs, with each kennel to be fenced with a balcony and exercise area. Mayor Tom Gilmore said Council officers and the developer had worked together to ensure the amenity impacts to the

MAREEBA SHIRE

area are minimised. “While I understand some residents in the area expressed their concerns about noise and increased traffic, our officers have given the application optimal consideration and are comfortable the kennel will meet necessary requirements,” Cr Gilmore said. “Given that the proposed kennel development is small scale and that reasonable separation distances have been achieved between the kennel use and nearby dwellings, the development is

not likely to impact on residential amenity. “Furthermore, all dogs accommodated in the kennel must be confined to the sound insulated chalets between the hours of 6pm and 7am to mitigate any disturbance for nearby neighbours overnight.” Despite the areas of concern that has been voiced by some members of the community, a Mareeba Shire Council spokesman reiterated the Mayor’s comments in relation to the benefits this proposal offers.

“Council welcomes any new development to the region provided it fits within the town's planning scheme,” he said. “Anecdotally, there is a shortage for pet boarding facilities in the Shire, so we are sure it will be well received and patronised.” The spokesman said the application was looked at carefully, and all relevant elements were considered and where necessary, conditions were imposed to mitigate potential impacts to the amenity of the area.

Clothes help those in need “IT was a great success”. That was the opinion of Mareeba Community Centre’s Manager Julie Theakston after the notfor-profit organisation held their first ever ‘Clothes Party’ last Thursday. Ms Theakston said more than 25 attended the event and roughly $200 was raised, of which will go towards the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. “Considering this is the first time we have taken part in this initiative, I feel it was a really good start,” she said. “We plan on doing this again next year and hopefully we

can get further support so we can build on the success of this year’s clothes party.” Ms Theakston said MCC are looking at participating in similar initiatives heading into the new year and beyond. “We’re hoping to host other events that are community focussed that appeal to people from all walks of life,” she said. Ms Theakston noted that she would like to thank op-shops ADRA, Lifeline and St Vinnies for donating the majority of the clothes, as well as Mareeba Shire Council for their help in promoting the event.

The first ever Clothes Party held at Mareeba Community Centre last week was a great success in helping raise much needed funds for the Mareeba Shire Councils Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

EOI sought for animal refuge facility MAREEBA Shire Council is calling for expressions of interest (EOI) from entities to construct, own and operate an animal boarding and/or refuge facility at the reserve at Hickling Avenue Mareeba, which includes an area for Council’s impounded animals. A Council Spokesman said

MSC decided to call for expressions of interest because there are multiple options for the facility. “As an example, the facility could continue to run as is knowing that the refuge is reaching the end of its life,” he said. “Or we could see a full largescale redevelopment which could include a boarding kennel,

a refuge and a pound. “With an EOI, there is no predetermined solution, however the key requirement is that whatever the solution may be, it must include an area for impounded animals.” The spokesman said the land is appropriately zoned for such facility and has minimal impact

on the amenity of the area. “The length of the lease will be determined by the EOI however if someone is prepared to make a significant investment, a long-term lease arrangement will be considered,” he said. “There is an option for someone who is interested to develop something not only for their own

return in profit, but also to provide a valuable service to the community.” The spokesman said Council has budgeted for the management of impounded animals and currently pays the refuge to run the pound. In 2017, a total of 663 animals were impounded.

The spokesperson said Council need a pound to accommodate up to 16 impounded cats and dogs at one time. Expressions of interest will be opened shortly and anyone interested is encouraged to make contact with Council on 1300 308 641.

Airport helping tourism boom KEY businesspeople, local politicians and community members met at the Mareeba Bowls Club last Wednesday to discuss everything aviation at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon. The topics of discussion broached were the substantial upgrades to the Mareeba and Cairns Airports, and how those developments could be utilised to create a greater tourism footprint in the region. There were multiple guest speakers, one of which was the North Queensland Aero Club’s Secretary Scott Brady. Mr Brady’s speech consisted of a PowerPoint presentation that highlighted the success the club has experienced since they moved their operation from Cairns to Mareeba four years ago. The North Queensland Aero

Club operated out of Cairns since 1949 until our move four years ago,” he said. “It got to the point where the running costs were becoming prohibitive, and had we continued to operate out of Cairns, we would’ve folded. “So we had to look at other options and the most logical option was to move up here - it’s a short drive for students, the weather is better and it’s more cost effective for our operation.” Mr Brady noted that the Mareeba Airport upgrade is essential and one that will immediately benefit the club. “It’s so busy out there now, there’s between 4-6 aircrafts flying around at any one time which makes it almost impossible sometimes to get on the runway,” he said. “Because of that, the introduction of the parallel taxiway

is one that most operators at the airport are in favour of.” Mr Brady said the new and improved airport will hopefully mean a greater focus is place on identifying tourism opportunities on the Tablelands. “The potential for the Mareeba Airport from a tourism perspective is limitless, yet it basically isn’t used for tourism at all at this moment in time,” he said. “There are a number of scenic flights that can be done out of here, of which includes a 30 minute scenic flight around the Tablelands which will allow you to see the windmills, Tinaroo and Atherton. “You can be out to the reef, Fitzroy Island, Green Island on to Port Douglas and back to Mareeba in an hour and a half, so it’s something to think about from an economic standpoint. Mr Brady’s presentation also

highlighted plans for the Far North Queensland Aviation Museum (FNQAM), which the club said sets out to establish a significant museum that showcases the incredible contribution that Aviation has played in Far North Queensland, all while creating employment in our local community and training opportunities for the attainment of numerous skills. Mr Brady stated in his presentation that the project’s vision is to establish a world class Avia-

MAREEBA’S residents and business owners are encouraged to join in the festive spirit once again this year and light up their houses, properties and shops as part of the Mareeba Shire Council’s annual Christmas Lights competition. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore lauded the initiative. “It's a great way for the community to get involved in the festive season and spread some Christmas cheer,” he said. There will be multiple awards up for the grabs, of which include best residential, best rural, best business and best street. A list of properties will be published in The Express and on Council's website so residents and visitors can go on a selfdrive Christmas lights tour. Winners of the competition will be announced in The Express’ Wednesday, November 19 edition.

tion Museum that provides an interactive and captivating experience for visitors and provides a facility for training and development within our community. The FNQAM has named the Mareeba Aerodrome as the most suitable location for the museum. With a profit just shy of $50,000 and thousands of landings recorded from the last financial year, the future appears bright for the North Queensland Aero Club.

Vinnies calls for support in Mareeba 581 Mareeba people doing it tough were helped by Vinnies volunteer members last financial year – and they’re calling on more people to join them in 2019. Some of the help needed includes collating, preparing and distributing Christmas hampers

to families in need, and throughout the year supporting disadvantaged school students with their education and assisting families and individuals affected by domestic violence. “Our volunteer members, who we refer to as Vincentians,

are the backbone of the work we do in assisting people in their time of need,” said Vinnies’ Far North Queensland Membership and Development Officer Davina Dansie. “We provide a hand up, not just a hand out, to people in need.

We also link people in need with other community organisations and services. “It’s rewarding and important work and a great way to give back to your community. “Our members also come from all walks of life, and from

all religions.” Ms Dansie said anyone thinking of volunteering should make contact to learn more about the work of Vinnies in Mareeba. “Preparing and delivering Christmas hampers to give joy to families doing it tough would be

an ideal way for people to get an insight into the work our volunteers do and what being a member is all about.” For more information contact Davina on 403 38300 or 0447 883 189 or email davina.dansie@ svdpqld.org.au.

North Qld squeezed for every penny at the pump The State’s peak motoring body has slammed North Queensland retailers for ripping off motorists and adding to the pain of crippling record high fuel prices. RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said RACQ’s October Fuel Price Report revealed fuel companies had enjoyed retail margins as high as 14.4cpl in many northern towns and cities, while

drivers battled record breaking prices. “We’ve seen some of the highest fuel prices ever recorded in Queensland, but that doesn’t excuse the blatant rip-off occurring in parts of the region,” Ms Ross said. “Our data shows retailers in Cairns and Mareeba raked in indicative retail margins as high

as 14cpl, up by between 5-6cpl on the previous month, which is so frustrating considering drivers are already copping record high prices.” Ms Ross said the global oil price had been a major factor in pushing up the local price, but in recent weeks it had fallen, so RACQ expected to see retailers pass on savings to drivers.

“In the last month, the oil price has dropped by 18 percent, and that equates to a fall of about 14cpl in the wholesale price retailers pay in the north. Frustratingly, instead of passing those savings on to drivers, servos continue to rort motorists,” she said. “With the oil price and the wholesale price dropping, we’ll be watching retailers closely to

make sure the savings get passed on to motorists.” Ms Ross urged locals to take up the technology that would be available when Queensland’s real-time fuel price trial commenced next month. “Fuel apps and websites, like RACQ’s, will have every single price across the State listed so we’re urging drivers to put in

the leg work to get the best deal. That way we can use people power to try to drive down the price of fuel.” Mareeba: October average price – 163.5cpl (+9.0). Indicative Retail Margin – 14.4cpl. Cairns: October average price – 162.4cpl (+7.1). Indicative Retail Margin – 13.9cpl.

Lemon laws a win for motorists

The State’s peak motoring body has welcomed the introduction of new ‘lemon laws’ which would give drivers better protection and the ability to claw back tens of thousands of dollars in losses. RACQ spokesperson Paul Turner said the new laws would see the vehicle value owners could take to the Queensland

Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) increased from $25,000 to $100,000.Mr Turner said the increased limit and the reclassification of motorcycles, caravans and motorhomes as vehicles, would massively increase the number of people who could access the protection. “We know many of these dud

cars are $50,000 to $80,000 cars, so this will dramatically improve the chances for motorists to have their day in court, get rid of the dud car and go out and buy a new one,” Mr Turner said. “We’ve seen the boom in grey nomads and the boom in caravanning and camping for families so these changes will also give coverage for what’s often a very significant investment.” Mr Turner also welcomed the reinstatement of warranty protection for used cars. “Most buyers don’t expect, or are often unable to afford, expensive and unplanned repairs shortly after purchasing a vehicle, so when things go wrong, it can be financially devastating,” he said. “We’re happy to see the reinstatement of warranty protection which will protect those buying older or higher mileage vehicles. This means everyone is covered,

Think before you walk this Christmas With the Christmas party season in full swing, the RACQ has urged pedestrians to take extra care around roads when under the influence of alcohol. Spokesperson Clare Hunter said the warning was prompted by data which revealed there had been 28 pedestrian deaths across Queensland so far this year. “The silly season often means Christmas parties and catching up with friends, fam-

ily and workmates over a few drinks. It’s a fun time of the year which can easily end in tragedy if people aren’t careful,” Ms Hunter said. “Walking home after having a few beers or glasses of wine might seem harmless, but with alcohol affecting your judgement your journey may be more risky than you think. “Being intoxicated can affect your reaction time and result in

poor decision-making or risky behaviour. That’s why it’s so important to have a plan before you go out. If you plan to walk home stick to the footpaths, cross at designated crossings and if you can, walk with a sober friend.” Ms Hunter said pedestrians were some of our most vulnerable road users and if struck by a car would likely suffer extensive injuries or worse.

even those buying at the cheapest end of the market, which might include those buying their first car.” Mr Turner said if motorists were affected by a faulty car, the first thing they should do was go back to the dealer or place which sold the car. “Give them the chance to do the right thing. If they won’t do the right thing, you’ve now got the ability to go to QCAT or small claims court for vehicles up to $100,000. That’s a lower cost in terms of court action, but it’s still court action. In the long run we’d like an even simpler, formalised mediation process but this is a great step forward.”

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Prepare a muffin tin with cupcake liners. 2. In a bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, flour, baking soda and sugar until there are no visible clumps. 3. In another bowl, mix together the vinegar, coffee, olive oil and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the wet ingredients mixture and stir only until they just come together. 4. Pour the batter into the cupcake liners, about 2/3 of the way full. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. 5. Meanwhile prepare the frosting. In a saucepan melt the butter and remove from the heat. Stir in the cocoa until smooth. Then alternatively add the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla, stirring after each addition. 6. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes. Then remove from the tin and let cool on a rack. Once cool, coat the cupcakes with the frosting.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Local players relish Futsal World Cup experience

THE Australian U20s futsal side made history last week as they competed in the U20 World Cup held in Colombia, of which Far North Queensland was well represented. Mareeba’s Liam Leporati and Atherton’s Dale Ampeybegan were selected in the side, making Ambeybegan the first Aboriginal player to represent the green and gold in a futsal world cup. They played three qualifying matches which consisted of a 5-2 loss to South Africa, a 10-0 defeat at the hands of host nation Colombia, and a 7-4 victory over India. The win against India was the first time an Australian side has won a match in a Futsal World Cup, much to the delight of their coach Ronnie Leporati. “It would have been great to make the quarters, however I’m still extremely pleased with our team’s performance,” he said. “We finished our qualifiers

on the same points as Italy and Morocco; however we missed out on progressing due to goal difference. “I’m confident that had we had more time to gel and prepare together, we would have had a real shot at going further in the competition.” Leporati said there were two highlights from the trip that stood out from the rest. “Our entire team is really excited that they created history by being the first Australian side to win a qualifier,” he said. “Added to that, playing in front of nearly 9,000 people against Colombia was one the best experiences anyone involved in sport can ask for. “They live and breathe futsal in Colombia and the atmosphere at that game will be something we’ll never forget.”

Cowboys hierarchy visit the region AGM makes over multiple weeks throughout North Queensland. “The prime purpose of our visit is to give an update of where we are at as a club and notify the people of Mareeba and the Tablelands of some of the changes we are currently undergoing at the club,” North Queensland Cowboys Acting CEO Jeff Reibel said. “The Cowboys represent all of Queensland, not just Townsville, so it’s essential that we make a concerted effort to engage with all of the communities that encompass our large footprint and reinforce to them how important their continual support is for our club.” Despite a less than stellar 2018 season on the field, initiatives away from the field of play Cowboys COO Michael Luck, Acting CEO Jeff Reibel, Andrew Ford from has allowed the North QueensMareeba Toyota and Cowboys Head of Commercial Partnerships Ross Aldridge. land Cowboys to establish a foundation that is the envy of many clubs across the National LIAISING with key stakehold- Queensland Cowboys’ Acting ships Ross Aldridge visited the Rugby League. ers, sponsors, local politicians CEO Jeff Reibel, former player Tablelands. “There is a lot in our pipeline and supporters was the order of and club COO Michael Luck and The visit was part of a re- at the club, of which includes the business last week as the North Head of Commercial Partner- gional tour that has stretched completion of the new stadium

changes to CDRL in 2019 The under 19 competition has been scrapped and will be replaced by the returning under 18 grade in the 2019 Cairns District Rugby League season. This was confirmed at the league’s AGM on Sunday with the mode of competition being first grade, reserve grade and under 18. Also new in 2019 will be a ladies NRL touch league competition which was supported by all club’s at Sunday’s AGM. Ladies from 15 to 40 can participate and only eleven players are needed on the field at any time. The non-tackle competition will run for 10 weeks and played with the local senior club premiership games.

in 2020,” Mr Reibel said. “Unfortunately that means we will have to say goodbye to our current stadium in 2019 which has served us so well, however, the associated benefits of this project is crucial in setting us up for sustainability and success into the future.” Mr Reibel said added to the new stadium, the club is also increasing their NRL Cowboys House which is a boy’s facility that provides young indigenous men an educational opportunity in secondary school and beyond. “The NRL Cowboys House is a wonderful initiative and one I’m proud to be a part of,” he said. “We have plans to open a girl’s facility next year as well, which will mean we’ll be giving 100 young men and women an opportunity for educational outcomes that they may not have received had they stayed in their community where there’s no access to secondary education.”

Atherton welcomed back some key players and were close to full strength on Saturday for their Cricket far North home game against Cassowary Coast. Sitting at fifth on the ladder Atherton needed to turn their fortunes around to stay in contention, and pulled off the win earning some much need bonus points in the process. Sent out to field in hot conditions, Atherton's bowlers were on song, bowling tight and economically. Seppe Barletta finished his opening spell 3-22, after dismissing the top three batsmen for 22. Tom Boorman shook off his jetlag with a first ball wicket and a hat-trick opportunity to be 3-5 off his first over, finishing the day 5-32 and ever reliable Dan Parnell took 2-14 to have Cassowary all out for 85. Dan Parnell set about chasing the total with a quick-fire 44 off 28 balls, Tom Boorman hit 16 off 17 and Paul Nasser finished the job with 16 not-out in the 15th over. Atherton play Rovers at Endeavour Park Cairns this Saturday 1st December. Result: Atherton 4-86 (D Parnell 44, T Boorman 16, P Nasser 16no) Def.
