ing to Brisbane where he became a part of the Logan Lions which then became Logan West.

Learning has been one of the key aspects of Trevor’s Lion journey with him working with people and gaining new skills over the years.

Lions has also affected his social and work life with him improving them with the skills and resources that he gained by

being a lion.

Before becoming a Lion Trevor had difficulty speaking to people and in front of crowds but now can do it confidently and without missing a beat.

After being awarded with his lifetime membership Trevor looked back on all the years of hard work and realised that it was all worth it.

“It feels that all the time you

put in, the long hours the long days has really been worth it,” he said.

“Being in Lions has definitely made me a better person.

“I have no regrets Lions has helped me so much.”

The lifetime memberships are awarded to members with over continual 30 years to Lions and are a way to recognise their work.

Continuing Mareeba Lions President Gary Searle was honoured to present Trevor with his lifetime membership to recognise his work for lions and the community.

“He (Trevor) likes helping people and when you’re in an organisation like Lions its our moto, We Serve,” he said.

“Trevor started his service elsewhere and continued after he moved to Mareeba.

“He’s seen all sorts of different projects in all sorts of different places.”

Trevor will now be taking a step back and enjoying his time in Lions after the years of work he has done for Lions and the broader community.

The Mareeba Lions club also received a generous $1000 donation from Community funerals that will go to more projects in the future.

One such project on the cards for lions in the upcoming year is an upgrade to the BMX park on Kennedy Highway that is adjacent to the new fire station.

Roundtable amounts to “nothing” as crime surges CRIME: Helen Poyntz from Mareeba was broken into last week.

BY PHIL BRANDEL LOCAL business owners and residents claim that youth crime is on the rise in Mareeba.

Several local businesses in Mareeba have been broken into over the past few weeks including the Caltex Service Station, Mareeba Motorcycles and the

Mareeba State High School.

The crime increase comes after member for Cook Cynthia Lui convened a round table meeting in March of this year, where Ms Lui invited a number of community groups to discuss tackling the growing problem of youth crime within the Mareeba Shire

Some local businesses who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal told The Express that the round table meeting “came to nought” “that nothing had been done” and the “the meetings were all talk and no action.”

One resident who has felt the increase in youth crime is Helen

Poyntz from Mareeba whose house and shed was broken into in the middle of the day while she was home.

Helen said she heard some strange noises from her back door, and found two children who were aged around 10 or 12 with two teenagers trying to gain access to her back door.

“When I spotted them trying to get into my back door I yelled like a banshee – get out of here,” she said.

“This was about 3.30 in the afternoon, about half an hour later I heard another strange noise and this time I grabbed a large stick and yelled at them that I was calling the police.”

Helen later learnt that the offenders had stolen a metal bar and knife from her shed.

“I was very scared because I’m retired and I’m pretty much on my own during the day,” Ms Poyntz said.

“We later found out that they had a fishing knife and a metal bar that they had stolen from my back shed.

“If they had got into my house with the knife and the bar I hate to think what would’ve happened to me.”

Later on police arrested one of the four intruders.

Another business that has been feeling the increase in juvenile crime is the Caltex Ser-

vice Station on Byrnes Street where theft from their shop was almost a daily occurrence.

Manager of the Caltex Jason said that his staff had been abused and threatened and “It’s constant day in and day out thieving.”

“Normally it’s a bunch of teenagers and kids and we get called every name under the sun,” he said.

“They throw rocks at the shop, they steal stuff and when we confront them they throw things at us.

“They have even thrown hot pies at me and my staff.

“They steal, they knock stock of the shelves, they throw things at us and they’ve even hit my staff.”

Jason has been the manager of the Caltex for nearly 18 months and said that youth crime was getting worse.

“Youth Justice come in and try to get the kids to apologise, but it doesn’t make any difference the same kids come back in and commit the crimes again,” he said.

“It’s just non-stop, the police come in we give them video footage and they do their best but because they are so young their hands are tied.”

The Mareeba High School tuck shop was broken into on the night of August 1, with vandals

damaging windows and doors and then throwing milk around the interior of the canteen. Early estimates are that there was several thousand dollars’ worth of damage.

Don Langton from Mareeba Motorcycles has been broken into about five or six times at his two properties and once his truck was graffitied so bad that his insurance company decided to write the truck off.

“The truck was worth about 9,000 dollars but they spray painted it so bad, there was about 12,000 dollars damage.”

“They get a slap on the wrist and get let off.

“You don’t get restitution, you don’t get told when they go to court and you don’t get told what their punishment is.”

Mr Langton said he would like to see a curfew on the streets “people have had enough.”

As for the round table he said “Cynthia Lui is useless, nothing has been done since that round table meeting,” said Mr Langton.

“She comes here to try and make a name for herself and then she goes away, she’s got no idea and she doesn’t want to know about it.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui was approached directly for comment, but no reply was received.

Casey comes 360 WHEN Casey Wright was 24 she started dabbling with illegal drugs, at first she thought it was a fad, but when her friends stopped using, Casey continued with the habit.

Five years after starting, she went to rehab for substance abuse and has now been clean for over three years.

When Casey went to rehab the house she was living in was taken off her and her children removed from her care.

Casey was in rehab for nearly five months and says the hardest part was being away from her children.

It was after she got out of rehab that she called Mareeba Community Housing to help her

find somewhere to live with her two young boys.

“There wasn’t a lot of affordable housing available and a lot of the local real estate agents knocked me back,” she said.

“I couldn’t be reunited with my boys until I found somewhere safe for us to live.”

“We were in that unit for 2 years until I got back on my feet and I could find a house with a yard for my boys to play in, “While I was in community housing, I learnt about paying rent on time, passing rental inspections and creating good rapport with the landlords.”

Casey has come full circle and now works as a property manager at Mareeba Property Management.

“I see a lot of homelessness and my past has made me empathetic to people who are doing it tough, especially mothers that are trying to get their foot in the door so they can get their children back,” Casey said.

“I believe that homelessness could happen to anyone – anyone could lose their job, or have a marriage breakdown and become homeless.

“It was a massive learning curve and I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I didn’t go through that.”

Casey said that her experience now helps her to help other people.

“Now people come to me for help or advice. I try to guide them, using stories from my own journey,” she said.

“People need to know that not all addicts are bad people we’ve just lost our way.

“I’m grateful to the people who stepped in and helped me, otherwise I would have ended up in jail, rehab saved me.

“I really am grateful to people like my parents and MCH, it’s good to know that there are people out there who want to help.”

MAREEBA Chamber of Commerce held their first business luncheon post COVID-19 and invited several prominent community members to speak including the local high schools.

The lunch took place on Monday, August 3 and saw many of the prominent business owners and chamber members sitting down and discussing some of the projects that have been in the works.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro outlined many of the projects that the chamber has been underway with since their last luncheon before passing the mic over to the School Captains of Mareeba State High School and Saint Stephen’s Catholic College.

The school captains delivered speeches informing those present about what the schools are doing coming out the other side of the COVID-19 lockdown.

The baton was then passed to

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin where she discussed council’s vision and the works that have been done.

Among those works were the John Doyle Bridge Project, The Barron Falls Walking Trail, the discovery of water near Chillagoe, Mareeba Airport upgrades and many more.

“During my short time as Mayor, Council along with our communities have faced the challenges and impacts of COVID-19,” Mayor Toppin said.

“This council moves swiftly to offer relief for residents, businesses and community organisations during a time of great uncertainty and tension.

“Over the next 12 months council will accelerate a number of projects across the shire; these projects will create and support jobs, stimulate the local economy and improve the liveability of the shire.”

After the speech the floor was open to questions from

members of the audience and first to speak was Independent candidate for Cook Jodie Batzke who broached the subject of the Block Chain Project, a long time issue within the area and one of great importance to both council and the chamber.

The Block Chain Project has been an ongoing issue of water trading with the chamber vying to find the best way of buying and selling water that benefits the residents of the region.

“Water is gold in this shire and anything we can do to support and advocate for availability and the pricing of the water is most important,” Mayor Toppin responded.

The next chamber lunch will take place in October where all of the candidates running for the Cook electorate will have their debate and answer questions from residents in their electorate.

New home for Atherton COVID clinic

OPEN: The COVID-19 testing and fever clinic in Atherton is now located at the old nurses’ quarters.

AFTER the announcement that the Queensland border would be closing due to COVID health concerns, the Atherton Hospital has moved its COVID-19 testing and fever clinic to Atherton Community Health, at Louise St (the old nurses’ quarters).

Atherton Hospital Director of Nursing and Midwifery and Facility Manager, Dr Ann Aitken, said the testing and fever clinic will allow the hospital to rapidly respond to increased demand for testing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Testing is important to keep us all safe,” Dr Aitken said.

“The more people get tested, the sooner we will be able to act if there is COVID-19 transmission within the community.

“This gives us a better chance to shut down an outbreak.

“Symptoms of COVID-19 may include fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, lack of taste or smell, and fatigue.

“Tests at the testing clinic are free and appointments are preferred.

“All people being tested should isolate themselves until their test results are available,” said Dr Aitken.

The clinic is open 8.00am to 4.30pm, seven days per week at the rear entrance of the Community Health building. For appointments phone 4091 0502.

A Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service spokesperson said work was also underway for a stand-alone fever clinic in Mareeba.

“Currently COVID-19 testing is available at Mareeba Hos-

pital. All visitors and patients to Mareeba Hospital are met at the hospital entrance by a nurse before being triaged for testing.”

TRC under audit and review ON Friday July 31 the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Mayor Rod Marti handed down a balanced budget meaning that the council was no longer in deficit if it stayed within its operating budget.

One of the problems being faced by the TRC in staying within the budget is that they are still not 100 per cent sure how big the deficit is that they inherited from the previous council.

At first estimates the carry over deficit was around $3.5 million dollars but council are now waiting on auditors to get an exact dollar amount.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti said that The Queensland Audit Office (QAO) is conducting the annual scheduled financial audit.

“The TRC external audit is underway and usually takes about two weeks. TRC’s audited financial statements will be published in our annual report in November.”

At the July budget meeting Cr Marti also announced an organisational review.

“We are taking a good look at our organisational structure, the services we provide and the level of service.” Mr Marti said “It will be pretty comprehensive and it’s being done internally by CEO Bob Owen, it will also look at our policies and procedures.”

Mr Marti said that over the past 4-5 years council had grown in ways that wasn’t sustainable and gotten into programs that were not critical.

“We can only do want we can afford and we need to concentrate on roads, rubbish and water.”

Another arm of the TRC is also under audit. The Tablelands Regional Council Enterprise is a separate legal entity, which was set up by council in the hope of investigating other possible revenue streams.

At June 25’s council meeting it was moved to dissolve the TRCE which was set up in May 2018.

At the time Rod Marty said that, “Somewhere in the vicinity

of half million dollars had gone down the gurgler.”

In a report tabled at June’s ordinary council meeting current TRC CEO Bob Owen wrote: “In the opinion of the staff, no useful, practical or real outcomes have been achieved by TRCE.” “The most recent deal allegedly negotiated by the TRCE CEO appears to be sham and no projects promoted by TRCE appear to be viable based on past performance and available information. “ The TRCE is now also under audit by an external company investigating its financial statements.

Mayor Rod Marti said The TRCE audit will be completed as part of year end activities.

“The preparation of the TRCE financial statements is to allow the company and Council (as sole shareholder) to continue with the deregistration of the company.” He said “The TRCE financial statements will be presented to Council as a report in an open

VP DAY (Victory in the Pacific) is commemorated on August 15.

This is the day in which Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II, in effect bringing the war to an end.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War a new medal has been made available to every living Second World War veteran to say ‘thank you for your service’.

Minister for Veterans Darren Chester launched the medallion and certificate last week in the lead up to the end of the Second World War commemorations.

“As we approach this special anniversary, we recognise that it will be one of the last opportunities we have as a nation to publicly acknowledge the remaining veterans of the Second World War, of which there are around 12,000 still with us today,” Mr Chester said.

“These brave Australians served our nation in the far cor-

ners of the world, fighting in theatres of war from Europe to North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, to Asia and the Pacific, with the conflict also reaching Australian shores.

“Australia can never fully repay the debt we owe these amazing men and women but, to mark their service, the Federal Government is producing this Commemorative Medallion and Certificate of Commemoration for the remaining living Second World War veterans.”

The medallion is available to all living veterans who apply and will be presented in a display case and is a gesture of appreciation from a grateful nation.

Sergeant Phillip William English from 6 Service Flying Training School from Malanda said he joined the airforce after seeing a flying display in 1942 “I was in Malanda when the troops arrived and I saw a couple of planes flying over putting

on a flying display, wheeling and diving and from the moment on I decided to join the airforce once I turned 18,” Mr English said.

Sergeant English said he was on a break when he heard the news about the end of the war.

“I was in South Australia on a break as we had been training on Lancaster bombers,” he said.

“We had mixed feelings when we heard about the surrender as we didn’t know what the future held.

“After we heard the news we went back to the base to join in the celebrations, about a month later I was demobbed.”

Second World War veterans, or their families on their behalf, can apply online and by phone during business hours.

VP Day at Rocky Creek TABLELANDS Regional Council will be holding a special ceremony this Saturday to commemorate VP Day. Mayor Rod Marti said “On the Tablelands, we will remember the local men and women who served and those who were based on the Tablelands during WWII at a ceremony at Rocky Creek War Memorial Park,” “This year is the 75th anniversary of victory in the Pacific and we’ll be dedicating six individual and two unit plaques during the ceremony.” He said “The unit plaques recog-

nise Reserved Occupations and the Australian Women’s Land Army.

“We’ll also be unveiling a new memorial sculpture by Amanda Feher that represents the facilities, actions and people from the Rocky Creek site, which was the largest WWII military hospital in the southern hemisphere.”

Guest speakers at the event will include WWII veteran Jack Duffy, who served in the merchant navy, and Millaa Millaa resident Margaret Plant, who will share information about the Rocky Creek nurses and female staff.

The event is from 10am Saturday 15 August but, due to COVID-19 hygiene and physical distancing requirements, numbers are strictly capped.

Trust to assist students

Student residents of the Mareeba Shire will be able to get their hands on up to $500 after a new bursary from the Sonia Fenwick Memorial Trust was announced.

The bursary seeks to provide financial assistance to young people living in the Mareeba Shire to assist them with their education.

The Sonia Fenwick Trust was established in 1999 from the estate of long time Mareeba resident Sonia Fenwick; Ms Fenwick was a great supporter of promoting opportunities for students to further their education and a great lover of sport.

The Trust is now offering a bursary of up to $500 to go to local students who are pursuing academic prowess.

There is no formal applica-

tion form and the Trustees are prepared to consider more informal applications.

While all applications will be considered the Trustees are particularly interested in seeing applications which focus on the performing arts, drama and/or music projects.

Peter Apel is one of the Trustees for the Trust and says that many students have benefited from the trust over the years.

“The bursary offers an opportunity for students to pursue their educational interests without the additional financial burden on their family,” he said.

“This new bursary ensures that no student misses the opportunity to pursue their educational aspirations.

Jobs success LOCAL job provider Q.I.T.E has smashed its goal of placing 100 people in 100 jobs two weeks ahead of schedule.

‘100 Jobs in 100 Days’ is an internal challenge for Q.I.T.E staff to place 100 local unemployed people into full time or part time work with local employers in just 100 days.

The program kicked off in May and QITE General Manager Jillian Trout said they have exceeded their target “In the past we have had higher targets of 200 jobs but considering COVID we decided to go with 100 jobs in 100 days,” she said.

“Instead we did 100 jobs in about 51 days and at last count we did 229 jobs in 100 days.”

Jillian said that the jobs came

from a variety of industries including farming, transport and administration.

“It’s been a great success as some of our clients have been long term unemployed and it’s been a lot harder to fill jobs in what is a soft market due to COVID,” said Jillian.

“A lot of the jobs are quite urgent as sometimes we get a call from a farmer who says ‘I need someone to start tomorrow’, so it can be quite challenging.”

Jillian also said they are always looking for resumes from anyone who is keen and reliable.

“For farmers and office workers it’s about reliability, it’s about being keen to learn and having a can do attitude,” she said.

Young Sophie receives prestigious scholarship

AN exceptional Cooktown State School student has beaten the odds and received the prestigious and highly coveted Harding Miller Education Foundation academic scholarship propelling her through her schooling.

Out of the 400 applicants for the scholarship Year 9 student Sophie Miller was only one of 139 successful applicants.

The two year scholarships is awarded to students in year 9 and at the end of year 10. The recipients are invited to reapply for another two years of support with all four years amounting to $20,000.

It provided her with a new laptop, high speed internet and top class tutoring, subject and career guidance and financial support to help cover the costs of uniforms, books and school expenses.

The scholarship was open to disadvantaged year 8 girls across to country who displayed exceptional potential and ability in their academic studies and give them the support and backing they need to succeed.

Since its 2015 launch the Harding Miller Education Foundation has supported 470 scholarship recipients.

Sophie was awarded the

scholarship late last year and was due to fly down south for a special ceremony which has since been cancelled.

Sophie was blown away when she found out she had won the scholarship and felt like she was “worthy and important.”

“When I heard I had won the scholarship I had an extreme feeling of pride and felt like all my hard work was worth something,” she said.

“I felt like I was worthy and important, after school I would like to go to university and study journalism or law.”

Deputy Principal David Lang is extremely proud that Sophie has won this scholarship and says she continues to prove that people can succeed no matter where they are.

“She wrote an application to the foundation which was phenomenal; she is a fabulous writer,” he said.

“She has done well with the resources and proved it by getting straight A’s in her last semester report card.

“This scholarship is for the best of the best, iron sharpens iron, these kids work hard in schools all over Australia.”

The Ellis Beach float chair and mat are available during patrol times from April to November while the Palm Cove float chair is available all year round.

Flexichoice CEO Virginia Carr is excited for the new wheelchairs and understands the positive benefits that people can get out of using this service.

“The overall health effects of strolling on the beach, swim-

ming and fresh air are important for everyone,” she said.

“The Cairns Regional Council’s improvements to accessing the beaches and the fantastic new disability specific equipment widen the possibilities to people with a disability to join in on this experience.

“We are very grateful to the Cairns Regional Council as these resources enrich the life of the Tableland community also.”

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said Council was working to ensure people were engaged and connected within the commu-

nity, irrespective of their ability.

“Council has made real progress in improving the capacity for all people with a disability to access our services, facilities and information,” he said.

“We are continuing to find ways to remove barriers for people to participate in activities within the community and improve the quality of life for people with a disability.

“Council has stepped in and purchased these pieces to help all people in our community gain access to the beach and ocean, something most of us

take for granted.”

A third float chair is located at the Smithfield Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) office for use in registered programs and as an additional chair at Ellis and Palm Cove beaches during peak times.

New accessible car parks and linking paths to the beaches have also been installed to improve access to the beach.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin welcomes and supports Cairns Regional Council’s initiative to provide an inclusive beach experience.

A CUSTODIAL correctional officer will undergo testing for blood borne diseases following an incident at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre where he was bitten by a prisoner.

Officers were unlocking the safety unit on Sunday morning August 9 when the prisoner suddenly lunged at them, biting the officer on the hand.

The officer was treated at the scene and attended hospital for testing.

The prisoner then reopened an injury from a recent selfharm incident, causing considerable bleeding. His wounds are being treated at the prison health centre.

Prisoners who assault officers may face additional criminal charges and further prison time.

New legislation passed by Parliament in July increased the

maximum penalty for serious assault on a corrective services officer with aggravating circumstances in line with assaulting a police officer and other frontline service officers.

Aggravating circumstances include biting, spitting and throwing bodily materials, and the offence now carries a maximum penalty of 14 years.

The latest incident comes after two officers were spat on following an interaction with a prisoner on Friday July 31.

The two officers were conducting a welfare check in the Detention Unit and when they opened the prisoner’s cell door.

He then became non-compliant and spat on both officers.

Both officers withdrew from the cell and were taken to hospital for testing.

Queensland Corrective Ser-

vices (QCS) said that management and senior officers were continuing to support all the officers, their family and their colleagues.

“Prisoners who assault officers may face additional criminal charges and further prison time” A QCS spokesperson said.

“They are also subject to internal disciplinary processes, including loss of privileges.”

“Queensland Corrective Services is a front line public safety agency and our officers interact with the most challenging and complex people in our society to ensure the safety and security of the community.”

Both officers have returned to work since the assault and the matter is being investigated by CSIU and charges maybe laid at a later date.

Unemployed knocking back jobs Wayne Costa from Ace Cabinets in Tolga has been looking for qualified cabinetmakers since May.

QUEENSLAND'S unemployment rate hit 7.7 per cent in June while the national unemployment rate now is 7.1 per cent.

But across industries such as hospitality, agriculture and construction, regional employers are seeking workers, with not enough to be found.

Employers across regional Queensland are struggling to fill vacant jobs, despite unemployment rising during the coronavirus pandemic.

Many employers feel the Federal Government's increased JobSeeker payments are acting as a major disincentive to work.

Wayne Costa, from Ace Cabinets in Tolga, has been looking for qualified cabinetmakers since May and says he could hire three people tomorrow if they had the right qualifications.

“I’ve been looking for cabinetmakers who are trade qualified and I can’t find them. I’ve managed to hire a guy who had been out of the game for a while and I also hired an apprentice who didn’t work out,” he said.

“Some of the big companies in Cairns have let staff go and I thought with all of them looking for work, I could get them to

come up here.

“But they either don’t want to relocate or work up here on the Tablelands. Most of the people who apply for my jobs are backpackers with no qualifications.”

Wayne said that lot of employers are complaining that they can’t get staff as potential employees would rather stay on JobSeeker.

“A lot of people don’t want to work due to JobSeeker, I get applications from people who are unqualified and who don’t want the job, they have to apply for a certain amount of positions every week, so they can keep getting paid,” said Mr Costa.

Jillian Trout, who is the General Manager of recruiting firm Q.I.T.E, doesn’t believe that it’s all about the money.

“In the past if someone declined work there was a report we could put through to Centrelink and then Centrelink could suspend their payments,” she said.

“But during COVID there were no reports to be put through to Centrelink, so there were no mutual obligations. So people wouldn’t be penalised

for knocking back a job.

“Those reports came back as of last week, when the Prime Minister has announced that refusal of work will be reported to Centrelink and then jobseekers may lose their payments.”

Ms Trout said that the new rules are a welcome relief.

“Yes there has been some experiences with people turning down work,” she said.

“Some reasoning is valid due to travel or a lack of transport and there has also been a backlog at the department of transport for people to get there licence.”

According to The Department of Education, Skills and Employment on August 4, job seekers with employment service providers must: • Participate in at least one phone or online appointment with their provider, review and agree to a Job Plan.

• Conduct up to four job searches, monthly.

• Participate in activities – either online or in person, if available and safe to do so.

• Accept suitable paid work.

Charity walk to donate to locals

WALKING FUNDRAISER: The annual ‘Speewah to the Hat’ charity walk this weekend will raise funds for a local family or families in need.

THE annual ‘Speewah to the Hat’ charity walk is scheduled for this weekend with more than 100 hikers set to make the trek from Speewah down to the Red Beret Hotel with all proceeds going to locals in need.

The walk has been going for over seven years with the last three years being a fundraising event to help people in need.

The idea was brought up to organiser of the walk, Mick

Dowling, to raise money to help drought stricken farmers in need and so for the past three years it has become a charity walk with a new recipient chosen each year.

This year however the money will not be going where it usually does, Mr Dowling has decided to put the money raised to someone struggling within the 4881 district to receive the money raised.

People on the walk and others within the district are able to nominate someone who is “down and out and in need,” Mr Dowling said.

“I’ve put it out there for people to put in submissions to us as to who could really do with a helping hand.

“We will pick a couple of them and announce them on the day of the walk.”

The walk takes people from

the Speewah Camp Ground down to the Red Beret Hotel in Redlynch going through the Douglas and Smith tracks down into Stoney Creek and finally into the Red Beret where they get some drinks and a well-deserved feed.

“It just started as a group of friends decided to go for a walk and has evolved into what it is now,” Mr Dowling said.

“It’s a bit of a combination day out in nature, having some fun in the sun and winding up with a couple of cold beers at the end.

“Everyone gets at the Red Beret at their own pace and leisure.”

The walk will take place on this Sunday, August 16 at 10am.

The walk however is already at capacity and therefore any new expressions of interest will have to be turned away.

NATIONAL Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s day

was celebrated on August 4 and this year the Mulungu Aborigi-

nal Corporation chose to mark the event with a kid’s day at

Davies Park in Mareeba.

On display were health and education providers, kids jumping castle, face painting, fire trucks and lots of information for parents on bringing up healthy and happy children.

Family services team leader at Mulungu, Tania Yow-Yeh, said that the aim of the day was to reconnect with the community by having a day for children.

“The theme of the day is elders of tomorrow; it’s a day to for us to celebrate our children and our future leaders,” she said.

“We really want our families in the community to be proud of their children.

“We want to focus on having children and helping families so family care services are here to lend support, we also have a child and maternal health van here, and our deadly choices store is here.”

CEO of Mulungu, Aunty Gail Wason said that the day was all about kids having fun.

“We have just come out of the COVID lockdown, so today we wanted to celebrate Children’s Day and be inclusive of all children and their families,” Ms Wason said.

“It’s all about keeping our children safe and being good parents and raising good children.

“Children’s Day is a time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities and all Australians to celebrate

the strengths and culture of our children.”

Ms Wason also said that the day is an opportunity to show support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

“It’s a day to learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child,” she said.

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day has been run annually since 1988 and is the initiative of SNAICC – National Voice for our Children.

Top studs looking forward to Beef Open Day ONE of the regions top beef studs is looking forward to throwing open their gates for this Sunday’s Tablelands Better Beef Open Day. Stephen Pearce from the Telpara Hills stud at Marnane Road in Tolga will have a huge selection of 100 Bulls and 36 stud heifers on display.

The open day will be a prelude to their on-property sale which is being held at the same location on Friday, September 18.

Mr Pearce said he was originally involved with an open day in South Australia back in 1995.

“We were part of the southern beef field day and it was a huge success so when this opportunity became available it was something that we wanted to be part of,” he said.

“The Open Day is a great chance to view the sale lots at your own pace and with no pressure.

“It’s not just the top 20 bulls that are impressive. Every single one of the 136 bulls and females is top quality. We think buyers at every budget will go home happy.

“There is a big enough selection that there will be a bull for every market and every budget.”

“We normally go to Rocky and Roma and had incredible success in selling our cattle, and we have also sold privately,” said Mr Pearce “But now we are trying something different where everybody can come on one day and it will be a level playing field and see all the bulls at the same time.

“It will be the first sale of its type this Far North in Queensland.

“We are hoping by having the on property auction everybody will get value for money.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and border closures Ste-

ve said that they will also be streaming the auction on line and that people from around the world will be able to bid.

“The COVID closures will put pressure on us as we sell lots to NSW and Victoria, so by having it streaming online we are hoping to solve that problem,” he said.

The Tablelands Better Beef Open day is on this Sunday, August 16 from 9am to 5pm, with 11 studs across the region opening their gates to the public.

Mareeba Lions has lost a good Lion. Lion Ian Blain passed away recently leaving wife Cassie and a large extended family mourning him. Ian was only a Lion for a short time but proved himself by serving at many events in the spirit of Lionism. Vale Lion Ian. Mareeba Lions recently contributed $2,000.00 to the Mareeba Men’s Shed which together with a grant from the Australian Lions Foundation enabled the Shed to complete necessary drainage works at the Men’s Shed site.

Mareeba Lions has over many years collected used linen and library books for distribution in Papua New Guinea. Earlier this year with the generous assistance of Stephen Srhoj Rural Office Manager Lindsay Transport, two half ton pumpkin boxes full of books were trucked to Brisbane where they were packed into containers for the trip to P.N.G. Ms Del Cole CEO of Someone Who Cares arranged the containers and transport to PNG. The project was ably assisted by Q3 Brisbane Jindalee Lion Ms Lenore Howard. The First Lady of Papua New Guinea, Rachael

Marape, visited the depot at Underwood to check on the progress of the containers as they were being packed for despatch to the PNG Highlands. The Containers will carry books and linen from Mareeba as well as school desks/chairs etc. First Lady Rachael expressed her sincere thanks from herself, her husband, and the people of PNG. She said the support they're receiving from caring Australians is very much appreciated.

Men’s Sheds receive a helping hand

THE health and wellbeing of men in Far North Queensland has been given a helping hand through the latest funding round of the National Shed Development Programme.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch announced the decision by the Australian Government to award the Kuranda and Cooktown Men’s Sheds with funding of $4000 and $4504 respectively.

“I’m pleased the Kuranda and Cooktown Men’s Sheds will now be able to get on with some much-needed works and

projects with this funding,” Mr Entsch said.

“The Kuranda Men’s Shed will use their funding towards improvements to their shed while the Cooktown Men’s Shed will use the funding to purchase additional tools and equipment.

“Now more than ever Men’s Sheds offer men a critical avenue for social support and engagement.

“To stay healthy, we need to do regular activities with the people around us, and our local men’s shed has become a focal

point for Cairns and Far North Queensland communities.”

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said that belonging to a social group was vitally important for emotional and mental health.

“Men’s Sheds are a fantastic way for men to stay connected with their communities,” Mr Hunt said.

“The Morrison Government remains committed to supporting men’s sheds and encouraging men to meet up and get involved with meaningful community projects.”

Daryl Douglass, who is the secretary of the Kuranda Men's Shed, said that the money will be put to good use.

“We will be using the money to upgrade our security system and by getting CCTV,” he said.

“Where we are located is pretty remote and there are not a lot of people around, so up scaling our security system is a great thing for our shed and our members.

“We are really grateful that we have received this money and it will be put to good use.”

AS more cars hit the road after the COVID-19 lockdowns the Agile Wallaby Project has noticed an increase in deaths in wallabies across Far North Queensland.

Rescuers from the Agile Wallaby Project estimate that they have attended about 750 incidents over the past year.

This means they are in need of more volunteers to help with the rescue of joeys and injured wallabies.

This Friday night the organisation will be holding a rescue course at Trinity Beach from 5pm.

Agile Project founder Shai Ager said they are in urgent need of rescuers.

“Rescuers go out to wallaby calls outs – for wallabies that have been hit by cars or attacked by dogs,” she said.

“People will get taught how to check pouches, how to remove baby joeys without hurt-

ing them, and then passing the joey onto first responders and carers.

“This means you aren’t stuck with joey long term.”

The course is $15 per person and includes lessons on how to rescue macropods and a rescue pack for each participant.

“We are looking for people right across FNQ from Cooktown to the Tablelands and to the south of Cairns,” Shai said.

“We have a few dedicated rescuers and they sometimes need a break or are not available.”

People under the age of 16 can attend, however they must be accompanied by an adult and will share their information pack.

▶ 1 cauliflower head ▶ 1/2 cup hot cooking water ▶ 1/2 chicken stock cube ▶ 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese ▶ 1/4 teaspoon salt ▶ salt and pepper, to taste ▶ nutmeg, to taste (optional)

Method

1. Clean the cauliflower head from green leaves, and chop it into reasonably large but manageable pieces. Place it in the big sauce pan with water, bring to boil and boil for 30-40 minutes until cauliflower is really soft.

2. Remove from heat and drain cauliflower from water. You should have about 3 and 1/2 cups of cooked and sliced cauliflower pieces.

3. Dissolve 1/2 of a chicken stock cube in 1/2 cup of boiling water.

4. In a food processor, combine drained cooked cauliflower and 1/2 cup of boiling water with 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and process really well, until a very creamy sauce forms: 5. Transfer sauce into a large sauce pan and keep it warm on the stove top. Season with salt and pepper, and nutmeg (optional), to taste.

New footys for juniors BOTH the Mareeba and Atherton Junior Rugby League teams have received an influx of some brand new balls to use courtesy of Incitec Pivot Fertilisers.

The balls were donated after Regional Business Manager for Incitec Pivot Fertilisers Rik Maatan asked his local tableland customers what he can do to help the recovering sporting industry locally.

Nutrien Ag Solutions Tolga was the partner in delivering the new balls to the Atherton club while Tableland Fertilisers Mareeba was the donating partner for the Mareeba club.

The decision was then reached to donate a dozen new footballs and ball bag to the junior clubs to help them get ahead on their training leading into their 2020 season.

Mr Maatan was onboard to help give the local kids in the community an edge and some

new updated playing equipment “We talked to our customers and they said it would be great to get in and support the local junior football clubs as everyone’s getting back into some physical activity so we’ve jumped in behind them,” he said.

President for the Atherton Junior Rugby League Ben Fahlstrom was very excited to receive this donation and says that they will be put to good use.

“It’s excellent we are actually in the process of acquiring some new balls,” he said.

“It’s a big deal to get these balls that way we can share more of them around to the kids.

“Anything we can get, any donation it helps with everything.”

The new balls will be going to the older age groups of both clubs as the balls are international size balls.

World number one visits FNQ TENNIS players got the chance of a lifetime after world number one Ashleigh (Ash) Barty made a visit to the Cairns International Tennis Centre to play some sets against locals and help launch their new roof.

Ash currently ranks as the world number one Tennis player in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association and was joined by fellow Queensland tennis players John Millman, Lizette Cabrera and John-Patrick Smith.

The redevelopment of the

Cairns International Tennis Centre roof structure has been a $2.7 million project funded through the Federal Government’s Building Our Future Regional Jobs and Investment Package (RJIP) to the value of $997,000, with the Cairns Regional Council contributing $1.7 million to the project.

Mrs Barty was astounded by the new project and what it means for not only professional tennis but at the grassroots level as well and was able to be the

“It’s incredible I haven’t actually been up here to play tennis at this centre before so it was nice to come up and to see the roof,” she said.

“It’s going to do massive things not just for professional tennis but also for grassroots tennis.

Bulls steady improvement THE Mareeba United Football Clubs men’s premier team continued their steady improvement against a very mediocre Marlin Coast Rangers side on Sunday afternoon.

From the outset, the Bulls took control and set up house in the Rangers half of the field, but poor finishing and lack of composure in front of goal frustrated fans who thought it was going to be a stroll in the park.

Some fine work by Dean Alterio on the right flank set up Darcy McCormack to put the Bulls’ one up deep in the first half. The second half began much the same as the first with the strikers missing numerous opportunities to put the Bulls further ahead.

A penalty decision against the Rangers keeper saw Dylan Cumming step up and give Mareeba a 2-0 lead. Darcy McCormack struck a second late in the match to give the bulls a 3-0 win.

As is customary, the ref-

eree was the talking point of the match for decisions that are clearly set out in the games rules and regulations. Should a professional foul in the first 30 seconds of a match be any different to a foul in the last minute of a game?

The answer is no.

MCR keeper, as the last defender, brought down a Mareeba striker just outside the eighteen yard area with a clear scoring opportunity in the first 30 seconds of the match. The result was nothing: The rules state that if brought down by the last defender intentionally, in the case the Goalkeeper, a red card send-off should have been the result. Yet for some reason the ref saw that it wasn’t a foul on the striker but then failed to issue a yellow card infringement to the striker for simulation (diving). Consistency in decision making by the games regulators makes for happy players and more spectators to watch our game.

Eagles ready for weekend local derby AN under-strength Atherton Eagles played away to the Marlin Coast Rangers on Friday night.

Coming off the back of a 1-1 draw, the eagles were keen to take the three points. The opening 15 minutes were cagey, with both sides registering shots.

Marlin Coast however took the most of their chances and got themselves 1 up at the break.

With 3 key Eagles out due to injury; they were reliant on some of the youth players stepping up.

The eagles started off the second half strong. However, their efforts were undone due to some poor defence errors.

The Eagles did enjoy a large amount of possession however couldn’t capitalize any of their chances when needed. They ended up going down 4-0.

The Eagles will have to put this behind them and look towards this Friday night as they host the Mareeba Bulls in the local derby at the Atherton International Club at 7.30pm.

Inaugural cycling event “huge success” THE inaugural MiHaven Mareeba Tour hosted by the Cairns Cycling Club has been hailed a success with 90 athletes competing over the two day tour.

The MiHaven Tour was established earlier in the year and gave local businesses a much needed income boost with many of the riders staying in town and eating out.

The tour hosted some of the best riders in North Queensland with over $2000 in prize money shared between the junior and senior competitors.

Mareeba Shire Council Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies was on hand to help start some of the races and was excited for much needed funds to be injected back

into the community.

“This kind of an event brings money to the region that normally wouldn’t get to the Mareeba Shire,” he said.

“If we can encourage more of these events and welcome them with local arms it all benefits our shire.

“It’s a sporting event and everyone loves sport around this town.”

Cairns Cycling Club President Richie Bates was ecstatic with the first year tour and the turn out that it got.

“Rider entries exceeded our expectations and the racing was outstanding given the uninterrupted sports season and quick preparation needed,” he said.

“I couldn’t have been happier with the support we received from the Mareeba Shire and community.

“This really is an event with strong potential for growth and it will complement our existing calendar of event beautifully.”

There is huge room for this event to grow as there can be more circuits done for the tour with a boost coming for the local economy and local tourism.

The Mareeba Shire Council would like to express its thanks to the Cairns Cycling Club and the committee for hosting the MiHaven Tour in Mareeba and all the competitors that participated and travelled to make the event a success.
