Family pet recovers from gun shot

A LOCAL family is breathing a sigh of relief as their beloved Golden Retriever is now expected to make a full recovery after being shot in the Yungaburra area last week.

On Wednesday, June 17 Kaydee Chatfield from Yungaburra came home to discover her dogs had gone missing.

After searching the local area for a few hours she discovered the dogs nearby, one of her dogs was fine, but her much loved Golden Retriever, Marlee was laying in the middle of the road unable to move.

At first, Kaydee thought that Marlee had been hit by a car.

After taking Marlee to the vet, she was originally told that the leg was fractured but after an X-ray, the vet discovered that Marlee had been shot.

At the time Kaydee posted on Facebook “Someone shot my Marlee, someone stood, aimed and fired at my baby.

She was wearing a collar, indicating that she is owned, loved and part of a family and her fate was not for you to decide.”

“She is a golden retriever for god's sake, and what’s worse is you didn’t even kill her you cruel bastard. You left her with a shattered leg, unable to walk on it and beyond repair.”

After the post went viral, a go fund me page was set up to help pay for Marlee’s vet bill.

At the time of printing $2900 had been raised.

Initially, Kaydee thought that Marlee’s leg would have to be amputated but after a second opinion, it was decided that the leg could be saved.

Marlee was picked up from the vet on Friday, June 26 and Kaydee said the Marlee is expected to make a full recovery.

“As long as Marlee doesn’t run and stays quiet she should make a full recovery,” said Kaydee.

“There is a plate in her leg but that will stay there even after the bone has healed.”

So far Kaydee's vet bills have come to $1200 for X-rays and $3500 for the operation.

The incident has been reported to the Police and Kaydee says they've been questioning residents around Kulara Drive in Yungaburra, so far with no success.

“We also have a $500 reward to be given to anyone – no questions asked with any information leading to the whereabouts of this gutless coward,” Kaydee said.

“We are just happy to have her home; it’s the best outcome for a horrible scenario. She hasn’t been put down, her leg doesn't have to be amputated, and people have helped us to pay the vet's bill, we couldn’t ask for anything more.”

TRC shuts down sham department

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti voted to end the TRCE.

BY PHIL BRANDEL TABLELANDS Regional Council wasted no time in shutting down a “sham” department after it was revealed that it had lost approximately half a million dollars with no results and no guarantee that Council would ever get the money back.

At last Thursday’s ordinary Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting, it was resolved to de-register the Tablelands

Regional Council Enterprise (TRCE).

The TRCE was originally set up as a separate entity to the Council in May 2018 as a way to increase council revenue by initiating smart infrastructure and to investigate alternative commercial revenue streams.

It’s believed that the TRC supplied $285,000 in funding to the TRCE, including the CEO’s wage of $140,000 per annum.

It’s believed that the above

amounts may increase due to missing paperwork with Mayor Rod Marty telling the ABC last Friday that “somewhere in the vicinity of half million dollars has gone down the gurgler.”

The TRCE CEO resigned suddenly and effectively on February 3, 2020.

A report tabled at last weeks meeting by TRC CEO Bob Owen said, “In the opinion of the staff, no useful, practical or real outcomes have been achieved by

TRCE.” “The most recent deal allegedly negotiated by the TRCE CEO appears to be sham and no projects promoted by TRCE appear to be viable based on past performance and available information.

“Some council staff had difficulties with TRCE, including obtaining detailed information to undertake due diligence and in negotiating agreements,” Mr Owen said.

At the time Council tried to enter into an agreement with TRCE to limit the liability of Council and the amount committed by council without success.

During the meeting it was also mentioned that it seemed like money, invoices and bank statements were missing.

Council voted unanimously to start the process to de-register the TRCE. CEO Bob Owen said that more details would be available once a full report into funds and spending by the TRCE was completed. Once that information becomes available the board and the TRC could sign the documents needed to officially end the organisation.

Mayor Rod Marti said that Council would undertake a forensic investigation to look into TRCE’s accounts to “Find out how much money has gone in and where it went.”

Funding for better Shire roads THE Commonwealth and Queensland Governments have announced that they have decided to jointly invest an additional $415 million dollars in infrastructure projects and urgent road safety upgrades.

The package includes $14 million to upgrade the Burke Developmental Road and $37.5 million to carry out safety upgrades on the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Atherton.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said she welcomed the funding announcement.

“It is excellent to see the Commonwealth and the Queensland Governments working together to support infrastructure projects across the state to improve road safety,” Cr Toppin said.

“Council has advocated for many years for the upgrade of the Burke Developmental Road between Almaden and Chillagoe and with the additional $14 million I am hopeful that this will complete the missing links.”

While details of works are yet to be revealed, Councillor Toppin said it would

be a massive win for the Chillagoe community and the many industries that rely on the road as a vital transport corridor for freight connectivity to have the BDR fully sealed.

The Kennedy Highway will also undergo safety upgrades to improve travel times and ease congestion.

“I am pleased the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Atherton had been identified for urgent safety upgrades,” Mayor Toppin said.

The Mayor thanked the Commonwealth and the Queensland Governments for the ongoing commitments to provide economic and employment opportunities within the Shire.

“This funding will provide a welcome economic boost for the Shire following COVID-19,” Cr Toppin said.

“I sincerely thank the Commonwealth and the Queensland the Governments for the ongoing support and commitment to improving the liveability of the Shire by investing in key infrastructure projects,” Cr Toppin concluded.

People smuggler arrested in Mareeba A CHINESE national appeared in Mareeba Magistrates Court on Wednesday, June 24 charged with being part of an international people-smuggling ring.

Mr Xufie Liu was remanded in custody after being refused bail by Magistrate Thomas Braes, after hearing that the accused had possible access to large amounts of cash and alleged links to people smugglers.

Mr Liu was charged after Australian Federal Police (AFP) raided his home in Mareeba on Tuesday, June 23.

The arrest comes after Mr Liu and an accomplice, a 30-year-old from Newcastle had been under police surveillance for almost six months.

The two men first came to the attention of investigators when they called Northern Territory Police asking for help after their car became stuck at a flooded water crossing in a remote part of the Territory.

to explain why they were there, which initiated surveillance of the pair.

At the same time, an Indonesian fishing boat with six Chinese nationals on board was intercepted at Ashmore Reef off the Western Australian coast

by Border Force officials and turned-back towards Indonesia.

What wasn't known at the time was the correlation between the boat intercept and the rescue of the two stranded men.

The pair's movements and communications were monitored until raids were launched on their homes in Newcastle and Mareeba last week.

At the raids, police seized visa applications, mobile phones, computers, and other documents.

It’s alleged that the pair were meant to be the shore party, meeting the illegal boat when it was due to land in the NT. The AFP claims that in return for passage to Australia, the six men would “have to undertake work for a year without income

in debt bondage” to repay the smuggling syndicate.

Both men have been charged with facilitating "the entry of a group of five or more unlawful non-citizens into Australia, contrary to section 233C of the Migration Act 1958. This carries a maximum 20-year sentence with a mandatory 3-year minimum sentence.

In documents tendered to the court, Mr Liu has a licence to operate a labour-hire company on the Tablelands, supplying labour to local farmers including a local avocado farm.

His company Jinli International Management pty ltd has now had its labour hire licence suspended by the Office of Industrial relations.

It was also revealed that Mr Liu had been in Australia for the past 8-9 years on a spousal visa and that he has a wife who lives in Sydney.

The case is due to be mentioned in court on September 7, 2020.

Coroner finds driver unfit to drive THE Far Northern Coroner has found that the driver responsible for Ravenshoe cafe explosion in 2015 was unfit to drive.

Brian Scutt, then 60, was driving when he suffered a seizure, with his ute ploughing into the rear of the Serves You Right Cafe on Grigg Street in Ravenshoe, hitting gas bottles which ignited a huge explosion.

At the time The Queensland Ambulance Service treated 21 patients, 20 of whom were taken to hospital.

Eleven patients were driven to Atherton Hospital, three went to Innisfail Hospital, while the remaining six patients were airlifted to Cairns and Townsville hospitals.

Earlier this year a coroner’s inquest into the cause of the explosion took place at Ravenshoe and Cairns.

The findings were handed down on June 26 with Coroner Nerida Wilson finding that Mr Scutt was medically unfit to hold a drivers licence and should not

have been driving.

Both Mr Scutt and his GP, Dr Ken Connolly, could not give evidence as both men died before the start of the inquest.

The Coroner found that Mr Scutt had suffered at least three seizures in the decade leading up to the crash, but had not properly disclosed his condition to Dr Connolly.

He also failed to disclose that other medical professionals had advised him not to drive.

Despite Mr Scutt’s failure to disclose, Dr Connolly became aware in 2014 that his patient had suffered seizures through information provided in medical notes.

Ms Wilson said there was no evidence Dr Connolly discussed Mr Scutt’s condition with him.

She said Dr Connolly did not fulfil his professional duty to notify the Department of Transport.

“If Dr Connolly did make enquires with Mr Scutt, he did not make notes of these, which is also poor practice,” she said.

Mr Scutt’s widow Robyn Scutt told the inquest her partner

of 25 years “loved” to drive, but that she warned him three days before the crash not to do so.

“I had a sit-down talk with him and said, ‘Look Brian, I’m really concerned about you driving and I’m concerned you might kill somebody’,” she told the court.

She said Mr Scutt had suffered at least five major seizures, and often refused medical assistance.

The inquest heard Mr Scutt would turn ambulances away after having seizures and often refused to go to hospital.

In 2018, the Queensland Mental Health Court ruled Mr Scutt mentally unfit to face criminal charges.

Grower owned mill fires up for first cane season

“Some of the farmers have come from the co-op environment and they feel they are worse off now than they were before deregulation,” she said.

“I’m really excited about the prospect of the grower owned mill and we are working pretty hard to make sure we achieve all the goals we want to achieve.”

BY PHIL BRANDEL THE cane crushing season is looked forward to across Far North Queensland, but nowhere has it been more exciting than the Mossman Mill.

The grower-owned mill has now started crushing for its very first full season since being bought by local growers last year.

In July 2019 local farmers and growers bought the mill from Mackay Sugar who had owned the site since 2012.

Far Northern Milling Company Pty Ltd was formed to op-

erate the mill on behalf of the 69 owner growers from both Mossman and the Tablelands.

CEO Bronwyn Dwyer said firing up the mill last week was a great success.

“After 28 months of negotiations to purchase the mill, we have put a lot of maintenance and capital back into the mill during the off season, so it’s been very exciting to start our first season properly,” she said.

“We are hoping that the extra money will lead to increased reliability for this season.”

The Mossman Mill was purchased in July last year, part of the way through the 2019 crush-

ing season meaning that it was a partial season under the grower owned model.

“This year will be our first season full season under the new grower owned entity.”

“The 150 permanent workers at the mill have had their work cut out completing a 10-million dollar maintenance and capital expenditure program.

“This included a complete re-building and re-tubing of one of the boilers.”

Far Northern Milling is planning on crushing 702,000 tonnes this year through the Mossman mill.

PETITION: Current Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup champion Tracey Hannah trains on the Kuranda Range and wants more trails opened up.

Petition to make Kuranda a new mountain biking hotspot KURANDA could soon become a new mountain bike hub after an online petition was launched to expand mountain bike tracks across the region.

Tony Trafford is the man behind the petition to put Far North Queensland on bike rider’s maps and he believes that the Far North has the potential to be the number one mountain biking destination in the world.

The idea came after a ride in Smithfield with some friends.

“I said it’s an idea that really needs to happen. I said someone should do something, because nobody had, so I thought I should be that someone,” said Mr Trafford.

“We started a petition to get the state governments support through our website.

“David Crisafulli, the Shadow Minister for Tourism will be tabling the idea in Parliament on July 17.”

Stage 1 of the mountain bike master plan is to add 55 kms of bike trails around the Smithfield area.

Stage 2 is to upgrade the Kuranda downhill and stage 3 is adding Skyrail extensions using the Skyrail access road and then adding all the links together.

“The trails will only be about 40–50cm wide so we don’t need to cut down trees, we could be ready within three months,” Tony said.

“We want to have over 120km’s of mountain bike trails across the entire Far North and then people will come and stay in Kuranda. With that many bike trails, they will stay 4-5 days to

try all the different tracks.

“Most people only ride for the 3-4 hours per day, so after their ride, they will drive to Davies Creek or Mareeba or Atherton to have a look around.”

According to Tony, the tipping point is 85-90kms of trails.

“If you have that amount of trails with various difficulties it becomes a real mountain bike destination like it is in Tasmania and New Zealand,” he said.

“At the moment Skyrail doesn’t have the capability to fit Mountain bikes onto their gondolas, but we have been talking to them about the way the gondolas work with the mountain bikers in Queenstown New Zealand.”

“The Mountain Bike economy is always there and we are looking at this like a ski resort, where people can buy season passes and use the different trails all year round.

“Our vision is to attract 50,000 to 75,000 domestic and international mountain bikers to our region, injecting $35-$50 million per year into the local economy.”

The master plan includes an upgrade to the Kuranda Downhill track to attract a wider variety of riders, including improving the Black Trail, a new medium level Blue Trail and a new Green Trail for beginners.

opening up the trails would be a boon for Kuranda and Far North tourism.

“At the moment it’s not the easiest place to ride, we sometimes get locked out of the trails and that’s why it has never really taken off,’ she said.

“In 2016 when I raced in the world championship here, the trail was locked and we couldn’t even practice on it.

“When you race on a track overseas you think ‘these people are going to have a home track advantage’ we don’t get that when racing here, we don’t get that support as the tracks are gated off.”

Ms Hannah says that if rules were relaxed and more trails opened up it would encourage more visitors and a mountain bike riding community in the region.

“I used the Kuranda track to train on to become the World Champion, so expanding it would not only bring tourists but some of the top-level riders from around the world to train and ride here,” said Ms Hannah.

Petition organiser, Mr Trafford said there’s also other options and opportunities for Kuranda.

“We could have trails starting in Kuranda and going to Stony Creek or the Barron Gorge and if riders can get their bikes onto the gondolas, Kuranda would also be used for bikes and food supplies” he said.

“It could be a great lifeline for Kuranda.”

Mayors join to CHHHS committees TWO new mayors have been appointed members of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service’s (CHHHS) community consultation committees.

Rod Marti from the Tablelands Regional Council and Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr have both joined the committees as local government representatives.

The health service has four Consumer and Community Consultation Committees, which aim to provide advice to CHHHS about local health care services, from a consumer and community perspective.

The four committees are Cassowary, Trinity, Hinterland and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health committee (representative of traditional owner groups).

The committees are comprised of community members, one Health Service local staff member and representatives from the local councils.

CHHHS have announced the appointment of the following committee members to the Hinterland Hub: Robyn Boundy (Chair), MSC Mayor Angela Toppin, John Reghenzani, Josephine Barnes, Jenifer Pugh and TRC Mayor Rod Marti.

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board Chair Clive Skarott said consumer partnership were vital to improve the quality of healthcare services delivered.

“I am strong believer that our health service needs to be connected with our community so we can meet our community’s needs,” Mr Skarott said.

Malanda RSL looking for saviour AFTER several months of ‘sorry we are closed’ on Friday, June 19 the Malanda RSL got to say “Come on in we are open” for the first time in several months.

Even though COVID restrictions limited the numbers, many locals were still keen to drop in, say hello, have a chat and a drink or two at the RSL. Friday night they opened for a just a few short hours to see what the turn out and support would be like.

The club has been struggling for several years, financially it has been breaking even and the staff at the club are members and volunteers.

18 months ago the club went to the public to ask for financial assistance to keep the doors open.

On Tuesday night, June 23, the board and members held a

meeting to discuss the financial viability of the club and came to the conclusion that they needed a professional or a corporation running the club.

Club president Darryl Cummings said that “These days with COVID it hasn’t been financially viable for us to hire a manager so financially it may be better to lease the premises rather than employ someone.”

“We are now looking to see if someone would pay us to lease the whole club,” he said.

Former real estate agent and current club member John Lilley has taken on the task of either leasing or selling the club.

“At the meeting we have come to the conclusion that our business model is not working and what we have elected to do is find someone to lease the club off us or buy the building off

us,” said Mr Lilley.

“We realise that once it does go into private hands it would be up to the owner to decide what to do with the club.

“But before we could sign off on paperwork we would need to go to the members and get majority approval.”

Due to COVID restrictions the club will now be open Monday to Thursday from 3pm–6pm and on Friday nights from 3pm to 7pm.

“We are not opening on Saturday nights at the moment, we are just testing the market,” Mr Lilley said.

“We are looking for a white knight or a rich benefactor that wants to invest back into the community.”

AVIATION fans will soon have a new location to add to their itinerary with an aviation museum set for Mareeba getting one step closer.

The Far North Queensland Aviation Museum (FNQAM) has been holding meetings with the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) about leasing arrangements at the airport.

Secretary of the FNQAM Brendan Kent said, “We had a lease meeting recently and the council is very supportive of our project we are just in the process of formalising the lease agreements.”

At the moment the museum’s board and members are in the process of installing pedestrian access and storage containers to create a members area and site office.

“It’s a pretty big project that we are staging out, in total we are looking at a $3-5 million dollar project in its entirety,” Mr Kent said.

Plans to build Stage 1 of the expansion project which are forecast for later this year include preserving World War 2 buildings and converting them into museum displays.

The FNQ Aviation Museum board is separate to the alreadyexisting FNQ Aviation Museum and Memorials.

“We already have a mini museum set up in the Mareeba Airport terminal building and a World War 2 memorial. We are now looking for a place to expand into, the items on display in the terminal are just a small taste of what’s to come,” said Mr Kent.

“We are looking to display anything that is of heritage value to Mareeba and the Far north, including US bombers that were stationed here during World War 2 including an Australian Boomerang fighter.”

Mr Kent also announced their 2020 appeal by asking people to donate and help them create the very first communitybased museum in Mareeba since World War 2.

EULUMA DROUGHTMASTERS BUDGET: Cook Shire Council have handed down their 2020/20 budget.

THE Cook Shire Council (CSC) has adopted a “constrained and responsible” 2020-21 budget that will ensure continued levels of community service despite the significant decrease in revenue due to COVID-19.

The Council’s budget was by necessity a conservative one following the wave of natural disasters in previous years and the current worldwide pandemic.

CSC Mayor Peter Scott has stated that the new budget was handed down taking into account the strain that COVID-19 has put on the residents of the Shire.

“We recognise the broad business and employment downturn and have halted or

minimised rate increases despite our operational costs increasing in line and above the Consumer Price Index,” he said.

“Despite the challenges Council has been successful in obtaining grant funding.

“This funding will help to deliver a healthy capital works program and operational initiatives, boosting our local economy and communities.”

General residential rates, light industry rates, caravan park, hotel and motel rates have not increased to better support the recovering local economy.

The CSC’s capital works program budget is over $25 million with the majority of those funds being through grants.

Key projects that will be supported by the capital works are water and sewer works in Coen, Cooktown, Laura and Lakeland, upgrades to Jensen’s Crossing Bridge, Portland Roads intersections and Battlecamp Road and shade at the Cooktown waterfront.

“We have introduced a modest 1.5 per cent increase for primary and agricultural production and no increase for lifestyle fees such as pool and library fees,” Cr Scott said.

LOCALS will get the chance to help fight hunger by supporting Coles’ new national appeal in partnership with SecondBite and deliver nutritious meals to vulnerable Australians.

New research released by SecondBite, a food rescue organisation has revealed that nine out of ten of their surveyed food relief charity partners had been impacted by COVID-19 and more than 80 per cent have seen an increase in demand for food relief. $2 SecondBite donation cards are now being offered for purchase at Coles and every card purchased provides the equivalent of 10 meals to Australians in need.

Worker shortage worries

CONCERNS that international border closures could mean a lack of viable workers, may force local farmers to leave their fruit to rot on the ground.

With Australia’s international borders closed, farmers across Far North Queensland are worried there won’t be enough seasonal labour to pick their crops in the coming summer months.

Marie Piccone is the owner and managing director of one of Australia's largest mango producers, Manbulloo Limited, they are also the largest grower of Kensington Prides and one of the largest growers of R2s in Australia.

Ms Piccone started Manbulloo in 2005 with three farms, at Katherine, Horseshoe Lagoon, and Laudham Park near Townsville.

The operation expanded in 2014-15 with the purchase of three more farms on the Tablelands.

With over 1,000 hectares of mangoes due to be picked from October, she is desperate for experienced Pacific Islander workers, who have harvested her trees for the last few years, to be allowed back into the country.

“If we try to use inexperienced labour on our machines, they pick fruit at about a third or a quarter of the speed of the experienced workers,” she said.

“If we don’t have the right experience out there we won’t get the crop off in time.”

Ms Piccone said that they have about a 70 percent return rate from their Pacific island workers which allows them to train up new staff quickly and efficiently.

“We are happy to have Australians in the packing houses out of the heat and in a situation where we can train them,” she said.

“Out in the field we know that you can’t beat our previous seasonal workers. Some of our workers have been coming back and working for us for 11

or 12 seasons now.”

With seven per cent unemployment a lot of Australians will be looking for work but Ms Piccone says she has seen Australians walk off the job after 1-2 days.

“We are happy to hire unemployed Australians in the pack house, but in the field it’s too hot and difficult for most people,” said Ms Piccone.

“I can’t just walk onto a mine site and drive one of their trucks and it’s like that on a mango farm. It takes a while to train someone to be able to use our equipment.

“We have been exploring finding other seasonal workers already here in Australia, but we know, based on government data, that there will be a worker

shortage.”

Ms Piccone also said any talk of an Australian and New Zealand bubble should include countries like Samoa and Vanuatu which have not had any recorded cases of COVID-19.

“They can be tested before they leave home; they could isolate on my farms for 14 days and before starting work they would be tested again,” she said.

“We are happy to follow any protocols the Australian Government decides needs to be done to make this happen.”

by COVID-19 on top of the many challenges thrown up by Mother Nature.

Rising Beyond Now: Strategies for Health, Life and Business is a joint project by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), Sisters of the North and the Queensland Rural Regional and Remote Women’s Network (QRRRWN).

The webinars started on Tuesday, June 23 and are held every Tuesday for the next six weeks. The webinars run for 45 minutes and participants will receive advice on how to optimise their professional capacity and provide practical advice on how to best manage their wellbeing.

Rural and regional Queenslanders who are having a hard time through the COVID-19 crisis are the main targets of these webinars.

Royal Flying Doctor Service Clinical Lead, Dr Tim Driscoll said that these webinars explore ways to support your health and wellbeing and even includes practical steps to assist in business.

“In recent months there have been some incredibly unique challenges posed to those living outside of major centres by the coronavirus crisis,” he said.

“We wanted to respond to that and acknowledge the ongoing challenges of drought, flood, bushfires and grasshoppers, which are impacting ru-

ral and regional Queensland.

“New challenges need new approaches, which require new skills, this series aims to provide participants with the opportunity to gain new knowledge and skills to adapt to new challenges.”

As people across rural and regional Queensland are affected differently by the effects of COVID-19 than their urban counterparts, the webinars aim to educate people on ways to respond to current conditions in the COVID-19 world.

Improved ability to deal with challenging times, new skills to deal with new demands and new knowledge and skills to improve are just some of the positive benefits Queenslanders can see getting from these webinars.

The first half of these webinars are focused on the four pillars of health and will help people ‘put on their own oxygen mask first’ as said by QRRRWN President Tracy Martin.

“People are exhausted and we want to provide some quick tips and remind people that they are important and that the way through these problems is often looking after ourselves first,” she said.

“These are tips for health, business and family and there is plenty of information out there about COVID, but this series is about you.

Ida said everybody had a great night.

Travel local WITH the school holidays upon us, the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has joined forces with Mareeba Shire Council to encourage local residents to travel locally these school holidays.

The new message comes off the back of the stay local, shop local, support local campaign that was launched by the Chamber and Council earlier this year.

The Chamber and the MSC have added to the list by asking people to “travel local”.

The message was kicked off with a video of Mayor Angela Toppin sitting down at the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre with Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro, going over some of the local attractions that resi-

dents can visit due the current school holidays.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin is encouraging everyone to ‘holiday here’ these school holidays and visit the many places and attractions across the Mareeba Shire.

“Take this opportunity to spend time with family and friends and relax and explore our wonderful Shire,” Mayor Toppin said.

“By doing this you’re still spending your money locally.

It creates opportunities for local business and creates new jobs.

“Please also take care on the roads and stay COVID-Safe.”

Mr Moro encourages residents to visit parts of the Shire that they normally wouldn’t get to see like Kuranda, Chillagoe, Irvinebank and to stop in these small towns and spend a bit of money and time there.

“We have wonderful natural features in the shire, we have agri-business, we have rainforest at Kuranda, we have great walking tracks and water holes,” said Mr Moro.

“Chillagoe has the caves and camping, 14 days is not enough time to see everything.”

Visit the Tablelands top 10 give Tablelanders an avenue to experience the regions natural beauty.

TRC Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew believes that there is nothing better than exploring our own backyard.

“We’ve released two new Top 10 brochures for the Tablelands to encourage our com-

munity and visitors to explore the amazing natural features we have right on our doorstep,” he said.

“Read the overview brochure and then choose a trail from the range of gentle, family friendly walks to overnight adventures.

The brochures are available from the Tablelands Regional Council website and from their visitor information centres located in Atherton, Herberton, Yungaburra, Ravenshoe and Malanda.

Balloons back in the sky I NEED A NAME: The unnamed baby Koala with mum Pixie.

New baby koala needs a name KURANDA Koala Gardens have a cute new addition and they’re now looking for help with naming the new bub.

The new female baby Koala is only eight months old and has just started to emerge from mum Pixies pouch.

Kuranda Koala Gardens are running a competition to help find a name for the new bub and wildlife manager Meg Markle said visitors can vote on one of three names.

“The three names to choose from, as chosen by the keepers, are Flora, Belle, or Ella,” she said.

“Normally we would have visitors cast a paper vote, but since we can’t leave things out for people to touch, they can just verbally tell their choice to a staff member located at our koala perching photo area who will be keeping a daily tally.”

To vote just visit the park anytime before July 12 and you could win a Mega Wildcard which allows two adults and two kids to visit, Kuranda Koala Gardens, Birdworld Kuranda and Hartley’s Crocodile Farm as many times as you like for 12 months, valued at $325 dollars.

BALLOONS ARE BACK: Hot air balloons returned to the skies last week.

TOURISM is well and truly taking off again on the Tablelands after the first hot air balloons launched in nearly three months.

Hot Air, who are the operators of the balloon rides stopped flying on March 22 due to COVID restrictions and the first post COVID flights returned to the air on Saturday, June 20.

Greg Daven who is the Regional Manager for Hot Air said that due to border closures and social distancing they had to stop flying.

“Due to the COVID rules our business dried up, our numbers were also down due to the bushfires over Christmas and New Year,” he said.

Mr Daven said that the business is now reliant on the State Government reopening the borders sooner rather than later.

“So much of our business now depends on the border opening and aviation access, the flight stoppages have really hurt our business,” he said.

The first flights for Hot Air were mainly locals who were keen to get up in the air.

“At the moment we are getting locals who want to go up in the balloons, it’s great to see locals enjoying the fantastic experience,” said Mr Daven.

“But we can’t survive just on locals; we need the borders to reopen and some more domestic visitors to come through.

“In the past 80 per cent of our customers have been international visitors and I can’t see international visitors returning for about another 12 months.”

During peak season Hot Air can have 4-5 balloons in the air per day, with 24 people per basket and some of the balloons doing two trips a day. This means Hot Air could be servicing around 250 people in one day.

Hot Air also has about 45 staff working in Far North Queensland.

Mr Daven says the balloons returning to the sky was a relief for him, his business and his staff.

“The amount of energy our company has spent during the

past three months with zero income has been taxing, to actually see a balloon fly again gave us all a sense of relief, it was fantastic to see,” he said.

“We have also had great feedback on all the new safety protocols we have implemented due to COVID. “With social distancing we are only putting 16 people in a balloon and we have new segregation in the balloon compartments.

“A lot of tourism businesses are now just after some certainty about border openings, so that local accommodation providers and the airlines can start planning ahead.”

A new food event set to tantalise the tastebuds TO celebrate the end of School Holidays KUR-Cow near Kuranda is holding an event to support local farmers and producers.

The very first ‘Taste of TNQ’ is happening on Sunday, July 12. The idea came about as a way to celebrate local food, wine and agricultural producers at one event.

Sharon Sou, who is the Assistant Director of Special Events at KUR-Cow Barnwell Farm, said the event is an easy way to taste the best of Tropical North Queensland.

“We have gathered local suppliers from Cairns and the Tablelands, to get people excited about our local produce,” she said.

“Now that restrictions are lifting and some local suppliers are struggling to get their name out there this is a winwin situation.”

Kur-Cow had planned on doing Taste of TNQ earlier in the year but was postponed due to COVID, Ms Sou says now is the right time.

ONE of the more unique visitor experiences on the Tablelands finally reopened over the weekend.

The Tinlander is a small historic train that runs from the Herberton railway station to the Herberton historic village platform.

Secretary of the AthertonHerberton Historic Railway Judy Cooper said it was good for local tourism as well as the volunteers to have the Tinlander running again.

“We have been closed since the initial lockdowns but now with an amended timetable we can start running again,” she said.

Over the school holidays the Tinlander will run every Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 2.30pm each day.

To help with social distancing there will be no timetable so that the Tinlander can run more frequently and have fewer passengers on each run.

“During lockdown we’ve had time to do maintenance to the carriages and the tracks,” Ms Cooper said.

A return trip is 5 dollars for adults and 3 dollars for kids with all proceeds going to the railway group who are hoping to restore a steam locomotive and wooden carriages.

“We have a 1905 Peckett locomotive that we are slowly restoring. The restoration process has slowed down due to the lack of funds and donations from lockdown, but now that we are open again we hope to have the Peckett and some carriages on the tracks soon.”

Ms Cooper says that once the steam locomotive and passenger car have been fully restored, they will replace the section cars and the ride will be extended to Carrington Falls, before going to to Wongabel and Atherton.

“Eventually the ride will finish at the Atherton railway station at Platypus Park.”

Two things prove Australia’s domestic COVID-19 lockdowns were completely unnecessary – the timeline, and the check-out operators.

The virus gained public attention in Wuhan towards the end of their Lunar New Year celebrations in late January. Up to 6 million people fled over a week or so as the Communist Party applied their lockdowns.

Many escapees were Chinese-Australians. They flew straight back here. Some dosed up on cold and flu medications

to suppress symptoms in case we were doing health checks at arrivals. We weren’t.

The virus reached Australia in January so our hospitals should have been swamped by late February. They weren’t.

Why not? COVID-19 couldn’t spread under Australia’s hot, clean conditions.

Check-out operators were our litmus test. They handled the same groceries and breathed the same air as the Wuhan escapees. They worked straight through the pre-lockdown and lockdown periods.

How many check-out operators got sick and died? None.

Sorry, but our governments and their experts saved us from nothing. Our hot climate, clean environment, good health and default hygiene saved us from the Chinese flu.

In 2006 actor/writer/presenter/director Stephen Fry said, “It’s now very common to hear people say, ‘I’m rather offended by that.’ As if that gives them certain rights.

It’s actually nothing more... than a whine. ‘I find that offensive.’ It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. ‘I am offended by that.’ Well, so what.

At the time Mr Fry was talking about blasphemy but it seems like that quote could apply to most conversations going on today.

The latest is the argument to change the name of Redskins and Chicos.

In a statement from Nestle on the future of the lollies names “These names have overtones which are out of step with Nestlé’s values, which are rooted in respect,” So when did Nestlé grow a conscience? If as they say the names have racist overtones, shouldn’t they have changed the names a long time ago?

And if Allan’s or Nestlé’s values are rooted in respect they would never had used those

names in the first place.

Is Nestlé really going to destabilise systemic racist structures just by changing the name of two of their lollies?

If Nestlé was a good corporate citizen they wouldn’t have waited for the “Black Lives matter” campaign to change the names, this is just corporate virtue signalling at its worst.

While over at the ABC, they were going to have a debate about black and white chess pieces being racist.

John Adams from the Australian Chess Federation took to twitter lambasting the ABC for wasting taxpayer’s money for holding a debate over whether chess was ‘racist’ because white always goes first.

Mr Adams said using chess to discuss structural racism is a bridge too far.

These days it seems like anytime anyone says I’m offended the whole world stops spinning on its axis.

As Stephen Fry said it’s nothing more than a whine, it’s the ultimate look at me, it’s actually quite narcistic.

Instead of whinging or whining why don’t you do something?

I find Andrew Bolt offensive, so I don’t watch him. I find boy bands offensive, so I don’t buy their music and I find Cory Bernardi offensive, so I never voted for him.

There are so many more powerful ways to show that you care about stopping racism/sexism/homophobia etc than changing the names of lollies.

It’s a slippery slope what’s next? Changing the name of Gaytime ice- cream, Chiko rolls or how about black coffee?

Maybe the ABC should take a look at piano keys?

Method

1. Fill a medium sized bowl with the water and sprinkle the yeast on top of it. Whisk the yeast until it’s dissolved. Add 3 cups of the flour and stir with a heavy spatula or wooden spoon until smooth.

2. Add the salt and then the remaining flour. Stir again until well combined. Dust a clean work surface with some flour and dump out the dough. Knead the dough dusting with more flour if things get sticky.

3. Once the dough is a round ball, place the dough back into the bowl. Cover the dough and let rise in a warm area for 2-3 hours or until doubled in size. Once the dough is ready, preheat your oven to 200 degrees or as hot as it can go if not that high. Place a pizza stone or a large upturned baking tray on the top shelf of the oven as it heats up. Dust it with a little of the corneal.

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and punch the air out of it. Cut the dough into 4 pieces.

4. Using your finger tips press each piece of dough into an oval shape. Brush the dough with some olive oil and rub some minced garlic over the surface.

5. Sprinkle with the green onion and transfer to the pizza stone or baking tray and bake in the oven for about 8-10 minutes, longer if you like it more crusty.

Club calls for lights at Loder

THE Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association (ATHC) has put a call out to their supporters and members of the public to fund their campaign to get lights installed at Atherton’s Loder Park.

The lack of lights at Loder Park has not only hindered the hockey clubs playing time, but also their ability to grow as many players retreat to Cairns.

For 10 years the ATHC has been applying for grant after grant and has so far been unsuccessful. They even decided to try and buy a set of lights outright, but the price keeps going up.

The club is now asking members and community for support as they aim to fundraise for the lights themselves through the ‘Play For Purpose’ organisation.

Play For Purpose is an innovative charity donation platform where both the charity and the supporters are rewarded for their donations.

An ATHC spokesperson stated that the lights will not only benefit the members, but the public as well.

“Loder Park is in desperate needs of lights. Many years ago the main oval was lit but the poles and lines have since deteriorated to the point where they are unsafe to use,” they said.

“Lighting such an area does not come cheap and we are currently exploring several options including fixed poles, solar and mobile globe lighting but we are limited by funds and sadly to date, unsuccessful in gaining a grant.”

“Lights would open the opportunity for more play time and more members to join. It would also allow those who cannot play during the day because of job commitments be able to play at night.”

The ATHC has produced many exceptional athletes that have gone on to represent the State, but sadly they have had to leave the nest and start playing in Cairns because of the lack of available infrastructure in Atherton.

The construction of suitable lights at Loder Park will not only allow players to have more flexible playing times but also give them a chance to better experience hockey locally.

STUDENTS at St Stephen’s Catholic College ended Term 2 with a blast of colour and fun with their new ‘Colour Games’.

As sports day was cancelled for the Mareeba College, the staff and teachers decided they still needed to celebrate the student’s end of term and so the ‘Colour Games’ was born.

Bulls back on the pitch

THE Mareeba Bulls are at the gates and ready to play after training commenced four weeks ago.

After their 2020 season was suspended in line with COVID-19 restrictions in March, the Bulls are now looking forward to playing again.

There has been a stagnated return to training with some players slowly trickling back in after the resumption of training with some still wary about the current world wide pandemic.

The majority of the divisions within the Mareeba Bulls returned to full on training on June 9 in preparation for their 2021 season to start in midJuly.

The start of training has seen the bulls focus on more technical skills and fitness as they still have to comply with the current restrictions and social distancing.

Mareeba Bulls President Remo Terranova is excited to be back at training and says the Bulls are raring to go.

“The committee and the

players are all very excited to start playing again and forget about the hard times currently going on,” he said.

“The community support has been really good and we have been able to keep the club above water.

“Hopefully with everything that has happened people will start to realise the importance of community sport and will come out and support their town’s teams.”

The 2021 season has been reduced to a two round season in order to fit the season in do late in the year. There are also talks about a possible champion’s league to give the players more time on the field.

The Mareeba Bulls have even recruited the help of Brett Howard to give their goal keepers a leg up in the coming season and better improve them as players.

Brett Howard, a coach at Professional Goalkeeper Tuition Cairns, was enlisted by the Bulls before COVID-19 really struck down in Australia.

Due to the pandemic Brett was unable to coach the Bulls keepers but now has since been

coaching them and assisting with their development.

“The old days of just standing in the goal and delivering

the ball are gone, now we teach how and why we deliver the ball to certain players and with purpose,” he said.

Local athletes receive sport bursary

“With this kind of a mentality change the goalkeeper becomes so much more and can assist his team in offence.

“Field players can now rely on their goalkeeper and trust in him allowing the field players to play with more freedom.”

TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) has recently recognised Akira Barlow and Brook Hunter as the 2020 recipients of the TRC Sports Bursary.

The TRC Sports Bursary provides financial assistance for Year 11 and 12 athletes that are competing at a state, national or international level.

The successful applicants can use their experiences gained from these high levels of play to support the development of sport in the local community and their sports.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti said that he was honoured to present Akira and Brook their bursaries for their contribution to sport both locally and internationally.

“It was an honour to congratulate Akira Barlow and Brook Hunter on their success and to present them with their bursary,” he said.

“The two $650 bursaries are to assist with the costs of competing and developing their sporting skills.

“Both of these women are role models in our community and I thank them for their con-

tribution to their sport and the region.”

Akira has received international netball recognition for her role in the winning teams for the Constellation Cup in Malaysia and Gold Coast International Carnival in 2019.

Deb Farrell from the Indigenous School Girls Netball Association coaches Akira and commends her for her achievements, values and contribution to the sport through her coaching and constant encouragement of other players.

Brook was involved in the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association Club Regatta where she won three gold medals.

Brook’s coach, Ralph Seed stated that Brook is an excellent role model who has a profound impact on less-disciplined teammates.

Funding provided for turf club improvements THE Atherton Turf Club will see a share of a $90,000 pool of funding money to provide their track with better irrigation and a new and improved course mower.

Funded under the fouryear, $70.4 million Country Racing Support Package, the Atherton Turf Club along with the Einasleigh Race Club, Innisfail Turf Club and the Laura Amateur Turf Club all share in the $90,000 pot to provide infrastructure repairs and

maintenance to their clubs and courses.

The Atherton Turf Club will be using their $35,000 to provide improved track irrigation and the procurement of a new course mower.

The rest of the $90,000 will be split between the other clubs and will go to things like fencing and signage for float parking and traffic management control for the Einasleigh Race Club, converting night boxes to tie-up stalls for Innisfail and

shipping containers for use in future jockey’s room upgrade for Laura.

Non-TAB clubs can apply to Racing Queensland for projects relating to infrastructure repairs and maintenance under the Country Racing Support Package.

A Racing Queensland Spokesperson encourages turf clubs to apply for the funding to better improve the races they provide to their regions.

“Country racing plays an

integral role in many communities across Queensland, these clubs are often the heartbeat of their communities,” he said.

“They provide an important social destination on race days and throughout the week which extends well beyond racing to include health, education and employment benefits.

“The Country Racing Program ensures our non-TAB clubs can access funding for much needed repairs, maintenance and asset replenish-

ment.”

Minister for Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs Stirling Hinchcliffe is excited for successful applicants to receive the funding and provide a boost to the local economies.

“Five projects have been approved under this second round of funding which means jobs and a boost to the economies in these communities,” he said.

“Coming at this time when the global economy is taking

blow after blow as a result of the pandemic, this funding is yet another avenue for Queensland to unite and recover.

“We’re expecting to announce a third round before the end of the year which again means jobs and another decent shot in the arm of economies of successful communities.”
