Pedersen named Trainee of the Year Tablelands Regional Council’s Digital Communications Officer Chantelle Pedersen was recognised recently at the Queensland Training Awards as she was named the Tropical North Queensland’s Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year THE award is presented to an individual who has undertaken a traineeship and has been outstanding in all aspects of their training.

Ms Pedersen began her traineeship in tourism in February of 2018 – of which she completed in February of this year.

Ms Pedersen noted her excitement about coming away with the prestigious award.

“It’s a great honour to be recognised in this fashion, it’s something I didn’t expect and I’m very proud to be acknowledged for the all the hard work I’ve put in since being at the Tablelands Regional Council,” she said.

“I believe there were roughly 800 nominees across all the categories, so it’s an achievement that really means a lot.”

Ms Pedersen said she loves going to work each and every day.

“I’m always doing something different which is what makes my job so enjoyable,” she said.

Ms Pedersen took time to thank those who have played a significant role in her progression since beginning at the TRC, and implored those thinking of studying to do so.

“Firstly I would like to thank my team, supervisors when I was doing my tourism traineeship and my current supervisor, all of them have been crucial in my development,” she said.

“I also want to give a special mention to my TAFE teacher Emma Cooke; she was influential throughout my study and was the person who nominated me for the award.

“Because my course was online, the first time I met her was at the awards ceremony, so that was a lovely opportunity to let her know how important she has been for my career.

“For those who are interested in studying, I encourage you to do so as it enriches your life and opens up so many doors.”

Nullinga Dam facing the axe

THE region’s water security took a major hit last week after the State Government announced that they would be pursuing alternative options for the Nullinga Dam development site after a detailed business case determined its water would cost five or six times more than any prospective users could afford.

Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the State Government will pursue other water supply options to support development and jobs and lock down the dam site as a precautionary measure for the future.

“We’re doing our bit for Far North Queensland,” he said.

“The Morrison Government have said they can fully fund this project and now there’s nothing stopping them.

Dr Lynham said the State Government continued to sup-

port expansion of irrigated agriculture as an essential part of the Queensland economy.

“Sunwater is progressing the $28 million project to modernise the existing open channel irrigation scheme on the Tablelands, including with channel lining, new meters and better electronics,” he said.

“It’s forecast to save more than 8000 mega litres of water alone. That’s more water that farmers can actually afford for more crops.

“Sunwater and the Government will work with local irrigators to identify more affordable water projects like this to ensure industry can expand and create jobs.”

It could prove a huge blow for Far North Queensland, as prominent politicians and leaders hold grave concerns for the region’s continued expansion without a new-found water source.

Despite those trepidations, Dr Lynham said the Palaszczuk Government recognised that there might be strategic benefits for Far North Queensland in preserving the site.

“The Co-ordinator General and the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy are working on the best way to do this now.” he said.

“Southern Cairns, which I represent, needs water badly, if it’s going to expand. It cannot get water from Nullinga,” he said.

“This is a lie perpetrated by a whole stack of people, and it is a lie because we are never going to pull the water from Nullinga, which is on the other side of the Great Dividing Range, into

“What we need to see happen is both the Federal and State Governments come together on this development to come up with $800 million to fund this project.

“And we want that figure of $800 million to be reached with no strings attached.”

Mr Moro said Nullinga Dam is crucial for the expansion and prosperity of the region longterm.

“We saw the economic benefits that were achieved with the Tinaroo Dam,” he said.

“The Nullinga Dam can provide similar benefits over a long period of time if the State and Federal Governments are realistic and patient when implementing the project.

“Industry on the Tablelands is worth over $500 million and this dam has a chance to further add to that.”

Mr Katter went on to explain the more reasonable solution of the North Johnstone Transfer.

“The bigger picture was always the North Johnstone Transfer,” he said.

By raising the Tinaroo dam, in conjunction with the North Johnstone Transfer, Mr Katter believes that Innisfail will be provided with some protection against future flooding events and provide farmers with an emergency supply.

“We want some long-term development of the water for Cairns and I don’t think there’s any alternative but to look at Flaggy Creek and to look at Rifle Creek,” he said.

Chair of the Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Council Joe Moro said he is not surprised by the State Government’s announcement.

Council and QLD Museums deliver greater learning QUEENSLAND Museum Network and Mareeba Shire Council have formed a partnership to deliver some amazing learning resources to primary school students across the Shire.

Mareeba Shire Council have partnered with Queensland Museums to become one of three Regional Loans Museum Depot’s in Far North Queensland who can deliver access to free curriculumbased learning museum kits, specimens and artefacts for primary schools to use to engage their students in learning.

Dairy industry reaching desperation stakes

JULY 2020 will mark 20 years since the deregulation of the dairy industry, and all there is to show for it is a severe decrease in operational farms and profits right across the country.

While dairy farmers were rejoicing earlier this year after major supermarket chains Coles, Woolworths and ALDI increased their home brand milk prices by 10 cents a litre, the majority of dairy farmers still hold grave concerns that the industry is becoming less and less viable.

The Atherton Tablelands is no exception, with farmers in the region not receiving enough financial gain per litre of milk to cover the cost of production, minimum wage increase and the state’s drought-related uptick in grain price.

One such farmer who is firmly feeling the effects of the declining industry is third generation Jaggan dairy farmer Malcolm McGregor, who is calling for structural change to ensure dairy farming doesn’t become unviable.

“The dairy farming industry is in a state of desperation,” he said.

“It has reached a point where the milk is being brought in from cheaper areas, and all that has done is keep the price flat.

“In addition, only enough milk was produced on the Tablelands to supply Ingham north – everything from Townsville and south had to be imported which is frightening.”

Mr McGregor said a price rise of 15-20 cents per litre of milk is what is required to ensure the dairy farming industry can remain sustainable and produce a profit.

“The major supermarkets increasing their home brand milk by 10 cents per litre was great;

however the farmers saw less than three cents of that markup,” he said.

“With the cost of production, wages and feed bills rapidly going up, it is just becoming too hard.

“For myself, the cost of production is 62 cents per litre and I am only receiving 59 cents per litre in return.”

Mr McGregor said he hopes to see Parliament take a more proactive approach towards improving the earning capacity for farmers across the country.

“Not enough is being done,”

he said.

“Those in government are using a wait and see configuration, and if they continue down that path it will be too late.

“We’re losing too many farms which will in turn mean dairy farming is no longer sustainable.”

Mr McGregor said despite the wonderful work from organisations who are lobbying on farmers’ behalf, he said he can’t see the industry securing the desired 15-20 cent per litre milk price increase anytime soon.

Yarns helping change perceptions

A photoblog telling the stories of Yarrabah community members has taken social media by storm, and its success has ensured its expansion into other Indigenous communities throughout Far North Queensland.

‘YARRIE YARNS’ was implemented in 2017, with its initial aim to counteract the negative use of social media.

The objective has changed since however, as the stories told from Indigenous elders, leaders, educators, role models, influenc-

ers and achievers has struck a real chord with readers – allowing Yarrie Yarns to now also be a source of inspiration for Indigenous empowerment.

Their yarns also go a long way to strengthen Indigenous and non-Indigenous relation-

ships, closing the gap, providing reconciliation and aiding crime prevention among many other things.

Yarrie Yarns Project Manager Senior Constable Andrew Frew said his inspiration to start the project was one borne for two

reasons.

“I am a Police Officer in the Queensland Police Service, and at the time working in Yarrabah we were getting a lot of complaints about threats and harassment on social media,” he said.

“Also, at the time there were

a lot of negative media stories being reported about Yarrabah and other Indigenous communities - hardly any of the positive stories were being told.

“From working in Indigenous Communities for over 10 years I knew and observed the positive stories and I wanted to showcase them. “I based the project on the ‘Humans of New York’ concept where everyone has a story.”

Mr Frew alluded to social media acting as a powerful tool to bring people of all backgrounds closer together.

“I share the yarns on the social media sites of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for their communities to see and gain a real sense of pride,” he said.

“One of the positives of social media is that a wider audience is captured which in turn educates them as well.

“At the end of each year the participants and their communities receive photobooks containing some of the yarns and their photos.”

Mr Frew said he believes the reason behind the Yarrie Yarns project’s success is due to it being a positive experience for both the storyteller and reader.

“The project is showing all the positives of culture, life and communities and everyone is really getting on board with that,” he said.

That positive feedback has allowed Mr Frew to implement the project in other Indigenous communities in Cooktown and

Cape York.

“I have no shortage of yarns and am very confident that other communities will be just as welcoming,” he said.

“Every day there are more people following our social media sites as well as leaving great comments and messages about the participants, stories and the project. “The long term goal is to obtain yarns Queensland-wide.”

Mr Frew took time to thank those who have contributed significantly to the Yarrie Yarns project’s success since its inception two years ago.

“Firstly, I would like to thank all the participants for sharing their yarns, without them the project would not be possible,” he said.

“A photobook is produced after each year and given to the participant as a way to thank them for their involvement.

“Secondly, I would like to thank the readers, supporters and followers of the project.

“And lastly, I would like to thank Inspector Newton and the Queensland Police Service for the time and support allowing me to deliver the Yarrie Yarns Project.”

Bull and bronc action returns to Mt Carbine ONE of regional Queensland’s most sought-after events on the calendar is back bigger and better in 2019 as the Mt Carbine Bull and Bronc Ride takes place this Saturday.

School grants available

FAR North Queensland schools are invited to apply for Federal Government grants worth up to $20,000.

North Queensland-based Senator Susan McDonald said money was available for schools to fund projects that benefit students and the wider school community.

She said up to $200,000 was available through the Morrison Government’s $30.2 million Local Schools Community Fund.

“All schools in the North and Far North will be eligible to apply for funding ranging in value from $1000 to $20,000 to go towards a school project,” said Ms McDonald.

“School leaders know what is best for their schools, and the Local Schools Community Fund allows them to pursue a project that will make the big-

gest difference to their students’ education. Funding for smallscale extensions or classroom refurbishments, new computer facilities, mental health and counselling services, playground equipment, library resources, or sports facilities are all covered through this fund.”

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said projects would be assessed on the benefit they would bring to the school community.

“The Morrison Government is providing record funding for Australian schools,” he said.

“We will increase funding for all primary and secondary schools across all sectors by an average of 62 per cent per student.

Schools can lodge one application for each of their campuses and use SchoolsHUB – schools. education.gov.au/ to apply. Applications close September 30.

MAREEBA resident Peter Griffiths is urging men to have a check-up to ensure they aren’t suffering from bowel cancer.

Bowel cancer claims the lives of 100 Australians every week, with those aged above 50 at a higher risk of developing the disease.

While successful treatment is listed at 90 per cent when detected early, bowel cancer’s danger lies in its subtlety, with a number of patients not experiencing symptoms prior to diagnosis.

Mr Griffiths’ case was a little different, as he had been experiencing stomach pains over a 12 month period.

Mr Griffiths (66) said after completing a testing kit courtesy of the Government along with two General Practitioner appointments, all three tests came back negative.

“It wasn’t until I had a colo-

noscopy that the doctors found I had a 65 millimetre tumour,” he said.

“I was diagnosed with Stage 2 bowel cancer roughly a month ago and was operated on last week.

“I was fortunate to have dodged a bullet but there are many men out there who don’t.”

Whilst in hospital, Mr Griffiths noted the amount of men who he met who didn’t have any symptoms.

“I know there is a lot of blokes in particular out there who don’t like to go to the doctors, but I urge you to do so because bowel cancer takes too many lives too early.

“Bowel cancer prevention is something I am very passionate about given my personal experience, so I want to do my best to get the word out there so men can have their lives saved from this terrible disease.”

YEAR 10 Students from across the Tablelands were given an early chance to experience the work of a tradie through the “Try’a Trade Day” hosted at Mareeba State High School last Wednesday.

The day, funded by Construction Schools Queensland (CSQ) in conjunction with WorldSkills Australia, allowed students to experience four different trades in hands on, practical sessions.

CSQ Industry Engagement Manager Robyn Van Rooye said that this experience is crucial to student development.

“It gives students an understanding of what trades are available,” she said.

“Because there are so many vocations within the industry, it’s like a checklist; try one out, check it off and move on.

“We’ve had amazing feedback for our second year on the Tablelands.”

46 high school students from Mareeba, Atherton, Malanda, Ravenshoe and Herberton all attended the day. Students from the Torres Strait have also attended the “Try’a Trade Day” with CSQ moving to Thursday Island earlier in the year for the program.

“The students come in and they are taught by tradies, they get to see what it’s like to be a tradie,” she said.

“I’ve had students come up to me and say what a great time they’ve had.”

This opinion was shared by all the teachers who attended the “Try’a Trade Day” and are all looking to push next year to encourage more Year 10 students to come and “Try’a Trade”.

Homelessness is a growing national crisis

THERE is no positive spin on the issue of homelessness.

Officially 21,715 Queenslanders are considered homeless. But that is just those who were able to be counted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Census night in 2016.

The real figure is likely

much higher.

Many more are the hidden homeless, they are couch surfing with friends and family until they outlive their welcome, or they are sleeping in cars or in parks away from judging eyes.

The fact that in this day and age there are still people having to shiver through each winter without shelter, is frankly, a shameful indictment on society and how we treat those who have fallen through its cracks.

National Homelessness Week August 4-10 is a chance to take stock of just how bad the problem has become, but also an opportunity to forge a new path forward, a path of empathy and compassion, a path of housing and hope.

It needs all levels of government, corporates, not-forprofits, philanthropists, and visionaries coming together to clean it up. This week should serve as a wake-up call to all of us.

Vinnies are committed to saving as many families as possible from the perils of life on the street, housing more than 1200 people in the last year, but the problem is too big for us and other not-forprofits to confront alone.

The fact is there are a myriad of factors that only a coordinated approach will

solve. There is an extreme lack of social and affordable housing, rising costs of living, unsecure and unstable work, growing underemployment, a sluggish economy and a social safety net in Newstart which hasn’t seen a rise in 27 years and remains woefully inadequate.

The results of which mean thousands of Queenslanders don’t have a home, including 3,372 children under 12. As a father I find that figure incredibly hard to stomach, and inexcusable.

Homelessness is a growing emergency we must address now, or see it spiral out of our control, evidenced by the fact that 190,000 Queensland households are in rental stress, putting them just two pay days or significant life events away from life on the street.

We are doing what we can, but we need help, and I challenge everyone in government, the private sector and the wider community to take five minutes and consider if that homeless person you walked past was your mother or father, your son or daughter, would you help them?

Local girl Jolene Ross taking the country music scene by storm

LOCAL singer and songwriter Jolene Ross (pictured) recently graduated from the CMAA (Country Music Association Australia) Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth and

was taught by some of the industry’s best. Jolene was lucky enough to win the scholarship in 2018 from the Walkamin Country Music Club after participating in the Far North Queensland

talent quest.

Jolene said she had an absolute ball learning about the music industry, creating friendships, contacts and the skills needed to progress further into

the bigger scene.

Jolene was also lucky enough to be mentored by esteemed award-winning artist Fanny Lumsden.

“Fanny was so enjoyable to work with, she felt like a big sister not the Golden Guitar winner that she is,” Jolene said.

Jolene also got the opportunity to co-write a song with Golden Guitar winner Allan Caswell, the artist who wrote the theme song ‘On The Inside’ for the television show Prisoner.

Jolene and her family said they would like to thank all the people who have supported her by buying raffle tickets from her proud Grandparents, throwing a few coins her way whilst busking or even just giving a few words of encouragement.

“Every little bit has helped me on this big adventure and I am very thankful,” she said.

Jolene said she hopes to return back to the Academy in the future to focus on the instrumental side and increase her knowledge this way also.

Jolene and her sister Justene were a support act for Fanny Lumsden in Dimbulah on Saturday as part of the seventh annual Country Halls Tour.

Students set to shine on stage MAREEBA State High Schools brightest stars will be centre stage this Friday and Saturday night for the schools biennial Variety Show – Razzle Dazzle.

Taking hints from glamorous flicks like The Great Gatsby, Razzle Dazzle is sure to be an entertainment overload with performances encompassing all parts of the creative arts.

MSHS teacher and director of this year’s Variety Show Miss Danielle Riding is imploring locals to come along and see the best and brightest performers shine on stage.

“It’s a lot of hard work but it’s very much worth it, it all comes together,” she said.

“The preparations are coming along smoothly; the trickiest thing is getting students who are available.

“A lot of students are doing things like sport and other community events so it’s just filtering out who we are able to get on stage.”

The show will feature dancing, singing and all manner of fun for people of all ages.

This year’s performance will also include acts from the surrounding state schools with Mareeba State, Biboorah State and Dimbulah state schools all preforming on the night.

Miss Riding believes that there is something for everyone to enjoy at this year’s Variety Show.

“Because it’s a Variety Show there is something for everybody, you’ll laugh and be dazzled by the performances,” she said.

Key Duties Include, but not limited to: • Ensure the obligations of Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation’s Grant Deed for the Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program: Consultation and planning, weeds, fire and feral animal and biodiversity and cultural heritage management, education, training and development are met.

Mareeba High reclaims lost glories

AFTER a decade long hiatus the Mareeba State High School has reclaimed its position as the reigning touch football champions at the recent All Schools Touch Football Championships.

Mareeba State High School entered an Open mixed team into the championship under the tutelage of co-coaches and Mareeba State High School teachers Bryan Alford and Clinton Cifuentes.

Under their guidance and the guidance of captain Shaun Stephens, the MSHS team steamrolled their competition to come away with the win.

Putting up an impressive total of 45 tries with only a measly eight scored against them throughout the tournament MSHS went on to reclaim their position at the top of the podium from last year’s winners Atherton State High School.

The competition was fierce and competitive according to both coaches.

“The team stuck to the structure that they trained, from their warm ups right through to their warm downs,” Mr Cifuentes said.

“Everything they did up here, they transferred down to Townsville.

“From game one they just kept improving and getting better, they never took a step backwards.”

Mr Alford echoed his comments.

“We trained hard, and we trained some very specific defensive and offensive structures,” he said.

“And for us as coaches it was just us saying, stay true to their training.

“Have belief in what they trained for.”

Although the team was scraped together at the last minute by captain Shaun Stephens, the team played cohesive, aggressive and high level touch football.

“We had teams trying to target our link and wing; the smallest girls on the field and they just shut them down every time,” Mr Cifuentes said.

“You can’t break a chain by targeting the weak link if there is no weak link.

“The last three games, the team’s technique in defence was flawless.”

Mr Alford believed in the importance of a proper ‘mixed’ team.

“In order to be successful in a mixed comp, you’ve got to have a solid set of girls.” he said.

“No matter how good your boys are you really can’t cover three weak girls.

“But our girls stood up and played really impressive football.”

The main core of the team was comprised of Jaylen Boyle, Jeremy Bupa and Captain Shaun

CHAMPIONS: The Mareeba State High School Open mixed team won the All Schools Touch Football championships.

Stephens who acted as the moral flag for the team.

Mr Cifuentes commented on Shaun’s commitment and eagerness to push for the team.

“Shauny come saw me about two months before the tournament,” he said.

“I said that if you can come to me with a team, I’ll put the nomination in.

“We started off with an open boy’s team and a full open mixed team, but due to commitment issues both teams collapsed into an open mixed team.”

Mr Cifuentes recalls the last time MSHS entered a team in the Touch Championships, in the mid 90s stating that they were the reigning champs before interest died off.

But thanks to the willingness and commitment of the MSHS

team, spearheaded by Shaun Stephens, the school has now reclaimed that honour.

With Atherton State High School winning the championship last year, Mr Alford is impressed with the local touch competition.

“It’s a real tip of the hat to the local touch comp,” Mr Alford said “This region (Tablelands) sent down three of the competing teams; Mareeba, Atherton and Malanda.

“The clubs need to recognise that they have these talented juniors coming through.”

Mr Alford, who is thoroughly involved in the touch football scene outside of school, spoke glowingly about the teams performances, stating that they “constantly improved.”

“Next year were going to start planning earlier, train earlier and even participate in the FNQ warm up competition.”

Unfortunately nominations are now closed for the next stage of competition in Brisbane, but this won’t stop coaches Mr Alford and Mr Cifuentes from pushing their students.

“Our next focus will be the interschool touch competition,” Mr Alford said.

“We’ve always played and performed well and this year we will have roughly the same team as the open side.

“So this will be the next stage for the students and us as coaches.”

“I was worried about burning the students out to early in the carnival format,” he said.

“So at about five minutes until end of play, we would run the ball in the corner, kill it, and just play deadlock defence.

“Using this strategy we didn’t have a try scored against us in the last 10 minutes of any game.

“We put our foot on their throat and didn’t let up so to speak.”

Both Mr Alford and Mr Cifuentes are extremely proud of the students, and spoke of them creating a ‘legacy’.

“It was great to see that word getting thrown around,” Mr Alford said.

“Now we’ve got to push the next generation coming through to look at the legacy left behind,

THE Atherton Tableland Hockey played another round of walking hockey on Saturday July 27. The game featured a mix of both older and younger players with ages ranging from 5 to 85.

Walking hockey is a modified version of hockey, with modified rules to better help accessibility to the sport and to accommodate all ages and skill levels.

No experience is required in order to play and equipment is available to borrow on the day.

For those interested games are played on Saturdays at 5pm at Loder Park in Atherton. The fees are competitive and can be paid weekly.

Gladiators true to their name THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side achieved arguably their most impressive win of the season as they overcame a 16 point deficit to win 24-16 against Ivanhoes at the Smithfield Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

After a spate of errors from both sides in the opening 15 minutes, Ivanhoes were first to cross the stripe after their backrower mopped up a clever grubber to score in the 18th minute.

It was an extremely tight first half, as both teams showed resolve defensively on their own line; with Ivanhoes taking a 4-0 lead into the main break.

The beginning of the second half was a far more onesided however, as the home side scored two tries inside the opening 10 minutes to set up a troubling 16-0 scoreline for Mareeba.

Despite the uphill battle, the Gladiators refused to throw in the towel, scoring four consecutive tries in the final 28 minutes to secure the win.

With seven of the Gladiators being ex-Ivanhoes players, there was an extra bit of feeling throughout the game that saw for a great atmosphere.

laugh against his old team after his charge-down led to a try for halfback Joshua Ward that got them back into the game.

Ward returned the favour less than 30 minutes later as he put Welsh through a hole to score with just ten minutes to go.

Gladiators centre Mitchell Brim ensured the win with a try with just three minutes remaining.

Welsh said there was plenty of emotion playing against his old club.

“There’s a lot of heart still with Ivanhoes having played with the club for five years, so I had such a great time playing against old mates of mine,” he said.

“Even though I was on the

end of a couple of good shots, I made sure I kept getting up and having a dig, this was a game us ex-hoes boys wanted to win and I thought we showed a lot of resolve as a side.”

Welsh said his strong performance was off the back of frontrowers Kurt Jackson and Ian King, who laid a platform that allowed him to succeed.

“The boys up front just kept on going forward,” he said.

“Off the back of that Wardy (Joshua Ward) was able to get on the front foot which made my job so much easier.

“This was a really good win and one we can be proud of as a team.”

Gladiators captain-coach Trent Barnard was ecstatic to

come away with the win.

“I am extremely proud of the boys for their game today, they showed a lot of heart to come back from 16 points down,” he said.

“We’ve showed great effort right throughout the year; it’s just been our execution and consistency that has let us down, so I knew if we stayed within reach we’d be able to get back into the game.

“Obviously it’s good to get a win against our old club, there was a good crowd on hand and they provided a great atmosphere, so this was one of the best wins for our side this year.

“Hopefully we can build on it and finish strong for the season and build towards next year.”

Bulls draw with Comets at home THE Mareeba Bulls Premiers Men’s side secured a draw at home as their fixture with the Southside Comets finished 1-1 at Lindsay Australia Stadium on Saturday night.

It was an important match for the Mareeba Bulls, as they looked to solidify their spot in the top four after a less than stellar start to the 2019 season.

The start of Saturday’s match didn’t go as planned, after the Southside Comets outfit struck first through a penalty goal to Casey Agnew.

The Comets were able to hold on and take that lead into the main break.

The Bulls’ chances of engineering a comeback were hurt after star recruit Bronson Koppen receieved a red card.

That didn’t deter Mareeba however; as they scored an early penalty in the second half to deadlock it at 1-1 and come away with a draw.

Mareeba Bulls coach Perry Krakowczyk said he couldn’t fault his side’s effort.

“Everyone gave 100% from start to finish,” he said.

“We were dominant the whole game, even when we only had 10 men on the field.

“It was just our execution that was lacking, we were so dominant in every area yet we were unable to capitalise on our opportunities which was disappointing.

“It was a game we expected to win and we can’t afford to let opportunities slip against a really strong side like Edge Hill this weekend.”

Krakowczyk said despite losing in their two previous fixtures earlier in the season, he noted that he is very confident that his side can come away with the win this time around.

“We’re starting to gel a lot more as a side as we get deeper into the season, so this test against Edge Hill will be great to see where we’re at,” he said.

“In our two losses against them this year, it wasn’t because they played so much better than us, it was because we couldn’t execute in the crucial moments, so we’ll be looking to rectify that this weekend.”

THREE tries to winger Pio Seci in the opening twenty minutes gave the Atherton Roosters a perfect start on their way to victory over the Edmonton Storm in Sunday’s Cairns District Rugby League match at Petersen Park.

The Roosters ran in five tries in their 34-16 win and led 24-6 at the break. The Roosters were again missing several of their regular first grade stars as the club battles a hefty injury toll.

A top five finish and a spot in the finals is now secured following Sunday’s win by the Roosters.

Coach Graham Clark said he expected a tough contest on Sunday and was happy with the result.

“With our present injury worries we had to pull several players up from our lower grades and it was a great effort,” Clark said.

“Storm are a better team than what their position on the points table tells so we really had to dig deep.”

Roosters forwards Luke La Rosa and James Clark and centre Willem Foster are all out for the season with injuries.

“There is a few other players expected back from injury over the next couple of weeks which will be in time for the finals,” Clark said.

In Sunday’s reserve grade match, the Roosters won over Edmonton 22-18 after being behind for most of the game. Edmonton defeated the Roosters 40-12 in the under 18 game.

The Senior Roosters host their final 2019 home game against Innisfail at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium this Saturday.
