Life-changing trek to Everest THE resilience one has to show to remain strong whilst a love one suffers from a debilitating disease like Dementia is something to be admired. One such pair of sisters who have had to endure the heartbreak of a family member succumbing to the disease is Bronwyn Price and Tracy Townsend. When The Express spoke with Ms Price and Ms Townsend earlier this year, they were training in preparation for a gruelling hike to the Base Camp of Mount Everest to raise money for Dementia Australia – a fundraising effort inspired by their mother’s five year fight with Alzheimer’s. They have since returned from their trek having raised $10,000, which exceeds their pre-fundraising expectations of $5,000. Added to that, the group of 15 from across Australia participating in the walk raised a total of $70,000 which will go towards Dementia cure research. Ms Price said their 15 day hike was an incredible experience that she won’t forget. “It was such an emotional and rewarding journey because of what we were walking for,” she said. “And to be able to experience it with my sister makes it all the more special, we were very close before the trip but we’ve become even closer since the hike.” Ms Price and Ms Townsend took part in an extensive training regime in preparation for the hike, of which included 4-6 gym sessions a week, three sessions a week at the Cairns Altitude Training Centre and more than five hours of walking every Saturday and Sunday in the three months leading up to leaving for Nepal. “It was certainly a challenging experience both mentally and

physically, however I feel our efforts in training really helped us get through it,” Ms Price said. “I think we did so well physically due to the enormous help of Scott Payne from the Cairns Altitude Training Centre and Cameron Lewis from Furious 40 Mareeba.” Ms Price noted a highlight of the trip that brought everyone participating in the walk to tears. “Our Nepali Sherpa Guides had made us a prayer flag for when we arrived at base camp, which reinforced to us that we weren’t just doing it for ourselves, but for everyone who has been touched by Dementia,” she

said. Ms Townsend echoed her sister’s sentiments, describing the experience as the most amazing thing she has ever done, and noted that they both plan on doing something similar in the future. “There are no words to describe how special it was doing this trip together as sisters for our mum,” Ms Townsend said. “We are so proud of what we have achieved and grateful for the support and good wishes we have received from everyone. “This is definitely something we would like to do again. “We could do Everest again or possibly a different trek that De-

TRC Councillor vacancy to be filled by appointment In last week’s edition of The Express, in the story titled ‘Cr Ball announces resignation’, it was stated that “Mr Ball’s resignation means the Tablelands Regional Council will be required to hold a by-election to determine who takes on his position

as Division 3 Councillor”, which is incorrect. Instead, as a result of Cr Ball’s resignation, The Queensland Electoral Commission will be notified, and the vacancy filled in accordance with the requirements of the Local Government Act.

Disappointment as Cook MP moves office out of electorate

WITH news surfacing last week of Member for Cook Cynthia Lui moving the Cook electoral office from Mareeba to Cairns in the near future, the announcement was one that was met with considerable anger from residents. Ms Lui’s announcement means that her electoral office will be located in a city that is not in the Cook electorate, thus raising pertinent questions as to her accessibility for community members moving forward. Chair of the Liberal National Party’s Mareeba branch Karen Pedersen said Ms Lui’s announcement to move the location of her electoral office is very disappointing. “While remote communities fly to Cairns, the majority of the Cook electorate would use Mareeba as a service centre,” she said. “Now with the office shifting to Cairns, this will add another two hours to their travelling trip.” Ms Lui’s decision was not only met with ridicule from those involved with the opposition party, as some long-serving Labor members from Mareeba also voiced their displeasure. ALP Queensland Branch Life Member Denis McKinley said he was in disbelief when he heard the news of Ms Lui’s move. “You cannot convince me that she will be more accessible to the people of her electorate when she

moves to Cairns,” he said. “There’s more than 10,000 people in Mareeba and more than 20,000 in the Mareeba Shire, and residents are not going to travel 100km on the off chance they might be able to see her in her office. “This is a decision made for purposes of personal convenience.” Mr McKinley noted his disappointment about Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore expressing his understanding of the move. “I can’t believe the Mayor is okay with this move,” he said. “He represents the public and should be in tune with what the community wants, and her moving from Mareeba definitely isn’t what we asked for when we elected her.” Mr McKinley said with the enormous growth and development Mareeba is experiencing, now is not the time for Ms Lui to be running away. “There are huge development opportunities in relation to roads, infrastructure, water and a host of other things, and it is a poor image for the town if we don’t have a local member readily accessible in the electorate she represents,” he said. “If anything it is time to be more involved – we need a member who is proactive in the community and this decision signifies

the complete opposite. “If we don’t have a member working in unison with the local government to promote extensive development in the region, we’ll become stagnant.” Mr McKinley noted just some of the disadvantages to come out of Ms Lui’s move to Cairns. “There are plenty of not-forprofit organisations and elderly people who benefit greatly from having Cynthia in town here, so for her to leave will put them in a very precarious position whenever they want to raise an issue within the community,” he said. “Many of them aren’t phone or computer-literate and this will prove a major hurdle for them moving forward, meaning it will silence a very important voice in our electorate.” Mr McKinley said Queensland’s Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Deputy Premier Jackie Trad need to step up and reverse Ms Lui’s decision immediately. “Cynthia needs to be here in her electorate,” he said. “This is a sad indictment of the Labor Party that I’ve always known, and it is flat out wrong.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said while he is disappointed with the move, he understands it. “A lot of people don’t understand the complexity of Cynthia’s

Mareeba local and Queensland Labor life member Denis McKinley is extremely disappointed with Cynthia Lui’s announcement to move her electorate office from Mareeba to Cairns.

job as Member for Cook, it is an extremely vast electorate, much of which is isolated,” he said. “So it makes sense from an efficiency standpoint as Cairns is the main transport hub of FNQ.” Cr Gilmore said he also understands where the community is coming from at the same time. “The electorate office is a

symbolic gesture for the people of Cook, so I can see why many members of the public would be upset,” he said. “However, she simply can’t be close to everybody considering the size of this electorate. “She was faced with a really tough decision and I applaud her for having the courage to make

it.”

Cr Gilmore said his real disappointment lies in the comments that are being made from certain members of the public. “There are some comments coming from people who don’t completely understand the situation, and frankly they are unhelpful,” he said.

Students farewell primary school years MAREEBA State School’s Year six students bid farewell to primary school last Friday as the final bell rang on their junior education. To celebrate the graduating class of 2018, Mareeba State School held a graduation ceremony in the school’s hall last Thursday. Outgoing students received graduation certificates to signify the successful completion of their primary school education. MSS Deputy Principal Michael Nielsen noted how great it was to see 2018’s Year six cohort graduate. “I have been working with this group of students since they

were in Year four,” he said. “They are a fantastic group of kids who listen, learn and bring enthusiasm into every school day.” Mr Nielsen said he is confident this year’s graduating class will be well prepared for their high school careers. “They are a cohort that is flexible and who can adjust to change very easily, and I feel as teachers we learn just as much off them as they do off us,” he said. 2018 School Captains Ella Daven and Jai Torrisi spoke glowingly about their time at Mareeba State School. “I love Mareeba State School, it’s such a friendly environment

that has been very beneficial for me, and having been here for seven years, it has become like my second home,” Ella said. “I couldn’t have made it this far without all of the teachers and my family guiding me along the way.” Jai echoed Ella’s comments when describing his time at the school. “Mareeba State School was such a great school to be a part of,” he said. “I would like to thank Mr Nielsen and my family for all of their support, and would encourage other students to come to Mareeba State School in the future.”

Bright future for top OP students

OP 1: St Stephen’s Catholic College students Elena Pilat and Ellena Spena together with Mareeba State High School’s Joshua Theakston all received an OP 1.

QUEENSLAND’S Year 12 students waited anxiously on Friday night as the OP results were released for yet another year. Students were made aware of their OP scores after they were made accessible online at 12am Saturday morning. Mareeba State School was one such school who had a strong contingent of high performers, with 20% of their OP eligible students finishing within the 1-5 OP range. MSHS School Captain Joshua Theakston was the sole student to finish with an OP 1, while

Richard Thompson and Daniel Strazzeri achieved OP 2’s, Filippa Calabro finished with an OP 4 and Ashleigh Hollins, Brooke Mahmut, Dayna Sclippa, Alice Sibthorpe all recorded OP 5’s. MSHS Principal Scott Whybird extended his congratulations to all OP recipients. “We recognise that this is both a nervous and exciting time for all former students who have received their OP’s,” he said. “We are proud of each of you for your achievements in 2018.” St Stephen’s Catholic College’s Year 12 cohort also

achieved impressive OP results for 2018, with 29% of their OP eligible students gaining an OP 5 or better. Ellena Spena and Elena Pilat were the school’s highest achievers as they both recorded an OP 1. St Stephen’s Catholic College Principal Ida Pinese said she would like to congratulate all students on their great effort. “A special thank you to all teaching staff and parents for the support and guidance which was provided to assist these students to achieve their goals,” she said.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce executive committee at the AGM and launch of the Annual Economic Publication last Monday: Natasha Srhoj, Joe Moro, Jillian Trout, Sally Teitzel, Sam Musumeci and front; Sherri Soncin (Executive Officer), Maria Nastasi and Eva Arena.

THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce released their annual publication last Monday as committee members gathered at The Gateway Hotel. The publication provides readers with an economic snapshot for the 2018/19 financial year, and aims to highlight the wonderful attractions Mareeba boasts – along with the untapped potential the region has from an economic and tourism standpoint. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said the publication is about emphasising the important assets Mareeba has. “With the lakes on the front cover and Emerald Creek Falls on the back cover, I think it’s crucial we reinforce that Mareeba isn’t a sleepy town you simply

drive past,” he said. “There are a number of wonderful things on offer here, and if we can encourage tourists to see Mareeba as a place to stop at and enjoy, they will begin to realise the attractions within the proximity of Mareeba and be enticed to come back.” Mr Moro noted that one the most significant projects the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce are eager to pursue is the idea of visitors spending more time in the CBD. “There’s a lot of confidence within the business community and a number of them are looking forward to next year,” he said. “Obviously there are always going to be businesses that struggle which is never good to see, however overall, Mareeba trade

has been really positive in recent times. “A number of business sectors have experienced significant growth, and with Mareeba now being the biggest town in the Far North, we are looking to continue to build on that.” Mr Moro said increasing the interest in local trade will have a flow on effect and improve the town’s tourism industry as a whole. “Along with encouraging visitors to spend more time in the CBD, we want to develop an itinerary for potential tourists,” he said. “With the wineries, ice creameries, abundance of natural attractions and the proposed Mt Emerald Wind Farm, KURWorld and Mareeba Airport Upgrade developments in the re-

gion’s pipeline, the perfect time for growth is now. “We want people staying in Mareeba for extended periods of time.” The release of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s publication coincided with their Annual General Meeting, where the financial and strategic order of business was discussed and the appointment of committee members were announced. The committee remained largely unchanged with Joe Moro staying on as President, Sam Musemeci (Vice President), Maria Nastasi (Treasurer) and Natasha Srhoj (Secretary) along with committee members Eva Arena, Jillian Trout and Sally Teitzel.

Electorate office precedence already set Typical of the current rash of ALP representatives who have their only focus on the next election that the Mareeba electorate office was not set up by Campbell Newman and his government. Because of its size and relevance to Cook, Leichhardt and Kennedy, Mareeba has been chosen as the base for electorate offices before Ms Lui.

Namely: Billy Gordon (ALP Cook), David Kempton (LNP Cook), Jason O'Brien (ALP Cook) since Mareeba was relegated to Cook. Before that, Mareeba was also the electorate office for the seat of Tablelands, namely (Rosa Leelong (One Nation); Shaun Nelson (One Nation) Tom Gilmore member and Minister (LNP), Martin Tenni member and Minister (NP) as well as Federal elected Senator Len Harris (One Nation), Rob Hulls (ALP), Bob Katter Senior (CP)

Perhaps modern day politicians like Ms Lui and her ALP cohorts are either ignorant of the actual historical facts of true and meaningful service and representation to locals on the part of previous officials or they more focussed on suiting their own needs above others and the often held political mantra that if you tell a lie often enough someone else will one day believe it to be true. Health and wellbeing not on our agenda I am frankly fed up with hearing how our so called Health Services are doing such a good job. It’s nothing to do with health; it’s everything to do with illness in our population and should be called The Department of Unwellness. The truth is most folks do not take any interest in their overall health and wellbeing. The vast majority of people eat junk food but expect to keep well and when they are sick they simply run to the doctor for a quick fix, which the Doctor eagerly gives but without a word about why that person is sick, no advice about good diet, why, because these stupid people are the Cash Cows of the medical services. This fact is why our State and National cost for so called health has blown out to some extraordinary figure and is a crippling blight on our nation. No matter how much they put the ad on TV telling people to eat more fresh fruit and veg in their diet, it seems their ears are blocked with the grease from all the rubbishy deep fried so called food they consume. Quite frankly I am fed up with seeing our hard earned taxes going more and more into more hospitals and health services; we have more hospitals per head of population now than

ever before because our population just doesn’t care about their own basic health. Being well is so easy, so good and anyone can do it... change your eating habits; even eat organic like we try to do. It’s wonderful to be really well and happy your life is so good and you don’t spend your life sitting in doctor’s surgeries or spending money in the chemist and feeling sorry for yourself. I recommend it, I am sold, and it is fantastic. Grahame West Ravenshoe

1990’s hotter on the Tablelands The highest maximum temperature in the recent heat wave for Walkamin was 38.3 on the 2511-18. However the record for November is 39.8 on the 19-1190. Also 39.8 was recorded officially at this site in the Walkamin DPI screen on the 6-1-94. I remember that day well when I recorded 40.3 in the shade at Beatrice Street in Atherton. I have been recording temperatures in Stevenson screens for many years at Tolga but did not do it in screens the 90’s. I am also seeking to find more people interested in recording the weather and I can loan them screens and weather instruments for as long as they need them. When I told him I was not impressed he mumbled incoherently and put a lead around his dog and then tied it up outside IGA. I pay my dog registration. I pay to attend dog obedience in Atherton. We have to pay for the medication and staples from the last dog attack. My dog was leashed and this irresponsible person appeared not to give a stuff. We didn’t need another vet bill. He didn’t look like he could have paid either. Do reponsible pet owners have to go armed with a deterrent? Note that I don’t blame the dog. I blame this irresponsible pet owner. and isolated people in the Mareeba Shire are able to experience the joy of Christmas. It's one of those appeals that really gets down to the heart of it, looks after people and their families at Christmas time. I am very appreciative, and I am certain those who we set out to assist at this time of year will also be thankful. So thank you to everyone who has given to the Appeal. The end of a year is a great time to reflect on the past and look forward and make plans for the future. I take this op-

portunity to also thank my fellow Councillors for their support and direction in striving to achieve our strategic priorities and vision for the Shire. Once again, I wish you all a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year! I hope you will have the opportunity to join with family and friends over the festive season. Whether you are travelling near or far, please stay safe. Mayor Tom Gilmore Mareeba Shire Council

It has been a busy 12 months and I am proud of the way we stood together as a Council and community. I realise it hasn’t always been plain sailing but we’ve had the difficult conversations and worked together towards the best outcomes we could achieve. We still have a long way to go but the memories and legacies of amalgamation and de-amalgamation are definitely starting to fade and the future is looking bright and full of prospects. We will have plenty to celebrate in the next 12 months. New facilities, community and sporting achievements, rewarding events and great opportunities to collaborate. I’m looking forward to opportunities that await us in the new year. Stay safe on the roads this festive season and be prepared for all types of weather. If you’re staying home, enjoy time in our backyard and relish the opportunity to show off our region to your visitors. From all the Councillors and staff I hope your home is

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. I, like the rest of Australia, have watched hundreds of Christmas advertisements. Every one of them is about “making money”. The Christmas message is the exact opposite of this.

greetings of a hospital, He was born in a shed out the back of a pub with a couple of ringers poking their head in to see if they could help. Later in His life, the only record of violence was when He attacked the bankers, turning over their tables. When the “good” people of the town were stoning a woman to death, He started writing down what all the boys had been up to themselves. It cleared the street real quick.

small thing for other people. And even though he was King, he got a whole stack of little gifts for people and he went door-to-door handing them out. He didn’t pay someone to do this, he did this himself. For those 2,000 million on Earth that are Christians (even those accepting the philosophy, not the religion), they believe that there is a duty to Saint Nicholas gave up his be humble and do things for own time, and as King he was other people. I myself always very busy, to just do a little feel very small and inadequate

beside the pastors and priests that I know because they are truly great people. The Christian message is a very simple one: love each other, do good to other people and make the world a better place. Christmas commemorates the birth of a bloke who 2,000m people believe brought us eternal life or at least created a bigger world than “me”. This bloke was born not in a nice home or the equivalent

With the recent hot weather, fires and now the heavy rain my mind has been turning to the wonderful work that our first responders and hospital staff do to keep us safe. I pay tribute to them along with our

Thank you all for your tireless, hard work that you do serving our community. Christmas is our time to spend quality time together. Some of my friends reckon His finest moment was when he turned water into alcohol. Sounds to me like he was a real good bloke. Some people even think he was the saviour of the world. When people say Christianity is dead, 3,000 of us watched the Rugby League Grand Final in Cairns when the Yarrabah team won with two unbelievable last-minute tries. As the final bell rang, they joined in a circle, knelt down and thanked the Lord.

In the most dreadful town in Australia, Pastor Ben crowbarred the rusted lock off the church door and nearly a third of the town’s population went to church two weeks later. Let us sing on Christmas Day Handel’s Messiah – “Joy to the world, the Lord has come”. Bob Katter Federal Member for Kennedy

Dimbulah Atherton win last T20 of year action night Rhee Tae Kwon Do Dimbulah Training Centre held its summer Action Night on Wednesday 5 December 2018. “There was 100% attendance by students on the night and all students performed very well,” Regional Instructor Phil Quayle said. “14 year old Dimbulah High School student Desarae Turnbull applied for her Junior Black Belt grading test. On the night the grading test comprised of several rounds of free sparring, performing patterns, one step sparing and dynamic board breaks.” Mr Quayle said Desarae was well prepared. “She has been training at the Dimbulah Centre for just over two and a half years and is a dedicated and respectful student,” he said.

“Desarae demonstrated that she can defend herself against an attacker and easily broke senior timber boards first attempt with side kick, back kick, turning kick and knife hand strike." Dimbulah Branch Instructor Gaye Taylor said as a Junior Black Belt, Desarae will be an asset to the Dimbulah Training Centre. “We look forward to her continuing training towards Senior Black Belt and inspiring others at the Dimbulah Centre,” she said. “It shows courtesy and appreciation when new Black Belts give something back to their Training Centre acknowledging the help they received from others. “We certainly love what we do – helping students achieve their goals”

Roosters name new coaches for 2019

Mens A Grade winners – Los Torros.

The Atherton Senior Roosters have named the club’s lower grade coaches for the coming 2019 Cairns District Rugby League season. Well known local player Trent Molloy is the new reserve grade coach, while new face Sam Harreman heads the under 18 campaign. Trent Molloy has played all his senior league at the Roosters and packs plenty of experience into his new roll at the club. School teacher Sam Harreman moves to Atherton from the Gold Coast and will be also develop a rugby league program with his work at the Atherton High. His experience includes coaching open school teams in the Bronco’s and Titan’s competition as well as representative sides for Wynnum Manly and the Gold Coast Vikings. Both will work with and under head coach Graham Clark who has had the 2019 squad back in training for several weeks now. The first block of pre-season training will wrap up this Thursday night for the Christmas break and resume on January 3.

Race day of the year Epic sixes finals

The Express Summer Sixes ended a blockbuster season with the grand finals held on Friday night at Lindsay Australia Stadium, Mareeba. 250 seniors and over 100 juniors took part in the off season tournament with organisers claiming this year’s competition was the most successful ever. In the ladies B grade final “Chicks with Kicks” Won 5-2 over “Nemesis’ while the A Grade ladies final went down to the wire as “Red Hot Chilli Peppers” won 6-5 in extra time over the “Golden Bulls”. The men’s C Grade final saw “Rambo Warriors” beat “The Honey Badgers” 5-3 on penalties after the scores were even after extra time. The Men’s B Grade was another close affair with “Barras” edging “Biggest Cakes” 4-3 in normal time. The A Grade Men’s final was an epic battle between last year’s finalists “Melendrino’s and Los Torros. The match was evenly balanced at full time with both teams scoring 2 goals, but in extra time Los Torros kicked into gear and came away with a 7-5 victory avenging last year’s defeat to be crowned Champions of the 2018 tournament.

THE countdown is on for one of the year’s most anticipated race days, with the Mareeba Turf Club’s Boxing Day races only one week away. Mareeba Turf Club’s Allan Holmes said everything was coming together nicely for the Far North’s favourite race day. The day will see a five race program kicking off with the Benchmark 65 at 1.15pm, followed by the QTIS Maiden Plate, the Class B Handicap, the Benchmark 60 and the final race of the day, the Benchmark 55 over 1500 metres. The day includes all the favourites of a country race day – live music, jumping castle and water slide for the kids and of course the ever popular Fashions on the field. Fashions on the field will be

conducted during the afternoon, and make no mistake, many of the entrants would compete strongly at Melbourne Cup fashion events. The hilariously popular human horse race, which is held on track after the last race of the day, will also keep racegoers entertained. This year community groups including the Mareeba Netball Association, Mareeba Gymnastic Club, Mareeba Pony Club and the Leukaemia Foundation will be looking after all the days food arrangements and patrons are asked to support these community groups in their fundraising efforts. No alcohol can be taken in to the club, but will be available for sale from bars located on the grounds. Security will be at the

gate to check any eskies being brought in. Mareeba Boxing day races have developed into a great social occasion and wonderful family event – a great opportunity to celebrate the festive season with family and friends. With everything going to plan, the club expects this year to be one of the biggest yet. “It’s always a great day and it keeps getting bigger and bigger every year,” he said. “With heaps of fun and action, both on and off track, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.” Gates open at 11.30am, before the first local race kicks off at 1.15pm. General entry is $15 per person, with pensioners $10 and children under 15 free. Visit the Facebook page for more info.

Gladiators go local COMING off what was a disappointing season for the A-Grade outfit in 2018, many people within the Mareeba Gladiators club are calling for a change in philosophy to ensure the upcoming 2019 season is a competitive one. With a competitive side being the club’s intentions moving forward, the Gladiators have taken a step in the right direction in achieving that by appointing Terry Aquilina as head coach. Aquilina has previously been involved with the Mareeba Gladiators and Innisfail Leprechauns as head coach over an 11 year period, which culminated in ten semi-final appearances, five grand final appearances and four premierships. Aquilina was also a player in the Mareeba Gladiator’s first Cairns District Rugby League premiership side in 1992. Aquilina said his reasoning for returning to the coaching ranks was one borne out of wanting to see change at the club. “It’s good to see a new committee has been formed who have the same goals as myself, and that is to bring the club back to a point where we have strong community support,” he said.

“That’s something that has been missing at the club, so for us to move forward there can’t be any personal agendas. “Our only agenda should be as a sporting club, and that is to promote the game of rugby league in a way that entices the Mareeba public to want to support us.” Aquilina noted that there are many challenges he faces as head coach, however he believes his coaching methods can bring a much-needed shift in attitude at the club. “I’m under no illusions about

competitive situation at the club to where young players can work their way up the senior ranks and have a strong desire to put on the Gladiators jersey. “One of the important objectives at the club this year is fostering our young talent from this year’s U19s and next year’s U18s sides,” he said. “If you don’t have a good crop of young players coming through the system that are proud to represent Mareeba and who want to reach the highest level of local rugby league, you will always fail as a club.”

paddock,” he said. “Any contact sport requires you to think under fatigue, and if you’re unable to do so, you will not be available for the pivotal moments and that’s what is needed to be successful as a team.” Aquilina said the criteria is simple, if you want to be competitive, you have to be doing what the other clubs are doing, if not more. “That is a standard we need to improve on and it is something we will be endeavouring to achieve,” he said. “Our performances have been too inconsistent in recent years and we need to ensure there’s a foundation at the club to where it allows for potential success.” The first training session for the 2019 season is on January 15, 2019, with a meet and greet at the Mareeba Leagues Club on Friday, January 11, 2019. With a new look committee and a coach as experienced as Aquilina at the helm, the future appears bright for the Mareeba Gladiators.

“One of the important objectives at the club this year is fostering our young talent from this year’s U19s and next year’s U18s sides” what’s going to be involved with this job, and there will not be any bold predictions or unrealistic expectations on my behalf,” he said. “I know that the change required at this club won’t happen overnight, however things will begin to improve if we start small and work our way up.” Aquilina said he wants a

Aquilina’s coaching style is a no-nonsense approach which highlights the importance of fitness and effort, while at the same time placing a strong emphasis on skill. “There is basic expectation that when you come to training, irrespective of your ability, you are fit enough to compete for the entire time you’re out on the

NEW SIGNING: Trent Barnard is excited to be playing for the Mareeba Gladiators in 2019.

Gold signing AS the Mareeba Gladiators prepare for the upcoming season, their hopes for greater success in 2019 recently received a muchneeded boost with the announcement of a new signing. The Gladiators confirmed over the weekend that they have signed former CDRL Gold Medal winner Trent Barnard, who is an outside back that possesses athleticism and skill. Barnard rose to prominence in 2013 when he scored a competition-high 29 tries, and he hopes to bring some of that experience to the club when he dons the Gladiator green. “I’ve been around for a while now, so one of my goals is to bring a strong culture to the club,” he said.

“I’m excited about footy for the first time in a while, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season and see where this team can go in 2019.” Barnard said his desire for change was the catalyst behind his decision to come to the Gladiators, and he appears confident in the club’s vision moving forward. “With some of the players the club had this year and a few of the players we will hopefully have next year, I think there will be a good mix of talent,” he said. “It is then just about having the right attitude at training and on game day and making sure we’re on the same page. “If we can do that I’m confident we’ll have a good year.”
