NEARLY 200 relatives descended from Mary Tully and Quock Lin Ding gathered in Atherton on Sunday for a family reunion.

Descendants from as far away as Hong Kong, the USA, Perth and Sydney made the trip north for a two day celebration that included a traditional Chinese ceremony at Atherton Cemetery, a gathering at Cairns’ Aquarium and lunch at Atherton’s Chinese Temple which saw the lighting of the traditional pig oven. It’s only the second time the oven has been used since it was discovered during an archaeological dig of the area.

The events gave 88 year old Cairns farmer George (Laurence) Wah Day an opportunity to reflect on his family’s unique and wonderful history. Mary and Quock were his great, great grandparents.

“Charles Lee Yan (George’s great grandfather) had emigrated here from China in the early 1990s,” he said. “He had a farm here in Tolga and married a local girl, Maggie.”

After Maggie died in childbirth, Charles sent his children back to China to live and a few years later his farm was re-possessed for returning soldiers from war.

“He died a broken man,” said George.

Part of Sunday’s reunion at the Chinese Temple included traditional Chinese dancing.

Town’s future questioned

A development application submitted to Tablelands Regional Council for a mechanics workshop in the CBD of Atherton is raising questions over the future of the town and the effectiveness of the council’s own Town Planning Scheme.

The business, Laneway Mechanical Atherton, owned by Guiseppe Barletta, has opened up in the old igloo on Main Street that backs onto Railway Lane.

Mr Barletta has applied to council for a Material Change of Use for the building – that was previously being used for storage - to switch it from Commercial to Low Impact industry so that he can run a mechanics workshop.

But it has been revealed the

business has been up and running since May despite not having official council approval. A council spokesperson confirmed there has been complaints made to them about the operation of the business, prompting them to investigate and rule out any fire safety and building safety concerns. They said they had issued a Show Cause notice to the applicant and that officers were working through the planning process before submitting their recommendation to councillors for decision making at a later date. He also said the council “is considering taking further action”.

Mr Barletta said he feels he is making good use of an otherwise abandoned building, in an area that is already bordered by other light industrial businesses and backs onto the Men’s Shed site.

“I’m doing everything the council says and have done everything by the book,” he said.

“I don’t think what we’re doing here is a problem. You’ve got the Men’s Shed right behind us and this old building isn’t good for much else.”

But among many objections to the application, one local resident has argued that the CBD of Atherton is not the place for a new mechanics workshop.

“I spend a lot of my time helping businesses to understand how they can move into the future and I really feel very strongly that TRC needs to back its own principle and see our commercial centre as a commercial centre and not a light industrial centre,” said Christine Doan who has lodged a formal objection to the application as a resident and

not as the president of the Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce.

“I am so glad to see another business opening up in Atherton.

But this particular business, let it open up in an area zoned light industrial.”

Ms Doan said she backs the council in its vision for the future which has included discouraging any development and expansion of light industrial business in the centre of Atherton.

However, she said that if this application is approved she is concerned it will set a precedent for other potential businesses to do the same, a suggestion that a Tablelands Regional Council spokesperson denied.

“Each application is assessed on its own merits against the Planning Scheme in force at the

time of the application, therefore there is no precedent affecting this application or future applications,” he said.

“The assessment is carried out by planning officers who are guided by the Planning Scheme; in this case (being an impact assessable application) a recommendation will be presented to council for decision. “ Ms Doan has lobbied both the Mayor Joe Paronella and Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick to discuss the issue.

“I understand and applaud the fact that lately TRC has very much discouraged existing nonconforming usages,” she said.

But a council spokesperson said the application “must go through a stringent assessment process” before a decision is made and that “it is worth noting

that the applicant has the right to apply as the use is not prohibited by the TRC Planning Scheme.”

Ms Doan said she hopes that councillors will vote objectively on the application when the time comes.

“I’d love to see the TRC more transparent and more open to having enough back bone to stick to its principles,” she said.

“I certainly saw that it did when the residents out at Eastern Connection Rd objected to the telecommunications tower. The council voted against it on town planning grounds. I applaud that and I want to see them do the same thing here. Not because there’s a problem with any one business person, but because there’s a problem with the principle and the possible precedent it sets.”

TRC’s excuses for rates debacle

The pathetic explanations and excuses, plus apologies by the TRC Mayor and councillors on the horrendous rate hike imposed on several farmers has solved nothing. It has in fact made us more aware how incompetent these councillors and administration are. It seems now from the Mayor down, they have resorted to shifting the blame to everyone but themselves. What a Category F comedy!

What Tableland ratepayers are well aware of, is that if it wasn’t for the Rate Payers Action Group bringing this debacle to the attention of the Council and public right back at the well attended public meeting at the International Club in early October 2017, nothing would have been done. The public meeting attended by some 150 people started the ball rolling on the issue. The Council however chose to ignore and ridicule the Rate Payers Action Group as not representing the general rate payers.

Constantly blaming Valuations as the cause for the huge rate hike. We were gagged every step of the way from seeking direct face to face questions from the Mayor and councillors. It was only at the very end they decided to listen to a delegation who had

researched and prepared some very solid figures and calculations on the rates issue.

It will be interesting to see which category rate payer is going to be affected next with exorbitant rate increases. It is a fact that our Category A rates have risen by over 100% in a little over 4 years. How much more can we absorb?

When grave mistakes are made, the very valid argument is, that the “buck stops at the top”.

Why then is the Mayor not doing the honourable thing and resigning? He and the rest of council were asleep at the wheel and trying to shift the blame for the debacle is nothing short of pathetic!

Arrogance and hubris not unexpected Thanks go to The Express and reporter Rebecca Wallis for the excellent explanations of TRC’s rates debacle.

Arrogance and hubris amongst petty politicians, while unattractive, is not unexpected.

But aren’t we paying our top Council “executives” incredibly well to ensure that such massive stuff-ups don’t happen?

Why do we need these “executives” at all when they aren’t

as effective as a small group of ratepayers?

One way to reduce rates is to trim the Council’s fat, starting with the heads.

In The Express dated 5.7.2017 I wrote that some small farmers’ rates would rise by $2000.00 which was pod hood by the council. How 12 months changes things. The council now admits that a massive mistake has been made. This has been made by an inexperienced council. It was not in previous councils.

I call on the Mayor to advise the ratepayers the cost of the following: • Payout, if any of previous CEO (Ian Church) • Payout, if any of Deputy CEO (Matt Hyde) • Payout, if any of Planning manager • Payout, if any of Finance manager • Payout, if any of former CEO (Hurriyet) • Cost of election Division 6 • Cost of advertising for new replacements • Cost of the rates review I understand that the 15% cap cost the budget $450,000 and the

minimum general rate approximately $300,000.

It all adds up and in my approximate estimation it could be between $1 million and $1.5 million. This is totally unacceptable.

This is the biggest business in the shire. I call on the mayor to immediately resign, he can’t handle the job. Stop wasting our money.

Devoid of humility Mayor Paronella’s apology falls well short in addressing the magnitude of the rates fiasco. His apology is devoid of any sincerity or humility.

Not only were the rates errors totally avoidable but, because of the Mayor’s arrogance, all concerns raised were ignored completely resulting in a protracted campaign by ratepayers and Cr Anthony Ball to finally expose the errors.

In one of his many dismissive statements the Mayor accused ratepayers of wasting council officers’ time. Mr Paronella claims that he trusted and respected the advice of his officers. Yet once he was “made aware” of the errors, he must have realised that he had been deceived by these same people. Why then did he continue to heap adulation on CEO Babacan upon her resigna-

tion? Why did he ask her to stay longer? By this stage he should have acknowledged the shortcomings of those he supposedly relied on.

Whilst there may not be conclusive evidence that the Mayor was complicit in the cover-up, his subsequent conduct and statements strongly suggest otherwise. Mayor Paronella continued to insist that “there was minimal affects on the budget” and denied our claims that the effect of the errors was significant. The rates review has now revealed that the MGR error resulted in a $300,000+ loss in revenue.

If Mr Paronella truly wishes to make amends and demonstrate he’s learnt from this experience, he must direct his personal apology to the following.

COMMUNITY- for his contempt towards them and for refusing to listen to their concerns.

CATEGORY F and G farmers - for causing undue financial stress and hardship.

COUNCILLORS- for gagging them, for not allowing them to engage with ratepayers and for misrepresenting them on every occasion.

RATES STAFF- for underestimating their abilities, experience and expertise.

RATE PAYER ACTION GROUP – for accusing them of not representing ratepayers and calling them troublemakers.

INDIVIDUAL RATEPAYERS- for dismissing their concerns with his trademark insensitive remarks and for simply “ showing them the door.”

In addition there have been the THREE well published resignations in the wake of the rates fiasco as well as the external reviews conducted by LGAQ and Mead Perry – all at an undisclosed cost to the ratepayers/ council.

Mr Paronella seems oblivious to and unapologetic for the massive financial cost to the community and the resulting loss of confidence in the Office of Mayor.

At the ordinary meeting of TRC on Thursday 28th June it was obvious that all councillors had lost respect for the Mayor and that any confidence in Mr Paronella had also been well and truly eroded.

Finally we welcome the appointments of CEO Mr Justin Commons and Finance Manager Ms Erica Bowden who have most certainly brought much overdue expertise to the TRC. Ed Kochi, Stephen Raso and Sandra Curcio Tolga

Parliamentary privilege should go We are frequently told that politicians are our representatives and they are necessary to make responsible decisions on our behalf and keep our wonderful country running efficiently and effectively.

We are also treated to almost daily instances in parliament where these “representatives” hurl abuse and vitriol back and forth across the chamber in a manner that should bring shame to them all.

We must all do everything we can to get rid of that ridiculous “parliamentary privilege”

law as a matter of urgency, and make sure that all parliamentarians are held legally responsible for every word they utter inside the chambers, as we are on the outside.

Who is to blame for un-stuck road?

Another reseal on the Malanda-Millaa Road gone wrong and more on the way.

Is quality assurance or playing with computers the cause of this? Who is to blame? For 30 years I worked with Eacham Shire Council and if conditions weren’t right bitumen jobs were cancelled. Now councils and Main Roads work systems have changed. I never thought I would see a truck bogged on a bitumen road.

Today orgainisers with no work experience think they have all the answers but a pick and shovel would show them they have a lot to learn.

I think more trouble is on the way. Are these jobs being supervised by experienced people?

Why are we wasting all our fruit and veg?

We on the Tablelands and Mareeba areas are so fortunate to have an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables and as you drive around the area you feel a pride at what we can produce both on farms and in backyards.

What I don’t feel proud about is how we waste a lot of it. At this time of year nearly every backyard has a mandarin, orange of lemon tree loaded with fruit.

We can only eat so much but why waste the rest? I see fruit all over the ground lying rotting away and think what a waste. If you have an excess of fruit or veg, how about putting in outside in a wheelbarrow or box and let people take it and you can benefit by taking some of theirs. As such we could be healthier and save money. Could we get neighbourhood groups together and make a central area to leave food in a bring-and-take concept?

In years gone by I remember our family grapefruit tree laden with fruit and we paid a nominal amount to the community groups such as Scouts who would pick all the fruit and deliver it to the hospital to use for patients breakfasts either whole or as fresh fruit juice in the winter months to help boost Vit C. So you may say the hospital and nursing homes haven’t got time to juice and it’s a health regulation thing. So lets as a community rally around and say what rubbish.

We have older people who would love to volunteer to the nursing home or hospital and spend an hour or so juicing.

We have hundreds in our community on Centrelink benefits who should, and may want to do something for their money.

So lets not waste all this manpower and food, we could boost the immune systems of our sick and vulnerable.

Sticky situation for road users

It was a sight unlike any other last week when road users came to a sticky stop while travelling along the Millaa Millaa to Malanda Road.

Routine re-surfacing works went wrong when the newlylaid bitumen was not set, despite vehicles being allowed to use it causing irreparable damage to tens of cars and trucks.

The work was undertaken by Colas Queensland on behalf of the Department of Main Roads, which issued an immediate apology.

“The situation is completely unacceptable and I apologise on behalf of the department to all those people whose vehicles were damaged and travel plans disrupted by this extremely unusual event,” said Transport and Main Roads District Director Sandra Burke.

“We became aware of an issue with about two kilometres of road surface on June 25 and immediately reduced the road speed from 80km/h to 60km/h,

swept the road surface and put signs in place.

“What occurred yesterday will be the subject of a departmental investigation in close consultation with the contractors.”

Ms Burke went on to claim that the de-stabilising of the road surface was as a result of recent weather conditions.

“We believe recent cold and wet weather followed by a period of warmer conditions combined to destabilise the road surface which effectively became a sticky substance,” she said.

Work crews got straight on to repairing the damage but not before over 60 vehicles were damaged by the sludge. Main Roads have promised compensation for anyone affected.

The road was temporarily fixed up in time for the weekend’s Malanda Show but Ms Burke said a specialised panelheating machine was being transported from Brisbane to the site.

“This machine uses infra-red heat technology to accelerate the sealing process and can be used

in variable weather,” she said.

“We have asked for a TMR bitumen seal expert to travel to the site to provide technical support.”

Coles Queensland also apologised for the stuff up.

“We sincerely regret any damage caused to vehicles traveling on the road and any inconvenience created by this situation,” said a spokesperson for the company.

“Our first priority is the safety of the public. Our operations team is mobilised and working with TMR to make the road safe to travel as a matter of urgency.

“Our technical experts are also investigating the cause of this issue with TMR to provide appropriate technical remedy in the shortest possible time frame.”

TMR was also monitoring two other sites on Palmerston Highway and Kennedy Highway, near Upper Barron Road, which had also experienced some stripping.

Remedial works using specialised equipment would be undertaken on a section of the Ken-

nedy Highway on Monday.

Ms Burke said there was a claims process motorists could follow to seek compensation for any damage they believed had been caused by the incident.

“All claims will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, and we will ensure proven claims receive fair compensation,” she said. Any motorists whose vehicles have been damaged should contact TMR on 4045 7144.”

With Mareeba Lionesses

It was a great night at the Mareeba Lionesses Variety Concert on Saturday 2nd June. A big thankyou to all the talented artists who entertained and kept the audience tapping their feet and clapping along with the music.

Raffles were drawn and the total amount raised on the night was $3,273.05 which will be donated to Cancer Research.

The Biggest Morning Tea was held at Vincenzo's and once again a donation will be given to the Cancer Council. Many thanks to those who attended.

Our monthly Pensioners Morning bingo is held every 2nd Tuesday of the month in the CWA Hall at 9am. We welcome new senior citizens to come along and have some fun. Morning tea is served and their are lots of prizes to be won. We would love to see you there.

The Lionesses are busy every month with Meals on Wheels, Hospital Trolley, Mareeba Football Canteen and selling raffle tickets to raise money for the many charities that we support. We will soon be selling tickets for our annual Pink Ribbon Day which is to be held on 11th August at the Mareeba Turf Club. Remembering the Battle of Hamel 100 years on ONE hundred years ago on July 4, a 93-minute battle was fought during the First World War on the Western Front that is heralded as one of Australia’s greatest military achievements and is still considered a masterpiece of logistics and combined arms warfare.

The Battle of Hamel was a turning point in the First World War and the first time Australia fought alongside our American allies and we have fought together in every major conflict since.

Ann Salisbury, the daughter of Victoria Cross recipient Harry Dalziel, made a quick visit to the north and in particular Irvinebank where her father was born. Harry was awarded the Victoria Cross in the Battle of Hamel.

Ann remembers her father well but said that he had a terrible time when he arrived back from the war as he was shot in the head six months prior to receiving the award.

Her father was a humble man who always said that his mates who didn’t make it back deserved it more than him.

“He paid for it though” she said ,” he had headaches and fits for the rest of his life his injury was horrific , his brain was exposed when it happened, he couldn’t , wash his head , swim , play cricket he was a fine horseman, all the things he loved to do , mum had to clean his head with a fine tooth comb. Donate glasses to a good cause Tablelanders can join in the drive to help people in remote areas of Papua New Guinea see more clearly, by donating their old glasses.

Mareeba Rotarian Yolande Entsch is behind The YWAM Glasses Drive which has so far donated more than 2200 glasses to those in need.

“It’s been fantastic to see the response so far,” said Mrs Entsch.

“We knew that many people had pairs of prescription glasses and sunglasses lying around the house, not being used, but we could only hope that the response would be so positive at this point in the campaign.

“I’ve got no doubt that if this momentum continues we’ll hit our target of 5000 pairs by July 18, which will make an incredible gift for patients in rural

and remote areas of Papua New Guinea who struggle with their eyesight.”

Mrs Entsch has now put the call out to Mareeba Shire, Tablelands and Douglas Shire residents, who can drop their unwanted pairs of glasses at the following locations: Atherton Library, 16 Robert Road, Atherton. The donated glasses will be handed over to the optometry team onboard the MV YWAM PNG when it docks in Cairns later this month on its way to PNG, so they can be distributed to patients.

On the ground, the optometry team educates the Papuan people about the dangers of staring into the sun and by providing sunglasses, it means they can do daily activities without squinting and reduces the risk of eye growths.

Regaining their sight means children can start or resume education, while being able to read their Bible again means a great deal to them.

Ag workforce program receives funding boost A Far North Queensland agricultural workforce and training program will continue its work future-proofing the region’s industries after the Queensland Government renewed its funding commitment.

Joe Moro, chair of FNQ Growers – the auspicing body for the Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network’s (QAWN) Far North Queensland manager Leanne Kruss – said the funding commitment announced in the recent state budget, was an investment in the future of agriculture in the region.

“Leanne has been in the position for several years and has developed a results-driven program that works across all commodities including horticulture, sugar, livestock and broadacre cropping,” Mr Moro said.

“The programs are critical to help position our agricultural industries to handle the changes of modern farming, deal with an

aging labour workforce and continue to help them capitalise on new opportunities.”

Ms Kruss said relationships and networks were crucial to the success of the program.

“Often it’s just sitting in a kitchen with farmers listening that makes all the difference to their ability to move forward positively in their business,” Ms Kruss said.

She said said much of her work was aimed at developing and delivering long-term, sustainable solutions for the region’s agricultural industries.

“Arming individual enterprises and growers with the tools and skills will help position them and industry to take full advantage of potential growth and ultimately lead to increased productivity,” Ms Kruss said.

She is also working with CQUniversity and BLA to host the Innovation in Agriculture: STEM Careers bringing together local industry experts, farmers and STEM students. Being held on 25 July in Atherton, the forum aims to arm students and the community with an understanding of the rapid growth in modern farming.

Countdown is on for the biggest rodeo ever!

Hold onto your hats! The biggest event of the year for Mareeba takes place this weekend at Kerribee Park with a heady mix of fairy floss, show bags, rides, bulls, horses, utes, woodchopping and much, much more.

This year’s rodeo will be bigger and better than ever before with a revamp to the rodeo grounds that includes more seats, renovated existing seating, a brand new PA system and a flash new lighting set up for the night time fun.

As usual, Friday night’s Downtown Parade gets the party started, followed by two full days of rodeo action and a whole heap of fun.

With a history dating back nearly 70 years, the event has become a local icon with people travelling from all over the State to experience it; and with some of the country’s best competitors lining up to compete, you can be assured that non-stop action is set to storm Kerribee Park’s arena.

From 7.30am on both Saturday and Sunday, there is a full program of action including bull riding, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, ladies and junior events, plus more.

Saturday night will feature the crowd pleasing ‘Battle of the States’ where Queensland and NSW teams will go head to head to claim the bragging rights.

Teams compete in Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Steer Wrestling, and Barrel Racing from 7.30pm.

Time event competitors compete side by side – so you can cheer on your team and see who wins the match-up.

When the action in the ring slows down for a break, take a wander out of the arena to the ag show exhibits, rides and displays on offer.

Message from Rodeo Association President As the winter weather is upon us with glorious days and cool nights the ground dries up and the grass turns golden brown we all know it is fast approaching show time and to us in Mareeba and Districts this means Rodeo Time.

Winter in Far North Queensland is what attracts many visitors and regular traveller’s year after year and we welcome them back to Kerribee Park which is looking remarkably different this year.

The Department of Housing and Public Works, Sport and Recreation, Get Playing Plus Grant Scheme has allowed us to revitalise the Arena with new state of the art Grandstands, LED Lighting and Sound System due to a Grant of over $900,000 and contributions from the Rodeo Committee of $450,000 and for this we are truly grateful. The Association has been able to achieve in One (1) Year what would have taken Ten (10) Years with out the support of the Department and this has allowed us to create a whole revamped Rodeo experience with more seats in the current safety standard, better quality and more even distribution of lighting with no delay in switching and Music

Quality Sound around the arena perimeter allowing for the removal of the Centre Speaker system and overhead cables. These facilities had served us well and were a credit to the people who designed and built them many years ago and have gotten us to where we are today.

The Rodeo Festival is upon us already and a team of willing workers have once again exceeded our expectations with improvements to the venue and setting up of this facility for what is to come over the next two weeks. A Little bit of rain has settled the dust and provided our caretakers with a bit of relief from watering and greened up the grass ready for the influx of people as they descend on Kerribee Park for the Rodeo.

Fourth place against best in the world

In just his fifth competition ever, Mareeba’s Joey Clark finished fourth place at the Mr Universe Championships – an annual worldwide bodybuilding competition.

Held in Singapore on June 30, the 2018 WFF (World Fitness Federation) Universe event attracts the best bodybuilders on the planet and former Mareeba Gladiator and dad Joey was part of the Australian team that took part.

The 35-year-old competes in the ‘physique’ division where he is judged on his image.

“It’s a little bit different to hard core body building,” he said.

“It’s more the total package.

They’re looking for an aesthetic physique; something that the general public can relate to. And then on stage they’re also looking at your marketability. You’ve got to be quite good looking, the hair has to be good. You have to have that certain thing about you, that certain swag.”

Originally from New Zealand, Joey has been living in Mareeba since 2005 and starting training when he was 21 after a shoulder injury.

“I just fell in love with it,” he said.

Now he is setting his sights on being the best in the world with a plan of attack for the rest of the year that includes state and national qualifications and a stab at the World Championships taking place in November in Los Angeles.

Earlier this year he won the Open and Novice divisions at the WFF’s Southern Hemisphere Championships.

A determined and dedicated competitor, Joey was disappointed with fourth place at Mr Universe and is using it as an opportunity to lift his game ahead of the next round of qualifiers.

“I wasn’t happy with fourth,” he said.

“That’s not me. I get quite dejected, not being a sore loser, but you get your heart set on winning. And then you don’t get it, it tore my heart out. But not dejected in the sense that I want to give up, just dejected in the sense that my mind is already ticking over things and saying ‘right, what’s next?’, ‘What have I got to do to improve?”

It’s a hard core lifestyle that sees Joey in the gym daily for two hour weight training sessions, followed by up to an hour of cardio. And he lives on a strict high protein diet.

“I only eat between 14001600 calories a day on a 100kg frame which is nothing,” he said.

But there’s nothing in the world he’d rather be doing.

“I love it because I inspire people to live a healthier lifestyle, people look up to me,” he said.

Highlanders reign supreme

The Highlanders have taken out the Mareeba Basketball Association Men’s Championship, outclassing Fresh on the way to a 68 to 27 Grand Final victory on Thursday night.

The Highlanders fought back from an early first-quarter deficit, running away in the second half as their smothering wholeteam defence took its toll.

Osbourne brothers Brandon and Leighton rained points from outside, joining Reef James in an effective long-bombing tirade.

Jake Priestly showed up big at both ends for the Highlanders, contending with and containing Fresh weapon Ely Simmons , and providing inside-presence and scoring on offense.

Christy Perkes was the best of the vanquished Fresh side, playing physical behind the ball while remaining nuanced and bold with it in hand.

The Highlanders’ win followed a comprehensive 58 to 39

for Brick Squad over Jets in the u18s final.

Brick Squad, the competition minor premiers, reached a season crescendo in the second half of the decider, pushing on from a 30-all halftime scoreline to run out 19-point winners.

Team leader Priestly was phenomenal throughout, as were young-guns Tom Flynn and Zayd Myrteza, who both hit pivotal three-pointers in the second half.

Creflo Morris handled the rock with aplomb and was a defensive standout for the victorious 18s side.

Newcomer David had his best performance of the season, competing strongly on defence before putting the finishing touches on the victory with some classy finishes in the fourth quarter.

Anthony Long and Brandon Osbourne were the best of the Jets, turning in polished allround performances and always threatening to detonate from three-point land.

Former Gladiators get together to reminisce about the good old days

Past and present Mareeba Gladiators came together last Friday for a night of reminiscing at the Mareeba Leagues Club.

With more than 200 former players, committee members and volunteers from Mareeba West, East and Gladiators there were plenty of good laughs and stories to be heard. On Saturday morning the ladies of former players enjoyed a morning tea at the Mareeba Heritage Centre Café.

Everyone gathered again that night to watch this year’s under 19s, reserve grade and a-grade take on the Atherton Roosters on home ground.

Mareeba Gladiator president John Arcidiacono said it was a great weekend of catching up with old mates.

He said the highlight for him was seeing former player and manager Joe Pennisi and listening to his stories about back when

he was part of the club.

The 93-years-old is one of the oldest players still alive.

Mr Arcidiacono said Pennisi was a manger for 18 years however he was involved with the club for about 20 years.

“The highlight for me was meeting up with Joe (Pennisi) at 93 and seeing him doing so well,” he said.

“Joe was involved with Mareeba East up until 1979 when

we joined with the Cairns District Rugby League and started playing in their competition.

“Another volunteer Reg Camp used to be our masseuse and it was great to catch up with him and everyone else and listen to their highlights from back in the old days. Mr Arcidiacono thanked everyone who attended the reunion and help orginaise the weekend, especially Terry Roos for contacting past members.

World Cup holiday fun at MUFC

Soccer stars in town for development clinic The Mareeba United Football club welcomed former Socceroos and A-League stars Jade North and Archie Thompson to the far north last week as the pair travelled across the state running their football development clinics.

On Tuesday evening the pair inspected the Bulls home ground Borzi Park and were very impressed with the facilities saying that they were better than some of the facilities in and around Sydney and Melbourne.

After overseeing the Bulls premier division and reserve grade put through their paces they got to mingle and chat with the teams after training to get some firsthand advice from of Australia’s most recognizable stars.

On Wednesday Jade and Archie both attended their clinic at which over 60 local junior hopefuls were put through a series of drills and game scenarios during the course of the day.

“It’s our turn to give some-

thing back to the game that gave us so much” said Archie “It gives us an opportunity to see what’s around at the very grass roots level of the game and what we’ve seen so far is very impressive, there is a lot of talent here and it’s that talent that needs to be nurtured .

“Some of these boys and girls could be representing the country in the future”.

Jade North said: “We’re here just to teach the very basics of the game, if you have the basics

down pat everything else falls into place, the simple things are very important and it’s also important to have fun doing them.

“I think it’s the first time that any former players from an elite level has come to the regional areas to run clinics such as this.”

After their state wide clinics the pair will head home to Melbourne and reassess the tour and may well be back again next year.

The Socceroos dream at Russia’s World Cup may be over, but MUFC is offering kids arcoss the Tablelands to come and join in a five-a-side moc world cup competition on Thursday, July 12 at Borzi Park, Mareeba.

The 2018 World Cup Gala day is open for all boys and girls from ages 6 to 16 to join in the fun. The gala day is part of the Get Going Clubs initiative which the club was successful in obtaining to give kids the opportunity to play the world game and get into the World Cup fever.

The Queensland Government provided $7,220 to Mareeba United Football Club Inc to purchase equipment including goals, bibs, cones and train volunteers in match play to support football at Mareeba to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.’

MUFC Gala Day organiser Alex Srhoj states the day is all about fun and getting kids involved in the game and participating.

“It’s a great opportunity for

kids to participate and have some school holiday fun and get into the World Cup spirit” Mr Srhoj said.

The World Cup Gala Day will be a five-a-side competition based on the World Cup grounds and standings, mimicking the World Cup draw and seeing if results match real life. It is being run from 10am to 1pm on Thursday the 12th at Mareeba United Football Club.

“If anything, it will be great for the kids to get out of the house, run around and make some new friends,” said Mr Srhoj.

“They don’t need to be soccer kids, they can be rugby league, tennis, cricket, doesn’t matter, come along join in and have some fun.”

As part of the funding, the club has been able to supply bibs for each country, new portable goals and new field markings, as well being able to pay for refs for each game to keep score and run the matches as if they were over in Russia.

Age brackets will be 6-8 years, 9-11 years, 12-14 and 1516 years of age, male and female.

Kids can make their own teams and pick their own countries and first in best dressed scenario.

Roosters go home with Tableland Cup

A determined Atherton Roosters continued their winning ways with a 50-10 defeat of the Mareeba Gladiators at Davis Park on Saturday night.

It was back-to-back 2018 wins for the Roosters over their arch rivals after winning 66-6 against the Gladiators back on June 17. On Saturday night, the Gladiators were first to score three minutes into the contest for an early lead of 4-0 over the top of the table Roosters. Soon after tempers flared resulting in three Gladiators and one Atherton player all sent for a ten minute stint in the sinbin. It was during this period that the Roosters started their night with three tries to lead 14-4.

Another try just before halftime pushed the Roosters further ahead 20-4 for the break. The restart saw Mareeba first to score, closing the gap to 20-10 at the 49th minute.

However, Atherton replied with six unanswered four pointers to finish with a ten tries to two victory.

Willem Foster, Jack Willis and Ned Blackman all scored doubles for the Roosters who also claimed this year’s Tableland Cup. But the win has come at a huge cost for the Roosters with star forward James Clark breaking his cheekbone in the early exchanges. Clark had surgery on Sunday and it is yet to be determined how long his recovery from the injury will be.

The Cairns District Rugby League first grade points table after 13 rounds is led by Atherton on 22 points followed by Brothers 21, Innisfail 15, Kangaroos 14, Mossman 13, Tully 12, Suburbs 10, Ivanhoes 10, Yarrabah 9, Mareeba 4, Edmonton 0.

Atherton also won the under 19 match 34-10 over Mareeba on Saturday while the reserve grade game went to the Gladiators 38-4. Season 100 continues for the Atherton Roosters this Saturday against the Mossman Sharks at Mossman.
