Join in little Gia’s fight

THERE haven’t been too many families that have touched the hearts of the Mareeba community quite like the Smith family.

Karl and Regan Smith have had to watch on agonisingly as their two-year –old daughter Gia has battled T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

Having had to abruptly leave Mareeba to receive medical care in Brisbane more than 70 days ago, Gia and her family has fought admirably in the face of exhausting treatment.

The Smith family thankfully haven’t had to do it all on their own, with enormous support provided by community members, businesses and organisations who have helped with a number of generous donations.

“The support from everyone has been overwhelming,” Gia’s mother Regan said.

“It’s amazing how many people have wanted to help, and it’s hard to articulate how much this means to our family.

“Without the generosity from the community we wouldn’t be here in Brisbane by her side, which means the world to us as I believe our presence has made Gia’s experience much better.”

Gia’s father Karl said his daughter’s Chemotherapy has been one filled with peaks and troughs.

“For the most part Gia has responded well to the treatment,” he said.

“In saying that, there have been some complications along the way including side-effects to medications, low blood counts and the like - which unfortunately is just the way it goes when you’re dealing with such intense treatment.”

“It’s just hard,” Mr Smith said.

“I am absolutely blown away with how she has handled it she’s unbelievably strong and nothing short of amazing.”

Mrs Smith echoed her husband’s sentiments, alluding to the positive outlook Gia maintains despite the daily struggle she has had to endure since her

diagnosis.

“She’s aware that she’s sick and knows she needs to cure what she refers to as her “owie blood”,” she laughed.

“For all of the things they have put in her body, for her to still be smiling and continuing to be the same old Gia is remarkable.

“She looks at every day as a new day which has helped us all,

and I’m proud of her resilience more than you could imagine.”

Gia’s display of spirit has garnered deep admiration from those who know her story, and anyone interested in helping Gia in her fight can do so by donating directly to the Indie Rose Foundation, where every cent will be given to the Smith family to assist in ongoing expenses.

Further funding secures future for farmers and Mossman Mill

WITH plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Mossman Mill’s future in recent months, Far Northern Milling received great news in December as the State Government announced they will commit a $25 million support package to secure the Mossman Mill.

The news came less than two months after the Federal Government pledged $20 million in funding for the mill, and will pave the way for Far Northern Milling’s plans for an innovative bio refinery.

Far Northern Milling’s Secretary Bronwyn Dwyer said the support package from the State Government was a very welcome announcement.

“This was the last piece of the puzzle in terms of funding,” she said.

“We have worked tirelessly with the State Government over the last three or four months for this, and it now gives us the confidence to go forward and finalise the rest of the due diligence and conditions we need for the transaction.

“Then once we have finalised and are satisfied, we should be able to move on with the acquisition.”

Although the exact date for the transaction is unknown at this stage, Ms Dwyer said they are hoping for it to be confirmed before the end of January.

“If the transaction were to go ahead, we really need it to be fi-

nalised before the season starts – which will allow us to start the slate clean,” she said.

“At this stage the major hurdle that remains for us is the environmental due diligence.

“We had a meeting with the Department of Environment and Science last week which was extremely helpful to gauge where we are in relation to possible environmental issues.

“That meeting gave us reassurance that we will be able to work through any problems we encounter.”

Ms Dwyer said the announcement signals an exciting time for growers in Mossman and on the Tablelands, and wasn’t short of praise when noting the enormous efforts of those involved throughout this process.

“Firstly I would like to thank the Douglas Shire Council and Nick Trompf from Advance Cairns, who have worked extremely hard in helping secure funding from both the State and Federal Governments,” she said.

“Member for Cook Cynthia Lui’s involvement was also very beneficial, as she organised key meetings with Ministers.

“And lastly I want to recognise the board of Far Northern Milling, they have been doing a tremendous amount of hours to ensure this can happen for the growers of the Mossman and Tablelands areas, and without them this wouldn’t have gone ahead.”

Far Northern Milling director Liza Giudice, Member for Cook Cynthia Lui and Chair of Far Northern Milling Maryann Salvetti are all ecstatic with the news of State Government funding for the Mossman Mill.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui echoed Ms Dwyer’s excitement about the announcement, expressing her jubilance in securing the State Government’s funding via a statement on her

Facebook page.

“I have been fighting to get certainty for the growers, and to get a clear pathway forward to build a sustainable future for the industry,” she said.

“This funding brings the opportunity to keep the mill running and building a bio refinery a step closer.”

“I thank Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Minister Cam-

eron Dick for supporting this project.”

“I would also like to thank Maryann Salvetti and the growers for working with us to deliver this outcome.”

Federal funding flows for roads and infrastructure in FNQ Mareeba Shire Council will receive $4,598,660 as part of an allocation of $25.9 million in Federal Government funding provided under the new Roads to Recovery Program that will be distributed to 16 councils across Far North Queensland.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the highly successful Roads to Recovery Program was a collaboration between federal and local governments.

He said the federal government would continue to support Far North Queensland councils with the ongoing maintenance of local road infrastructure,

facilitating greater access and improved safety, economic and social outcomes.

“These allocations under the Roads to Recovery Program are great news for Far North Queensland,” Mr Entsch said.

“This funding provides councils with the ability to invest in upgrading local roads, thereby helping to improve safety for all motorists.

“This funding will also lead to economic growth but more importantly job creation in these communities.

“One of the best aspects of this program is local councils, who have the local knowledge,

decide which projects should be made a priority.

“The program is particularly important for the more remote communities in Far North Queensland who rely on this funding to build and maintain the infrastructure their communities need.”

Mr Entsch said the federal government was able to extend and increase spending in programs such as Roads to Recovery because it had managed the nation’s finances effectively.

“A stronger economy is the key to delivering better services and delivering the infrastructure our communities need,” he said.

Violence spills onto streets

TWO brawls broke out in the centre of town in Kuranda last Tuesday prompting a significant police response.

At approximately 12:30pm on Tuesday, January 8, Kuranda Police responded to a disturbance which occurred outside the Foodworks store on Thongon Street.

Kuranda Police’s Officer in Charge Sergeant Shane Mattes said the incident on Thongon Street involved roughly 40 people.

“Out of that incident, we have already charged four adults,” he said.

“We are also currently reviewing our CCTV and our body-worn camera footage to determine other offences.”

Sgt Mattes said that the dispute on Thongon Street led into another large-scale disturbance later that evening involving up to 100 people on Barron Falls Road.

“In relation to that, we have charged one juvenile that is cur-

rently being dealt with under the Youth Justice Act, and as mentioned earlier, there will be further charges prosecuted once we have reviewed our CCTV and body-worn camera footage,” he said.

Due to the size and violent nature of the disputes, Kuranda Police were forced to call for back-up to ensure residents’ safety.

“We had police officers drawn from Cairns, Smithfield, Mareeba and Atherton to come and assist us,” he said.

“They were both fairly violent incidences - there were people armed with pieces of timber, tree branches, baseball bats, garden rakes as well as rocks being thrown.”

Sgt Mattes said the brawls were a result of an ongoing dispute between families in the region.

“There have been community tensions between family groups over the last two years that have resulted in sporadic incidences

of violence,” he said.

“We’ve engaged with both sides of the conflict and referred them to mediation services along with utilising the Queensland Police Cross Cultural Liaison Unit’s strategies to help.”

“We have to talk to both parties to find out exactly what the issues are and go from there.”

Tablelands Patrol Group Inspector Russell Rhodes visited Kuranda on Thursday and exercised a foot patrol through town, speaking with community members, local businesses and accommodation providers.

“I spoke with roughly 10 businesses and one hotel in town, and they were happy with the response from the police units,” he said.

“Kuranda is a great community and a tourism hot-spot, and we are ensuring that the residents’ and tourists’ safety remains our priority.”

“We are going to achieve that by addressing and resolving this problem as quickly as we can.”

Increase in dog bites drives Ergon Safe Entry program Ergon Energy workers and meter readers won’t enter yards where dogs are not securely restrained as part of new safety measures being introduced this month.

There were 71 injuries from dog bites and 199 other incidents and close-calls between July 2017 and October 2018.

“The safety of our employees has to come first and that means if there is a dog on a property that isn’t restrained – we won’t go in to do work of any kind,” Area Manager Wayne Alderman said.

“We’ll talk to customers about what options are available and if no one is home, we will leave information to help them do a self-read.”

“In some cases where there is a dangerous dog or known access issue, a remote read meter will be installed.”

The new Safe Entry measures will begin on 14 January and will apply to all properties

regardless of whether they are in an urban or rural setting.

“Ergon Energy will work with our customers and communities to make the new safety measures work so we have a good outcome

for our people and our customers,” Mr Alderman said.

EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE DELIVERING EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE

Malanda residents continued their fight to save the Laurel trees along Mary St, however they were unsuccessful as TRC confirmed last week they will be removing the trees.

THERE has been strong opposition from Malanda residents to the proposed Mary Street Upgrade, and they had the opportunity to grasp a greater understanding of the development as a public presentation was held last week.

The presentation consisted of an arboriculture assessment report courtesy of independent arborist Chris Keatley.

Mr Keatley provided members of the Tablelands Regional Council and the public in attendance an explanation of the physical condition of the Mary Street Camphor Laurel trees.

The purpose of the site visit

was to allow those present to ask further questions and seek clarification in relation to the findings in Mr Keatley’s recent report ahead of the final decision regarding the Mary Street Project.

A key topic that was raised was whether or not some or all of the trees can be rehabilitated, which is something TRC have repeatedly said they are in favour of.

Malanda resident Robyn Brown said the arborist’s presentation was full of lies and a complete waste of time.

“The arborist was very illinformed on the trees and their condition,” she said.

“The arborist was speaking nonsense and the public were aware of it, many of us have lived here for decades and have done extensive research.”

“Their reasoning for getting rid of the trees is supposedly because they are in poor condition and pose a safety threat to the community, which is simply not true.”

Ms Brown said there is no consideration for the elderly demographic that reside in Malanda.

“So many people that live here know the integral role the Laurel trees have played and continue to play in this commu-

nity,” she said.

“They are home to wildlife and it is extremely upsetting that Council aren’t taking the public’s concerns about Malanda’s habitat into consideration.”

“This is knee-jerk planning on Council’s part and it is becoming ridiculous – the community is angry.”

After the conclusion of the arborists report last week, it was confirmed that the trees will be lopped this week given the weather permits – with the stumps to be removed when roadworks commence (approximately April).

RADF community grants open APPLICATIONS are now open for the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) 2018-19 Community Grant Round for projects to be conducted between May 2019 and April 2020.

Individuals, groups and associations, and arts and cultural companies within the Mareeba

Shire Council area are invited to apply for funding for arts, cultural or heritage projects that meet the RADF objectives to build local cultural capacity, cultural innovation and community pride.

The local priorities for RADF 2018-19 are – cultural tourism, youth arts engagement and

public mural partnerships. Applicants may apply for RADF grants of less than $10,000 and must show other sources of project income.

The RADF 2018-19 Community Grant Guidelines and Application Forms are now available for download. Applications must

be submitted by 5pm Thursday February 28, 2019.

“There were assurances made that the office would remain in Mareeba, and for there to be a shift in that message is disappointing,” he said.

“There was a commitment made to the community that isn’t being upheld, and it’s not a good look for the shire.

Mr Bensted said he would like to see local members reside and work in the shire which they represent.

Ms Lui’s polarising decision has driven strong discussion from both sides, and it is one that is only continuing to strengthen.

Northern Gulf’s future looks bright A new look Northern Gulf Resource Management Group board met for the first time last month on Monday December 17 to steer the direction of the organisation, and steward Natural Resource Management throughout the region into the future.

At the November Annual

General Meeting Northern Gulf members endorsed the appointment of two new directors to the board.

We would like to welcome Jessica Fealy and Brian Muirhead, who replace retiring directors Ian Adcock and Will Attwood.

Jess and Brian join returning board member Ellen Weber, who along with Riki Gunn and Chair, John Brisbin, make up the new five member, skills-based board.

The appointment of new board members completes the revision of the constitution, which now provides an improved gov-

ernance framework to support the work of Northern Gulf into the future.

Northern Gulf would like to thank Ian Adcock and Will Attwood for their years of service to the communities of the region and wish them well in their future endeavours.

Grazier retires a life member after 15 years on Terrain NRM Board A Mt Garnet grazier says “keeping an eye on the greenies” was his motive for joining the Wet Tropics’ new natural resource management board in the early 2000s.

Fifteen years later Ken Atkinson has been made a life member and he laughs at his original notion.

“I’ve learned a lot along the way, and seen a lot of changes in the way land is managed,’’

he says of his decade-and-a-half commitment to not-for-profit natural resource management organisation Terrain NRM. Mr Atkinson retired from the board recently as the last of its initial members.

came known as Terrain NRM. “In the Wet Tropics, it’s been about getting people on board rather than standing up the front and telling people how to do things, and that’s something that’s worked for both farmers and conservationists,’’ Mr Atkinson said.

“With the collaborative approach, sustainable and productive land management is going from strength to strength.”

Terrain NRM Board chair Keith Noble said Mr Atkinson’s “quiet counsel and wry smile” would be greatly missed.

“Being a fourth-generation Tablelands grazier as well as a helicopter pilot, Ken really does have a birds-eye view of the country and he has brought this detailed perspective to Terrain NRM's board table and fitted it into the broader landscape picture over the years,’’ he said.

Major earthwork projects on a local cattle station are stopping erosion and preventing hundreds of truckloads worth of fine sediment from flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.

Engineers have designed a 100m-long rock chute to divert water from an eroded gully between the Herbert River catchment and a large dam system as one of the projects in a $3 million initiative to reduce sediment loads on the Reef.

The work is happening on Woodleigh Cattle Station near Mt Garnet, through the Australian Government’s Reef Trust IV program.

Terrain NRM’s Jen Mackenzie said 5500 tonnes of rocks were being used to create the chute, linking Charcoal Creek with a dam complex that covers almost 2000 hectares, and isolating a badly-eroded gully system that gained 70m last wet season.

The earthworks are one of up to 10 major gully remediation projects planned for the Herbert catchment as part of the $3 million Herbert Gully and Grazing Program. Other works include repairs to old tailings dam complexes from alluvial tin mining ventures on grazing land in the Herbert catchment.

Ms Mackenzie said grazing practice changes were just as important.

“This project includes fencing, the creation of new offstream watering points for cattle, revegetation projects and weed management,’’ she said. “And we’ve had a great roll-up at workshops for graziers. We’ll be holding more next year.”

Woodleigh Station’s Kate Waddell said it was important to leave the land in a healthy state for future generations. The property has been in the family for more than a century.

“Over the last 10 to 15 years we’ve started things like wet season spelling – where we fallow paddocks – and we’ve stopped burning,’’ she said. “We’ve noticed a big improvement in our grasses and soil biology, including the water-holding capacity of our soils.

“This project is the next step.

We are putting in 13km of new fences to split paddocks for better wet-season spelling, we have off-stream watering points going in and there’ll be revegetation work at the earthworks sites.

“Even with good grass cover and light stocking rates, some of our soil types erode easily during heavy rainfall so there has been quite a bit of erosion over the years.

“It’s important to keep our soil on the property – it’s our lifeblood.”

Sediment is one of the major materials affecting the health of the Great Barrier Reef. Fine sediment and soils affects the growth rate and survival of corals, seagrasses and other plants, and in turn affect other sea life relying on these plants.

Terrain NRM’s Jen Mackenzie said the Herbert River Gully and Grazing Program would run for five years in partnership with landholders, and sites like Woodleigh Station would become models for future projects across the Great Barrier Reef catchment.

Roosters’ marquee signing Graham Clark Jnr is excited about the season ahead with the Atherton Roosters.

THE Atherton Roosters have acquired a marquee player for the upcoming season after confirming Graham Clark Jnr will join their senior squad in 2019 for the club’s 101st season in the CDRL. Clark Jnr, 25, boasts an impressive resume that consists of

appearances at the semi-professional level with the Northern Pride and the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, along with a season playing for the Canterbury Bulldogs in the National Rugby League’s Holden Cup competition.

News of Clark Jnr’s acquisition follows the club’s success in resigning Luke La Rosa for this season, and in doing so have established one of the most supreme second row pairings in the competition.

Clark Jnr spent the 2018 sea-

son in the Northern Pride system, and when the Queensland Cup side offered to renew his contract this year, most people in rugby league circles assumed he’d be running out onto Barlow Park as opposed to Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

Clark Jnr said his decision to join the Roosters was one made due to time commitments.

“I recently just bought the farm off my old man in East Palmerston and will be devoting quite a bit more time to that,” he said.

“I also have a young daughter so this will be quite a busy year for me.”

Despite only being in his mid-20’s, Clark Jnr will bring plenty of rugby league knowhow that is sure to bolster the Roosters’ senior outfit.

“I think I’ll bring good experience and knowledge to the club, and I’m looking forward to playing under my dad (Graham Clark Snr) who will be coaching the side,” he said.

“There’s a good group of young players coming through the ranks, and hopefully dad and I can build on the good culture that is already at the club and foster some of that young talent through.”

With a player of his calibre comes expectation; however Clark Jnr said he prefers to block out any external pressure.

“The only pressure I feel is the pressure I put on myself,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter what level I play, I am always my hardest critic which I think helps me perform at my best.”

Clark Jnr said he can’t wait to put his best foot forward this year, all while noting that he still has aspirations to play at the highest level.

“I want to make it known that I’m not stepping down from semi-professional footy permanently,” he said.

“If I play well with the Roosters, that will hopefully mean I stay in contention for future opportunities at the state level in the future.”

The Atherton Roosters will be looking to improve on what was an impressive season last year and stake their claim for their first CDRL premiership since 1994, and they appear to have the structures and personnel in place to make that possible in 2019.

Taking women’s cricket by storm

The love of the game and hard work has paid off for Tolga cricketer Abby Toshach.

THE LAST month has been a stellar one for Tolga cricketer Abby Toshach as she has put together some exceptional performances in recent tournaments across the state.

Abby, 15, has taken part in three tournaments throughout Queensland since the beginning of December, of which included the U15s Schoolgirl Championship in Maroochy-

doore, the U14s Girls Queensland Cricket Association Competition in Ipswich and the Jess Jonassen Cup in Mackay.

Abby’s performances in Maroochydoore resulted in her being selected to represent the Queensland Schoolgirls side later this year – largely thanks to her game-defining 85 not out in the grand final that helped her team win the competition.

Her achievements in the other two tournaments she participated in were also to be applauded, as she became the first girl to score a century for her age group in Ipswich and refused to give up her wicket in four innings in Mackay.

Abby said being selected to represent Queensland for the sport she loves is an amazing opportunity and privilege

that not many kids her age achieve.

“Being able to experience such a high standard of sport and being involved in the future development of women’s cricket is something I have been hoping for since the start of my career and am looking forward to being involved in,” she said.

“Over the past couple of years in my cricketing career I have worked hard to be selected in representative teams.

“I have been involved in numerous development camps and training sessions that have boosted my skills enough to reach this level of cricket.”

Abby was quick to heap praise on her father’s efforts in helping guide her young yet promising career.

“My dad has played a very big part in my success,” she said.

“Without his knowledge of the game and persistence I wouldn’t have been able to develop my skills to such a high level and come this far in my career.”

Abby’s father Gary Toshach said her accomplishments are a result of her hard work.

“Abby is an extremely dedicated trainer,” he said.

“She is working in the nets consistently to improve on her technique and power and that is noticeable in how she has been batting.”

“I’m extremely proud of what she has been able to achieve.”

Abby said she aspires to be a part of the women’s WBBL and have a professional career representing her country for the Southern Stars, and if her recent form is anything to go by, it appears a real possibility.
