“This briefing will assist anyone considering running as a Councillor or Mayor in the upcoming March local government elections to understand the roles and responsibilities of being an elected member.”

The session will be accessible via a live webinar for people who are unable to attend in person.

The event will take place Thursday, February 20 at 5.30pm at 15 Vernon Street Atherton.

Water restrictions reminder

THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) wants to remind everybody that level two water restrictions are still in place on the Tablelands.

According to the TRC “You can only use sprinklers and watering systems 6–7am and 6–7pm.

Odd-numbered houses can use sprinklers and watering systems at these times on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and even-numbered houses on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Handheld hoses fitted with trigger nozzles, watering cans and buckets can be used at any time.”

Apprentice opportunities

THE Tablelands Regional Council has announced that eight new trainee and apprentice positions are now available.

“We’ve been fortunate to again receive funding to provide these opportunities in our workforce,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“We’ll be offering 12-month traineeships in civil maintenance, community services and tourism, finance and knowledge and systems, horticulture, libraries, and a four-year plumbing apprenticeship.

“Anyone interested should come to our information session, 5.30-6.30pm Wednesday 26 February in the Community Education and Disaster Coordination Centre, 15 Vernon Street, Atherton.

“You’ll get to meet some of the staff, including current trainees and apprentices, and ask questions about the program.

“Most of our trainees and apprentices remain in our workforce, find alternative employment or take up study after their time with us.” said Mayor Paronella.

Applications are open from Friday, February 21 to Sunday, March 8, 2020. Julie and Laurie Wright of Bimini Park Brangus and Working Kelpies with the puppies auctioned last week at the Saleyards. Dog breeders donate to fire relief

BEFORE the start of the first sales of 2020 at the Mareeba Saleyards, buyers were given the opportunity to bid for a purebred kelpie puppy.

Supplied by Bimini Park Brangus and Working Kelpies owners Laurie and Julie Wright, a litter of kelpie puppies was shown off before the auction started.

The winning bidder got a choice of the puppies with all of the money raised going towards the Burrumbuttock Hay runners who are currently transporting hay to fire affected properties in New South Wales.

Mr Wright came up with the idea after he heard a heart breaking story about a farmer who lost all his working dogs in the fires.

“A lady and her husband down near Rockhampton last year lost all their working dogs to fires,” he said.

“So we decided to see if we could do something to help out with the next litter we bread.

“We were originally just going to donate a pup, but we thought better and decided to help raise some money too.”

The winning bid of $500 went to Bill and Rose German of Hurricane Station in Mount Carbine.

This wasn’t the only good news heard around the stock yards with two records being broken in the first 2020 sales.

Sales for both the meatworks cows and steers passed those of previous years and set a good motion for upcoming sales.

Sales are held every Tuesday in Mareeba.
