Cancer survivor raises above to help others A BRAIN cancer survivor on the Tablelands has raised more than $13,000 for the foundation that helped her survive four separate brain operations. In 2017 Gina Raccanello from Minbun, was diagnosed with two tumours in her brain. At the time Gina chose Professor Charlie Teo, the renowned neurosurgeon in Sydney to operate. Dr Teo successfully removed the tumours but unfortunately, due to the type of cancer the tumours returned. Further operations in 2018, 2019 and 2020 have helped to keep the tumours under control. Through Charlie Teo, Gina met Nate Moule from Mareeba who recently celebrated his fourth birthday. Nate’s mother Kate was originally told that her son would be lucky to make a year, thanks to Dr Teo’s operations Nate has had extra years added to his life. Being a patient and meeting other patients of Dr Teo is the reason why Gina chose to fundraise for The Charlie Teo Foundation for brain cancer research. Gina organised two fun ways to help raise funds for The Charlie Teo Foundation, with Super Hero Nate’s Mega Raffle which was wheelbarrow full of prizes which was
drawn on October 3 and the Brain Wave Pigeon Sprint which took place on September 26. Gina said she was blown away by the communities support. “We raised just over $13,000 which was donated to The Charlie Teo Foundation for brain cancer research,” she said. “We had over 2000 people buy a ticket in the Pigeon Sprint and we had a number of winners with the mega raffle. “It’s been a great response from the community so a big thankyou to everyone.” Gina also received a thankyou from Dr Teo himself. “I've just heard from my good friend and patient, Gina, that you have generously supported the Charlie Teo Foundation with several events up there in Queensland,” he said. “I'm so sorry for the COVID restrictions because under any other circumstances I would've been there with dancing shoes on. I am acutely aware that there are many other charities that you could've donated to but please know that your hard-earned money will not be wasted. “The CTF is extremely transparent with where the funds are spent and how much goes to administration.
HELPING OTHERS: Gina Raccanello with Dr Charlie Teo after her operation in 2019 has raised more than $13,000 for the Charlie Teo Foundation.
“Brain cancer kills more children in Oz than any other disease and has an enormous socio-economic impact on society. My patients and their loved ones thank you from the
bottom of their hearts for your kindness and generosity. “I can't wait to thank you personally once the restrictions are lifted and the next event has the green light.”

Kuranda train transport petition gathers steam
PETITION: Mercy Graham and Ranjini Rusch, pictured at the Kuranda Railway Station, have started a petition to get regular public transport train services returned between Cairns and Kuranda.
A NEW petition has been launched by Kuranda locals to get regular train services returned between Cairns and Kuranda. The petition was started by Mercy Graham after she moved from Kuranda to Cairns for work due to the lack of public transport options. Mercy said she keeps watching the Kuranda Scenic Rail roll past empty every day and thought it was a waste. “I decided to start a petition, to get some regular transport options between Kuranda and Cairns for locals,” she said. “It needs to be an affordable option, at the moment Queens-
land Rail offers 20 per cent off for locals which is still about $40.00 one way.” In its first week the petition had garnered over 1000 signatures and Mercy said they would like to get over 3000 signatures. “With the train often empty and a lack of alternatives, a train targeted at locals would contribute to public transport options for locals and encourage movement and help the economy,” she said. “We are hoping for a couple of carriages or for some new services that would transport locals from Kuranda and surrounds to their workplace in Cairns.
“We want Queensland Rail to offer these services at the same rates that you would normally charge people to get on a bus, we are looking for public transport prices.” Mercy claims that many older people are afraid to travel on the range and that younger people are missing out. “Some kids are excluded because they can’t attend sporting events or access The Esplanade or the movies, while the train goes direct to Cairns Central. “It would allow Cairns people to come up for the day at their own leisure and also allows residents in Kuranda to spend more time in Cairns. “Let’s give it a test and see what people need.” Ms Graham said other options could be rolled out later if the train proved to be a success. “If there was a late train, people in Kuranda could experience the bars and restaurants in Cairns and still get the train home, it would change the whole landscape,” she said. “The Kuranda range is stifled and dangerous, a lot of locals are nervous to drive it.” Ranjini Rusch who runs the Affordable Public Transport Kuranda Facebook page said that traders still wanted the tourist trade but locals needed cheap and reliable transport between Cairns and Kuranda. “The infrastructure is already there, it’s a win win situation, it will take pressure off the range,
it will allow people to commute, it will encourage more people from Cairns to visit Kuranda and it will also help the local cassowary population that is currently being decimated by traffic,” she said. “The current transport options have disengaged Kuranda from the Cairns community. “Everyone we have spoken to has been in favour of the idea.” Ms Graham and Ms Rusch said they both had fond memories of catching the train to Cairns to go to school nearly 30 years ago. “We don’t have easy access to Cairns or vice-versa,” she said. “People have been talking about this for a while and because it’s owned by Queensland Rail people have put it into the too hard basket. “If we can spend billions on road infrastructure, then we can spend a little on maintaining the rail line.” Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said using the Kuranda Scenic Railway for public transport was a matter for the state government. “This is entirely a matter for the Queensland government and Queensland Rail to consider in association with the costs and logistics for providing such a service to the public,” she said. To sign the petition go to www.change.org
New campaign underway to boost visitors A NEW fresh marketing campaign to target interstate visitors to Kuranda is underway. In June of this year the Mareeba Shire Council chose not to continue with their in-house marketing, after commercial rate payers in Kuranda chose not to continue paying a levy for Tourism Kuranda. Instead The MSC contracted Bang Media in Cairns to deliver a 12-month digital marketing campaign to lure visitors to Kuranda. The campaign aims to attract local, intrastate and interstate visitors as travel restrictions ease. “While the campaign is still in the early optimisation phase, it's performing well,” Mayor Angela Toppin said. “In just four weeks, the campaign has reached over 21,000 people across the country through geo-targeted advertising. “This campaign is digitally savvy with targeted advertising to get the best customer reach,” Cr Toppin said. “The campaign is designed to enable potential travellers’ to access information for their travel de-
cisions by directing them to Tropical Tourism North Queensland's Kuranda webpage and from there then onto individual operators.” Mayor Toppin said improvements have already been made to the TTNQ Kuranda webpage to enhance the user experience for potential travellers. “We are excited to work with Bang Media to deliver this exciting marketing campaign to showcase Kuranda to the rest of the nation.” Creative Director of Bang Media Angelo Saliba said the agency would be working closely with Council and Kuranda businesses to ensure the campaign has the best effect on influencing decisions to travel to Kuranda using SEO, SEM, and video. “There has never been a more challenging time to be in the tourism industry.” he said. “Our campaign will target those who are in, and those intending to travel to the region. ”As restrictions lift and travel becomes more fluid, the campaign will expand to increase visibility.”

incumbent with all pre-election predictions having Cooper as the clear winner. Mr Crawford saw a +3.1 per cent swing towards him and the ALP on preferences while Ms Cooper and the LNP saw a – 3.1 per cent swing against them. Mr Crawford is also the
Minister for Fire and Emergency Services and has held Barron River since 2015. Mulgrave MP Curtis Pitt, and Member for Cairns Michael Healy also both look to be safe in retaining their seats. All figures quoted were correct at time of deadline.

Queensland election
Knuth makes history Hill MP Shane Knuth cast his vote.
Mr Knuth spent Saturday night watching the election unfold at the Innisfail Brothers Leagues Club. “I did enjoy a few beers with my supporters,” he said.
THIS WEEK’S SPECIALS
“It’s a great honour and privilege that residents of Hill have once again put their faith in me and it’s a very humbling experience to get so much support throughout the region” – Shane Knuth MP –
KATTER Australia Party’s (KAP) Shane Knuth is now the second longest serving MP in the current Queensland parliament after again winning his seat of Hill on Saturday. Mr Knuth first entered parliament in 2004 and since then through redistributions has won three successive seats – Charters Towers (2004–2009), Dalrymple (2009–2017) and Hill (2017– present). Even though online bookies had Mr Knuth at nearly even money, winning Hill was something he said was never a given. “It’s a great honour and privilege that the residents of Hill have once again put their faith in me and it’s a very humbling experience to get so much support throughout the region,” he said.
Mr Knuth received 52.9 per cent of the primary vote with +4.7 per cent swing towards him and also a massive 75.6 per cent of the vote on preferences with 79.8% counted. “It’s still too early to tell, but yes it does look like a stronger swing than the 2017 election,” Mr Knuth said. All three KAP incumbents did well over the weekend with Nick Dametto (Hinchinbrook) and Robbie Katter (Traeger) also receiving strong wins in their respective electorates. “We have always had a belief that you put the region and the electorate first before party politics,” Mr Knuth said. “We are very grateful to be back and serving the people of our electorates.
“My first order of business will be having sending out thankyous to everyone who helped out and supported me during this campaign and then I will be having a zoom call with Nick and Robbie to discuss where we go from here. “In the not too distant future I will be putting on a thankyou BBQ for all those people that helped and supported me through the campaign, it was a long process with the pre-polling centres having extended hours.” Australian Labor Party Candidate Michael Hodgkins received 19.9 per cent of the primary vote. “I’m quite pleased with the numbers, especially when you look at the two-party preferred split,” Mr Hodgkins said. Mr Hodgkins puts Labor’s win across the state down to Queenslanders feeling safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I think people have felt very safe, there hasn’t been much negative impact from The Palaszczuk Governments handling of the pandemic,” he said. Mr Hodgkins said that even though he may have lost the seat there is still work that needs to be done. “I feel I have started a conversation and a lot of people are interested in what I’ve got to

say,” he said. “Some of the conversations that I’ve started to have with communities over the past few weeks, I want to continue to have.
“There still a lot of things I would like to do and if I get an opportunity to do them as a resident or as a potential politician I will certainly continue to do the work that needs to be done. “I also want to say thank you to my team who have been fantastic, I’m humbled by their support and the way they handled themselves.”

Nominations open for Australia Day awards THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) have both announced that they are now accepting nominations for their respective Australia Day awards. The Tablelands Regional Council is asking the community to nominate someone who deserves recognition for their 2021 Australia Day Awards. “The awards recognise outstanding locals who make our region a great place to work, live and play,” said Mayor Rod Marti. “This year’s theme of ‘Reflect Respect Celebrate’ encourages us to reflect on the 60,000year history of our nation and the new chapters that are written every day. “It reminds us to consider the highs and lows of our history and to respect the stories of others. “As a nation we can celebrate our achievements and us, it’s people.” Mr Marti said it’s the special people in the community that the TRC wants to recognise and celebrate. “Some have achieved wonders with their sporting endeavours while others give up many hours of their time to help in our community,” he said. “We want to honour them and show they are appreciated. “It only takes a few minutes to nominate someone for an award.” Nominations are open until Friday, December 18, 2020. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin is also encouraging residents to nomi-
nate individuals and community groups that have gone above and beyond to help others. “This year has been extraordinary in terms of dealing with the challenges and opportunities of Covid,” Cr Toppin said. “COVID-19 has impacted the way we live our lives but has not stopped the outstanding contributions of so many within our community and we must acknowledge theses, residents and community groups.” “Mareeba Shire is very fortunate to have so many wonderful, dedicated and communityminded people who volunteer and give back to their local community. “Whether it’s a service group or sporting club, your neighbour or a stranger, please consider nominating them for an Australia Day award,” Cr Toppin said. Australia Day Awards are open to Mareeba Shire residents and community groups that have made an outstanding achievement or contribution within the community. Residents are encouraged to submit nominations online through Council’s website. Nomination forms can also be downloaded from Council’s website or collected from Council’s customer service centres in Mareeba and Kuranda. Nomination forms should be returned to the customer service centres or posted to PO Box 154 Mareeba Q 4880. Nominations must be received no later than 3pm ON Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
SHOPPERS at Atherton Square will no longer have to worry about their shopping trolley running away with their groceries after new Trolley Stoppers were installed. The new Trolley Stopper provides a safe and secure way for shoppers to park their groceries without them do a runner. Run away shopping trollies have been a long time thorn in the side of many Atherton shoppers due to the incline of the car parks. Kathleen Dudley of Yungaburra is relieved that she can finally put away her groceries and keep her shopping trolley secured. “This is a fantastic idea I have had my trolley run away a few times just missing parked cars,” she said. “I used to use my foot to stop the trolley from running away it was a struggle and it got a bit messy. “Now I can take my time unloading and not have the trolley take off.” WIN: Kathleen of Yungaburra is excited that she will no longer have to stop her trolley from stealing her shopping with the installation of new Trolley Stoppers at the Atherton Square.

Locals elated as bridge reopens OPEN: After being closed for five months, the John Doyle Bridge on Anzac Avenue was reopened on Friday morning.
IN what was great news for motorists across Mareeba, the John Doyle Bridge was finally reopened on Friday morning after being closed for five months. Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said it was great to be able to finally use the new bridge.
“The bridge is finally open, I have just driven over it and it is wonderful to have that access again for our community,” she said. “It was a very old bridge and it required extra work on it but we are satisfied that it is a very study and safe bridge for our
residents.” Repairs were originally scheduled to start in June 2019 but had been delayed several times to avoid congestion when road works started on the new lights on Byrnes Street. Work finally began in June of this year, with more delays
announced for the reopening of the bridge in September. Cr Toppin said the delay was caused by unforeseeable building problems. “As opposed to a greenfield site where you are starting from scratch when faced with a refurbishment project such as this,
TRC land sell off TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) has announced the sale of 22 freehold properties in Innot Hot Springs, Herberton, Millaa Millaa and Ravenshoe. The decision to sell these properties was passed at last week’s monthly council meeting which was held in Ravenshoe. The move to sell the properties comes off the back of four properties in Ravenshoe, Atherton and Malanda being approved for sale at the September Council meeting.
According to last week’s council agenda “Considering the current underutilisation of the properties proposed for sale and the ongoing maintenance costs to keep up the appearance of these properties the sale will result in a positive cost benefit result to Council.” The 22 properties vary in size from 766 square metres to 74,000 square metres. Mayor Rod Marti said the TRC has had these parcels of land for decades and they’re really surplus to needs.
“Some of the parcels are costing us money to maintain and by selling them we are giving the community the chance to realise the land’s potential,” he said. “The land will be made available for sale by auction over the coming weeks. “If the properties pass in at auction, the land will be listed for sale on the open market. “The sale of these parcels is important in improving the financial health of TRC and one of several steps we are
taking to reduce the drain of idle assets,’ said Mayor Marti. A council spokesperson said they are now searching for a real estate agent to sell the properties on behalf of the council. “A local real estate agent will be contracted to coordinate the auction and sales,” they said. “We will go out with an EOI or some other form of procurement process and the auction date will depend on the agent.”
you inevitably encounter unexpected elements,” Mayor Toppin said. “As expected, when working on an old bridge, a number of decisions were only able to be made when the existing superstructure was removed and exposed the concrete elements.
Once this had been done it was then revealed that additional works were required to accommodate the new girders and concrete deck. “Our staff has worked incredibly hard under trying circumstances and I am very pleased we have been able to reopen the bridge today (Friday). “Council has continued to deliver a number of projects while working on the bridge including the Pickford Road Upgrade at Biboohra, Mareeba’s Byrnes Street Beautification Project, the water main upgrade at Rob Veivers Drive in Kuranda and exploration works for a new water bore at Chillagoe.” The John Doyle Bridge upgrade included replacing the superstructure of the bridge (timber girders and steel deck) with steel concrete and strengthening the existing concrete substructure (piers and abutments). A council spokesperson said “The works will increase the overall lifespan of the bridge, providing access to a significant residential area and a reliable transport route.” An official opening will be held at a later date.

STAFF at the Mareeba Hospital held a fundraising event last Tuesday to end their month of fundraising for Breast Cancer Awareness. During the month of October, Mareeba Hospital staff engaged in fundraising activities like money boards and raffles to raise money for the McGrath Foundation Breast Care Nurses. McGrath Foundation Breast Care Nurses are exactly what they sound like, nurses
that specialise in breast cancer treatment; they also provide support for the patient and their family during treatment. In 2020 alone it is estimated that 53 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia every day, the money raised by the Mareeba Hospital will help put McGrath Breast Care Nurses wherever they are needed around Australia. Mareeba Community Health Child and Family
Health Nurse and organiser of the event Jo Kell said that this is not only a way to raise money for a good cause, but a way to boost staff morale. “Today is an accumulation of all the hard work that everyone does throughout the hospital and we have been fundraising for the McGrath Breast Care Nurses,” she said. “We wanted to raise money again this year also as a way to improve staff morale, we have worked really hard.
“The staff are a really good bunch they always come out and support fundraising events like this.” Over $1,400 was raised over the month blowing past the initial goal of only $500 which was a welcome surprise to Mrs Kell. “My aim was $500 and we have far exceeded that so the Mareeba community and the hospital have really come out and supported it which was great,” she said.

Former Ravenshoe business owner in fight of her life
Former Ravenshoe resident Hayley Buchanan is currently overseas receiving treatment for cancer to save her life.
HAYLEY Buchanan has had quite the life since leaving Ravenshoe in 2018, this includes an unfortunate cancer diagnosis and a journey overseas in an attempt to extend her life. Originally from Melbourne the 39-year old mother moved to the Tablelands region in 2010 where she settled in Kuranda. It was after moving to Nimbin that Hayley became involved with the food lovers club which eventually led her to move to Ravenshoe and open her own community shop/café, the Octopi Garden. “I have so many fond memories, the bio dynamics meets, my time at Silvervalley on the wild, soaking in the hot springs and the Octopi Garden and all the joy it brought,” Hayley said. “I conceived my daughter and birthed her at Atherton Hospital, I lived in the region for 10 years and eight of those were in Ravenshoe. “Ravenshoe was my home I loved it, so many memories and I never thought I’d leave.” After a family crisis forced her to move back to Melbourne in 2018, Hayley was living with
her family in relative bliss until a shock diagnosis. In February of 2020, Hayley was diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumours (DSRCT), a rare cancer that has only been reported 200-400 times worldwide with a 15 percent five-year survival rate. After being denied palliative care in Australia due to the extent of her metastasis Hayley saw no other choice but to seek help outside of Australia. After a tumultuous journey trying to get out of Australia in the midst of COVID, Hayley finally succeeded, arriving as the first medical tourist permitted into Thailand on July 19. Now in week 11 of her treatment at the Verita Life Clinic Hayley has had a 30-50 percent reduction in tumour bulk with some lesions and tumours dissolving completely. “Knowing how aggressive this cancer can be the plan is that until I’m either cancer-free or until surgery is possible, I need to stay here and continue treatment,” Hayley said. “The combination of treatments at the clinic work syner-
gistically targeting the fast dividing cancer cells and also the slow dividing cancer stem cells. “Treatment also supports the immune system to function optimally with minimal to no long term side effects.” To date Hayley’s treatments in Thailand and Australia have amounted to $150,000 and is set to increase if she continues treatment. “I’m currently in Thailand still having intensive treatment whilst considering next options, one of those being debulking surgery,” she said. “I’m still waiting to hear from a surgeon in Australia to see if I’m eligible for this and to return to Australia. “If not I’ll need to stay here longer however I don’t have the funds for this currently.” To keep her treatment and hopes alive a GoFundMe campaign was started by Hayley’s sister to support her journey and treatment costs. If you would like to support Hayley and get her home to her daughter you can donate at https://gf.me/u/y3v4qu
Cruise on in to Atherton THE very next Cruise-In for the Atherton Men’s Shed is happening this Friday, November 6. A Cruise-In is where local motoring enthusiasts get to show off their unique, antique, classic cars, trucks and motorbikes. It’s also one the Atherton men’s shed signature events and fundraisers. Secretary of the Atherton Men’s shed John Whyte said “On the Tablelands there are a few hundred people with classic or restored cars and these people like getting together for social nights and there’s not a lot of opportunity for that,” he said. “Our Cruise-In is not a car show, there’s no competitions or show and shine, it’s just people who own cars, getting together showing of their pride and joy and sharing
their passion with the public as well.” In the past the Atherton Cruise-in has attracted up to 90 cars, trucks or motorbikes on display and anyone can bring their car along to be put on display on the night. The Atherton Men’s shed started in 2011 and since they planned to have five Cruiseins per year, but due to COVID the upcoming Cruise-In

will only be their third event for 2020. The Cruise-In kicks off at 5.30pm and admission is free for the whole the family. The Men’s Shed will be running a BBQ and sausage sizzle to help raise funds on the night. For COVID tracing purposes everybody must register their details on arrival and personal distancing must be practised.

EVERY year one teacher from Mareeba State High School (MSHS) receives the Mareeba Medal. The prestigious medal is a token of appreciation to a teacher to recognise the hard
John was working at MSHS right up to the start of this year, but due to mental health concerns it was time for a change of pace and he decided to make the move to Cairns Distance Educa-
and thankless work they do each and every day. This year’s recipient was former teacher, John Sellars, who was an integral part of the school for 26 years.

tion. After initially studying to become a surveyor and working in the field on the Sunshine Coast, a lack of jobs forced a career change. Lyndell Bridges, John’s girlfriend who would later become Mrs Sellars was currently moving into the teaching field and so John had decided to pursue teaching so that they could be together. 1989 was the start of John’s teaching career with him and Lyndell both starting their teaching at Dimbulah State School. “Teaching at Dimbulah State School was a really rewarding experience as a pair of new teachers who were willing to work hard and get involved in the community,” John said. “From that experience the rewards were immense; we lived in the community for seven years and developed lifelong friendships.
“A lot of the students I taught at Dimbulah have gone on to have kids which I have then taught at Mareeba.” John made the move to MSHS in 1994 to move to a bigger town with bigger opportunities without losing the touch he had developed with the community. Spending the majority of his teaching years at MSHS, John was involved in a lot of other activities and programs outside of class including the annual musical performances, presentation nights and sporting events. MSHS Principal Scott Whybird presented John with his medal as a surprise at his new job at Cairns Distance Education, a surprise which John was extremely honoured by. “I feel very proud and humbled to be honoured like this, I have the medal here sitting on my desk at school,” he said. “This medal also recognises
the involvement and the extra effort that you put into the school. “Teaching has been extremely rewarding in the fact that you are developing new relationships and working on new challenges every day.” When describing John, Mr Whybird said that many of the school events from presentation nights to sporting events would not have run as smoothly if not for John. “John has got everything that you would expect from someone who is committed to a school and has been a quiet achiever,” he said. “He doesn’t go looking for the limelight, but he is always involved behind the scenes. “He is always the person who takes the time to help staff to be better at their jobs and make them feel better without ever asking anything for himself.”
More funding for BDR THE Australian and Queensland Governments recently announced that they will pledge a combined total of $14 million to seal around 30 kilometres of the Burke Developmental Road between Normanton and Dunbar. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the project would boost
local industries and support approximately 23 jobs during construction. North Queensland-based Senator, Susan McDonald said the Burke Developmental Road was an important link for communities of the Gulf region to the north, west, and east coast of northern Queensland. “The route is the only transport link for residents and indus-
try connecting to major arterial roads such as the Flinders and Barkly highways to the south,” Senator McDonald said. “By continuing to invest in this vital road, we are supporting northern Queensland communities by improving the reliability, productivity and resilience of supply chains and strengthening links to important markets.”

Help light up Herberton
LIGHTS: Herberton Royal Hotel manager Melaney Kilshaw is supporting the new lights campaign.
MEMBERS of the Herberton Business and Tourism Association have launched a fund-raising campaign to replace the old festoon lights in the Herberton CBD. The existing coloured lights have illuminated the town on festive occasions for several decades, but the time has come to replace the aging bulbs with brighter, more reliable LED lighting. Flyers detailing the new lights have been posted around town and collection boxes for donations are on the counters of the hardware store, hotels and the Jacaranda Café. You can get a sneak preview of what the new lighting will look like with a demonstration string set up in the beer garden
of the Royal Hotel. As part of the campaign, the Association is inviting all local businesses, individuals and community groups to sponsor a light for $12. The street will be adorned with a string of 240 lights and it is hoped to have them installed for the Herberton Twilight Markets on December 12. All sponsors will be publicly acknowledged at the market. Anyone wishing to donate should contact the Secretary, Max Enfield via email at max@boutiquepower.com.au or Treasurer Liz Atkins at the Herberton Mining Museum and Information Centre on 4096 2474.
Herberton Mining Museum and Visitor Information Centre celebrates win IN June this year the Herberton Mining Museum and Visitor Information Centre was announced as the recipient of the prestigious 2020 John Oxley Library Community History Award. Gifted by the Library Board of Queensland and the Queensland Library Foundation, the award recognises individuals and local community organisations for distinction and innovation in the documenting and sharing of Queensland’s history. Last week Councillor Annette Haydon, Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew and Mayor Rod Marti
joined the museum volunteers and TRC staff to celebrate their win after physically receiving the award. “It’s great to see the volunteers recognised for their Community Research Room and Collection Management Overhaul Project,” said Councillor Annette Haydon. “The group worked hard to create a community research area, and transform an overcrowded collection space into a collections operation centre and dedicated archives space. “They also took part in train-
ing to better understand collection policy and management.” Councillor Haydon said the volunteers are committed to the preservation of history in the area. “They are extremely worthy of this award,” she said. The Herberton Mining Museum houses a large archive of information and objects from Herberton and associated mining field. The museum’s research team fields enquiries from professional and amateur genealogists, universities and consulting firms both locally and worldwide.

The ceremony, which was held on Sunday, October 25, honoured the 19 North Queensland National Servicemen who were killed or died of sickness while completing their service obligation. Six of these are already recognised on a memorial at the Wacol Heritage Precinct which was unveiled by the Governor of Queensland last year on February 14, (National Service day). Survey to help secure future of local news
Community news matters and now local readers across our region are being urged to have their say on the future of country media in Australia NEWSPAPER readers across our distribution area are being urged to have their say on the future of country media in Australia’s biggest survey on local news. The survey, launched nationally this week, is part of the largest study of its kind in Australia, running for three years with almost $250,000 backing from the Australian Research Council, one of the Federal Government’s main competitive research funding agencies. Deakin University, RMIT University and Country Press Australia, the peak regional media organisation, of which this newspaper is a member, are leading the study. The project’s lead investigator, Deakin Associate Professor Kristy Hess, said the future of local newspapers depended on support from local audiences.
The survey aims to give people a voice on ways to improve the sustainability of their local paper. “If you read your local newspaper, then it’s absolutely vital you fill in this survey to show your support for local news. We are depending on you,” she said. “We want to hear your ideas and feedback on the role of country newspapers in these digital times. We want to know what the paper means to you and how it might improve into the future.” Project partner and Country Press Australia Executive Director, Bruce Morgan, said the project was as much about regional communities as it was about local media businesses. “Local media outside metropolitan Australia is very much the journal of record for the towns and regions it represents,”
he said. “It is not exaggerating to say that, should we lose local media representation, it will impact not just on the fabric of those communities, but the very principles of democracy. That is, the ability to record, champion, challenge and hold accountable. “That is why this highlycredible, well-funded research is vital to those communities and their future,” Mr Morgan said. The survey should take up to 10 minutes and will ask a range of questions that relate to your views on local newspapers. All participants have a chance to win one of 10 newrelease Apple iPads. The survey will run until the end of November – Visit www.localnewsinnovation. org to complete the survey.

Movie magic on the Majestic big screen
Experience three terrific movies
CATCH UP ONLINE
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au THERE'S even more magic at the Majestic Theatre this weekend, with the top thriller star Liam Neeson in the lead role in the action crime drama The Honest Thief, which will put a whole new perspective on the bad guys who become good guys, versus the good cops, who become bad cops. The Aussie movie RAMS, with a host of top Aussie actors, also continues and has drawn excellent response from those who have already seen it. It's a great Aussie yarn in the the tradition of The Last Cab To Darwin a few years ago. CATS & DOGS 3: PAWS UNITE is the third entrancing film in this series and will continue to provide colourful entertainment for all ages. THE HONEST THIEF: They call him the In-and-Out-
Bandit because meticulous thief Tom Carter (Liam Neeson) has stolen $9 million from small-town banks while managing to keep his identity a secret. But after he falls in love with the bubbly Annie (Kate Walsh), Tom decides to make a fresh start by coming clean about his criminal past, only to be double-crossed by two ruthless FBI agents. RAMS: In remote Western Australia, two estranged brothers, Colin (Sam Neill) and Les (Michael Caton), are at war. Raising separate flocks of sheep descended from their family's prized bloodline, the two men work side by side yet are worlds apart. When Les's prize ram is diagnosed with a rare and lethal illness, authorities order a purge of every sheep in the valley. While Colin attempts to stealthily outwit
the powers that be, Les opts for angry defiance. But can the warring brothers set aside their differences and have a chance to reunite their family, save their herd, and bring their community back together? CATS & DOGS 3: PAWS UNITE Gwen the Cat and Roger the Dog are secret agents who covertly protect and save the world without humans ever finding out. Their partnership is due to the Great Truce, which has stopped dog and cat hostility for a decade. But the long-standing peace is threatened when a supervillain parrot discovers a way to manipulate wireless frequencies that only dogs and cats can hear. Will the heroes be able to stop the foul fowl, or will he cause a cat-a-strophe between the species?

Water supply top of the agenda REGIONAL Development Australia Tropical North Inc (RDATN) held its Regional Water Summit in September at the Cairns Regional Council to identify and prioritise the region’s water supply priorities. Mayors, interested organisations and water experts from across Far North Queensland came together to identify urban,
industrial, agricultural and recreational water requirements. Guest speakers included, Dr Chris Chilcott from the CSIRO, Mr Joe Moro from FNQ Growers, Darlene Irvine from FNQROC and Professor Allan Dale from The Cairns Institute. gation Project, North Johnstone River Diversion Scheme, Nullinga Dam, FNQ Water Security Project, Tablelands Irrigation Project, Cairns Regional Council Water Security Strategy, New Chillagoe Bore and Alternate raw water intake at Drumsara Quarry site and untreated water storage reservoir The projects were ranked according to their regional benefit, purpose (agricultural, urban, industrial and environmental), timing and whether they had a proponent. RDATN Chair David Kempton said that as the Lakeland Irrigation Area Scheme was already significantly advanced, it was not included in the prioritisation of projects moving forward. “I was surprised by the results. It’s clear there is a very real and pressing need for the completion of a new water treatment facility for Cairns within the next five years or there simply won’t be enough water to expand either the urban population base or tourism visitation,” he said. “Naturally, this became our number one priority in terms of urgency for the region. “In the same way, the much smaller new Chillagoe Bore is
really vital to the urban population of the Chillagoe Region and was ranked third. “The Gilbert River Irrigation Precinct is a high priority project as it is relatively low cost and has the potential to significantly expand agriculture in the North, creating employment, regional growth and growing our economy.” Mr Kempton also noted that Nullinga Dam was seen as longterm prospect but did not find favour as a key project in the next decade as the dam did not solve FNQ’s immediate water supply problems. “Nullinga is one of the more expensive of those water infrastructure projects that had preliminary business case assessments,” he said. “We are learning that there is cost per megalitre beyond which agriculture cannot be sustained. “The message is clear, unless we present a unified, long term water strategy that is prioritised and fully integrated, we will fail on our endeavours to provide water to keep apace of our community and economic growth.” The RDATN also announced the date for their next summit. The second forum will be held in Mareeba on November 5

Mr Kempton said the second RDA Tropical North Regional Water Summit is an open forum for all FNQ growers, local interest groups, organisations and businesses. “There will be an opportunity for participants to discuss and debate the proposals and provide input into the strategy.”
“This prioritisation of water projects in the region is part of a longer-term strategy by RDATN to bring together regional groups and test projects and opinion based on fact in various industries and infrastructure groupings.” For more information about the Mareeba Water Summit contact info@rdatn.org.au or phone 4041 1729.

Strong interest pouring in for 2021 Field Days BUSINESSES from across the north are jumping at the chance to showcase their services and connect with tens of thousands of people at the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days. Site sales for Northern Australia’s largest agricultural Field Day are open and selling fast. The biennial event is a joint initiative between the Rotary Clubs of Atherton and Mareeba and will be held on May 26, 27 and 28, 2021 at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds. Rotary FNQ Field Days chairman Trevor Duncan said the event provided a prime opportunity for businesses to showcase and connect with their customers. “Anyone in Cairns that’s got customers on the Tablelands probably doesn’t realise the size and magnitude of the event,” he said. “There’s 22,000 people that come in the gates over the three days, there’s customers coming from all over and they’re all quality buyers. “One of the reasons we keep selling out and one of the reasons why we keep being successful is because the owners of the businesses come. “This event attracts a very high standard of buyers.”
The 2019 Rotary FNQ Field Days was a sellout success and 2021 is looking to be even bigger and better.
Mr Duncan said the committee was hard at work planning to ensure next year’s event met the expectations of site exhibitors, patrons and visitors. “Crowd favourites will be back at the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days, including the mighty tractor pull, emergency services mock rescues, health and wellbeing pavilion, family and kids
area, new release machinery and agriculture technology and innovation, and much more,” he said. A COVID-Safe plan is in place for the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days and the organising committee have put together a range of comprehensive guidelines. LETTERS to the EDITOR HAVE YOUR SAY
Thank you
I WANT to express thanks the The Express! The Express and the Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) ran a Meet the Candidates for Hill forum in Atherton. It was well attended, all but one of the many candidates turned up, keen to explain their positions and meet and greet. As well as policies, the public had the opportunity to assess the people behind the positions, a very important aspect of making decisions about voting. This is particularly true in rural areas, where many know at least some of the candidates personally, and where we often have options to work with our parliamentarians directly. This benefit is one of the few that we have over our metropolitan voters. This event, a major contribution to our democratic process locally, would never have happened without the involvement of The Express Newspaper. ATCC would like to thank The Express for the work put in to make the candidates’ forum happen.

And, of course, many of us are so grateful that a local and independent newspaper survived the ravages of the recent print media die-off, felt particularly strongly in rural areas like ours. Christine Doan ATCC
History lost
WE were amazed and very disturbed to see the old nurses residence at the Atherton Hospital demolished. This historical link with our Tableland past distroyed without any thought for our history. We are a very young nation and have very little history unlike Europe, so these links with the past are important to the community and have important memories for many people. Surely it could have been saved and made into something that would be of service to the people of Atherton. All I can say is “what a disgrace” who in their right minds let this happen, they should be ashamed. This kind of vandalism must stop or we shall have nothing left... it keeps happening and no one even gets a slap on the hand.
For goodness sake “wake up”, you may close your eyes and then find some other part of our Shire is no more. Grahame West, RAVENSHOE
Ignorance abounds
REFERRING to the North Johnstone River Water Transfer article (October 7th) I am again astounded that in this day and age such an archaic idea can be mooted. The jargon they are trying to sell has gone from only taking flood water to building weirs. From flood mitigation to ‘on rare occasions it could be used to stop flooding in Innisfail’. Again, in high rainfall conditions the Barron and the Johnstone will be rising at the same time. Innisfail does not flood from the headwaters of our river, but rather from the other rivers and creeks flowing into it through the catchment areas in the mountain ranges. With the North Johnstone already extremely over allocated, supplying the Malanda township including the dairy factory and two schools, hundreds of rural-residential properties, various farms, and

now more and more irrigation projects, it is critical that flows are closely monitored and reduced if possible. Try to conserve what water we have instead of using every last drop. Politicians and Governments have already destroyed almost all of our river systems, and still they learn nothing from past and existing examples. Our northern rivers should be pristine, enhanced, show-casing the fantastic environment we have that is continually being eroded. Many jobs could be created by revegetating, weeding, fencing out livestock along our water courses, with a far more sustainable long term result than any additional irrigation schemes would. TRC, every business and every single resident in the southern tablelands region rely on this river, and all of us should be strongly protesting about this ridiculous idea. When tourists are able to visit again, I’m sure they would prefer to see clear water with trees surrounding it rather than a few muddy puddles here and there. Michael Zapala MALANDA
THE WINNER OF THE TABLELANDS AND SURROUNDS PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP THIS WEEK IS GLENDA KIRK
Taken from the balcony of our Villa at Edge of the Bay Resort at Freycinet Peninsula on the north east coast on 1 September 2019. The Aurora was only visible for that one night while we were down in Tasmania for a two week holiday and I waited until about 1am for the clouds to clear. I thought it was almost all over when I took this shot but when I downloaded the pics, it was evident the show was just beginning so I’m guessing my eyesight was off – and perhaps I was cold and ready for bed. The camera captured far in terms of colour and illumination more than I could see with the naked eye. The aurora simply looked like as a faint strobing light above Enter your photos via the Tablelands and Surrounds Photography Group on the horizon - I couldn’t see any colour Facebook and possibly wouldn’t have noticed it unless I was waiting for it. No one knows precisely when an aurora will be visible or how bright it will be. It had been several months between shows when this one occurred and I’d never seen an aurora (let alone photographed one!) so I was very lucky indeed. Taken on Canon EOS 80D with a Sigma wide angle 10-20mm lens. f/3.5 20sec 10mm ISO3200.
OPINION With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1
Why I don’t care about the National Anthem IT seems like the Australian media have lost their minds over the decision by the NRL to not play the Australian National Anthem at the upcoming State of Origin game. A decision that was quickly reversed after Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison intervened. The intervention was confirmed in a statement from the Prime Minister’s office on Thursday “The NRL have done the right thing by listening to their fans and acting quickly to overturn their choice not to play the national anthem at the Origin Series.” Mr Morrison said The decision to scrap the anthem came after a series of protests by Latrell Mitchell, Josh AddoCarr, Cody Walker and Blake Ferguson in the 2019 series when they elected not to sing the anthem. Queensland stars Will Chambers, Dane Gagai and Josh Papalii also remained silent during the singing of Advance Australia Fair during the 2019 series. If you think that not playing the National Anthem is a bloody disgrace from the NRL then you haven’t been paying attention. Maybe you need to Google Greg Bird, Todd Carney, Julian O’Neil, Mitchell Pearce, Nate Myles and Matt Lodge just to name a few. Are we really going to get upset with the NRL about not playing a piece of music when their play-
ers go around doing damage to other people (not to mention their spouses) and then get off scot free and are later treated like heroes because they can kick/run/catch a ball? In a sordid and shameful 2018-2019 off-season for the code, five NRL players were charged over assaults against women, including alleged domestic violence attacks. If the NRL capitulated so easily against playing the national anthem, then why should we expect any positive action from the NRL when it comes to domestic violence. Since the Australian media want to call the NRL a national disgrace for their original decision not to play the National Anthem, here’s a few other things that should take the top spot of national disgraces, The Biloela-based Tamil family who are still detained on Christmas Island, the degradation of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, sports rorts and the selling of Australia’s water to overseas interests. The reason I don’t care about The National Anthem isn’t because I don’t love my country, but because a misogynistic and violent outfit like the NRL should never be allowed to play the Anthem in the first place. Their attitude against women and minority groups truly makes them an Australian disgrace.

Method 1. Boil a pot of water and cook the ramen noodle for 1 to 2 mins and drain the noodles under cold tap water - tip - to avoid the noodles sticking to each other add a teaspoon of oil and toss well. 2. In a bowl add the chicken pieces with salt, black pepper, cornstarch and soy sauce. Mix well to marinate the chicken. Chop and keep aside the veggies required or you want to use in the recipe. 3. Next in a mixing bowl add the ingredients for the sauce and mix well. 5. Add the stir fry sauce mix to the wok/pan and mix well. 6. April 21 to May 21
You may want to stay in the background this week. You can make gains if you look at long-term investments. You will have a problem with your boss if you haven’t done your job.
Gemini
May 22 to June 21
You’re apt to make a move or experience changes at home. Don’t agree to make any of those cosmetic alterations you’ve been considering. Get down to business and do the work yourself.
Cancer
Virgo
Expect some flak. Your high energy and discipline will enable you to complete any seemingly insurmountable tasks. Do not sign your life away. You’re in the mood to spend money.
Your boss may be on the rampage and you certainly don’t want to be the one to take the brunt of a bad situation. You may have been too agreeable to someone who just wanted to use you.
Don’t allow colleagues to put unreasonable pressure on you. You can make new friends who could turn into intimate connections if you join clubs or take creative courses.

Taurus
Libra Sept 24 to Oct 23
Oct 24 to Nov 22 Take time to catch up on overdue correspondence. Partnerships with creative people could lead to financial gains. Be careful not to push your luck when dealing on either a personal or professional level.
You need to pamper yourself for a change. You are best to work at home, clearing up overdue projects. You may be offered opportunities that will result in a higher earning potential.
Capricorn
Dec 22 to Jan 20
You could lose a good friend because of it. Family trips or projects should be on your mind. Minor health problems will flare up if you don’t take care of yourself. Help children complete projects they’re having difficulty with.
Aquarius
Jan 21 to Feb 19 Your home environment may be hectic, which could result in emotional upset if you aren’t well organized. Think of starting a new business or emotional partnership. Put your efforts into moneymaking ventures.
Leo
July 23 to Aug 22
Nov 23 to Dec 21
Think about your priorities. Insurance pay outs, tax rebates, or just plain luck. Go directly to the source if you want to know exactly what’s been going on. Be creative in your efforts.
Pisces
Feb 20 to March 20
Self-deception about relation ships is a problem. Get busy on those home improvement projects that you’ve been procrastinating about. Lighten up your serious attitude.

Gear acknowledged for volunteer work Mareeba Junior Rugby League Treasurer Stephen Gear was named a National Rugby League Volunteer of The Year finalist at their recent Community Heroes awards in October.
CHAMPIONS: Chris Ellison and Lisa Bertoldo were crowned Mareeba Tennis Club Champions at the Mazda Mitsubishi Tennis Tournament last month.
MAREEBA Junior Rugby League (MJRL) Treasurer Stephen Gear was a Volunteer of the Year finalist in the recent National Rugby League (NRL) Community Awards. The 2020 NRL Community Awards were held in mid-October and seek to honour the very best people in rugby league. The unsung heroes, who give up their own time to grow the game, assist in the community and create assistance for communities in need.
Stephen has been involved in MJRL for five years initially as a coach for his son’s U7 team and most recently as treasurer, and was unfortunately unsuccessful in winning the Volunteer of The Year award. Stephen was incredibly humbled and honoured when he discovered he was nominated for the award. “I was very honoured to hear about my nomination at our club breakup where I was presented with some gifts for my nomina-
tion,” he said. “I just do my job, I am the treasurer and I just help out where I can. “It’s really not me it’s everyone in the club that gets behind and supports each other, I know that if something does go wrong someone else will jump in and help out.” MJRL President Shaun Fincham spoke glowingly about Stephen’s impacts on the success of the club. “It’s just Stephens’s char-
acter to do things because they need to be done not because he wants recognition,” he said. “That’s one of the qualities that make him a very valuable committee member, if something needs doing he just does it he doesn’t do it for acknowledgement. “What he does for this club is huge I don’t think he really realises what it is, he does a lot for this club and because of his involvement he has made this club better.”
Slamming success THE Mareeba Tennis Club held their Mazda Mitsubishi Tennis Tournament in October which saw a new doubles events being added to their regular schedule. The tournament took place from October 16 to 18 and saw players from all ages in the club coming to participate and vying to come out as winners. The new doubles event was played on Friday night with player’s ages being added to-
gether to fit into an 80 or 100 years plus category. This resulted in a mixed bag of players with varying ages and skill levels which all added up to some fun and interesting games. Saturday saw the A and B Grade doubles being played while Sunday saw Chris Ellison and Lisa Bertoldo were crowned club champions after their singles games.

Gladiators gear up for 2021 season
CUP DAY READY: President of Mareeba Turf Club Alex Malliff and Cairns Cup winner Paniagua with Neil Setford, President of Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation were looking forward to the 2020 Melbourne Cup and hoping that Verry Elleegant comes home a winner.
Mareeba draws barrier 15 in Melbourne Cup Tour sweep AFTER the running of this year’s Melbourne cup, The Mareeba Hospital foundation could be $50,000 better off. In September of this year, the Mareeba Turf Club held a virtual visit from the actual Melbourne Cup, as part of the nationwide Melbourne Cup Tour Town Sweep. When applying to have the Melbourne Cup come to Mareeba, The Mareeba Turf Club had to nominate a charity which would benefit from the $50,000 prize being offered by the Victoria Racing Club. The Friends of The Mareeba Hospital Foundation was the local charity nominated and Secretary and Treasurer of the Mareeba Turf club Rhonda Stevens said that each year the Melbourne Cup does a tour of country race clubs. “For the last couple of years the Victorian racing club has organised for the Melbourne cup to go on a tour around Australia, and because there are 24 barri-
ers they visit 24 regional race clubs,” she said. “You have to apply and explain why the Melbourne cup should come to your town and we were lucky enough that we nominated as one of the 24 but due to COVID we had have a virtual tour.” The Victorian turf club allocates one barrier to each of the 24 country race clubs and if that barriers horse wins the Melbourne cup the nominated charity wins $50,000 “We picked The Friends of The Mareeba Hospital Foundation were because we believed it would benefit the whole community,” Ms Stevens said. Last week the Victorian turf club announced that the Mareeba Turf club had secured barrier 15. On Saturday’s 2021 barrier draw Verry Elleegant was picked to start from barrier 15. The five year old mare from New Zealand won the 2020 Caulfield Cup in October and
has won more than $6.8 million dollars in prize money and is one the early favourites to win this year’s Melbourne Cup. If Verry Elleegant wins, the Friends of the Mareeba Hospital Foundation will be awarded $50,000 from the Victoria Racing Club. Neil Setford, President of Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation, said the money would go to expanding gynaecological services at the Mareeba Hospital. “If there are women in Dimbulah or Chillagoe and they need gynaecological services with this money they wouldn’t need to go all the way to Cairns, they could instead go to the Mareeba Hospital,” he said. “The money is desperately needed by the hospital and we can’t wait to see if Verry Elleegant will not only win the cup but also help us here in Mareeba.”
Win a bike valued at $13,550 EXTREME Motorcycles and Ravenshoe Motorcycle Club have joined forces to raffle off a Husqvarna Motocross bike of your choice, valued up to $13,550. All proceeds will go to the Ravenshoe Motorcycle Club

to be sold at $50 a ticket – the bike is valued at $13,550. Tickets can be purchased from Extreme Motorcycles or contact Shari Coker via the Ravenshoe Motorcycle Club Facebook page or at the track.
2021 READY: The Mareeba Gladiators have done some early signings and are looking forward to their 2021 season after a canned 2020 season. Pictured is Trent Barnard and Clint Posselt.
THE Mareeba Gladiators are looking ahead to the 2021 season with some new signings to bolster their ranks and improve on their core foundation. The 2020 season was cut off before it even started with the touchdown of COVID. The Gladiators were only able to get a trial game in against town rivals, the Atherton Roosters which resulted in a draw. Now with Australia returning to normal, the fight is on for the 2021 Cairns District Rugby League Premiership. Returning Gladiators Captain/Coach Trent Barnard is excited to be get back onto the
field in 2021. “We are looking good this season, we recruited well and a bunch of boys are coming back,” he said. “A few others are jumping on board and it’s going to make our squad a lot stronger. “We are hoping to get people through the gates and play some good footy.” The Gladiators will keep a strong core as many players will be returning with some added extras including Clint Posselt who has returned to his old stomping ground. “I touched down in Cairns in May and was itching to play, I
heard Trent was coaching and that they had a good core of players back,” Clint said. “Trent did a great job getting everyone back and keen so it was unfortunate that COVID came, but it’s good we have that base already. “I’m really excited with the players we have and the coach, so I think we can do pretty good things next year.” The 2021 pre-season will kick off in January with training and other trial matches to give the Gladiators a chance to sharpen their swords before heading into the 2021 season.

Hill too good for Bulls AFTER an unpredictable season the Mareeba Bulls men’s premier division team found themselves playing in the seasons show piece, the grand final on Saturday night, October 31. Reaching the grand final was an achievement in itself with the majority of the team never having played in such a pressure cooker situation at the highest local level. The young Bulls should take the heavy loss in their stride and with guidance should make them stronger in character and use the experience of such a loss to strive to become better players. With all that said and done you can take nothing away from Edge Hill United who won the grand final 7-0 against the Bulls. All of the Hill lads have never been in a team who have never dropped any points all season with a 100% record, only conceding five goals, three of which were penalties, scoring 16 goals in the finals and with none scored against them. They are an exceptional squad and should easily ac-
count for their counterparts from Townsville in the Crad Evans finals this weekend capping off a record breaking season. After the match Edge Hill captain Josh De Nittis was over the moon with the 2020 season and grand final win. “The boys turned up again and when you do that the results happen, this happens once in a lifetime we will savour the moment and have a few drinks tonight,” he said. “We may struggle to keep some of these players together for next year with the younger players possibly trying their luck in a higher league but we have great depth and we should be competitive again.” A subdued Bulls captain Ben Stabile said, “It was a big lesson for us and the younger boys to not give up and work right till the end, we had a good 10-15 minutes at the start of the game but didn’t put our chances away and once they scored the first goal our boys put their heads down and we had to chase the game and in the end we ran out of steam,” he said. “It’s a huge learning curve for them and us as a team, it
should make us hungrier for next time but credit to Edge Hill they played an exceptional game.” Bulls Coach, Ang Tatti while disappointed with the score heaped praise on his players for simply making the final. “We knew it was a huge ask, we played well for the first period but you have to play for the full 90 minutes, against teams like this you can’t switch off , you need to keep up the intensity , be on your game, keep moving constantly,” he said. “The moment you lapse you go into the dressing room four nil down and it’s difficult to pick yourself up from that situation. “Edge Hill was much faster, got to the ball quicker, were better off the second ball and had better movement. “They’re an exceptional side, that’s why they haven’t lost all season, our young boys can use this as a lesson in how it should be done – they’re young and will have other opportunities to play in finals.” When asked if he will coach the Bulls again next year Tatti said he would love to if given
the chance. “If they give me the job I would love to, I really enjoy coaching these boys and I know we will be better for the experience next year,” he said. In other matches featuring the Bulls, the men’s premiership winning Premier Reserves didn’t turn up when it mattered, losing their grand final 2-1 against the Stratford Dolphins. One can’t help but feel there was complacency within the squad having beaten the Dolphins 5-0 on two previous occasions. The Bulls did have their chances and missed not one but two penalties and were always playing catch-up to a Stratford side that did their homework on the Bulls. Dennis Allen’s side will have to pick themselves up from the loss if they are to take home the Crad Evans Shield in Townsville this weekend. The men’s Second Division had a torrid time on Friday Night in their match against Marlin Coast Rangers the team didn’t play to expectations and were well defeated 4-1 in the grand final.

Atherton’s winning streak kept alive
Atherton batsman Caleb Constant.
ATHERTON'S rep players continued their good form to feature in a resounding defeat of Barron River in Saturday’s Cricket Far North 40 over match at Atherton’s Loder Park. Electing to bat first, Atherton got off to a steady start against a consistent Barron bowling attack, and were restricted to 4-77 at the halfway mark. Barron rued some missed chances in the field and were made to pay as Paul Nasser put the foot down after drinks to bring up his 50 off 43 balls. Will Nasser put on a quick 30 off 33 in a handy partnership with his cousin. Tom Boorman 60* off 67 and Dan Parnell 35* off 35 looked comfortable, batting out the innings to bring up a competitive 5-202. Atherton's bowling attack was bolstered by the return of paceman Seppe Barletta, bowling in great form to start proceedings with a wicket maiden. Dan Parnell took a sharp catch off his own bowling in his opening spell, putting Barron on the
backfoot. Paul Nasser produced his trademark quality line and length bowling to grab 1-11 of his spell. Mitch Steele snared three wickets in his first over and Hadyn Steele rewarded the Captain with the final wicket in his cameo to claim the match in the 21st over. Caleb Constant kept busy behind the stumps taking three catches as Barron, who were missing a batsman due to injury and were dismissed for 76 runs. Atherton's Cricket Far North representatives Dan Parnell, Tom Boorman, Paul Nasser, Chris Adams, Mason Blaney and Logan Poggioli travel to Mackay this weekend where they take on Mackay and Central Queensland in open and U21 matches. Next local match is Atherton v Norths at Griffiths Park on November 14. Result: Atherton 5-202 (T Boorman 60*, P Nasser 53, D Parnell 35*) Def. Weekend of losses for Mareeba
Mareeba Bulls Under 12 champions.
The Bulls winning Under 13/14 side.
THE only shining lights for the Mareeba Bulls was the success of the junior teams coming home Champions for
assured with the under 12’s winning 1-0 in extra time against Stratford United, the goal coming from Jesse
2020 in the under 12 and under 13/14 divisions. The future of the Mareeba United Football Club seems
Layton-Bool and the under 13/14’s won 2-1 against the Southside Comets with Sam Broad scoring both goals.
MAREEBA Cricket had an unfortunate weekend with both their second and third grade teams going down. Thirds had a tough time in Port Douglas against the Muddies with the home side posting a good score of 4/164 off their 35 overs. Mareeba had little hope with them being dismissed for a dismal 86 runs in the 27th over with Captain Ray Watkins making nearly half his sides score with his 32. Seconds didn’t fare any better as they fell to United at Borzi
Park on Sunday in a close nail biting match. A massive batting order collapse thrust Mareeba into an unsavoury position with number eight Rhys Thomas coming in to steady the sinking ship making 35 off 70 balls top scoring and bringing Mareeba to a total of 117. The bowling attack quickly went to work with some tight lines and lengths and a fierce competition was had, however united were able to chase down the total in the 39th over leaving Mareeba out to dry.
