End of an era for Mareeba Lionesses

BY RHYS THOMAS AFTER many months of trying to get the decision reversed the Lioness Club of Mareeba has given up and will disband their club before the end of the year.

The decision to disband all Lioness clubs internationally and include them under the body of Lions was made last year much to the dismay of many Lioness and Lions clubs.

After months of appealing the decision it was obvious that it was not going to get overturned, so many of the Lioness clubs are currently in talks with their local Lions clubs as to what comes next.

This includes both the Lions and Lioness clubs of Mareeba where Lioness President Lyn Dyer and her Lionesses had a meeting last Wednesday to discuss what they wanted to do.

As per the decision made by Lions international as of June 30 2021, the Lioness clubs around the world will cease to exist, Lionesses will then either have to become Lions or operate as auxiliary volunteers.

Currently Lioness Clubs are free and require no membership costs while Lions Clubs require a regular membership fee.

Many of the Mareeba Lionesses have expressed their dissatisfaction with the idea of paying to become a volunteer, with many of them opting to just become auxiliary volunteers.

Mareeba Lioness Club President Lyn Dyer is not happy with the decision made but will still support her local Mareeba Lions Club.

“The decision means that we won’t have a Lioness Club in Mareeba anymore,” she said.

“There are some members of the Lioness Club that are happy to be volunteers for the Lions Club but don’t want to be members.

“We’ve had a lot of support from the Mareeba Community so we would like to thank them for all their support over the years.”

Over their 40 years of community service the Mareeba Lioness Club has hosted a number of fundraisers and events that are cherished and looked forward too by the community.

The Mareeba Lioness Club has hosted events like the Pink Ribbon day for over 13 years and other smaller events like

morning tea at bingo ever since they were founded.

They would often use the funds raised from these events and donate them to charities like the Cancer Council or even little Nate Moule from Mareeba.

Mareeba Lions Club President Gary Searle is happy to welcome the Lioness into the Lions club as members and as volunteers.

“We’ve got a bunch of awesome ladies who do stuff in the community and they will continue to do so even if they are not called Lionesses,” he said.

“There will obviously be some effect on the activities that we’ve come to know and love that the Lionesses do, some of those things may continue under the banner of the Lions Club.

“It’s certainly a bit of a disappointment for all of the Lions and Lionesses that they cannot continue with the Lioness brand.”

Officer Rob Oerlemans says the decision was made as a way to consolidate the organisation and ensuring that women have a full role in their clubs, districts and internationally.

“Lions since 1987 have included men and women they can participate at any level and they can be elected to every office in the organisation,” he said.

“The Lionesses started as a project of the Lions and the decision has been over many years that we want to ensure women play the fullest role in the organisation.

“In the Australian organisation we have been working with the Lionesses to assist them with their transition including payment of dues.”

The Mareeba Lioness Club has until June 30, 2021 to disband their club and they will not be allowed to operate under the Lioness banner beyond this date.

House fire leaves family homeless

BY PHIL BRANDEL A MUM and three children have been left homeless after a house

fire in Atherton destroyed the historic building that they had been renting.

Just before 9am on Sunday,

August 9 the house fire broke out on the corner of May Street and Gibson Street in Atherton.

Queensland Fire and Emer-

gency Services, The Queensland Ambulance and Atherton Police all attended.

The historic house was completely destroyed and will now have to be demolished. In previous incarnations the house had been an Ambulance station, a hostel and a boarding house.

Most recently the house had been converted into flats.

Damien Jenson’s father, John, was the owner of the building and said that his dad had owned it for nearly 40 years.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation that has affected my father and he is devastated,” Damien said.

“The financial impact is huge, but the emotional impact is worrying as well.

“For a 76 year old to lose something he has worked for his whole life really takes an emotional toll.”

It’s believed that Damien’s father also lost a lot of personal belongings that were stored in the building.

The cruel twist to the story is that the house had been on the market for some years and a buyer had been found, but they

were yet to exchange contracts before the fire.

One of the residents who was living in the house was Lani Deacon. Lani was just waking up with her three children when she noticed her flat filling up with smoke.

Lani has two boys and a girl under the age of eight and they escaped from the fire with just the clothes that they were wearing.

“On Sunday morning I woke up and saw flames, my first instinct was to find my children.

I grabbed the kids and ran out the back door. We ran down the stairs and watched as the building burnt down,” Lani said.

“It was only a matter of minutes by the time we got out the house; it was well and truly on fire.

“We lost everything as my main priority was getting children out.”

Lani had lived there a little over a year and said that her future was uncertain.

“The Salvation Army have put us up for a couple of nights, after that I’m not sure what we are doing,” she said.

“I’m now looking for a new

home for my kids, some toys and school uniforms, as the kids lost everything.“ Lani admits that there had been squatters living in the property, but believes that they had moved out a while ago.

A police spokesperson said the fire is being treated as suspicious.

“At this stage, investigations are still ongoing but to date significant investigations have been carried out in relation to the cause of the fire. It has been determined that it started in the upstairs level of apartments at about 8.55am,” said the spokesperson.

The police spokesperson also said that the house “was of high interest to local police” as the house had been visited multiple times over the past few months.

On Wednesday, August 12 police were called to the site after multiple non-residents started combing through the ashes.

A local locksmith is also being investigated after he picked the lock on the security gates that currently surround the site.

Investigations are continuing.

Momentum builds for new Mareeba health care service

THE Mareeba community is one step closer to a communityowned health care centre after hearing from the head of a Queensland Healthcare Service.

Paul Bell, chair of the Central Highlands Healthcare, visited Mareeba to speak with the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and other community stakeholders about the model used in emerald.

The visit comes as work continues on developing a sustainable model of comprehensive pri-

mary healthcare for the Mareeba community and surrounds.

With funding secured through the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) the project is being driven by the Mareeba Health Care Action Group under the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce.

The project is in response to an initiative by the NQPHN to identify opportunities to deliver sustainable improvement in health outcomes for the Ma-

BIBLIOPHILES from across the Far North will converge on Yungaburra this weekend for the annual book fair.

The Yungaburra Book Fair was started 12 years ago and has now expanded to include local booksellers, collectors and authors selling their books at the Yungaburra community hall.

Organiser of the Bookfair, Chris Tsilemanis, said last year was their biggest year.

“This year we already have about 20 sellers and as it’s on the same day as the markets, so we are hoping that this year will be just as big,” Chris said.

Some of the local authors who will be selling on the day include Viviana Verheesen from Kuranda, Robert Taylor from Tolga and Robert Reid from

Mareeba.

Mr Reid has published over nine nonfiction books. His last book ‘Murder on the river of gold’ is about the disappearance of Queensland prospector Bruce Schuler near the Palmer River in July 2012.

Mr Reid said he has attended the book fair for the past 10 years.

“It’s undercover, it’s on the same day as the markets and it’s a great day for authors and writers in general,” he said.

“Book fans know that there will be a huge selection of fiction and nonfiction books to choose from.

“It’s well worth it for local authors trying to get their name out there, you’ve got an audience ready and interested arriv-

ing on the day.”

Another local author who will be at the book fair is Janette Murray-Wakelin, who is the author of two books; ‘Raw Can Cure Cancer’ based on her own personal journey with cancer, and ‘Running Out of Time Running Raw Around Australia’ based on a World Record Run of 366 consecutive marathons around Australia achieved by Janette and her husband Alan while in their 60s.

There will also be six booksellers selling everything from second hand books to collectables on the day.

The Yungaburra Book fair is on this Saturday, August 22 from 9am to 4pm, at the Yungaburra Community Hall. Entry is free.

LNP announces Nipper for Cook Edward “Nipper” Brown is the new LNP candidate for the Cook electorate.

With the Queensland State Election less than three months away, the LNP has announced that its candidate for Cook will be former Mareeba Shire Councillor Edward “Nipper” Brown.

Nipper is a long term resident of the shire and narrowly lost to Angela Toppin for the position of Mayor at the May 2020 council elections.

Nipper confirmed that he had been selected as the LNP candidate. “I am proud to have been selected as the LNP candidate for the seat of cook for the upcoming state election,” he said.

Nipper said his first point of business would be moving the electorate office back to Mareeba.

“Voting for me as the member for Cook is the best way of getting the office moved back into Mareeba,” Mr Brown said.

“It doesn’t make sense that you have to drive through Mareeba to get to the members office in Cairns.

“I hope people will get behind me as I will be the best voice for the people of Cook.”

Nipper said that Labor had failed the Far North on jobs, crime and health.

“Unemployment is rising fast in this electorate, but Labor has no plan for our economic recovery,” he said.

“The LNP’s plan will stimulate the economy, create a decade of secure jobs and drag Queens-

land out of recession.”

Mr Brown said the LNP would launch a crackdown on youth crime with tougher laws, 24/7 monitoring of offenders on bail and mandatory jail terms for third convictions.

“Crime in Far North Queensland has exploded since Labor was elected in 2015, with robbery increasing by 103% and car theft increasing by 76%,” he said.

“An LNP Government will bring back consequences for crime.

“We also want to see more early intervention with a ‘justice reinvestment’ trial to break the cycle of offending and reduce the over-representation of Indig-

enous offenders in youth detention centres.”

Nipper also claims that the waiting list for surgery at Cairns Hospital increasing by 146% since 2015.

“The massive increase in the surgery waiting list is unacceptable and shows Labor cannot be trusted with our health services,” Mr Brown said.

“An LNP Government will partner with the private sector to slash surgery waiting lists and ensure patients are seen within clinically recommended times.

“There is no point having empty beds in private hospitals when people are waiting for surgery.”

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said she welcomed the selection of Nipper as her party’s candidate for the state seat of Cook.

“Only the LNP has a plan to create more jobs in Cook and drag us out of recession,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Around 8400 people are unemployed across Far North Queensland, but Labor has no plan for our recovery. Labor hasn’t even got a Budget.

“Only Nipper Brown and the LNP have a plan to get Cook working again. “The LNP economic plan includes investing in the Nullinga Dam, cutting redtape and a no-new-tax guarantee to encourage firms to invest.”

The Mareeba Historical Society reopened its doors at the recent Mareeba Markets after many months of being closed.

The doors to the history of Mareeba and its surrounds have been closed since March when the country went into lockdown.

The Mareeba Historical Society contains the combined history of Mareeba and the surrounding area and towns all the way back until pioneering times.

After closing their doors the society has suffered a massive hit to their volunteer base as nearly 70% of their volunteers have been unable to return.

Mareeba Historical Society Secretary Helen Kindt was very excited to be open again and saw many people coming through their doors.

“We had a lot of people coming through the door which was good to see, we had about 40

people over the day,” she said.

“We also had some good sales from our second hand book store.

“We had everyone who came in social distance and kept their records in a book at the door.”

The Mareeba Historical Society is located within the Mareeba Centenary Park and is open every Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 till 3 and 9 till 3 respectively.

A NEW group of young business owners has been formed with the goal of advocating for more facilities for young families in the Mareeba Shire.

Mareeba Shire Councillor (MSC) Locky Bensted has formed ‘The Young Business Leaders Group of Mareeba.’

“During my campaign for council I found that there were no other young people running,” said Mr Bensted.

“I always thought that we need to have a facility for younger people who are in business to get their voices

heard. The younger generation is the next group of leaders for Mareeba.”

The group is hoping to identify potential developments with a focus on parks, dining and recreation, to attract and retain young families in the Mareeba Shire.

“Our group recognises the fact that for us to keep young families in town, then the township needs to offer safe and appealing facilities for young families,” said Mr Bensted.

Mr Bensted said that once

they have identified the opportunities, he can then take the ideas straight to council and he is also hoping that the group will be able to lobby state members for funding.

One of the ideas that the group has identified is the Lakes area in Mareeba. The group wants to expand the area to include a soft play water park, bike and walking trials, and a café and BBQ area.

“Rather than people going down to Cairns, we would like people from Cairns to come up here and have a BBQ with their

friends around the lakes,” Mr Bensted said.

“We also think the lakes should be rebranded and have a name. We are hoping that a new name and facility will get rid of the old baggage that is associated with the lakes.”

In the group are tourism operators, a jeweller, a car dealer, dentists and several retailers and they are hoping to recruit more members.

Heidi was born in Herberton, raised in Ravenshoe and was living in Mareeba when she started her business 10 years ago while working at the Mareeba Sugar Mill.

“One of the guys suggested I do all the testing and tagging

at the mill, because all the guys hated doing it. So I got my qualifications from TAFE and it took off from there.” Heidi said.

Starting in 2010 Heidi built her business from the ground up and Norsafe now employs up to 8 people, doing testing and tagging, RCD testing, thermal imaging and appliance repairs.

“I have a passion for workplace safety and making sure everyone goes home every night, which is mainly due to the death of my 5 year old step brother on the farm when we were children,” she said.

“Test and tag is an opportunity for me to do my bit to prevent workplace deaths and injuries.

“My team is mostly women; we have our own challenges being mothers or partners. I’m so proud of my team; we all lift

each other up and pitch in to get the job done for our customers.”

Heidi admits that starting a business in a male dominated industry had its challenges.

“When I started my business 10 years ago the industry didn’t have a great reputation, however my biggest supporters have been local electricians,” she said.

“We are providing a very important but niche business.”

Heidi said there are benefits to balancing business and motherhood. “Being my own boss has allowed me to have choices and control over my day. I love that my hard work has allowed our family to enjoy many things that would typically be out of reach. My team and I have proven that no matter your age or gender, you can achieve amazing things,” she said.

While starting your own business can be challenging Heidi has advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise.

“Just go for it! Pick something you love, something that you’d do gladly for free. Don’t pick something just for the money, because in no time you’ll resent it. Jump in and have a go and wing it along the way,” she said.

“I'm so proud that I'm able to provide several families each week with an income and lifestyle job, and I had zero background in this field.

“Owning and running your own business is one of the most challenging yet most rewarding things you can do, but remember, nothing worthwhile is easy.”

Locals commemorate 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific

TO commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, veterans and families of the fallen came together to remember.

This year the Tablelands regional council (TRC) held a special ceremony at the Rocky Creek War Memorial which is the site of what was sprawling army base and military hospital during the war.

Mayor Rod Marti said “This year is the 75th anniversary of victory in the Pacific and we are dedicating six individual and two-unit plaques during the ceremony.”

“The unit plaques recognise Reserved Occupations and the Australian Women’s Land

Army.

“We’ll also be unveiling a new memorial sculpture by Amanda Feher that represents the facilities, actions and people from the Rocky Creek site.”

The six new memorial plaques were added for service men who has passed.

Guest speakers at the event included WWII veteran Jack Duffy 93, who served in the merchant navy, and Millaa Millaa resident Margaret Plant, who shared information about the Rocky Creek nurses and female staff.

More than 200 people were in attendance and the United Tablelands Pipeband played a brand-new song at the cer-

emony.

by Pipe Bands Australia and written by Melbourne composer Mark Saul for the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two. Mick Ruppin from the United Tablelands Pipeband said drummers and pipe bands had a long tradition of supporting commemorative occasions.

THE second annual Tablelands Better Beef Open Day was held on Sunday, August 16.

11 studs from across the region opened their gates with hundreds of elite cattle on display.

Open Day president Nick Trompf said the day was a great success.

“All the studs have been busy from the very start, the buyers started arriving half an hour before the gates were due to open,” said Mr Trompf.

“Throughout the day we had people from Beaudesert, Rockhampton and we sold five bulls thus far, so it’s been a very good result.

“The sun was shining for a start, people were more aware of the event and there were more people around.

“The event was more widely promoted this year with the excellent booklet in the Express Newspaper and social media.

“By 11am today we have more people through than we had all day last year. I’m sure all the other breeders have had a successful day just like we have.”

A pathway into the working world

SCHOOL BASED WORK: Students of St Stephen’s Catholic College currently undergoing a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation with the Australasian Drilling Institute.

SCHOOL based apprenticeships/traineeships are commonplace on the campuses around the Tablelands and allow their students a pathway into the working world.

Schools like Mareeba State High School, Malanda State High School, Atherton State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College all have programs that allow their students to begin trades and do certificates while still in school.

These trades can range from jobs like carpentry to hairdressing and the certificates can include retail to sport and recreation.

While working as a schoolbased apprentice or trainee students are given set days that they must go off school grounds and work through a local business.

The positions are usually offered to students at the start of grade 10 or 12 and will continue until they graduate with some students close to finishing their trade.

St Stephen’s Catholic College VET Coordinator Paul MacCallum said that when students engage in these programs it prepares them for the future.

“Students have the opportunity to develop and strengthen valuable skills and real-life work experience including working with people, meeting deadlines and working under pressure,” he said.

“Arrangements such as these are a way for students to give back to the community while advancing their own careers.

“In most cases, employers see the benefits of having keen and enthusiastic trainees and apprentices and are able to keep them on for the completion of their training and often for many

years after.”

Mareeba State High School currently has 14 students undertaking school based apprenticeships/traineeships including Electro technology, Civil Construction, Engineering/Boiler Maker, Plumbing, Hospitality, Business, Retail and Hairdressing.

Malanda State High School has eight students currently doing schoolbased apprenticeships/traineeships including Business, Horticulture, Engineering, Cabinetry, Glass and Glazing, Carpentry and Aboriculture.

St Stephen’s Catholic College has 26 students training for positions including Butchery, Horticulture, Hospitality, Engineering, Automotive and Health.

Atherton State High School has a whopping 55 students currently undergoing training as a school based apprentice/trainee the areas include Carpentry, Diesel Fitter, Electrical, Hairdressing, Fitter and Turner, Mechanic, Plumber, Tiler, Butcher, Blocklayer, Retail, Business, Hospitality, Sport and Recreation, Kitchen Operations and Business Admin.

Industry and Vocational Training Officer for Atherton State High School Kylie Coleman has stated that because of the schools rapport with local businesses and their flexibility a much larger number of students are able to do school based apprenticeships/traineeships.

The school currently leads Queensland with the number of students doing these apprenticeships/traineeships with their largest number in a calendar year being 86 students.

remainder of their QCE points needed to graduate or a possible career.

Geoffrey Dean, a Mareeba State High School alumni, is currently training students at St Stephen’s Catholic College in a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation, a course which he undertook in high school which consequently landed him a job.

Currently working as a Trainee Driller for the Australasian Drilling Institute (ADI), Mr Dean was offered the job directly by Ili Cava, the owner of ADI shortly after completing his cert.

When asked about why he thought he got offered a job so quickly, Mr Dean attributed it to his work ethic whilst during the cert and his “correct personality”.

“Since I have been working with ADI for the past 3 years I’ve learnt that to do the job I’m doing it takes a certain type of person with the correct personality,” he said.

“Ili must have seen back in 2017 when I did the course and decided back then that I was the right man for the job, to be truthful I had absolutely no idea I was going to get a job offer.

“The benefits of doing the course were quite simple at the time, the four QCE points you receive for finishing it however after doing it I realised there was more.”

Mr Dean recently finished a Certificate II in Drilling Operations and is currently underway in Certificate III in Drilling Operations, which afterwards he will be doing a Certificate III/IV in Training and Assessing, all done through ADI.

NEW FIREFIGHTER: Ravenshoe’s newest firefighter is Elisabetta Gianasi.

WHEN Elisabetta Gianasi moved to Australia from Italy in 2004 one of the first things she did was sign up as a volunteer for her local rural fire brigade.

Elisabetta has been a volunteer for the rural fire brigade at Millstream for the past 12 years and has now taken the next step in her fire education, by becoming an Auxiliary Fire Fighter at QFES in Ravenshoe after completing her Auxiliary Recruit Training and Education Program (ARTEP) in Cairns last month.

Some of the duties that Auxiliary Firefighters get involved with includes ambulance assistance, road crashes, burn offs and back up to the full time firefighters.

Elisabetta said that she started volunteering as a way to give

back to her community.

“I wanted to help the local community, so I volunteered for the rural brigade,” she said.

“Our community is quite small and we all need to help.”

She said that joining the Auxiliary brigade was the next step.

“The next step of training is much harder, we learn how to enter a burning building, how to use breathing apparatus and specific training in car fires and car accidents,” Elisabetta said.

“This is the next level up from grass fires, Ravenshoe is a small brigade but we cover quite a large area, so the extra training is vital.”

Elisabeeta also graduated with several other new Auxiliary fire fighters including Landis Carlow at who joins Millaa Millaa and Dean Gatto in Mareeba.

COOKING UP A STORM: Mutchilba State School students are excited to be cooking their own produce on the new bench donated

by DB Engineering.

THANKS to generosity of Denis Beghin at DB Engineering in Dimbulah, the students at the Mutchilba State School now have a new stainless steel bench they can use for cooking.

The school has a community garden which is used every Friday for their cooking classes, but what the school didn’t have was a hygienic table at the children’s height.

Denis donated his time and the stainless steel materials to refurbish an old desk to make it into a hygienic cooking table.

Teacher Bianca Parise said it was a fantastic donation from a local business.

“Originally the students wrote him a letter telling him that they loved to cook but didn’t have a hygienic surface to cook from,” she said.

“The students asked in their letter was he able to help them remake the table and that they

would pay him with the jams and the chutneys that they make.

“He said he would do it as a donation for the school.”

Bianca said Denis turned the table around for the school in just a few hours.

“We dropped it in on Friday and it was picked up on Saturday and it has already been put to good use,” said Bianca.

Every Friday the school harvests from their veg patch and the students cook quiche, pasta, chutneys and jams.

“We run a Country Garden Program with support from NGRM group who provide us with a grant to run a cooking and gardening program to promote sustainability, innovation and design, healthy eating, hygiene practices, science and maths skills,” Bianca said.

“Being the correct height for the students it will really help us.”

Yungaburra Markets implement stronger COVID controls THE Yungaburra markets are back on again this Saturday with organisers saying there will be greater COVID precautions and more enforced social distancing than last month’s markets.

The return of the markets in July after several months of closure brought people out in droves to visit local artisans, farmers and stall holders.

Nicole Willinger who is the Market Coordinator said that the organisers learnt a lot from the

reopening of the markets in July.

“The last markets were a great success and we have had numerous meetings since then,” she said.

“We are now implementing more signage and we will be encouraging social distancing rules with our social distancing fairies.”

Nicole said that the Yungaburra markets were important for the whole town and not just for the benefit of the stall holders.

“We really want to impress the importance of responsibility when it comes to social distancing, if the markets are looking too busy, maybe visit some of the local shops instead,” said Nicole.

“Our peak time for traffic is from 10am to 11.30am, if people could come outside of those hours to relieve congestion that would be a bonus.”

Nicole also added that regardless of the precautions that the markets take, visitors need

to also enforce their own social distancing.

“No matter how much we do to implement a safe and successful market for our community, it all comes down to the personal responsibility of people who are attending to socially distance,” she said.

Malanda Landcare returns from lockdown THE Malanda Landcare group has returned to rehabilitation activities after the COVID-19 pandemic forced their suspension in March.

The group began work last year at the Elinjaa Falls visitor area by tackling the infestation of Cherry Guava trees that was taking over a large part of the forest floor as well as a large tangle of lantana on the steep slope across the creek, before COVID stopped work.

The group has now returned with a series of working bees at popular tourist sites in Malanda and Millaa Millaa Work began again on July 26 with a working bee cleaning up the Harold West Walk which fol-

Malanda Landcare President Peter Arnold-Nott said that funds for larger projects have been difficult to come by. “The bushfires had already taken their toll, and then coronavirus hit.

So while our group continues to apply for funding for larger projects, we have taken the decision to focus on small, local projects that will hopefully improve the overall experience of tourists and locals enjoying the natural beauty of this part of the Tablelands.”

Online beef learning DESPITE COVID-19 restrictions, the grazing community have been able to access information on new and emerging technologies via a new online webinar series as part of the EBeef project.

John McLaughlin, E-Beef project officer for Northern Gulf Resource Management Group said the event was the first of its kind for the project “We had a great turn out and had some excellent speakers presenting on all sorts of topics; from virtual fencing with GPS collars, to predicting cattle live weight gains using remote weighing units and satellite data,” he said.

Traditional field days were scheduled to occur earlier in the year, but due to the restrictions, alternatives had to be in-

troduced.

“You can never replace a true face-to-face field day, but these webinars do allow us to showcase new technologies to a wide audience pretty conveniently,” he said.

“We had people attend from every state in Australia and even had participants from Brazil and the USA.” The four sessions, which took place in June, involved 12 presenters from 11 organisations working in the Queensland grazing Industry.

“The feedback we received from surveys has been really promising. The majority of participants found it valuable and it was a trigger to a lot of new ideas to improve grazing performance,” Mr McLaughlin said.

“Testing new technology can require some troubleshooting, but we are now in the stage of the project where more data

Finals finish for futsal AFTER a disjointed and scattered season the Tableland Futsal Club were finally able to continue the remainder of their season and host their grand final matches in the beginning of August.

Six divisions joined together at the Atherton State High School hall after a very long and strange season. Before the lockdown all the fixtures for the season had been played so all there was to do was play the finals, which Covid put a quick stop too.

Now out on the other side of the lockdown the teams got the chance to face each other and put their 2020 summer series to rest.

Tablelands Futsal Club Manager Larry Cook was very sur-

prised to see the players keeping their form from before lockdown.

“The players were very excited to get back into the game and they enjoyed themselves immensely,” he said.

“I was quite surprised that they all just leapt back into the games like there wasn’t a gap at all.

“All of their skills were as active as ever.”

All of the teams fought hard during their games but there can only ever be one champion, the results are as follows.

The u8’s saw the Rockets being defused by the Tolga Bin Chickens with them flying away with a 4-3 win. The u10 Randoms took the sting out of the Malanda Hornets with a deci-

sive 8-2 win. The Eagles battered a storm to put the Thunder away in a 7-2 win for the u11’s finals.

The u13 Ninja Nights broke the clubs goal scoring record by 30 goals with them booting 295 goals for the season with 11 of them going against their grand final rivals the A-Team where they won 11-5. The Mixed division saw All 4 Fun roasting Spuds R Us in a blitzing 9-5 finish.

Finally the Mens division fell between the Hot Favourites and the Uncles with the Uncles copping a 14-4 beating.

A short winter season is currently underway to keep players legs warm before the next summer season that begins in September.

Atherton dominated the opening 20 minutes moving the ball around purposefully.

However, it was Mareeba who struck first thanks to a well taken free kick.

Their second goal came shortly after with a poorly defended corner, taking the score to 0-2 by the end of the first half.

The Mareeba Motorcycle Club hosted Round 1 of the Motocross Club Championships last Sunday, with over 120 riders attending from Mt Isa to Townsville, and everywhere in between.

With five months of no racing, everyone was keen for a bit of high flying, bar banging action. And the riders did not disappoint.

There were a number of riders who managed clean sweeps of their classes – Navrin Grothues (Mareeba), Mark Oberthur (Mareeba), Braden Plath (Cairns), Zac Watson (Townsville), Byron McDermid (Innisfail) and Heath Fisher (Townsville).

Riders were aged from 4 years and all are keenly awaiting dates for Round 2.

Atherton had a mountain to climb in the second half but although they dominated possession, they could not catch up; ending the game with 0-2 to Mareeba.

The local Derby is set for a rematch on Friday night kicking off at 8.30pm in Mareeba.

Before this, the Eagles play a midweek home game on Tuesday against Edgehill at 7.30pm at the Atherton International Club.

Atherton Cricket celebrates stellar year

The Atherton Golf Club recently took out two awards at the Queensland Golf Industry awards including Golf Club of the Year, pictured is members of the club with their award.

Golf club takes over national awards THE Atherton Golf Club was jumping for joy after they won two awards at the recent Queensland Golf Industry Awards including Golf Club of the Year.

The virtual awards ceremony took place early last month with the Atherton Golf Club being named Golf Club of the Year (less than 400 members) and their Greens Superintendent Brendan Clark being awarded the Environment and Safety Excellence Award.

The awards were announced virtually by the Queensland Golf Industry Awards as the initial ceremony in the Gold Coast was derailed by COVID-19.

To be in competition for the award the Atherton Golf Club had to submit an application detailing some of the impressive work they have done over 2019.

Some of these works include improvements to the course including the construction of a new green, bunkers and tees, a Turf Nursary which contains an excess of 500 plants which can be used around the course for the propagation and re-establishment of new gardens.

These projects and many more were not the only driving force behind the clubs win as Club President Mark Johnson

believes their junior golf program was what pushed them over the line.

“We were reasonably competitive last year (2018) but not successful,” he said.

“Innovation and progress, financial improvements, tightening of the management committee, course development and the development of our juniors program are some of the reasons we were in the running to win the award.”

As the presentations were done virtually a screen was set up in the clubhouse for the members to watch the awards and capture the moment they won.

“We got a group together at the clubhouse and set up a big screen and made a night of it,” he said.

“Some of the members made a bit more of a night of it than others.

“I’m aware that the Club Captain and the Green Superintendent were feeling a little bit cloudy the next day.”

When asked how he felt about winning Mr Johnson described the mood in the clubhouse as euphoric.

“The mood was complete euphoria, the shouting and the celebrating was phenomenal,” he said.

“It’s recognition of the effort that a lot of people put into the club.”

The club also supports the local QITE program with the workers gaining valuable experience and knowledge in the agricultural and horticultural sectors while also gaining improved competency in machinery operation.

The Atherton Golf Club Greens Superintendent Brendan Clark also received his own award being awarded the Environment and Safety Excellence Award.

In order to win the award, Mr Clark was judged on his safety and environmental management system, vegetation plan and a landscape management plan which are currently implemented at the club.

With prior experience with epar, a safety and environmental management company focusing on golf clubs Mr Clark had the upper hand for the award.

“I’m very honoured, it was a great feeling to win this award,” he said.

“It’s always nice when the club you work for highlights your effort.

“It makes you really feel like a part of the team.”

Paul Nasser was named Atherton Senior Cricket First Grade Player of the Year and Colt of the Year.

THE Atherton Cricket Club held their senior presentation night on Saturday, August 15, with four of their members receiving lifetime memberships.

Saturday wrapped up a huge year for the club which earlier this year won the Cricket Far North first grade one and two day championships along with the second grade one day title.

oio, Jim Sceresini and Shannon Sceresini were all honoured with lifetime memberships of the Atherton club.

First Grade player Paul Nasser won three awards out of four at the presentations with him receiving the Player of the Year, U21 Colt of the Year and the Batting award while the bowling award went to Michael Salerno.

Fred Pittorino won the Cricket Far North (CFN) First Grade Wicket Keeping Award, Chris Adams also took away the CFN Under 21 Player of the Year award.

The Second Grade Batting Award went to Ken Webb who also received the CFN Second Grade Wicket Keeping Award; Nick Smith received the Bowling Award for Seconds.
