AFTER serving his community as a firefighter for 38 years, Dimbulah local Frank De lacovo has called it a day and retired from the Dimbulah Fire Station.

Mr De lacovo operated as an Auxiliary Firefighter from 1981 to September 17 this year and was involved in the quashing of the recent bushfires that plagued the region, just prior to his retirement.

Mr De lacovo commented on his early days as a firefighter and his reasoning behind his 38 years of service.

“They just needed volunteers in Dimbulah as there weren’t too many at that time,” he said.

“So my friend and I decided to join the fire service I suppose and help out the town.

“When we started off all they had for us was a helmet, a set of overalls and gumboots, and that’s how we fought fires.”

Times have changed howev-

er with firefighters being fitted with oxygen tanks and fireproof suits in order to battle the raging blazes that can occur.

“Everything has been updated today,” Mr De lacovo said.

“Where our station was (Dimbulah) we just used to fight fires, we didn’t have the equipment to help people in crashes and accidents.

“But then they gave us the right equipment, but it was only a hand pump so we used that to cut people out of cars.”

Due to the locality and community where Mr De lacovo served, a popular adage was used when the siren rung to signal a fire.

“We used to say ‘whose barns are on fire now’ you know,” he laughed.

Being an auxiliary firefighter, Mr De lacovo received all the appropriate training of a full time firefighter and even regularly engaged in competitions within the district.

A favourite memory from his career was when the local Dimbulah Fire Station won an exercise during one of these competitions.

“The event we won was where they put an assembly of cars and give you a scenario,” he said.

“They might crush a car with dummies inside and you’ve got to cut them out in a certain time while coordinating with police and ambulance.

“We were up against full timers and out of the two events on the day we came first in one which I thought was bloody brilliant.”

Mr De lacovo spoke glowingly about the cohesion and brotherhood present within the auxiliary fire service in Dimbulah.

“All us there, we all got along and we all treated it as a family,” he said.

“We all blended in really well and had each other’s backs.”

A strong bond is needed in a profession where loss and grief can become prevalent; this is just the case as Mr De lacovo alluded to a terrible experience where a young boy was unable to be saved in time from a fire.

“You know in the service we had pagers, and every time it would go off you would just be hoping that it wasn’t someone you know,” Mr Delacovo said.

“It just makes it all the much harder.

“However when a situation like that does arrive, the Queensland Fire Service is really quick to respond with counsellors and assistance where needed.”

There were many influential people throughout Mr De lacovo’s career that helped and shaped him into becoming a better firefighter, one such man is Dennis McKinley, a retired firefighter and now Lions Club member.

“He started off as an auxiliary and then moved onto Ather-

ton and then to Mareeba where he became the boss for the area,” Mr De lacovo said.

“He was one person who was really good, he got everything we needed for our station.

“Whenever we needed something in the station to help us fight fires, we would get it as soon as possible.”

Mr De lacovo spoke about the Auxiliary fire service and how it can be a Segway into a fulltime career.

“You get new recruits and you tell them, if you like it and you’re good at it, there’s always a chance that you can become a full time firefighter,” he said.

“We’ve got one bloke in Dimbulah there now and he’s really good. “Hoping that one day he will become a full time firefighter.”

Mr De lacovo currently works at Casali’s in Mareeba as a mechanic and operates a bus run during the schooling terms.

Motel’s construction “ahead of schedule”

THE official opening of the Cape Gateway Motel on 3-5 Williams Close off the Peninsula Development Road is nearing, with the accommodation provider set to open its doors in April next year.

Cape Gateway Motel owner and developer Greg Williams said construction for Stage 1 of the motel is ahead of schedule.

“Construction for the most part has generally been smooth sailing,” he said.

“However with any project there are issues that you encounter, but I must say the builders along with everyone else involved has done a wonderful job.”

Mr Williams said Stage 1 of the Cape Gateway Motel will consist of a reception, bar, restaurant and 34-36 rooms.

“The accommodation will include a family unit, two onebedroom duplexes, 16 singleroom accommodation and 16 motel units at the back of the complex,” he said.

“There will also be a lawn area with facilities for RVs and caravans in the interim until Stage 2 is built.”

Mr Williams said he hopes

to have Stage 2 of the motel finished within 18 months to two years – however he noted that its completion is dependent on its financial viability.

“I’m hoping to have Stage 2 built off the back of cash flow from Stage 1,” he said.

“Stage 2 will have approximately 28 rooms, and while we’re still determining its feasibility from a financial standpoint, it will be a lot cheaper than Stage 1 as we have all the infrastructure such as water, sewerage, electricity and street lights in place.”

Mr Williams said after studies courtesy of commercial valuers Herron Todd White along with economists, he’s confident he has found a gap in the market that he and the town of Mareeba can be the beneficiaries of.

“The reports outlined the current and future demand along with the traffic flow, and the research’s findings indicate a definite need for it in the area,” he said.

While Mr Williams noted his excitement about the challenges ahead, he said it has been a tougher project than first expected.

“It has been very stressful at times and has taken its toll, but

Mr Williams said he has engaged a company to do the motel’s branding and marketing in the lead up to its opening in April.

“We’ve just secured our domain and all the rest of it so our marketing strategy is still a work

TRC councillor accused of misconduct

THE TABLELANDS Regional Council Division 1 Councillor’s conduct has come under the microscope after a TRC resident’s complaint against Kate Eden was tabled at their council meeting a fortnight ago.

Ronda Leitner was the complainant in the matter, alleging that Cr Eden displayed “aggressive, intimidating and bully-like behaviour” when speaking with her over the phone.

Ms Leitner said the alleged phone conversation occurred in July and was in relation to the proposed solar farm on Marnane Rd, Tolga.

“I spoke with Cr Eden the night before the council meeting and she told me that she hadn’t read over the submissions,” she said.

“The week following the meeting, I called Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick to thank her for voting against the solar farm, and during that conversation I relayed to her that Cr Eden had informed me that she hadn’t read over the submissions.”

Ms Leitner claims shortly thereafter she received an unacceptable and abusive phone call from Cr Eden.

“She called me a liar and

claimed that she can proof-read any submissions in ten minutes due to her six years of tertiary education,” Ms Leitner said.

“Given she is representing ratepayers, greater queries should be made into the submissions of large projects such as solar farms as it effects a number of households in the region.

“In my opinion Cr Eden’s behaviour was in severe breach of the code of conduct and she should be justly held to account.

“Ratepayers should be treated with respect and in a non-discriminatory manner and shouldn’t be subjected to intimidation from a councillor.”

Ms Leitner not only had issues with Cr Eden’s conduct, as she was unhappy with how the matter was dealt with at the TRC meeting on September 26 – taking particular issue with her identity remaining anonymous throughout the agenda item.

“TRC did not even advise me that the item was listed - I was informed by a member of the public,” she said.

“I was not asked if I wanted my identity protected even though I was sitting in the room at the time.

“The alleged ‘protection’ was merely used to avoid embarrassment to Cr Eden, so the public would not know what she had done; it certainly gave no justice to me.”

Ms Leitner said it was accepted as a complaint of substance by the Office of the Independent Commissioner and referred to the TRC for action.

“Prior to the TRC meeting, the CEO asked if I would ‘be satisfied’ with an apology - I declined unless it was to be made public,” she said.

“This offer would not have been made to me if there was nothing to apologise for.”

As it pertains to the reasons behind Ms Leitner’s anonymity, TRC Chief Executive Officer Justin Commons said council had not received the complainant’s permission to release their name.

“Unless and until both parties agree to the release, we will continue to treat the report as confidential in line with our Investigation Policy and Standing Orders that are in turn consistent with the model policy and orders issued by the State Government,” he said.

“Councillor Eden has pro-

vided her consent for the report to be released, but to date the complainant has refused consent.”

Mr Commons said mediation in such circumstances is generally used to resolve conflict and avoid investigations.

“The process for dealing with complaints against Councillors is set out in the Local Government Act 2009 and under section 150P a complaint must be referred to Office of the Independent Assessor,” he said.

“The Office of the Independent Assessor subsequently referred the complaint to Council for investigation and, in accordance with our Investigation Policy, it was investigated by the Mayor.”

Despite questions from Division 6 Councillor Owen Byrnes regarding Cr Eden’s alleged history of engaging in unmannerly phone calls in the past, the report was rejected as it found Cr Eden did not fail to: 1. To discharge the councillor’s responsibilities by contravening the behavioural standard, namely, to carry out responsibilities conscientiously and in the best interested of the council and community; or

2. To treat people in a reasonable, just and respectful and non-discriminatory way: or 3. To ensure that conduct does not reflect adversely on the reputation of council “The complainant has been advised that, if they are unsatisfied with our response, they

have the right to seek advice from the Ombudsman,” Mr Commons said.

Cr Eden said she denies the allegations made against her and that she doesn’t recall engaging in a conversation with the complainant.

Charity golf day in support of Sarah THE Mareeba Business Women’s Club is hosting a charity family golf day this Saturday, October 12, in support of local Sarah Bensted.

Pools reopen in time for summer

Pools, much to the delight of keen swimmers and families.

The pool hours haven’t changed and there are many programs open to the public to come and be part of.

There is something for everyone at the Mareeba Pool – learning to swim, club swimming and water polo to name a few.

The acquisition of the Dimbulah Pool under Cotter's Aquatics Swim and Fitness is currently being finalised (as of print deadline).

“We are still in the process of acquiring the Dimbulah Pool,” said Mrs Cotter.

“We are hoping to implement some good programs there when it is all up and running.

“These pools do a lot for the community and possible businesses.”

Mrs Cotter urges businesses to contact the pools for use for their clients, whether it is chiropractic, physiotherapy or any other service.

They also run an assortment of courses like first aid and surf lifesaving.

Mrs Cotter heard on the radio early last week that Australia has a 50% obesity rate, and proposes swimming to help fix that.

“I think people need to get out and exercise more,” she said.

“There are a lot of specialists around town to help people out with this sort of thing.”

Baal Gammon mine remains an environmental concern

RESIDENTS who live along the Walsh River and Jamie Creek continue to feel the effects of the uncontrolled leaking of toxic contamination from the abandoned Baal Gammon mine near Watsonville.

There have been two major contamination events over the past 18 months, after the State Government found in August of last year that copious amounts of aluminium, zinc, copper and cadmium had leaked from the mine into the nearby Walsh River and Jamie Creek.

As a result, residents living along both waterways were told not to drink, swim or use the water by the State Government.

The initial findings in 2018 was compounded by a second bout of extensive contamination after heavy rain earlier this year saw a new seepage point in the mine which was once again leaking into the neighbouring waterways.

A Department of Natural Re-

sources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) spokesperson said over the past six months, DNRME and the Department of Environment and Science (DES) have been treating the accumulated water to neutralise the acidity and remove dissolved metals.

We are also managing water runoff from the surrounding areas by directing flows into the pit, where it can be treated,” they said.

“Irrigation-style evaporative sprinklers have been installed to reduce the amount of water onsite.

“This is in addition to several large industrial evaporator cannons that should be fully operational by the end of October 2019.

“However, with the wet season approaching, we are preparing for the likely scenario that discharging treated water from the site over the coming months would be the safest and smartest option.”

The spokesperson said they are currently finalising their consultation and assessments and determining whether to discharge prior to the wet season or during the wet season.

“This decision will be based on community and environmental considerations and input from key government agencies including DES,” they said.

“Safety is paramount - any water discharge will include detailed downstream monitoring, to ensure the water quality remains within approved limits.

“If variations are detected, we will either slow or stop the water discharge and stakeholders – including residents along the Walsh and Jamie creek – will receive seven days’ notice prior to any water release.

“Jamie Creek is currently dry for most of its course, however, immediately downstream of the mine there is some flow of mine affected water and this continues to be monitored.”

Water quality in Jamie Creek and parts of the Walsh River have exceeded various guidelines in the past due to historic mining and other factors separate to any impacts from the Baal Gammon mine.

Queensland Health maintains its previous recommendation not to utilise water from Jamie Creek for human consumption, domestic or recreational purposes.

Water from the Walsh River should be tested to ensure it is fit for purpose.

THURSDAY marks World Mental Health Day, a day which serves as an opportunity to highlight mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.

World Mental Health was first celebrated in 1992 via an initiative courtesy of the World Federation for a Mental Health, a mental health organisation with a presence in more than 150 countries around the globe.

Mental health has continued to be a plague on societies throughout the world as it often

has a stigma attached to it – therefore this particular day encourages people to shine more of a positive light on the illness.

And despite being blessed to live in one of the most prosperous countries in the world, mental health doesn’t discriminate.

One in five Australians are affected by mental health at some point throughout their life, many of whom choose not to receive help.

Mareeba counsellor Jenny Heraghty said it is crucial that those people who aren’t strug-

gling with mental health issues to do their best in identifying signs of mental illness in others.

“It’s important that we listen to people who are having trouble with their mental health and ensure that we don’t judge them,” she said.

“They need to be aware that most people will struggle with their mental health at some point in their lives and it’s not something to be stigmatised.”

Ms Heraghty noted that she believes the societal discussions surrounding mental health have

dramatically improved in recent years.

“There’s definitely more acceptance within the general community which is great to see,” she said.

“In addition, there’s far greater access to mental health services which provides those struggling with more help and understanding regarding their illness.”

larly in rural communities and within the older population.

“Firstly with rural and regional Australia, there are still big gaps when it comes to mental health,” she said.

“Members of the community haven’t been as exposed to it and there’s a mantra that often exists that encourages people struggling to pull their socks up and get on with it.

“However there is no shame in asking for help, so that should be the message.

Ms Heraghty said if you’re struggling with your mental health, it’s imperative that you reach out to your General Practitioner, a psychologist or counsellor for the necessary help.

“The temporary RV carpark was opened in July, just in time for the ‘grey nomads’ season,” a Mareeba Shire Council spokesperson said.

“The carpark is open to the public and anyone can use it and council have applied for funding to create a permanent carpark at the site on Railway Avenue and is awaiting the outcome of the application.”

Country music festival set to rock Mareeba

Tyson Lucas is excited to be back in Mareeba for the 2019 FNQ Country Music Festival.

THE annual FNQ Country Music Festival is back again at Kerribee Park with a host of local and visiting country music artists set to light up the arena.

Hosted by the Walkamin Country Music Club, the festival kicks off this Friday night, October 11 and lasts through the weekend to Sunday October 13.

The talent quest kicks off the weekend on Friday night from 7pm with country rock and con-

tinues on the Saturday from 8am Saturday night, October 12, is the big event in the arena where country music artists will showcase their talents for all to enjoy.

Breast Cancer Awareness month – Women urged to put health first BREAST Cancer Awareness Month in October is yet another strong reminder to all Far North Queensland women they should put their health and well-being first. Early detection remains the best chance of survival.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch urges Far North Queensland women to learn about breast cancer and have regular breast checks to catch the disease early.

He said it is important women of all ages self-check their breasts, and women aged 50 to 74 years take up BreastScreen Australia’s invitation of a free screening.

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Australian women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer,” Mr Entsch said. “Many women are still not participating in the free screen-

ing program, although it could save their lives.

“More than 19,300 Australian women will be diagnosed with the disease this year and more than 3,000 women are expected to die from it.

“I strongly encourage all women in FNQ to take up BreastScreen Australia’s invitation of a free screening, which could end up saving their lives.”

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt encouraged all women to visit Cancer Australia’s website – breastcancerriskfactors.gov. au – to better understand their own risks.

“We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer,” Mr Hunt said. “This month is a great time for every woman to think about this disease, learn more about the risks and take action to protect herself.

Lions unite in Mareeba LIONS and Lionesses from near and far converged on Mareeba at the weekend for 2019 Lions Clubs International District (201Q2) Convention.

Held over the long weekend, the convention saw local and visiting members from as far as Mackay, Mount Isa and PNG come together for three days.

The festivities kicked off on Friday night at the Mareeba Turf

The theme for this year’s convention was ‘gone with the wind’ so a hot air balloon display was available at the meet and greet on Friday night.

The main convention day was on Saturday at the Mareeba International Club and was packed full of guest speakers.

sweet with the farewell and BBQ being held at midday on Sunday.

Mareeba Lions President Gary Searle was extremely happy with the weekend.

“The biggest thing about this convention was the coming together of all the Lions and Lionesses,” he said.

“It was like a big family reunion.

Kindy set to celebrate 50 years FOR 50 years the children of Mareeba have laughed, played and grown at Mareeba Community Kindergarten.

Now Mareeba’s oldest kindy is set to celebrate with past and present students, parents and teachers this Sunday, October 13, at the kindy’s 50th anniversary celebration open day.

The Mareeba Community Kindergarten at Stewart Street will be open to the public and will feature a day full of memories and fun.

The day is sure to be packed

with not only kids but adults too looking to remember a younger time, with open classrooms, photos and displays available for a walk down memory lane.

The day will also feature activates for the kids with face painting and games, plus a bottle stall and a hundred dollar board.

Mareeba Community Kindergarten committee member Samantha Malcolm is excited to see people coming out and attending the anniversary.

“The kindy has been such a

huge part of the community,” she said.

“I know that is has touched a lot of people and a lot of families.

“We are hoping for 40 to 50 people in the kindy during the day.”

The 50th anniverary committee was established last year and its sole focus was to make this anniversary a memorable one.

“The main reason I got involved was my four girls attended the kindy as well as my

husband when he was little,” Mrs Malcolm said.

“This isn’t only a chance for current parents to see their children’s classroom and art work, but 50 years’ worth with old artworks being on display.

“I urge past and present families of the kindy to come out and experience a walk down memory lane.”

The anniversary celebration will be held from 9.30am to 1.30pm with everyone welcome to come and join in the fun.

Aviation Museum calling on locals THE Far North Queensland Aviation Museum (FNQAM) is calling on members of the community to get involved with the community-based museum to help preserve, inspire, educate and restore the rich aviation history that exists within the region.

The restoration and preservation of aviation-related artefacts will not be the only benefit to come as a result of the museum, with it also being yet another not-for-profit organisation in Mareeba with a strong community approach – providing a space for like-minded individuals to come together and socialise over their shared interest.

In addition, the museum is expected to bring a muchneeded tourism boost to Mareeba.

Located at the Mareeba Airport, the FNQAM will consist of aircrafts from World War II, aviators,

memorabilia, interactive displays, aircraft simulation along with a café for all to enjoy.

Members of the FNQAM have been toiling away to get this project off the ground for quite some time, and they are looking for interested people to help in a range of roles at the organisation.

They are also asking that if anyone has aviation-relation exhibits, uniforms and retired parts etc. for display, to please get in touch.

The FNQAM is still currently in its design and fundraising stage.

Jirrbal traditional owners plan for bigger roles in caring for country EXCITEMENT is building amongst the Tableland’s Jirrbal people as they begin planning for a more active role in caring for country.

The group is embarking on a major planning phase, which traditional owner Desley Mosquito sees as a stepping stone to new opportunities including a ranger program and the establishment of a Jirrbal indigenous protected area.

“We are beginning with a country-based plan that’ll set the course for us to go forward together,” Desley said.

“I see it as a solid foundation for our people. It’s early days yet but we’re hoping to hold a workshop later this year where every-

one can come together and share their thoughts and feelings about what they want for country.”

The initiative follows a recent country-based planning workshop for traditional owners from all over the Far North which was organised by Terrain NRM in partnership with the Wet Tropics Management Authority and funded by the Tablelands Regional Council and the Australian Government.

“We had a small group and one-on-one time to get things started,’’ Desley said.

“Our people have a strategic plan but this kind of planning includes that in amongst a lot of other things that can range from caring for country to fam-

ily wellbeing, health, education and generally looking after our mob.”

Desley also wants countrybased planning to inspire the younger generation.

“We belong to this land. The nature of this land is our identity – the trees, the water, the sea,’’ she said.

“We say this and we try to teach our children this.”

Terrain NRM’s Vanessa Drysdale said many traditional owner groups had now completed or were in the process of completing a country-based plan.

“These plans can be tailored to geographical areas, language groups or family groups,’’ she

said.

“They also provide a framework for negotiating partnerships with government agencies and other groups, and for applying for funding to actively manage traditional lands.”

The Country-Based Planning Workshop was funded through the Tablelands Regional Council with an Australian Government Department of Social Services Strong and Resilient Communities Grant.

This project was supported

by Terrain NRM through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. It was also supported by the Wet Tropics Management Authority.

2. Coarsely chop the cauliflower and microwave 2 minutes on high, until slightly soft and drain water.

PCYC football carnival big success THE Dam Outrigger Club recently returned from the Mission Beach Annual Regatta, where they punched above their weight against more sizeable clubs across Far North Queensland.

Following their success in Mission Beach, they entered teams which competed at the Trans-Tasman Gubbi Gubbi International Outrigger Canoe Competition which was held over the school holidays at Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast.

It was once again a fantastic showing, with a number of impressive team and individual performances.

Competition was fierce with experienced teams from NZ, South Pacific Islands and the larger Australian Clubs of Mooloolaba, Bayside, Outrigger Australia and Sydney attending.

The most notable result for The Dam Outrigger Club included their U16s V6 team, who finished sixth fastest in the South Pacific.

The Dam Outrigger Club coach Ralph Seed said he is extremely proud of the club’s juniors as this was only the third Regatta they had attended.

“The two weeks preceding Gubbi Gubbi they all won medals at the HOTTI and Mission beach Regatta,” he said.

“The juniors are the future of the sport and we are very fortunate here on the Tablelands to have great facilities at Tinaburra Drive and Lake Tinaroo to train on.”

PCYC Mareeba hosted their annual youth Indigenous Rugby League Football Carnival on Friday, October 4, at Davies Park, Mareeba.

The main objective was to bring together youths from all over the Far North, especially remote communities, to play football.

This assists the youths to develop their skill set by playing with a broader range of youths with varying levels of skill.

With over 100 players who attended, the field was packed full of up and coming football stars, with teams travelling from Napranum, Innisfail, Cairns, Mossman and Yarrabah.

Sergeant Mary-Anne West

said this annual event was a great way for local police and police liaison officers to interact with juveniles from across the region.

“We have local officers who volunteer their time at the event to help foster relationships with our local youths,” Sergeant West said.

The final game of the day was between North Queensland Cook Island and Kadar from Mossman.

The North Queensland Cook Island team battled to a hardfought win of 16-6 to come away with the Kalip Parker Memorial Shield.

Head Coach Bobby Benioni spoke about the carnival and

what it means to the community.

“Today wasn’t about winning, it was more of a development for the North Queensland Rugby League,” he said.

“It’s a stepping stone; it’s the foundation of what’s going to happen in the years to come.

“Exciting times for the Cook Islands Rugby league.”

Mr Benioni was also happy with his team’s performance and subsequent win.

“The wins great, we’ll take it,” he said.

“I’m really happy for the boys.”

All proceeds from the event helped fund the day and future Youth Development programs in Mareeba.

Mareeba Gymnastics Club coaching director Kelly Tulloch was extremely proud of all the gymnasts.

“It was an amazing experience and the kids had some great performances,” she said.

NQ Zone Rodeo finals huge success

The ABCRA NQ Zone Rodeo Finals were held last fortnight and saw competitors from all across Queensland travel to Eureka Creek in Dimbulah to fight it out for the top spot.

The finals were a resounding success with more than 700 people coming through the gates to witness the events in the arena throughout the action packed day.

Nugget of the North’s, who hosted the finals, vice president Dan Miller was extremely happy with the event and the feedback he got.

“It was a great time, a really good rodeo,” he said.

“It was a fierce competition especially in the bronc and bull rides.

“We had competitors and officials saying it was some of the best bull and bronc riding they had seen.”

Mr Miller also expressed his gratitude to all the officials and volunteers who gave their time to help the rodeo.

“I’d like to thank all the volunteers who helped keep the rodeo running,” he said.

“As well as the entire arena personnel who helped everything run smoothly.”

Two down – one to go Youth fight till the end

THE Mareeba Bulls were on a rampage in the opening minutes of their grand final against the Stratford Dolphins on Saturday.

Liam Leporati opened the score after just 30 seconds on the clock, but before they could end their celebration the referee awarded the Dolphins a penalty which was well taken, making it 1-1 with the match merely two minutes old.

Eight minutes later the Bulls were ahead again through Liam Leporati after some excellent work through the mid field opened a gap for him to strike from inside the penalty area.

The teams went into the dressing rooms at half time with the Bulls leading 2-1.

In the second half an injury to Lucio Da Rocha forced a substitution with Dennis Allan to

fill the gap in midfield. Within moments of the substitution the Bulls went 3-1 up after a scramble in the penalty area following a corner. Liam Pozzebon took advantage of the error to smack the ball home from close range.

After dominating for long periods the Bulls lost concentration allowing the Dolphins to pull one back to make it 3-2 with five minutes to go.

There was an immediate response from the Bulls as Damien Wildman ran half the length of the pitch to round the goal keeper and slot home his team’s fourth, Mareeba were up 4-2.

Coach Dennis Allan was ecstatic after the match.

“I am so glad we won, last year’s game was always on the back of my mind and there was a moment when we were 3-2

that I thought here we go again, but then we got the fourth and we were able to relax and enjoy the moment as there were only a few minutes to go,” said Coach Allen.

“Full credit to the boys they followed the game plan to a tee and never stopped running, everyone played a part, we’re going to party at the club house tonight.”

With the premiership and grand final in the bag, the Bulls now concentrate on this weekends Crad Evans final against Olympic FC from Townsville.

The match kicks off at 5pm at Tiger Park, Edge Hill.

The possibility of the elusive treble is still alive and everyone is welcome to come along and support the Bulls this Saturday.

MAREEBA Bulls were full of confidence going into the FNQ Football Youth grand final on Saturday at Endeavour Park Cairns, up against their counterparts from Innisfail.

It was Innisfail who made the most of the first half with striker Ivan Ozzi scoring the opening goal after a breakaway down the left wing left Bulls keeper Josh Leporati exposed for him to put in a floaty which sailed over his head and into the right hand corner of the net.

The teams went to the dressing rooms with Innisfail 1-0 up.

The Bulls came out fighting in the second half and once they settled were soon on the score board when Jon Gambino struck a bullet to even the scores.

The match then settled into a battle of the midfield as both

teams tried to get the upper hand. Neither team was able to take advantage of each other’s tiredness, but gave their all for their respective clubs.

Three minutes in Innisfail capitalized on a Bull’s defensive error and scored a creamer through Ivan Ozzi giving Innisfail a 2-1 lead. It was short lived as Mareeba struck back immediately again through Jon Gambino.

The match went in to extra time and it was the Bulls who took the lead through Milan Quintieri after just five minutes.

The bulls seemed to have done enough but it wasn’t to be as Ivan Ozzi scored his hat trick to even the score two minutes from time.

The lottery of a penalty shootout loomed and it was the

Innisfail keeper Elliot Ferguson who saved the only penalty of the shootout to give the Innisfail Cutters the grand final after a 3-3 draw in normal time and 5-4 on penalties.

After the match Coach Luch Avolio said he was disappointed with the loss but not with the way the boys played. “They gave 200%, the hot and windy conditions were no excuse and the teams were very evenly matched, we look forward to next year.”

Innisfail Coach Marc Di Carlo said “It was great to see the two country teams in the final, neither deserved to lose but there has to be a winner, both teams played a tremendous game it’s a credit to our boys as this is the third time in a row that the youth have won the Grand final.”

2019 football season wraps up in style

FNQ Football’s grand final weekend kicked off on Friday night with a change of venue due to the deluge Cairns received last week making the fields unplayable.

Matches were switched to Mareeba’s Lindsay Australia Stadium for the Fillies, Third Division and Second Division grand finals.

In the Fillies Match the JCU Strikers had a tremendous start with seasoned goal scorer Morgan Stanton scoring a hat trick of goals in the first half hour of the match.

Marlin Coast Rangers had a difficult time penetrating the JCU defence. The match went into half time with the Strikers leading 3-0.

Marlin Coast Rangers came out fighting in the second half and tried valiantly to penetrate the JCU defence but to no avail.

They continually peppered the JCU back line but didn’t have the cutting edge make any impact.

JCU capitalized on a further defensive error and scored a fourth goal midway through the second half.

The Men’s Division 3 grand final between the Leichhardt Lions and the Stratford Dolphins proved a tight affair with the Lions taking an early lead in the first five minutes of the match.

Tight defending proved the order of the day as the Dolphins found it difficult to break down the Leichhardt defence.

Lacking structure the Leichhardt attack found large holes in the Dolphin back line and capitalized through Jacob Pagano who clinched a hat trick on the night with further goals from Connor Meredith and Gordon Carruthers to give the Lions a 5-1 grand final victory.

The Atherton Eagles went into their grand final match against the Douglas Dragon without their number one striker Scott Rawlings.

The talented striker was serving a suspension picked up in last Friday’s Semi- final against the Mareeba Bulls.

With some spectators thinking that the match was a forgone conclusion with Douglas easily accounting for the Eagles, no one told the Tableland outfit.

Atherton came out fighting in the first half but the Dragons controlled the mid field and were able to halt their progress to the final third.

It was Douglas who drew first blood when Juan Benitez sent the premiership winning team ahead.

As the match became a tug of war it was Atherton midfielder Jason Curcio who struck a long hard ball into the keeper

who fumbled allowing the ball to trickle over the line to draw things level.

The match came to an end with the scores locked a one a piece and the crowd were in for extra time.

Just five minutes into extra time Atherton were asked to come from behind again as Daniel Ferrero put Douglas ahead.

Atherton fought gallantly to the end but it was Douglas who ran our winners of the FNQ Football 2019 grand final 2-1 in the men’s second division.

On Saturday in other divisional Grand Finals, Edge Hill United Ladies hit the ground running in the Premier Ladies Grand final against premiers Leichhardt at Endeavour Park.

After taking an early lead which was short lived the Tigers scored a further three goals in the first half to take a 4-1 lead into the break.

Leichhardt failed to live up to their expectations and the second half proved they were well and truly out of the match as the Tigers went further ahead.

Leichhardt seemed tired, Edge Hill on the other hand looked like could have played all day.

With 20 minutes on the clock the Tigers went 6-1 up but celebrations were dampened as one of their players was stretchered off with a knee injury holding

the game up for half an hour while emergency services were called to care for the player.

When play resumed the Tigers pick up from where they left off continuing wave after wave of attacks on the Leichhardt goal.

The inevitable was looming and the final whistle put an end to a stellar performance by Edge Hill United winning the FNQ Football Premier Ladies grand

final 6-1.

In the Men’s premier division it was a dour first half between the Marlin Coast Rangers and Edge Hill United as both teams cancelled each other out.

Neither of the goal keepers was tested in the first half as they went into the break goalless.

The second half started just as the first one finished, but in the seventeenth minute MCR struck from a set piece through

Diego Piquerez to go 1-0 up.

The runaway premiers were on the ropes as MCR came to life and threatened to come away with the game against the run of play.

Jesse Casson equalized for the Tigers with 10 minutes remaining to make it 1-1, and before the crowd calmed down Ari Isman popped up to put the Tigers 2-1 ahead, giving the premiers the grand final win.
