WHEN people talk about the Mareeba Pool, one name carries more weight than others, June Cotter, a name synonymous with hard work, dedication and passion.

June can often be found patrolling the edges of the pool overseeing lessons, doing maintenance and rousing on kids for running near the pool, a sacred rule which we all know of.

She has been the lessee for the Mareeba, Dimbulah and Kuranda pools for number of years now and continues to maintain a high standard of presentation and functionality to her facilities.

Now joining her many accolades and awards, June has been honoured as a lifetime member of the Royal Life Saving Society Queensland which she was presented with last Friday, October 23.

Along with her life membership June also received a companion award to the National Royal Life Saving Society which serves as a homage to all of the tiresome years she has spent volunteering for the Royal Life Saving Society in Australia.

“I was blown out of the water when I heard I had received both of these awards,” June said.

“It’s lovely to be recognised because it’s been hard work, but I’m very proud.

“I love Royal Life Saving and what it stands for I think

that’s important and the more that we can stop the drowning rates in Australia, that’s what we’re here for.”

Before becoming a facility manager for the local pools June had her sights set on the medical field being a nurse, a medical secretary before she got involved in the inclusion area which led her to become the head technical classifier for Australia to classify Paralympians.

June’s time with Royal Life Saving Society Queensland

began in 1993 when she was involved with swimmers who were a part of the Queensland and national Royal Life Saving Team.

President of the Royal Life Saving Society Queensland Les Mole said that June is a valuable member of the Society.

“June has committed so much time and effort to aquatics and to the Royal Life Saving Society, there is a minimum criteria for these acknowledgements and she has well and truly surpassed that,” he said.

“What the community in North Queensland needs to understand is that June is probably the highest qualified pool operator in North Queensland.

“We shouldn’t understate that, it is a huge commitment to maintain her qualifications and serve the community in that way.”

With her many years of experience and knowledge, June remains in Mareeba for one simple reason that resonates with many – home is home.

QLD Election:

Get set to head to the polls THIS Saturday Queenslanders will head to polls to cast their vote in the 2020 State Election.

Two things that voters can normally expect at electoral centres on the day are lines and sausage sizzles.

This year the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) is expecting the lines to be shorter thanks to the record number of postal and pre-poll votes.

A record 2 million Queenslanders are expected to vote before October 31 due to COVID concerns.

ECQ chief executive Pat Vidgen said the commission had extended early polling hours to cope with the historic numbers of people flooding early polling booths.

“The are 200 early polling booths across Queensland with extended voting hours on Tuesday and Thursday nights, early voting centres are open until Friday October 31,” he said.

The ECQ also received nearly a million postal vote ap-

plications which is up from the 360,000 applications they had in 2017.

With a million postal votes and two million early votes expected, the ECQ said that anywhere between 50 – 70 per cent of people won’t be attending a voting centre on October 31.

The record number of postal votes also meant the ECQ was expecting the counting process to be delayed.

Mr Vidgen urged postal voters to fill out their ballot as soon as they received them and send it back straight away.

“In 2017, we had 11 per cent of the vote around 300,000 votes through the post,” he said.

“Yet the final declaration after Election Day took 13 days, in fact on day 12 only half the seats were declared.

“And that was with only 300,000 votes, not a million.”

I HAVE lived in the Cook electorate all my life and I have a deep understanding of our diverse needs.

I focus on building stronger communities and, through the range of Queensland Government funding programs, we have achieved massive infrastructure spending on roads, schools and hospitals, including the new $5 million computer tomography (CT) scanner and the $3.8 million endoscopy service at Mareeba Hospital as well as a new ambulance centre.

The Palaszczuk Government's strong health response and tough decisions on borders has kept the people of Cook safe, allowing us to deliver our regional economic recovery plan to create jobs and support small business and manufacturing.

Yodie Batzke – IND

AS an Independent Candidate, I believe it’s time major party’s admit their respective party policies have in some essence lost their meaning or distinction from each other.

I am seeking the support from voters who are prepared to make an informed decision when casting their votes. Our regional communities from Mareeba north to the Torres Straits, must consider voting for an Independent Candidate, based purely on issues they have raised with me, rather than on political ideology or partnership.

Our current number of registered voters in Cook is approximately 33,912 and this election will see long-standing party loyalties being challenged and tested.

KAP’s Shane Knuth secured $80M for the Atherton and Dimbulah hospital whilst the Mareeba and Mossman hospitals are neglected by ALP and LNP. KAP will return the office to Mareeba.

The LNP and ALP are both preferencing the Greens and will always be beholden to chasing votes in the South-East Corner.

Brett ‘Beaver’ Neal – ONE NATION

ONE Nation is the only party focussed on making life better for all Queenslanders.

Labor and Liberal governments have long stopped listening to everyday people and they prefer playing self-centred political games. The big two have failed repeatedly over decades to provide proper services for the people of Cook, including adequate hospitals, good roads, and crime prevention. Don’t fuel more failure by giving them your vote.

How to make your vote count THE Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) is reminding residents that when voting in this weekend’s 2020 State general election, every box on the ballot paper must be numbered in order of preference, starting with one.

Commissioner Pat Vidgen said planning the way electors will have their say this election includes ensuring their ballot paper is filled out correctly and can be included in the count.

“Every vote is important, and we want every elector to have their say,” he said.

“State elections in Queens-

land have full preferential voting, meaning every box on the ballot paper must be numbered in order of preference starting with one.

“There are an unprecedented 597 candidates at this election with 10 names on their ballot paper this can seem daunting when deciding who gets your vote.

“However, for your vote to count, you must preference every candidate.

“If you need help to do this – for example, if English is not your first language – then there are resources on our website and polling officials

who can help you at the booth when you go to vote.”

Mr Vidgen said some political parties have chosen not to show the other party names on their how-to-vote cards, so electors should be clear about how they will allocate their preferences.

“The ECQ is responsible for checking authorisation of election material but does not have a role in regulating the content of political advertising, other than statements about the process of voting or false statements about a person’s character or conduct,” Mr Vidgen said.

“Now more than ever and in the face of an avalanche of political information, electors are having to carefully consider the way they’ll have their say.

“Every elector is free to follow a party’s how-to-vote card or to make their own preference choices.

“The key message is, to ensure your vote counts, number every box on your ballot paper starting with one.”

Candidates for the seat of Hill at last Wednesdays meet the candidate’s event and the Atherton hotel.

Hill voters raise local issue

ON Wednesday night, October 21 about 50 people came together at the Atherton Hotel to listen to the candidates for Hill speak and answer questions ahead of the upcoming state election.

In attendance was the incumbent member for Hill Shane Knuth, Michael Hodgkins from the ALP, Nick Cuda from the LNP, Jennifer Cox from the Greens and independents Peter Campion and Chester Tuxford.

On the night each candidate was given five minutes to introduce themselves and fill in voters on some of their policies.

After a break the candidates were then given 60 seconds to

respond to random question from the members of the public Residents were asked to write down their questions upon arrival and even though numerous questions were asked, they all reflected similar themes, including water security, Covid recovery and youth crime.

Topics that were not asked included tax cuts, education, health or the public service.

Surprisingly there were some words exchanged between The LNP’s Nick Cuda and KAP’s Shane Knuth.

While there was also a lot of eye rolling between Independent Peter Campion and Greens

Candidate Jennifer Cox. The Express Newspaper’s Editor Carl Portella who MC’d the event said it was interesting hearing the various points of views.

“It was a great night as it’s always interesting to hear what different candidates and different political parties are thinking.”

“As well as hearing from local residents and finding out what is on their mind,” he said.

Bree Hargraves President of the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce said that the meet the candidates event was well attended.

“It was an interesting night, with many local concerns raised with the candidates,” she said.

“The Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce Inc would like thank everyone that attended, and the candidates for making time for the event, and The Express Newspaper for their assistance organising the night.

“Attendees can now head to the polling booths this weekend with confidence of where they will be placing their vote.”

Push for new NQ State

THE fight for a separate North Queensland state has gone up another gear with a billboard advocating for the separation appearing just before this weekend’s state election.

Boot Brisbane Inc is a community group advocating for the creation of a Central and North Queensland State which according to their website states “Through active advocacy, with the support of the residents of Central and North Queensland, cause the Queensland Government to initiate the process to create the new state of North Queensland.”

On Thursday October 15 organisers from Boot Brisbane unveiled a 6x3metre ‘Welcome to North Queensland’ billboard adjacent to the north bound lane of the Bruce Highway just south of Gin Gin. According to Boot Brisbane Co-ordinator Bill Bates the location of the billboard approximates the separation border from the then Southern Division of the Colony of Queensland as detailed in a 1890 Separation Petition.

“In identifying this as the border for the separation of Queensland to create a State of

North Queensland, Boot Brisbane Inc is deferring to the wisdom of our forefathers and it is for the opponents of separation to make the case against their determination,” he said “North of this border will be 1.2million square kilometres, nearly one million residents and resources to create a viable and prosperous new state of the Commonwealth of Australia.”

Leading into the election two minor parties have thrown their weight behind the Boot Brisbane movement.

According to a North Queensland First Policy Statement that was released last month “That should NQ First candidates be elected to the Parliament of Queensland, they will actively advocate for a separate State of North Queensland and will vote in the affirmative on any motion that provides for the initiation of the process to create such a new state.” they wrote.

It also states that “We commit that, if NQ First is given the opportunity to form part of a minority Queensland State Government, a non-negotiable condition of any agreement to form such Government shall be that: On taking office, the Gov-

ernment shall, in the first sitting of the 57th Parliament, initiate the process to deliver statehood to the residents and regions of Central, North and Far North Queensland.”

Head of Katter’s Australia Party Robbie Katter is also supportive of the idea for a new FNQ state.

“We are the only party to have put a motion to the government to investigate the possibility of a new FNQ state in the past 40 years,” he said.

“It is absolute lunacy and nonsense to say we should regard as sacrosanct the lines that were drawn on a map over 100 hundred years ago.

“We should all question whether those lines on a map are still delivering the best cultural or economic outcomes, to never question that is the height of idiocy.”

Mr Katter said now is the time to start having conversations about a new state “We are now a mature intelligent state, we should be able to question things and have a mature conversation,” he said.

“All the arguments that we hear about not having a new state are the same arguments that they said when Queensland broke off from New South Wales over 100 years ago.

“Not enough people, not enough money, etc well look us now.”

Mr Katter said that if a referendum has held tomorrow on the issue of a new North Qld state he would vote yes “I would vote yes a hundred times if I could.”

CONTROVERSIAL Independent candidate for Hill Peter Campion has decided to do things differently in the weeks leading up to the 2020 State Election.

Mr Campion has decided to go against the grain when it comes to electoral posters, which are normally a photo of the candidate with a bright background. Instead Mr Campion has decided to go for a black sketch against a white background.

“I’m self-funded and I wanted to show that I’m completely different to the other candidates,” he said.

“They like to have a nice glossy photo; I thought a sketch would be better.

“My posters are only half size, which gave me twice as many placards for the money and the black and white saved on colour printing.

Mr Campion said that black and white is the way he sees the world.

“When it comes to politics things are black or white, there’s no red or green or blue, you have black or white just like you have fantasy or reality and I’m dealing in reality,” he said.

Mr Campion said the reaction to his signs had been

mixed.

“Two of my signs have already been attacked by machetes but other people have also asked if they could souvenir them after the election,” he said.

“I’ve just asked that people wait until after October 31.”

The photo that is featured on the placard was actually just a selfie that Mr Campion took of himself, and then applied a filter to make it it look like a photocopy.

Mr Campion has printed on both sides of is placards, with the words “get off our back” printed on back.

“A lot of people see the back of the poster on their return trip,” he said.

Mr Campion has also printed out four (nearly) full-size cardboard cut-outs that he has placed around the Hill electorate. The four life-size cut-outs are at Mission beach, Innisfail, Tully and one is outside Woolworths at Atherton.

“I’m a one man show and I can’t be at all the polling places, instead I have printed cardboard cut-out that has me holding the how to vote card.”

Three fatalities in three days LAST week was a horrific week for the Far North with three unexpected and tragic deaths in just three days.

Kelly Yendle died in a headon collision with a truck north on the Mulligan Highway at Southedge on Monday afternoon (October 19).

The 39 year old Walkamin woman was behind the wheel of her Volkswagen with her four-year-old son in the back when it collided with a southbound sugar truck.

She was critically injured at the scene and died several hours later in Cairns Hospital, while her son was flown to Townsville Hospital with serious head injuries, but is now in a stable condition.

It’s believed that neither of them were wearing seatbelts.

Also on Monday afternoon a man went missing at the notorious Devils Pool at the Babinda Boulders.

Shannon Hoffman had been swimming at the rock pools with a friend when he went missing. It’s believed that Mr Hoffman had only arrived in Cairns earlier that morning.

Police divers found the body of the 37-year-old man on Wednesday morning, about 200 metres upstream from the Devil's Pool.

They said the body would be taken to Cairns and a report would be prepared for the coroner.

Acting Inspector Brett Jenkins said the location was extremely dangerous.

“That whole area is notorious, it is extremely dangerous, there are many chutes and deep water current areas that it can easily take even the strongest swimmers underneath,” he said.

“There had been 17 or 18 deaths at the spot in the past 60 years and people need to take greater responsibility and avoid dangerous spots.”

On Wednesday morning a base jumper was killed after attempting to parachute of a remote Far North Waterfall.

The man is believed to have fallen about 70m to his death after he jumped off Cannabullen Falls, in the Tully Falls National Park at Cardstone.

The 57-year-old was understood to have been with four others when they performed the banned jump.

The group were carrying an EPIRB and emergency services were called about 10.45am on Wednesday when it was activated Cairns police Acting SenSgt Rod Stanley said it was believed several members of the group successfully made the jump, but the deceased man suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The remote falls are off an unsealed road about 25km from Millaa Millaa.

Fencing cassowaries in FOLLOWING the removal of cassowary warning signs on the Kuranda Range by Transport and Main Roads (TMR), a local conservation group has decided to take matters into their own hands to try and protect the local cassowary population.

Earlier this year Elvis the Cassowary lost four of his chicks to car strikes on a renowned stretch of the Kuranda range.

At the time members of the Kuranda Conservation group erected black silhouette signs where the birds were killed to draw attention to the plight of the endangered bird and to get drivers to slow down.

Last week TMR decided to remove the signs claiming that the signs could distract drivers from other traffic-related warning and advisory signs.

“This was due to concerns raised by road users including reports of near-misses where drivers were distracted by the signs.” A TMR spokesperson said.

Now Kuranda Conversation has decided to take the protection of the birds into their own hands by erecting a self-funded fence along the top of the Kuranda Range.

Jax Bergersen from Kuranda Conservation said they hope the new fence will encourage local cassowaries to use another section to cross or to go underneath the Barron River Bridge.

the highway, where there are 4 lanes and the speed limit increases to 80 kilometres an hour,” she said.

“We hope the fence will stop Elvis and his new chicks from accessing the road.

“We are not cutting his habitat in half; we are just hoping that he will cross under the Barron River bridge.”

Ms Bergersen said the fence will be between 600 metres and a kilometre in length and will cost around $6000 dollars to purchase with all of the building being done by volunteers.

“It’s purely to stop him crossing at the overtaking lanes, that area there is a killing zone,” she said “What we really want is the TMR to reduce the speed limit; it shouldn’t be an overtaking lane.

“The rest of the range is only 60 kilometres per hour.”

The TMR rejected the proposal to lower the 80km/h zone at the Saddle Mountain Road turn-off instead a spokesperson said they are “talking to local wildlife experts to reduce the risk of cassowary road strikes.”

Scholarship to support university hopefuls FRESH St Market IGA in Atherton has partnered with Atherton State High School (ASHS) to deliver a new scholarship program that will see one graduating student receive $10,000 towards their tertiary education.

The new scholarship will run over six years with one applicant chosen each year from the graduating class.

The $10,000 will be split up into several smaller payments over three years for the students to help front moving costs, rent, food, textbooks and other study requirements.

After establishing a positive collaboration the ASHS P&C executive have been working

selflessly for months with IGA to hammer out the details so that the class of 2020 have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship.

“We have been thrilled with the extraordinary generosity of IGA,” P&C President Andrew Dennis said.

“When we asked if IGA were interested they not only said yes but increased the donation and extended the length of the gift to six years.”

Fresh St Market IGA owner Mike Shakes was happy to give back to the community who had given him and his family so much.

“The community has given

so much to our family business over the years and it feel gratifying to also help where we can,” he said.

ASHS Principal Tony Whybird said that this scholarship will make a real difference to the life of the successful student.

“A donation like this will enable a young man or women to start their university journey without worrying about having to immediately balance part time work with full time study or worry about how to pay the bills,” he said.

“It will put the successful applicant on the path to success from the beginning of their tertiary studies.”

New Traders association for Kuranda A NEW Kuranda Traders Association has been formed as a way for local businesses and property owners to have a say in the future of the tourist town.

Earlier this year, Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) conducted a survey amongst property owners to see whether they would like to continue paying a levy that funded marketing for Kuranda through a body called ‘Tourism Kuranda.’ In June 2020, just over 61 per cent of business and property owners voted against its continuation.

With the funds that were left over MSC awarded a 12-month digital campaign to Bang Media to promote Kuranda.

But once that ends, Kuranda tourism operators and businesses will be responsible for making their own marketing arrangements.

Now a group of Kuranda residents, business and proper-

ty owners are moving forward to have a say in the town’s future marketing plans by starting their own association.

The Kuranda Traders Association first meeting was in August and since then they have elected a committee, registered the association, organised insurance and written a constitution and mission statement.

President of the Kuranda Traders Association Dei Gould said they are getting together a cohesive group of business owners and commercial property owners to create an association that will support all of the businesses in Kuranda.

“Moving forward we want to effectively market Kuranda as a destination again,” she said.

“Bang Media have a contract to market Kuranda until the end of the financial year and then after that we are on

our own.”

“We don’t just want to market Kuranda, we also want to be recognised as a Local Tourism Organisation (LTO), that allows us to get more funding and then we can join TTNQ.” Ms Gould said they are also hoping to run workshops on digital media and marketing for local business in the future.

“We want to all work together, so that from the roots up all the businesses are stronger and we can get the word out there together,” she said.

“We have less than a year to rally people and try and get some funding.

“If we don’t continually market Kuranda as a tourist destination we could be forgotten by the time the borders reopen.”

Barron Falls Trail nears completion EVEN though visitor numbers may be down in Kuranda the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) is investing in the town and getting it ready for the day that international and interstate visitors return.

The Barron Falls Walking Trail Project is part of the Kuranda Township Infrastructure Master Plan and is funded through levies paid by Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Rail to the Queensland Government under

the Kuranda Infrastructure Program The Barron Falls Walking Trail comprises of two parts.

Stage 1 – A link trail from the Kuranda Jungle Walk to the end of Weir Road.

Stage 2 – A link through Barron Gorge National Park from the end of Weir Road to the Barron Falls car park area.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said the new walking trail connecting the

Kuranda township with the Barron Falls lookout will offer visitors to Kuranda a link between Jum Rum Creek Conservation Park and the Barron Gorge National Park, alleviating foot traffic on Barron Falls Road.

“The Barron Falls Walking Trail will be a breathtaking experience for locals and tourists to explore world heritage rainforest,” Mayor Toppin said.

This project and the new wayfinding signage that will be installed later this year, are both funded through the Kuranda Infrastructure Fund.

Kuranda residents are also advised that upgrade works are taking place to the existing Jum Rum and Jungle Pedestrian walk. The scope of works will necessitate the closure of sections of the pathway as the project progresses, with no pedestri-

an access through or past the active work site – effectively closing the circuit to pedestrian through traffic.

The upgrade works require the installation of a new asphalt surface overlay including replacement of existing step units and general infrastructure maintenance and replacement as required.

The works are expected to be completed by the end of 2020, weather permitting.

Academic achievements awarded ST Stephen’s Catholic College (SSCC) celebrated its students’ academic achievements last Thursday with their annual awards ceremony held in the new Holy Spirit Centre.

Students from grade 7 to 12 were rewarded for all of their hard work during 2020 with a special parade that was attended by parents and community members.

LNP to declare amazon frogbit a noxious weed

LNP Candidate for Cook Nipper Brown announced that an LNP Government will declare Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) a noxious weed and contribute $10,000 to its eradication from local waterways.

Mr Brown said that declaring

Amazon Frogbit a noxious weed is essential in order to eradicate it from choked local waterways, including the Atherton Creek.

Mr Brown hopes to work with Muluridgi Rangers to clear the invasive weed.

Amazon Frogbit is used in

fish ponds, aquariums and water features, but develops rapidly and can quickly choke waterways if introduced. Juvenile plants are carried by currents and quickly spread to other waterways.

It is suspected a fish tank was dumped into the Atherton creek around three years ago.

“If we don’t stop it now, it will spread into the Barron and Mitchell River areas,” Mr Bown said. By that stage it will be too late.”

The weed is banned in New South Wales and Western Australia, and is a declared noxious weed in Victoria.

The LNP’s plan to build a stronger economy means more investment in regional communities and eradicating pests and weeds.

Cape York NRM celebrates 10 years on land THE tenth birthday of Cape York Natural Resource Management (NRM) was celebrated on Saturday, October 10.

The 10 year growth of NRM started on October 11, 2010 when Bob Frazer commended as the inaugural CEO and sole employee.

Tolga Lions back in community

AFTER years of sausages sizzles and cake stalls, Tolga Lions made the tough decision to fold the service club due to a lack of members. They also had to decide what to do with the money they had raised over the years.

Putting their hard raised funds to good use for the community, the club decided to build a shelter and a BBQ next to the Tolga Tennis Courts and donate the facility back to the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) for the public to be able to use.

Treasurer of the Tolga Lions club Val Kennaugh said it took over a year of planning and negotiations to get the BBQ and covered area finished.

“We put the plans into council about a year ago,” she said.

“Once we closed down we didn’t want the money just sitting in an account.

“The whole project cost us about $18,000 and took about two months to build.”

In a turn of events, good news has come out of building the new BBQ area.

“Since starting the build, we (Tolga Lions) have received a few new members,” said Val. “We thought we didn’t have enough members to run our fundraising activities, sometimes we were down to two members working in our kitchen.

“But now we have enough members to continue going for a while, so we will keep going now for as long as we can.”

TRC residents reminded of water restrictions RESIDENTS of Mount Garnet are being reminded to watch their water use as the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) admitted that their water systems were struggling to keep up.

“Residents are asked to consider

how much water they’re using and ensure they’re only turning taps on for essential activities,” a TRC spokesperson said.

Tablelands residents are also being reminded that Level 2 water conserva-

tion measures are in place across the region.

Sprinklers are permitted from 6am to 7am and 6pm to 7pm at odd numbered houses every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. While even numbered

houses are permitted every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

EACH year, schools from all over Australia spend a week celebrating books and last Wednesday, October 21, students at St Thomas’s School in Mareeba got the chance to dive deep into their fantasy worlds with their annual Book Week parade.

The highly anticipated event sees students dressing up as their favourite characters from their favourite books.

This year’s theme was, Curious Creatures, Wild Minds and saw students dressing up as pirates, dragons, princesses and even a piece of coral.

RURAL children from five small schools came together for a day of fun and learning as part of the Gulf Kids Day. Held at Mutchilba State School on Friday, October 16, the day saw more than 100 children from Mutchilba, Chillagoe, Irvinebank, Mt Molloy and Walkamin State Schools gathered for the first time event.

The Northern Gulf Resource Management Group coordinated the fun filled day with presenters from Earth Mumma, Circus with Purpose, Healing Arts and Drum Up Cairns providing fun healthy lifestyle activities.

building a smoothy garden and then enjoyed the fruits of their labour with a smoothy tasting activity.

Kids also got some physical activity with Yoga being taught under the shady trees and hula hooping, balancing and spinning getting kids moving and connecting.

The students also learnt from Jeff at Drum up Cairns who had the children breaking out in rhythm that put lots of smiles on faces as they drummed away.

Vickie Mylrea, the Indigenous Partnerships Officer from Northern Gulf resource Management group, said that the event was a healthy

kids networking day for the schools that are part of the remote food gardens network.

“It gives teachers and students an opportunity to learn from specialists that the small rural schools wouldn’t normally have access to,” she said.

The Principals from the various schools hailed the day a success and plans are already afoot for a 2021 event.

Gulf Kids Day is part of Northern Gulf’s Remote Kitchen Gardens Program and is funded by the North Queensland Public Health Network.

Katter calls for more cattle in Cape York THIS week the Katter Australia Party (KAP) announced that if they get the balance of power in this week’s state election they will be bringing cattle back to Cape York.

According to numbers supplied by the KAP, cattle numbers have decreased from about 400,000 head to less than 100,000 over the past 20 years.

KAP leader Robbie Katter said he is working with KAP Candidate Tanika Parker to try and get cattle back on the cape.

“This is one issue that nobody is talking about and it could be an economic salvation for the cape,” he said.

“All the land is locked up in environmental green tape and that’s what we plan to attack, there is an ongoing encroachment by the government on private enterprise by stealth.

“The government is pandering to the environmentalists down south and we want to put it back on the agenda.”

Mr Katter claims that 20

years ago there were 45 private cattle properties on the cape and now there are only 22.

“Some properties have also been handed over to indigenous groups under a joint management plan but environmental overlays have constrained grazing,” he said.

“We are advocating that we remove environmental conditions and green tape that is constraining grazing.”

Mr Katter said another reason for the lack of cattle on the cape was due to the government encouraging carbon credits.

“There has been talk that carbon credits and cattle can be complementary, they are not complimentary at all, I’ve been up to the cape and seen it firsthand,” he said “The cool burns are thickening up the country; the country is now becoming unproductive.”

Mr Katter confirmed that he was not in favour of cool burns across the cape even though

there are some indigenous communities and groups that are in favour.

“There are some indigenous groups that are in favour of cool burns, but that’s because they see short term jobs, you can have two people doing a burn or 20 people running a station,” he said.

“Station owners would benefit environmentally and economically from cattle returning to their land rather than cool burns or carbon credits.

“The people who are making these decisions live hundreds of thousands of kilometres away and they don’t understand the country or the culture up there.

“Carbon credits are just an environmental agenda being run from the cities and we are the sacrificial lambs and first Australians are being denied the opportunity to run pastoral activities.”

TABLELANDS farming families are taking a free course on Sustainable Resources and Business Management offered

by Terrain NRM. The two part land management project is looking at things that happen outside of the paddock for local farmers including soil health and holistic grazing

changes.

The course is a part of Terrain NRM’s Upper Johnstone Integrated Project and the Herbert River Gully and Grazing Program.

Both of these projects are focused of working with landholders to repair erosion, improve the land and reduce the amount

of sediment flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.

Kairi Grazier Kellie Evans says the course is a natural sequel to others focused on improving soil health and adopting natural grazing practices.

“Soil health and holistic grazing changes are one part of a transition, we also need to be

ORGANISERS have hailed the Tablelands Folk Festival a success after COVID restrictions made it seem like the event may not take place this year.

Organisers made it a purely Queensland affair as interstate musicians couldn’t get across the border and then due to social distancing ticket numbers and venue sizes had to be reduced.

But with 1000 ticketholders, 130 shows with 100 performers spread across eight different venues, President Michael Hodgkins said it was one of the most mem-

orable festivals that they had ever had in Yungaburra.

“There were a few people wiggling in their seats but overall all of the ticketholder’s and visitors stayed in their seats and kept it a COVID safe event,” he said.

“The highlight was how well behaved everybody was, the police came to visit us a few times to make sure we were sticking with the COVID regulations and they gave us the thumbs up every time, despite no dancing everyone was having a great time.

“The festival was an absolute

The fabulous Hillbilly Goats were the grand finale of the 2020 Tablelands Folk Festival and just as they finished the heavens opened up as wind, lighting and hail ripped through the tiny Tablelands town of Yungaburra.

“Right at the end of show at 5pm it thundered down, we had hail, lighting and some of the tents got blown down,” Mr Hodgkins said

Despite the hailstorm Mr Hodgkins said planning is already underway for next year’s event “We are now planning for next year’s event, as people are already asking if they can buy tickets to next year’s show in case they miss out.”

At 6pm Queensland Police declared that the Gillies Range was closed due to fallen trees and was not reopened until after 8.30pm, causing several hours delay for people trying to get back home via the range.

AFTER a plethora of promises by both the major parties, we could do with an election every six months, that way we may see some stimulus in spending at least. Every time an election comes around the amount of money splashed around is nothing short of breath taking. The day after, the electorate gets or sees nothing for three years.

Deb Frecklington (LNP) has pledged she will get Queensland working again, pity she made such a botched job of it when she was part of the Campbell Newman government. With a 60 + seat majority they didn’t last more than 1 term. How come the LNP lost all 4 seats in Far North?

Promises, promises most never see the light of day.

What does see the light of day is the more than generous salary packages our polies receive and of course their jackpot retirement superannuation wind falls.

In early May of 1961 my father, sister and I were returning to Laura Station from Julatten when we came across an unusual roadkill. I remember the day well as it was just after the monsoonal season with the peninsular road accessible and I was just short of eight years old, returning home from school at the commencement of the May Holidays as our schooling semester was then known.

On this particular late afternoon we were travelling the dirt track towards Laura across Butchers Hill, now known as Lakeland when my father suddenly pulled over, curious about the dog-like creature lying dead by the roadside.

We all got out to examine the animal and I remember my father telling us it looked like a Tasmanian wolf (now better referred to as the Tasmanian tiger or Thylacine).

I recollect it was about the size of a medium thickset dog with an unusually box shaped head not large for its size, and a long and rather thick proximal tail that tapered off at the end. Its most outstanding feature was its mid tan colouring with vertical stripes partially circling its rear torso.

It was unfortunate for this animal to end up as a road static as vehicles then along this road were far and few

between and anyone hitting it most probably may have thought it was a dingo.......

Unfortunately we had no camera and no thought of collecting the animal for its pelt.

It was the talk of the evening when we arrived home.

Some years before local identity Percy Trezise passed away, I had a conversation with him as he too believed in the Thylacine having allegedly seen them around Jowalbinna near Laura.

Recent interest in their existence has been raised but as much as I would dearly love a ‘live’ encounter, for my part I hope the Thylacine remains elusive as scientifically based evidence of its existence if proven, would only create mayhem not only locally, but internationally.

Water rights

MY name is Peter Gargan and I was from Springmount Station. In about 1993 I prosecuted the State of Queensland in the Supreme Court in respect of the water rights that were attached to every farmers land.

What I did not know at the time was that the Nationals in 1984 had taken the Queen out of Queensland, by omitting the Coronation Oath 1688 (Imp) from the Imperial Acts Application Act 1984, (Q) and so the Supreme Court was no longer as Her

Delegate bound by Her oath.

In 1989, the then Nationals compulsorily acquired all water rights, under the Water Resources Act 1989, but lost government the same year.

In the Water Act 2000 S 26 the State declared that all water rights, including rain water vests in the State. This is pure communism, and if the Coronation Oath 1688 (Imp) was still accepted as law which it must be, could not have received Royal Assent and the Supreme Court could have declared it invalid.

Without the Coronation Oath 1688 (Imp) no one knows what Allegiance to Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second means. It means the separation of Church and State is complete. The Crown is not the State and the State is not the Crown. The Crown is not just Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, it is a separate and independent Corporation Sole, from the Corporation Aggregate that is the State, governed by the Coronation Oath 1688 (Imp). Without it corruption reigns supreme.

Two Parties have a chance to fix it this election. Katter’s Australian Party with three sitting members and a possible 13 after October 30th, and the Nationals. The Nationals or Katter’s Australian Party may win Cook, and Katter’s Australian Party is almost certain to win Hill and its two other seats.

Palmer gave Anastacia Palaszczuk government in 2015, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation in 2017, but this time are acting responsibly, and The Liberal National Party will listen if Katter’s Australian Party wins Cook, and probably will anyway, if it wins Cook and return the freedoms we had until 1984, back to the people of Queensland by giving us back a real Queen, as we are entitled to.

The borders should open on the Monday after the election, if the Australian Labor Party is defeated under S 92 Constitution and our wonderful Far North Queensland can welcome visitors again from everywhere in the Commonwealth.

IT’S concerning to me that as we race into the home straight of the 2020 Queensland State Election, just how many candidates still don’t have their s..t together.

I would like to think that some of the pre-requisites for sitting in parliament would be organisational skills, a high attention to detail and an interest in meeting constituents.

On Wednesday, October 21 The Express Newspaper in conjunction the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce invited candidates for the seat of Hill to participate in a meet the candidate’s event.

We gave the local candidates nearly two weeks’ notice but on the day of the event several candidates were still unsure if they could attend and some couldn’t even bother RSVP’ing after several requests went unanswered.

One was even upset that we wouldn’t allow them to have somebody to stand in for them on the night due to their being unavailable.

On pages 4-5 you will notice that in the interests of being fair, we gave all candidates the opportunity to write 100 words on why they should be the candidate for Hill or Cook, you can see on the pages which ones couldn’t be bothered responding to our requests even after several reminders.

Over the past few weeks we made attempts to speak to or meet all the candidates running, it’s something I’m afraid to say we haven’t been successful at, hearing excuses like “I’m too busy, can you email me or you need to go through my media

team.”

We also have several candidates who don’t live their chosen electorate and even one who is yet to step foot in FNQ . My personal favourites are the ones who have admitted to not having a social media presence, or access to a working phone or email.

If the above candidates think they are busy now, what do they think is going to happen if they are voted into parliament?

The sign of a good local member is one who you can touch base with, who is there for their local constituents and one who has a grasp of basic communication and technology.

If they can’t be bothered meeting you or answering basic emails or requests how will they be when they have to spend half their life in Brisbane and they have hundreds of people pulling them in every direction?

Sure policies count when running for government but what good are those policies if someone we vote in doesn’t even know how to answer their own emails or return a phone call?

I’m really sad this election has shown just how incompetent some of the potential candidates are at everyday life. Being a local member should be a privilege not something done on a whim or as a lark.

If they can’t handle the pace three weeks out from the election how will they handle the next three years?

If they are not giving 100 per cent now, god help us if they get into office.

Speedway Madness on Halloween MAREEBA Speedway will once again come alive with the sounds of Saturday night racing with their Halloween Sprint Car Spooktacular and Super Street Sedan Title on this weekend, October 31.

Returning for some adrenaline pumping fun is Dean Dalgeish from Townsville who will be looking to keep his Super Street Sedan Title and become a two time champion.

Even though Dean hails from Townsville the amount of time he has spent at the speedway and the meets he has attended he has been dubbed a local by the local racers.

Dean will be racing in his VL commodore which is currently in the best condition it’s ever been in.

“Everybody said I fluked it

so I’m here this year to prove them wrong,” he said.

“The car has never been this good it’s 100 percent this year.

“I’m racing this year and trying to win for my dad and my newborn.”

The Mareeba Speedway is one of Dean’s favourite speedways to race at and he barely misses any meetings.

“In the past seven years I’ve only missed about eight meetings at Mareeba,” he said.

“It’s going to be worth watching there are some new drivers but there are also some returning drivers who have been involved since the 80’s.

“We don’t get tow money or prize money so we do it because we love the class and the people there.”

Waters races through competition MAREEBA local Liam Waters has lapped his competition taking out one championship and one state title after his latest race in October.

The 16 year old journeyed down to Warwick over October 10 and 11 to compete in Round 4 of the Queensland Road Racing Series in the F3 category with him coming out on top and bringing home the win.

Taking out first place for three races and claiming second in another gave Liam enough points to win the round and take

from him for the last lap and I just kept thinking, just take it easy.

“When I went across the line I was relieved but I was also disappointed knowing it was over for the year.”

With consistent training Liam was able to progress quite quickly despite only starting to race three years ago.

Now with his sights set on the Japanese circuit next year, Liam will be back in the racing seat preparing for his overseas competition.

When crossing the finish line in his last race Liam felt overjoyed and disappointed at the same time, realising he had finished his last race of the season.

“I was sitting behind the guy who was second in the championship and I could’ve took second but I said no, I want to win this race,” he said.

SPORT Bulls look to Edge the Hill A SOLITARY goal in the seventy first minute was enough to send the Mareeba Bulls into the 2020 FNQ Football grand final this Saturday.

With such a young side, the preseason aim was to just reach the top four.

“The boys did so well tonight, I never thought we would get to the final this year as it is a building period for the club,” said an emotional Coach Ang Tatti after the game on Saturday night against Leichhardt.

“We lost both of our regular fixtures to the Lions during the course of the season and for us to win here tonight in their back yard is just amazing.

“We didn’t adapt to the man down at all in the first half, in fact Leichhardt adapted better, but our defence was outstanding tonight, the second half was much better.

“We’re going to savour this moment, we are over the moon about making the grand final and we will think about Edge Hill tomorrow.

“They’re a champion team without doubt; we are going to give it 100 percent.

“They are beatable, we just have to perform, work hard and take our opportunities and it’s a final so anything can happen. “We really would like to stuff up their season with a win in the final.” Coach Tatti said.

Leichhardt went down to 10 men with just five minutes on the

clock when a straight red card was shown to Cody Eszes for swearing at the linesman.

The Bulls controlled the match there after but were unable to show composure in front of goal and squandered many opportunities to go ahead.

The goal came in the seventy first minute through Solomon Island international Richard Fono who lashed upon a defensive error to give the Bulls the lead, much to the delight of the travelling supporters.

In other matches featuring Bulls teams the Premier Youth came unstuck with a 3-0 loss to Edge Hill United while the Premier Ladies found it tough against Leichhardt going down 2-0 in sweltering conditions.

A date with destiny awaits five Bulls teams this weekend with both the Premiers and Premier Reserves playing Saturday night.

The under 12 Division three come up against Stratford while the under thirteen/fourteens kick off at 12.30pm.

On Friday night the Mareeba Men’s Second Division come up against Marlin Coast Rangers in their grand final match up.

All matches will be played at Endeavour Park in Cairns.
