Mareeba sporting groups celebrate after the grant was announced on Sunday.

Community Cabinet in full swing at the Mareeba International Club.

Communtiy Cabinet delivers boost to Mareeba By Carl Portella Mareeba turned on one of its 300 sunny days of the year on Sunday November 30, as the town welcomed ministers for the final community cabinet meeting of 2014. Among strict security, wind farm and Lock the Gate protesters were unable to enter the grounds of the Mareeba International Club as ministers met with locals to discuss their concerns. Earlier in the day minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul langbroek, announced facilities at state schools across the state would be open to the public as part of the open schools policy. This means that sporting fields, courts, multipurpose halls and even auditoriums can be used by local community groups. Mareeba State School Principal Mandy Whybird said “This is wonderful news because the school always priorities having close community partnerships and this makes things clear as to how we can make our wonderful facilities available to the community.”

The real boost to the Mareeba community came when Minister for Sport and Recreation Steve Dickson, announced to an excited public at Firth Park that they were successful in securing $420,000 in funding as part of the ‘Get Playing Plus’ grant program, for the first stage of the Community Bank Recreational Precinct, subject to approvals. “This program provides assistance to councils and community not-for-profit sport and recreation organisations to identify, develop and deliver high-need infrastructure projects, to support the development of facilities that will increase participation.” said Mr Dickson. Gilbert Teitzel, chair of the Community Bank Recreational Precinct Reference Group said, a huge thank you to Member for Cook David Kempton, who lobbied the State Government for funding. “Planning for the first stage can now take place and we look forward to working with the sporting groups involved to realise the dream of having a sporting precinct that the whole community can enjoy.”

“This will allow key sporting clubs to grow their sports to the next level with the view to attracting district and regional tournaments to Mareeba,” Mr Teitzel said. Premier Campbell Newman addressed the gathering of Ministers and locals at the Mareeba International Club before they had the opportunity to speak directly to the Ministers one on one, raising individual issues. Ministers heard over 200 deputations from individuals and organisations, including the Tableland Regional Council and the Mareeba Shire Council. Prior to their cabinet meeting on Monday morning, December 1, Premier Campbell Newman and Education, Training and Employment Minister, John-Paul langbroek, announced the apprentice pledge. This pledge will see employers receive $5000 per annum for keeping on school based apprentices for the term of their apprenticeship after completing school. A further 10,000 apprenticeships will be offered to employers across the state to take advantage of this incentive.
