MESSAGE
Nick Trompf PRESIDENT
Welcome to the second annual Tablelands Better Beef Open Day, on Sunday, August 16.
Custom Meats has enabled the committee to invest in growing the event and expanding its promotion.
The inaugural event in 2019 saw large numbers of beef producers travel around the Tablelands, despite wet and windy weather.
Also thanks to ANZ Bank for providing $500 as a prize for one lucky visitor who attends the Open Day (make sure you complete your registration at each property you visit to be in the draw).
The feedback we received from both stud participants and attendees was overwhelmingly positive. We are delighted to confirm new participating studs who join the Open Day for the first time in Reedybrook B Brahman, Millstream Brangus and Gadgarra Murray Grey studs. A big thank you to the six major sponsors who have come on board businesses all committed to growing the beef industry on the Tablelands. The support of Malanda Rural Supplies, Tableland Fertilisers, Top Stock Agencies, Nutrien, Tableland Veterinary Service and Cross
This official guide is a key part of promoting the event, both in its printed form and digital replica. As president can I also extend my thanks to the organising committee for their many hours of voluntary work to prepare for the day. Elite cattle on display HUNDREDS of elite cattle will be on display to beef producers during the second annual Tablelands Better Beef Open Day this month. In its second year, the Open Day has expanded from nine to 11 studs across the Tablelands. The studs stretch from Julatten in the north to Maalan in the south and will showcase 10 different breeds. The Open Day is modelled on highly-successful similar events in southern parts of Australia.

and quality in their own backyard on the Tablelands.
Organising committee president Nick Trompf said the Open Day enabled beef cattle producers to visit a range of properties on the one day to evaluate potential seedstock for their herds.
“Our ambition in launching the Open Day was to educate local breeders to the seedstock they could buy locally.
“The Open Day last year really opened the eyes of visitors to the quality of bulls and females produced by these studs on the Tablelands,” Mr Trompf said. “For years many cattle breeders have trekked south in search of bulls when in actual fact they can source stock of equivalent genetics
“What we did not expect was for people from southern Queensland to trek north for the event. That’s what happened last year – studs sold bulls and females to people who had travelled up from as far south as Beaudesert and Rockhampton.
TABLELANDS BETTER BEEF OPEN DAY 2020
“And those buyers are coming back again this year because of how well the cattle they bought in 2019 have since performed on their properties.” Mr Trompf said sourcing bulls from southern areas and bringing them north often brought with it real challenges. “Time and again we have heard stories of people paying big money for bulls down south, trucking them north and finding they take a long time to acclimatise and in some extreme cases unfortunately die,” he said. “The studs taking part in the Open Day all breed cattle in the tropics for the tropics; and breed cattle in ticky country which are used to ticky country. “So those bulls can go out and start breeding tomorrow, adding value to the herds which buy them.” The Open Day in 2020 follows a similar format to last year. Gates on all the properties open from 9am until 5pm. Visitors are free to travel at their leisure from property to property, based on their preferences for cattle breeds. Tablelands produces great beef Continuous improvement in the quality of beef produced in the far north is a key ambition of the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day.
Owner Doug Cross is renowned for the quality of meat he sells from his Atherton butchery. “Here at Cross Custom Meats, we try to set the benchmark for quality and this is achieved by sourcing cattle from the best genetics the Tablelands has to offer,” Mr Cross said. “It doesn’t matter what breed you have, but if you’re getting good weight for age, you’re going to have good beef.” High-grade beef has been recognised as an emerging export opportunity for the far north. A major study released in June which is aimed at doubling high value food exports out of Cairns airport has identified beef as one of four key commodities with great potential for growth. The research was undertaken by renowned consultants KPMG under the auspice of economic development group Advance Cairns. “Beef represents a significant opportunity for the expansion of exports from FNQ given high
One of the foundation studs in the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day, Telpara Hills Brangus, is taking a bold leap this year with its first ever onproperty sale. Visitors to the Open Day will get a chance to inspect the 100 bulls and 36 females which will go on sale at the Telpara Hills bull development property in Tolga on September 18.
THE Tablelands is home to top level Bos Taurus and Bos Indicus cattle studs, giving breeders a range of options to maximise meat quality and profitability on their farms. The 2020 Open Day has seen one of the region’s leading butcheries, Cross Custom Meats, come on board as a sponsor.

levels of current demand, future anticipated demand, the region’s capacity for export growth and opportunities for value-added products,” the report says. “The Atherton Tablelands has particularly strong capacity for value-adding production as a micromarket opportunity for material change given favourable climate and feed conditions, resulting in highly fertile soils conducive to quality beef production.” The Queensland Government is funding a $10m export distribution facility at Cairns airport, which will be built over the next two years. A similar centre is being built at the Toowoomba airport. Open Day president Nick Trompf said beef was currently the #1 airfreight export from Toowoomba. “Here on the Tablelands, by making use of the best Bos Taurus genetics available the eating quality of beef in the far north can be further enhanced,” he said. “At present significant volumes of prime beef cuts are trucked from southern areas such as the Darling Downs into our region when the same product is readily able to be produced up here.”
Although multiple vendor sales have been held in the past, this is the first sale of this magnitude in recent times that features stud bulls and females from a single operation. Telpara’s Brittany Pearce said: “We came to appreciate that many of our best clients are located from Mackay northward, including a very good following by Far North Queensland buyers,” explains Brittany Pearce. “We wanted to create a stud sale that serviced this area and stopped the need to travel south to Rockhampton or Roma.” “This area should be a destination for outstanding cattle, and we are doing our part. The Tablelands has the potential to become another King Island in terms of topquality meat production. That starts with local producers breeding with the genetics like ours that are backed by science and designed to thrive in the tropics.” PICTURED: Telpara Hills Miss Legacy 541P73, a heifer that will be on display during the Tableland Better Beef Open Day and later sold as lot 102 in the Telpara Hills Bull and Female Sale in September.

Hybrid vigour delivers more beef
Santas on sale NEW SIRE: Futurity Nugget bought by Tallangalook for $12,000 in 2019.
A RANGE of bulls guaranteed to deliver the goods will be on sale at Tallangalook during the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day. Tallangalook will offer pure Shorthorn, Shorthorn + (25% Red Brahman) and Santa Gertrudis composite bulls from 15-33 months.
Buyers from as far as Beaudesert and Rockhampton travelled to Tallangalook to secure bulls and females at the inaugural Tablelands Better Beef Open Day in 2019. “We also sold a number of bulls locally - and the feedback has been excellent,” Mr Trompf said.
Tallangalook will have on offer the first calves by the outstanding Santa Gertrudis bull, Waco 720 (pictured).
All bulls are ready to work and guaranteed fertile, have been veterinary checked and semen tested.
“The southern buyers are returning and we’ve had plenty of inquiry in the far north too.”
The 990kg sire was bought at Beef 2018 in Rockhampton from the Waco stud, which ultimately took out the Champion Interbreed Exhibitors Award.
Tallangalook stud principal Nick Trompf said the bulls would deliver a host of benefits in cross-breeding programs across Bos Indicus females including:
As well as bulls for sale, Tallangalook will have on display cows and calves, joined heifers and sires.
Waco 720 is by Waco Digger, sire of one of the two bulls in the Champion Interbreed group at Rockhampton.
“We run a Droughtmaster/ Santa commercial herd as well as the stud and the impact of the Shorthorn bulls over those females is clear when you see the calves on the ground,” he said.
“Waco 720 is a moderate, early maturing and very muscular Santa bull with an incredible temperament,” stud principal Nick Trompf said.

Elite genetics at Gadgarra Murray Grey Stud
Gadgarra Nero at Gadgarra Murray Grey Stud.
GADGARRA Murray Grey Stud began in 1998 with just three purebred Murray Grey cows purchased from local cattleman Percy Kidd. We chose Murray Greys because of their temperament, ease of calving, strong maternal traits, fertility and (because) they are naturally polled. Since then elite genetics have been carefully selected and sourced from Murray Grey Studs from all over Australia from as far away as Western and South Australia, NSW 16 ďż˝
and Tasmania. Our strong focus on structure, high milk figures and low birth weights as well as true type to the breed, has truly paid off for us with phenomenal success in the show rings, not just at local shows but also at Beef Australia and the EKKA. Local cattlemen have been extremely happy with the hybrid vigour Gadgarra Murray Grey bulls have put into their calves from breeds such as Droughtmasters, Brahman, Angus, British Whites,
Composite and Dairy cows. Almost all of them have become return buyers. Gadgarra Murray Greys is a relatively small stud, but what we lack in numbers we make up for in quality. Grey Polls on show at Figtree
Grey Polls at Figtree Brahman Stud.
FIGTREE Brahman Stud was founded by Norm and Val Tuxworth, of the Cairns based trucking firm. They spared no expense in investing in quality grey poll genetics from leading studs. In 2015, we (Ron and Jan Collier) took over the stud after selling our New England holdings where we were large scale Angus breeders for the B3 market. We wanted to return home to Far North Queensland, which is home to the family. Figtree Brahmans are now almost 100% grey polls. We believe polls are increasingly important to the industry. The 2020 Big Country Sale in Charters Towers was a striking turning point Sale for Polls. Polls were what Station Buyers wanted and they traded at a premium to the Hornies. Cattlemen and women no longer voiced the old negative perceptions of Polls.
Fertility is of particular focus as it is the biggest profit driver of all. The days to calving interval and age of first calf are available for each female. We scrutinize this data carefully.
However poll genetics are complicated, not plentiful and present a challenge to stud masters to do it well. Avoiding single trait selection for a balanced animal and keeping a strong poll pedigree, but not staying in too close require research and

High performace breeding at Fassifern Stud
Check out the polled apricot and black Limousins on display at the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day.
FASSIFERN Limousin Stud was purchased in 2002 from the Fassifern Valley, near Boonah. We purchased cows and a bull and trucked them to Far North Queensland. We first agisted the cattle until we purchased our farm on Seamark Road, Tarzali in December 2002. Initially, bulls were purchased to breed future females, however, it was found that it was better to artificially inseminate and tailor a bull to every cow to maximize the full potential of each breeding female. Now the Fassifern Limousin Stud predominately artificially inseminates and uses a cover bull with great success. The majority of the breeding herd are French Pure or high 22 ďż˝
grade Limousins. The stud is now developing new bloodlines, including a few black Limousins. Our breeding program is strongly focused on docility, polledness, softness, muscling, growth and milk production. We pride ourselves in performance recording and being part of Breed Plan. Ultimately the EBVs of our Limousin cattle will help you make a more informed decision when buying bulls. All stud animals are sold with a Limousin Society backed Quality Assurance for structure, fertility and docility. The herd is tested free and vaccinated for Pestivirus. Herd management includes vaccinating with 7 in 1 and 3 germ tick fever. All bulls are vaccinated
against Vibriosis. The stud is now DNA tested free for Proto (Protoporphyria—light sensitivity), and all DNA tested animals carry two copies of the F94 muscle gene. Cross breeding with Limousins, increase hybrid vigour resulting in higher growth rates, increased muscling and therefore, higher returns for producers. In 2012, our daughter became a junior member of the Droughtmaster Society. She currently has 10 registered females to breed a few bulls. All females are artificially inseminated to selected sires. The goal is to breed quiet, fertile, wellmuscled progeny. Vist the quiet, quality cattle at Fassifern Limousin and Droughtmaster Stud as part of the Better Beef Open Day.

View the cattle and meet stud principal, Brian Harriman at Reedybrook B Brahman Stud.
STUD principal Brian Harriman, is a third generation cattleman, born and bred at Reedybrook Station. Reedybrook B Brahman Stud moved onto the Tablelands last year when the family station sold, however the unwavering focus on quality remains unchanged and manifests itself in the foundation herd and the quality of bulls currently in use. Little expense is spared when purchasing stud stock including Ooline, NCC, Lanes Creek, Palmvale, Peter Tuxworth, Lancefield, Elmo and Fenech Brahmans to name a few. 24 ďż˝
Reedybrook B Brahman Stud is a local Tablelands based red brahman breeder, offering registered bulls, herd bulls, commercial heifers and registered heifers for sale, when stock is available, and is also represented at larger breed specific sales such as Big Country. With two properties close to Millaa Millaa and third property on the East Palmerston, the stud is centrally located with convenient access for primary producers to view and purchase paddock ready stock. We aim to produce bulls that can be put into work immediately and
maintain their condition. The cattle are acclimatised to the Tablelands which means they do not have to go through the adjustment period that inadvertently sees them lose significant condition, which affects their performance and reduces profitability. Decades of commitment and dedication is seen in the quality of the BAH branded cattle that Brian Harriman brings to the market in the Reedybrook B Brahman Stud. Millstream Springs specialises in high quality genetics to deliver stunning and quiet bulls. Come along to the Open Day and to view the Bulls and meet farmer, Brett Scott.
Millstream Springs Cattle Co, opens their gates to Better Beef Open Day with their first offering of Stud Brangus Bulls. Millstream Springs Cattle Company with the brand of XM❤ is a stud Brangus operation in Millaa Millaa, Far North Queensland run by Brett and Mandie Scott. Starting in 2016, the business is based on the foundation of delivering high quality Brangus Cattle that are grown in a soft environment with a gentle temperament. The Scott family are raising their cattle across three locations including the key property ‘Whataview’ in Ravenshoe - Millaa Millaa, a farm in Ingham and another property at East Barron near Atherton. The family intend to be in this for the 26
long haul with the eldest son having just complete Agricultural studies. Millstream Springs Cattle Co is currently home to 7 stud bulls, 20 stud females in the core stud operations and is supported by 250 mixed commercial breeders. Carefully developed through genetic selection. The bulls for sale, Longreach, Emerald and Burdekin, have been named after the Ag Colleges that have closed around the state. It is only fitting they be remembered in some way by Millstream Springs first offering, recognising the important contribution to shaping rural Australia that these Colleges played. Millstream Springs Cattle Co starter stud is Miss Foundation, who was purchased from Upper Barron station Telpara Hills.
Also situated in the Atherton Tablelands, Telpara Hills were selected due to the similar country and ease of access to their excellent genetics. Having also pursued American genetics to push their herd along, Telpara Hill have set the groundwork in which Millstream Springs want to capitalise on, however producing a much smaller, personally handled, herd. Miss Foundation is the baseline for Millstream Springs herd, she was selected due to her great weight gains, straight backline, and graceful lines on her body. Miss Foundation is structurally sound, fit and of a beautiful temperament. Her legacies in the DNA of her calves will be an investment in the future of any buyer. 136 innovative Brangus at Telpara Hills
“There is a big enough selection that there will be a bull for every market and every budget,” says Stephen Pearce, stud manager at Telpara Hills Brangus and UltraBlacks, Tolga.
TELPARA Hills Brangus and UltraBlacks will have a huge selection of 100 Bulls and 36 stud heifers on display at Marnane Road, Tolga during the Tableland Better Beef Open day on August 16th. It will act as a preview to their onproperty sale to be held at the same location on September 18, 2020. The Pearce Family of Telpara Hills have developed a world class Brangus stud through embryos produced and then imported from Telpara Hills donor herd in USA, redefining the Brangus breed across Australia. “The ‘Telpara Type’ of Brangus is fixed at 3/8th Brahman and 5/8th Angus, for multiple generations, creating a ‘Super Angus’ with natural polledness, no hump, slick black hides and clean underlines. They produce consistent calf drops across large herds,” explains Stephen Pearce, stud manager. “Because they still have 37% Brahman content they are able to out-perform pure Angus bulls here in Queensland. TH Brangus can cope with harshness, extreme heat, 30
tick and flies and get high calving while still providing the superior eating quality of top-end Angus genetics.” So successful has this type of Brangus cattle been for Telpara Hills’ commercial clients that TH has expanded its operation to sell over 200 bulls annually, mainly in Northern Queensland, but also across Australia and overseas. Eating quality has been scientifically bred into the Telpara herd. Using ultra-sound scanning technology, Telpara Hills measures the Eye Muscle Area (EMA), marbling, and fat cover. “We originally sourced our genetic line from the Brinks Brangus herd in the USA, pioneers of carcase scanning since the 1960s. Telpara Hills has continued this work here in Australia, creating perhaps the longest history of ultra-sound selection of any cattle herd in the world. Some of the sale lots scanned over 8% marbling, which is jaw-droppingly good.” This focus on eating quality has
translated into high-demand in local area and beyond, with Telpara Hills genetics gaining a good reputation among the area’s top meat wholesalers, butchers, and restaurants. Calves by Telpara Hills Brangus are also known for greater weight gains (customers report an additional 80-100 kg compared to their pure Brahman calves at weaning) and a greater market demand, with a typical 20-30 cent premium. After breaking every Brangus breed record at Rockhampton and Roma for their bulls and females, the Pearce family of Telpara Hills have decided to hold their first ever bull and female on-property sale at Tolga on September 18, 2020. “The Open Day is a great chance to view the sale lots at your own pace and with no pressure,” Stephen Pearce said. “It’s not just the top 20 bulls that are impressive. Every single one of the 136 bulls and females is top quality. We think buyers at every budget will go home happy.”
