MAREEBA State High School (MSHS) and Ergon Energy participated in the World’s Greatest Shave on Friday, March 26.

The crew at Atherton Ergon Energy got themselves into a ‘hairy situation’, as crew members Tracey Clark and Barry Moss were brave and shaved.

Apprentice electrician Tracey has had thick waist-long hair since working for Ergon and live line crew member Barry has had a moustache since his high school years.

“A couple of years ago Barry said he would shave his moustache if I shaved my hair – I didn’t believe he thought I would ever do it,” Tracey said.

“Many of us have lost loved ones to cancer and know the heartache and hardship that families suffer, so we wanted to support the Cancer Council in their mission towards a cancerfree future.

“It felt really funny to do as I have been growing my hair out for eight years, but it is all for a good cause and I am happy I did it.

“It’s a lot cooler now and my life as an electrician in the hot sun will be so much easier.”

The team’s goal was to raise $5000 but by Friday afternoon the team ended up doubling their goal raising $10,474.

MSHS held their event at lunch time on Friday with five students and one teacher shaving their heads and with another seven boys getting their legs waxed.

President Megan Seddon said the goal of $1000 was most important.

“Raising $1000 was very important for the student council and it was a big goal that we weren't sure we could achieve,” she said.

“Our Deputy Principal Ms Lindsay mentioned a few weeks ago that if we got to our goal, she would shave her head and this became a huge incentive for us.

“If it wasn't for Ms Lindsay saying she would do it, I don't think we would have achieved getting $2,000 for the charity.”

Mia Phillips in Grade 8 said

she wanted to get her head shaved for her birthday that day with her inspiration being her mum.

“My mum did it when she was my age so that was my inspiration,” she said.

“It feels so good but so weird at the same time and it was a great birthday present today.”

Tashi Maxwell who is also in Grade 8, said they were inspired to do the shave as their grandmother has been diagnosed with cancer.

“My nana has cancer and is restarting chemo and I am going to see her these holidays and I wanted to show her she

isn’t alone in her battle,” Tashi said.

“I feel better now it’s done, and I don’t feel as anxious, and I am so happy I did it.”

Zebb Franklin in Grade 12 has been growing his hair and facial hair out for two months and says he wanted to do the shave after seeing the benefits it has for people with leukemia.

“I feel freer and cold without my hair but it's for a good cause,” he said.

The MSHS student council was able to reach their goal of over $1000, raising a staggering $2088.08.

Atherton Tennis left in the dark

THE Atherton Tennis Club is up in arms after the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) removed and disposed of their court lights without the club’s knowledge.

After a safety compliance check of the club on April 10, 2019, two of the lighting poles in the front courts of the club were identified as in poor condition with significant internal rot.

All the remaining poles and lights showed further issues including, insulation damage/ bare wires, severely rusted light brackets and an electrical box that was hanging by cables.

A report highlighted the safety concerns of the lights including fixtures falling and two of the rotting poles that could possibly collapse onto the courts.

Council made the decision to disconnect and remove all lighting fixtures and associated electrical wiring.

Repairs were carried out on February 24 to replace an electrical pole which had both the main switchboard and Ergon

attachment point and two other poles that supported lights.

Atherton Tennis Club President James Drinnan said that the club was informed of Councils decision to remove the lights but was not aware that the lights the club paid for, were to be destroyed.

“We had agreed that the two posts were dangerous and needed to be removed, and that we would like them replaced,” he said.

“We assumed that they would replace the posts and then put the lights back up, but they removed all the lights and proceeded to destroy them.

“The tennis club was under the impression that our lights were going to be left in the clubhouse until the posts were put up and the brackets replaced.”

This was not the case however as council officers not only removed their lights, but had also taken them to the dump to be destroyed.

“We were really annoyed because we played on Monday night and by Wednesday everything was gone,” Mr Drinnan said.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti said that council had failed to properly inform and engage with the tennis club on its decision regarding their lights.

“It’s fair to say that council could have done better in its engagement with the tennis club, the consultation and engagement certainly didn’t meet a minimum standard,” he said.

“The lights were taken down because after the inspection done by council some of the fittings weren’t safe, although the lights themselves were functional.

“Council made an assessment and believed that there was a safety issue but our engagement with the club wasn’t good enough.”

To rectify their mistake, council has made the decision to provide and install the lighting for the front three courts using $56,000 from the 20/21 capital budget.

This decision was passed four to three with Acting Mayor Kevin Cardew breaking the tie as Mayor Marti had to exit the room due to a conflict of interest.

The Atherton Tennis Club has been left without lights as the Tablelands Regional Council recently removed all of their court lights.

“The decision that council made today certainly doesn’t make amends for that. We certainly want to improve the way we engage with community and sporting groups,” Cr Marti said.

“The club paid for the lights they installed, they maintain the courts, they’re running the show.

“Council has gone in, done an inspection said, ‘that’s not safe we better take action’.

“We feel that what we’ve done with the tennis club is try to make the best out of a poor situation.”

The Atherton Tennis Club accepts council’s decision at this time, however, the club feels they are owed more lighting in the next budget.

As council has removed all the lights that were purchased by the Atherton Tennis Club, the club feels that it should have all those lights replaced.

“If we’re getting brand new lights and wiring and the council is contributing fund for the first time ever into the club for 30 years, we have to be grateful,” Mr Drinnan said.

“But we started off with four

lit courts and now we only get three.

“It was all Atherton Tennis Club members money that put those lights in.”

“If we can get something in writing that says at the moment, this is a stop gap measure, we will be extremely happy with that, but we still feel that they owe us to have all our courts under lights.”

The Atherton Tennis Club held a meeting with TRC yesterday, (Tuesday, March 30) to further discuss this issue moving forward.

THE Lotus Glen Correctional facility at Arriga, outside Mareeba, is well known to locals and unless you’ve been a corrections officer or a prisoner, only a lucky few have seen what it’s like behind bars.

Last week, Phil Brandel from The Express Newspaper, was given unprecedented access to have a look inside the Lotus Glen facility.

The first thing I noticed at Lotus Glen was the security.

I realised that being taken on a tour of a jail was going to be secure, but I didn’t realise it was going to be that secure.

Not only did I have to sign in, but I also had my fingertips electronically scanned by a machine straight from the Star Trek

bridge, which would be used to get me in and out of the main buildings.

I also had to list everything that I was taking in including my digital camera, license, Mp3 recorder and my keys.

After checking into the visitors building, I was then escorted into the main entrance, where I got x- rayed and my camera was searched. It was around this time that they discovered a USB that I hadn’t declared.

After a few tense minutes of backwards and forwards questioning, I was allowed to go past the main gate and into a giant air lock.

From here I was escorted by several prison staff the entire way around the jail. All the

doors must be opened by a person watching you on video.

There are no keys or locks, the image of a warden walking around with a large ring full of keys is the stuff of movies.

On the day of my visit Lotus Glen was holding 1,120 prisoners.

Once inside Lotus Glen I was actually surprised at how friendly everybody was, every prisoner or officer I walked past said hello. Every staff member that I asked questions too was more than happy to answer and show me around.

Sometimes I forgot I was in a jail, walking around the grounds surrounded by cyclone fencing had the feel of a modern high school rather than a jail. It’s not

until you see the razor wire or hear the guard dogs barking that you remember you’re in a jail.

All the prisoners wear green clothing and thongs, they also have access to white sneakers with velcro (no laces).”

Lotus Glen is its own little town, it has its own industrial laundry that does the laundry for the Atherton Hospital, a material/upholstery shop that covers mattresses and pillows and the odd piece of furniture.

There’s also woodwork and metal work rooms, as well as a kitchen, medical and dental facilities and some general maintenance workshops.

the bars residential security which is the main jail where prisoners can roam the grounds and get jobs in the above workshops or study, and then there is high security where the prisoners are not allowed out except for some fresh air in their exercise yard which is about half the size of a tennis court.

The only part I was not allowed in was the high security section.

The other thing I noticed was that everything was gray, the walls, the concrete, the fences everything. The only thing to break up the colour was the olive-green uniforms of the prisoners and the grass. The gardens are immaculate and are taken care of by prisoners from the farm.

I was surprised at how jovial all the prisoners were, there was laughter amongst themselves.

Most times I could have been on a tour of a factory anywhere in Queensland.

The other surprising thing was how many people work at the Jail, everything from corrective services prisoners, to

accountants, admin, even trade qualified builders and metal workers.

The Jail has over 400 full time employees. All meals are made in the house kitchen which is one of the most prized places to get work, as its air conditioned and you don’t walk out at the end of the day with a mouth full of dust. They make more than 3600 meals a day and this includes meals for the prisoners and staff.

Prisoners are fed their meals in plastic containers and the servings weren’t huge. One prison officer said that the meals were calorie and nutrient controlled and when most prisoners left Lotus Glen after a lengthy stay, their old clothes no longer fitted them.

The laundry has that distinctive dry cleaner smell, and it is the only industrial laundry on the Tablelands which is COVID approved, so the jail handles most of the laundry for the Atherton Hospital and the local hotels and B&Bs. In the residential security section, there are units with

four sections (two up and two down) as you walk into these sections there is a common area and that leads off to five other rooms, these are the prisoner’s bedrooms. Some of them have a double bunk, some sleep alone – I’m guessing there is some sort of pecking order.

While I couldn’t get close to the high security section, I could see about six to 10 hard men walking backwards and forward in a small exercise yard.

It reminded me of caged animals at the zoo doing laps of their enclosure to while away the boredom.

Seeing all the security measures in place I can’t even imagine the creative ways that people smuggle contraband in, or how to escape.

There hasn’t been an escape from a Queensland High security prison since Brendon Abbott in 1997.

Yes there are TV’s and a recreation room and fresh food, but this is not the sort of place that anyone would choose to stay.

I’m not sure if that was my paranoia or because I was being

escorted everywhere by big men but there is a sense of danger in the air.

All you need to do is take a short walk and you realise you can’t go very far; in fact you need permission to go anywhere.

You’re under constant video surveillance, there is no privacy and there is fencing and razor wire everywhere to remind where you are.

I’m not sure how it effects a person being under lock and key for a long time, thanks but no thanks.

Understandably the security was doubly strong leaving, again I had to have everything scanned including my digital fingerprints in an enclosed Tardis like machine.

Walking outside the sun seemed to shine brighter and the air seemed cleaner. It was like all the pressure and danger vanished. Maybe we need to start taking troubled youth through the jail as a deterrent.

Over 100 jobs up for grabs

QUEENSLAND Corrective Services (QCS) is looking for more than 100 locals to fill jobs at the Lotus Glan Correctional Centre in the coming months.

Newly appointed General Manager at Lotus Glen, Gabrielle Payne said QCS was looking for locals with good communication skills and a desire to make FNQ a safer place.

“The positions at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre range from Custodial Corrections Officers through to offender manage-

ment, sentence management and administrative support officers,” she said.

“Many people are unaware of the career paths and opportunities that QCS offers. We have offices and centres across the length and breadth of the state, offering our officers a diverse range of opportunities and lifestyles.

“There are extensive opportunities for progression and diversity of work.”

manent, fulltime jobs will be a significant economic boost to the Mareeba and Tablelands community.

“We are encouraging locals to take a look inside to see if a career in QCS might be for them. We have 101 positions available right now for locals, with paid training commencing shortly for the successful candidates,” she said.

“One of the advantages of Lotus Glen is that officers are trained in the centre where they will be working, rather than having to travel to Brisbane for the 10-week course. By the time they graduate and are ready to join the front line of public safety, they are familiar with the workings of the prison.”

Ms Payne said one of the biggest advantages of a career with QCS was the work life balance.

“Custodial officers work 12hour shifts, so they only work three days a week and then have the rest of the week off which is great for work life balance,” she said.

“It’s perfect for people who want to increase their quality of life or lifestyle. You can basically work part time and be on fulltime pay.

“No formal qualifications are

needed the most important thing is good communication skills.

“The ability to communicate with people from all walks of life and a desire to make the community a better place, is the sort of person we are after.”

TWO new murals have been put up on the fence at Arnold Park in Mareeba in the hope of reducing graffiti and anti-social behaviour.

The aim of the mural project was to engage local youths with Cairns artist, Daniel “Wally” Wallwork, during the last week of the January school holidays.

The two colourful murals have been erected on the Mareeba Police Station timber fence that

Local youths were asked for their ideas for the two panels, and they decided on the words ‘Connect’ and ‘Family’.

The words were chosen as the participants decided that’s what had become important during the previous months with the COVID pandemic and how their normal way of life changed.

PCYC Mareeba branch manager Sergeant Mary-Anne West said the two panels added to and enhanced the existing street style of art that currently adorns the timber fence at Arnold Park.

“Along with the two murals, local youth decorated and took home a baseball cap using spray-painting materials and they loved this activity,” she

said.

“Each day they had snacks, a sausage sizzle, toasted sandwiches, and other treats, with bread and bakery products donated from Brumby’s Bakery Mareeba.

“At the end of each spraypainting activity the group stayed on at Arnold Park and participated with PCYC Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation officers in ball games including basketball, touch football and oz tag to finish off each day.”

Mary-Anne said that by engaging youth in the art activities, it was hoped that they had seen some positive outcomes.

“It’s hoped that if they can produce the murals it will help decrease anti-social behaviour and unwanted activities such

as graffiti and wilful damage,” she said.

“The programs were to educate them in the difference between positive (legal) and negative (illegal/graffiti) art. This leads to increases in ownership of the murals, sense of pride in their community, along with providing a lasting community asset.

Putting these murals up stops graffiti on the fence. The existing murals have been there for over five years and they haven’t been touched.”

This is the third mural activity the PCYC has been engaged in, the two other murals are in the laneway between Rivers Clothing and Furious Fitness on Byrnes Street and on wall at the Cricket Club building at Firth Park.

MORE than 500 Queensland community groups are set to benefit from more than $12.7 million in funding from the latest round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) grants.

Successful organisations can use their funding to purchase new items such as sporting equipment, upgrade websites, to host events or develop education programs.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman today announced the successful organisations and opened the latest round of grants for application.

“Our not-for-profit organisations are the heart and soul of Queensland communities,” Minister Fentiman said.

“These grants will help these hard-working groups continue and build on their work and help deliver relevant services to our locals.

“We’ve also funded initiatives to encourage children to attend school more often by making transport more accessible; for equestrian activities for people with a disability, including competition and therapeutic recovery; to provide meals to vulnerable people, and to support youth mental health,” he said.

“If you belong to a not-forprofit group and have a need for funding for an item or project between $500 and $35,000, I encourage you to go online and apply for the next round of funding.”

Locally some of the recipients from the latest round of found include: The Yungaburra bowls club who received 30,000 for the purchase of a cold room.

Atherton Bowls Club was given $12,536.70 to install reverse cycle air conditioning.

The Atherton International Club has $28,355 to upgrade the building, while the Dimbulah Bowls Club was awarded $15,000 to upgrade their bar.

Mareeba State High School

Parents and Citizens Association received $19,600 for the installation of security roller doors.

The Mareeba and District Pony Club will use their funding of $8,000 to purchase a trailer and the Mareeba Turf Club will use their $25,448 for construction of toilets at the club.

President of the Mareeba Turf Club, Alex Malliff said the new funds would be used to build a new toilet block.

“We are going to be providing disabled toilets to our patrons and visitors, which is something we have not had in the past and it just makes us a more inclusive club,” he said.

“Without this grant we would not have been able to afford to put these toilets in.

“We put in a wishlist of things we wanted, and that was right at the top of the list and we are very happy that we have received the grant.”

Alex said they are now awaiting on council approvals before they can start building.

Atherton Show secures QLD innovation award NEARLY a year ago events were being cancelled left right and centre, but the Atherton Show was downgraded to something smaller and simpler, a decision that got them a runner up innovation award.

At the recent 2021 Queensland Show Awards in Roma the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society was runner up in the Best Innovation of a Local Event Award for their pop-up show in 2020.

IN the continuing pursuit to rid itself of unused assets the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has started discussions about what to do with the Yungaburra Memorial Hall.

According to council documents, “The TRC is undertaking a review of its facilities asset portfolio to ensure provision of fit for purpose services to the community and improve facility utilisation.

Through this review TRC officers have identified that the Yungaburra Memorial Hall is underutilised, potentially not fit for purpose, and could be disposed of with possibly limited to no impact on the community.”

Currently, there are two public halls available to hire in Yungaburra, with the Yungaburra Community Hall on Cedar Street and the Yungaburra Memorial Hall on Barrine Road.

The halls are located approximately 600 metres from each other and according to council “The Community Hall is better

utilised, having larger capacity and greater functionality (i.e. equipped with a kitchen, bar, stage and an open area for events). The Memorial Hall only has a kitchenette and much less capacity.”

The Memorial Hall has only been hired once in the past 12 months while council has paid approximately $16,000 annually for its upkeep and insurance.

Last Thursday Council voted to start community consultation in relation to the disposal of the Yungaburra Memorial hall and if no significant objections were raised, council would then seek tenders for the removal or the demolition of the hall.

Council officers said their objective was to remove the Memorial hall from the site rather than demolishing it, but if the tender were unsuccessful council officers would recommend demolition of the hall.

Opportunity for students to learn on the sea School students are now able to get a hands-on reef learning experience due to the Queensland Governments new Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program.

Set to run over three years the $1 million program will enable students to trade the four walls of their classroom for the open ocean.

Changes to services over Easter holidays Mareeba Rotarians Kevin Davies and Mareeba Lopez are looking forward to 2021 and the events it will bring.

Local groups set for year of events THE 2021 calendar is set to be full to the brim with community groups like Lions and Rotary already in full planning mode.

After a year of cancelled events last year, the groups are looking forward to getting out and into the community hosting events and bringing people back together.

Mareeba Lions is already preparing for their 2021 Metrogaine in Mareeba which will see teams darting in and around Mareeba competing against each other, and the clock.

There are also plans in the works for a Pink Ribbon Day celebration now that the Mareeba Lioness Club has dis-

banded and plans for Christmas in July if there is an influx of grey nomads.

Mareeba Rotary has already put their best foot forward collaborating with Comedy Tours to bring a sunset Skybury tour on Wednesday, March 31.

“It will be good to get back out there, this is the first steppingstone for the year,” Mareeba Rotary President Maree Lopez said.

The 2021 Field Days have been in the works since last year and Mrs Lopez is excited for this year’s event at the end of May. “It’s wonderful to get back out planning and hosting events because that’s what

we’re here for,” she said.

“Building those relationships and fundraising for good causes.”

Groups in the southern Tablelands have not fallen behind as Atherton Rotary has had its 2021 planner out and has already started writing.

Atherton Rotary President Michael Brzozowski said that the club has experienced nearly a 20 percent increase in membership.

“Were looking to involve a lot more people from the new generation, that 30 to 40 age bracket that are looking to do something and help society and finding that Rotary is a good avenue,” he said.

“It’s just bubbling at the

moment we are excited about the new memberships getting the younger generation involved.

“We are very excited for the year to come.”

Atherton Rotary and Mareeba Rotary will be hosting the Rotary FNQ Field Days at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds from May 26-28.

A walk for mental health is on the cards for Atherton Rotary as they plan a trek through the Atherton area to raise money for mental health.

“It’s all about mental health, trying to keep people strong and get things happening,” Mr Brzozowski said.

CHANGES to payments and services for Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support customers can be expected over the Easter Holiday period with changed trading hours.

All service centres and most phone lines connected to Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support services will be closed on Friday April 2 and resume on Monday, April 5.

Services Australian General Manager Hank Jongen said selfservice options would continue to be available during this period.

“You can use myGov on public holidays to apply for an advance payment, update details, lodge Medicare claims and report your employment income,” he said.

“The dates you need to report to us may have changed because

of the Easter public holidays, if you’re due to report, you can do this early and tell us what you expect to be paid for your assessment period.

“If you report after your assessment period, we’ll pay you after you report to us. If you make a mistake, you can correct your estimate within 14 days, or when you next report.”

There are no changes to Child Support arrangements however payments made after Thursday, April 1 may be delayed as financial institutions close for the public holidays.

People can continue to claim Medicare benefits at their doctor’s office or using self-service, critical services for Medicare providers such as organ donor and PBS authorities will remain available.

The COVID Vaccinations are arriving!

We are excited to announce that the COVID-19 vaccination is going to be available on the Tablelands from the 6th of April. It is a staged rollout plan so only older people, people with severe chronic illness and first responder emergency workers will be eligible for vaccination in the first few months. The ongoing issues with the Barron River Bridge leaves us with no alternative but to build the Bridle Track, otherwise known as the proposed Reddicliffe Highway. It will start on the eastern side of Davies Creek Bridge on the Kennedy Highway and has a gradual and smooth descent down to Cairns where a tunnel will see traffic pop out a kilometre and a half from the Cairns CBD onto Reservoir Road.

Solar power on the rise

NEW Data has revealed that renewables provided six times more power than gas last summer, with gas generation falling almost 40 percent compared to last year.

“Renewables are out-competing gas power stations, even in the hottest months when electricity demand is usually highest,” said Climate Council senior researcher, Tim Baxter.

“Our existing gas power stations are struggling to compete with clean, reliable and affordable renewable energy and storage,” he said.

“Gas is a polluting and expensive fossil fuel that’s on the way out and has no role to play in our economic recovery. It’s driving up household power prices, and prices for our manufacturing industries, putting the sector at risk,” said Mr Baxter.

Nationally, gas power stations provided just 5 percent of the electricity in the National Electricity Market (NEM) over summer. With gas generation declining for six out of the last seven summers.

Overall electricity demand fell by 4% this summer compared to the summer of 2019/20 In Queensland 17.4 per cent of energy was supplied by renewables whereas gas only accounted for 8.6 per cent of power generated over the summer 2020/21.

Owner of Outback Solar, Cameron De Lai said there were many benefits of going solar.

“There’s a few STC rebates for people who live in FNQ, it all depends on how many panels you put on your roof,” he said.

“Some of the other benefits also include cash back schemes and feed in tariffs, which is where you put energy into the grid, and you can get credits on that from the power company.

“It is possible to put more power back into the grid than you use and that way your electricity could be free.”

Cameron said that with the right system and batteries and household usage some people could be in constant credit with the energy companies.

Cameron said the newest trend was batteries, which were still coming down in price as they became more common.

“The good thing about the batteries is that you can make and store power during the day and then use that power at night,” he said.

“With hybrid systems, during the day the solar power will feed whatever power your using, then it will recharge the battery and then anything left over goes back into the grid.

“Batteries can also help out during blackouts.”

For an area that is famous for 300 sunny days per year the Far North is one of the leading areas for putting power back in the grid.

“Solar power can still keep converting to power even on cloudy days it all depends on the density of the cloud cover,” Cameron said.

Nate to become face of Brain Cancer Awareness Month

Mareeba’s Nate Moule who passed away in 2020 has become one of the faces of Brain Cancer Awareness Month in May.

LATE last year, Mareeba was shocked by the passing of one of its smallest, kindest and bravest residents, Nate Moule.

Nate had been battling brain cancer since his diagnosis in October 2018, enduring regular trips to Sydney visiting world-renowned neurosurgeon, Dr Charlie Teo. Four months on from his passing Nate has been honoured as one of the faces of Brain Cancer Awareness Month in May. Despite fighting a malignant brain tumour for over three years Nate only spent 13 nights in hospital undergoing surgery.

Nate’s mother, Katie Moule, was overwhelmed when asked by the Charlie Teo Foundation for Nate to be one of the faces of Brain Cancer Awareness Month.

“I was really overwhelmed because I thought our story didn’t have such a happy ending,” she said.

“It was very much an honour to be asked, it was lovely.

“We need to find a cure and Charlie leads the way in thinking outside the box.”

Dr Teo was not only Nate’s doctor but also his friend as a special bond grew between them in the years they knew each other.

When news of Nates

passing reached Dr Teo, he reached out to Katie with a heartfelt message that really showcased his relationship with Nate.

“Nate was a beautiful soul who lived far too short a life, he brought joy and inspiration to all those who were privileged enough to cross his colorful path,” Dr Teo said.

“Nate experienced more love, joy and warmth from you than most people would experience in a lifetime and that his immortality will lie in memories that he has created in everyone that knew him.

“Your efforts and yours alone kept Nate alive, with amazing quality of life for longer than any child in the history of medicine with such an aggressive cancer.”

When Nate passed last December Katie asked people to send donations to the Charlie Teo Foundation in leu of cards and flowers to the family.

This act resulted in the single biggest donation drive through Facebook ever for the Charlie Teo Foundation raising over $10,000.

To raise money in memory of Nate and in support of the kids battling brain cancer, Katie along with friends and family will be fundraising throughout the latter half of April until May with all funds going towards the Charlie Teo Foundation.

Calling all artists The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is inviting expressions of interest (EOIs) for 2022 exhibitions in their three galleries.

Councillor Peter Hodge said that groups and individuals can apply to exhibit in the Tableland’s Regional Gallery, the Old Post Office Gallery, or the Foyer Gallery.

“We’re keen to see EOIs from new individuals and groups, and we encourage artists from outside our region, as well as locals, to apply,” he said.

“Exhibition, gallery and application information are available on our website, and expressions of interest must be received by 5pm on Friday, April 30.”

Artist Rob Mian who has lived on the Tablelands for 30 years believes artists should exhibit to share their vision and creative energy with others.

“I have held at least a dozen solo and group exhibitions in

TRC galleries, and also exhibited in Brisbane, Townsville and in various galleries in Cairns,” he said.

“Exhibiting in a gallery is important to artists, especially those who work alone in studios.

“It allows them to review their body of work in a public space, engage with the public and get valuable feedback.”

Rob said local exhibitions are a great opportunity for artists to network with like-minded people and for them to feel validated regardless of saleability.

“Being an artist can be difficult at times, it requires energy dedication and ongoing passion,” he said.

“Despite this, the creative journey is wonderful and there is always something new to learn, investigate and share.”

Council calls on locals to keep Shire clean MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) has launched a campaign to crack down on illegal rubbish dumping across the shire.

Council will be targeting known illegal dumping hotspots over the coming weeks and drive a community awareness campaign in a bid to keep the shire clean.

Signage will be installed at key locations to promote doing the right thing with rubbish, animals native to the shire will be displayed with messages

of thanks for keeping the shire clean.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said it is important to report any acts of illegal dumping to authorities.

“We are very proud of our communities and we want to look after our natural assets and wildlife,” she said.

“Dumping waste in the environment rather than disposing of it in the correct way is illegal and unsightly and can also be harmful to our environment.”

Mayor Toppin said those caught doing the wrong thig can and will be faced with hefty fines.

“Illegal dumping is against the law and there are penalties in place for those found to be doing the wrong thing,” she said.

“If we don’t know when and where it’s happening, we cannot act on it, so please report it.”

Please don’t kill off Queensland’s independent newspaper revival.

Dear Premier Palaszczuk,

At a time when the Queensland government should be celebrating and supporting the strong revival of independent newspapers currently underway in our state, it appears you’re trying to kill it off.

There are now more independent regional newspaper publishers in Queensland than there has been in decades, with new papers emerging to fill the void left by closures made by News Corp.

But the new law proposed by your government threatens that resurgence and the greatly improved news media diversity it has brought to regional Queensland.

The ictorian government has recenty committed an e+tra . . million to an already healthy budget for regional newspaper advertising in that state, so why woud you consider passing a law that will cut even further the relatively tiny support the Queensland government provides to regional independent newspapers?

THE Malanda Landcare group has kicked off 2021 with a working bee on Tuesday, March 16 and with slight boost in membership.

Returning to the site where work commenced just over a year ago, they are persisting with their efforts to clear the infestation of cherry guava from the rainforest floor downstream from the Elinjaa Falls waterhole.

Malanda Landcare President Peter Arnold-Nott said as well as enjoying the help from some new members, the task has been made quicker and more effec-

tive by the purchase of a pair of Tree Popper tools, with a contribution from the Tablelands Regional Council through the TRC Community Grant Program.

“The Tablelands Regional Council has been very supportive of our project at the Elinjaa Falls Visitor Area,” he said.

“They have provided financial assistance for our Tree Poppers, and they have also assisted in the disposal of the large piles of cherry guava saplings that we have been removing from the forest.

“Elinjaa Falls is a really stunning place and thousands of

tourists visit the site every year, it’s nice to think we can assist in returning the area to better health.”

The group plans to begin formally collecting data to measure the effect their work is having on the area in the hope that this will help determine the most effective and long-lasting method of clearing the infestation.

Why do you want to funnel more state government advertising away from locally owned and independent newspaper publishers providing a critical service to regional Queenslanders to digital news sites owned predominately by global news corporations already bolstered by new deals with by big tech monopolies Facebook and Google.

The law would also be a massive blow to government transparency, with important notices such as mining lease approvals and amendments to land use only being published on government websites away from public gaze instead of being printed in local newspapers, as currently re$uired by law.

Premier, the resurgence of local independent regional newspapers currently underway in Queensland is a great thing for our state - please don’t kill it off.

Old fire truck gets new lease of life

A FIRE truck that saw duty in Cairns over three decades has been restored to its former glory.

The 76-year-old truck was stripped back to bare metal, relieved of some major dents, painted in her original ‘fire engine red’ and is now ready to re-enter service at the Historic Village Herberton.

Historic Village Herberton owners, Craig and Connie Kimberley, said the 1945 Dennis Fire Engine had been restored when it first arrived at the Village in 2013, but this latest makeover took it back to how it would have appeared on the streets more than 70 years ago.

“It is wonderful to be able restore this old fire truck, preserving an important piece of local history,” Craig said.

Back in the 1940s, the ability of the Cairns Fire Brigade to quickly extinguish fires improved immediately when this

Atherton Tablelands panel beater and spray painter, Zac Jarman of Dog House Industry had the task of stripping the truck back to bare metal, removing the bigger dents and priming and repainting it in its original shade of red paint.

“The reps at JKW Allpaints Cairns did a lot of research to find the original colour code for the paint,” Zac said.

“It is coach built with timber interiors and steel folded over the timber. I found a lot of markings that people had stamped into it. I tried to keep them as best I could. It was interesting to see the weld marks and the old school workmanship that had gone into it.

“They wanted to keep it original, so I just took out the

BY SALLY TURLEY AFTER nine years of commuting the 263 bends of the Gillies Range road twice a day, Alli Fielding of Lake Barrine, decided to look around for a project a little closer to home. She found the Altitude Cafe at the corner of Lake Eacham road and the Gillies Range, bought it five weeks ago and has been busy renovating it ever since.

Driving past the site over the last few weeks, it has looked like one constant party going on. But Alli said she has had just about every kind of tradesman working on the building.

She has completely gutted the interior, repainted the whole place and refurbished the kitchen, with the help of local painters, builders, gardeners, cabinet makers and electricians.

No stranger to the food business, Ms Fielding owns two Longevity restaurants in Cairns.

Renowned for their healthy menus, the Cairns Central and Smithfield stores specialise in

tasty and affordable food and pure fruit juices made from ethically sourced local produce.

Her new cafe, which she has renamed ‘The Gillies, Moments into Memories’ will be open seven days a week from 6am to 4pm.

Alli Fielding says she is hoping to provide commuters with a hot brekky or just a coffee and roll to help get them down the hill each morning and an atmosphere where diners can sit a while and take a moment to relax.

She now has a BYO license and is looking forward to weekenders dropping in for brunch or lunch and a glass of wine after spending time swimming or walking around the lakes nearby.

There will be gluten free and vegan options, acai bowls of fruit and coconut yoghurt for breakfast, paninis, salads and home made cakes cooked in house, but the menu will be kept fairly broad to suit the situation.

sioned by the Eacham shire and built using 10,000 pounds of government unemployment scheme funding, was begun in 1922 and had up to 150 men working on it at its peak. It was opened in July 1926 and was initially a one way road controlled by gates top and bottom.

Are you in a de facto relationship?

The answer to this common question is not as simple as you might expect.

A person will be considered to be in a de facto relationship if, looking at all the circumstances of the relationship, they have a relationship as a couple and are living together on a “genuine domestic basis”.

The most well-known test for determining whether two people are in a de facto relationship, is whether they have been living together as a couple for more than two years.

It is important to know that a couple can be living together for less than two years and still be considered to be in a de facto relationship. Most commonly, this happens where the couple have a child together, or have intermingled their finances, such as by purchasing a property together.

A lot of people want to avoid being in a de facto relationship because they believe their partner will automatically be entitled to a share of their assets. This is not true.

Charlotte celebrates 100th Birthday

BY ELLIE FINK TABLELAND born and raised Charlotte Hastie AOM celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday, March 26.

Born in the small community of Kureen just outside of Malanda, Charlotte was the daughter of a train manager, often moving around the Tablelands with her father.

She finished her education in grade 8, the ‘scholarship grade’ and moved to Tolga at the early age of 15.

Charlotte says that she never had a proper job during her youth as it was not something a lady did.

“In my time, a lot of young girls did not work,” she said.

“I did do some little work like looking after babies for mothers and doing grades on a peanut.”

She married a Tolga man Lenard Hastie, who took her in to live with him in the Queenslander home his grandfather built.

Even after the death of her husband, Charlotte lived in the historical Queenslander for 80 years of her life.

Charlotte said the secret to living such a long life is simple, you just need to keep busy.

“I started the Tolga QCAA and the Historical Society and became the State Vice President for it,” she said.

“I love to bake cakes still, so it always keeps me busy!”

Even at the age of 100, Charlotte has never felt better saying she still has her head screwed on.

“I can still think properly, my vision is okay, and I only need a walking stick to get around but oh boy am I deaf!”

RAVENSHOE resident Trevor Wellman is continuing to serve the community with his work as a Justice of the Peace (JP) more than 25 years after first becoming qualified.

Mr Wellman became a JP on July 6, 1989 while he was working for the public trust office and was required to witness documents.

“I didn’t realise at the time how important it was to be a JP and help the community,” Mr Wellman said.

“It is an incredible responsibility, and it is nice to help people out from within the community especially during their moments of distress.

“We often check forms and make sure that it is all correct.

It makes you feel better helping them out.”

Mr Wellman moved to Cairns

in 1998 and eventually made his way to Ravenshoe in October, 2012 where he continues to reside and help the community with his JP work.

“Becoming a JP, especially if you work in the public sector, is a great benefit and it helps you understand how legal documents work.

“I don’t think anyone would regret it and I look forward to continuing to do this work in the future.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said it was an honour to present the 25-year certificate to Mr Wellman on behalf of the Attorney General while visiting Ravenshoe recently.

“The Tablelands needs people like Trevor who do the hard yards and go out of their way to help their community,” Mr Knuth said.

Mareeba secures second TJ Ryan medal ST STEPHEN’S Catholic College (SSCC) in Mareeba has not been left behind by its state school counterpart as Giulia Pilat has received the TJ Ryan Medal alongside Mareeba State High School (MSHS) alumni, Liam Newlands.

Only ten TJ Ryan Medals are awarded in the entirety of Queensland and for Mareeba to have two students receive these medals is an outstanding achievement.

The medal comes with a $10,000 scholarship spread out over five years, this money is used for expenses associated with pursuing tertiary education such as housing, food and supplies.

Giulia graduated from SSCC last year and is currently studying a Bachelor of Medicine at James Cook University Towns-

ville.

“I was unsure about what I wanted to do for a while, but in year 11 and 12 I did some work experience and it really motivated me to do medicine in Townsville,” Giulia said.

“I am beyond grateful I never expected to get something like this.

“To have two people from Mareeba win the medal in the same year is amazing.”

Giulia not only received this prestigious medal but was also awarded the College Dux, an academic excellence award, several subject awards and the Amaroo Medical Bursary in her final year of schooling at SSCC. After finishing her studies Giulia hopes to return to a rural area like Mareeba and work, providing services and helping the community.

RACQ reveals change in first car buying habits

Queensland brings written-off vehicles into line LAWS governing repair standards for written-off vehicles will be updated to reduce the number of unsafe vehicles on Queensland roads.

The changes, which come into effect in 2022, will bring Queensland into line with other states.

The Written-off Vehicle Scheme was developed as part of a national initiative to ensure written-off vehicles being re-registered for sale do not contain stolen parts.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the changes would improve safety and increase consumer protection for Queenslanders buying second-hand vehicles.

"Preventing substandard repairs and rebirthed vehicles from being on our roads protects the safety of

everyone," Mr Bailey said.

"These reforms will help ensure any written-off vehicle that is eligible for reregistration is repaired to the appropriate standard before being allowed back on the road."

Mr Bailey said all light and heavy vehicles would be classified against nationally-agreed damage assessment criteria.

“These changes focus on improving processes and standards for writtenoff vehicle inspections for light and heavy vehicles and will bring us more into line with other states," he said.

“Once classified, the quality of the vehicle re-

pairs and identity requirements for written-off vehicles will be more stringent and comprehensive than the current system.

“Light vehicles, which are considered uneconomical to repair, will be categorised as statutory writtenoff vehicles and become ineligible for re-registration.

“Vehicles will then only be permitted to be repaired where they meet specific exemption criteria.

"We will also introduce a written-off vehicle register for heavy vehicles and implement inspection requirements, consistent with transport agencies around Australia.”

A NEW survey by the State’s peak motoring body has revealed major changes in first car buying behaviour, with young drivers less likely to own a vehicle before they were 25 years old.

RACQ’s survey found almost one third of novice drivers delayed purchasing a vehicle despite having a driver licence, an increase of 38.5 percent compared to last year.

Club spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said getting a licence and buying a car used to be a rite of passage, but it now appeared less important to drivers under 25.

“We know cars are more expensive now than previous years and can be a real barrier for young drivers to make the investment,” Ms Ritchie said.

“It costs around $200 per week to own and run a new mid-sized car, for example, which is often why novice drivers opt to purchase cheaper second-hand cars or not to purchase at all.”

Ms Ritchie said the survey also found those who did buy a first car spent on average $7,358 and was around 13.5 years old.

“The majority of young people paid for their first vehicle themselves, without financial support,” she said.

“Last year there was a noticeable shift towards purchasing SUVs and utility vehicles, which reflects what we saw nation-wide, where around half of all new cars purchased in Australia were

SUVs.” Ms Ritchie urged first time drivers to always aim to buy the safest car they could afford.

Automotive data sharing levels the playing field

THE Coalition Government announced last week the introduction of new legislation establishing a mandatory sharing scheme for motor vehicle service and repair information, which will come into effect on July 1, 2022.

The scheme will require car manufacturers to provide independent mechanical repairers with same information provided to their authorised dealers, concerning the technical specifics of vehicles.

This information will be provided at a reasonable price and only to appropriately skilled repairers.

ciation of Queensland (MTA Queensland) has advocated on the importance of fairness when it comes to sharing service and repair information and welcomes the legislation, which will increase opportunities for the 35,000 independent repair businesses around Australia to compete fairly with authorised dealers.

HIBISCUS sabdariffa's red calyxes go well in salads, jellies, red sauces, jams, cordials, syrups, fruit teas and wine and is purported to do everything from lower blood pressure, to reducing blood sugar levels, help with depression and digestion, assist with weight management and increase hemoglobin levels.

But for this Malanda couple, it was fond memories of his grandmother's jam and a shared desire to work together on a project, that kick-started Darren and Monique Barter's successful cottage industry, FNQ Rosellas.

Darren and Monique are regulars at Tableland markets selling the thousands of bottles of Rosella jam, toppings and chutneys they produce each year at home in their registered, commercial kitchen.

“We have made a lot of mistakes in the three years since we started growing them and there has been a lot of trial and error developing the perfect recipe.

We have given a lot of bottles to friends for feedback and tipped a lot of batches down the sink that we weren't happy with,” Ms Barter said.

“Then once the recipe was perfected, we had to work on maintaining consistency, so we could be confident return customers would not be disappointed.

“It has been very satisfying to have customers come and tell us that it was the “best jam ever – just like their grandmother used to make,” or to hear back from locals who have been told by customers happy with the product, that they “just have to buy it.

“We are passionate about our Rosella products, and it is that kind of feedback that makes it so rewarding.

“Seedlings need a lot of love and labour to ensure a good crop and that labour continues with the picking, de-seeding, cleaning and cooking of the fruit.

Usually one of us picks while one of us de-seeds.

“Darren refers to it as a ‘rum and coke job’ as we usually sit out on the patio of an afternoon, pour a drink and crank up the country music while we work.”

Covid brought its own set of problems for FNQ Rosellas.

Just as the business was starting to hit its straps, local markets were suspended and sugar, one of their most important ingredients was limited to one packet per customer.

“We just do what we can manage and I have more products in the pipeline to diversify our range. The Humpy stocks our products now and it feels like things are starting to take off,” Ms Barter said.

Told they would get only 50–80% germination from seed, Monique said they planted over 2000 seeds just in case, only to achieve 95% germination rate.

With excess plants everywhere, they decided to start

selling the plants as well as the produce at the markets.

“We packaged them in 1 litre planter bags, already primed with seaweed fertiliser and ready to go. It is hard to find Rosella plants and people were so excited. They achieved excellent transplant results and have been ringing us looking for them again this year.”

When they were doing their research around growing their Rosella crop, Monique said all the information claimed the plant was virtually bullet proof, but the couple have since found out the hard way that Rosellas are susceptible to rabbits, bugs, ants, aphids, fungus, weather variations and weather events.

“We have experienced everything except bushfire in the few years we have been growing them,” Monique quipped.

“Our first 1000 seedlings that we planted at Evelyn were cleaned up by the rabbits – there was just sticks left.

“We replanted and discovered the climate there was too cold and too windy and not suitable for Rosellas. We shifted to a more sheltered property outside Malanda and a very promising crop of plants there got wiped out by a huge hail storm.

“We tried to revive the plants with fertiliser recommended by the retailers only to discover after the plants took a turn for the worse, that regular fertilisers aren't good for natives.”

She said the Rosella was an annual plant, which they grew from their own seeds, planted in September and transplanted out into the ground in early November.

Plants grow vigorously until they start fruiting in mid January and will continue to grow while bearing, until the end of May. The fruit has to be cut off the plants so as not to damage the stems and dislodge young fruit.

Once the mercury starts dropping the plants begin dying and the whole process starts over again.

When not busy with their Rosellas, Monique and Darren, who is a builder/concreter by trade, love nothing better than singing and playing together at local pub gigs with the Tablelands Country Music Club. Life doesn’t get much sweeter than that.

More benefits from Mor Pellets

FACED with the prospect of feeding his own Wagyu cross herd, Bill Krieg of Mor Pellets, Malanda, got very curious about optimal nutrition, health and weight gain in cattle.

In association with industry nutritionists, he has developed a pellet that replicates as closely as possible, the experience of a beast on natural feed, while still achieving gains of 2kg/head/ day when animals are fed to their body weight requirement.

What Tablelanders describe as the 'protein drought,' Mr Krieg sees as the ‘protein flood.

“In this high rainfall country, up to 80% of the lush green wet season grass being eaten by cattle is water,” Mr Krieg said.

“The protein floods through their systems and out the other end too quickly. We need to slow that process down so they are using all four guts and extracting more goodness from their feed.

“Fibre is the answer, because increased fibre will dry up that flood, slow down that process through the gut and get the rumen working properly, which will enable farmers to feed less supplement and still get more return out of their high value country.

“Nobody wants their sappy weaners losing weight and going backwards during weaning.

Animals on a grain ration will gain weight in the long term after their stomachs have adapted, but will lose weight during that adaption process.

“You will notice a cow struggling to eat a high grain content ration because grain consists mainly of non structural carbohydrates and the cattle are using all their saliva to chew their feed leaving negligible amounts for the digestive process.

“Their dung will be just a wet splatter and we need to dry that up. The point of difference with this 8mm fibre based pellet is the higher fibre content of up to 45% which mimics a ruminant's natural grass-based

eating experience, delivering 'More value, More naturally' for the customer.”

Mr Krieg, who sources nearly all his products locally is using mainly cereal fibres such as wheat straw as the foundation for his cattle feed mix.

The hay is hammer milled before being combined with high protein soy bean and wheat grain, molasses, salt, a concentrate mix including rumensin, a bit of raw sugar for energy and a small amount of urea to increase the animals' gut flora.

His high protein (16% - 24% crude protein), high digestability, Demanthus legume based horse pellets that offer similar nutritional qualities as lucerne at half the price is starting to gain traction in the local market.

The complete diet, cool fuel food is now being sold through TGT Mareeba, Malanda Stock Feeds and Malanda Rural, Innisfail Stockfeeds, Ravenshoe Rural and ROC Stockfeeds, Atherton.

Before his entry into the stock-feed production sector, Bill Krieg said he has lived a variety of lives, but the involvement of cattle and some form of agriculture has been the common thread throughout. He grew up on “Glengalla” Station, north west of Richmond before moving to “Benalla” west of Backall in 1990 where he spent 20 years growing merinos and cattle.

“We produced some pretty good wool there and set up an irrigation farm and got a contract to supply the sale-yards with hay. We were lucky to get the last free Water License from an artesian bore and struck a 350 megalitre, 38 litre/sec supply that we cooled in ring tanks and gravity fed back out onto flood irrigated Rhodes grass and Leucaena,” Mr Krieg said.

He had a dramatic change in direction in 2010 when he moved to the Atherton Tablelands and bought “Lost World,” a 160 acre (65 ha) Tarzali block where he settled in to growing a few steers to sell to the live

export boats, while at the same time harvesting Sandalwood all over the country for a couple of years to supply a Forestry contract.

Deciding he needed to produce high value animals to be able to make a living off his smaller area, Mr Krieg made the move into Wagyu beef in 2019.

He started a Wagyu Embryo Transfer program with his Droughtmaster cows and once he had the F1 calves weaned, embarked on the 600 day feeding programme needed to finish his cattle. This 'need to feed' led directly to his idea of developing his own pellet making mill.

He imported a 240 tonne/ month capacity mill last July, set up business in the Malanda industrial estate and was operational by October. Mr Krieg said he has found a lot of support amongst the smaller operators across the Tablelands and although he describes himself as “not a people person” was suprised at how much he was enjoying the interaction with his customers.

That customer base includes a couple of the local animal rescue operations and Bill often has to make custom mixes for older or unwell animals to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need.

Mor Pellets offers that flexibility across the board and while they produce a 15 to 21% protein cattle feed range and a 16% protein/10.5 - 11 megajoules of energy horse mix as standard, they can make mixes to order to suit their client's needs.

A new mulch pellet for gardens is currently being trialled and is showing promising early results. The pellet is easy to apply, presents no respiratory risks to the user and stops snails from accessing plants.

“Gardeners just have to spread the pellets around the base of the plant and add water,” he said.

“The pellets swell and provide an effective moisture retention barrier around the plant.

Snails are unable to make trails

across the moist mulch surface, so 'no trail, no snail' and because the mulch is in pellet form, there is no dust created while working with the product.”

Because it is much cheaper for clients to purchase bulk rather than bagged pellets, Mr Krieg has also been working on developing a modified pod silo with a 300 to 500 kg capacity that he can supply to customers on farm for a small rental fee.

He has simply cut the top off a 1 tonne pod, welded another top on which has been fitted with a lid that can receive bulk deliveries and attached a feed chute on the front panel for easy dispensing of feed.

Bill Krieg said he has gained a lot of satisfaction from the relationships he has formed and the knowledge he has gained throughout the process of establishing his business and would continue to improve the quality of his product and the ways in which he can deliver it to his customers going forward.

A house of ill repute OVER the past month we have heard numerous allegations of rape, sexual misconduct and blatant sexism coming from the so-called hall of power – Australia’s Parliament House.

It all began with Brittany Higgins, then there was Christian Porter and most recently there were male staffers caught filming themselves engaged in a solo sex act on a female MP’s desk.

Not to mention rumors of sex workers being smuggled in, group sex in a prayer room and a group calling themselves the ‘Big Swinging Dicks’.

Ask yourself if the above had all happened at a local café or hardware store or supermarket, how long until that business was shut down forever?

In a recent press conference PM Scott Morrison said from teary eyes “I need women to stand with me” which was quite ironic because the week before 10,000 women marched on Parliament house hoping to stand with the PM, while he stayed in his office and ignored them. Scomo later said in Parliament that we should all be grateful that the women were not shot.

This sort of culture doesn’t just pop up out of nowhere, Scott Morrison has been the PM since 2018 and now he wants women to stand with him.

Is it because he doesn’t like the toxic culture inside parliament house or is it because male public servants have been caught in the act, therefore hurting his approval rating?

It seems like politicians from both sides of the house have a story to tell or opinion to share on the above issues, all except one politician. The minister for woman, Maurice Payne has been notably absent in her condemnation of sexual misconduct or rape in her own workplace.

Women are abandoning the liberal ranks in droves. First Nicolle Flint stepped down after calling out sexist abuse. Julia Banks spoke about a culture of bullying. Julie Bishop resigned after saying the workplace culture was untenable and former senator Lucy Gichuhi said that the Liberal Party needed to “stop beating up our women”.

When you set yourself up as a loving devout Christian who puts his daughters and wife first, but you lead a misogynistic, uncaring, reprehensible, and sexist government, the hypocrisy is mind blowing.

So far there has not been one arrest or even one completed investigation from the government into sexual misconduct in the house. Dear PM, the standard you walk past is the standard you accept.

It’s time to come clean on Barron River bridge Phil Brandel's opinion piece on the poor communication from the government and its bureaucracy to the community regarding the state of the Barron River Bridge at Kuranda serves to highlight the often-experienced disregard that the authorities have for the public.

Reported statements made by TMR, MP Craig Crawford and the office of Minister Mark Bailey amount to little more that obfuscation and stalling. Slow drips of information seem to be escaping from their offices over recent weeks to a stage where we now are led to believe that a few welds have deteriorated but are being repaired.

This snippet of advice only invites speculation about adjacent or encasing concrete, fittings and general cohesion of the bridge's elements.

What have the authorities got to hide and why not release the whole report?

Could it be that the repairs being undertaken are a quickfix lowest cost option to eke out a bit more life from the structure?

Engineers would have provided the government authority with several remedial options ranging in effectiveness and cost from the lowest to the highest. Which option has been put into effect?

How can the public be reassured in the absence of full disclosure?

It is an insult to our intelligence for TMR to claim, as has been previously reported in media that the public would not understand the report, even a succinct version that contained clear statements of defects.

Are they afraid of a clamour of calls from the community upon them to take a more

costly and effective fix once the truth about the condition of the bridge is revealed?

It is about time that they come clean, stop treating us like the proverbial mushrooms and prepare the public for the future, namely a new bridge or alternative route being only two of the possible options.

Fall Armyworm invasion hits Australia Like something from another planet, the Fall Armyworm landed on the tip of Cape York from Papua New Guinea one year ago and is already in Victoria, this insect pest can eat through a crop in days and can devour 350 different plants and crops.

Fall Armyworm worked its way across the world from Mexico where it devours crops and spread north through the USA and Canada, then through Europe, Africa, Asia, through China and down through Indonesia and PNG to Australia, it could not be stopped by the strongest poisons on the planet, so what can we do?

It obviously has built up a resistance to insecticides of all types and we see farmers ploughing in their crops such as Corn and Sorghum in Far North Queensland.

Growers I have spoken to say they probably will not set these crops next year, which will be a huge loss to our region in many ways.

The big problem seems to be no one can advise farmers what they should set as an alternative crop that the pest will not eat, we need crops our farmers can set and can receive of a fair return for costs.

Remember many of these crops are to feed the animals we eat every day from the supermarkets and shops, while others are for making the

Return to the Australian way of life It is quite clear to me, that the ‘Woke Culture’ and its supporters will destroy our civilisation if we continue to appease them. The amalgamation of the Liberal and the Nationalist parties in QLD has been a bloody disaster and we need a party like the old Country Party to look after the interests of country people and support our farmers, not attack them like the present government is doing.

As no society can be happy, healthy or carry on any work without being adequately fed with food that primarily has to be produced by farmers. The words written by the famous American writer William Jennings Bryan over 70 years ago are still applicable.

They are words of wisdom and I quote.

Help pass voluntary assisted dying laws In coming months, our 93 state MPs will be asked to consider a law to introduce voluntary assisted dying (VAD) in Queensland.

VAD laws have just been passed in Tasmania and have previously been passed by the parliaments of Victoria and Western Australia and a Bill has been introduced in South Australia.

The Queensland Government is set to receive a draft VAD law from the Queensland Law Reform Commission on May 10, which will then be sent to State Parliament for further scrutiny by the Health Committee before being debated later this year.

Dying With Dignity Queensland is working with other organisations and individuals to impress upon all of our 93 MPs the need to pass a VAD law to given better endof-life choices to terminally ill people or those with neurodegenerative conditions.

But we need all 93 of them to know that their constituents want a VAD law.

That’s why I am urging anyone who supports better end-of-life choices through a VAD law to join or become a supporter of Dying With Dignity Queensland and help deliver this much-needed law reform.

CLUB NEWS with Mareeba Lions Club THE Lions volunteers certainly had a successful cake stall and raffle recently raising money for Ovarian Cancer research with nearly $1,500.00 being raised.

This is such a worthwhile cause. Ovarian cancer has been dubbed women’s silent killer. It can strike without warning signs and there is no diagnostic test. Over 1,500 women are diagnosed with this disease every year in Australia.

Batteries have started coming in for the battery muster. This will be an ongoing event.

This initiative is a great way to clean up all of those old batteries that may be lying around, help the environment and assist the Lions Club fund raising efforts.

If you have any old car, truck, tractor or bike batteries lying around give the club a call and we will collect for

recycling.

Since 1996, Lions Australia has shown outstanding commitment contributing $10 million to childhood cancer research.

This effort has resulted in, amongst other things, safer and more effective blood stem cell transplantation for leukaemia patients following chemotherapy which can

lead to shorter hospitalisation and more rapid recovery.

Lions have done a lot but the job is not over because we believe every child has the right to a healthy life. The Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation was established in 2009 with the goal of 100% survival for kids with cancer.

The Mareeba Lions Family Fun Metrogaine, an event designed to get people off the couch, out of the house and have a little fun discovering Mareeba township, is to be held on Sunday 20th June at Arnold Park. All money raised through the Metrogaine will go towards funding childhood cancer research.

TINAROO Dam was full of almost 300 canoers as the Dam Outrigger Canoe Club hosted their Annual Regatta signaling the start of their season last Sat-

urday, March 27.

With teams coming as far as the Torres Strait the club was ecstatic to get out on the water in near perfect conditions.

Coral Sea Outrigger Canoe Club ended up taking the most points for the day followed by Mission Beach with a great performance by the Torres Strait team on the Saturday.

The Dam, Mission Beach and Coconut juniors all got medals for their performances during the regatta.

Dam Outrigger Canoe Club Secretary Colene Clifton said it was a good day of racing with good numbers and weather conditions.

“The weather was terrific there was no rain, it was a good day of paddling,” she said.

“The program moved quickly people were on the ball.

“It was a very good day of racing with a good standard of competition and fun was had by all.”

The Mareeba Turf Club is gearing up for a massive Easter race meet this Saturday.

Easter races hop into Mareeba The Mareeba Turf Club has geared up for another full day of racing with their scheduled Easter races this Saturday, April 3.

After the Einasleigh Easter Races were cancelled the torch was passed onto the Mareeba Turf Club who has taken the honour to host with open arms.

There will be live entertainment on the day with a water slide and jumping castle to keep the little ones entertained.

With a five-race program on

the card the Easter day out is set to be one full of fun including an Easter theme and fashions on the field.

Mareeba Turf Club President Alex Malliff said that the club is “ready and waiting” for people to come flooding through the gates.

“It’s going to be a family fun fueled day with a water slide, jumping castle and lots of easter eggs for the kids,” he said.

“We were approached by the Country Racing Manager of

Racing Queensland to host this event for Einasleigh, and we were more than happy to take it on.

“I’d love to see 1000 people there enjoying the races, that would be good that’s our goal.”

THE Mareeba Cricket Club held their end of season presentation last Saturday, March 27 with juniors, seniors and ladies attending to be awarded trophies and compete in some interclub competitions.

The day started with the inaugural Mareeba seconds vs thirds championships played on Borzi park before the presentations took place, this was followed by the ladies and junior games.

Ryan Jaszczyszyn was the outstanding junior on the night taking away the junior champion award, rep player of the year award among others with his performances throughout the season.

ON Saturday long distance cyclist Nathan Sciani and two teammates rode 250km in 24 hours through the scenic Atherton Tablelands as a part of an Audax challenge ride.

The challenge allows participants to ride wherever they wish, so long as it meets the distance and time requirements, and Mr Sciani said this year they chose their own home.

“We looked forward to having the scenic route this year instead of going down to Townsville, with the Atherton

Tablelands in our own backyard,” he said.

“We started in Edge Hill and went up the Gillies Range with stops in Milla Milla, Ravenshoe, Herberton, Atherton and Mareeba then up to Julatten to the finish line in Port Douglas.

“Overall, we covered approximately 4000 metres worth of elevation and had to complete around 25km in the last two hours in order to make the time, which was easy luckily.

“Our ride began on Saturday, March 27 at 7am and finished in

Port Douglas on Sunday, March 28 at 7am in Port Douglas.”

Although nervous for the ride, Mr Sciani said he enjoyed the stops along the way for local coffee, bakery goods and a nice massage at the end.

“We enjoyed the taste all the good coffee and bakery food along the way to fuel up on the long ride,” he said.

“Our butts were so sore by the end of it – but good thing we had a pool and massages at the end.”

SPORT Breanne sails away with two state titles SAILING star Breanne Wadley has taken out two more state championships after recently competing in both Victoria and Tasmania.

The Victorian State Championships were held at Blairgowrie Sailing Club near Melbourne while the Tasmanian Open Skiff State Championships were at Kingston Beach Sailing Club.

Out of the five races at the Victorian Championships Breanne was able to win four and come out in second in the other race, securing her second Victorian State Championship win.

Up next was the nine race Tasmanian Open Skiff Championship in some of the toughest sailing conditions possible.

With wind speeds varying from 0 to 20 knots from every possible direction it was a battle, but Breanne eventually came away winning eight of the nine races and securing the Tasmanian Championship.

Up next on the sailing calendar for Breanne is the Sail Airlie Easter Regatta over the Easter weekend.

Breanne Wadley has added two more State Championship wins to her belt after the recent Victoria and Tasmania State Championships.

NUMBER ONE: Mareeba resident Kara Trimble will be flying down to Brisbane in August to compete against some of the best cross fitters in the country after placing first in the CrossFit Allstar Challenge.

Kara lifts her way to top spot MAREEBA high school student Kara Trimble is standing at the top of the cross-fitting world after she was ranked number one in the nation for the Allstar Challenge in the 14 to 18 girls age group.

Kara only started training in CrossFit in 2016 after a friend had suggested it to her, since then she never really took it seriously until the 2020 COVID lockdown hit.

While in lockdown Kara

competed and performed well in an online competition, from then she has taken her training much more seriously.

Kara had to send in videos for four separate workouts that were judged which then placed her as No.1 in the nation after the fourth and final workout.

Now Kara will be traveling down to Brisbane in August to compete against the no.2 and no.3 in Australia in her age group.

“It’s pretty cool I didn’t think that I could do anything like that from working out at home with my three dumbbells, a couple weights and a tire,” she said.

“I’m very proud of how far I have come compared to where I started.

“I want to continue doing CrossFit it gets my mind of everything, nothing else matters while I’m doing this.”

Roosters go down by six

AN improved final twenty minutes from the Atherton Roosters first grade side wasn’t enough to save the points in their Cairns District Rugby League round one premiership match with Ivanhoes at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

In the end it was Ivanhoes winning 18-12 after the scores were locked at 6 all for the halftime break.

There were no real bright spots for the Roosters who struggled with poor discipline and this proved costly in the final summary.

Atherton had plenty of scoring opportunities in the first forty minutes but there were many ball spills in the final handling exchanges.

A come from behind effort has given the Roosters under 18 side a winning start to the new season.

Gators draw on season opener THE Mareeba Gladiators faced the Kangaroos last Sunday to officially kick of the 2021 Cairns District Rugby League (CDRL) season, coming away with a draw.

The Gladiators had been preparing for a hot steamy day in the leadup to Sunday’s match and were met with a surprise when it started raining at 1pm and did not stop until well after the game.

The game then boiled down to a hard slog between the two teams both struggling to get over the line and score.

With the weather playing a massive role in the outcome of the game the Gladiators were thrown up against the mighty wall of the Kangaroo middle and had to adjust their game plan.

After a hard battle, the Gladiators were able to tie up the Kangaroos and come away with a draw, a good outcome according to Gladiators Captain Coach Trent Barnard.

“I was able to go to bed a lot easier on Sunday night after coming away with the draw, we were aiming for a win, but

a draw is better than a loss,” he said.

“There was a lot of positive signs there with the boys, you could see the good culture coming through.

“We’re definitely on the right track.”

The game ended 14 all and the Gladiators will now be taking a break over Easter before facing Mossman at home at Davies Park.

Both the U18’s and the reserves were able to come away with wins on the back of the AGrade draw.

Down 12-4 at the break, the young Roosters powered back in the second session to win 22-16 over Ivanhoes.

Winger Tommy Cuda scored a treble of four pointers in the Roosters five tries to three victory while team mate Ryan Gallagher crossed for a double.

Ivanhoes won the reserve grade match 52-0 and the ladies tackle trial match 34-4 over Atherton.

Results from the other CDRL first grade games played - Suburbs 32 defeated Tully 18, Mareeba and Kangaroos played a 14 all draw, Brothers crunched Mossman 38-10, Edmonton downed Innisfail 24-14.

The Atherton Roosters next match is an away game against Cairns Brothers on Sunday April 11 at Williams Park in three grades from 12 noon.

Bulls bow out of Super Cup THE Bulls Premier Ladies will be forced to take a seat after losing to Brothers Townsville in the latest knockout round of the Kappa Women’s Super Cup. The first half of the match was a clear victory for Townsville with them dominating the pitch, the Bulls came out hard in the second half, but it was too little too late.

A goal within the first 15 minutes set the pace for Townsville as they controlled the game until halftime.

Townsville put the final nail in the coffin with five minutes remaining on the clock securing their second and final goal of the game.

Bulls Premier Ladies Coach Marcello Savaglio said he was disappointed with the result but was still happy with the way his team performed.

“The result was disappointing competitively I thought we were pretty evenly matched,” he said.

“We were just a bit off in the first half and couldn’t secure the ball giving off silly fouls.

“We were the dominant team in the second half we just couldn’t create that final chance.”

The Bulls Premier Ladies will now be in sharp form heading into the regular season after some difficult preseason battles in the Kappa Women’s Super-Cup. The Bulls will now host the Stratford Dolphins for the first games of the regular season on April 9 in Mareeba.
