Mareeba’s Petrina Blain was recently crowned Mareeba Lion of the Year and says she wants to carry on the legacy established by her beloved late father Ian, who also made a proud contribution to the local Lions Club.

A MAREEBA local recently crowned Lion of the Year intends to carry on the work and legacy of her beloved late father after becoming the first local woman to receive the prestigious accolade.

Petrina Blain joined Mareeba Lions two years ago as a way to spend quality time with her dad, Ian Blain, who was retired and to make an ongoing contribution to the great work the Lions do throughout the local community.

“It’s hard to describe what it feels like to win ‘Lion of the year’ as all our fellow Lions put in a huge effort,” a humble Ms Blain explained.

“To me it was very unexpected and a great honour to be recognised by my fellow Lions for what I have put in.

“After losing my Dad last year I wanted to continue with the Lions in his enthusiastic footsteps and continue doing something he was so passionate about.

“I could not have done it without the fantastic support of such a great group of my fellow Lions."

Ms Blain pinpointed the opportunity to raise vital funds to support charities like childhood cancer research as a highlight, as well as other fond experiences.

“I’ve been a Lion for almost two years and some of the best memories I have had is being involved in the planning of the overhaul of the community BMX track and doing regular BBQs at Coles and meeting and talking to the locals,” she said.

“We also volunteer for other groups like the rodeo and Rotary.”

Developers question water access charge increase in Mareeba

MAREEBA residents will begin forking out more money to pay for much needed water infrastructure upgrades, despite many having this brand new infrastructure already installed.

A motion was passed at the Mareeba Shire Council’s (MSC) special budget meeting on June 16 for ratepayers to pay an extra $196 on top of their water access charge for their yearly rates.

This money will be put towards the upgrades of Mareeba’s 60 plus year old water infrastructure that includes pipes, pumping stations, water reservoirs, treatment plants and other assets.

This $196 cost has already been offset by several state and federal grants however Mareeba homeowners will be made to pay the fee, even if their infrastructure is brand new.

Sam Girgenti, a director of Sibi Girgenti Real Estate and one of the land developers in Mareeba believes that this increase in unfair.

“We pay quite a substantial fee to get the water infrastructure installed when developing new blocks, we put in the best of the best it’s very strict,” he said.

“They (homebuyers) have already paid for that infrastructure by buying the block because obviously we pass the cost along.

“I don’t think it’s fair because where is all that money per block going?”

Currently Mareeba developers have to pay around $10,000 per block just for water, firstly to have the right to connect to town water and secondly to put in place the appropriate infrastructure.

Sam Musumeci, one of the directors of Amaroo Estate is concerned that MSC is not promoting growth by increasing the cost to live in the Mareeba Shire.

“I don’t know whether it’s fair or not fair, but is it smart,” he said.

“Is it encouraging investment into the town, is it encouraging new people to come to town, is it encouraging growth?

“Instead of charging extra for the water, perhaps if they increase their rate base, will they achieve the same outcome.

“By encouraging more people to come to town, you have more ratepayers.”

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin has revealed that if a ratepayer does not or cannot access council water, they will not have to pay the new water access charge increase.

“Every household or business that has access to council’s water supply and normally pays a water access charge is going to see the increase on their next rates notice,” Cr Toppin said.

“All who do not or cannot access council water do not have to pay water access charge.

“The increase in the water access charge is permanent.”

The Shadow Minister for Water and the Construction of Dams and Shadow Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing Deb Frecklington was in Mareeba last week, getting a chance to hear about Mareeba’s water infrastructure needs.

“It is disappointing to see the Mareeba Shire Council has been forced to take matters into their own hands due to a complete lack of support from the State Labor Government,” Ms Frecklington said.

“There are water infrastructure projects ready to go in the North, however the State Labor Government refuses to take any action.

“The State Government had an opportunity last week in their budget to fund new water infrastructure projects, and they failed.”

Main street saga continues BUSINESSES in Mareeba were in uproar last Wednesday as the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) started construction on the Post Office Centre crossing during peak business hours.

TMR has been in the spotlight in recent weeks with the number of ongoing works in the main street of Mareeba causing mass confusion due to lack of consultation.

Now, as they begin working on the post office centre crossing they have again been caught out, beginning works during the day despite informing businesses owners the works will be carried out between 6am and 6pm.

Businesses surrounding the crossing were informed that the works were beginning just a day before they commenced

“It looked like a good contract until the builder went broke and now I’m locked into the work with my house backing my overdraft.”

and were not told that any works would be done during the day.

“We received a letter the afternoon before (Tuesday) saying that there would be roadworks starting that night,” Owner of Signature Pies Brad Thomas said.

“No roadworks were here when I started work at around 1.30am (Wednesday) and then at about 8am they started blocking off the traffic and asking us to move our vehicles.

“I went and approached the foreman and I was told quite abruptly to get off the worksite.”

After a heated exchange of words between the Mr Thomas and the foreman, Mr Thomas decided to instead approach Bob Katter, Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin and Cynthia Lui, with all but one responding.

The Express Newspaper has seen a letter that was addressed to one of the businesses impacted with it stating “the works will be carried out at night and crews will be onsite from 6pm to 6am.”

After raising the question as to why works were being conducted during the day TMR said, “The majority of the works will be carried out at night with some works required during the day.”

“Roadwork projects are always subject to change, when we delivered the letters, the works were scheduled as night works.

“A small part of the works now need to be carried out during the day, the majority of the works will be carried out at night.”

Road steering committee to push on after meeting cancellation

BY MICHAEL WARREN THE Kuranda Bypass Road steering committee will now look to arrange a series of meetings and consultations with several stakeholders in the Redlynch and Cairns community following the eleventh-hour cancellation of last night’s meeting in Cairns.

More than 200 Cairns based resi-

dents were expected to attend the meeting at Cairns Showground to discuss the proposed Kuranda Bypass Road.

However, The Express understands an issue with insurance, other unexpected expenses and the inability to find a replacement host left the steering committee with no choice but to cancel the meeting.

“We, as a committee are simply

unable to pay the insurance and other costs for the meeting to go ahead,” steering committee chairman Ken Harley told The Express.

“It’s disappointing, but instead we’ll now look to have some stakeholder driven discussions with a number of Redlynch and Cairns based people.

“Make no mistake we want this road to happen, but as a steering

committee, and as volunteers, we cannot afford to pay the varying costs to proceed with this meeting.”

The push for the Kuranda Bypass Road has been gaining momentum in recent months, with Kennedy MP Bob Katter and Hill MP Shane Knuth both lobbying hard in Parliament for the road to be considered as a matter of priority.

Just weeks ago, during a meet-

ing in Mareeba attendees returned a unanimous vote to pass a motion that advised and supported the move to construct the bypass road by November 31 this year.

The steering committee believes the 19km stretch of road from Mareeba to Redlynch would take a mere 31 minutes to drive, one-way.

Mayor Angela Toppin said the fee would help offset the costs incurred with managing green waste.

“The cost of having the green waste mulched and appropriately managed have increased and while ratepayers have previously subsidised these costs, we believe a user pays model is more appropriate,” Cr Toppin said.

“The long-term costs for managing waste sites are growing increasing expensive… rather than asking the ratepayers who do not use the service to fund it, council decided that the costs should be passed on to those who do use the service.

“At the most recent Council general meeting a tender was awarded for the handling of green waste and this comes at some considerable cost.”

Visitor centre discussion delayed THE potential relocation of the Atherton Visitor Information Centre will be discussed at a later date after new developments about the matter delayed it from being raised in the latest Tablelands Regional Council meeting.

Slated in as item 13.6 Councillors were about to talk about the centre’s future before Mayor Rod Marti quickly advised that discussion around the matter wouldn’t proceed.

Mr Marti instead explained that this item would be raised again at a later date.

In other Council news a 5-2 unanimous vote saw Councillors agree to the future demolition of the old Irvine Street toilet block in Kairi.

Councillors agreed that the existing plaque will be preserved, maintained and placed in a suitable future location.

Meanwhile, Atherton International Club president Terry

Clark addressed Council to raise issues around current water charges.

Mr Clark mentioned that if parents were expected to incur increased fees for water charges for the upkeep of local grounds for their kids to play touch footy, cricket and the like, they might instead withdraw their children from the sport altogether.

Council listened to Mr Clark’s submission and said

they would get back to him in due course about any future rates assistance regarding water matters.

Lastly Mr Marti formally welcomed newly appointed TRC CEO Gary Rinehart to his position.

Mr Marti noted that the new CEO is a proud Broncos supporter and intends to be active across the Tablelands community.

Town pumped as new track opens in time for the school holidays

OPEN: Little McKeller Turner was one of many children to attend the official opening of Malanda’s new pump track.

MALANDA’S new pride and joy has officially opened with dozens of bike enthusiasts enjoying the town’s exciting new pump track.

The pump track is located at Jack May Park and is expected to regularly attract a range of different users including mountain bikers, scooter enthusiasts, skateboarders and rollerbladers.

TRC Councillor Dave Bilney in company of mayor Rod Marti and Malanda Chamber of Commerce staff officially cut the ribbon to declare the venue open.

“This project has been in the makings for in excess of 20 years so it makes me proud to stand here today to see it become a reality,” a delighted Mr Bilney said.

“I would particularly like to thank the Malanda Chamber of Commerce, who I can safely say have been dogged over the years in advocating for the project and have worked in partnership with Council to achieve the community vision for this precinct.”

The pump track can be ridden in any direction and has an excellent line of visibility for parents that need to supervise their kids while they are on the track.

TRC says the low maintenance facility consists of an asphalt surface, fibre reinforced concrete edging with turf finishings.

TRC confirmed that in coming months a new playground consisting of a ninja course along with tables and BBQs will also be built at the location to cement its status as a family friendly park.

Deb Frecklington MP was in the region last week and spent time visiting local businesses in Atherton talking about the recent State budget.

Shadow minister visits region in wake of budget

DEB Frecklington made a surprise visit to the Tablelands last week in the wake of the State budget being handed down, talking to locals and seeing where money could have been better spent.

Mrs Frecklington, who was the leader of the LNP until 2020, is now the Shadow Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing and the Shadow Minister for Water and the Construction of Dams.

She visited the southern Tablelands at the beginning of last week meeting with prominent community members and locals from the region, discussing topical local issues and the impact of the recently handed down State budget.

Road funding, water and health services were some of the issues that Mrs Frecklington believes were overlooked in the recent state budget in relation to the Tablelands.

“We’ve got a $6 billion road maintenance backlog in Queensland and that is obvious now where you see the lack of extra road funding that should be coming into this region,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“There is no money in the budget dedicated to increasing the water in this region for the agricultural producers.

“I was very disappointed for this region like many regions in

Queensland that there is not the support for the health services.”

MORE WATER FOR TINAROO Water availability and quantity has been a big issue for many on the Tablelands for several years and was broached to Mrs Frecklington during her visit.

“The major issue is that we have a full allocation from the Tinaroo Dam and there is no water plan from the Palaszczuk Government for what we’re going to do going forward,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“All of the water proposals need to be looked at, I’ve discussed the North Johnston with the council and the Three Weirs proposal as well.

“The schemes need to be feasible, they need to have an outcome but more importantly we need the State Government to get behind a scheme that will mean more water into Tinaroo.

IMPROVED HEALTH SERVICES IS VITAL Mrs Frecklington has thrown her support behind the many voices pushing for the Mareeba Hospital to have its own dedicated dialysis unit and is unsure as to why the new Atherton Hospital redevelopment is not adding any more beds.

“Mareeba needs dialysis, there is no funding in the budget for it,” she said.

“Here (Atherton) whilst we

welcome the new build of a hospital there is no new beds.

“We’ve got a brand-new hospital being built with the same number of beds that the old hospital has… it just doesn’t make sense.”

KURANDA BYPASS OF ‘NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE’ The Kuranda Bypass Road is another issue that Mrs Frecklington has been keeping a close eye on in the past couple of months and she is interested to see where the steering committee for the proposed road goes.

“The need for an alternate route is evident by the number of trucks, number of accidents and length of time that you have to wait on the range,” Mrs Frecklington.

“If we want to develop and further develop over the range inland in Far North Queensland without a doubt we will need to have an alternate route to the Kuranda range.

“It is a road of national significance, and it needs to be that but currently it’s a state road so therefore the State Government needs to be pushing and planning now.

“I’m interested to see how far the steering committee goes, I’ve already committed to talking to our shadow roads minister to get him to meet up with the steering committee.”

Help keep posties safe AUSTRALIA Post has called out to the community again to remind the community to do their part in keeping local posties safe.

They said that every work day last financial year at least three postoes were attacked by dogs while delivering parcels and letters to their door.

Australia Post’s Executive General Manager Deliveries Rod Barnes said it is vital for the community to assist in lowering the risk of posties getting hurt while on the job.

Missing RADF crew honoured 79 YEARS after disappearing after takeoff, the World War II Royal Australian Air Force (RADF) Beaufort crew A9-56 have been honoured with a memorial plaque unveiled at the Mareeba Airport.

The plaque was unveiled at an official service on Saturday, June 12 within the Mareeba Airport Memorial Park.

The crew consisted of pilot Sgt John Roland Pittman, navigator Sgt Charles Douglas Hucker, wireless air gunner Sgt Horace Evans Shying and wireless air gunner Sgt Edward Kennion Jones.

These men took off from Mareeba Airfield to carry out anti-submarine patrols along the northeast coast of Northern Queensland.

The aircraft disappeared without any prior radio signal being received and to this day has never been located although extensive searches were conducted days after its disappearance.

Family of the late Sgt Charles Hucker travelled from around the country to attend the service, including 96-year-old brother Jock Hucker who paid tribute to his brother and the crew of A956.

HOMEGROWN landscapers and even professional businesses have been left without pavers for their projects after the industry moves towards housing blocks to cope with the current building boom.

With the drastic increase in building approvals, more and more new homes are being built in Queensland and on the Tablelands, forcing concrete suppliers to prioritise.

Meaning there are less and less commercial wholesale concrete items such as pavers for locals to purchase for their own landscaping needs.

Local landscaping supply store TCB Landscape has said that there has been less and less quantity and variety of pavers coming in.

“It’s all to do with the housing boom so supply is very limited at the moment,” Manager of TCB Landscape Linden Collins said.

“We thought something was happening when the supply and colour of pavers diminished.

“It makes it hard for people who are building a house and want to do a paved area.

“I think pavers will be back up after this boom and all the incentives are gone, this might go on for another 12 months that’s what you hear I don’t know if I believe it or not.”

Pavers are generally used for outside areas such as firepits, walkways or even some patio extensions and are widely used by the public and landscaping businesses.

Tourist park approved for Biboohra A NEW tourist park is set to be built in Biboohra after a motion was carried at the June 16 Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) meeting, approving the development.

MSC approved a new self-contained campground for 127 Hume Road Biboohra, which will be geared towards caravans and motorhomes only.

Council approved the development on the grounds that an increase in demand for these types of facilities has been observed and that the land was only suitable for livestock grazing.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said that she is happy to approve this kind to development with the heavy RV presence regularly seen throughout the shire.

“We welcome RV visitors to our shire we are an RV friendly shire,” she said.

“They spend money in the shire and that’s what we want.”

The development has been approved and it is now up to the developers when to start construction on the new tourist park.

First indigenous leader for Atherton State School

LEADER: Heather Archer has become Atherton State School's first ever indigenous female school captain.

digenous leader after Heather Archer was chosen as one of the

2021 school captains.

In grade four Heather set herself the goal to become the school captain, now two years on she has realised her dream.

Heather has become the first ever indigenous leader of Atherton State School and their first ever female indigenous leader, in one fell swoop.

Heather’s mother, Timeah, is incredibly proud of her daughter in pursing her goal to become the school’s first indigenous leader.

“She has always upheld good behaviour standards, she’s never been in trouble, so I just encouraged her to work hard and do what she needed to do to earn the leadership position,” Timeah said.

“Heather is proud to set that example for other indigenous students and encourage them to work towards leadership roles in the future.”

Heather had worked hard over the two years to become a student leader in year six and has even started up a breakfast club that has been running at the school.

“I wanted to become a school captain because I wanted to show everybody that I could do something to change the school,” she said.

“We wanted to have the breakfast club and do some fundraising for students that need more school supplies.

“I am very proud of myself, it’s everything I thought it was and breakfast club has been better than I thought it would be.”

COOK MP Cythnia Lui has attended the latest regional community forum where she along with other state politicians joined together to hear and learn about local issues from a range of different bodies.

The forums are held quarterly and are a collaboration between locals, regional stakeholders and government representatives to provide an opportunity to discuss priorities and how to best support communities at a local level.

“I was delighted to cochair the quarterly Far North Queensland regional community forum which took place

recently in both Innisfail and Tully," Ms Lui said.

"These events have also been (previously) held in Mossman, Mareeba and Gordonvale.

“They are a great opportunity to hear from regional stakeholders about their needs, priorities and ideas on how best to strengthen the regional economy.

“The most recent event focused on local (matters), including the Yarrabah Microgrid and the exciting and innovative work being carried out by Terrain Natural Resource Management.

“In addition, we chatted about state-wide initiatives, including the second hous-

ing action plan which looks at how to improve housing outcomes for First Nations peoples, those currently homeless, people in domestic and family violence situations, disabled persons, and the elderly.

“We also held a panel discussion on the lack of affordable housing in an increasingly tight rental market.

“These meetings are a great chance for community and their elected representatives to engage, listen and learn and I am grateful for the chance to attend these remarkable events.”

The regional forums concept was first created in 2019.

Leah’s winning entry ‘Spot the crane’ claimed the win ahead of more than 40 fellow entries.

Dimbulah State School student, Beau Fuller, won the col-

ouring-in competition.

The finalists enjoyed an afternoon of talking to the builders and watching the crane lift a forklift truck before they spoke with a crane driver over the radio.

All finalists received a hard hat, vest and goody bag.

When building works are completed Atherton’s new clinical services building will fea-

ture an emergency department and medical imaging on the lower ground level as well as maternity and birthing services with private ensuite facilities.

Two operating theatres with a sterilising unit will also be on level one, with major plant including air conditioning and associated services on level two.

Work is expected to be completed in 2022.

Traineeship success for Bamaga local A local born and raised in Bamaga is the latest proud graduate from Sea Swift’s highly successful traineeship program.

20-year-old Petrie Tugai (PICTURED) has achieved his Certificate II in Warehouse Operations after entering Sea Swift’s traineeship program in 2019.

Sea Swift’s program aims to develop trainees into longterm employees at their facilities across Northern Australia including shipping services in Far North Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia.

“I would like to encourage young people my age to push themselves and just give it a go, play smart, and do it for the experience,” Petrie said.

“I notice young people walking around not doing anything Self-taught artistic Blacksmith, Alex Byrne spends countless hours in his workshop constructing wrought-iron pieces, that will last for generations.

Blacksmith welds future to past

BY SALLY TURLEY GROWING up in remote areas amidst a family of gold and tin miners, it is not hard to see how a young boy could become fascinated with machinery and steel.

"My family were mining near Irvinebank and up at the Palmer River and when you live out of town and operate mining plants, you have to learn how to fix whatever breaks down yourself. My father can make anything and fix anything, so I guess I learned a fair bit from him" Artist Blacksmith, Alex Byrne said.

"I always liked metal work, but hated the processes of grinding and welding, so just gravitated toward the traditional art of Smithing that was practiced by the old timers who used rivets or forge welding, back in the 18th and 19th centuries."

In forge welding, the pieces being joined are cleaned, heated to near molten, or welding heat, then the smith carefully shapes the mating faces to squeeze out any foreign material as the metal is joined, so that when finally brought together, the center of the weld connects first and the connection spreads outward under the hammer blows.

Often the joint is weak and incomplete, so the smith reheats the joint to welding temperature and works the weld with light blows to "set" the weld and "dress" it to shape. Finally, depending on the item's use it is finished in one of a variety of techniques including paint, varnish, bluing, browning, oil, or wax.

With no real mentor or any kind of formal training, Alex simply set about teaching himself the techniques that would eventually earn him his daily bread in his business "Byrne's Iron Art". Starting

out in an Atherton garage, with a "really dodgy" old forge made from a kitchen sink, Mr Byrne has come a long way.

The game-changer for Alex Byrne was his first market – the Cairns Hand Made Expo, which he attended five years ago.

"I took most of my stock and it nearly all sold on the day, which meant I could pay my rent. I was ecstatic and have kept going, trying to catch up with orders ever since," Mr Byrne said.

"As I made sales, I continued buying new gear, building up my collection of tools."

Unable to afford a blacksmith's striker, an apprentice to swing a hammer all day, Alex said his power hammer, the force of which is equivalent to two strong men with sledge hammers, has sped things up considerably.

Now located in a cottage on the old Rankine's sawmill site, on the way to Lake Eacham, Mr Byrne has the use of a large, well-ventilated shed to work in and is happy spending most of his daylight hours there amassing stock for the Yungaburra and Mareeba markets.

"Since winter started, I have been getting a lot of orders for fire pokers and toasting forks, but I normally make a lot of door handles, hinges and towel rails and fix quite a few gates. I must have made 3 to 4000 coat hooks over the last few years," Mr Byrne said.

"Working for myself is very relaxing.

It means there is no schedule, so I don't have to hurry. I don't take jobs that don't interest me, because if I can't put my spin on a design, I don't feel like I can do my best work on it.

"I want everything I make to outlast me, so I want to do it well. Since COVID

took most of the Victorians out of the markets, I have opened my own Etsy shop online, and it has been ticking along nicely."

He said "a lot of my pieces are made from scrap metal picked up on old farms, stuff that was going to be thrown away, so it is satisfying to recycle an old bit of junk into a piece of art for future generations to enjoy."

"When I am not making items to sell, I am often in my shed making things for my wife Katie's kitchen or a knife blade for myself, which is being re-fashioned from a recycled spring. I would like to perfect axe-making when I get some time, but that probably won't happen for a while," he said glancing through his burgeoning order book.

Traced back to 1500BC to the Hittites, blacksmithing is one of our most ancient arts. The "black" in "blacksmith" refers to the black firescale, a layer of oxides that form on the surface of the metal during heating.

The origin of "smith" is debated, but it may come from the old English word "smythe" meaning "to strike," or it may have originated from the German word "smithaz" meaning "skilled worker."

Back then, blacksmiths made an immense variety of common objects used in everyday life: from nails, screws and bolts to plowshares and axes, hammers, candlesticks; swords, shields, and armour; wheel rims and ship spikes and cables.

But since the rise of factories and the decline of blacksmithing in the 19th century, it has become an uncommon enterprise. Alex has turned the ancient craft into an art-form, fashioning one-off pieces that beautify and individualise modern homes.

“Life is not easy but if you think you can’t, I encourage you to try.

“I would also like to use my experience to be a mentor to anyone that needs it.”

Petrie explained that his brother Tyler Wasiu and sister Saji Nona, who both encouraged him to apply for the traineeship, were a driving force behind his success.

BY ELLIE FINK JUST months off his big gig at Savannah in the Round, 18year old rising country music star Jeremy Fletcher headed off to Tamworth on the weekend to take part in the Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA) Junior Academy of

Country Music.

The national academy sees fifteen young country music artists, aged 12-18, take part in a week long workshop in Tamworth lead by multi-Golden Guitar winner Lyn Bowtell and fellow award winner Roger Corbett.

Jeremy was nominated for

the program last year but it was postponed due to COVID. “Last year, when I was seventeen, I was nominated for the academy through an email and I got accepted, but due to COVID it had to be moved to this year,” he said.

“The academy takes us through lectures and workshops that teach us the skills of the trade, from music writing to advertising and social media.

“I am really excited to go down and meet country music artists and learn from them.”

Popular names in the country music industry Catherine Britt and Aleyce will be visiting Jeremy and the other 14 teens at the academy to educate them on songwriting and music-business related topics.

The program commenced on Saturday, June 26 and will continue until July 2, with the academy graduation being held at the Tamworth Family Hotel on the final day.

Jeremy began his journey in country music writing when he broke his arm playing foot-

ball and used the guitar as a way to rehabilitate it.

“I played the guitar more and more and then it became my thing,” he said.

“The singing thing has only become a thing in the last few years and I have started to re-

cord my songs.”

Now a few years on from his rehabilitation, Jeremy has written eight original songs and hopes to record them all and publish them as soon as possible.

RACQ has revealed some of the most common reasons for Roadside Assistance calls in the last 12 months could have been easily avoided if drivers serviced their vehicles regularly.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said the Club received more than 770,000 calls for Roadside Assistance between May 2020 and May 2021 with more than 360,000 battery issues logged and 64,000 callouts for tyre or wheel problems.

“While we are always happy to come to the rescue of our members, it may be frustrating for them to realise they could have avoided a breakdown if they’d carried out some basic maintenance checks and kept up with reg-

ular servicing,” Ms Ross said.

“It’s good for all drivers to get into the habit of doing a basic check of your car each month. Make sure your oil and water levels are right and give your tyres a once over.

Look for foreign objects in the tyre rubber, make sure the treads are in good condition and the air pressure is correct.

“To avoid a flat battery, don’t leave lights or any vehicle accessories on when the engine is off, and if your car feels sluggish to start, it could be a sign you need to replace the battery.”

Ms Ross also reminded drivers to be vigilant with their keys, with more than 37,000 Queenslanders accidentally locked out of their vehicle.

“To avoid an accidental lockout, take your keys with you when you leave your car as some cars have an autolock function and never give your keys to children who are in the vehicle,” she said.

Ms Ross said regardless of the reason, the RACQ Roadside Assistance team was available to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“We’re here to help our members get to their destination as quickly and safely as possible and are proud to say we get 93 percent of people back on the road again straight away. If you need us, just give us a call on 13 1111 or use the RACQ Roadside Assistance app.”

Family find ideal work/work balance After moving to the Tablelands with his wife Jean and his parents, Ken and Connie in 2010, Trevor Petersen has managed to find an ideal work/work balance that allows him to practice his profession, while indulging his passion.

BY SALLY TURLEY PRIOR to moving north and buying a farm just outside Malanda, the Petersen family had a small cattle block outside of Capella. The two generations pooled their resources and after a year of leasing, bought 50 ha of rich dairying country.

Both practicing accountants Jean and Trevor spent the last 10 years working for an Atherton accounting firm, before buying them out in June last year and forming their own company, JNT Accounting.

After a long day of frenetic figure crunching and client care, Mr Petersen said he can't wait to get home to his farm and his animals for some therapeutic time outdoors, feeding his cattle, irrigating pastures or checking waters and fences.

"We use our 49 Meg water allocation and our solid set and travelling irrigation system to keep green pick for the cattle from August to October, reducing the impact of winter conditions, for the cost of around one round bale of hay per week," Trevor Petersen said.

"A grant from Terrain NRM, the natural resource management body for the Wet Tropics which enabled us to fence all our creeks and stabilise our creek banks with 5000 trees, has delivered improved water quality."

The Petersens run a trading operation, buying the bulk of their cattle through the Mareeba sale yards and the balance from local paddock sales, when mobs become available. Ken Peters-

en's business, P4K Livestock Cartage plays an important role in transporting cattle from point of purchase and between blocks.

Finding the ideal article has become difficult in the current market and Mr Petersen said they have had to just take what they can get this year.

"We buy weaners and turn them over at 450+ kilos. They are back-grounded on our lease blocks, our steers on a 70ha place at Butchers Creek and heifers or other cattle on the 32 ha block at Middlebrook Road, Millaa Millaa," Mr Petersen said.

"Once they reach 300kg, we bring them home to Malanda and put them on a silage-based feed ration of grass and sorghum with hay concentrate combined with Suplaflow, a Wilmar Sugar liquid stock feed supplement.

"We have been trialing Suplaflow, a bi-product of the ethanol process, as molasses was getting dearer to buy and it was quite hard to use in our feeding regime. The Suplaflow is just like brown water, making it easier to mix and the cattle took to it straight away.

"It has a different smell to molasses, but it is not sweet and cattle aren't just drinking it, so consumption is self-limited. It has less energy than molasses, but is higher in protein and we just feed it in troughs by itself or with forage sorghum hay as a complete ration.

"A few of us went into the trial together and got a truck and dog of Suplaflow delivered from Wilmar Sarina. We paid $2,139 late last year for 9.3 tonnes

Even with current cattle prices making it harder for a cattle trading operation to operate, Trevor Petersen and his family are doing well on their Malanda farm.

(9,300 litres). The supplement has 11% protein and it is PCAS (Pasturefed Cattle Assurance System) eligible. We are still assessing results at this stage.

"We weigh the cattle every few months and once they reach their target weights, they are sold to whoever has got the most money.

"We have traded an annual average of 200 head over the last few years and our last mob averaged nearly $1640/hd which makes it a very rewarding form of therapy," Mr Petersen said.

We need the right road infrastructure for future growth I AWAIT with anticipation the soon to be released $1.6m report by the Qld TMR into transport links between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands. It is due to be released ‘mid-year’ according to the TMR website. Whether or not its release will be delayed, or even not made public (Bridge Report?) is to be determined.

According to the FNQROC 2019 report, the Kuranda Range road “is now demonstrably stifling economic development and urban growth in the Cairns, Mareeba, Cape York Peninsula, Atherton Tablelands and Gulf Savannah regions”.

Its now two years since those words were written, and Mareeba continues to have its growth restricted by this road that is not fit for purpose.

Much of rural Australia is facing very tough times. But in Mareeba we have the potential for growth and prosperity, we just need the necessary infrastructure.

Well done by our Federal member Bob Katter for Kennedy for pushing this project so vigorously.

He understands his role is to provide the conditions for economic opportunities for his constituents, sadly it seems the same can not be said for our state member.

Traffic diversion in Mareeba IT must be clear to even the most die-hard councillors that Brisbane traffic solutions are never going to work judging by the stuff-up of the “zombie’ crossings in Byrnes

Street.

Trucks and cars are slowed to a standstill creating cancer-causing diesel fumes and dust from cane trucks for people to choke on, which will only increase later in the season when little or no wind and hot weather causes inversions that prevent fumes from dispersing.

The ‘crossings’ are confusing and badly marked with unfamiliar drivers hitting them at speed, but while the council waits for the Government to finance the planned bypass road (it will never happen) it needs to seek it own solution to the Byrnes Street traffic problem, one that was largely created by council itself by building - as many suggest - the industrial complex on the wrong side of town.

But we are stuck with it, but with some foresight, planning and money the solution is at hand by diverting through-traffic across the old sawmill site and into Railway Avenue, thus avoiding main street and allowing a traffic flow.

Some resumption of land, including part of the rail corridor will be required, buts its small cost to pay for safety and convenience of Byrnes Street users and the easiest and simple option currently available.

Changes cause confusion in Byrnes Street THERE'S been a lot of comment on the recent so called upgrading of pedestrian crossings in Byrnes Street, the main street of Mareeba.

They're called Wombat Crossings.

I've lived in Mareeba for over 70 years and haven't seen one yet.

Anyway, there's obvious confusion on the rights and wrongs of motorists and pedestrians.

Did this stuff really cost $12 million dollars? Someone went to enormous expense and made up some lovely little A4 size signs and hung them on posts for pedestrians to read and figure out what to do or else get run over.

OK, motorists appear to have the right of way, but here's the thing. If ever a motorist and pedestrian(s) do come to grief at a crossing, the fact that the motorist had right of way, won’t mean a great deal in the scheme of things if civil actions for personal injuries are brought.

It will still come down to the apportionment of blame (negligence/ foreseeability etc) and that doesn't necessarily mean it will be in favour of the vehicle driver.

Ingredients ► 1/2 cup soy sauce ► 1/4 cup honey ► 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar ► 2 tbsp rice vinegar ► 3 tbsp peanut butter ► 1 tbsp molasses ► 2 tbsp fresh grated ginger ► 3 cloves garlic, grated ►225g Chinese style egg noodles ► 2 1/2 cups chicken broth ► 2 cups fresh baby spinach ► 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil ► 3 cups shiitake mushrooms, sliced ► 2 shallots, chopped ► black pepper ► 2 tbsp raw sesame seeds ► 2 green onions chopped

Method

1. To make the sauce. Combine 1/2 cup soy sauce, honey, balsamic vinegar, rice vinegar, peanut butter molasses, 1 tablespoon ginger, 1 clove garlic, and 1/3 cup water in a bowl.

2. Cook the noodles according to package directions. Drain. To the pot used to cook the noodles, add the broth and 1/2 of the soy sauce mixture. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stir in the spinach. Keep warm.

3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the mushroom,. cook undisturbed for 5 minutes or until golden. Add the shallots, 1 tablespoon ginger, and 2 cloves garlic. Cook 4-5 minutes, until fragrant. Add 2 tablespoons soy sauce and a large pinch of pepper. Cook another 2-3 minutes, until the mushrooms are caramelised. Add the sesame seeds, cook 2 minutes. Spoon the mushrooms out of the skillet and onto a plate.

4. To the skillet, add the remaining soy sauce mixture and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Add the noodles, toss to combine, and cook until the sauce just coats the noodles, 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat.

5. Ladle the broth into bowls. Add the noodles and toss combine. Spoon the mushrooms over the noodles. Top with green onions.Enjoy!

Walsh sets new record A MAREEBA State School (MSS) student has made history after beating a 34-year-old record and becoming the new king of the 200 metre sprint race.

At the recent MSS athletics carnival, 11-year-old student Colin Walsh took out many firstplace positions and even got age champion, this however was not his biggest achievement.

Colin ended up breaking a 200 metre record that was set in 1987 with a time of 28.69 seconds, a record which Colin beat with a time of 28.24 seconds.

STAR: 11-year old Colin Walsh has broken a 34-year-old record becoming the new king of the 200 metre sprint.

Singles season comes to a close

LAST Thursday and Friday, Mareeba State High School saw the Kennedy Tigers taking out the win for the first time in many years at the 2021 athletics carnival.

The two days consisted of field events such as long jump, shot put and high jump and races such as 100 metre and 800 metre sprints.

Sports Captain for Kennedy, Anton Prizmic said that the win was one worth remembering always.

“It felt great, everyone put in an amazing effort especially in all the running events,” he said.

Memorable moments from the event included Saurav Sapkota and Coco Gambino taking out the fastest male and female in the school.

Mareeba Tennis Club Monday night singles players Ben Scott, Herold Prins and Ian Meyer.

MAREEBA Tennis Monday night singles competition concluded last week with Peters’ Peacocks versus Ian’s Ibis’s.

Ian’s Ibis’s were the in-form team leading up to the final with Division 1s Herold Prinis and Ben Scott consistent winners throughout the season.

Peter’s Peacocks (Peter Blake, Tommy Tsang and Callum Gale) had ideas of an upset which gained momentum when Ben Scott suffered a foot injury.

Ben fought courageously against Tommy and won his singles match in a tie break.

It was three sets to two going into the last set, Peter versus Ian, Ian showed form to bring the victory to his team.

It was a clean sweep for Ian’s Ibis with the team taking individual honours for their performances, Guilie Alderton won the most improved.

Special mention to Marina Battista, Jody Hogan and Alice

Palmer who played very well with some victories throughout the season against opponents who were more accomplished players.

The next Monday night singles season will be starting shortly bigger and better, expected to commence in the next four weeks.

Juniors set to star at rugby league carnivals

RACE DAY The Laura Cup was held at the Mareeba Turf Club on Saturday, June 26 with racegoers coming from all over for a great day of country racing.

MAREEBA Junior Rugby League (MJRL) will be sending two teams away to Townsville to play in separate carnivals over the following weeks.

Both the MJRL U10s and U11s side will be going away for two separate non-competitive carnivals with the U10s in the Gordan Tallis carnival over

the school holidays and the U11s in the Laurie Spina Cup on the weekend of July 17.

The teams have been hard at work training at Davies Park for the upcoming games which has become a tradition for MJRL. “Teams from Mareeba have been going down for years so it’s a bit of a tradition for Maree-

ba to send teams away,” MJRL president Shaun Fincham said.

“In years gone by there has been teams from Sydney come up, they’ll get in excess of 50 odd teams there traditionally.

“The boys get to see where their skills are at, but they also get to get a bit of comradery and mate ship with each other.”

HUNDREDS of racegoers flocked to the Mareeba Turf Club last Saturday for the Laura Cup. The popular Laura Races was moved to the Mareeba Turf Club after Laura cancelled their

race meet earlier in the year due to COVID restrictions at that time.

Off track the fashion stakes were high across all ages, while on track, Rocco ridden by Stephen Potiris ended up making

it over the line to claim first in the Laura Cup ahead of others including wonder horse Paniagua who came across the line second.

Gators rained in by Storm THE Mareeba Gladiators coming off a high travelled down to Edmonton over the weekend unfortunately suffering losses in all three grades.

After winning the local derby against Atherton things were looking up for the Gators

but they got stopped in the mud again this time by the Edmonton Storm.

All the games played were hard and incredibly physical which is reflected by the scorecard, with Mareeba only barely going down by a try’s differ-

ence.

The game ended with Mareeba 24 points to Edmonton’s 28 with all grades seemingly finishing within a try’s length away from a win or draw, up next for the Gators is home game against the Kangaroos on July 3.

Atherton Roosters under 18 forward Brad Hammond looks to push through the Tully Tigers defence at Tully on Saturday.

Roosters overpower Tigers THE Atherton Roosters have bounced back from their last loss to Mareeba to overpower the Tully Tigers 30-22 at the Tully Showgrounds on Saturday night.

Tully were into the Roosters early and had set up a 16-0 lead midway through the first half. Jermaine Pedro’s try at the 26th minute sparked the Roosters fightback and they were soon running the Tigers down.

Another two tries had the

Roosters 18-16 in front at the halftime break and they were now looking very confident in both attack and defence.

A try to Glenn Dumbrell minutes into the restart pushed the Roosters further ahead leading 24-16. Tully did reply to close the gap to 24-22 before Ty Grogan’s try five minutes from the final siren sealed the Roosters eight point victory.

In the under 18 match, the Roosters downed Tully 30-22

with young forward Clayton Dalgety crossing for a double in the Roosters six tries to five victory.

Tully won the reserve grade match 28-14 while Kangaroos defeated the Roosters 58-0 in the ladies game.

Cairns District Rugby League premiership action continues for the Atherton Roosters this Sunday against Ivanhoes at Smithfield.

SPORT Shooting for the stars DESPITE competing against people more than double her age, Atherton’s Grace Grandcourt has punched well above her weight coming first and second in two separate shooting divisions.

The 14-year-old competed at the recent 2021 IPSC Australian National Handgun Championships, first competing in her own age division before moving up competing against adults.

The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) is the world’s largest growing shooting sport and takes a very practical approach to shooting.

Competitors are given a unique course to run through where they shoot multiple targets, moving and unmoving in between obstacles keeping the shooters challenged.

Grace only started shooting three years ago at the Atherton Pistol Club and has taken to it like a ‘duck to water’ according to her mother Rachel Grandcourt.

“She just fell in love with the sport like a lot of people do,” she said.

“It was a hard-earned win, she did a huge amount of practice most night, weekends, she really dedicated herself to it.”

Grace initially participated in the Super Junior (under 16s) category where she won first, from there she participated in the C grade production category which contained 34 adult shooters where she won second.

She was very pleased with her results feeling like the tireless hours of training had paid off.

“It felt wonderful to win, I had worked very hard to was very happy when I won,” Grace said.

“There was some pretty tough competition so I was not always confident on the outcome of the competition.

“I had a lot of support from my Dad (Stewart), my mentor Dom and the other competitors, especially from the Atherton and Mareeba Pistol club.”
