SEVENTY years of marriage, four children, 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren – Giuseppe and Rita Salerno certainly had a lot to celebrate when family and friends gathered in Mareeba on 14 March to mark the special milestone for the couple.

Both in their early 20s, the pair were wed on 14 March, 1952 in their small town of Fagnano Castello, nestled in the mountains of southern Calabria, before Giuseppe took off for Australia later that year.

Just 21 years old at the time, Rita had to stay behind while Giuseppe worked hard to establish a home for the family in Mareeba. Eight years later, he returned to Italy where he met his first-born son, Pantaleo, and stayed for nearly a year before the whole family came back to Australia.

The couple’s other children – Armando, Maria and Lisa – were all born in Australia.

Giuseppe says the decision to move to Australia was all “in the hope of a better life for our family”.

He remembers how difficult life was in Italy in the 1940s when he was 15 years, as war raged around him.

“Food was scarce because of the war.

We had grain but we couldn’t process it because the Germans and Carabinieri would take it all to feed troops on the front lines,” Giuseppe recalled.

“We had to stay in hiding all the time and we worked in the hope that they would pay us something, anything to feed ourselves.”

But arriving in Australia and trying to establish himself and a place for his family was not easy either.

“Life in Australia was not like it is today – there was hardship, but we battled on,” he said.

Since arriving in Mareeba, Giuseppe has worked all his life farming tobacco,

purchasing his farm at Emerald Creek in partnership with Armando Quintieri in 1971, then buying it outright in 1975.

The couple still reside at the farm where they live out their senior years peacefully.

Blessed with good health, Giuseppe is still physically capable and has a clear memory of the past, while Rita has had some health challenges which means she needs assistance walking.

As an avid gardener, Giuseppe says the couple thoroughly enjoy their life on the farm “where there is room to move”.

Ask Giuseppe what makes a good day and he will tell you the “best days are when we have food and drink on the table”.

To that end, Giuseppe reckons one of the secrets to his long life is having hot chilli, a taste he has acquired over time, for breakfast every day and he doesn’t mind “the odd beer or three”.

Community assets under investigation

SEVENTEEN community facilities, including the iconic Majestic Theatre, will be the subject of investigations in the coming months as Tablelands Regional Council considers whether it wants to dispose of them.

Back in September 2020, the council decided to look at community facilities that were approaching endof-life, were under-utilised, or considered to be surplus to community needs, with 25 originally identified as potentially surplus assets.

At last week’s meeting, 17 community facilities were put forward for officers to investigate, with a view to

assessing them for potential disposal.

The facilities include:  the Millaa Millaa RSL Hall  Mt Garnet Town Hall  Herberton Tennis Club  Mt Garnet State Emergency Service Shed  Atherton CWA Hall  Atherton Community Centre  Herberton Town Hall  Malanda Majestic Theatre  Ravenshoe Marshall Park – Judo Club House  Millaa Millaa Golf Club  Atherton Hallorans Hill Observation Building  Malanda School of the Arts Building

 Ravenshoe RSL Building  Atherton State Emergency Service Shed  Millaa Millaa Sporting Hall,  and Butcher’s Creek Hall.

Other facilities or assets on the initial list included the Atherton Performing Arts theatre building, which has been put aside until the lease expires in November 2025; the Atherton Tennis Club, which applied for a 10-year lease in April 2021 that was refused, and instead granted a licence to operate; Millaa Millaa Golf Cub, which was put aside until the lease expires in November 2025; Mt Garnet Rural Fire Brigade Shed, which is now leased by the Public Safety Busi-

ness Agency; and nine lots of land (in Mt Garnet, Atherton, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Innot Hot Springs, and Ravenshoe) which have already been sold.

The Yungaburra Memorial Hall was also on the original list and council had voted to dispose of the building until the Yungaburra Men’s Shed put its case to the council to lease the facility.

The report to council identifies that community engagement must be undertaken in relation to the Majestic Theatre, Herberton Town Hall, Millaa Millaa RSL Hall, Mt Garnet Town Hall, Herberton Tennis Club, and Butchers Creek Hall before any further decisions can be made.

During last week’s meeting, Councillor Dave Bilney moved to reassure the community and users of the facilities targeted for investigation.

“I just want to stress that just because the buildings were listed for consideration for disposal does not mean they will go,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Cr Kevin Cardew agreed saying “it’s just a list to identify them for investigation and community consultation.”

A project plan will now be developed, including a schedule of works, resource allocation, communication and engagement plan, and cost estimates to undertake the investigations.

Chambers unite to bring business issues to light LOCAL chambers of commerce across the region met for the first Far North Regional Policy Committee, a new committee designed to bring local issues to the attention of the State.

The chambers gathered Friday – one of many committees scattered around Queensland made up of the business groups in collaboration with Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ).

The Regional Policy Committees aim to provide local chambers and business stakeholders a stronger voice in discussions about the future of the economy and local communities, including raising important issues impacting their businesses.

They will share knowledge, provide direction, and inform policy related to business needs at the local, state, and national levels as well as contribute to policy submissions and work together to identify and address issues impacting businesses both at the local and state government levels.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce presi-

dent Joe Moro chaired the meeting with other chambers across the region including Cairns, Malanda, Ravenshoe, Western Gulf, Douglas and more – all members of the new Far North Queensland Regional Policy Committee.

Housing, crime, water security, road infrastructure and mandates were just some of the issues that were raised during the first meeting.

“Housing in relation to planning, water security for Cairns and the easing of mandates were some of the issues raised in the first meeting,” he said.

“These committees help bring the chambers together to discuss issues affecting them.”

“We can set priorities which then we feed into the state policy committee which then can be implemented from a state point of view it’s about getting good coordination from a local level all the way up to the state.”

These issues have now been raised and forwarded onto CCIQ who will continue to advocate these issues on a state level.

More than 100 chambers will meet every

quarter part of 11 committees including South East, Darling Downs and South West, Scenic Rim, Sunshine Coast, Far North and North, Mackay, Issac and Whitsundays, Central Queensland and Wide Bay. CCIQ policy and advocacy general manager Amanda Rohan said there was an emphasis for committee members to represent the diverse business community in Queensland to bring all kinds of backgrounds, insights and ideas.

“Queensland is a diverse state economically, geographically and socially so we’re expecting a range of topics on the table,” Ms Rohan said.

“There’s no better way to understand local issues than to get into the regions and hear straight from chambers on the ground.”

As Mr Moro is the chair of the Far North Regional Policy Committee, he will meet weekly in a regional capacity with other chairs and quarterly with the Far North committee.

The next Far North committee meeting is expected to be held in June.

Multi-million dollar capital works deliver MAREEBA Shire Council is nearly halfway through its $42m capital program for this financial year.

Mayor Angela Toppin is happy with the progress, with almost $20 million of works already delivered despite disruption caused by the Covid pandemic.

“Those in construction or development know the challenges of delivering projects on time in this pandemic impacted environment but, as a council, we will continue to pull out all the stops to see these projects through to completion.”

With the shire named as the 6th fastest growing local government area in the State, Mayor Toppin said it was critical to improve core services to cater to the growth, noting that council’s capital works also injected money into the local economy.

“The significant program of works

is one of the major drivers for economic development and growth in the shire. As a council, we know that providing quality, modern infrastructure is one of the ways that we can truly encourage and facilitate future growth,” Mayor Toppin said.

One of these projects, aimed at improving transport infrastructure, is the upgrade of the Davies Creek Bridge on Kanervo Road which is progressing well, in spite of the weather.

“Funded by the Australian Government's Bridges Renewal Program, the project has been undertaken, so far, without any road closures, however, the road will be closed for the final stages of the project, after the wet season,” she said.

During this time, traffic would be detoured via Koah Road and Bolton Road.

One of the major projects under Council's water strategy is the replacement of the failed asbestos cement pipes at Barang Street in Kuranda which has been completed with all service connections and water main tieins finalised.

“The completion of the Barang St project is another step towards delivering our water strategy where we are aiming to replace between 3-4kms of asbestos cement pipe each year, across the shire,” Mayor Toppin said.

The Barang Street project was funded by Mareeba Shire Council and the State Government's Works for Queensland program and was prioritised due to numerous water main breaks occurring in that location in recent years, as well as issues with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services experiencing difficulty with accessing fire hydrants

on the undulating terrain.

A similar project is progressing on the northside of Mareeba, although some delays are expected due to challenges with sourcing certain materials.

“Council will continue to work towards the delivery of this project as the crew moves from Starcke Street to Hampe Street and then onto Moody Street,” Mayor Toppin said.

The Granite Creek Sewage Pump Station upgrade is underway in Mareeba, although the works have been impacted by recent heavy rainfall.

“The high ground water table has resulted in a delay with the removal of

the red brick building, however, works are continuing with the internal structures,” Mayor Toppin stated.

The sewage pump station services all sewered areas of the Mareeba township south of Granite Creek, and it discharges the wastewater into two rising mains on the northern side of the creek, prior to entering the Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Mareeba’s new Buy Back Shop at the waste transfer station is also now completed, with council now calling for expressions of interest to operate and manage the facility.

Small business named best seafood in Queensland

BY RHYS THOMAS AFTER opening their doors 10 years ago, Malanda Seafood has been recognised as one of the best seafood shops in Queensland, winning the Queensland Seafood Industry Business Award (small).

Husband and wife team, Mark Gray and Karen Miller have spent years in the seafood business, utilising Mark’s passion of fishing to provide seafood to their friends and others at events.

Word of mouth quickly spread , growing their reputation of providing quality seafood and after Karen drove past an empty Malanda storefront 10 years ago, the decision was made to open Ma-

landa Seafood.

“I entered back into the workforce as an accounts officer and just went ‘yeah no this is not where I want to be’,” Karen said.

“I drove past this empty shop and just envisioned it and created it.

“We were already suppling seafood to our own contacts, to their friends, and their staff parties then their neighbour, it just snowballed.”

Since running their business, Karen said the customer satisfaction and feedback has always been positive, however, to win this award shows the service Malanda Seafood provides is top level across Queensland.

In order to be nominated for the Business

Award (small), Malanda Seafood needed to be employing less than 10 full time staff, demonstrate business growth, innovation, excellence in product, service and marketing and contributed towards a positive public profile for the seafood industry.

Karen attributes their shops success to their quality control and focus on locals, with Mark having 32 years of experience in fishing, he is on deck himself to ensure the seafood they catch is of the highest quality.

“We maintain quality by staying with the same suppliers that share our same ethics,” she said.

“One of our points of difference is that Mark

is actually the one catching it, so there’s that level of quality control.

“Our son has been fishing with is dad since he was probably seven, he’s now fishing with his dad this year as well, third generation.

“We’ve always said we’re reef guardian fishers, we’re there for the sustainability, we’re not just there for the short term.”

Karen said while winning the award was great for the business, it was also a great tribute to the town who have supported Malanda Seafood over the years.

After winning the Queensland award, Malanda Seafood has earned a spot in the National Seafood Awards due to be held in September.

New service to assist regional births

A NEW con-clinical Midwifery Navigation Service has been established to provide additional support to woman travelling to Cairns from the Torres Strait, Northern Peninsula and Cape York to give birth.

This news comes just weeks after the Cooktown Hospital was forced to halt its birthing services due to a lack of critical staff.

Torres and Cape HHS Nurse Navigators manager Rachel Sargeant said the service would work with women from the Torres Strait, Northern Peninsula Area and Cape York and support them to navigate the system as easily and smoothly as possible.

“The new service is designed for women who

must travel to Cairns to access specialist obstetric and maternity services not available at our local maternity services within the region,” she said.

“We expect the new service will benefit between 250–300 women a year who travel from the Torres Strait, Cape York, and Northern Peninsula area to Cairns.

“Our team of two midwifery consultants (Navigation) and two senior indigenous health workers will additionally support women before, during and after their journey to Cairns to give birth.

“But women with higher risk pregnancies, or other specialised needs, will continue to travel to Cairns or another larger centre to give birth for their and their babies’ safety.”

Teenagers charged with assault TWO female teenagers have been arrested and charged after allegedly assaulting a staff member at an Atherton hotel.

Around 6.30pm on Tuesday night (22 March), two youths were identified as being under-aged and asked to leave a licensed premises in Main Street.

They left, met up with other youths, with the group then returning to the hotel where the two 15-year-old girls from entered the premises.

It will be alleged that, without any provocation, one of the girls assaulted a female staff member striking her numerous times.

When another female staff member came to assist, the second girl assaulted her a number of times.

Both girls were located by police a short distance away and were arrested.

They are scheduled to attend the Atherton Children’s Court next month.

Looking back to bring memories alive

BY ELLIE FINK A PHOTO capturing the history of Mareeba’s Airport could be featured in a largescale mural, as part of the 80th anniversary celebrations of the historic site.

The Mareeba Airport turns 80 years old this May and to mark the millstone, the Far North Queensland Aviation Museum (FNQAM) is asking members of the public to dig deep through their archives to help bring memories back to life of previous airport days.

Every photo, letter or journal donated will help create a timeline that will be painted across the airport’s main entry, which is currently the blank wall facing the Kennedy Highway as you leave Mareeba towards Atherton.

FNQAM director Brendan Kent and the team have been in contact with local historical societies and government agencies to track down pictures dating back to the early

40s, in hopes to get the most accurate representation of the airport’s history.

Now they’re calling on the public to help fill in any missing pieces.

“We’ve had a couple of people get in touch, but we haven’t had too many photos come through yet and we want to get the word out to let people know we are looking for them,” he said.

“We applied to the Regional Arts Development Fund to get a new mural painted at the front as, at the moment, when people drive past all they see is a blank wall.

“We are looking at featuring different types of aircraft and aviation industries such as WWII, crop dusting and helicopter mustering – it will be the first and last impression for people coming into Mareeba.”

Subject to funding, the team will also be putting together a documentary-styled film with the any donated material to give a modernised look back in history.

FNQAM secretary Paul Hobson believes

somewhere out there are families with some amazing history hidden away in their back cupboards.

“I am sure there are a few families out there who might have had family members work here that have albums just sitting there and they probably don’t know this place exists still,” he said.

“We want to try and get those photos scanned and put them together in a few months.”

So far, the team has managed to find some archives such as maps and images, but some have become a victim of time, with many damaged or have been copied so many times it’s hard to read.

Anyone who has anything relating to the Mareeba Airport are encouraged to send a copy through to the FNQAM via email at admin@fnqam.com.au or to visit them at the JRM Braes Road Facility, at the Western end of the airport on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Steeped in history...

STARTING out as a base for military training during World War II, the Mareeba Airport has come a long way over the past 80 years, providing a spectacular touch down for tourist, locals, military and farmers since opening in 1942.

The Mareeba Airport’s origins date back to the war, where a desperate need for a tarmac and military base became the drive for eight days of construction of the first airstrip.

FNQ Aviation Museum’s, Brendan Kent, explained that the Battle of the Coral Sea was becoming intense, and military personnel from both Australian and the United States of America needed a safe place to touch down, reload and refresh.

“The Battle of the Coral Sea was happening in early May 1942, so the need to establish an air base up here for the Royal Australia Airforce (RAF) and the USA Airforce (USAAF) and that is why it came to being,” he said.

“This particular base also had the first parachute battalion, which was the first operational airborne unit in Australia.”

The unit was declared operational in 1944, and the battalion was moved to Mareeba where they participated in many parachute operations from aircraft Dakota C-47, which today is being rebuilt by the museum volunteers.

The battalion played a huge role during the war, being the first of its kind to airdrop military personnel with weaponry such as deadly short 25 Pounder guns.

USSAF bomb squadrons also made Mareeba their base after moving from Cloncurry and affectionately and unofficially named the airstrip “Hoevet Field” after Major Dean Hoevet, whose B-17 aircraft crashed into the sea off Cairns in August 1942, losing himself and his crew to the Pacific.

Throughout early 1943, USSAF used the “Hoevet Field” airstrip for returning bomb squadron crews to re-equip themselves with new B-24 Liberator bombers and returning to the front lines.

FNQAM also recognises the people behind the scenes during the times of the war, including the support people, base services and the fitters who worked in the airport tirelessly to help protect the country.

FNQAM director David Falls explained throughout time those people were forgotten, but said that without their incredible work, the airport’s

history would have been shaped very differently.

“The airport didn’t see much advancement after the war, until Mareeba Shire Council made the ‘brave proposal’ to expand on the airport’s facilities over the last few years,” Mr Falls said.

“It was a huge step for the airport, with many aviation organisations making use of the space, leasing the land and building hangers for their aircraft.

“The Airport is now mainly used as a training base for some fellas in the military and they have a flight training complex that they use, there’s a few maintenance complexes and rotor work for the helicopters.

“NQ Aero Club also moved up here a few years ago because Cairns was getting too expensive and busy, and they couldn’t teach people to fly properly when you have commercial jets coming the other way and they never have a standard circuit.”

As new hangers and new organisations make the move to the Mareeba Airport, FNQAM has a vision of a multi-purposed airport that will continue to host aviation enthusiasts from across the region.

Dental waiting list blows out

PEOPLE waiting for check-ups through public dental services at Atherton will have to wait more than two years, with wait lists blown out due to restrictions in delivering services through the Covid pandemic.

Queensland Health has recognised that wait times for patients using the Atherton public dental clinic are now at 25 months, while Mareeba wait times are currently 18 months.

The organisation says its accepted wait time is two years for dental check-ups and has attributed the increased in waiting times to not only clinical restrictions due to the pandemic, but a nationwide shortage of dentists to fill vacancies as a result of border closures.

“And this situation has been exacerbated due to Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service clinical staff also contracting Covid,” the director of oral health services, Dr Herholdt Robertson, said.

One of the factors affecting the wait lists is also the number of available dental chairs, with six at Mareeba and only two at Atherton.

But Dr Robertson assured the public that if emergency dental treatment was required, arrangements can be made for patients to be seen earlier.

“If a patient requires emergency dental treatment, we may be able to move their appointment so they can see a dentist sooner. All of our emergency dental treatment (facial swellings, oral bleeding, trauma) patients have been seen within one day,” he said.

Queensland Health had held additional clinics late last year in a bid to tackle the backlog of patients.

“Between September and December 2021, five extra clinics were held at Mareeba, Innisfail and Cairns North to clear the Oral Health backlog, with another three clinics scheduled at these locations for this month (March),” Dr Roberston said.

“Patients on the Atherton waiting list have also been offered appointments in Mareeba due to their shorter list but the uptake for this has been poor.

“There is also an initiative in place whereby people waiting on the list can see a private dentist free of charge. Public patients can contact our call centre on 1300 300 850 for further information about this initiative.

“With Covid restrictions easing nationwide, and international flights recommencing into Cairns, we expect the situation for recruitment of Oral Health positions in our rural and remote areas to improve.

“We continue to monitor the situation and we are working closely with our health partners to make further improvements to the public Oral Health waiting list on the Tablelands.”

Dr Robertson also revealed that three oral health clinicians from Cairns were deployed to assist with the Covid outbreak response at Lotus Glen Correctional Facility. “This was not at the expense of any oral health service provision anywhere in our health service,” he added.

Aroma of Easter in the air THE aroma of chocolate fills the air at Mareeba’s Coffee Works as dedicated and creative chocolatiers produce thousands of handmade and intricately decorated Easter products for the upcoming festivities.

The Mareeba-based company has three chocolatiers on staff who are kept busy creating the many different products sold through five different outlets and online, but at the moment, their focus is firmly on producing the thousands of eggs, bunnies, chickens and other items for the Easter holiday period.

Despite having been a chocolatier for 11 years now, Denise Saunders is still excited about her work, enjoying styling each egg individually with flowers, swirls, birds, ducks and other intricate designs.

Assisted by colleague Nyssa Huber, who has only been doing the job for a year now, Denise says they produce around 40 of the bigger decorated eggs per day.

And surprisingly, they both still love eating their own product.

“Yes, we still like chocolate even though we’re around it all day, every day,” Denise said.

The company only uses fine Belgium chocolate which is then tempered onsite, placed into moulds which are then refrigerated before undergoing the decorative process.

“The great thing is all our chocolate is gluten free, and the dark chocolate is dairy free,” Denise said.

Both women obviously love the creativity in what they do, even making customised products to suit a special moment in someone’s life.

“I grew up in Mareeba and I was always wanted to work here since I was a little girl,” Nyssa said.

Sculptures to bring local lost giants back to life

AN exciting new project that will herald the creatures who disappeared from the Atherton Tablelands a millennia ago has been given the green light to establish the first of many sculptures across the southern Tablelands region.

Aptly named “Lost Giants of the Atherton Tablelands – Ice Age to Climate Change”, the project is all about showcasing and celebrate the fauna that lived alongside the original First Nation people, including both extinct and contemporary species.

The brainchild of the Atherton Tablelands Foundation, the project intends to bring these magnificent creatures from the past back to life in the form of full-scale bronze sculptures, together with examples of contemporary birds, mammals, and reptiles.

The collection will take the form of life-sized sculptures to be created by internationally recognised sculptor and artist based at Tarzali, Tom Tischler, whose acclaimed sculptures are on display at 90 museums, zoos and aquariums around the world.

The estimated cost of the overall project is $10-$15 million, with the first sculpture to be located in Grigg Street Park, Ravenshoe after Tablelands Regional Council agreed to the site at its meeting last week.

Foundation board member and Adjunct Professor at James Cook University’s Cairns Institute, Tim Nevard says stories of the “tiger” date back to First Nation people who still talk about the animal’s existence.

“Australian Eden Centre” to promote knowledge, education, tourism and conservation in the region.

“The idea came about and we did an exhibition in May last year of 40 plus maquettes of extinct and contemporary fauna made by Tom which was very well attended, with 98 per cent of people giving their approval,” he said.

“The catalyst for us going ahead though was getting Tom on board – we were very lucky that he was here and with Covid, he had the time to commit to the project and do the vast body of work used in the exhibition.”

Prof. Nevard said the sculptures would be made out of bronze which would endure for hundreds of years.

“We wanted to ensure that we used a material that would deliver the quality and lasting significance that these marvellous creatures deserve,” he said.

Prof. Nevard said the foundation was applying for funding to undertake the project in stages, with nearly $100,000 required for the first piece to be created and established at the site.

As part of Tablelands Regional Council’s approval, the foundation will be responsible for all costs associated with establishing the sculpture in the park, but agreed to bear the responsibility of maintaining and repairing the sculpture, if required, into the future.

Former mayor demands more action on crime FORMER Mareeba Mayor Mick Borzi has come out of the shadows to demand more action to reduce crime in the town he led for more than a decade.

Mr Borzi has joined the chorus of discontent about the level of crime in the town and the seemingly inaction by authorities, support groups, and agencies to do anything meaningful about it.

The former outspoken claims the community at large has been “kept in the dark” with regard to any actions, timeframes or responsibilities associated with the prolonged increased criminal activity in and around Mareeba.

“Surely, after a number of so-called stakeholder involved strategy meetings over the past two years, there

should have been some action to reduce crimes against residents and their property,” Mr Borzi said.

“However, Queensland Police Service’s reported crime figures dictate nothing positive in regards to local crime reduction whatsoever.

“Accordingly, it is hard to see how any community interest is being served or achieved by any of these involved agencies who, to date, seem to be immune from any action or accountability.

Members of Mareeba Crime Action Group are asking agencies involved in developing a proposed anti-crime strategy for answers regarding the continued highly elevated incidences of crime against people and property across the town and region.

Group spokesman Denis McKinley said that under new State Government’s anti-graffiti laws, there was now a table of age-related penalties including graffiti removal orders that could be enforced by QPS officers and the State court system.

“These Graffiti Removal Orders are to take place under the direction of custodial officers. However, to date, the public is yet to hear of any action or results from this legislation at a local level,” Mr McKinley said.

This Thursday, crime will be the focus of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon, with Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin, a representative from the Queensland Police, and a member of Cimestoppers to address the function.

Alannah set to speak at state MAREEBA’S public speaking champion Alannah Falvo made her way down to Townsville last weekend to compete in the District Final for Lions Youth of the Year and took out the competition with ease.

Her speech on the horse racing industry and its underlying cruelness had the audience and judges intrigued, now taking her to the state finals in Maroochydore on the weekend.

Alannah expressed her excitement to making it to the next round and said that she had never expected to go this far in the competition.

“I entered the Lions Youth of the Year Program never expecting to make it past the Club Final, I was just excited for the experience and the opportunity to grow as an individual,” she said.

“For me, making it to the State Final is just a bonus and I am just enjoying each step of the journey.

“Over the last few rounds, I have learnt to embrace every challenge which is definitely something that will assist me into the future as I will face many challenges in my career that I will need to be able to

adapt to and work through.”

Throughout the last four rounds of public speaking, Alannah has embraced the support from her family, community and school.

Her English teacher in particular has been her inspiration and support over the last month of intense competition and Alannah said that she couldn’t have done it without her.

“My family and friends have definitely supported me along the way, but my biggest supporter has definitely been my English teacher who has given up so much of her time to help me practice by impromptu and prepared speeches,” she said.

“The Mareeba Lions Club has also been really supportive of me at each competition, in particular Gary Searle who has been at every competition.

“Without the support of so many, I would not have been able to make it this far.”

Alannah will now be spending the coming weekend in Maroochydore competing against some of the best public speakers in the state for the Lions Youth of the Year State Finals.

POLICE are appealing to the public for witnesses to an accident in Mareeba on 22 March that claimed the life of a 84-year-old man.

Mareeba Pony Club stalwart Col Thompson died after the accident which happened around 7.15am on Tuesday.

The elderly man was riding a mobility scooter along Rankin Street when a collision occurred with a silver 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by a 28-year-old Mareeba woman who was travelling in the opposite direction to the man.

Mr Thompson was transported to Mareeba Hospital as a precautionary measure, however, passed away.

The woman was not physically injured.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators are appealing for witnesses to the collision, especially those with dashcam to come forward.

Campion suggests alternative road link TOLGA local and United Australia Party candidate for Kennedy Peter Campion has presented his solution for an alternative link from the Northern Tablelands to Cairns, an issue he has been pushing for over 20 years.

Mr Campion has criticised the State and Federal Governments failure to address the problems with road links between Cairns and the Tablelands, gulf and peninsula regions.

“Growth and industry in the Tablelands, Gulf and Peninsula areas are being artificially restricted by the uncertainties offered by the outdated existing road links,” he said.

“All we ever see from ALP and LNP governments is millions of dollars of tax money spent on studies, with no viable solution ever eventuating.”

Mr Campion has campaigned for a new road link on a direct, central alignment since 1999’s Integrated Transport Study for the Kuranda

Range, when he raised a 4,500-signature petition for a shortcut Mareeba-Cairns highway.

“Basic geometry says the shortest distance between points is a straight line, and with the major population and freight hubs being in Mareeba and Atherton, that direct line is the one I have promoted for 23 years,” he said.

Mr Campion’s proposal is for a seven-kilometre surface road from the Kennedy Highway linking to a 17-kilometre, gently sloped tunnel which emerges at Ray Jones Drive.

“These days no surface road plan has any hope at all of gaining approval due to UNESCO’s stranglehold on our bush,” Mr Campion said.

“The landslip risk from cutting a four-lane road into the crumbly local rock type is huge.”

Mr Campion’s proposal includes additional infrastructure projects which according to him, would pay for themselves without requiring taxpayers to go into even more debt.

Near perfect score for locally made gin A LOCAL distiller is celebrating a knockout in the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC), entering seven of his “bottles of booze” and more than half scoring high, with their award-winning gin hitting 99 out of 100 points.

Mt Uncle Distillery head distiller Mark Watkins has been experimenting with spirits for years, taking out many prestigious awards in the past, yet nothing beating the thrill of this one.

He described the ISWC the “Olympics of booze”, with their “Botanic Australis Navy Strength Gin” getting the gold medal at the end, being one of only two spirits in the competion hitting the high score.

Mr Watkins said it was an amazing feeling getting the gold and felt relieved to see four of his other spirits get more than 90 points.

“It was a good, solid competition and navy strength gins seem to be the trending gin to be ranked higher for the sheer fact they have higher alcohol in the spirit which holds more flavour,” he said.

“To get 99 points is pretty cool, its like winning the grand final of spirits and it’s also comforting knowing that we are doing something right and that the industry acknowledges it.”

Four other spirits that Mr Watkins entered into the competition received points over 90 including the original black label gin which got 90, the Northern Gem Gin which got 86, Dirt Road Dark Agave with 90 and Iridium 5 Yo Rum with 91.

The Dirt Road Dark Agave is new to the inventory at Mt Uncle, being entered into the IWSC competition before it even hit the market.

The Mexican succulent is locally produced at the distilleries farm and has been used for the

Guinea pig army put to work

HIDDEN away off the grid in the bush of Springmount, an army of guinea pigs are labouring away to get rid of weeds in between fruit trees – all a part of local farmer John Gargan’s “crazy idea”.

The Mutchilba farmer had the epiphany one night while trying to figure out how he could make his fruit trees more sustainable.

He had already tried using cows but their hooves eroded the ground and geese would eat away at the crops he didn’t want touched.

That’s when he had his “crazy idea” – guinea pigs.

“I just thought it up myself, I haven’t seen it done anywhere and I thought to myself ‘they’re nice little critters that don’t burrow and don’t climb and are easy to control’,” he said.

“I also knew the guinea pigs would eat a lot of grass and weeds and I thought because we live biodynamic and don’t use any herbicides, insecticides or chemicals, it would be a great way to control them.

Mr Gargan is deeply connected with the land and does not agree with the use of chemicals in the farming industry, making him what is called a biodynamic farmer.

“Everything is supposed to be in the living realm, so you don’t kill stuff. We don’t use chemicals and we use nature for fertilisation, and it seems to be working because we’ve had some good crops this year,” he said.

With the knowledge of biodynamics, he created a syntropic fruit farm, combining different tropical fruits along a row and letting the guinea pigs roam in around the grassy floor beneath.

Each line of syntropic farming has a dozen or so different fruits growing between each other, ranging from mangoes to bananas to mulberries.

The furry little critters have already proven themselves useful, with a drastic difference between the areas without them and the areas they control.

trees, and we can get runners that are up to eight foot long and it’s a big job pulling them out,” Mr Gargan said.

“You want to figure out how to do syntropic without doing a huge amount of labour because it can be intense, and you want to avoid as much hard labour as possible.

“The guinea pigs do all that hard work – they turn up to work every day and like doing it and you don’t have to pay them superannuation.”

As well as the 60 guinea pigs, Mr Gargan has a gaggle of very chatty geese and an extended family of cows which also provide for their farm by taking and giving back to the land.

He has a special connection with all the animals and his farmland, and he is able to call for both the guinea pigs and the geese to which they respond.

With a high pitched “Tiki tiki tiki”, the armada of guinea pigs squeak back and come to his feet in the hopes of an extra feed.

And with a call “goooosey”, the flock of gaggling geese honk back from the river and give a show of their fabulous white feathers.

“They’re nice little characters, we get to know each other and see all their little personalities,” Mr Gargan said.

Now, Mr Gargan has big plans to keep his syntropic biodynamic farm growing strong and the guinea pigs as well fed as ever.

“It’s all a big experiment – I had to do some trials in fencing that would keep them in,” he said.

“My latest idea is to make a fence that will hold the geese, guinea pigs and cows together so that way I am not building three fences and have the option of three animals in the crops.”

Reassurance on Mareeba maternity unit operations QUEENSLAND Health has moved to reassure the community that Mareeba’s Hospital maternity unit is operating as normal.

The reassurance came after rumours were circulated that the hospital’s maternity unit has closed.

“These rumours are untrue, and they have no basis in reality,” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service executive director rural and remote services Tracey Morgan said.

“Mareeba Hospital’s maternity unit is definitely not closing, nor are there any plans to close this vital service.

“There was a period over

Christmas and New Year where a doctor took leave unexpectedly and Covid impacts on the health workforce nationwide impacted our ability to recruit a doctor with obstetric qualifications on short notice.

“During this period a small number women were impacted due to their birthing risk factors and birthed at Cairns Hospital.

“The Mareeba team continued to offer low risk birthing as well as ante and post-natal care for the women birthing at Cairns. This situation has been resolved, medical staff recruited, and birthing services continue as normal at Mareeba Hospital.”

Teens shave for cure

FIVE students and a teacher from Mareeba State High School braved the shave last Friday, saying goodbye to their luscious locks and hello to baldness – all for a future free of blood cancer.

Although the head shaving was the main event on the day as part of the World’s Greatest Shave, students were also treated to an Hawaiian themed free

dress day, hair spraying and boys leg waxing.

Chenoa, Daniel Boldero, Alexis Fraser, Rebecca Quintieri and teacher Clinton Cifuentes are now proudly displaying their bald heads, raising over $2000 to go the Leukaemia Foundation.

Mr Cifuentes felt the pressure on the day after his grade 12 students convinced him to lose the locks, telling him he was long overdue for a cut and colour anyway.

“The seniors conned me into it, saying it would be for a good cause and I needed a hair cut anyways,” he said.

“I think it’s very important, there aren’t to many people at the school who haven’t been touched by cancer and I think that’s a really good excuse to do this.”

Velenia Musso did not shave her waist length hair, instead opting for a big chop to shoulder length and raising over $1000 all on her own.

Anniversary ball to celebrate Hospital Foundation’s 25 years THOUSANDS of volunteers for the Cairns and Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation will be getting dazzled up and dancing the night away in June to celebrate their 25th Anniversary Ball.

The Foundation has seen many achievements in the 25 years, donating over $25 million worth of medical equipment, support facilities and support for research and education throughout the Far Northern region.

And to celebrate, volunteers will hit the Pullmans International Hotel in Cairns which will be decked out in purple, shimmer and shine.

Dr Ken Chapman has been the chairman of the Foundation since the beginning and said it has been an incredible experience to watch the foundation grow and form into what it has become today.

“Not just in Cairns but in every hospital right around FNQ where we have local committees raising money for their local hospital,” he said.

“It was certainly tough at the start, but we have built strong businesses in our hospital cafes, car park and vending machines and these pay for all our staff and admin expenses, so every cent of fundraising and do-

nations goes to where it is needed most.

“Therefore, people trust us with their support for our fundraising campaigns and great fundraising events like the QSuper Cardiac Challenge and the Arrow Experience.

“The legacy of results from this are the wonderful paediatric playground and the cardiac catheter lab, service upgrades like the now tertiary level endoscopy unit and state-of-the-art medical equipment not seen outside the capital cities is a real credit to everyone involved.”

CEO Gina Hogan said that the night will see lots of fundraising opportunities for the foundation to help support medical services in the Far North.

She expressed that the volunteers were a key piece of the Foundation framework, with more that 1000 registered “Purple Angels” helping raise the much-needed funds.

“From helping with day-to-day activities in our office, to assisting at our community and fundraising events, volunteers help us to raise vital funds for our hospitals,” she said.

Priscilla heads north

March 31, is Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This juke- box musical was adapted from Stephan Elliot’s 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The original film, which was a worldwide hit, follows two drag queens and a transgender woman, as they journey across the Australian Outback from Sydney to Alice Springs in a lavender tour bus named ‘Priscilla’.

The musical, which debuted at the Lyric Theatre, Sydney in October 2006, tells a similar story where the trio are contracted to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs. As they head west from Sydney, they encounter a number of strange characters, as well as incidents of homophobia.

The musical incorporates numerous well known pop songs, so you will definitely want to sing along whilst having a giggle.

All volunteers at the Clink Theatre are proudly amateurs, however the standard of every aspect, from the actors, lighting, costume, producers and directors is as good as any capital city theatre.

AMATEUR thespians have entertained people in the Douglas Shire at least since the 1970s. Initially using various names such as the Port Douglas Players and Troubadours, they performed wherever a venue could be found, includ- ing hotel ballrooms, foyers and restaurants.

In 1982, the Douglas Theatre Arts Group was formed and although this was the begin- ning of a much more organised operation, the group were still without a permanent home.

Ten years later, they finally achieved this with the Clink Theatre, where they have since remained.

This came about partly due to lucky timing but also as a result of some very imagina- tive thinking. In 1991, the old Mossman courthouse, a sturdy wooden structure, was due to be replaced and the Douglas Shire Council needed someone to take it off their hands. A suggestion was made to move it somewhere else and turn it into a theatre, so the building was transported down the Cook Highway to where it now stands in Mowbray Street, Port Douglas.

Basically, the old police lock-up was transformed into the majestic Clink Theatre, now seating up to 120 people for a much more pleasurable stay.

Grants put spotlight on rare species SUGAR gliders and unique frogs only found in Kuranda will be the focus of State grants of more than $37,000 awarded to two community organisations.

GULF Savannah NRM and EnviroCare Kuranda are just two of 40 community organisations to share in $660,320 pf grants aimed at assisting STEM and Science-related research projects.

This year’s Queensland Government’s Engaging Science Grants is the largest ever, providing both local organisations and many more the resources to support their causes.

Gulf Savannah NRM will be using their $18,980 in funding for their “Gliders in the Spotlight” project, allowing school aged kids in the Etheridge Shire to work alongside James Cook University scientists to learn about the Great Glider.

CEO Zoe Williams said students will explore how climate change has impacted the vulnerable Great Glider and how they have found refuge in nearby National Parks.

“That’s a really rare experience for people in Etheridge Shire – it’s a great opportunity for our young people to get real experience and to consider the full range of careers available in the sciences,” she said.

Edward Bell from Kuranda EnviroCare is co-ordinating research into local frogs and said the $19,847 they will receive would be used to build monitoring projects to help preserve tree frogs only found in Kuranda.

The “Frog friendly waterways” project will involve students and local community members whose aims are to educate the community more about the frogs and ways to help protect them.

“This project started in response to the discovery of a tree frog called the Kuranda Tree Frog, which looks almost identical to the normal Green Tree Frog, but it has very different DNA and features,” Edward said.

“We will be hosting things such as workshops and seminars to help community volunteers recognise frogs and their calls and give them the chance to go in the bush and monitor them.

“The best part is that people don’t have to have any science background… we are going to train them up with our equipment and get them to learn scientist data collecting and really contribute real out to the field science.

“And then we will see where the future takes us… hopefully we will find some new types of frogs up here in the rainforest.”

ATHERTON State High School has dominated the recent Cairns Show Young Rural Ambassador competition, taking out first place and second with joint runner ups.

Enthusiastic Year 12 Agricultural Science students David Kilpatrick, Sascha Micola von Furstenrecht and Jacy Evans participated in the competition held in Cairns on 12 March.

The students were asked to submit a short video about themselves as well as be interviewed by a panel of judges and finally conduct an impromptu speech on an agricultural issue in front of an audience.

Winner Jacy said her experience in the competition was fantastic and through it, she has gained inspiration for future careers.

My personal experience was enlightening, through competing I met a large group of amazing people, and I loved every minute of it,” she said.

“I gained a lot of amazing contacts and found another career pathway for future aspirations.”

Joint runner ups David and Sascha learned greatly from the competition and hope to use this experience to further their careers in agriculture.

“As I want to pursue a career in agriculture, I found this experience extremely valuable to meet professionals in the field and gain connections in the industry,” David said.

All participants of the competition also have the opportunity to conduct work experience with Savannah Ag Consulting, to further their interests and careers in agriculture.

Katter calls for ethanol

SOARING fuel prices have shone a spotlight on the what has been described as a missed opportunity to establish a proper biofuels and bioenergy industry in Queensland through the sugar and grains industries.

Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and Member for Hill Shane Knuth say the State and Federal governments have not taken advantage of the opportunity to invest in the biofuels industry, especially ethanol.

The pair recently stopped by at the Tableland Sugar Mill at Arriga, which already produces 24 megawatts of electricity – enough to power 26,280 homes – by converting 100 per cent renewable sugarcane fibre, known as bagasse, into green energy.

Mr Knuth and Mr Katter are again calling on both levels of Government to invest and legislate for the biofuels industry especially ethanol, as North Queensland currently only has one ethanol plant at Sarina.

Hinchinbrook MP, Nick Dametto has announced his intention to strengthen Queensland’s ethanol mandate laws with an Amendment Bill.

“For years the Katter Australia Party (KAP) has been pushing for Australia to be self-sufficient with sourcing ethanol and biofuels and we cannot afford to keep delaying this at the expense of motorists,” Mr Knuth said.

Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and Member for Hill Shane Knuth want both levels of Government to invest in the biofuels industry, especially ethanol.

“A number of years ago, KAP pushed and delivered on the fuel mandate in Queensland which stated that at least 4 per cent of all fuel sold in Queensland needed to be ethanol (E10), but it is no surprise that the Government is not holding oil and fuel companies to account to deliver this.

“Not one fine has been issued since this legislation was introduced.”

Mr Knuth says he is aware of farmers who make and produce their own diesel to run their own machinery.

“This is a great example as to why the government needs to invest

in Australian-made renewable fuel sourced from sugar, grain and algae,” he said.

“The economic benefits of this would be astronomical for communities with more affordable fuel prices, more income for farmers, and local jobs.”

Mr Katter said a nationwide biofuels mandate was one of the four solutions he has been pushing through his proposed Sovereign Fuel Security Bill.

The other measures included waste-to-diesel technology, Australian-made EVs for metropolitan based public servants, and a ban on the

export of Australia’s indigenous oil supply which will boost the nation’s domestic refining capacity.

“If China embargoes our fuel that is mostly supplied out of Singapore and South Korea, then we will have no fuel and see massive queues at every petrol station in Australia,” he said.

“Farmers are paying 100 per cent increases on two major cost input items – fuel and fertiliser. Electricity has also gone up 300 per cent. You just can’t keep farming under these conditions. We must bring down fuel and fertiliser costs if farmers are to survive.”

Forums for fire prone regions LEARNING to live with bushfires is the subject of a program of community events aimed at promoting fire preparedness, planning and coordination around managing bushfire risk.

Gulf Savannah NRM is delivering the program entitled “Living with Fire” through events at Irvinebank, Dimbulah, Chillagoe and Biboohra.

The free events will provide local people with an opportunity to meet fire managers and NRM staff, to learn about resources and tools for understanding fire in their area, and to share insights and lessons learned from recent wildfire experiences.

This will help equip local communities to understand and prepare for wildfire in their immediate rural districts.

The Irvinebank session was held on Tuesday, with Dimbulah to follow on Thursday 31 March at the Dimbulah Soccer Club from 6pm-8pm. The Chillagoe session will be held at the town hall on Tuesday 5 April from 6pm-8pm, followed by the Biboohra session which will be held at the state school on Thursday 7 April from 6pm8pm.

Road is critical for future development

THE need for a more reliable road transport access between Cairns and Mareeba is not just a major issue for those two communities, but one of significant importance to Far North Queensland as a whole.

Cape York, northern Gulf of Carpentaria and Atherton Tableland communities all have a vested interest in the daily performance and availability of the Kuranda Range Road, in terms of their supply chains and future growth opportunities.

As such, all Far North Queenslanders are entitled to be angry and appalled by the gross inadequacy of the so-called ‘Cairns to Northern Tablelands Access Strategy’, released by the Department of Transport and Main Roads last month.

Not since the Palaszczuk Government torpedoed the terms of reference for the EIS to expand the Port of Cairns in 2015, has Labor treated the future development of Far North Queensland with such unforgiveable disregard.

To spend $1.6 million of taxpayers’ money, only to release a report suggesting nothing need be done for 30 years, clearly demonstrates the Palaszczuk Government has nothing but contempt for the people of Far North Queensland.

If this problem existed in Brisbane, would they really be told to wait 30 years?

This glossy brochure, overloaded with pretty photos and short on actual content, is not a serious contribution to resolving this major logistical problem confronting Far North Queensland. Labor’s Transport and Main Roads Minister, Mark Bailey, should be embarrassed.

Minister Bailey should also be called out for his staggering hypocrisy – releasing a report denying action is required for 30 years

one day, but announcing he’ll write to the Federal Government demanding 80 per cent of the funding the next.

Labor’s indolent local MP’s (Crawford, Healy, Lui and Pitt) should be derided for remaining silent while another key decision concerning the future of Far North Queensland is kicked into the long grass.

Nature abhors a vacuum. In the absence of a sensible contribution from the Palaszczuk Government and indeed since the release of its “Strategy”, it seems everyone with a map and an imagination has proposed an “alternative route” over the Kuranda Range.

I don’t claim to be better with a map than any of these erstwhile proponents and while others have used less polite words than ‘imagination’ to describe Bob Katter’s “Bridle Track”, the fact is all of these proposals are premature until you can move Labor’s 30 year timeframe.

Tucked away on page 56 of the “Strategy”, is the concession that while a new road link should be progressed, more work needs to be done on the most appropriate alignment.

While accurate, was this staggeringly obvious observation really worth $1.6 million?

The first question is – given the unsatisfactory scenario of diverting existing traffic onto the Rex, the Gillies and the Palmerston during construction, does anyone seriously think an upgrade of the current Kuranda Range Road alignment can occur under traffic?

If not, we can assume an alternative route is required and get on with a proper, meritbased engineering assessment. This is a critical issue for the future development of Far North Queensland. Andrew Cripps is a former Queensland LNP Shadow Minister for Northern Development and a current LNP Senate candidate.

Wonderful weather for... frogs

THROUGHOUT our region, the first onset of the monsoon rains brings out many species of frogs and large aggregations can produce an astonishing cacophony, letting us know the wet has arrived.

This annual event is colourful and productive as every waterbody is soon filled with not just water, but often teeming with adult frogs busy in the processes of reproduction. Males will call in many different ways – each species is usually distinct – trying to attract a mate.

Females can use the calls to assess the fitness of potential mates before choosing. Later on, as the wet season progresses, there will be more of these frog symphonies, but never quite as spectacular as opening night.

Our region is particularly blessed with frog diversity, most not found anywhere else.

They represent a great diversity of lifestyles, some remaining poorly known. Many are capable climbers, often called tree frogs, and spend much of their lives in the branches, canopies and hollows of rainforests and other communities.

Others are adapted to living underground for the dry parts of the years, burrowing below ground to conserve moisture while they await the next wet season. In the rainforests are many species taking advantage of the leaf litter layer, seeking

protection from predators and raising their young within that moist environment.

Almost all our frogs are nocturnal and for many it takes quite an effort to find them – heading out with headlamps and sharp ears. But some have so adapted to human disturbance that they are comfortable sharing our houses.

There are more than 40 species of frogs in our region and while most are secure, some are threatened with extinction.

Many of our frogs have been adversely affected by an introduced fungus (chytrid) and that has contributed to population collapse and extinction in some Queensland species.

Threats are increasing with climate change and further problems are associated with poorly planned development.

A current issue is the potential destruction of critical habitat for the Magnificent Brood Frog by the proposed Chalumbin Wind Turbine construction.

This amazing frog is a species of few known locations (most on the Tablelands) where the males make small nests to hold eggs laid by females, which they then guard until more rain flushes the emerging tadpoles into adjacent soaks. There is not a single photograph yet taken of a female!

Despite widespread community support for alternative en-

ergy, such developments cannot be seen as green if they destroy critical habitat for endangered species, and of course there are plenty of suitable places for wind towers away from such significant habitat.

Most north Queenslanders are very familiar with the very widespread and abundant Green Tree Frog, resting by day behind paintings, in toilets, in various crevices in and around our houses, only to come out at night and hunt around our lights. They in turn might become a target of others, birds and snakes in particular.

One of the more appealing tree frogs is the Orange-thighed Frog, confined to our region and with a great call. When the rain is really coming down the males gather low down (descending from their canopy hideaways) and compete with their incessant calls.

Females are fussy but eventually they might accept a male and adjoin to a nearby waterbody where eggs are deposited on underwater plants. Next time it rains, take a walk outside and see how many species of frogs you can hear or see. You might be surprised.

▶ 2 medium beetroots, skin on ▶ 400g chickpeas, drained and rinsed ▶ 2½ tbls tahini ▶ 2 cloves garlic ▶ 1 tbls lemon juice ▶ ½ tsp salt ▶ ¼ tsp cumin ▶ water to thin

1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. 2. Wrap each beetroot in aluminium foil and roast them for 1 to 2 hours until soft and tender.

3. Once the beetroots are roasted, remove them from the oven and let them cool. Peel the skin and chop them into chunks.

4. Place the beetroots, chickpeas and garlic into a food processor and blend for 1 minute.

5. Add tahini, lemon juice, salt, cumin, 1 teaspoon of water and blend until the hummus becomes smooth and creamy.Taste and adjust the seasonings, adding more salt or lemon if needed 6. Refrigerate or use immediately. Roasted beetroot hummus will last in the fridge for approximately 1 week.

SPORT Carroll wins Boxers at War title

THE Mareeba Workers Club was packed to the brim on Saturday night as Bryde’s Boxing Gym’s Matthew (The Cobra) Carroll went head-to-head with Aaron Rapliza from Art of Strength Townsville in Boxers at War 9.

Carroll had previously gone up against Rapliza before in the ring and came out victorious, this time was no different with Carroll taking home the belt.

Rapliza gave it his all however Carroll’s determination pushed him over the edge, with the referee raising his arm in victory in a unanimous points decision.

Another local boxer, Raymond Haines also sho cased his boxing skills in a exhibition bout.

Haines’s skills shined as he boxed through four rounds with Josh Harris from Buzzers Gym Port Douglas.

While in the Masters division, Wayne Cutter won his fight against fellow Master's boxer Kym Hunter.

Another feature was the three-way exhibition with the Shaw sisters from Hawkes Boxing Townsville, Destiny and Trinity, tag teaming against master’s boxer Bron De Lange from Shock boxing Ingham. The fight left the crowd on their feet and cheering.

Mareeba gymnasts show out at regionals MAREEBA’S senior gymnasts have been working hard during their current competition season with six gymnasts recently competing in Townsville for the Senior Regional Championships.

Angelina Tulloch, Brydie Genge, Dayna Pearce, Frank Tulloch, Myles Dobbs-Brown and Oliver Hampton all

travelled down to Townsville to compete with some achieving first and second places on their apparatus.

Tulloch placed 2nd on uneven bars, and 3rd overall, Pearce placed 1st on vault, 2nd on bars, 3rd on floor and 2nd overall, and Genge achieved 1st on vault, 2nd on bars, 3rd on beam, and

2nd overall.

The Mareeba Gymnastics Club male gymnasts did just as well with Tulloch placing 1st on all six apparatus, achieving 1st overall as well as Dobbs-Brown who placed 1st on all six apparatus as well, getting 1st Overall while Hampton took home 2nd on floor, 1st on rings, 1st

on high bar and 4th overall.

Mareeba Gymnastics Club coach Kelly Tulloch was extremely proud of her gymnast’s performances over the championships.

“All gymnasts competed extremely well and all qualified for Senior States which will be held in Brisbane next

weekend,” she said. “As their coach I was very happy with all the athletes as they displayed great determination to get in and get the job done.”

Now these gymnasts will be heading off to Brisbane this weekend to compete in the Senior State Championships from Friday 1 April to Monday 4 April.

Mareeba cricketers celebrate end of season THE Mareeba Cricket Club took time to recognise their players on Sunday for their successful efforts during last season, hosting their annual presentation day.

Third Grade had a super successful season this year with the Bandits taking out both the minor and major premierships.

The club took time to celebrate the efforts of their teams and their players during their presentation night.

Third grade opener Brendan Falvo was not only named the winner of the Gordon Pashen Memorial Trophy, he was also named the Men’s Champion Player.

Rising star Ryan Jaszczyszyn was named the Junior Champion Player of the year while Kasey Sheppard was named Ladies Champion Player of the year.

Golfers back on course GOLF has returned to the Millaa Millaa Golf Course after a week off due to weather with 22 members and four visitors enjoying a fantastic day of golf last week.

The four visitors Alicia English, Shane Dodds, who had an eagle on number 11, Paul Possely and Phil Hendrick all agreed that the course was in great condition.

Even though the weather and course were in good condition, scores weren't as good as expected with Brian Cole the one player to finish with a nett 69 and not only did he do it with

his 40 foot putt on number 18, he also won the prize for the longest putt on that hole.

Trevor Warrener and Paul Posselt both finished with a nett 70, however the count back on the last nine finished up 32 to 32.5 giving Trevor second place.

Ash Healy was the nearest to the pin on 1/10 and Richard (Sol) Sullivan was nearest on 5/14, second shot nearest on 6/15 was Alicia English.

Next week is the monthly medal sponsored by our friends at Mungalli Dairy Products and the Millaa Millaa Hotel.

ATHERTON’S star gymnast Emily Mills has become the Tablelands maiden Level 10 gymnast after her first senior competition at the end of February, a testament to her skills and determination on and off the matts.

Achieving status as a Level 10 gymnast at just 16 years old is an amazing achievement not only for Emily, but for her club, Momentum Gymnastics.

Emily earned her stripes as a Level 10 gymnast after the Chalk it Up and Raise the Bar events held in Mareeba and Barron Valley respectively.

Level 10 is the highest level a gymnast can achieve in national stream gymnastics before moving into the elite streams and there are currently only 20 other level 10 gymnasts in Queensland.

Since prep Emily has been on the mats at Momentum Gymnastics, first starting off in their entry level classes before her love and passion for the sport pushed her higher.

“I started gymnastics when I was about 5, in prep, and it was just a bit of fun,” Emily said.

“I really love gymnastics and I would like to train more than the 16 hours a week I already do.

“Getting to Level 10 has always been a goal for me and to achieve it feels amazing.”

Emily’s double back performance on the floor was a major highlight of her performance and earned amazing support from the spectators.

Level 8 gymnasts Makayla Ghidella and Amy Le’Gear also competed at the Mareeba and Barron Valley competitions with Natarlia Weston joining them to compete in Level 7 at Barron.

Despite not being able to compete themselves due to injury, Hannah Mills and Madison Marshall offered great support to their teammates as they ran through their routines.

Emily’s coach, Dianne Stephens said Emily has been training over 16 hours a week for months in preparation for her level testing.

“The process to get to Level 10 is huge and there are not a lot of girls that actually do it in the entire state, let alone the Tablelands,” she said.

“16 to 18 years old is about right for Level 10, we were hoping that she would get through to her Level 10 by this age.

“Now she will stay in Level 10 and keep competing and upgrading her skills so that will make her even more competitive.”

Due to her performances, Emily has earned a spot in the upcoming Senior State Championships in April and if successful she can be picked for the state squad to compete in nationals.

SPORT Bulls take down Leichhardt

THE Mareeba Bulls have opened their 2022 season with a bang, going up 2-1 against the Leichhardt Lions in Cairns on Saturday night in the Australia Cup. Coach Kane Alderton said it was a good physical game against the Lions and a perfect chance for the boys to shake out some cobwebs.

After being two nil 10 minutes before full time, the Lions stuck back to get the score to 2-1 and fought hard for the equalising goal.

“It was probably their first true hit out for the squad – the effort and commitment were definitely there,” he said.

“It was a good hard game, physical game – we were two nil up with 10 to 15 minutes to go and they got one back.

“So that last 5 10 minutes they were really pressing to get that equaliser and we withstood that pressure and ended up with the win.”

Gladiators start on a loss

THE Mareeba Gladiators travelled down to Alley Park in Gordonvale over the weekend for their first game of the 2022 season against Southern Suburbs, finishing 26-24 and taking their first loss of the season.

There was only one try difference between the two teams with Suburbs crossing the line five times compared to the Gladiators four.

However, Gladiator Trezman Banjo put all four

of their conversions through the posts, bringing the game down to a two-point difference.

Robert Pedersen, Huburt Elu, George Major and Banjo all crossed the line for the Gladiators over the course of the match however the final game winning try eluded them.

The Gladiators will now travel down to Tully to play against the Tigers for their second matchup.

New water truck for Mareeba race track THE Mareeba Motor Racing Club will be able to continue their regular racing events after a $20,000 grant allowed them to purchase a new water truck.

The water truck is vital to ensure the speedway tracks condition is suitable to racing and now thanks to a Queensland Country Good for Good Community grant, the club was able to replace their aging critical equipment.

“Before we received the grant, the club was struggling along with an older truck that was rusty and unsafe, and it just couldn’t do the job that we require,” president of the Mareeba Motor Racing Club, Scott Davis, said.

“Without a reliable water truck, we simply cannot function as it maintains the quality of the racing track which is crucial for our members, so the funding received to purchase a new truck has given the club a new lease on life.”

Alongside ensuring the club can remain operational, Mr Davis says the new water truck further supports them in sustainably maintaining the grounds and meeting regulatory requirements.

“We have some large and exciting meetings on the calendar this year, so the new piece of equipment will be a catalyst for the club’s growth, as being able to properly maintain the racing track means we will now attract interstate races.”

Innisfail takes back Mayor’s Cup THE Innisfail Leprechauns have won back the John Cole Toyota Mayor’s Cup after defeating the Atherton Roosters 26-10 in Saturday nights opening round of the 2022 FNQ Rugby League premiership competition played at Innisfail.

The Mayor’s Cup is an annual first grade match up played between the two clubs each year and now remains in Innisfail for twelve months after a three year stint in Atherton. Innisfail also collected the two premiership points on offer in the first week of the new season following their five tries to two victory over the Roosters.

After leading 8-4 at the break, Innisfail crossed three more times in the second term which shut out any chance of a Roosters recovery.

While undermanned for the trip to Innisfail, the Roosters night was riddled with errors and many times they were guilty of handing possession to

their opposition early in the tackle count.

Nick Pratten has strong in his new front row position for the Roosters while hooker Glenn Dumbell had his usual busy 80 minutes. In the under 18 game, the young Roosters outmuscled Innisfail with a strong defensive effort to finish 28-6 winners after leading 18-6 at halftime.

The final score in the reserve grade match was a 26 all draw after Innisfail scored a converted try on the fulltime siren to lock the scores up.

Results from other first grade games played over the weekend – Suburbs 26 vs Mareeba 24, Mossman 72 vs Yarrabah 12, Kangaroos 40 vs Edmonton 28, Brothers 64 vs Tully 4.

This weekend the Senior Roosters host a rare Sunday home game against the Yarrabah Seahawks at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.
