NOT AGAIN Community in shock as Mareeba’s second fire in a month destroys two businesses DETECTIVES investigating a fire that fully engulfed and destroyed two Mareeba businesses last Friday morning are at this stage leaning towards the blaze being non suspicious.

For the second time in a month the Mareeba community is rallying behind their own, with both Hort St Café and

Floral Magic burnt to the ground during the incident.

The fire comes nearly a month after a separate fire, thought to be deliberately lit, destroyed the Performance Motors workshop on June 29.

“Neil and I would like to thank everyone for your calls and messages

regarding our buildings and business with the Hort St fire,” café owner Debbie Sweedman wrote in an online statement.

Floral Magic also posted a statement online saying “on behalf of Renee and Taylor they would like to extend their thanks to the emergency services

personnel that attended the fire on Hort St,” the statement said.

“As the smoke clears this morning it’s evident there isn’t anything left to salvage. “As you could imagine the Hughes family has received a devastating blow both financially and personally.”

Locals urged to get involved with country music spectacular

SAVANNAH in the Round festival director James Dein and event assistant “Nipper” Brown have thrown the call out for the region to embrace and become part of what looms as Australia’s country music event of the year.

Dein and Brown have encouraged the Mareeba community and surrounding Tablelands’ townships to take proud ownership of the event and as such both would love more local groups and individuals to get involved.

Whether it’s running a stall, being a volunteer, or simply offering a few hours over the three days to ensure the smooth running of the October long weekend event, Brown suggested it’s the contribution and community involvement that truly matters.

As it stands Mareeba Cricket, Mareeba Men’s Shed, the Heritage Museum and Visitor Info Centre and Paddy’s Green Rural Fire Brigade are each already locked in to assist, but Brown would love more local groups such as the Lions, Mareeba Men’s Leisure Group, Scouts and others, to consider being a

part of things as well.

“Savannah in the Round is truly an event for the people, run by the community, and by that I mean the hardworking volunteer groups in Mareeba and across the region,” “Nipper” Brown told The Express.

“An event of this magnitude relies on the hard and selfless work of volunteers and volunteer groups.

“If groups want to be a part of Savannah in the Round, I would welcome and encourage them to contact me directly to get involved.

“Likewise, if there are com-

Second blaze in month shocks town

IN A SHOCKING case of deja vu Mareeba residents have again been left reeling and in a state of disbelief after two adjoining businesses were burnt to the ground nearly a month to the day a separate blaze destroyed the Performance Motors workshop in the early hours of June 29.

Local Police conducting regular patrols first noticed, then reported, the latest fire around 12.50am last Friday

morning, June 23.

Upon arrival five Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews discovered two local businesses, Floral Magic and Hort St Café, formerly Leaf Vine Café, both well alight and completely engulfed by flames.

A third business, Sharpe Psychology, suffered damage to its roof.

The fire’s flames reached five metres high during its strongest point, with Fire Officers finally having the blaze under control by around 2.30am.

A leading detective who was on the scene by around 1am said preliminary investigations suggest the cause of the fire could be accidental.

“At this stage the fire does not appear suspicious,” Detective Senior Sergeant and Officer-in-Charge of The Tablelands CIB Brett Devine told The Express.

“Scientific staff and fire investigators have examined the site over the past few days.

“Investigations will continue until a complete and fi-

Mr Devine said although fires are extremely untimely, sadly, they are not uncommon.

“Any fire is terrible and def-

initely not ideal,” the Detective said.

“In saying that, they are not entirely unusual. Mareeba is a small place so it adds some strength for people or commu-

nity members to initially think it may be (suspicious) however, they are not unusual. Fires occur, all over the place, all the time.”

Taskforce on cards to address Juvenile and youth crime A NEW future taskforce created as a measure to tackle juvenile and youth crime offending will meet for the first time on September 6 following recent talks between Mareeba mayor Angela Toppin and relevant state representatives.

Tablelanders had hoped for the convening of a public rally or meeting to address the mat-

ter following a devastating fire to a local business on June 29, a Mareeba pet shop robbery and repeat cases of vandalism to Mareeba’s Byrne St Cenotaph.

Neighboring Atherton has not been spared either, with a local community hall, tennis club and businesses being subjected to recent break and

enters and vandalism.

However, the creation of a dedicated taskforce to focus on the issue, is nonetheless a small step in the right direction.

“I’ve been advised that the Mayor recently met with the North Queensland Regional Executive Director of the Department of Children, Youth

Justice and Multicultural Affairs (DCYJMA) along with other departmental staff,” Cook MP Cynthia Lui told The Express.

“It’s my understanding the meeting was very productive and that the mayor presented a proposal for a Mareeba Taskforce and invited the department to attend the inaugural

Yungaburra renews town map Visitor Information Sign

Yungaburra Association INC members Kathyrn Bliesner, John Pollock and Jan De Lai point out some favourite local spots to eager tourists Lynne Fitzpatrick, Chris Evans, Petra Green and Josh Lochhead.

AN UPDATED town map will provide locals and tourists alike with places of interest to see and experience in and around Yungaburra.

The idea to renew the map started in 2018 when Tablelands Regional Council provided the Yungaburra Association Inc (YAI) with a grant for the project.

The new maps were devised thanks to community input along with the assistance of graphic designer Marie Martin.

The latest map has retail, accommodation, dining, services, wildlife and sightseeing options.

Despite delays brought on

by COVID the new guide was finally unveiled to the public over the few past few days.

“Yungaburra really is an unforgettable location; we’re surrounded by spectacular lakes, stunning scenery and amazing wildlife,” YAI secretary Kathyrn Bliesner told The Express.

“These attributes have been encompassed in the latest incarnation of the Yungaburra Visitor Information Sign.

“It’s been a long but rewarding process to finally see the town’s map renewed. The original map, hand painted many years ago, was really a work of art.”

Long weekend frustrations around Barron Bridge

BY MICHAEL WARREN IN an all too familiar scenes returning long weekend motorists to Mareeba and the Tablelands faced lengthy and frustrating delays over the Cairns Show long weekend in and around the troublesome Barron River Bridge.

With traffic lights at either end unmanned and on autotimed settings just a few cars at a time – even less than usual – were able to scramble across to the other side before the red indicator reappeared.

As such motorists faced a frustrating and tedious wait with traffic banked up along the Kennedy Highway as far back as the Kuranda Vet Surgery.

Some motorists reported experiencing a 40-minute wait before being able to cross Barron Bridge.

The ongoing delays surrounding the Barron River Bridge aren’t destined to disappear anytime soon either, with TMR, only weeks ago, starting a $2.1M investigation into the future of the aging structure.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey told The Express the project will “look at replacing or rehabilitating the ageing bridge”, but ominously revealed on the record that “construction of any solutions identified through this planning remains unfunded”.

A $30M project set to start later this year to upgrade intelligent transport systems on the Kuranda Range is of little interest to residents who instead just want the Bridge fiasco to be settled and determined once and for

all.

Most recently Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads Steve Minnikin MP declared the Barron River bridge as “structurally unsafe” during a recent trip to Far North Queensland.

Mr Minnikin put Mr Bailey MP on notice instructing him to “get on to the source of the problem, find out what needs to be done (with the bridge), and simply get on and do it”. “They need to make this bridge one of the highest priorities in the state.”

Meanwhile, an Express Fa-

cebook poll conducted to determine and assess local sentiment about the need, if any, to construct the much talked about Kuranda Bypass Road has returned a resounding result.

The poll recorded more than 700 responses, with 603 people voting in favour for the road to be built while 112 returned a ‘no’ vote. In simple terms 84.5% of voters were in favour, while 15.7% against it.

“A new inland Highway will save Tablelands and Cairns motorists 30 minutes in travel time

when compared to the existing route,” Hill MP Shane Knuth told The Express.

“A new, safer and wider highway will also open up the Tablelands, Gulf and Cape York regions and allow greater production in agriculture and mining.

“It’s the year 2021 and it’s been 30 or 40 years since we have seen real nation building projects in Far North Queensland. This is the time for Government to act and build this inland highway.”

Tablelanders urged to get vaccinated in wake of local COVID case

BY MICHAEL WARREN TABLELANDERS have been on high alert in recent days after a fully vaccinated Mareeba woman in her 20s returned a positive COVID test just days after arriving back in the region following a trip to the Sunshine Coast from Melbourne.

The Express understands the woman contracted COVID in Melbourne in or around July 10, and unknowingly flew to Maroochydore from Melbourne three days later.

On July 15 the woman received a text message from Victoria Health officials informing her she had recently attended a ‘tier one’ exposure site at a Melbourne CDB pub.

As such the woman immediately took a COVID test and returned a negative result.

The woman went on to visit more locations around southeast QLD, before flying home from Brisbane to Cairns on Friday, July 16 on flight VA791.

QLD Health confirmed it’s likely the woman was infectious in the community between July 15-17.

Upon her arrival the woman was picked up at Cairns airport by her mother and driven to Mareeba.

The Express understands that on Sunday, July 18 the woman made the decision to drive to a COVID testing

clinic in Atherton, where she underwent, and consequently returned, a positive test.

Despite returning the positive test The Express understands the woman is in good health. Over the past few days the woman has been flown to Brisbane on a private flight and is currently undergoing strict quarantining in hospital.

The girl’s close contacts including her mother have all been tested, returned negative results and are now in self-isolation for a 14-day period.

A family spokesperson made a recent public statement to clarify details about the matter.

“All household contacts and family both here (Mareeba) and the Sunshine Coast have returned a negative result yesterday morning and are now in isolation and pose absolutely no risk to the local community,” the family statement read.

“Yes, myself and her mother have been out in the community over the weekend – but QLD Health have confirmed that because of us returning a negative test yesterday morning, there is absolutely no community risk from our movements over the weekend.

“We are urging people to please stop making up rumours which is only causing more fear and unrest in our community.”

In further developments The

Express understands a Department of Natural Resources employee from Mareeba was on the same returning flight to Cairns as the woman who returned a positive test.

The man took a COVID test last Monday and although QLD Health hasn’t publicly confirmed, it is widely acknowledged that his test has come back as negative.

“The Department of Resources Mareeba office is operating as normal,” a departmental spokesperson exclusively told The Express.

Meanwhile, Pharmacy Guild of Australia National President Trent Twomey has confirmed Tablelanders 40 years old and over now have direct access to the AstraZenica vaccine.

As it stands, residents aged 40-plus in Mareeba, Atherton, Yungaburra, Malanda and Kuranda can now be administered their AstraZeneca vaccines at a range of local pharmacies by calling in advance or simply booking online.

In Mareeba residents can receive their COVID jab at Priceline Pharmacy and Wholelife Pharmacies and Healthfoods.

In Atherton the vaccine is directly available at Wholelife Pharmacies and Healthfoods, Tablelands Discount Drugstore and Calanna Wholehealth Pharmacies.

Tablelanders can now be administered their AstraZeneca vaccines at various pharmacies in Mareeba, Atherton and across the region. Mareeba Wholelife pharmacist Josh Klein holds an AstraZeneca vial which are now available to the public.

“Do the right thing by yourself, your family, and the community, this is the only way to

protect yourself against serious potential illness or death,” Mr Twomey told The Express.

Accountants expand Mareeba office to better service region

AFTER nearly 12 years of servicing both Cairns and Mareeba, local accountant Dominic Cosentino has expanded his Mareeba firm to better service clients on the Tablelands.

Shows in trouble as showmen struggle to secure insurance

Residents of Amaroo Estate have established a new advocacy group aiming to get a new park installed on the eastern side of Mareeba.

Residents push for park at Amaroo RESIDENTS in Amaroo Estate have established a communitybased advocacy group aiming to get a park built in one of Mareeba’s largest growing residential estates.

Amaroo Estate is located on the eastern side of Mareeba over the Barron River and is easily one of the fastest growing residential estates in Mareeba.

A group of residents have established the Mareeba East Destination Park group to advocate council to have a new park installed for all residents to use.

Will Geddes and his wife Jay are part of the newly formed group and have said that currently there aren’t any parks readily available to use on the eastern side of Mareeba.

“We are always going to the other side of Mareeba or into town, or even to other towns,” Mr Geddes said.

“We are waiting for the association to be formally formed before approaching council.”

Although the park is proposed to be installed within the Amaroo Estate the Mareeba East Destination Park group have been very specific in saying it is for the whole town and other communities.

“It’s such a growing area there are so many young families, a park would be a natural asset to have,” Mrs Geddes said.

“Lots of locals and residents in this area see a need for it.

“It’s not only targeted at Amaroo we have been really

specific in it being for Mareeba east because it covers such a large area.”

One of the Developer’s for Amaroo Estate Sam Musumeci approached council some years ago looking to build a park in the new development.

At that stage council didn’t have the required funds and the project has since been shelved, now with an influx of community support the new park could become a reality.

“Council acknowledges the Mareeba East Destination Park group, I can understand their interest I can understand their passion,” Mr Franks said.

“That is where the vast majority of expansion is happening and there isn’t a park on that

side of town of any significance.

“At some stage we are going to have to put a park over in that side of town, there is no issue with it at all.

“The website they have put up is very professional and they are putting forward a really good case, they are doing a really good job.”

During the year council has been developing an open parks and spaces strategy with the aim to look at areas across the shire where new parks or open spaces could be installed, Amaroo is one of these Areas.

The strategy still needs to be finalised and council hopes to present it later in the year identifying new areas for parks in the shire.

ance,” he said.

“If we can’t get insurance there probably won’t be a show because without the amusements and high caliber equipment we provide, there is no sideshow alley.

“We’re probably about 80 percent of what the show is all about at the end of the day.”

There is a potential light at the end of the tunnel however as the Australian Amusement Leisure and Recreation Association (AALARA) is attempting to establish a DMF fund that would be owned and managed by the showman.

This potential $20 million pool would serve as a support for the showmen’s guild to fall back on and act as an insurance pool whilst other brokers pursue alternative insurance options.

“What the DMF creates is futuristically is when the market hardens again we won’t be caught up in it,” Mr Osborne said.

“A DMF fund is member controlled so with the assets we have within that fund we will be able to get through and survive the next onslaught of a hardening market.

“We’ve got to take whatever we can.”

SHOWS in Australia could grind to a halt as showmen struggle to secure insurance for their rides and amusements potentially jeopardising Australia’s show industry.

Showmen all around Australia and around the world have been facing an insurance plight since midyear 2020 due to COVID, causing a sleuth of cancelled shows around the country and around the world.

This caused many showmen to cancel their policies with no need for rides or amusements, leaving insurance brokers with ongoing claims and payouts.

Around the world there was a tightening of the insurance market and brokers didn’t want to enter the higher risk categories of the bigger rides.

Since most of the reinsurers are based out of London once the world gets affected so does the smaller niche Australian market.

Trustee of the Showmen’s Guild Australasia Lewis Osborne has said that without an alternative insurance option, shows around Australia will stop completely.

“We’ve got a lot of members now out of work because they cannot get insur-

THE highly popular Gemfest has rolled around once again with a massive selection of rocks, gemstones and much more ready to be put on display at Atherton’s Morrow Park come August 1.

The Gemfest run by the Atherton Tablelands Mineral and Lapidary Club in conjunction with the Tolga Markets.

It is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year with all money gathered spent in the club purchasing new equipment and other necessary items.

A raffle with nine prizes will also be run throughout the day with the first-place winner getting to take home a Zircon Silver Pendant.

Vice president of the Atherton Tableland Mineral and Lapidary Club Ray Clauss is excited for this year’s event after last years was cancelled.

“This is the club’s biggest event so if you’re into rocks, gemstones, slabs, cabs and machinery make sure you bring your bags, boxes or trailer to take your goodies home,” he said.

MP requested to table new highway resolution A RESOLUTION confirmed at a large public meeting in Mareeba on June 1 has been given to Cook MP Cynthia Lui to table in State Parliament.

The agreed resolution stated that “this meeting requests the construction of a new access road to Cairns from the Tablelands,” and that “this meeting instructs the

40 year celebration of Fogolar Furlan THE Fogolar Furlan Club of Dimbulah was established nearly half a century ago, providing a place for Italians moving to Australia where they could feel comfortable in their strange new country.

After WWII ravaged Italy people struggled to find work to provide for their families, hence many became immigrants moving to different countries, Australia included.

Around 150 families were involved with the Fogolar Furlan Club of Dimbulah when it was founded in 1981, now 40 years on they still hold a high number with 74 families involved.

Ermes Schincariol has been involved in the club since the beginning, holding the position of treasurer on the first commit-

tee in 1981.

Establishing the club was good for both Italy and Australia as Mr Schincariol believes they acted as “ambassadors”.

“This was good for both Italy and Australia because we kind of acted like ambassadors,” he said.

“We didn’t know anything when we moved here.

“We would come together one a week, a fortnight or a month and have a couple of beers.

“It was a way for everyone to get together and talk, laugh and reminisce.”

Lawn bowls is often on the agenda for the Fogolar Furlan Club as they play the local Trevisani Club, another Italian club with members from Treviso, Friuli’s neighboring region in Italy.

“We have a party after we finish, it doesn’t matter who won and all the afternoon you have some beers and smoko,” Fogolar Furlan Club member John Pin said.

The Fogolar Furlan club of Dimbulah now holds two biannual events, a BBQ in Dimbulah and a dinner and dance at the Mareeba International Club.

August 14 is the next upcoming dinner and dance where they will also officially celebrate the 40th anniversary of their club, the club invites any members of the community to come along and celebrate with them.

State Government to investigate and begin construction of an adequate road access to Cairns that bypasses the Kuranda Range by November 30, 2021.”

After receiving the resolution Ms Lui’s office confirmed they would be in touch with Kuranda Range Road Bypass committee chairman, Ken Harley.

Mr Harley however confirmed he’s had no contact from Ms Lui since he received a letter from the State MP on June 29.

“The resolution is a lawful, reasonable request from the Cook electorate for Ms Lui to act upon, and I would hope she presents the resolution at the next sittings in August,” Mr Harley said.

Residents see change in show holidays

A special service will be held in September to commemorate 100 years since the terrible Mt Mulligan mining disaster.

BY MICHAEL WARREN A NATIONAL disaster that rocked the very foundations of a small tight-knit Far North Queensland village will be commemorated during an upcoming event at Mount Mulligan.

A State miners service will be held on September 19 at Mount Mulligan to mark 100 years since a devastating explosion tragically killed 75 miners in the small township back in 1921.

An ensuing Royal Commission determined the accidental or untimely firing of an explosive charge on the top of a slab of coal caused the disaster.

“Following the 75th anniversary of the incident back in

1997 we have held numerous reunions of ex residents and have carried out a number of projects in the town and mine environs,” Mt Mulligan Ex Residents Committee secretary Ken Best said.

“A large number of ex residents and descendants are going to be at the one-hundred year event which is being organised as part of the Miners Memorial Day.” With the special anniversary just a few months away the former resident provided fascinating detail and insight about that fateful day back in 1921.

“Mt Mulligan was a happy community but on the Monday morning of September 19, 1921 a terrific blast from the mine sent the townspeople

running to the mine opening which told them what they all feared,” Mr Best recounted.

“The seventy-five men underground had lost their lives.

“Every home in the town was bereaved, fifty-six children instantly became fatherless.

“The school children lining up on the parade ground were the first to witness the black cloud and tremble of the explosion at 9.25am.

“The assistant school teacher also witnessed this from her position on the school verandah.

“At our 95th disaster commemoration we replayed the exact morse-code with its verbal message that was sent to Cairns at the time to alert emergency services of the dis-

aster.

“The last body was found five months later on February 9, 1922 after the mine had restarted production.”

More than 30 years later it was a sad day when the mine eventually closed down for good.

“I worked with several men who were school children at the time of the disaster and didn’t hear them speak of (the disaster).

“Mt Mulligan was a happy town and we were like a big family. We were saddened when the mine closed on October 28, 1957.

“I personally helped seal the mine and moved to Collinsville to work.”

CERTAIN residents within the Mareeba Shire will need to mark down some new show day holidays after council has recommended certain parishes public holidays be amended.

At Council’s latest meeting, they passed a motion requesting the Office of Industrial Relations change certain areas within the shire to different show holidays.

Doing this has allowed three separate areas of the Shire to be linked with the shows closest to them like the Atherton, Mossman and Cairns Show’s This means that areas closer to Atherton like Irvinebank which links to the Atherton Show will now have the Atherton Show holiday instead of the Cairns Show holiday.

The parishes of Irvinebank, Myosotis and Western, which links to the Atherton Show will now have the Atherton Show holiday.

The parishes of Mowbray, Salisbury, Riflemead and that part of the parish of Garioch located north of Hunter and Rifle Creeks, which links to the Mossman Show will now have the Mossman Show holiday.

Mareeba Shire Council area excluding the parishes of Irvinebank, Myosotis, Western, Mowbray, Salisbury, Riflemead and that part of the parish of Garioch located north of Hunter and Rifle Creeks, which links to the Cairns Annual Show will keep the Cairns Show holiday.

RFDS on frontline for vaccine delivery THE Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) has been assisting in delivering COVID vaccines to rural and remote communities, with over 1,200 doses being administrated.

The RFDS have been working in close collaboration with Commonwealth and State departments to support the roll-out of the vaccination program.

RFDS crews from Charleville, Mount Isa and Cairns have supported the delivery of the COVID vaccine to 22 remote communities across Queensland, including both first and second doses.

Chief Executive Officer Meredith Staib said the Flying Doctor was a trusted provider of primary health care services.

“In addition to the aeromedical retrieval of the critically-ill or injured, the RFDS also delivers regular primary health care clinics,” she said.

“This enables our staff to develop a close rapport with people living and working in rural and remote Queensland.

“We are pleased to assist the Hospital and Health Services and Primary Health Networks in facilitating access to the COVID-19 vaccine for remote and rural Queenslanders.”

The wall painting is the work of local Tableland artist, Terri Tanner, who calls herself a 'Jill of all trades.'

“I am a sign-writer, mural artist and on weekends I sell plants at the local markets,” Ms Tanner said.

“The project description was fairly open and I came up with the idea that I wanted the wall to look like an alfresco area at a cafe to give the room that indoor/outdoor feel for diners.

“I originally came here to repaint the menu boards, but Jo and Karen liked my work so much that the job just kept growing. I have re-painted the walls to make them look like clay

brick, added decorative shutters and am gradually refreshing the whole building,” she said.

“We wanted everybody to feel welcome when they stepped inside,” Ms Preston said.

“All our food here is made with love and we try and use our time with our customers in a positive way.

“We like to promote the attractions of the area and to support local businesses by stocking local produce, like Skybury coffee and Mungalli dairy products. Our pizzas are popular with locals and our gourmet sandwiches have been very well received,” she said.

The roadhouse is open seven days a week and provides a

full hot menu as well as a cold display of salads, sandwiches, cakes and fruit salad. They do scoop ice-cream and sell beautiful bunches of sunflowers, mixed box arrangements and fresh flowers all locally sourced.

They can even help those Karumba-bound fishing parties that have spent all morning packing cartons of beer, got to Ravenshoe and realised they forgot to get any bait or fuel up the ute.

For those heading in from the west, with its hectares of forest, creeks and open spaces, its motel, units, vans and camp sites make a great place to pull up and base yourself while you explore the surrounding Tablelands.

THE great range of immaculately presented cars and bikes on display delighted crowds at the third annual Innot Hot Springs Car and Bike Show, held at the town's Community Hall last weekend.

Car enthusiasts flocked to the venue from all around the north and beyond to admire a fascinating line up of age, beauty and power presented in all its polished perfection.

“We had just over 30 entries the first year, and the number doubled in the second year, but they were up around the 100 mark this year,” Mrs Haydon said.

port from spectators, especially considering COVID concerns, the caterers very quickly ran out of cool beverages and there was a mad scramble to restock. But the great live music, mega raffle, free entry and quality display on offer kept the crowdss happy and everyone was already looking forward to next year.

Christmas in July fun a success NOMADS from across the country descended on Mareeba over the weekend for the annual Christmas in July celebrations with 216 vehicles and roughly 350 people attending the fourday event.

Held at Davies Park in Mareeba Christmas in July welcomes the grey nomads who drive around the country often north to get away from the southern winters.

Christmas in July Coordinator Maureen Lane said that those who attended the event had a great time and would be returning next year.

“Everyone was happy with how it went down and all of the

activities we had,” she said.

“In general they were appreciative they could have their weekend.

“They all said they are coming back next year.”

Caravanners from all across the country came to attend the event including Diane Grant and Neale Soper who live their lives “permanently on the road.”

“We threw the house keys to the kids and said see ya later,” Neale said.

“We love our lives on the road,” added Diane.

Both Neale and Diane will be among the many who aim to return for the annual Christmas in July event next year.

Art from the Jabu Birriny exhibition portrays the stories and histories of Yarrabah’s traditional owners.

THIS week will be your last chance to see the special Jabu Birriny art exhibition as it resides in the Tablelands Regional Gallery until the end of July.

Meaning ‘land’ and ‘sea’, the exhibition brings together rich stories of lineal pasts and recent histories of Yarrabah’s traditional owners, the Gunggandji people.

Being a dynamic Aboriginal community surrounded by native bushland, mountain ranges, sandy coastlines and coral reefs, each artists bring their own unique approach to the canvas to convey their community’s cultural identity of the land and sea.

“Jabu Birriny (Land + Sea) celebrates the unique environ-

ment of Yarrabah and its ongoing importance to culture and people,” Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti said.

“The exhibition shares stories rich in lineal and recent histories through vibrant prints, intricately woven vessels and textured ceramics that embody the land and sea.”

A celebration of Yarrabah people and culture, Jabu Birriny invites visitors to experience the beautiful works from local artists of the Yarrabah Arts and Cultural Precinct.

The exhibition will close on July 31 for the last time before it is returned to the State Library of Queensland.

Mareeba man set to release new sci-fi novel MAREEBA rising author Sean “Niemand” Eales has recently released his latest Sci-Fi novel, where the main character, See, finds himself in a new universe of chaos and destruction.

Mr Eales has spent his life studying sociology, psychology, neurology, law and quantum mechanics and uses his knowledge from these studies for his novel.

His author name Niemand is the German word for “nobody” and through his journey with a brain infection he wrote “See the Insane”.

“When I had my brain operation I saw many things that changed my life and a lot of problems in the world have inspired it,” he said.

“The book is about bad angels that get humans to make AI and trap the human souls inside them in alternate realities.”

Mr Eales said that the book uses many themes that would appeal to a young adult audience and have many pop culture references.

Throughout the story, he said that his past in women and his exposure to “real world problems” has inspired him further to remind his readers the difference between lust and love.

gram, they donate money and/ or resources to local community groups like Days for Girls.

Days for Girls hand make reusable, washable hygiene kits for girls in underdeveloped countries to use with one pack having a lifespan of up to three years.

Owner/director of Community Funerals Stephen Oldham said that the kits the women at Days for Girls make are amazing and indispensable for the girls who need them.

“Days for Girls do amazing work and I am so impressed,” he said.

“This Community Spirit Program we set up is about supporting local organisations which are reaching out.

“All of these lovely local ladies that making these kits, will

never see the girls or rarely and yet they work so hard to produce these amazing kits.”

Days for Girls Mareeba Team Leader Lesa Moro was overwhelmed when she found out about the donation and was very grateful.

“It feels amazing, because we don’t go out asking for money donations,” she said.

“Word of mouth got back to Stephen and the crew and I got the phone call.

“The money has been very well received and we are extremely grateful.”

Spear Animal Reserve established in Kuranda YEARS of dedication to protecting regional flora and fauna has now been recognised, with Kuranda EnviroCare alongside Mareeba Shire Council publicly establishing the Speer Animal Reserve in Kuranda at their sign unveiling at the beginning of the month.

The 2.14 square hectares was bequeathed to Kuranda EnviroCare by the late Marjoie Spear, a compassionate conservationist in Kuranda.

“This property to pass to Kuranda EnviroCare on trust for the benefit of the public of Australia, through the promotion of the study and conservation of flora and fauna with the

land to be known as The Spear Animal Reserve,” was written on her will.

Kuranda EnviroCare Executive Denise Donald-Graham said that caring for the biodiversity in the region is of the highest importance.

“As a community we are mindful of the threats to the animals of our highly biodiverse region posed by habitat loss, increasing road traffic, inappropriate development and changing climate,” she said.

“How is essential habitat connectivity, so vital for resilience to climate, to be secured across a busy highway? How do we build upon Marjorie Spear’s

gift to the people of Kuranda?”

Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said that Council commends the owners of Spear Animal Reserve greatly.

“Council welcomes property owners who create conservation reserves on their properties,” she said.

“There is ongoing pressure on the natural environment and the actions by property owners to protect the flora and fauna on their land is applauded.”

Research done on the last 18 months at Spear Animal Reserve can be viewed upon request at the Kuranda EnviroCare library upon request at the nursery on 284 Myola Drive, Kuranda.

The street parade proved a popular attraction at the day-long Chillagoe Festival.

CHILLAGOE has enjoyed a timely and much needed economic boost with hundreds of patrons enjoying the welcomed return of the township’s highly popular day-long festival.

Accommodation was at a premium over the week-

end with the Observatory and Eco Lodge displaying the “no vacancy” sign as did the Tourist village with festival goers enjoying an array of attractions including a market and art exhibition, street parade, live music, a mock idol event and

an evening alliance dinner.

Entertainment acts, “Now or never” and “No Requests” wrapped up festivities with separate evening performances.

Event coordinator Lee Gordon said planning is already underway for a bigger and better event in 2022.

“With last year’s event being cancelled because of COVID public spacing restrictions it was absolutely wonderful to see Chillagoe shine with many locals and out of town visitors alike enjoying the festival,” Ms Gordon said.

“I feel so many people have been craving to attend events like this.

“We’ve all been forced to stay inside at various times over the past year so to get some sense of normality back by staging the Chillagoe festival felt fantastic.

“We’ve already starting planning next year’s festival.”

The skills and rules catching learner drivers out LEARNER drivers struggled to remember roundabout rules and master parallel parking according to new research from RACQ, prompting a reminder for novice drivers to prioritise plenty of practice.

Club spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said RACQ’s Young Driver Survey 2020 revealed 28 percent of learner drivers

found roundabout rules the hardest to learn or remember which was up from 13.7 percent in 2019.

“Rules around specific distances, giving way, stopping and cyclist rules were also the most challenging to young drivers,” Ms Ritchie said.

“It takes time to become a skilled and confident driver which is why it’s so important

learners clock up their 100 hours as a minimum, in a variety of driving conditions.”

Ms Ritchie said young drivers found parallel reverse parking the hardest skill to learn, with more than 40 percent of learners and 50 percent of P1 and P2 drivers saying it was the most difficult.

“There’s no doubt that par-

allel parking is stumping a lot of our young drivers, the response was overwhelming,” she said.

“Merging in traffic and right-angle parking were also high on the list.

“These skills might be daunting but it’s important young drivers feel confident doing them, so put the time

in to practice them again and again.”

Ms Ritchie said more than 42 percent of learner drivers said the better supervisor was a driving instructor, followed by mum, then dad.

“According to the research, it’s mum who’s doing more of the training behind the wheel and is the favoured expert

over dad,” she said.

“But it doesn’t matter who’s instructing, as long as you’re passing on the right information and setting good habits for young drivers.

So, if you’re about to teach a young driver, brush up on your own skills before you get into the passenger’s seat.”

RACQ has urged drivers to fill the tank at independent service stations offering the cheapest deals after it was revealed motorists in Australia’s five largest cities could have saved almost half a billion dollars by doing so last year.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released their latest fuel report which revealed in all capital cities, small chains and independents offered the cheapest prices for unleaded over the last four years.

RACQ spokesperson Clare Hunter said in Queensland independent retailers often held the most competitive

prices.

“Independent servos are regularly the ones offering the cheapest prices and during the high point in the price cycle they’re usually the ones to hold out with low prices the longest,” Ms Hunter said.

“The ACCC’s data shows buying from a United rather than a Coles Express for example would have saved a Brisbane motorist $174 last year.

“The presence of independents helps drive competition so we should give them our business when they’re the cheapest fuel around.”

Ms Hunter said the ACCC echoed RACQ’s position on the value of price monitoring

schemes like Queensland’s mandatory fuel price monitoring.

“It’s not a blanket rule that independent brands will always be the cheapest, some brands like Freedom Fuels are priced above average,” she said.

“That’s why it’s so important drivers shop savvy and use the real time fuel monitoring information available, like RACQ’s Fair Fuel Finder, to locate a good price to fill the tank.

“By applying that market pressure, you’ll be saving yourself at the pump, but also indicating to that retailer that you’ll reward them with your business.”

New distraction laws as mobile phone cameras rollout

QUEENSLANDERS have been warned mobile phone and seatbelt enforcement cameras have gone live from Monday, July 26 across the State as police rolled out new tactics to stem the loss of lives on our roads.

RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said the new enforcement measures would help save lives with driver distraction and a lack of seatbelt use both still major factors in crashes.

“Sadly, 29 people are killed each year in Queensland in crashes involving driver distraction and a further 43 people who lost their lives last year weren’t wearing a seatbelt,” Ms Smith said.

“Motorists snapped by the fixed and mobile cameras while not wearing a seatbelt or using their phone will be given a warning as part of a three-month grace period, before penalties are enforced from October.

“Those caught using a mobile phone while driving face a $1,033 fine and four demerit points, with double demerit points for second time offenders, while those snapped

not wearing a seatbelt face a $413 and 3 demerit points.”

Ms Smith also warned new regulations were being proposed around the definition of the use of a mobile phone while driving in Queensland.

“If these rules are passed later this month, it will be illegal for motorists to have a mobile phone on any part of their body while driving including on your lap or wedged between your body and the seatbelt – regardless of whether the phone is in use or not,” she said.

“There’ll be some exceptions, for example, if you’re using your phone to pay for goods and services at a drive through while the vehicle is stationary, if you’re using your phone under police direction such as showing a border pass or if the phone is in your pocket.”

Ms Smith said these proposed changes and the increase in enforcement was designed to catch those breaking the law and ultimately save lives.

“The easiest way to avoid getting caught is to not break the rules in the first place -

so if you’re driving set your phone to Do Not Disturb and leave it alone,” she said.

“More than 135 people have died on our roads in crashes already this year, so we’re asking drivers to do the right thing behind the wheel.

“We’re also pleased to see stricter drink driving reforms, including all first-time drink drivers will need to complete a mandatory education course in order to get their licence back and also welcome news the interlock program will be applied to first time mid-to-high-range drink drivers.

“We’ve been advocating for these measures for more than a decade to help reduce drink driving and improve road safety in Queensland.”

A three day auction sale of stud Brahman cows, the magnitude of which has never before been attempted in the Northern Australian cattle industry, broke records and exceeded all expectations at “Inverrio” Duaringa last week.

THE “Elrose” Stud Breeder Major Reduction Sale, which offered nearly 1000 lots over three big days, grossed $6,393,750 to make it the biggest, highest grossing, single vendor sale of stud cattle, ever in the history of the Australian cattle industry.

With buyer activity from as far away as the Northern Territory, New South Wales and all areas of Queensland, the quality females on offer, many with calves at foot, achieved an outstanding sale average of $6,920 per head with a total clearance of all lots.

But while the cattle on sale originated from the sale of a highly respected western stud operation based near Cloncurry, the auction was held at the Nobbs Cattle Company's selling complex in Central Queensland, much of the support for the sale came from North Queensland.

The strong buying support from northern bull breeders and commercial producers was noted as a feature of a sale which registered 97 individual buying entities.

Bidding was intense and highly competitive, with the sale’s four auctioneers, Troy Trevor, Nick Malone, Wayne York and Ken McCaffrey “dropping the hammer” at an average of just over a minute a lot.

Roland Everingham Jnr of Oak Park Station Einasleigh, was very active throughout the sale to put together an impressive line of 45 females with 42 calves at foot, bidding to $14,000 on two occasions for quality young cows with promising heifer calves by their sides.

Everingham Pastoral Company also invested in three of the Sale's proven sires, paying to a top of

Queensland Rural's Livestock Specialist, Shaun Flanagan and volume buyer, Roland Everingham from Oak Park Station, Einasleigh concentrate on the job at hand at the recent Elrose Stud Female Reduction Sale.

$15,000 for the imposing 5 year old grey Brahman bull, Elrose 15312.

Bill German of Hurricane Station, north of Mareeba, was another volume purchaser, bidding online to put together a significant draft of 24 lots of principally cow/calf units, which travelled north post sale to boost the quality of his breeding herd near Mt Carbine.

The Pedracini family of Lornevale Station, Georgetown said the sale provided a “chance of a lifetime” and were very happy with their draft of 11 head of cow/calf units, PTIC cows and heifers.

EXCEPTIONAL VALUE

Darren and Melissa paid to a top of $16,500 for cow/calf Lot 394, Elrose 14871 to average just over $10,645 per head. Their draft included Lot 171, a heifer purchased for $12,100 and a run of PTIC cows that averaged $6,000 per head.

Mrs Pedracini said the addition of these quality females would help take their own stud operation to the next level.

Charters Towers graziers Michael and Michelle Lyons of Wambiana Station spent just over $455,000, concentrating on quality cow and calf combinations. They purchased 63 cows, 59 of which came with calves to average $7,230.

Turley Cattle Company of Wandovale Station, Charters Towers also put together a good line of 47 cow/calf units, paying to a top of $16,000 for a draft that included nearly all bull calves at foot and pregnancy tested in calf again females. Their selection included the commanding $10,000 sire, Elrose 13399.

Overall, the 657 cow/calf units on offer, grossed $5,054,500 to achieve a top price of $28,000 and a $7,692 average. The 192 PTIC cows grossed $803,750, with a top price of $20,000 to average $4,168.

The draft of 61 unjoined heifers sold to a top of $16,000 to gross $291,500 and averaged $4,779 per head, while the 14 proven sires presented for sale sold to a top of $40,000 to achieve a gross of $245,000 and a very healthy average price of $17,500.

Keen volume buying support was evident with 13 individual buyers purchasing 20 or more lots at the sale.

“Purchasers clearly recognised the unique opportunity this genuine Reduction of Elrose females represented and backed it with very positive, sustained bidding,” Queensland Rural Manager, Troy Trevor commented.

McCaffrey's Australian Livestock Marketing principal and sale coordinator, Ken McCaffrey said they were still delivering the cattle to their new owners a week after the end of the sale and believed the sale's record results highlighted the current strength and positive outlook of the Australian beef industry.

Vendors Rodger and Lorena Jefferis wanted the industry to know that their enduring love of Brahman cattle mean't Elrose Stud would be continuing and they would be supplying the Lancefield Invitation and Big Country Brahman sales as well as their paddock sale clients from their new home base, “Brigalow” at Moura into the future.

At 20 years, of age, Hayden Pedracini, who grew up on Lornevale Station between Georgetown and Forsayth, was one of the youngest buyers at the recent Elrose Brahmans major reduction sale held on "Inverrio" near Duaringa.

MR Pedracini was a repeat buyer of Elrose cattle, having purchased his first ever stud females from Elrose's original dispersal sale in 2016.

“I bought six Elrose females not long after I started building my own stud. They were very fertile breeders with good udders and I didn't want to miss this rare opportunity to buy more of them when they came on the market,” he said.

Wishing he had more money to spend, Mr Pedracini secured three quality breeders with bull calves at foot, paying to a top of $15,950 for lot 105, a quality six year old Elrose cow with a seven and a half moth old bull calf by Elrose Living Proof at foot.

His draft also included a ten and a half month old bull calf by Elrose Decimal and an 8 month old junior sire by Elrose Top Notch 11412.

Mr Pedracini said he wants to keep buying good heifers and cows with an aim to produce quality, polled cattle that are fertile, have good eye muscle area and bone with plenty of length and depth.

“My goal is to breed a strong line of polled bulls to take to the Big Country sale in Charters Towers in the not too distant future." Following in the footsteps of the Lornevale stud, the young cattleman with an eye for genetics said he wants to produce big, framey, bullock breeding bulls,” he said.

Mr Pedracini has been selling bulls on the place to mainly Etheridge shire based clientele since 2016, but is sending his first draft of sale bulls, two red and two grey to the Gold City Brahman Sale in Charters Towers November 5, 2021.

Feral pigs proving a monster headache

Emerging industry leaders recognised LOCAL pineapple farmer siblings Ben Scurr and Courtney Thies have been jointly awarded the Australian Pineapple Industry’s Rudy Wassman Award, recognising them as pro-active future leaders in the industry.

Ben and Courtney work for Pinata Farms on their Mareeba farm, and have been growing pineapples since their childhood in Paddys Green.

They were recognised with the Rudy Wassman Award in recent weeks in Bundaburg at the Industry’s Golden Circle 2021 Pineapple Field Days.

Following in the footsteps of their father, Stephen Scurr, Ben and Courtney have continued the families pineapple growing legacy.

Ben and Courtney said they were honoured to be recognised by the industry and encouraged more young people to consider a career in farming.

“It's a great feeling to be recognised, especially as a female in a male-dominated field,”

Courtney said.

“It's very encouraging to receive support and acknowledgment from other growers and this gives me the drive to continue working hard and achieve more in the future.

“Young people are the next generation in the horticultural industry and the country is going to rely on us continuing to do what our predecessors have done.”

Ben said it was a privilege to have his efforts recognised by other growers and farms.

“We (young farmers) are next in line to keep farming going,” he said.

“More young people in farming means every industry can move forward and keep going in this ever-changing world.”

The siblings both have future aspirations in the pineapple farming industry with Ben hoping to one day manage the Mareeba farm and becoming more involved in Piñata’s pineapple production.

STATE Member for Hill Shane Knuth isn't surprised at news released by the ABC, that new research from the University of Queensland, reveals the environmental threat from feral pigs is far greater than previously thought.

The research showed that by uprooting carbon trapped in soil, it is estimated feral pigs are causing emissions to the equivalent of more than 1.1 million cars globally each year, with the bulk coming from Australia and New Zealand, who have massive feral pig populations. Lead author Dr Christopher O'Bryan believed this was a conservative estimate and could be three to four times higher.

“The research results verify what the KAP has been saying for years,” Mr Knuth said.

“We have been very vocal on the threat feral pigs not only pose to the environment but also to the GBR, native wildlife, in particular turtle and cassowary populations and the agriculture industry.

“Feral pigs have absolutely zero positive impacts on the environment. It is difficult to understand why so little is being spent by both State and Federal Government to eradicate this in-

vasive pest.”

Mr Knuth said estimates show that over 24 million feral pigs inhabit Australia, however this is likely to be substantially more as feral pigs produce two litters of up to four to ten piglets per year.

“We have more feral pigs in this country than humans and they are causing uncontrolled environmental damage,” he said.

Mr Knuth said the KAP had supported aerial pig shooting programs, petitions to open up state forests in Queensland for hunters and lobbied for millions more in funding to combat disease such as TR4 (Panama disease) and bounty programs as an incentive for recreational hunters.

“Right now, recreational hunters are our last line of defence. They hunt feral pigs on their own time and money, while the State Government ignores every funding proposal and advice we have delivered,” he said.

Mr Knuth said the KAP was strongly opposed to further restrictions on recreational feral pig hunting that may be proposed as part of the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001review being conducted.

Give the games back HEY there – hoopla – the circus is in town – but wait a minute it's really the 2032 Brisbane Olympics instead.

Far be it from me to pour cold water on the State Government's and Brisbane's bid for a big spend in the south easy, but let's take a bit of a rest and a few deep breaths before we get too excited.

The PM backed the bid, Premier Palaszczuk even risked two weeks of COVID isolation to go to Tokyo and state the case for the South East of the State to spend billions of taxpayers' money on this international sporting spectacular, but it all sounds a bit hollow to me.

Why? you might ask.

For one, there were no competing cities of countries. By their own recorded admissions, the IOC had no other bid before them. Qatar, Spain, India, Indonesia, a region in Germany signalled ealy interest but their bids did not advance to the IOC board approval stage.

In short Brisbane, Queensland and Anna Palaszczuk won a one horse race.

As for staging the Games for a mere $5 billion, there should be some serious doubt.

Refer if you will to much publicised cost over runs for governments and nations hosting previous Olympic Games (some of which were estimated to cost up to $20 billion for Tokyo).

Now for the State Labor Government's economic sleight of hand expected to fool the gullible.

Not so long ago, the Palaszczuk government hosted a State of Origin game in Townsville, paying the NRL a total of $8 million for the spectacle but receiving only $5 million back. Call me silly, but that equates to a loss of $3 million on one event alone.

But hang on, State Treasurer the not so honourable Cameron Dick believes he will cash in ticket sales and billions from sponsorships from, you guessed it, those greedy bloody business operators who run the top end of town, who incidentally, come election time, Labor insists are the REAL ones who are keeping us all poor.

Consider also that even though State Labor has been in power for over 28 of the past 30 years or so and have a good look at how the State deficit has blown out to around $100 billion in that time.

Not to mention the Health Department and Services debacle, Law and Order and Juvenile Crime running out of control, no major roadways, water supply, or reliable 24/7 power generation infrastructure installations for the money earning regional areas not located in the South East, and State Labor's continued poor economic performances and you can see why anyone who can

understand basic mathematics is more than wary of the smoke and mirrors that surround this one horse Olympic Games bid.

Give the Games back Anna, at least until your government has resurrected those areas of critical need that really should be attended to first.

Organic v chemical growing IN the real world of food growing, we are increasingly seeing a fight between Organic and Chemical food in our shops around our nation… the ascendancy of Organic can be easily seen, it is growing every day due to a human desire for clean chemical free food.

In my Fathers youth most foods were basically Organic, that’s how it was and no one worried about contaminated foods, in the fields of England we saw huge mounds of Cattle Manure steaming away in the cool air waiting to be spread on the soil for maybe a Potato crop.

Farmers still had a draught horse or two and a mixed farm with perhaps a few milkers, pigs, chickens, turkeys and ducks. They grew hay for when feed was short in winter plus a field of turnips or wheat. An apple orchard white with flower shone in the springtime sun with delicious apples like Bramley, Coxes Orange Pippin and Russets, the farms were often muddy but the center of natural life, and the Early Settlers brought it with them to this amazing land.

Of course, this style of farming flourished in those early days, but I guess it had to change as circumstances changed and farms grew ever bigger and farms took on mechanization after the industrial revolution.

Then ‘The Green Revolution’ changed everything with the use of artificial chemical fertilizers after World War Two… NPK fertilizers were made from the stockpiles of Bomb Making Chemicals left over from the war, but the very scientist who realized its potential said before his death, that NPK would NOT be good for the soil or the health of mankind in the long run.

The outcome of his prediction at this time, is degraded soils around the world plus food with proven lower nutrition levels and a population unable to resist disease with pandemics and a definite rise in non-communicable disease like Cancer and Parkinsons.

We desperately need to return to higher nutritive foods, it is not good enough to have beautiful looking, tasteless food that need sauces and spices to give them taste on our plate. Do Not

forget that ‘Our Food Is Our Health Giver and our Medicine’ and drugs are NOT the ultimate answer to the problem.

CLUB NEWS With Mareeba Lions Club THE Family Fun Metrogaine was once a great success with young and old enjoying the fun of the event. The event raised $4,774.05 for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

Mareeba Lions have now donated almost $39,000.00 to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation with the funds being raised primarily from the Metrogaine. The event could not be the success it is without the ongoing support of the incredible sponsors, and participants. Mareeba Lions believe every child deserves a chance at a healthy life.

The Club supported the Cairns to Karumba bike ride by cooking up lunch for the many participants. The group stops at the Mareeba aerodrome where the Club caters for every taste from vegetarian to meat lover. It is always a great occasion with the riders enjoying the chance for a break and a good meal before tackling the remaining 700 k of their journey.

The Club will also have a spot at Christmas in July on the 25th July, cooking up banana fritters and chicken kebabs.

Again, a very popular event which looks like being a beauty again this year.

Although the Rodeo

was a shortened event it was a great success, Club members assisted on the entrance gates and were very pleased with the new access arrangements.

It won’t be long and the Christmas cakes will be arriving and the big Christmas Raffle will be on the streets. In the past some people have missed out on their cakes because they have waited too long before purchasing. The Club only buys a certain number and when they are gone, they are gone. So if you see the cakes on sale best to grab them then and there.

Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion.

Ingredients ► 170g dark chocolate,

chopped ► 170g salted butter, cut into chunks ► 1/4 cup strong brewed coffee ► 4 egg yolks ► 1/2 tsp vanilla extract ► 2/3 cup caster sugar ► 1 tbsp rum ► 1 tbsp water ► 4 egg whites ► 1 tbsp castor sugar ► pinch of salt

Method 1. Create a double boiler out of a small saucepan filled with simmering water, and a medium bowl set over top. Place the chocolate, cubed butter and strong coffee in the bowl, and stir until melted and combined. Take the bowl off the heat, and let the chocolate cool slightly.

2. Fill a large bowl with ice cold water and set aside. Place the egg yolks, 2/3 cup of sugar, rum, and the water in another medium bowl and set over the simmering water. Using an electric hand whisk, whisk the yolk mixture until it’s thick and airy, ‘like runny mayonnaise’.

3. Remove the whipped yolk mixture from the heat, and place the bowl in the bowl of ice water. Gently whip until the yolk mixture is thick and cooled.

Fold in the chocolate mixture from step 1 into the egg yolk mixture.

4. Using a hand held whisk, whip the egg whites and salt in a clean bowl free from any grease, until soft peaks form. Sprinkle the tablespoon of sugar over the egg whites, and whip until stiff peaks form, and they’re thick and shiny. Add in vanilla.

5. Fold one third of the whipped egg whites into the chocolate mixture, and then fold in the remaining whipped whites until just incorporated.

6. Carefully pour the mousse into ramekins and refrigerate until firm, at least 4 hours or overnight.

Eureka Creek comes alive with weekend of non-stop fun FROM Thursday through till Sunday last week Eureka Creek near Dimbulah saw hundreds of competitors and spectators from across the region flocking to the small station for their annual campdraft, rodeo and races.

Due to the massive amount of competitor registrations this year the event had to be

stretched an extra day making it a four-day event.

Savannah Slam success THE second annual Savannah Slam was held at the Mareeba Tennis Club over the weekend with a host of players travelling far and wide to compete.

The event was established last year and was a resounding success, giving the Mareeba Tennis Club the right momentum to push forward for their second event.

Teams from Cooktown, Clifton Beach, Innisfail and Atherton travelled for a chance to play each other in the round robin tournament.

There was a record number of 24 teams split across the three grades available, special, A grade and B grade.

Event organiser Neale Searle said that the response to the Savannah Slam has been overwhelming with more teams registering than last year.

“It has been a really good response and we have more teams than last year,” he said.

“The teams were all really looking forward to this weekend.

“People really enjoy the format it’s more of a social format than usual tournaments.”

The Mareeba Tennis Club held their second ever Savannah Slam tournament over the weekend with great response from local and regional players.

Gulf Muddies player Jase Daniels tackling opposition player during the Laurie Spina Shield held recently.

Opportunities for young footballers YOUNG footballers from Normanton got the chance to get out of their comfort zones as they recently headed down to Townsville to play in the annual Laurie Spina Shield.

The shield is held every year and is a non-competitive competition between teams from across the far north, it focuses on preparation, fair play and enjoying the ‘greatest game of all’.

Usually, the kids in the Gulf

Muddies team never get to play anyone else outside of Normanton or Kurumba, but this time for the first time, they got to play peers from all around.

The high indigenous population in these areas makes it more challenging for players to be exposed to the game outside of their hometown making this tournament an exciting opportunity for them.

SPORT Kangaroos hop over Roosters CAIRNS Kangaroos have kept their finals chances alive following a 36-18 win over the Atherton Roosters in Sunday’s Cairns District Rugby League Deadly Choices round match played at Vico Oval.

Kangaroos set the pace early with four tries in the opening twenty minutes to lead 22-0.

The Roosters looked to have kick started their recovery when Ty Grogan crossed just before the halftime break.

But any chance of the Roosters saving the points was wiped soon after the restart when Kangaroos delivered two quick tries.

Another soon after gave the homeside a 36-6 lead with twenty minutes of play remaining.

However to their credit the Roosters finished full of running to grab two more tries through centre Gideon Larry and a second to Ty Grogan.

The Roosters under 18 side remain a top contender in the premiership race following their 36-10 win over Kangaroos on Sunday.

Centre Ryan Gallagher scored a double while Keyarn Porter, Dennis Sceibel, Aiden Carson, Clayton Dalgety and Matt Serra were the other try scorers. Kangaroos won the reserve grade 40-24 over the Roosters.

This Sunday the Atherton Roosters play the Yarrabah Seahawks at Yarrabah.

Bulls look towards busy end of season THE Mareeba Bulls are looking into the business end of the season with only a handful of games left as the Premier Mens fought for a draw in their recent match up against the Stratford Dolphins.

The Bulls travelled to Dolphin territory on Sunday night as they looked to take another win following their previous game against the Southside Comets.

It didn’t all fall the Bulls way

however as they managed to fight it out for a draw ending up 2 all at the final whistle.

The Bulls Premier Ladies have kept their sharp form despite suffering some injuries thrashing Innisfail United 5-0 in their Friday night match-up.

Coach Marcello Savaglio said that the girls are working hard and looking sharp heading into the “business end” of the season.

“At this stage we have to get the girls focused towards the business end of the year,” he said.

“We are just going through a patch where some of the ladies are carrying some little injuries.

“We are still in for a slight chance of winning the premiership but at this stage we just want to play every game on its merit.”

Gladiators fall to ladder leaders

Roosters Ty Grogan crossed for two tries at Vico Oval on Sunday.

THE Mareeba Gladiators have gone down in a vicious loss to current ladder leaders Cairns Brothers on their home turf over the weekend, losing 58-6.

With eight players already out with injuries the Gladiators suffered more losses with two players taken off the field within the first 10 minutes, both suffering head injuries.

This forced some of the newly debuted juniors to play more minutes than originally intended, however they did manage to hold their own.

Mareeba Gladiators captain/ coach Trent Barnard said that despite the outcome of the game it could have been a lot worse.

“It was a very tough game they are the benchmark of the

competition,” he said.

“It was a hard game for the boys but they didn’t give up.

“Credit to the boys they didn’t give up and fought right to the end, otherwise that score would have been closer to 90 points.”

Now the Gladiators will face Tully at home with only a handful of games left in the season.

Race club rallies behind the Dunn’s

LOOKING to repay years of support, the Mareeba Motorcycle Club will be hosting a special race day on Sunday, August 15 with all proceeds going to Kevin and Lucy Dunn of Mareeba Yamaha, longtime supporters and friends of the club.

Nearly a month ago Kevin and Lucy’s workshop which was attached to their Mareeba Yamaha business, Performance Motors, was burnt down in a youth crime arson incident.

Since the Dunn’s lost their workshop they have received a tremendous amount of community support, from friends and strangers alike.

Due to the support and encouragement Kevin and Lucy have received, they were able to secure a temporary location and start operating just days after the fire.

Kevin and Lucy have always supported the Mareeba Motorcycle Club and have been on hand to help at the “drop of a hat.”

“With Performance Motors, Mareeba Yamaha, Kevin and Lucy, anything that needed to be done at the track, it was done at the drop of a hat,” Mareeba Motorcycle Club president Kim Grothues said.

“I thought why can’t we do something for them at the drop of a hat.

“For people that have really got the communities best interests at heart… this is just a really small way of saying thanks and supporting them as they have supported us.”

Mr Grothues also works for Kevin and Lucy at Performance Motors and has expressed his distress at the “heartbreaking” situation.

“To see something like this happen to such nice people, it’s just heartbreaking,” he said.

“Even if it’s just something small we can do, we’re happy to do it as a way of saying thanks.

“Basically everything we get we can hopefully give to Kevin and Lucy, compared to what they lost this is just a small drop in the ocean.”

Mrs Dunn has made a point to personally thank each and every person that has offered their support during this trying time and wants to reiterate the fact that they are very grateful for the continued support they receive.

“We had lots of people coming in to help us move stuff, different businesses dropping in and just offering their help,” she said.

“A lot of people get the perception that insurance covers everything but you’ve built up a business for 25 years, not only do you lose all your spanners but you’ve lost your life,” Mr Dunn added.

“25 years of blood, sweat and tears that you build up to hopefully leave something for your kids or leave something for your retirement, we’ve got absolutely nothing,” Mrs Dunn continued.

“It took us 25 years to build up the business and within 25 minutes she was done and dusted, it’s devasting and heartbreaking.”

Both Kevin and Lucy have expressed their utmost gratitude and thanks to everyone who has supported them through this difficult time, including the Mareeba Motorcycle Club.

All proceeds from the special race day will be going directly to the Dunn’s as they still reel from the incident and try to fully get back on their feet.

Numerous businesses from around town have been offering up items and vouchers for the club to raffle off during the event.

Motorcycling Queensland has even jumped on board saying that they will help foot the costs of the nomination fees on the day, the race day is set to start around 8am with presentations hoping to be done at 2pm.

You do not have to be a member of the Mareeba Motorcycle Club to get on the track and raise funds for the Dunn’s, all you need is a MA license.
