LOCAL Stroke Foundation advocate Nicola Baker has made it to the Stroke Awards finals for 2022 for the best fundraiser of the year.

Through a Blue Tie Ball and being a part of the TV show “Adventure All Stars”, Ms Baker has found many ways to fundraise for the cause, with her team raising nearly $10,000 a month for the cause.

Ms Baker has been involved with the Stroke Foundation through her charity Moyamoya Australia, which she created after her son’s diagnosis when he was only a few months old.

“It’s been a huge part of our life and now we are helping raise awareness for the disease through our charity,” she said.

“Because Moyamoya causes strokes, we want to help over 100,000 people diagnosed with the disease through raising funds and awareness.

“We are particularly promoting the FAST program, which helps people identify when someone is having a stroke by looking into their movement and speech and what to do.”

Ms Baker expressed her humbleness and gratitude to be recognised as a finalist for the event and is excited to head down for the awards event on 4 May.

Atherton man on Ukrainian medical mission AN Atherton pilot has found himself at the front of the war in Ukraine as part of a medical mission that provided life-saving surgeries to children as young as seven days’ old in the city of Lviv.

David Keough accompanied the medical mission with just two days’ notice, according to Dr Clementine Vo who emailed The Express from Los Angeles to advise of Mr Keough’s involvement so he could receive the “recognition that he deserves back at home”.

“On 12 March, Mr Keough jumped on a plane with me and several other medical practitioners,” Dr Vo wrote.

“Along with several suitcases packed with medical supplies, we ventured and made our way from Los Angeles, California to Munich, Germany, and eventually to Krakow, Poland.

From there, we drove via bus to Lviv, Ukraine.”

The city of Lviv is located in the far west of Ukraine and 70km from the Polish border.

The city was thought to be a safe haven for thousands of refugees who made their way there from other places in Ukraine until late last month when air raid sirens disrupted the relative peace they had enjoyed since the war with Russia began.

Russian missiles hit an oil depot and a de-

fence facility in residential parts of the city, causing injuries and considerable damage to infrastructure. Just last week, at least seven people died after another bombardment from Russian forces.

Dr Vo said during their stay there, Mr Keough helped her and other medical physicians and nurses provide life-saving surgeries to children as young as seven days old.

“You might wonder what a pilot is doing on a medical mission trip - he acted as a medical assistant, specifically as my anaesthesia assistant, and I found him extremely helpful,” she said.

“He made our jobs a lot easier, and we felt much safer with David around.”

Dr Vo said she was prompted to contact the newspaper when she noticed a copy of The Express on his table and wanted to make sure that he received the recognition he deserved.

“His sister from Cairns came out last week to visit and brought his mail and, with it, The Express,” she said.

Candidates hit the campaign trial

POLITICAL candidates for Kennedy had their first hit out last week as they gathered in Atherton on for a “Meet the candidates” luncheon and debate.

Hosted and run by Advance Cairns, the luncheon brought together ALP candidate Jason Brandon, LNP candidate Bryce Macdonald, United Australia Party candidate Peter Campion, Greens candidate Jennifer Cox and incumbent member, Bob Katter.

The candidates were each given three minutes to address the gathered 30-strong crowd about what they believe were the biggest issues in Kennedy before the floor was opened up to questions.

Through the event, it became clear that housing and road links from the Tablelands to Cairns were standout topics, with all candidates agreeing both issues need actioning.

“Every single council that I’ve been through we’ve talked about the fact that there is not enough housing,” Mr Brandon said.

“It’s about community or social housing, it’s a key thing that we need to do to get people in the houses that need it and with that, the Labor Party has got 10,000 houses for frontline workers as well.”

But Mr Macdonald said to supply new housing stock would mean a solution has to be found to address the shortage of skilled tradespeople.

“There is a shortage of tradespeople to build a house – every house you need a carpenter, plumber, roofer, concreter and there is a shortfall and we’ve got to find a solution to that as well,” he said.

Mr Katter linked the solution for additional housing to the development of his Bridle Track proposal which he claims will open up 20,000 hectares of land for subdivisions.

Greens candidate Jennifer Cox, Labor’s Jason Brandon, incumbent member Bob Katter, LNP candidate Bryce Macdonald and UAP candidate Peter Campion had their first hit out last week at the Advance Cairns meet the candidates luncheon.

“As far as housing goes, you punch the Bridle Track tunnel, there is 20,000 hectares of subdivision ready.”

Mr Campion told the crowd that the current housing crisis wasn’t solely due to a lack of housing, but in part, due to foreign ownership.

“In part, it’s about our foreign ownership rules – if we’re building residences, we really need them to be occupied,” he said.

“We have a plan to return 25 per cent of the wealth created by regions to the regions to have a zoneable tax rebate of 20 per cent and to encourage regional development as much as possible.

“There are lots of things we can do but we have to shake off the globalist organisations that are directing our ma-

jor parties and causing the ruin of this nation.”

According to Ms Cox, the Greens plan to build one million homes in 20 years, saying “everyone deserves an affordable place to live”.

“It’s caused by consecutive governments not putting any public housing in for many years and the fact that the State Government has actually sold off 1,400 public houses and properties in Queensland,” she said.

“Privatising social housing through the first homeowners’ grants has only inflated the market, it has increased house prices, it has locked a whole generation out of home ownership and decreasing deposit requirements or taking super for deposits only puts people fur-

ther in very dangerous levels of debt.”

A question from the floor by young university student Gullara McInnes on what measures would be taken by each candidate to manage traffic flow between the Tablelands and the coast brought a surprising response from Ms Cox who suggested the Cairns Airport should be relocated to Mareeba.

“Obviously we need to fix the current infrastructure on the Kuranda Range road to deal with it – there’s lots of big idea but it needs it now so we need to widen that road and support that bridge (Barron River),” she said.

“In the long-term I think it would be a really good thing to build a commuter train from Mareeba to Cairns and considering climate change is coming,

we’re probably going to have to move the Cairns Airport considering that we claimed land from the mangroves.

“We will probably have to put the airport up in Mareeba and it’s been discussed for many years.”

Mr Macdonald reiterated his position the range road issue, saying while he supported the creation of an alternative route, the solution was in the hands of engineers.

“I’m not an engineer but I certainly support the fact that we need to open up not only the Tablelands but the Gulf. I am fully supportive of a Kuranda Range road alternative route but engineers do all that sort of stuff.”

Mr Katter stood and addressed the lunch, stressing that his Bridle Track proposal was undoubtedly the best alternative route to link the two areas.

Mr Campion is also on record as favouring a particular route which involves a 7km surface road from the Kennedy Highway near the Davies Creek turnoff, connecting to a 17km, gently sloped tunnel emerging at Ray Jones Drive.

He claimed his proposal was the only option to date that would pay for itself.

In his response, Mr Brandon referred to last week’s Labor’s recent announcement it would upgrade the Kuranda Range Road.

“Labor announced $210m to do upgrades on the Kuranda Range Road and there is also a feasibility study into what we can do moving forward so Labor is doing something to actually fix it, not just talking about it,” he said.

The candidates will meet again for the second round of their election battle in Mareeba this Thursday at the Mareeba Soccer Club.  MORE ELECTION NEWS P11

Bugler honours military bonds A LOCAL corrections officer with a generational history with the Australian Armed Forces was given the honour of playing the bugle for the Anzac Day dawn service held at the Mareeba cenotaph on Monday.

Terry O’Brien, his father and grandfather have all served in the Australian Armed forces across multiple wars including WWII and the Vietnam War. “As we all got to that age we just thought we thought we could make a contribution to our country, it became a bit of a rite of passage,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I grew up with stories of faraway places, adventure and bravery.

“In my family there is always belief that you’ve got to put something into the family to grow it and make it important, it’s just part of who we are.”

Mr O’Brien was incredibly honoured to be given the privilege of playing the bugle at Mareeba’s Anzac Day Dawn Service on Monday, understanding the weight of such an honour.

When he was 18 years old, Mr O’Brien had the incredible opportunity to play the bugle in Canberra on Anzac Day, surrounded by veterans commemorating their comrades’ sacrifices.

“As I started to play, it came to my mind that those were the names of every Australian solider that had died in war in Australia’s history,” he said.

“And those people that were gathered around when the last post was being sounded were there when their brothers in arms were standing with them.

“Because of that day, I wasn’t able to play the bugle until seven months later, it had such a profound effect.”

Double gold for Kuranda gin

BY ELLIE FINK A SMALL distillery hidden in the hills of Kuranda has taken out a double gold in the San Francisco Gin Awards only months after its first release on the market.

Neddy and Christian Bedwell from Distil on the Hill created their mandarin and pepper gin late last year and have developed it to perfection and have already received a silver in the World Gin Awards.

A double gold is when all of the judges on the judging panel awards the spirit with a gold, meaning they are some of the finest gins in the world.

Neddy expressed her excitement in winning the double gold, amazed by how well their pride and joy did in such a prestigious competition.

“We are so excited to achieve this in the limited time we have been in the industry and the San Francisco awards we respect so highly, being the world’s largest spirit competition,” she said.

“We are just so humbled to see our gin up there with the finest of spirits.

“They sent us a congratulation email a few days before releasing it to the public, we were so excited to share the news after it went live on their platform.”

The distilling couple describe their gin as a “a London Dry style gin that flirts with an exquisite infusion of juniper, mandarin and exotic long pepper, creating a perfect balance of sweet and spicy” which was highly enjoyed by a calibre of expert judges.

Their newest Raspberry Macadamia gin was also awarded a silver in the San Francisco Gin Awards, with the gin only being the shelves for a few months.

As Distil on the Hill grows, the couple plan to release a sloe gin later this year, upgrading their cellar space as well as being a part of the first-ever FNQ Gin Festival, set to be held in Cairns on Saturday 11 June.

Tin mining set for big return

BY ROBYN HOLMES GRAND plans are underway to reintroduce tin mining in the region after 18 months of exploration drilling by the Tablelands Mining Group uncovered good deposits of the metal.

The company now plans to forge ahead with constructing a processing plant at its holdings that are within a 30km radius of Mt Garnet.

Tablelands Mining Group had been focused on its iron ore operations at its Mt Lucy, Mt Paddy and Mt Ruby mines but in the past 12 months, had “pivoted” and was targeting a long-term development approach to its activities.

“We have done a lot of studies and a lot more exploration drilling and have been largely focused on that so no production has come out of those mines for two years now,” managing director Anuj Timblo said.

“But we are very excited but the results of our drilling on our tenements around Mt Garnet which have shown very good tin deposits.”

The price of the humble metal has gone through the roof over the past few years – from $13,000-$14,000 a tonne to $43,000 a tonne in today’s market. It rose by 79 per cent in 2021.

The spike was driven by a shortage resulting from a sharp demand from the electronics sector, where tin is used for circuit board manufacturing, and for making batteries and as a solder for joining solar cells.

At the same time demand picked up, global output was insufficient. China produces five times as much of the white metal as Australia but the world’s largest underground tin mine, Renison Bell, is located in Tasmania. It is the only producer of tin in Australia.

The Tablelands has also played an important part in tin’s history, with the former Great Northern mine in Herberton once the largest tin field in the world.

And within 3-5 years, the Tablelands could be producing the metal again.

“Tin is critical for a green future because it is used in manufacturing of batteries and as a

soldering metal for just about all technological devices,” Mt Timblo said.

“The scarcity of tin is front and centre in mining circles. And to supply tin from a developed country with a strong pedigree in mining is good for the world.

“Indications are very promising for the Tablelands region – given the price, it’s now a very promising situation and we believe the price will continue to climb,” Mr Timblo added.

Drilling to date has yielded good results for tin but in an added bonus for the company, excellent deposits of iron ore have also been identified that can be unlocked with the tin.

“Iron ore remains a highly sought-after metal given its use in renewables and the like – everything needs steel,” he said.

“But the other great thing is the type of iron ore which is magnetite – very different from iron ore that is mined in Western Australia which is hematite.

“It is the most conducive to ‘green’ steel manufacturing because it saves 30 per cent on energy to smelt magnetite versus hematite.”

Iron ore mined extracted from the sites will be transported to Port of Mourilyan.

QCWA promotes healthy living GIVING their iconic morning teas a healthy makeover, Mareeba’s Country Women’s Association (QCWA) has introduced their country kitchen, serving up slices and muffins with healthy alternates.

The Country Kitchen is a project aimed to help people adopt a healthier lifestyle, teaming up with dietitians and nutritionists to ensure a better future.

Member of the Mareeba Branch, Margery Jones took on the initiative with her love for cooking to help for the better of the community’s health.

“One of the members here, Daphne Martins, heard about the Country Kitchens and because I like cooking, I thought it would be right up my ally as I am retired and was looking for something to do in my spare time instead of going bonkers,” she said.

“I joined, I did the training and now we are being let loose in the community to help promote healthy eating and better wellbeing.

“We are promoting five messages, one is to eat more fruit and vegetables, cooking at home to save money and so you know what goes in it, portion sizes because it is easy to overeat if there’s not enough protein and not being reliant on fast food like McDonalds.”

Ms Jones says country women has been known for their craft and their cooking skills and hopes to combine it with years of expertise behind us them and educate the younger generation.

“It’s so easy to go to Coles or McDonalds and just buy pre-packaged food and you don’t even have to lift a finger to cook it and we hope with the country kitchen we can teach people to become more independent in their cooking,” she said.

To help with the introduction to the country kitchen, the QCWA has been donated a new stove oven, fridge and freezer, laptop and cordless vacuum through the Gambling Fund to utilise when conducting activities.

FROM small town girl to one of Queensland’s most influential young women, Dr Tahnee Bridson has another trophy to add to her shelf, being awarded the First National Real Estate Leadership Award as part of the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards for 2022.

Dr Bridson is the founder of Hand-n-Hand Peer Support Inc – a support outlet for medical workers across the country struggling with their mental health.

Her motivation behind the campaign stemmed from the loss of her colleague and friend Dr Bestmann, who tragically lost his battle with mental illness.

After Dr Bestmann’s passing, Tahnee established her new volunteer driven program in 2020, to support doctors, nurses

and other healthcare workers, all who are at a higher risk of burnout and suicide.

In the past, Tahnee has said that Dr Bestmann was a true mentor to her and encouraged her to create an outlet for medical workers who also need the support they give.

“Dr Bestmann was my GP growing up and then also became my mentor when I did placement with him as a medical student,” Tahnee said. “When we lost him to suicide that was the first realisation that mental health was a really big problem in doctors and healthcare workers.”

Starting out as just a small Whatsapp group chat has now become a 2000-person support group of health workers from all areas coming together.

A resort on the outskirts of Mareeba is set to be revived after the developer announced a reviewed opening date.

Ruined resort set for revival

A MULTI-million-dollar Mareeba resort that has sat vacant and seemingly abandoned for the past two years is set to be revived, with the developer announcing a new opening date just a few years away.

Located on Fichera Road, Mareeba at the DeBrueys Winery, the resort is set to contain 27 blocks of four cabins, totalling 108 rooms in addition to the winery.

The resort was the idea of international developer Benny Wu and was initially aimed at the international market, but the plan changed to a 50/50 split between domestic and international markets in the wake of the Covid pandemic.

Since the pandemic hit the resort has seemingly been abandoned with the doors splintered and falling off hinges, exposed wiring, rusting metal frames and mould creeping through the resort.

The initial construction phase of the development caused quite a stir with surrounding residents, one family even choosing to leave their “forever home”

due to the development.

Nicky Tilse and her family moved out of their Fichera Road home after three decades – a difficult decision given the home was the place she associates with her children’s first steps.

“I hate it (the development), it’s one of the main reasons we moved,” she said.

“It was our little piece of paradise, our forever home.

“We just had to deal with it, what can you do – it was going to be constant, so we just thought ‘get out’.”

Now months after leaving their home, the development is still nowhere near completion and won’t be until another two years.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, the development has encountered numerous obstacles causing delays in construction.

A spokesperson for DeBrueys Winery said the resort’s opening had now been set for May 2024, and would be seeking to attract local and international travellers.

New group to run festival MAREEBA’S popular Multicultural Festival has a new committee and is seeking a professional event coordinator to help steer this year’s event.

The 23rd Mareeba Multicultural Festival will be held on 28 August with a theme of “Cultural Foundations”, featuring dance and music by hundreds of performers from many different cultures along with food showcasing a range of cuisines from around the world.

Mareeba Shire Council last week approved the new advisory committee, with Councillor Mary Graham named as chair and Francesco Avolio, Giuliano Cordenos (who instigated and ran the festival for many years), Fred Cristaldi, Sabrina Liaver, Milabelle Krauss, Fatima Metou, and Iuto Patolo appointed as members.

’VE been living in the USA for the last four years, working as an airline pilot.

I grew up in Atherton where my parents still live and have other siblings in Cairns. I met my fiancé Clementine Vo a year and half ago here in LA where we are both based.

When the conflict started in Ukraine, I had been following the media reports in the lead up, my fiancé and I, along with the majority of thinking/feeling individuals, felt outrage, horror, disbelief and sympathy and compassion for the people involved in the unfolding situation.

Clementine was quick to suggest buying a plane ticket and flying straight over there in the very early stages. I didn’t pass off her enthusiasm and suggested that despite just simply feeling like helpless onlookers at the time, that in due time there would be organised outreach for volunteers of various persuasions to address differing needs.

She didn’t have to wait long. Probably around two weeks after the invasion, she informed me of a Facebook message from Dr Bill Novick of Cardiac Alliance, reaching out for medical personnel to travel to eastern Europe for a medical mission trip.

Initially she informed me that they were to be working at a hospital in Poland. I immediately thoughtful of travelling with her but wasn’t specifically worried if my circumstances didn’t allow that, with the team being stationed in Poland.

But the information soon came through that they would be in fact travelling over the border to Ukraine. And more specifically to perform lifesaving paediatric heart surgeries for six sick kids at a children’s hospital in Lviv.

Once that information was realised, Clementine didn’t hesitate to put her hand up as that is her area of expertise working at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.

This changed my thinking to “I definitely have to go!” to make sure she was okay being there for

I asked her if a flight ticket for me could be organised and discussion soon turned to what I could actually do there in Lviv. The Cardiac alliance team was aided and funded in part by the Children of War foundation based in LA. Within a week or so we were on a plane to Krakow via Munich and onto Lviv in a coach.

It was about 24 hours non-stop travel arriving in Lviv to air raid sirens at 4am.

We passed by checkpoints and anti-tank steel hedgehogs along the main highway from the Polish border to Lviv, also passing by within miles of where the first Russian missiles had landed merely 24 hours earlier – the closest at that stage that far west and close to the Polish border, killing some 30 people.

There was a little apprehension but Dr Novick, a respected cardiac surgeon from Tennessee and founder of Cardiac Alliance, isn’t easily rattled having performed paediatric heart surgeries in various conflict areas and war zones around the globe including the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans.

We had to wait to be greeted by the young Ukrainian resident surgeon, Vitali, until he thought it was safe a little after 4am.

We gathered bleary-eyed the next morning for what was going to be preparation to start a case but another medical team that had fled Kharkiv and Kyiv earlier had relocated there so there was some reorganisation of who was doing which cases.

Clementine had stocked me with my own sets of “scrubs” and so I looked like part of the team and basically helped her organise all the boxes and suitcases of medical equipment we had brought with us.

Setting up to be an anaesthetist in a foreign country with a team you haven’t worked with before with a language you don’t understand has its pressures.

“We had a new appreciation of what we have in western countries and of the ‘first-world’ problems we think are problems but really aren’t when compared to other parts of the world” I’d never been in an operating room before so I was new to the surroundings but found it fascinating observing and helping my fiancé set up and go to work.

She did a heart surgery case the next day which I got to watch. Prior to that, she was inspecting various medical equipment which was all written in Ukrainian so I helped her with Google translate camera function to figure which self-tests to run and which buttons and switches did what!

Throughout the case, I would run back down to our accommodation and gather various other bits and pieces she would need and bring them back to the OR. It was fascinating to watch the surgery being performed and Dr Novick mentoring the young Ukrainian surgeon Vitali.

It was a tiring first few days as they launched

straight into surgeries and Clementine appreciated me being there also as an emotional support with the added pressure and stress of unfamiliarity.

I would have liked to explore and travel out of the hospital grounds with a reporter from KTLA news who travelled over with us, to see if there were other ways I could make myself useful, but we were told it would be better not to draw any undue attention to ourselves seeing as though there were multiple attacks on hospitals further east in the country.

On the off days from surgery, Clementine would help out in the ICU and on the third day, they had an open heart case which I also got to watch and helped intubate the three-year-old patient.

It was eye opening to be a part of her world and see medical professionals at work and up close,

having had my fair share of surgeries.

Throughout our week stay there (we were accommodated at the hospital), the air raid sirens frequently sounded day and night. At the end of the week, the team was wrapping up a case when half of us had to pack within 30 minutes and jump in an ambulance and dash to the Polish border to beat the curfew.

Volunteer ambulance drivers who ferry medical supplies to Lviv and refugees out back to Poland had kindly offered five of us a ride back to Poland as any transport was difficult to find.

They were three kind guys two from Norway and one young man from Poland risking their lives to help. They had to get us out before a 10pm curfew and they talked about driving supplies back to Kyiv the next day, which at the time

was still under attack.

We made it to Poland by 1am and found out the next morning that the airport in Lviv had been attacked with missiles which was about five miles from where we were at the hospital.

All in all, we got back to LA grateful at the timing of getting out of the country as we had heard some refugees had taken up to five days to cross the border.

Also, we had a new appreciation of what we have in western countries and of the “first-world” problems we think are problems but really aren’t when compared to other parts of the world and what some communities have to deal with – where food is scarce and their country is being bombed and destroyed. And perhaps more thought of going back against some stage.

ASBESTOS CEMENT PIPE RENEWALS

To date, approximately 15 kilometres of asbestos cement (AC) pipe renewals have been completed as part of Council’s project to replace failing pipes that service an estimated 11,000 residents. These works have been conducted in Kuranda, Mareeba and Mt Molloy.

Wolfram Road has experienced a three-fold increase in commercial traffic since 2008 and Council prioritised this project to ensure the road can cater to this demand. With funding from the federal government’s Roads to Recovery program, Council has widened the road to a sealed width of 7.5m and made changes to the culverts and embankments.

The 210 metre stretch of road is now ready for final trim and sealing and Council is sure that the users of Wolfram Road will be pleased with the finished product.

Mareeba Shire Council manages an extensive transport network within the Shire, with more than 2,300 kilometres of the 3,000-kilometre road network managed directly by Council.

NEW SEWAGE PUMP STATION ONE STEP CLOSER

The sewage pump station at Granite Creek in Mareeba was built in 1965 and was identified for replacement following condition assessments on Council’s wastewater assets. Funded by Mareeba Shire Council, the replacement of this asset will ensure that the catchment area will continue to receive a reliable wastewater service long into the future.

Servicing all of the Mareeba township, south of Granite Creek, the new pump station that will meet current standards and the expected future growth of the township. The project is progressing according to plan, with the removal of the previous red brick building and the internal walls now sealed to ensure that they are at the required operating standard.

FREE GREEN WASTE DAYS A SUCCESS Council acknowledges all residents who took advantage of the recent free green waste disposal days at local Transfer Stations with an impressive number of loads delivered.

The upgrade of the water main in Mareeba North is part of the project and the current work is being undertaken with funding from the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program.

The project will result in the replacement of the existing water main with 100mm PVC Supermain, in addition to new service connections, valving and hydrants and is continuing along Hampe Street in Mareeba.

Calls for age pension, housing costs changes

Range pledge A PLEDGE to spend $210 million on a program of safety and resilience upgrades to the Kuranda Range Road has been announced by Labor candidates for the Leichhardt and Kennedy electorates.

Labor’s Elida Faith, standing for Leichhardt, and Jason Brandon, contesting the Kennedy electorate, said only an Albanese Government would deliver essential safety upgrades along the Kuranda Range Road, as well as undertaking the important planning work to guide long-term upgrades.

The upgrades would include guard rails, widened shoulders and increased protection against weather impacts and land slippages.

“Locals in Kennedy spend a lot of time on the road, but under the Morrison Government, our infrastructure is going backwards,” Mr Brandon said.

“For people heading into Cairns, this investment will be a gamechanger. This is a great announcement for our region, and only an Albanese Labor Government will deliver it.”

Ms Faith said the road was getting busier as a major access from the northern Tablelands to the coast and needed investment.

“If you are heading west from Cairns, chances are you are taking the Kuranda Range Road. Locals know that the road is getting busier, but the infrastructure isn’t keeping up,” she said.

Labor’s candidate for Kennedy Jason Brandon, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Catherine King, and Leichhardt candidate Elida Faith announce the $210 million pledge.

Douglas aquatic park promised A SAFE year-round swimming facility is on the way for Douglas residents as the Morrison Government is investing $5 million to deliver the Port Douglas Aquatic Park.

The park will include an all-access pool and a contemporary zero depth nature water play area and will be delivered in partnership with the Douglas Shire Council.

Over 200 jobs will be created during the construction phase and a continual 30 jobs once the park is completed.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the

delivery of the new aquatic park was sorely needed by the Douglas community.

“This is a much-needed project for the Port Douglas area with the only pool available to the public closing in late 2019,” he said.

“The lack of a safe, year-round swimming facility has certainly had negative impacts on the community and tourists who visit the area.

“This project, once completed, will certainly improve the liveability of locals and provide a safe swimming space for visitors to the region.”

MEMBER for Kennedy Bob Katter has come out swinging in the first week of the election campaign, calling for changes to the age pension and to charges associated with developing blocks of land.

Mr Katter is pushing for the age pension to be boosted by $100 a week so seniors can deal with the soaring cost of living.

To pay for the $14 billion a year policy, he wants the Federal Government to place a five per cent surcharge on all imports into Australia which would generate $20 billion a year and give Australian industry and workers a competitive advantage.

“If you want to buy something from China instead of Australia, then you should pay five per cent more for it,” Mr Katter said.

“It might teach people to buy Australian made and not from overseas.

“People who have worked their whole lives for our nation can’t afford to live on the age pension payment they are getting now. Some people on the pension did not have superannuation for most of their working life.

“Single pensioners can currently earn $180 a fortnight before their pension is reduced. I think that figure should be increased so that pensioners can work if they want to, without being penalised.”

To tackle the current housing and rental crisis, Mr Katter is calling for changes to the charges put on every block of land by State and local governments.

He also says developing the Bridle Track link to the coast would allow families to make a choice to live on the Tablelands where there are larger lots of land available.

“In my view, 300 square metre housing blocks are no place for families to grow up in,

and it’s time to end slum housing developments in Far North Queensland,” he said.

He says the Bridle Track Tunnel must be built from Cairns to the Tablelands to allow people to buy acreage housing blocks around localities like Koah, Speewah and Davies Creek.

Mr Katter believes the Federal Government should intervene in the process of subdivisions in what he described as a failure of State and Local Governments.

“The restrictions and requirements of subdivisions have jacked up the price of a block of land to over $100,000 to $200,000,” Mr Katter said.

“The costs of curbing, channelling, headworks charges etc. have made the costs astronomical.

The cost to construct a house has also risen, you need to put scaffolding around it during construction which costs $25,000, and you must have insulation now which costs $50,000.

“The Federal Government is handing out money for people to build houses which means demand is increasing but supply is decreasing.

All this does is increase property prices.

“The Federal Government should step in and address the supply of housing by creating acreage block subdivisions without all the restrictions and requirements under the State and Local Government rules.

“Charters Towers used to be under the Mining Act, and we had no restrictions on subdivisions and a block of land cost you $7,000.

When we went under the restrictive State and Local Government Act, the price of a block went through the roof to $140,000 then settled back to $70,000.

“The restrictions are increasing the cost of land by 10-fold.”

A PASSIONATE Einasleigh local is on a mission to compile information, photos and artefacts about the old mining town to open a museum, showcasing its rich history.

Einasleigh Hotel leasee Bianca Brooker put the call out on Facebook for any and all information pertaining to Einasleigh, especially its glory days, to be presented in a new museum.

The idea for a museum was born after the hotel was gifted an old shed from the railway, which now rests down near the fire station.

“We were throwing around a few ideas and I’ve always wanted to get a museum happening, so that’s what we decided we were going to do with it,” Ms Brooker said.

“Try and get the local history, the people, the mining and everything out there so people know what Einasleigh was actually like back in its heyday.

“The reaction has been amazing so far, people have been very helpful sending photos through or stories about their families – it’s been great.”

Ms Brooker hasn’t put a limit on the amount or kind of information they will accept in the museum - as long as it relates to Einasleigh and its history, it is welcome.

New gateway to the cape park LAKELAND’S new Gateway to Cape York and sculpture park was officially opened recently, heavily attended by locals, artists and neighbouring Aboriginal Shire Councils.

The $1.2 million project is located at Lakeland on the Mulligan Highway, aiming to welcome visitors and tourists to the cape peninsula.

An important part of the project was to highlight what makes the cape so historically, culturally and ecologically unique and educate visitors.

Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott was pleased to be able to open the new centre accompanied by more than 60 stakeholders, councillors, community members, artists and more “Lakeland marks the beginning of many Cape York adventures and is a significant

Dad’s set to race again

Dad’s Army will be back to compete in the Great Wheelbarrow Race this year, taking their training at Essential Fitness very seriously.

BY ELLIE FINK KNOWN for their incredible efforts in past Great Wheelbarrow Races and their cheeky performances at its annual talent quests, Dad’s Army is back and ready to rumble this year as they make a return to the 140km race.

Dad’s Army began in 2012, when an RSL sub-branch member suggested it would help Defence Force Veterans of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force keep an active healthy lifestyle.

Local gym Essential Fitness took on the team for basic training and exercises and after hosting a few social events, Dad’s Army decided in 2013 it was time to take on the big race.

In the first stretch of their very first race, the original team soon realised “yes, you actually have to run” – something they did not initially train for.

Regardless of that the team kept pushing, making it to the finish line and taking into account for the next year that “yes, you actually have to run”.

2022 team captain Gary Morgan said this year they are back at it again and training hard at their sponsoring gym and hope to raise more funds for the Mareeba RSL Subbranch and the Mareeba Hospital.

“We are back at it again this year, we have a couple of new faces and we have been raising money for the hospital and the subbranch here,” he said.

“A big majority of funds go towards the hospital and in the past, we have bought them equipment and helped with a few more little causes.”

Every team since the start has seen veterans that have suffered with various medical issues including Parkinson’s, Lung Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Heart Bypass and Stent procedures, Knee replacements and PTSD, but

they continue to race every year with determination to give back to the local hospital and RSL that have kept them together as a team.

Dad’s Army believes that “mateship, regular exercise and a good diet can overcome such disabilities, especially with a good dose of determination”.

Although Mr Morgan says the team will be “a little less involved this year and will be doing their own thing”, they hope that once again they will win their favourite part of the event – the talent show.

“We have won the skits three out of the seven times we have done it,” he said.

“They can be a bit naughty and the sillier they are the better!

“We can’t tell you too much about this year, but we certainly will be up there.”

The water main in Barang Street, Kuranda has been replaced and major works have been completed at Chillagoe with the installation of the new reservoir, bore and pipeline.

Works are also planned at the Mareeba and Kuranda Water and Wastewater Plants. Further, the project to upgrade the Mason St sewer main was recently completed which will ensure capacity for generations to come.

These projects have been funded with a combination of Council funds, Federal and State Government funding.

Community Safety Council continues to work closely with the Queensland Police and other agencies to improve community safety, and there have been some promising outcomes from this work.

In particular, the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs has opened a new office in Mareeba to respond to child safety and youth justice matters and the Mareeba Community Centre has secured Federal Government funding to recruit two youth

Local phone book keeps giving THE Mareeba Blue Care Phone Book has officially been delivered to every house in the Mareeba Shire, not only helping locals find their right contact but also helping Blue Care continue to service the region’s elderly and disabled.

The phone book is one of the biggest fundraisers for the organisation, with publishers Leigh and Rhonda Robinson recently presenting a $3000 cheque to Blue Care.

Each of the 8,400 books distributed has a return envelope with a fundraising letter as well as details to make a direct donation online.

Mr Robinson expressed the importance of having not only a local phone book but also donating to BlueCare.

“When we first started publishing the book, we looked around to see which charity would be a worthy charity to be represented in both the Mareeba and Atherton towns,” he said.

“The obvious answer was BlueCare because they operate everywhere to get to anyone who needs it.

“So that’s why BlueCare has the naming rights of the telephone guide and people understand that they are supporting and donating to the organisation with this book.”

Water Strategy Providing access to a safe and reliable water supply is fundamental to supporting the growth of our communities, and to ensure that Council can deliver this an increase in the annual water access charge was implemented in the 2021/22 budget.

Much of the Shire’s urban drinking water supply infrastructure was installed in the 1950s and 1960s and is approaching the end of its useful life, which is a challenge facing most rural and regional Local Government Authorities.

Since the implementation of the increased water access charge, Council has replaced approximately 15 kilometres of asbestos cement pipes in Mareeba, Kuranda and Mt Molloy. This will be an ongoing project and each year considerable lengths of the underground network will have to be replaced. This major project will impact on water pipes which service an estimated 11,000 residents.

The Queensland Police have announced that an extra two police officers will be deployed to Kuranda and four deployed to Mareeba over the next 3 years. Assistant Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon has also initiated a SMART Panel model in Mareeba and Innisfail which will provide wrap-around support to young offenders on release to reduce recidivism.

The new intensive case-management initiative also increases the monitoring and supervision of serious offenders on orders.

As a Council, we will continue to work with all agencies, services and members of the community towards the common aim of improved community safety, across the Shire.

WITH large parts of south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales affected by significant flooding over the past two months, used-car buyers are being urged to be wary of flood-damaged cars.

RACQ principal technical researcher Andrew Kirk said consumers needed to be vigilant and ensure a vehicle inspection and Personal Property Security Register (PPSR) check were done on any second-hand vehicle before buying.

“There is no law that states a vehicle that has been a repairable write-off, repaired and re-registered, must be disclosed as such when advertised for sale,” Mr Kirk said.

“Also, there are back-yard operators out there that will dry out a flooded car then sell it without notifying insurance companies or TMR (Department of Transport and Main Roads) that the vehicle had been flood-affected.

“This means a PPSR search won’t show it’s been flooded.”

He said RACQ recommended against buying a flood-damaged vehicle due to myriad ongoing issues that could emerge.

These include damage to internal components including the engine, transmission and electrical components, contaminated fuel and oils, and health risks associated with mould and other contaminants affecting carpets, roof linings, seats, and interior fabrics.

The Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTAQ) said the floods were a concern for consumers who urgently needed to replace their damaged vehicles and may buy another

flood-damaged vehicle.

The MTAQ is the peak body representing employers in the retail, repair and service sectors of Queensland’s automotive industry and its CEO Rod Camm said it was important for consumers to conduct proper checks before buying a used vehicle.

“Using a licensed used-car dealer, who is a member of MTA Queensland, will alleviate a lot of stress for a consumer, as they have the reassurance of knowing the dealer will reliably take care of their best interests,” Mr Camm said.

He said another major consideration was the fact the second-hand car market was already booming before the floods and consumers may now find it even harder to find a replacement vehicle at a fair price.

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) spokesperson Doug Wyllie said it was too early to quantify the impact of the floods on the automotive industry.

The FCAI is the peak body for Australia’s automotive industry representing 68 brands which are sold and serviced by almost 4000 dealers nationally.

“We know that multiple dealerships have been inundated and there could very well be some issues with people trying to sell flooddamaged second-hand cars,” he said.

“We've seen unscrupulous people around natural disasters in the past who try to make a buck out of damaged products, but that's the unfortunate risk you face when purchasing a second-hand car and none of our members or dealers will be doing that."

Supporting rural women’s leadership across the region WOMEN across the Gulf Savannah region who want to develop leadership skills and lead with confidence can attend one of three free courses being held this week.

Gulf Savannah NRM will be providing the road tour of regional events to help women of remote and rural Queensland discover and develop their own leadership qualities.

The one-day free courses are available for women in Normanton, Georgetown and Mareeba to help them understand their own unique leadership qualities, learn how to become effective communicators and influencers, and overcome self-limiting beliefs.

The events will feature Tammy Kruckow, who specialises in empowering evolving leaders in agriculture to break through selfimposed limitations, enabling them to lead with confidence.

With over 20 years’ experience in the pastoral industry, Tammy now shares her leadership and communication knowledge and skills with others by facilitating workshops across Northern Australia.

“We know that women are the backbones of rural communities, but despite this, many women don’t take on formal leadership roles,” Gulf Savannah NRM CEO Zoe Williams said.

“We hope that through these workshops women will be encouraged to take the step into public or business leadership positions and have the confidence and skills to succeed in these roles.”

She said women were often the glue which hold communities together, particularly in remote communities where they fill crucial support roles in emergency services, local government, schools, community groups and families.

This project aimed to mobilise and up-skill a new generation of women leaders, building their professional and personal confidence, and enabling them to contribute back to their community.

The free one courses are on 27 April at Georgetown from 9am at the Etheridge Shire Hall supper room, and on 29 April at 9am at Royals Church, Mareeba. Normanton held its session on Tuesday.

Helping hand for glider KNOWN for its distinctive shrieks, rattles and gurgles, the endangered Yellowbellied glider (Wet Tropics) is getting a helping hand with some extra habitat upkeep, thanks to funding provided by the Queensland Government.

The animal’s home is a narrow strip of tall eucalypt forest is threatened by alteration and fragmentation, and with only three known remaining local Tableland populations of the Wet Tropics subspecies of gliders left, moves are afoot to help them survive.

Terrain NRM’s Dr Andrew Dennis said the Gilbey Forest, on State forest and adjacent private land near Herberton, is the habitat for one of the populations but weed infestations are putting the habitat at risk.

Lantana camara is of particular concern in the area as it can drastically change ecosystem condition and function.

“Yellow-bellied gliders live in ‘dens’ in large rose gums in tall eucalypt forest and their survival depends on what remains of that habitat being in top notch condition,” Dr Dennis said.

“The right mix of species must be able to grow and recruit new den and feed trees, but lantana forms dense thickets that can stop young trees from growing and prevents critical forest regeneration.”

Now, a one-off weed control program funded by $84,000 from the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Invest-

ment Program and delivered by Terrain NRM, will involve the removal of lantana from 20 hectares of land.

Teams of people will manually cut plants, paint stems, and use targeted spraying to kill re-sprouting plants.

The program builds on existing, longstanding work by the Yellow-Bellied Glider Project volunteers of the Tree Kangaroo and Mammal Group. The group has been looking after parts of the Gilbey Forest for decades and monitoring resident gliders.

They have partnered with landholders, traditional owners, scientists, schools and other community groups to care for and manage the area.

Yellow-bellied gliders rely on two main habitat trees. They live in the hollow limbs of soaring rose gums where small family groups live in “dens”, and they tap

the trunk of the red mahogany for its clear, sugary sap.

Dr John Winter, part of the team caring for the glider, has been involved with the fluffy gliders since the 1970s.

“Back then nobody much bothered with the wet sclerophyll forests – they were actually completely overlooked for years and years. These days they are far more prominent in people’s minds as an important ecotonal habitat,” he said.

According to Dr Winter, it takes 100150 years for the right kind of hollow to form in rose gums so historical timber harvesting and land clearing has put the remaining wet forest habitat under pressure.

“The main risk for the rose gums is fire. The bark sheds in long strips and accumulates at the base of the tree. We get out and rake the tree bases on a regular basis, but we can only look after small areas,” he said.

“In time, before these large rose gums can be naturally replaced, it’s likely that the gliders will need to use artificial nest boxes.”

The group works closely with Queensland Parks and Wildlife and Jirrbal people to maintain access tracks and monitor dens and feed trees. They have also worked with landholders to replace kilometres of barbed wire with plain wire to reduce barbed wire injury as the mammals glide between trees.

Dairy Youth Camp a success

ANOTHER chapter has been written in the annual All Breeds Educational Dairy Youth Camp, producing this year's set of competition winners at the Malanda Show Grounds recently.

A total of 433 students have gone through the camp over the last 34 years, some of whom have gone on to become respected judges of dairy cattle across Australia, while others have returned to the camps as tutors or to assist with running of the three-day program.

Some are successfully running their own dairy operations, and some have set up their own businesses as cattle fitters travelling the national and international show circuits.

The 2022 Overall Student of the Camp award went to Patrick English of

Malanda, ahead of Runner-up Overall Student, Terese Daley of Millaa Millaa.

The Junior Encouragement Award went to Arlo Jones, while the Intermediate Encouragement was given to Sienna Rielly and Aila Bevan received the Senior Encouragement award.

Team of the Camp award for the highest overall performers in the Youth Leadership Challenge went to Group 4 which contained Kimberly Daley, Aila Bevan, April Burtenshaw, Abigail Daley, Euleila Kanowski, Lucas Rielly and Kayla Tebay Dent.

Strongly supported by local businesses and the Tableland community, the youth camp delivered a ton of information about preparing, presenting, leading and judging cattle and a whole lot more, including public speaking, an ambulance presentation on first aid and the Carey

Group accounting and financial services presentation on budgeting.

After two days of being trained in clipping, parading and judging, the event culminated in the Calf Day Parader Competition on Saturday where the heifers were judged in their age categories.

Terese Daley’s exceptional heifer, ‘Gilbert Milos Haiti’ won the Under 18 month category and was named Senior Champion and Supreme Champion Heifer ahead of Patrick English’s Reserve Champion Heifer and under 14 month category winner, ‘Eachamvale Kaye 20.’

The Honourable Mention went to Lachlan Johnston’s Eachamvale Pet 25.

Mary English was awarded Junior Champion Heifer and Heifer Under-10 Months with “Eachamvale Stately 39” ahead of Lucas Rielly's “Millaa View Web Rosemary 2”, while Reece Rielly's “Eachamvale Pet 26” won the Heifer Under-4 Months and the Honourable Mention section. Team of the Camp, Group D's heifer “Long Lanes Ferdinand Rosemary” took out the Heifer Under-8 months category.

In other sections of the competition, Caitlin Channells won the Junior Clipping Award, Tara Bevan won the Intermediate and Patrick English won the Senior award. Caitlin Channells also won the Junior Judging Award, while Frances English won the Intermediate and Terese Daley took out the Senior category.

In the Parading arena, the Junior Parader Award went to April Burtenshaw,

with Mary English winning the Intermediate and Terese Daley was victorious in the Senior Parader's category.

LETTERS to theEDITOR Do more for community SO here we go again. Our overpaid, out of touch with the community Tablelands Regional Council Mayor and councillors have decided to get rid of more of our community assets (forget about community consultations their minds are already made up).

Instead of selling off our assets, how about giving up half your income for maintenance of these buildings if they are so underused or to be torn down.

These are community owned buildings and last I checked, you guys work for us, you're not a law unto yourselves to just do whatever you want.

Councillors of old did more for their community and were in touch with the community's pulse whilst only receiving 1/10 of your current income.

Why should the people of your electorate have to do presentations to inform you of past council rulings/decisions? Silly me, here I thought as part of your overpaid jobs you should know everything about our shire you're supposed to be looking after.

Time to bring back the community's/people’s council.

A tribute to all mothers EVERY woman that has children is not only the mother of her children, but she has a far greater role as a mother of the future of our nation. Both sides of government are largely driven by their masters, the proponents of consumerism with their incessant rhetoric of more women in the workforce.

This philosophy, that a woman’s primary purpose in life should change from the general previous role of carer to children home and partner to that of a tax-paying slave to consumerism, is to many an unwanted and destructive governmental intrusion into the long-term social fabric of our society.

This philosophy has driven women, who want to participate in the traditional roll of motherhood and nurturing, into a life of slavery and poverty. Politicians and others have been complicit in snatching a baby from a mother’s breast because she has had to go to work instead of nurturing her child in a proper, timely, and caring manner.

This is an example of the modern Australia where the warmth, comfort, security and nourishment of the mother’s constant physical connection with the child is lost.

This is the most fundamental of all emo-

tions, the feeling of security and protection that is so necessary in the early learning of a developing child.

Many of the social problems of our youth today can be directly traced back to the early abandonment of mothers as they need to place their newborn babies into the sterile world of childcare so that mothers, not by choice, but due to economic necessity are thrust into the workforce just to survive.

This is an absolutely disgraceful situation that our country finds itself in. Even Third World countries value the importance of the deep physiological and emotional connection of the mother and the child. All women of child-bearing age should be encouraged to have more children by governments paying mothers a proper wage so they can properly look after their children with a decent living standard and not be sent into poverty.

It also expatiates the difference between the well-off, who can afford their mothers to stay at home and look after their children and the poor and middle class who need to seek employment just to survive and pay the bills.

It is time for women with children to stand up for their rights and demand a better deal from governments who are quite happy to pay migrants, asylum seekers and others large amounts of money while sending our own Australian mothers into poverty.

As to remuneration for the work done by mothers I believe as a starting point mothers should be paid at the same rate as a full-time childcare worker including superannuation and holiday pay even though there is a large difference between the paid 36-hour week for a child care worker with all entitlements and the unpaid 168 hours 24/7 worked by a mother with no entitlements.

There are other benefits to paying mothers to stay at home and raise their children one being a greater cohesiveness within the family unit.

There would be less family breakups because of the stress caused by the current untenable situation. There would be more jobs for middle aged women and school leavers two areas of high unemployment.

There would be less neurological problems with our youth as they progress through their teenage years.

There would be less stress on building more childcare places and training more childcare workers.

Mothers could progress their education while they are stay at home Mums and that would benefit them when they re-entered the workforce at a later stage when their child raising obligations have been completed.

Everywhere you look you can find benefits for this policy. All people could feel that they are contributing to the welfare and future of our nation by contributing $2 per week from everybody including government allowances for new start, pensioners – literarily everybody that receives an income whether governmental or otherwise would need to pay this levy. After all, today’s children are tomorrow’s doctors, nurses, dentists, teachers, tradespeople and carers whose industry alone will permit the country to look after you in your old age.

Housing crisis concerns I SHARE Matt Lachlan’s concern about the rental crisis on the Tablelands (The Express, 13/4).

As house prices soar, so too do rents, and people on low incomes find it harder and harder to find secure accommodation.

Homelessness and over-crowding contribute to physical and mental health problems and crime.

Social housing is a Federal/State response to this issue. And part of this, the Sales to Tenants Program, aims to assist low-income renters into the housing market.

Yet, over the last four years, just 101 of the 1182 social houses sold in Queensland were actually sold to tenants. That’s less than 10 per cent. The rest were sold on the open market.

The situation in the electorate of Kennedy is even worse. Only four of the 73 social housing dwellings were sold to tenants.

That’s just 5 per cent.

In the current election campaign, both major parties are promising to enable people with small deposits (as low as 2 per cent) to buy a house.

But this will only drive up the price of houses, as more people chase the limited supply. And with low wages and interest rates set to rise mid-year, the scheme could be setting up some buyers for disaster.

The ALP has promised more social housing, but if these can be sold off to private buyers, tenants may be back in the same mess.

It’s time to pressure all politicians to ensure that there is more social housing and that this is protected from the private market.

A reminder also that quad bikes are not to be used on or around the grounds unless you have a permit to do so.

Anyone who does hold a permit to use a quad bike or ATV needs to hold a current driver licence, wear a seatbelt where fitted and wear a helmet. This also includes passengers.

Children of any age who are unable to sit with their feet flat on the floor and hands on the handholds are also prohibited from riding a quad bike. Riding an unregistered quad bike is an offence if driven on a road or road related area, and the operator of the bike could

be fined heavily or face court.

A good night out should be just that - don’t let your actions cause you or others to be put in an unsafe environment.

WELCOME, and I hope everyone enjoys the Easter break, camping, fishing, socialising or just taking it easy. Not to forget the Easter egg hunt. May you find lots and enjoy.

Also in April we commemorate Anzac Day. A day for reflection, for giving thanks and honouring those who have made our world a better place for us.

This brings to mind a find recently re-discovered while cleaning out one of our cupboards at the society’s rooms.

A fabulous journal of many pages listing dates, ranks, serial numbers, names, home addresses and comments of many of the service personnel who were in Mareeba during the year 1942.

As there are many pages, this will take time for the information to be placed on a database and then the pages scanned as well. This will be worth waiting for once the work has been done as it will be placed on-line.

A most interesting and important journal. So pleased it was “found”.

As usual, the Historical Society of Mareeba is always on the lookout for photos, letters, obits, postcards, and old newspapers, anything that will assist in keeping our fabulous history of the shire safe and available for now and for the future.

Remember the rooms are open for researchers to come and check out our files. We have information and photos on both World Wars, mining, rodeo, genealogy, tobacco, Tinaroo Dam, water, weirs, hospital, medical and so on. Some files are larger than others, so we are still compiling and filing.

Anyone who wishes to come and assist will be made most welcome.

One of our next projects will be to update and re-vamp our webpage. It has been a while since we launched it and unfortunately our inaugural webmaster is now very ill and will not be returning. We have applied for a grant to help us with the webpage.

Due to Covid, 60 per cent of our working members have been unable to return to assist. How about you coming in to help? Contact the Secretary on: sec@mbahistsoc.org.au and we can chat about days and times.

Wadleys secure state title

THE Wadleys have once again dominated the podium after a recent State Championship appearance in Brisbane by both Travis and Breanne This championship was Breanne’s first competing in the laser class after graduating from O’pen Skiff recently.

There were over 90 lasers sailing at Moreton Bay in Brisbane for the championship, however this did not deter Breanne from pushing ahead of the pack.

Breanne won the Girl’s Queensland State Championship title in the Laser 4.7, the U18 title and was 3rd overall.

Due to her efforts, she was awarded three Laser cubes at the presentations, a very significant achievement as they are quite prestigious and hard to come by.

Breanne went into the final day in top place overall, but an unfortunate black flag start in the last race of the regatta de-

nied her the opportunity to compete in the last race to clinch the overall win.

Nonetheless it was a strong result for her first State Championship in the Laser class.

Brother Travis finished 3rd overall at the State Championships for a second year in a row in the hotly contested Laser Radial fleet.

He was the second Queenslander, so he nearly had his name on the perpetual trophy however he was awarded a Laser cube at the presentations.

A convincing race win on day two put Travis in a strong position in the five-race regatta, moderate breezes to 10 knots and a short chop made it feel just like sailing at Lake Tinaroo.

Travis was excited to finish on the podium as many experienced sailors had travelled from NSW to compete at the regatta.

Travis and Breanne Wadley have once again stepped onto the podium after their recent performances at the Queensland State Championships.

Coach awarded for dedication OWNER and head coach of Momentum Gymnastics in Atherton, Dianne Zutt, has been recognised for her 30 plus years in the industry, receiving the Trevor Dowell Regional Service to Sport Award from Gymnastics Queensland.

This highly coveted award is sought after by every regional gymnastics club as it is the only award presented

by Gymnastics Queensland to regional clubs compared to their metropolitan counterparts.

Ms Zutt has spent over 30 years of her life dedicated to gymnastics, coaching at the South Cairns, Barron

Valley, Mareeba and now Momentum Gymnastics clubs.

She has been described as not only a coach to her gymnasts but also a mentor who invests time away from the gym caring about the girls in school and life, often forming lifelong bonds with her gymnasts.

Ms Zutt now hopes to attend the National Championships this year while the club will be heading to the Barron Valley Gymnastics Club for their first junior competition of the year.

They will then head off to the NQ Games, State Clubs and Junior State Championships later in the year.

Momentum Gymnastics coach Dianne Zutt has been recognised for her years of dedication to gymnastics.

Talent program launched YOUNG Queensland athletes will have the chance of a lifetime and even be given the opportunity to perform on the world stage at the 2032 Olympics with the launch of a talent identification program.

Youfor2032 is the country’s largest ever athlete talent identification program and seeks to maximise Queensland’s podium ready athletes for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The search is underway with young Far North Queenslanders sampling the Queensland Academy of Sport’s testing program.

SPORT The Roosters first grade side proudly show their Anzac jersey before Saturday night’s kick off.

Roosters victorious in Anzac match THE Atherton Roosters first grade have secured their third win of the regular season, beating Ivanhoes 1814 in a hard fought contest at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

There was a moving remembrance Anzac ceremony prior to the kick off. Wearing their specially designed Anzac jersey, the tricolours weren’t at their convincing best but did enough in the second half to

secure the round four FNQ Rugby League premiership competition points.

The Roosters got on top early, setting up a 6-0 lead when winger Jordan Skeen crossed after 6 minutes of play.

Errors proved costly for the Roosters giving Ivanhoes plenty of ball to go on the attack and they soon had the Roosters on the back foot.

Ivanhoes got to the line for two tries

in the run up to half time and went to the break leading 14-6.

Jordan Skeen’s second match try soon after the restart rolled the Roosters back into the contest and they now trailed 14-10. Young Roosters winger Tom Cuda followed minutes later to lock the score up at 14 all with 25 minutes remaining.

The game now settled into a grind with both teams looking for the advantage. It was the Roosters who

registered the next points when Ivanhoes spilt a well placed Jermaine Pedro bomb close to their own line.

Ever present fullback Ty Grogan was quick to clean up the loose ball and race over for what was the Roosters winning four points. The win takes the Roosters record to 3-4 for the season and gives them plenty of confidence heading into their next showdown at Mareeba on May 7.

In reserve grade, a three try effort

from hooker Connor Griffin highlighted in the Roosters 30-10 win over Ivanhoes after the homeside led 12-0 at half time.

The Roosters under 18 side remain undefeated in 2022 after their impressive 28-4 win over Ivanhoes on Saturday.

There will be no club competition this weekend as the annual Foley Shield representative carnival is being played in Townsville.

Injured Gladiators fall to Kangaroos THE Mareeba Gladiators faced off against the Kangaroos in a special Sunday game at Davies Park, going down 40-18 in an injury riddled match.

Out of the gate, the Gladiators fought hard and looked to score early, however the Kangaroos were the first to cross the line and set the tone for the rest of the game.

It was a hard battle for the next 20 minutes with the Gladiators experiencing injury after injury as the bench got thinner and thinner.

The Gladiators went into the half 20-0 and came out the other side with some of the team’s renowned fighting spirit, putting on three tries from Caleb Dally, Jaylan Williams and Keripo Gutchen-Gela.

It was too little too late however as the

Kangaroos kept piling on the tries, stretching the score out to 40-18 at fulltime.

Gladiators coach Chris Sheppard was disappointed with the result but not how his players performed, stating he was very proud of their efforts.

“I was very proud of the way the team played with a lot of people out of position and only one substitute,” he said.

“We finished with no available players on the bench and a front rower playing on the wing.

“A special mention to Hubie Elu for another standout game.”

The Gladiators will now face off against town rivals the Atherton Roosters back at home after the May Day long weekend on May 7.
