Last mail to the North Pole AUSTRALIA post is reminding kids not to leave their letters to Santa to the last minute. Like everyone else, the jolly man in red will be finalising his Christmas plans early this year so Australia Post is calling on kids to let him know they’ve been nice before he checks his list for that all important second time. Australia Post is once again helping to connect children directly with their number one hero via the much-loved tradition, Santa Mail and the precious letters will want to be sent early this year, so he has plenty of time to reply before Christmas Eve. Last year, 120,000 children wrote to the North Pole to let Santa know what presents they hoped to see under the tree. Christina Malfitana said her three year-old son Braxton was really looking forward to Christmas and that he had asked for some Bluey Merchandise for Christmas. “He loves Bluey the dog, he would be happy with anything from Santa that is Bluey related,” she said. Australia Post’s General Manager Post Office Network David McNamara said the postal service is doing everything it can this year to help Australians have the best possible Christmas and is looking forward to getting children and families into the festive spirit. “Santa Mail is one of those Australian traditions that families look forward to every year and it helps add a little touch of excitement at this magical time,” he said.

LETTER TO SANTA: Three year old Braxton Malfitana of Mareeba posting his letter to Santa.

“It’s also the perfect activity to encourage children to think about all the things that make them happy and practice their literacy skills by putting pencil to paper expressing what they are hoping for. “We want to give Santa time to respond to every letter, so we’re encouraging children and families to aim to get their letters in nice and early. You can also visit the Santa Mail

website for helpful templates, and to keep an eye on your letter’s progress with our Santa Mail Tracker.” To take part, letters should be addressed to Santa, North Pole 9999 with a 65c Christmas stamp on the front of the envelope and your name and return address on the back, so Santa knows where to send his reply. Santa Mail letters can be placed in any red street post-

ing box, or a dedicated Santa Mail box in participating Post Offices, and families are encouraged to post letters before Thursday, November 26, so Santa can reply before loading up his sleigh. For further information on Santa Mail, including how to take part, letter writing tips, and the Santa Mail Tracker please visit auspost.com.au/ santamail

Bridge closure causes concern the bridge stays at one lane and is reduced to 25 tonne it will have major implications on the local community.” The reduction in the load limit would have catastrophic ramifications for transport infrastructure in farming, business and general freight which will be forced to use alternate routes to supply goods and services. KAP Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said the reduction in weight limits ruled out all semi-trailers from transporting groceries, fuel and all general freight from Cairns to Mareeba.

nounced that the Barron River Bridge would be reduced to one lane while TMR carried out inspections. TMR admitted that they found issues with the Barron River Bridge and that further investigations were required. When asked by The Express specifically what those issues were, a TMR spokesperson responded with, “The Bridge is safe, but we have identified some issues, which require further investigation,” they said. “The bridge has been reduced to one lane, while we carry out inspections.

“Council is concerned that if the bridge stays at one lane and is reduced to 25 tonne it will have major implications on the local community.”

CONCERN: The Barron River Bridge at Kuranda has been reduced to one lane with concerns the load limit will also be changed.

THE Mareeba Shire Council is seeking clarification from the Department of Transport and Main Roads regarding the Barron River Bridge at Kuranda which connects Cairns to Mareeba, the Tablelands and the

outback. Confusion over why the Barron River Bridge has been reduced to one lane and a lack of communication over how long the road will stay like that is causing concern for motor-

ists and businesses across the region. The topic was brought up at last week’s Council meeting with cause for concern as the Bridge was reduced to one lane with the possibility of its load

limit being reduced from 50.5 tonne to just 25 tonne. A council spokesperson said, “We are writing to the state minister regarding the new load limits,” “Council is concerned that if

This means they will be forced to divert to the Rex Range, periodically congested with cane haulage trucks and adding an extra hour and a half travel time, or to the Gillies Highway, adding an extra two hours travel time, or the Palmerston Highway adding an extra three hours travel time. Les Blennerhassett, from Blenners Transport said that if the Bridge limit dropped below 45 tonne the company would not be able to use any of their single semi-trailers to transport goods to and from Mareeba On November 4, Transport and Main Road (TMR) an-

“The lane closure is a precautionary measure while our team of experts carries out their investigations. “Traffic controllers and temporary traffic lights are in place to assist motorists. Sign up – new SMS service for storm season WITH the storm season just around the corner, Ergon Energy have announced that locals can now sign up for free power outage and restoration SMS notifications. The service also provides property owners with an SMS reminder five days before any planned power interruptions for network maintenance occurring at their address. Executive General Manager Customer, Michael Dart said the SMS service is ideal for helping people plan their lives around unexpected and planned power disruptions at their house. “At Ergon we know any power interruption can be inconvenient, but these SMS notifications will allow you to better plan when outages occur,” Mr Dart said. “For example, when our crews have to carry out network maintenance and need to interrupt power we’ll always send a notification via post at least four days beforehand, but people who have signed up for the SMS service will also get a text. “When unexpected outages occur during events such as storms, we will send an SMS to affected customers and another text once power is restored. “This allows customers to make other arrangements – they can leave their property when the outage occurs and return once they receive a text that power has been reconnected.” To receive outage notifications register at ergon.com.au/ selfservice or phone 13 74 66. To register you’ll need to have your electricity bill to an6swer a couple of questions.

Grab a piece of history

TABLELANDS residents are being given the opportunity to own a piece of history with parts of the old nurses’ quarters at the Atherton Hospital having been salvaged and put up for auction. Atherton Hospital Acting Director of Nursing, Leonie Jennings, said the Atherton Hospital Redevelopment team had made it a priority to capture the past by salvaging recyclable items from the Primary Health Centre before it was demolished. “An expert crew went through the building and removed French doors, arched and casement windows, balustrades and other items which have been donated to the Atherton Friends of the Hospital Foundation for a community auction,” Ms Jennings said. “I know how important this building was to the community but unfortunately it was financially impossible to preserve as part of the redevelopment as it was in very poor condition. “This way the community will have the chance to take a piece of the old building home.” Proceeds from the auction will go to help the fundraising group provide more equipment for health services in Atherton. Atherton Friends of the Hospital Foundation president Dianne Williams expressed

her gratitude to the health service for the donated items and said it was a wonderful way for the old Atherton Hospital buildings to be remembered and cherished. “We’re all very excited about the new facilities being provided but it’s beautiful to be able to remember the spe-

cial times that happened in the old buildings,” Mrs Williams said. Among items to be auctioned are a board room table, dozens of doors and windows, other furniture and a vintage Beale piano. Mrs Williams said the Beale piano was made some

time between 1912-16. “It is thought that Jim McConnell sold the piano for 175 pounds to the Atherton Hospital after his first wife Luisa died of the Spanish Flu. He had the piano shipped up from New South Wales and brought up to Atherton by horse and buggy,” she said.

The Auction will be held this Saturday, November 28 at the cattle sheds at the Atherton Showgrounds. Doors open and viewing will be from 8am, the auction will start at 10am. A coffee van and food stalls will be present and after the auction, a cent sale will be held at the Merriland Hall.

Local waterways croc infested

A REPORT tabled at last week’s Mareeba Shire Council meeting confirmed that there is current evidence of saltwater crocodiles living in both Two Mile Creek and Lake Mitchell, just outside of Mareeba. The survey was conducted by Top End Crocodile Service (TECS) three years ago into the suspected presence of saltwater crocodiles in these areas. At the time they had identified 23 crocodiles between the lengths of 50cm to 1.5m within these areas. Brodie Moloney Owner and Operator of TECS said that there is not much distance between Two-Mile Creek and the Barron River for a crocodile to travel in the wet season. “We found evidence of salt-

water crocodiles in Two-Mile Creek and Lake Mitchell, the Barron River lacked any evidence of saltwater crocodiles inhabiting it,” he said. “When it floods you’ve only got about 500m between some of those cane fields near TwoMile Creek and the Barron River. “There is still a decent possibility of saltwater crocodiles crossing into the Barron River during the wet season.” MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said Council would continue to advocate for the removal of the saltwater reptiles found in the Two-Mile Creek and Lake

Mitchell areas. “It is concerning that there are saltwater crocodiles in the Two-Mile Creek and Lake Mitchell areas and Council will continue to lobby the relevant government departments to take appropriate action to remove these animals,” she said. “They are not naturally found here and should be removed. “The State Government needs to move quickly before the reptiles mature and start reproducing.” TECS conducted a second survey into the Barron River at both the bridge on Henry Hannam Drive at Mareeba and the

A small population of freshwater crocodiles were found in the Barron River and the Tinaroo Creek weir, the report suggests that while it is a breeding population the survival rates of both eggs and hatchlings would be incredibly low. New way of marketing Tablelands kicks off

THE new destination marketing agency for the Atherton Tablelands have wasted no time in getting to know the region, with C7even holding a meet and greet in Yungaburra on Thursday, November 19. The meet and greet was held as a way for tourism operators and businesses to see what C7even had planned marketing wise for the region. In August of this year both the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) and the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) decided to discontinue using Tourism Atherton Tablelands (TAT) for tourism and destination marketing and instead chose to put the role out to tender. Both councils had been funding TAT to the tune of $25,000 per council, per year. Last month C7even were awarded the contract to oversee and rollout destination marketing for the Atherton shire for the next three years. On Thursday local business identities and tourism operators got to hear from C7even and discuss what their plans were immediately and for the next 3 years. In attendance was TRC division four Councillor David Clifton who said it was important to introduce the new tourism contractor to some of the Tablelands tourism fraternity. “There had been some reservations from people about

change, but we are all quite excited that we now have an opportunity to have a new look at tourism on the Tablelands,” he said. “We had been with Tourism Atherton Tablelands (TAT) for over 10 years and everything needs a refresh every now and again.” Some Tablelands residents have concerns that a Tamworth company has been awarded the

tender to market the Tablelands to interstate and international visitors. It’s something Susie Laurence from C7even said was unfounded. “We are expanding into Northern Queensland and we have an offices in Cairns and Brisbane,” she said. “Part of our role will be looking at further opportunities in North Queensland and this is a great first step for us.

“Today has been all about meeting with local tourism operators, to put a face to a name and to talk to them about what we do.” Susie said some of the goal of C7even will be to increasing overnight visitation and tourism spends. “We are going to be working really hard to get people to spend more money here and engage in the area.” she said.

TAT here to stay ONE company that is not happy about the awarding of the destination marketing contract to C7even is Tourism Atherton Tablelands (TAT) who held the contract for the past 20 years. TAT released a statement criticising that they had not been ‘invited’ to the C7even meet and greet, even though the invites for the event was published on social media and was open to anybody. In a statement they wrote. “Tourism Atherton Tablelands would like to acknowledge the concerned emails, confusion and feedback we continue to receive from the industry in regard to Tablelands Regional Council’s appointment of the Tamworth-based marketing agency C7EVEN to carry out “destination” marketing for the boundaries of its local government area.” “We have been advised through our networks that there is a meet and greet event that will be held on Thursday, November 19 in Yungaburra to meet the industry. It is with great disappointment that Tourism Atherton Tablelands, which is an industry led tourism organisation with 90 plus members based within Tablelands Regional Council’s borders, was not invited to positively contribute as part of this meeting. “You can be assured that we will continue our role as the representative voice of the local tourism industry, working with local stakeholders as well as at a strategic level with the RTO Tourism Tropical North

Queensland and Tourism Events Queensland. “Tourism Atherton Tablelands’ priority now is to better understand the work that will be carried out by C7EVEN on behalf of Tablelands Regional Council, without damaging the established brand of the Atherton Tablelands and causing visitor confusion. “Tourism Atherton Tablelands has been delivering initiatives for the last 34 years and we believe our marketing activities have not only supported our members, but have provided our visitors with factual, insightful information on our truly unique and diverse destination. “Our social media channels reached over four million people in 2019/20 while the website had half a million-page views and the blog section, more than 70,000 page visits. More recent website statistics show a 30% increase in visitation, averaging 13,000 unique visitors each month. “As well as our destination marketing activities, we also carried out valuable member engagement and networking opportunities for our industry. Coming up, we have a number of key projects that we are continuing to work on including the Discover visitor guide, social media campaigns and new experience led video to inspire the drive market. “Please note, the decision to award ratepayer money that supports tourism promotion to a New South Wales based organisation was done with no tourism

industry consultation, despite a well-established brand and LTO in region. We have noted comments in recent media from Tablelands Regional Council that are not indicative of the achievements and work that our organisation, which is industry led and not for profit, has achieved on behalf of our members with a contribution from the council of $25,000. “While we have remained quiet and accept the decision that Tablelands Regional Council has made, we do take comments such as these, in an attempt to discredit the organisation and the work we have carried out for the last three decades with a highly respected industry led board made up of tourism owners and operators, as very serious and disappointing. “Now is an uncertain time for our industry and we ask that you continue to show your support for Tourism Atherton Tablelands to ensure our industry remains united and strong together over this critical period. “It is also incredibly important that C7EVEN and Tablelands Regional Council are transparent of their activities carrying out destination marketing, just as Tourism Atherton Tablelands has always been. “We look forward to seeing the campaign activity they have planned over the next three years roll out to support our members and the wider tourism and business communities.”

MATESHIP: Aaron Dozier is ready to run for his mate Rob Turner and family.

AFTER his childhood friend Rob Turner collapsed from a rare brain bleed in September, Aaron Dozier took it upon himself to use his knowledge and enthusiasm as a way to raise money to help support Rob and his family. Aaron came up with the idea to run a kilometre for every $50 donation to Rob’s Go Fund Me page, an idea which he named ‘Run for Rob’. After tallying up the kilometres he has to run, Aaron will then spread them out over January and February of next year, each day of the month, with some rest days thrown in The reasoning behinds Aaron’s decision to do this run is simple – he felt he needed a way to help his mate. “When it initially happened two friends and I headed down to Townsville where Rob had been sent,” he said.

“While I was down there I felt very involved we were helping the family do the shopping and all of that kind of stuff. “When I got back up here I honestly felt kind of lost and I wasn’t quite sure how to make an impact, but I still wanted to help.” Since Aaron is an Exercise Physiologist he decided to use his profession to be impactful and use it in a way to help out his friend in need. “Anyone who knows me knows that I predominantly lift weights so the idea was that everyone might enjoy seeing this 93 kilo human do some running,” Aaron said. If the fundraising goal of $150,000 is raised Aaron will need to run a massive 630 kilometres which is quite the feat of endurance over two months of constant running.

“When we were working it out and tinkering with the numbers we thought that was a reasonable number in order for me not to die on the run,” Aaron said. “The friendship instinct to just do anything you can to help, be involved and do what you can to help out some really beautiful people. “The community support has been astounding even before we did the Run for Rob, the Go Fund Me page had ticked well over $100,000 in donations, which is incredible.” If you would like to show your support for Rob Turner and his family and help Aaron Dozier on his mission to run 630 kilometres, you can donate to the GoFundMe page at https://gf.me/u/y2v9z3

Land secured for Kuranda Cemetery expansion

The Kuranda Cemetery will expand onto an adjacent block after it became available to purchase recently.

THE Mareeba Shire Council recently acquired a parcel of land adjacent to the Kuranda Cemetery and will use this land to expand the existing cemetery. The issue of the existing cemetery’s future capacity came into question in July during a MSC council meeting. Since then the idea of acquiring a new plot of land to expand the cemetery was put to public consultation, at the time the new plot of land that has been acquired was not up for sale.

Mayor Angela Toppin said it was fortuitous the land became available for purchase while Council was considering community feedback regarding the future of the Kuranda Cemetery. “Council was seeking feedback from the cemetery regarding possible options for a new Kuranda Cemetery when this site became available,” she said. “We are very fortunate that this opportunity became available in very close proximity to the current site.

“It is a wonderful outcome for the residents in Kuranda and surrounding areas.” Due to the size of the new property sections not required for the cemetery may be subdivided and available for sale to the public. Council is now in the process of submitting a development application for the material change of use and reconfiguration of the property.

Youth parliament success LAKE Eacham’s Connor Le’Gear and member of the Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) Youth Advisory Committee is putting the Tablelands on the political map. TRC Mayor Rod Marti met with Connor earlier this year when Connor was representing the Hill Electorate in the Queensland Youth Parliament. “I was very impressed with Connor and am glad that our Youth Advisory Committee has both benefitted from and contributed to this young man’s passion and development,” Mr Marti said.

“The voice of youth in our region is an important one that must be listened to.” Connor who is currently studying a Diploma of Youth Justice travelled to Brisbane for the Youth Parliament session. “When we arrived, we were separated into committees to each develop a bill on issues impacting youth,” Connor said. “We then came together in Parliament House to vote on the bills, which were then sent to the committee’s in Queensland’s Parliament House. “The State MPs then chose

to present the bills in State Parliament, or use bits of them for their own bills.” A good example of the success of the Youth Parliament is the mandatory 100 hours for learner drivers which came from the program. “Since the Youth Parliament I’ve met with ministers, mayors and councillors to discuss issues impacting youth. “I showcased the TRC Youth Strategic Plan to the Mayor of Cassowary Coast and he’s invited me to be a guest speaker at their youth forum next year.”

CHRISTMAS IN DIMBULAH: Tammy Sivyer, owner of Dimbulah Gifts and Décor Boutique, in Dimbulah is one of the many shops and stalls that will be open at the Christmas on Glynn Street’ event on December 5.

Dimbulah set to light up with Christmas spirit THE Dimbulah community are getting into the Christmas spirit with their first ever ‘Christmas on Glynn Street’ event which is happening on Saturday, December 5. Local retailers will be staying open late, there will be arts and crafts stalls, food vendors, raffles, a cent sale, live entertainment and of course a visit from Santa. Manager of The Dimbulah Community Centre, Grace Armenti said the idea came from

the need to give locals, not for profit organisations and clubs the opportunity to fundraise. “This year due to COVID guidelines a lot of fundraising was put on hold; this is a way of bringing back that great community spirit and to celebrate Christmas while helping out our clubs,” she said. “We also want to give businesses the opportunity to open.” On the night Grace said there will be about 20 market stalls holders, plus food and drink

stalls. “It gives locals the opportunity to support local businesses,” she said. “Santa will be arriving at about 8pm and we want to make it as festive as possible.’ “We would also like everyone to respect our COVID rules.” The one night event kicks off at 5pm and will run through to 10pm. For more information visit the Dimbulah Community Centre Facebook page.

Celebrating 20 years of visitors

20TH ANNIVERSARY: Longtime volunteer Marie Boswarva with MSC Mayor Angela Toppin and MSC Councillor Mary Graham, cutting the birthday cake at the Kuranda Visitor Information Centre.

LAST Thursday volunteers at Kuranda’s Visitor Information centre came together to celebrate 20 years of connecting visitors to the village in the rainforest. The celebrations were attended by the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Mayor Angela Toppin, Councillors, staff and volunteers. Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said the Kuranda Visitor Information Centre has become a central hub for those visiting Kuranda. “The Centre provides essential visitor information services for locals and tourists exploring the Village in the rainforest and Council is very proud of the high level of customer service the staff and volunteers maintain,” Cr Toppin said. The original Kuranda Visitor Information Centre was opened on May 22, 2000 by then State

Minister for Tourism, Merri Rose. Then a new Kuranda Visitor Information Centre was opened in August 2014 next door to the original centre. The centre now has a Wet Tropics interpretive corner, live insect displays, local art and books for sale and a tour desk. Mayor Angela Toppin said the volunteers were the backbone of the information centre. “I thank the enthusiastic team of volunteers who have consistently supported the centre, with many still active for nearly the whole time it has been open,” she said. Volunteer Marie Boswarva became a volunteer the first week the centre opened. “The women that recruited me said I would only need to stay until they could find a replacement, that was 20 years ago and I’m still waiting,” she said. “It’s been so interesting to

see how its all changed and developed, at the beginning we didn’t really know what we were doing. “I have been really lucky to experience some great attractions thanks to this centre.” Marie said had seen some major changes to the Kuranda community over the past 20 years “Skyrail changed a lot of things, tourists used to come by buses but now its all geared around Skyrail and the trains,” she said. “COVID has also really affected the businesses. “I still volunteer 20 years later; as it gets me out of the house and I like to help people and it’s nice to catch up with my friends. “One of the ways to belong to the local community is to volunteer.”

Community benefits from Wind Farm fund THE latest grant recipients from the Mount Emerald Wind Farm Community fund have been announced with sixteen local organisations sharing in the $100,000 pool. Organisations like FlexiChoice Mareeba, Ravenshoe Tennis Club and Ravenshoe Meals on Wheels were among the sixteen successful recipients of the latest round of funding. Paul McDonald, RATCHAustralia’s site manager for the Mount Emerald Wind Farm was pleased with the amount and quality of the submissions for the latest round of funding. “Once again the standard of applications was extremely high and the advisory commit-

tee comprising local volunteers had a difficult job to recommend how the remaining funds for the year should be allocated,” he said. “As always we are very grateful for their hard work and good humour in assessing dozens of applications. “We appreciate that 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for community organisations and encourage any group that missed out to try again in 2021.” The fund is available all year round for projects and initiatives located within a 50km radius of the wind farm are eligible for support from the fund.

COUNCILLORS from The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) recently met the Honourable Scott Buchholz MP, Assistant Minister for Roads and Transport on Ootann Road to show him the work that still needed to be done to the unsealed highway. Minister Buchholz was travelling through North Queensland and visited Ootann Road at the request of the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils. “Ootann Road is our 90km inland highway and the unsealed sections of the road prevent year-round use,” said TRC Councillor Annette Haydon. “If it can be weather-proofed, we can secure it as a reliable freight route to the eastern seaboards for agriculture, beef, mining and tourism industries and their suppliers. “Widening and sealing the full length of the road will improve transport and traffic safety, significantly reduce transport times and maintenance costs will be reduced.” Beef Roads and State Transport Infrastructure and Development Scheme funding, combined with a contribution from both councils sealed about 12km in 2018–19. Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said Ootann is a strategic transport corridor for the region. “Ootann Road is an imperative link, connecting industry in Northern Australia with southern markets,” she said. “As Australia’s third largest fruit producer and a producer of off-season temperate zone produce, there is a need for large volumes of freight to move from the region to southern and overseas markets.” Mayor Toppin said that many sections of Ootann Road are narrow and unsealed, and subject to road closures and

load limits during the wet season, which impacts its reliability. “Any work to progressively widen, seal and flood-proof this road will be reliant on funding from the Australian and Queensland governments and we will continue to advocate funding commitments from both levels of Government.” Minister Buchholz was impressed with the work completed to date and both Councils advocated strongly for further federal funding to complete the improvement work. “It was fantastic to inspect some of the recently completed work on the Ootann Road. Including the most recent of the progressive sealing works, which the Australian Government provided 80 per cent ($4.1 million) of the funding for,” he said. “It is a great example of what can be delivered when governments work together, and this was a partnership between the Federal Government and Mareeba Shire and the Tablelands Regional Council. “This inspection was part of my recent weeklong visit to Western and Far North Queensland, to see the work being undertaken across regional Queensland.” Minister Buchholz said “there is no doubt further work is required on this local road by all levels of government,” he said. “I must say it is incredible to see the graders working and the shovels in the ground, building key routes, upgrading roads and bridges, as a result of the Morrison Governments infrastructure investment program. “I look forward to being back in NQ later this month for the next round of consultations with local and state stakeholders for the ROSI funding priorities.”

$45,000 of equipment for Mareeba Hospital THE Mareeba Hospital has been given a hand up in their hospital services with the recent donation of vital new equipment courtesy of the local Freemasons Lodge. Granite Freemasons Lodge together with Hand Heart Pocket, the Charity of Freemasons Queensland, has provided $45,000 towards additional equipment including a Lifepak 15 defibrillator, trauma stretcher trolley and a mobile workstation. Mareeba Hospital COVID/ OPERA ward Nurse Unit Manager Tanya Barker said clinicians were extremely grateful for the Freemasons donation in providing medical equipment used to prevent or treat emergency situations during potential COVID-19 public health emergency situations. “The Lifepak 15 defibrillator, trauma stretcher trolley and mobile workstation are critical in maintaining staff and patient safety, reducing and rationalising the use of PPE and supporting optimal health outcomes,” she said. Granite Freemasons Lodge representative Roy Blakeney said the Lodge contributed $5000 in addition to Hand Heart Pocket having provided almost $40,000 through its

Grassroots Grants program. “When the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation put out the call for donations to help support hospitals within the Cairns and Hinterland District amid the pandemic, we felt it was important to respond to this need by supporting our local health service here in Mareeba,” he said.

Mareeba Friends of the Foundation president Neil Setford welcomed the funding, saying it would greatly assist the 52-bed hospital which services about 20,000 residents. “The outpouring of support for our regional hospital has been amazing,” Mr Setford said. “We are especially grateful

to the local Freemasons for their generosity to help equip our local hospital. “Last year the Freemasons also donated funds towards a Malmet blanket warming cabinet and bladder scanner in the Rural Older Persons Evaluation and Rehabilitation Assessment (OPERA) Unit at a cost of almost $25,000.”

Commemorative medallion to recognise surviving war veterans TO acknowledge the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War the Department of Veteran Affairs produced a commemorative medallion and certificate to be issued to all surviving WW2 veterans. It is estimated that there are approximately 12,000 surviving WW2 veterans in Australia. Mareeba RSL Sub Branch Secretary Cheryl Powell Emmerson said she felt honoured to have been instrumental in assisting four Mareeba WW2

veterans to receive their medallions. They are Ronald Ikin (96) RAAF; Leslie Emmerson (96) BAF; Gordon Powell (95) RN; and Bill Nielsen (95) RAN. To further honour these four men, the Mareeba RSL Sub Branch President, Ross Cuzzubbo also paid tribute by announcing their names during the Remembrance Day service on Wednesday, November 11 while Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin sent each a congratulatory letter.

Connection for local farmers MUTCHILBA farmers Vibeke and Michael Gargan will now be able to better connect with the extended world after gaining access to Northern Gulf Resource Management Group’s Open Spaces Internet. The couple had to make do with no mobile coverage and a limited and patchy internet signal which made running their business a challenge. “We live in a mobile black spot, so no mobile phone reception at all, and until recently accessed the internet via a satellite which provides a patchy signal at best,” Vibeke said. “This makes simple stuff, like internet banking, or just answering emails, a lengthy, interrupted and extremely frustrating process.” After contacting the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group’s Building Connectivity team they found that Open Spaces had installed an internet tower on the Mt Emerald Windfarm site, overlooking the Mutchilba Valley.

Mutchilba’s Vibeke Gargan is finally connected with the outside world and appropriate internet courtesy of the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group’s Open Spaces Internet

Now the Gargan’s have internet speed ten times faster than their satellite-based system, they can also access a voice to WI-FI service which enables internethosted voice communications in mobile blackspots. “Everything’s changed for us we couldn’t be happier with our new capacity to communicate,”

Vibeke said. “A whole world has opened up for us; in future we may install cameras near water sources to get real time information on our water usage. “Good internet access is critical, not just for the big cities, but for rural communities.”

2020 RFDS Local Native plants ready to be planted Hero announced

The Trees for the Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands (TREAT) is gearing up for their upcoming planting season where they strengthen connections from rainforest patches to other patches.

FARMERS aren’t the only ones looking forward to the coming wet season with volunteers from Trees for the Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands (TREAT) ready to populate areas with young trees from their native plant nursery. TREAT members grow plants that are native to this part of Far North Queensland as well as looking after the Lake Eacham nursery in partnership with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Restoration Services.

Over the last year 26,059 trees were distributed by the TREAT nursery with 5,250 of those trees being planted at their current project at McLean Ridge where they seek to strengthen the rainforest connectivity between Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine. Dinah Hansman the Media Coordinator from TREAT said there are a variety of reasons why planting native fauna and strengthening these areas is important. “We are trying to improve

wildlife corridors and trees for wildlife move from one patch of remnant rainforest to another,” she said. “The planting does provide other benefits it’s provides more habitat for wildlife and farmers also benefit from this planting. “Providing windbreaks for stock, stopping erosion of streambanks and providing shade for stock are just some of the other uses of the planting season.”

A HELICOPTER pilot who rushed to the aid of a car accident victim on a remote cattle station in North Queensland has been crowned the 2020 RFDS Local Hero Award winner for the Cairns region. Last week The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) announced nine regional Local Hero Award winners, each representing one of its base locations. James Telford, a helicopter pilot, was working on Van Rook Station when alerted to a car accident elsewhere on the property, which is located on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria. One of the first on scene, James realised that the sole passenger needed urgent medical attention. Knowing that a neighbouring station contained an airstrip on which the RFDS could land, James loaded the semi-conscious victim into his helicopter and flew hert to Dorunda Station. James, along with fellow staff from the Gulf Coast Agricultural Company, were able to

further assist the patient until the RFDS crew could land and transport her back to Cairns. The patient fortunately made a full recovery, thanks to the actions of James on that day. Ravenshoe couple Jean and Mervyn Shaw were also recognised for their support of the service with the Hugh McKay Award. The Hugh McKay Award is given to individuals who have generously dedicated themselves and their time to longterm fundraising and philanthropic support of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section). A RFDS spokesperson said “Jean and Mervyn Shaw are dedicated supporters of the RFDS. So much so, the couple were last year made life members of the RFDS Near and Far Auxiliary last year,” they said. “From attending almost every Auxiliary meeting, to heavily assisting in the coordination of RFDS Field Day events, and even making jams and craft works for sale, the Shaw’s go above and beyond in their support of the Service.

“They are first to put their names down, or hands up, to work at stalls or sausage sizzles which raise funds for the RFDS.” RFDS (Queensland Section) CEO Meredith Staib said “On behalf of the RFDS I would like to congratulate all winners for their efforts to support the Flying Doctor. I would also like to thank every single nominee for their ongoing efforts to keep us in the air,” she said. “The calibre of nominations was incredibly high. Such was the difficulty in determining just nine regional winners, we acknowledged five other nominees with special awards honouring their contribution,” she said. “We simply could not perform the work we do without the help of our supporters, so it gives me great pleasure to take this opportunity to recognise their hard work.” Ms Staib said Queenslanders were now encouraged to vote for the 2020 RFDS Local Hero Award winner for Queensland, who would win a $7,500 grant to give back to their community.

The sports wheelchairs will not only give students in wheelchairs the ability to play sport, it will also allow able bodies students to get a better understanding of what life is like in a wheelchair. The original idea came from a group who had organised some chairs for Cooktown in 2013 which were being shared

across Far North Queensland. So instead of bringing the chairs from Cooktown down to the Tablelands, Mareeba and Atherton now have their own chairs. The Tablelands Outdoor Recreation Association (TORA) received a ‘Stronger Communities’ grant to help them to buy some chairs for the

Tablelands. Ange Willett from TORA said they received tremendous support from local businesses “We want to thank all the local business that helped, their names are now embroidered on the back of the chairs,” she said. WITH the days getting hotter it means more people are spending more time in swimming pools but that situation comes with deadly risks if your pool safety barriers are not compliant. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission has launched a safety campaign to educate property owners, pool safety inspectors, property managers, landlords and tenants about their pool safety responsibilities. The Queensland Family and Child Commission’s 201819 Annual Report shows that eight children and young people (aged 0 to 17 years) drowned in Queensland swimming pools in the 2018-2019 financial year. In 2019-2020, Queensland Health reported a total of 83 ‘immersion incidents’ involving young children in private swimming pools around the State. Property owners are encourgaed to use the QBCC website’s Compliance Checklist, which quickly and easily checks if a pool meets the required safety standards. Owners of non-compliant pools could receive an on-the-spot fine of $934.15, or a court-imposed penalty of up to $22,019.25. Property owners and tenants have also been reminded that temporary pools, such as those sold at hardware and department stores, must also comply with pool safety barrier laws. Pool safety laws apply to pools and spas which can be filled with water to a depth of 300mm.

More chairs are on the way with a total of 12 wheelchairs expected to be based at Mareeba High, for the Mareeba cluster of schools. 12 multi-purpose sports wheelchairs will be based at Atherton Basketball and shared with schools and clubs on the Atherton and Evelyn Tablelands and two tennis wheelchairs will be based between Mareeba Tennis and Atherton Tennis.

Take a stand against domestic violence QUEENSLANDERS around the country decorated their letterboxes white last Friday, November 20 for White Ribbon Day to help raise awareness for Domestic Violence. Due to the uncertainty of COVID White Ribbon Australia asked people to decorate their letterboxes white to help raise awareness and start conversations on domestic violence. Queenslanders were asked to decorate their letterboxes with white ribbons, white balloons, white lights, white teddy bears, white flowers, streamers or bed sheets to raise awareness.

Robert Larkin, Ambassador for White Ribbon Australia at Mareeba Community Housing said that domestic and family violence is something that should never occur. “White Ribbon Day is your chance to stand together and protest the violence shown to women and children, domestic and family,” he said. “It is not right, people shouldn’t be getting abused, physically, emotionally or any other way. “No one has a right to abuse anyone so people should take a stance and say no we don’t

want to accept that in our community.” Chair of White Ribbon Queensland Chiu-Hing Chan has said that the statistics surrounding domestic violence in the home have tripled during COVID. “We are looking for support from the community and businesses to assist us in mobilising change,” he said. “The purpose of White Ribbon Day this year is not only to speak about the change that is needed but to also get involved.”

Jason Shaw and Richard Kissick are supporting White Ribbon Day and standing up against domestic and family violence.

Far North welcomes new LGBTI Liaison Officers

Assistant Commissioner Cowden, Senior Constable Piper and Constable Buckley show off the new rainbow QPS flag.

FAR North Queensland now has six officers who are there to help members and liaise with the LGBTI community. Two of the officers will be based in Cairns; there will also be a LGBTI liaison officer based in Edmonton, Cooktown, Aurukun and Bamaga. Both Constable Tara Buckley and Senior Constable Kim Pipe bring a wealth of experience to the LGBTI liaison program, having a background working in remote communities and domestic and family violence. “It’s about visibility and awareness. Our community should know there are police officers who have gone through something similar to what they’re going through. They understand and are here to help,” Senior Constable Piper said. Constable Buckley says she hopes to pass on her skills and knowledge to other officers.

“I can not only help the community but also help my colleagues to develop an understanding and awareness of LGBTI issues.” LGBTI liaison officers undertake the role in addition to their regular duties with both Constable Buckley and Senior Constable Piper being first response general duties officers. The Far North has liaison officers situated in stations from Cairns to the Cape. If you wish to speak with a LGBTI liaison officer, please advise the officer taking your complaint or contact Policelink who will identify a liaison officer in your local area. For general LGBTI related inquiries in the Far North, an email requiring a non-urgent response can be sent to LGBTIProgram.FarNorth@police.qld. gov.au and your enquiry will be attended to by a liaison officer.

New regulations for markets in QLD QUEENSLAND Health has now released a COVID-19 checklist for recurrent markets. This impacts both outdoor and indoor markets in regards to infection control training, record keeping and general practices. Yungaburra and Malanda Market co-ordinators have been working together with Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Health officer Paul Le-Gear and QLD Health, in order to help facilitate the required changes. Nicole Willinger, co-ordinator of the Yungaburra Markets said considering how many of the stallholders attend multiple markets, it would be of great

benefit if all the Tablelands markets had blanket stall holder requirements, and that the advertising of public notices should work in the same way. “It’s important that everybody receives the correct information, and that help is available to those who require it in order to be COVID compliant,” she said. “The easiest way for us to manage this is to have uniform documentation and advertising. That way, no matter which market people are attending, either as a stallholder, facilitator or patron, we should all be on the same page.”

Students learn how to be safe online

Students at Mareeba State High School were taken through the Digital Thumbprint Program last week, the program is offered to schools to better inform their students about their online safety.

STUDENTS at Mareeba State High School (MSHS) participated in a special program last Wednesday that saw them learn how to protect their identities online and combat cyberbullying. The Digital Thumbprint Program offered by Optus has been around since 2013 and since then they have had 300,000 students participate in one of four workshops. Cyberbullying, Cybersecurity, Digital Identity and Digital Discernment are the sessions that are available to the students based on their ages. The year 7 students were taken through processes and learning how to better protect themselves online and the effects of cyberbullying and how to respond to it. Mark Stanley Workshop Facilitator for the Optus Digital Thumbprint Program says the program has been very well received since its inception. “We do start to go into elements of fake news and how to determine what’s real and what’s fake online,” he said. “It’s been imperative to inform kids because they have been using a lot more tech and been online a lot more this year. “The workshop we saw today was on cyberbullying and cybersecurity so we were giving the students the tools to be able to go home and check their own security.”

NINE-YEAR-OLD Mareeba girl Holly Power was diagnosed with diabetes one month ago after mum Lynda said she noticed that Holly was thirsty, lethargic and visiting the toilet a lot during a recent holiday to Cape York. “The symptoms came on quickly over a period of two weeks. We took her straight to the hospital and she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes,” she said. Holly now has a continuous glucose monitoring reader in her arm which can test her blood sugar and feedback to a handheld device. “The reader saves us having to do the finger pricks," said Lynda “which is pretty handy for the 10pm and 2am readings – and she can do it herself at school.” With one person diagnosed every five minutes, diabetes is now becoming the fastest growing chronic disease in Australia. Nicola Hinton, who is the Diabetes Educator at the Cairns Diabetes Centre, said diabetes can affect children and adults of all ages. “For children and families, Type 1 diabetes has a huge impact on a child’s life,” Nicola said. “We work closely with the family, and the child’s school to ensure they have all the tools they need for a safe, happy and healthy child. “Diabetes can develop slowly as in the case of Type 2 diabetes, or more quickly as with

Type 1 diabetes. “With all types of diabetes our role is to help people learn how to manage their diabetes to promote quality of life and avoid the long-term complications of diabetes such as kidney disease, limb amputation and blindness” Nicola said that Type 1 diabetes management has come a long way in the past decades. “We now have newer technologies such as insulin pump therapy and continual glucose monitoring, which for some has had an enormous effect on helping them achieve their personal health goals and improve their quality of life” she said. “To raise awareness and early diagnosis of diabetes in children, we now recommend observing for the Four T’s: tiredness, thirst, increased toilet visits and becoming thinner. Diabetes complications are the third leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Indigenous Australians are three times more likely to have type-2 diabetes compared to non-Indigenous Australians.” Parents are being asked to know the four signs of type 1 diabetes – toilet (frequent urination or bedwetting), thirsty (always asking for fluids), tired (adequate sleep but still tired) and thinner (losing weight). If your child has one or more of these symptoms ask your GP for a finger-prick blood glucose test.

Museum secures piece of Mareeba’s WWII history The FNQ Aviation Museum has recently acquired a Military Issue DC3 transport plane that saw the end of WWII and will soon be on display at their museum.

The FNQ Aviation Museum has recently acquired a shiny new piece to add to their growing collection of aviation history after they recently acquired a Military Issue Douglas DC3 transport plane. The transport aircraft saw flight time during the end phases of WWII in 1945 where it transported cargo, dignitaries, soldiers and paratroopers. The plane was deregistered in Townsville in the 1970’s before being brought up to Mareeba by Syd Beck to be placed into the former Beck War Museum. FNQ Aviation Museum Director Brendan Kent is excited to have procured the aircraft and to put it on display for the public. “Our primary mission is to preserve aircraft and put it on display for the public so that’s what this acquisition was all about,” he said. “This is the same type of aircraft that flew missions out of Mareeba. “In terms of acquisition it was probably one of our easiest even though it is a 29m wingspan aircraft.” The Kennedy Highway had to be closed between the Beck War Museum and the Mareeba Airport on Saturday, November 14 for the plane to be safely escorted to its new home.

venture comedy from Disney Onward is on screen.

THE COMEBACK TRAIL In debt to the mob and in need of a new money making scheme to save his skin, greedy grindhouse film producer, Max Barber, (Robert Deniro) decides to produce a dangerous new film, all for the sake of killing his lead actor in a stunt so he can rake in the insurance money. But when he casts Duke Montana, (Tommy Lee Jones) an aging, washed up movie star as the lead, Max never expects the depressed old drunk to be revitalized by being in front of the camera again. Unable to kill Duke in a basic stunt, Max ups the stakes, putting Duke into ever more dangerous situations. The Comeback Trail is a fun

journey through the underbelly of Hollywood. Littered with a cast of unforgettable and outrageous characters. MISBEHAVIOUR tells an important story well; it's fairly fast-moving, has some great performances and is always engaging. While there's nothing outstanding in the filmmaking department, it's all well-done and supports its narrative by letting the characters and messages lead the way. Speaking of its messages, it has a great overall pro-equality stance that goes deeper than its feminist roots, covering issues like social class and racism. In that regard, it's a very important film for today as it's sadly all too relatable to current affairs. The flick does have a slight issue with the story it wants

to tell, though. It focuses on both the liberation group and the 'Miss World competitors', especially Mbatha-Raw's Jennifer Hosten. ONWARD In a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers go on a journey to discover if there is still a little magic left out there in order to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him. Like any good quest, their journey is filled with magic spells, cryptic maps, impossible obstacles and unimaginable discoveries. When the boys' fearless mom realizes that her sons are missing, she teams up with the legendary wingedlion-scorpion former warrior - The Manticore - and heads off to find them.

Pinata looks to the future Tom Healy, 24, will now manage the year round sales and supply of Pinata pineapples to domestic supermarket customers nationally as well as central markets across the country. His responsibilities include working with growers to plan and forecast the supply of pineapples, liaising with customers to understand their needs and providing supply updates as required. It was at high school, that an agricultural science teacher sparked the idea of agribusiness as a career option and inspired him to study agribusiness at university. Mr Healy has a Bachelor of Agricultural Business from the University of Queensland. “I discovered a real passion for Australian agriculture throughout my studies and I am now excited to see what sort of career I can create in the fast-

FUTURE: New sales and supply manager for Pinata Farms Tom Healy with the new look branding for their Pineapples.

AUSTRALIA’S largest pineapple producer, Pinata Farms is looking to the future with the release of a new-look to the brand and the appointment of Tom Healy to the position of pineapple sales and supply manager. The company, which was started in 1966, has a farm in Mareeba as well as farms stretching all the way from Coffs Harbour up to Darwin. Managing director Gavin Scurr said the new look was the first significant brand update undertaken by the pineapple,

strawberry, raspberry and mango producer in the past 10 years. “The Piñata name is well recognised and loved by consumers and we wanted to leverage off that and modernise our look across all aspects of our business, including labels and packaging for four very different produce lines,” he said. “We were looking for a fresh, vibrant and lively presentation to reflect both our growth since we started growing pineapples in the 1960s, and our future. “For our fruit lines, we set

out to achieve synergy and continuity with pineapple labels, strawberry punnets and mango stickers presenting three different design challenges in terms of size and application.” Pinata Farms engaged a design agency to refresh the brand including the corporate logo and produce logos, iconography, fonts, colours and packaging, with various applications including uniforms, vehicles, farm signage, stationery and merchandise. The refreshed brand is cur-

rently being phased in with Piñata pineapples the first to sport the new look, followed by specialty Honey Gold mangoes this season. The new look sees the corporate Pinata Farms logo revitalised to give a first impression of a smile. The previous corporate bright light green has been refined to become a more earthy, forest green. To go with a new a logo, Piñata Farms have also announced a new sales and supply manager.

paced environment of fresh produce,” he said. As part of his final assessment at university, he collaborated with Pinata Farms on a project examining pineapple shell colour and how it influenced consumer buying behaviour and decision making. Healy sees the challenges of dealing with perishable products as opportunities for creative problem solving. “Forecasting the volume of fruit to market ahead of time is a particularly challenging part of my role. You would think pines would be a rather easy crop to forecast because, in theory, every plant that goes into the ground should produce one piece of fruit in two years,” he said “Anything could happen in that time, you've got to be flexible to react quickly, re-plan and re-execute.”

lar ute market customers. It’s the culmination of years of experience and customer feedback to understand just what North Queenslanders want and need from their utes. And the result is exciting – a bold new design that gives the brand-new Mazda BT-50 an unmistakable road presence, underpinned with the capability and safety credentials that give peace of mind no matter the adventure. Mazda’s Kodo design language is acclaimed for using strong body crease lines and sculpted panels that breathe life into a vehicle even when it’s stationary, creating an inter-play of light, shade and ever changing reflections. Applied to the brandnew Mazda BT-50, powerful crease lines run from the edge of its signature wing and front grille out to the wing mirrors. Then, moving back the sculpting of the doors allows the light to play and offer depth and strength to body colours, particularly the new

GunBlue Mica and Concreate Grey Mica. The shoulder line that runs down the side of the vehicle into the tailgate eventually ends holding the Mazda marque to create an unbroken centre line that flows from front to rear. Undoubtedly, this is one ute with serious road presence and a static stance that says ‘Let’s go Anywhere Now’. But Brand-New Mazda BT-50 is more than just a great exterior. Mazda’s focus on human centric design ensures an interior fit for purpose and beyond. It’s a tough, durable environment but with comfort, style and premium finish to take the fatigue out of travel. R&J Batteries opens new branch on Tablelands R&J Batteries is excited to announce the recent purchase of Tableland Batteries located just outside of Atherton. The acquisition, which marks R&J Batteries’ 6th branch in Queensland and 24th branch since inception, enables the company to service communities in Far North Queensland with ease. R&J Batteries have had a long running association with Tableland Batteries founders Cameron and Jamie De Lai, who have become a wonderful customer with their extremely successful Auto Electrical and Battery business. Post the sale of Tablelands Batteries, Cameron will continue to focus on the auto electrical side of the business which will be operating under the new name of De Lai Auto Electrics & Airconditioning while Jamie will join the R&J Batteries Tablelands team in a sales and warehousing role. “I believe that there are plenty of opportunities to expand our wings and grow the R&J Batteries brand throughout the Tablelands region,” said Ray Robson, Managing Director of R&J Batteries.

“We currently service this area weekly from the R&J Batteries Cairns warehouse. “By taking over this business, it will allow us to further explore new opportunities into regions that we have not serviced in the past.” Speaking of the new R&J Batteries Tablelands branch which is due to open on the 2nd of November 2020, Robson adds, “this is a very productive farming land and there are mining opportunities to be explored. We have a few roles to hire for before we can spread our wings and this will take some time, so our immediate focus will be looking after the existing customers.” “We have always focused on providing the best products and service possible to our customers,” said Cameron De Lai, founder of Tablelands Batteries. “We have enjoyed the same working relationship with R&J Batteries staff. We know that they are going to continue driving the business forward. We wish the company all the best and are keen to continue working with them.” As R&J Batteries prepares for the opening of its

LETTERS to the EDITOR HAVE YOUR SAY

Thank you MSC A FEW issues ago I wrote to your readers about the problems that were facing Kuranda’s residents with the imminent closure of our cemetery. I explained how much of the problem had been created by Councils past and how the present Council’s proposals were diametrically opposed to the Kuranda community’s wishes. Today, Council agreed to purchase the adjoining block of land that had fortuitously become available. Kuranda’s cemetery will extend onto this land and our history, ancestors, culture and respect for our past will remain cohesive in our community. I do understand that this decision was difficult for the Council. An un-budgeted expenditure of up to M$1- makes lots of problems and requires a lot of justification. New strategies need to be implemented to cover and repay that expenditure. But the Mayor, Councillors and officers made the hard decision; the caring decision; the morally right decision – and I commend and thank them. Mark Freeman KURANDA

Donate and support children with cancer THE impact of COVID-19 has hit communities around the world hard this year, particularly those with significant health issues such as cancer. For families with a child with cancer, COVID-19 has been devastat-

EMAIL: editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au

ing and they need more support than ever. We are working with families across Australia, whose anxieties are unimaginable due to the very real risk the pandemic poses to their child’s health. On top of that, they have additional financial pressures, with many not knowing how they will pay their petrol costs to and from hospital, energy bills, or groceries. The reality is when you have a child with cancer, the demands are unrelenting, 24/7 and you never know what the next 24 hours will bring. The additional stress of COVID only amplifies the challenges these families face every day, and the stories are heartbreaking. Redkite is a lifeline for these families, providing the real and essential practical, financial and emotional support they need. We receive no government funding to deliver these frontline services to help these families get through each day. We have seen demand for our counselling and support service increase by more than 30 per cent and requests for financial assistance were up by more than 15 per cent, as many already stretched families fell victim to COVID economic woes. But at the same time, Redkite has also been significantly impacted by COVID. We have been dealt a significant financial blow, losing more than $1 million in revenue just from not being able to run our flagship annual fundraising events due to the virus. While the financial impacts of COVID saw many charity or-

ganisations withdraw programs and find themselves unable to deliver some services, this was not an option for us. It wasn’t an option to step away from the frontline of cancer support. We could not leave these families to struggle alone through not only their child’s illness, but the unimaginable stress of the pandemic. We do, however, need help to enable us to deliver our essential services, to an evergrowing number of families who have a child with cancer, including those in your local community. We would appreciate the support from the Mareeba community for our first-ever, week-long national appeal to the Australian community. The ‘$24FOR24’ kids cancer fundraising campaign urges Australians around the country to donate just $24 to help a family experiencing childhood cancer, to make it through another 24 hours. The campaign kicks off on 18 November and runs for one week. I encourage all Australians to donate just $24 to the ‘$24FOR24’ campaign to ensure children with cancer and their families can continue to receive the essential support they need by visiting 24for24.org.au Monique Keighery CEO Redkite

Thanks for the news WELL done to our Express Newspaper, it’s wonderful to see how you have grown and grown after the ‘Murdoch Mess’ with the closing of two Tableland newspapers, I bet they are

spitting seeing how well you are going. It is great to see a locally owned and run paper really succeeding at this time. I was a commercial artist just around the corner from the News newspaper printing office on North Terrace in Adelaide when Rupert Murdoch took over from his father at his fathers death. Rupert just had a Newspaper Shop on a street corner at that time but very quickly made the most of his new position. It wasn’t long until the old print shop suspiciously burned down, even the cat was saved but that is 60 years ago. Now you have taken over up here, which somehow feels to me like it was deserved. I know what it is like having owned a small newspaper in the past and having been the newspaper cartoonist with ten years dreaming up the much loved ‘Gunnadoo Gully’ cartoon series. I guess the only thing you don’t have is a weekly cartoon for a bit of a chuckle. Over the months we have watched the growth and development of The Express with good feelings with what has been a difficult time for many people in Australia. Now as we come close to the festive season and the New Year, I am sure that everyone in FNQ will wish you well as you try your hardest to give us the news that would have been lost if you hadn’t stepped in so deftly when Murdoch pulled the pin. Here’s to a great new year hey. Grahame West RAVENSHOE

OPINION With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1

Why free speech isn’t free LAST week celebrity chef and so-called wizard Pete Evans discovered the awful truth about free speech, it’s not really free. Pete Evans had two forehead slapping moments in one week, the first was when he suggested that coronavirus didn’t exist. He made the controversial claims during an interview where he scoffed at medical claims that humans can spread COVID-19. “‘I choose not to believe that narrative because it doesn’t make any sense to me.” he said. Then Evans doubled down on his comments and posted a cartoon with some Nazi symbolism. In less than 48 hours Evans was dropped by Channel 10, Big W and his publisher Pan Macmillan. Cookware brand Baccarat and homeware brand House also cut their ties with him. The social media militia went crazy with cries over censorship, the lack of free speech and the infringement upon Pete’s (and his believers rights and beliefs) The same thing happened in 2019 when Israel Folau was let go by the ARU for comments he made about homosexuals burning in hell. Free speech is a twoway street, if you fight for free speech you must also fight for freedom of choice. Pete Evans is actually free to say whatever he wants about COVID or his magical light machine, but Big W, Pan

Macmillan, Channel 10 and others also have the right and the freedom to severe ties with him. Same for Israel, he can say what ever likes in his church, but the ARU are also allowed to enjoy the freedom of not employing him anymore. I could write anti-Semitic, homophobic, racist, and sexist comments right here and now and my boss has the freedom to boot me onto the street and ask me never to return. A lot of people claim that in Australia we have laws protecting freedom of speech, we actually don’t. Australia does not have explicit freedom of speech in any constitutional or statutory declaration of rights, with the exception of political speech. It is estimated that last week alone Mr Evans lost several million dollars from the above sponsors and partnerships. So his free speech, actually cost him…a lot. Some of Pete Evans fans have claimed that reporting his posts to social media is actually “killing free speech.” They then attempt (unsuccessfully) to kill our free speech. Your right to freedom of speech can’t infringe on my right to freedom of speech. What people like Pete Evans, Israel Folau and their followers have got to remember is that they have the right to speak, but we have the right to stop listening.

PAGE 40 The Express, Wednesday, November 25, 2020

Oct 24 to Nov 22 Consider selling your homemade crafts at the flea market. Your boss may be on the rampage and you certainly don’t want to be the one to take the brunt of a bad situation. Snap out of it.

Pleasure trips will be favourable and bring about possible romance. You may want to tell someone how you really feel. Your fun loving approach will be admired and appreciated by others.

Capricorn

Dec 22 to Jan 20

If you’re uncertain of your feelings, keep your opinions to yourself. You should be putting in some overtime. Do something together and you’ll be surprised how sweet a deal you can make.

Residential moves will be favourable. Be prepared to deal with groups and organisations of greater magnitude. You will enjoy socialising and unusual forms of entertainment. Knowledge can be acquired if you listen.

Scorpio

Libra Sept 24 to Oct 23

April 21 to May 21

Aug 23 to Sept 23 You may want to make changes in your home environment. You will have some problems with children, but if you are patient you will win their favour. If you can, try to work out of your home this month.

June 22 to July 22 You will be best suited to doing things around the house this week. You should put your efforts into creative projects. Discover opportunities based on the individuals you mingle with this month.

Method

Taurus

Virgo

Cancer

Cherry, Choc Balls! Ingredients

Aries

March 21 to April 20 Raise your self esteem if you want to get back into the mainstream again. Use discretion, especially if involved with someone from work. New love connections can be made through group associations.

Gemini

May 22 to June 21

Get busy. Use your charm to get your own way. You should socialise with clients or upper echelons of your industry if possible. Love could develop with someone of a different cultural background.

Leo

July 23 to Aug 22

Trips, educational pursuits, or projects that could lead to new outlooks should be on your agenda. You’re likely to encounter new partners if you take short trips.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 to Dec 21

You may find yourself in a heated dispute with a friend if you try to change your mind. You must be sure not to be frivolous, because as the saying goes, easy come, easy go.

Pisces

Aquarius

Feb 20 to March 20

Jan 21 to Feb 19

Your creative ability will surface, giving you good ideas for ways of making money. You will have a great deal of insight when dealing with others. You need to be around friends and family.

Don’t push your luck with your boss. Don’t let your emotions interfere with moneymaking deals. Someone may be trying to damage your reputation.

Atherton clings to top spot in CFN ladder ATHERTON will hold their position at the top of the Cricket Far North competition ladder by just a point after their second loss of the season on Saturday at Loder Park. Atherton elected to bat first and were immediately put on notice by a sharp Mulgrave bowling attack. Key wickets fell cheaply in a batting collapse which saw the home team 7-64. Brendan Nasser dug in to form partnerships with Pete Sceresini and Logan Poggioli taking the score to 101, and tailenders Hadyn Steele and Seppe Barletta added a 30 run partnership to post 131. Mulgrave never looked troubled in their chase despite

losing a couple of big wickets. Dan Parnell and Seppe Barletta took 2 wickets apiece but the visitors reached the total comfortably in the 30th over to claim a 6 wicket win. The competition moves to a 50 over format for the remainder of the season, with the next match on Saturday, December 5 – Atherton v Cassowary Coast at Miller Oval, Tully. RESULT: Atherton 131 (B Nasser 40, W Nasser 25, S Barletta 19) Def. by Mulgrave 4-132 (D Parnell 2-17, S Barletta 2-37)

Atherton batsman Chris Adams.

Mareeba Water workouts to Thirds raise money for DV enjoy first win of season

MAREEBA Thirds had their first win of the season over the weekend while the seconds have continued on their losing streak going down in an away game. Thirds were up against Barron at Borzi Park on Sunday and looked in good stead batting first, ending up with a respectable total of 4/116. Barron never looked comfortable out in the middle with no one really able to get the ball rolling and put up some decent scores. They came close to Mareeba’s total but fell just four runs short with the fall of their last wicket. Seconds travelled to Port

Douglas to face off against the Douglas Muddies on Sunday in overcast and hot conditions. Mareeba was sent into bat and the top order was shaken with wickets falling regularly. The exception was opener Brendan Falvo who has continued his fine form knocking 42 off 111 balls lasting until the last couple of overs in Mareeba’s batting innings, Mareeba ended on 7/139 off their allotted overs. Mareeba was then completely picked apart by Douglas opener Ben Shrimpton who smashed an unbeaten 94 off 64 balls to propel his team to an easy victory in the 23rd over.

Members of the water aerobics class that participated in a special domestic violence awareness class in Mareeba on Saturday, November 21.

AFTER losing her daughter to domestic violence, Valerie Mackintosh went on a missions to raise money and spread awareness for domestic violence. Every year since losing her daughter Mrs Mackintosh has

raised money on or near White Ribbon Day and donated that money to local domestic violence services. This year Mrs Mackintosh has decided to donate the money she raised from her Saturday water aerobics class

to the Mareeba Domestic Violence Centre. “I lost a daughter to domestic violence and I just want to get the word out there that it is not on,” Mrs Mackintosh said. “It’s to bring awareness to the atrocities of domestic vio-

lence and the money that we raised will go towards Mareeba domestic violence victims. “If I could give enough money to supply one mobile phone to a domestic violence victim so that they stay safe and connected that’s good.”
