Rotary celebrates the year that was MAREEBA Rotary has hosted their annual changeover event welcoming in the new board of directors and president for the year ahead.

The changeover took place at the Mareeba Heritage Centre on Friday, August 13 with a numerous Rotarians and community members attending.

Maree Lopez, who held the title of president for the past year, has now handed the torch over to James Howe.

Mrs Lopez said that despite a tough year she was happy to see the FNQ Rotary Field Days succeed.

“We had a lovely dinner at the Mareeba Heritage Centre and it was just a celebration of the year that was,” she said.

“It was a quieter year, but I paid homage and thanked the Rotary members that helped with the Field Days, I certainly paid my respects to them and their hard work.

“I got to thank everyone and welcome James into his new role as president for the coming year.”

Howe has been involved in Mareeba Rotary for seven years, seeing it as an effective way to connect and give back.

“I got involved in Rotary after returning from university,” he said.

“Rotary is a great way to give back and reconnect with the community I grew up in.

“I'm very excited to be stepping into the shoes of president and looking forward to what’s to come.”

Nina Akselsen Grant was recognised as the 2020/21 Rotarian of the Year for her outstanding contributions to the club, even while being stuck a world away.

“Everyone has a different take on the award but as president you see what work goes into the year,” Mrs Lopez said.

“While she was still stuck in Norway Nina did an amazing amount of work not only for Mareeba Rotary but for the Field Days as well.

“It was just crazy what she was able to do from the other side of the world.”

Range delays to add to motorists’ frustrations

FRUSTRATED Tablelanders already annoyed by an ongoing single lane closure to the Barron River bridge at Kuranda face the prospect of even more disruptions in coming days and months as separate works slated for the troublesome Kuranda Range now get underway.

State Government’s touting of its flashy new technology upgrade that, when finished, will eventually provide “variable speed limit signs and real time travel information” is of small consolation to long suffering local road users that simply want both a functioning Barron bridge and reliable road way between Cairns and the Tablelands.

Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) confirmed the initial works to the Range will involve the installation of conduits to provide power to proposed Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) with motorists to encounter single lane closures and reduced speed limits between 6pm-6am while the works are carried out.

TMR said a key outcome of the works is the ITS treatments will enable them, through the newly laid technology, to rapidly detect and manage incidents throughout the range.

The ITS systems are expected to be installed between Smithfield and Kuranda’s Rainforestation Nature Park.

Meanwhile, as the Labor Government mooted the benefits the improved digital enhancements will provide, Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch expressed his views on both the Barron River bridge and the Kuranda Range.

“It’s now time to explore and invest in alternative routes to connect Cairns with the Tablelands, such as the Bridle Track proposal,” Mr Entsch said during a recent Parliamentary address.

“This time the Queensland Government can’t blame anyone else for their own incompetence and negligence. This is on them.

“The Queensland Government need to cough up the cash to replace the bridge and reassure an already nervous community that the current bridge won’t collapse into the Barron River.

“This brings me to the Kuranda Range, a major route in my electorate.

“I understand the newly formed Kuranda Range bypass committee has already held a few public forums on this important issue.

“I’ve always been a big supporter of finding a solution to the issue regarding the Kuranda

“I have, on numerous occasions, approached the Queensland Government on this issue.

“I’ve written on several occasions to the Queensland Transport and Main Roads minister, Mark Bailey, urging him to consider solutions for the Kuranda Range.

“In fact, I have asked him to include the Kuranda Range as a road of strategic importance given its vital role in connecting the

Tablelands with Cairns.

“To date these approaches have fallen on deaf ears.”

Lastly Kuranda Range bypass advocates Bob Katter MP and Shane Knuth MP have called on Minister for Roads Mark Bailey to fast track the release of a $1.6M Queensland Government report commissioned to investigate capacity, safety and efficiency improvements of transport routes between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands, including

the Bridle Track.

Both believe such a move would assist in the Federal Government becoming involved in any serious move to construct a new inland highway between Cairns and Mareeba.

“I believe fast tracking the completion of the study is of vital importance to ensure the State Government can take advantage of the Australian Government’s $4.9 billion Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) initiative,”

Mr Knuth said.

“I understand the Federal Transport Minister would seriously consider any approach by the Queensland State Government requesting funding for the alternative route.

“A new inland highway will save Tablelands and Cairns motorists 30 minutes in travel time when compared to the existing route, and it would allow greater production in agriculture and mining.”

“Mum & Dad built up the family farm for the kids and a profitable future.

But the kids are adults now with their own families and mature arrangements have to be made to secure everyone’s future. Use share farming agreements to document interfamily / entity arrangements and avoid the misunderstandings.”

Controlled burns for Mareeba

The cause of a fire which gutted Mareeba businesses, Hort St Café and Floral Magic remains undetermined.

Detectives seeking witnesses to car fire

BY MICHAEL WARREN TABLELANDS detectives investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed a white Mazda station wagon and caused extensive damage to the carport it was parked in around 5am last Sunday morning have urged the public to assist them with the matter.

Police have thrown the call out for any witnesses who saw anyone loitering or acting suspicious near or around the vehicle’s Strattmann St address in Mareeba between 12am to 6am on Sunday, August 15 to come forward and get in touch with

them.

Additionally Police have also encouraged anyone with any CCTV footage of the surrounding area during the same timeframe to also get in contact.

“At this stage we have spoken to a number of persons of interest, however there have been no charges, and our investigations are ongoing in relation to this matter,” Detective Senior Sergeant and Officer-in-Charge of the Tablelands CIB Brett Devine told The Express.

Meantime, local detectives continue to investigate the cause of a fire that ripped through both Hort St Café and Floral Magic

on July 23.

“Based on current investigations we’re still not in a position to determine and definitively rule if the cause of the fire was either completely accidental, or a deliberate act,” Mr Devine said.

“At this time we haven’t spoken to anyone of interest regarding this matter.”

Mr Devine also emphasised that all three recent fires in Mareeba – the Performance Motors workshop fire on June 29, the Hort St and Floral Magic blaze on July 23 and the Strattman St car and garage fire on August 15 are not linked.

Areas of the Mareeba township will be undergoing regular controlled burns in coming weeks.

MAREEBA Shire Council has issued a reminder to residents that there will be numerous controlled burns being conducted across Mareeba in the coming weeks.

Granite Creek, Zenel Road and the Barron River near the end of Kearney St and Couper Street have been identified as the upcoming sites for burns.

The timing for the burns is weather dependent to reduce the risk of the fires expanding beyond what was intended.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said that the burns are done at the most appropriate time of year before the hot weather arrives.

“Fuel reduction burns form a major component of Council's fire management strategy,” she said.

“The burns are conducted at the most appropriate time of the year when the vegetation is in a condition to be burnt.

“Getting the burns done before the hot weather arrives is

important to reduce risk, we encourage all landowners to begin their preparations as early as possible.”

The burns are to be carried out in collaboration with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy.

“Between them, these two State Government departments can supply crew, vehicles and appliances.”

BY MICHAEL WARREN A LOCAL aviation enthusiast is free to continue his passion of attending to his Boeing Stearman plane inside a hangar at Mareeba airport after he took his case against Mareeba Shire Council to the Supreme Court – and won.

Richard Rudd has a 40-year lease on the hangar and has used it since 2016.

However, in January local Council changed the locks and told a perplexed Mr Rudd he breached the lease because the conditions of the contract were for aircraft occupation only, and not maintenance works, to any aircraft inside the hangar.

Further, local Council accused the 82 year-old of using the hangar for accommodation purposes because it housed both

the performance of maintenance and repair work… in order to maintain aircraft in, or return to, a state of air worthiness.”

Furthermore, Mr Henry said “the lease contains no clause which expressly or by implication limits the times during which Mr Rudd’s conduct cause annoyance, nuisance or inconvenience to nearby occupiers… however no such behavioral breach was there.”

Council was ordered to pay Mr Rudd’s legal fees and restore possession of the hangar to him.

Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks told The Express it had complied with Mr Henry’s decision.

“Council respects the decision of the court,” he said.

“The judge's interpretation of the approved use of the hangar was different to Mareeba

a bed and a bar bridge.

In addition Council also claimed Mr Rudd’s daily and regular presence at the hangar was beyond what was required to simply store his plane at the facility, suggesting the plane lover was taking part in commercial activities at the location.

However Justice Henry dismissed Council’s claims and ruled entirely in favour of Mr Rudd.

“It is well known that an aircraft hangar is a large building, usually located at an aerodrome, in which aircraft are stored,” Mr Henry explained.

“It is similarly well-known that the customary or ordinary use of an aircraft hangar is not confined purely to the act of parking and storing aircraft therein and that its use includes

“Council removed padlocks from the building on the morning of Thursday, 12 August 2021, and returned the keys for the hangar to Mr Rudd when he attended the Council office that same day.”

The Express reached out to Mr Rudd for reaction and comment however he was unable to be contacted before the paper’s deadline.

MSC looks to stamp out youth crime MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) is making a desperate plea to the State Government asking them to make legislative changes to urgently address youth crime in the community.

For what seems like years the Mareeba community has been plagued by an ever-growing cohort of youth who continue to steal, rob, break and enter and have now even resorted to arson.

These youth are constantly caught by police, but soft courts have seen them released back out onto the streets time and time again with nothing more

than a slap on the wrist and a promise to “do better next time.”

Now MSC is submitting a motion to the Local Government Association Queensland (LGAQ) to address the growing curve of youth crime.

LGAQ is the peak body for local government in Queensland, providing them a better avenue and voice at the state and federal level.

“Addressing youth crime and antisocial behaviour is beyond Council’s mandate,” MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said.

“However, by seeking the

support of members of LGAQ to advocate for change, we have an opportunity to bring this issue to the attention of the Queensland Government.”

Mayor Toppin acknowledges the work that numerous government and not-for-profit agencies undertake to reduce youth crime and improve the lives of young people but is asking for more.

Council acknowledges that the incidence of youth crime in the community, and across the state, is costly, causing fear and division, and a significant financial burden.

The full recommendation that MSC is submitting to LGAQ: 1. That the State increase the penalties and consequences for criminal acts by youth offenders and potentially guardians.

2. That the State introduce legislation and increases funding that: a) Allows state and community service agencies to provide targeted intensive support to identified families

where there is a lack of parental care or threat, that reinforces parental responsibilities to enable children to feel safe and cared for by their family. b) Reinforces and supports parents to provide adequate care for children / youth and provide mechanisms to deal with those parents who cannot or will not.

3. That the State provides

additional funding to agencies to provide support and facilities where youth can be safely housed and provided guidance and help for those situations when living at home is not a safe option. This includes education and trade skill opportunities.

4. That the State engages with Councils, via the LGAQ on how to address these issues.

Rates rise for TRC RESIDENTS in the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) area will have their rate notices hitting mailboxes and inboxes at the end of August.

TRC like all councils, use the Department of Resources’ (DoR) land valuations in the calculation of their rates.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti has informed residents that these rate notices will not be “run-of-

the-mill.”

“DoR land valuations earlier this year have certainly complicated our rates process,” he said.

“If we had a spike in land valuations in just one area, we could capture and manage that particular area, however on this occasion the changes to land valuations have occurred across the entire region.

“There is certainly no easy fix, but we’ve done our best to manage this, acting responsibly and fairly.”

TRC has decided to soften the rises by averaging the valuations over two years.

More road projects for the north THE far north is seeing more vital upgrades to its road infrastructure with several new projects announced including Dimbulah and Malanda. $44.1 million will be shared across eight projects in Cairns and surrounding areas ranging from intersection upgrades to road widening.

The Malanda to Atherton road will be getting some much-needed overtaking lanes

valued at $3.6 million while the Mareeba to Dimbulah road will be getting widened with $5.25 million being used.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the funding will deliver crucial road safety improvements across Cairns and Far North Queensland while also supporting shovel-ready construction activity.

vides a critical boost to local jobs and the economy in an uncertain environment, but it also delivers life-saving upgrade works to keep people safe on our roads,” he said.

“The most important thing we can do for our community is ensure we all get home safely as currently around 1200 people die and 40,000 are seriously injured on our roads each year.”

Locals enjoy opening of new library

THE new Mareeba Library opened its door last Monday, August 16 with over 50 people rushing in to enjoy the new facilities in just three hours after opening.

A coffee station, meeting room, and expanded computer access is just a small amount of the new improvements made including a stunning mural covering an entire wall of the library.

Located at the Cedric Davies Community Hub on Anzac Avenue the new library also sports a much-needed upgrade to its parking now with an expansive parking lot available for use.

Library Supervisor Andrea Crooks said that while the old library was iconic it was much too small to be effectively used by staff and the public.

“The best thing about the new library is more space but there are also more services we can offer now,” she said.

“We have included programs to be run again which we had to stop at the old library, we had no room.”

The staff themselves now have their own office areas within the new library, quite the upgrade from their donga at the old library.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin is encouraging all community members to visit and enjoy the new library.

“It is my hope that all people feel welcome to come and experience the Cedric Davies Community Hub for themselves, and to share in the benefits of this facility, particularly our new library,” she said.

Multicultural Festival set to highlight weekend

The Multicultural festival is back on this weekend, showing off the region’s cultural diversity.

ARNOLD Park in Mareeba is set to display dozens of cultures

from across the world, with the Mareeba Multicultural Festival

making a comback this weekend.

The well known Festival was forced to cancel last year due to COVID, but this year promises to be better than ever.

Mareeba Multicultural Fes-

tival President Jennifer Murat said that they are very excited to go ahead on the weekend.

“It's really exciting for us and it is really good to hold the festival this year with a lot of public interest,” she said.

“We have our regular stalls this year including the Italians, Spanish and Albanians as well as some Indian food and a Brazilian BBQ. “It is a great day for everyone to come along, with social

STRUGGLING businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector have been thrown a lifeline with the announcement of an increased Queensland COVID Business Support Grant program, offering $600 million.

The Queensland and Australian Government’s have agreed to fund the program under a 50:50 cost-share.

Businesses can apply for a grant of $5000 intended to be used for business expenses

with three additional payments on offer.

An extra $5000, $10,000 or $15,000 is available on top of the initial $5000 depending on the size of the business.

The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) has welcomed this announcement has been in extensive talks with country leaders, pushing for urgent action for tourism and hospitality businesses.

“We have made a desperate plea to both governments this

week for further support for our operators,” QTIC Chief Executive Officer Daniel Gschwind said.

“Given the dire situation that our industry has been placed in with continuous COVID disruptions.

“This expanded program will go a lot further in giving hope and an urgent cash injection to businesses who are barely hanging on.”

The grant will be available to operators in Queensland,

including those not in a lockdown area, who have experienced a decline in turnover of more than 30 percent.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said that any help offered to the struggling industries is welcome.

“Any help that is offered is good… there is always the argument that there could be more,” he said.

“These grants are an opportunity to get some assistance.”

Crimestoppers walk success MORE than 150 people were up at the crack of dawn last Sunday for the second annual Crime Stoppers fundraising walk.

140 walkers loaded into buses from the Walkamin Community Sports Hall and set off for the Mt Emerald Wind Farm, while 22 walkers did the Rocky Creek Igloo walk.

Some people even made the

trip from as far as Townsville to be involved in the walk with other coming from Mossman, Cairns, Innisfail and of course the Tablelands.

Crime Stoppers Far Northern Area Committee treasurer Norma Moloney was extremely happy with the morning, receiving some great feedback.

“We are so grateful to all the

walkers for getting behind this event and showing their support for Crime Stoppers,” they said.

“We could not have put on this event without the wonderful support from our business community.”

After completing the walk the walkers were treated to a well earnt steak burger, watermelon and some bananas.

Audit on Queensland’s biggest builders QUEENSLAND’S building watchdog has bared its fangs at the state’s biggest building companies that have been subject to debt complaints in the past 12 months, putting them through an audit.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) is targeting category 4-7 licensees that have had a monies-owed complaint or adjudication complaint in the past year.

QBCC Commissioner Brett

Basset said the audits would ascertain licensees’ compliance with their obligations under the Building Industry Fairness (BIF) Act. “The Act requires a person who receives a payment claim to pay the claimed amount in full and on time, or issue a payment schedule,” he said.

“We want to make sure that these debts aren’t potentially an indicator of other financial issues, or of unfair business practices by our biggest licen-

“By auditing now, we can, if necessary, take action to help prevent future nonpayment issues, which can be damaging to our industry and its participants.”

VPG making dreams a reality

The James Cook Museum in Cooktown has received over $150,000 for much needed repairs to keep the residing artefacts safe.

Funding for history preservation Ravenshoe local Keisha Huet has started pursing her dreams of becoming a veterinary nurse with the help of a local organisation.

AT JUST 16 years old, Tablelands local Keisha Huet made the decision to look outside of school and start thinking of other opportunities, dreaming of becoming a veterinary nurse.

Aiming to complete a Certificate III in Animal Studies Keisha faced one big wall on her journey, age, Keisha was two years too young at the time to start pursuing her dream.

Seeking an interim opportunity to build skills, further her studies and work towards her goal, Ravenshoe State School referred Keisha to Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG).

VPG helps young aspiring workers to build their skills and

explore alternative education opportunities.

VPG Youth Development Coach, Gisella Joslin has been working alongside Keisha to support and encourage her on her education journey, giving her well-deserved praise on her efforts and achievements.

“Keisha is an amazing young person who we have had the opportunity to see flourish,” she said.

“Her confidence and communication skills have grown, and she has taken every opportunity in her stride.

“We are incredibly proud of how far she has come.”

VPG offered a learning en-

vironment adapted to Keisha’s specific skills and capabilities where she was supported to develop and strengthen her social skills, giving her the confidence to start pursuing her education and employment opportunities.

Through VPG’s youth transition programs, Keisha has completed study in rural operations to build her skills and launch her career in animal studies.

She is now currently pursuing work experience opportunities with local veterinary surgeries across the Tablelands in hope to gain industry experience in animal care.

OVER $150,000 will be used to ensure priceless artefacts in the James Cook Museum in Cooktown are preserved for generations to come.

The former convent which is now owned and operated by the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) is one of Cooktown’s major attractions, however its roof has fallen into disrepair.

It houses an extensive collection of local Guugu Yimithiir artefacts along with an original anchor and canon from the HMB Endeavour, as well as a model of the ship dating to the early twentieth century.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said that the $155,000 would be used to repair the leaking roof, ensuring the historical

artefacts in the museum could be appreciated for generations to come.

“The James Cook Museum is one of Cooktown’s major attractions and it was important to ensure the historical artefacts contained inside were preserved,” he said.

“Once the urgent repairs works are completed, it will ensure the museum can continue to be appreciated by the thousands of people who visit each year.”

The museum also celebrates the history of the past convent including the nuns and children who lived there until the 1940s.

It also displays the stories of the numerous Chinese immigrants that made their way to Australia in the Gold Rush era in Far North Queensland.

National Trust of Australia (Queensland) Acting CEO Jayme Cuttriss thanked the Australian Government for the funding to support desperately needed repair works.

“This museum is important to the community, to the visitors to Cooktown and to Australia as it houses the fascinating stories of Cooktown,” he said.

“Including the first recorded Act of Reconciliation between Lt. Cook and the Guugu Yimithirr.

“Cooktown is a very special place and I am so pleased that we will be able to receive this much needed funding to secure the convent building and improve the visitor experience.”

The great race returns

One of the hopeful returning teams for the Great Wheelbarrow Race for 2022, the IndieStructables.

THROUGH trials and tribulations, The Great Wheelbarrow Race has been fully revived in its three-day glory as they look ahead to bring the race back for

2022.

Much to the dismay of veteran racers and committee members The Great Wheelbarrow Race was unfortunately can-

celled this year with not enough submissions being received to run the race.

During lockdowns, the committee pulled out all the stops trying to get the event approved and although they were able to get a one-day event approved, three days proved too much.

Now looking ahead to 2022 The Great Wheelbarrow Race committee chair Locky Benstead in encouraging people to get excited for next year's event.

“We are planning to return to the three-day format in 2022,” he said.

“The Wheelbarrow Race is iconic, nowhere else does this.”

The 140km gruelling journey is unlike any other found in Australia and possibly the wider world, following in the footsteps and wheelbarrow tracks of old Australians during the region’s gold rush.

Not only is the event looked

forward to by the competitors but the towns and businesses the race travels through and connects.

“In terms of tourism the wheelbarrow race is a real opportunity for those western towns to get a free tourism drive,” Mr Benstead said.

“A much needed and extra drive with the race running through those communities.”

Mr Benstead also had some words to the veteran and newcomer competitors alike about next year’s race.

“Don’t let this race run its course, come back we need to keep this going,” he said.

“We need you, the teams are what makes the race.

“If you’ve always thought about it and never done it here is your opportunity to do something that is done nowhere else.”

Volunteers needed for regions greatest race WHILE it is looking like green lights for the 2022 Great Wheelbarrow Race to continue the committee has asked for assistance in the form of volunteers and new committee members.

Three people have stepped down from roles in the committee due to various reasons and now there are some important shoes to fill.

Like many important events in the Mareeba shire and across the country, the Great Wheelbarrow Race couldn’t run without volunteers.

“When you run an event as big as the Great Wheelbarrow Race, that encompasses two nights and three days, your volunteer base is critical,” Great Wheelbarrow Race committee chair Locky

Benstead said.

“It’s about having people on the ground who want to be a part of the community and be a part of the Great Wheelbarrow Race.”

Longstanding committee members Rob Miller, Deb Qazim and Terry Roos have all stepped down for various reasons, leaving these committee positions vacant.

“I thank these outgoing members for their years of commitment and hard work because without those three the race wouldn’t have happened,” Mr Benstead said.

Cruising In with the Atherton Men’s Shed The Atherton men’s Shed Cruise In will be back on against next month, giving local car, bike and truck lovers a casual night out.

THE Atherton Men’s Shed will be hosting its next Cruise In on Friday September 3, with vintage muscle cars revving up for the event.

Atherton Men’s Shed Secretary John Whyte said that the event held five times a year, is

a great social event for families across the region.

“Motorist enthusiasts from across the region who are looking for a free social night out are welcome to come along,” he said.

“It's a great way for families

to come together and look at the cars that mum or dad may have had when they were younger.

“We believe as a free casual event it really contributes to the communities health and wellbeing.”

A new 500 kilolitre water reservoir has delivered essential water security to the Chillagoe community.

In addition to boosting the usable holding capacity, the new reservoir meets all cyclone rating standards and provides greater capacity for fire-fighting purposes and potential drinking water, strengthening the township’s resilience in a disaster situation.

The $1.1 million project was predominantly co-funded through the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Funding Program and the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions Program and had been necessitated by the failing steel reservoirs.

The original reservoirs were decommissioned and removed upon completion of this project.

Talaroo enjoys stellar opening

Georgetown history celebrated THE Georgetown community was out in force over last weekend as they had their 100+1-year celebration with hundreds lining the streets for markets stalls, food, fun and floats.

The celebration was pushed back from last year due to COVID and it certainly didn’t disappoint with nearly 400 people in the streets well until midnight on some nights.

“The opening (on Friday, August 13) was an incredible and exciting day for Ewamian People everywhere,” an excited Talaroo Hot Springs spokesperson told The Express.

“It was amazing to celebrate the hard work and dedication of so many people over so many years in achieving this great

milestone.

“We’re so proud to showcase our very special and unique Talaroo Hot springs, promoting Ewamian culture and showcasing Ewamian country.

In the future guests will be able to explore other parts of the Talaroo Station property including the Einasleigh River and will be provided a mud map on arrival.

Students explore the science of food

BY ELLIE FINK STUDENTS gathered around to watch their peers eat dried crickets and make 5-minute ice cream with Mareeba State High School’s (MSHS) science department hosting their annual National Science Week.

National Science Week calls upon organisations, groups and individuals across the country to make up one of the country’s largest science festivals.

MSHS held two main events, a bug eating competition held by the science ambassadors last Wednesday and the Grade 12 Science in Practise class hosting activities for Grade 7 students last Friday.

Head of Department for Science, Jason Richardson said that this week MSHS dove into the science of food, this year's Science Week theme.

“This year's topic was food and Grade 11 and 12 students hosted events to try and promote food future trends and explain some of the Science behind everyday food products,” he said.

“I was able to facilitate and guide the students to develop and run their own activities.

“There was a lot of personal development and learning beyond the Science curriculum that occurs when older students run events for younger students.”

dor Daniel Penn helped host the bug eating competition and said that this week has been a way to raise awareness in science and its future. ”It is an opportunity to raise awareness to people about science related activities and is also a way to have some fun,” he said.

“In the bug eating competition we gave contestants four grams of crickets to see who could eat it in the shortest amount of time, as well as some flavoured bugs on the side for taste testing.

“The record for the bug eating competition was 42 seconds in the end.”

Worst electorates for road deaths in the QLD RACQ has revealed Queensland’s most dangerous electorates for road deaths, as the State tragically recorded more than 172 fatalities so far this year.

As part of the Club’s month-long road safety campaign, the electorate of Callide, was named as the worst location for fatalities in the State between January and July this year, with 11 deaths recorded.

Nanango had the second highest number of road deaths at 10 lives lost, followed by Burnett with nine.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the unnecessary loss of life needed to stop.

“These horrific statistics reinforce the sobering fact Queenslanders are being killed at an alarmingly high rate,” Ms Ritchie said.

“Eighteen of the 20 electorates with the highest number of road fatalities are in regional areas.

“Regional roads are of-

ten over-represented in fatalities, with crashes more likely to happen at higher speeds.”

Ms Ritchie said the solution to improving Queensland’s horrific road toll was to ensure we had safer drivers on safer roads.

“We’re pleading with drivers to not get complacent and to take road safety into their own hands, as we know quieter regional roads can be deadly,” she said.

“Disobeying simple road rules like speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, being distracted or drink or drug driving dramatically increases your risk of a crash.

“We also need to leaders to focus investment on regional road funding.

The major roads in these regions are high speed, have single lanes in each direction, are undivided and typically have narrow shoulders with hazardous roadsides, making them more unforgiving in the

event of a crash.

“The Bruce Highway Upgrade Program, due to be delivered over the next 15 years, as well as low cost, high impact safety works packages on other roads under Federal and State Road Safety Programs, need to be accelerated.

“We need our leaders to deliver simple safety upgrades such as lane and shoulder widening, safety barriers, roadside hazard removal, overtaking lanes and rumble strips.”

New phone and seat belt detection cameras have now been installed at the lights near McDonalds in Mareeba.

Cameras installed at Mareeba lights THE traffic lights in Mareeba now have mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras installed on all four traffic lights following new mobile phone laws for drivers across Queensland.

Updated regulations mean that it is now illegal to have your device in your hand or anywhere else on your body,

including on your lap or under your leg, while driving, whether it is in use or not.

If caught by one of the cameras, a $1033 fine will be issued as well as four demerit points.

Motorists can still use their mobile phone if the vehicle is stationary to pay for goods and services, such as through

a drive through, to enter a carpark or present legal documents such as a driver's license or border pass to the police.

Open and P2 licence holders may also continue to utilise their phone in a cradle attached to the vehicle to accept phone calls but it is illegal to pass your phone to the passenger.

Funding for road safety OVER $170 million has been set aside to fast-track numerous road safety projects across the state including statewide rest areas and the Palmerston Highway from Innisfail to Ravenshoe. $2 million has been set aside for the Palmerston Highway to widen its shoulders and the installation of guardrails at highrisk areas.

This money comes out of the $174.7 million package containing almost 50 upgrades set to be completed in the next 12 months. $14 million from this package will be used for upgrades to roadside rest areas across Queensland.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Devel-

opment Barnaby Joyce said one life lost on Australian roads is one too many.

“Our government is committed to keeping our communities safe, while securing our economic recovery,” he said.

“The funding supports the fast roll-out of life-saving safety works on rural and regional roads.”

The Wolfe Brothers are set to perform at Savannah in the Round this October in Mareeba.

BY MICHAEL WARREN AS Australia’s country music event of the year nears one band certain to prove a crowd pleaser during October’s Savannah in the Round festival in Mareeba are the ever-popular duo The Wolfe Brothers.

Nick and Tom Wolfe got their break on reality tv show Australia’s Got Talent in 2012 and since then haven’t looked back as they’ve gone about

forging a successful career as a well-known country music outfit across the country.

Hailing from a background of four generations of farmers and musicians it was inevitable the brothers would pursue fulltime music careers.

Expansion possible for next Beef Open Day

BY SALLY TURLEY PRESIDENT of the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day, Nick Trompf of Tallangalook Shorthorns and Sanata Gertrudis said that following early discussions, their committee was seriously considering extending next year's event over 2 days to give visitors more time.

“With widespread buyer interest and indications of more studs looking to join in the future, there is a lot of merit in running the 2022 event over two days to make it easier for visitors to get around all the properties they have come to see,” Mr Trompf said.

“The majority of stud representatives reported excellent outcomes on the day. Sales were made on most properties, including Tallangalook, and significant orders were received for later in the year, or for next season's draft.

“What was also really pleasing was that, the clientele that did attend were mainly 'top quality' buyers. They were chasing superior genetics and were willing to pay for the best animals on the day,” he said.

Although impacted by a generally miserable day across the Tablelands, the third annual Better Beef Open Day was another successful event embraced by

stud breeders and customers alike last Sunday.

Maximising their opportunity to speak directly with vendors about their cattle in the "engine room" of their operation, potential clients travelled from around northern, central and western Queensland to see what the Tablelands had to offer.

Mo Pedersen of Fassifern Limousin and Droughtmaster Stud, Tarzali, spoke for many vendors when he observed that while 2021 visitor numbers were down on the previous two years, those that did come were "on a mission" and he did make sales on the day.

“Our first car load arrived at 8.20am and the last at 4.50pm and the longest we were without visitors during the day, was only 10 minutes. We had people from as far south as Beaudesert and west to Forsayth and Georgetown,” Mr Pedersen said.

“We have got better at setting up in the wet for the wet and while it would be great to be able to stage the event on a dry day, what time of year could you guarantee a dry day on the Tablelands? None,” he said.

Unfortunately it did prove a bit too wet for one participant.

After inches of rain in the lead up to the day, Peter Bauer of Warrina Droughtmasters chose to "pull the pin" on this year's event

saying, "I didn't want to spend the day towing visitors' bogged cars out of my driveway, so I made the most of it by jumping in the car and visiting other studs in the area.”

Kellie Williams of Kel-Lee Droughtmaster Stud, Upper Barron reported seeing a lot of new faces this year.

"We were inundated by buyers after the Malanda show, so all my cattle were already sold, but after seeing the cattle I had on display, a lot of buyers are coming back at the end of the year to have another look at bulls and heifers,” she said.

After selling seven bulls and 40 heifers last year, Gordon Rasmussen of the established Euluma Droughtmaster Stud, Julatten, reported a quieter day this year.

“Normally a contingent of visitors make a beeline for my place and work their way back,” he said.

“Distance may be a factor, so next year I am considering taking my cattle to the Mareeba saleyards to showcase them there for buyers. As well as my bulls, I had 22 'ready to mate' heifers, 40 younger heifers and three bullocks, displaying the finished product, for buyer perusal,” Mr Rasmussen said.

Millstream Springs Brangus stud principal Mandie Scott ex-

perienced a very busy day, with over 100 people coming through.

“There was huge interest in our Speckled Park cattle this year, we could have sold 20 bulls on the day and several western buyers want to be kept informed and plan to come back as soon as we have something available,” she said.

“Our first visitors helped us set up the coffee area at 8am and it didn't quieten down until after 4pm. We sold the mob of Brangus steers we had on display and had a Mackay couple who want to come back and buy bulls next year. As a relatively new stud, it was great to get so much positive feedback that we are on track for what the industry wants,” she said.

Thank you for your kindness Mareeba mechanic I WOULD like to share with your readers the kindness shown to my family by a stranger who lives in your city.

On Sunday the August 15, we were staying at Granite Gorge and enjoying such a wonderful experience when my husband found that our granddaughter’s vehicle was missing one of two bolts from the undercarriage near one of her tyres.

She had been complaining of shuddering on braking.

My husband and granddaughter went into Mareeba to try to obtain a bolt to fix the vehicle, but they were on their way back to Granite Gorge without one when my husband saw a mechanic fixing a forklift in the front grounds of a business.

My husband took the bolt into the business asking if they might know where he could obtain one.

The person at desk advised my husband to speak with the mechanic who was working outside.

My husband approached this mechanic and told him the story of the missing bolt.

The mechanic said to my husband; “Mate, I will be working on this till 9pm but I think I have some of those bolts at my workshop. It is 17klms form here.”

The mechanic gave my husband his address and then he said, "You will be able to access it with these two keys.

One for the gate to enter the property and the other for the door of the shed." And just like that, the mechanic from Mareeba gave to a complete stranger the keys to his property and his shed.

My husband told me that the mechanic looked into his eyes, and he had looked into the mechanics’ eyes and that they knew they trusted each other.

Brotherhood of mechanics – my husband was wearing his old mechanic overalls.

I told my husband that it was the love of God that prompted the mechanic to give him the keys, realising his desperate need for the bolt.

My husband and our granddaughter went to the mechanic's shed and looked in a bucket of bolts, found the one they needed, locked up the shed and the property and returned the keys to the mechanic.

My husband offered him money which he declined. So dear Mareeba mechanic thank you for your kindness to a complete stranger.

Your actions on Sunday really saved the day for us and we all ask that you be blessed as you blessed us.

I was praying that a bolt would be provided by the Lord, and it was through you it was given.

This Word of God sums up this blessing; “My God will meet all your needs according to His Glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”

Barron River bridge debacle continues I HAVE followed with interest the progress

of the $2.1 million investigation into the failing bridge at Kuranda, to hear the head of TMR in Cairns this week claim that bridges built now days were at the end of their useful life at 50 years.

I am astounded that he would think we as the taxpayers of Queensland would buy that and think we had received value for money with the present structure failing after only 58 years.

I would suggest we had a huge failure in design, construction and forward planning that this most important link in our North Queensland strategy as arrived at this sorry state after such a short service life.

Should we be asking has maintenance been neglected or been short cut over the bridges lifetime or maybe the maintenance budget has either been too small or used on other more pressing jobs.

Some examples of bridges close to home that should be past there use by date according to the TMR spokesperson, the Sydney Harbour bridge opened 1932 carrying road and rail transport daily 150,000 vehicles their annual maintenance budget is $5,000,0000.

The Story Bridge Brisbane opened 1940 carrying just 1000,000 every day, jump across the Tasman to Auckland, NZ their harbour bridge was opened in 1959 and 10 years later in 1969 had to add what the New Zealanders affectionately call the Nippon Clip On added 2 additional lanes in either direction carrying 170,000 vehicles daily.

Jump to the other side of the Pacific Ocean the Golden Gate Bridge opened 1937 carrying 112,000 vehicles daily, then if we like to go to London’s Tower Bridge opened in 1894 carrying a very modest 40,000 vehicles a day.

There are much older bridges in the UK the Union Chain bridge between England and Scotland dates back to 1820 though now days it is a pedestrian bridge only, take a short trip over to Poland.

If you go to Gliwice and there you will find a suspension bridge dating back to 1734, then take a trip around Europe and look at the bridges and aqueducts that the Romans built during the height their rise power.

1st to the 4th and find what is still standing and in many cases still in use, of course the one thing they all have in common is continual maintenance.

So, what we have here in the case of the Baron river Bridge at Kuranda is a show of no forward planning probably poor maintenance and general incompetence the $ 2.1 million should have been put into the solution and not the band aide temporary fix we are now getting.

What chance have we as QLD taxpayers of changing the outcome?

Kennedy electorate keeps missing out THE local Transport and Main Roads Department is another Queensland Department failure.

TMR knew the Kuranda Barron River Bridge needed upgrading six years ago.

Kennedy Highway is vital to supporting all Tableland residents as well as primary

and secondary industries.

This highway is vital to Cape York regions.

Local members, Pitt, Healy, Crawford, Lui and Knuth have all let their constituents down, not to mention Mark Bailey, TMR Minister. Where is he in this mess?

When will people wake up that Labor has let the Far northern region degenerate since their election to office in December 1989?

For all but five years Labor has been in government in Queensland to the far north’s detriment.

Federal Member, Bob Katter, has also let constituents down. Having been in parliament for 47 years, he knows the ropes well.

He let a grand opportunity pass him by when he didn’t use his Balance of power in the 2011 Gillard government. Kennedy electorate missed out hugely in that term of parliament.

Mr Katter could have pushed for the reclassifying of the Kennedy Highway as a national Highway as suggested by Advance Cairns CEO Dr Paul Sparshott. Warren Entsch and he could have worked together.

Instead our Kennedy member spent much of that term travelling Australia on taxpayers’ money forming his Katter Party.

This bridge needs fixing more than urgently.

Local not happy with Government OUR federal health department says the majority of Covid deaths are people in their 70s or older, and that there’s been 967 Covid deaths since January, 20202.

Excluding the 800 dead from Victoria’s disastrous air-conditioned high-rise hotel quarantine3, we’ve had 167 Covid deaths in 18 months.

However, in the first three months of the Covid vaccination campaign we’ve seen 183 deaths from vaccine reactions.

Worse, TGA data shows vaccine deaths are occurring in younger age groups than those most susceptible to death from Covid.

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency regulates our medicos and has banned them from stating any concerns about vaccine safety.

In effect, our governments are coercing us into vaccines that have killed more Aussies at a younger age than the disease they’re supposed to prevent.

There are TGA-approved drugs on the market now that cure Covid, a fact wellknown to many Australian doctors.

Our governments’ obsession with reaching “x-percent vaccinated,” using experimental drugs with improperly-applied emergency-use approval, looks like a plan to harm rather than help.

If only we had a large network of researchers across Australia who had the ability to find these facts and report them to everyone, many lives could be saved.

With Mareeba Men’s Shed THERE’S been plenty of community involvement for Mareeba Mens Shed members over the past month.

In addition to our regular clubhouse sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8am to noon, Mareeba Mens Shed has also been out and about supporting the community at two well attended events last month, Mareeba Rodeo and of course the ever popular Christmas in July event at Davies Park.

As well, following an Australia wide agreement involving St John’s Ambulance Service and Mens Shed Australia, Mareeba Men’s Shed members have made and installed a cabinet to enclose an AED or defibrillator unit that is now available at Mareeba Office Centre.

Research shows survival rates of up to 70% can be achieved if an AED is on hand. The St John G5 and G3 Elite AEDs are simple, effective and ready for the rescue.

Having this vital emergency equipment available in our community is a great advantage because there is the potential there to actually save lives and even shorten treatment periods, so it’s yet another project that has our full support Don’t forget Mareeba Mens Shed will be supporting the annual Mareeba Multicultural Festival later this month at our Dinky Di9 Aussie Hot Pie stall, so an open invitation is extended to all pieologists to give it a go and get yourselves a pie

or two.

Mareeba Mens Shed is about providing a friendly place for participants to attend and our members have the opportunity to improve their lifestyle and to learn new skills and also to get involved with our community by way of the work we do.

How much each member becomes involved is really up to each individual member where they go and what they do.

Some might want to develop new skills, some might get involved heavily and others might just want to come along for a cuppa and a chin wag.

This month’s info session will involve a team from our Mareeba based staff from Queensland Fire and Rescue.

So fire safety and prevention and other emergency events will be covered at Mareeba Men’s Shed at the right hand end of Lloyd Street on the right near the river, tomorrow (Thursday, August 26) from 10am.

Mareeba local Alyssa Shorey has realised a childhood dream being picked in the Northern Rays netball side as they prep for the upcoming Nissan State Titles in September.

Shorey’s dreams realised LOCAL Mareeba girl and avid netballer Alyssa Shorey has leaped above and beyond with her recent selection in the Northern Rays (North) side set to play in the upcoming Nissan State Titles.

The titles are set to be held at the end of September and will encompass the entirety of Queensland with players coming from across the state to compete in Brisbane.

Alyssa is playing in one of three different Rays teams with their being a central and south team as well all comprising players from across Queensland.

Starting when she was eight years old Alyssa, now 16, al-

ways dreamed of being picked in a side like the rays and now that dream has been realised.

“It was always an option when I started I knew the rays were like the top guns,” she said.

“I never really thought I would play with them, but I started being in development teams and thinking maybe one day.

“It doesn’t really feel like it’s real at the moment, I don’t think it has really sunken in yet.”

Alyssa will join her north Northern Rays teammates in Brisbane as they attempt to tackle the Nissan State Titles from September 19 to 21.

UP and coming sportsman were recognised recently as Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has recognised Travis Wadley and Keanu BowenWilson as the recipients of their 2021 sports bursary.

The bursary is offered early, seeking to recognise two students in the region who are competing at state, national and/or international levels, using their experiences to help develop sport in the local com-

munity.

The bursaries are valued at $650 and aim to assist the recipients with the associated costs of competing and developing their sporting skills.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti said it was an honour to present Travis and Keanu with their bursaries and congratulate them on their success.

“Keanu is the Malanda State High School captain and is passionate about sports par-

ticularly rugby league, touch football and athletics,” Mayor Marti said.

“He has excelled at these sports at regional and state levels and is currently playing with the Northern Pride U18 side in the Auswide Mal Meninga Cup.” Mayor Marti was as equally impressed with Travis’s dedication to sailing with him often competing in national titles in the south of Australia.

“Travis has been sailing since he was six and has received numerous state national and international titles,” he said.

“He is a qualified sailing instructor and is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and supporting others to improve their sailing skills.”

The applications for the 2022 Sports Bursary open in January of 2022.

SPORT Riding on for cardiac care

The quick release of Buckets powerforward Kyll Wright catches the Red Devils off guard.

Brothers Nick and Peter Lyngcoln will be taking on the 2021 QSuper Cardiac Challenge in support of their late mother, raising money for cardiac services in the far north.

TWO brothers will be tackling a grueling 333km cycle in September as they participate in the 14th annual QSuper Cardiac Challenge, all in their mother’s memory.

The annual QSuper Cardiac Challenge will begin on September 25 as teams of cyclist’s tackle long journey from Cairns to Cooktown ending on September 27.

Brothers Nick and Peter Lyngcoln will be taking on the challenge with the support of friends and their brother Daniel under the banner, Annie’s

Army.

Annie Lyngcoln spent some time in the Cairns Cardiac Unit receiving care before she tragically passed away in 2017.

Peter said the exceptional support and care Annie received during her time in hospital motivates him and his brother to participate in the challenge each year.

“The reason why this year is our fourth taking part in the challenge is that our values are so aligned,” he said.

“We know all of the funds

we raise go directly to improving cardiac care facilities… the initial driver for us was the healthcare workers who were there 24/7 helping Mum. “The facilities and care that they provided got her to the point where she almost pulled through and for that extra time, we are forever grateful.”

The total of this years fundraising money will be going towards a ventilator for cardiology, a lung function testing system and an endobronchial ultrasound system for respiratory care.

The biggest race event on Mareeba’s calendar is closing in with the Mareeba Annuals now only a week away.

Buckets boil devils troubled and toil THE Red Devils have featured prominently in the Mareeba basketball finals and were expected to douse a Buckets talent pool during the recent regular season game, but the Buckets had intentions of their own.

An opening half found Ricaydan Wason and Brennan Collis causing endless trouble for the aging Devils line-up.

The absence of Luke Fresta and Zac Mryteza exaggerating the aging legs of the Devils and it seemed the Buckets would be clear winners, 40 to 19 points at half-time.

Then in a Shakespearean quill inked a turn of fate, the Devils’ captain Craig Farley took matters into his own hands.

Farley tagged Buckets’ big man Brennan Collis suffocating

his every movement at each opportunity.

Nearby Devils rallied to the cause and Collis was held firm eventually screaming for help.

Experienced referees, Warren Thomson and Brendan Ebner, showcased their deafness until an unsportsman like foul was called on Collis by Thomson, and Ebner dished out a technical foul for some rough language at the fray.

Farley sparingly squirrelled his fouls, whereas Collis had reached his quota, the departure of Collis flagged a fourth quarter feast for the Devils, and they came thundering home.

Nevertheless, the Buckets players were impressive, they looked like a galvanised team, sharing the pill, scrambling, and

hanging in there until the end, Buckets 69 Red Devils 65 at the close.

In the earlier game, an understrength Stingrays came home late to squash an increasingly social squad in Ballers. Ballers seem intent on making this a three-team contest come finals.

Ballers did receive a tough call on the buzzer, where Chris Moloney missed out on a Swiss army knife of flailing arms and fouls on his way to the basket.

The Ballers should have put the game to bed by half-time having the advantage of a bench, whilst Rays had four fit players propped up by a returning and underdone Ted Bear. Final score 86 to 84 in favour of the Stingrays.

Annuals round for Mareeba MAREEBA’S biggest race of the year is just around the corner as the Mareeba Annuals are set to be held next Saturday, September 4.

In what has been a jampacked year of racing for the Mareeba Turf Club patrons have been inundated with choices for race days with Mareeba picking up numerous meets from other clubs.

Next Saturday however is the mother of all races in Mareeba and the one marked down on everyone’s calendar.

There will be live music, fashions on the field, kids’ entertainment and of course lots and lots of racing with a five-day card scheduled for the day.

Mareeba Turf Club president Alex Malliff said that the annuals are the biggest race on Mareeba’s calendar, and he is looking forward to people coming out to enjoy the day.

“Everything is just a little bit bigger, there are more chairs and tables to set out and more grog to order,” he said.

THE Grand Finals of the 2021 Eacham Junior Rugby League competition are to be played this Saturday at the Atherton JRL Grounds on Golf Links Road.

This year Eacham has competed for the first time under the newly formed FNQ Rugby League structure along with the Cairns and Innisfail junior bodies. On Saturday, all four clubs from the local Eacham league will play in lower grades be-

fore the under 14 and under 16 deciders later in the day.

Atherton and Malanda play in the under 14 grand final while Atherton and Herberton play for the under 16 title. Many of the under 16’s will play their final games as juniors on Saturday before moving through to the senior under 18’s next year.

Following a shortened season last year due to COVID restrictions the league has enjoyed a full season

in 2021.

The Eacham JRL was established in 1969 with teams from Atherton, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Mareeba and Mossman playing.

Now 52 years later there are four clubs competing – Atherton Roosters (red, white and blue), Herberton Magpies (black and white), Malanda Eels (blue and gold), Ravenshoe Tigers (orange and black).

Many local players like Herber-

ton’s Dallas Johnson started their rugby league careers at Eacham before going through to play at the highest level.

Dallas Johnson won NRL premierships with the Melbourne Storm while also representing Queensland State of Origin and Australia.
