INSPIRED by her granddaughter, one Mareeba grandmother has used her talent and passion for crocheting to provide love and care to young kids in hospital in the form of cute, cuddly, little teddy bears.

After her granddaughter, Lacey underwent surgery in July 2020, she returned home to the family farm with a little teddy under her arm.

Hit by a stroke of brilliance

and some encouragement from her husband, Lorella began making small woollen teddies for children to enjoy while in hospital.

Lorella has made nearly 100 teddies, donating them to the Brisbane Children’s Hospital and last fortnight to the Cairns Base Hospital when Gia Smith of Mareeba rang Bayley’s Bell celebrating the end of her Chemotherapy.

What started as a small gesture has grown into a passion for putting smiles on little faces and little teddies in little arms, all signed from Nonna Lorella.

Lorella has also included a card with each bear which says ‘this little teddy bear is a gift to let you know you are special and very brave’.

“I enjoy making them and I sign them as Nonna Lorella, I’m Nonna to everybody,” Lorella

said.

“I’m going to continue making these teddies, it’s all in my own time and I enjoy it.

“It’ll make the kids happy, and that makes me happy.”

Lorella has already received a letter of thanks from the Brisbane Children’s Hospital telling her how thankful they are and how much the kids enjoy their teddies.

COVID vaccine rolls out on Tablelands Atherton Nurse Janet Stonadge administered the first COVID vaccine shot to Yungaburra and Malanda Community nurse Rachel Bernays on Friday.

ATHERTON Hospital began rolling out the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine last Friday to front line staff.

Between 30 and 40 staff were expected to get the vaccination on the first day, with hospital staff expecting to be able to vaccinate up to 100 people per day once the system has been fully rolled out.

The first people to be vaccinated was Atherton Hospital clinical nurse consultant Rachel Bernays and medical superintendent Dr Craig Fairley.

It’s expected that GPs in Atherton will start receiving the COVID vaccine from the Monday, April 5.

Tracey Morgan, Executive Director Rural and Remote Services, said the vaccine would be rolled out to frontline health workers in Innisfail, Mossman, and Mareeba hospitals over the next few weeks.

“Throughout the vaccination rollout, we will be offering vaccination to both health care staff and community members at each remote location,” Ms Morgan said.

“We’ve got our processes and systems ready for this vaccine, and our staff will be lining up for the vaccination and showing leadership for their communities to follow suit.”

“It looked like a good contract until the builder went broke and now I’m locked into the work with my house backing my overdraft.”

She said the vaccine would be delivered by trained immunisation teams at each site.

“This is the start of phase One-B and we will initially be looking at the elderly and the venerable as well as our staff and front-line workers.”

Yungaburra and Malanda Community nurse Rachel Bernays said she excited to be the first person vac-

cinated on the Tablelands.

“I’m really pleased that the rollout is finally happening on the Tablelands,” she said.

“I have had lots of enquires from patients over the past few weeks who are keen to get the vaccination.

“I’m a community nurse and an immunisation nurse and I’m happy to be getting the vaccine so that my family are also protected.”

Atherton Hospital Acting Director of Nursing, Kelly Pollock said that the rollout of the vaccine was important for the protection of all Australians.

“Worldwide, we have seen firsthand how much of a difference vaccination against infectious diseases can make to keeping people safe and healthy,’’ she said.

“The COVID vaccine is free, safe, effective and is an important step to take to reduce the serious effects of COVID in people who become infected with the virus.

“Immunisation not only protects your own family, but also others by helping to control serious diseases in our community.

“It is important to continue to protect yourself and other by washing your hands often, practicing physical distancing, staying home if you are sick and getting tested if you have any symptoms.”

Organised by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), Earth Hour began on March 31, 2007 and saw people from over 7,000 cities turn of their power for 60 minutes.

Although the event won’t make an immediate impact on climate change, it is a symbolic moment where everyone turns off in recognition of action against climate change.

Ergon Energy said that the highest consumption of electricity was 404.6 Megawatts (MW) on February 21, 2019 at 7.21pm in Far North Queensland.

Compared to using an air-conditioning system which uses only 3,500 watts per hour, it shows the intensity of the amount of energy being used in a short time.

During the summer months, Ergon Energy spokeswoman Emma Oliveri said that air-conditioning has increased energy demands, leading to excessive power usage.

“Between 40% and 50% of network peak load at this time of year can be attributed to air-conditioning use,” she said.

“Peak demand typically occurs in the evening when people are switching on appliances like aircons, ovens, hot water, televisions, computers, washing machines and lights.”

“DES seeks Council's views on the proposed entry.”

Last Wednesday MSC councillors voted unanimously to agree with the officer’s recommendation which was; “To offer no objection to the application to enter the Mareeba Uniting Church building on Lots 5 and 6 at 189 Walsh Street, Mareeba, in the Queensland Heritage Register, subject to the owners not objecting,” This means the church is now one step closer to being heritage listed, whereas the adjoining house, church hall and reserve will not be heritage listed.

The Australian Institute of Architects made the submission to the DES to heritage list the church as it was designed be

internationally renowned Cairns Architect Eddie Oribin.

Queensland President of the Australian Institute of Architects Dr Michael Lavery said that Mr Oribin was an innovative architect and that his innovation stretched across structure and details in terms of dealing with the local climate.

“His buildings were beautifully detailed and always well built, Eddie Oribin brought some of the best work out to the regional areas,” he said.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said she would support any move to have the building protected, but there were no plans for the council to buy the property.

“It is a beautiful building, but It's unfair to expect the ratepayer to purchase this site,” Cr Toppin said.

“We are a small council, but

we are very keen to see that the right buyer purchases this iconic piece of architecture.”

According to a Department of Environment and Science spokesperson, “The public submission period for the application closes on March 26, 2021,” they said.

“The Department of Environment and Science will then make its heritage recommendation on the application and submissions will be published on the Queensland Government website.”

The Uniting Church said in a statement that the decision to close the church and sell the land and adjoining buildings was prompted by several factors, including the expansion of a nearby roundabout, noise and changes in gatherings due to COVID.

Business women disband club IN a regrettable decision the Mareeba Business Women’s Club (MBWC) has been forced to disband due to a lack of interest and low number of members.

The MBWC has been supporting the Mareeba community for several years after reforming in 2017, including sponsoring the Mareeba Rodeo Queen competition.

After a meeting in late February this year, the MBWC was barely able to fill the committee with some members doubling up on rolls.

This was a clear sign to MBWC President Deborah Boardman that the club was dying and could not sustain itself

any longer.

The lingering effects of COVID and the newfound strain on the business women of Mareeba spelt the downfall of the club.

“We, as a group of working women, realised that all of this is most likely why MBWC had to close its doors,” she said.

“We are too busy to attend meetings and to commit to just about anything, just in case there was another drastic change that might appear.”

With this in mind the decision was made to officially disband their club after a special meeting on March 15.

The WBWC is well known

for their luncheons and support given towards the community, an honour they will continue until their last cent.

Now being disbanded, the assets of the club will be cleared and all remaining funds will be donated to local charities.

“Maybe when there is some normality another committee may start another club that will be just as valuable as this one,” Mrs Boardman said.

“It was a great club with a lot of memories, many of wonderful events, speakers and interesting meetings.

“I wish everyone well in the business world and in your personal life.”

New bridge on the cards

TMR have announced that the Barron River Bridge will be kept to one lane for the foreseeable future.

THE Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have confirmed that they are launching an investigation into either replacing or rehabilitating the Barron River Bridge on the Kennedy Highway at Kuranda.

In the meantime, urgent repair works are being carried out after faults were discovered in steel welds. TMR announced that traffic control would remain in place for at least another six months on the 60-year

old bridge, meaning that the bridge will remain at one lane for the foreseeable future.

While the maintenance is underway, the Queensland Government will start a $2.1 million investigation into longterm solutions for either replacing or rehabilitating the ageing bridge.

Transport and Main Roads North Queensland Regional Director Sanjay Ram said the investigation will assess the

best long-term solution to providing a safe, reliable crossing of the Barron River.

“We apologise for the ongoing inconvenience of those delays around the bridge, but the safety of all road users is the absolute priority that guides our decisions on these matters,” Mr Ram said.

Mr Ram said current traffic arrangements ensured the bridge was safe for all vehicles under 50.5 tonnes.

“In late October 2020, routine inspections identified fatigue in some steel elements," he said.

“These issues have been caused by the accumulated impacts of heavy vehicles crossing the river over many years.

“Heavy vehicles are now much heavier than they were in the early 1960s when the bridge was designed and built.

“Wear and tear like we’ve picked up is not unusual in steel bridges of this age and can be managed. “Our bridge inspectors are continuing bridge investigations to make repairs.

“They’re checking 1000 individual welds and repairing them as they go.

Mr Ram said to date, about 300 welds have been inspected, with around half of those identified for repair. "The average delay through the site is about two minutes with the traffic management in place,” he said.

“We’d prefer we didn’t have to reduce traffic over the bridge but that’s not an option based on the work we need to complete, so we thank the community and the motorists who drive through this area for their patience as we continue these repairs.”

Upgrade of parks begins MAREEBA Shire Council has put shovel to dirt commencing works across the shire after hearing from what locals want in their parks and open spaces..

Late last year, Council released a survey for residents to identify public areas across the Shire that needed improvements.

Now with the results in, Council has set about work with repairs, maintenance and even new construction projects.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said close to 500 responses were submitted and council has already taken a proactive approach as the survey results are unpacked.

“Thank you to everyone who took the time to give council feedback regarding the use of parks and open spaces across our shire,” she said.

“A detailed analysis of the

survey results is underway, council has already identified opportunities to enhance our parks and open spaces.

“These works are underway, which is exciting to see.”

Projects currently undergoing include an undercover play area at Centenary Park including new playground equipment, the replacement of outdoor gym equipment at Mary Andrews Park in Mareeba and solar lighting at the Bicentennial Lakes.

Mayor Toppin said at first glance the top five priorities identified from the survey were playgrounds, picnic tables and BBQ areas, toilet amenities, rubbish bins and tree and nature.

“We really want to look at the bigger picture and have a strategic vision going forward,” she said.

“Our vision is to make the

“This will make them more user friendly and cater for the needs of the residents and community groups.”

Kuranda will also be undergoing improvements as the Barron Falls walking trails project and the Jum Rum walking trail upgrade are both nearing completion.

These projects have been identified and are being worked on in the short term, one of the long-term projects brought up by the survey was the construction of a walking track near the Amaroo estate.

This project will be looked at in the future after the detailed analysis has been conducted and in the strategic plan for the next several years.

Doctors on life support ANOTHER medical pandemic is plaguing communities and residents across Queensland in the form of a doctors’ shortage, resulting in some private clinics forced to shut their doors.

More and more private clinics have been forced to close as the doctor shortage worsens.

New and old doctors are joing a mass exodus and relocating to metropolitan centres.

The Mareeba Medical Clinic is one of the lucky ones having three long-term doctors to see to the community’s needs.

One of the resident longterm doctors working at the Mareeba Medical Clinic, Dr Grant Manypenny, owns the business with his wife Merril.

Since their many years of

working and subsequent ownership of the clinic Merril has always been able to secure doctors currently engaged in vocational training program called General Practitioner (GP) registrars.

“We’ve been dependent on one or two registrars’ but at the moment there are less registrar’s, so we only have one at the moment,” Merril said.

“There absolutely is a need for more doctors, we currently have two empty consultant rooms.

“We just can’t get doctors to fill the rooms.”

Amaroo Medical in Mareeba is registered as a training clinic for GP Registrars, meaning they get a higher influx of training

doctors than most clinics.

Even though they are a preferred clinic for training, Amaroo is currently training less registrars than they normally would.

“The numbers at the training organisations are down, meaning they have less registrars to give to practices,” she said.

“This creates a potential war over recruitment once the registrars have graduated.

“Ideally we would like to recruit another full-time resident.”

With plummeting doctor numbers and an increased frequency in doctor visits, the waiting times for non-emergency visits only climbs up as some patients may be waiting nearly two weeks for an appointment.

Some of the new equipment includes: An Olympus camera head for laparoscopic procedures in theatre, Sara Plus – a powered standing and raising aid for mobilising and rehabilitation, an Electrocardiogram to measure cardiac abnormalities in the Emergency Department and blood warmers to warm blood during or prior to delivery to patients.

Atherton Friends of the Foundation President Di Williams said many people who live in the Atherton area were born at the Atherton Hospital and their grandchildren were also born there.

Covid restrictions see rodeo called off ONE of the biggest events on the Mareeba calendar has been cancelled for the second time in two years due to COVID. The Mareeba Rodeo Association announced last week that the annual event will not go ahead in 2021 due to COVID restrictions and an increase in related costs.

The decision was made last week with President of the Mareeba Rodeo Association Peter Brown saying it did not make financial sense to run the rodeo this year.

“Due to COVID and all the new restrictions that have been put in place by the Queensland

Government we can’t put on a socially safe event and still run at a profit,” he said.

“It will be impossible for us to impose 1.5 metre social distancing.

“We were also advised that we would not be able do our parade in town.”

Mr Brown said there were now extra costs involved due to COVID. “We would normally get about 14,000 people through the gate, but as part of the new seating plans, we could only have between 4000 and 6000 people,” he said.

Cr Bensted said in light of COVID-19 restrictions, the event was cancelled in 2020, and the committee was determined to keep the spirit of the race alive.

“The team has worked tirelessly to organise the event, however we need to be realistic and look at our costings and benefit to the community,” Cr Bensted said.

“The committee understands it is a massive commitment to organise a team, bus, fundraise so we want to give everyone as much notice as possible.

Mr Brown said that Great Northern Bull ride was still coming to Mareeba, but numbers would have to be restricted as well.

“It will be capped at 1500 people but that will need to include volunteers and competitors as well,” he said.

THE Great Wheelbarrow Race organising committee is encouraging teams to nominate for this year’s event sooner rather than later to ensure the event goes ahead.

Committee Chair, Councillor Locky Bensted said the event is in jeopardy and all the cards are on the table.

“We have been working very hard behind the scenes to put this event together and keep the spirit of the race alive, however we need nominations,” Cr Bensted said.

“We have navigated our way through the COVID requirements and we are confident the event can proceed in a COVID-safe way.

“At this stage, COVID will not stop us from hosting the event however, a lack of nominations may mean the event has to be called off.”

Cr Bensted said the Council has been very supportive and is hopeful the event goes ahead however it may not be feasible to host the one-day event with the funds available.

Moyamoya Australia's win injects life into Far North’s calender

BY SALLY TURLEY EXCITEMENT was in the air last weekend as The Express approached a group of locals, who were celebrating their selection to participate in a global television show, later this year.

Being on the show will give them an amazing opportunity to work together to promote and raise money for a cause they are totally invested in, while participating in the adventure of a lifetime.

Since getting their Moyamoya Australia charity up and running last year, Nicola Sparkles Baker and her team have been a powerhouse organisation, delivering a wide range of original events that have added much to the social landscape of North Queensland. They may have a very serious focus for their group, but they make sure everyone has a lot of fun along the way.

First there was the Great Blue Pigeon Race, last September, where punters registered their pigeon for $20/hd and more than 30 feathered contestants were taken to Babinda where they were released to fly back to Cairns.

This event was soon followed by the Smokey Blue Rally on October 3. The rally commenced Saturday morning and involved contestants checking in to locations at towns

throughout the Tablelands on their way to the Undara Experience near Mt Surprise all in time for a night of live entertainment followed by a recovery party the next morning.

Moyamoya disease is a rare blood vessel (vascular) disorder in which the carotid artery in the skull becomes blocked or narrowed, reducing blood flow to the brain.

Tiny blood vessels then open up at the base of the brain in an attempt to supply the brain with blood. The condition may cause mini strokes or bleeding in the brain. It can also affect how well the patient's brain functions and can cause cognitive and developmental delays or disabilities.

Nicola Sparkles Baker's son Jed experienced these exact symptoms and after waiting over three years for a diagnosis, they found out he was one of the one in a million Australians to contract Moyamoya.

By the age of 14, Jed had undergone surgery to all four quadrants of his brain and there was nothing more the Cairns hospital could do for him.

In a bid to raise the profile of this disease, Nicola applied in late 2020, for her team of 14 to be on the Charity TV Global Show, the Adventure All Stars, where entertainment is combined with philanthropy.

They got through the initial 600 Australian and New Zea-

land applicants into the top 30 and received their casting call in January.

Thrilled with the news of their selection, Ms Baker said winning was only the beginning of the challenge.

Her group now have until December 27 to raise $1,000 each per person per month to qualify for the prize of being flown to a secret location and filming 6 adventure-filled days as a reward for all their hard work.

“The most important thing is that we all make the effort and get to the finish line together.

The team will be flown on the same plane to an exciting location and will be taken bungee jumping, sailing and 4 wheel motorbike riding, and to wineries and race tracks, and to experience whatever that location specialises in,” Ms Baker said.

The project will be a huge win/win for all involved. Charity TV Global get their television show which they will show in 26 Asian countries and all net profits are gifted to their charity partners, meaning Moyamoya will get up to $50,000 profit off the top, to put back into their cause.

ball, but our longer term goal is to get cash into the pockets of those who need it by offering cash grants to families affected by the disease,” Ms Baker said.

The group have been using the excitement of their win to stimulate a massive brainstorming session for fundraising ideas and the list of events planned is impressive.

Headlining is the inaugural Blue Tie Ball to be held at the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino in Cairns on Saturday, May 8th.

Other exciting events the group are planning to deliver include a winter music and wine festival, the Bendigo bank sponsored Teddy Bears' Picnic to sync with the opening of the Malanda pump bike track in late June and a Karma keg event at Palm Cove on Jed's birthday weekend in October, where they will sell donated beer to the

public for whatever they want to pay for it.

The Great Blue Pigeon Race and the Smokey Blue Rally will run again, as well as Easter raffles and a motorbike ride from Cairns culminating in breakfast on the Tablelands.

Meanwhile Nicola has been working on building a massive, 180cm fibreglass, blue brain which members and supporters will push from Smithfield to Cairns on September 18 at the end of disability week and which will feature at all the local shows and festivals.

As awareness grows, Nicola said neurosurgeons have begun putting newly diagnosed patients in contact with Moyamoya Australia for information and support.

Wet Tropics in decline

A WARNING bell has been sounded as Australian scientists caution that important ecosystems like the wet tropics rainforest and Great Barrier Reef are on the verge of collapse.

The stark reminder comes as part of a collective report compiled by 38 scientists from differing Australian universities and government agencies.

The Global Change Biology report documented the collapse of 19 Australian ecosystems from coral reefs, deserts, river systems, tropical savannas and even our wet tropics rainforests.

Professor Euan Ritchie from Deakin University who worked on the report, said that there has been major environmental deg-

radation in parts of Queensland tropical rainforests.

“Queensland’s wet tropics rainforests are a biodiversity hotspot, many of the species in this region are found nowhere else on Earth,” he said.

The report points out that within the wet tropics the populations of many native rainforest species are in decline.

“Unique species like lemuroid ringtail possums were once common but are now increasingly rare and facing extinction,” Professor Ritchie said.

“Studies have documented species moving to higher elevations as temperature increases, but eventually they reach the

top with increasingly small amounts of habitat available and nowhere else to go.”

These claims are further supported by local environmental group, the Wet Tropics Management Authority (WTMA).

WTMA’s mission is to protect, conserve, present, rehabilitate and pass on the World Heritage Area for future generations, the wet tropics rainforest, is part of this mission.

Director of Executive WTMA Scott Buchanan has observed the decline of the wet tropics and its native plant and wildlife.

“Historically the wet tropics ecosystem has been altered by human activity and more recently the cumulative impacts of climate change are becoming more evident,” he said.

“Reduction and fragmenting of habitats results in ‘islands’ forming that limit populations of different species to small areas, climate change is seeing a warming of the wet tropics region as well as stressing habitats.

“These variations can change aspects of the Area’s composition that can result in local extinctions of certain species.”

Professor Steve Williams from James Cook University has been researching the iconic, endemic rainforest ringtail possums of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area for over two decades.

These rare possums are primarily restricted to the higher elevations across the Wet Tropics and models suggest that they could face extinction by the end

Memorable QCWA Aleda members honoured loses locks for a cause THE grounds of the Dimbulah Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) hall were filled to the brim as they hosted a Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony, honouring two outstanding ladies and their memories.

The ceremony took place last Saturday, March 20 for Maria Dalla Lana and Maria Murador who were stalwart members of the Dimbulah QCWA for many years.

Both Mrs Dalla Lana and Mrs Murador have recently passed away, however their passion and drive remains imbedded within the Dimbulah QCWA and broader community.

They would participate in events, fundraise, and make sure that no one left one of their events without first buying a ticket for their many raffles.

Mrs Dalla Lana and Mrs Murador held over 50 years of experience volunteering for the QCWA between them and several committee positions over 12 years.

The families of both Mrs Dalla Lana and Mrs Murador were invited along to see the unveiling of the plaques and to plant the trees.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin was present on the day to unveil the plaque and say a few words in memory of the two ladies.

“Both ladies were stalwarts of the Dimbulah QCWA, they dedicated many hours towards this organisation,” she said.

“I cannot recall a time when I attended a community event in Dimbulah when these ladies were not fundraising for the

WHEN Aleda Day read about a charity that turns donated hair into wigs for people with medical conditions, she decided to cut her long locks and donate her hair.

“I read about people donating their hair for children with cancer and turning it into wigs, I needed a haircut anyway so I thought I would go with a much longer chop to help out,” Aleda said.

“My thought was why cut it and leave it on the floor? If I have all this hair and it can go to a good cause, why not.

“After some research I discovered they needed hair more than 30 centimetres in length and I also discovered the Desley at Mareeba Hairport did cuts for donated hair.”

Aleda said more than 30 centimetres was cut off and the reaction to her short new hair has been positive “Everyone has been great; a lot of people have been really supportive,” she said.

“The hair is then made into wigs for kids up to the age of 17 who suffer from Alopecia,” she said.

Originally Desley was asked if she could help donate hair for wigs for women with cancer and then she also started collecting hair for people with Alopecia.

“We have been collecting hair for about 12 years now,” Desley said.

For hair to be donated it must be over 30 centimetres in length and it also must be untreated or uncoloured. Desley said she doesn’t even need to ask customers as most people come in asking to do it.

“We have a lot of people who come in and ask if they can donate their hair,” she said.

“Some people come in and ask is my hair long enough yet

and if it isn’t, they go away and come back a few weeks later.”

Desley said she once cut a woman’s hair that was down past her bottom. “She got all it cut off into a short bob and we donated that hair,” she said.

“We also get men with long air who have specifically grown their hair long and then come into to donate it.

“It doesn’t matter if your male, female or a child, if you’re getting more than 30 centimetres cut, we can donate it for you.”

Emergency housing shortage THE Far North and Tablelands has seen an increase in the need for emergency, transitional and long-term housing with next to no housing available for struggling families.

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said the Tablelands and Cassowary Coast was in desperate need of emergency accommodation.

“Our office has been approached by a number of concerned organisations and struggling families regarding their troubles in getting accommodation,” Mr Knuth said.

“The need to provide emergency, transitional and longterm housing must be addressed immediately.

“We need action on this now

as this issue is not going to go away.

“We need to equip these service groups to better support the community with rental assistance and more housing.”

Better Together Community Support Inc CEO John Russell said like many social service providers on the Tablelands they had seen increasing pressures in housing and homelessness.

“Families that we support are having real problems trying to access housing or sometimes even hold onto their existing accommodation,” Mr Russell said.

“Trying to make ends meet when available housing stock is so low, and rental prices are starting to increase often means

poorer families are forced to move further out. When they move away from the larger towns it means they also move away from the services trying to help them turn their lives around.

Mr Russell said due to COVID people were moving away from larger towns and cities, as well as returning from overseas, was all putting upward pressure on the rental market and on the very limited housing stock.

“There is not enough social housing to go around, and it is not just here, it is happening right across Queensland and I think it is only going to get worse.” he said.

“There are very long waiting lists for social housing, and

there is very little in the way of private rentals available.”

“We think there are three issues; 1. No crisis accommodation available on the Tablelands, 2. Not enough social housing stock and an increasing waiting list for social housing and 3. Not enough private housing stock to meet the increasing demand.

“I guess you could add that there are not enough builders to go around.

“We need help from government, both State and Federal, to increase stock and to increase support to the families who are dealing with this issue right across the Tablelands community.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth and Better Together Community Support Inc CEO John Russell said like many social services providers they had seen increasing pressures in housing and homelessness.

Pulse reopens for youth at PCYC ANOTHER tool in the fight against youth crime has been re-launched in Mareeba with the Pulse Café re-opening after nearly 12 months in hibernation.

Pulse Café happens at the Mareeba PCYC every Thursday night from 6pm to 8pm as a way of getting youth off the streets, as well as engaging them with local Police. The café stopped in mid-2020 due to COVID restrictions and was relaunched a few weeks ago.

Manager of the PCYC Mareeba, Sergeant Mary-Anne West said it had been about 12 months since the café closed.

“For a while we were doing it the parks, but the kids said

they wanted to come back to the PCYC hall,” she said.

“Here at the hall, we have free Wi-Fi, pool table, table tennis and we also give them a hot feed while they are here.

“This café is aimed at high school aged kids and last week we had 43 kids which was a great start.”

At the end of the night MaryAnne and her staff drive the kids home.

“We now have a program running here on a Wednesday night where younger kids can drop in as its much quieter, on Thursday nights we have the café for high school aged kids and on Friday nights we go play basketball and fire up the BBQ

it was time for a change.

“We sold due to family and monetary reasons and a change in direction and Tom Hedley made us an offer we couldn’t refuse,” he said.

Before running the Tolga Hotel, the couple also ran the Albion Hotel in Normanton.

“It’s every little boys dream to own a country pub, so we ran the first one and 10 years ago we bought the free hold here in Tolga,” Steve said.

“We are going to miss the people, but we are both looking forward to sleeping in.”

Laura said that it had

been a whirlwind 10 years.

“It’s been a big part of our lives for the past 10 years; it’s been more of a lifestyle than a job,” she said.

“The highs and lows have all brought us here to a very happy ending for our little family. “We also want to say a big thank you to all the staff and we leave you in the very capable hands with our duty manager Maddison Vit who is staying on as venue manager.

“Of course, a pub is only ever as good as its drinkers so cheers to our customers for their loyalty and enthusiasm for the place over the years.”

BY RHYS THOMAS SINCE starting nearly a year ago, Comedy Tours has snowballed into a multi-functional comedy extravaganza with more tours and ideas being added to be enjoyed by locals and visitors.

Ida Portella, a well-known thespian, had the idea for the Comedy Tours last year while the region was in the crux of COVID. With little to no tourists to be seen the decision was made to advertise local tour-

ism with a gut busting comedic twist.

Now a nearly a year on and COVID a whisper in the night, local Comedy Tours have continued to grow and expand adding new tours for people to enjoy.

Mrs Portella could never have imagined that the Comedy Tours would have exploded into something amazing and enjoyed by so many.

“To be honest when I started it was more to get everyone doing something because there wasn’t much

North Queensland family produces only Australian grown Black pepper

BY SALLY TURLEY BLACK pepper is the world's most traded spice, but most of it is grown in a narrow region on either side of the equator where the climate suits pepper cultivation. Although it is native to South India, Vietnam is the largest producer of the ancient spice, growing around 163,000 tonnes annually, which equates to 36% of the world total.

But tucked away on a cane farm behind the little town of Silkwood, north of Tully, an Australian family have established the only commercial black pepper estate in Australia.

Donna Campagnolo's parents Levi and Myra, were looking for an alternative to sugar cane when the price plummeted in the late 1970's.

Levi and and his brother Louie Campagnolo were working in sugar plantations in the Phillipines and were inspired by the Black pepper they saw growing there. They imported cuttings to be propogated from Indonesia, established the first 200 plants and associated infrastructure by hand and have been quietly growing pepper there since the early 1980's.

Donna Campagnolo bought the farm from her parents in 2005 and has been managing the farm and “Aussie Pepper”, while maintaining a full time off-farm job for several years.

She has 50 hectares under cane and 5000 pepper plants on three hectares, including a newly planted area, which will take three years until it bears fruit.

Ms Campagnolo said the colume of crop production builds until it peaks at around 6-8 years, but they had 30 year old plants that were still bearing and she said she would keep the vines until they died.

“We need a good dump of around 100mm of rain to bring on flowering and we can have multiple flowerings,” said Ms Campagnola.

“Picking occurs 7-8 months after flowering and fruit set, when the berry has turned red and the corn inside the berry is hard, although we sometimes pick green berries during months 4-7 to send to Sydney and Melbourne markets for South East Asian cooking . We usually harvest around two to three tonnes a year, but have picked up to five tonnes in a bumper season, which is then

sold for $28/kilo.

“We have 12 locals who turn up to pick for two weeks each year.

“We lay mats down under the trees so no fruit falls onto the ground, we pick down onto the mats, then load them and bring them into the shed where the pepper ‘spikes’ are stripped from the twigs and leaves in a threshing machine.

“The peppercorns are then put through a large tumbler with blowers to eliminate more of the unwanted leaf matter before spending three to six days, depending on the humidity levels, drying in the sun.

“Rain around this time is a real issue, we have had to load the berries and take them up to Mareeba to dry there on a tarp some years. We could get solar driers, but they are too expensive to justify using for just 2 weeks a year.”

Next, the peppercorns are taken to a seed company at Walkamin to remove any remaining sticks, stones or leaves before being dried down to 10% and going into storage in 200 litre drums as whole black.

“We kibble, crack and grind the pesticide free peppercorns to the size required before packing them to order,” Ms Campagnola said.

“We mail a lot of product out to people all over Australia and overseas and supply most local IGA's in Innisfail, Cairns and on the Tablelands, as well as a couple of local delis, and outlets like Maggie Beer's Farmshop in South Australia and Herbie's Spices and The Essential Ingredient, both in New South Wales.

We always keep product aside for our regulars and because we sell out every year, we never have any old peppercorns on hand.”

As successful as it all sounds however, growing pepper is certainly not easy.

very specific temperature ranges and humidity levels. Despite its spicy flavour, it has a number of predators including feral pigs and several insects which the Campagnolas control with parasitic (Anastasus) wasps all year round.

More devastating however is the fungal disease that infects the soil and can cause widespread losses throughout the

plantation. Sometimes, the only option is to leave that entire section of the orchard fallow and move on to develop a new clean area.

There is always the potential threat of another cyclone, such as TC Larry, who wiped the place out with winds up to 215km/hr, a year after Donna purchased it.

And of course it is a labour

intensive, season dictated operation that constricts growers down to a two week picking window.

For Donna Campagnola however, it is a great mix of physical, outdoor labour and mental challenge to innovate ahead of the game, combined with a strong, growing market and opportunities for value adding.

“Choosing Australian grown pineapples isn’t just about buying a superior product, but also about supporting our farmers and keeping jobs in regional Australia,” he said.

Kennedy MP, Bob Katter is outraged at the decision to allow the import of pineapples into Australia.

Mr Katter said he will be writing to the Agriculture Minister, Trade Minister and Prime Minister calling on them to reverse the decision to allow the imports of pineapples from Taiwan, which was granted last year.

“We don’t help Taiwan by wiping out yet another industry in Australia,” he said.

“They have diseases we don’t have. They have cheaper and more abundant labour than we have. So, our growers will not be able to compete.”

“This is once again another agricultural industry that is about to sacrificed on the altar of free markets,” he said.

“We are now a net importer or fruit and vegetables. Most people don't believe me when I say that, but you can check it up with the ABS. “Cattle, wool, fish, dairy, tobacco, maize, eggs have all

been slaughtered by the major parties and their obsession with deregulation and free markets.

“All it means is Woolworths and Coles are free to mark up the price on supermarket shelves. In the last 30 years food prices have gone up 300% but inflation has gone up 200%. You are paying double for the price of food these days.

“To wipe out another element of our fruit and vegetable production is just not acceptable.”

Industry is also again flagging concerns raised during the recent import risk review concluded by the Australian Government, around whether biosecurity risks that come with importing fresh pineapples from Taiwan can be adequately managed.

In a statement, Australia's Department of Agriculture said pineapples from Taiwan were permitted for importation but must meet the following conditions: • They must be decrowned (top removed to reduce pest and weed seed risk, and risk of the top being planted/propagated in Australia and introducing diseases).

• They must be fumigated with methyl bromide to control pests on the surface of the fruit

like thrips and mealybugs.

• They must also be grown in Taiwan using standard commercial production practices and packing procedures.

Australia used to produce up to 140,000 tonnes of pineapples each year. This figure has dropped appreciably with the increase in imported pineapples for catering and food service as well as our supermarket shelves.

The majority of the pineapple on pizza is 100 per cent imported along with most of the many of the brands on our supermarket shelves.

Golden Circle, a brand synonymous with tinned fruit currently use pineapples from Indonesia in many of their tinned pineapple range. Australian grown pineapple is packaged and labelled specifically as Australia Pineapple Pieces.

Consumers are encouraged to read the labels on products they buy, and support Australian grown and packaged product.

The livelihood of families and complete towns depend upon a strong and sustainable farming industry. The latest battleground appears to be the thorniest yet.

PETER MCCULLAGH LOCAL pineapple producers in Far North Queensland are facing a fresh threat. News media in Taiwan has reported that a shipment of six tonnes of pineapples is expected to arrive in Australia in May, with smaller quantities to be sent by air cargo.

Taiwan’s largest market for

pineapples, China, recently banned the import of all pineapples from Taiwan citing biosecurity concerns.

The first consignment of imported pineapples is of concern to Australian and local growers.

Growcom, the peak industry body representing the Australian pineapple industry, has today voiced concerns.

“Australian consumers ex-

pect the highest standards of their fresh fruits and vegetables.

“That they are delivered fresh to the grocery aisle or the food service sector, and are grown under safe and sustainable conditions,” said Richard Shannon, Manager of Policy and Advocacy at Growcom.

“Until now consumers could be extremely confident their fresh, whole pineapples were

Communication needs to be a two way street IT has taken months for TMR to announce it, but the Barron River Bridge needs replacing.

I have been sending weekly emails to the department asking for confirmation of what we already knew. That the bridge is old and needs to be replaced, but this column is not about the bridge. It is about TMR and CHHHS and local members all the other government departments that think they are above serving the public and answering basic questions.

For example, last week we asked TMR three simple questions.

“What is the delay with the report? When will it be completed? And when will it be handed to the Minister”?

TMR issued a statement. “Investigations and repairs are ongoing on the Barron River Bridge at Kuranda,” “We are finalising a report on the best way to manage the bridge, including on-going monitoring, remedial works and a timeframe for the singlelane closure.

“We will provide an update as soon as possible.”

We got similar answers from the Member for Barron River and Cook.

During the peak of the COVID lockdowns we could not get any local information about the COVID situation from CHHHS who stubbornly refused to allow anybody to know how many COVID cases there were on the Tablelands, instead choosing to lump all the numbers together.

I can understand if a topic has commercial sensibilities or is a threat to national security, but the above examples affect the safety and wellbeing of all our lives, but

public servants who work under elected officials can keep us in the dark.

It is a pity that the rules do not apply the other way.

Currently a Queensland journalist is facing the threat of jail unless he reveals his confidential source. His name and employer have been suppressed by the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission (QCCC).

The QCCC want to know who his source was that tipped him off to a murder investigation and are threatening him with jail if he doesn’t reveal his source.

It is highly hypocritical of the Queensland Government to refuse important information like the safety of the Barron River Bridge or if there is COVID in your neighbourhood, but when a journalist will not reveal the source of his story, they threaten jail.

All the journalist did was report on some facts, whereas the above departments withheld information that threatened our health and safety.

The journalist’s case is currently being heard behind closed doors so that media cannot report on it.

If only the rules applied both ways. How much information do you think we would have if we could threaten a public servant with jail if they refused to reveal whether a bridge that thousands of people travel across is safe or not.

Queensland law gives the media no special protection, but public servants are free to duck and weave with no repercussions. This is the wrong way around and its just the way the government likes it.

Covid questions EVERYONE has a “case” of one disease or another during their life. Everyone. But governments are obsessed with “cases” of COVID-19.

Why count “cases” but not deaths?

The only metric that matters in a pandemic is how many die outside the norm.

How many healthy young people who would not have died of flu have died solely from covid? The answer is zero.

In 2020, for the first time in history, almost nobody died of flu and there were almost no flu “cases”. Wow, how’d they do that? And why didn’t they do that in 2019?

Some jurisdictions require the wearing of masks “because of the infection risk”.

So why aren’t there hazardous biological waste bins everywhere to receive dangerous used masks?

Why create “social distancing” rules when viruses float on breezes and drift high enough to nucleate the water droplets that form clouds?

SHED TALK MAREEBA Mens Shed started with a small membership back in 2010 and has grown since in members, services and popularity with the support of Mareeba Shire Council and many other businesses and service providers across our region.

One of the main aims of the Mens Shed movement is to provide a place where blokes can go to talk with other blokes of a like mind about all sorts of topics.

Doing projects for the community is a bonus for the members because a lot of them gain new skills using tools they may not have used previously and of course the local community benefits as well.

A bit like the male equivalent of the CWA. Generally most members are retired have time on their hands and are struggling to use that time effectively.

However we do have younger men who are not working full time for various

This panicdemic is a statistical fit-up embedded in a propaganda flood. It is the biggest crime ever committed against humanity – with 7.8 billion victims, you being one of them.

The media are accessories to this biggest crime ever. Let that sink in.

barbecues where members and partners can enjoy social activity.

Mareeba Mens' Shed also hosts visits from community members to councillors, politicians and health and other professionals and we assist other like minded community groups as much as we possibly can.

Men's Health and access to information are important and these are varied including all the typical Men’s health problems, overweight, diabetes, prostate and problems.

And at present we are to hold endeavouring monthly sessions on a whole range of topics from Health through to Access to Aged and other Services etc, Home Security and other relevant community topics.

Working with Community Health, we have also had a presentation on all aspects of Diabetes and Stroke just a few weeks ago.

Great start to a new season A RESURFACED track, new competitors and cars, and great weather were the perfect ingredients for an entertaining day for the Tableland Competition Car Club drivers at the Tepon Raceway, Wondecla on Sunday.

ATHERTON Senior Roosters head coach Graham Clark Snr split his 2021 squad into two first grade sides (Roosters One and Two) for Saturday nights final pre-season trial at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

All the Roosters players were given their final chance to cement a spot in the top side against the visiting Edmonton Storm and Cairns Brothers teams before the premiership rounds start on March 27.

It was the third trial hit out for the Roosters after playing Mareeba and Herbert River.

Roosters One had a convincing 29-10 win over Cairns Brothers with young 17-year-old flyer Nelson Bob crossing for two

tries in his first grade debut. Nigel Woodleigh, Jack Willis and Graham Clark Jnr also scored in the Roosters five tries to two victory.

In the other trial, Roosters Two went down 34-22 to Edmonton Storm after leading midway through the second stanza. Ty Grogan had another strong game for the Roosters crossing for two tries while Tristan Broome and Riley Stremouchiw grabbed one each.

The Roosters under 18 powered to a 48-10 win in their trial against the Edmonton Storm.

Winger Nelson Bob scored two runaways before repeating the effort in his first grade debut later on.

Thomas Cuda and Aiden Carsen also scored doubles for the young Roosters while Toby Blooranta, Morgan Payne and Coopa Stremouchiw were the other try scorers.

Brothers defeated Edmonton 36-24 in the reserve grade match.

The 2021 Cairns District Rugby League premiership kicks off this weekend with the Atherton Senior Roosters hosting Ivanhoes on Saturday in four grades from 2.30pm.

In other games, Mareeba play Kangaroos at Vico Oval on Sunday, Innisfail travel to Edmonton, Suburbs and Tully meet at Gordonvale while Brothers are at home to Mossman.

Tablelanders take on first boxing tournament TOWNSVILLE got a taste of the Tablelands after the Yungaburra Boxing Gym headed down on Saturday, March 13 for the ‘Rite of Passage’ Tournament with boxers from across the north competing.

Basketball back on One kilometre down, 350 to go

Mareeba basketball kicked off last Thursday with the season opener of the men’s competition.

BASKETBALL is back up and running with the season opener played last Thursday, March 18 at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall in Mareeba.

After choosing not to play last year due to COVID, the club is now back and ready to rumble with players hitting the courts for the 2021 season.

Men’s competition coordinator Brendan Ebner was excited to see the players back out enjoying the sport they love.

“There wasn’t really any animosity on the court or intense competition, people were there for the right reasons,” he said.

“There was a pleasant feeling and a lot of laughter during the game.

“People are a bit rusty so there were some silly mistakes that were laughed off, everyone enjoyed it.”

Now the season will continue with the men’s playing every Thursday night at the PCYC Hall next to the skatepark.

Boxers ready for war

BRYDES Boxing Gym in Mareeba will be hosting a boxing tournament this Saturday, March 27 with boxers from all over Queensland set to compete in the ring.

Mareeba Boxing Team will

use their skill in the finE art of boxing in hopes to become the boxing champions of the state.

Locals will battle it out in the seventh round of Boxers at War at the COVID Safe event at the Mareeba Turf Club.

The event will start at 6.30pm with food and drink available to purchase throughout the match.

Children aged 16 and under are free and adults are $20 each for admission.

The event starts at 6.30pm.

LATE last year the Tablelands was shocked after Rob Turner suffered a brain bleed during a family holiday, the region banded together behind the young father, including his school-yard friend, Aaron Dozier.

Aaron (pictured) is an exercise physiologist and longtime friend of Rob, he has committed to run 350km to raise money for Rob’s recovery efforts and support his family.

Originally the plan was to run one kilometre for every $50

donated to the go fund me page, however that plan has since changed as donations have surpassed $120,000.

So instead of running over 2000km Aaron has decided that 350km was a much more attainable goal.

Aaron has currently run 243.5 kms out of his 350 goal that was scheduled to be done between January and February of this year.

“That’s a lot of kilometres to run and I’m not built like a run-

ner,” he said.

“It worked out at about 20km a week which I figured was pretty manageable without destroying my joints.

“It’s been incremental each week doing three to five and five to seven kms each week then more on the weekends.”

The longest run that Aaron has done to date was a 22km half marathon on a weekend, this was followed by several kms through the week.

“I just felt good one day, so I just kept going,” he said.

Aaron has also decided to provide some of his exercise physiology expertise to help Rob on his road to recovery.

Even though Run for Rob was announced last year, Rob himself only found out about it two weeks ago while working with Aaron, which came as a welcome surprise.

Aaron will now finish running out his kilometres while hosting some seminars around the southern Tablelands with all money raised going towards Rob’s recovery.

The seminars will give people insight into how their body works and injury prevention while working in the gym or elsewhere.

The first seminar will be held at SIX Degrees Gym and Bouldering in Atherton this Friday at 5pm, tickets are available for $20 or pay on the night.

THE Mareeba Old Players and Supporters (MOPS) have once again given back to their community with heartfelt donations to both the Mareeba Cricket Club and Team Mareeba Boxing.

MOPS is a community club mainly made up of old rugby league players and supporters who organise fundraising and community events.

The profits from these events are often donated to charities or in this case, towards local sporting groups.

The Mareeba Cricket Club received a special trophy for their new interclub championship between the seconds and thirds teams, Team Mareeba Boxing received a pair of signed Danny Green (The Green Machine) boxing gloves.

President of the MOPS Robert Miller said that even though MOPS is generally made up of old football players, they support the wider community too.

“From the get-go we thought about what we wanted to do if we started this (MOPS), we’re not focusing on one thing we’re focusing on the whole community,” he said.

“It’s all about providing support to the community, were just here to help out.”

The Black Dog Institute and Nates Mates and are just some examples of the groups that MOPS has supported with dona-

tions since their founding.

Currently the MOPS are running a massive 300 ticket raffle to raise money, the first prize for this raffle is a generous $5000 for just a $50 entry ticket.

Second place gets $1000 while third gets $500, the tickets will be sold up until they run out or the night of the draw on April 24 with the rest of the money raised going to the Mareeba and Communities Health Care Services.

The only criteria to become a MOPS member is you must be over 35 and have a passion for local sport, not just football, and your local community.

Garnet Rodeo raring to go THE Mount Garnet Rodeo is set to be the place the be in the North with it being one of the only Rodeo’s going ahead in Far North Queensland in 2021.

After news came that both the Laura and Einasleigh races had been forced to cancel and temporarily downscale and move to Mareeba, Mount Garnet was thought to follow suit.

This is not the case however as they are not only going ahead but have had the government clear their COVID plans last Monday, approving their full weekend of buck riding fun.

Running from Thursday April 29 and finishing on May 3, the booked weekend will see keen rodeo and racegoers flocking to the grounds for a chance to see some cowboys vs bulls action.

Mount Garnet Rodeo is one of the only rodeo events cleared to go ahead so far this year and has also been cleared for the multi day racing over Friday and Saturday before the Sunday rodeo.

ATHERTON’S gifted young cricketer Amy Hunter has been the first Far North Queenslander to receive the Jodie Fields Young Cricketer Development Scholarship (JFYCD).

Amy has been awarded this prestigious scholarship valued at $3,000 to go towards supporting her future sporting and educational development.

Jodie Fields, a former Australian Captain, started this personal scholarship program seven years ago to assist talented female cricketers from regional centres.

“Having grown up in Toowoomba and travelled extensively throughout Queensland during my crick-

et career, I am acutely aware of the challenges facing regional and rural communities,” she said.

“These include equitable access to quality health and education opportunities, particularly for young women and girls.

“This scholarship is my opportunity to give back to another young cricketer.”

The scholarship provides $2,500 in financial assistance and $500 worth of playing equipment from Kookaburra.

After picking up the game at 10 years old, Amy currently plays for the Tier 3 junior sides and the men’s third grade sides in her home club of Atherton.

Even amid a disrupted sporting year in 2020, Amy has impressed talent devel-

opment staff at Queensland Cricket for her abilities, aptitude, attitude and approach to the game.

“It was really unexpected to be awarded this scholarship,” Amy said.

“Just to be awarded a scholarship from Jodie Fields is amazing, it’s just crazy.

“It’s great to see that all my hard work is paying off.”

Through her hard work and dedication Amy has been able to collect representative caps like they are going out of style, competing in both Sunshine Coast and Brisbane for state level sides.

Amy will not slow down however as she climbs higher and higher up the cricketing ladder.

With planning and preparation out of the way the committee is now counting down the days until their gates open and the weekend kicks off.

“We have always had a good following and we are very pleased to be able to run again this year and bring the event back to the community,” Mrs Rankine said.

“We are expecting a bigger crowd since there are limited functions on around the area.

“Please be patient and work with us because this all new to us all.”

Atherton cricketer Amy Hunter has been the first Far North Queensland recipient of the acclaimed Jodie Fields Young Cricketer Development Scholarship.

“We have worked closely with the Mount Garnet Turf Club to get approval for both our rodeo and the two days of racing,” said Mount Garnet Rodeo Secretary Kylie Rankine “We had a face-to-face meeting with Queensland Health to make sure that we had everything in line so that we could run the multiday event.”

In a stroke of luck and good timing the Mount Garnet Rodeo was able to submit their COVID-Safe plan and have it approved after more restrictions had lifted, ones that had prevented other events like the Laura and Einasleigh Rodeos, to cancel.

The restriction in question asked that organisers get everyone to sign in everyday of the multiday event, a feat that was too difficult to accomplish.

However now with that restriction lifted, people will only have to sign in once they arrive if they plan on staying the whole weekend, others who plan to leave and then return will have to resign in.
