Mareeba doctor awarded Clinical Educator of the Year MAREEBA Hospital’s Dr Merrilee Frankish has been Highly Commended as a Clinical Educator of the Year in Australia and New Zealand for her passion in assisting and instructing junior and student doctors.

Her passion for educating the newest generation of doctors is what earned her Highly Commended in the Clinical Educator of the Year award; she is just one of just three doctors across Australia and New Zealand to have received the commendation.

Dr Frankish grew up in the small town Tara just west of Dalby in Southern Queensland and she decided to pursue medicine as a way to combine science and people.

After several placements Queensland, Dr around Frankish settled in Mareeba in 1990 where she worked at the Mareeba Medical Clinic under Dr Bestmann and Dr Towne as a trainee doctor.

She then owned and operated her own practice before selling it in 2012 and working at the Mareeba Hospital specialising in obstetrics and newborns where she instructs student’s doctors and interns.

“I was very grateful the juniors from Cairns nominated me (for the award) and I really do enjoy being with the young doctors as they come through,” Dr Frankish said.

“It’s really important that they are shown compassion and support because it is a big transition from being a medical student into taking the re-

“I feel very inspired by them they’re a really great group of people.”

Dr Frankish currently works as a Senior Medical Officer at the Mareeba Hospital and often takes on the role of teacher and guide for the young aspiring doctors that rotate through the hospital.

Among her exploits is Dr Frankish’s many trips to and from Papua New Guinea

where she is part of a group called Australian Doctor’s International which is invited in by the provincial government in Papua New Guinea.

Dr Frankish was extremely humbled by her nomination for the award as she knows the standards that are set for this award are very high.

“It’s positive to be regarded in this way by the people in Cairns because they have

high standards and know what is expected,” she said.

“It’s been very wonderful to see the response from the community and I really appreciate that feedback.

“It all happens because we all work together as a team.”

Even now Dr Frankish is still looking to expand her horizons and is thinking of doing a Masters in Education in 2021.

Hub set to kick start 2021

BY RHYS THOMAS THE long awaited new library and Cedric Davies Community Hub in Mareeba is set to get underway in January, kick starting $4 million in capital works across the Shire.

At last Wednesdays ordinary and final meeting of 2020, the Mareeba Shire Council awarded and endorsed a number of tenders to the value of $4 million.

Cairns construction company, Osborne Construction Solutions has been awarded the refurbishment of the Cedric Davies Community Hub, while Mareeba builder Mindil Pty Ltd has been contracted to construct the new pound and animal refuge facility. FNQ Solar Solutions was awarded the tender for the Shire wide solar project.

After awarding the tender of the Hub works to a Cairns builder, Council stated that they (the builder) will work with local suppliers and contractors to refurbish the old Bowls Club into a modern new library and community space.

Osborne Construction Solutions were successful over two other Mareeba-based construction companies to secure the refurbishment with the motion to award them the tender carried unanimously.

tal score for their submission.

The lowest tender, which was Osborne Construction Solutions, came in at $990,610 for the refurbishment.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said that while pricing is important other factors take part in deciding which company is awarded the tender.

“While the price is clearly important, there are several other factors that play a significant role of the evaluation,” Cr Toppin said.

“Part of this criteria includes locality consideration which is built into the overall tender evaluation process.

“Council always likes to see projects awarded to local contractors but at the same time we must get the best value for money we can for the ratepayers’ dollar.”

MSC gives preference to local businesses giving them a 10% price advantage on

the first $50,000 of a contract which equals a maximum of $5,000 leeway for local businesses lodging their tenders.

This means that for a local business to be given preference they must only be a maximum of $5,000 more expensive than alternative tenders.

“Council has been in discussions and negotiations with the contractor for the Hub project, and we are satisfied that local suppliers and sub-contractors will be utilised wherever possible,” Cr Toppin said.

Mayor Toppin said Council is very appreciative to both the State and Federal Governments for the grants Council has received. “All of these projects are funded through grants and we are extremely grateful to both levels of government for the assistance provided to enable Council to deliver these projects without burdening the

ratepayer,” she said.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said while the Chamber is naturally disappointed with Council’s decision to not award the tender to a Mareeba company, it is ultimately their decision.

“It’s a bit disappointing from the chambers point of view, we would have preferred to have a Mareeba business,” he said.

“At the end of the day it is Council’s decision and they are answerable to the ratepayers.

“Hopefully even though they are a Cairns contractor, we hope they will source a lot of Mareeba sub-contractors.”

The Cedric Davies Community Hub Refurbishment is planned to start on January 11, 2021 with construction scheduled to be finished in early to mid-April 2021, weather permitting.

TRC Councillor issues apology to officers A TABLELANDS Regional Councillor has issued a public apology after he was found to have spoken inappropriately to Council staff.

A complaint was made regarding alleged inappropriate conduct by Councillor David Clifton at a council workshop in August of this year. It’s believed that Cr Clifton spoke in an inappropriate way to Council officers and a complaint was made to the Office of the Independent Assessor (OIA).

The matter was referred to Council by the OIA pursuant to section 150W(b) of the Local Government Act 2009. Acting Mayor Cardew said at Thursdays Council meeting in Malanda that Cr Clifton has acknowledged that he spoke inappropriately.

According to Council documents a complaint was received by the OIA on August 13, 2020 about the conduct of Cr Clifton.

The alleged conduct was alleged to have breached behavioural standards in the Code of Conduct for Councillors in Queensland.

The OIA wrote to Cr Clifton advising that the Assessor reasonably suspected the complaint involved inappropriate conduct and provided Cr Clifton with the opportunity to respond to the complaint.

On August 31, 2020 Cr Clifton provided a response to the complaint admitting to inappropriate conduct and regretting his response to Council staff at a Council workshop.

Cr Clifton indicated he was content to have the matter re-

ferred back to Council. Mayor Rod Marti, wrote to Cr Clifton on 13 October 2020 advising that the complaint had been referred to Council by the OIA and that the Mayor was managing the investigation, with assistance from the Chief Executive Officer, in accordance with Council's Investigations Policy.

The Mayor’s finding is that Cr Clifton engaged in inappropriate conduct and should be ordered to make a public admission to this effect.

At Thursday’s council meeting Cr Clifton stood up to read out his apology, directing it at the Council staff that he had offended.

Cr Clifton said that he had reflected on his behaviour at the August Council Workshop. “I’d like to make a formal apology to those council officers present at the time,’’ he said.

“In particular I would like to expressly apologise to Ms Jackson, Mr Vis and Mr Mitchell for my behaviour in unfairly singling them out and subjecting them to my anger and frustration. It was inappropriate and rude.

“I appreciate that as professional council officers they deserve to be treated with respect in their workplace and I recognise that my behaviour fell short of that respect.

“Again, please accept my apologies.’’

The matter was to be finalised at the December 2020 Ordinary Meeting and advice will be provided to the OIA of the outcome.

Brave Nate passes away after three year battle MAREEBA’S four and a half year old hero, Nate Moule, sadly passed away last Tuesday, December 15 after a three year long battle against a malignant brain tumour, surrounded by his loving family until his last moments.

Diagnosed in October 2018 Nate has been fighting since his diagnosis and received overwhelming support from his family and the wider community.

Nate even underwent several surgeries at the hand of world renowned neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo over his three year fight.

Unfortunately Nate could fight no more and peacefully passed away in Mareeba Hos-

pital last Tuesday while his favourite song, ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ played in the background.

Nate’s mother Katie wanted to thank everyone that has been a part of Nate’s journey.

“I didn’t realise until yesterday (Wednesday) the impact his life has had on our little community,” she said.

“The loss is quite profound in the community; there are a lot of people that are going to miss my little boy.

“Nate hated hospital so in his time since his diagnosis he’s only had 13 nights in hospital and he didn’t want to spend another.

“We did our absolute best to save his life, we did all we could.”

Katie was able to care for Nate at home and until his final hours, spending only six hours in hospital before he passed away.

In lieu of flowers and cards Katie is encouraging people to donate to her fundraiser for the Charlie Teo Foundation, search Katie’s Fundraiser for Charlie Teo Foundation on facebook to donate.

Nate’s family has already held a private cremation last Saturday and a public memorial will take place when they have had more time to grieve and heal.

President of Mareeba Lions Gary Searle said it was a great project with the cuddly teddies being given to front line ser-

vices for distribution to children suffering trauma, whether through accident or otherwise.

“Having a friendly bear within reach to give to an anxious child can make a real difference to the child and those attending,” he said.

Mr Searle said Teddy Bears were distributed to the Mareeba Hospital, Fire and Emergency services, Ambulance and Police; all of whom are confronted daily with children in need of comforting.

Locals have say over future of Malanda Caravan Park

Windfarm heading to the courts Locals show up in force at the Malanda Showground to voice their displeasure at the Malanda caravan park being put up for commercial lease.

MORE than 100 Malanda locals unhappy with the decision to lease out the Malanda Caravan Park got to have their say at an open meeting with the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) on Thursday, December 17.

The meeting was organised after the TRC voted to lease out the caravan park to a commercial operator at the November council meeting with Mayor Rod Marti saying at the time.

“We are not in the caravan park business.”

According to council documents, over the past four years the Malanda Falls Caravan Park incurred an operating cost to the Council of $125,000 per year on average.

At the November meeting TRC Councillor David Clifton said that in the 2019/2020 financial year, the caravan park cost each individual ratepayer $9.34.

“Due to competition regulations, we can’t be successful in running ventures like this,” he said.

“We need to stop the bleed of money, let’s get a commercial operator to run it and we will

continue to own it as a council asset.

“The community will now get a return from the operator, it’s outrageous to think that ratepayers have been subsidising people’s holidays.”

During last week’s meeting six locals had their chance to get up and speak with a question and answer session at the end.

Most concerns were based around a multi-national company taking over and ruining the park as well as locals wanting the current caretakers Janine and Rob Rielly to be allowed to continue with the job they’ve been doing.

Greg English’s Great Grandfather James English originally owned the land and donated the caravan park land to the Council about 70 years ago.

Mr English said the decision by the TRC to off load the park seemed to be rushed.

“Nobody knew anything about it being on the council’s agenda until the Monday evening and their meeting was on Thursday,” he said.

“There was no wide spread

community consultation.

“It’s our town and our community; we live here so surely there needs to be some community consultation.”

Mr English said the local community were worried that if the park goes out to commercial lease, the wide open spaces would get developed and it would be the ruination of the park.

“Nobody has said a word about the Lake Tinaroo Park being leased out, but everybody is upset about the Malanda Caravan Park being leased out.”

“That just goes to show the passion that people are feeling in this town.”

During the meeting Acting Mayor, Cr Cardew said “the majority of this council has no appetite to rescind the decision, but we do have an appetite to work with the community to come to a desirable outcome.”

Cr Cardew said he would make sure that the tender documents would be provided to the Malanda Chamber of Commerce for review and comment.

A WALKAMIN business owner is suing the owners of the Mt Emerald Windfarm for around $2 million dollars claiming that due to the noise she has lost business and her property price has dropped in value.

Owner of Walkamin Enterprises Jennifer Disley, is taking Ratch Australia to court claiming damages in the value of and business of $1.8M and the loss of the use and enjoyment of the home and dwellings of $50,000 plus aggravated damages in the sum of $100,000 dollars as well as interest and costs.

The nearest turbine to Ms Disley’s property is 1.25 km from her southern boundary and 1.87km from her home.

In court documents obtained

by The Express, Miller Harris Lawyers wrote.

“That the noise generated by the wind farm materially exceeds the operational noise limits…”

“A declaration that the operation of wind turbines by the first defendant (Mt Emerald Wind Farm) at the wind farm has caused and will continue to cause substantial damage to and for the plaintiff by reason of unreasonable interference with the use and enjoyment of the plaintiff's land.”

Mystery shrouds bridge LEADING up to the Christmas holidays locals who use the Barron River Bridge at Kuranda have been left wondering why the bridge is still only operating at one lane.

The one lane closure and load reduction to 50.5 tonnes has caused traffic hassles for locals as well as headaches for truck drivers.

While inspections of the bridge have been ad-hoc over the past few weeks, locals have been left wondering why the bridge is still only one lane on weekends and late at night when nobody is working on it?

Kuranda local Ranjini Rusch who is the admin of the Affordable Public Transport Kuranda Facebook page recently posted “Although the Kuranda Barron Bridge has been deemed safe, It has come to my attention that the damage to the bridge is quite serious and that the crack in the concrete had grown since it was last inspected,” she wrote.

“It has also come to my attention that the weight limit may be reduced to possibly 20t and

that the main lights at Kuranda turnoff will be put to use to operate the lights at the bridge (reducing the need for traffic controllers).

“I sincerely hope we as residents of Kuranda and the surrounding region are not being left in the dark here in regard to the seriousness of the degradation of the Barron Bridge.

“Just recently, driving down the range, there were 4 very large trucks crossing the bridge together in front of me. How can that be managing weight limits? How long will the Barron Bridge be reduced to one lane?

We need answers.”

The Express posed a number of questions to TMR including: When are inspections due to finish up? Why is the bridge still at one lane when there are no people working on the bridge? (after hours, weekends, etc) What specifically is wrong with the bridge, ie, what are TMR staff inspecting?

with a TMR spokesperson saying “We are carrying out inspections on the Barron River Bridge, near Kuranda,” they said.

“The bridge has been reduced to one lane and we currently have no plans to change the load limit at this time.

“We will receive a report next month (January 2021), which will provide recommendations on the best way forward, including a likely timeframe for the single-lane closure.

“We thank motorists and residents for their patience and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.”

At November’s Mareeba Shire Council meeting the topic of the bridge was brought up with councillors concerned that the bridge had been reduced to one lane with the possibility of its load limit being reduced from 50.5 tonne to just 25 tonne in the future.

A council spokesperson said, “We are writing to the state minister regarding the new load lim-

its,” they said. “Council is concerned that if the bridge stays at one lane and is reduced to 25 tonne it will have major implications on the local community.”

In Ms Disley’s legal claim she is demanding that the wind farm be restrained from operating turbines between 8pm and 7am and at other times operate in reduced power (low noise) mode.

“The Plaintiff has been suffering loss and damage since August 2018 when the turbines started operating,” the claim said.

“In all the circumstances, the noise generated by the operation of the wind turbines by the (wind farm) is excessive and has caused, and will continue to cause, pain and suffering, particularly involving sleep deprivation and future consequential harm, annoyance and discomfort.”

Ms Disley is also suing Marshall Day Acoustics claiming

that Marshall Day “has engaged in conduct which is misleading or deceptive in contravention of Australian consumer law (ACL).” Claiming that their noise reports allowed the development to proceed.

“The defendant (Marshall Day) excluded relevant noise data from the analysis on which a compliance report was premised,” the claim said.

A RATCH-Australia spokesperson told The Express “Our position is that noise monitoring carried out by a reputable acoustic consultancy demonstrates that the wind farm is in full compliance with development approval conditions regarding noise. We strongly dispute the complainant’s allegations and will defend this claim.”

Swimming hole to be donated to TRC University student Grace Arnold-Nott from Beatrice who has been swimming at Con’s since she was a little girl.

A MYSTERIOUS and hard to find swimming hole may soon be added to tourist maps when a small sliver of land is handed over to Tablelands Regional Council (TRC).

Con’s Pool, as it’s known in Millaa Millaa, was originally owned by Con Hennessey who

was the first registered student at the Millaa Millaa Public school.

Over the years, the land has changed hands several times with owners not being able to secure public indemnity insurance in case of an accident while people traversed across their land to the waterhole.

In August of this year Millaa Millaa real estate agent Pat Reynolds sold the property to the new owners Charlie Veron and Mary Stafford-Smith.

Mr Reynolds said while explaining the history of the property the new owners came up with the idea of gifting the land

back to the council.

“They wanted to look into a way that locals could have safe and easy access to the pool.” Mr Reynolds said.

Mary Stafford-Smith said they felt it was the simplest way to sort out the problems related to the swimming hole.

“It’s been a local landmark for a long time and when we bought the land, we wanted it to remain as it is,” she said.

“It just seems like the simplest solution to a long term problem and we are happy to donate it back to the public.”

said Cons Pool had have been an iconic swimming hole for the local community for more than a century.

“The new owners were concerned about people entering through their property to get access to the pool,” he said.

“They were looking ways to allow the public to have safe access while taking their public liability away.

“So we met with them about three weeks ago and explained that they can make an application to excise a little piece off their land, which they are happy to do.”

Cr Bilney said the couple are now looking into donating a small sliver of land of about 100 square metres, which will be gifted back as public land and can be used as a corridor down to the Con’s Pool.

“This is not a contentious issue; I actually think this is a feel good story for the community and also thanks to the generosity of the new owners.

“It’s a great collaboration between the community and council taking a common sense approach to this.”

University student Grace Arnold–Nott from Beatrice said she had been coming to Con’s since she was a little girl.

“It’s a great local place to swim, there’s usually heaps of kids running around and swimming,” she said.

“It’s like the local swimming pool; it’s really impressive when it’s full of water.

“It’s great news that the land and pool is going to be handed back to the public.”

Mareeba Shire Christmas lights winners announced THE winners for the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Christmas Lights Competition have been announced.

The Christmas Lights Competition sees residents of the Mareeba Shire showcasing their bright Christmas lights to be judged by Council.

Councillor Locky Benstead was one of the judges for the competition and decided to make it a family event, inviting his family to come along and enjoy the lights.

“It was really good I felt that everyone who participated went to the next level,” he said.

“It made it really hard be-

edge and was surprised when informed she had won.

“I just go all out I love Christmas I’ve even started planning for next year,” she said.

“I’ve still got lots of boxes full of decorations that I haven’t even opened yet.

“I just love the kids’ faces when they see it and the enjoyment they get, especially the grandkids.”

This was Julie’s first time entering the competition and her first win; she is now looking forward to participating next year with the added benefit of decorating her new Mareeba home.

Tablelands lights up Dimbulah Expressions of interest

First place in the TRC Christmas Light competition residence category went to Val Moses at 8533 Kennedy Highway, Atherton.

THE Tablelands are glowing, flashing and sparkling after Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) Tablelands Shines Christmas Lights Competition received 33 individual and four street entries.

The winners were announced at the Ordinary Council meeting in Malanda on Thursday December 17, with many of the winners there to pick up their prizes.

TRC Councillor David Clifton said it was great to see so

many houses and streets vying for recognition.

“Councillor Bernie Wilce and I travelled across the Tablelands with our wives who were the community judges,” he said.

“The effort people go to, to decorate their homes is quite awe-inspiring, which made judging very difficult,” said Councillor Wilce.

WITH Christmas only day’s away Tablelands Police are disappointed after eight people were charged with drink driving offences and three people were charged with drug driving over the December 12-13 weekend.

Officer in Charge of the Mareeba Road Policing Unit, Sergeant John Ridgway said with an increase in drink drivers detected over the weekend, local police would be rolling out a series of targeted operations.

“We want to ensure everyone has a happy and safe festive season and not one tarnished by road trauma,” Sergeant Ridgway said.

“Over the Christmas and school holiday period, police will be out in force, targeting drivers who put themselves and other road users at risk by making poor decisions and breaking the road rules.

“Officers will be conducting bulk random alcohol and drug testing for drivers, undertaking both covert and overt speed enforcement strategies in high-risk zones while maintaining a highly visible presence throughout the campaign.

Sergeant Ridgway wanted

to reminded motorists that 30 people died and approximately 2,000 people were injured on Queensland roads during last year’s Christmas Road Safety Campaign.

“We urge everyone to drive to the road conditions and consider the Fatal Five contributing factors to road fatalities when getting behind the wheel of their vehicle,” he said.

“These include speeding, drink and drug driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, driving tired and being distracted such as using mobile phones while driving.”

“Please make alternate travel arrangements and avoid driving home if you’ve had a few.

Sergeant Ridgway also said depending on how many drinks you had the night before you may not be safe to drive the next morning.

“You may in fact still be over the limit hours after your last drink, do yourself and other road users the biggest favour you can and err on the side of caution,” he said.

“If you plan to drink, plan to get home safely – organise a lift or stay at a mate’s place.

“Police are reminding motorists that if they are attending Christmas parties, they need to make alternative arrangements to get home.”

THE Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) and Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Mayor’s Christmas Appeals are still accepting donations before Christmas.

Currently MSC has received more than $3000 in donations to date while TRC has received over $6000.

The money raised from the two Mayor’s Christmas Appeals will be donated back to various community groups across each council’s shire to assist local families during Christmas.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin is thankful for everyone who donates to the appeal and for spreading some Christmas kindness and cheer.

“I sincerely thank everyone who has donated to the annual

appeal,” she said.

“I am sure that the assistance via the community centres will make the festive season a little brighter for those families in need.

“It has been a difficult year for many and I hope that 2021 is a better year for us all.”

Rural firefighter awarded medals for service MAXWELL Hubner, a founding member of the Paddys Green Rural Fire Brigade, was honoured for his 28 years of service on Saturday, December 12, being awarded a QFES medal and a QFES Outstanding Firefighter National medal.

The QFES medal was awarded for the amount of time that Maxwell has spent volunteering for rural fire services while the Outstanding Firefighter National medal is rare with only five to ten medals given away in North Queensland each year.

Originally a Fire Warden in Millaa Millaa Maxwell formed the Paddys Green Rural Fire Brigade after a massive blaze erupted in Paddys Green in 2010.

Maxwell has been a rural firefighter for 28 years with the last 10 of those being at the Paddys Green Rural Fire Brigade where he currently holds the position of First Officer.

When asked about why he

voluntarily puts his life on the line to battle deadly blazes Maxwell said that it’s just his way of giving back.

“I’ve actually got time to give back to the community and that’s what it’s about, it’s my turn to give back,” he said.

“You get very close with the people you work with and when you go out you want to know that the fella with you isn’t going to run when it gets bad.

“There’s a lot of trust and that is built up through working with them.”

Rural Firefighters in his brigade, himself included attend up to 30 fires a year in and around the area.

In 2018 Maxwell was also awarded with the Commissioner’s Award for Excellence to recognise his achievements and significant contributions that furthered QFES values and goals.

THE Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) has brought its budget back into the black for the first time in five years.

The services annual report which was tabled in Parliament on Monday December 14, shows that CHHHS ended the 2019-20 financial year with an operating surplus of $60,000, compared with an operating deficit of $9.1 million for the previous financial year.

CHHHS Health Board Chair Clive Skarott said that 201920 was one of unexpected challenges and extraordinary achievements “Our end-of-financial year break-even result marks the successful end of our three-year plan to return to a balanced budget. We have been able to achieve a balanced result thanks to the efforts of all our staff, who actively engaged in programs to improve the efficiency of our services, while still delivering high quality care,” said Mr Skarott.

Chief Executive Tina Chinery paid tribute to the efforts of staff over the past year in managing the balance between delivering essential health services and being ready for COVID-19 cases.

“Our focus in the second half of the financial year shifted to the COVID-19 pandemic response and recovery with work also focusing on the continued delivery of essential health services,” said Ms Chinery.

“We are the largest employer in the region, and every one of our 6,362 full-time, part-time and casual staff has worked incredibly hard to deliver the very best in patient care in this very challenging time for health across the globe.”

Warning of fake scams THE Financial and Cyber Crime Group are reminding locals to be aware of Grinch-like scammers and be sure to stay alert to scams, such as fake buyers.

Red flags to look out for in spotting a fake buyer include someone wanting to purchase your item without seeing it first, often with a story claiming they are unable to be contacted via phone, video call or in person.

They may also request to pay upfront for delivery costs, promising to reimburse you; or message you saying they have paid, even sending fake email or screenshots as ‘proof of payment’.

Detective Inspector Vince Byrnes from the Financial and Cyber Crime Group advises to only give over your item when

you are confident the buyer is legitimate.

“Wait until the funds have cleared in your bank account before meeting your potential buyer in a public space,” Detective Inspector Byrnes said.

“If a potential buyer is inspecting your item, consider your personal safety when arranging a meeting and ensure someone else is there.”

Do not be tricked into sending a copy of your driver licence to someone you don’t know.

Scammers can use this tactic to steal your ID to scam further people.

NQ State call gets louder Calls for a North Queensland state are now getting louder after Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill expressed her support for the cause.

Cr Hill said in the next 10 years, if the regions want to drive growth, a serious conversation must be had about a separate state.

“One of the big problems we have is we’ve got a massive drain of people going to Canberra and Brisbane because that is where the jobs are,” Cr Hill said.

Cr Hill said people needed to lead the charge in creating a new state, which she believed could start north of Rockhampton at the Isaac ¬Regional Council boundaries.

This would give the new

state the mining wealth of the Galilee and Bowen basins.

Cr Hill said while politicians were well-intentioned in their support of the regions, the bureaucrats in Brisbane and Canberra were standing in the way of a prosperous North.

Kennedy MP Bob Katter welcomed the support of Jenny Hill and he suggested a referendum for a separate territory of North Queensland should take place at the next local government elections in Queensland, in 2024.

“The ballot paper should ask North Queensland residents whether they want to become a territory, as a first step towards statehood,” he said.

Mr Katter agreed with Jenny Hill’s reasoning for a North Queensland state, saying it was patently obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes that the northern region missed out when compared to Brisbane.

“The south-east corner would have more than 200 overpasses, and yet we only have 13 up in north Queensland,” he said.

“They have a $1 billion building, the tower of power, just to house their government workers and bureaucrats. They are building a second motorway to the Gold Coast, whereas we have a one-lane, goat-track called the Bruce Highway, and the Flinders Highway is falling apart.

“We are the only area on earth where nearly one-million

people are governed by a government 1,500 kilometres away.

This can’t continue.

“If North Queensland was a separate country it would be the richest country on earth, with all its coal, the bulk of Australia’s copper and silver-lead-zinc deposits, almost all of our bauxite, and it would be the wettest country on earth.”

Member for Hill Shane Knuth said the time had come to separate from the South East corner.

“Every redistribution more seats are abolished in the North and important issues such as vegetation laws, croc management, asset sales and infrastructure projects are decided by Brisbane politicians,” Mr Knuth said.

“North Queenslanders should decide what is in the best interest for North Queensland.”

Mareeba author launches newest book MAREEBA-BASED writer Dick Eussen has released his latest book, ‘Stone Country Justice’ a turn from his usual nonfiction writing as this is his first ever fiction book.

His newest book was launched last Tuesday, December 15 in Mareeba with friends, family and even Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter in

Mr Eussen is a well-known non-fiction writer who has previously published seven books based on fishing and four-wheel drive travel, all drawn from his own experiences living in Australia.

His newest book, ‘Stone Country Justice’ is a novel set in Arnhem Land, a piece of Aus-

tralia that is not widely known about by the outside world or the rest of Australia.

Mr Eussen was excited to launch his new book last week and said it something that he has wanted to do for a long time.

“I used to work on stations years ago after I left school and I used to do a lot of hunting and fishing so I got myself a little

camera and that’s how it started off,” he said.

“I started off hand writing all of my articles and if you had a good story to tell in those days someone would put it into gear and make it readable.

“I am excited to launch my first fiction book I hope it sells and it could even make a good movie.”

LOCAL school leavers are now able to apply for a $5000 scholarship to help meet the costs of relocating to study at James Cook University.

The Federal Government’s $5,000 Tertiary Access Payment scholarship will be available for relocating regional and remote school leavers commencing tertiary study in the 2021 academic year.

JCU has more than 800 scholarships up for grabs, worth more than four million dollars.

Vice Chancellor Professor Sandra Harding said the scholarships aim to help close the city-country divide in tertiary education by providing financial assistance to relocate to a JCU campus.

“A recent review found people living in regional and remote areas are less than half as likely as their city counterparts to obtain a university degree by the time they are 35,” she said.

“Furthermore, regional and remote students who received a university offer were almost twice as likely to defer their studies as metropolitan applicants.”

Prof Harding said she hopes the new scholarships

will make it easier for students to access university study.

“The scholarship is a once-off payment towards start-up expense such as bond for accommodation, assistance with rent and other household bills,” she said.

“We hope it will provide an incentive for students to start their studies at JCU immediately after finishing secondary school, rather than taking a gap year to save money.”

Prof Harding also hopes the scholarships will help Indigenous students overcome some of the barriers to accessing higher education.

“Indigenous students from regional and remote areas face cumulative challenges that can make it even more difficult to attend university,” she said.

Children from Mareeba Theatre Group took to the streets of Mareeba on Friday to sing carols and bring Christmas joy to all.

THE Mareeba Junior Theatre Group took to the streets last Friday, 18 December to spread some Christmas cheer through song as they sang carols along Byrnes Street in Mareeba.

Due to there being no official Christmas carols event being sung in Mareeba and the Carols by Candlelight event cancelled, this was a welcome change for residents.

The kids travelled from the post office square and up and down the main street singing their carols.

Passing residents enjoyed the performances with many joining in before continuing with their day.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year #averymareebarotarychristmas WHILE COVID meant Mareeba Rotary had to cancel Carols by Candlelight this year, the members still wanted to do something to spread Christmas cheer.

From there the #aVeryMareebaRotaryChristmas initiative was launched on social media.

The winners were announced on Sunday and they were Petrina McGuire, Linda Carucci and the Mareeba Animal Refuge.

The winners will share in the $450 prize pool and also feature in the Mareeba Rotary Christmas film. Thank you to everyone who posted photos and helped to spead some festive fun.

Season’s Greetings THE story of Christmas forever amazes me with baby Jesus who was born in a barn, grew up in a normal household, walked the dessert, laughed, loved, showed compassion, healed the sick and performed miracles before dying on the cross and rising again.

While 2000 years later, despite an ever changing world, Jesus is still the same yesterday, today, and forever.

As Christmas draws near, this is a time to forget about the stresses of life, a time to spend with family and friends, enjoy sports and leisure, fishing and camping.

And most importantly a time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.

IN the trench lines on the Somme in 1914, whistles blow – over the top – a wall of machine gun bullets a hailstorm of shrapnel.

And it went on and on and on.

Then it was Christmas Eve. A German soldier’s voice singing gently over no man’s land.

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht And then after a short time later from the British lines.

Silent Night, Holy night, The troops on both sides understood the message of Christ.

The world both then and now may believe life ends in death, decay and nothingness.

Christ’s birth gives us the idea, if not the reality, of eternal life.

Join with those soldiers who trusted their enemy and climbed out of their trenches unarmed as they sang… Christ the Saviour is born.

Sugarcane diversity project lands in FNQ A RECENT research collaboration is looking to break the mould for sugarcane variety research and development and deliver long-term commercially viable diversification options for Far North Queensland growers and millers.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia’s (CRCNA) $1.3 million three-year project is focused on boosting tonnages and extracting more value from feedstock.

It will not only support the long term prosperity of local growers but also the local mills and broader Far North Queensland economy.

Project Lead Professor Frederik Botha from the University of Queensland’s Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) said crop trials of commercial, near commercial and energy cane varieties have already started on the Tablelands and in Mossman.

“Initially, we are focusing on identifying those cane and sorghum varieties which are the best biomass producers, meaning they are energy dense, with good foliage, high fibre and sugar

levels,” he said.

“We will then take a close look at the chemical composition of these varieties examining the whole plant from the leaves, trash and the stalks.

“This will help us determine the best varieties and how these components could be further developed into commercially viable products to boost income streams for growers and millers.”

Mossman grower and trial participant Don Murday said exploring diversification options is crucial to the long-term viability of the region’s mill and sugarcane industry.

“Biomass has long been touted as a quality, renewable feedstock source for mills and a value-add for growers,” he said.

“As growers we need to invest in our future and ensure we can maximise the value of our crops.

“Moving to an integrated, rotational production system which includes traditional sugarcane varieties grown alongside high energy canes or sorghum, means we could deliver new, sustainable income streams for growers and millers.”

2020 crushing season ends AS the wet season approaches local sugar mills have called time on the 2020 crush.

While some facilities like the Mossman mill ended their season in October, MSF’s South Johnson Mill worked through until December 6.

MSF’s South Johnstone Mill completed the year with a final throughput of 1,483,185 tonnes at 12.34 commercial content of sugar (CCS).

The Mulgrave Mill completed this year’s operations on November 27 with a final throughput of 1,290,314 tonnes at 12.24 CCS. MSF’s Tableland’s Mill finished the season on November 13 with a final throughput of 596,801 tonnes at 14.37 CCS and the Maryborough Mill wrapped up on November 18 with a final throughput of 633,914 tonnes at 14.49 CCS. Far Northern Milling’s (FNM) Mossman Mill finished up on October 30 with 647,990 tonnes at 12.43 CCS while toll crushed cane through the Tablelands Mill (by MSF on behalf FNM) finished with 110,580 tonnes with a 13.87 CCS. Far Northern Milling Chief Executive Officer Bronwyn Dwyer said they were a little disappointed with this year’s tonnage.

The season was very dry and the cane didn’t grow on, so our tonnage was below estimate at the finish,” she said.

“The shareholders are extremely happy now that we have gotten through our first full season.”

As for next season Ms Dwyer said they would like a good wet season and a bigger crop “We would like to aim for around 800,000 tonnes, which would be great.”

Australian Sugar Milling Council Director of Government and Industry Affairs Jim Crane said the end of the Queensland

season ended better than expected due to a wet start to season.

“The Far Northern zone (Tully North) ended with 6,481,880 tonnes at 12.76 CCS,”he said.

“The tonnage was pretty close to what we predicted, 6.518 million tonnes.

“Australia wide we did just over 31 million tonnes.”

Mr Crane said the 2020 season was a good outcome for farmers, given what they were anticipating and considering that sugar prices are depressed at the moment.

“I would describe this year as an average crop for the Far

North.” He said.

Mr Crane also said that the rain over the past few weeks had been a useful for the start of the 2021 season.

“La Nina could be good and bad news for the next season,” he said.

“If the Far North gets a wetter than average season, it doesn’t translate into a good crop.

“It could mean too many cloudy days during the wet season which is peak the growing period.

“The largest concern for Far North farmers coming into 2021 will be too much rain.”

Don’t enter banana farms THE message at the top of the Christmas list for North Queensland banana growers is – Don’t enter banana farms.

North Queensland farmers have come together to ask the community for their help with protecting their farms from Panama disease tropical race 4 (Panama TR4).

Joining forces with Biosecurity Queensland and the Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) to spread the message through a series of videos titled ‘Get in the Zone’, banana growers are sharing their story about what biosecurity is, and how everyone can play their part in protecting farms.

Biosecurity Queensland’s Panama TR4 Program Leader, Rhiannon Evans said the videos were in response to grower demand for greater community awareness.

“What someone may think is a harmless photo opportunity or a nice place to pull up at a ba-

nana farm could be the catalyst to spreading pests and disease on that property,” said Ms Evans.

“The North Queensland community relies on the banana industry for economic stability, so we all need to understand our role in protecting our farms from Panama TR4 and spread the word that it’s not okay to go onto a banana farm without permission.”

In anticipation of an influx of tourists coming to the North this Christmas, fourth generation growers Shayne and Blaise Cini of Edari Bananas featured in the videos to try and build awareness of why biosecurity is so important.

“People need to understand they can’t just go on to a banana farm,” said Mr Cini who believes that shoes and tyres are the two most preventable ways of spreading the soil borne fungal disease.

threat that industry’s facing today and we’re doing all we can to prevent an incursion on our property.

“We’re just asking everyone around us to help do their best as well by respecting farm biosecurity.”

Tropicana Banana North Queensland manager, Gavin Eilers joined the initiative to correct misguided beliefs about Panama TR4.

“I’ve had people show up on my farm in utes covered with dirt and think it’s okay because they haven’t come from another banana farm, which is wrong,” said Mr Eilers.

“Panama TR4 is an invisible enemy which could be in any dirt from anywhere.”

I am the one injured in the gas bottle explosion which rocked Mareeba four weeks ago.

Everyone tells me it is a miracle I survived at all. If you see me around, don’t be shy, say “hi”.

Of course we can’t shake hands (and of course we shouldn’t anyway). Let your little ones ask the awkward questions rather than point and stare.

I am still the same person and, although I now have a disability, I don’t feel disabled.

I will be forever grateful for the quick action of neighbours (you know who you are), skilful and professional care of paramedics and medical staff in both Mareeba and Cairns, and for the compassion shown to my wife by Police and QFES. separating waste allows our family to think we are contributing somehow to our environmental footprint.

The businesses that produce this mountain of packaging should be of course held accountable, but in a strange twist of fate and clever marketing the downtrodden consumer is left with the job and is in fact encouraged to celebrate their recycling preparation efforts.

To read that the last seven months or so of TRC recyclable waste has gone to landfill without public consultation leaves our family powerless and questioning.

Who told kerbside drivers to treat recycling as wet waste? Who is accountable?.

I understand that during COVID lockdown there have been many changes in procedures, but for this misleading to go on for seven months is careless.

I, as one ratepayer, would have appreciated this information. I could have stockpiled my own recycling and changed my buying habits to accommodate.

To think seven months of diligent washing and processing in our household and countless other households was for nothing.

No change after Malanda meeting I ATTENDED the Council meeting in the Malanda on 17/12/20 about their decision to lease out the Malanda Falls Caravan Park to a commercial operator, saying the cost to ratepayers and the fact that it was not part of their core business, is why they made the decision.

At the public meeting, eight members of our community, representing various interest groups, addressed the councillors and those of us attending this public meeting supporting the present operators and asking that the council reconsider its decision which was made without any community consultation whatsoever.

The acting mayor said they had no intention of revisiting their decision but would work with interested groups and their concerns. I am sure that everyone who attended

the meeting came away with the same feeling as I did – here we go again (Mary Street revisited).

I would suggest that most of us who voted in this new council hoped for a consultative group of new representatives who would not make the same mistakes as the previous council.

If we look outside our area many rural councils in Queensland have camping and caravan sites at their local showgrounds so we can hardly say that we are the exception.

Another point that they have failed to recognise is all the land from Malanda falls up to and including the showgrounds was gifted to the Malanda community. It is a shame that the 2000 signatures are not enough to sway our elected representatives. It is also a shame that under local government rules the voters cannot place a vote of no confidence in our local councillors and mayor.

Also planned is the destruction of the Patrick English pavilion at the show grounds and its replacement with a modern building with no soul and of course we would loose our lovely dance floor.

We also should be aware that this building has heritage value as it was the entertainment building at the 7th Div AIF camp at Danbulla during WW2 and was purchased after the war and then dismantled by a group of volunteers from Malanda at Danbulla, then transported to Malanda show grounds and re-erected on its present site.

This council also has identified many other community buildings in our town they would like to dispose of because of neglect by many of our previous councils. Also the one way street debacle which is failing to allow at least two disabled parks on the main road side of the chemist shop where the ramp is, surely if the council approached TMR and asked them to make this concession to support people with disabilities.

Van park renters are valuable income CONSIDERING there’s a lot

of homelessness around and desperate renters needing permanent accommodation, caravan parks are saying big no to an income from permanent renters – yet now the TRC are screaming ‘broke’.

TRC may need a rethink.

Permanent renters need accommodation and they are a valuable van park income.

Many know how to do basic maintenance and can also help on the property. The TRC should come down from planet stupid.

A good move for TRC to get out of the caravan business, but the land was paid for by rates and taxes and the TRC is only an employee of the community of ratepayers and taxpayers.

Community spirit shines in Herberton ON Saturday night December 12, Herberton held a very successful twilight street market.

A huge ‘thank you’ to Karen Rosman from Herberton Tin Town Sweets for doing a fantastic job pulling it all together. It is a massive job and she did it well with the help of Herberton’s CIA members.

The Herberton Business and Tourism Association took on a project to replace the sixty year old coloured lights many of which no longer worked, that stretched along the main street.

Thanks to Max Enfield of Boutique Power and HBTA secretary for organising and co-ordinating Ergon and Traffic Management to have the lights fitted over two days just in time for the market. They look superb.

Of course, the lights could not have been replaced without out the community’s help.

It was from the generosity of many Herberton CIA, community groups, the state school, business and local residents whose donation to buy a light that made it all happen.

Herberton, the Village in the Hills, has a great community spirit and it certainly shone through with this project. Thank you everyone who helped make it all possible.

The year that changed us

AS this is my last opinion piece for the year, I’ve decided to put 2020 under the microscope.

The year started with the worst bushfires in recorded history, then a once in a hundred-year pandemic started a domino effect which led to the worst economic recession in living memory. There were also droughts, black lives matter protests and the most embarrassing US president of all time was booted from office.

If we did put 2020 under the microscope what would we see? A mosaic of faces on Zoom. The sight of families visiting grandparents with toddlers waving through the glass.

Or would we see a face mask, an item that used to seem so foreign but is now so commonplace.

While looking under the microscope we also see the birth of a whole new vocabulary – social distancing, herd immunity, bubble, lockdown, and flattening the curve.

The phrase ‘I can’t breathe’ could easily have been about catching COVID as much as it was George Floyd’s last words, as he was choked to death by Minneapolis police.

How many times have we heard the phrase “Stop the world, I want to get off?” This year it actually seemed like the world did stop. People started to marvel at the natural world they had previously ignored, rushing out and buying plants and seeds and edibles.

City centres previously choked with traffic now seemed easy to get around. You’d look upward and see skies clear of aircraft. Environmental scientists found that air quality actually improved in cities across the globe, we reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lessened water and noise pollution, and contributed towards a possible “restoration of the ecological system”.

2020 will be remem-

bered as the year of the virus but it also provided a glimpse of how things could be different. Governments and scientists across the globe started working together. This year scientists were the real heroes, as we begged them to come up with a vaccine which they did, in unprecedented speed.

COVID also accelerated what was already happening in our world.

Working from home was already on the rise, but it went from being an exception to the rule.

People were already shopping online before 2020, but it’s estimated COVID accelerated the shift from physical stores to digital shopping by about five years.

Then there was the secondary pandemic – loneliness. The war against the virus deprived people of human contact; ‘social distancing’ became too real. After just a week of lockdown, people reported bouts of loneliness and a deep need for togetherness.

You don’t miss something until its gone. Life without a trip to the pub; a night of laughter at with friends; tears at the cinema or the thrill of live music; an afternoon at the football; a quick drink or a long meal; a few hours with your parents or your children; or even just a hug. Even shaking hands became a novelty.

The pandemic took away many lives, but it also reminded us what life is for: the simple joy of being with other people, close enough to touch and be touched. The microscope placed over each one of us, revealed that our greatest weakness is also our most precious strength: our need for each other.

▶ 250g chocolate ripple biscuits ▶ 80g butter, melted ▶ 300ml cream, lightly whipped ▶500g cream cheese, softened ▶ 1/2 cup caster sugar ▶ 150ml Baileys liquor ▶ 3 tsp gelatine dissolved in ¼ cup water ▶ 200g white chocolate, melted and cooled ▶ 150g Maltesers - plus extra to decorate

Method

1. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm spring-form pan.

2. Finely crush the biscuits in a food processor and place into a bowl.

3. Add the melted butter and mix until well combined.

4. Press the mixture firmly into the base of the pan and place into the fridge.

5. Whip cream and set aside and dissolve gelatine in water.

6. Beat the cream cheese, caster sugar and Baileys together until smooth and creamy and add the cooled, dissolved gelatine to the mix and beat until well combined.

7. Melt the white chocolate and set aside to cool.

8. Beat the melted chocolate and the whipped cream through the cream cheese mixture. Fold through the Maltesers.

9. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin. Spread out evenly with a spoon.

10. Place into the fridge for 15 minutes.

11. Lightly press the extra Maltesers into the top of the cheesecake to decorate.

CHAMPION: Sarah Foster an Atherton local and Australia’s Number one female trail runner is looking ahead to the massive 1,049km Triple Crown race in America next year.

Foster set to tackle her hardest challenge SARAH Foster, an Atherton local and Australia’s number one female trail runner has set herself the gruelling goal of being the first Australian female to conquer the Triple Crown, a massive 1,049km race set in America.

Broken down into three separate 200 mile trail running courses, The Bigfoot 200, Tahoe 200 and the Moab 240 are three massive trail running races that will run over August, September and October in 2021.

Sarah is hoping to travel to America next year to see how she really stacks up against some of the best of the best in trail running.

She is no beginner however, as she is the current record holder for Australia’s premier 200mile race, Delirious W.E.S.T where she placed as the first female and third overall.

“Trail running is not such a huge thing in Australia especially ultra-running, it’s getting there but it’s not on par with America by far,” Sarah said.

“I raced in Delirious in February this year and I feel like I want to see how good I can be, I want to go to America and compete against the best to see how

I stack up.

“I’m pretty excited but I think the first race is going to be by far the toughest on my body due to the hills and huge elevation gains.”

Currently Sarah’s training week consists of running over 100km each week before ramping up the kilometres heading into the competition.

The Triple Crown only allows around 20-25 days of rest in-between each 200 mile race, making it a true test of a runner’s physical and mental endurance.

If International travel to America is not allowed by the time the race comes around Sarah has set herself another goal of participating in a 48hr track event to train her mind to deal with the long distance running.

“I feel like that track event would be mind numbing enough to train my mind to just be quiet and run,” she said.

“That’s going to be a real mental challenge and that’s what I am looking for to see how I will get through that.

“It’s also good training for the 200-mile races because when things start to hurt you start thinking about hot showers and warm beds.”

Turf Club set to come alive on Boxing Day THE Mareeba Turf Club is once again hosting their biggest race day of the year, the Boxing Day Races this coming Saturday, December 26.

The Boxing Day Races are the biggest event of the year for the Mareeba Turf Club with thousands of people flocking to the track on the day.

This year’s event will be a five race card with a special foot race to be held after the official races have finished.

Mareeba Turf Club President Alex Malliff is excited for this year’s race and is encouraging those who haven’t booked their tickets to do so.

“I love the Boxing Day Races it’s my favourite day of racing in the year it’s such a super atmosphere,” he said.

“Everybody that comes there comes back, you don’t go to the Boxing Day Races in Mareeba and say I’ve done that, I won’t come back.

“Come and see it for yourself your always left wanting more after the Boxing Day Races.”

Live music, food, drinks and even a jumping castle and a possible waterslide will be available this year to help cool off some of that summer heat.

Tickets for the Boxing Day Races cannot be purchased at the gate this year as all tickets are now required to be pre-purchased before arriving on the race day.

Atherton holds onto CFN lead

ATHERTON’S first grade side will go in to the Christmas break just holding on to their lead in the Cricket Far North competition after being convincingly beaten by Barron River on Saturday.

Barron chose to bat first, batting through to the 49th over to post a total of 162. Wickets were shared between Michael Salerno 3-42, Jason Salvetti 2-11, Paul Nasser 2-18, Liam Bombardieri 2-22 and Tom Boorman 1-25.

MAREEBA Seconds were unable to continue on from their win last weekend, going down against United in Cairns on Sunday.

The toss was won by the home side and Mareeba was sent in to bat, the order never looked steady with all batters not able to get into a rhythm, Mareeba was bowled out for 102 off just 28.2 overs.

United then made quick work of the Mareeba bowlers with one of their openers just seven runs off a half century.

Wickets then fell quickly but not quickly enough as the home side passed Mareeba’s score in the 30th over with only six wickets down.
