Artist leaves his mark on region AFTER taking to Facebook to promote his artwork and possibly grab a commission or two, artist Martin Andrés Gómez Mercado from Chile, was completely inundated with requests from locals to do murals, tattoos, canvases and more – a response he was not expecting.

Martin initially travelled to Australia from New Zealand after he was invited to participate in a street art festival in Brisbane and is now in the process of completing his 88 days of his working holiday visa.

Mareeba is famous in backpacking circles so it was an obvious choice for Martin to spend some time working and living in the region.

He was even invited to present some of

his work at the recent Orin Aya festival at Rossville, 300km north of Cairns.

Martin has always been artistic but took it seriously when he was 15 years old, he started as a graffiti artist before moving to other areas of art.

“Painting is always a puzzle, you never know how it is going to come up until you gather all the pieces,” he said.

“As an artist everyplace, you paint works to showcase your art, so in that case coming from New Zealand and getting invited from another country was amazing.”

He took to the Mareeba Community Noticeboard to promote his art and see if anyone was interested in commissioning him.

Martin was completely swamped with

requests with around 30 people messaging him asking to do some art, either a mural or a painting for them.

“I never expected that not at all, I was imagining there were going to be around three people contacting me,” he said.

“It is always nice when things like that happen and you get that kind of reach with one post, photo, mural, painting or even one event, it helps your career “It is great to get in touch with local communities as well, when you go to a new place it is always nice to be able to contribute in a way.”

Martin is currently in the process of doing two murals, one in Cairns and another on a local farm in Mareeba.

Sugar hit hard by lack of drivers

Up to 20 per cent of cane destined for the Mossman Sugar Mill could remain in the ground and unharvested as the mill suffers from a crippling truck driver shortage.

With the local sugar cane season well underway, the mill has been locked in a battle to get and retain drivers to haul sugar cane, with many drivers instead choosing to work on mine sites across the State.

By comparison, the Tableland Mill overseen by MSF Sugar has managed to retain 98 per cent of their drivers by offering well above award wages however many growers on the Tablelands transport their cane down to Mossman to be processed.

The Mossman Mill is managed by Far Northern Milling and outsource their haulage to Logitrix Management Service while Cube Logistics is contracted for the Tableland Sugar Mill.

Bronwyn Dwyer said if they were unable to find drivers, they could face significant losses which could have dire consequences on the mill’s viability.

“Due to the critical driver shortage and predicted wet weather conditions over the coming months, there is a high probability of standover cane, which could see 10-20 per cent of the crop remaining in the paddock unharvested,” Ms Dwyer said.

“Effectively, two years’ worth of income for the growers will be lost, not only will this severely impact the growers’ bottom line, but that cane doesn’t go through the mill either and so the Mossman Mill, that’s already doing it tough, loses substantial income.”

Far Northern Milling is the second largest employer in the Douglas Shire, with 150 full-time employees during the season and 570 external seasonal jobs.

manages the transport and logistics for the fleet and he has recently lost two drivers to the lucrative mining sector.

“We need 10 drivers immediately and another 30 in the coming months,” he said.

“We are competing with the mining sector and we need urgent help to fill these empty seats, the trucks can’t sit in idle for long, because once the weather sets in, that’s it for the season.

“The clock is well and truly ticking.

“Finding truck drivers to get this crop off is critical not only for our industry but for prosperity of our whole community.”

Cube Logistics Tableland Mill site manager Ty Bensilum said he experienced trouble getting drivers for the Tableland Mill in the beginning of the season but nothing that would impact its production.

He says Cube Logistics managed to retain 98 per cent of its drivers and continue operating as per normal by offering well above award wages.

“We have had a few drivers come and go but we have maintained about 98 per cent of our drivers,” he said.

“When we get into the end of October, start of November, we run into issues losing drivers because it is seasonal work so they may start looking for alternative work to go to before they finish with the mill.”

Kennedy MP Bob Katter recently submitted a report detailing the critical labour shortages affecting his electorate and provided numerous recommendations to address it.

“We have come to the conclusion that if we aren’t able to get a workforce in Australia to do these essential jobs, then we will enter into discussions with Government to get migrants in to do the jobs,” he said.

“Conversations have been held with the Minister for Employment and will continue until we can get a fair go for our regional, rural and remote areas.”

Shire moves ahead with developments

TWO development applications involving the expansion of a nursing home at Julatten and a new horse-riding school near Mareeba, will be decided by Mareeba Shire Council when they meet on Wednesday.

The application to increase the capacity of the Mt Kooyong Nursing Home near Julatten involves demolishing two of the buildings on site to allow for two new buildings which will accommodate an additional 12 units for elderly people, a nurse’s station, two communal areas and storage areas.

Another application to be decided this week, is a proposal to establish a horse riding and equestrian school near Mareeba which would also offer horse agistment services.

The proposal, submitted by Meraki EC Pty Ltd, is for a site on the Kennedy Highway and, if approved, would allow the owners to provide horse

agistment services for 20 horses on seven paddocks on the property. It is also proposing to establish a horse-riding and equestrian school which would involve a new outdoor arena and an indoor arena.

If approved, the school would operate up to six days a week and would involve a maximum of 20 clients per day.

Meanwhile, Mareeba Shire Council has approved a controversial development at Warril Drive, Kuranda. The development involves a parcel of rainforest near Kuranda which will be transformed into five residential blocks which had some has locals up in arms at the thought that trees and native wildlife will be sacrificed as a result.

The development was code assessable which meant locals could not put in a submission objecting to the project. Council approved the development with a raft of conditions.

Mural highlights town’s bird A MOSACIC mural showcasing Mount Molloy’s “rascal bird” will be officially opened to the community today, Wednesday 21 September.

Beginning the project in 2016, the mural depicts the Great Bowerbird’s antics and his prowess as he collects his trinkets.

Much like the bowerbird, the mosaic is made from a collection of mainly old tiles and bits of clay combined together to create the piece.

The six-metre-long mural is situated on the old post office veranda and is visible to those passing through the town from the Main Street.

Original composer of the mural, Caroline Lieber, says she is excited to see the piece completed in the main street and hopes it attracts more passerbys and bird watchers to the town.

“The project took many years to complete but we are thrilled to see it finally up in the town,” she said.

Petition to save park

A PETITION is now circulating in a bid to make Tablelands Regional Council change its mind about a proposal to sell off an Atherton park.

The petition, which has been signed by 387 people to date, has been launched by Rena Ceola, the daughter of 95-year-old Antonia Peluchetti who has lived across the road from the park, bordered by Pink Street and Maunds Road, since her and her husband purchased two blocks there 50 years ago.

The council is investigating whether to sell off the suburban park so it can be developed into medium to high density housing.

In a letter to Mayor Rod Marti and councillors, Mrs Ceola said the sell-off proposal had her mother in “absolute distress”.

“Our parents were the first to build on this development, purchasing two blocks in Pink Street – why they chose the blocks?

Because of the parkland opposite it,” she wrote.

“This planned medium to high density accommodation would change the whole lifestyle of those living around it and in particular, our Mum.” Mrs Ceola said she understood there was a housing crisis and it needed to be resolved but could not understand why land outside of the town could not be used.

“Why change a park – a park which probably was gifted to council as part of the redevelopment of the area by the developers. This land was intended to be used as parklands, what right does council have to sell it off?” she wrote.

“If indeed council wants higher density

housing in the area, then it is clear that the people who live in that higher density housing will need green space, somewhere for their kids to play, and somewhere where they can just escape the built environment.

“It has been proven over and over that high density housing cannot exist without the residents needing parks and open spaces nearby, yet council intends to use an existing park to create the very problem that many high-density communities are grappling with.

“What happens in the future when the high-density housing is created, and then council decides that they need a park nearby?

“I am simply astounded by the shortsightedness of changing a park into high density living, instead of changing a lowdensity house into a high-density residence and retaining the park.”

Mrs Ceola said instead of trying to sell the park off, the council should be concentrating on building up the park to make it more attractive for families to use like installing barbecues and play equipment instead of “tearing out any play equipment left in the park”.

The petition has attracted many comments from those who have already signed it, echoing Mrs Ceola’s views “This space is certainly not ideal for medium to high density housing! As the TRC is planning to sell this park: what is the plan after the sale? Developers buy up and as they self-certify their own buildings with some dubious methods employed in the buildings – we don't need ghetto style living in that area across from schools and kindergartens. TRC should be more com-

munity minded and upgrade this park location for family uses and play equipment,” one man wrote.

“I strongly believe this type of housing is not welcome on the Tablelands. It’s the one thing that makes the Tablelands and Atherton so nice,” one woman said.

“Parklands are more valuable in our community than dense housing. Keep the Tablelands beautiful,” another said.

“Parks need to be preserved for future generations not sold for financial gain. Existing council will not always be the caretakers,” was another comment.

“Urban and suburban areas need parklands for recreation so kids can practice sport, play, have birthday parties etc. Adults exercise there and locals meet which brings the neighbourhood together. Where else can people go to have shared space? Community needs parklands,” one person wrote.

“We need parks and this one needs some love it’s seen by everyone driving through out beautiful town but we definitely need more homes built – just need to find a better spot,” one woman said.

Live chicken causes stir at hospital AN argument over bringing a live caged chicken into the Atherton Hospital has resulted in the arrest of a 54-year-old Mt Garnet woman.

The woman was visiting a person at the hospital on Sunday 11 September when she was asked by staff to remove the chicken from the premises.

Police allege the woman became aggressive towards a staff member grabbing her by the arm causing bruising, then hit the person to the back of the head before being restrained by other staff members and then arrested by police.

The woman is expected to appear in the Atherton Magistrates Court on 12 October, charged with serious assault of a public officer performing a function causing bodily harm.

Police have also charged a man after an incident in Herberton on 9 September when he allegedly became aggressive towards a bar manager after being asked to leave another patron alone.

The man refused to leave the premises and was physically removed by the manager before he tried to fight him.

Police also allege the man then entered the yard of a police residence before being escorted back towards the licensed premises to retrieve personal belongings. The man has then allegedly tried to enter the premises again before being arrested by police.

The 50-year-old Barrine man is expected to appear in the Atherton Magistrates Court on 27 September. Police also charged a Peeramon man after arresting him following an incident during which he allegedly armed himself with a knife when police approached him.

On 10 September, police were called after reports of a vehicle driving erratically in the area and causing property damage. Police located the vehicle abandoned on a mound of dirt near HerbertonPetford Road, with the man in a nearby caravan causing damage.

As police approached, he allegedly exited the caravan armed with a knife. The 30-year-old Peeramon man was charged with drink driving, driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle, driving unlicensed and threatening violence.

Fernwren future focus of free talk ONE of the mysterious and ancient birds of high-altitude rainforests in northern Queensland will be the focus of free wildlife talk at Malanda on Thursday.

The secretive Fernwren is an endemic Wet Tropics species increasingly confined to high elevations such as Mt Lewis.

The only species in its genus, the Latin name means “mountain watcher” and it is one of the scrub-wren or warbler group of Australian birds.

Because it spends most of its time on or near the forest floor, usually in dense rainforest gullies and slopes, it is more often heard than seen.

Long-running studies have shown a decline in abundance at lower altitudes and these studies have led to grave concerns for its future.

In the Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020, it was listed as Endangered and unfortunately this long-running population study ceased to be funded in 2016. The National and State status of this species is “least concern” and there is no recovery plan or conservation advice.

The question to be posed at the free talk at Malanda Hotel on Thursday is: “Is this an example of the rapidity with which climate change can impact some species?”

Dr John Grant has been studying the Fernwren for many years and at Thursday’s presentation, he will impart new knowledge about this marvellous bird and addresses the question of why it might be threatened and its future outlook.

Despite its significance as one of the World Heritage endemics, little is known about the species.

Past students return to Herberton

A JAM-packed three days of excitement awaits former students attending the Herberton Methodist Hostel and Woodleigh College reunion which kicks off this Friday.

Woodleigh College and the Methodist hostel hosted many students during their schooling years, most coming to Herberton from rural Queensland, Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait Islands.

An estimated 200 people who either attended Herberton State School or boarded at the hostel or the college will return to Herberton from 23-25 September to celebrate the old days and relive all the memories of their schooling days.

Festivities will kick off on Friday with a golf day from 6.30am at the Atherton Golf Club.

Keen players can contact the golf club for nominations on 4091 1283.

At midday, Wild River Distillery will be doing a tasting at the Royal Hotel, with special reunion gin and tonics and special reunion bottles of gin available to purchase throughout the day.

The reunion will be officially kick off from 4.30pm with a Welcome to Country at the front of Woodleigh College, now called Wicking House, and a meet and greet downtown from 6pm.

A ball at the Herberton Old Shire Hall will of-

fer attendees a night of dancing and singing to local band Kick Start and a chance to catch up with old classmates. Tickets are $20 each (cash only) and entry is at the side entrance on the night.

Saturday morning from 8.30am will be a special World War II tour by John Hardy OAM, heading out to significant historical sites in Wondecla and surrounding areas.

The tour will go for four hours, leaving from Mount St Bernard’s Catholic College with tickets to be purchased at the Atherton Information Centre.

A second ball will be held from 7.30pm at the Herberton Hall with country music played by Kurdaz Country Band. Entry and price will be the same as night before.

A farewell recovery breakfast will start off Sunday morning at the Herberton Bowls Club from 9.30am hosted by the Lions Club.

Organisers of the event will also be selling reunion mugs. All money left over from the mugs and from the dances will be divided and donated to a variety of community and charity groups in Herberton.

Reduced funding for road maintenace

TABLELANDS Regional Council has refused to sign a two-year contract for maintenance of State roads after the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) reduced the funds in the second year of the agreement by 15 per cent.

After some discussion, the council agreed to a 12-month contract for 2022-23 even though the funds available for maintenance remain unchanged from last year despite the rise in costs of materials and labour.

Deputy Mayor Cr Kevin Cardew spoke strongly against signing any agreement with the department, saying he was “getting a little tired of the State Government putting imposts on local government to do certain things for them without much consideration” for the council involved.

“When they do substandard works on the main roads and we have to maintain them, we cop the flak,” he said.

“If they make mistakes, they say, ‘oops sorry’

and move on.

“If we don’t accept this (the contract), I have no dramas with that – I think there’s an opportunity to move the staff that may be impacted by this to other areas of our operational budget.

“The State is dictating terms and if you look at the amount for the following year, it is reduced – all the cost blowouts in materials fuel etc don’t seem to be taken into consideration.”

The DTMR contract for 2022-23 provides for $2.25 million, but for 2023-24, the department wanted the council to sign off on the reduced amount of $1.92 million.

“Officers expressed that a reduction in service on State-controlled roads as a result of maintenance and a future reduction of funding for the Routine Maintenance Performance Contract would not be accepted by council,” a report to council stated.

DTMR had explained that the contract values had not increased from the previous year because of the removal of work related to reseal prepa-

ration works from the contract, which had been moved to another program and would be offered to the council under a separate contract.

Infrastructure Services general manager Mark Vis told council DTMR had made it clear that allocations for this year and next year were fixed.

“They are not going to change,” he said.

He also cautioned council about not signing the contract and redeploying workers to other projects, saying there were impacts to consider, such as consulting with the workforce and relevant unions.

He did not believe that council opting to sign a one-year contract and withholding the second year would lead to a positive change in the funding for the second year.

“Our ability to negotiate a higher amount for the second year is very slim,” Mr Vis said.

Cr Cardew said while he understood all the points put to the meeting, he remained firm council should stand up and be counted on the issue.

Pools need staff to stay afloat POOLS across the Mareeba Shire are experiencing a crippling staff shortage that could affect their ability to open and provide locals a release from the hot Australian summer.

Keelwater Pty Ltd secured the leases for the Mareeba, Dimbulah and Kuranda pools last year in August from long-time lessee June Cotter and begun operating last September.

Staff have been actively sought to fill positions at each pool with little to no luck, the Mareeba pool nearly had to close due to a lack of staff.

A recent recruitment drive secured more staff and managed to keep the pool open, however more are needed for Mareeba as well as for both the Kuranda and Dimbulah pools.

Keelwater Director Jason Salecich said without the necessary staff to help run day-to-day operations, the pools will be forced to restrict their operating hours.

“We are probably two staff short in every space and then you’ve got Mareeba which will have a splash park

which we would like to think will significantly increase trade which means more demand,” he said.

“We are even providing the training free of charge and everything but they have to be willing to do that training.

“We are even looking for people just to operate the kiosk because they don’t have to be fully certified, that would allow us to use lifeguards for what they should be doing, supervising the pool instead of doing both.”

Mr Salecich is imploring people to put their hand up to work at any of the pools.

“Pools are a great place to work, early mornings and in the evenings,” he said.

“The work is not labour intensive, there is a customer focus and all of the training will be provided so you will get trained and get that qualification.

“There is a level of responsibility that comes with the job and that is keeping all of our community users safe.”

“We will just continue to take what is given to us by the State – prices are going up, their contract rates are coming down.

“If we take a stand, it might hurt for a while but by golly, if we take a stand, it will be noticed and other councils may make a stand. If you want something changed, you’re got to put your head up to change it.”

Cr David Clifton said he wanted the Mayor and CEO to raise the matter formally through the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC) in a bid to come up with a “collective stance” in relation to the funding.

“The day-to-day reality is that the people who get screwed is the council on the one hand, and the contractors, all local people, on the other – we have to try and screw them down when every input they have is subject to the same kind of pressures we’re subject to,” he said.

Mareeba pool manager Lynette Koina has been running the Mareeba Pool on a skeleton crew with new members sorely needed for the Mareeba, Dimbulah and Kuranda Pools.

TRIBUTES are flowing for long-serving former Councillor Fred Cattarossi who passed away last week.

Mr Cattarossi served on Mareeba Shire Council for 34 consecutive years from 1973 to 2007. He was heavily involved in community and sporting organisations and a charter member of the Dimbulah Lions Club.

“On behalf of Mareeba Shire Council, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Fred’s family members and friends,” Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said.

“Fred’s legacy lives on in many areas throughout our shire and most visibly in the bridge named after him.

“He advocated for an improved bridge on Leadingham Creek crossing in Dimbulah for many years as he was aware of the hardship placed on local farmers during the wet season. A more floodresilient crossing was built in 2014.

“As Mayor, I acknowledge his life of service. He made an immense contribution to our shire and residents will reap the benefits of his dedication for years to come,” she added.

Youth encouraged to have their say in strategic plan YOUNG people aged between 15-25 are being encouraged to complete an online survey to inform Tableland Regional Council’s Youth Advisory Committee as they conduct a midway review of its Youth Strategic Plan.

The survey seeks to find out how young people feel about living on the Tablelands, asking questions about whether they feel socially connected through events like theatre and music, whether they feel part of the community through activities like volunteering and whether they feel they have adequate opportunities to develop through training, higher education and work opportunities.

The survey also asks whether youth know where and how to access services for their health

and wellbeing, whether they are able to access everything they need in the region, and what makes the Tablelands a great place for youth.

Participants also can tell the committee what they believe are the challenges for young people living in the region and what are the three things they think would make the Tablelands a better place for youth.

People who fill out the survey are in the running to win one of three $100 gift certificates.

Council debates costly IT contract

NEARLY half a million dollars will be paid to an information technology company to maintain Tablelands Regional Council’s computer network and systems for the next 12 months but not before some councillors questioned why the work could not be done in-house.

Council eventually agreed to the contract, with Cr Peter Hodge and Deputy Mayor Cr Kevin Cardew voting against the motion amidst concerns such a large amount of money would be paid to a company outside of the region and high annual costs would continue indefinitely.

“It’s an extraordinary amount of money, almost a half a million dollars and to put it in perspective we probably don’t spend that slashing roads,” Cr Hodge said.

The contract was awarded to Roberts and Morrow Technology (RMT) which has a head office in Armidale, NSW and other offices in Maitland,

NSW and in Townsville.

“If we’re going to send $455,000, I would like to see it done in-house so that those salaries are spent in our region,” Cr Hodge said.

Cr David Clifton said while he recognised that RMT was proving council good value for money, he noted there was also $80,000 a year budgeted for the ongoing replacement of hardware on a 3-4 year basis that had to be added to the $455,000 RMT would receive.

“Is this going to be a continuing impost for us?

For how long? Forever?” he asked.

“Yes, as long as we have IT, there are ongoing costs,” replied council’s systems and information manager Amanda Henderson.

“The arrangement and the services provided by RMT basically covers the maintenance and support of our entire IT network,” she said.

“That is everything that runs our IT across council, also our connectivity and maintenance and support of IT in our depots, transfer stations and our

sewerage plants.

“They do ongoing maintenance for that, and also assist us in doing ongoing improvement programs, monitor all our servers, our hardware, do rectification works, proactive patches, keep our security in check and do all the updates required to make everything run.”

She said the three IT staff employed by council “look after things on the ground that can’t be done remotely – pretty much everything else is done by RMT”.

“We have talked about the option of potentially doing it inhouse – one of the challenges we have seen in the past with that arrangement is having the skills required for the breadth of the services we have to cover,” Ms Henderson said.

“In a small council, containing that within three resources is challenging. By using RMT, we are tapping into about 30 experts in their field which provides us that extra level of service that would be a challenge to find within an extra couple of re-

sources to have that service done internally.”

Cr Hodge said while he understood her argument, he was still in favour of bringing the service in-house which would have the added bonus of upskilling local people.

But chief executive officer Gary Rinehart explained there were risks with taking that path.

“Were we to seek to do this in-house, there is a risk of gaps in that service for periods of time when people resign and move on,” he said.

“IT is one of the areas where again, as a nation, we have been under-investing and we now find ourselves with labour shortages in that space so it’s not unreasonable that there would be turnover and each time there is turnover, that risk sits with us.”

Mayor Rod Marti acknowledged that while it was a “a lot of money”, it would provide council with access to 20-30 IT experts.

“It’s a lot of money but we are providing critical services to the community and we need to make sure our systems don’t routinely fail.”

THERE was standing room only when Malanda school girl, Abbey Wilson, supported by her local and artistic community, staged her first ever art exhibition at “Sprout to Life” last Thursday night.

Born in Wollongong, NSW, Abbey and her family moved to Malanda 13 years ago when she was three years old. As a home school student, Abbey enjoys exploring and painting some of the beautiful bush scenes on her creek-side family farm.

Painting sometimes from photos and sometimes directly from nature, Abbey said she works regularly from “At the Art Garage” in Yungaburra, creating unique water-colour artworks of Australian natives and other botanicals.

“My first experiences of art were painting alongside my older sister Katie, who encouraged me and allowed me to use her expensive art supplies. Being in Kate's studio, got me thinking creatively,” Abbey said.

“From doodling on my school books, I went on to develop my painting skills. My dream is to become a full-time artist, and by following my love of painting, capture the beauty of Australia in the process.”

Queen of the chutes Dianne Luppi is happiest when she is on the back of a bull or horse, dedicating her life to the adrenaline rush she gets at every rodeo. With a new book inspired by her life being recently published, ELLIE FINK spoke with Dianne to learn about the adversity she faced and how she overcame it…

ADRENALINE junky and fearless fighter, Dianne Luppi (nee Lucas) rode beasts triple her size at rodeos across the country in the 1970s by pretending to be a male to compete in the sport she loved most, whilst battling a rare illness.

Her incredible life has recently been documented and turned into a novel by local author Frances Dall’Alba, telling Dianne’s story through her main character Grace.

Dianne was born in Mount Gambier and travelled across the country to live in mining towns for her father’s work and fell in love with country living.

In one of their many moves, Dianne found herself in Perth falling in love with the many horses she would meet, wishing nothing more than to have one of her own.

School didn’t come easy to Dianne as she struggled with dyslexia, and she would often “wag school” to ride a horse she was gifted.

“His name was Megaton. I had no saddle or bridle, and I just rode him with a rope hobble strap around his neck,” she said.

“I used to walk five miles just to be near horses whether it was burning hot, raining or hailing just in the hope that if I cleaned people’s gear and stables that they would give me a ride. That was before Megaton was given to me.

“He was an ugly horse with a big Roman nose, long body and short legs, but he was fantastic to ride and would go from a gallop to sliding stop with just pressure on the rope.”

Dianne was always sick in her younger years and soon learned she had a rare liver condition, making her allergic to pain killers and preventing from ever consuming a drop of alcohol in her lifetime.

The condition is something that she has struggled with every day, coping with constant pain since she was a child. Today, she drives from her home in Malanda to the Cairns Private Hospital up to three times a week for dialysis.

But when she was a young girl, her overwhelming desire was always horses so to get closer to the animals, Dianne began working at a poultry farm. Whilst working there she met Liz Johnson, who would take her to rodeos in the area.

That was when Dianne’s need for adrenaline began to really emerge, finding herself at bull and bronc rides whenever she could wishing she was the one on the back of the dangerous beasts.

At this time, the Australia Professional Rodeo Association’s (APRA) rules stated that women were not allowed to compete but in 1966, Liz entered 12-year-old Dianne in her first poddy calf ride pretending to be a boy.

With her short hair and slender figure, pretending to be a male came easy and she dominated the arena and took out first place.

“I ended up winning and once they found out I was a girl they didn’t want to give me the first prize which was a trophy western saddle about eight inches high,” she said.

“That got me hooked – seeing the bulls being bucked out was the most thrilling thing I ever saw.”

Determined to get back on the back of a bull, 16-year-old Dianne found herself in the chutes at the Riverland Corral Rodeo in Mandurah, Western Australia pretending to be a man.

She rode the full eight seconds on the back of a steer and on the back of a huge buck jumper which gave her a “rough ride”.

“Being long and lean, people mistakenly took me for a boy every time so I decided that I would join the APRA under the name of Deat Lucas which I managed to get away with for a few rodeos,” she said.

“I made time more than I bucked off but after being discovered as a girl, I was once again not allowed to compete.”

No longer allowed back in the chutes, 19-year-old Dianne decided to settle down and marry twice and have two kids.

After some rough years in an abusive marriage, Dianne moved with her two children up to Cairns with three suitcases and $600 to her name.

She began rodeoing again in Mareeba, taking a pair of jeans and boots from a fellow cowboy to compete as Deat once again and was only a second short of time.

In this time, she met the love of her life, Peter Luppi, who supported her and her children through thick and thin.

A few years later, she felt the urge to go back to her love of bull-riding and took the opportunity to enter the Mt Garnet Rodeo, keen to show the crowd what a woman could do.

“Because the anti-discrimination laws had come in, I was allowed to ride in the open bull ride on contract bulls.

“To me, it was the most exciting thing I could do and had a passion for it, and I continued to compete at several rodeos when the chance arose.

“My last time bull riding was The Caves Rodeo Bicentennial in 1988 – that was going to be my last rodeo as I was 34. The day before the rodeo I knew I had to give it away before I was hurt. The kids were there cheering me on.”

In 2016, her sickness grew worse and she had her first spinal fusion on her lower back and was put in the intensive care unit and operated on two days later where they discovered a perforated bowel.

That operation put her into a 25-day induced coma, 71 days on life support, 80 back in the ICU to administer antibiotics to control sepsis caused by kidney failure and double pneumonia and several weeks of rehabilitation to learn to eat, walk and talk again.

“Since then, I have undergone dialysis for 15 months, a neck fusion during an eight-and-a-half-hour surgery where my blood pressure dropped dramatically and put my body into shock,” she said.

“My kidneys were working at 10 per cent so my specialist, Professor Rob Fassett, said they would try me off dialysis for a few days and see how I went.”

Dianne managed to spend four and a half years off dialysis, feeling healthy and fit until her kidney function decreased again to three per cent, becoming sicker than ever.

Unfortunately, at age 68, Dianne is

Her main character Grace, which is Dianne’s actual first name is a witty, fierce and determined woman who overcomes diversity to make her way to the top spot.

As a woman, Grace is underestimated by the men in the ring, winning her first poddy calf ride at 12 but being refused the trophy because of her gender.

Grace and Dianne’s stories share many similarities and Frances hopes that through her book, she may be able to give Dianne the credit she truly deserves.

“I end the Author Note hoping that the reader is left inspired, and to always live life to the fullest. Dianne has gone through so much adversity

“I had to sell my horses as I was too sick to do anything with them,” she said.

“Not sure how the story ends as I am being taken off the kidney transplant list but my life has been an adventure with lots of highs and lows.

“My son Colin passed away from

leukaemia when he was 25 in 2006, my daughter Natalie works at the 24-hour Emergency Vet Clinic in Cairns as head nurse.

“Her and my grandchildren, Sunny and Jada Grace Mawer, are my pride and joy, and they keep me going. Peter is a wonderful husband and takes really good care of me.

“So, no matter how the story ends I have had a full life that I’m happy with.”

“We have a lot of incredible women in Australia, but I kept getting stuck on this one woman, because what she achieved, she'd done in Mt Garnet. As this was in the north, it was a place I could relate to and I couldn't seem to let it go,” Frances said.

“Naturally, when I found her living barely 10 minutes away from me, there was no turning back. And yet, I had never heard of her, had no idea of her achievements, and knew absolutely nothing about her.

“But she has an incredible story that I could have easily filled three

ENTERTAINMENT Clapton ready to crank it up at Savannah in the Round festival ONE of Australia’s foremost singer songwriters will take the stage at this year’s Savannah in the Round music festival this October.

Richard Clapton grew up in Sydney in the 1960s before hopping on a plane headed for London and then later to Germany where he wrote his first album, Prussian Blue in 1973.

Likening his style to those of American legends Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, Clapton developed a sound based on melodic rock while his lyrics were poetic musings on his state of mind or the state of the nation.

Clapton released many highly acclaimed hits including, Girls On The Avenue, Capricorn Dancer, Deep Water, I Am An Island among others.

He was a mentor to the younger artists like Jimmy Barnes, INXS and Cold Chisel, in 1981 INXS had him produce their second album, Underneath the Colours.

Since his first album release in 1973, Clapton has released over 20 albums and sold over one million copies.

Chopper pilot contributes chapter to northern history

BY SALLY TURLEY THEY exist in every walk of life – the one that all the industry's best look up to – the legend's legend.

In the northern Australian aviation sector, Mareeba’s Barry Dick is that man. Admired and respected by all who have known him, his life deserves recognition, but is far too big to be captured in a newspaper article.

Born and raised in Port Macquarie, the son of an oyster farmer, Barry launched himself into a life so large that its events were eventually to have a significant impact on many aspects of the North Queensland way of life.

Following a distinguished aviation career, he established the north's first helicopter flying school in Mareeba in 1988 and went on to train, endorse or review almost every northern pilot, working both in and out of the cattle industry.

Local legends like Terry Black, Danny Bird, Bunjie Scott, Kenny Simms, Brian and Colin Hughes, Gerry Wheedon, Mike Tully and Ken and Chris Atkinson came to the Mareeba flying school to qualify as pilots, have their licence endorsed or, in the case of Terry Black, work as an instructor at the school.

Brought up in a family of sailors, Barry knew from an early age, that while he loved the ocean, he dreamed of mastering a different medium. At 16 years of age, he joined the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) with a plan to become a pilot.

The Air Force assured Barry the best way to learn to fly was by first completing his apprenticeship as an aircraft engineer, so he could better understand the planes he would later command.

He graduated as an Aeronautical Engineer in Wagga Wagga in 1961, before doing detachments to Borneo, Thailand and Singapore servicing planes from his base in Malaysia, where he first met life-long friend and “father of the helicopter mustering industry”, Rex Budd.

cuses later, the Air Force looked no closer to putting Barry inside a plane, so he switched track to the Army who, ironically, put him back through the Air Force's flying school for a couple of years training before he served as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. His posting, as a reconnaissance pilot flying under enemy fire in a team of 12, two of whom would not make it out alive, put him back in touch with friend, Rex Budd, gunship commander and the first pilot to reach 1000 flying hours over two tours of duty in Vietnam.

Mr Budd returned to Australia in the early 1970s and started helicopter mustering cattle at Wrotham Park's outstation, Gamboola, which was under the management of Kay and Gary Dollard.

In the meantime, Barry Dick, also returned home and experienced his first association with North Queensland as part of the Army Survey Corp, spending six months ferrying their mapmaking team around the remote cattle stations of the Peninsula.

Starting out at Cooktown, he visited many properties, including the 2300 square km “Rutland Plains” Station in the Gulf of Carpentaria, before running into Rex Budd again at Gamboola and going chopper mustering with him there in 1974.

“He was poetry in motion,” Barry said.

After serving with the Survey Corp in New Guinea, Barry did a stint with the Accident Investigation Unit, before leaving the Army in 1980 and spending four years flying charter flights above the Tropic of Capricorn from Rockhampton across to Alice Springs and north to Darwin for Air Mt Isa. Barry gained his mustering endorsement on one of Australia's largest cattle stations, the 12,212 sq km “Brunette Downs” with trainer, John Hall, before setting up a flying school for Air Mt Isa, doing the bulk of the training during his “down time” in the wet season.

Barry's next challenge was working for the first company in Australia to fly marine pilots, usually in a challenging night IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) operating environment, from Hamilton Island out to the Hydrographers Passage boarding ground, around 200km off the coast of Mackay.

This initiative was a game-changer for ships that had previously sailed south to Rockhampton to circumnavigate the Barrier Reef, at the cost of around $10,000 a day. For almost five years, Barry delivered specialist mariners onto ships to manoeuvre them through difficult channels in the reef.

Then it was stints of volunteering as a North Queensland rescue helicopter pilot, commercial charter work, flying groups of 10 passengers in Bell 212 and 412 helicopters into mining camps in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor and flying coast watch operations out of Thursday Island, Gove and Darwin, before per-

Barry said while he enjoyed “popping up and having a look around” all over the country, he had also been looking around Australia for a good place to settle down and make his next project idea a reality.

“I knew I was finally ready to set up my own school and Mareeba had the ideal climate, with plenty of fine flying days, it had good facilities and was located in the middle of the far northern cattle industry,” he said.

“I opened Queensland's second chopper training school, the Mareeba Helicopter Flying School, in 1988 and began training a mixture of local clients, many from nearby cattle stations, and others that came from all over Australia and even New Caledonia.”

That client list included names like Australian cattle king, Peter Sherwin, at one point the largest landowner in the nation, who trained with him for a while on Brunchilly Station in the Northern Territory.

“The bush people were lovely to work with and most of the pilots I trained, have stayed a long time in the industry. I will always remember how excited all my students were to get through their training. It has been wonderful and I wouldn't swap any of it,” Barry said.

“But you can't fly 20,000 hours without a few incidents along the way. I remember dropping 100 feet through the New Guinea forest canopy in a freight-filled Hughes 500 when I couldn't out-fly a hill and managing to land the chopper's four occupants without injury on the jungle floor.

“I have had engine failures in single and twinengine planes, have had to land in a parking bay and in a paddock outside Mareeba. But that's all

par for the course.

“You don't have to be a brilliant pilot – as long as you are reasonable at stick and rudder – but you do need to be a good thinker to keep flying a long time and I don't believe you have to be a good cattleman to be good at mustering them – just a good communicator.

“As long as you recognise your lack of experience and are prepared to land and ask the person on the ground, ‘how would you like me to do this’, you should be okay.”

Barry said his own first solo muster was a total disaster.

“It was just a small mob of cattle on a small place west of Mt Isa. The 200 head went in 200 different directions and I lost the lot,” he recalled.

“Feeling like a total failure, it was only later the unperturbed grazier told me he had already tried mustering the mob with bikes and horses with the same result.

“My second muster on the Northern Territory border was a dream in comparison, every beast literally ran straight into the yard and I soon learned that while mustering mad cattle, it’s best to just sit back about 1km off them and manage them from a distance.”

These days, the still fit 80 year old spends his time learning the ukulele, gardening, brushing up on his amateur watercolour artist skills and performing secretarial duties for the Far North Nomads club.

Club members meet monthly in different locations around the region and while Barry has already travelled the Great Ocean Road, to Coober Pedy and Broome, he said he and his friend Linda Wells were looking forward to taking their motor home further afield to “somewhere we haven't been”.

Bringing the sales back to the people

THERE hasn't been a cattle sale in Innisfail since February and Malanda since March 2020, when Covid shut down the world but now, Queensland Rural Livestock specialists, Ken Weldon and Luke Hickmott, are excited about bringing those sales back this week.

Mr Hickmott said they had been fielding a lot of enquiries from producers about dates for local sales and were pleased to be able to announce the first store sales of 2022 will be held at the Innisfail Showground at 6.30pm on Friday and at the Malanda Showground, on Saturday at 9am.

“We will have some good lines of 200-330kg cross-bred cattle, all locally born, bred and acclimatised and ready to perform for buyers. Vendors will be booking into a confident market with a couple of southern buyers in attendance and another La Nina forecast for the 2023 season,” he said.

“The store market has been lifting week on week after a sharp Foot and Mouth Disease-related slump in August and buyers are spending again.

“In fact, we have had even more phone calls from re-stockers chasing softer droughty type steers than we have had from vendors keen to sell.”

The Re-stocker Yearling Steer Indicator rolling seven-day average supports this observation, lifting from a post FMD average price of 524.86c/kg on 29 July up to a 16 September level of 656.56 c/ kg, a rise of just under 128c/kg.

The EYCI (Eastern Young Cattle Index) lifted from 887.74c/kg to 1036.23c/kg during the same period.

Malanda Show Society Inc representative Colleen McLucas said it was great to see the return of the Malanda sale as it had been missed by locals.

Lines of softer cattle like these cross-breeds will be on offer at the first Innisfail and Malanda store sales to be held in two and a half years.

“It brings cattle to buyers that are just looking to pick up a few head for their paddock,” she said.

“It's really handy for smaller producers who work during the week and can't get to the Mareeba sales and being right on their doorstep reduces the costs involved for them. Spring rain has created a flush of new grass, so paddocks will be ready for stock.”

Mr Weldon said it was a similar situation around Innisfail.

“There will be a lot of local buyer demand from farmers who have sold cattle and can't get to Mareeba or can't find the right article there to buy,” he said.

“After a long winter, the heat here now is making the coastal feed start to fly.

“We currently have about a 60/40 ratio of cattle on offer at the moment, with about 60 per cent cross breeds and 40 per cent Brahman cattle that should suit both local and western markets.

“We would like to make this sale a regular event again, hopefully monthly if the support is there.”

Dustyn Fitzgerald from the Charters Towers operation will be auctioneering and with food available at both venues and a bar supplying beverages at Innisfail, it will also provide people with a great opportunity to catch up.

“We are expecting this to be a strong sale, so if you have cattle you are thinking about unloading, there is still time. Just call your preferred agent and we will fit them in,” Mr Weldon said.

Smart speakers are a good entry item to start your journey. Smart speakers run on Wi-Fi and come with a virtual assistant that is programmed to respond to your voice.

Some have touchscreen displays for you to view recipes and videos, while the premium ones offer highquality sound. Some smart speakers also have a built-in camera so you can even monitor your home when you are away.

Packed full of an assortment of different vegetables, this slice can be a delicious breakfast, lunch or snack and great for on the go.

BARB’S VEGETABLE SLICE INGREDIENTS 4 eggs, lightly beaten 3 spring onions, chopped ½ cup carrot, grated ½ cup zucchini, grated 310g can corn kernels, drained 3 button mushrooms, diced ½ cup cheddar cheese, reduced fat, grated ½ cup self-raising flour ½ cup wholemeal self-raising flour 2 medium tomatoes sliced, or cherry tomatoes halved ¼ cup cheddar cheese, reduced fat, grated

METHOD Preheat oven to 180°C and line a slice pan with baking paper. Beat the eggs in a large bowl then stir in the spring onions, carrot, zucchini, corn, mushrooms and cheese. Fold through the sifted flours.

Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. Sprinkle with extra cheese then top with the sliced tomato. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until lightly browned and cooked through. Cool before slicing.

Memories aplenty of Queen Elizabeth

MY first memories of the late Queen were in 1953. My twin sister and I attended Muritai School in Eastbourne, Wellington. We were drilled on how to behave, given flags to wave as she and the Duke passed down Cuba Street, Petone.

Our mother got to see her too. We were all so excited.

Then the opportunity came up to see the Queen attend St Paul’s Cathedral, in Wellington. Mum raved on and on, how beautiful she was, glorified by a lovely complexion.

The visit was marred on Xmas Eve when Auckland-Wellington express was swept off a bridge at Tangiwai killing 151 persons.

The Queen’s Xmas message to the Empire and Dominions was broadcast from Auckland. I heard the Queen sadly expressing condolences to the victims’ families.

My mother was forever a Queen advocate even though she later complained of the Scottish Highlands Clearances, denying her family (Duncan) land, resulting in, much later, her grandfather and grandmother emigrating to New Zealand in 1876.

In 1981, I could nearly reach out and touch the Queen in Bourke Street, Melbourne as she was hustled into Myer. She was there to open CHOGM among very unprofessional and sometimes unrestrained police security – much of Melbourne was closed down because of protests.

During the visit of Prince Charles and Diana to celebrate the State of Victoria’s 150th Anniversary in 1985, I, among the Mayors and Shire Presidents and wives, attended a special concert and was entertained by Paul Hogan.

We later had a closer look at the Royal couple on a visit to Mount Macedon to inspect the recovery from the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires in which six persons died and 400 homes and businesses burnt out

in the ranges.

Princess Diana almost gasped when one of our number – a British pentathlete miraculously recovering from a broken neck and smiling – stood out, with a cast enclosing his head and torso, and a British Flag flying from a plaster dome!

It was a shame we Australians were not more gracious to our Monarch and her children when we failed to invite ex-Timber Top boy, Prince Charles (and Diana) to take up a two-year term as Governor General.

I’m certain there was a bit of arrogance and unfounded confidence in ourselves not to acknowledge, in kind, our British parliamentary democratic heritage.

Throughout, I experienced challenging welcomes to members of the Royal Family

by Maori in New Zealand and more recently Aboriginal smoking ceremonies and welcome to country in Australia.

The Maori will never give up their right to a Queen and now a King. It was Queen Victoria’s government which withdrew 10,000 Imperial troops (from Australia’s colonies, India and elsewhere) from the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s in which more volunteer Australian militia died over the same time period than in the recent Afghan War. God Save the King!

Sick and tired of bad driver behaviour

I’VE had enough. For the past 10 years, I have gone from Malanda to Cairns once a week for work purposes. It is on a different day and time each week, and my length of stay also varies.

I drive at 50km per hour, as it gets me there safely, I don’t wear out my brakes, and it does not make me feel sick.

I pull over at every opportunity to allow others to pass if they are behind me. The ‘locals’ appreciate this and give a beep and/or a wave.

I have driven all over Australia for work and pleasure for over thirty years, plus overseas, never had even a small accident and do consider myself a very good driver.

However, over the last 3-4 years, something has changed for the worse on the Gillies. On every single trip down I am passed on double white lines, once on three separate occasions.

Today a woman driver came up behind me and dangerously tailgated, swerved all over the road, flashed her lights, shaking her fist at me, tried to pass on two occasions,

tried to pass on the inside of a little stop area!

For what? There was nothing I could do until it was safe and there was room to move.

When I was finally able to pull over into another little stop area, she roared past shaking her head and giving rude gestures out of her window.

An almost identical thing happened on the way up the hill, different vehicle, different driver, who then passed on double lines rather than wait 50 metres for me to pull over.

I was doing 50kmph both times – the speed limit is 60.

Do you shake your fists at the roadworks too?

If you cannot be courteous and use common sense on a long, dangerous, winding road, don’t use it. If you are used to aggressive and utterly stupid driving habits, go back to where you came from.

If you are in that much of a hurry, leave five minutes earlier. Or, even better, stay at home.

I do not care if you have an accident, but I would care for the good driver you will hit.

From now on, if people like you come up behind me, I am going to slow down to 40kmph, or even less, and I will NOT pull over until there is an actual long passing lane.

And don’t bother with the hand gestures – I will use them in return. My rear and dash cams will be set up by next week, so at least your bad behaviour will be recorded.

CO2 not just our problem

I AM not of the opinion that CO2 is a major factor in climate change. However, if you are a believer in this concept then surely it is a world-wide problem not a NIMBY issue?

Our current Prime Minster supports our production of coal and gas for export because we are “not responsible for what other countries do”.

Is this not a head-in-the-sand moment for our Prime Minister who has legislated Zero Carbon for Australia?

Are we are expected to create a whole new energy system to stop producing the 2 per cent of worldwide CO2 production that we produce, with all the impacts on our economy, but can, with a clear conscience, help the rest of the world with cheap energy that produces CO2?

Am I watching an episode of the old British TV comedy “Yes Minister” or is this our new hypocritical reality?

Under 18s determined for victory THE Atherton Senior Roosters Under 18 side head to Barlow Park on Saturday looking to break a 18-year-old drought on premiership CDRL titles which was last won by the club back in 2004.

On Saturday, the Roosters meet minor premiers Kangaroos who they defeated in the major semi two weeks ago on their way to booking a spot in the grand final. Kangaroos downed Ivanhoes in last Sunday’s preliminary final and now return for another match up with the Roosters.

The 2022 Roosters side has players drawn from all four Eacham junior clubs which includes Ravenshoe, Herberton, Malanda and Atherton which highlights local talent from across the Tablelands.

After leading the competition through to the half way mark, the young Roosters went off the pace in the later stages of the season but to their credit they have returned to form for the

business end of the year.

Several players in this year’s side were part of the 2021 Roosters Under 18 team which fell one game short of the grand final.

The Atherton Senior Roosters joined the CDRL competition in 1980 and have won three of their eight Under 18 grand final appearances during those 42 years.

Coach Gary Benson and captain Dallas Johnson steered the Roosters to their first trophy in 1999 which was 19 years in the making.

Coach James Crawford and captain Calvin Freeman fronted the 2002 title win while the 2004 premiership winning coach was Rob White and captained by Anthony Ball.

Captain Aiden Carson and coach Ben Fahlstrom lead the Roosters into this Saturday’s grand final which completes the Atherton Senior Roosters 104th season.

Roosters reflect on season run HEADING into their final face off for 2022, the Atherton Roosters U18s are preparing to cap off an incredible season of top-notch rugby league in the CDRL with their grand final this weekend.

The Roosters begun the season strong, blitzing through the competition and beginning a long winning streak which helped them establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

It would end up being the Kangaroos who put a stop to the Roosters 14-game winning streak, but the Roosters ended up getting revenge when they beat the Kangaroos in the second round of the elimination finals.

The Roosters got the chance to sit out last weekend’s round and let the boys get some rest before the grand final this weekend.

The Roosters have been waiting since Round one of this year’s season to play in the finals and according to coach Ben Falhstrom, the boys are still raring to go.

“I am over the moon with how the boys went so far this season,” he said.

“We just took our season

one game at a time, we kept it simple and the boys have just followed.

“At the start of the year when I took this on, I knew we had a good squad, it was just about how far we were going to take it.”

After a stunning performance at the beginning of the season, the Roosters had a rough patch late in the season, losing several games before beginning of the finals.

Falhstrom put it down to player injuries and not having their best players on the field as some of them had to step up to the higher grades in either Reserves or A Grade to replace missing players.

“Out of the last six games we have played we have lost the last four and I just put that down to rolling through the motions,” he said.

“We had a few injuries and we went through our whole squad, we have a squad of about 26 and every one of them took part in a game this year.

“At the back end of the season, our higher grades were short and we had five or six boys each week playing Reserves or A Grade.”

LOCALS are urged to be part of grand final week and show their the red, white and blue colours on Friday in support of the roosters under 18 team.

There is also a best dress business competition and bus transport available to Cairns on Saturday. Details are available on the Atherton Roosters Facebook page.

Mixed start for Atherton THE 2022/23 cricket season officially kicked off over the weekend as Atherton’s first grade played host to multiple teams for the beginning of the Cricket Far North T20 competition at Loder Park.

Game one on Saturday saw Barron River win the toss and send a depleted Atherton side out to bat.

Openers Chris Adams and Ken Webb got the team off to a good start, scoring 25 and 14 respectively before wickets fell consistently, Atherton ended 9/112 at the end of their 20 overs.

Opening the bowling for Atherton was debutante Matt Coleman who picked up opener Tim Ward off just his second ball.

Youngster Chance Riggs picked up the prized wicket of Andrew Phelps in his second over and things were looking good for the home team however some sloppy fielding and dropped catches saw Barron run down the total in the 18th over.

Game two was won by forfeit as were Rovers unable to field a team.

Atherton were back on Sunday morning for the third of their scheduled matches to take on Cassowary Coast with a couple regular players back on the park.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat and Atherton paceman Lockie Hollitt wasted no time claiming the scalp of Luke McAvoy on the 3rd ball of the day.

Dan Parnell (3/9) and captain Tommy Boorman (4/8) kept the pressure on with Cassowary Coast notching up a total of just 88 runs.

Atherton’s top scorer Logan Poggioli on 37 and Boorman with 15 put together a 43-run partnership and chased down the total to help the home team secure a six wicket win in the 17th over.

This Saturday Atherton will be travelling to Cairns to play against both Norths and Mulgrave respectively with the latter of the two being played under lights at Walker Road.

TO cope with the increased number of new racers, Tableland Competition Car Club has created a new class of beginners, D Grade.

A group of youngsters, having fun, learning to control their cars on a very unpredictable surface.

While Lach in the water truck battled to keep dust down on a rapidly drying track, the 25 drivers were kept racing, thanks to the club’s hardworking volunteers.

The final showdown for the dirt track duellers will be at Tepon Raceway on Sunday 16 October.

Sprinting to State success THE “fastest kid in school” Julius Parsons will be heading to the Queensland Titles in Brisbane next month after dominating the track at his school athletics carnival, district sports and peninsula trials.

The 11-year-old super star has been aged champion for both school and districts athletics carnival and will represent Mareeba and his school St Thomas’ Catholic Primary with pride.

“My main event is the 100 metre sprint and I love it because if you win the 100 metre sprint, that makes you one of the fastest kids in school,” Parsons said.

“I am off to the Queensland Titles in Brisbane next month and I am doing three events which are the 100m, 200m and 800m.

“I am feeling pretty excited but also a little bit nervous, but my dad is coming down to support me which will make it easier.”

The 100 metre sprint is his star has been in athletics for years, with his father Adrian saying he has been involved in sports since he was young.

As well as being involved in school sports, Parsons attends “Little Athletics”, where he competes frequently alongside other high level athletes in the area.

Recently he competed at the Queensland Championships for Little Athletics and came first in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, long jump and high jump.

As well as athletics, Parsons has a love for his rugby league playing in the Under 11’s team this season and being dubbed Best and Fairest Player at the recent Mareeba Junior Rugby League presentation night.

He will make his way down to Brisbane for the Queensland Championships which kick off on October 11.

Junior cricketers come and try MAREEBA Cricket Club held a come and try and player sign on day last week. The afternoon gave young cricketers the opportunity to try out the sport and encouraged them to get involved in the upcoming 2022 season.

Bowlers take on Yungaburra challenge IT was a jam-packed weekend of bowls in Yungaburra with 14 teams coming together for the Yungaburra $1000 challenge.

Under warm conditions the day began with the first game honours going to Team Thompson +21 followed by Team Rick +10 and Team Lewis +9.

Game two saw a change in the leader board with a loss from Team Thompson causing them to slip with 6 teams coming to the fore with 2 wins.

and Team Vella 2W+13 were at the pointy end of the leaders board.

Whichever team could secure three wins were still in the mix then it depended on the points differential.

MAREEBA Junior Rugby League celebrated the end of a stellar season recently as they hosted their annual presentation event, giving praise and recognition to the many players and volunteers who made a difference this season.

The club had 226 registered players spanning age groups from U6s through to U16s and for the second consecutive season, the club fielded a team in every age group.

These teams were recognised for their season’s efforts at a recent presentation day at their home ground at Davies Park.

Players got to take home trophies such as best and fairest, best forward, player’s player and more including a club player of the year award which was bestowed upon U15 player Bryce Fincham.

Club stalwarts Brett Crooks and Rachael Morgan were recognised for their years of selfless dedication to the club and were awarded the 2021 and 2022 Life Member awards respectively.

Club president Shaun Fincham said that without the amazing support from the many different volunteers, the club would not have had such a great year of junior rugby league.

“I would like to thank all our volunteers for their valuable contributions

throughout this year, it cannot be understated,” he said.

“The 82 registered volunteers consisting of grandparents, parents, caregivers and siblings filling valuable on field and game day roles.

“Their efforts to attend training, gain accreditation and give back to the rugby league community is greatly appreciated.”

The presentation day gives the club a chance to thank and acknowledge each and every one of their members, from volunteers to officials and the players.

“Presentation day allows us to thank our sponsors and volunteers, without their valuable contributions we wouldn’t have the club we do today,” Fincham said.

“It also allows us to acknowledge the efforts of the players, positively reinforcing the attributes of mateship and teamwork whilst acknowledging individual achievement.”

The club also took time to recognise junior players who have been fully committed to Mareeba Junior Rugby League since day dot, with six new players receiving Life Player awards.

To receive a Life Player award, juniors must play 10 consecutive years for the club and to have six new Life Players after the recent season is a great sign of the growth and prosperity of junior league in Mareeba.

Fast Train steams home for cup win

LOCALLY owned and trained Fast Train has taken out the 2022 Atherton Cup, racking up successive cup wins for Tolga trainer Janel Ryan.

Fast Train was the favourite with a starting price of 2/1 and with jockey Shane Pawsey aboard, the seven-year-old gelding, took line honours in the Open Handicap run over 2000m.

Owners, the Poggioli and Watson families, who picked up $11,700 in prizemoney, must have been happy and surprised at the win, given Fast Train only managed a fifth in the Cairns Amateur Cup last weekend.

Second in the Cup was the Alex Mallifftrained Love on Sunday and another of Ryan’s horses, New King placed third.

This is the second local cup that Malliff has had to settle for second place, with another of his horses, Necessitas, coming second in Mareeba Cup on 3 September.

The other feature race on the card, the Costa Well Grown Benchmark 50 Handicap over 1400m, was taken out by Laudeylou, a five-year-

The meeting kicked off with the Cottage Café Maiden Plate over 1000m, taken out by The Lout, trained by Megan Purvis and ridden by Pietro Romeo, ahead of Dream Love and race favourite Fine Impact.

Tablelands show out at gold medal dinner

Eagles fly off with grand final win AFTER not appearing in a grand final for the past three years, the Atherton Eagles have ended a six-year grand final win dry spell with the Division One Men’s team win over town rivals the Mareeba Bulls on Friday night.

The two teams faced off on neutral ground at Endeavor Park in what proved to be a tight, well-matched game between the two Tableland clubs. Spectators and supporters were sat on the edge of their seats throughout the whole match as both teams battled it out.

Mareeba was on the scoreboard first, but the Eagles quickly followed and tied up the score at one all at the half time whistle.

Going into second half the defence of both teams stayed strong as they played hard but with neither team managing to break away, the fulltime whistle blew to the tune of a draw.

With the game going into extra time, the Eagles secured a cracker goal by Jaydon Wells to bring the scoreboard to 2-1, however Mareeba dug deep just before extra time was up, scor-

ing again and bringing the game to yet another draw.

The game went down to a penalty shootout to determine the 2022 Division One grand final winner, spectators were on the edge of their seats as the teams took their shots.

The final shot slotted by Alex Payne made it to the back of the net and after two cracker saves

by Eagles goalkeeper Luke Barletta, the Eagles came home with the trophy.

Coach Joson Curcio and assistant Frankie Gallo are stoked the team brought home the victory and are proud of the boys and what they achieved.

Atherton Eagles vice president Jason Cummings said the win was a long time coming.

“The boys deserve this, there has been a big shift in culture and thinking this past couple of years and it is awesome to see some recognition in results,” he said.

THE Tablelands was well represented at the recent FNQ Rugby League gold medal dinner as both the Atherton Roosters and the Mareeba Gladiators took home several awards covering both their players and volunteers.

While both teams missed out on the firstgrade gold medal to Mossman’s Eddie Daniel, they shared the U18 player of the year award with Mareeba’s Tyrone Williams and Atherton’s Zamien Gilbert announced as joint winners.

Juniors were also in the spotlight at the dinner with Limferd Lui from Herberton being awarded the U16s best and fairest silver medal for his efforts in the local Eacham competition.

Recently announced Mareeba Junior Rugby League life member Rachael Morgan was again recognised for her efforts as she was announced as a joint winner of the Volunteer of the Year award alongside Yarrabah’s Ashleigh Schreiber.

Breanne sails towards lifelong Olympic dream

BY RHYS THOMAS BREANNE Wadleys has joined a highly prestigious list of some of the most famous names in Australian sailing including Olympic gold medallists after she won the Queensland Youth Sailor of the Year award in Brisbane recently.

Breanne has been sailing since she was four years old and feels right at home on the water, a fact she has proven many times over with numerous state, national and world championship titles under her belt.

She has been dominating Australia’s eastern coast sailing scene for the past decade alongside her older siblings – Travis and Kristen – and since August 2021, has won three state titles and one national title.

Breanne also just recently returned from competing in the largest youth championship ever, the ILCA4 Youth World Championship in Portugal and came 28th out of the 170 female competitors – the entire championship had a total of 450 boats competing.

Her exploits are not just contained to the water as Breanne recently attained a qualification to become an Australia sailing instructor, constantly volunteers her time to her home club – the Tina-

roo Sailing Club – and is a shining role model to younger female sailors.

Due to her achievements both on and off the water, Breanne was nominated for the Queensland Youth Sailor of the Year award, following on from a nomination last year in which she finished as a finalist.

Out of the 10 nominations received for this year’s award, Breanne was chosen as one of the four finalists who were invited to attend the presentation dinner in Brisbane and when her name was called, she could not believe she had won.

“It was a bit surreal to hear my name being called because I was not really expecting to win so it was a pleasant surprise,” she said.

“I was up against some of my close competitors in normal racing and it was nice to beat them as well.

“I am happy to see my efforts recognised by receiving a prestigious award like this.”

Not wanting to miss out on any training, Breanne even suited up and sailed on the waters down in Brisbane during her brief visit to keep her skills sharp.

She trains at least three times per week on Lake Tinaroo, cycles and at-

tends cross-fit and uses every opportunity to learn and grow so that she can continue to be at the top of the sport that she loves.

Breanne’s name has now been etched into a perpetual trophy alongside many famous names in sailing including previous Olympic gold medallists, a feat Breanne hopes to accomplish herself in the future.

“The Olympics are possible but it is a very long road till then but this award gets your name out there and gets you

recognised,” she said.

“You really have to commit to compete in the Olympics and be sure it is what you want to do.”

After winning the Queensland award, Breanne has a chance to compete for the Australian Youth Sailor of the Year award after going through another selection process.

However, she has chosen to not sit idle and is already away in Yeppoon competing in the Queensland Youth Championships with her brother Travis.

“I am really looking forward to it, we have done that regatta for the past 10 years and it is a really good atmosphere both on and off the water,” Breanne said.

“Because it is a youth championship all my friends from all different classes and types of boats are there.

“There are always great coaches doing the training at the beginning and I always learn a lot and meet new people.”
