‘Nipper’ to enjoy Savannah pool festival ahead of October smorgasbord of country music

BY MICHAEL WARREN MAREEBA festival goers, residents across the Tablelands and others from across the state will make their way to Cairns this Friday and Saturday to sip cocktails, dine at poolside pop-up food stalls and enjoy 18 hours of live music at the Savannah Summer Series Pool Party.

The two-day event is a prelude and warm-up to the region’s new country music festival, Savannah in the Round, (SITR) at Mareeba’s Kerribee Park from October 1-3.

Among the masses at the Novotel Oasis hosted event over the next few days to enjoy the likes of Thirsty Merc, Adam Brand and others will be one of the people that pushed for the creation of SITR, Edward 'Nipper' Brown.

Nipper like many others is excited to get a taste of live music ahead of the main thing in a few months’ time.

“It will be a good few days and a timely lead into the real

stuff in October,” he said.

“I think after the past 12 months we’ve experienced a lot of people are just wanting to have some fun outdoors, both the pool party and later in the year, SITR, will allow people to do just that.”

Meanwhile, SITR is sure to become entrenched as one of Far North Queensland’s most iconic annual events. After seeing the powerhouse success of CMC Rocks down south Nipper wanted to create Far North’s version of CMC. He soon secured the funds for an event feasibility study, joined forces with renowned promoter James Dein to get the project off the ground – and the rest is history.

Aside from Nipper, Mareeba’s Shane Srhoj also played a big role in the formation of the event. His passion, initiative and ongoing discussions with Dein, which started at the Way out West Fest in Winton, vital in SITR eventually being established.

Nipper Brown is looking forward to the Savannah Summer Series Pool Party this Friday and Saturday.

Far North Queensland towns named as finalists for top tourism awards

BY MICHAEL WARREN THREE Far North towns and two others based further inland have been announced as finalists in a state tourism competition that recognizes and showcases towns that regularly provide outstanding visitor experiences across the state.

The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) confirmed Mareeba as a finalist in the large top tourism town category, (over 5000 people) and it will need to overcome towns such as Townsville, Noosa and Bundaberg to secure the major prize of an Earthcheck $25,000 strategic consulting and capacity building package.

Karumba, Georgetown, Yungaburra and Kuranda (under 5000 people) are small top tourism town finalists and stand to win a $7,500 Tourism Group, tourism consultancy and development package if they overcome rivals such as Airlie Beach, Agnes Water 1770 and others.

“It’s very exciting that Mareeba has been confirmed as a large top town finalist,” Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin told The Express.

“We have a very friendly town that is an ideal destination to work, live and visit.

“I also want to thoroughly commend Kuranda, as well, just as much for being confirmed as a small top town finalist –

Kuranda is a wonderful town to visit and explore.”

Kuranda’s confirmation as a small-town finalist is certain to be welcome publicity for the ‘village in the rainforest’ with members of the local Traders’ Association making a concerted recent push to promote the small tourist mecca to potential future visitors from Queensland and interstate.

Both winners will be determined by a public vote with voting now open until April 26.

Those who take the time to vote can win a $2,000 Apollo Motorhome travel package.

QTIC Chief Executive, Daniel Gschwind said the Awards highlight the great and diverse destinations across Queensland.

“With the current focus on domestic tourism, now is the time to draw attention to our regional destinations and to put the spotlight on our tourism operators and communities who keep our regions thriving,” Mr Gschwind told The Express.

“We have towns from as far north as Mareeba, to the coast of Rainbow Beach and out west to Longreach which shows the amazingly diverse tourism landscape we have right here in our backyard.

“It is now up to the public to tell us who they think should be crowned the top tourism town of Queensland, which is a challenging task, with so many worthy contenders.”

Lack of nominations causes Great Wheelbarrow Race cancellation

BY MICHAEL WARREN NEXT month’s Great Wheelbarrow Race has been cancelled with a modified single day challenge event not securing the required 45 nominations to go ahead.

Because of the remaining COVID restrictions the Great Wheelbarrow Race committee had instead planned to host a reduced event on Saturday, May 15 with entrants to have completed a 95km challenge from Dimbulah to Chillagoe.

“Unfortunately, there were not enough nominations to make the event viable,” Mareeba Shire Councillor Locky Bensted said.

“The new one-day event was an attempt to make the event feasible within COVID requirements and keep the spirit of the race alive.

“With many social elements of the race taken away due to COVID, it was evident there was not enough support out there for the re-formatted event.

“The committee worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the event happen this year, navigating through the COVID restrictions and requirements.”

“While we are disappointed with the outcome, we had to be realistic. The decision came down to the number of nominations we received and unfortunately we didn’t meet our target to enable the event to proceed.”

Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said other factors also contributed to the event’s cancellation.

“Even with Council’s generous contribution, both financially and in-kind, the number of nominations and sponsorship received this year will not cover the costs to run the event,” Ms Toppin said.

“I know many people were looking forward to this event however, the community cannot afford to fund the shortfall.

“As Mayor I thank the Chair of the committee, Cr Locky Bensted and committee members for their commitment and passion to keep the spirit of the race alive.”

The Great Wheelbarrow race acts as an annual fundraiser for multiple charities and provides a timely social and economic boost for small towns like Dimbulah, Almaden and Chillagoe and several clubs along the race’s route.

The Mareeba ANZAC Day march ias back on after COVID restrictions were lifted last week.

Mareeba set to march again this Anzac Day

May 16th from 8am until 12.30pm.

MAREEBA residents will be able to celebrate and march in Mareeba this Anzac Day after COVID restrictions were eased across Queensland.

Last Wednesday afternoon the Queensland Premier announced that Anzac Day parades and outdoor events could proceed without COVID restrictions.

The Mareeba RSL SubBranch was cleared to host their march after receiving a statement from from Queensland Health.

The statement read, “Anzac Day restrictions have now eased further. According to the Roadmap for easing restrictions for Queensland, Anzac Day Parades do not require a checklist or event plan. You can go ahead with your 10am service if you wish, with no restrictions.”

This is welcome news for the Mareeba RSL Sub-Branch who initially had to cancel their

march due to the difficulty of enforcing the COVID restrictions on the large number of residents who regularly attend.

With backing from both the Mareeba Shire Council and Mareeba Police road closures have already been approved for the event.

“We know that many citizens were disappointed when we originally announced the cancellation, none more so than our own veteran members,” Mareeba RSL Sub-Branch Secretary Cheryl Emmerson said.

“It’s great that we can now all gather together once again to honour our veterans in the timehonored way of the Anzac Spirit.

“We are urging everyone to be Sun Smart, please wear a hat, bring your brollies, wear cool clothing and bring water bottles to stay hydrated.”

New Kuranda Range Bypass Road Committee to call public meeting A STEERING committee has been formed to support an alternative road to Cairns from Mareeba which will keep motorists and the public informed about funding and progress of its construction.

Spokesman for the group, Ron Reddicliffe said the exact location of the road given to The Main Roads months ago had not altered but some motorists were confusing the new route with the existing Bridle Track Road

which begins on Davies Creek Road.

“The Kuranda Range Bypass Road has nothing to do with the Bridle Track which was excluded as an alternative road to Cairns years ago because it climbs to 800 metres or more and is too steep for a highway,” Mr Reddicliffe said.

“The new road starts on the Cairns side of the Davies Creek Bridge on the Kennedy Highway.

“We have been told a consultant has been employed by Transport and Main Roads to examine this new road or anywhere else if suitable and we hope it doesn’t drag on for years because after reading the latest report on the condition of the Barron River bridge the new road construction is now urgent.

“We should be bypassing the Kuranda Range as soon as possible before more cars or trucks go over the edge and give

transport companies some relief knowing something is actually being done to go around the dangerous range road.”

The group intends to call a public meeting in Mareeba in the near future to involve Mareeba and Tablelands’ residents and an invitation would go to Cairns Regional Council.

Lui satisfied she's doing the best job for Cook Being a State Member with a responsibility to represent the thousands of constituents within an electorate is no easy task. It’s generally an extremely grueling and demanding role that comes with undeniable scrutiny and pressure – such is the life of a public servant.

Add trying to service an electorate during a global pandemic and you have a one very challenging job. In recent times Member for Cook Cynthia Lui has faced her own criticisms about her time in the role. Express journalist Michael Warren sat down for an extended interview with the State Member.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I’m not going to change the views of every single person. I know myself I try and do the very best I can as the Member of Cook. I advocate for every single person as best I can in this electorate.

Generally speaking I have one of three biggest electorates in Queensland; my region obviously covers Mareeba, The Ta-

blelands, Douglas Shire and all the way back to the Torres Strait.

Naturally in recent times being in the middle of a global pandemic, I’ve had to ensure all our communities in the Cook electorate are safe and that we are doing all we can to make sure the virus doesn’t get into the communities.

Another perceived view from sections of this side of the electorate is that you generally only visit Mareeba or surrounding towns when you’re chasing votes or it’s near election time. Again, a fair assessment or an inaccurate point of view?

I think it’s very unfair. I know how hard I work for communities to elevate issues right across my electorate. Like I previously mentioned I’ve been working on community issues, as well as (the challenges) a global pandemic (presents) to make sure all my communities in Cook are safe guarded.

Most recently we’ve had issues with the rising number of COVID cases in PNG and that is putting a lot of pressure on the Torres Strait, so obviously my attention has been on that

What are your thoughts when you hear conversations about constituents suggesting you spend way more time in the Torres Strait than any other part of your electorate?

That’s always something that’s been thrown around, I think for the obvious reason that I’m from the Torres Strait. Every trip I take to the Torres Strait people see it as me spending too much time in the Torres Strait.

I can tell you last year alone I spent very little time in the Torres Strait and a lot more time in Mareeba and this part of the electorate. I have had no one In the Torres Strait suggesting I spend too much time in Mareeba, but a fair few suggesting the opposite, again I can’t change people’s views, and what they think.

But is it a fair assessment though?

Like I said it’s a large electorate; I’ve got 13 Councils that I work across, 13 Mayors and one town authority. I’ve got two other communities in the western Cape and Weipa that I need to look after.

I respect and understand people in Mareeba feel they don’t see me enough, but as you can understand people want to see me in other communities as well.

There’s only one of me and only so far I can stretch myself.

I’d love to say I’ll be regularly able to visit every town in my electorate on a frequent basis, but that simply isn’t possible.

I’ve just got to do the best I can.

So COVID aside it sits comfortably with you that you’ve given this side of your electorate enough of a focus over the past few months?

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui believes she is doing the best job she can in the wake on the ongoing COVID pandemic.

region, yes. I’m not just talking about Mareeba, I’m talking about right across the electorate.

Crime is always a talking point in your electorate. Do we need tougher penalties in Far North Queensland for juvenile and youth led crime?

I firmly believe a wholistic approach is the way to combat youth and juvenile led crime.

Our five-point and now sevenpoint plan has proven successful and we are happy with how it is going.

What are the themes or types of issues your constituents have been raising with you at your pop-up office?

Besides crime matters, people have asked questions about the Barron river bridge, Government’s stance on supporting future job creation, while the want for a new community hall was also mentioned to me.

Just on the Barron bridge, what’s your own opinion on what should happen to it?

CL: I can’t really tell you what should happen to it. Right now it’s the only access for local residents to Cairns airport. At the end of the day I want a safe bridge that is suitable for everyone to travel on.

I don’t feel I’m in a position to make any further comment without a proper report about its future in front of me.

Probably one of the most talked about matters in Mareeba, The Tablelands and this part of your electorate throughout the first four months of this year has been the push to fast-track the construction of a new, dual lane highway that links Cairns with Mareeba. What is your personal opinion about this project turning into reality?

I haven’t heard and don’t know anything about it. More broadly as a State Government we’ve injected $45m into the Kennedy Highway, specifically between Kuranda and Mareeba - the Kuranda Road is safe and a good road to travel on.

Cynthia, what are you most proud of during your tenure in this part of your electorate?

I’m really happy we purchased and installed a CT scanner at Mareeba Hospital and equally proud about the $3.8m endoscopy service. At Mareeba State school we constructed a new prep learning centre while at Mareeba High we constructed additional classrooms.

From a roads perspective and like I mentioned earlier we upgraded 31km of the Kennedy Highway between Kuranda and Mareeba which resulted in 284 jobs being created.

We’ve also committed $30.5m for works on the Burke Developmental Road. From an infrastructure perspective I’m proud about the Mareeba Airport upgrade, the community hub and the other projects we’ve completed in the community.

Before we started this interview and purely coincidentally, I observed and overheard from a short distance away a Mareeba constituent at your pop-up desk take issue with you about this very matter. How does the term ‘invisible minister’ sit with you? Is it a fair portrayal or an unbalanced viewpoint and complete misconception?

Sustainable water plan needed for Tablelands

BY SALLY TURLEY FARMERS in the Barron River catchment have combined during recent weeks to appeal to government for more water and continued legislation to keep out the sharks, combined with water security and a presence during the development process of the new water plan.

Around 50 farmers gathered in Atherton recently to listen to Acting Manager Water Planning from the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing

and Water (DRDMW), Patrick Huber and assistant, Kira Hinton-Tingay speak on the development of a replacement for the 2002 Barron water plan which expires on December l9, 2022.

With the cutoff date for submissions to the Proposed replacement of the Water Plan (Barron) 2002 - S44 of the Water Act 2000 closing last Friday, farmers in the area have been united and consistent in their message to DRDMW. "Water is everything and without it we have nothing,"

third generation dairy farmer and potato grower, Frank Cuda told The Express.

"Farmers are being asked to produce more and more and the crop base across the Tablelands keeps expanding. The pressure on us to keep putting food on a lot of tables keeps growing and more water must be made available," he said.

"Tinaroo Dam is already down to 78% and dropping. The current system is at its limits and they are not issuing any more allocations. We could be on water

restrictions from day one. Reliability of supply is so important, but we are always living on the edge, looking for help from the skies.

The government needs to look at alternatives like channeling high flow water out of the Johnstone River into Tinaroo dam to supplement supply.

There are very few irrigators on the Johnstone and most of the water accumulated throughout its 2,320 sq km catchment area is just emptying into the Coral Sea," he said.

Keeping out water dealing by landless corporates was equally important to farmers. Meeting organiser, Case Schoorl said, when water packages were released in Southern Queensland, allocations were snapped up by cashed up, non-farming investors who then dealt water back to farmers at exorbitant prices.

Farmers were forced to go to these dealers and buy water from them on a 'take it or leave it basis,' just so they could keep operating. The Government could be sympathetic to this process as they received a percentage of the transaction every time water was dealt.

Local cane and potato grower, David Nix said the current Barron Water Committee fought long and hard to ensure that only people who owned land in the area were allowed to buy water.

"So many farmers have had to mortgage their water entitlements to their banks and those entitlements were pivotal to their financial security as well as security of production. Losing those water rights could even result in bank foreclosures," he said.

Mr Nix raised the idea of a water register for inclusion in the new plan. With water supply so tight and the need for many farmers to double crop to survive financially, they often needed to embark on seasonal trading to get them through. He said having a list of what water was available for purchase would speed up that process.

Other issues of concern to producers included the cutting of water allocations throughout the growing season. Once a crop is in the ground or the cattle are in the paddock, the economic commitment to that project has already been made by farmers.

On invitation from local farmer Case Schoorl (L), Acting Manager Water Planning for the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water, Patrick Huber attended a meeting with some 50 concerned local farmers in Atherton recently to discuss the Proposed Replacement of the (Barron) Water Plan 2002.

Growers requested a longer lead in time be provided to them by the department before water restrictions were enforced, allowing them a better opportunity to manage the water they had to maximise annual growth and production.

Agricultural representation through the formation of an advisory body to work alongside the department during the preparation of a replacement plan was also high on farmers' wish-list.

"Development of plans such as these is a complex and convoluted process" Mr Schoorl said. The finalisation of the 2002 plan, estimated to take 18 months to 2 years ended up blowing out to a 14 year process and while the department has been good to work with historically, if we do not get involved, they will have a free run," he said. " I received a total of 10 submissions from farmers affected by the plan and delivered them into the hands of the department staff last Friday. Once those submissions have been read, I believe DRDMW will call for the formation of an advisory group and then the process will begin in earnest."

For decades farmers have relied on Tinaroo Dam for their water. Completed in 1959, the

dam impounds 75% of the volume of Sydney Harbour, or 438,919 megalitres at 100% capacity, has a maximum depth of 41.8m and a spillway capacity of 1,160 cubic metres per second.

It was designed over 60 years ago for water storage and to supply irrigation to 9000ha of farmland,' but by 2015, over 59,000ha or 28% of the catchment was being used for agriculture.

Some 415 square kilometres of that area was farmland irrigated from the extensive 176km network of channels, dwarfing the original area planned for by over four and a half times.

Tinaroo Dam also provides drinking water to the townships of Tinaroo, Walkamin, Mareeba, Kuranda, Mutchilba, Dimbulah and Yungaburra. The population has almost doubled across the region growing from around 23,000 people in 1966 to around 45,000 in the 2011 census.

If we are to maintain our enviable reputation as the 'food bowl of Queensland's far north,' the formation of a plan that ensures a sustainable platform for horticulture, while catering to the region's continued growth in population and eco-tourism is what is required from this new water plan.

125 years of enriching young minds

AFTER being founded in 1895, Tolga State School (TSS) has lived through two world wars and now two global pandemics all before its 125th birthday this Saturday.

Originally the 125-year celebration was due to be held last year but was postponed as the celebrations could not be held

due to COVID. Tolga has been situated in an area rife with industrial and agricultural developments from a bustling railway town in the late 80s and early 90s to the construction of the Tinaroo Dam, all driving economic and population growth.

The school has developed and grown with the rest of the world and its surroundings, go-

ing from a one building school with around 30 students to a multi building school with 10 times the number of students.

Kayleen Wright has been the principal at TSS for over eight years and is currently in her ninth, she has seen the school progress into the modern age firsthand.

“The school has progressed enormously over the years go-

ing from chalkboards and long desks to single desks and electronic whiteboards,” she said.

“Last year when we were in the middle of COVID the school went highly technical, and we were able to offer lessons at home through a variety of means, old school and new school.

“Tolga has shrunk over the years but at the moment it is

growing and expanding.”

A deep sense of community and camaraderie often accompanies small town schools and businesses and the TSS is no exception with them currently teaching the fourth generation of some local families.

The oldest building in the school is the administration block which is suspected to have been constructed in the

early years of the school’s lifespan, since then it has undergone many renovations, but the stories and history still lingers in its foundations.

TSS is inviting all past students, teachers and community members to join them in a celebration of their 125 years of education with a special celebration and country fate this Saturday, April 24, from 9am.

THREE schools from the Gulf have teamed up with local musician Josh Arnold to create a music video promoting effective ways to stay safe in floods and cyclones that hit the region.

Normanton State School, Gulf Christian College and Karumba State School all starred in the video, with students singing and dancing in rain and sun.

‘Big Water’ was written by Josh Arnold who saw the opportunity to spread the message through monsoonal trough relief funding granted to the Carpentaria Shire Council.

He then contacted the three big primary schools to create compose and film the two min-

ute YouTube video.

Emmy Lou Gallagher said the video has a big message to locals of Normanton and Karumba.

“Up here we witness a lot of flooding and there are so many messages in the video to warn people about,” she said.

“Mr. Arnold took on the project and has been corresponding with the schools back to happen.”

Josh Arnold says that working on the project was great fun and believes it will spread the message well.

“I believe it will have a great effect as it is a catchy song and the music is a great way to reit-

erate information,” he said.

“Council gave me some key points that they wanted in the song around flooding and cyclone awareness then they asked the local community for some ideas and I wrote the song in a few hours.

“A few years ago I worked with the Council to create a different song and video called ‘Outback by the Sea’, so they really engaged me to do this production.”

The song features messages such as ‘if it’s flooded, forget it’ and ‘watch out for fallen powerlines’ in the case of natural disaster.

Minister inspects hospital upgrades QUEENSLAND Health and Ambulance Minister Yvette D’Ath has visited Mossman Hospital amidst its $10.1m upgrade which will deliver a modernised emergency department and improved health facilities.

The key refurbishment areas improvements to the emergency department includes new triage and administration areas, a new patient waiting room, four stretcher bays, an additional four fast track treatment chairs, two new consultation rooms, two resuscitation bays, a dedicated plaster room and eye exam room, a new patient shower and toilet and a purpose fit room for medical records.

“This work will substantially enhance conditions for patients and staff and provide a more comfortable experience for patients and a smoother flow from the Emergency Department to the rest of the hospital,” Ms D’Ath said.

There are also significant improvements to the hospital’s air conditioning and water supply systems.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the new emergency department design will improve Mossman Hospital’s ability to triage and treat emergency presentations.

“Our emergency department was designed around twenty

years ago when it had an average of five to 10 presentations to the emergency department a day - but now we are averaging 38 presentations per day,” Ms Lui explained.

“So, we are excited to see this work nearing completion. It will give the staff and patients in the emergency department a lot more room.

“There is also an improved patient drop off and pick up area and a new covered ambulance bay with direct access to the emergency department which will enhance patient transfer in all weather conditions.”

THE Tolga QCWA has done their part in helping domestic violence victims after putting together and donating special domestic violence emergency packs to the Tablelands Women’s Centre.

The packs contained essential items such as soaps, conditions and other hygiene items along with crocheted items and toys for children.

These packs are then distributed to victims of domestic violence at the centre to use and ensure that they feel safe and comfortable.

President of the Tolga QCWA Janice Ryan said that it was important to have these packs there for women and children to utilise when they arrive at the centre.

“When the women arrive in these situations, they are given an emergency pack to get them through because when they arrive, they virtually have nothing,” she said.

“A lot of times women arrive with their children and the toys are there so that the kids don’t feel lost.

“We felt that we needed to do something, and this is what we decided on because of what we have heard about domestic violence on the Tablelands.”

The Tolga QCWA was able to get the funds for the emergency packs through their Cent Sale with the remainder of the money raised donated into the Tablelands Women’s Centre.

BY SALLY TURLEY THE Borghero family has produced gold miners, publicans, Australia's top rodeo clown, Australia's first female taxi drivers, teachers, soldiers and plumbers, but when asked what made him proudest of his relatives, Atherton's Lawrie Borghero joked it was "their breeding ability."

On the 100th anniversary of his mother's birth, her living descendents numbered 8 children, 37 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. Lawrie Borghero said he keeps meeting new family members over Facebook and operates on the proviso, that if someone's name is Borghero, they are related to him.

Keen to keep younger generations in touch with their ancestors and their fascinating history, the Borghero family organised a family reunion last month.

Around 60 relatives travelled to Atherton from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland to celebrate with the oldest remaining family members, Lawrie Borghero and his wife Ros, of Atherton and his sister Elva, who now lives in Cairns.

From the beginning, these red blooded Italians have been adventurers and pioneers. Born in 1794, publican Antonio Borghero and his wife Anna lived big, raising their 12 children - 6 boys and 6 girls at their hotel in Ronco Scrivia, 20km north of Genoa.

Their eldest son Francesco made his mark in the church, entering the Archdiocesan seminary of Genoa in 1830 and became the first missionary for the Society of African Missions and founder of the Catholic Church in Nigeria and Benin.

He came home to write and teach philosophy and theology, eventually becoming the Spiritual Director to the Seminary of the Sons of Mary Immaculate, where he was entombed beneath an alter dedicated to his memory after his death in 1892. Revered by the people there, his life is celebrated annually on the anniversary of his death.

But 11 kids is still a lot of mouths to feed, so it is not suprising that many of them made the decision to seek new lives elsewhere. Several migrated to South America and the USA, but 2 sons, Tommaso (Louis) and Emanuele (Manny) chose Australia, sailing here on the Helige Ludwina in 1855.

Naturalised in a ceremony in Clermont in 1868, Manny was a the owner of a watering hole in Charters Towers from 1864 - 1874, no doubt making some good money after gold was discovered there 1872.

Within a few years, his brother Louis was also following in his father's footsteps, as a licensed retail spirit dealer, living on the Palmer, Cook and Hodgkinson gold fields from 1878-79.

The brothers developed a pattern of finding gold, selling it and buying a hotel.

Meanwhile, Louis' Irish bride to be Ellen Keenan, daughter of a soldier, was on her way to Australian shores on board the Fiery Star. They were married at Peak Downs in 1864 and together they followed the mining fields through Queensland.

Legend has it that Louis discovered the first reef of gold at Ravenswood and Ellen was by his side to break a bottle of champagne across the flywheel and christen the lease "Enterprise." The couple sadly lost two children in Charters Towers and Ellen died of nephritis at only 39 years of age in Port Douglas.

The Borghero brothers finally settled in Watsonville and held the license of the Albion Hotel there. Manny was buried there in 1885 and Louis moved to Mareeba and died there in 1907.

ity, Elizabeth Jack eloped with Louis and Ellen's son Emanuele in 1888 and they married in the Hermitage in Brisbane. The Jack family travelled on horseback to Herberton from Port Douglas around 1880 and Elizabeth's father James qualified as a JP before he and wife Martha became storekeepers in Watsonville.

The newly married couple came back to Irvinebank where Emanuele worked as a dairyman and a packer and ran a carrying business between Irvinebank and Herberton, while serving on the Walsh Shire Council, the Jockey Club and hospital committees in his spare time.

Elizabeth moved to Mareeba after Emanuele died in 1924 and in a beautiful gesture, her son Vic pulled the family house down by hand, carted it to Mareeba by bullock wagon and rebuilt it near the river in Walsh Street.

Their daughter Grace caused a sensation when she became Australia's first woman taxi driver in the early 1920's. She and her younger sister Peg decided to take on their father's carrying business and updated his horse and buggy with a 4 cylinder Chevrolet that cost 300 pounds.

Hardly anyone had ever even seen a car back then and no-one knew how to drive one or fix one. It took Grace three days to learn how to operate the contraption and then she kept on driving taxis for the next 30 years, eventually moving the business to

Mareeba, taking on mining jobs and adding a second car."

Soon after the sisters took on ambulance work and during the war had an official pass into the airport to ferry passengers and troops. They met 51 trains per week and never had a single bad debt over 3 decades.

Florence May Murphy married William Victor (Vic) Borghero in 1920 and they spent their lives in Irvinebank, producing 10 children along the way - Florence May, Lesley, Blanche, Victor, Herbert, Morrison, Jenet, twins Elaine and Elva and Lawrence.

Vic worked as a tin dresser at the mill and died just before his 53rd birthday, leaving a 46 year old Flo to care for 6 children alone. She moved to Herberton where she took in ironing and washing to support her family, but sadly the younger children were temporarily made wards of the state.

Once she got her babies back, the Herberton Sisters of Mercy wanted the children to go to the convent school and as Mrs Boghero couldn’t afford it they supplied the uniforms and books and no fees were paid.

Flo worked tirelessly for various Herberton associations and her efforts were recognised in a valedictory article in the Cairns Post when she moved to Cairns in 1954, so Lawrie, her youngest could start an apprenticeship there.

Improved telecommunications for Aurukun and Napranum AURUKUN and Napranum residents can now look forward to new and improved telecommunications services thanks to the Australian Government’s Regional Connectivity Program.

The $90m program is delivering 81 place-based digital connectivity solutions in regional Australia through a range of mobile and broadband services.

The $289,638 project in Aurukun will see an upgrade to transmission and backhaul capacity at Telstra’s 4G base station.

This will see improved connectivity and support for online banking and financial transactions at existing retail busi-

nesses as well as supporting employment opportunities at an industrial estate currently under development in the area.

The $356,908 project in Napranum will establish a fixed wireless network comprising one greenfield 45m tower.

The improved connectivity will enable the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council to deliver services more efficiently, including health, welfare, education, emergency management and cultural heritage programs.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said both projects would certainly boost connectivity in these remote indigenous communities.

“I am thrilled that residents and businesses in Aurukun and Napranum will enjoy the benefits and opportunities that improved digital connectivity brings,” Mr Entsch said.

“These projects will provide people in those communities with access to improved broadband services and data, delivering fast, affordable and reliable connectivity.

“This will help keep our businesses connected, our families stay in touch and mean we can better access health, education and online services on the go.”

Eye in the sky for at risk tree kangaroos INJURED tree kangaroos will now be more easily identified and located thanks to the Tree Roo Rescue Conservation Centre’s new donated drone.

The drone was donated by Inner Wheel Club of FNQ Tablelands through a Tablelands Regional Council Community Grant to help the conservation centre track, find and then rehabilitate injured tree kangaroos.

The Tree Roo Rescue Conservation Centre, located in Malanda, the only centre of its kind in Australia and is indispensable to the rehabilitation of native Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos on the Tablelands.

These Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos can be injured or in distress for several reasons including dog attacks, being hit by cars, or being found in unusual places on the Tablelands away from their natural habitats.

Dr Karen Coombes from the Tree Roo Rescue Conservation Centre said that she is exceptionally happy to have received the drone and the support of local groups and council.

“This is an immense donation it will help us find animals that we would not normally be able to find,” she said.

Spike in child respiratory illness A RESPIRATORY illness similar to COVID has been surging among Far Northern children and parents are being urged to take care and keep their little ones safe.

The Cairns and Hinterland region has recorded a massive spike in Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) since the start of 2021.

There have been 378 confirmed cases of RSV in the far north since January 1, a stark comparison to 88 cases for 2019 and 70 in 2020, 34 of these cases have been reported in the Atherton and Mareeba hospitals.

More than 70 percent of the total cases recorded in the region from January to the start of April this year have been in children under 10 years old.

Cairns Hospital clinical director of paediatrics Dr Neil Archer said RSV was a common virus that generally caused a minor cold-like illness in older children and adults but in younger children it was a common cause of bronchiolitis.

“The symptoms of RSV may include a runny nose, cough, fever, sore throat, and headache but in infants they also may not feed as well, breath more quickly or with more effort,” he said.

“A person with RSV is normally infectious from when they start to show symptoms to 7-10 days after symptoms develop.

“It's particularly important not to send your child to daycare if they are unwell to protect the other children.”

ENTERTAINMENT Mt Garnet raring to go Vintage cars will be on display at the 2021 Atherton Men’s Shed Cruise In.

Cruising in with the Atherton Men’s Shed CAR owners start your engines, the Atherton Men’s Shed will once again be holding its annual Cruise-In on Friday, May 7.

The Cruise-In will allow anyone, members and non-members, to join in for some fun at the Men’s Shed to show off their classic and vintage cars.

The popular car show has been hosted by John Whyte, who is said to be the ‘driving force’ behind the event.

The event is open to the wider community, with free entry and a BBQ available at the venue.

The cruise has been running since 2016 and hosted by Men’s

Shed President Paul Jones this year.

“The Men’s Shed will allow people to bring their cars to show off, there are no restrictions, all cars are welcome,” Mr Jones said.

“We usually get up to 400 people to come along and 70 cars, anyone is able to come along.

“We love to see everyone come along and enjoy the evening with us.”

The Cruise in starts at 5.30pm and ends at 8pm at the Atherton Men’s Shed at 2 Railway Lane, Atherton.

The Mt Garnet Races and Rodeo is set for this May long weekend.

TAKING place over the May long weekend this year, the Mt Garnet Races and Rodeo is only one of a handful of events approved to go ahead and is looking forward to welcoming people for three days full of bull bucking and racing fun.

Running from April 29 until May 2, the weekend long event will showcase rodeo action in the arena as well as horse racing on

Mareeba locals had some gut busting fun recently as a stand-up comedy workshop and performance was held by their friends and neighbours.

Budding Mareeba comedians deliver stellar performance

BY RHYS THOMAS Mareeba residents got the rare chance to see their friends and family in a different light recently as a standup comedy night was held with locals bringing their comedy to the stage.

Australian stand-up comedian Anthony Lamond touched down in Mareeba last fortnight to host a comedy workshop and performance.

After a full day of workshopping and developing their routines, the workshop members were able to present their polished material to an audience later that night.

Mr Lamond was thrilled with the quality of the material presented by the per-

formers stating, “It was the most fun I’ve had on stage since COVID.” “I was absolutely thrilled from where we started off at the beginning of the day to deliver a performance like we did,” he said.

“There were genuine laughs, not sympathy laughs from the audience, I think the audience was extremely pleased with the level of entertainment they got out of the night.

“The energy in the room, the setup of the space, the diverse group of people, it just worked.”

Spring boarding off the back of this successful performance, comedy night organiser Ida Portella is hoping to integrate some of the performers and their stand-

up comedy into her Comedy Tours and possibly some stand-alone comedy nights.

“I’d love to incorporate some of the actors and their standup comedy into some of the comedy tours,” she said.

“If the actors are keen to do it, I certainly think we should do it.

“We had really good feedback from the audience and some of them asked why we haven’t done this before.”

Now with a solid foundation to build off the chance of regular stand-up comedy coming to Mareeba is a high possibility whether it is in the form of a comedy tour, or a once-a-year comedy special.

Raechel Whitchurch, raised in the small NSW towns of Parkes and Broken Hill will spend the next few months promoting “Finally Clear” produced by Matt Fell from HZ studios.

The talented solo artist, competent on the mandolin, guitar, banjo and keys has an alternate and old school country music vibe, with her three career singles “I found home”, “My Father” and “You ain’t one of us” previously been placed on the music network country hot 50 air-

play charts.

Most recently Whitchurch revealed “Don’t be afraid”, the fourth single from her new album.

THE Yungaburra Village Exhibition is now officially open at the Tablelands Regional Gallery, with small artists showing off their incredibly big talent.

The Yungaburra Village Artist Group is a group of artists from the 4884 postcode that come together to share their artwork with each other and the community through exhibition.

Member Alison Faigniez says that there is currently a broad range of art on display at the exhibition.

“We have artwork displayed from 2D paintings on the wall to 3D sculptures and even some jewellery and woodwork,” she said.

“We have this exhibition annually and it allows us to show what we have been working on.”

Mayor Rod Marti opened the exhibition and says that he was impressed by the talent shown by the group.

“I’m always proud of the depth and range of arts and culture talent in our region, and the fact that we have many opportunities to showcase and share this talent,” he said.

The free to view exhibition will be held until May 1 at the Tablelands Regional Gallery in Atherton from 10am-4pm on Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturday.

ON LAND Surviving and thriving in the grazing game the

BY SALLY TURLEY PRODUCERS gathered at an interactive workshop in Mareeba recently to learn how to thrive, not just survive in the northern grazing business. The workshop addressed four aspects of the cattle industry – business tools, succession planning, communication and weather interpretation.

Ian Maclean of Bush Agribusiness presented information from the Business Edge Workshop, the Australian Beef Report, Bush Agribusiness and anecdotal evidence from producers to help establish why people are in the beef business and what constitutes a good business.

He looked at what the top performing graziers across the Tablelands, Croydon, Mckinlay, Richmond, Flinders and Charters Towers shires were doing and analysed what put them ahead of the game. He questioned what was a safe level of equity and whether the business and the family could survive succession.

"In northern Queensland, the top 25% of business performers managed 51% of the cattle herd, 49% of the land area, generated 56% of the beef produced and effectively made all the industry profits," Mr Maclean said.

Why? Because they have more productive herds that con-

verted feed more efficiently resulting in more income/animal; they had more targeted expenditure and used labour more efficiently, with more animal units/ full time staff members.

They ran an average of 6,861 head of cattle, almost double the regional average of 3,774, so they achieved better economies of scale, reduced overheads and managed an impressive $1.29kg liveweight production cost compared to the regional average of $1.89/kg .

When it came to succession however, things were not so clear. With around 5,500 Australians turning 65 each week it has become an issue affecting many families across the country, but workshop participants were advised to think of succession as a process rather than an event.

Mr Maclean announced that only 30% of family enterprises successfully transitioned to the second generation and this reduced to 13% for the third and was down to 3% by the time they reached the fourth generation.

In other presentations, Senior Mental Health Clinician with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Sharyn Bunn talked about the role of communication and stress in family business, specifically the benefits of effective communication and how to avoid barriers to communication.

Natalie Mason and Harry James of Cape York NRM learned a lot at the day long workshop.

Scott Paterson of Alternate Strategies addressed the topic of steering your business through succession, particularly 'Management versus Ownership' succession and addressing the barriers that could retard or even stall the process.

The University of Southern Queensland's climatologist, Dr Chelsea Jarvis said the success or failure of the Australian wet season could make or break a cattle business in northern Australia.

She said the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) was Australia's most important climate driver and that an active phase of the ENSO usually occurred every 3-5 years. Interestingly the 2002 and 2019 ElNino events were both Central Pacific ElNinos and the wet season in much of northern Australia was very poor during both those years.

Dr Jarvis helped participants calculate their Green Date for their location, helped them understand the BOM website and interpret its seasonal rainfall forecast, as well as discussed weather apps that were currently available.

Workshop participant, Millaa Millaa cattle producer, Brigitte Daley said the free interactive workshop was a fantastic day.

"It was a real credit to the organisers, presenters and to everyone involved," she said.

Ms Daley said "Ian McLean from Bush AgriBusiness gave an excellent presentation on interpreting beef business performance and demonstrated Excel-based support tools which would benefit a lot of producers.

He really got producers thinking about how they could improve the profitability of their business."

"Dr Chelsea Jarvis was a dynamic speaker who taught us some really interesting things about weather forecasting and how we can use this information to our best advantage.

"Sharyn Bunn from the Royal Flying Doctor Service gave us some really interesting and helpful ‘take home’ tips about communication in stressful situations, for getting our message through to the people that we have to live, work and deal with.

"We did a succession planning exercise with Scott Pattern from Alternate Strategies which highlighted the ‘real life situations’ we can all face when we want the farm – our whole life’s work to be passed onto the next generation," "The free social dinner which followed afterwards gave everyone the chance to meet the speakers personally and to ‘kick back’ and have a top night," a delighted Ms Daley said.

Quite frankly if Oates had not left his wing then Morgan would have scored that try.

Oates had to leave his wing, and when he did Morgan was able to send Kyle Feldt over to level the score.

Michael, that pass will live in the nightmares of Broncos fans and in the memory of every North Queenslander forever. I’ve watched the 2015 grand final on replay nearly 20 times.

Spill no blood for new road IT seems that there is an endless supply of money when it comes to fighting a virus.

Well it would appear that the Kuranda Bridge has become the latest casualty that has succumbed to the concrete virus.

This being the case then the federal government shouldn’t have any problems injecting funds into building a new road from Mareeba to Cairns as Bob Katter has indicated.

Naturally the Kuranda Bridge would need repairing to make it safe for light vehicle use.

I don’t think there is a need to spend millions just for some outfit to do a study on a new route then years of planning.

Bob really is passionate about getting this done, but please Bob tone it down abit – we don’t want any blood spilt, leave that to Mr Trump.

A wombat what “HAS anyone had the time to read The Express newspaper?

The Mareeba Shire Council and Councillor Davies are proudly claiming a solution to the serious issue of safety on pedestrian crossings.

God forbid how anyone in their right mind would think that changing from zebra crossings to “Wombat” crossings would make them safer.

Never heard of a wombat crossing – nor have I. I believe a wombat crossing involves creating a hump in the road and then. Wait for it. The pedestrians have to give way to vehicles.

How any pedestrians could get an opportunity to cross such a busy road and further more how this could possibly make the crossings safer is beyond belief.

I believe this is going to cost more than a $1,000,000?.

I remind council and anyone interested that creating one lane through Byrnes Street will solve the problem without costing more than a quarter of that sum.

Again I am reminding everyone that currently Byrnes street is one lane on the northern and southern entry/exits so this won’t reduce traffic flow. It will however allow vehicles in both angle and centre park to come out into a space where visibility is good.

It will also get rid of the problem of one lane of traffic obscuring the view of the other lane at the crossings.

Panic in the chemical industry CAN you imagine the panic that must have set in in the Farm Chemical Industry, with their inability to kill off the Fall Armyworm and protect Australia’s crops?

This pest is the most serious thing to hit our Nations farming community and our food production in history, because we are told the caterpillar eats 350 different plants, but we are not told how many of these are our food crops.

The truth is, this pest is yet another World Pandemic, a pest we must beat. and in this case, Science does not have an answer, or they would have beaten it long before it got to us.

It all started in Mexico many years ago, and has quickly spread around the World, as the moth can fly around 200 kilometers a day on the wind.

Farmers tell us that it will not die when sprayed with chemical insecticides when it reaches 25 mm or one inch long, then it becomes an enormous problem for our farmers.

Fall Armyworm loves eating crops that are in the growing stage when they are soft and juicy with low sugar levels in the leaf, and boosted by Urea and other Nitrogen fertilizers.

The caterpillars will eat the crop as it emerges from the soil, giving our farmers no chance, and reducing the ‘National Harvest’ dramatically.

We hear no word from our State or Federal Governments about what they intend to do about this impending national disaster, and The Departments of Agriculture are strangely silent, but they must be extremely concerned.

We are told that some farmers are spraying up to seven times with the strongest poisons at their disposal to get a crop… this is definitely not viable in the long run.

Many people in the street do not know and have not heard of this problem, they just trust in the system to solve everything, and while they can buy their food in the

supermarkets they will not be concerned, but if this new pandemic runs its full term and reduces dramatically our vital food crops, there surely will be much anger and rallies in our cities.

Our present farming food system depends on chemicals that kill almost everything in the ‘Natural System’ and has caused great problems in natures balance as Man pushes forward to feed our growing populations… but is all this really necessary, we should take more care of our planet, especially at this time when everything seems to be going wrong.

There are better ways, more natural methods and there are intelligent farmers and growers proving that ‘Natural Farming’ can be done very successfully, turning out just as much and often more, plus healthier, more nutritious, tastier food, without chemicals and only making a fair profit, because natural farming “does not cost more”, that is just a lie to keep chemical farming afloat in our communities and trick everyone into believing that their poisons do no harm, Natural is always best.

Retired member or not?

IT has been at least 10 years if not more, that we were promised by the LNP Member for the seat of Leichhardt, that he was going to fix cost blow outs and other major concerns expressed by the people in the Far North.

These concern were as follows.

1. The price of fuel compared to areas where competition was evident in other parts of Australia. Result to date – nothing has happened, nil, zilch.

2. Expensive price of electricity would be fixed, no competition up here. Result to date – nothing has happened, nil, zilch.

3. The real killer for people living in the north, the price of household and property insurance. We are constantly reminded that this is because we live in a cyclone area, yet property damage from floods, storms and fires is far greater in other parts of Australia.

When the State Government Insurance Office(SGIO) was operating years ago, insurance right across the board was significantly cheaper.

What has happened since the demise of the SGIO? Insurances have continued to rise steeply. Both State and Federal governments don’t care.

An other promise broken by the Member for Leichardt – nothing, nil, zilch.

4. The greatest dud ever played out by a government on the people of Far North QLD must surely be the con that is NAIF(Northern Australian Industry Facility). This was dreamed up over 5 years ago to deliver record upgrades and help develop this part of Australia with massive pro-

jects. Not one single dollar of some $5 billion has found it’s way here – nothing, nil, zilch.

There is little doubt that a large percentage of constituents in the seat of Leichardt think that the current member had retired some time ago, as we have heard very little about his list of promises over the past 10 years. Seems he has thrown his hat in the ring to stand again.

Adding to the letter to the editor, I would like to express my sincere thanks to departing journalist Phil Brandel for his straight down the middle, more than fair commentary on many subjects.

How refreshing it is today not to be lectured to by many commentators wanting to ram their particular politics down your throat.

There are far to many papers in Australia pushing their particular agendas and nothing else. We need our independent newspapers. All the very best in your new endeavour Phil – we’ll miss you.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has joined AstraZeneca in giving some people worse health problems than they faced from COVID. The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, was planning for vaccination passports several months before the January 2020 Wuhan outbreak.

There is too much that doesn’t make sense about COVID-19 and its associated government irrationalities for it to be coincidental.

The economic, societal and health problems, and $590 million debt, created by our governments’ blind obeisance to the UN’s WHO must never be allowed to happen again.

We have active support and volunteering of major events including the Multicultural Festival, the Rotary Field Days at Kerribee Park where in conjunction with Community Health we intend to conduct men’s health checks at our Field Days site and we also assist numerous local charities via labour and other support for their events and projects.

Staff from Mareeba Hospital and Community have given presentations on Diabetes, last month we learned more about Alzheimers and Dementia last month and we have another presentation on Aged Care Services what are available, where to find assistance, who is eligible etc. and other very important information to have access to as we get closer requiring these services as we age This will be held at Mareeba Mens Shed at the river end of Lloyd Street tomorrow, Thursday, April 22 from 10am.

Brownie Base 2 cups walnuts 1 1/2 cups medjool dates 1/3 cup raw cacao powder 1 teaspoon vanilla paste Pinch of sea salt Caramel Layer 14 medjool dates, pitted 1 cup raw macadamias 1/2 cup pure maple syrup 2 teaspoons vanilla paste Chocolate Layer 1/3 cup coconut oil 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup 1/3 cup raw cacao powder

Method

1. Crush walnuts in a food processor until they resemble fine crumbs. Add the cacao powder, vanilla and sea salt and mix.

Add the dates and process until a sticky dough is formed.

Spoon mixture into a lined square baking tin and smooth with the back of a spoon.

2. To make the caramel layer, process the macadamias in a food processor until they resemble fine crumbs, next add the medjool dates, maple syrup and vanilla paste and process until smooth. Spoon the mixture on top of the brownie base and smooth with the back of a spoon.

3. To make the chocolate layer, melt the coconut oil in saucepan on low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and add the maple syrup, whisking briskly until well combined. Add the cacao powder, stirring until well mixed through. Pour the chocolate on top of the caramel filling and make sure it is evenly spread. Place back into the freezer and let it set completely.

Pool patrons to enjoy extended hours upon works completion MOSSMAN Pool users will enjoy longer opening hours once upgrades and other works are completed later this year.

Aside from the lights Douglas Shire confirmed an “improved entrance to the pool building, general repairs and beautification works are part of the $220,000 project” that started a short time ago and will continue for the next few months.

The pool closed last Saturday and will remain shut until June 18 so the works can be completed.

“The new lights will give us more flexibility with the pool opening hours which have traditionally been restricted to times of sunlight,” Douglas Mayor Michael Kerr said.

“Once the new lights are installed, our local swimmers who want to do laps before or after work when everything is a little bit darker will be very pleased.

“We also look forward to

giving the whole facility a bit of a freshen up with new paint job, landscaping and pool entrance to be welcomed by users.

“I would like to thank the community for their patience while we undertake this important work.”

New poolside seating will also be erected as part of the overall project.

Douglas Shire confirmed the project is being funded through the Queensland Government’s COVID-19 Works for Queensland Program.

Yungaburra triathlon success AFTER a year hiatus, the Yungaburra Triathlon was held on Sunday with more than 450 athletes taking part, including local and interstate competitors.

Although the numbers were down compared to 2019 when the registrations were fully booked at 600, the number of competitors for 2021 was a welcome change for the region and organising committee.

Bulls go down at home THE Mareeba Bulls Premier Mens side was unable to capitalise in their home game on Saturday as they went down 1-nil to the Leichhardt Lions.

The Leichhardt Lions only had one shot on goal and it struck true as they kept ahold of the Bulls on their home turf.

The Bulls were unable to gel together and pull through before fulltime going down against the Lions.

Mareeba Bulls Premier Mens Coach Angelo Tatti said that it was unfortunate coming from a win last week against the Stratford Dolphins to a loss against the Lions.

“It really wasn’t what I wanted but that’s how soccer goes, some days you're switched on and some days you're switched off,” he said.

“I’m a little bit disappointed, we had a good performance against Stratford and then didn't back it up a week later.

“Our second half was a lot better we tried and tried but it was getting to the point where the team was getting frustrated, our execution just wasn’t right.”

The Bulls Premier Ladies went down 2-1 on Friday night in Cairns unable to pull through against the Lions.

The Bulls will take to the road as they face Marlin Coast over the ANZAC Day weekend, while the ladies will have a bye.

Gators claim first win of season

THE Mareeba Gladiators had their first win of the season after facing the Tully Tigers on the road on Saturday night.

After several injuries on Thursday the depleted Gladiators side was not at its strongest going up against the Tigers in their territory.

The game started slow and in the Tigers favour as the Gladiators gave up a 12-nil lead within the first 15 minutes.

The Gladiators stuck it out getting several of their players over the line and despite some silly errors, the away side won the match 28-18.

Mareeba Gladiators A Grade captain coach Trent Barnard was pleased to get the win on the road despite having a weakened side.

“I spoke to the boys during the week that it was going to be a tough road trip, but we really wanted to get three points after Mossman,” he said.

“We wanted to travel down there and make a statement that we can travel on the road and perform.

“The next two weeks of football will be back home against the two top sides, Brothers and Innisfail.”

Mareeba will now face off against Cairns Brothers with a special ANZAC Day game this Sunday, April 25.

THE Atherton Roosters first grade side remains winless after three rounds of the 2021 Cairns District Rugby League premiership competition.

On Saturday night at Atherton, the undermanned Roosters

led 14-12 at one stage before going down 30-24 to the visiting Yarrabah Seahawks.

Both sides crossed for five tries but it was Yarrabah’s successful conversion kicks that proved the difference in the end.

Yarrabah led 12-8 at the break and it was the Roosters who struggled to execute some key chances especially close to their oppositions try line.

Matt Baillie’s try soon after the restart pushed the Roosters in front and they looked to be playing with more purpose.

But a near length of the field intercept try from Yarrabah in the 58th minute sparked the visitors back into the match and they soon had another two on the scoreboard.

Two tries to promoted winger Darcy Lacey pushed the Roosters closer but the clock beat them in their chase to save the points.

The senior Roosters play another home game this Saturday and host Cairns Kangaroos in four grades.

Results of other CDRL first grade games played over the weekend – Edmonton and Mossman drew 26 all, Brothers defeated Ivanhoes 16-12, Mareeba downed Tully 28-18, Suburbs and Innisfail played a 12 all draw.

Cricket greats set for Atherton comedy night

Former Australia cricket coach Darren Lehmann will be a special guest at the cricket and comedy night in Atherton on May 20.

FORMER Australia cricket coach Darren Lehmann and other well-known Australian sports identities will attend a sportsman’s night in Atherton next month as part of a Bulls Masters special double act.

Lehmann, former Aussie Test quick Ryan Harris, Queensland, all-rounder Andrew Symonds and 2GB continuous call panel member Daryl Brohman headline the cricket and comedy evening on May 20 at Barron Valley Hotel. A cricket match featuring Bulls Masters’ players will be held the following day.

“I grew up in Babinda so I love getting back into the region to run clinics and promote the

game,” Former Australia cricketer and Bulls Masters spokesperson Jimmy Maher told The Express.

“Keeping Cricket in the regions strong is so important to Queensland because so much talent comes from the bush.”

“Just look at the 1995 side - myself, Andy Bichel, Carl Rackemann, Dirk Tazelaar, Wade Seccombe and Martin Love were all from regional Queensland.”

All funds raised from the night will go to Atherton Cricket Club.

MAREEBA swimmers got the chance of a lifetime after Olympic gold medalist and record breaker Jessicah Schipper OAM paid the Mareeba Wildcats a visit on Saturday.

Mrs Schipper participated in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics securing several gold medals and breaking records for the 200m butterfly on several occasions.

She also competed in two Commonwealth games and five

world championships over the course of her career before retiring in 2012.

Mrs Schipper was not sure what direction to take after retiring but was glad to be able to stay in the sport she loves, now helping teach and grow the new generation of potential gold medalists.

“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do post-swimming but I knew I wanted to stay involved in the sport, so I got very lucky in securing a job at Swimming Queensland,” she said.
