A LOCAL tour guide from Yungaburra has won the Cultural Connections category at the recent Wet Tropics Tour Guide 2020 competition.

After living in Brisbane and the Gold Coast Karl Buderus moved to the Tablelands and started Yungaburra Tours in 2018. He now conducts tours that highlight key points across the Atherton Tablelands to international and interstate visitors.

their Wet Tropics Tour Guide Program,” he said.

“At the time I jumped at the opportunity to engage in tour guide training.

“The training was both fascinating and rewarding – two days in the classroom, field days in the Daintree and Cape Tribulation.”

This year Karl entered the inaugural Wet Tropics Tour Guide competition which was run in conjunction with the Wet Tropics Management Authority (WETMA) and Savannah Guides winning the Cul-

tural Connections category.

Karl’s competition entry consisted of a six minute video showcasing his tour guiding skills, using the Curtain Fig Tree and Lake Barrine as a backdrop in his video highlighting the special love he has for North Queensland and its native fauna and flora.

“I won a Samsung galaxy tablet and some software on bird calls and bird identification,” he said.

“The Atherton Tablelands has so much for our visitors to explore experience and enjoy.

“I work extremely hard to ensure our guests have a great time.”

Fake Cyclone hits TRC

LAST week a Category 2 cyclone hit the Tablelands, but only about a hundred council staff and emergency workers were aware of it.

The fake cyclone was part of the annual Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) Emergency Disaster Management Exercise.

The exercise brought together representatives from Queensland Police, Queensland Ambulance, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, The Rural Fire Brigade, SES, The Red Cross, Ergon Energy and staff from the TRC. The emergency drill was to see how systems, staff and procedures would work during an actual natural disaster.

Working inside the Community Education and Disaster Coordination Centre on Vernon Street over two days were logistic crews, a call centre, emergency response crews as well as communications and technical support staff, with all the teams put through their paces just as if a real cyclone had hit the Tablelands.

The fake cyclone was called DIVOC (COVID spelt backwards) and initially made landfall about 8.30am on Tuesday November 11. Other emergency’s on the day included an electrical black out, localised flooding, a landslide on the Gillies Range and the loss of NBN. TRC Councillor Bernie Wilce said that they tried to make the trial as realistic as possible including a fake emergency evacuation centre with COVID cases.

“The whole operation was run over two days, the first day was a response to the cyclone and the second day was concentrating on recovery,” he said.

“It’s like be a well-oiled football team, we want to make sure that everybody is on the same team, that the equipment we are

using is up to speed and to iron out any small issues in the systems.”

Cr Wilce said the emergency was a cyclone with cases of COVID with a few other curve balls thrown as a surprise to staff.

“We had an evacuation centre with COVID cases so we had to

organise testing and quarantine,” he said.

“We have 120 people involved including fake evacuees; people ringing to ask questions and fake social media accounts and websites.”

To make the exercise more realistic there were cyclone

tracking maps, realistic weather briefings and people calling the hotline seeking more information on the disaster in their part of the Tablelands.

Some of the other issues that the team had to face included the closing of the Kennedy Highway at Tolga, schools being closed,

trees blocking roads and computer server failures.

Cr Wilce said “It’s excellent timing ahead of the upcoming cyclone season, the amount of interest from the external agencies has also been really strong and it’s been great to watch everybody working together.”

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti is encouraging business to throw their hat in the ring for the 2020 awards.

“The awards are a celebration of the business community’s contribution to the economic and social fabric of our region,” he said.

“It’s been a tough year but our business community has risen to the challenge and con-

tinued to do an outstanding job amid the rapid changes.

“We’re particularly interested in seeing businesses that evolved and adapted during COVID being recognised for the Regional Innovator category.”

Nominations will close on Wednesday, November 25 with the awards being presented at a ceremony on Friday, December 4, 2020.

Council takes control COUNCILLORS from the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) have fired a shot over the bow of council officers and staff with elected councillors rejecting tender recommendations.

At TRC’s October Council meeting, councillors overturned two separate officer recommendations in regards to awarding tenders. One tender was for a gravel re-sheet and one was for the purchase of two tractors and slashers.

Mayor Rod Marti said that Council was focussed on value for money and the overturned purchase decisions saved

Council $120,000.00.

“Council is cognisant of delivering a balanced budget and the necessary purchases reflected the need for ongoing fiscal discipline,” he said.

“It’s Council’s view that the alternative contractor for the re-sheet will deliver the desired quality at a saving, and the alternative supplier will supply machinery that’s fit-for purpose at a saving.”

Mr Marti added that Council’s view was that “finding savings was critically important given ratepayers ultimately underwrote all expenditure,” he said.

“The machinery for the other tender was $49,000 dollars cheaper while still meeting all the criteria that we requested, while council officers had decided to go with the most expensive tender.”

“We went with the second tender; because councillors are pretty focused on finding savings.”

Mr Marti said that for the re-sheeting TRC had three local businesses who tendered for the re-sheet.

“The company that we ultimately went with was the cheapest of all options,” he said

“The company we chose have done work for us in the past and we think we should be going for them because they offered the best value for money.

“For some reason they (council officers) didn’t choose this local business even though they were $70,000 dollars cheaper.”

The officers claimed that the reason they didn’t award the tender to the cheaper option was because their submission wasn’t as detailed.

Mr Marti said that the TRC knew the contractor could do the work because they had

done work for them in the past.

“As councillors we need to tweak the methodology that council officers are using when awarding tenders,” he said.

“They are trying to stick to a methodology and we are saying that value for money and fit for purpose are things that are fairly significant factors.

“If a tenderer was the cheapest option and they had never done that work before it would be too great a risk to take. We don’t see that we have taken any risks by choosing a different tender on these occasions, instead we wanted

value for money and I think that is better for the local community.

“We don’t want to be critical of the officers but if we think the methodology needs re-tweaking which we do following the last meeting, that’s what we are going to do.”

A council insider said that the decisions had affected council officers.

“The overturned decisions have caused a bit of stir in the office and some of the staff aren’t happy and it will probably end up affecting staff morale.”

Ms Lui said she had some major goals for the next few years. “If there was one pet project I would like to see completed during my next term it would be the completion of the Wangetti Trail,� she said. “It’s something I have always been passionate about because I know the type of opportunities that will come once its completed, by bringing more people into the region. “The estimates are that it would inject about 300 million dollars back into the Queensland economy which would be great for FNQ and the Cook Electorate. “I want to see it come to fruition during my second term.�

One of Ms Lui’s promises leading into the recent election was a splash park for both Mareeba and the Douglas Shire. “During my first term we delivered a number of water splash parks for communities

in Cape York, it’s a really good thing to have in communities. “There is no water park in Mareeba so a lot of families have to travel to Cairns.�

Although no location had been set for a potential splash park in Mareeba, Ms Lui said she was looking forward to having conversations with the Mareeba Shire Council. “Now that we are back at work we will be having conversations with council to look at locations and timeframes,� she said. “The money has been committed and I’m looking forward to working with the council to deliver on that promise�

In the seat of Hill, KAP member Shane Knuth has been returned with 52.64 per cent of the primary vote. “Over the next four years I will continue to work for the region and the people of Hill,� Mr Knuth said. “Water security will be one of our main focuses and ensuring that we protect our farming and dairy industries. “We will continue to work with stakeholders to fully seal Ootan Rd within the next four to five years and ensuring that

local contractors are prioritised for government tenders rather than those from the south.�

Mr Knuth said another focus would be expanding capital works to local schools and ensuring that people have access to health services within their own communities.

NEARLY two weeks after Queenslanders voted in the State Election the Electoral Commission of Queensland has finally declared 81 electorates with more declarations expected over the next few days.

For the seat of Cook, Labor incumbent Cynthia Lui was returned with 40.03 per cent of first preference votes.

Ms Lui, who was initially elected in 2017, is the first woman to serve as the Member for Cook and the first Torres Strait Islander elected to any parliament. “I am grateful to the voters who have showed faith in me and in my mission to build stronger communities throughout this diverse electorate,� she said. “I will continue to run mobile offices in Mareeba, Mossman, Port Douglas, Cooktown and all my other communities the length and breadth of the Cook electorate.�

A 4 BILLION year old meteorite, which was stolen five years ago has been found by police in Cairns and returned to its owners.

The 11-kilogram space rock was originally discovered in the Wolfe Creek Crater in Western Australia in 1973 by Stuart Foster. The meteorite was donated to the Crystal Caves Museum in Atherton in 2015 and two weeks later it was stolen.

Ms Ghislaine Gallo, who manages Crystal Caves with her sister Celilia Boissevain, said the thief knew what they were looking for.

“Someone smashed the bottom window in the middle of the night, crawled through grabbed the rock and left,” she said.

“It’s not something that you can easily move like gold or jewellery.”

On Saturday November 7, Queensland Police executed a search warrant at a Cairns address and recovered the space rock, valued at more than $16,000.

Ms Gallo said she was surprised when a police officer called her.

“He said, ‘We've got your meteorite’, and I just went, ‘Yeah, I don't think so, I find that a bit hard to believe’, and he went, ‘Yeah, it’s definitely your meteorite’,” she said.

“The police are being a bit tight lipped as to how they knew the rock was there but they did tell me it was search warrant

specifically for that meteorite.”

On November 12 Cairns police announced that they had charged a man “Cairns detectives have charged a man after locating a missing meteorite during the search of a Mooroobool property earlier this month.” the police spokesperson said.

“Investigations led officers to search the Mooroobool property on Saturday, November 7, where they located the missing meteorite.

“He has since been charged with receiving tainted property and is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on November 25.”

Ms Gallo said there was evidence that the meteorite had been “hacked into” as several small pieces of the rock were missing “They have wedged a couple of piece out of it, maybe they thought they could sell smaller pieces,” she said.

“It’s also covered in mud so we need to give it a good wash.”

Ms Gallo said she would display the meteorite again, but this time she would secure it more thoroughly.

“We are now going to put it behind some very safe glass with all the media exposure it has received.”

CELEBRATE: The Kuranda Traders Association are getting ready for Christmas.

Kuranda Christmas celebration WITH Christmas only six weeks away the newly formed Kuranda Traders Association (KTA) is getting into the Christmas spirit by having a Kuranda Twilight Trading night on Thursday, December 10 with local stores and business planning on staying open until 9pm.

President of the KTA Dei Gould said the idea came from feedback that some people from Cairns, Mareeba and Atherton don’t get to shop in Kuranda as the shops close quiet early.

“With COVID this year and the forming of the Kuranda Traders Association we feel like the dynamics have changed and we needed to do something to help promote the shops and businesses,” she said.

“The community needs something that serves a purpose and showcases some of the fantastic artists and handcrafted

items we have in the village.

“We are asking people to please consider where they buy their gifts this year and support our local businesses where you can.

“Our village has an abundance of great gift ideas and lots of handcrafted items,” said Dei. Even though shops will remain open in the village, due to COVID restrictions some plans for the initiative had to be put on hold.

“Due to COVID restrictions we decided not to go ahead with our planned road closure and entertainment schedule but rather have a scaled down and relaxed evening Christmas shopping experience as per normal but until 9pm,” said Dei. “Cafes (licensed and BYO) will be open all day and throughout the evening and the venues that would normally have live

music during the weekend will be able to have them playing.”

Dei said that local buskers would be taking advantage of the fee free busking licences that the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC ) announced earlier in the year.

“As well as musicians some of our local world renowned artists will be displaying their works both at the Arts Co-op on Coondoo Street and at various pop up shops around the village,” she said.

“The SES has offered their services to provide hand sanitation stations and general assistance around the village along with their First Aid capabilities being available if required.”

Stolen memorial plaque POLICE are investigating after a Merchant Navy plaque was reported stolen from a rock at the Millaa Millaa War Memorial on Thursday morning November 5.

A council worker had drilled holes into a rock at the site and left the plaque sitting on the rock for about 20 mins while he attended to another matter.

Initial investigations suggest that sometime between 10am and 10.20am, an unknown person has attended and removed the plaque.

The crest is described as a black powdercoated plaque with gold writing.

It is approximately 1011cms in size (size of a smart phone) and is cast bronze in the shape of the Merchant Navy Crest, with MN and underneath was written Australia.

Spokesperson for the Millaa Millaa Remembrance Day Committee Margaret Plant said locals started searching parks and creeks in case it has been thrown away.

“In the 20 minutes that he was gone and because it wasn't secure, someone has come along and thought this looks interesting,”' she said.

“We don't know who the

person is or whether it was more than one person or where it has ended up.

“Some of the locals were devastated the crest was missing.”

Less than 48 hours out from Remembrance Day, Margret said that the plaque hadn’t been returned but there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

“Robert from Pantographic Engraving in Cairns heard about the missing plaque and quickly made us a free replacement in time for Remembrance Day,” she said.

“The plaque arrived late on Tuesday night and a TRC workman set the new plaque on the rock with a few hours to spare before Remembrance Day.” “I just really want to thank Robert from Pantographic and his brother who runs Sharlynn B&B for getting it made and getting it back to us so quickly.”

Sacrifices remembered IT has been 102 years since the war to end all wars finally came to a close with the guns across the western front falling silent after four years of warfare.

On the 11th day of the 11th month every year Australian’s pause to remember and reflect those who lost their lives in service to our country, and those

who continue to risk their lives in the armed forces.

Across the Tablelands residents gathered at numerous locations for ceremonies honouring the sacrifices of those brave soldiers.

A ceremony was held at the Arnold Park Cenotaph in Mareeba with many representa-

tives of the numerous armed forces attending and other community members laying wreaths to pay their respects.

After the playing of the last post a minute of silence was observed by all attending before the ceremony drew to a close.

MT MOLLOY REMEMBRANCE Day at the beautiful Mt Molloy Cenotaph surrounds was ablaze with red poppies. The Mt Molloy RSL Sub Branch were overwhelmed by the generosity of people who crocheted, knitted and made felt poppies. Almost 1500 poppies in total for this year’s Remembrance Day Ceremony and their future ceremonial events.

The Ceremony was well attended, and the audience was thrilled to have Bugler Les Doherty play The Last Post and The Rouse. Bagpiper Robert Coleman played during the laying of the wreaths. Students from both Julatten and Mt Molloy State Schools participated in the ceremony with the reading of poems.

A fitting ceremony for those of our men and women who died and suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

Government renews support for RDA THE Regional Development Australia (RDA) Network has been recognised by the Australian Government for their work in driving economic growth, with the government recommitting to the network.

The Network involves 52 RDAs across Australia including one in the far north operating under RDA Tropical North (RDATN).

RDAs work with all levels of government, business and community groups to support economic and workforce development, local procurement, strategic regional planning and to inform programs and infrastructure investments.

A new 4.5 year funding agree-

ment and refreshed charter is in store for the network which was announced by the Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories, the Hon Nola Marino MP last week.

“RDA Tropical North will continue to play an important role supporting the economic recovery of the region as it emerges from COVID,” she said.

“RDAs are a highly valued and respected network of volunteers and staff who drive economic development in our regions.

“They provide critical intelligence back to the Australian Government about key issues impacting local communities.”

RDATN Chair David Kemp-

ton believes that his board will be able to restore, develop and drive growth within the region.

“The value in RDA Tropical North is to advocate regional growth and economic development to the Federal Government,” he said.

“Our board identifies and promotes to all levels of Government those key projects that will restore, develop and drive the growth in our region.

“RDA Tropical North’s Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Strategy will not only see us through the pandemic, but onto stronger economic future with the creation of 3812 jobs and $1.665 billion in annual economic benefit within three years.”

Search is on for biggest mango IT’S on again, The Express Newspaper’s KP (Kensington Pride) mango competition.

Now in its sixth year, the KP Mango Competition invites all farmers from professional or backyarders to drop in their biggest and heaviest KP Mango for the chance to win $500 dollars.

Last year’s winners Sienna and Liam Avolio from Mareeba won with a 1.662kg monster.

Editor of the Express Newspaper Carl Portella said mango season was one of his favourite times of the year.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re farmer with hundreds of trees or you only have one tree in your backyard, this competition is open to everyone,” he said.

“Last year Sienna and Liam were just a couple of kids who happen to have a monster mango grow on their parents farm.

“The best part of the competition is that I get to eat the competition!

“We also want to say a big thankyou to Lindsay Transport, Lindsay Rural and FNQ Growers for their continued support.”

The rules are simple.

The mango must be Kensington Pride variety only. The Mango must be photographed on electronic scales clearly showing the weight.

NAIDOC Week celebrations

NAIDOC week was celebrated across the country last week with the 2020 theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ recognising the efforts and accomplishments of the First Nations people who have occupied and cared for Australia for over 65,000 years.

Playgroup is back After nearly nine months without a playgroup, mums and bubs from around Dimbulah could finally return for a fun day.

Dimbulah Sate School Playgroup had been shut since late March due to COVID but its return on Monday November 10 meant children from 0 to pre-prep could come together for a play and some arts and crafts.

Manager of the Dimbulah Community Centre Grace Armenti said it was a fantastic to see the babies back at playgroup with their families.

“The day was fantastic, it

was great turn out of bubs,” she said.

“It wasn’t just mums, nearly 30 babies turned up with grandparents, mums, dads, aunties and uncles.

“It was great to see all the kids having so much fun and it was a much needed day by the parents and carers.

“The children were excited and had a fun morning and we are all looking forward to next one on the November 23.”

Toy Run gets ready to roar

CELEBRATING its 24th year, the Tablelands Toy Run is back again for 2020. Each year bike owners from across the Tablelands help collect toys for the Salvation Army in Tolga.

The Toy Run will start with a breakfast from 7.30am at the Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade at Tinaroo Falls Dam Road and then it will move onto the Yungaburra markets parking behind the CWA hall to collect more donations. The Toy Run will then proceed to Malanda Falls and then on through Atherton arriving at the Salvation Army

in Tolga at approximately 11am.

Event Coordinator of the Highland Motorcycle Restorer’s Club Don Sheppard said they are not just looking for Toys.

“These days we are finding that there is also a demand for food from the Salvation Army,” he said.

“By all means we are open to toys but there is a demand for tinned and non-perishable food especially coming up to Christmas.

“The main requirement is that the toys must be new and still in original packaging.”.

All toys and food will be donated to the Salvation Army in Tolga and there will also be a Salvation Army van in the convoy allowing people to donate on the day.

Mr Sheppard also said the event is not just for bike owners. “We are hoping to get about 150 bikes and cars, any classic, muscle or retro cars are also welcome to join us on the Toy Run.” he said.

Free hearing checks in Malanda THE Malanda Guardian Pharmacy are offering free hearing checks to the public throughout November, allowing locals to take control of their aural health.

The consults will be available as either in-pharmacy appointments or via tele-screening. For either formats, the Hearing Clinic service will offer free hearing checks along with hearing aid maintenance checks.

All appointments will be undertaken by a hearing advisor from Hearing Australia and, based on the results, patients will be advised whether they need to be referred to a Hearing Australia centre for a more in-depth assessment.

Guardian Chief Pharmacist and Group Manager Health Services, Brinley Hosking, is encouraging members of the Malanda community who think that they or a loved one may be experiencing difficulties with their hearing or may need a hearing aid check-up, to attend the free health screening.

New lychee love “We are interested in learning about food production.

“We want to be self-sufficient and we want to learn as much as we can about how to grow our own food and also learn about sustainable farming, permaculture and agriculture.”

The property has about 160 lychee trees as well as mangos and macadamias. One problem that Craig discovered after moving onto the property was that lychees were coming into season and they didn’t know what to do with.

“We will have about a tonne of lychees to move,” he said.

“We have only been here for six weeks, we are still unpacking and fixing the house up so we weren’t sure what to do.”

A friend recommended that

WHEN Craig Werleman and his wife Ellen Ritchie decided to buy their very first farm at Koah about six weeks ago they knew they were in for a steep learning curve. One question they didn’t know the answer to was, what to do with all of the lychees that were coming into season?

Craig and Ellen bought the farm looking for a tree change after moving up from Cairns.

This is their first time owning and running a farm and they settled on this farm after looking at properties across the Tablelands for the past three years.

Craig said they brought the property due to its amazing soil.

“We want to do multicropping as we would like to know where our food is coming from,” he said.

put their hand up which was roughly equivalent to 6 tonnes of Lychees,” she said.

“Unfortunately we won’t be able to supply everyone.

“We had a similar situation with tomatoes a few weeks ago when we helped moved over a tonne of tomatoes in two

weeks.”

Craig said he was grateful for the help and hopped that Angela could continue to help sell their produce in the future.

“We were looking for someone to help us with sales and not rip us off, so it’s great that we found Angela,” Craig said.

We need change

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with Phil Brandel’s article on abolishing state governments (10/11).

Peter Beattie advocated similar when he was premier in 2001 and more recently.

Just imagine if all departments were national entities – Education, Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Laws, Taxes, Health, Transport and Main Roads.

Transport is an abomination for transport drivers with varying state rules for licences, log books, etc.

This latest debacle of Premiers closing borders illegally is positive proof to abolish the states (Section 117 of Australian Constitution).

Australia should also have Regional Councils written into the Constitution.

In the meantime, rather than advocate for another state, Queensland needs this State Government to make some changes to acknowledge the 23 out of 93 electorates north of Maryborough and perform for all of Queensland not just the south east 70 electorates.

With Queensland having had twenty six years of a Labor Government, it is very disappointing that far northern voters still chose to vote for a Brisbane centric government when there are very few politicians working for the far north.

The “garbage” scripts should have caught the eyes of responsible community bodies beforehand but went completely unnoticed until my request to Councillor Graham to inspect the vandalism with me and have it removed.

It begs to guess who many of the uncouth vandals would take up arms in defence of the best country in the world they inhabit were the call of arms be directed on them. I might suggest there would be more white feathers posted than one can count.

Violation of the Cenotaph is becoming an increasing problem. “Lest We Forget” will serve well for this recent spate and be unlikely to be forgotten since it was on display on Remembrance Day. It is time vandals were brought to account and pay the penalty for their low life crimes.

New NQ state is long overdue

PHIL Brandel (The Express, 11/11) will be unsurprised that I don’t agree with his views on Australian states.

Please permit me to explain.

Life on Earth is based on a competition model. Species compete with other species for space and resources.

Individuals within species compete with other individuals. The fittest and strongest survive to breed, and the species continually improves.

In the human context on a macro level nations compete internationally. States compete within nations. Removing a level of internal competition does nothing to improve a nation’s fitness and strength at the international level. How weak would senior NRL players would be without fighting their way through junior league?

More Australian states, each with about a million people, would better enable the societal input into governance that makes western democracies so successful. Nearly everyone in FNQ complains of the poor treatment we get from the remote and aloof Brisbane government. How would being an even smaller fish in a much bigger pond begging a Canberra government be an improvement?

The states should naturally compete to attract entrepreneurs and maximise the potential of human initiative by creating low-tax, lowcompliance-cost business environments. Those states would prosper and have the money to maintain the forests and reefs, provide health care and schools, etcetera.

Additional state governments does not automatically mean an increase in the total size of the governments we in NQ pay for. Those in a new North Queensland state wouldn’t be supporting the public sector of the South Queensland state any more than we support Victoria’s public servants.

It is up to the ruling party

of the day to decide on the size of a state’s public sector. We’ve seen this with the bloating Queensland public sector under Palaszczuk. We saw the opposite when the Newman government downsized the public sector.

If we want the freedom to prosper we need small, easily-contained governments.

Centralising government power facilitates crony-capitalism - rules made to benefit a government-favoured business sector. It’s a short step from there to fascism and then to totalitarianism.

Additional states are an effective hedge against centralised totalitarianism. Imagine if Dan Andrews had been PM during the coronavirus panicdemic? We’d still be in lockdown over a rarelyfatal flu variant while a tyrant wielded medical wrongology to devastate businesses.

It pays to be suspicious of those who peddle the centralisation of power. They may merely be ignorant of how we created the greatest society to have ever existed. Or they may be anti-humanists who don’t trust others to make their own decisions. Such people have caused the downfall of societies throughout history.

A new state in NQ is long overdue, as is a New England state in NSW. The Australian Constitution provides for it. Let’s get on with it. Let’s gift ourselves a lean, efficient, light-touch government – and contain the totalitarians amongst us.

One change can make Australia Fare

THE debate as to whether to change the Australian National Anthem has been going on since the English first stepped foot upon this Great Southern Land 250 years ago. Back then Captain Cook would have sung God Save the King.

Throughout history, Advance Australia Fair has been subject to the odd tweak removing references to ‘Britannia ruling the waves’ and changing ‘Australian sons let us rejoice’ to ‘Australians all let us rejoice’.

What a lot of dinosaurs (people who reject change) forget is that Advance Australia Fair hasn’t been our national anthem for very long, in fact we have had a few National Anthems.

Prior to 1974 “God Save the Queen” was Australia’s national anthem.

In 1974 the Whitlam government performed a nationwide survey, to determine which song would be sung on occasions of national significance.

“Advance Australia Fair” was chosen and was enshrined as the national song.

In January 1976 the Fraser government reinstated “God Save the Queen” for royal, viceregal, defence and royal toast occasions, and made plans to conduct a national poll to find a song for use on ceremonial occasions when it was desired to mark a separate Australian identity.

In 1977 Australia held a plebiscite to officially decide on Australia’s National Anthem, voters were presented with the following choice: “Against the background that ‘GOD SAVE THE QUEEN’ is the NATIONAL ANTHEM to be played on Regal and

Vice Regal occasions, electors may indicate their preferences as to which of the tunes of the songs listed below they would prefer to be played on other occasions.”

The four songs that were put to vote via plebiscite, were God Save the Queen, Advance Australia Fair, The Song of Australia and Waltzing Matilda.

Now the debate as to whether we should change the National Anthem to be more inclusive has been raised again, with plenty of dinosaurs who are opposed to any sort of change having conniptions.

Some have suggested the small and subtle change of “we are one and free” instead of we are “young and free” so as to include and acknowledge 60,000 years of prior settlement.

The lyric change has gained increasing attention as multiple Indigenous NRL players refuse to sing the anthem as they say it does not reflect their story as First Nations people.

If we want to take the argument one step further does Advance Australia Fair, really mean anything to us in 2020? When was the last time you used girt in a sentence? Or when was the last time you toiled?

We need a song that includes black and white history. If only there was a song that mentioned the dream time, the prison ships, the diggers, Albert Namatjira, Clancy of the overflow and Ned Kelly.

If only there was a song where we could share a dream and sing with one voice “I am, you are, we are Australian.”

Paniagua – the peoples horse wins again

AFTER winning the Cairns Cup and coming off a 79 day spell $600 super horse Paniagua came home all guns blazing on Sunday in the CCC QUAL/CUP OPEN Hcp in Cairns on Sunday.

The four-year-old bay gelding was bought by Mareeba Trainer Alex Malliff for only $600 and even though Paniagua was meant to race two weeks ago in Innisfail, Mr Malliff said Sunday was always the plan.

“We scratched him in Innisfail because it would have been like racing on concrete,” Alex said

in Brisbane for the Country Cup Final on the December 5.

“Bonnie Thompson rode him today (Sunday) and she is already booked to ride him in Brisbane,” he said.

For a horse that Alex bought for $600 dollars, Paniagua has now won over $165,000 dollars.

“People that I have never met are coming up to me in the street and asking about him.”

On Sunday Paniagua started at $3.50 and shorted as the the favourite into $2.30 at the jump.

“Today was always the plan and it was an awesome win, it’s the only way to describe it,” he said.

Alex said that even though the track was a soft 5, Paniagua missed the jump by about a length and a half and had a tough job ahead of him.

“He had to make up that ground around the outside and in the straight and won by a third of a length,” he said.

“The race was 1400 metres and I was absolutely wrapped; this horse is something special.”

Nashos Inter-branch shoot success THE Tableland Nashos held a day full of fun and shooting with their Inter-Branch Rifle Shoot being held on Saturday, November 7.

23 shooters attended the day at the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA) Ravenshoe and Distract Branch range with friendly competition being had and trophies up for grabs.

Three branches of the Nashos came together including the Tableland Branch, Innisfail

Rookie of the Year Stephen Price.

Branch and the Cairns Branch with some other non-Nashos members competing.

The Tableland Branch came out on top with an average score of 179 to beat out Innisfail in second and Cairns in third.

The Top Nasho Marksman Trophy was awarded to Lorry Calleja of the Innisfail Branch with a score of 244.3 while the Highlanders Trophy for nonNasho members was awarded to Adam Russo with a score of 241.

THE Tableland Competition Car Club’s annual Presentation of Trophies was held on Saturday night at Herberton’s Tepon Motor Speedway.

Although having the regular season shorten due to the COVID, the club managed to put in an amazing effort to get the drivers back racing.

Saturday nights major award was presented to A grade driver Lucy Reed who was named 2020 Driver of the Year.

This is the second time in the clubs 52 year history that a lady driver has won the top award with the first being Sonia Day back in 2013.

Lucy has been racing for nine years and was driving a XF Falcon 250 when she first started, a car she shared with her husband Terry McFarlane.

“We raced at both the Herberton and Mareeba tracks

for four years before settling on being regulars at Tepon,” Lucy said.

“There is a great happy group of people here and I just love how everyone helps each other out on race day to keep the cars on the track.”

During her time at Tepon, Lucy held the position of president for three years and worked her way through the grades to be an A-grade driver for the last three years.

Speaking on her top award Lucy said she was over the moon and very honoured to be Driver of the Year.

“I didn’t expect this and when my name has read out I was stuck for words,” she said.

“My car performed really well this year and that is thanks to my partner Terry who now looks after the mechanical side of things.

Bulls celebrate FNQ awards FNQ Football held a downsized individual awards presentation on Saturday night, November 14 at the Oaks Resort in Cairns.

The Mareeba Bulls came home with a swag of trophies to cap off a memorable season.

Premiership and Crad Evans winning coach Dennis Allen was rewarded for his team’s outstanding season while Men’s Second Division coach Tyson Tatti and Youth Coach Luciano Avolio accepted the same award for Coach of the Year.

In the highly competitive “Best Player of the Year” category Mareeba’s Ray Guest from the Premier Colts Division proved consistency pays off and was too good for the rest of the field.

Mareeba’s goalkeepers were in the thick of the awards with Golden Gloves being awarded to Tyson Tatti in the Men’s Second Division, James Dalziel in the Premier Colts and Joshua Leporati for the Premier Reserves.

The Highest Club Goal scorer across all divisions was Damien Wildman in the Men’s premier Reserves.

Considering all the hardships this year with COVID, the Bull’s had another successful year. The new crop of youthful players in both Men’s and women’s coming through the ranks means another successful season in 2021 is more than likely.

Mareeba Bulls players and coaches won a swag of awards on Saturday night at the FNQ Football awards presentation.

Mareeba on losing streak MAREEBA cricket has kept their unfortunate losing streak with both second and third grade both falling on the weekend.

Thirds faced town rivals Atherton at Borzi Park on Saturday with Atherton going in first to bat, early wickets and tight bowling tied Atherton up but they were able to squeeze a win over Mareeba.

Seconds didn’t have much luck either going against Barron in Trinity Beach on Sunday in scorching conditions.

Mareeba won the toss and put themselves in to bat which proved to be a difficult task with the top four falling for a combined 20 runs between them.

Some middle to lower batting set Mareeba up for a total with Brendan Falvo and Brett Stallen making 25 and 33 respectively.

Mareeba then set out to tie Barron up and snag some early wickets which proved difficult after some tough calls by the umpire.

Captain Brendan Payne had the first breakthrough after a snick to gully and wickets fell regularly after that.

Mareeba was unable to capitalise however with Barron passing their score with 9 overs left to go.

First loss of season for Atherton ATHERTON’S unblemished record in the Cricket Far North competition came to an end on Saturday with the side going down to Norths at Griffiths Park on Saturday by 3 wickets.

Electing to bat first, Atherton got away to a shaky start against some quality bowling from Norths spinner Chris Stanger who accounted for the top order to have Atherton on the back foot 4-68.

The return of Brendan Nasser and Pete Sceresini to the side bolstered the middle order and their 98 run partnership restored some respectability to the scoreline with Atherton closing their innings all-out for 188. Pete Sceresini top-scored for Atherton hitting 61 runs off 66 balls.

In response, Norths kept level with the run-rate throughout much of the match whilst holding the upper hand with wickets-

in-hand. Michael Salerno was the best of the bowlers, snaring the wickets of both opening batsman and a valuable third wicket.

Brendan Nasser sparked life into the field with a direct hit run-out and some close chances in the field kept pressure on the opposition. Paul Nasser 2-36 and Tom Boorman 0-24 supported well with the ball keeping the game in the balance to the final stages before Norths passed the target in the 39th over.
