Shining up smiles for over two decades

BY RHYS THOMAS OSCAR Marroquin has spent over two decades making the smiles of Tablelands children, bigger, brighter and whiter and now he has decided to put down the dental tools in place of some gardening tools.

After 22 years as a dental therapist servicing Mareeba, Atherton, Malanda, Millaa Millaa and nearly every other Tablelands school, Oscar has decided to retire after a lifetime in dental.

Born in El Salvador in 1953 Oscar worked incredibly hard to secure his dental license to become a dentist, however after immigrating to Australia in 1989 he could no longer pursue this career.

With the language barrier being too great, Oscar instead chose to walk down the path of a dental technician before becoming a dental therapist.

“I would have loved to have become a dentist is Australia but the language barrier was too much,” Oscar said.

After studying in Brisbane for the number of years Oscar got his first placement as a dental therapist on the Tablelands, and he hasn’t moved since.

From Dimbulah to Butchers Creek there wouldn’t be a child or parent who wouldn’t know of Oscar and his dental van.

Even though he was

no longer a dentist, Oscar loved helping kids develop healthy oral hygiene habits and watching them grow before his very eyes.

“I really enjoyed becoming a dental therapist to work with children,” he said.

“I discovered that I enjoyed working with the kids and changing their bad habits and behavior and develop better ones.

“Seeing them change from being at the door of your dental van screaming “no mum I don’t want to go” to sitting down and being confident in you and cooperating is amazing.”

Now after 22 years Oscar has decided that it is time to retire and say goodbye to the children and the schools her serviced.

“To me it was a great privilege to serve all the Tablelands schools as their dental therapist over the years,” he said.

“When I see some of the children all grown up with nice, beautiful teeth it makes me very happy and proud.

“I want to thank all the parents and the community for putting their trust in me and allowing me to give oral treatment to their children.”

Oscar would like to thank everyone he has worked with over the years but a special mention to the late Dr Robert Zanata, who encouraged Oscar to keep pursuing dental work.

Support ramps up for Kuranda bypass road

FEDERAL Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch has openly declared his support for the Kuranda Bypass Road (Bridle Track) in an address to Parliament last Monday evening.

In a public address to members of the house Mr Entsch not only declared his support for the bypass but also called out the Queensland Government on their “incompetence and negligence” in relation to the Kuranda Barron River bridge.

The Kuranda Barron River bridge has been identified as being in a shocking state of disrepair with engineers identifying significant problems to the structure six years ago, issues which the Queensland Govern-

ment did “nothing to address.”

“Not only were the Queensland Government aware of the gravity of the situation for more than five years, shockingly, they did absolutely nothing to address it,” Mr Entsch said.

“This time the Queensland Government can’t blame anyone else for their own incompetence and negligence, this is on them.

“It’s now time to explore and invest in alternative routes to connect Cairns with the tablelands, such as the Bridle Track (Kuranda Bypass Road) proposal.”

Kennedy MP Bob Katter and Member for Hill Shane Knuth have welcomed the

support of Mr Entsch for the Kuranda Bypass Road (Bridle Track).

Mr Katter and Mr Knuth are calling on the Queensland Transport Minister to fast-track the completion of the study into the proposed new highway between Cairns and the Tablelands.

In May 2021 it was announced that a $1.6 million planning study would be launched to investigate the capacity, safety, and efficiency improvements of transport routes between Cairns and the Northern Tablelands.

As of now the study is still ongoing but both Mr Knuth and Mr Katter have said it needs to

be completed soon.

Mr Knuth has written to Queensland Transport Minister Mark Bailey, requesting the fast tracking and completion of the study as well as an estimated completion date.

“A new inland highway will save Tablelands and Cairns motorists 30 minutes in travel time when compared to the existing route, and it would allow greater production in agriculture and mining,” Mr Knuth said.

“I believe fast tracking the completion of the study is of vital importance to ensure the State Government can take advantage of the Australian Government’s $4.9 billion Roads of

Strategic Importance (ROSI) initiative.

“I understand the Federal Transport Minister would seriously consider any approach by the Queensland State Government requesting funding for the alternative route.”

Mr Katter has been advocating for a new road to connect the Tablelands and Cairns since the Barron Bridge was identified to be unsafe.

“The people of Cairns, Mareeba, the Tablelands, the Cape and the Gulf are sick and tired of waiting up to 15 minutes at the Barron River bridge,” Mr Katter said.

“The fact our national highway is down to one lane is a

disgrace, we cannot transport our agricultural and mining goods cost-effectively with substandard roads.

“So, I am urging the State Government and the Transport and Main Roads engineers, who do a fantastic job, to speed up the study.”

The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has also come out and openly declared their support for the proposed Kuranda Bypass Road (Bridle Track) and is asking the Queensland Government to “properly assess a better route between Mareeba and Cairns to provide the region with some security for its growth and development.”

brations, so traffic will be stopped occasionally between 9am and 3pm over this four-week period,” he said.

“Because traffic vibration adversely impacts repair quality, stopping traffic intermittently in both directions for up to 15 minutes, if required.

“We would prefer if we did not have to stop traffic over the

bridge for short periods of time, but that is not an option based on the work we need to complete.”

In the meantime, TMR is continuing their $2.1 million planning study looking to identity a long-term solution for the Barron River bridge.

It is undecided whether a new bridge should be constructed or the current one rehabilitated.

Tablelands gift cards activated Fresh St Market IGA workers Barbara Moses-Fahey, Matt Bowles and Shirley Ford with the new shop Tablelands gift cards.

AFTER months of preparation Tablelanders can now use the new Shop Tablelands gift cards in over 70 local businesses with

the cards and terminals recently being activated.

The cards act as mini visa cards with their own limit that you yourself can set, when buying the cards, you can decide just how much money to put on the card, this amount can range from $10 to $1000 depending on what you want to buy and where.

A vast range of local businesses have gotten on board from hair studios to grocery stores and even childcare centres have thrown their hats in the ring to be a part of this initiative.

The cards are a product of the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce with assistance from the Tablelands Regional Council who supplied the funding for the cards through a grant.

ATCC president Bree Hargraves said that she first saw

these cards being used in Dubbo and thought to adopt the same format on the Tablelands.

“I started researching and found a couple of companies that offered that same process,” she said.

“It’s keeping the money local, it’s a great gift idea when you’re not sure what that person really wants.”

The cards operate on a closed loop system meaning the money can only be used at participating businesses and not withdrawn, keeping the money in local hands.

Fresh St Market IGA in Atherton in among many of the businesses who have decided to get involved in this new initiative, actively selling the cards instore.

“We are a big advocate for the Atherton Chamber's Shop

Local program,” a Fresh St Market IGA spokesperson said.

“Given we have such a big customer base we thought it was a great option to provide our customers, as well as showcase a great initiative from the chamber.

“The great thing about the Shop Tablelands gift cards are they keep funds within our community across a variety of great businesses, it's locals supporting locals at its finest.”

Currently Fresh St Market IGA and Summers News in Atherton are the only two registered businesses that sell the cards with more businesses set to sign up.

The ATCC has already been in talks with surrounding chambers including Ravenshoe, Malanda and Mareeba to get involved in the program.

Crime Stoppers reach out for missing persons info CRIME STOPPERS is well known as a way for people to report crimes with the protection of anonymity, however a little known fact is that they also assist the police with missing persons cases.

After a certain amount of time has passed in a missing persons case, before the case gets moved to the coroners, it is passed along to Crime Stoppers in a last plea for information.

The most recent case is of Allison Bernard who disappeared at an Archer River quarry in 2013, this case has been passed down to Crime Stoppers for a last plea of information.

“Some people for whatever reasons don’t want to approach police so you go out there as a community volunteer and mix in with the community, you hand out the flyers saying if there is anyone out there with information please come forward.”

As Crime Stoppers is 100 per cent anonymous people can report crimes or information relating to crimes without the fear of being reprimanded.

Far North District Crime Group acting detective inspector Kevin Goan said that with the

passage of time, some people come forward with information relating to ongoing cases.

“What we find over time is people who may have reluctant at the time of the disappearance to come forward, with changing circumstances they are less reluctant,” he said.

“A platform such as Crime Stoppers where they can report what they know anonymously without risk of being identified, people tend to come forward.

“Mladen’s time up in Coen and the Archer and Lockhart was as a result of a request from the investigators for Crime Stoppers assistance.”

School leader gives back to community

Malanda State High School Captain Nikki Brown was recognised for National Student Volunteer Week last week. Not only is Nikki school captain but she is an active and passionate volunteer of the SES in her community.

YOUNG people across the region celebrated National Student Volunteer Week (NSVW) last week, with special recognition being made to Malanda State High School (MSHS) School Captain Nikki Brown.

NSVW has been highlighting young volunteers in Queensland since 2013, with the support of Volunteering Australia.

Nikki said that she has been volunteering for the Malanda SES since mid last year, and said enjoys it more and more every day.

“I learnt about the SES when they initially came to my school in Grade 10, and when I turned 16 (the age you can apply for the SES) I took up that opportunity,” she said.

“I haven’t had as much experience yet but through training and i have really enjoyed the courses they’ve taken me through.

“Everyone in the SES is amazing and it is so easy to settle myself in with them.”

Nikki said that she highly recommends young people to volunteer, especially the SES. “To me it’s all about supporting locals and putting myself out there and it has become a part of who I am,” she said.

“I really recommend doing SES and I am so happy and grateful I got a hold of it when I did.”

Mara Basanovic, CEO of Volunteering Australia, said that NSVW has and will continue to highlight the contributions of students across the region to the community.

“Young people are a strong and enthusiastic cohort of volunteers who through their passion, innovation and drive open new models for volunteering,” she said.

“Their genuine concern for others and the environment, and unsurpassed energy and willingness to explore and embrace technology have opened exciting new possibilities for volunteering.”

Crime Stoppers wind farm walk returns Community Bank Mareeba

The annual Crime Stoppers fundraising walk is back again this Sunday and this time with some added features.

LOCALS will be up at the crack of dawn this Sunday as the annual Crime Stoppers fundraising walk returns and there is still time to get involved.

The walk was initially done to support the newly established Crime Stoppers Far Northern Volunteer Area Committee (VAC) with fundraising, but to also engage with the community.

Taking place at the picturesque Mt Emerald Wind Farm this Sunday, August 22 the walk raises money for Crime Stoppers while providing some fitness and

breath-taking views.

VAC committee member Norma Moloney is encouraging people to get involved and participate in the fundraising walk.

“2020 was the first year we ran the walk so didn't really have any expectations,” she said.

“We knew there would be a lot of interest but to have 118 walkers in total for our first year was amazing.

“We live in a beautiful part of the world so why not get out and explore it whilst supporting a non-for-profit organisation.”

The time of the wind farm walk has been changed this year to coincide with the sunrise, with option for an amateur photo competition this year as well.

There are two available walks open for people, first is the initial Mt Emerald Wind Farm walk but there is also the option of the Rocky Creek Igloo walk along the rail trail.

Always a hard worker and a quick learner, Uli started in the travel industry in 1984. She bought her first agency in Atherton in 1992 and by 2001 expanded her business to include agencies in Mareeba and Char-

“My all-time favourite though, was when I was won a spot on the “Round Table” for being in the top 10 agencies of the Travelworld Group Australia wide. We were flown business class to Scotland and treated to a private dinner inside Edinburgh castle.

“Once seated at the extravagant banquet table, the Queen's piper, piped in the haggis at the commencement of a night filled with eating, drinking and dancing. That was as close as I ever got to feeling like a member of the royal family,” she joked.

And of course there were plenty of challenges along the way.

“We survived the September 11 tragedy and the closely linked collapse of Ansett airlines in 2001; the SARS (Severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak that emerged in China in 2003; several wars across the planet

and the Global Financial Crisis in 2008.

“But nothing has had the devastating impact on the travel industry that we have suffered under COVID 19. COVID has caused both a sudden halt in international visitation and restrictions on domestic mobility.

“Since COVID began, we have had to cancel over $8 million worth of travel and the random, recurring outbreaks have caused a lot of false starts. Everything settles down, clients feel confident enough to book travel again and then by the following week, the whole political climate has changed and we have to cancel and refund bookings.

“Its a real punch in the gut every time and so disappointing for all involved. For the last 17 months, we have had to work for next to no income, but have still had to pay all our overheads while working harder than ever in a much more high stress environment.

“People keep asking me why I don't just walk away. I could do that, but that would leave our 400 plus loyal clients stranded with credits in locations all around the world and no-one to turn to for help.

“We want to be there for them and we want to still be here when this passes, which it eventually will, because at the end of the day, we get so much joy and satisfaction from helping people realise their travel dreams.

Iconic local dealership prepares to move

AFTER 35 years servicing the Atherton Tablelands and surrounds, John Cole and his team at John Cole Toyota and Isuzu UTE are spending their last few weeks at 28 Tolga Road in Atherton.

From humble beginnings in 1985 when the Toyota dealership was run out of a small donga with a crew of five, to the current state with over 45 staff across three sites, the now ready dealership at 7813 Kennedy Highway (on the left as you exit the Tolga scrub), is a dream come true for the local businessman and his team.

The new Toyota and Isuzu UTE facility intends to bring a first-class automotive and guest centric experience to the tablelands.

Mr Cole engaged the skills of local development specialists Max Slade of Max Slade Designs, and Royce Slade at KEIR QLD, to manage the project due to their prior automotive build experience and shared interest in “supporting local businesses and community developments”.

This locally owned and operated team recruited more than 20 suppliers and subcontractors

within the Atherton community to help complete the build.

“We wanted this to be a local project, where much of the development was completed by local contractors. Ensuring that the investment would go straight back into the community that has supported us for over 30 years,” said Mr Cole.

The team will start to transition to the new location mid-August, and hope to be fully operational from September, except for the Body and Paint Centre.

This will remain in its current location until the new building is completed late in the year.

Long-awaited new crossing for Shanty Creek completed

The Shanty Creek causeway in Mareeba has been recently upgraded replacing the old gravel crossing with a new concrete one.

THE Shanty Creek causeway in Mareeba has been given a new lease on life after the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) completed upgrading the causeway to prevent the regular washout of the previous causeway.

During the wet season or any spat of wet weather the Shanty Creek causeway would end up washed out due to the previous rock and gravel material.

Now a new concrete causeway has been installed jointly

funded by MSC and the Australian Governments Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said that with the construction of the new causeway, it has become safer and more reliable.

“The project involved significant technical planning due to the creek flow,” she said.

“The works were completed within the expected timeframe with minimal disruption to the

community.

“The Shanty Creek causeway now provides a safer and more reliable crossing.”

The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has been advocating for this causeway to be put in place for a while, as they view the road and areas as a “tourist road.”

“We’ve been advocating for this causeway to help tourists as they visit Jacques and the Golden Drop Winery and heading

back into Mareeba,” Chamber president Joe Moro said.

“It’s all about improving the connectivity between Bilwon and the Biboohra area.

“Down the track we would like to see that road completely sealed but we are very happy to see council has done the Shanty Creek Road causeway.

“Any more improvements that can be done would be better for people to use that road as a tourism road.”

Water woes washed away A new 500 kilolitre water reservoir has been constructed for the Chillagoe township to utlilise.

CHILLAGOE residents can look forward to bigger and better water security with the new 500 kilolitre water reservoir being completed.

For years Chillagoe has been suffering from poor water infrastructure keeping the residents on seemingly permanent water restrictions.

Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) seeked to change that with the construction of a new water reservoir that was commissioned nearly a year ago.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said the completion of the reinforced concrete reservoir provided Chillagoe with a level of water security not previously enjoyed by the vulnerable community.

“The higher capacity 500KL reservoir located near Hill Street replaces the two 190KL steel reservoirs which previously existed in Chillagoe,” she said.

“In addition to boosting the usable holding capacity, the

new reservoir meets all cyclone rating standards and provides greater capacity for fire-fighting purposes and potential drinking water, strengthening the township's resilience in disaster situations.

“The reservoir also provides greater water security for small business, beef, mining and tourism, the main industries in the Chillagoe area, establishing greater economic stability.”

Cr Toppin said delivery of the project was the result of Council's strong advocacy to achieve greater water security and economic development for Chillagoe, especially given the township's vulnerability to drought.

The two 190KL reservoirs that previously served the Chillagoe area were leaking and at high risk of failure, they were decommissioned and removed following construction of the new reservoir.

QUEENSLANDERS are being encouraged to take to their local streets, beaches, bushland and waterways this August to October for the annual Great Northern Clean Up. The Great Northern Clean Up is a younger sibling of Australia’s largest environmental day of action, Clean Up Australia Day and has been running since 2009.

Since being founded the Great Northern Clean Up have been giving communities in the hotter, dryer north the opportunity to participate in clean up events in the area’s cooler months, after the peak tourist period and before the cyclone season.

Clean Up Australia chairman, Pip Kiernan, says there is no better time to step up to clean up then now.

“Local environments have been impacted by increased uptake of single-use, disposable items,” she said.

“We need to tackle the surge in items such as takeaway coffee cups, food packaging and masks.

“All of which have polluted our local parks, bushland, streets, waterways and beaches.”

In response to COVID addi-

tional conditions have been put in place to ensure the health and safety of Clean Up volunteers.

Set limits to volunteer numbers per event and Clean Up kits now include QR codes for registration on the day have been introduced, plus bags and gloves for every volunteer.

“This country now produces 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, equating to 100kg per person, of this, only 13 per cent of plastic is recovered and 84 per cent is sent to landfill,” Ms Kiernan said.

“More concerningly, around 130,000 tonnes of the plastic we consume leaks into the environment each year.

“By planning ahead and signing up to a Great Northern Clean Up event, you are making a pledge to help conserve the environment for the long-term future.”

100 per cent of funds raised through donations are allocated to the provision of educational resources and clean up materials provided free of charge to community, school and youth groups across the nation, all year round.

Book depicts migrant story familiar to many locals Local author Debra Gavranich has put the migrant journey of her mother on paper, a story that resonates with many residents of the far north.

A FAR NORTHERN author has released a book depicting her mothers immigrant story from Croatia to the cane fields of the north, a story that resonates with many residents of Far North Queensland.

Debra Gavranich grew up on a sugarcane farm near Mossman and currently resides in Cairns, however both of her parents were born on the Croatian Island of Korcula.

Her new book ‘The girl who left’, published by Wild Dingo Press, follows the brave, true story of her mother’s immigration to Australia in the 1950s through a proxy marriage.

A proxy marriage is not an arranged marriage as many believe it to be, Debra’s mother married her father while he lived in Australia and she lived in Croatia, however they were from the same village and knew each other through family.

Mrs Gavranich said that she has always felt compelled to write her mothers story, and her new book is the result.

“Ever since I was a little girl I have always wanted to write this story, but life gets in the way,” she said.

“Three years ago, I was able to cut back my work to four days a week and Wednesday was my day off, so it became my writing day.

“In the day two to three years I’ve devoted my day off to writing this story.”

The true story mentions many areas and prominent families from Far North Queensland including in and around the Ta-

blelands.

Mrs Gavranich’s book has made waves across Australia with it recently making the list for the August Great Monthly Read 2021 by Collins Booksellers.

The book has already seen massive success with the first two releases being sold out within weeks with a third on the way.

Mrs Gavranich believes that the popularity of this book is driven by its relatability because it is just not the story of her mother’s migrant story, is it every migrant’s story.

“This story is representative of many stories especially migrants from the Mediterranean,” Mrs Gavranich said.

“Because of the migration the book really struck a chord with a lot of people and it’s a women’s story as well.

“It’s a strong, female, migrant and she was terribly courageous and went through a lot of adversity as a lot of migrants did.”

The book is currently on its second release with a third on the way as the first two releases sold out within weeks and she has run out of books.

The library in the village in Croatia where Debra’s mother was born approached her and asked to do a release of the book, something that Debra is very excited about.

Two private launches will be coming up in October with one set for Cairns while the other will be set in Mossman.

High statistics for high flying doctors The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has released the latest annual patient and aviation statistics as they flew tens of thousands of patients across the country during the 2020-21 financial year.

12,319 patients were flown to emergency or specialist care across Queensland last financial

year, 1,112 of these were flown

by RFDS Cairns.

Heart, sepsis and acute appendicitis were the most common reasons for transfers by RFDS Cairns during this period.

RFDS pilots flew a total of 24,279 hours over 8.3 million kilometres, landing 22,587 times.

Enthusiasts Revving up for car and bike show Chevy’s and Manaro’s of all sorts will be on display at the annual Tablelands Car and Bike Show at the Malanda Showgrounds on August 28, with this year's donations going towards the Malanda Men’s Shed.

Coordinator Margret Kelly, who has a passion for vintage cars and bikes with her husband Ned, said there will be many vintage cars on display, with registrations at the door.

“It is on the day registration from 7 am until 12pm with the winners to be announced at 1.30pm,” she said.

“Each winner receives a trophy sponsored by Shannon’s Insurance, with the main categories being Car and Bike of the show and the People’s Choice.

“I enjoy hosting this event and it’s a pleasure meeting and talking with other car enthusiasts and I’m overwhelmed by

VOLUNTEERS from across the region have come together with balls of yarn to create loveable blankets for Veterans in need as a part of Operation Blankie.

The group came together two and a half years ago to crochet blankets for those who are struggling with cancer, PTSD and other mental and physical conditions after serving in the armed forces.

Margaret from Operation Blankie said that the group came up with the idea in the Malanda RSL Sub branch when they saw a vetran go without a blanket.

“We found that a veteran with cancer didn’t receive a donated blanket and we decided to make one for him,” she said.

“We decided we wanted to do something for the veterans, as the majority of us are either veterans ourselves or have close family members as veterans.

“It makes us feel two words. Warm and fuzzy.”

Margaret said that this program is open to anyone with a “yarn stash” hidden away in the back closet or those who want to learn for a good cause.

PRE-LOVED laptops are helping local groups with conservation projects across the Tablelands and greater Wet Tropics region.

Terrain NRM has donated laptops to 11 community groups and they are now being used in plant nurseries, on research projects and to monitor threatened species.

Kuranda Envirocare’s Cathy Retter said the laptop would be a home for the group’s growing acoustic frog-call data, water quality and plant nursery records.

“Having this at the nursery means we can also use the online rainforest key to identify seedlings brought to us for possible propagation, we can bring manual record-keeping online

and store all our records from private computers in one place,’’ she said.

Johnstone Region Landcare Group’s Fay Falco-Mammone said the donation had doubled her organisation’s laptops.

“We only had one laptop and with several revegetation projects on the go it’s great to have another one so we can have project information on hand and improve our communications with partners, project managers and other group members,’’ she said.

Laptops have been donated to Kuranda Envirocare, Mulgrave Landcare and Catchment Group, Treeforce, Trees for Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands, the Tree Kangaroo and Mammal Group, the Cairns Bats and Tree Soci-

ety, Frog Safe, Johnstone Landcare Group, Mamu Aboriginal Corporation, Rainforest Rescue, Reef Restoration Foundation.

Terrain NRM’s CEO Stewart Christie said all Terrain NRM members were invited to lodge expressions of interest for a “lucky draw”.

“There are so many community environmental groups across the Wet Tropics who are working really hard to increase the resilience of our region’s landscapes, threatened species, reefs, waterways and farming land,” he said.

“It’s important to recognise the vital on-ground work these groups perform that we all benefit from, and this is one small way we can help support them.”

DOUGLAS Shire Council (DSC) has made the call to local builders to put in submissions to help them construct the shires first ever emergency accommodation service.

In September of last year $60 million dollars was announced to build new emergency accommodation services across the country to help women and children escaping domestic violence.

Douglas Shire received $760,400 of the pool to build a duplex comprising of two threebedroom self-contained units.

DSC Mayor Michael Kerr said that the shire has been looking to install crisis accommodation for several years.

“Our local community has been working towards securing crisis accommodation in Douglas Shire for the past six years,” he said.

“At present, people have no option but to take temporary accommodation outside the region, away from family and friends and other support networks.

“This only compounds the cycle of domestic violence.

“Thanks to the hard work by Council officers in collaboration with community service organisations and the Federal Government, we are now building this facility and would like to give local companies a chance to be a part of it.”

Now applications are open and local builders are being encouraged to apply by emailing procurement@douglas.qld.gov. au The tender will be awarded

by October 2021 with the facility hoping to be constructed by May 2022.

Funeral transparency under the spotlight A NEW paper being released by the Queensland Government hopes to give people ease of mind and clarity when looking at funeral prices.

The new funeral price transparency options paper will look at price transparency in the funeral industry, assessing issues such as providing up-front costs and giving the ability to compare funeral prices.

Attorney General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman said organising a funeral was challenging enough.

“Organising a funeral is an

extremely emotional process, sometimes with added time pressures if the death of a loved one was unexpected,” Minister Fentiman said.

“A person’s decision-making ability is often considerably impacted by their vulnerable state, time constraints and cultural expectations.

“The absence of easily accessible pricing information can make it difficult for consumers to make the best choice for their needs.”

Fair Trading Commissioner Victoria Thomson said upfront

price transparency would provide consumers with the pricing information they need to compare like-with-like.

“The ability for people to access and compare costs will make it easier for grieving families to consider their options,” Ms Thomson said.

“I urge people from all parts of the industry—from funeral providers to consumers and advocacy groups—to read the options paper and have their say on the way forward.”

The consultation will close on 7 October 2021.

Campers, as far as the eye could see were greeted with hot coffee and the sound of sizzling bacon and eggs early Sunday morning in the aftermath of the biggest Mt Carbine Bull and Bronc ride ever seen.

A record, well behaved crowd was just what the doctor ordered for the 20th annual event according to President Ian Pedersen.

“Its such a unique event,” he said.

“We missed it last year and everyone just made up for it this year. The Crowd, the volunteers, the competitors, the committee everyone played a part in what was a very well attended event and just what the community needed. “it will be hard to top this next year.”

HOMEsweet HOME Subcontractors and suppliers paid almost $4 million in outstanding debts ALMOST $4 million in outstanding debts was returned to subcontractors and suppliers last financial year, thanks to Queensland’s building industry watchdog.

Of the 759 monies owed complaint investigations completed during the 2020/21 financial year by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), debts owed to subcontractors and suppliers totalling $3,869,077.96 were paid.

QBCC Commissioner Brett Bassett said it was important

subcontractors were confident they would be paid for work they did.

“Our free monies-owed complaints service is available for the industry to use, and these amounts may not have been paid had the QBCC not been contacted,” he said.

“We have implemented a number of initiatives where we look at the licensees, industry compliance with security of payment and take appropriate action where necessary to ensure our trades are being paid.

“Failure to pay can lead to costly legal proceedings or potential licence suspensions and cancellations for QBCC licensees.”

Under law, it is a minimum financial requirement that QBCC contractor licensees must pay a debt owing to a subcontractor or supplier in relation to the performance of building work on or before it becomes due and payable.

Mr Bassett said it was important to always have a contract in place with a subcontractor or supplier and if monies weren’t paid, a payment schedule should be set up in accordance with the Building Industry Fairness (BIF) Act 2017.

Between October 2014 and June 2021 approximately $38.96 million has been recovered by the QBCC via the monies-owed complaints service since the minimum financial requirements policy began.

Mr Bassett said educating the industry on improved payment practices was a win-win for everyone.

QBCC does rely on industry information, therefore any subcontractor or supplier who is legitimately owed an undisputed debt is encouraged to lodge a monies owed complaint via qbcc.qld.gov.au,” he said.

Ongoing expansion at the "Fresh Leaf Farms" Wondecla site have opened up new job vacancies for more local staff like Michael, Mariana Agostino and Production Supervisor, Nikki Scammell.

BY SALLY TURLEY WITH A passion for farming, an infatuation with the Atherton Tablelands and a desire to achieve world domination in herb growing, Jan Vydra of Fresh Leaf farming has huge plans in the pipeline for his Wondecla hydroponic enterprise.

Mr Vydra had been selling his sustainably grown, Victorian farmed basil to Atherton Tableland businesses for several years and had already fallen in love with the area when those businesses closed down, creating a supply issue for the far north.

With his vision of giving customers "fresh leaves every day and everywhere," when the

locally owned Clear Water Hydroponics nursery at Wondecla shut down, it seemed the natural thing for him to bring it back to life.

After taking over the facility in April 2018, he started growing his own basil there with help from current manager and previous owner, Steve Till, investing $2.8 million in upgrades includ-

ing 4 new green houses.

Phase 1 of the project was completed on July 8 and a further $1 million will be spent during phase 2, commencing January next year, to develop the site's production capacity to 6 tonnes of basil per week, every week of the year. But Mr Vydra said not even 10 times current production would satisfy the growing market demand.

The Wondecla nursery is currently producing $2 million worth of product annually, but we expect that to increase to $3-3.5 million per year once the project is completed. We also intend building a new packing facility on-site there sometime next year.

From next March, we will also be working on a valueadding project with our basil in conjunction with the Tablelands Regional Council and the James Cook University. We hope to establish an Australian pesto product using high quality basil off cuts normally wasted in the harvesting process.

"Fresh Leaf" nationally is on track to turn over $20 million next financial year and we plan to establish bases in most Australian states during the next three years," Mr Vydra said.

Currently farming around 40,000 sqm of protected cropping, the 13 year old Melbournebased company employs a total of 148 staff across its three sites, 25 of whom work at Wondecla.

From 80 - 90% of those staff are Herberton locals, working in mainly permanent positions growing Asian vegetables, lettuce and a full range of herbs for local cafes and restaurants.

As one of the first facilities in Australia to incorporate Generation 3 technology into herb farming, Mr Vydra and Fresh Leaf co-founder William Pham have risen to become one of Australia's leading fresh garnishing companies, producing 25 varieties of herbs, micro greens and edible flowers.

Mr Vydra said 2008 was the perfect time to launch "Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs" as cooking shows like "Masterchef" and "My Kitchen Rules" had changed Australia's cooking culture and the herb industry was fragmented and unstructured, desperately needing consolidation.

"Consumer interest and the demand for fresh flavoursome products created an opportunity and we jumped on that wave, starting with a weekly consign-

ment of 2000 bunches of basil.

Through the combined use of Hydroponic, Flood and Drain and Vertical Farming, we are able to produce all year round," Mr Vydra said.

The former Nuffield scholar, who visited 20 countries around the world seeking knowledge about practices such as vertical cropping in a bid to "urbanise agriculture" is also passionate about lowering the average farming age by attracting more young people into agriculture.

Embracing emerging technology, "Fresh Leaf' farms have focused strongly on environmentally sustainable production. Improved technology has enabled them to multiply plant density per square metre by several hundred per cent and the use of in-house climate control has protected and extended the life of their plants, creating better produce every day for their customers.

Reductions to irrigation prices for QLD growers QUEENSLAND’S growers will be able to access a further 35 percent rebate on water charges as part of a state-wide irrigation price reduction plan.

This additional reduction is being put on top of the already current 15 percent discount provided to all irrigators for the next three years as part of the Queensland Governments economic plan.

Minister for Regional Development, Manufacturing

and Water Glenn Butcher said the rebate was part of the government's $81.6 million commitment to irrigation price reductions.

“Supporting high employment industries is vital for Queensland’s recovery from the global COVID pandemic,” he said.

“Irrigated agriculture including fruit, vegetable, nut and turf operations is one of Queensland’s most important

industries, both in terms of employment and value to our economy.

“This rebate will take the water cost reduction to a 50 percent discount for horticultural irrigators in recognition of the significant jobs supported by these crops.”

Growcom Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Barnard, commended the government for its significant investment in the sector and for making

the rebate easy to access.

“This rebate is the single most significant initiative this government has put into place to directly benefit the horticultural industry and the jobs it supports,” he said.

“Keeping the red tape to an absolute minimum will ensure more funds would flow to irrigators who can use the support to grow their businesses and invest in the regional communities that rely on them.”

Next climate crises to be cold, lots of cold THE reason the UN’s IPCC (CP, 11/08) has never made an accurate climate prediction is because its models have eight major flaws and there’s five climate forcings they fail to appreciate properly or even at all.

Their models have never predicted the future, run them backwards and they cannot recreate the past, they are oversensitive to CO2, they cannot properly account for clouds and aerosols, they do not account for the upwards heatfunnelling effect of thunderstorms and cyclones, they don’t properly allow for the urban heat island effect, they use inaccurate input data resulting from recording station instrumentation and site changes, and they do no account for the fact that when ice melts it absorbs a tremendous amount of latent heat from the environment – which cools the air.

The IPCC doesn’t properly appreciate the effects of volcanic activity, solar variability and incoming solar electromagnetic particles, incoming energetic galactic cosmic rays, the declining geomagnetic field, or the global electric circuit. That last one they won’t even acknowledge despite an upswing in dis-

coveries of different types of lightning as the geomagnetic field declines.

The IPCC was created specifically to “find the human fingerprint on climate” and its well-paid, tax-exempt officials will continue ignoring science in their efforts to find that fingerprint because their jobs depend on it.

However they cannot survive without other people’s money, so we just need to defund them and ignore them and the whole “climate crisis” evaporates.

The next real-life climate crisis will involve lots of cold and life hates cold.

We’d better knuckle down and build some hardened, underground nuclear electricity generators quick smart.

Well done Mareeba Hospital COVID team I AM considered a senior and as such I wanted to commend the COVID team at Mareeba Hospital.

On Thursday 5th August, 2021, I witnessed the group of professionals efficiently, with courtesy and respect. Many fellow seniors, who were in attendance to have their first and second Covid vaccine shots.

The Covid Team kept ‘patients’ informed and were well organised.

It was clear the staff were under pressure, yet they all carried their allotted roles well.

As a community we should be very grateful to have such experienced and well trained health care professionals to rely on especially in such extraordinary times.

With the Historical Society of Mareeba

IT is beautiful, awe-inspiring and totally huge. I’m talking about Mount Mulligan or Ngarrabullgan as the local Indigenous people have called it for ages. A truly giant of a presence as it sits broodingly over the landscape.

That is until the sun shines on it and then the reds, yellows, fawns, greens and blue come into play and the change is mind-blowing.

The Historical Society of Mareeba is putting on a month long plus photographic display of this fantastic mountain. This will also incorporate the 1921 disaster as well as the beginning and ending of the coal mining that took place.

The disaster is one of the worst mining disasters in Queensland mining history. Seventy-five men lost their lives early one morning causing devastation in the town and throughout the State and country.

The display will cover most of Mount Mulligan history as well as the disaster, the town was viable before and after the explosion, proving again and again, how resilient our people are. Hard work did not faze them and the coping skills were and still are, amazing.

During September 2021, our rooms in Centenary Park, 345 Byrnes Street, Mareeba, will be open to the public the following days and times.

Every Tuesday and Wednesday 8am till 3.30pm – our usual times and Mareeba Market Day 11th September, 7.30am till noon.

All other days including weekends 10am till 2pm.

Community tennis challenge Businesses, organisations, community groups and service providers from Mareeba gathered at the Mareeba Tennis facility last Saturday for a round robin tournament held by the Mareeba Tennis Club.

Dubbed the Tennis Community Challenge the tournament gave people the chance to get out and put their bodies through the motions, with everyone getting the chance to play each other.

With around five teams involved this year with support from Mareeba Tennis Club members the day was viewed as a great success with prizes for best dressed, most social and more.

Riders from across the region flocked to Mareeba Motorcyle Club on Sunday to take part in the fundraising event for Kevin and Lucy Dunn of Mareeba.

Race day success IN an outstanding show of support locals flocked to the Mareeba Motorcycle Club last Sunday as they hosted a special race day, raising money in support of longtime friends and supporters of the club, Kevin and Lucy Dunn.

Schools take to the pitch for annual Mark Bestmann Shield STUDENTS in Mareeba got to trade the classroom for the Borzi Park cricket field last Tuesday as the annual Mark Bestmann Shield was held between Mareeba State High School (MSHS) and St Stephen’s Catholic College (SSCC).

The annual competition is held between the schools in re-

membrance of Dr Mark Bestmann, an avid cricketer and in support of the Black Dog Institute.

Last week both schools fielded two well stacked teams with girls and boys all getting the chance to bat and bowl instead of studying.

In the end it was MSHS who

came out on top in both divisions with the boys winning 91 to 80 and the girls winning 134 to 124.

The Mareeba Cricket Club will be hosting its own game in support of the Black Dog Institute next month, September 18 at Borzi Park.

COVID restrictions put a holt to community sports WITH a snap lockdown hitting Cairns and Yarrabah last week, sporting venues were forced to hammer down on restrictions to keep our local teams safe from COVID. The Queensland Government said community, club and recreational sports in the affect-

ed region are not to go ahead for the next two weeks until restrictions ease.

These restrictions flow onto local sporting clubs on the Tablelands such as soccer and football among others.

Activities that are not permitted to operate include fun and

park runs, community competitions, organised team sports, lawn bowl meets, martial arts, gymnastics competitions and social dancing groups.

Activities that are permitted for the two weeks of sporting restrictions include activities with less than 10 people involved,

non-contact activities, activities that can be done with a mask, where there’s minimal sharing of equipment and Check In Qld and COVID Safe Checklist are obliged.

All interschool sports have also been cancelled or postponed in the Cairns and Yarra-

bah region as a safety measure for students across the region.

Outdoor recreational sports such as swimming, golf or tennis can go ahead so long as the exercise is outdoors and distanced from others.

SPORT Olympic medal for former Tablelands rider After decades of commitment to his sport, an Australian equestrian rider who started his career on the Tablelands has seen his Olympic dream come true bringing home a silver medal from Tokyo.

BY RHYS THOMAS KEVIN McNab started his career on the Tablelands at the age of two, dedicating his life to equestrian sports.

Over four decades on Kevin has had that commitment rewarded after he brought home silver at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Kevin, now 43, has realised his dream of representing Australia on the world stage, being part of the Australian Equestrian team in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Born in Cairns the Queenslander spent many of his young years on the Tablelands before moving to the southeast corner for an equestrian program.

While Queensland remains his home Kevin spends a lot of his time outside of London in the United Kingdom, pursing his equestrian dreams.

Kevin credits his mother’s ‘mistake’ of putting him on his

first horse when he was two that started his journey to the world stage.

“My mum made the mistake of putting me on a horse when I was two,” he said.

“I ended up going to pony club and it really snowballed from there.

“Riding horses is one of those things you either love or you don’t… I was never going to do anything else.”

He may be an Olympian now but 40 years ago Kevin was just a young man riding horses on the Tablelands for the Malanda, Millaa Millaa and Mareeba Pony Clubs at one stage or another.

“It all happens in such a rush, but it is something that we have been training towards and planning for years so when it happens It is, in a lot of ways, another day at the office,” he said.

New pool leeses announced KEELWATER PTY LTD have secured the leases for the Mareeba, Kuranda pools and the Dimbulah pool and caravan park for the next three years, beating out longtime lessees June and Syd Cotter from Cotters Aquatic.

Cotters Aquatic reapplied for the lease of the Dimbulah Pool and Caravan Park for one year only, while Keelwater had applied for all the facilities for a duration of three years, Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) chose

the latter.

“Cotter's Aquatics have been the lessee at the Mareeba and Kuranda pools since 2008 and took on the lease at the Dimbulah pool and caravan park in 2019,” MSC Mayor Toppin said.

“June and Syd are well respected within our communities and have delivered these important services well in that time.”

Keelwater has been identified as an established business with extensive experience in

operating pools and Mareeba businesses with Jason Salecich of Keelwater managing the Mareeba Leagues Club from 1998 to 2003.

“Council considered the tenders from Cotter's and Keelwater, both established and suitably qualified Operators,” Mayor Toppin said.

“The appointment of a single lessee for all four facilities is expected to result in improved efficiencies and a consistent approach to the management of

these community assets.

“Council assesses value for money, the administrative requirements of the proposals and the responsibilities that are proposed for both Council and the tenderer.”

The Express will sit down with upstanding community member and outgoing lessee June Cotter in the start of September to discuss the lease and her time as manager of the Mareeba, Dimbulah and Kuranda pools.

Mareeba Shire Council has awarded Keelwater Pty Ltd as the new lesees for the Mareeba, Kuranda pools and the Dimbulah pool and caravan park for the next three years.
