Gia rings the bell on chemo

BY RHYS THOMAS CHEERS of joy filled the grounds of the Cairns Hospital last Friday as young Gia Smith declared that she had finished her chemotherapy and beaten Leukaemia, by ringing Bayley's Bell.

Diagnosed at just two years old, the now fouryear-old Mareeba toddler has spent much of her life in and out of hospitals in Cairns and Brisbane fighting against Leukemia.

Gia rung the bell at Queensland Children’s Hospital early last month where she initially spent time for treatment before returning to Cairns.

Now back home, Gia got the chance to announce to everyone who has supported her and her family through this journey that she is cancer free, a fact that still feels surreal to her mother.

Gia’s mum, Regan Smith feels like both her and her husband Karl can breathe easy knowing that they got through it.

“It’s special we get to share the end of Gia’s chemo journey with everyone that’s close to us and have been a part of her life,” she said.

“Gia is excited she wants to do everything, she said ‘now my bloods better I can go to Disneyland, I can play football, I can do dancing’.

“Karl and I feel like we can actually breathe now, we can stop revving high, take it down a notch and relax.”

For Regan, the most surprising part of Gia’s story was the support given to her and the family, even by people she did not know.

“When something like this happens, I couldn’t be more grateful of where we live,” Regan said.

“We had so many people help or doing kind things just because, it was mind-blowing.”

Now in remission Gia will be having regular blood tests until she is 18 to identify if there is a resurfacing of cancer and to get back on top of it early.

“The doctors in Brisbane told us that if it does come back, it will be in her blood, so the blood tests will pick it up straight away,” Regan said.

Gia will now set her sights on doing the things she was unable to enjoy while undergoing treatment and start living like a four-year-old with a new lease on life.

4-year-old Gia Smith was all smiles on Friday when she rang Bayley’s Bell. Gia has endured a lot in the past two years and now in remission is ready to take on the world.

Tourism set to ramp up Ghis Gallo from The Crystal Caves in Atherton next to the world’s biggest Amethyst Geode.

BY PHIL BRANDEL LAST week Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ), in conjunction with the Queensland State Government made 15,000 vouchers worth $200 each available to Queensland residents to enjoy tourism experiences in Cairns, The Great

Barrier Reef and on the Tablelands.

The vouchers can be used to claim up to 50 per cent off any eligible tourism experience booked, up to a maximum of $200.

The campaign aims to encourage more Queenslanders to travel to Far North Queensland

and extend their stay and get out and experience the Far North.

The campaign runs from March 15 to June 25 this year and the $200 voucher will be available to use at participating tourism-based businesses who have registered their details with the government.

One local business on the list

is The Crystal Caves in Atherton with co-owner Ghis Gallo saying they registered because they want to be part of the industry.

“We are part of the North Queensland tourism industry and we like to be recognised as part of that,” Ghis said.

Compared to Cairns, Ghis believes Atherton and the Tablelands has seen an upturn in tourism numbers.

“We haven’t had a downturn at all, in fact our number are up.

More people are now travelling within Queensland,” she said.

“Unlike Cairns we have always targeted the domestic market and now we have also scored the travellers who used to go overseas and our now discovering their own state.

“We have scored all the locals who have not been able to leave the state, while Cairns has been going down in visitor numbers the Tablelands has seen

their numbers rising.”

Ghis said that The Crystal Caves was a unique tourist attraction for the Tablelands.

“We have one of the best crystal collections in Australia, people can touch they can get up close and personal and visitors can do it all in their own time, it’s very hands on and educational,” she said.

“If people have received a $200 voucher from the government, they can then use that to receive half price entry into our cave.”

Group Director of Sales and Marketing of Hartley's Crocodile Adventures, Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld in Kuranda, Angela Freeman said that the new measures were just in time.

“We are hoping that the new Cairns vouchers will help lengthen the stay of people in the region, we are also hoping

it will push people to do more exploration of Kuranda and the Tablelands,” she said.

“We hope that the vouchers give people extra money to spend and stay on the Tablelands.

“It’s a great campaign that has been rolled out really well and we as a business can take ownership of it and provide our own packages.

“It also reinforces that our businesses are COVID safe.”

Angela also said the discounted flights that the federal government recently announced was even better news.

“These flights will be a godsend,” she said.

“I think these flights will enable people to look at doing things like family reunions or Far North weddings.

“We will get back normal leisure tourism but also hopefully big picture tourism as well.”

New Mayors

NEARLY 12 months ago, Mareeba and Tablelands residents went to the polls for the 2020 Local Government Elections.

At the time both Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore and Tablelands Regional Mayor Joe Paronella decided not to recontest their positions.

This meant both councils would have first time mayors for the next four years.

The election took place on March 28 and we have decided to sit down with MSC Mayor Angela Toppin and TRC Mayor Rod Marti to speak about the last 12 months in office.

MSC Angela Toppin who is celebrating 12 months in the top job.

I’ve learnt that council is so integral to the community, that whatever is happening in the community, council is integral in that.

We are the eyes and ears of our community, so we are in a very pivotal position to flag concerns, to say this is working well or this isn’t working well.

How is being mayor different to being a councilor?

Mayor Toppin in a few words describe the past 12 months of your mayorship It’s been a whirlwind; we started our council during an unprecedented event. The new council had to work through a new normal.

We were called upon by the community to lead through a global pandemic, that’s now his-

tory and I believe that council handled the situation very well.

My aim is to continue to make this shire the best that it can possibly be.

We want to make sure that our agricultural industries, business and developments are all forging ahead to ensure a brighter future for our shire.

What have you learnt

As a councilor I was out in the community a lot, people saw me as somebody they could talk about their concerns. Now as mayor I’m also the political face because I now have to deal with state government and federal government.

I now must be constantly updated on what is happening in my own shire. If a minister says I’m driving through can I pop in, you’ve got to be ready for that. Whereas when I was a councilor that was a space that I did not need to operate in.

What is your vision for the Mareeba shire for the next three years?

I want the Mareeba Shire to grow, I want it to be a place that attracts business and industry and families to the area. To

make it a very livable and attractive shire. We have already started on that as part of our parks and gardens survey.

I would also like to break the back of the water infrastructure problem that we have. We must have water security, its something we are going to have to work at very carefully.

Water security for residents and for farmers is very important, our industries can’t expand with the current water supply.

That is going to be the big challenge for this council as it’s a 10-year project. We also want to continue attracting government funding for projects in our shire, so that we can do a multitude of projects that we couldn’t do if we had to rely on the ratepayers.

I’m also looking forward to a wonderful new library for Mareeba, and the Mareeba pound is another project that once completed I will be delighted with.

What is the plan moving forward to get more families to move to the Mareeba shire?

We have already started to unpack the recent parks and gardens survey; we have already started on it with improving the covered play area at Centenary Park.

Our rate base is very attrac-

tive compared to some other councils. There is sufficient land here for people to build homes.

Our doors are also open for industries that want to move into the area, we want to grow the industrial park and leasing at the airport.

In terms of Kuranda we need to see more visitors there for that community to move ahead, they are really struggling there. We hope that the state borders remain open because we need to get more travelers and holiday makers in Kuranda.

We have invested heavily in Kuranda, with the walking trails, improving the amenities and signage is soon to go up.

Who are your mentors?

I have a range of people, not excluding Ex-Mayor Tom Gilmore. Tom is a wise person and a wise politician and what he does not know about politics isn’t worth knowing.

He was such a professional at his job, for me that is attractive because I believe in honesty and transparency and accountability.

Finally, are you going to run again in three years’ time?

I’m hoping too, I’m very excited to keep going as there will be unfinished business here at the council and I want to finish it.”

one year on What has been the biggest challenge to the TRC over the past 12 months?

Our biggest challenge has been trying to realign the organisation, so that its more responsive and accountable. It all comes down to leadership, this council can do better, we have over 300 staff and they work really hard, but they need leadership. They need to know what the expectation of the council is and what the expectations of the community is.

The challenge is trying to get the organization aligned with the community.

You mentioned leadership, who are your mentors and leaders that you bounce off?

As a first-time mayor is the job what you expected it to be?

The job is as I imaged, I knew it was going to be hard work and it is. I believe I’ve gone into this job for the right reasons and I also believe we still have work to do but we are heading in the right direction.

What are the right reasons?

You’ve got to have some sort of belief in the community and belief that the region is fantastic and that you would like the community to be able to maximise the wealth and assets that

we have. You also got to have a belief that you have some skill and ability to help manage or navigate the path over the next four years. It's not good enough to say this is a fantastic place I should be mayor.

Instead, it should be about how can we maximize the opportunities that we have and what are my skills and competencies to bring this organisation to a point where it is more accountable and responsive.

We can’t solve every problem and do everything, but you’ve got to be responsive and empathetic to what it is that the community needs.

I have a group of people that I can go to, that I have become colligate with over the past 10 years. Most of them are on the Tablelands and if I have a bad day at council, I may give one of them a call and see if they want a coffee and say well this is where I started on Monday and this is where I ended on Friday.

I can call them and talk through stuff with them, you don’t always end where you planned to end up.

There are probably half a dozen people that I can ring, depending on the situation depends on who I go to.

If we could get a food processor on the Tablelands to value add to our economy that would be a brilliant addition.

We have also identified town revitalization, for Malanda, Ravenshoe and Atherton.

Our tourism is bubbling along but COVID was a massive hit. We do have brilliant assets here on the Tablelands and we need to start telling our story a bit better and talking about our uniqueness to get more visitors here.

The Fourth area which is probably the most important at the moment is we need to try and maximize our opportunities with health and medical services.

We have some things underway with the hospital and the local Aboriginal medical service. I think there are more opportunities for health on the Tablelands.

We have a few specialists who have expressed an interest in setting up shop on the Tablelands, so we need to maximize those opportunities.

There is an economy around the health industry that could be very significant to our economy and all those things add to quality of life.

Right now I am focused on today and tomorrow, if you get to far ahead of yourself in local government and you start thinking what will my platform be in 2023, then you’ve lost it. You’ve got to deal with what’s in front of you right now.

Finally, what is one thing you’ve learnt in the past 12 months.

Whatever you do with your life, you really need to listen to your body. I was lucky that I went to a GP and that I got a diagnosis with my heart valve. If I didn’t go to the GP when I noticed things weren’t right it could have been much worse.

Always be mindful of your health and wellbeing.

What’s on your wish list for the next two-three years?

We have identified four key areas, this includes agribusiness and agricultural diversification, that’s value adding to agriculture. We are dealing mainly with raw commodities on the Tablelands, but if you look at Mt Uncle or Gallo Dairy or Mungali Dairy, they are a few examples of where people have value added to their business and they have been very successful in the market. We need to look at value adding agriculture on a larger

TJ RYAN MEDAL RECIPIENT 2020 Year 12 student, Liam Newlands has been awarded the prestigious TJ Ryan Medal and Scholarship. The TJ Ryan Memorial Medal represents a long-standing tradition of recognising educational achievement in Queensland.

The award is a memorial to Thomas Joseph Ryan, former teacher, barrister and Queensland Premier (1915–1919), and is provided to students who demonstrate a strong commitment to high academic achievement and outstanding leadership in both their school and the local community.

Up to 10 TJ Ryan Memorial Medal and scholarships are awarded each year, to support exemplary Queensland students to pursue tertiary studies. Liam was awarded the Year 11 Dux Award and most recently, the Year 12 Dux Award and achieved the best class result in Biology, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, achieving an A in each of these subjects in 2020. Liam is now studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Science at University of Queensland.

Field Days set to be electric in 2021

THE hugely popular Rotary FNQ Field Days is ready to return bigger and better in 2021 as the countdown officially begins.

With only 10 weeks until the three-day biennial event is held at the Kerribee Park Rodeo Grounds, the organising committee and long list of exhibitors are making moves to ensure this year’s event is one for the record books.

A joint initiative between the Rotary Clubs of Atherton and Mareeba, Northern Australia’s

largest agricultural Field Day will be held on May 26, 27 and 28.

Event chairman Trevor Duncan said the committee had been working tirelessly to implement a COVID-Safe plan and extra safety measures for all attendees.

He said the event would still have the same electric atmosphere and encouraged people from all over the region to show their support.

“We will be the first major

event up this way for a while so I think we’re going to get some big numbers, but it will be great for the exhibitors if we do,” he said.

“The big message at the moment is that we’ve got to get as many people as possible to book online this year. Safety is our priority.”

Joining the Rotary FNQ Field Days as strategic partners for the first time is NQ Agricultural Services from Tolga, along

with long running partners Mareeba Mazda and Tyrepower Mareeba.

NQ Agricultural Services Managing Director James Fisher said he was looking forward to connecting with people from all over at this year’s event.

“We’re excited to be on board, helping the community and helping the Rotary FNQ Field Days is really what we want to be about,” he said.

“We’ve been to the event for the last couple of years and a highlight for me is actually dealing with the customers. It’s seeing people in a different environment... it’s really nice to see someone in neutral ground and show them our products and give them our thanks when they come on board.

“We’ve got a few new exhibits, which we’ll keep quiet for now, but we’ll be showing them at the Field Days.”

Mareeba Mazda Dealer Principal David Mete said he was proud to be joining the popular event again.

“This will be our fifth event as strategic partners. We’ve had such a great experience from all those events so of course we were coming on board again this year,” he said.

Tyrepower Mareeba Owner and Operator John Raso said he loved being part of an event that contributed so much to the Far

North community.

“I like to be part of what happens around Mareeba and supporting local, and Mareeba is going in leaps and bounds with all the crops around the place,” he said.

While many businesses have experienced delays with receiving stock since the outbreak of COVID, this year’s strategic partners assured the community they had plenty to go around and had been preparing for several months.

“Stock is a touchy subject, but we’re doing really well.

New water reservoir for Ravenshoe AT a specially convened Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting last Thursday, two tenders were awarded for work on the new water reservoir in Ravenshoe.

Councillor Annette Haydon said that the Ravenshoe Water Supply Scheme was one of the areas that TRC had been working on to improve the reliability, quality, and security of the water supply.

“It was important we didn’t rush in with another band-aid solution,” she said.

“We need to make sure the new infrastructure improves the water supply scheme now and well into the future.

“Our initial plan was to augment the Ravenshoe supply with a series of bores, but we were unable to find a suitable groundwater source in an acceptable location.

“We’re now looking at construction of a new reservoir and associated infrastructure.”

At Thursdays special meeting tenders were awarded to King Concreting Queensland Pty Ltd for earthworks, construction of the reservoir and associated infrastructure ($2,471,063 including GST), and to Rylsey Enterprises for the construction of pipes, booster pump and intake upgrades ($3,059,741.89 including GST).

“Work on these improvements will start within the next few weeks and should be complete by the end of the year,” Cr Hayden said.

“In the coming months we will also commence the design for a new water treatment plant and connection of Millstream, Cassowary Heights and Bellview Estate into the Ravenshoe scheme.

Land clearing claim escalates

A NEIGHBOURHOOD dispute has become a game of tit for tat after a Tinaroo resident allegedly cleared Council land to improve the properties outlook and water views.

It is believed that Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) received four separate complaints about the land clearing which has taken place on a public council reserve, which backs onto rural properties surrounding Lake Tinaroo.

On Tuesday, February 9, TRC responded to questions from The Express about the allegations responding with “We’ve received numerous complaints and the matter is currently under investigation.”

Its believed that several neighbours wrote complaints about the alleged land clearing

which involved the use of heavy machinery, including chainsaws, woodchippers and bobcats.

After the investigation, the TRC issued another statement on March 8 stating “We have investigated the tree clearing allegations and are providing revegetation advice to the landowner.”

The landowner, who wants to remain anonymous, issued a written statement; “In response to allegations made around the removal of vegetation on a Tinaroo property/waterfront reserve, the property owner claims that it had in advance sought guidance and advice from TRC in relation to the maintenance of the waterfront reserve in an effort to control the spread of noxious weeds and the removal of affected/damaged trees that allegedly

posed a safety risk,” they wrote.

“The property owner asserts that it has acted at all times in good faith on its understanding of the advice provided by TRC that its actions were permitted in relation to the maintenance of vegetation on the waterfront reserve.

“The property owner has been working with TRC and the local Rural Fire Brigade in a collaborative effort to maintain the waterfront reserve to manage noxious weeds and to further ensure that damaged or affected trees do not pose a safety risk to persons accessing the water front reserve area.”

TMR refuses to answer questions THE Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) are remaining vague over the future of the Barron River Bridge at Kuranda.

Locals have now noticed an increase in trucks and contractors who are now working on the bridge, rather than just inspecting the bridge.

Several local contractors including concreters, electricians and protective coating tradespeople have been spotted working on the bridge which contradicts earlier TMR reports, that the bridge was “being inspected.”

down to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads the Hon Mark Bailey at end the of February. To date this still has not happened.

Last week The Express asked specifically ‘What is the delay with the report? When will it be completed? And when will it be handed to the Minister?

A TMR spokesperson issued a statement saying; “Investigations and repairs are ongoing on the Barron River Bridge at Kuranda.

“We are finalising a report on the best way to manage the bridge, including on-going monitoring, remedial works and a timeframe for the single-lane

closure.

“We will provide an update as soon as possible.

“We understand the importance of this route for the people of Cairns and the Tablelands and thank local residents and motorists for their patience.”

When The Express mentioned that the above questions had not been answered we received “ Our response was provided below.”

In a statement from Barron River MP Craig Crawford “I’ve been advised TMR is still finalising the report on the Barron River Bridge, “ he wrote.

“I understand many locals will be frustrated with the delay

but I think is more important the report is not rushed and can capture all the necessary information on the condition of the Barron River Bridge.

“As I have stated in the past, I will ensure that when I am presented with information on the bridge I will share that information with the community to ensure they have all the facts.”

A spokesperson for Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said “The Minister has asked for an update from his department on the Barron River Bridge and will share that update with the community once he's received it.”

Single-use plastics banned

Alima Fraser and Angelina Della Bosca from the Mareeba Deli and Wellbeing Cafe are unhappy with the sudden decision to ban single use plastics.

TAKEAWAY shops will have to do without their single-use plastic containers after the Queensland Parliament made a historic decision to outlaw their use.

The Waste Reduction and Recycling (Plastic Items) Amendment Bill 2020 was passed unanimously early last Wednesday morning and will come into effect on September 1, 2021.

Plastic Free Cairns Coordinator Helen Reilly said that Queensland is now the second state to ban single-use plastics, following in South Australia’s environmentally conscious footsteps.

“Plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates and bowls and expanded polystyrene cups and containers will be banned,” she said.

“These are among the most littered items in Queensland with the most recent Clean Up Australia Report for QLD estimating that over 30% of all litter collected was plastic packaging.

“Queensland is the second state in Australia to introduce laws to ban single-use plastics, we congratulate the State Government on introducing this bill.”

Major fast food and retail chains have already started phasing out single-use plastics with major conglomerates like McDonalds using paper straws instead of plastic.

Other plastic items such as coffee cups/lids, other plastic takeaway items and heavyweight plastic bags are intended to be added to the bill.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin supports the bill and hopes it will have a positive effect on the beauty of the shire.

“I certainly welcome the move by the Queensland Government to ban single-use plastics, this is a step in the right direction in making our community more environmentally friendly,” she said.

“Inappropriately disposing

of plastics can lead to the potential for the waste to enter our land and waterways, causing knock-on effects.

“Banning single-use plastics will reduce the threat to wildlife and marine life and beautify our streetscapes, parks and open spaces.”

Businesses like Deli’s will also be struck hard by the new ban as they will need to source a large amount of new bio-degradable containers to house their fresh produce.

This shift is unwelcome news to Angelina Della Bosca who manages the Mareeba Deli and Wellbeing Café where single use plastics are a mainstay and have been for years.

“I don’t know what the alternative is for such a range of plastics like what we have to use,” she said.

“I’m sure the cost will increase to replace the single use plastics.

“We will replace our singleuse plastics if that’s the case.”

Bringing cultures together

Better Together Community Support team: Eileen Rothwell, Sergio Dinis, John Russell, Catherine Sharpe, Juanita Hunter and Rose Clark will be at the Multicultural forum this Friday.

Atherton not-for-profit and community services organisation Better Together Community Support with the support of the Tablelands Regional Council and Department of Social Services will host a multicultural forum to find out how Tablelanders would like to celebrate multiculturalism. The forum will be held on Friday March 19 at the Atherton SES Disaster Centre.

Tracey Dickinson Community Development Coordinator at Better Together said, “If you are a member of a cultural or community group or have ideas about how we can bring our community together to celebrate our cultural diversity, then you’re invited,” she said.

“The forum will feature guest speakers who have worked to successfully integrate diversity and festivals in their communities and will hopefully provide inspiration to how we can bring everyone on the Atherton Tablelands together to celebrate our multicultural society.

New retailers come to Atherton

TWO new stores set to replace the old Target Country store in Atherton have left some locals not happy with the choice.

Smokemart and GiftBox are set to open in one half of the building while Pets Domain is set to open in the other half.

The addition of the new tobacconist and the new pet shop will mean that there will soon be three tobacconists and three pet shops within Atherton. It’s something that a few locals are not happy about with some of them venting on social media.

One of the comments on the Tablelands Unite page was “Of all the great options the landlords could have put in the old Target Atherton store, options to support and interest our youth and elderly... they put Smokemart. Australia’s number one tobacco retailer. It defies belief.”

“Disgusting! There are too many tobacco outlets in Atherton already! Very poor judgement. I miss Target so much already.”

There was also some support for the new businesses posted on social media.

“Even though we are all disappointed in the choice of shop, I think this post should be deleted. This is a new business starting out and the negativity shown against them could really make or break them. They have a right to start a business just like any other shop in town.”

Smokemart and pets Domain are the two new stores opening in Atherton Square.

President at Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce Bree Hargraves said that small locally owned businesses provide to the community.

“Small businesses constantly offer a range of support from helping the local kids football team pay for their jerseys, providing prizes for fundraisers or assisting community event with

their promotions,” she said.

“While the Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce welcomes all business, and the confidence they are showing in our local economy to start up here, we do feel for the small businesses in the same industry as these new multinationals.

“They have suffered with all that 2020 was, and in most

cases have not been eligible for any of the government funding to 'unite and recover', this is just another blow for them.

“It would have been great to see those spaces filled with products and/or services that were not already readily available on the Tablelands - such as a trendy clothing store for our youth.”

RADF funding now open in TRC TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) is encouraging people to apply for the latest round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) funding.

Every year the Australian Government released funding for the RADF to support art projects in regional and rural areas of Australia, this can range from painting murals to directing a film.

TRC Councillor Peter Hodge is imploring relevant individuals, groups or organisations apply for funding to get up to $5000.

“It’s a very successful pro-

gram that has provided many opportunities to our community,” he said.

“We have four types of quick response grants that are perpetual, as long as applications are received at least six weeks beforehand.

“We’ve also introduced a resource grant so artists can but art materials and create catalogues and promotional products.”

To apply for the funding you will need to contact the TRC Regional Arts Officer before starting the application, the application must then be sent in by April

12 2021.

Cr Hodge is also looking for people to take a quick survey to help Council establish priorities for the art funding.

The results of the survey will help identify the needs, priorities, and direction for future funding ventures of the RADF. “The survey will gather information to aid in the development and assessment of the 2021-22 RADF program,” Cr Hodge said.

The Feast of the Three Saints It is with deep regret that the committee of the Feast of the Three Saints has made the difficult decision to cancel the feast again this year.

In lieu of holding the Feast of the Three Saints, which traditionally attracts up to 5,000 people, the committee will live stream a Solemn Mass on You Tube with a limited number of committee members in attendance and with COVID restrictions in place.

The Committee does not have the funds, manpower or infrastructure required to run the Feast within the guidelines set by Queensland Health.

On behalf of all members of the Three Saints Committee, President Alf Strano extends a sincere apology to all devotees who travel long distances, and from interstate.

It is hoped that the 2022 Feast of the Three Saints will be in safer circumstances.

Live music set to rock pool party

LIVE music fans will get a taste of country music with the Savannah in the Round concert taking place in Mareeba over the October long weekend (1-3). As a precursor to the Mareeba event, the promoters of the Savannah in the Round, Sound Australia have decided to put on a pool party in Cairns.

Calling it the Savannah in The Round – Pool Party, the two-day event will take place around the pool on April 23 and 24 at the Novotel Oasis Resort in Cairns.

On the Friday Night there will be poolside live music entertainment from 2pm to 10pm, featuring local, intrastate and interstate artists and headliners Thirsty Merc, playing around the pool.

On Saturday, April 24 once again there will be poolside live music entertainment from midday to 10pm, featuring local, intrastate and interstate artists including country music superstar Adam Brand who said he can’t wait to play around the pool.

“I love the idea that people will be floating past on lilos drinking cocktails,” he said.

“I may even have to join them in the pool for a cocktail myself.

“Last year I did a concert from the bow of a big boat in WA and people were on boats and jet skis and lilos and I loved it.”

Adam said he will be bringing his full band to play

around the pool.

“When they heard it was pool party in Cairns, they said we are in – I couldn’t stop them if I wanted to.”

Director of Sound Australia, James Dein said they were running the two events to help the Far North economy.

“We are hoping to attract out of region visitors to the Far North and to promote Savannah in the Round, the main event in Mareeba on October 1-3,” he said.

“Guests in rooms and 400 additional patrons who are not staying at Novatel will have the opportunity to join the party on each night on the Friday and Saturday.”

James said the event came about after the Novatel Management attended the Summer Series events in October last year and saw the opportunity to run a live music pool party at their hotel.

“Savannah in the Round already has a partnership with the Accor Hotel Group, and we had always planned another smaller Summer Series before the main event in October 2021 in Mareeba, it was a natural discussion.”

“This is the only other pre Savannah in the Round show before the main event on October 1 to 3 in Mareeba.

“It’s all about two days of live music and cocktails around the pool.”

Tropical Public Health Services (Cairns) First Nations COVID response team with their new mobile testing van that was dispatched last week.

A DEDICATED COVID testing van has been deployed across the Far North targeting the spread of the virus specifically among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander First Nations COVID outreach van was launched by Cairns based Tropical Public Health Services, it will support COVID testing and community engagement.

The van will be staffed by three nurses, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officer, Administration Officer all supported by a Senior Medical Officer, Public Health Nurse and Senior Public Health Official.

This team will have the ability to test symptomatic people and provide fast, up-to-date information about how individuals and communities can better protect themselves from COVID. Clinical lead for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander First Nations COVID response Dr Oscar Whitehead said that increasing testing accessibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will help detect any potential COVID cases early.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have done really well to keep COVID-safe over the past year,” he said.

“It is important that this continues, particularly to protect Elders and people with existing health conditions who are at risk of more severe COVID outcomes.”

Clinical Nurse, Tricia Dixon, said as a local Aboriginal woman, it was great to have engaged with local groups and share culturally safe information around COVID. “It will be great to hit the road with our new van, to bring more awareness to the continually changing environment of COVID,” she said.

The van has been covered with artwork by Cairns-based Aboriginal artist Jedess Hudson who also works for Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS).

The artwork was given the title Community Spirit (Wawu) as it depicts the strength we share in the COVID pandemic is the support we have for one another.

The van headed out to its first community on Thursday last week and will make its way around to a number of vulnerable communities.

RAVENSHOE couple Jean and Merv Shaw have been awarded the prestigious Hugh McKay Lifetime Achievement Award for their hard work and dedication to the Ravenshoe Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) The husband and wife team have been volunteers at RFDS for almost 36 years, rarely missing a single meeting and always being reliable when providing service to rural people in need.

They have never said no to any tasks whether it includes heavy lifting, setting up and running field days and the important task of making jam and crafts.

Jean says that receiving this award was a big surprise for her and Merv.

“RFDS is a group of such lovely people doing good things for people in need and we are very excited to have won this award,” she said “We believe that if someone needs help, we can be there to help in any way we can, “We will continue to help those who need the RFDS as it’s what we love to do.”

The award was named after Australian Industrialist Hugh Victor McKay who invented the first commercially viable combine harvester – ‘The Sunshine Harvester’.

When he was building the harvester, nobody believed it would work and this award honours the dedication it took to make it work.

“All of the work that they do including training they volunteer for is on top of their normal workload,” he said.

“PSO week is a week to thank them for all the work they do, in supporting their fellow members and workers.”

A Peer Support Officer pro-

vides support to their fellow workers, teammates and colleagues and they can offer support or guidance, or they can recommend other support in a confidential setting if someone is suffering either physically or mentally.

On the night three local PSOs were recognised for their long-standing work.

Long term firefighter Ashley Cupitt has clocked up 25 years as a volunteer PSO, as well as Kent Bewick and Rob Doyle who both clocked up 15 years as volunteer PSOs.

Mr Cuppit, who is the Captain of the Yungaburra Fire brigade, said it was good to be recognised for all the hard work.

“I do it to help other fire fighters in the crew,” he said.

“If they have issues or trauma, we volunteer to be a support person and help that person.

“When I first joined, we didn’t have PSO’s, if there was any trauma back then you just had to deal with it yourself.

“So, helping people overcome their trauma is a worthwhile thing to do.”

The ongoing issues with the Barron River Bridge leaves us with no alternative but to build the Bridle Track, otherwise known as the proposed Reddicliffe Highway. It will start on the eastern side of Davies Creek Bridge on the Kennedy Highway and has a gradual and smooth descent down to Cairns where a tunnel will see traffic pop out a kilometre and a half from the Cairns CBD onto Reservoir Road.

There are seventy thousand people that live on the other side of the Great Divide, and a new road will allow us to get mineral and agricultural products out as well as boosting tourism, but there needs to be significant work done.

BY ELLIE FINK A NEW mural will be unveiled by the Ravenshoe and District Chamber of Commerce representing a rich historical story of the township on Saturday, March 27.

This project comes under their success in receiving funding from the Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) in 2019.

Ravenshoe’s Chamber of Commerce Secretary Doreen Mortimore said this will hopefully be the first of many murals.

“We have chosen to recreate our rich history in mural, and this is the starting point,” she said.

“The mural itself is a black and white photo from 1926 and it faces the Club Hotel that was built in 1926 as well, “Ravenshoe has such a rich history, as it was farming land given to soldiers returning from World War I that developed into dairy farms and later sawmills.”

Ms Mortimore says that she hopes to see the CBD become vibrant with the towns history through more murals after applying for more funding.

Up and coming tradies were invited along to the Atherton Hospital redevelopment site last Wednesday to ‘Try a Trade’, giving them time off school and time on the job.

Aspiring tradies try a trade day STUDENTS were able to trade their pencils for a day on the job after they attended a ‘Try a Trade’ day at the Atherton Hospital last Wednesday.

The Try a Trade program was developed by Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), it aims to provide young aspiring tradies the skills through development workshops and providing them an insight into work in the construction industry.

SCQ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brett Schimming said the Try a Trade program aims to encourage high school students to try a career in the building and construction industry.

“There is a lot to think about when choosing a career path and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and pressured to make the right choice,” he said.

“Try a Trade gives students opportunities to consider a pathway into construction by trying various trades and possibly finding one that’s the right fit for them.

“Students were able to try their hand at the electrical, carpentry and plumbing trades before being given a tour of the Atherton Hospital’s current redevelopment.”

FKG Group’s Project Manager Kent Radnedge has worked in the construction industry for 16 years and began his career as an estimator whilst completing a Bachelor of Construction Management.

“It was great to spend the day with local year 10 students, they all showed a lot of interest and enthusiasm in learning about what is involved in a project of this size,” he said.

“The construction industry is a great place to build your career and there’s lots of different pathways you can take.

“Hopefully today’s event has given them an insight into a typical day within the industry, career possibilities and perhaps inspired them to consider becoming a plumber, electrician or carpenter.”

Liam receives TJ Ryan Medal MAREEBA State High School has had its fourth TJ Ryan Medal recipient in just six years after 2020 alumni Liam Newlands was awarded the medal and scholarship.

The LYOTY competition aims to select a young person to become the Lion’s Club Ambassador and travel overseas for Lions International.

Students Biku Adams Hume (Yungaburra Lions), Dailin Joshua (Mareeba Lions), Lauren Hyde (Yungaburra Lioness), Sahara Gobius (Malanda Lions), Rebecca Payne (Millaa Millaa Lions) and Micah Telford (Atherton Lions) went through a process to decide the winner.

Each student was required to participate in an interview with the judge’s Dr Ron Blake (Chairman), Peter Apel and Denise Lee Long earlier that

This interview allowed the judges to get a broader understanding of the contestant’s personality and their attitudes in a ‘work interview’ environment.

That night, two impromptu questions were asked, and contestants had to improvise a two-minute speech answering the questions.

The questions were “I love living on the Tablelands because?” and “At what point does the march of technology make you uncomfortable?”

Finally, the five-minute prepared speeches were delivered, with Dailin Joshua taking out the Public Speaking Award for his speech on 'The triumph of the human spirit.'

These were some of the inspiring messages shared by guest speakers at the Malanda Chamber of Commerce International Women's Day (IWD) event held at the Barron Valley Hotel last week.

other local businesses, and addressed the 2021 IWD theme of “Choose to Challenge” in the quest for ‘Achieving an Equal Future in a Covid-19 World’.

ing with the United Nations on one of the largest kids art projects in the world. She is currently the Creative Director and Co-founder of Learning Yogi and through working with 18 others around the world, is delivering a groundbreaking edu-gaming start up that is improving child literacy.

By bending the rules a little and using her strengths, Rubes, a self-described 'weirdo' who is easily bored and loves people, says her character “flaws” have been her point of difference and her greatest asset.

“There is little in life you can control, but if you use the strengths that are unique to you, you only need your hands, your heart and your head to make a difference,” she said.

Local triathlete, Megan Hendry, who has pulled on the green and gold to race for Australia multiple times now could never have dreamed a random decision to enter the Yungaburra Triathlon at the age of 25 would totally alter her life.

“I had a pair of joggers, a sports bra and a mountain bike and the race went past our house, so I couldn't really not have a go,” Miss Hendry said.

She has since raced at World Championship Events in the Sunshine Coast and Lausanne, Switzerland and has qualified for the 70.3 Ironman World Championship three times at the Gold Coast, in Nice, France and in Taupo, New Zealand.

“Everything now revolves around swim, bike, run. It is no longer a hobby for me, it is what I do."

With 15 hours of training a week on top of her day job, it means Ms Hendry misses a lot of events with friends, but said a great race makes it worthwhile, especially if she ends up on the podium.

She hopes to soon combine her work and her passion by starting her own personal training business.

To aspiring athletes Megan would say “taking that first step is the hardest part. Have a go at something new – it might not be your thing, or it might change everything.”

Kirsty Nancarrow knew from a young age that all she wanted to do was become an ABC journalist. She dedicated her school years to achieving exceptional results and bypassed university to take up a cadetship with the Blacktown Guardian. She had accumulated 300 hours work experience with the ABC, before finally landing a position with them in Alice Springs and later in their Cairns newsroom.

But, with their “If it bleeds, it leads” approach in the newsroom, Kirsty had to work in some of the nations most tragic and shocking crime and accident scenes, being forced to do live crosses for television, while every fibre of her being just wanted to help the victims and their families.

village, hoping that she could fill the emptiness and find joy through helping others.

With a return to more of the same work an untenable situation, she established her own business, Regional Media Training in 2017. She has a growing list of clients and with Suzie Cray, has recently set up 'eMotion Video Training and Production, helping Far North Queensland organisations share their stories with their customers and clients.

In her spare time she is writing an autobiography of the Cairns-based founder of Friends of Himalayan Children, Nepalese Australian, Som Tamang, as well as organising fund-raising treks to the Himalayas for libraries there and has never felt more happy, fulfilled or successful.

So even when your dreams haven't quite worked out how you had planned, with a change of focus, you may be able to achieve something even more important.

MC Katrina Mellick, took the opportunity to remind guests that even though we are living in the best time in history for women, there are still 87,000 women killed a year worldwide, mostly by their partners or family members, a 14% gender pay gap remained in the Australian workforce, and 35% of our women were experiencing sexual or domestic violence.

“We should celebrate how far we've come, but focus on how far we have to go,” she said.

Nikita said little suprises like receiving a card from a customer thanking them for growing tomatoes as they should taste, helped her through the bad days.

BY SALLY TURLEY AFTER six years of hard slog in the hot sun, developing their country from scratch, Rob and Nikita Grima and their five children, of Grima Family Farms in Dimbulah, now find themselves looking down the barrel of crippling staff shortages to harvest this year's crop.

The Grimas have hectares of tomatoes, sweet potatoes and zucchinis that will be ready to pick from this week and still no staff on site to help with the massive workload.

Their regular crew are still picking in Shepparton, where bin rates have been doubled by growers desperate to hang on to staff.

“They tell me each week they are coming next week/next week, but they don't seem to be any closer to actually getting here and we are ready to start picking. Nikita has advertised for more workers on Facebook, but has received hardly any response,” Mr Grima said.

“We have been getting a few people through a local contractor, but that has been pretty unreliable. Usually only about two

out five of the promised staff show up and their performance is fairly unpredictable. We are going to have real dramas if we can't sort something out soon.”

With their new leased area now developed and under tomato crop this year, the job will be even bigger than in 2020, when they harvested 70 - 80,000 punnets of cherry and grape tomatoes per week out of their paddocks to supply local and southern markets throughout the year. New plantings continue alongside the picking at a rate of 30,000 seedlings every 3 weeks, planted about 55cm apart in 300 metre rows.

“We need 20 people to pick and another 10-12 to pack for every 2.8 hectares of tomato crop and once the fruit colours, we only have two days to get it off,” Mr Grima said.

“We go through and pick tomatoes every three days from now on and because the cherry tomatoes are so small, we need people who know what they are doing or we end up with a lot of fruit lost from being squashed during harvest.

“Last year’s price was pretty average and because of Covid

affecting tourism, our Cairns market dropped from 6-7,000 punnets a week, down to 1,000.”

The farm ended up with more rain than Atherton this year, receiving over 1,000mm.

“We couldn't dig for three weeks and we lost over 8 hectares of our sweet potato crop.

The potatoes ripened, then just broke down in the soil from all the moisture. The humidity has increased the level of disease across the farm, meaning yield was generally down,” Mr Grima said.

“Our next lot of sweet potatoes will be ready to pick in a week and will need to be picked weekly after that. The zucchinis will be on line very soon after and will need picking every day or two until they finish.

“We have been trying to band together with other farmers, but there are not enough workers to go around and we have to spend time every day training new staff, that's if they turn up.”

A little closer to Dimbulah, Jeb Katch has been experiencing similar problems with his lime, lemon and mango crop.

Its going to be hard, most farmers, except maybe the corporates who can bring in their own staff, will have the same issues and it will ultimately result in food prices going up,” Mr Katch said.

“The money the government are offering people to relocate to these kinds of jobs has saved me a bit. This is the first time I have ever had an entirely Australian workforce, but this is hard, hot

work and a lot quit within a few days.

“We just have to make do with whoever we can get. Some farmers are even paying the cost of quarantine for backpackers, on top of already crazy wages, just so they can get workers.”

FNQ Growers chairman Joe Moro said growers from all commodities continued to report losses due to insufficient labour for harvest while backpackers continue to leave the country at a rate of more than 1300 per week.

“The loss of these foreign workers who take advantage of the wonderful lifestyle and abundant work in our farming communities is leaving a void that is making farmers increasingly anxious about their next crop plantings,” Mr Moro said.

Hopefully fit, motivated Australians looking for adventure and a good income might step up and fill some of the alarming shortages or farmers may find it necessary to reduce production in seasons to come.

BY SALLY TURLEY AFTER a decade of breeding stud Brangus bulls, 2020 was a year of firsts and successes for the Stazzeri family's Baronessa Farm outside Atherton. They won international acclaim for one of their Brangus sires and achieved very pleasing results at their first Rockhampton bull sale.

Shane Strazzeri decided to enter 22 month old Brangus bull Baronessa Mr Blockbuster,

into the Brangus Breeders' 7th Champion of the World Competition. Their bull was chosen as the Australian winner by the competition’s four official judges from Argentina, Paraguay, Australia and the United States in October 2020.

Blockbuster, whose bloodlines hail from the famed Brinks Brangus stud of Westall Ranches, New Mexico, went on to score a perfect 10/10 Genomic (tenderness) rating before taking out the Pan Pacific competition

and being named world champion on December 20, 2020.

He was sold after undergoing semen collection, as one of a draft of three bulls from Baronessa Farming in Rockhampton at the 44th annual National Brangus ABCA Sponsored sale.

He achieved Baronessa's top price of $20,000 and the stud averaged $15,500 across the three bulls offered.

If the Strazzeri family, who sell 20 Brangus bulls a year and around 100 bulls all up includ-

ing Charolais and Charbray bulls, had one message for the northern beef industry, it would be that bull buyers do not need to travel down south for good quality bulls.

“We are importing straws of the best AI (artificial insemination) bulls in the world to produce the polled genetics, ease of calving and short coated progeny that everyone has been looking for,” Mr Strazzeri said.

Heading this year's Rockhampton team of seven bulls,

is 23 month old Ultra Black embryo calf, Baronessa Mr Holloway.

Holloway's father is the US Schaff Angus Valley bull, SAV International who sold for $400,000. Schaff Angus Valley Stud created a new world record for Brangus bulls when they sold SAV American for $1,510,000 in 2019.

A second team of 9 Brangus bulls are being prepared for the North Queensland Field Day sale in Mareeba at the end of

May. Baronessa bulls have sold to vendors across the north, from Georgetown to Croydon to Charters Towers, Innisfail and Ingham over recent years.

Mr Strazzeri said the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day was a great showcase for local product and was looking forward to sharing the results of their new Simmental over Brangus and Senepol over Charoliais composites with beef producers in the future.

The worst 4 letter word Currently there is a fourletter word that seems to be permeating across the news, some say the word with trepidation, some people scream it and some just won’t say it all.

The word is so shocking that those who are affected by it, never fully recover.

The word is rape and thanks to a few brave women who worked Parliament house in Canberra the word is now on everybody lips.

The problem with the current narrative about rape is that it’s a very onesided conversation.

ADF chief General Angus Campbell recently said to first year cadets joining the ADF, “They should avoid alcohol and going out alone while being attractive, so as not to become a target for sexual predators.”

He highlighted the “four As” to watch out for: alcohol, out after midnight, alone and attractive.

Campbell’s comments placed the onus of responsibility to prevent sexual assault onto women instead of potential perpetrators.

Australian of the Year and victim advocate Grace Tame called the comments “really unhelpful”.

“That feeds the idea that this is something that a victim has to foresee and stop themselves, as if they’re to blame,” Tame said.

In a statement, Campbell said his “intent was to raise awareness and challenge the group to do what they can to mitigate risk”.

So according to the General, it’s women who need to mitigate the risk.

So ladies, please don’t leave the house, always make sure you’re being chaperoned by a male family member and try not

Ex KAP senate candidate and ex family first member Bernard Gaynor doubled down and recently tweeted. “If you don’t want to get raped, don’t get drunk and fall asleep with some bloke in your office.”

Even the Prime Minister needing to seek advice from his wife Jenny on how to address the situation regarding the Brittany Higgins rape case.

So far, all the advice has come from white middle-aged men.

That was until Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds had to apologise to Brittany Higgins after reports surfaced of Ms Reynolds calling Ms Higgins a ‘lying cow’.

All these comments and conversations seem to be very one directional. Even Christian Porter played the victim card.

Why is it that nobody has said “just don’t rape”?

We are concentrating on the victims and not the perpetrators.

We have a major societal problem if rape is occurring everywhere from small regional towns to the halls of Parliament House.

Change usually takes a generation, look at seatbelts, drink driving and passive smoking.

At the moment we are saying if you don’t want to be hit by a drunk driver, then don’t leave the house in your car. Whereas the education for years has been “don’t drink and drive” We need to put men under the spotlight and keep reminding them that sexual harassment and rape is not on and we need to remove the victims from the spotlight. If we don’t reverse this paradigm then change will never come.

Special breakfast for special women I would like to congratulate St Stephen’s Catholic College on a wonderful International Women’s Day breakfast.

It was well attended for the 6:45am start and the six guest speakers answered questions about improving our future generations to never give up and always believe in yourself.

What a great start for the day and well-done St Stephen’s, the hall was decorated beautifully, and the breakfast was delicious.

Well done to the principal and staff for making the day very special and seeing our future students represent their school on such an important day, thanks again.

Mareeba pedestrian crossings I strongly agree with Greg Williams with regard to the hazards of Mareeba’s main street (The Express Letters

to the Editor 10/3/21).

It seems strange to me that we have to stop both ways, four stops in all, at the railway crossings either, in Rankin Street or Keeble Street, when dropping someone to school and picking them up.

These stops are compulsory even though the train runs only once a week, this is in contrast to nothing halting traffic to allow pedestrians to step out onto the major pedestrian crossing at the Post Office in Byrnes Street and having the certainty of reaching the other side.

I would be interested to know what Deputy Mayor of Mareeba Shire Council, Kevin Davies, is proposing in taking the issue forward as regards to the article Council calls for crossing change (The Express 3/3/21) near the Mareeba Post Office.

Is this the only issue? I think it is much bigger than that. It seems there should be a clear plan of action by Council and increased lobbying to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads.

towns as they rapidly increase in population and the main streets become crowded with both pedestrians and traffic.

Where is the town planning for the increased population that we have now and into the future that will make the business area of town safe for both drivers and pedestrians?

Why does it take a major incident or accident for anything to be done by Main Roads and Council?

I know there have been petitions in the past and as the population of Mareeba increases so do the risks of more accidents happening.

Thirty years ago there was talk of rerouting the heavy vehicles out of town and nothing was done, now it is three times as busy and the situation is a great deal worse.

In the main street of Mareeba people are crossing the road in all areas, large trucks going through town (that are not stopping in town and so are no benefit to the main street businesses) as well as people backing out into oncoming traffic and try-

ing to inch out and see past and around larger cars. Byrnes Street is a major hazard.

There should also be another crossing up near the ANZ / Westpac Banks. I feel all of Mareeba’s crossings should be examined for safety reasons; the crossings in Walsh Street, around the corner from Hort Street, the crossing near Coles and the one in Herberton Street, all have their own issues. I can’t fathom why cars can’t enter KHub car park before the crossing and come out after the crossing, surely this is safer for pedestrians.

What is the reasoning behind doing it the other way round?

As far as I am aware all crossings in Mareeba, unmarked or not are a risk to pedestrians once they step off the sidewalk. Main Roads and Council it is time now to get together and fix this situation to make the centre of town as safe as possible for both vehicles and people before more lives are ruined or lost.

SPORT Mt Carbine Rodeo – more than a bull ride

MT Carbine Rodeo Association Inc was named 2021 Community Organisation of the Year at the Mareeba Shire Council Australia Day Awards, for much more than just exciting bull rides.

The association has made a strong reputation in the Tablelands community, with their generous donations to many charities for 20 years.

Their work includes hosting their Bronc Ride, the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea and the Far North Queensland (FNQ) Cardiac Challenge.

Through sponsors they have raised more than $13000 and donated to groups such as Men’s Shed, RSL Sub-branches, rural fire brigades, P&C Foundations and the Cancer Council as well as purchasing a community defibrillator.

President of the Mt Carbine Rodeo Association Inc Ian Pedersen says he feels honoured to have received this award.

“We nominated ourselves on the Mareeba Shire Council website and feel honoured to have had so many other nominations from other people,” he said.

“This award is in recognition of the hundreds of volunteers we have had over the past 20 years that have contributed to the success of our association.

“We are also grateful for our numerous sponsors who have supported our bull ride and infrastructure upgrades.”

Mr Pedersen says that depending on COVID ruling they will hope to have their annual bull ride on August 14, as well as their Biggest Morning Tea in May.

Cricket camp for female cricketers

The Mt Carbine Rodeo Association with their award they received on Australia Day.

Young girls in cricket are being asked to put their hands up to participate in a weekend long cricket development camp in Tully.

The camp aims to provide cricket training and development opportunities for aspiring female cricketers in Far North Queensland.

Being held during the June/July school holidays the camp will run from June 26 to 28 with two separate age groups being targeted.

The Girls Development Weekend will run from 26 to 27 of June targeting girls aged between 10 and 15 while the Women’s Cricket Camp from 26 to 28 of June targets girls 16 and up.

First time state side

AFTER starting his cricketing career seven years ago, Atherton cricketer Tait Coghlan has taken a step further after being selected in a North Queensland representative side.

The young all-rounder currently plays for Atherton Cricket Club in junior and senior teams.

Come April he will be flying down to the Sunshine Coast to compete in the Queensland

Cricket U16 Male State Championship as a part of the under 16 Northern Country (Flash) side.

Tait has been selected in representative sides before, but this is his first selection in a North Queensland side, a goal he has had since starting cricket.

“Getting into a North Queensland side is something that I’ve strived for since I

started playing cricket,” he said.

“It feels really good, I feel really humble about being picked in this side.

“I can’t wait to represent my region, I’ve worked really hard to get here.”

Tait is excited to compete in the championships and potentially grow as a cricketer playing in high pressure and high skilled games.

Bulls cut out cutters THE Mareeba Bulls Premier Ladies had a scintillating performance in their second match of the Kappa Women’s Super Cup winning 7-1 against the Innisfail Cutters.

A quick goal in the opening minutes of the match set the pace for the Bulls as they continued to work hard and pressure Innisfail.

Innisfail followed by scoring off a penalty tying up the score at 1-1, this would end up being Innisfail’s one and only goal in the Bulls net.

The Bulls answered back scoring four goals before halftime with some impressive teamplay and passing to open clear lanes for their strikers.

Lindsie launches into Australian championship A RISING star in the waterskiing world has skimmed her way into the Australian Barefoot Championships this week with aims to land on the podium.

Lindsie Jack, a 14-year-old Tablelands local has set her eyes on silver at the ongoing barefoot championships being held in countryside New South Wales.

After only putting her feet on the water in 2018 Lindsie has made incredible progress to make it to the Australian Championships for the second time.

Initially she made the journey to the Australian Championships in 2020 before heading to the World Championships last December.

Although Lindsie is just 14 she will be competing in the U17 girls age group, just like the

Lindsie started skiing on Tuesday and will continue to ski every day save for one rest day until the end of the championships on Saturday.

The Crushers looked sharp in the opening exchanges to set up an early 22-0 lead while the Roosters struggled to hold the ball and bombed several scoring opportunities.
